Closing of ISD 191’s Vale program left parents, teachers with questions – Feb. 10, 2011
BY MICHAEL RICCI SUN NEWSPAPERS Her mother was in the industry for around 50 years, and now her daughter is intent on reaching the same milestone. Lakeville resident and business owner Judy Barger is celebrating 25 years in business since 1987 – when she opened Barger’s Salon, 20700 Holyoke Ave., Lakeville. Barger, much like her mother, enjoys what she does so much that she plans on making it another 25 years in business at her downtown Lakeville location. Since first opening, Barger has expanded her salon three times that, according to Barger, is a testament to the loyalty of Lakeville residents. “I think that Lakeville is a very dedicated community,” Barger said. According to Barger, business at her salon has been pretty steady for the past two-and-ahalf decades, largely due to the clients’ loyalty. Recalling the

Business FROM PAGE 1 past, Barger was worried about her business at a time when the city “tore up” Main Street during construction that took place in the downtown area. Her fear was that the limited access would adversely affect the number of clients walking through the door. “I do think that people do support our little town,” Barger said of the downtown business district. “It’s always been pretty stable. I’ve never gone through a hard, hard time.” Barger went on to say that in 25 years she has had no complaints and that her clients have remained faithful nearly since first opening the salon, which has largely influenced her intent to remain in business in Lakeville for 25 more years. “I just really like this community,” she said of the business she has catered to and received. “We are definitely growing.” According to Barger, the salon underwent its third remodeling about four years ago. She said nearly everything was updated, including lighting, chairs, pictures, and other features to give the salon a more modern look. Barger was first introduced to the

She added this type of service is what keeps people coming back to the salon. “We are full service here,” Adelmann said. “Everyone gets a shampoo and blow dry, and style.” Incidentally, according to Adelmann, it was Judy who “nudged” her into the business along with her. “She bought me my first pair of scissors and got me in school,” she said of her attending cosmetology school. According to Adelmann, Judy never wanted to be a boss but rather just one of the girls. In fact, Judy originally wanted to name the salon “Our Gang” for its level of camaraderie, but it was an idea that never took hold on account of the longstanding presence of Barger’s Salon. Adelmann also referenced the community involvement on the part of Barger’s Salon. “The community involvement has been amazing,” she said. “[Judy] has been a member of the Lakeville Area Chamber of Commerce for the whole time.” Todd Bornhauser, executive director of the LACC, said 25 years in the retail business is a pretty special accomplishment, especially for privately owned and operated businesses.
industry by her mother, who at the time was running Katheryn’s Barger’s Hair Design, which later moved to Farmington from Lakeville. Judy was in middle school at the time she began helping out at the salon, where she continued to work through high school, which amounted to about five years total. It was also during this time that Judy made the decision to follow in her mother’s footsteps by earning a cosmetology license, continuing to help her mother. But in 1987, some changes were afoot, and Judy soon found herself in the position she had prepared for – business owner. Katheryn retired in 1987, so Judy continued to run her mother’s salon in Farmington for about four years, while running her own salon. “I really, really enjoy it,” Judy said, adding that her help included working at her mother’s clothing store, which was adjoined to the salon. Char Adelmann, a stylist and friend who has been with Barger’s off and on since it opened, said that Judy has had clients for 25-plus years. “They become your friends,” she said. “We don’t call them clients anymore.” Adelmann continued by saying the people who would be classified as regulars reach into the hundreds. “That’s what’s nice about the salon. All these girls are friends,” Adelmann said, adding that each stylist gets to

South metro women launch nanny placement business Aim to make the business more personable BY MICHAEL RICCI – SUN NEWSPAPERS A more personable and hands-on approach is the goal of two south metro women who just started a nanny placement agency. Rosemount resident Sarah McComb
and Shara Schmidt of Eagan officially started Hand in Hand Nanny Agency, 14116 Dearborn Path, in Rosemount on Dec. 1. Between the two, they have 13 years of experience in the field, which often was not the best experience due to a lack of communication by the agencies for which they had worked. For this reason, as well as being their own bosses, prompted McComb and Schmidt to launch their placement service, with nannies already serving in areas across the metropolitan area.
. . . Where Every Day Counts! Our Services include: • Regular visits from registered nurses with advance training in pain • On-call nurses available 24 hours/day, 7 days/week • Hospice aides to assist with bathing & other care needs • Medication, medial supplies & equipment • Social Workers to provide supportive counseling • Visits from spiritual care providers • Trained hospice volunteers providing respite care • In medical crisis, around-the-clock nursing care at home or short-term hospitalization • Bereavement support for your family • & so much more!
Within one week of opening, McComb and Schmidt already have a database filled up with what they described as qualified and passionate nannies. The two also managed to start Hand in Hand Nanny Agency with minimal costs and had success in getting their webpage to the top of major search engines, according to the two new entrepreneurs. But all of this work were steps to get them in the position in which they want to be – an opportunity to demonstrate the major difference between their agency and others in the field. “We genuinely believe that we can offer something different to the market that we are targeting compared with the current companies in our field,” Schmidt said. “We both had great relationships not only with the children that we have provided care for but also their parents.” The women are also the only employees of the agency, which provides another benefit for customers. “We are hands on 100 percent of the time,” Schmidt said. “We know all of our clients who come through our doors.” The hands-on approach, according to
both women, is an area of the industry that is much needed. According to Schmidt, she didn’t see the owners of agencies she had worked for nearly enough in her opinion, which left her the only option of inquiring about past, present and future positions with staff members who didn’t always have the answers. Schmidt added that she and McComb stay in frequent contact with their nannies and their families, by way of phone calls and emails. “As soon as we place a nanny, we give them a month or two,” Schmidt said. “We are going to check in and make sure the nanny and family are happy and everything is working well. The nannies and families should not have to be the ones calling us.” According to McComb, she found most of her nanny jobs by not going through an agency, a result of some “negative” experiences of her own. “We wanted to be involved in the placement before and after,” McComb said. “Our mission is to find the perfect match and create lifelong relationships with families. That is still what I have NANNY AGENCY: TO NEXT PAGE

