Resale clothing store resonating with women shoppers For one Burnsville business, it has become fun and trendy to shop resale instead of retail. Karla Fitzpatrick, owner of Clothes Mentor, 14629 County Road 11, became a franchisee of in December 2009, and since that time, she said she has seen notable growth in sales at a time when many other women’s retail stores are struggling or going out of business entirely. According to Chad Olson, president of the Ohio-based women’s apparel resale chain, in 2009 franchise stores that had been open for a year had a comparative store increase of 28.9 percent. And in 2010, that figure, albeit lower than the previous year, remained in the black with a 7 percent increase in
sales. In the case of Fitzpatrick’s location, she said the trend has been the same. “Business has been steadily growing since I opened up the door. Every month is better than my last,” she said. “Career

Independent School District 191 and its local teachers’ union have averted one hot-button issue, but more issues are still up for negotiation. During the district’s regular Board of Education meeting Tuesday, Oct. 11, Superintendent Dr. Lisa Snyder read a statement indicating that the school district and the teachers’ union agreed to allow teachers to write letters of recommendation for students for their college applications. The issue became urgent for both sides in the days leading up to the meeting, a result of many e-mails and phone calls to the district and union by individuals expressing their concerns over the decision to not write the letters. Futbol club moves to Lakeville from Farmington Site to meet needs of growing soccer popularity BY MICHAEL RICCI – SUN NEWSPAPERS

Whether you prefer futbol or soccer, it doesn’t matter. The president of a soccer club hopes to kick off a new chapter in the club’s existence with a very recent move. The South Metro Futbol Club, formerly known as Farmington Club Soccer, moved to a new Lakeville location Oct. 1. The club, 21034 Heron Way, moved to meet its own growing needs, according to Ken McGlauchlen, president of the SMFC. Prior to the club’s move, its activities were very limited in time, according to McGlauchlen, who said they used to have to rent space at the Irish Dome in Rosemount. But it was only 90 minutes per week. “It made sense to rent space that the club could use whenever it needed to use it,” he said. “It’s ours 24/7.” Though the club maintains its Farmington identity by virtue of the black and orange colors and the hard
to miss Tiger logo, the club president said it is open to children in all south metro communities, which was part of why the club changed its name July 1. The new site features 6,000 square feet of space, with 4,000 of that being turf. McGlauchlen, however, said it has much more to offer. “We have and education room, a large meeting room, and a large lobby for parents. It’s set up very user friendly,” he said. “It’s set up to be a clubhouse type environment.” According to McGlauchlen, the 4,000 square feet of turf is mainly for training, and it’s not set up for 11-on11 play. “It really is made to learn skills,” he said, adding that the club is providing young players 4-18 years of age the opportunity to move forward in their respective levels of play. McGlauchlen said the facility will be home for players of all levels not only to train and practice their skills but also as a represented home of those who compete throughout the metro area against other clubs in the south district of the Minnesota Youth FUTBOL: TO NEXT PAGE

Soccer Association. He expects kids to use the new facility one or two times per week to train. It will also be used for soccer camps. “They will come in as teams and work together as teams,” he said. “We have a coaching development director. He is the only paid person. All the others are volunteers.” According to McGlauchlen, his understanding is that the SMFC is the only club in the south metro to have its own indoor training facility, a big plus when you consider the growing popularity of the sport in the area. SMFC Player and Coaching Development Director Ron Carter has been involved in the sport for nearly 30 years. He played high school soccer for Rosemount High School, and then he went on to play on the college level at the University of Southern Mississippi in Hattiesburg, Miss. After college, he started Soccer
Blast, an indoor facility in Burnsville, and was co-owner of the Minnesota Thunder, which is a professional soccer team. For the past 15 years, Carter has focused his attention on coaching and training. Carter said the number of children involved in soccer in past 15 years has “exploded.” He attributed much of this growth in interest to the success of the U.S. women’s soccer team, which has influenced many. “I would say that seven out of every 10 players that play soccer are females,” he said. He went on to say that the popularity of the sport is exploding in every south metro community, even smaller, rural towns. Carter also owns a company called Edge Soccer Academy that is run out of the SMFC. “I run training programs from ages 4-17,” Carter said, adding that the training with the older students is at a college level to push the children in their skill development. “But in the same breath, I want them to have a great time,” he said.

Classroom supplies worth $1,000 were presented to four teachers in BurnsvilleEagan-Savage School District 191 during surprise visits from OfficeMax employees as part of the company’s annual “A Day Made Better” event Oct. 4-5. Recipients were Nia Knudsen, a thirdgrade teacher at Hidden Valley Elementary; Karen Otremba, a secondgrade teacher at Sioux Trail Elementary; Patty Norgaard, a first-grade teacher at Sky Oaks Elementary; and Molly Lynch, a special education teacher at Gideon Pond. The teachers were nominated by their principals for the donations based on their passion, dedication and innovation in the classroom. They were among 1,000 teachers across the nation selected to receive classroom supplies such as digital cameras, markers, paper, a swivel chair, and more. Should we ticket high-rolling CURRENT speeders like Switzerland? Burnsville • Lakeville
In the Community, With the Community, For the Community
In honor of Andy Rooney recently signing off of “60 Minutes” for the last time, I’m going to make a few curmudgeon observations of my own. He’s a little more seasoned than I am, so bear with me while I clasp my hands over my desk and calmly sound off. Do you ever notice there seem to be a lot of drivers who can afford to speed? Or, maybe they just don’t get pulled over. Either way, they can risk getting a speeding ticket. Whenever I’m driving, on Highway 169 especially, those who speed past me are driving nice, expensive cars. Sure, I try to keep pace with traffic and I teeter over the speed limit like anyone else, but when I get passed, it’s by a car nicer than mine. That’s not difficult, though. I drive a 10-year-old Mazda. The parade of high school students who pulled out of the city hall parking lot after a recent city council meeting they had attended for a civics class had nicer cars than I ever had. Maybe their parents owned

