Anyone waiting for a Goodwill thrift store to open in Lakeville or in a surrounding community needn’t wait much longer. Goodwill-Easter Seals Minnesota plans to open its 25th retail store in Lakeville, with an anticipated completion date of January 2012. The 20,000-squarefoot building will be located at 17625 Kenrick Ave. In keeping with Goodwill’s historical mission of providing innovative programs and services that promote economic self-sufficiency for those who are disadvantaged or disabled, the new store will be no different. “Each Goodwill store … offers on-the-job training and skills development for participants while providing quality goods at remarkable prices,” said Lisa Ritter, marketing director. Riiter said the net revenue from all of Goodwill’s stores help fund training programs that help put people to work. For Lakeville, the new store will provide dozens of jobs in addition to its services. “The other thing, too, that benefits Lakeville is the that we will be

The first Saturday of every month, the Buzz Coffee & Café, 411 W. Burnsville Parkway, hosts open mic night for beginners to accomplished artisans to showcase their talents. But the evening is far from a competition and more of a sense of community. Owner Liz Kohagen started the open mic night this past February to honor her mother who had passed away the month prior. Kohagen said her mother came up with the idea and had urged her to implement the concept at her business many times. “It was a way for me to honor her memory and make the leap,” she said. “I’m overwhelmed by the response.” Hosting live music was not an entirely new concept for Kohagen’s business, so finding a few people to get the ball rolling came easy. “I had a few musicians who had played here before,” Kohagen said. “It varied. It wasn’t a regular schedule.” The business owner of more than two

COMMUNITY BRIEFS Deer hunting deadline application approaching for county parks Hunters who wish to participate in controlled deer hunts at Dakota County Parks must submit an application to the County by Monday, Oct. 10. Applications are available online at dakotacounty.us, search hunting. Archery hunts are scheduled at various hours and dates in Lebanon Hills Regional Park and in the western section of Spring Lake Park Reserve. Lebanon Hills Regional Park will be closed until noon on Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays, Oct. 31 through Nov. 16. The western portion of Spring Lake Park Reserve will be closed all day on Nov. 5–7, 11–13, and 19–21. A shotgun hunt will be held Nov. 1927 at Miesville Ravine Park Reserve. The park will be closed during this time. Controlling deer populations supports natural reforestation and reduces damage to nearby agricultural crops and landscaping. Lower deer populations also improve park habitat for other wildlife that benefit from diverse plant life. Residents also benefit from fewer deer-car collisions and the potential

PUBLIC SAFETY BV, Savage police investigating recent residential burglaries Burnsville police responded to the report of a burglary of a residence in the 13700 block of Wellington Crescent Thursday, July 6, at approximately 2 a.m. in Burnsville. An adult female was awakened by an unknown suspect who was opening her bedroom door. The victim was sleeping in a downstairs bedroom at the time of this incident. The only description given was the silhouette of a person standing in the doorway. It was determined by investigating officers that the suspect cut the screen of an open window in the lower level of the residence to make entry into the house. Upon the victim’s waking, the suspect immediately fled the residence. Officers conducted a thorough search of the area with the assistance of a K-9 from the Dakota County Sheriff ’s Office, which was unsuccessful in locating the suspect. This incident is similar in nature to two other recent burglaries being investigated by the Savage Police Department, according to officials with the Burnsville

police. Investigators from both law enforcement agencies are working together to determine if the same suspect committed the crimes. According to police, incidents of this nature – breaking into houses that are occupied – are rare, and the personal safety of citizens is the primary concern of Burnsville and Savage police. Officials with both departments encourage residents to make sure all doors and windows are closed and locked when sleeping or if a residence is left unattended. Should any residents see any suspicious or criminal activity occurring in their neighborhood, they should call 911. Anyone with information about this recent burglary, or any other similar incident, is asked to call the Burnsville Police Department at 952-895-4585.

Dumb criminal arrested for false information, warrant for arrest Lakeville Police Officer Shawn McMahon stopped a vehicle for speeding recently. After stopping the vehicle, the driver

gave McMahon a false name, but the officer discovered the deception when the driver said that he did not have his driver’s license with him and gave two different birth dates. Following a lengthy discussion, the driver admitted to McMahon that the reason he gave a false name was because he had a warrant for his arrest out of Hennepin County. McMahon arrested the driver for the warrant and the traffic violations. The driver will now also be facing the additional gross misdemeanor charges of providing a false name to a police officer.

LV Fire Department leads national 9/11 firefighter memorial The Lakeville Fire Department has implemented a unique memorial honoring the 343 firefighters and first responders who perished 10 years ago in New York City on Sept. 11, 2001. This memorial program was initiated by and coordinated through the Lakeville Fire Department and is being instituted by fire departments across the

country. To mark the 10th anniversary of 9/11, the LFD will be ringing the bell and sounding sirens at Station No. 1 at 8:58 a.m. Sunday, Sept. 11, to commemorate the time the first tower fell, and again at noon for a moment of remembrance and resilience.

Lakeville fire reports From Aug. 28 to Sept. 4 the Lakeville Fire Department responded to 20 calls for service: one brush fire, one cooking fire, one passenger vehicle fire, one outside rubbish fire, one mutual aid to Burnsville for a landfill fire, one gas spill, one smoke removal, two medicals, five false alarms and six good intents. Fire prevention tip Annual fall maintenance checks could save a life this winter. The LFD encourages residents to schedule an annual home furnace inspection with your heating company.

