Lakeville snowmobile club getting revved up Official riding season begins Dec. 1 BY MICHAEL RICCI SUN NEWSPAPERS Not everyone looks forward to winter and its snow, but the members of one recreational club in Lakeville can’t wait for the snow to fall. The official state snowmobile season begins Thursday, Dec. 1, and the Lakeville Sno Trackers snowmobile club’s members will soon be grooming many miles of trails within the city’s limits and beyond. The group of all volunteers maintains all the trails and signage to meet state grant requirements, as well as distributing public information and performing snowmobile safety training, school programs and other club activities. The recreational snowmobiling group has been around for more than 40 years, according to club Vice President Mike McGinnis. “We have been in existence since 1969,” McGinnis said. “We still have some of the original

Yoga helps disabled LV man change his life
Mind Body Solutions founder and president Matthew Sanford leads Lakeville resident Kevin Bjorklund through a series of adaptive yoga poses. Bjorklund, who has been paralyzed from the waist down since the age of 3, has found renewed spirit through yoga classes with Sanford at the Minnetonka-based nonprofit.
Appears in instructional DVD for disabled yoga participants BY MICHAEL RICCI SUN NEWSPAPERS Paralysis can be much more devastating to one’s life than most people realize, but one Lakeville man found his outlet to reach – and feel – beyond his physical limitations. Resident Kevin Bjorklund was involved in a farm accident at the young age of 3 that resulted in his being paralyzed from the waist down. For years Bjorklund felt as though the emotional and mental challenges were at times overwhelming. But Bjorklund has a new outlook on life, for which he credits Matthew Sanford – a disabled man who specializes in yoga, paralysis and disability. Sanford is the founder and president of Mind Body Solutions in Minnetonka, a nonprofit whose mission is to transform trauma, lass and disability into hope and poten-

EDUCATION Chemistry experiment puts Metcalf Junior High School on the map Students in Stephanie Jones’ science class put their school on the world map – the Global Water Experiment Map. As part of the International Year of Chemistry 2011 through the United Nations, Jones’ students at Metcalf Junior High School, 2250 Diffley Road, Burnsville, measured acidity and other properties of the water in the Mississippi River near Fort Snelling in St. Paul and posted the results to the IYC global water map. Organizers, including the American Chemical Society, hope this will become the world’s biggest chemistry experiment ever as students, scouts and community groups from nations around the world study their local water sources and post the data to the interactive, global map. Jones will receive a certificate from the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization for her participation in the global experiment and commitment to the goals of
the International Year of Chemistry 2011. The IYC is a worldwide celebration of the achievements of chemistry and its contributions to the wellbeing of humankind, including providing safe drinking water to a thirsty world. Classrooms and community groups may conduct the experiments and add data to the IYC map through December. Info: chemistry2011.org.
Burnsville High School senior earns national recognition Jada Pulley, a senior at Burnsville High School, is among outstanding participants in the National Achievement scholarship program. Pulley scored among the top 3 percent of more than 160,000 black Jada Pulley Americans who requested consideration in the 2012 National Achievement program when they took the 2010 preliminary SAT/National Merit scholarship qualifying test.
The program was initiated in 1964 specifically to honor academically promising black American high school students. A roster of these students that includes names, high schools, and tentative college major choices is being sent to about 1,500 colleges and universities, according to Michelle Robbins, director of educational services for the National Merit Scholarship Corporation. “I love learning,” said Pulley, who also attended Harriet Bishop Elementary and Eagle Ridge Junior High School. Pulley is now applying for colleges, most of them out of state. She hasn’t decided yet what her major will be but it will most likely to be in the humanities area, such as political science or psychology.