them. Maybe not. Regardless, money buys the fast lane, it seems. The simple equation is expensive cars means the driver has a padded income, therefore a $145 speeding ticket is not a big deal. Maybe the guy who flies by me in a Cadillac took on too much debt and is running from repo men. I know everyone in a nice car doesn’t have mountains of money or even a little bit of expendable income. But, when they’re passing you going 80 in a 65, you don’t want to give them the benefit of the doubt. It wouldn’t help my Mazda’s fledgling ego. (Thanks, faulty intake manifold gasket, whatever you are.) Should we have a tiered ticketing system like Switzerland? The Swiss fine their speeders based on how fast they were going – and their income.
Last year, that law led to one Swede facing a $960,000 speeding ticket after taking his 570horsepower Mazda for a 180 mph joyride. Allegedly, of course. Here in the United States and Minnesota, Democrats would probably like the ranked ticketing system. It’d be a redistribution of road rage. Republicans would call for a flat ticket fine. Or maybe no speeding limit at all. Get off the road, Uncle Sam – you shouldn’t be driving at this age, anyway. Knowing nothing about the interact budget aspects of public safety and department of motor vehicle cash flow, here’s my pipe dream: Minnesota could get rid of the tiered fees for license-plate tabs – which is based on the price of the car. That could be flat fee, which would probably be cheaper for many people. But, we should determine speeding ticket fines based on three things: how fast the driver is going, the average miles-pergallon the vehicle gets and the cost of the car. If you have an expensive gas-
guzzler and you get caught going 100 mph, a portion of the ticket would go to state as usual, and the rest would go into an investment fund that would help finance future nuclear power plants. Like it or not, we’re going to run out of oil sooner than you’d like to think, and that’s going to throw a wrench in just about everything we do here in the suburbs. Since alternative energy is in its infancy, I’m guessing nuclear power will play a huge role in saving our ridiculously convenient lifestyle. I mean, a piece of uranium the size of a golf ball (some have estimated as small as half the size of a ping pong ball) is enough to meet one person’s energy needs for a lifetime. That’s for everything. Car, jetfuel and toaster. If you search “golf ball uranium” online, you’ll find some sources. Consume at your own digression. Anyway, that’s a whole different column. For now, please, take it easy on the road is all I’m really saying. I’ll try to do the same.

Confessions of a Heartburn Victim DOCTORS AGREE — a recent clinical study proves AloeCure® instantly makes heartburn, acid-reflux, constipation, gas, bloating, diarrhea and other stomach nightmares virtually VANISH!
By Ralph Burns; “Former” acid reflux sufferer
(Photo by Michael Ricci – Sun Newspapers)
Here’s My Story: I've Suffered With Acid Reflux for Almost 40 Years Now. Unless you experience it; you can’t imagine how horrible it is. Every time I ate spicy foods I would get what I called "ROT GUT". Like something was rotting in my stomach. But now I can eat anything... No matter how spicy. Even if I never could before. Let me explain… For the better part of my life; I purposely avoided a lot of foods. Especially ones with even a tiny bit of seasoning. Because if I didn't, I’d experience a burning sensation through my esophagus— like somebody poured hot lead or battery acid down my throat. Add to that, those disgusting "mini-throw ups" and I was in "indigestion hell".
What was I gonna do? Keep taking the pills, or suffer with problems that could ultimately be my demise”.
Resale FROM PAGE 1 Fitzpatrick pays cash on the spot for inventory, so customers do not have to wait for their items to sell before they get paid. Moreover, Fitzpatrick is proud of the look of her store, which she said is starkly different from the stereotype of consignment and resale stores. Fitzpatrick said her store is not a dimly lit, musty and messy store. Instead, she said it is often mistaken for an ordinary retail store. At the same time, it is not the high-end boutique where some women might feel uncomfortable shopping. “We are a new kind of resale store,” Fitzpatrick said. “We focus on the better brands. They need to be current, within two years of purchase.” According to Fitzpatrick, her store carries all brands and all sizes, with the exception of junior sizes, at prices that are one-third of what one would pay at a retail store. Women who are 25-54 years of age are her target demographic. Sharon Bjordal used to be a regular customer of Clothes Mentor, until she became an employee. She said she began shopping at the store about 18 months ago after hearing about the store. Like many others, Bjordal said she
wasn’t sure what to expect before first shopping at the store. “I had heard about the store on the radio and through a couple of friends, but when I cam in, everything was neat and in order, unlike some resale stores,” she said. “It was very easy to find what you were looking for.” Bjordal said these reasons were what made her keep coming back, especially the prices. “Women always want to look fabulous, but they also want a fabulous price,” she said. “What you get for the money is what is remarkable.” Fitzpatrick, who had been in the women’s retail business since 1989, began looking for franchise opportunities in women’s apparel at the right time. “In the way the economy was turning, it was apparent that there was a need for this type of clothing store,” she said. Barb McHenry of Burnsville is a regular customer of Clothes Mentor who recognized the benefit of shopping resale instead of retail. “My oldest daughter is in her second year of college,” she said. “With her expenses, the economy and gas prices the way they are, it’s comforting to know I can still look awesome and chic with my purchases at Clothes Mentor and still have money left over and the end of the month for other family expenses.”
Doctors put me on all sorts of antacid remedies. But nothing worked. Or if they did, it would only be for a brief period. And then boom! My nightmare would return. Sometimes, I felt like I was dying. The pain was unbearable and nothing could make it stop. But then my wife, who occasionally suffered with the same problem; gave me one of her prescription acid blockers. It was a miracle. I felt like I could live again. Because before that, I was just miserable. I wanted to kill myself. But thankfully, it worked, and worked well. I felt great, until about one year ago; when I read an FDA warning that scared the heck out of me. It went something like this… FDA WARNING! Using proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) on a long term basis, increases your risk of hip, bone and spinal fractures. That's a particular concern to me, since many acid blockers are PPI's. I've gone through two back surgeries and bilateral hip replacements. I had to ask myself, could PPI's have been responsible for my medical woes? After all...
“The Recommended Treatment for Prilosec®, Prevacid® and Other PPI's is Only 14-DAYS, I Took Them for 14 YEARS!” I was “between a rock and a hard place”. Stop using the PPIs and I'm a “dead man in the water”. It would be unbearable. I wouldn't be able to eat anything. I’d have to go on a water diet. But that FDA warning was scary. I knew I had to stop or else risk developing spinal stenosis. My mother had that. And I watched her die a horrible death. Her spine just fractured. It was the worst death. She didn't deserve that. And neither do I. I had to quit. So I stopped taking PPI's for a day or so. But my indigestion was worse than ever. I would rather take the chance of a spinal fracture than to live like that again. I tried everything. Even started using home remedies like Apple cider vinegar. But it just felt like I was pouring even more acid down my throat.
63 year old Ralph Burns enjoying a spicy-hot portion of Lobster Fra Diavolo. Just 15 minutes after taking AloeCure® I used to get what I called ‘Rot Gut’, like my stomach's rotting out!”
Then one day at dinner, a friend of mine said "why don't you try an aloe drink?" I said "aloe drink"? Jeez. That doesn't sound good at all!” The next day he brought me a case of something called AloeCure®. I was skeptical, but I was desperate! So instead of being an ingrate I decided to try it. I was shocked! AloeCure® tasted pretty good too. It has a pleasant grape flavor that I actually enjoy drinking. I decided to experiment. I stopped taking the PPI's altogether and replaced it with a daily diet of AloeCure®. Then something remarkable happened… NOTHING! Not even the slightest hint of indigestion. And here’s the best part. The next day we had Italian food — my worst enemy. But for the first time in 40 years I didn't get indigestion without relying on prescription or OTC pills and tablets. Finally, I just didn’t need them anymore! I was so thrilled; I wrote the AloeCure® company to tell them how amazing their product is. They thanked me, and asked me to tell my story... The story that changed my life. I said “Sure, but only if you send me a hefty supply of AloeCure®. I just can't live without it." But don't believe me. You have to try this stuff for yourself. I recommend AloeCure® to anyone who suffers with the same problem I did. It gives you immediate relief. You'll be grateful you did. I sure am. Education Minnesota Lakeville, sent an email to district employees outlining union actions during the contract negotiations. In the e-mail, Sinner said members will “no longer write letters of recommendation, work on non-paid clubs, etc.” Although efforts were made to expedite letter writing before negotiations began, not all kids were able to obtain the letters they needed. “A lot of students did get their letters through September, but as always, you’re never going to reach everybody,” Sinner said. But as of Oct. 11, the two sides had reached an agreement to allow the letters, this after much negotiation. “Through a collaborative effort this morning, the district and the union came to an agreement of how we are going to provide letters of recommendation for students,” Sinner said minutes prior to the meeting. “We were on the phone working back and forth together to find something that allowed the time for teachers to get this done.” But Sinner emphasized what he felt was a burden on teachers, referencing class sizes, workloads and other classroom preparation, as well as activities outside the classroom such as chaperoning or helping at district events. In a phone interview Oct. 11, hours before the meeting, Dr. Snyder acknowledged that the agreement had been struck and said an announcement would be made during the meeting later that evening. Dr. Snyder also commented on the status of the negotiations. “We’re moving forward quite assertively,” she said. But at about the time Sinner had initially sent the e-mail outlining union member actions, Dr. Snyder responded with a podcast statement to employees. “I can tell you that the activities you are UNION: TO NEXT PAGE No Motels, No Hype Just Honest Pricing Everyday !

