District 191 buying fresh, locally grown produce Procurement in connection with Smart Choices program BY MICHAEL RICCI • SUN NEWSPAPERS Burnsville-Eagan-Savage Independent School District 191 officials have begun an effort to foster higher academic achievement, but the effort is not a classroom venture. In connection with the school district’s Smart Choices program, an effort was coordinated this past summer to purchase fresh produce from Akerberg Acres, a small, family-run vegetable farm located in Belle Plaine. Smart Choices is a healthy eating initiative that was begun in February 2009 and is designed to support the health of students and faculty members alike in elementary schools by creating an environment that promotes healthier food choices. According to Annalisa Hultberg, Smart Choices student wellness coordinator for the Burnsville-EaganSavage school district, the procurement of fresh vegetables began with the district’s summer school program on a smaller scale, but it will continue through the fall. “When it’s available during the summer and fall, we swap in this produce,” Hultberg said. “They do have other items that are more frost- resistant.” The district is purchasing potatoes, sweet corn, apples, watermelon, cucumbers, squash, green beans, cantaloupe and cherry tomatoes. The district has been purchasing its produce from a distributer for the past five years, and the purchases from Akerberg are to complement its year-round purchases, according to Hultberg. Akerberg Acres is owned and operated by Lars and Darcy Akerberg, along with their two sons. The family has been growing vegetables on its four-acre farm for the past nine years. The Lakeville and Farmington area school districts have put together a series of four free parenting workshops this year. The first workshop will be 7-8:30 p.m. Monday, Oct 3rd, Kenwood Middle School, 19455 Kenwood Trail, Lakeville. Erin Walsh, daughter of Dr. David Walsh, will discuss how to teach children respect and self-discipline in the 21st century. Erin worked for six years with the National Institute on Media and the Family and was a principle architect of the MediaWise movement. MediaWise is a national campaign to provide professionals, families and youth with information about the impact of digital technologies on children and young people. She has special expertise in social media, body image, video game violence, and adolescent brain development. Parents are invited to attend this free event and spend an evening with other parents. There is no pre-registration and continuing education units will be available for each session for a small fee. Childcare will not be available. Info: ce.isd194.k12.mn.us
The Burnsville City Council has approved an archery deer hunt in one city park this fall as part of the ongoing deer management program. The park selected for this fall’s bow hunt is Kelleher Park in southwest Burnsville. Metro Bowhunters Resource Base, a nonprofit bow-hunting group formed to assist metro communities with deer population management and provide deer hunting opportunities to its members, will conduct all park hunts. All participants for the fall hunts have been selected at this time. All hunters will have taken bow hunter training and passed a proficiency test. The dates selected for this year’s archery hunts at Kelleher Park will be 5 a.m. to 6 p.m. Thursday-Saturday, Oct. 13-15, Oct. 20-22, Oct. 27-29, Nov. 35, and Nov. 10-12. Residents should note that the park will be closed to the general public one hour prior to the hunt until one hour after the hunt concludes. Info: 952-895-4574.

PUBLIC SAFETY Burnsville police combat domestic violence with DART Burnsville Police Sgt. Matt Smith notes that it is easy for an officer to ask a domestic violence victim, “Why are you with this person?” What’s not as easy, he says, is convincing that person that domestic violence isn’t “a normal way of life.” Smith is the lead officer of Burnsville’s Domestic Abuse Response Team. While October marks National Domestic Violence Awareness Month, for the Burnsville Police Department the topic is one of emphasis and concern year-round. DART was started in 1993 by three Burnsville Police Officers and has grown into a unique arm of the police department in which specifically-trained officers are assigned domestic violence-related cases that they follow through the entire legal, criminal or recovery process. During a typical domestic abuse call, an on-duty DART officer is dispatched, and will first assess whether the situation warrants an arrest. The officer then turns his or her full attention to the victim, and provides that person with an attentive ear and resources to help the victim take the “next steps” in resolving their abusive situation. As part of the procedure, the on-scene DART officer makes a direct call to the 360 Communities Lewis House women’s shelter in Eagan while still on the scene. “If [the victims] don’t want to talk to us, we will point them in the right direction. We just want to let them know that if they need help, all they have to do is ask,” Smith said, adding that while a victim may not necessarily want to speak to police, they may be more open to talking to a third party like a Lewis House representative. What makes DART unique is that the assistance doesn’t stop after the police department’s initial response. Officers follow up with the victim a week later to check on their emotional and physical well-being, answer any questions that may have come up and explain any legal proceedings that may follow. Officers also use the opportunity to once again encourage the victim to leave their abusive relationship and seek additional assistance. Today, Burnsville DART consists of 11 police officers and a number of local prosecutors, social services representatives and dispatchers – all trained in working with domestic violence cases and victims. Smith, however, said that one of the most crucial factors in curbing domestic violence is reporting it. “If you are a neighbor and you see this
stuff, call us,” Smith said. “You may tell yourself, ‘It’s not my business,’ but if someone is getting hurt, it is your business.” For more information on domestic violence outreach, contact the Lewis House in Eagan at 651-452-7288 or visit 360communites.org and search “Lewis House.”
Lakeville dumb criminal arrested for drug possession Lakeville Police Officer Greg Jensen was on patrol late one night when he pulled into a gas station, parked his marked squad care and went into the store to purchase a can of soda. A short while later, when Jensen was inside the store, a citizen approached him and advised him that there was a possible drug deal going down in the parking lot involving a person next to a parked vehicle. Jensen walked over to the parked vehicle and found that the person who was reported as being next to the vehicle had left, but what Jensen did observe in plain view were the two surprised occupants of the vehicle caught in the act of rolling their first “joint” out of their recently purchased baggie of marijuana. Jensen arrested the two subjects and cited them for possession of marijuana in a motor vehicle.
Lakeville Fire Department responds to house fire The Lakeville Fire Department was dispatched to a possible fire in an aircraft hanger at Airlake Airport just before 4 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 22. Crews arrived on the scene to find smoke and fire coming from a wall inside the hanger. The initial response was from all three stations, including three engines, one ladder, one rescue truck, and an Allina ambulance. A second alarm was requested for Lakeville Station 3 for more manpower. Crews made entry into the hanger from the service door to find the fire. The two occupants of the hanger had evacuated and provide directions to the fire crews of where they had seen the fire. The fire was extinguished but the hanger suffered damage to the interior and exterior walls. Crews remained on scene until 4:30 p.m. and the fire marshal was on the scene until 6:30 a.m. deter-
mining the cause of the fire, which remains under investigation. There were no reported injuries.
Lakeville fire report for Sept. 11-18 The Lakeville Fire Department responded to 24 service calls from Sept. 11 to Sept. 18. The calls included two structure fires, one grass fire, one dumpster fire, one outside equipment fire, two
motor vehicle accidents with injuries, four medical calls, two gas leaks, one service call, two smoke scares, one controlled burn, three false alarms, and four good intents. Fire Prevention Tip A clean oven is a safe oven, so officials with the Lakeville Fire Department are encouraging residents to maintain their ovens by wiping clean any food spilled during cooking and to follow the manufacturer’s directions for cleaning. These simple measures can prevent fires.

