Designs, ideas more environmentally friendly BY MICHAEL RICCI • SUN NEWSPAPERS She abandoned her original college major of neuroscience to follow a dream in fashion, and now the opportunity to really get noticed is just weeks away. Lakeville resident Yvette Willaert will be one of several fashion design students of St. Catherine University’s Fashion Merchandising and Design program whose work will be displayed during the 2011 Girlfriends Expo & Getaway event Friday-Saturday, Nov. 18-19, at Treasure Island Resort and Casino, 5734 Sturgeon Lake Road, Welch. As a young girl, Willaert did what many did at her age – she drew pictures of princesses in pretty dresses, but as the time passed, this fascination gave way to pragmatism. Before she knew it, Willaert was a student of St. Olaf College in Northfield, studying neuroscience from September 2008 to December 2009. But this suddenly ended one day when Willaert had a mini-revelation of sorts. “I love science and I’ve always had a passion for the human brain,” she said. “It is a hobby of mine. I love the subject, but I didn’t want to be a doctor.” Soon, the Lakeville native redirected her path toward the world of fashion by enrolling at St. Catherine University to pursue her childhood dream. But unlike others in the industry, Willaert wishes to design in a more environmentally friendly manner. EXPO: TO PAGE 2

Optional preschool class run through LV Community Ed. BY MICHAEL RICCI SUN NEWSPAPERS A new preschool option to be offered this fall is aimed at addressing the needs of two groups of students and families — those hoping to learn English, those hoping to learn Spanish. The dual-language preschool class will be much like existing classes offered through District 191 Community Education, except instruction, labels in the room and other locations, wherever necessary, will be presented in both English and Spanish. Rebecca Richardson, who will be the lead teacher in the Model Alexys Eskola, at the 2011 Katwalk at St. Catherine’s University May 14, displayed one of Lakeville resident Yvette Willaert’s designs, an organic and socially responsible cotton gown striped with cream and pecan, along with an organic cotton underskirt. “I had a dream of one day owning my own company that provides clothing with a conscience,” Willaert said. “I honestly hope to some day change the face of fashion, which is currently ego-centric and wasteful in many ways.” In America we have what is called “fast fashion,” according to Willaert. She said it is a mentality of wanting intrend clothing “now.” “In doing so, the industry is putting clothing out there that is harmful to the environment,” she said. “They don’t think about how they are using their resources.” Willaert pursued her fashion design education, taking courses since early 2010 and augmenting these with courses in apparel design and studio art. Her studies and related work put her in the annual St. Catherine University Katwalk, a show for students to display their works. “We each presented small collections of work at the show,” she said. “One of my classmates, Brianna Westlund, was approached. She said we have this opportunity.” The opportunity of which Westlund spoke was the 2011 Girlfriends Expo & Getaway. In addition to displaying the same designs as she did at the Katwalk event, Willaert said it also allowed those who were invited to display any new designs. “[Westlund] told me that they thought
we’d be a good addition to the show,” Willaert added. “I pray that the expo will open doors for us, my classmates and I into the world of fashion.” Currently, however, Willaert said it was hard work due to all of the solo work involved, such as pattern making, sewing, and designing. But she added that it is a way of getting their names out there and having people see what she and her classmates are capable of producing. “In the process, sometimes I lose sight of that dream of having my own company,” she said. “But when people…give us a wonderful opportunity like this, they awaken that eagerness and excitement once again.” According to Michelle Roddie, vice president of Mid-America Events and Expos, the company that puts on Girlfriends Expo & Getaway, this year is the third for the expo and the first year with student involvement. “They have a 35-minute timeslot,” Roddie said of each participant. “It will definitely be a great opportunity for the attendees to see what up-and-coming fashion designers have out there.” Roddie continued by saying the expo will not only allow students to display their designs but also to make possible arrangements with potential buyers for custom-made designs. Though the work Willaert is putting into her designs in preparation for the expo may be difficult, this hasn’t detracted from her focus. “The young students like ourselves really bear our hearts when we show a collection,” she said. “It’s very exciting.”