During the inspection, the technician will ensure that your furnace does not leak deadly carbon monoxide gas and that the unit is safe to use. Department members also advise residents to keep the area around their furnaces clear of flammable items.

Thank you for the opportunity to lead LAPS BY DR. LISA SNYDER LAPS SUPERINTENDENT I want to thank you again for the opportunity you have given me. I understand that you have made a great investment in me and in turn, my husband and I will invest in the Lakeville community. I believe in time, you will find that you made a quality investment. I also want to thank you for your trust and support as I get up to speed in this new position. I began my work as superintendent just a few weeks ago, and during that time I have had the great pleasure of meeting with many students, staff, parents, and other members of the community. The reception I have received from everyone I have met has been wonderful, and for that, I am very appreciative. What I have learned about this district as a result of the many conversations I have had over the last few weeks only confirms what I first came to understand about Lakeville Area Public Schools during the interview process — that this is an outstanding school district in a terrific community. As a newcomer, one of the things that really struck me when I spoke with students, parents and other community members is the feeling of pride they have in their schools. That pride –that feeling of ownership – is critical to the success of any

school district and it is what makes this school district thrive. I believe there are many reasons for community members to be proud. We have caring administrators, teachers and support staff, safe schools, incredible opportunities for students and a commitment to the very best educational practices. From our outstanding and dedicated staff, to our committed parents and community partners to our high achieving students, whose success in the classroom is matched by achievements on the athletic fields, in the fine arts auditoriums and in the community, we have a lot to be proud of ! But as with nearly every other school district in the state, Lakeville Area Public Schools will face a number of critical challenges in the coming years. The district’s uncertainty around enrollment and growth, our difficult economy and even unforeseen challenges only increases the pressure on our district. So while we have much to be proud of, we also have good reason for concern. This board and this community had to make some very difficult decisions this past year. These are the types of decisions that too often divide communities, that pit one group against another. We simply can’t let that happen. The bottom line is that in these difficult times it is going to take all of us – this entire dis-

trict community – working together in support of our shared values and our vision for the future. Much of my work as superintendent will be directed toward that goal. As part of my transition plan, I will be meeting directly with members of the community to better understand their challenges and concerns. In addition to meeting parents at beginningof-the-year events and throughout the school year, I intend to meet community members at meetings of local service clubs and other meetings and community events. I will also invite community members to call me, to meet with me, and I will seek opportunities, both formal and informal, to speak to, and even more importantly, to listen to community members. Even though I’ll implement other things, such as community newsletters, a superintendent’s blog and more active use of our district’s Facebook page to better inform community members, that alone is not my goal. Certainly we must inform, but even more importantly, I intend to engage our community members in the challenges and opportunities of their school district. With that, we will provide community members with meaningful opportunities to understand our challenges, to weigh different options and be able to inform

us with their thoughts and suggestions. To that end, I will provide opportunities for community listening sessions, community conversations and engagement opportunities to share and receive information from community stakeholders. This will be our opportunity to be completely transparent in our efforts and for community members to sink their teeth into the difficult budget challenges we face in our district and our state. Similarly, we will seek opportunities to connect people with their schools. That may be as simple as encouraging community members – even those who do not have children attending the schools – to tour the schools that their tax dollars are invested in. It also means promoting volunteer opportunities in an effort to make use of the tremendous talents of our community members. The message will be loud and clear to community members: we want your opinions, we want your suggestions, we want you to be involved in and proud of your schools. But just as I intend to connect with community members, I also understand that staff culture is a critical component of educational success, so I will look for opportunities to engage our terrific staff in a collective vision and direction for our schools.

Wayfinding signs completed for Lakeville trail system Signs provide useful information to promote trail use and healthy living for area residents BY MICHAEL RICCI • SUN NEWSPAPERS The city of Lakeville is home to many who actively participate in walking, running and biking, but a county survey showed they had questions and concerns about the trails. Now, however, city and county officials hope these can be put to rest with the completion of a series of wayfinding trail signs posted along several Lakeville city trails. In connection with the third annual Pedal the Parks event, an official wayfinding trail system ribbon-cutting ceremony will be 9:30 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 24, Pioneer Plaza, 20801 Holyoke Ave, Lakeville. “There are actually four sections of wayfinding we did. We started the first one about two years ago,” said Steve Michaud, parks and recreation director. According to Michaud, the Lakeville Rotary Club funded the project for that particular part of the trail system. “The next one we did was what’s called the Ipava Avenue corridor,” he said. “That starts at Antlers Park and goes up Ipava Avenue. It shows several big loop systems all along that corridor.” Specific locations for signs exist along the trail providing useful information, such as where a person is on a trail and what the distances are to other locations, according to Michaud. He added that the signs provide information related to calories burned compared with distance walked. The purpose of the wayfinding system, which was completed in parts, began about two years ago and continued each year since. “I think we put the rotary one in 2009, and then we did Ipava Avenue in 2010, and portions of the other two in late 2010 and finished it in 2011,” he said. The purpose of installing the signs, according to Michaud, was first and