Lakeville artist wins 2012 duck stamp competition Selection makes sixth victory for Hamrick BY MICHAEL RICCI • SUN NEWSPAPERS It may be a competition, but one Lakeville artist seems more concerned with the habitat than notoriety. Officials with the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources announced recently that Lakeville resident Stephen Hamrick won the 2012 duck stamp competition, marking the sixth overall win for the artisan. His depiction of the ruddy duck was selected as the winning design from 26 entries. Hamrick has been painting on a fulltime basis for the past 30 years. Hamrick has won the trout stamp contest three times and the pheasant and turkey stamp contest one time apiece. Hamrick holds a fondness for the outdoors and habitat that started years ago with his family. “Growing up hunting and fishing and being outdoors, that really set the basis,” he said. “There was already that connection with wildlife.” Despite this, the Ruddy Duck
(Oxyura jamaicensis) is oddly one species he said that would not have been his first choice. “The state chooses which you get to enter,” he said. “There is a running list that goes out for 20 years. I would probably paint a mallard or a wood duck.” According to Ray Norrgard, DNR wetland wildlife program leader, the department annually sponsors stamp contests in the fishery and wildlife categories. The fishery category includes the walleye stamp and the trout and salmon stamp, while the wildlife category includes stamp contests for migratory waterfowl, pheasant, and turkey – with the exact species rotating every year in each category. “I can tell you through 2023 what the eligible species are,” Norrgard said. Hamrick explained, in part, why the Ruddy Duck would not have been his first choice and what difficulties were involved. “It is a duck I’ve never seen up close. I’ve only seen them at a distance,” he said. “That makes it difficult because you have to make it up. I don’t have a photo reference.” Due to this minor obstacle, Hamrick

said he had to perform a little research. “I checked out where the ruddy duck nests and where it winters,” he said. “Then you can tell where it has to fly to get to those places. Then I looked for something unique to put in the piece.” Hamrick was spending time with his daughter at a church camp when he noticed horsetail brush in a nearby lake, which he thought was unique and included it in his winning painting. Also adding some difficulty is the

fact that each contestant is limited in size when creating his or her piece. Hamrick, who painted a 6.5x9-inch piece, said these restrictions exist because the winning piece is eventually reduced to stamp size. Norrgard said Hamrick was quite excited about his win and that his name is quite familiar with contest judges. “Stephen is almost always one of the finalists,” Norrgard said. “It’s never a surprise to see his name in the final judging. He is joining the ranks of some of the most famous wildlife artists in Minnesota.” For Hamrick, his excitement extends beyond winning the contest to a concern for wildlife habitat in Minnesota, for which funds generated by the contests are used. “I think habitat is really crucial for the future,” he said. “We are losing wetlands at an alarming rate. We need wetlands for flood mitigation and to keep water clean.” Stamp sales generate between $500,000 and $900,000 per year for habitat enhancement projects in the state wildlife management areas and shallow lakes.

BV family intimately knows the meaning of military service Three children previously, currently serving in armed forces BY MICHAEL RICCI • SUN NEWSPAPERS With one son recently having completed his military service and two more children currently serving, one Burnsville family knows the feelings of worry combined with pride. Burnsville residents Debbie and Randy Day never served in the U.S. military, so when not one, not two, but three of their children announced they wished to be part of America’s armed forces, they were caught by surprise. The notion of all three entering the military caused the Debbie and Randy mixed emotions.
“I was shocked but proud, Debbie said. “As each one of them came to me, I wanted to make sure they were doing it for the right reasons. Tim Puch, 23, the oldest of their three children, enlisted at 17, and 10 days after graduating from Burnsville High School in 2006 left for basic training with the U.S. Marine Corps. “Tim I know felt he wanted to be challenged a little more than college would have challenged him, Debbie said. “He chose to enlist in the Marine Corps because he felt is was the best [branch]. Tim has spent the past eight months of his military service in Afghanistan. “He was in for four-and-a-half years. He was awarded the Navy achievement medal with valor. For as long as it MILITARY FAMILY: TO PAGE 11

