Always seeking new volunteers with or without craft skills, the volunteer group Cute as a Button meets the first Saturday of each month 9-11:30 a.m., 1137 Cliff Road, Burnsville. Volunteers handmake clothing and essential items for newborns of families in need. The Cute as a Button group was developed by HandsOn Twin Cities, its parent organization, in the wake of expressed need for volunteers by Bundles of Love, a separate organization with a similar mission. HandsOn Twin Cities then created Cute as a Button, which is a part of HandsOn’s “Impact Now” program to help meet the need. Jon Elbaum has resigned as executive director of the Burnsville Performing Arts Center, according to BPAC’s management group VenuWorks. Elbaum is leaving to become executive director at the Troy Savings Bank Music Hall in Troy, N.Y. Elbaum’s resignation is effective Wednesday, Aug. 31. A nationwide search for a successor with experience in performing arts facility management has begun with an aggressive schedule to have a new director in place by November, according to city officials.

The Lakeville City Council honored Gander Mountain with the “Spotlight on Business” recognition during its Aug. 15 meeting. Gander Mountain representatives Chris Juelich and Billy Hieb were present to accept the award. The Spotlight on Business program is designed to recognize new and existing commercial and industrial businesses in Lakeville. The program is also designed to emphasize, for residents, the important tax and employment benefits that business and industry provide to the community. Gander Mountain recently completed a major remodeling of its Lakeville store and added the latest Gander Mountain Academy concept to the location. BP girl helps Dakota County K-9 obtain protective vest Nearly $2,000 raised in successful effort BY MICHAEL RICCI • SUN NEWSPAPERS Inspired by a true story and another real-life incident, one young girl took action to help a Dakota County Sheriff ’s Office K-9 in obtaining a protective vest. Amelia Foster, a Brooklyn Park sixthgrader, was honored Tuesday, Aug. 16, by members of the Dakota County Board of Commissioners for her efforts in raising nearly $2,000 to help Deputy Matt Schuster obtain a protective vest for his canine partner, Ace. Dakota County Sheriff Dave Bellows and Schuster presented Amelia with a plaque as part of the recognition. Much time after having heard about a Roseville police K-9 that had been stabbed during an incident in Maplewood November 2010, Amelia was reading “Chicken Soup for the Soul” this past April, which told a story about another police dog that received a protective vest.

This was all it took to get her daughter motivated enough to help, according to Julie Foster, Amelia’s mother. “It was Amelia’s idea,” Julie said. “She made all of the phone calls.” Amelia first started with her local police department to see if there was a dog in need of a vest, but unfortunately for the young girl, all of the police dogs in her city had vests. But this did not stop Amelia. The sixth-grader then called Hennepin County to inquire about any needs the sheriff ’s office might have had, but this too was unsuccessful. Still undeterred, Amelia soon learned of a dog in need through family and friends. “Deputy Matt Schuster’s dog, Ace, did not have one,” Foster said, adding that it was very soon after this discovery that Amelia planned her next move – that being a fundraiser via a four-day garage sale. “She made some flyers and went through our neighborhood and told them about it,” Foster said. “She made K-9 VEST: TO PAGE 7

Lakeville police officer honored for recent DUI enforcement Officer Stier among 30 honored at Target Field BY MICHAEL RICCI • SUN NEWSPAPERS The evening may have included a loss for the Twins, but is also provided a victory for one Lakeville police officer. Officer Adam Stier was among more than 30 law enforcement officials and a pair of prosecutors from the Twin Cities metro area honored July 21 for outstanding performance in enforcement and prosecution of impaired drivers. Stier and his fellow honorees were recognized at Target Field prior to the Twins-Tigers game as members of the 2011 DWI Enforcer AllStars. Jack Tiegs, a member of the Minnesota State Patrol, led the pack of police officers, sheriff ’s deputies and other state troopers with 139 arrests for driving while impaired, but Stier was not far behind as he made 118 arrests. Trooper Eric Micek was between Tiegs and Stier with his 120 arrests. The selection to the team is based on the number of arrests officers made the previous year. “Drunk and impaired driving continues to kill and injure hundreds of people