Retail outlets prepare for Black Friday Many stores with midnight openings Thanksgiving Day BY MICHAEL RICCI – SUN NEWSPAPERS Retail stores prepare for the day many weeks in advance, and shoppers take notice by getting their spots in lines hours before stores officially open. But this year’s Black Friday shopping experience might offer some relief to shoppers, as many stores throughout the metro area are opening their doors earlier, not in the morning but the night before. According to representatives of three large retail stores in the south metro, Black Friday is not a one-day occurrence. Instead it is an annual event that takes a great deal of time planning and preparing for the masses seeking to purchase the hottest item or items during the holiday season. According to Maggie Horrigan, executive team leader of Target Super Store in Apple Valley, the team at her store begins
as early as June, plannign how store associates can better cater to guests and their needs. Of course, this requires the addition of many employees. “Staffing is one of our main priorities to be able to help the guests,” Horrigan said. She added that the days leading up to Black Friday usually involve a lot of maintenance to ensure that the entire store is clean and presentable for customers. Matt Marquette, operations manager of Best Buy’s Burnsville location, agreed that the entire management staff likes to get a head start with regard to Black Friday, saying that the focus on the holiday begins toward the end of September and the start of October. “That is when we begin our seasonal hiring,” he said. This year, however, Best Buy announced that it would be hiring one-
third of the number of seasonal employees it had in 2010. The thinking behind this, according to Marquette, is the savings in training, running background checks, and simply the employee learning his or her duties. “We would like to keep some of the quality people we have on,” Marquette said of the around 20 new hires at Best Buy in Burnsville. Once the stores complete their interviews, background checks, and training, the focus then changes to preparing for the sale in advance. This often involves some late nights at the stores, according to Marquette. “Most of our managers and supervisors will close that night, so we will be there until about midnight,” he said. “We will be setting up all of our signage.” Marquette added that once all of the signage is set up, he and other members

of management would walk through to ensure the prices are accurate to prevent any unnecessary confusion on the big day. With Best Buy, Horrigan said associates at Target Super Store engage in the same actions. “We double check our signage to make sure it’s accurate,” she said. “It’s built into our daily routine.” But the day of the sale is when the rubber meets the road. Store officials must concern themselves with customer safety due to the large numbers that they expect Black Friday. Sarah Spencer, spokesperson for Walmart, said customer and associate safety is always a top priority for the retail chain. “This holiday season is no exception,” Spencer said. “Store specific plans for all Walmart U.S. locations were developed in consultation with leading … experts in the sports and entertainment industries.” According to Spencer, these plans include the areas of approach and entry into stores, flow throughout the stores BLACK FRIDAY: TO NEXT PAGE

Black Friday FROM PREVIOUS PAGE and around promotional merchandise, and flow through the checkout aisles and away from the stores. Allowing people to be able to shop without feeling unsafe is at the top of Target’s list as well. “Safety is the number one priority,” Horrigan said, adding that Target Super Store in Apple Valley will also be “directing traffic” by controlling the number of people who are allowed entry at one time. From a safety and security standpoint, the extra time to manage entry numbers is for guest and associate safety, according to Horrigan, whose Apple Valley Target Super Store will open midnight Friday, Nov. 25. Marquette said the associates at Best Buy Burnsville would keep an orderly fashion for shoppers outside waiting for the store to open. “We’ll be there at 10 p.m. Thanksgiving night as a management team,” he said. “We are there first and foremost to make sure there is an orderly line.” According to Marquette, he and other associates will have store maps that identify the location of Black
Friday sale items, “which helps a ton because [customers] already know where to go.” “Our asset protection team will be there to help maintain order,” Marquette added. “The rest of the team will be there right at the front to direct people to the hot-ticket items.” Instead of opening the store early in the morning the day of Black Friday, many stores this year are opting to open later in the evening Thanksgiving Day, and Best Buy is among them as the Burnsville location will be opening at midnight, according to Marquette. “It’s us being in line with the rest of the retailers in the area,” Marquette said. “For most consumers, it’s not a stretch to stay up two more hours.” Spencer commented on the feedback she said Walmart has received regarding its time to officially begin its sale. “Our customers told us they’d rather stay up late to shop than wake up early,” she said. “That’s why for the first time Walmart will be kicking off its in-store specials at 10 p.m. Thanksgiving Day.” With the early openings by many retailers in the south metro area, Marquette feels that this year will be a big one. “We are expecting this midnight release to be bigger than it has ever been,” he said.