Nanny agency FROM PREVIOUS PAGE with all my families. I still get Christmas cards every year.” McComb and Schmidt first met one another around three years ago. Schmidt had contacted an agency she was working for at the time with a request to pair with another nanny to provide a play date for the children for whom they were caring. This led to a tight friendship that exists today, especially with regard to their vision. “We are like best friends now,” Schmidt said, adding they had talked about starting their own placement agency if they could make it more personable. “We wanted to work with the kids and to help families out.” Hand in Hand places its nannies with children who are pre-kindergarten through 3 years of age. Right now their youngest client is 10 months old. As part of the placement process, Schmidt and McComb perform in-home consultations to get a feel for the fami-
lies, with the purpose of locating the best possible match after searching their database of available nannies. “We both want to be hands on with the families, or we don’t feel right placing a nanny or family with each other without first getting to know them.” The agency preferably likes to keep around 20 vetted nannies in its database at all times and is always looking for more. Since starting the business, McComb and Schmidt have been interviewing around 10 individuals a week, but this ranges from time to time, Schmidt said. A part of their process to ensure that each placement is beneficial to the clients, nannies, and the agency, McComb and Schmidt perform background and reference checks. And, before sending a nanny to any home, the two women have a policy of first visiting with families who request their services. “We want to make it worth their and our time while we are there,” Schmidt said. “That way we can see their home and make sure it’s a safe home. We don’t want to send our nannies anywhere we haven’t been ourselves. Safety is our number one concern.”

Sarah McComb of Rosemount, left, and Shara Schmidt of Eagan, who are very close friends, have 13 years combined experience in the nanny field and have gone into business for themselves, officially opening Hand in Hand Nanny Agency Dec. 1. (Submitted photo)
Currently, the business has nannies serving such metropolitan area communities as Blaine, Elk River, Lakeville, Farmington, Anoka, Inver Grove Heights, and even Hammond, Wisc. In other words, the business has not set any limits or boundaries in its attempt to appeal to all in and outside of the Twin Cities. According to McComb, many online nanny websites exist. In her opinion, which she bases on her experience work-
ing with other agencies, she said many of these services don’t know a lot about the families they are serving. McComb and Schmidt aim to eliminate that aspect, at least with Hand in Hand, by keeping frequent contact with families and nannies that are under their watch. “[Nannies] play a huge role in the kids’ lives,” McComb said. “It’s good to keep the relationship and the contact.” Info: 952-212-8102 or 952-412-0971.

Waiting until New Year’s to C URRENT make resolutions is bad form Burnsville • Lakeville

Self-improvements know no time of year Happy (almost) New Year! Aside from the proverbial party, the second biggest tradition in transitioning to a New Year is the New Year’s resolution. In grade school, I was instructed by my teachers to make a resolution each December for the upcoming New Year. My resolutions were typically family-related: “I will be nicer to my sister” or “I will try to heed my parents instructions before their fifth command.” When those scholastic mandates ceased, so did my yearly resolutions. It’s not that I don’t endeavor to make self-improvements or help others or complete any
MATTHEW HANKEY Eagan/Apple Valley Community Editor other altruistic task as a self-satisfactory exercise. The idea of assigning an arbitrary date to become a better person always struck me as odd in nature. If I needed an up tick in my moral fiber, by God, I got right on it. I understand that with a new year can come a fresh start. I get that. I really do. But, clichés such as “why put off what you can do today?” and “strike while the iron is hot” are actually quite applicable in this instance. I hearken back to the months preceding my impending marriage last year. It had become evident to me that I had not lost
any of the 10-15 pounds I gained in college in the three years since my graduation. With my marriage six months away, I decided it would behoove me to do something about that extra luggage for our photographer’s (and wife’s) sake. I lost five pounds in three months by eating healthier and biking. But, two months before the wedding, my motivation waned and exercising became a chore. But even though I stopped biking, I was proud I made a goal and stuck to it for more than a week or two. The same won’t be true for many New Year’s resolution makers. This didn’t enter my thought process at the time, but waiting until the coming New Year to lose any weight for my wedding would have been worthless. My wedding would have come and gone and I would be likely packing on more pounds,

as I’ve been told happens after marriage (It’s true). This advice is coming from a chronic procrastinator. As of the date of writing this column, Dec. 22, I have not yet bought my wife a Christmas present. (Does she really need more than one blender?) That was a joke, by the way. I would ask for your suggestions for a Christmas gift for my wife, but I shouldn’t set the precedent of exchanging gifts belatedly. Make goals and make them often. I’m not even suggesting that you shouldn’t make a New Year’s resolution if your heart is set on it. But, realize there are 364 other days a year that are resolution-lonely. The point is, putting off goals or resolutions is good for no one, even if you want to impress your friends and family with the results of the Shake Weight you got for Christmas.