Dual FROM PAGE 1 class this fall, said the initial plan involved Spanish immersion, meaning a Spanish-only classroom designed just for teaching English-speaking children. However, the need to connect more with Spanish-speaking families and the opportunity to provide a learning experience that benefitted more than one group provided the impetus for changing to dual-language. “We were thinking of a more effective way for the children to learn a language,” Richardson said. “It is different from an immersion classroom because we are both supporting English-language learning as well as Spanish-language learning.” Richardson added that the key difference between immersion instruction and dual-language rests with supporting both forms of language learning. “That’s the key difference,” she added, “and that’s why we opted for dual-language.” Richardson commented on what she
referred to as positive feedback from families, with children in Spanish immersion classes, about implementing the dual-language class. “They were all very excited about their child being exposed to another language,” Richardson said. “Watching the demographics of the people who are using community education services and classes, there is a large Spanishspeaking population that takes part, and we wanted to meet their needs and we wanted to meet the needs of the families with English-speaking children … who would like to learn Spanish.” With regard to the changing demographics, Minnesota has experienced much growth in its Hispanic population during the past 10 years. According to 2010 U.S. Census results, the Hispanic population in the state has increased nearly 75 percent, with Hispanics now representing 4.7 percent of the state’s population. In Dakota County, that percentage is even higher. Also according to the U.S. Census Bureau, the Hispanic population percentage is at 6 percent, up 1.3 percent from 2000. In real numbers, the Hispanic population increased from
10,459 to 23,966 from 2000 to 2010. Richardson took a moment to comment on how she believes the dual-language class will benefit all interested parties. “Learning from their peers is the most effective way to reinforce what an adult would want a child to learn and to see that reinforced throughout their peers,” she said. “The ideal model would be half Spanish-speaking students, half English-speaking students and creating relationships at that age, removing the barriers that can sometimes get in place when children are not able to communicate one another very effectively.” Setty Attias, owner of Espanol Sin Limites, a small, private Spanish language teaching company in Burnsville, supports the concept, citing the benefits as she sees them. “I think it’s very beneficial to expose children to a second language and a different culture,” Attias said, basing this on nearly 30 years of teaching experience in both Mexico and the United States. “I think that helps them in the language way, but also to accept differences in culture,” she added.
A native Spanish-speaker herself, Attias earned a degree in elementary education and has worked in private and public schools teaching Spanish, among other subjects. For the past 10 years, Attias has been teaching Spanish as part of her business, located at 14581 Grand Ave. S., Ste. 103-104, in Burnsville. Attias further commented on what she believes are the long-term benefits of learning both languages. “When I have taught middle school students who have never studied another language, I tell them some of the rules of language that are different from English,” she said. “Understanding the structure of language has helped them understand their own language.” Attias added that, based on her experience as one arriving in the U.S. about 10 years ago, learning English helps people in the workforce. “Nowadays, being bilingual helps you get a job,” she said. The class will be a full-day program, meeting from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Diamondhead Education Center, 200 W. Burnsville Parkway. Info: 952-707-4150.