Celebrate thanks and giving this month Or lessons I learned from kindergarteners
KATIE MINTZ Edina Community Editor
BY KATIE MINTZ – SUN NEWSPAPERS It just might be true that you learn all you really need to know in kindergarten. I recently visited a group of preschool and kindergarten students to ask them what they are thankful for this year. I thought I’d come away with some silly answers for this Thanksgiving Day column. And I did, but I also learned that Thanksgiving is lot more to
young kids than drawing handprint turkeys, eating pumpkin pie and giving thanks. Introducing me to her class, Rita Miller, a teacher at Step By Step Montessori of Southdale in Edina, said she considers November a month of both thanks and giving. “It’s a good month to think about what we’re thankful for and also to give to those don’t
have what we have,” she told her students. Rather than ask them what they are thankful for, maybe I should have asked how they are giving to others. Based on what School Director Rachel Hagenson told me, they would have had a lot to say. The 150 students at Step by Step, from infants to kindergarteners, are currently collecting toys for Volunteers Enlisted to Assist People, which serves families in Bloomington, Richfield, Edina, and south Minneapolis. Hagenson said the highlight of the annual drive is seeing children so excited to part with their presents.
Later this winter, the school, which has seven other metro locations, will put together birthday bags for the organization. Twice a month, the kindergartners also visit a nearby senior living facility to share their school lessons and play games with the residents. “It’s nice to teach kids about generosity and giving at this time of year, and it’s never too early to start teaching kids how fortunate we are and that not everyone is as fortunate,” said Hagenson, who noted that caring for the community is an important part of Montessori educaMINTZ: TO NEXT PAGE
Guilty until proven innocent … oh wait Now that alleged child molester and former defensive coordinator for Penn State University, Jerry Sandusky, is talking, this “mess” as I like to call it is just getting started. The allegations of child molestation again him, which if true, are completely vile and disgusting. Knowing that everyone who is not a child molester has the same blood-boiling views on child molestation, I will spare the commentary on how I feel

about him and anyone else who has committed such sickening deeds. Need an argument for the death penalty? Perfect example. However, for argumentative purposes this whole thing has
brought up a point that I think is for the most part lost on us. And I think it’s only becoming worse. Again, I must state that I am in no way defending what is alleged or Sandusky himself, but a concept that we have built our justice system on and around. What happened to “innocent until proven guilty?” It now seems the motto has shifted to “guilty until proven innocent.”
I’ll be the first to say, I am in fact guilty of forgetting that notion from time to time. As soon as I heard the news, I too was utterly disgusted and had a thought or two of what I’d do to him if given the opportunity. However, let’s take a step back to before Sandusky (stupidly) began talking, only to make himself look like more of an ass than he already does.
sure to it. Inhaling wood smoke is not just an annoyance; it is a danger to our health. While recreational fires might be fun for a few, many people prefer to enjoy their properties smoke-free. The smoke in our neighborhoods prevents people from turning off their costly energy-consuming air conditioners, opening up their windows and enjoying the fresh cool evening air. You have probably encouraged your children and grand-
children not to smoke tobacco. But every time you smell the smoke from a backyard campfire you (and they) are smoking. Just as with tobacco smoke, there is no safe level of wood smoke. Portable gas and propane fire pits spare the air and are cool, state-of-the art additions to backyard living spaces. For many of us, the fire is not delightful. Barbara Johnson Burnsville

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Recreational fires are not ‘delightful’ To the editor: The article, “South metro fire chiefs discuss recreational fires” (Oct. 27, 2011), was a discussion of the legalities surrounding backyard recreational fires. But south metro citizens should also know that the smoke from a recreational fire
is a toxic stew of carbon monoxide, formaldehyde, sulfur dioxide, lead and other gases that can scar your lungs. The smoke is full of fine particulates that can get deep into your lungs and into your blood stream. Wood smoke is dangerous to children, the elderly, people with asthma and other respiratory diseases, and people with cardiovascular disease. Wood smoke can cause a stroke or even death after a short expo-