Union FROM PREVIOUS PAGE about to embark on simply do not work. In my opinion, they are old ideas that use fear and actually have the opposite impact that you intend,” she said. “I speak from experience when I tell you that the message will be perceived negatively by board members and many community members….” Snyder’s comments were not limited to the union’s initial decision to not have teachers writing recommendation letters as it addressed all actions as a whole, including a decision for all teachers to wear the same yellow, long-sleeved Tshirts as a sign of solidarity. In Sinner’s e-mail, he wrote, “Shirts to be worn Oct. 3, 11, and 25th.” In a parenthetical statement that followed, Sinner wrote, “If asked by students why all the teachers are wearing our yellow shirts, a simple and honest response could be, ‘We are united for students and want to do what is best for you.’”
One district resident who attended the meeting and spoke during a brief public comment period, took objection to the union’s actions. Randy Pronschinske, a resident of Lakeville and a parent of a sophomore student. “They are using our students as a bargaining chip with our board, and I just don’t think that’s right,” he said. With the letter issue now resolved, the union, according to Sinner, will continue to function as one. “At this point we’re walking in at the beginning of the days and out toward the days on a normal eight-hour contract day, which is what we’re contracted for,” Sinner said, adding that the union hadn’t prevented its teachers from taking work home. The grading is still getting done, according to Sinner. “Nothing in the classroom will suffer at all,” he said. Sinner, without getting into specifics, said that at this point in the negotiations, the two sides have been talking a lot about workload and time, leaving the issues of wages and benefits yet to be discussed.

Burnsville Fire aims to extinguish apartment conflagrations Department awarded grant through FEMA BY MICHAEL RICCI – SUN NEWSPAPERS Members of the Burnsville Fire Department have taken a proactive approach to prevent or at least greatly reduce fires at multi-housing apartments. Firefighter Andy Hamline was one of a few members of the department who wrote the grant application to the Federal Emergency Management Agency, citing the vulnerabilities that the funds would be used to address. FEMA officials took notice by awarding the BFD a $47,000 grant. The application was submitted in February, and the department learned it had been awarded the funds in May. According to Burnsville Fire Chief B.J. Jungmann, FEMA officials look at each grant application received and question the vulnerabilities identified in assessing whether or not to award grants. “They are looking to see how to best use the grant money,” the chief said. Hamline said that the number of vulnerabilities was alarming and there were huge percentages in certain areas. “We found that 27 percent of our fire-
fighter injuries were related to multihousing fires,” Hamline said. “[About] one in four injuries were related to multi-housing, and that’s a very high number.” Hamline added since 2003, the BFD has had 16 firefighter injuries. Citing another statistic, Hamline said that 100 percent of fatalities were in relation to multihousing, adding that the total number of fatalities was five. Hamline said five might seem as though it’s a low number, but it depends on how it’s viewed. “If you look at that on an annual basis, the state only has about 32 deaths annually,” he said. “Usually that’s about the average. “That’s … almost a death a year in a state where we only have about 32 a year.” Another statistic Hamline found was that 44 percent of civilian injuries overall were a result from cooking or smoking. For these reasons, including a fire at Raven Hills apartments in Burnsville
earlier this year, were what prompted Hamline to apply for the grant. “We noticed that within the past five years or so that we’ve been having a lot more apartment fires,” Hamline said. “We felt we were responsible to do something about it.” According to Jungmann, the city is home to about 7,500 multi-units total, adding that a studio or a one-ortwo bedroom apartment constitutes a unit. He said the biggest problem with the total number of multi-housing apartments were their age and the lack of fire suppression equipment as a result. “We discovered that 65 percent of all the apartment buildings, or multi-housing residences, lacked sprinkler systems,” Hamline said. “They lack the sprinkler systems because they are older. Seventy percent of the buildings are over 20 years old.” Hamline said this fact is a reason for concern, which is why the department
‘We noticed that within the past five years or so that we’ve been having a lot more apartment fires. We felt we were responsible to do something about it.’
took steps to address the issue as a whole. “We’re focusing on any facility that has five or more units in one building,” Jungmann said. The department’s efforts will include the purchase of fire suppressors known as Stove Top Fire Stop, a canister occupants can place magnetically to their stoves. In the event of a fire, or a high flame, the canister will automatically release a suppressant powder. Each of the units at Raven Hills apartments will receive one, according to Jungmann. He added, however, that there were not enough for every unit in each of the city’s apartments, but the department will provide apartment managers with information about how to obtain these canisters. The chief went on to say that everyone in a multi-family dwelling with five or more units in one building would receive a DVD featuring a 10-15 minute educational video about fire prevention, which will be available in four languages. The department will also be distributing small, cigarette butt canisters that are non-combustible. Jungmann said these are small, hand-held devices an individual can use to properly dispose of cigarettes.

