Sen. Michel, Reps. Downey and Mazorol get ready for session BY KATIE MINTZ – SUN NEWSPAPERS Local legislators said this session, with a biennial budget on the books, they hope to focus on other education issues. Sen. Geoff Michel, R-41, Rep. Keith Downey, R-41A, and Rep. Pat Mazorol, R-41B, addressed the Edina School District community Thursday evening, Jan. 5, at the Edina Community Center. “This past legislative session, the total dominating topic was the budget,” said Michel of Edina. According to Michel, more than 40 percent of state funds go to K-12 education, making it the “single biggest slice of the pie.” Because of that, it was also vulnerable as the state addressed a $5 billion deficit last spring, he DIALOGUE: TO PAGE 14

911 dispatch facility recently green-lighted Groundbreaking for structure to be built in Plymouth planned in 2012 BY PAUL WAHL – SUN NEWSPAPERS A proposal to build a new Hennepin County Sheriff ’s Office 911 Emergency Communications Facility in Plymouth has received another 10-4. Hennepin County Commissioners voted Dec. 11 to approve the schematic design for the facility. Initial approval for the work was granted by the county board last November. The 59,200-square-foot facility will be constructed on county owned land near Hennepin County Adult Corrections Facility, 1145 Shenandoah Lane, Plymouth. Groundbreaking is planned in 2012 with completion scheduled for 2014. “When you call 911, our dispatching system must send emergency service without delay,” said Hennepin County Sheriff Rich Stanek. “This is a critical service and we must have the needed infrastructure in order to provide this
communications equipment in fire, police, emergency medical and public works vehicles for agencies across the county. It will also house the Critical Infrastructure Radio and Data Network Center, one of six sites in the state, which hosts the statewide Allied Radio Matrix for Emergency Response system. It was developed to improve communication amongst emergency services during natural and man-made disasters. In July, the county was granted $4.7 million from the state to be used toward funding the Plymouth facility. It was part of a bonding bill approved by the Legislature and signed by the governor. The county had originally requested $30 million. The county has also been seeking federal funding to help pay for a portion of the dispatch center’s cost. A proposal to appropriate $500,000, offered by U.S. Sen. Amy Klobuchar (DMinn.) was eventually defeated. According to records, the county continues to seek $975,000, primarily for technology and equipment. Before the Plymouth location with its communications towers already in place was approved, the county had considered spending $50 million to build at another location.
service in a way that is always reliable and uninterrupted.” The current facility in Golden Valley, which has been in service 64 years, can no longer handle the infrastructure and technology requirements, the sheriff ’s office maintains. The 14,400-square-foot center is one of the largest consolidated public safety answering points in the Upper Midwest. Personnel dispatch for 19 fire departments and 23 police agencies in 36 communities. The center receives 670,000 calls and anticipates an average annual call growth of almost 5 percent – an expected maximum of 750,000 calls going in to 2012. Almost no opposition to the construction proposal was heard when it came before the Plymouth City Council in January. City officials were assured that the facility would generate few additional “lights and sirens” calls. In May the board approved a contract with Wold Architects & Engineers for preparing a schematic design for the facility in an amount not to exceed $302,600. The entire project is budgeted at $33.75 million. In addition to the dispatch center, the building is expected to house the Sheriff ’s Radio Systems Operations and Technical Services. The unit maintains
Hennepin County Administrator Richard Johnson has gone on record saying the project costs would range between $30 million and $40 million. Part of the expense is building a “hardened” structure that can withstand blizzards, tornadoes and even terror attacks, something the Golden Valley facility does not offer. Several emergency services departments have in previous years requested the county take over dispatch responsibilities, including Golden Valley. Sheriff ’s Department spokeswoman Lisa Kiava said that no requests for service were pending. Golden Valley eventually secured dispatch services through Edina Police Department. Golden Valley had been paying $337,0000 annually to contract with St. Louis Park Police Department previously. Plymouth is the largest of the cities served by the county facility, which was answering a phone or radio call every 11 seconds in February 2010. Among municipalities that are served by the communication center are Deephaven, Eden Prairie, Excelsior, Golden Valley, Hopkins, Minneapolis, Minnetonka, Richfield, Shorewood, St. Anthony, St. Louis Park, Tonka Bay and Woodland.