Dillmann FROM PREVIOUS PAGE Once the news broke, heads started to roll at Penn State, all the way up the scale to the university president. From not only the actions taken, but to the actions that were supposedly not taken, people’s lives were turned upside down. As a fellow member of the media, taking something so eart- shattering, especially to such a pinnacle of football program such as Penn State’s, it can become easy to take it and run with it. With the Internet and social media sites becoming an easier and much faster way to obtain information, this has started opening the door at a far greater number of incidents of having false information

sent out to millions of people instantly. Yet, nobody stopped to ask the questions of what actually took place? Also, what about the victims? Yeah, they were mentioned here and there, but the focus was on the sacred football program of Penn State, and the idolized coach. The fervor of the media creates such passion and emotion in people that information is left out along the way. For instance, knowing that Joe Paterno’s name will get more hits and reads on a website, they strayed away from the real point and failed to do their due diligence just to stir the pot. Regardless, he did deserve his fate because it should have gone to the police instantly when reports surfaced. This is certainly not the first, and most certainly won’t be the last case of something that takes the nation by storm just
because of the names associated with the crimes (anybody remember O.J.)? Guilty until proven innocent doesn’t end with Sandusky. Mike McQueary, the then 28-year-old graduate assistant who witnessed the “acts,” has received death threats because it was initially reported he didn’t do enough to stop Sandusky. When in fact it now he did do more than what was first reported. Whoops. Yet, that just shows how we as a society need to jump on a bandwagon of some cause before all the facts are fully known. Had I written this column a few days prior, it could have even been argued whether Sandusky actually even did anything wrong. Yet, with his admittance of showering with the young boys, though nothing criminal happened makes him already guilty in my mind. I
can now form my decision because I’m hearing it directly from the source. Whether any sexual acts did take place, you don’t shower with young boys regardless. The idiot should have just kept his mouth shut, but now all bets are off. Saying nothing criminal took place in my mind is false because what he admitted doing alone is a degree of sexual assault. This, as said before, is only the beginning. Knowing there will be much more information that is sure to come out, I based this column on a concept. And that to sum things up – know your facts. Once the proper research is done, then start forming conclusions. But to get all worked up over information that is heard at the drop of a hat is wrong. It’s so easy to let emotion override what truly is the truth.

A Lakeville youth has found a more suitable means of receiving a high school education, but he is also the first to acknowledge the concept is not for everyone. Cory Aksteter is a senior at Insight School of Minnesota, an online school governed by the Brooklyn Center School District. He opted for the online school for its flexibility and freedom. He even feels attending online has increased an existing sense of responsibility. He isn’t alone. The Minnesota Department of Education reported nearly 8,300 full-time students in 2009-10 opted for an online education, which represents a 43 percent increase from 2008-09. And both full- and part-time course enrollments increased by 47 percent from nearly 59,000 to nearly 86,500 in the same time period. Cory had been a student at Lakeville North High School until his junior year, when he received information about online schooling. This made him and his parents think about the option. Beginning his junior year, he was no longer a student at LNHS but rather of Insight, which for him provides many benefits. “You can do your homework on your own time, and you can get ahead if you want,” Cory said. “I work a lot right now, and there are just things I’m needed at home for to help out with.” Cory continued to say that at Insight all work is done online, except for testing. For these, Insight officials obtain use of space at a hotel, and students arrive to take their exams. Though the bulk of an Insight student’s work is done online, students do engage with others in their virtual classrooms. “The class connect sessions are with other students at the same time,” he said. “But the course work, that’s on your own time. Other students do it at different times.” Susan Brott, communications director for Independent School District 197, the governing body for students in Mendota Heights, West St. Paul and Eagan, said it is not uncommon for students to do work at different times of the day. “Not every kid is at their peak at 10 a.m. in the morning,” she said. “Some kids peak at 10 p.m. It is a different model of learning.” John Huber, Insight’s head of school,
said that approximately 5 percent of students do their schoolwork in the middle of the night, based on log in times. “Some students feel like they are morning people,” Huber said. “Some students work overnight and go to school in the late afternoon and into the evening.” But with this comes a need for responsibility, according to Cory, who referenced comments from his peers about the school. “There are a lot of students who like it and are able to keep up with everything,” he said. “And I really think it depends on responsibility. Cory said some of his peers were not too thrilled with their online experience, referencing a Facebook page created by some peers where comments were made about not being able to complete assignments and failing classes. “It’s not really that hard,” he said. “I think these students have a real hard time with responsibility, especially since it is very independent. I think it is good for some people and not really good for others.” He added that success really depends on how much one can be independent and responsible. Brott, who said that she was speaking for ISD 197 based not on her opinion but instead what she has heard surrounding the issue of online learning, said it is all about choice and that it depends on the student. She elaborated more about what officials in ISD 197 have said about online advantages and disadvantages. Brott cited social interaction as being one of the main arguments against an online high school education. “Some people are concerned that if they go completely to an online format in terms of that they might not have the opportunity to participate in other experiences that comprise a high school experience,” she said, adding that those experiences include athletics, arts, and other clubs and extra-curricular activities. Insight does offer some activities that are on par with traditional brick and mortar schools, such as prom and other events during the school year, said Huber. Dr. Randy Clegg, Burnsville-EaganSavage Independent School District 191 superintendent, had the opportunity to interview online students while consulting for another school district. Clegg said that choose online schooling as an option for many reasons. “It runs a wide gamut,” Clegg said. “It runs from issues at home. They don’t feel ONLINE SCHOOL: TO NEXT PAGE