Someone should benefit from my time in college The last week in September is Homecoming Week up at my alma mater, the University of Minnesota, Morris, and I’ve been invited to attend a number of alumni events as a representative of the newspaper industry and to enlighten students on the pros and cons of working in journalism. I think. To be frank, I’m not quite sure why they picked me — I highly doubt the criteria for selection included “dashing, handsome and has access to frequent columns in a newspaper.” For whatever reason, the alumni office asked me to take a drive up to Morris for a few days to join in the festivities, and I plan to be there. (Or, I am there. The conjugation of that verb and formation of the sentence around it entirely rests on when you, dear reader, are actually reading this column.) My time in college gave me many things: A healthy appreciation for seemingly endless insomnia, for example. Also, a solid understanding of how to buy exactly enough food to prevent

starvation, but still have money for rent, electricity, perpetually popping bicycle tires and the numerous copies I was somehow always making in this increasingly paper-free world. So, in the spirit of education and giving advice that somehow, at some point, might be useful to those who tread the path I too recently walked myself, I dug down deep and came up with some thoughts for those just starting off on whatever journey it is they are on. Then I sat down and wrote that column, touching on the finer points of how to succeed in college. It was a fine piece of writing, if I do say so myself, and I was initially pleased with it. Then I tore up the page and deleted the file. You see, the reason I made it
from orientation to graduation has less to do with anything I learned while I was there, and far more to do with a simple mantra that was given to me shortly before I left for school. This most important piece is one I cannot claim as my own, because it was given to me by someone close to me. I won’t divulge his name here for risk of, well, nothing in particular. I’m just not sure he’s interested in seeing his name in print — again. For those communications and journalism students reading this, yes, I am using an anonymous source and, no, I haven’t fact-checked his information. Deviations aside, he said, quite plainly, “Don’t forget why you’re here.” Why you’re here: That’s the kicker. It’s advice that can apply to anyone regardless of whether they’re in school or not. There are so many distractions that can crop up; interpersonal drama, bills, clubs, parties and everything else can get in the way.
Remembering why you’re spending the time, money and effort to fill every day to do what you do every day should be paramount. Don’t let the minutia occupy your mind, learn to avoid the pitfalls and aim yourself toward what it is you want. Gather the knowledge. Staying on the path you’ve chosen isn’t always easy, but one day you, too, may be able to offer somewhat trite platitudes to those who come after you. Just to add a little disclaimer — something I find myself doing on a regular basis in my columns — a four-year degree isn’t for everyone. I have many friends who have happy, healthy, successful lives and careers without going to or graduating from college. The right path for some is the wrong road for others. Phantom election candidates waste everyone’s time Each year when election season rolls around, a deep sigh echoes through our newsroom. To be honest, many deep sighs. It can be a frustrating experience. For the most part, the candidates are good to deal with. They respond to our requests for information, make themselves available for interviews and generally take their election bid serious. But there are always a handful who don’t. I call them the phantom candidates. Yes, they file to run, but that’s the last you hear from them. In doing our due diligence, we take above-and-beyond steps to try to track these people down to make sure they are included in our election coverage. We start out with an email generally, then a phone call and then a letter posted to their home address. From there we go to ask-
PAUL WAHL Sun Newspapers Senior Managing Editor ing other candidates if they’ve seen or heard anything of the invisible candidate. On occasion we’ve gone back and sent registered letters (which came back undeliverable) and in one case I remember a couple years back, I sent a community editor to the doorstep of a so-called candidate. He wasn’t home. He also wasn’t home two days later when the community editor paid a return visit. Over the years I’ve grown a bit less diligent about tracking down these folks. Who would file to run for office and then not participate in the campaign? What is the
purpose, other than to cost the governing entity money? I suppose it’s a way of “making a statement,” but what would that statement be. “I’m so hard up for attention I file to run for office and then don’t participate in the election.” That is the statement being made, as far as I’m concerned. Already in this year’s election we’ve come across several phantom candidates. Generally the first tip-off is when they have no online presence. All serious candidates today down to the most microscopic of entities have a website, even if it’s nothing more than a glorified campaign pamphlet. The clincher is when they don’t answer their telephone for days on end. When certified mail is returned, you know you’ve reached the end.
I suppose everyone has the right to choose how they will campaign – or in this case refuse to campaign. Maybe it’s time we put some sort of penalty into the election laws. If you want to be a phantom candidate and there is sufficient evidence to convict you, the individual in question should be sentenced to scrub floors in the office of the Secretary of State the day after election night. The threat of manual labor ought to scare these folks. Of course, law enforcement would have the same problem finding them that we have, but they have the power of subpoena. A bench warrant really gets your attention. It did mine. Ask me to tell you about that sometime. Meanwhile, don’t vote for phantom candidates. It only makes matters worse.

Military family FROM PAGE 5 seemed, I was flying down to North Carolina to see him come home,” Debbie said of Tim at the completion of his service. She added that finally seeing Tim arrive home after completing his commitment “was second best only to the day he was born.” Maggie Puch, 21, a 2008 Burnsville graduate began her military career at the U.S. Naval Academy in 2009 and is in her second class year. She is studying political science with a minor in Spanish. Maggie said that she followed in her older brother’s footsteps but had some of her own reasons for joining as well. “My older brother definitely had some influence after he joined the Marines after high school,” she said. “I knew I wanted to do something different than all my friends. I was being pulled or called to do something greater than the average high school student.” Maggie elaborated on what she felt was also influencing her to join the military. “I knew I wanted to serve my coun-
try. That was my end goal no matter what happened,” she said. “I hope to join the Marine Corps and be a pilot.” Recently, at the request of U.S. Congressman John Kline, Maggie was asked to be part of Kline’s U.S. service academy information day Sept. 17, Diamondhead Education Center, 200 W. Burnsville Parkway. The information day serves as a way for providing information to anyone interested in service academies. Bryan Puch, 19, a 2010 BHS grad, like his brother also enlisted at 17 and left for Marine Corps basic training in September 2010. “Bryan is part of what is called FAST – fleet anti-terrorism security team,” Debbie said. “Right now he is training for his deployment, which is coming up in January, and he’ll be going to Bahrain.” With Tim having served, Bryan’s deployment just around the corner, and the possibility of Maggie being deployed upon completion of her fouryear education from the academy, Debbie said dealing with worry hasn’t been easy. “I don’t think about it as much as I used to. As a family, we are very used to it,” Debbie said. “I just relied on my family and my church family to hold me up. I try not to think about the deployments.”