on Minnesota roads each year,” said Donna Berger, acting director of the Department of Public Safety Office of Traffic Safety, in a July 21 press release. “The work of these… officers has prevented countless tragedies.” According to Stier, who has been a member of the Lakeville Police Department for more than three years, he and other officers are trained to look for signs of impairment after stopping motorists suspected of driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs. In fact, Stier has more knowledge in this area than most law enforcement officials. “I have a little bit of extra training than the average officer. I’m a certified drug recognition expert,” Stier said. “Different kinds of drugs will make people do different things.” Stier added that the extra training involved in obtaining expert status allows him as a peace officer to perform more involved tests on suspected individuals to determine what type of drugs on which they may be impaired. The additional knowledge that Stier possesses, however, still applies to alcoholrelated stops and tests. “It’s a lot of the same things we look for,” Stier said, referring to alcohol and

drug impairment. Stier observes drivers suspected of being under the influence of drugs or alcohol for signs of impairment, but these signs can differ depending on what a suspected driver may have ingested. He looks at a driver’s eyes for clues, such as glossiness, redness, and pupils that are either dilated or constricted, as well as one’s demeanor. Citing depressant types of drugs specifically, a category under which alcohol and painkillers fall, Stier said there is one test that is practically foolproof, which involves an officer requesting a suspected impaired driver to follow his or her finger as he or she moves it side to side. “Any involuntary jerking, that’s what the test checks for,” Stier said. “It’s actually one of our better tests because you can’t fake it.” On the other end of the spectrum are individuals who may be on a type of stimulant, such as methamphetamine or cocaine. “A big thing with those is the people’s demeanor, they way they are acting,” Stier said, adding people under the influence of these tend to behave in a paranoid manner and often exhibit jitteriness. According to Stier, a common test to determine if a driver is in fact under the

influence of a stimulant involves time estimation. Because the stimulants alter one’s sense of reality, Stier and other law enforcement officials will ask a suspected impaired driver to close his or her eyes and indicate when they believe 30 seconds have passed. According to Stier, most stop after only a few seconds thinking more time passed. Commenting on the more than 30 law enforcement officials who were recognized prior to the Twins 6-2 loss, Stier said it was impressive to see all of the other officers recognized, as well as seeing Target Field from a player’s perspective – on the field. LPD Chief Tom Vonhof offered his comments on one of his officers, who spent one year serving with the tribal police in the Upper Sioux Community in Granite Falls. “Impaired driving is one of the leading threats to the safety of the motoring public in every community across our country,” Vonhof said. “We are proud of Officer Stier’s outstanding work in keeping our roadways safer through DWI enforcement and pleased that the Minnesota Department of Public Safety has recognized his achievement with selection to the 2011 DWI Enforcement All-Star team,” he said.

Hoping time runs out on obnoxious and intrusive ads Over the past decade or more I have slowly developed a rather strong aversion to basically all forms of advertising, with the exception of those in the print media. You may think I’m just saying this because it happens to be the industry in which I work, but actually this is not true, for they lack what most others unfortunately possess. About 10 or 15 years ago I stopped to fill my car with gas at a very popular station off of 494. As I was standing there, doing nothing like most others, I was startled when I suddenly began hearing a man’s voice. I had no idea where it was coming from. Imagine my surprise when I turned and noticed that a very small monitor was located along the top of the pump airing ads. Now this was a time that preceded my aversion. This began to develop soon after, so I was not too terribly annoyed by this. In fact, part of me even thought it was clever, but not

nearly as clever as the ad boards ever so strategically placed in men’s restrooms almost everywhere. Since then, as time passed and technology improved, these types of ads complemented the major sources – radio, TV and not the Internet – in a non-endearing way. How many times have you had to turn the volume on your TV down during a commercial either because the volume increased itself to catch your attention or the content was absurd? How many times have you searched the radio dial in your car to only hear multiple minutes of “Hey! Sale! Sale!” And nowadays, how much time do you think you spend attempting to close a pop-up ad