Remembering 9/11 and our patriotism within our country and communities When America was attacked with fierce malevolence by a group of individuals whose primary goal was simply to kill Americans, it awakened the majority of its citizenry to a sense of patriotism that is continuing to this day. Unfortunately, that patriotism had been dormant for several decades, but the attack gave that same majority renewed pride in being Americans. This resurgence of patriotism and pride is still being expressed in many forms, namely through private- and nonprofit-sector organizations. But shortly after the attack, a small minority of individuals, and institutions, did not (and probably still do not) share those sentiments. Although many of these forms of patriotism continue to be symbolic in nature, they are an outward expression of something that has been deep in the hearts of all of us who continue to be proud citizens of the greatest nation in history. Though, we the majority may not need these symbols of patriotism to feel the pride in being an American, it is still heartwarming to see public displays of it at communitywide events held each and every year, along with the private homes displaying Old Glory proudly. The exception regarding this resurgence of patriotism and American pride lies with a minority of Americans who abhor “flag waving.” Interestingly enough, they find themselves conflicted, and it is eating them up inside since they know they hold a very unpopular view.
MICHAEL RICCI Burnsville/Lakeville Community Editor
These individuals think expressing patriotism is in some way offensive and arrogant, and this thinking was not limited to the thoughts of those hanging out at their respective coffee shop sipping their double-mocha-espressolatte cappuccino, as it has reared its ugly head in the halls of academia and many other segments of society, some of which are taxpayerfunded. Reported only nine days after the attack by the Ft. Meyers News-Press, librarians at a Florida university were told they could not wear “I’m proud to be American” stickers on their clothing, for fear that it may offend foreign students attending the university. This decision was clearly made with its roots undoubtedly in the all too familiar and pervasive ideology of political correctness. As anyone who respects the freedom and opportunity granted to us by our constitution might imagine, this ridiculous policy choice prompted a reaction by many who were equally offended. Fortunately, the idiotic policy was reversed after alumni and students loudly voiced their protest. Also only nine days after the attack, the Los Angeles Times reported the views of three individuals. A Los Angeles area educator said, “I grew up suspicious of the
flag. It meant right-wing politics. It meant repression. It meant arrogance. It meant ‘We’re the greatest.’” The host of a public radio show said, “…waving the flag feels like giving carte blanche to Congress and the president to do whatever. And I don’t believe that.” And a Venice, Calif., political activist said, “Haven’t people learned anything in the last 30 years? Haven’t they been watching what America has been doing around the world? Instead of feeling humility and compassion, it seems like the flag is being flown to just arrogantly continue what we’ve been doing.” It was remarkable to see that someone in the education field had such an angry and bitter view of the American Flag, and by extension all that it represents. This is someone society entrusts to teach? How do you suppose that others in the education field here in Minnesota who share the same view teach American history? This question of course is rhetorical since we all know that American history is either not taught in many of our schools, or it is taught in revisionist form. Especially shocking were the views coming from the public radio show host. How did the highly patriotic establishment of taxpayer-funded public broadcasting ever allow for such anti-American discourse on its airwaves? Yes, another rhetorical question, as if we expect anything less from it. Public broadcasting has long been a vehicle for certain people to spew such nonsense. And not surprising was
that the criticism of America by the political activist was unsubstantiated. Perhaps that activist should remain silent until he or she gets a real job and begins to contribute to society more productively. It is through such responsible living that one begins to experience the self-reliance, arguably one of the principles upon which our country was founded, that has made America the greatest place to live and call home. Many people from all over the world come to this country to become proud, patriotic Americans and realize the American dream. They flee their homelands that fail to provide the opportunity available here in the United States. Like them, my ancestors came to this country from Italy and Poland poor, uneducated, and unable to speak the language. And like all the others who came from all corners of the world, they too shared the American dream — a dream that is not immediately recognized once one steps off the boat but rather worked for and handed down incrementally to future generations. As my father and mother were provided more opportunities than their parents, I too am being provided opportunities that were not only unavailable to them, but also inconceivable to all of my grandparents. I am proud of my ancestors who took the risk of leaving their home country for a new world, and I am even more unabashedly proud to be a patriotic American myself, fully aware of the opportunity this land offers.