Year in review FROM PAGE 1 grams at Neill Elementary School or Eagle Ridge Junior High, they may attend Vale. According to Stephanie Corbey, director of individualized student services for District 191, the decision to close Vale was not related to budget. It would cost the same amount of money to send the student out of the district, if they could not succeed in a site-based program, as it would to educate them at Vale. Rather, the administration saw a decrease in enrollment, which led to the decision. “It was started in 1997 with 90 students, and now we’re down to 45 students, so it’s not needed as it was before,” said Ruth Dunn, communications manager for District 191. Corbey added that the decrease in enrollment made it difficult for the students to have access to a full academic curriculum. The decision did not sit well with some teachers and parents. “It’s really hard as someone who has poured so much energy into this for so long to hear that I’m not highly
qualified,” said Jason Riley, teacher at Vale for the past 11 years. As it stands, the decision to close Vale was final. The program was discontinued at the end of the last school year. Students are still getting services, but are getting them in their respective schools spread among the district.
Burnsville lost ‘a great friend’ - City Councilmember Charlie Crichton died after illness – March 17, 2011 Longtime Burnsville City Councilmember Charlie Crichton died March 13 following a brief illness. Crichton, 84, died at St. Francis Hospital in Shakopee. He was first elected to the council in 1992 to fill an unexpired term. He was re-elected to full terms in 1994, 1998, 2002, 2006 and 2010. He had also served on the Arden Hills City Council 1972-1982 before moving to Burnsville. Representatives who worked with Crichton in Burnsville government remembered him as many things: a tax hawk, a colleague, and a friend, to

name a few. “Charlie and I served for 18 years on the council,” said Burnsville Mayor Elizabeth Kautz. “I enjoyed working with him. I know that Charlie had the city’s best interest at heart, and the city has lost a great friend. As for me, I’ve lost a dear colleague.” “Charlie always made us pause and reflect on what we were doing,” said Councilmember Dan Gustafson. “He was a friend, and we will miss him.” According to his section on the Burnsville city website, Crichton was also the city council liaison to the Fire Muster Board, the Charlie Chrichton Burnsville Convention and Visitor’s Bureau, the Parks and Natural Resources Commission, the Black Dog Watershed Management Organization and the Multi-Family Housing Managers. Crichton is survived by his wife, Terry; sons Tenney, Bob and Ross; daughters Jan, Beth and Deb; 18 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. Funeral plans were not announced by this article’s publication deadline. Burnsville spokesperson Deb Strahler said that Crichton’s replace-
ment on the council would either be appointed or elected through a special election. Strahler said the council could possibly discuss the procedure during its next scheduled meeting March 21.

But when a tornado hit Lakeville in 1973, there were no sirens to be heard. On May 9, 1973, the city was hit by a tornado that left a five-year-old boy dead and injured 10 others. Hardest hit was Connelly Mobile Home Park, near where Fleet Farm is today, which had 15 mobile homes damaged or destroyed in the conflagration. Hampton resident Kathy Fritz was in one of those mobiles homes when the sky turned dark. She had just put her 14-month-old son down for a nap. According to Fritz’s husband, the Minnesota State Patrol officers who were at the scene estimated that their home had rotated a half dozen times while 25 to 30 feet in the air before finally stopping, leaving Kathy with only minor injuries and their son amazingly uninjured. Information published in newspaper accounts at the time indicated the tornado took one life and accounted for about 10 injuries. The one death was a 5-year-old Brent Larson, who was a neighborhood playmate of the Fritz’s son, but the Fritz’s said they did not know the boy or his family very well. Year in review FROM PAGE 10 Dan Kealey, referring to the first time the issue was brought to his attention. “The area is really changing. I think this Wal-Mart is going to help spur a lot of other development.” Slania, responding to a question posed by Mayor Elizabeth Kautz, said that there is a 12-month construction timeframe, adding that the store should be completed in September or October of 2012.
Four-year-old Lakeville boy honored for 911 call – July 7, 2011 Kieran O’Neill called 911 when his grandmother fell ill in the spring, and he was honored Sunday, June 19, at the Minneapolis Convention Center during the National Emergency Number Association conference. He was awarded with a national 911 Local Heroes Medal of Honor award from the 911 for Kids organization. When Kieran made the call, he had just turned 4 years old, but his age did
Kieran O’Neill not detract from his sincerity, according to Dakota Communications Center dispatcher Victoria Ryan. While the majority of emergency calls received from children of that age are accidental, Kieran’s was different.

Last September, Kieran’s father, Mike, took a few moments to go over the 911 calling procedure with his son. Mike had discussed 911 with Kieran on other occasions, but on Sept. 10, Mike’s instructions turned out to be quite timely. Mike explained that Kieran’s grandmother, Nancy, had become ill on previous occasions. Mike covered the entire calling process from their home phone, quizzing Kieran along the way. He showed the 4-year-old which buttons to push, including the button to activate the speaker feature. “I told him, ‘Just do that. Mommy will be home soon, but just in case,’” Mike said. His gut feeling turned out to be right, as Nancy had fallen ill while Mike and his wife, Kandace, had left Kieran with her for a brief period of time. Kandace was on her way home, while Mike had left for work. The boy stayed on the phone until help arrived and brought Nancy to a nearby hospital where she made a full recovery. According to Ryan, Kieran was very bright as he answered all of her questions and followed her directions with ease. Kieran’s calm and collected demeanor, and his ability to communicate well, really caught the 911 dispatcher’s attention.
Sewer line blast displaces more than 100 people – July 21, 2011 For some Burnsville residents, the weekend of July 8-10 literally started with a bang. Burnsville police and fire officials received a report at about 1:35 p.m. Friday, July 8, that three explosions occurred in the northeast part of the city in the Ridgewood Court and West River Hills Drive area. Burnsville Fire Marshal Lee LaTourelle said an underground sanitary sewer line erupted, sending three manhole covers airborne, with one going at least 10 feet in the air according to witness testimony. Emergency workers tested the sewer lines and detected high amounts of carbon monoxide and flammable gasses. By that evening, the sewer system was lightly flushed for a couple hours, LaTourelle said. Between 100-150 residents of the River Hills Drive and Highway 13 East neighborhood were evacuated, though no injuries were reported, LaTourelle said. Damage was limited to a melted plastic tube near a laundry tub in one of the houses in the area, according to YEAR IN REVIEW: TO PAGE 19