PUBIC SAFETY Lakeville criminal doesn’t get exactly what he came for Lakeville Police officers were dispatched to a grocery store shoplifting theft in progress. The theft involved a suspect attempting to steal merchandise, including lobster tails and expensive steaks. The suspect was not attempting to be very discreet in his theft as he was blatantly wheeling an entire shopping cart of merchandise out the front doors of the store. Just as the suspect was coming out of the store, an LPD officer in a marked squad pulled into the lot. The suspect
began running away from the squad, toward his car that was parked in the lot. Unfortunately for the suspect, as he arrived at his parked car, he ran right into LPD officers Jason Haider and Thor Howe, who were in plain clothes. The two officers, who had already been observing the suspect as he exited the store, identified themselves as police officers. They quickly arrested the suspect and took him into custody. The suspect was charged with theft, possession of drug paraphernalia and for driving to the store without a valid driver’s license. The store loss prevention staff told the officers that they suspected that this individual had stolen merchandise from the store before.

Honor Flights pay tribute to World War II veterans ‘We can’t all be heroes. Some of us have to stand on the curb and clap as they go by.’ – Will Rogers BY SUE WEBBER • SUN NEWSPAPERS Larry Martin enlisted in the U.S. Navy nine days after he turned 17, and he served for three years, nine months and 20 days – from April 18, 1944 to Feb. 7, 1948. Sixty-three years after his discharge — on Oct. 8, 2011 – Martin was in a group of 100 World War II veterans who faced throngs of people in two cities cheering the service they gave to their country. The group of metro area World War II veterans was chosen for a one-day, whirlwind Honor Flight to Washington, D.C., to view the World War II Memorial and other monuments. For vets leaving Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport on a charter flight Oct. 8, it was a day of laughter and tears, a time to connect with other veterans and to be honored. “It was wonderful, very impressive,” said Martin, 84, a resident of Golden Valley. “It’s a day I’ll never forget.” Honor Flight was inaugurated in May 2005 and since then has transported an estimated 50,000 veterans from across the
U.S. to Washington, D.C., for a day, free of charge. The nonprofit organization now has 96 hubs in 40 states. As of July 2011, Honor Flight Twin Cities has taken 500 metro area World War II men and women veterans to the nation’s capital. Veterans are invited to apply for the Honor Flights. Martin was on the list for two years before he was notified last spring that he had been selected. “The people were by far the most impressive part of the day,” Martin said. “When we landed in Washington, there were 100 to 150 people there to meet us, thanking us for saving our country. When we came back home that night, there were another 100 to 150 people at the Twin Cities Airport clapping and cheering us on.” Sixty-two guardians, each of whom paid $500 to accompany the veterans on the trip, were on the chartered Sun Country flight that day. Larry Martin and Wally Fuller, 84, of White Bear Lake, were escorted by Fuller’s daughter Jan Smallidge. “Larry helped me push my dad’s wheelchair that day,” said Smallidge, a Circle Pines resident and licensed social worker at Life Fountain Home Health Care. Fuller was on the USS California in the Battle of the South Pacific Ocean and in
Japan after the war ended. Martin was on the USS President Adams APA 19 and the USS Hooper, stationed in the Pacific Ocean. He was involved in the invasion of the Lingoyan Gulf and others. After boarding the flight about 5 a.m., the vets were served coffee and rolls and later sandwiches and beverages. A box lunch was served at noon, and then a buffet dinner in the evening, before the flight back to the Twin Cities. When the vets arrived in D.C., a ground crew that volunteered to be their tour guides was waiting to escort them to festive red, white and blue shuttle buses that were well stocked with refreshments. Then it was full speed ahead to the tour. Highlights included the playing of “Taps” at the World War II Memorial, and a wreath ceremony at the Minnesota Pillar. On the return trip, the group sang the hymns of their various branches of the service. The flight touched down in the Twin Cities about 11 p.m. and was greeted by ROTC students and military personnel, a band, coffee and cookies. Along with the military people saluting the veterans as they deplaned in the Twin Cities were family members and friends that the vets didn’t know would be on hand for the return trip.
Anne Janda of Bloomington, campus director of Village Shores senior community in Richfield, was another of the guardians on the Oct. 8 flight. It was her third trip on an Honor Flight. “It was just great,” she said. “I keep applying to be a guardian. Every time I get home, I make another application. It’s incredible. It’s so well organized, just as smooth as it can be. The camaraderie is delightful. The veterans start off the trip not knowing each other, and it turns out to be just delightful to be in their company.” Veterans who make the trip are told not to bring a thing. The Veterans Administration supplies wheelchairs and oxygen; a doctor and several nurses are aboard the flight. Each flight also has a videographer who takes photos of the group and the memorials and later provides a DVD and CD for each veteran. Janda said she also enjoys hearing the veterans’ stories during the 20-hour excursions. “I just cannot say enough about the Honor Flights,” Janda said. “It’s a great history lesson. It’s a great human lesson. It’s the most humbling thing I’ve ever done. It’s an honor to be involved.” Jerry and Jana Kyser of Roseville are directors of Honor Flight Twin Cities. Burnsville girls win 2 in a row in soccer playoffs
Eagan pitches shutout against turnoverplagued Blaze BY MIKE SHAUGHNESSY – SUN NEWSPAPERS
Blaze makes section final; Lakeville North girls advance BY MIKE SHAUGHNESSY – SUN NEWSPAPERS Moments after Burnsville secured a spot in the Section 2AA girls soccer championship game, coach John Soderholm gathered the team for a chat. After Soderholm said his piece, he turned over the floor to senior captain Bailly Drayton. “I just want to say I’m proud of everybody,” Drayton said, “and I’m happy we finally got past the second round of sections.” Burnsville hasn’t been to a state tournament in 15 years, and recently it’s been tough for the Blaze to go far in a section loaded with strong programs such as Eden Prairie, Edina and Bloomington Jefferson. “It’s the first time we’ve gotten past the second round since I’ve been playing [varsity] in ninth grade,” said Drayton, who plays forward for the Blaze. After defeating Bloomington Kennedy and Prior Lake in its first two section games, the Blaze (14-4) played Edina (10-3-5) in the final at home Oct. 18, after this edition went to press. The winner advances to the state Class AA quarterfinals next week. Edina was a convincing 3-0 winner over Eden Prairie in its semifinal game Oct. 15. SOCCER: TO NEXT PAGE