Online school FROM PREVIOUS PAGE like they fit into the school environment. They have a difficult time sitting still for 48 minutes … six times a day. And some have jobs that prevent them from being in a traditional school setting 8-4 and need to do their school work at night.” He continued by referencing what he feels are disadvantages to online learning. “There are some disadvantages with some of the current online programming in that it’s heavily text based,” he said. “Students … say that’s a tough piece. If you’re not a good reader or somebody who likes to read, or somebody who has enough self-discipline to stick to it, then it can be a tough hurdle to overcome.” Clegg also touched on the lack of socialization. “For some that is okay, but for many others, that is something they miss,” he said. “Online learning where students are taking all their academics offsite, online, while it has its uses, it may not be the best fir for all students. On the other hand, Brott did comment on advantages of online learning. “I think it is also a skill in learning how to communicate and engage online,” she said. “There are a lot of employment situations where those are going to be impor-
tant skills.” She added that alternative forms of high school offer some students who perhaps were not too successful in a traditional setting a second chance to earning a diploma. Clegg did say, however, that online learning could be a useful tool for students in situations that would otherwise make it more difficult to attend traditional high school. “I can think of some good applications where you may have a student struggling at home with a variety of mental health issues, physical issues,” Clegg said. “They could be laid up for a serious surgery. It can be an invaluable tool for that student to keep making progress academically in their current situation, or a student that is homebound for any other reason.” Huber, however, said that the school currently has around 300 students enrolled, and the majority of those are fulltime. He added that the school’s quarter system also provides an advantage for students. “We are on a blocked quarter system,” he said, adding that each quarter a student takes three classes, half as many as students in traditional schools, but the classes are moving faster than semester classes. “What we find is that students appreciate having fewer courses to concentrate and dive deeper into … for a nine-week period.”

Huber also said he believes the online concept has a future and that Insight’s numbers will grow in time. “Some students come to us because they feel they are not safe in their traditional setting,” he said. “What we hear most often is that they want to get away from the ‘drama’ of a high school.” Aside from all he believes are advantages to online learning, specifically at Insight, Huber did say it was another option for students to explore. “The curriculum is set up as partially self-paced and partially teacher led,” he said. “This is an option for students. Some students feel the need for individualization.”

Yoga FROM PAGE 1A tial by awakening the connection existing between mind and body. According to Bjorklund, his first time attending Sanford’s yoga class was enough to sell him on the mind-body connection. “It blew my mind,” Bjorklund said of his first yoga class. “When I talk about feeling my whole body, it is different than how I experience my upper body - the part of me that is not affected by paralysis. It is a more subtle, ‘inside’ sensation, but it is very real. And once it is experienced, for me, I was hooked and have been practicing ever since.” Mind Body Solutions created an entirely different way of teaching yoga as well as mind-body awareness to people living with trauma loss and disability, said Sanford. “It’s not that we just teach people how to do yoga,” Sanford said. “We teach them how to be more present and live more vibrantly in their bodies. We use yoga as a vehicle for that.” Beyond the physical sensation of feeling “whole” as a person, Bjorklund has found that his experience with Sanford and yoga has provided him with a means by which he lives his life daily. “It introduced my mind and my self to a whole new set of possibilities,” Bjorklund
said. “That my life-long experience of disconnectedness was only limited by my belief set, and had really no basis in truth.” Sanford founded Mind Body Solutions in 2002 for the purpose of helping others reach goals similar to Bjorklund. He expounded on the premise of his adaptive yoga, which differs from traditional yoga through the emphasis of principles. “There are a lot of yoga poses that people with physical limitations aren’t able to do,” Sanford said. “What we do is we teach the principles and the sensations. It is learning to move gracefully through your body with more balance and more control.” Sanford, who in addition to being the founder of Mind Body Solutions, is also a public speaker, author, and now the creator of a DVD titled “Beyond Disability: A Yoga Practice with Matthew Sanford.” The DVD allows anyone with a disability to practice along with him. Bjorklund also stars in the instructional video aimed at helping others. The DVD is available on Amazon. “I have been involved in Matt’s organization for some time, doing some speaking on behalf of Mind Body Solutions, and sharing my experience whenever I am asked and able,” he said. “In the DVD we are presenting a series of poses designed to give the viewer a taste of what is possible through some very simple, accessible, yet very powerful yoga poses.”