New Lakeville Senior Coalition celebrates with kickoff event Motivational speaker featured at event BY MICHAEL RICCI • SUN NEWSPAPERS Laugh often, love much, live strong – this is the theme of a new Lakeville senior group’s kickoff event to take place next month. The newly formed Lakeville Senior Coalition will host its kickoff event Sunday, Oct. 16, at St. John’s Lutheran Church, 20165 Heath Ave., Lakeville, to celebrate the formation of the new organization, solely designed to address the needs of Lakeville’s aging population, and it will include an appearance by motivational Gaye Hanson. “Gaye will share ways to laugh more, love more and age powerfully,” read press release through Dakota County. “Using her trademark enthusiasm and wit, she will suggest strategies for growing stronger than ever through humor, attitude, and service.” Coalition members include the Lakeville Senior Center, Lakeville Area Community Education, the Dakota County Heritage Library, the Parish Nurse Ministry of St. John’s Lutheran Church, and Highview Hills Senior Living Community. According to coalition member Luann Phillipich, who’s also a librarian at the Heritage library location in Lakeville, the idea to form the coalition originated during the summer. “We started meeting in July 2010 to explore the possibility of getting together and doing this,” Phillipich said of herself and heads of other member organizations. She added that the representatives met to learn what each organization had to offer, and to potentially eliminate any duplication of services. Phillipich continued, saying that awareness was one of the main benefits of the coalition. “If each of us has awareness in our own communities, we are better able to get them to where they need to go for help,” she said of those the group intends to serve. As an example, Phillipich hypothetically said if a senior asks her a tax-related question while she’s at the Heritage library, she could quickly look at the senior center website. She said this is simply a way of streamlining the process. Renee Brekken, enrichment and marketing manager for Lakeville Community Education, commented on what she feels
Gaye Hanson is another benefit. “The nice thing about the coalition is that you can see all of the resources provided separately by each agency, as well as the programs and classes that we are collaborating on,” Brekken said. Brekken added that in addition to celebrating the formation of the coalition with a kickoff event, featuring a motivational speaker, coalition leads are looking to the future by implementing a series of classes. “We are looking at a spring event,” she said. “It’s actually going to be a series of presentations that focus on care-giving. People sometimes find themselves in that position.” Hanson, in keeping with her theme of “laugh often, love much, live strong,” said the purpose of her appearance is to emphasize the importance for seniors, as well as everyone, to learn to laugh and to keep a sense of humor in aging. “When I speak I have a central message of motivation in choosing to be powerful in our attitude,” Hanson said. “We don’t need to be blowing in the wind with everything hat happens to us. We can choose that in the bad times that ‘I’m going to make it through.’” The Lakeville Senior Coalition’s mission is to “educate the community by promoting discussion of issues and resources that affect the body, mind and spirit of our aging population.” This event is free, open to the public, and appropriate for seniors, their families and caregivers, and anyone who is interested in aging gracefully. BHS teacher unveiling first solo art exhibit Exhibit a part of Burnsville Fire Muster BY MICHAEL RICCI • SUN NEWSPAPERS An advocate of art students acquiring real life experience, one Burnsville teacher will soon be acquiring some experience of his own. Tim Hammes, a Burnsville High School art teacher, has been working on his first solo art exhibit in more than 25 years, called “Hearts and Flowers.” It is a collection of 10 paintings and five photographs that will be displayed at The Great Frame Up, 1004 W. County Road 42, in Burnsville, Sept. 9 through Oct. 7 as part of the Burnsville Fire Muster celebration. The opening will be 4:30-7:30 p.m. Friday, Sept. 9. Due to Hammes’ history with Marilyn and Tim Hanson, owners of The Great Frame Up, it was a natural choice for the artist to display his work at the store. According to Hammes, the Hansons and their staff have been instrumental in creating opportunities for students to display their work in the community, which later led to his own exhibit. “Whatever we can do to help them out,” Marilyn said. “Over the summer I wanted to showcase some of the artists that come in here.” The Hansons have expanded opportunities for four local artists,
which includes Hammes, through their Summer Artist Spotlight series. Marilyn said the purpose of the series was to draw attention to more local artists and to let community members know there are some very talented artists in Burnsville. Hammes, who has been teaching visual arts in Independent School District 191 for more than 20 years, clarified how long it’s actually been since he had his own display. “It has probably been since college days, 25 years or so,” he said, adding the he usually participates in group shows through the Burnsville Visual Arts Society. But this year will be greatly different for the painter and photographer. “This has been my big summer project,” Hammes said about his 10 new paintings he has created since school ended this past June, in addition to the five photographs that complete the exhibit of 15 pieces. “The photographs are five close-up flower images.” According to Hammes, he has been using the heart theme for more than 25 years, and he took a moment to explain his approach to painting, which has largely been inspired by the works of Jackson Pollock, an American painter known for his abstract expressionism. “He is one of my art heroes. This is kind of a variation of that,” Hammes said. “The way I apply paint is I splatter it on. I don’t do a whole lot of painting with an actual brush.” Regarding his photography,
Marilyn said, “All of his photographs are untouched. They are not digitally manipulated.” Hammes said he works on more than one painting at a time, but by even doing this, the time it took to complete all 10 of his pieces was not exactly short. I would say that each of the paintings is probably a three to four hour process,” Hammes said, adding that this does not include the time it takes to frame each painting. Despite the exposure Hammes will likely receive as a result of his pieces being displayed, this is not what’s most important for the longtime teacher. Hammes is also an advocate for children having proper food and nutrition, to the point where he has been a supporter of BHS’s youth service project “BrainPower in a BackPack,” the aim of which is “to improve the student learning experience for elementary students with the greatest need at two ISD 191 schools by providing them with a backpack of weekend food to keep them energized for school.” “10 percent of the proceeds will be donated to the BrainPower in the BackPack,” Hammes said. Last year Hammes worked with BrainPower Coordinator Fay Finn to create the “Empty Bowls for Full Bellies” project. He and Finn are currently planning their second Empty Bowls project for the upcoming school year. Info: hammesart.com.