When a play that appears destined to become a train wreck instead is turned into a first down, that’s a good indication it’s going to be your night. And so it was for Eagan, which had little go wrong in a 31-0 victory over Burnsville in South Suburban Conference football Oct. 14. Wildcats coach Rick Sutton said it was his team’s most complete game of the season. But back to the second quarter for a moment. The Wildcats, already leading 210, faced second and 21 at their 30-yard line. Quarterback Drew Bauer rolled out to his right, then spun around to throw a screen pass to tight end Eric Woodcock. Trouble was, Woodcock had company – three Burnsville defenders who had the play sniffed out. “No, no, don’t do it!” pleaded someone on the Eagan sideline as Bauer released the ball. The throw somehow made its way to Woodcock, who took off upfield, dragging Burnsville players along the way, for a 22yard gain and a first down. Eagan might have been fortunate on that play, but generally the Wildcats were sharp. “We’ve had games where our offense was better and we’ve had games where our defense was better,” Sutton said, “but if you look at executing all three phases, this was by far our best game.” Burnsville (2-5) had been playing better lately, but the Blaze lost starting quarterback Dan Motl when he suffered a lacerated kidney in an Oct. 7 victory at Eastview. He is unlikely to play again this season. The Blaze tried two quarterbacks but was held to 161 yards. Burnsville didn’t complete a pass and committed four FOOTBALL: TO PAGE 26

Soccer FROM PREVIOUS PAGE Meanwhile, Burnsville defeated Prior Lake 2-0 behind two goals by sophomore forward Alyssa Blahnik, who has 29 for the season. On both of her goals against Prior Lake, Blahnik was able to finish when a loose ball came to her in front of the net. Drayton assisted on the second goal, driving to the net and taking a shot that the Prior Lake goalkeeper blocked. The deflection went directly to Blahnik, who put it away. Blahnik also scored three goals in Burnsville’s 4-0 first-round section victory over Bloomington Kennedy. Burnsville is one of four South Suburban Conference teams to play for section championships. No. 1-ranked Lakeville North reached the Section 1AA title game, and Eagan and Eastview played for the Section 3AA championship Oct. 18. Burnsville, which finished third in the SSC, is a blend of experience (seven seniors) and youth (five sophomores and a ninth-grader). Several of the younger players are coming off successful club seasons that carried over to high school; Blahnik and Abby Soderholm, both sophomores, are first and third on the team in scoring. “I didn’t know how good we were going to be,” Drayton said following the Blaze’s section semifinal victory over Prior Lake. “I was actually pretty surprised. I knew we were going to be a

young team, but now I know we have a chance to go a long way.” The Blaze still needed one more victory over a strong opponent to go to the state tournament for the first time since 1996. Drayton was asked if she knew what she would tell her teammates before the Edina game. “I don’t know,” she said. “I’m not that good at speeches. It’s going to have to be something good, though.”

LV North girls reach final Lakeville North, the No. 1-ranked girls team in Class AA, reached the Section 1AA championship game. The Panthers (16-0-2) played Northfield in the section final Oct. 18, after this edition went to press. Lakeville North breezed past Rochester Mayo 3-0 and Owatonna 5-0 in its first two Section 1AA games. Northfield (12-4-2) reached the final after defeating No. 2 seed Lakeville South 2-1 in a semifinal game Oct. 15. Lakeville South, the defending Section 1AA champion, finished 11-5-2. Northfield and Rochester Mayo played for the boys section championship as the top two seeds, Lakeville North and Lakeville South, fell in the semifinal round. Northfield scored in the second half to upset No. 1-seeded Lakeville North 10 on Oct. 15. The Panthers, who were 70-2 in their first nine games, finished 96-2. Lakeville South finished 6-10-2 after losing to Rochester Mayo 3-0 at home in the semifinal round.

Notebook: favorites win at SSC cross country meet BY MIKE SHAUGHNESSY – SUN NEWSPAPERS Sports polls often are ridiculed when they turn out to be wrong, and often ignored when they turn out to be right. The state high school cross country coaches association, however, nailed it when it came to the South Suburban Conference. The league’s highest-ranked teams and individuals all won at the conference meet Oct. 14 at Eagan High School. Rosemount and Lakeville South, both ranked No. 2 in Class AA, won the boys and girls team championships. Burnsville senior Cole O’Brien, ranked second individually in Class AA, was the boys medalist. Girls medalist was Eagan junior Danielle Anderson, who is ranked third in the state. Lakeville South’s girls remained undefeated in 2011, winning the South Suburban team championship by 32 points over third-ranked Eagan. Ninth-grader Kaytlyn Larson, ninth-
grader Annie Brekken and senior Megan Kilbride finished second, fifth and ninth to lead the Cougars to the team championship. Sophomores Megan Lubow and Erin Kilbride were 11th and 12th. Eagan’s Anderson won the girls 4K race in 14:30.3, about four seconds faster than Larson. Ninth-graders Anna Van Wyk (eighth) and Kelli Praska (15th) also finished in the top 20 for Eagan. Burnsville sophomore Vivian Hett finished third and Lakeville North junior Taylor Perkins was fourth. Rosemount’s first five runners finished in the top 13 as the Irish boys won by 23 points over second-place Eastview. Burnsville was third, followed by Lakeville North and Lakeville South. Senior Nathan Rock (sixth), junior Trevor Capra (ninth), senior Chandler Dye (10th), senior Calvin Lehn (11th) and senior Nick Couillard (13th) counted toward Rosemount’s team score. Senior Tyler Blume (18th) and ninth-grader Sam
Ivanecky (22nd) also competed. The Irish’s first- and seventh-place runners were less than 45 seconds apart. O’Brien ran the 5K boys race in 16 minutes, 4.7 seconds, almost six seconds faster than runner-up Jan Ketterson of Bloomington Jefferson. Eagan’s Sidney Speir, Lakeville North’s Ben Saxton and Eastview’s Nick Oelke completed the top five. Ninth-grader Faysol Mamoud and senior Abdullahi Salan were seventh and eighth for Burnsville. Burnsville and Apple Valley will go to the Section 3AA meet Wednesday, Oct. 26, at the University of Minnesota Les Bolstad Golf Course. Lakeville North and Lakeville South will run in the Section 1AA meet Thursday, Oct. 27, in Owatonna.
South spikers are No. 1 Lakeville South was the beneficiary of Blaine’s two losses at the Eastview Invitational volleyball tournament last
weekend. Even though the Cougars didn’t play in the Eastview tourney, they moved to No. 1 in the state Class 3A rankings for the first time in school history. Blaine, last week’s No. 1 team, lost its first two matches of the season at Eastview. Lakeville South improved to 23-1 with a four-set victory over Eastview on Oct. 11. The Cougars closed the regular season at second-ranked Eagan on Oct. 18, after this edition went to press. If South beats Eagan, the teams would tie for the South Suburban Conference title. Eagan would win the SSC outright with a victory over Lakeville South. Both Lakeville teams have been No. 1 in the state Class 3A rankings this season. Lakeville North started the season in the top spot and returned there for two weeks in September before losing to Blaine at the Eagle Invitational in Apple NOTEBOOK: TO NEXT PAGE