foremost to provide information to the community about the benefits of walking, biking and jogging. The wayfinding trail system also provides users with trail access to various locations in the city. “They connect all the parks and all the schools. They’re all interconnected,” Michaud said. Dakota County Public Health Department Health Promotion Supervisor Mary Montagne said the joint project between the city and the county began with connections to a group called Active Living Dakota County, and she expanded on its purpose of the system. “The whole purpose of that is to encourage people to integrate physical activity as part of their daily routine,” she said. Montagne commented on efforts by county officials to acquire feedback about the trail system, saying it was a very interesting method. “Our evaluation firm, the Improve Group, I thought they were very creative,” Montagne said. “They put a sign up on the wayfinding signs in October 2010. They posted these signs, near these wayfinding signs, asking users to take a survey.” Of those who responded to the survey, 86 percent said that having the signs available has helped them to have a healthier lifestyle. “The signs let you know the trails are okay to be on and where it goes,” Montagne said. “One respondent mentioned that sometimes people don’t know if it’s okay to go on a trail because they don’t know if they are private or not.” Montagne continued by saying the signs help runners with their training because they can determine how far they have gone, and they can plan new routes based on the distance. Since the project started, there has been some overlapping of county and state initiatives that included the Minnesota Department of Health’s statewide health improvement program, known as SHIP. The program had similar goals, and its whole purpose is to reduce childhood obesity by targeting the three biggest contributing factors to disease. “That provided additional resources for Active Living. And we were able to use some of that SHIP funding to pay

EDUCATION Downtown Lakeville homecoming parade set for Sept. 15 Students of Lakeville North and South high schools will be celebrating an early homecoming 6 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 15th. As part of its Third Thursdays on Main event series, the Downtown Lakeville Business Association is sponsoring a homecoming celebration titled Pants on Parade. The event is co-sponsored by Erickson Ben Franklin. The parade will begin at the Lakeville Area Arts Center and will proceed down Holyoke Avenue to 207th Street. Burnsville flushing city-owned fire hydrants Sept. 26 Crews with the Burnsville Utilities Department will begin flushing city-

owned fire hydrants in cul-de-sacs and non-looped water mains Monday, Sept. 26, with an anticipated completion date of Friday, Oct. 14. Crews will be flushing hydrants from 4 a.m. to 6 p.m. MondayFriday, and may include weekends, weather permitting. City hydrants are flushed on a regular basis to ensure they are working properly for fire protection and to remove mineral deposits that accumulate in water mains. The change in water flow patterns caused by hydrant flushing may stir up mineral deposits in city water mains. “During hydrant flushing, it is not unusual for residents to periodically experience discolored water, pressure changes and/or an increased chlorine odor,” it read in a city press release. “Iron in the water is not a health issue, but it may impact the aesthetic quality of the water.” If discolored water is present, residents may correct the problem by opening all cold-water faucets and allow them to run at the same time until the water clears. “During the hydrant-flushing period, residents are also encouraged to check the color of their water prior to doing laundry,” the release read. “Discolored water may stain clothes, particularly whites.” Rust remover is available from the Burnsville Maintenance Facility, 13713 Frontier Court, for residents whose laundry has become discolored as a result of hydrant flushing. Private hydrant flushing and maintenance for commercial buildings, townhouse associations and apartment complexes is the responsibility of the owner, and must be coordinated with Burnsville’s utilities superintendent to ensure minimal disturbance to the city’s water distribution system. But she would be the first to admit that the evening would not have achieved the same level of success if it were not for the volunteer service of Heatherlyn Hamilton-Chronis and her husband, Jason. She is acoustic singer and song artist with three musical releases, while he has a degree in media communications and has worked in the industry for 15 years. “They are really great at creating a sense of community and being supportive of other artists,” Kohagen said. “They are very welcoming when people walk in the door.” She added that they go around and encourage people to perform, a number that has risen since February. “It’s a great mix of people who come back and new people, which I think is

important,” Kohagen said. “The whole idea is to showcase the local talent we have here. I think there are a lot of talented individuals in our community.” Kohagen continued by saying the evening provides performers with an outlet to demonstrate their skills and artistry, as well as to create a strong artistic community. Like most musicians who play the Buzz, Thomas Lightfoot falls into the adult contemporary genre and has been helpful in promoting open mic night by playing regularly, opening the night almost always. “I’ve made it to all of them, and usually I’m the first,” he said of what typically is a 10-15 minute performance. The resident of Savage has been playing the acoustic guitar for more than 12 years and was taught his talent by his father. “I can read music, but normally I just go by ear,” Lightfoot said. Jason Hamilton-Chronis has seen Lightfoot perform many times and praised the aspiring musician for the depth and soul of his original songs, which consist of half of what Lightfoot plays when performing.