when visiting a website, only to accidentally (or not perhaps) be directed to a page trying to sell you the next greatest elixir the world has ever seen? All of these forms possess an amazing ability to annoy you for a host of reasons, these along with other sources of ads in seemingly clever locations via technology. It is reaching a point where it seems they cannot be escaped, like something out of a “B” horror film. These were my thoughts when up popped an ad on my GPS. To date, I believe I have seen ads for a hotel chain, a restaurant and another. No worries, though, as I’m sure it will soon just happen to pop up when I am watching it for the next turn I will need to make. This is not a good idea, especially when you consider distracted driving and the deaths it accounts for each and every year. To those who are responsible for this annoyance, which

The day the war came home It’s been a few months since my previous visit, but last week I found myself driving up to a church I’ve been very familiar with for years. From baptisms to confirmations to weddings — including my own — I’ve often been back to that same church to celebrate numerous joyful and happy occasions with family and friends. This was the first funeral. I cannot and will not claim a close friendship with the departed. To do so would be a disservice to his memory. At best, I can say we were childhood buddies. It was difficult to find parking, and I ended up walking a

while to the church. Over the past decade, I’ve been lucky enough to never have to go to one of these funerals. But I can say with absolute certainty that, after 10 years, the wars our country is engaged in came home. I can’t pretend the conflicts overseas are just political maneuvering anymore; war means heroism and it means sacrifice.

I know this is the point where I am supposed to make an argument for or against the use of military force in other countries. You, the readers, might expect me to use this tragedy as an example of whatever “agenda” I might have. But, that’s just something I’m not going to do. This is a time to remember those who serve or who have served and honor them for that reason alone. Forget the politics, forget pushing for drawdowns or surges, and remember that those things mean people – people who are willing to stand up and serve their country regardless of the cost.

And just about everywhere you drive these days in a metro area, you are barraged with billboards and blinking signs selling products, services, or ideas. Okay, maybe you’re not barraged, but there sure are a lot of new forms for just about any business or other entity to flash their wares. Hope is in sight, however. As technology has accounted for the variety of annoyances, it too is the source through which relief can be found. The DVR is very useful in not only eliminating commercials but also saving time when shows are recorded and saved for viewing at a later time. And the advent of Netflix, Hulu, and others I’m sure, you can lead a commercial free life, which will provide you the luxury of browsing the print ads at your convenience and on your terms.

about 50.” Armed with her flyers, Amelia was determined to complete her mission successfully by handing out flyers and appealing to the goodness of many individuals in her neighborhood. “She would give them a flyer and tell them about it,” Foster said. “Some gave her money right on the spot.” According to Schuster, when Amelia first contacted him, he thought to himself that the young girl had high aspirations. But after the first day of the sale, Schuster began to take notice. He said that Amelia contacted him after the first day of the sale to inform him of her status. “‘She is really doing well,’” Schuster said he thought at the time. “‘She might be able to do this.’” As each day of the fundraiser passed, Amelia informed Schuster of each day’s activity, namely the monetary value. “Amelia called him everyday after the sale,” Foster said, “and I think he was very shocked everyday.” The deputy was definitely pleased to hear the daily news updates, especially after other attempts to get a vest for his partner of more than four years. “It’s been something we’ve been trying to put in the budget the last couple of years,” Schuster said. Schuster himself was involved in the effort to a lesser extent by donating sale items for the fundraiser, and even taking time to swing by Amelia’s house with Ace for a demonstration in May. “It was planned because we wanted