Football FROM PAGE 24 turnovers, including three in the game’s first 13 minutes. “The thing is, this group has gotten better every single day – until tonight,” Burnsville coach Tyler Krebs said. “We’d been doing some good things, but tonight we laid an egg.” Burnsville lost a fumble at midfield on the game’s first possession. Eagan nose tackle Mitch Johnson pounced on the loose ball, and seven plays later the Wildcats had a 7-0 lead on Bauer’s 18-yard touchdown run. The Blaze’s second possession also was short-circuited by a fumble, which Eagan’s Grant Matthews recovered. Eagan couldn’t turn that chance into points, missing a 27-yard field goal attempt. Eagan intercepted a pass at the Burnsville 45 early in the second quarter, and moments later Bauer scored on a 15yard run. About two minutes later the Wildcats had the ball again and Michael Busch raced 38 yards for a touchdown after catching a screen pass from Bauer. Burnsville had a chance to turn it around in the third quarter when Michael Callanan returned an interception 72 yards to the Eagan 12. Bauer, who threw the interception, ran down Callanan to prevent a touchdown. The Blaze came away with no points when Johnson pulled down quarterback Will Reger for a 6-yard loss on fourth down. In addition to keeping Burnsville out of the end zone, Eagan’s defense scored a touchdown in the fourth quarter. A botched handoff resulted in the ball landing at the feet of linebacker Calvin Lamb, who went 25 yards untouched for a score. Eagan kicker Colin Byers added a 29yard field goal. Bauer rushed for 93 yards and two scores. He completed nine of 22 passes for 161 yards and one touchdown. Busch rushed for 116 yards on 14 carries and caught five passes for 79 yards and one score. Sophomore running back Ben Sherman gained 73 yards to lead Burnsville’s offense.
Notebook FROM PREVIOUS PAGE Valley. Lakeville North went into this week 21-5 overall and ranked fifth in Class 3A. Lakeville South’s only loss was in a five-set match at Lakeville North on Sept. 15. Cougars senior McKell Anderson leads the team in kills (219) and digs (244).

Eagan (3-4) tried to finish the regular season at .500 when it played at Rosemount on Oct. 19, after this edition went to press. More importantly, the Wildcats will try to put the pieces in place for a playoff run. They play in Class 5A, Section 4, where third-ranked Cretin-Derham Hall is expected to be the top seed. Eagan has given the Raiders difficult games in the section playoffs the last two seasons. “In a couple of the games we lost, if we had played as well as we did tonight, we would have had an opportunity to win,” Sutton said. “We’ll just try to keep improving.” Burnsville still had an opportunity to clinch home field in the first round of the Class 5A, Section 3 playoffs, which start Tuesday, Oct. 25. Rosemount and Prior Lake, both 5-2 going into the Wednesday night games, are fighting for the top seed in that section, but the other five teams were either 2-5 or 1-6. The Blaze played host to suddenly struggling Lakeville South on Wednesday. The Cougars started 5-0 but had lost their last two games by a combined 58-12.

LV North 35, Kennedy 7 Lakeville North clinched at least a share of the South Suburban Conference championship by drubbing Bloomington Kennedy Oct. 14. The conference title is the Panthers’ first since 2003, when Lakeville still had one high school and belonged to the Lake Conference. Lakeville South shared a Lake Conference title in 2006. To win the championship outright, North (7-0 overall, 6-0 SSC) needed to win at Prior Lake (5-2, 5-1) on Oct. 19. A Prior Lake victory would make the Panthers and Lakers co-champions. Lakeville North quarterback Trey Heid continued his strong 2011 season by shredding the Kennedy defense. He threw four touchdown passes and ran for one score. Charlie Hayes caught touchdown passes of 79 and 24 yards. Ben Blake had a 5yard touchdown reception and Joel Oxton caught a 32-yard pass for a score. Heid added a 36-yard touchdown run. By the time he was done with the Kennedy defense, the Panthers were up 35-0 and cruising toward their seventh consecutive victory. The Class 5A, Section 1 quarterfinals
will be Tuesday, Oct. 25. Because the section has seven teams, the No. 1 seed will receive a bye in the quarterfinals. Either Lakeville North or Owatonna – both 7-0 going into the final week of the regular season – will get the No. 1 seed. How quickly can fortunes change in high school football? Consider the case of Lakeville South, which two weeks ago was undefeated and ranked fourth in Class 5A. Then came two losses during which South was outscored by a combined 58-12. That left the Cougars (5-2) trying to right the ship going into their final regular-season game at Burnsville on Oct. 19. Prior Lake kept its hopes for a South Suburban Conference championship alive with its victory at Lakeville South. The Lakers needed to beat Lakeville North on Oct. 19 to gain a share of the league championship. The loss ended South’s chances of winning the SSC. The Cougars will open the Class 5A, Section 1 playoffs Tuesday, Oct.
Junior running back Dom McDewStauffer ran for two scores as the Eagles won for the first time this season. McDew-Stauffer put Apple Valley in front in the first quarter with a 5-yard run. The extra-point attempt failed, as did Jefferson’s when the Jaguars tied the game in the second quarter. From there, it was Apple Valley’s game. Tommy Singer threw a 3-yard touchdown pass to Mitch Hechsel as the Eagles went to the locker room with a 13-6 halftime lead. McDew-Stauffer (12 yards) and Garrett Ganskie (2 yards) had touchdown runs in the third quarter. Apple Valley and Jefferson both are 1-6. The Eagles tried to improve their position in the Class 3A, Section 3 seedings when they played Bloomington Kennedy on Oct. 19, after this edition went to press. The Section 3 quarterfinals will be Tuesday, Oct. 25.
Monica Turner had 206 kills and Allie Mosser has made 221 digs. Junior setter Jazzmyn Tingelhoff has 635 assists.
fourth. Prior Lake won a spot in the state Class AA True Team meet that took place Oct. 19 at the University of Minnesota. Top swimmers for Lakeville North included sophomore Alena Bodnaruk, who won the 200-yard freestyle in 1 minute, 56.65 seconds and the 500 freestyle in 5:15.17. Erin Kleiner, a junior, won the 100 butterfly in 1:00.83. North also won two relays, with Julia Bodnaruk, Brenna Smith, Kleiner and Alena Bodnaruk swimming the 200
freestyle in 1:42.37 and the 400 freestyle in 3:42.14. Lakeville South eighth-grader Brianna Alexander won the 200 individual medley in 2:13.86. Apple Valley senior Katherine Wright was one of the top swimmers at the Section 2AA meet. She won two individual events (50 freestyle, 100 backstroke) and teamed with Delaney McDonald, Rachel Grubb and Stephanie Bierman to win the 200 medley relay.
True Team swimming Neither Lakeville team was able to advance through Section 2AA to the state girls True Team swimming and diving meet. Prior Lake finished first at the Section 2AA meet Oct. 15, while Lakeville North and Lakeville South finished third and