Winter will be here before you know it, and a lot of kids will need coats. Sun Newspapers and Pilgrim Cleaners are once again sponsoring the Coats for Kids campaign, and this year’s goal is to collect 10,000 coats for needy children and families in the area. The public can donate new and gently used children’s coats at any of the 25 Pilgrim Cleaners throughout the metro area during the collection period, which runs Monday, Sept. 12, through Saturday, Oct. 8. Schools can also organize their own collections for the campaign. The school that collects the most coats will get a Subway party. Pilgrim Cleaners will clean all used coats collected. Then the new and used coats will be donated to eight charities: Sabathani Community Center, Sharing and Caring Hands, Ronald McDonald House of the Twin Cities, Catholic Charities of St. Paul and Minneapolis, STEP, CEAP, Lutheran Social Services and Hope for the City. Those who wish to send a cash donation should send it to the “Coats for Kids Fund” c/o Pilgrim Cleaners, 3217 85th Ave. N., Brooklyn Park 55443. Exercise can benefit every age group Even moderate amounts of exercise show distinct benefits BY ROXI REJALI – CONTRIBUTING WRITER When Deb Sellstedt misses a workout, she feels out of sorts. At least twice a week, she works out at the Fit U Studio in Burnsville. After more than a year of exercise, the trim and petite 60-year-old reports more energy and less back pain caused by scoliosis or curvature of the spine. “There have been a few weeks when I was only able to go once a week and I didn’t even feel right. I just felt like something was missing,” said the Burnsville resident. “It gives you the sense that you’re doing something good for yourself.” Sellstedt is on her feet up to 10 hours a day as assistant general manager of a White Castle restaurant in Apple Valley. “It seems like it’s easier to get through the work day, since I’ve been coming here,” she said. Sellstedt is reaping the rewards of exercise. A growing body of research shows that exercise is good for people at any age.
Exercise can play an important role in controlling the growing national epidemic of obesity. Thirty-four percent of U.S. adults are obese, while 17 percent of children and teens are obese, according to the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Fitness is important for children because it builds healthy muscles, bones and joints. Most kids need an hour of exercise a day. It sounds like a lot, but most children get that amount walking to school, playing on a jungle gym or climbing trees. Teenagers may get their quota during physical education classes or competitive sports like basketball or swimming. Exercise can help adults lose and maintain weight, reduce the risk of heart disease, diabetes and some cancers. Physical activity can also improve mental health and mood, reducing the risk of depression and improving sleep. Exercise is even more important for older adults, increasing their chance of living independently and continuing to do everyday activities like climbing stairs, shopping for groceries or playing with grandchildren. Muscle strength and balance exercises can also help prevent injuries caused by falls, according to the CDC.

Fitness advice can be confusing and contradictory, even if it comes from the experts. CDC guidelines call for at least 150 minutes (2.5 hours) a week of moderate-intensity aerobic activity for adults. But in August, a much-publicized study in The Lancet health journal showed that adults who exercised for as little as 15 minutes per day had a 3-year longer life expectancy than adults who didn’t exercise at all. The benefits applied to men and women of all age groups and even to those with heart disease. Those conflicting guidelines may discourage many people from doing any exercise at all, said Mark Blegen, associate professor of exercise and sport science at St. Catherine University in St. Paul. A more successful and realistic strategy may be to encourage people to add smaller increments of activity to their day. “If we can build some activity into people’s day, then we may not have to sit here and say, ‘You’ve got to go and sweat your behind off at the gym for 30 to 60 minutes,’” he said. Those small steps that can add up to big fitness gains, Blegen said. For example, consider taking the stairs instead of an elevator or parking your car farther

While sitting at an office desk, take breaks every hour to stand up, stretch and walk around. Group activities are a natural for families, he said. Parents might take a child to a park, playground or swimming pool or invite family members to take the dog for a walk around the neighborhood. “I think that’s a wonderful thing, because not only are you not sitting down now, but you’re modeling behavior for your child that they can carry with them for the rest of their lives,” he said. CHRIST LUTHERAN
Our desire is to simply follow Jesus and encourage others to do the same. If you are searching for a deeper walk with God and a fellowship of people who can encourage you in that journey, we hope you will come and join us as we strive to serve the Lord and bless others. The Churches of Christ are part of a unity and “back to the Bible movement that has roots in the Reformation. This movement gained momentum in the United States in the early 1800s. It is often referred to as the “Restoration Movement because of the desire to restore qualities and characteristics of the church described in the New Testament. Since the focus of the early church was on the life, death, burial, resurrection, ascension and coming of Jesus Christ; it is ours as well.