“I just enjoy playing, whether it is in front of one or 100,” Lightfoot said. Quick to deflect attention from himself, however, Lightfoot spoke highly of another artist, Cassandra Sabol, who played the Buzz the evening of Sept. 3. “She takes covers and makes them original in her own way,” he said. “She has surpassed many people who are older.” Sabol, a sophomore at Burnsville High School, has sung in church and school choirs for the past six or seven years, she said, in addition to playing the acoustic guitar for the past year with no formal lessons. “I do a mix of covers and originals,” Cassandra said. “I feel like all of my songs are pretty different.” Cassandra has been performing at the Buzz since last fall and has seen herself the growth in the open mic night’s popularity. “Usually it was not very many people, but no it’s usually packed,” she said. Among those in the crown that particular evening were several members of Cassandra’s family. For some, it was the first time seeing her perform in public. They included her grandparents who trav-

LV-based therapeutic horse riding ranch nearing 15 years Riding therapy for special needs children, military veterans BY MICHAEL RICCI • SUN NEWSPAPERS Unlike most forms of physical therapy that are often routine and boring, a Lakeville-based organization has been offering a form that seems to keep clients coming back year after year. Majestic Hills Ranch, 24580 Dakota Ave., in Lakeville, has been offering therapeutic horseback riding for children and young adults with special needs since 1997. Its mission has been to provide these people with an opportunity to acquire a sense of freedom and accomplishment, in addition to increasing their self-esteem while providing hope for their families. In 2010, however, MHR added a second arena, which led to the creation of the organization’s “Heroes on Horseback” program for military veterans. “Majestic Hills Ranch has made the commitment to bring these same benefits to our veterans who have sacrificed so much to keep us safe,” MHR’s website read. “It is a small way of helping repay them for all they have given and all they have lost.” According to Kris Zieska, the childrens program director, the benefits of therapeutic riding help in more way than one. “The rhythmical movements of a horse walking helps the body in a lot of ways,” Zieska said. “Basically, sitting on a horse while it’s walking helps the mind start regulating better because it’s a very rhythmical beat. It helps [a person’s] brain regulate sequences.” Zieska said it is a form of therapy that has been around for decades, first originating across the Atlantic Ocean. “Therapeutic riding has been around since the ’60s,” Zieska said. “It started

Typically, riders attend once a week for an hour-long ride. “It depends for our children. We tend

to start in May and go through October,” Zieska said. “Some riders do all six months. Some riders do only the summer months, which is about 12 weeks.” For veterans who attend the ranch for therapy, the frequency is much different due to their ailments and other

According to not only Zieska, but also Luann Kane, whose son Ryan has been attending MHR for nearly 10 years, the benefits do apply in everyday life. “It helps with walking. It helps with coordination. It helps with balance,” Kane said. “It helps with a wide variety of things – social, reaching and grabbing things.” But Kane was quick to add the riding is just one of several therapeutic approaches that she is providing for her son, who has cerebral palsy. His other therapies include general therapy, physical therapy, speech therapy, water therapy, and occupational therapy. “It’s one piece that incorporates and build on what else you’re doing. It’s one hour a week or two hours a week just during the summer,” Kane said. “That builds on the stuff you work on in all

other therapies.” Since the age of 2, when Ryan began riding therapy, Kane said her son has made a great deal of progress with all therapies complementing one another. “When he first started, he could not maintain a sitting position on the horse,” Kane said. “Compared with when he started, he has way better body control and balance when the horse is moving.” She added that her son very much enjoys the ranch, and as long as he continues to enjoy it, he will continue to attend. Individuals at the ranch may have such ailments as cerebral palsy, muscular dystrophy, Down’s syndrome, cancer, autism, ADHD/ADD, paraplegic disabilities, post traumatic stress disorder, and a brain injury or head trauma, while others may be amputees. According to Kris Zieska, MHR is run by two full-time and one part-time employee, equating to a need for volunteers to assist throughout the duration of the ranch’s seasons. “Only two-and-a-half people who are paid,” Zieska said. “The rest are volunteers. New MyPlate campaign promotes health eating BY ROXI REJALI – CONTRIBUTING WRITER Icons are everywhere: recycling symbols, smiley faces, the Apple logo. Add another icon to the list: MyPlate. It’s a new symbol to remind Americans to make healthy eating choices. MyPlate shows a dinner setting of a cup and plate divided into sections representing the major food groups of fruits, vegetables, grains, protein and dairy products. The campaign was launched in June by First Lady Michelle Obama and pairs with her ongoing Let’s Move program to increase Americans’ physical activity. Both plans are designed to combat rising rates of overweight and obesity among adults and children. The U.S. Department of Agriculture

(USDA) developed MyPlate as an easy-tounderstand way to think about building a healthy plate at mealtimes. The colorful ChooseMyPlate.gov website has recipes, sample menus and inter-

active daily food plans that calculate food requirements based on age, gender, height, weight and activity levels. You’ll also find information sheets with useful tips on topics like ways to cut back on salt and sodium, reduce kids’ sugary snacks and creative ways to add fruits and vegetables to any diet. The new plate symbol replaces the familiar pyramid icon representing the food groups, introduced in 1992. USDA research says that Americans are confused by dietary guidelines that often seem to contradict each other. The new campaign is based on findings from the USDA’s 2010 Dietary Guidelines for Americans, which emphasized reducing calories and increasing physical activity to maintain a healthy weight. While the MyPlate image may be new,