Q. Why should I consider adding a humidifier to my home comfort system? A: During the winter, the air in your home becomes dry, causing a scratchy throat, dry eyes, static, and can also dry out your wood furniture/floors. A humidifier brings moisture into your home by producing a cool mist during the heating cycle of your furnace. The humidifier setting should be kept between 25% to 45% humidity. If kept in this range, it will eliminate the discomfort of dry air, and reduce static levels in your home. If the humidity setting is too high, it will produce too much moisture resulting in water on the windows. The humidifier pad should be changed once a year and annual maintenance should be considered with your furnace check.

Q. Can I refinance my home even though I may have no equity?
If your home mortgage is owned by Fannie Mae or Freddie Mac you may still be able to refinance with little or no equity in your home. With rates at historic lows look to your Community Bank for options to refinance your home. By refinancing you could save thousands of dollars over the life of your loan. Dental Advice Q: I'm trying to whiten my teeth and bleaching doesn't seem to work very well, do I have any other options? A: Yes, you do! Modern dentistry has some great solutions to permanently whiten teeth. As we age, standard bleaching systems (strips, home trays, etc.) don't work as well as they do for younger teeth and the results often don't last. Traditionally, if you had difficult to whiten teeth, severely stained or darkly discolored teeth, the only solution was to cover them with veneers. However, there now is a whitening solution that gets amazing results while preserving the natural tooth structure. For just over the cost of one veneer your dentist can now do KöR® Deep Bleaching™, the most effective whitening system on the market today. The KöR® Whitening Deep Bleaching™ system works amazingly well on all patients. The results are unbelievably white teeth, even on the darkest stained teeth, that last a lifetime. If you have stained or difficult to whiten teeth, this could be your long awaited answer. Ask your dental professional about this amazing whitening option today!

As a result of a strategic review of the organization and its mission by the board of directors, Mary Ajax’s role as president and CEO of 360 Communities has come to an end, effective immediately. The board of directors established a search committee to select a new leader for the organization. Meanwhile, Jeff Mortensen, leader of strategic development, will serve as the interim president and CEO. Volunteers created 360 Communities 40 years ago to serve the needs of south suburban communities. The board took action to change the organization’s leadership in part to ensure that 360 Communities will be able to continue to fulfill this role in the future. The leadership change will not impact any of the critical services we provide to the many people who depend on 360 Communities, according to officials. 360 Communities officials also believe that this transition is an opportunity to challenge the organization’s staff and leadership to transform the work they do and the way in which it delivers services and support to people in area communities.

Year in review FROM PAGE 14 LaTourelle. The melt likely occurred because there was no water in her plumbing p-trap. A public safety official told Burnsville resident Donna Sauve Sauve she would have to leave her home for three to four hours and she spent the evening at her son’s residence in Eagan. Many residents were displaced to River Hills Methodist Church until 9:45 p.m., when it was determined it was safe for them to return home, LaTourelle said. Public safety officials provided a bus to transport residents to the church for those who preferred not to drive out of the area themselves. Residents returned home after the levels of carbon monoxide and flammable gas readings went down to zero, Jungmann said. Following a thorough investigation, the cause was not concretely determined; however, Burnsville fire officials, based on the investigation, believed gasoline had been dumped into the sanitary sewer system either at a nearby home or business. Authorities gave residents informative pamphlets on how to proceed if they smelled gasoline in their homes.
Coughlin ‘privileged’ to serve citizens of Burnsville – Aug. 4, 2011 About four months after the passing of longtime Burnsville City Council member Charlie Crichton, the council once again obtained a full quorum. “It will be a privilege and honor to serve the citizens of Burnsville,” Bill Coughlin said. Coughlin defeated all of his opponents in Burnsville’s special election July 26 by receiving more than 1,700 votes, accounting for 58 percent of all votes cast. Tom Bill Coughlin Hanson followed Coughlin by receiving more than 600 votes in his election bid. In the weeks leading to the special election, Coughlin hit the campaign trail nearly every day of each week. In five consecutive weeks, Coughlin said he was knocking on doors six of seven days. In the two weeks prior to these weeks, Coughlin said he was door knocking all seven days. In preparation, he met with Tom