New Burnsville business offers alternative for divorcing couples Service addresses financial implications BY MICHAEL RICCI – SUN NEWSPAPERS The financial ramifications associated with divorce could be enough to frighten anyone going through such an ordeal, but help is now in Burnsville for those dealing with these realities. Divorce Financial Directions, 1500 McAndrews Road, Ste. 232, Burnsville, officially opened its doors this past August. The owner, Terryl Johnson, earned her designation as a Certified Divorce Financial Analyst in July in preparation for opening her Burnsvillebased service. A CDFA is a member of the Institute for Divorce Financial Analysts, specializing in the financial issues that come with divorce. A CDFA’s role includes acting as an adviser to one party’s divorce lawyer, or as a mediator for both. According to Johnson, she is the only fully dedicated CDFA in the metro area, and the rest are financial advisers as well but do CDFA business on the side. “When I found out about the CDFA designation, then I decided that was some-
thing that I wanted to do,” Johnson said, adding that CDFAs use their knowledge of tax laws, distribution of assets, and both short- and long-term financial planning to reach equitable settlements. Attorneys have been handling such issues for many, many years with regard to the distribution of assets and spousal support, but the difference, according to Johnson, is that most state statutes are “pretty fuzzy” when it comes to spousal support. It is for this reason that Johnson said CDFAs are needed. Unlike child support, where a clear calculation exists, the issue of spousal support brings with it much confusion, namely with long-term projections. “You plug in all of these numbers, and the calculator spits out the child support,” she said. “That is an exact math problem.” But with spousal support, Minnesota’s statute guidelines are based on the needs of one party.
“It’s based on the perceived lifestyle that a party has had, the ability for them to maintain that lifestyle on their own, and the bigger piece of course is the ability for the other person to be able to pay,” she said. There are no guidelines or forms of calculation generally used to determine equitable settlements, said Johnson, leaving much of the decision making up to attorneys and even judges. “[Attorneys] tend to look at the assets of the two parties and inevitably 50-50 sounds fair depending on the length of the marriage,” Johnson said. As a means of addressing such issues, individuals also use mediation, but Johnson said even when mediation is used, the need for a CDFA still exists. “In the mediation process, I also had clients referred to me from mediators,” she said. “I work with them and the mediator, just the financial process.” Johnson’s way of addressing the issues of spousal support and asset distribution,
‘[Attorneys] tend to look at the assets of the two parties and inevitably 50-50 sounds fair depending on the length of the marriage.’
however, takes long-term factors, among others, into account when making such lifelong and important decisions. “I have software as a CDFA that projects out asset division, including their budgets and taxes, and projects… an assumed spousal support amount for 20 years,” she said. “That’s the really telling part, and that’s where attorneys really like it.” Johnson went on to say that the 50-50 split may sound fair in the beginning, but when all factors are weighed and considered, the outcome after 20 years could be inequitable. “When you put it into the model where it projects out 20 years, and includes taxes, all of a sudden you have… a big disparity in income,” she said. Johnson said her services could be used before, during or after divorce proceedings have begun, even with mediators and attorneys involved. She has her first couple coming to see her to deal with their divorce, without mediators and attorneys. The bottom line, she said, is that divorces and the financial issues that follow should not be handled alone or without proper assistance. “It’s a very emotional time, and it is when they are making serious decisions with no ‘do over’s,’” Johnson said. “This is it.”