the basic rules of good health don’t appear to have changed much. The following healthy-eating guidelines are borrowed from MyPlate.gov material: • Enjoy your food, but eat less. • Avoid oversized portions. • Make half your plate fruits and vegetables. • Make at least half your grains whole grains. • Switch to fat-free or low-fat (one-percent) milk. • Compare sodium in foods like soup, bread, and frozen meals and choose the foods with lower numbers. • Drink water instead of sugary drinks. Family mealtime helps children develop into productive students and adults, according to a senior clinical psychologist at American Family Children’s Hospital. “It’s well documented that children in families that eat dinner together develop social skills, strengthen family bonds, do better in school, and engage in less risky behaviors such as drug and alcohol abuse,” says Dr. Stephanie Farrell. “Scheduling regular family dinners is one tactic to assure we take the time to slow down from the hustle and bustle of our lives and be present with our children.” “Family mealtimes provide children

with stability and a safe environment in a world that is far too often fraught with confusion and pain.” But with kids trying to stay faithful to a schedule involving ballet lessons, soccer practice, and study time for tomorrow’s big test, how can regular family dinners be possible? “Start out realistically, even if it means just scheduling one shared meal,” says Farrell. “Keep it simple. The focus is on being together, not a gourmet meal.” Farrell encourages parents to have children help prepare the meal to give them a sense of responsibility, pride and accomplishment, while at the same time, enhancing their self-esteem. “Any help in the kitchen should be praised, so everyone’s efforts are

acknowledged and will likely be repeated in the future,” she says. “Additionally, when children are involved in the planning and preparation of healthy and nutritious food choices, they are more likely to eat the food, a bonus given the alarming rise in childhood obesity.” Farrell says when the meal is served, conversation among family members should be the focus and technology should be banned. “No television, no answering the phone, and no texting,” she says. “This will allow you to actively listen to your children and connect with them. Also, resist the temptation to jump up from the table when you are done eating to begin doing the dishes. No outside boundaries should serve as a distraction.”

Farrell adds that family mealtimes should be enjoyable, fun and relaxing and unpleasant topics or criticisms should be avoided. “It is imperative to take time to laugh,” she says. “Share a joke or an amusing story from the day. This might help children lower their guard that they may have had to keep up throughout the day.” Overall, Farrell says parents who plan family mealtimes are showing just how much their children mean to them. “I cannot think of a more vital message to give our children,” she says. “‘You are the most important part of my life, and I love you unconditionally. We are all busy, but I will always take time to be here for you.’”

MAC School in Eagan opens doors for autistic students School is first in the country to combine behavior management with academic learning BY MATTHEW HANKEY • SUN NEWSPAPERS Though many Twin Cities area schools welcomed students for the first day of school last week, for one it was the first first day of school. The Minnesota Autism School in Eagan opened its doors first year of school Sept. 6 The first of its kind in the country, school, combines the principles of applied behavioral analysis with academic learning, said Executive Director Kathryn Marshall, and strives to educate students on the autistic spectrum in grades 4-12 who possess a wide-range of abilities. “It’s a wonderful opportunity for the kids and staff to give them reinforcement opportunities and I think all the families feel fortunate that their students are here,” said Deb Otto, program supervisor at the MAC School. Applied behavioral analysis relies on trained professionals providing individualized therapy for autistic people. The goal is to reduce the signs and symptoms of autism in a rewards-based setting where children are frequently rewarded for positive responses to the therapists. The Minnesota Autism School provides students an important component they were lacking in a traditional classroom environment – one-on-one individualized instruction. In most schools, there are dozens of students for every one teacher. At the Minnesota Autism School, each student has a behavior therapist, who spends the entire school day with them. The Minnesota Autism Centers in Woodbury and Minnetonka focus solely on reinforcing ABA principles. “The MAC program provides direct intensive therapy,” Marshall said. “Here, we hope children are learning about math, science and social studies.” In Minnesota, one in 67 children are diagnosed with autism. “With the increase of the rate of autism, so many kids require a behavior component to their day,” said Marshall. “It combines academics with a behavior program.” “Perhaps one child’s issue is compliance. Another’s could be a language delay. Those behavioral pieces can be dealt with by a professional here and then allow that child to be dealt with academically.” The school currently has 65 students, with the goal of reaching a total enroll-

That goal is dependent on hiring qualified staff, said Marshall. Applicants must have college degrees in a related science to health care, such as psychology or sociology. An unforeseen benefit of the school is having dozens of health care professionals under one roof, Otto said. “Allowing all of them to share that expertise with each other will be really good, too,” she said. The school is housed in the former Tesseract School in Eagan, a 40,000-squarefoot building that was completely gutted and re-modeled with new carpets, walls and paint this summer. “We’re thrilled with the size of the building because it allows for the therapeutic reinforcement of our students,” Marshall said. “It works great. We have a large outdoor play area, a gymnasium, music room, library, media room, and a quiet space.” Marshall said the goal is for the students to get the behavior management skills and quality education they would receive at a traditional school. “We’re fans of the public school sys-