By: Ali Holman, co-owner of www.coreconditioningtraining.com I think we can all agree that eating is fun. Not only is it a way for us to socialize, reward ourselves and comfort ourselves, it also is the one area of fitness where people have the most trouble. Wouldn’t it be great to know that the choices you make are actually helping your fitness program? More importantly, wouldn’t it be even better to banish the word “diet” from your vocabulary? Chances are, if you are embarking on a “diet”, it will have a beginning and an end. The end is usually followed by slowly going back to old habits and ends you right back where you started. With our clients, we really encourage them to focus on a Lifestyle Change with room for “cheat meals” and realistic goals; which inevitably lead to lifelong results and without the emotional roller coaster of a diet.
Core/Conditioning Training’s List of “Fat Burning Foods”
eggs
low-fat dairy
Eggs are high in protein and low in calories. You may have heard all the warnings about eggs and your health: opt for eggwhites for the low-cholesterol, fatburning effect. Eggs also contain the vitamin B-12, a great supplement for breaking down fat cells.
Studies show that women who eat low-fat dairy products (such as non-fat yogurt and low-fat milk) three to four times a day lost 70 percent more fat than low-dairy dieters.
beans
oatmeal
Beans are one of the best sources of protein, fiber and iron. Some of the best beans to ear are: • Navy Beans • White Beans • Kidney Beans • Lima Beans
Oatmeal is loaded with soluble fiber, which helps reduce blood cholesterol by flushing those bad digestive acids out of your system. Skip the flavored oatmeals - you lose out on all the health benefits. If you must sweeten your oatmeal, do so by adding fruit.
olive oil
lean meats
Certain fats are good for you, and your body needs them. Olive oil is one of those “good fats.” It helps you burn fat and keeps your cholesterol down. One ounce of extra virgin olive oil contains about 85% of the daily value for monosaturated fat.
Search for lean meats - chicken (baked, broiled, grilled), fish and turkey - which are all high in protein. It is a good rule of thumb to consume at least one half-gram protein per pound of body weight each day. A chicken breast gets you well on your way, with about 22 grams of protein.
whole grains
interval training
Our body needs carbohydrates, despite what the fad diets tell you. Avoid processed carbohydrates such as white breads, bagles, pastas and white rice and look for whole grains that have not been processed and contain the fiber and minerals your body needs.
Interval training is defined as short, repeated bouts of intense exercise with minimal rest. You can burn major calories and get an all-over workout in less than 30 minutes. When you see people who are “cut,” chances ar they are partaking in interval training.

Planning ahead for long-term care N
o one wants to think about a time when they might need long-term care. So planning ahead for this possibility often gets put off. Most people first learn about longterm care when they or a loved one need care. Then their options are often limited by lack of information, the immediate need for services, and insufficient resources to pay for preferred services. Planning ahead allows you to have more control over your future. Planning ahead for long-term care is important because there is a good chance you will need some long-term care services if you live beyond the age of 65. About 70 percent of people over age 65 require some services, and the likelihood of needing care increases as you age.
Planning ahead helps you understand what service options are available in your community, what special conditions may apply for receiving services, for example, age or other eligibility criteria, what services cost, and what payment options – public and private – apply. Having this information helps ensure you will have a range of options when you need long-term care, and makes it more likely that you will have more choice and control over where and how you receive services. Planning ahead is important because the cost of long-term care services often exceeds what the average person can pay from income and other resources. By planning ahead, you may be able to save your assets and income for uses other than long-term care, including preserv-

ing the quality of life for your spouse or other loved ones. With planning, there is a greater likelihood of being able to leave an estate to your heirs, because you are less likely to use up your financial resources paying for care. Planning ahead also means less emotional and financial stress on you and your family. It can provide a way to involve your family in decisions without depending on them to bear the entire burden alone. Finally, for many people, one of the most important advantages of planning ahead is to ensure greater independence should you need care. Your choices for receiving care outside of a facility and being able to stay at home or receive services in the community for as long as possible are greater if you have planned ahead.
Why people don’t plan ahead There are many reasons why people don’t plan ahead for long-term care. These include the natural tendency to avoid thinking about becoming dependent on others for your care, misinformation about the risks of needing care, and
lack of knowledge about the cost of care and payment options. Most people don’t like to think about getting older, developing a disability, becoming less independent, or needing help with personal care. Many people don’t realize that their chance of needing long-term care by the time they turn 65 is as high as 70 percent. People commonly misunderstand how expensive long-term care is, and how it is paid for. Consumer surveys have shown that many individuals don’t realize that health insurance, Medicare, and/or disability coverage do not pay for most long-term care services. Medicaid pays for some long-term care services, but only if you qualify for the program because you have limited income and financial resources. Some people find it too difficult to raise these subjects with their loved ones, making it difficult to explore and define their plans. Adult children often feel like they are patronizing their parents if they raise the subject or they are Long-term care continues next page
Where can you buy long-term care insurance? Where do you go when you want to buy long-term care insurance? INSURANCE SPECIALIST: Most people buy long-term care insurance directly from an insurance agent, financial planner, or broker. States regulate which companies can sell long-term care insurance and the products that they can sell. There are more than 100 companies offering long-term care insurance nationally, but 15 to 20 insurers sell most policies. The best way to find out which insurance companies offer long-term care coverage in your state is to contact your state’s Department of Insurance. EMPLOYER: Many private and public employers, including the federal government and a growing number of state governments, offer group long-term care programs as a voluntary benefit. Employers do not typically contribute to the premium cost (as they do with health insurance), but they often negotiate a favorable group rate. If you are currently employed, it may be easier to qualify for long-term care insurance through your employer than it is to purchase a policy on your own. Check with your benefit or pensions office to see if your employer offers longterm care insurance. - Information from the National Clearinghouse for Long Term Care Information, longtermcare.gov