members with us.” But the trails in the city are not restricted to the group. They are open to anyone wishing to participate in one of the state’s largest recreational industries. “Lakeville has always offered to continue and maintain the opportunity to snowmobile in a variety of ways,” said Steve Michaud, Lakeville parks and recreation director. Before the beginning of each season, the Sno Trackers educate youths about the sport before they can traverse the miles of trails available. Law requires certification for residents born after Dec. 31, 1976. “[The Sno Trackers] have certified instructors that spend five nights educating youth,” McGinnis said. “It’s a DNR course that we teach at McGuire [Middle School] once a year. We had 75 kids in it this year.” According to McGinnis, the aspiring riders are required to attend eight hours of classroom instruction and then are judged on their skills with a driving test. This year the Sno Trackers conducted its classroom teaching the last week of October and the first week of November, with the driving test to be held Dec. 1. When the conditions are ready – when snow falls – Sno Tracker members work on approximately 10 miles of trails in the city and another 45 outside of Lakeville city limits. Three main park and ride locations provide the group and other riders with access. “The club maintains 55 miles. Most of these are outside of the [city] boundaries,” the club’s vice president said. “There are 22,000 miles of snowmobile trails in Minnesota. We are responsible for 55 of them.” According to McGinnis, club members worked just shy of 400 hours last year preparing trails for use. This includes grooming, placing informational signs at points on the trails, and even fixing small bridges. Using a snowcat tractor, club members go to work preparing the trails for the snowmobile-riding season. “It takes all the bumps out of snow and all of the drifts, and it just makes snowmobiling safer,” McGinnis said. “We have many trail captains in our club, and each captain is responsible for a certain portion of trail. They go out and mark the trails – stop ahead, stop sign, danger, turn right,
turn left.” McGinnis added the rest of the club’s members, in order to maintain trails, have to build bridges across creeks, which are in need of repair annually. “We’re going on our third Saturday of bridge repair, brushing back trees, trail reroutes, so there is a lot of time involved with the club in that area,” he said. According to Michaud, all of the work performed by the club allows individuals to transport their snowmobiles, if they can’t access trails from their homes, to trail links that connect with trails in nearby cities. “That allows people to get on to trail links that pretty much … allow you to ride south, west, and east to your heart’s content,” Michaud said. McGinnis said other clubs maintain the trail extensions. These include clubs based in Farmington, Waterford, and Prior Lake, as well as Lonsdale, which is an exception. “The Farmington Sno Tigers is one that we go back and forth with quite a bit, and you have the Waterford Warriors down in Waterford, and then Scott County has a couple out of Prior Lake, and of course Lonsdale is a partner of us,” McGinnis said. “We groom for the Lonsdale trail, which puts us up…around 75 miles that we groom.” The city continues to be very proactive with the local club, according to McGinnis. He said his group works closely with officials to ensure safe and fun recreation for his estimation of 3,000 riders in Lakeville. Michaud and club President Mark Weber recently signed and sent a letter to snowmobilers in Lakeville advising each of city ordinances. It also underscores the importance of the “no snowmobiling” zone, which accounts for the northern third of the city limits east of I-35. This cooperation, however, fills a need and provides city residents with access to at least on winter activity. “What it brings to the city of Lakeville is it brings snowmobiling,” McGinnis said. “Scott County has the highest per capita snowmobiles in the state. Dakota County is probably second or third.” McGinnis added that he enjoys the sport so much that he honestly feels it makes the winter pass more quickly. “My kids play hockey, and we snowmobile,” he said. “We have enough weekends already figured out. Before we know it, it will be March 1.” The club is always looking for new members to join in their social activities in connection with snowmobiling in the city and overnight stays elsewhere in the state. Info: 952-985-5184.