Dakota County passes zero increase for 2012 tax levy Taxpayers will still see 3-4 percent increase in county taxes due to homestead credit elimination BY MATTHEW HANKEY – SUN NEWSPAPERS On Sept. 13, the Dakota County Board of Commissioners unanimously approved a resolution setting a property tax levy with no increase from last year for 2012. The levy – the total amount of taxes the county needs to collect to balance its budget – will remain at $129.4 million. However, owners of a median-valued home will see a 3- to 4-percent increase in the county portion of their taxes due to a change the state legislature made in homeowner taxes for 2012. In previous years, the Market Value Homestead Credit provided property tax relief to homestead property owners. Under the Market Value Homestead Credit, taxpayers received a credit against the market value of their property and Dakota County was reimbursed by the state the amount the homeowner saved, said Dakota County Financial Services Director Matt Smith. This past session, the state legislature replaced the Market Value Homestead Credit with the Market Value Homestead Exclusion. Under this new system, homestead property owners will still receive a similar benefit, but the state no longer pays for it. Under the new exclusion system, homestead property owners receive an exclusion of a portion of their estimated market value in calculating what the actual taxable market value will be, said Dakota County Commissioner Thomas Egan. The amount Dakota County and other simiEgan lar jurisdictions can calculate its tax on is the taxable market value after the exclusion, Smith said. Dakota County
receives no reimbursement from the state for the amount taken out of the taxable market value like it did under the homestead credit system. “This makes the state look like a hero in the eyes of the property tax Workman payer, but makes it even more difficult for Dakota County to raise the necessary revenue to conduct its business,” Egan said. Dakota County Commissioner Liz Workman said she would like to see the state take credit for the tax shift. “Bottom line, [the state] cut state aid to property tax payers, but when property tax payers look at their statements, it comes up on the county’s line,” said Dakota County Commissioner Liz Workman. “I can’t stress enough, none of the 87 counties in the state of Minnesota are responsible for this,” Workman said. “Counties did not increase your property taxes. The state did.” The county board passed the zero percent increase for the tax levy because it knew a tax increase was coming in 2012 for its taxpayers. “They are very aware of the added tax burden to the taxpayers next year,” Smith said regarding the county board. “They wanted to be very careful not to add anything at the county level to add to that burden.” Smith added that the new tax laws will likely hit other property taxpayers – such as business owners – even harder. They now have to pay a larger share of the dollar amount levied because the state no longer subsidizes the homestead credit tax break. “Business properties could see a 6 percent increase,” Smith said. Dakota County is required to set the proposed property tax levy by Sept. 15 each year. The board is scheduled to adopt the final budget by Dec. 13 along with the final levy. “The Dakota County Board of Commissioners has reduced its budget by nearly 10 percent over the last two years through many means including the reduction of our work force by over
‘I can’t stress enough, none of the 87 counties are responsible for this. Counties did not increase your property taxes. The state did.’
100 positions,” Egan said. “This has allowed us to remain the lowest taxed county in the entire State of Minnesota.” The Dakota County Administrator will present a recommended budget to the County Board on Nov. 1. County budget workshops are sched-
uled Nov. 1-4 with the Truth in Taxation hearing scheduled for 6 p.m. on Nov. 29 at the Dakota County Board Room, Administration Center, 1590 Highway 55 in Hastings. The adoption of the final 2012 budget and property tax levy is scheduled for Dec. 13.

Lone Oak Days 2011 Those who attended the annual Lone Oak Days fall fun event Sept. 24 and 25 at the Holz Farm – a working farm in Eagan as late as the early 1990s – got a hands-on experience to what farm life was like in the 1940s. Pony rides, barnyard animals, rope making, hay rides, a blacksmith demonstration and frontporch acoustic music was only a small taste of what the event offered to the event goers.

Student security – What every college student should know As college students get settled on campus, fighting fraud may not be their top priority. However, college students are susceptible to identity theft and the Better Business Bureau of Minnesota and North Dakota (BBB) recommends that they take seven simple steps to protect themselves on campus. In 2010, 8.1 million Americans – or 3.5 percent of the population – became victims of identity theft, according to the 2011 Identity Fraud Survey conducted by Javelin Strategy & Research and sponsored by the BBB. The average mean cost of identity theft is $631 and the average time to resolve identity fraud is 33 hours – time better spent studying. “Friendly fraud accounts for 14 percent of all ID theft crimes. This means that new roommates and friends have just as much potential to commit dastardly identity theft as foreign-based scam artists phishing on the Internet.
And identity thieves – friend or foe – think nothing of dumpster diving (or rifling through unattended trash cans) for unshredded paperwork or taking mail from desk tops or unlocked mailboxes. They can even cruise social networking sites looking for personal tidbits that may unlock a wealth of information elsewhere. “In this day and age, you can’t always trust your peers, said Dana Badgerow, president and CEO of the BBB. “It’s extremely important for students to be vigilant in monitoring bank and credit card statements to spot unauthorized activity. Sign up for security alerts on your accounts and have them sent to your mobile phone so you’ll know if any changes have been made to your account. The BBB recommends that collegebound students take the following seven steps to fight identity theft on campus: Send sensitive mail to your parents’