Taylor, Crichton’s campaign manager for around six years. Coughlin also received endorsements from the Burnsville Chamber of Commerce and Crichton’s two most recent campaign chairs, Taylor and Bob Alpers. Coughlin is looking forward to the future as a Burnsville city council member, much in the same vein as his predecessor. “Similar to Charlie, I look at each issue with a conservative fiscal philosophy,” he said. “The rest is the evidence and facts within the scope of that point of view.” As an example of his pro-business point of view, Coughlin referenced a 3-1 vote by the city council to modify a signage variance for Best Buy. The variance application requested to lease space immediately facing I-35W. “It was absolutely the right vote,” he said, adding it is the kind of positive message for business in Burnsville. Coughlin will serve three-and-a-half years of Crichton’s term, which expires at the end of 2014.
Lakeville employee retained counsel for possible defamation of character suit – Oct. 13, 2011 At a time when the Lakeville Senior Center issue seemed to be put to rest, a comment made by Lakeville’s mayor put the issue at the top of the agenda. During a regular city council meeting Sept. 19, Lakeville Mayor Mark Bellows accused city employee Linda Walter of lying to the city council with regard to the Lakeville Senior Center. Walter later retained legal counsel in the event she and her attorney decided to file a defamation of character lawsuit. Bellows had not originally identified the employee by name during the Sept. 19 meeting and called for a performance review meeting, after which time City Attorney Roger Knutson prompted Bellows to identify the employee as Walter. The performance review meeting took place Sept. 28. Walter, who serves the city as coordinator of the Lakeville Senior Center, retained St. Paul attorney Chris Heinze. About the performance review, Heinze said he thought Walter was relatively happy with the outcome, but he also indicated that it was not the “end all, be all.” When asked if his client would still consider filing a defamation of character lawsuit, Heinze said it is “still undecided.” He added that he talked with Lakeville City Attorney Roger Knutson about the suit, but reiterated no decision had been made.
Burnsville Mayor Elizabeth Kautz presented pastors Joe and Vicki Braucht of Destiny Church in Burnsville each with a Star Thrower award of gratitude, in addition to Kautz’ proclaiming Nov. 6 Pastor Joe Braucht Day in Burnsville. (Submitted photo) Knutson declined to comment on any specifics regarding the performance review, stating the information would be made public at the Lakeville City Council’s Oct. 3 regular meeting. A message left for Bellows about the matter went unreturned. According to Heinze, his client settled the suit because Walter was not interested in protracted litigation, adding that Walter simply settled for attorney fees. At issue is the former police station, which was approved in a 3-2 vote by the Lakeville City Council during its meeting Aug. 1 to convert the structure into a new home for three groups, the Lakeville Senior Center, the Lakeville Area Historical Society, and the Lakeville Yellow-Ribbon organization.
Burnsville pastors celebrate 25 years – Nov. 17, 2011 They started their ministry to give to the community. Now, the community has given back to them. This past fall marked the 25th anniversary for pastors Joe and Vicki Braucht of Destiny Christian Church, 12119 16th Ave., Burnsville. Following a humble beginning in 1984, their ministry grew
through serving residents of Burnsville and other nearby communities, to the point where the church expanded to Owatonna in 2007 to serve the residents of that community as well. “Our very first service, we started with 12 people,” Vicki said, adding this was at Valley View Church of God on the border of Burnsville and Lakeville. Their goal was to increase the number of congregants from 12 to 120. “It took a couple of years,” Joe said, adding that they had to do whatever it took to get make ends meet. “I swept floors at K-mart. We did whatever it took.” In 1994, the Brauchts left the denomination to start Destiny Christian Church. Since that time, DCC became a mainstay in Burnsville and nearby communities for those who have been congregants since day one. And in the spirit of giving to their community, the Brauchts led many activities for the city and its residents. In return for their many years of service to their community, and locations beyond, the Brauchts were recognized during their 25th anniversary celebration, held at DCC Nov. 6. Burnsville Mayor Elizabeth Kautz attended the celebration and acknowledged Joe and Vicki’s contributions. The YEAR IN REVIEW: TO NEXT PAGE

South metro commuter relief on horizon – Dec. 8, 2011 According to Burnsville city officials, construction is set to begin at the intersection of Highway 13 and County Road 5 in Burnsville next year in the late summer or early fall. When it is completed, a new County Road 5 bridge to run over Highway 13 is expected to provide relief to an ever-growing area of congestion. The project had gone through several approvals, said Burnsville Public Works Director Steve Albrecht, and the city entered into a joint powers agreement with the county. “Dakota County is going to be the lead agency on the project,” he said. “Construction will go all the way through…the end of next year, all the way through 2013, and will be completed some-

time in the middle of 2014.” The Minnesota Department of Transportation is also working with the city and county to get the estimated twoyear project completed. According to Albrecht, the total cost would be around $45 million, but the collaboration with the county and MnDOT would mean that Burnsville would only be responsible for a portion of the overall cost.
“Burnsville’s cost is roughly $6.3 million, plus some utility costs that we haven’t determined yet,” Albrecht said. “There is a substantial amount of the money, roughly in the neighborhood of $29 million, that’s coming from [MnDOT] and federal grants.” He added that the difference would be the responsibility of the county. According to Burnsville Mayor Elizabeth Kautz, project planning has
been ongoing for nearly 10 years. “It has been a long time coming,” Kautz said, referring to years of effort to get to this point. “The congestion is getting worse.” According to Kautz, once completed it would allow traffic to flow into the MRQ in a north-south line, and it will allow Highway 13 traffic to flow freely to 35W and to the Ports of Savage, used by many semi-trucks.

PUBLIC SAFETY Eagan man arrested for domestic assault against his son Officers of the Lakeville Police Department arrested Steven Wilson, 52, of Eagan for domestic assault in the fifth degree shortly after noon Saturday, Dec. 10. The incident involved Wilson’s 12-year-old son, According to LPD Chief Tom Vonhof, the incident occurred after an eighth-grade basketball game at Lakeville South High School. LPD officers responded to a report of domestic assault. Upon arrival, officers were informed by witnesses that an adult, later identified as Wilson, had assaulted his 12-year-old son in the hallway of the school. The assault was stopped before the officers arrived by other adults who had to physically intervene to stop the incident, according to Vonhof, who added that the injuries sustained by the juvenile victim did not require medical attention. The officers interviewed Wilson and subsequently arrested him on a fifth-degree domestic assault