tem,” said Marshall. “We’re hopeful the students can acquire those skills and then go back to a public school setting. It’s a big job, but we’re here to do it because there are a lot of kids who need a lot of help.” One student enrolled this year is Jake, 8, of Blaine. His mother, Anne Ripka, said she hesitated to take him out of the Spring Lake Park School District, but realized the MAC School would be a place where Jake could thrive. “To get individualized learning and learning at his pace and his ability and giving him the confidence to learn, this was a no-brainer that this was where Jake needed to be,” Ripka said. Ripka worried that Jake would merely “get by” in a traditional school setting. At the MAC school, Jake has a much better chance of succeeding in whatever he chooses to do in life. Jake functions well for a child with autism, but had trouble learning in school because of the auditory nature of how classes are taught. Jake is clearly a visual learner and had behavioral issues related to his struggles keeping up in class. Ripka believes the MAC School will

help increase Jake’s confidence and selfesteem, as well as keep him on par with the academic components that are tailored to his learning style. Ripka said the school made an exception for Jake, who is in third grade, to enroll. “I saw the potential. They all saw the potential in Jake and it just seemed like a team effort to get him to where he needs to be,” said Ripka, referring to Otto, Marshall and Christina Boylen, Jake’s behavior therapist. “This is going to be able to give him the skills to be able to learn and be a functioning part of society.” Ripka doesn’t take for granted the opportunities her son will have at the MAC school. But, she also hopes the school can eventually expand to help so many children who have autism. “We’re very fortunate to have this going on in Minnesota and in our community,” Ripka said. “I hope it gets to the point where we don’t have all these kids on the waiting list. I think what we need to do now is focus on the families and get them the interventions that are needed.” Info: themacschool.org.

The store’s key demographic may be women between the ages of 35 and 54, but Ritter was quick to say this did not mean that the store would provide items only for those in that demographic. “We certainly carry children’s apparel and sporting goods … as well as male apparel,” she said, adding that these were just some examples of a

larger supply of items. Citing what she believes is a key message to communicate to residents, Ritter said the new store is a prototype of all of the organization’s store throughout the area. “It’s a prototype that is something that is designed specifically to meet the needs of our customers,” Ritter said. “If people have misconceptions of a thrift store, this will hopefully [cause] them to think differently about thrift as we really work hard to make the experience amenable to our customers.” Ritter continued, saying that a shopping experience these days at a Goodwill thrift is akin to shopping at a large discount store. “You’re not going into a store with narrow isles. It is a very open platform, and we do have a lot of different types of merchandise.” The Goodwill-Easter Seals Minnesota organization also plans to soon open two other locations, one in Blaine that is set to open this month and one Goodwill-Easter Seals Minnesota plans to open its 25th Goodwill store location at 17625 Kenrick Ave, Lakeville, with an in Champlin that is set to open anticipated completion date of January 2012. pleaded guilty to one count of manslaughter in the second degree in connection with the shooting death of James Edward Koenig, 38, of Burnsville, Jan. 23, 2011, in Thomas’s home. Thomas was indicted Feb. 25, 2011, by a Dakota County grand jury of one count each of murder in the second degree (while committing a felony),

manslaughter in the second degree, intentional discharge of a firearm and endangering another, and reckless discharge of a firearm in a municipality, all of which are felonies. Judge Timothy McManus ordered a pre-sentence investigation and set the sentencing date for 9 a.m. Oct. 27, in Hastings.

BY MIKE SHAUGHNESSY • SUN NEWSPAPERS Rosemount football coach Jeff Erdmann said he wasn’t expecting his team to win in a blowout. With his team and Burnsville both fielding a lot of new starters, he wasn’t sure what to expect. “We’re playing a lot of guys who are inexperienced, especially on the line, and Burnsville is in the same boat,” Erdmann said. “I thought we were pretty even as far as experience.” So why did the scoreboard show a 31point difference between the teams? Rosemount cruised to a 38-7 home-field victory in a Sept. 9 South Suburban Conference game. Rosemount hasn’t had a losing season since 2004, while Burnsville is seeking its first winning season since 2006. If a team’s confidence is fragile – as might be the case with the Blaze – it doesn’t help to see the opponent score on its first play from scrimmage. And that’s what happened when Rosemount quarterback Nate Lemoine ran untouched 65 yards for a touchdown that sent the Irish off to the races. Rosemount (2-0) led 24-0 by halftime, and Burnsville (0-2) didn’t get on the scoreboard until seven seconds remained. “Their athletes made plays, and we made too many mistakes,” Burnsville coach Tyler Krebs said. “We did some good things, but when you give up a 65-yard touchdown on the first play of the game, that’s a tough way to start. “And this is a tough conference. We don’t get to play pre-season games, so we have a short time to get ready.” With a new head coach and mostly new staff, Burnsville expected some growing pains. Rosemount, coming off a Prep Bowl appearance in 2010, expects to find out how good it really is over the next three weeks, when it plays Prior Lake, Lakeville North

In the third quarter, Lemoine threw a 22-yard touchdown pass to Charlie Broback. A blocked punt led to a 4-yard touchdown run by Corey Narveson in the fourth quarter. Burnsville’s touchdown came late in the fourth quarter on Ben Gillies’ 4-yard run. Burnsville, which was outgained 321139, crossed midfield only on its first and final possessions. Junior running back Jamond Bailey led the Blaze in rushing with 41 yards on five carries. The Blaze will go back to practice looking simply to improve, Krebs said. “Our offense moved the ball at times.