home or a post office box. School mailboxes are not always secure and are often easily accessible in a dorm or apartment. Store important documents under lock and key. This includes your Social Security card, passport and bank and credit card statements. Shred credit card offers and any paper documents that have sensitive financial information rather than just tossing them in a dorm trash can. Never lend your credit or debit card to anyone. Just say no if your friend wants to borrow your card or asks you to cosign for a loan or financing for items like a TV. Make sure your computer has up-todate antivirus and spyware software. Always install any updates and patches to your computer’s operating system or
browser software, which help keep your computer safe from any new advances by identity thieves online. Always check your credit or debit card statements closely for any suspicious activity. The sooner you identify any potential fraud, the less you’ll suffer in the long run. Check out and verify unfamiliar websites with the BBB. Look for the BBB Accredited Business seal along with other trust seals; click on the seals to confirm that they are legitimate. Check your credit report at least once a year. You are entitled to one free report a year from each of the three reporting bureaus: TransUnion, Experian and Equifax. Look for any suspicious activity or inaccuracies. (952) 314-2100 commented on the specific fruits and vegetables her farm has been able to provide since this past summer, as well as what they can provide into the fall. “We sold fresh beans, summer squash, zucchini, kohlrabi and cucumbers during the summer,” she said. “When school started in the fall, we were able to sell those items along with tomatoes, potatoes, watermelon, cantaloupe, sweet corn, apples and if the schools want, we have winter squash and pumpkins.” Roxanne Williams, director of food service for District 191, said she has seen how students have reacted to the new produce. “I think we are seeing more fruits and vegetables consumed overall,” she said, adding that it has required a little time and exposure. Though Darcy and her husband have not discussed next year with the district, continuing their sales is something they are more than open to. “We would love to grow again for them next year,” she said. “This year ended sooner than we had planned with the early frost, but we definitely like working with the people at District 191.”

Q: Can I take my car to the repair shop of my choice??
Q: What is gum disease and how do I know if I have it?
A: You have the legal right to choose a repair shop to fix your vehicle. When reporting your claim, immediately let your insurer know which shop you’d like to repair your vehicle. Your insurer should not attempt to influence your decision regarding where to have your vehicle repaired and is obligated to cover the reasonable costs of repairing your vehicle to its pre-accident condition, no matter where you have repairs made.
A: Gum disease begins when bacteria in plaque produce toxins that irritate the gums. If left untreated, this condition may cause a breakdown of the gum tissue and bone, and eventually the teeth become loose, fall out or need to be removed. Signs to watch for are gums that bleed easily or are red and swollen, persistent bad breath, a bad taste in your mouth or loose or separating teeth. Early stages of gum disease are treatable and reversible. If you have any symptoms or concerns about gum disease contact your dentist for a consultation.

Park Nicollet adding eating disorders care services in Burnsville Expansion addressing an increased need BY MICHAEL RICCI • SUN NEWSPAPERS Addressing a growing need may be a driving force for expanding its services, but educating the public about barriers is also part of its goal. As of Monday, Oct. 3, Park Nicollet Melrose Institute will offer its specialized model of treating eating disorders at its Park Nicollet-Burnsville clinic, which will serve as an extension of the medical services offered at its St. Louis Park location. At the clinic, 14000 Fairview Dr., a team of physicians, dieticians and psychologists will work with patients and families in developing a specialized plan for treatment to meet each individual’s needs. The expansion of services to Burnsville is meeting a growing need, according to Matt Lechner, Park Nicollet senior media relations specialist. “Over the past three years, the number of Melrose patients from Dakota County has doubled,” Lechner said in a statement. “This year, more than 15 percent of Melrose patients were Dakota County residents.”
Dr. Joel Jahraus, executive director of the Park Nicollet Melrose Institute, said that the health service facility has had a number of inquiries that led to the expansion. “We have people who have contacted us asking about our program in the south metro,” he said. “This is going to be outpatient services.” Dr. Jahraus believes that the barriers in obtaining eating disorder treatment have begun to come down, but he said there is more work that needs to be done with regard to education. “Families need to have an understanding of how the eating disorder happened and how they can best support their loved one,” he said. Dr. Jahraus said there is a genetic component inherited in many patients, in addition to a biological component associated with eating disorders, and these can be triggered by socio-cultural factors. Jillian Lampert, director of communications, outreach and research for the St. Paul-based Emily Program, said that even
though the barriers or stigmas associated with eating disorders have lowered, it remains a major concern. “It’s an enormous issue,” she said. “There are as many people with eating disorders as there are with breast cancer.” According to Lampert, around 200,000 Minnesotans have eating disorders, and 65,000 of those are adolescents. Of those with a disorder, 90 percent are female and 10 percent are male. With regard to pop culture in the United States, Lampert said most people believe that having an eating disorder is a women’s issue. As a result, men are more hesitant to seek treatment for this type of illness. Echoing Dr. Jahraus, Lampert added that the perception by the general public is that it is a choice. “There are certain physical contributions in the brain,” she said. “It’s not just a choice. That whole area is part of why there is so much of a bigger eating disor-
‘It’s an enormous issue. There are as many people with eating disorders as there are with breast cancer.’
der problem than people realize.” Lampert continued by saying that the bulk of individuals often don’t recognize it as a problem and therefore do not seek treatment. She added that eating disorders affect individuals from 8 to 75 years of age. “It really can take a number of different courses,” she said. Lampert cited the most common signs of an individual dealing with an eating disorder. “You can often see it in how people talk about food and their bodies,” she said. “Food and body comments are pretty common.” Additionally, Lampert said adolescents dealing with eating disorders often become isolated and do not feel comfortable eating with others. Given the potentially fatal outcomes for those dealing with an eating disorder – such as diabetes, cardiac arrest, and suicide – Lampert encourages individuals to get involved. “One thing I often hear from family members or concerned others is if they should say something. I always tell people, ‘Say something.’” Lampert, however, cautioned that this should be done delicately and compassionately.