charge before Wilson was transported to the Dakota County jail in Hastings. “This assault is an example of particularly disturbing adult behavior on so many levels,” Vonhof said. “Parents attending youth sports events have such a great opportunity to be a positive role model for kids, and that is clearly not what happened here.” Making its way through the criminal justice system, Dakota County Attorney James Backstrom announced Monday, Dec. 19, that his office has increased the charges against Wilson. The Lakeville city attorney had previously charged Wilson with one count of misdemeanor domestic assault, according to Backstrom, who added to that charge one count each of malicious punishment of a child and neglect of a child. Both charges are gross misdemeanors. “Violence against children under any circumstance is unacceptable,” Backstrom said. “It is particularly disturbing when it is associated with a youth sporting event, as is alleged here.” Wilson posted bond and was released. His next court appearance will be scheduled sometime in January.
BPD announces 2011 alcohol compliance check results Results from a series of alcohol compliance checks conducted in Burnsville show that 94 percent of the city’s alcohol retailers refused to sell alcohol to persons under the age of 21. Of the 72 on- and off-sale establishments checked Nov. 14, 68 establishments passed while four were cited for selling alcohol to a minor. Establishments that fail a compliance check face penalties that include fines and a suspended liquor license or both. “Anytime we conduct compliance checks like this, we truly hope that all of the businesses pass,” said Burnsville Police Chief Bob Hawkins. “While underage drinking is a serious problem, we still make it a point to reach out to the businesses that ‘slip up’ to help them get back on track. We view a passing compliance check as a victory for both our residents and our businesses.” Burnsville Police conducted the compliance checks with funding from

Lakeville criminal makes the wrong turn at intersection While on routine patrol on the overnight shift recently, Lakeville police Officer Tom Stewart pulled up to a red light at an intersection and stopped, waiting for the light to turn. When the turn signal light turned to green, a vehicle right in front of his squad made an illegal lane and U-turn, nearly causing a collision with other traffic. Stewart immediately activated his lights and stopped the vehicle. When he walked up to the car, the driver was nervous and avoided eye contact when Stewart asked to see his license. Stewart soon understood the driver’s behavior when he found that the driver had an active felony arrest warrant and a revoked driver’s license. Stewart arrested the driver and then found that the passenger in the vehicle also had an active arrest warrant. The driver and passenger were transported to the Dakota County jail in Hastings on the arrest warrants and multiple other charges. No Motels, No Hype Just Honest Pricing Everyday !

Notebook: Lakeville North wrestlers win tourney, edge Bloomington BY MIKE SHAUGHNESSY – SUN NEWSPAPERS While nationally ranked teams such as Apple Valley and Simley grab much of the spotlight, some less-heralded Minnesota high school wrestling programs also have had good starts. Lakeville North co-head coach Paul Donner knows his team will operate in Apple Valley’s shadow as long as the two schools are in the same conference (South Suburban). “Can’t do anything about that,” Donner said. What the Panthers can do is make a little noise themselves. They won a tournament in Richfield on Dec. 24, beating South Suburban rival Eastview 52-17 in the championship match. On Dec. 20, North beat Bloomington Kennedy/Jefferson 33-32, with Aaron Almedina getting a pin in the heavyweight match to push the Panthers one point in front. Teams such as Bloomington and Prior Lake have been in the second tier in the South Suburban. “We have a kid at 138 pounds [Justin Dunnell] who was willing to go up to 152 to face [Bloomington’s] highestrated wrestler,” Donner said. “The goal was to avoid giving up six points [for a fall], and their kid only got four. “It’s like in basketball when you ask a kid to guard somebody who averages 30 points a game, and he holds him to 20. Not every kid would be willing to do that, but it was big for us.” The Panthers have two wrestlers ranked in the top 10 in their weight NOTEBOOK: TO NEXT PAGE

Will summertime effort pay off in March for Cougars? Boys hockey team weary of coming up short in playoffs BY MIKE SHAUGHNESSY SUN NEWSPAPERS They have good memories of their summer of training together – and they hope that means no more bad memories in March. The last three years, Lakeville
South’s players boarded a bus for a long, quiet ride home from Rochester after losing to Lakeville North in the Section 1AA boys hockey tournament. Losing in the section semifinals in 2009 was annoying enough, but the last two playoff games against North
were particularly galling for South. Those were section championship games in which the Cougars were heavily favored, and they dropped both. Last March they scored on only one of 52 shots on goal and lost to HOCKEY: TO NEXT PAGE

Hockey FROM PREVIOUS PAGE Lakeville North 2-1 in triple overtime. Lakeville South dedicated its off-season to trying to prevent that from happening again. “The off-season was pretty intense,” South coach Kurt Weber said. “We expected our guys to work hard, and they did. We didn’t have too many of them miss [training] days.” One highlight of the off-season regimen was a “shooting camp” designed to get the players to shoot harder, quicker and more accurately. “It’s because we couldn’t score on that dang goalie,” Lakeville South senior defenseman Joe Freemark said. The “dang goalie” was Lakeville North’s Charlie Lindgren, who shut out South in the 2010 Section 1AA final and held the Cougars to one goal in 76 minutes, 25 seconds in the 2011 title game. This year South won’t have to deal with Lindgren, who gave up his final season of high school eligibility to play Junior A hockey. Recently, the shooting practice appears to have paid off. After dropping their first two games to Edina (5-1) and Eagan (4-3), the Cougars won the next three by a combined 21-3. “We had a bad start against Edina,” said senior defenseman Charlie Heller. “I thought we played a strong game against Eagan, even though they outshot us.” “Edina had a few more games under its belt when we played them,” Freemark said. “I think it was their fourth game and our first.” Starting the season with back-to-back games against ranked teams didn’t bother Weber. In fact, it was part of the
plan. “We scrimmaged [No. 1-ranked] Duluth East, too,” Weber said. “Then we played Edina and Eagan. We made a special trip to see Duluth East because we wanted to see the best teams. It gets our kids used to the pace of the game and shows them what they need to do to play with teams like that.” Lakeville South, ranked 18th in Class AA, drubbed Rosemount 6-1 and Eastview 8-1 in South Suburban Conference games. On Dec. 19, they put on a clinic against White Bear Lake, routing the Bears 7-1 and holding them to eight shots on goal. The line of Justin Kloos, Alex Harvey and Pat Lauderdale shredded White Bear Lake. Kloos had a hat trick and one assist, Harvey had a goal and two assists and Lauderdale had an assist. Kloos, a University of Minnesota recruit who scored 90 points last season, had 15 points (seven goals, eight assists) in South’s first five games. Harvey had five goals and five assists, while Lauderdale had six points on two goals and four assists. Kloos and Harvey are in their third year as linemates, while Lauderdale is a first-year varsity player. They are expected to be one of the most explosive lines in the state. “You have to give a player like Justin a little more freedom because he’s such a thinker,” Weber said. “But he has defensive responsibilities, just like our other forwards. And at the same time, we expect our third line to be able to play in the offensive zone.” Returning forwards such as John Wittala, Michael Chuinard, Shane Hill and Grant Gangeness also can supply offense. Several of the Cougars’ defensemen also can score, including Heller, who had a goal and two assists against White Bear Lake. The Cougars believe they can make it