Lakeville South was all smiles after winning the Aerie Challenge volleyball tournament, to the point where the Cougars could tease a couple of their players. When it came time to claim the firstplace trophy, South coach Jennifer Nelson told “the captains – all my seniors!” to go get it. That left the two non-seniors on the varsity roster, sisters Jazzmyn and Jade Tingelhoff, standing off to the side, wondering what they were supposed to do. After a couple seconds of silence, everyone laughed and waved them over to have their picture taken with the trophy. But now the serious business begins. Lakeville South, ranked fifth in Class 3A, began the South Suburban Conference schedule Sept. 13 against Burnsville. On Thursday, Sept. 15, they play at No. 2ranked and defending state champion Lakeville North at 7 p.m. “We have eight seniors and two underclassmen,” Nelson said. “Many of them played together in the off-season. It’s nice to come into this season with some chemistry.” The chemistry has translated into a fast start. Four victories at the Aerie Challenge in Apple Valley the weekend of Sept. 9-10 ran South’s record to 8-0. The Cougars dropped just one game in those eight matches. Allie Mosser, the Cougars’ libero, said having a large number of seniors has helped early in the season. “There have been times when we’ve gone on a streak and the other team couldn’t respond,” Mosser said. “You could definitely tell that our chemistry was an advantage.”

He rushed for 110 yards – all in the first half – and one touchdown, and completed five of nine passes for 107 yards and two scores. The opening touchdown was a simple quarterback keeper, a staple of Rosemount’s veer-option offense. “The same play we’ve been running for six years,” Erdmann said. Heller had six catches for 118 yards. Lakeville South, ranked fourth in Class 5A, will play Apple Valley at 7 p.m. Friday, Sept. 16. The game is scheduled to be played on the Lakeville South stadium field, which has been closed for more than three weeks after school officials declared it unplayable. Portions of the field were re-sodded.

LV North 45, AV 19 A multifaceted Lakeville North offense put up 41 points, and the Panthers also chipped in two safeties in their Sept. 9 victory at Apple Valley. Trey Heid passed for more than 220 yards for the second consecutive game, and Brandon Morgan rushed for two scores for the Panthers, 2-0 and ranked seventh in Class 5A. Morgan scored on runs of 6 and 4 yards. Heid threw touchdown passes of 5 yards to Brett Rasmussen and 71 yards to Joel Oxton. Zach Creighton scored North’s final touchdown on a 40-yard run. Heid also added two field goals and five extra points. The Panthers led 19-0 in the second quarter before the Eagles got on the board on a 6-yard touchdown run by Matt Thomas. Apple Valley (0-2) had two touchdown passes in the fourth quarter. Mitch Hechsel scored on a 23-yard pass from Thomas, and sophomore Tommy Singer threw a 58-yard pass to Dustin Fronk for the final touchdown. Lakeville’s annual high school cross country meet has attracted a strong field, especially on the girls side. In addition to second-ranked South, No. 4 Andover, No. 5 Prior Lake and No. 8 Eagan are other schools from the Class AA state rankings entered in the race. Varsity races at the Apple Jack Invitational at Aronson Park begin at 5:05 p.m. for boys and 5:35 for girls. Lakeville South’s girls are coming off a victory at the Bauman/Rovn Invitational on Sept. 8 in Minnetrista, where the Cougars placed three runners in the top six. Ninth-grader Kaytlyn Larson was second in 15 minutes, 10.7 seconds (for 4,000 meters). Annie Brekken, also a ninthgrader, was fourth in 15:13.7. Megan Kilbride, a senior, finished sixth in 15:17.8. They led Lakeville South to victory in the team competition. The Cougars finished 26 points ahead of second-place Eden Prairie. Turner (Minnesota-Duluth), Kaitlin VanWinkle (Minnesota State, Moorhead) and McKell Anderson (Southwest Minnesota State) have committed to college programs.

Lakeville South also won the boys team championship at the Dakota Classic, finishing 14 points ahead of Apple Valley. Cougars senior Mark Honetschlager finished fourth in the 3,200-meter race in 10:46.1. Lakeville North also sends its boys and girls teams to the Apple Jack Invitational. The Panthers ran last week at the Faribault Invitational, where the girls team placed third. North was sixth in the boys team competition. Lakeville North senior Emma Johnson was third in the 4K race in Faribault, finishing in 15:11.5. Senior Ben Saxton was the boys team’s top runner, finishing 12th in the 5K race in 16:40.4.

AV girls win in Faribault Apple Valley won a close four-way race for the girls championship at the Faribault Invitational on Sept. 9. The Eagles scored 98 points, two fewer than Stillwater, which went into the meet ranked 12th in Class AA. Seniors Abbey Singleton (sixth, 15:19.1), Alexa Nelson (10th, 15:41.7) and Natalie Webb (18th, 15:58.7) finished among the top 20 individuals in the 4K race, as did junior Meredith Jones (20th, 16:03.2). Shanni Moorse (44th), Madison Ihrke (81st) and Camille Sjoquist (88th) Jazzmyn Tingelhoff, a junior, is helping the offense run smoothly as the Cougars’ setter. Lakeville South finished second in the Aerie Challenge last season, losing to Apple Valley in the championship match. The host Eagles finished fourth in this year’s tournament. For the Cougars, whose volleyball tradition only dates to 2005, the Aerie Challenge might be the biggest regularseason tournament they’ve ever won. “Yeah, I think so,” Mosser said. “Especially after we finished second here last year. We really wanted to win it this time.” Now the Cougars dive into the South Suburban schedule. Four teams from the conference – Bloomington Jefferson (first), Lakeville North (second), Lakeville South (fifth) and Eagan (10th) were ranked in the top 10 in Class 3A last week by the state coaches association. Referring to the upcoming conference schedule, Nelson said, “it’s going to be a bloodbath.”