A homespun hobby helps Bloomington woman keep kids warm BY JONATHAN YOUNG – SUN NEWSPAPERS On the coldest days this winter, Bloomington resident Patricia Halloway will have warm thoughts because 88 children she’s never met will have hats. Halloway recently donated 88 handknit hats to the Coats for Kids campaign sponsored by Pilgrim Cleaners, Sun Newspapers, KARE 11, KFAN and Subway. Making hats to donate wasn’t Halloway’s idea. Halloway, who is retired, learned to knit in her 20s, and she finds it relaxing. She wanted to find a way to use her hobby to help others. “I just like to knit, and I just was looking for a way to knit something for somebody,” she said. Then an aunt who lives in Indiana told Halloway she knits hats for local charities. “I thought, ‘I could do that — I have all this yarn and all this time,’” Halloway said. So Halloway began knitting hats. Then she had to find somewhere to donate the hats. When she heard about the Coats for Kids campaign, she fig-
ured if children needed coats, they probably needed hats too. “I didn’t have coats, but I asked if they would want hats,” she said. That was about three years ago, and she has been making hats for the Coats for Kids campaign ever since. She has also begun donating knitted items to other charities. She said she makes about five or six hats a week in a variety of colors and sizes. Halloway hopes others will get involved however they can. “I’m sure that the 80-some hats I make come far short of the actual need,” she said. Halloway doesn’t think her contribution is worthy of notice, and she doesn’t brag about it. But she does find it rewarding to know children are benefiting from her work. “When it’s really, really cold, I like to think some kids are wearing them to keep warm,” she said. Others who wish to donate to the Coats for Kids campaign can drop donations off at any of the 25 Pilgrim Cleaners locations throughout the metro through Saturday, Oct. 8. The campaign accepts donations of all sizes for all ages, including adults.

Coats may be new or gently used. Schools can also organize their own collections for the campaign. The school that collects the most coats will get a Subway party. The charities receiving coats this year are Sabathani Community Center, Sharing and Caring Hands, Ronald McDonald House of the Twin
Cities, Catholic Charities of St. Paul and Minneapolis, STEP, CEAP, Lutheran Social Services and Hope for the City. Those who wish to send a cash donation should sent it to the “Coats for Kids Fund” c/o Pilgrim Cleaners, 3217 85th Ave. N., Brooklyn Park, MN 55443.

Growing up in Gaylord, MN, Leo was a talented student and athlete, receiving the American Legion Outstanding Boy Award in his senior year at Gaylord High School. He graduated in 1941. During World War II, Leo served as a bomber mechanic in the U.S. Army Air Forces. After the war, he attended Colorado A&M and the University of Minnesota. In 1951, Leo and Kathleen married then started their family the following year. In 1960, Leo started his own company and, with the support of his wife and family, built a successful family-owned business over the decades, first in garden tractors and later in motorcycles. In 1975, Leo founded TwinCities Harley-Davidson, now located in Lakeville and Blaine, MN. Leo loved athletic and intellectual competition. He was an avid Scrabble player and a lifelong Golden Gophers and Vikings fan, with an easy sense of humor and great generosity. Leo will be deeply missed by his wife, family, business associates, employees and friends. A funeral Mass will be held at 10 a.m. on Saturday, October 1, 2011 at Saint John the Baptist Catholic Church, 4625 W. 125th St., Savage, MN. Visitation begins at 9 a.m., preceding the mass. October 21, 1922 September 17, 2011 Rhoda Marie Kramer was the youngest of seven children born on the home farm in Young America, Minnesota to Diedrich Kramer and Mary Thomas. She graduated from Norwood Young America Central High School at age 16, went on to attend business school in Minneapolis and worked at Wunder Klein Donohue. In 1943 she followed her fiance, Evers (Casey) Jones, to California, where they were married in San Diego just prior to Evers’ naval deployment to the South Pacific during WWII. The couple was separated by the war for two years, during which time Rhoda lived in Sacramento with relatives and worked for the Army Signal Corps. In 1945, after the end of the war, the couple returned to Minnesota where they started a residential construction company, E.E. Jones, Inc., first on Cohansey Street in St. Paul and then in the Skyline Dr./Terrace Oaks area of Burnsville. Rhoda was a true partner and helpmate in the family business, keeping the books, designing and decorating the homes, among other duties. The couple moved to Lakeville in their later years, but spent winters in the Rio Grande Valley of Texas. Rhoda delighted in her family above all, and was the quintessential wife, mother, and grandmother. She was a member of the St James and Hosanna Lutheran congregations, a 4-H leader and also enjoyed gardening, walking, square dancing, and spending time at the family lake cabin in Wisconsin. Rhoda is survived by her three children Lane Jones (Carol) of Elko, Lynda Beaudin (Rick) of Prior Lake, and Evers Jones, II (Jody Arman) of Farmington. Grandchildren include Robb Jones (Rebecca) of Dubuque, IA, Lonny Jones (Jennifer) of Northfield, Clayton Jones (Laura) of Kilkenny, Jereme Beaudin (Sarah) of Palmdale, CA, Nathan Beaudin (Maria) of Stillwater, Tom Beaudin (Rachel) of Lakeville, Luke Jones (Kristin) of Cottage Grove, and Erin Jones of St. Paul. Rhoda also leaves behind seven, soon to be nine, greatgrandchildren, Garret, Casey, Abby, Max, Aria, Sophia and Jack. An Open House celebrating Rhoda will be held on Sunday, October 2, 2011, 11 a.m. - 3 p.m. at the Lane and Carol Jones farm, 9476 E. 260th St., Elko, MN 55020. A private graveside service has already been held.
Parenting workshop Echo Park students begins Oct. 3 at taking part in National Kenwood Middle School Walk to School Day The Lakeville and Farmington area school districts have put together a series of four free parenting workshops this year. Info: ce.isd194.k12.mn.us or farmingtonce.com.
National Walk to School Day will take place 8:30 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 5, Lake Alimagnet Park, 1200 Alimagnet Park Drive, Burnsville. Echo Park Elementary School students will gather at Lake Alimagnet Park and walk to school along County Road 11 accompanied by Burnsville police officers and staff from Echo Park and the city. More than 150 Echo Park students will be walking or biking to school during the 2011-2012 school year. Many of those students have to use sidewalks that are along busy county highways and city streets to get to school each day. Earlier this year, Burnsville Police and Public Works staff met with school officials to develop a Safe Route to School program that went into effect with the new school year. The city posted custom signs with the school’s penguin mascot along the safe route, while the school promoted the program to students and parents. Echo Park Elementary is located at 14100 County Road 11, Burnsville.