the other kids to meet the dog,” Foster said. “The kids were thrilled to see the dog in action.” Others residents throughout her neighborhood also donated sale items, according to Foster, who added that the effort nearly became a communitywide effort. “Everyday, probably five to 10 repeat customers were spending what they had because they wanted the dog to have the vest,” she said. Foster noted that on one day of the sale a man from Brazil had shown up with several American friends, prompting him to inquire about the sale and its purpose. He quickly asked his American friends for money to place in Amelia’s tip jar. By the end of the four-day sale at her mother’s Brooklyn Park home, Amelia had raised nearly $2,000 for a new vest for Ace, the difference of which was donated by a local restaurant, according to Foster. “I don’t know that he would have received one without it,” Schuster said about Amelia’s fundraising effort. Schuster, who said he was impressed with Amelia’s maturity and ability to follow through in her task, commented on the brand new vest for his partner. “Older vests used to hinder the dog as much as they could help them,” he said of vests used in the past. “[The new vest] is something that is more flexible, less weight and less restrictive. Ace is able to wear it throughout his 10-hour shift.” As a sentimental gesture to Amelia, in addition to being recognized by the Dakota County Board of Commissioners, the vest was embroidered with the words, “Generously donated by Amelia.”

Vong, as with Mosser, feels this is a way of giving back to the community. “When I had an opportunity to open a business, I wanted to do it in Burnsville because I wanted to give back to the community,” Vong said. “When she wanted to do something similar, I was with it from the get go.” Vong continued by saying that her friend’s class is helping members of the community by offering classes that they would not otherwise be able to attend. “Not a lot of people can afford going to the gym or paying for this type of service, so I think it’s a wonderful opportunity for everybody to try it out and see how wonderful it is.” Vong added that Mosser’s donationbased class is definitely an example of her as a person, giving up her own time to instruct and educate others about a practice in which Mosser greatly believes. “She could actually be charging a lot for this type of service,” Vong said. “She is doing this out of the goodness of her heart. She made me a believer, and I had never done yoga before.” According to Mosser, she created the class because she knows from personal experience the positive benefits she has received from yoga. Coupled with this, Mosser said she is aware that some people may not be able to afford studio rates for a regular class. “I have fallen into a situation where I can help,” Mosser said. “I believe that people should have regular yoga available to them regardless of what their financial circumstances may be.” Currently a yoga instructor at a popular health club, Mosser commented on the limitations she wished to do

away with in OMroom. “I felt that my students were being limited with the style of yoga we were teaching,” Mosser said. “I wanted to bring my students an open facility so that other students can come and have no limitations on their practice. I don’t want money to be a limitation.” Mosser expanded on various limitations that exist in other yoga classes at other locations and how limitations apply. “Some places, where I’m teaching yoga, there will be limitations about physical touch, which is understandable,” Mosser said. “There are limitations on the kinds of incense or if you can use incense or essential oils.” Kaity McIntosh-Tran is one of Mosser’s clients from Apple Valley and makes the commute from her home in Apple Valley to Burnsville solely to have Mosser as an instructor. “She is such a great instructor that I decided to follow her wherever she goes because she is so wonderful,” McIntosh-Tran said, adding that the setting offers its advantages. “She is able to give hands-on adjustments.” Fellow classmate Armando Garcia of Burnsville met Mosser while attending yoga classes at another facility, and in keeping with Mosser’s philosophy, Garcia followed Mosser to OMroom. “I was interested in getting into a program that was a little bit outside the gym regiment,” Garcia said. “They are a little bit more restrictive.” According to Garcia, Mosser is very patient, and she observes her clients as they practice and guides them with regard to technique. Those new to yoga, according to Mosser, would more likely benefit from her Thursday class, which is designed for beginners, while the more advanced students would do better in her Tuesday class. Out on tour Sen. Al Franken visited Dakota County Aug. 19 BY MATTHEW HANKEY • SUN NEWSPAPERS United States Senator Al Franken has been touring Minnesota throughout much of August after the congressional recess in Washington began earlier this month. On Aug. 19, Franken made four stops in Dakota County. First, he stopped at the Burnsville Ice Center, where he toured the facility and met with metro area mayors where they discussed energy sustainability ideas. Burnsville Mayor Elizabeth Kautz hosted the meeting. The ice center installed a new geothermal heating and cooling system last year, funded largely by federal stimulus money. Franken said providing more federal funding for metro city energy efficient projects might prove difficult, but remained hopeful help could come from Washington, as well as from the city level. “I see right now we are on incredible budge constraints,” Franken said. “It’s