PUBLIC SAFETY Lakeville Nov. 7 to Nov. 13 fire report From Nov. 7 to Nov. 13, the Lakeville Fire Department responded to seven calls for service: one medical, one gas leak, three false alarms and two good intents. Fire Prevention Tip During the holiday season, the LFD is encouraging safety with regard to candles. Below are tips to ensure a safe holiday season: - Keep burning candles within sight. - Extinguish all candles before you go to bed, leave the room, or leave the house.
Criminal ignores warning, arrested A few weeks ago, Lakeville police officer Adam Stier was in the area of a local restaurant bar at closing time and was flagged down by the manager. The manager told Stier that an individual was being hostile and trying to start a fight with other patrons as the individual was leaving the bar. Stier identified the subject and warned him to leave the bar property and to go home. The subject told Stier that he only lived a few blocks away and that he would walk home. Stier watched as the subject walked away, and he told the manager to call if the subject returned. The suspect left the area and then, apparently forgetting what Stier had told him a few minutes before, made the first of a series of poor choices and decided to come back to the bar. He continued to
make bad decisions when he attempted to start a fight with everyone that he came in contact with. He got the attention of the staff at the bar and they called the police. Stier soon returned to the location and arrested the individual for disorderly conduct.

BV man indicted for illegally entering the U.S. A 46-year-old Burnsville man was indicted Nov. 9 in federal court in St. Paul for entering the United States illegally after being previously deported as a criminal, according to the U.S. District Attorney’s Office. Gerardo Jimenez-Sanchez was specifically charged with one count of unlawful reentry after removal. The indictment alleges that Jimenez-Sanchez was found in the U.S. illegally Oct. 13 after having been deported to Mexico. His deportation followed a 1997 California conviction for possession of cocaine. The current federal indictment resulted from an Oct. 13 arrest for having two Minnesota driver’s licenses. According to a law enforcement affidavit filed in the case, Jimenez-Sanchez was identified by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s Homeland Security Investigations as a person who applied for and received multiple Minnesota state driver’s licenses under different names. If convicted, Jimenez-Sanchez faces a potential maximum penalty of 10 years in prison. All sentences will be determined by a federal district court judge. JimenezSanchez remains in custody.

Heating Advice Q. How often should I change my furnace filter? A: Nothing is more critical to the life, efficiency and capacity of your furnace and air conditioner than replacing your filter regularly. How regularly they need to be changed will depend on the size, quality and home factors. Standard 1” filters should be changed monthly. Pleated 4” filters need to be changed every 3-6 months. If you have pets or kids in the home, burn a lot of candles, or leave your furnace fan set to on you may need to change them more frequently.

Dental Advice Q: Do adults really need fluoride treatments? A: Yes, absolutely, and here is why. Americans are living longer than ever before so it‘s imperative that they keep their natural teeth as long as possible. As we age, adults experience more problems with gumline recession and are at a greater risk for root decay. In addition, older adults tend to experience decreased salivary flow due to the use of medications or medical conditions. Inadequate saliva flow places an individual in the high risk category for decay. Because of these factors fluoride is an essential piece of adult dental care. Fluoride causes a re-mineralization process in tooth enamel, meaning that fluoride actually strengthens tooth enamel. Applying a topical fluoride into an adult's mouth during the initial formation of decay can not only stop the decay process, but also prevent future decay! So the answer is YES, all adults should have a fluoride treatment at their routine dental visits.

EDUCATION BES school district voters approve levy
Why Live with Chronic Ankle Pain? You are invited to attend a FREE Seminar on Ankle Pain and the Latest Treatment Options
Burnsville-Eagan-Savage School District 191 voters approved the renewal of an existing levy by a wide margin Nov. 8. The levy, which was originally approved in 2002, received 68 percent support from voters. It provides the district with $845 per pupil in revenue, amounting to approximately $10 million annually. Supt. Randy Clegg said the results of the referendum reflected the support residents have shown for local schools over recent years. “I’m not surprised that residents showed this kind of support for education in this community but I am extremely grateful,” Clegg said. “Although we will still face cuts in the future because state funding has not kept up with inflation, this local support means we can continue to focus on providing excellent education to our students and doing it in a fiscally responsible manner.” The final vote total of 4,280 “yes” votes to 2,046 “no” votes reflected the support shown in a community survey conducted during the summer. The survey of 400 homes showed 84 percent of residents supported or strongly supported the levy
renewal. In addition, residents gave the district high marks for performance in the survey, with 78 percent of respondents agreeing that the community receives a good value from its investment in District 191 schools. Planning for the next two budget years can now begin in earnest and will include a process for gathering feedback and ideas from community residents and employees. Info: isd191.org.