LV North victory could get pollsters’ attention Panthers drub Eastview in SSC football opener BY MIKE SHAUGHNESSY • SUN NEWSPAPERS Beware the team that thinks it’s being disrespected. Lakeville North looked at the preseason Class 5A football rankings, saw its name nowhere in the top 10, and thought, “why not?” Worse yet, one forecast of the South Suburban Conference standings had the Panthers placing fifth in the 10-team league. That riled them up. “We didn’t understand it,” North quarterback Trey Heid said. “We have more returning players than just about any team in the state. More fuel for the fire, I guess.” That fire torched eighth-ranked Eastview in a 42-17 Lakeville North victory Sept. 1 in a sweltering South Suburban opener for both teams. The Lightning, with one returning starter on defense, had trouble keeping up with the North offense, which rolled for 421 yards. “It’s a long season. Right now Lakeville North is a better team than we are,” Eastview coach Kelly Sherwin said. “For us, the key is, what kind of team are we going to be six or seven weeks from now?” North coach Brian Vossen said the Panthers set a goal of 40 points for the season opener. They got there with help from their defense, which returned an interception for a touchdown in the first quarter. It wasn’t the best start for Lakeville North, which lost a fumble near the Eastview goal line after marching down the field on its first possession. But after the defense forced Eastview to punt, Panthers junior Brandon Morgan returned it 42 yards to the Eastview 8-yard line. Heid scored on an 8-yard run two plays later. Moments later, North cornerback Zach Creighton returned an interception 23 yards for a score and Panthers were up 130. Eastview regrouped and drove 93 yards for a score, with the final play a 27-yard pass from Ryan Reger to Kenyon Phillips. That meant two teams that couldn’t muster a touchdown between the in the 2010 season opener (North won that game

Heid’s 22-yard pass to Charlie Hayes made it 19-7 early in the second quarter. Eastview has almost 600 pounds of force on the right side of its offensive line (305-pound guard Zack Johnson and 280pound tackle Michael Backus, but the Lightning couldn’t make optimum use of it because it was playing catch-up the entire game. Eastview pulled out a double pass to score in the second quarter, with Henry McIsaac throwing 45 yards to Adam Moorse for the touchdown. North’s Heid kicked a 31-yard field goal on the last play of the first half, making North’s lead 22-14. Still in the game, Eastview threatened on its first possession of the second half, moving inside the Lakeville North 10 on nine running plays and a pass interference penalty. The drive stalled, and Eastview settled for a 25-yard field goal by Sam Fluegge.
That drive answered a key question for Lakeville North, which has no defensive starters heavier than 220 pounds. They could hold up if Eastview tried to pound them with its running game. “One part of our game plan was to keep moving,” Vossen said. “We started the game with three defensive linemen but found out quickly that didn’t work; [Eastview] scored when we were using three linemen. We changed our front, went to four guys, and it made a big difference.” After holding Eastview to the field goal, Lakeville North scored the next three times it had the ball. Morgan had a pair of 2-yard touchdown runs and Isaac Sandberg scored on an 8-yard run. Heid completed 19 of 24 passes – including all nine of his throws in the second half – for 224 yards. Hayes caught 11 passes for 130 yards, and Sandberg rushed 12 times for 105 yards. “Their quarterback [Heid] was outstanding,” Sherwin said. “And they proFOOTBALL: TO PAGE 24
The Lakeville School District has posted openings for a head boys hockey coach and head softball coach, meaning that longtime Lakeville coach Randy Schmitz is not returning in those two positions. Schmitz coached Lakeville High School and Lakeville North boys hockey teams to six state tournament appearances. The Panthers’ best finish at state was in 2011, when they won the consolation championship in the Class AA tournament and finished fifth overall. Schmitz also was coach of Lakeville softball teams that finished second in the 2001 and 2005 state Class 3A tournaments. Other coaching openings in the Lakeville district include head coaching positions for softball and girls lacrosse at Lakeville South High School.