tough to give the kind of funding we had during the stimulus package.” Franken was appointed to the Senate’s Committee on Energy and Natural Resources this January. He is looking at ways to jumpstart the state’s economy and job market on his Renewable Energy Listening Tour this summer. “We need to be finding ways in different areas of growth,” Franken said. “Energy efficiency is one of those jobs.” Franken’s next stop was Just Kidding Around, an early childhood care center in Lakeville, where he met with staff and children. Just Kidding Around received $2,500 in federal grant money to make improvements to classrooms and learning supplies. Franken toured the childcare center and learned about its commitment to providing a healthy learning place for children. “It’s very exciting,” said Jan Karrmann, director of Just Kidding Around, of Franken’s visit. “The grants are so worthwhile because quality, affordable education is very important.” Franken also toured Dakota County Technical College in Rosemount and Dakota Electric in Farmington.

Lakeville candy store now under new ownership BY MICHAEL RICCI • SUN NEWSPAPERS Two new Lakeville business owners intend to make one sweet spot even sweeter. Lakeville resident Becky McGuire and Farmington resident Mary Liebfried finalized the sale of Miracole’s Candy Shoppe, 20830 Holt Ave S., Lakeville, Aug. 16, just four months after the business opened. Along with a plan of greatly expanding the store’s product line, the new owners also have a few other changes in the works.

McGuire and Liebfried plan to expand the store’s current product line to include such items as gourmet candies, gourmet cookies, vintage soda and vintage candy brands. One item in particular that McGuire said will be added to the existing large line of products is special, according to McGuire. “Our plan is to expand on the merchandise to include handmade fudge and caramels,” she said, adding that these come from a woman in Colorado who

makes her own. “One of my best friends works for her. She only wants one or two stores to carry her merchandise per state.” McGuire continued by saying that she and Liebfried said that the changes were an effort to create an old-fashioned look at the store while offering unique products, unlike those sold at large discount stores. Though the new entrepreneurs are still in the process of implementing their intended changes, McGuire commented on the existing product line, which often conjures memories for those old enough to remember certain candies from their youth. “We have retro candy,” she said. “People come in and get really excited. As one example, McGuire indicated that Miracole’s Candy Shoppe carries Zotz, which is a popular item and one of the store’s best sellers, according to

Lorraine McGuire, age 84 of Mankato, died Tuesday, August 16, 2011 at the Mayo Clinic Health System – Mankato. Funeral Service will be held 10:30 a.m. Friday, August 19, 2011 at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Mankato, with Fr. John Kunz officiating. Visitation will be from 9:00-10:30 a.m. Friday at the church. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery, Mankato. Mankato Mortuary is handling arrangements. Lorraine Mardell McGuire was born February 19, 1927 to Elmer and Gina (Austinson) Blocker in Farmington, MN. She graduated from high school in Northfield and later attended Mankato Commercial College. She married Robert McGuire on December 17, 1946 in St. Peter. Lorraine worked as a bookkeeper for LaVogue and Thompson clothing stores in Mankato. She was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary, St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, and she volunteered at Oaklawn Health Care Center. Lorraine loved to golf and bowl in her earlier years, and most recently enjoyed watching game shows, going to the casino, visiting with people, gardening, and playing BINGO with the residents at Oaklawn. Lorraine is survived by 6 children, Janice (Jerry) Terrell, Kevin (Debby) McGuire, Mary (Buck) Mason, Bob (Robin) McGuire, Laurie (Dave) Schuh, Kelly McGuire; 10 grandchildren; 6 great-grandchildren; and brother, Erv Blocker of Lakeville. She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert in 2009; and her parents.