Blaze responds with big victory Blahnik scores 20th goal as girls soccer team edges 4th-ranked Eagan BY MIKE SHAUGHNESSY • SUN NEWSPAPERS After a loss to Eastview earlier last week, Burnsville girls soccer coach John Soderholm admitted going into a game against fourth-ranked Eagan with just a little bit of apprehension. “I haven’t slept for two nights,” Soderholm said. “Eastview outplayed us [in a 2-0 Lightning victory Sept. 20], and I

was really anxious to see how we would respond.” A first-half goal by sophomore Alyssa Blahnik – one of the state’s leading scorers – was the kind of response Soderholm wanted to see. Sixth-ranked Burnsville made the slim lead hold up for a 1-0 victory Sept. 22. It was the Blaze’s first win against a ranked team. “That was pretty fun,” Soderholm said minutes after the Eagan game. “I’m not going to lie. I’m pretty happy.” Burnsville and Eagan went into this week tied for second place in the South Suburban Conference at 4-2. Both teams had games remaining against conference leader Lakeville North (5-0-1); Eagan’s was Sept. 27, after this edition went to press. Burnsville will play at Lakeville North at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 4. Blahnik has 20 goals in 12 games. Sophomore Abby Soderholm and senior Bailly Drayton each have four goals and six assists for 10 points. Junior Tiana Khamvongsa has five goals. As Blahnik has piled up goals, teams have changed how they mark her. “They’re much more careful with her,” John Soderholm said. “Alyssa has a hard shot and if you let her turn, she’s pretty dangerous.” Junior Meghann Rudolph and ninthgrader Darby Lofhus have been sharing time in goal. Rudolph was in goal during the victory against Eagan. Several of the Blaze’s younger players were on a Burnsville Fire Premier team that won the top Under-16 division at the USA Cup this summer. “We’ve also asked a lot of our captains, Hannah Freden and Bailly Drayton,” John Soderholm said. “Hannah is a good defender and Bailly has scored some big goals for us. They also keep our younger girls on the field focused.” Burnsville was 9-3 overall going into its Sept. 27 home game against Bloomington Jefferson. The Blaze plays a non-conference home game against Edina at 7 p.m. SOCCER: TO NEXT PAGE

Opportunistic defense keeps North unbeaten Rosemount suffers 1st home-field football loss in almost 4 years BY MIKE SHAUGHNESSY • SUN NEWSPAPERS The players on Lakeville North’s defense don’t need to be reminded they’re not big. What’s more important to them is whether they play big. On Sept. 23, the Panthers recovered four Rosemount fumbles, made a game-changing defensive stand inside their own 10-yard line and kept the Irish out of the end zone until the fourth quarter. Big enough? For the Panthers, it was. Lakeville North, ranked eighth in
Class 5A, defeated seventh-ranked Rosemount 28-7 to improve to 4-0. North also is 4-0 in the South Suburban Conference and leads the league by a half-game over Lakeville South. The Lakeville teams are scheduled to play each other Oct. 7 at Lakeville North. To compensate for a lack of size, the North defensive players “just have to do it with a lot of energy, be physical and pursue the football,” said 190pound junior linebacker Mitch Johnson, who had the Panthers’ first two fumble recoveries. Like virtually every football team, Lakeville North practices trying to force fumbles. On Friday, however, FOOTBALL: TO PAGE 29

South Suburban Conference runners near front of the pack Lakeville South wins girls championship at Eagle Invitational BY MIKE SHAUGHNESSY • SUN NEWSPAPERS South Suburban Conference runners put on a show for cross country fans at the Eagle Invitational at Apple Valley High School. Lakeville South won the girls championship at the Sept. 23 meet, dethroning Eden Prairie, and had two runners among the top five individuals. In the boys race, Eagan junior Sidney Speir took the championship and Eastview’s Ken Hoffman and Nick Oelke were third and fourth. Eden Prairie won the boys team championship, with Eastview, Lakeville South and Apple Valley finishing second through fourth. Lakeville South’s girls won for the fourth time in four meets, finishing 14 points ahead of Eden Prairie at the Eagle Invitational
“You can’t really compare times because courses are so different,” Lakeville South coach Jessica Just said. “But we definitely showed a lot of improvement in the Apple Jack meet [which South won Sept. 16], and I think we’re running in a tighter pack now.” Shakopee’s Maria Hauger set a meet record of 13 minutes, 57 seconds in the girls 4K race. Lakeville South ninth-grader Kaytlyn Larson was second in 14:50. Annie Brekken, another ninth-grader for South, finished fifth in 15:11. Also in the Cougars’ top seven were senior Megan Kilbride (16th, 15:36), sophomore Erin Kilbride (21st, 15:42), sophomore Jenny Machaj (22nd, 15:45), sophomore Megan Lubow (23rd, 15:45) and ninth-grader Caraline Slattery (43rdm 16:25). While the Griak Invitational in Falcon Heights, also held Sept. 24, generated more publicity, Just said the Cougars like running in Apple Valley. “We don’t have to send our varsity and JV to two different places,” Just
said (the Griak meet is varsity-only). “There’s good competition here, and we like to support Apple Valley’s meet.” Apple Valley placed sixth in the girls race, with seniors Alexa Nelson and Abbey Singleton finishing 19th and 24th individually. Lakeville South was third in the Eagle Invitational boys meet, with seniors Jake Schneeman (16:55) and Mark Honetschlager (17:02) finishing 10th and 12th in the 5K race. Cash Rodamaker (25th), Wade Durham (27th) and Noah Hanson (32nd) also scored for the Cougars, who scored 106 points. Apple Valley (fourth place, 132 points) was led in the boys meet by senior Alex Brandel and junior Nick Hughes, who finished 13th and 22nd. Burnsville finished eighth at Apple Valley without its top two runners, Cole O’Brien and Abdul Salan, who ran at the Roy Griak Invitational at the University of Minnesota. Ninthgrader Faysol Mamoud finished 11th in 16:56 to lead the Blaze contingent at
the Eagle Invitational.
Griak Invitational Three major invitational meets took place on Sept. 24. In addition to the Eagle Invitational in Apple Valley, runners flocked to the Milaca Mega Meet and Roy Griak Invitational. The Griak meet attracted a strong field to the Les Bolstad Golf Course in Falcon Heights, the same course that will be used for the Section 3AA championships Oct. 26. Burnsville senior Cole O’Brien was eighth of 472 runners in the boys Gold Division 5K race in 16:08.19. Lakeville North senior Ben Saxton also placed in the top 20, taking 19th in 16:24.09. Abdul Salan of Burnsville placed 36th. Lakeville North was 25th of 50 teams in the boys Gold Division. Lakeville North finished 17th and Burnsville was 37th in the girls Gold Division race. Emma Johnson (36th overall) and Taylor Perkins (42nd) led North. Burnsville sophomore Vivian Hett was 15th individually in 19:22.1.