Optimism running high at Lakeville North

Maybe some good is about to come from all those injuries Lakeville North had last year. By the end of the 2010 football season, the Panthers were starting eight juniors and four sophomores. They still went 7-3, and now they enter 2011 with returnees at more than half of the starting positions. “There’s no question” that last year’s injuries played a role in the experience the Panthers have coming back this year, coach Brian Vossen said during preseason workouts. “For the first time, at least since North has been open, we have good depth. And that’s important in our conference. The South Suburban is so competitive, top to bottom.” The players have high expectations, and they realize others feel the same way. “Last year we were considered overachievers, although we didn’t really think so,” quarterback Trey Heid said. “We thought we were a good team, and we think we’re a good team this year.” Vossen said he was impressed with the team’s attention to detail through the first two weeks of practice. The reason for that, Vossen said, is probably the depth. If a player loses focus, perhaps he also loses his spot in the lineup. “We’ve seen a lot of good defense-vs.offense competition,” Vossen said. The Panthers are coming off a successful summer. They won a Minnesota Vikings-sponsored 7-on-7 passing tournament at the Lakeville North stadium (they passed on going to the national tournament, electing to stay home and continue their preparations for the 2011 season). The offensive linemen won their challenges at a camp in Shakopee an finished second to Lakeville South at a similar camp at the University of Wisconsin-
difference for the Fire. After allowing a Holy Family goal in the first, the Eagles tied the game with a goal in the second half. Apple Valley’s last loss was in the 2008 state Class AA quarterfinals. The Eagles went 23-0 in winning the 2009 state title and 24-0 in winning the 2010 championship. They defeated Owatonna 3-1 in their 2011 season opener Aug. 25. The previous state-record winning streak was 40, set by Stillwater in 1995-97. The Stillwater teams of that era also have the state’s longest unbeaten streak at 62 games. Apple Valley’s 48game winning run is also the state’s secondlongest unbeaten streak.

Returnees A.J. Miller and Mike Manikowski lead an offensive line that will try to create opportunities for Heid to run and throw. Last year Heid threw for 1,024 yards and nine touchdowns and rushed for 157 yards in making the allconference team. Junior Isaac Sandberg could be ready to take over as a workhorse running back after being second on the team in rushing yardage last season. Charlie Hayes, whose 18 catches were second most on the team last year, and Joel Oxton are returning receivers. One of the best sophomores in the South Suburban in 2010 was Lakeville North defensive end Karl Finkel, who had seven sacks and was named all-conference. Senior Luke Goeman also returns on the defensive line. Starting linebackers Austin Streit, Mitch Johnson and Alex Wood all
return. Streit is a senior, while Johnson and Wood are juniors. Senior Zach Creighton is a returning cornerback and also can play quarterback in a pinch. Mike Koloski, another returnee, will be in the secondary. “For the most part, our strength is quickness,” Miller said. “We’re pretty strong too, but I think we can run with anybody.” The Panthers are deeper than last year, but another unexpected run of injuries could cause problems. “There’s no way to predict injuries, so you can’t be worried about them,” Koloski said. “We need to play our regular game.” After opening its season with a 42-17 victory at home against Eastview on Sept. 1 (see related story elsewhere in this section), Lakeville North will play at Apple Valley at 7 p.m. Friday, Sept. 9, in the Eagles’ home opener.
Lakeville South’s Cougars like their chances BY MIKE SHAUGHNESSY SUN NEWSPAPERS Optimism runs high during the second week of every high school’s football workouts. It’s no different at Lakeville South. The difference is that the Cougars might be able to maintain the swagger all season. “We have seniors who are pretty good football players, and they like to play,” South coach Larry Thompson said following practice last week. “We’ll be

OK.” South’s rivals in the South Suburban Conference might consider that an understatement. With six returning starters on defense and an offense that looks ready to air it out, the Cougars figure to be contenders for the conference championship. South’s returning players are counting on it. But the schedule will require the Cougars to be on their game early. They opened at home against Eagan on Sept. 2, then play at Eastview at 7 p.m. Friday, Sept. 9.
The Cougars, who were 8-4 last year and lost to Rosemount in the state Class 5A quarterfinals, return key defensive players such as defensive tackle Brandon Meek, cornerback Matt Melhorn, free safety Nick Sanborn, linebacker/safety Nevin Andreas and linebacker Eric Heintze. Senior Trent Bertamus, who Thompson describes at the team’s fastest player, missed some practices because of a strained hamstring. If he is COUGERS: TO NEXT PAGE
Burnsville senior Cole O’Brien is ranked first among Class AA boys individuals in the first state high school cross country coaches association rankings. O’Brien was second at the 2010 state Class AA meet. He missed the end of the 2011 spring track season because of a leg injury. South Suburban Conference teams are prominent in the Class AA rankings. Rosemount is ranked third among boys teams, with Eastview and Burnsville tied for ninth. On the girls side, Lakeville South is ranked second behind Monticello, with Rosemount at No. 12. Rosemount’s Nathan Rock is seventh in the Class AA boys individual rankings. Eagan junior Elizabeth Frick is ranked 11th among Class AA girls.
LV South field issues Several Lakeville South High School athletic events – including the Sept. 2 season-opening football game against Eagan – were relocated because of what school officials determined were unplayable conditions at the Lakeville South stadium field. Most of the games were moved to Lakeville North High School, which has an artificial turf field at its stadium. The Lakeville South stadium has a grass field. These upcoming Lakeville South soccer games will be played at Lakeville North: • Boys and girls vs. Chaska, 3 and 5 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 10. • Boys and girls vs. Burnsville, 5 and 7 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 13. No lower-level Lakeville South football or soccer games were moved or rescheduled. In a statement on the high school’s website, Lakeville South activities director Neil Strader said unfavorable weather during the summer set back the field preparation. The school held a couple of preseason events on the stadium field before closing it for additional work. School officials are hoping to reopen the stadium field in time for Lakeville South’s home football game against Apple Valley on Sept. 16.