Open season change for Medicare D prescription drug plans By Rhonda Whitenack and Jim Czechowicz, Social Security Public Affairs office in Minneapolis and St Paul Medicare beneficiaries who are considering changes to their Medicare Part D plan should mark their calendars now. The “open season” this year will run from October 15 to December 7. (This is a change from last year when the open season was November 15 to December 31.) The Medicare Part D prescription drug program is available to all Medicare beneficiaries to help with the costs of medications. Joining a Medicare prescription drug plan is voluntary, and participants pay an additional monthly premium for the coverage.
While all Medicare beneficiaries can participate in the prescription drug program, some people with limited income and resources also are eligible for “Extra Help” to pay for monthly premiums, annual deductibles, and prescription co-payments. The Extra Help is worth about $4,000 a year. To figure out whether you are eligible for the Extra Help, Social Security needs to know your income and the value of any savings, investments, and real estate (other than the home you live in). To qualify, you must be receiving Medicare and have: • Income not over $16,335 for an individual or $22,065 for a married couple living together. Even if your annual
income is higher, you still may be able to get some help with monthly premiums, annual deductibles, and prescription copayments. Some examples where your income may be higher include if you or your spouse: -Support other family members who live with you; -Have earnings from work; or -Live in Alaska or Hawaii •Resources not over $12,640 for an individual or $25,260 for a married couple living together. Resources include such things as bank accounts, stocks, and bonds. We do not count your house or car as resources. You can complete an easy-to-use online application for Extra Help at
www.socialsecurity.gov. Go to the Medicare tab on the top of the page. Then go to “Apply For Extra Help With Medicare Prescription Plan Costs.” To apply for the Extra Help by phone or have an application mailed to you, call Social Security at 1-800-772-1213 (TTY 1-800-325-0778) and ask for the Application for Extra Help with Medicare Prescription Drug Plan Costs (SSA-1020). And if you would like more information about the Medicare Part D Prescription Drug Program itself, visit medicare.gov or call 1-800-MEDICARE (1-800-633-4227; TTY 1-877-486-2048). Financial fraud hits elderly hard By the Minnesota Society of Certified Public Accountants Financial fraud affecting the nation’s elderly population isn’t merely a story you see on the evening news. It’s a growing problem and, statistically, it could happen to you or someone you know. A study by the MetLife Mature Market Institute reveals alarming details: 20 percent of Americans over age 65 have already been the victims of financial fraud, and it costs those victims more than $2.6 billion a year. Sometimes, fraud against the elderly is perpetrated by a stranger, but sometimes, people in a position of trust take advantage of the elderly, too.
Types of fraud We’ve all heard stories of seniors losing their retirement savings through different types of fraud: foreign lotteries, telemarketing schemes, identity theft, Social Security fraud and others. According to estimates by Consumer Action, a consumer education and advocacy group, while seniors 60 and older make up 15 percent of the U.S. population, they account for roughly 30 percent of fraud victims.
Why is our senior population so vulnerable to fraud? Accessibility and isolation: Seniors tend to be home more often, are typically alone, and may be isolated from family and friends. According to anecdotal reports, criminals may be targeting seniors using Internet mapping and personal identification tools. The reports suggest that scammers have improved their ability to locate senior communities and target their residents. Trust: Seniors tend to be more trusting, more easily intimidated and less apt to be rude. People in their 80s and 90s with no experience with scammers are frequently too trusting and believe whatever is said or what they read. They often can’t tell the difference between a scammer’s “come on” offer and official mail. Additionally, their thriftiness may betray them into entering sweepstakes and lotteries with promises of winnings. Assets: Many seniors have a substantial amount of savings used to supplement their retired living.t
Tips to spot and stop fraud With so many different types of
fraud, it can be hard to know what to be on the lookout for. And financial fraud comes disguised in many forms. Maybe someone knocks on your door and offers to seal your drive way, clean your gutters or repair your roof. Or, perhaps a very nice sounding charity is asking for a donation to help underprivileged children. Are these legitimate? Maybe. But, then again, maybe not. How do you know? Here are a few tips to help you and your loved ones identify and avoid fraud: • If it seems too good to be true – it is. The better something sounds, the more likely it is a scam. The first approach by many scammers to seniors is frequently made in the mail with notifications that they have won money or some other valuable prize. If the person who is targeted responds, the criminals obtain the phone number and start calling, especially in the afternoon when they know seniors are napping or just waking up from a nap. From lures of winnings, the criminals progress to threats. They may even find family members’ names on the Internet and threaten a senior’s loved ones. Any offer by mail or over the
phone that promises money or prizes is probably worthless at best or an attempt to lure someone into a costly scam. Don’t respond to them. • Never give out personal information. Whether it’s over the phone, through the mail, or someone you meet face-to-face, never to give out any personal details, especially to anyone you do not know or just met. Make sure the offer is legitimate. No matter what someone is selling, or how legitimate the offer sounds, write down the individual’s contact information and then follow up to make sure you are receiving legitimate information. • Don’t be afraid to say no. It’s OK to say no and simply hang up the phone or close the door. If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is. Take your time when investigating an offer or even a charitable donation. If someone is offering a legitimate product or service, they will have no problem waiting. • Be involved. Be aware. Become familiar. Help your loved one by learning more about their finances. If there is unusual activity in a bank account, you’ll be able to recognize it more quickly.