Senior Center move approved We Won’t Break Your Heart. by Lakeville City Council Fan Appreciation Community auction to be held this fall for fincancial support BY MICHAEL RICCI • SUN NEWSPAPERS Not one, not two, but three Lakeville organizations recently received what they have been seeking from the city, but it did not come easily. During its Aug. 1 meeting, the Lakeville City Council voted 3-2 in favor of a $1.1 million project to repurpose the former police station building into a new home for the Lakeville Senior Center, the Lakeville Area Historical Society, and the Lakeville Yellow Ribbon organization. Councilmembers Matt Little, Laurie Rieb and Kerrin Swecker supported the project, while Mayor Mark Bellows and Councilmember Colleen LaBeau voted against the proposal. The 3-2 vote immediately followed debate over the project, which was at times contentious. At one point in the meeting, Bellows commented that the project was not “visionary” and that Lakeville seniors deserved better. “I do think the decision lacks vision in terms of what a senior center can be,” Bellows said in a follow-up interview. “I’ve been saying it’s a very challenging facility. I just think with a little planning we could do a lot better.” Little, also in a follow-up interview, disagreed with the mayor as he did when he cast his vote Aug. 1. “Visionary or not, this is a great plan,” Little said. “It provides [seniors] with a place to get together and have an active social life, and get involved in other aspects of the community.” Little added that in addition to seniors, the new location would also house the historical society as well as the Yellow Ribbon group, which will help preserve the heritage of Lakeville, hence the new name of Heritage Center.

The project will not rely on a tax increase but rather will use reserve city funds as well as fundraising. Linda Walter, Senior Center coordinator, said she and other center members were happy with the vote as the move will meet certain needs. “They are very pleased that we are going to get more space. We are even getting new people coming in,” she said, referring to the exposure the issue has received. “We just had our renewal membership in May,” Walter said. “Now we have about 1,000 members.” The current amount of space available to seniors and members of the historical society equals approximately 8,000 square feet, but the repurposed police station offers more than twice this amount – 17,000 square feet, according to Lakeville Parks and Recreation Director Steve Michaud. For Walter and Senior Center members, space has been one of the primary issues for the push to the new location. “The exercise class has about 30 people in it,” she said. “Because right now the main room is high traffic, you’re having exercise class and people are walking through it.” Michaud added that the new location would also feature a nice, modern workout room, restroom facilities and men’s and women’s lockers. But Michaud’s specialty is not so much discussing amenities as it is raising funds. “You will see a lot of information coming out in the next couple of weeks,” he said. A communitywide auction in conjunction with two bi-annual city auctions will benefit the new Heritage Center, as the proceeds from the auctions will go to the Heritage Center. One auction has already been held, according to Michaud. “We’re going to solicit the entire community to donate quality items to this,” Michaud said.

ISD 191 board appoints VandenBoom Eagan resident Robert VandenBoom has become the newest member of the Burnsville-EaganSavage School District 191 Board of Education following his Aug. 18 appointment. VandenBoom was among nine residents who applied to fill the R o b e r t seat left vacant following VandenBoom the resignation of Gail Morrison, who was elected November 2010 to a four-year term on the board. A senior marketing manager with The Toro Company, VandenBoom has previously served District 191 through work on school and district-wide site councils, as a member of the Instruction and Curriculum advisory committee, and on the District Facilities task force. Volunteer group FROM PAGE 1 mute as one minor issue of a broader goal. “I’ve always been into helping moms and babies, and I love to sew,” Dummler said. “Those are my two passions.” Volunteers work with fabric to create the basic baby bag from cutting fabric to basic sewing and quilting. “This is to get a newborn through the first couple of days,” Dummler said of Cute as a Button’s purpose. She added that the items included are to help infants to stay clean and warm. A basic bag includes such handmade items as a diaper bag, a quilt, a fitted crib sheet, a pair of receiving blankets, two sleepers, two gowns, flannel blankets, and much more. With the winter just around the corner, Dummler said that some of the items change for the season. These items include jackets with matching pants, mittens, a knitted or crocheted sweater, a pair of booties, a hat, and of course a toy. After obtaining the needed supplies, the group meets and goes to work on creating these care packages. “At the event I communicate with the