Lakeville North took us out of a lot of things we wanted to do.” We’ll find out soon if the rankings pollsters took note of Lakeville North’s performance. Heid said he believes the Panthers have made a strong case to be ranked. “We punted once tonight,” he said. “They stopped us once. And our defense was great. “I think we made our point.”
Also on Opening Week • Defending South Suburban Conference champion Rosemount defeated Bloomington Kennedy 28-6 in its 2011 season opener. Senior running back Logan Lindberg scored three touchdowns, one on a 76-yard punt return and two on passes from senior quarterback Nate Lemoine (19 and 13 yards). Lindberg also kicked four extra points. Lemoine completed seven of 14 passes for
106 yards. • Bloomington Jefferson spoiled Tyler Krebs’ debut as Burnsville head coach, edging the Blaze 20-18. Jefferson scored all of its points in the second half in erasing a 6-0 Burnsville halftime lead. One problem for the Blaze was failing to get a conversion after each of its three touchdowns. • Apple Valley lost 47-9 to Hopkins in a non-conference game at Hopkins High School. Eagles quarterback Matt Thomas scored on a 1-yard run in the first quarter. A 65yard pass from Thomas to Steven Wilson helped set up the touchdown. Junior linebacker Riley Berg got a safety for Apple Valley by tackling a Hopkins running back in the end zone. • Because of early Labor Day holiday deadlines, the Sept. 2 Lakeville SouthEagan game took place after this edition went to press. A game story is on MinnLocal.com.
Friday’s games Defending state Class 5A champion Wayzata visits Eagan in a non-conference game that is part of the high school football schedule for Friday, Sept. 9. South Suburban Conference games include Burnsville at Rosemount, Lakeville North at Apple Valley and Lakeville South at Eastview. All games start at 7 p.m.

could see playing time at receiver, as could transfer Ty Powell. Last year’s top two rushers graduated, but returning running backs Braden Kaufenberg and Austin Britnell got some carries last year. Even though Lakeville South is expected to have a dangerous passing game, Thompson is looking for balance. After the Cougars were held without a touchdown in back-to-back games last year, they started running the ball more and the result was a five-game winning streak that carried them to the state playoffs. “When our linemen were in a twopoint stance all the time, they played tentatively,” Thompson said. “I like to see our line in a three-point stance, coming off the football.” The Cougars have some size up front with seniors Kory Lundeen (310 pounds), Tom Ryan (260) and Scott Newby (255). Senior Connor Stoffregen also returns, and junior Matt Leidner (Mitchell’s brother) is expected to be the center. “I think we’re ahead of schedule because we have so many guys returning,” Mitchell Leidner said. “Everybody’s excited for the season to start.”
FROM PREVIOUS PAGE recovered in time for the Eagan game, he will start at cornerback. Heintze said the Cougars are deep enough on defense that everybody is under pressure to perform. “Everybody has a chance to step up,” Heintze said. “The guys who are playing the best are the ones who are going to start. It won’t matter what grade you’re in.” While the defense expects to hold up its end, the South offense is expected to attract a lot of attention. Quarterback Mitchell Leidner passed for 2,097 yards and 17 touchdowns last season. He had six touchdown passes in a game against Bloomington Jefferson. Leidner played well enough in a 7-on7 passing tournament at the University of Minnesota during the summer that the Gophers offered him a scholarship, which he accepted. He is expected to graduate from high school early and enroll at Minnesota in January. Seniors Matt Heller and Devon Bzoskie caught a combined 85 passes for 1,179 yards last season. Bertamus also