This is the first year of wrestling under the weight class changes the National Federation of State High School Associations approved last April. The number of weight classes remained the same at 14. But the lightest weight class went from 103 to 106 pounds, and the changes essentially removed one class from the lighter weights and added one in the upper weights. Not all coaches liked the changes. “I wish they had left them alone,” said Jim Jackson, coach of six-time defending state Class 3A champion
classes by the Guillotine, a statewide wrestling publication – sophomore Collin DeGrammont, ninth in Class 3A at 106, and senior Anton Kalista, fourth at 160. They, along with sophomore Colton Pasvogel (132), freshman Lucas Westrich (138) and Almedina (heavyweight), are candidates to make a run in the Rumble on the Red tournament Thursday, Dec. 29, and Friday, Dec. 30, in Fargo, N.D.. “Some of the best teams from Minnesota, North Dakota and South

tough on teams that concentrating on checking the Kloos-Harvey-Lauderdale line. “Our second and third lines have been playing better and better,” Freemark said. The Cougars, who played Bloomington Jefferson in a South Suburban Conference game Dec. 22, faced Stillwater in the first round of the Schwan Cup Silver Division tournament Dec. 26. They were to play Breck or
Apple Valley in the second round Dec. 27. What they have to figure out is how to replicate their play in the second period of the White Bear Lake game, where they scored four unanswered goals and outshot the Bears 13-1. “If we play like we did in that period,” Freemark said, “we can win any game.” Even in the playoffs.
Apple Valley. “Teams have a hard enough time getting big kids to come out, and now there’s an extra weight up top.” Donner, the Lakeville North co-head coach, said “we have more lighterweight kids than big kids, and I think a lot of teams are in the same situation. When you go to tournaments and see the brackets for the four weight classes from 182 to 285, I think you’re going to see a lot of open spots.”
forced to be creative about where they train and compete, but teams in the South Suburban Conference got in two meets before the holiday break. Lakeville North’s Ben Saxton, the 2011 state boys pursuit champion, won a 4.8-kilometer freestyle race Dec. 21 on artificial snow at Elm Creek Park Reserve in Maple Grove. Saxton’s time of 11 minutes, 20.78 seconds was about 25 seconds faster than runner-up Jan Ketterson of Bloomington. Lewis Kunik of North was third, and two skiers from ISD 196 (Apple Valley, Eagan, Eastview, Rosemount), Nick Acton and Nick Couillard, were fourth and fifth. Sonja Hedblom of ISD 196 won the girls race in 14:05.30, with Burnsville’s Vivian Hett taking second in 14:37.37.

Wildcats keep rolling in boys hockey Victory over Apple Valley is Eagan’s fifth in a row BY MIKE SHAUGHNESSY – SUN NEWSPAPERS After Eagan defeated Apple Valley 1-0 in the 2011 Section 3AA boys hockey championship game, fans looked forward to more grudge matches this season between the Wildcats and Eagles. The rivalry’s edge was dulled somewhat when several of Apple Valley’s top players chose to play elsewhere this season. The Eagles’ lineup was shortened even further for their Dec. 22 game against Eagan when three of their top six forwards were held out. Despite his team’s 5-0 loss last week, Apple Valley coach Jerry Hayes said his team had reason for optimism. “Five-on-five, I thought we played well, he said. “But we had some opportunities on the power play and didn’t convert, and Eagan scored three powerplay goals. “We won’t be the No. 1 seed in our sec-
tion; we realize that. Eagan should be the No. 1 seed. By the time the section playoffs start, we think we can be a dangerous team. Eagan, meanwhile, is a dangerous team now. The fourth-ranked Wildcats won their fifth consecutive game after a season-opening 2-1 loss at Eden Prairie. The Wildcats outscored their last three opponents 24-2. “We’re playing really well right now, said Eagan defenseman Eli May, a senior captain. “We don’t focus on the rankings. We have a lot of competition in practice, and I think it makes us better in the games. Sam Wolfe, Will Peterson and Will Merchant scored power-play goals for the Wildcats against Apple Valley. Zach Glienke had an even-strength goal, and senior forward Nick Kuchera had four assists. Eagan goalie Christian Butler made 11 saves. Eagan is deep and likes to play fast and physical, and May said he thought it had an effect late in the game against a shorthanded Apple Valley team. “We do bag skates [particularly grueling cardio-building workouts] and we
skate with weighted vests, May said. “We all know we have to train hard. Apple Valley (3-3-1 overall) expected to have Trent Heuer back for the Schwan Cup tournament this week, with a couple more missing players expected to return shortly thereafter. “We were down to nine skaters for the JV game, Hayes said. “Even when we get everybody back, we won’t be as explosive as we were the last couple of years, but we’re OK with that. Right now it looks like we need to spend some time on our power play and our [penalty] kill. Senior defensemen such as Derek Smith, a fourth-year regular, and Anthony Leong have helped keep the Eagles competitive. “Derek’s an Elite League kid and someone we’ve put a lot of expectations on, Hayes said. “It’s been the same thing with Anthony Leong, and they’ve both been solid. Eagan defended its championship at the South St. Paul Premier Tournament last week. As the only ranked team in the field, the Wildcats were heavily favored to place first again. “Hopefully we’ll be pretty good over there, May said last week. Following the South St. Paul tournament, the Wildcats are scheduled for a showdown with No. 2-ranked Minnetonka at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 3, at Minnetonka High School.