Cross country notes • Apple Valley was second in the boys meet and third in the girls race at the Dakota Classic on Sept. 2. “Our mostly young and inexperienced kids competed well,” said Apple Valley boys coach Rollie Greeno, whose team finished 14 points behind Lakeville South. Junior Nick Hughes (10:45.9 for 2K) finished third in the Dakota Classic. Senior Alex Brandel (11:08.5) finished ninth and sophomore Jack Crippes (11:08.5) was 13th. • Burnsville senior Cole O’Brien, last year’s state Class AA individual runnerup, was fourth in last week’s state rankings. He won the season-opening Minneapolis South Invitational on Sept. 1 at St. Catherine’s, finishing the 5K race in 17:30. The Blaze’s Abdul Salan was second in 17:37. Erik Kollasch, Erik Lindstrom, Shawn Wong and Matt Connelly finished seventh through 10th as Burnsville won the team championship. Burnsville also went to the Marshfield (Wis.) Invitational on Sept. 3, finishing 12th individually. O’Brien was fourth individually. • Burnsville ninth-grader Vivian Hett won the girls race at the Minneapolis South Invitational. She had a 4K time of 16:01. The Blaze’s Rissa Lane, a junior, placed sixth. Hett finished seventh in the Faribault Invitational on Sept. 9, with ninth-grader Jane Koch placing 11th.

North wins in Marshall Anybody who thought the changes in coaches and personnel would make Lakeville North take a step back might have to reconsider. The Panthers, ranked second in Class 3A last week, won their first seven matches and did not drop a game. And they probably won’t be No. 2 in the state rankings for long after beating No. 1-ranked Bloomington Jefferson in the Southwest Minnesota Challenge in Marshall. Lakeville North, which won the tournament for the second consecutive year, defeated the first- and third-ranked teams in Class 3A as well as the fifthranked team in Class 2A. The Panthers defeated Marshall 25-21, 25-14 in the third match, Wayzata 25-20, 27-25 in their fourth match and Jefferson 25-16, 25-23 in the final. Lakeville North will play host to Lakeville South, ranked fifth in Class 3A, at 7 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 15.

Growing pains evident with Eagles boys soccer Two-time defending state champs 4-2-1 through first 7 games BY MIKE SHAUGHNESSY • SUN NEWSPAPERS Apple Valley doesn’t have a lot of experience with bouncing back from losses, and it’s a skill the Eagles would just as soon not have to learn. But even a soccer program as accomplished as Apple Valley’s can’t be dominant every year. This year the Eagles are finding their way with a new cast of characters. “I still think we have a lot of potential,” senior captain Derek Smith said after the Eagles lost 2-0 to Bloomington Jefferson on Sept. 8 in the Challenge Cup semifinals at the National Sports Center in Blaine. “Our last game [a scoreless tie against Lakeville North], I think we had most of the play. This game [against Jefferson], the shots were 10-10. “We have good players. We just need to keep working hard.” The Eagles, 10th in last week’s state Class AA rankings, were 4-2-1 overall after defeating Mankato East 4-3 in the Challenge Cup third-place game Sept. 10. Apple Valley’s state-record 48-game winning streak ended with a 2-1 overtime loss to Holy Family on Aug. 29. Jefferson was the first conference opponent to defeat the Eagles since 2008, when they were members of the Lake Conference. Apple Valley coach Chuck Scanlon also said he thought the Eagles had the better of the play against Lakeville North, a team that was 4-0-2 going into this week’s play. Jefferson controlled play early in the Challenge Cup semifinal, including a sequence in which Jaguar shots hit the crossbar twice within five seconds. Apple Valley steadied itself and had a chance to take the lead with a long-range blast from Sean Lang. But he, too, hit the crossbar. Jefferson scored both of its goals in

the second half. After the Jefferson game, Smith echoed what Scanlon told the team – nothing is seriously wrong, but everybody needs to be a little sharper. Smith said he didn’t believe the Eagles’ success the last two seasons – Apple Valley is two-time defending Class AA champion – was putting undue pressure on this year’s team. Apple Valley returned no starters this year; Smith, who recently returned to midfield after starting the season at sweeper, was a reserve last season. “We watched those guys the last two years and we’ve been waiting for our chance,” he said. “But we have to be ready to play every game because all of our games are tough.” After not scoring in its previous two games, Apple Valley’s offense gained some traction against Mankato East. Smith had a goal and two assists. Junior captain Connor Flanagan had a goal and assist. Kyle Levac and Lang also scored. Apple Valley played Rosemount on Sept. 13 and will play host to Prior Lake in a South Suburban Conference game at 5 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 15, at Johnny Cake Ridge Park.

Girls: LV North 7-0 Lakeville North is moving up quickly in the state Class AA girls rankings, which tends to happen when a team wins its first seven games.