Bundles of Love coordinator, and then I organize the Cute as a Button volunteers to do what is needed,” Dummler said. “All of the stuff is handmade. We get bolts of fabric, and we cut it and sew it to create the items.” According to Dummler, she and her group of volunteers created approximately 60 bundles last month, but estimating a monthly average was a tad difficult. “It depends on what the need is,” Dummler said. The group also receives its share of donated items from area businesses. “Those items include diapers, baby soaps, baby wipes, and then if we have extra donations, we will put in an extra towel or pacifier.” According to Becky Pasch, south metro coordinator for Bundles of Love, her organization gets volunteers from all over the south metro area, including volunteers for the Cute as a Button project through HandsOn Twin Cities. “If they get hooked, they come back,” Pasch said. Pasch continued by saying her group is 100-percent volunteer run and that it has been in existence for about 11 years. “When we started, we had a three-fold tactic,” she said. “The first was the bundles that get distributed. The second was … to make preemie clothing, and the third was burial items.”

With the premature and burial items, that is handled a little differently, according to Pasch. “We have hospitals that we work with,” she said. “We will supply them with different items they can keep on hand so when someone does experience a loss, they can give the items to the family.” Angela Carlson, program coordinator for HandsOn Twin Cities, said HandsOn Twin Cities is the largest volunteer center in the state, as part of a network with a connection to Atlanta, Ga. “HandsOn Twin Cities partners with Bundles of Love to bring volunteers from the community into the Bundles of Love sites once a month in Burnsville, and New Brighton,” Carlson said. “The program I manage is called Impact Now because what we seek to do is give community members a chance to make an impact in the community now.” Though the Cute as a Button group meets the first Saturday of each month, this first Saturday sometimes is postponed a week due to holidays, such as Labor Day, and others throughout the year that might conflict with the group’s intended meeting time. I-35E under repair until early to mid-October The Minnesota Department of Transportation began resurfacing 5.25 miles of I-35E between Lone Oak Road and the Mississippi River Aug. 18. The project is expected to last six to seven weeks. MnDOT says traffic will be impacted by lane, ramp and loop closures and up to four weekend full-closures that will be needed to complete the project on time. An average of 90,000 vehicles travel this section of I-35 each day. Both directions of I-35E will be resurfaced and repaired between Lone Oak Road and Highway 5. Ramps and loops will also be resurfaced and repaired to create a smoother driving surface and ensure greater road durability. Road crews will make improvements and repairs to the drainage systems, guardrails, signal systems and other technology infrastructure while the lanes are closed. BY MIKE SHAUGHNESSY • SUN NEWSPAPERS Kelly Nizzari and Steve Willingham aren’t looking for sympathy, but they are asking people to be patient with the Lakeville North volleyball team. A lot of things have happened since the Panthers won their first state championship in November 2010, and the changes have left them with a much different look. Three seniors graduated, including one (Kellie McNeil) who was the state player of the year. Their coach (Milan Mader) retired, ending a 44-year career. And one of the state’s top returning players transferred; Taylr McNeil (Kellie’s sister) will play for Eagan this year. None of this dissuaded the state coaches association from putting Lakeville North at the top of the Class 3A preseason rankings. “With the players we lost, we’ll have to work 10 times as hard to be the team we were,” said Nizzari, a senior captain. “We think we can go back to state, but we’re obviously going to have a lot of competition.” Lakeville North is one of three teams in Section 3 in the top five of the state Class 3A rankings. The others are Bloomington Jefferson (second) and Lakeville South (fifth). The Panthers believe they have enough pieces in place to make another run at the South Suburban Conference, section and state championships. “Anybody who thinks we’re going to be the same team as last year, they’re crazy,” said new head coach Steve Willingham, who served as Mader’s varsity assistant at Lakeville High School from 1986-2005. “But I’m excited about the kids we have here. It’s a great group of kids. We’ll be a different team, but I feel we’re still going to be a good team.” Sophomore outside hitter Alyssa Goehner had 41 kills and 35 digs in three state tournament matches last year (the Panthers played only nine