“Regifting” is becoming a very popular holiday tradition. This is when you wrap up an old gift you don’t want anymore and “regift” it to someone else who does. It’s really becoming trendy at holiday parties! It’s a great way to recycle and save some money at the same time, which is especially important around the holidays. Local car dealer, David and Jonathan Dworski from Park Chrysler Jeep, is capitalizing on the growing holiday trend. They have created the Ultimate Regift Exchange Sale, and it’s gong on now until January, 2, 2012. “Regfiting is big in my family. We all love to save money and recycle old gifts. So I’ve decided to help my customers ‘regift’ their old car. It’s a fun way to get in on the holiday spirit and drive a nicer, newer car at the same time! ” explained Jonathan.
Here’s how it works: Bring in your current car (you know, the one you’re tired of driving, the one with the squeaky brakes, the one that’s lost its new car small, the one you can’t stand driving anymore) and Park Chrysler Jeep will help you regift that old car to someone else who will love it, so you can start driving a nicer, newer car today!
•••••••••••••••••••••••••• The best part about this system is that it’s designed to help all types of people. Parents who drive a minvan and have excellent credit, this is perfect for you. Young people who are just getting started and haven’t built up a strong credit profile, we can help you too. People who have suffered from mistakes in the past like unpaid bills or late payments, or even had to deal with a short sale, we want to help you too.
•••••••••••••••••••••••••• No More Misfit Cars The secret to regifting your old car is Park Chrysler Jeep’s For The People® Vehicle Refinance System. the advisors at Park Chrysler Jeep can help you get rid of your current lease or loan, even if you have payments remaining, even if you owe more than it’s worth. “The holiday season is a great time to upgrade your car because dealers are trying to end their year with a bang, “says marketing consultant Jimmy Vee. Park Chrysler Jeep’s regifting promotion is one of the best ideas I’ve seen in years. I love it because it’s fun, festive and really helps people get what they want for the holidays. Who doesn’t want to drive a nicer, newer car for Christmas? This promotion doesn’t limit you if you have a lease or loan that isn’t paid off. Park Chrysler Jeep will help you get out of the old car you hate and into a nicer, newer car in time for the holidays. Their For the People® Vehicle Refinance System can work for you even if you still owe thousands on your current lease or loan. Some people may say it’s the best gift of the season.
Regifting For Customer With Good Credit Or Bad Jonathan told us what he likes most about this innovative holiday promotion:
In the Community, With the Community, For the Community
“The best part about this system is that it’s designed to help all types of people. Parents who drive a minivan and have excellent credit, this is perfect for you. Young people who are just getting started and haven’t built up a strong credit profile, we can help you too. People who have suffered from mistakes in the past like unpaid bills or late payments, or even had to deal with a short sale, we want to help you too. “”Our For the People® Credit Approval Process” matches the buyer with the bank that’s most likely to approve your loan. It’s a fast and easy process that we work every day to prefect. Our goal is 100% approval! “Don’t despair if you’ve struggled in the past. We are here to help. You won’t get coal in your stocking from us. We’re stuffing stockings with the keys to a nicer, newer car.”
Regifting Feels Good Give your old car to someone else and make room for something nicer. Regifting is not only good for you, it’s good for the people who receive your old car too. There are thousands of people out there looking for quality used cars. Your old car may be just what they’re dreaming of this holiday season. Park Chrysler Jeep’s For The People® Vehicle Refinance System can help you stop driving a car you hate, even if you owe more than it’s worth, even if you still have payments on your lease or loan. It doesn’t matter whether you owe $2,000 or $4,000 more than your car is worth right now . Short used car inventory supply has made the demand for used cars, like yours, higher than normal. Increasing demand means increasing value, so right now may be the best time to trade-in for a nicer, newer car. So “regift” it! An put a nicer, newer car under your tree. “I believe everyone deserves to drive a nicer, newer car and that no one should drive a car they hate. It’s my mission in life to help people drive something they love,” explains Jonathan Dworski. “It’s the holidays. Treat yourself and help someone else at the same time. My Ultimate Regift Exchange Sale can help you do it.”
The Regifting Opportunity Will Not Last The Ultimate Regift Exchange Sale is only going on until January 2, 2012 or until the regifting fund runs dry . Dworski’s told us that he can only do so many of these regifting deals. Holiday shopping is expensive and so is regifting all these cars. You’ll need to act quickly to get in on this special, limited time holiday promotion. To reserve your nicer, newer car and regift your old car even if you’re still making payments contact Park Chrysler Jeep at 1-800-513-3470 or visit 1408 W. Hwy 13, Burnsville, MN