Football FROM PAGE 27 three of Rosemount’s lost fumbles were on the ground even before the Panthers had a chance to rip the ball away. Instead, they settled for falling on the ball and celebrating their good fortune. “We’ll take them any way we can get them,” Lakeville North coach Brian Vossen said. “One thing we emphasize here is that every ball is live. Incomplete pass, fumble, it doesn’t matter. Our kids are supposed to go get the ball.” Rosemount’s veer option is “an offense we don’t see from any other team,” Johnson said. “When we play them, we know we have to watch a lot of film that week.” In past years, Rosemount quarterbacks have created a lot of problems for Lakeville North defenses, Vossen said. “We wanted to figure out when they would throw it,” Vossen said. “And when [Rosemount quarterback Nate Lemoine] decided to keep it, we didn’t want to give up a 70-yard run. We wanted to make them try to beat us using the dive [the first option in Rosemount’s attack]. “All but two times, our guys committed to what they were supposed to do.” Lakeville North’s first touchdown was set up by, yes, a Rosemount fumble. The Irish lost the ball on their first offensive play, with Johnson recovering at the Rosemount 20. Four plays later, Brandon Morgan scored on a 3-yard run to put North ahead. North quarterback Trey Heid threw a 20-yard touchdown pass to Ben Blake with 2:44 remaining in the first half. A 40-yard pass from Heid to Charlie Hayes two plays earlier set up the score. Rosemount made a big to change the momentum in the third quarter, moving the ball from its 21 to the Lakeville North 4. The Panthers’ Karl Finkel then tackled Lemoine for a 3yard loss on third down. On fourth down, Lemoine was tackled after a 3yard gain, but his team needed 4 yards. North then drove 96 yards in six plays, highlighted by Heid’s 51-yard touchdown run on a quarterback draw. “I really like that play,” Heid said, “and it was set up perfectly.” Later in the third quarter, North took possession at the Rosemount 27 after a 12-yard punt. Four plays later, Heid threw an 8-yard touchdown pass to Joel Oxton. Rosemount (3-1) gained 292 yards but lost the ball three times inside the
Lakeville North 30 – twice on downs, once on a fumble. The Irish avoided a shutout on Lemoine’s 18-yard pass to Sean Kalinowski with 6:07 remaining. The loss was the Irish’s first at home since Oct. 27, 2007. Rosemount goes on the road to play undefeated and fourth-ranked Lakeville South at 7 p.m. Friday, Sept. 30. Lakeville North will try to remain undefeated when it plays host to Burnsville on Friday night. Their undefeated record notwithstanding, the Panthers still believe they have something to prove. “Some people didn’t think we’d be that good,” Johnson said. “But we knew we had a strong group this year.”
LV South 42, Jefferson 7 It was over quickly as fourthranked Lakeville South scored all its points in the first half of the Sept. 23 game at Bloomington Stadium. Matt Heller had four catches for 116 yards, including touchdown receptions of 12 and 37 yards in the first quarter. Devon Bzoskie caught five passes for 75 yards and had an 8-yard touchdown catch in the first quarter. Chris Moore, Austin Britnell and Joel Williams had rushing touchdowns in the second quarter. Britnell was the Cougars’ rushing leader with 63 yards on seven carries.

Lakeville South (4-0), ranked fourth in Class 5A, plays at home against Rosemount at 7 p.m. Friday, Sept. 30. Rosemount, last year’s Class 5A runner-up, was ranked seventh in Class 5A last week before losing to Lakeville North 28-7 on Sept. 23.
Prior Lake 13, Burnsville 10 Prior Lake retained the Dan Patch Trophy by edging Burnsville in the Blaze’s homecoming game Sept. 23. Burnsville (1-3) never led in the game, but pulled within three points with less than four minutes to play on a 28-yard touchdown pass from Dan Motl to Will Reger. Motl also kicked a 31-yard field goal in the second quarter. The Blaze was going for its second consecutive victory and might have gotten it if penalties had not negated two touchdown runs. Up next for Burnsville is a game at eighth-ranked Lakeville North (4-0) at 7 p.m. Friday, Sept. 30.

season, the Wildcats got it in emphatic fashion Sept. 23. Five different Eagan players scored touchdowns and the defense held Apple Valley to 91 yards. Michael Busch rushed for 82 yards and scored two touchdowns for the Wildcats, who led 34-0 at halftime. Quarterback Drew Bauer passed for 137 yards and two touchdowns, and rushed for 72 yards and one score. Apple Valley (0-4) goes to Eastview at 7 p.m. Friday, Sept. 30.