games at state, sweeping all three of their opponents in three games). Goehner was named to the all-tournament team. “She’s a fantastic player. Having her back makes a big difference,” Willingham said. “And like a lot of our kids, she played a lot in the off-season.” Sophomore libero Abby Monson played for a Mizuno Northern Lights club team that won the 15-year-old open division at the U.S. Junior National Championships. Goehner played for a Northern Lights team that was second in the 16 open division. Also back for North are senior middle hitter Nicole Latzig and senior Jessica Wolff, a back-row player last year who will take on the setting responsibilities. Nizzari saw playing time off the bench in the state tournament. Also on the Panthers’ roster are senior defensive specialist Bri Hagen, senior out-

side hitter Emma Woodruff, junior defensive specialist Laura Larson, junior middle hitter Haley Walker and sophomore right-side hitter Sam Flattum. Willingham is not unfamiliar to the Lakeville North players. He’s also a former junior volleyball director in the community. Freshman team coach Julie Marvets is a holdover from last year’s staff. Another assistant coach, Kayla Smith, is a former Lakeville High School player. “Our philosophy is, No. 1, go get the ball,” Willingham said. “No. 2, we want to put players in spots where they’re doing things they’re comfortable with.” The Panthers held a four-team scrimmage on Aug. 20 at the end of their first week of practice. “I was really impressed with how we played,” Nizzari said. “We’ve only pracVOLLEYBALL: TO NEXT PAGE

Notebook: familiar opponents in football playoffs BY MIKE SHAUGHNESSY • SUN NEWSPAPERS South Suburban Conference football teams see plenty of each other during the regular season, and they will in the playoffs, too. The Minnesota State High School League, having added a seventh enrollment class for football several months ago, last week created new section alignments for the sport, which take effect in the 2012 season. Drawing the most attention, not surprisingly, were the section alignments in the new Class 6A, which will consist of the state’s 31 largest high schools plus one private school that opted (Cretin-Derham Hall). The schools in Class 6A are grouped into four eight-team sections. Section 3 will have seven South Suburban Conference teams (Burnsville, Eagan, Eastview, Lakeville North, Lakeville South, Rosemount and Prior Lake) and Park of Cottage Grove from the Suburban East. Grouping conference opponents in the same section appeared to be a theme. Class 6A, Section 4 will have seven Suburban East teams. Seven North Suburban Conference teams are in Section 5. All five Lake Conference schools are in Section 6. Brainerd, the only outstate team in Class 6A, was assigned to Section 5. In the first round of playoffs, teams will play within their own sections. In the second round, the four winning teams from one section will be matched against the four winners from another section. The section-vs.-section matchups are determined by random draw. Once the field is down to eight teams, coaches will seed the top four teams, which will be matched against the unseeded squads by blind draw. This format makes it possible for teams from the same conference and section to meet in the Class 6A championship game. Although the Bobcats outhit Mankato 8-5, they never advanced a runner past second base. Center fielder Rob Wiens was 3-for-3, and Eul and Hjort had two hits each. After being routed by Mankato 11-0 in its state tournament opener, Savage stayed alive with a 3-2 victory over Moorhead in an elimination game Aug. 21 in Brownton. The Outlawsâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; Anders Engberg pitched seven innings against Moorhead, allowing six hits and two earned runs in getting the victory. Ben Turnwall pitched two shutout innings to earn a save. Ryan Peterson and Tony Peterson each had two hits and one RBI for Savage.