New Edina salon run by expert nitpickers Minnesota Lice Lady in Edina offers head lice removal for customers BY KATIE MINTZ – SUN NEWSPAPERS A new Edina business has lousy customers – a lot of them. Minnesota Lice Lady, located in Edina’s Morningside neighborhood, offers expert head lice removal. Owned by married couple Gonne Asser and Sunil Bawa of St. Paul, the business offers chemical-free lice removal with a 30-day guarantee. Asser, a self-proclaimed nitpicker, said her experience with lice started the same way it does for most parents. Several years ago, two of her three kids came home with a note from school. A friend who’d already tried shampoos said they didn’t work. According to Asser, lice are growing resistant to the pesticides in the products. The friend offered to help comb the bugs and nits out of her children’s hair strand by strand. KAREL SMITH 612-986-3704
In the following seven years, Asser paid the favor forward. She estimates she combed out about 40 of her kids’ classmates and friends’ kids. In fall 2010, after extensive research into the best techniques, she launched Minnesota Lice Lady. After a year of making house calls, she opened the Edina salon, 3940 Sunnyside Road, in September 2011. She said she wants other parents to know that treating lice without a major life disruption is possible. “It’s so hard to get out for people that they struggle for weeks or months to get it out,” Asser said. “You don’t have to feel like lice is going to put you under the bus.” Asser said parents often believe their home must be cleaned top to bottom, with all plush items stowed away in bags, drapes steam cleaned and sofas dismantled for vacuuming. But Asser and Bawa, who were trained in the Shepherd Method of strand-by-strand removal at the Shepherd Institute for Lice Solutions in Florida, said that thorough removal of LICE LADY: TO PAGE 12

‘Boneheaded’ bridal dress destruction or business decision? CURRENT EDINA
Closed Edina bridal shop destroys unsold dresses to much dismay I love a good bargain, part by necessity and part for the thrill. The majority of my closet is filled with decent items scored on the cheap at consignment shops and thrift stores. For me, there’s nothing like flipping through racks of secondhand clothes to discover a $5 Jean

Paul Gaultier sweater someone else bought for at least 100 times the price. Thanks for that one, Arc’s Value Village in Richfield. Usually, delight at my own luck fades to shock – People actually spend this much on a piece of clothing? – then to dismay – And then they get rid of it? – and finally, back around to
gratitude. Well, at least they didn’t just throw it in the trash. So you’d think I’d be especially taken aback by the big story last week that an Edina bridal shop destroyed gowns worth thousands of dollars. All 19 Priscilla of Boston locations across the country, including the 50th and France outpost, closed their doors in the last days of 2011. In Edina, leftover dresses were spray-painted Dec. 30 with big red Xs in public view before being tossed in a Dumpster. I came across the story as it lit up my Twitter feed back at
work from the New Year holiday. Other people were certainly outraged. Links to local media reports were accompanied with messages calling the move “heartless,” “disgusting,” “so, so wasteful,” a “boneheaded corporate decision” and “a bad PR move.” Some said “shame on you,” “this makes me sick,” and “sad they didn’t think of others in need.” I’ll admit, while I’m not in the market for a wedding dress, if I came across a good one for the right price, I might buy it
burning is not the cause of real serious pollution. How many people have been hurt by the air from fires compared to our search for coal, gas and other sources of energy? It is too bad a small group of people are trying to control our ability to have wood-burning fires in Edina. On a crisp fall day, to be able to walk down a street and smell an early wood fire is really enjoyable, and likewise are the fire pits that are set out on Halloween to have neighbors gather around and enjoy the night as children trick-ortreat. These joys should not be disturbed. Growing up on a farm that only used the renewable resource of wood, I believe that practice should be continued. Burning wood, compared to searching for more gas or other energy supplies, is our least harmful activity. Dick Johnson Edina

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Doesn’t like ‘campaign puff pieces’ To the editor: As a 20-year resident of Edina, I often used to receive constituent surveys in the mail from former U.S. Rep. Jim Ramstad. These contained many questions covering various issues of importance and offered space for two residents to reply. They were printed in a plain fashion on white paper, and I took no issue with the fact that they were franked, as they were helping conduct the affairs of the congressman’s district. This stands in stark contrast to the flashy, multicolored pamphlets routinely franked by Rep. Erik Paulsen, which read more like campaign fliers than surveys. The most recent one was over six pages long and contained a survey the
size of a small postcard consisting of three biased questions which only one person could answer. Mr. Paulsen should follow Ramstad’s example and save taxpayers’ money for actual district business instead of franking thinly veiled, lengthy campaign puff pieces. Laura Lehmann Edina
Wood burning not the biggest pollution source To the editor: In the Dec. 22 issue of the Edina Sun-Current, the headline over a letter to the editor, “City council members support dirty air,” was misleading. We all believe in having clean air. Our city council, in my opinion, supports the rights of lots of people. Wood
To the editor: Kudos to the city of Edina and its public works department for the reconstruction of 70th Street between France Avenue and Highway 100. The thoughtful application of bike lanes, sidewalks and well-marked crosswalks – along with car lanes – recognizes the diversity of travel options used by Edina residents and should serve as a model for future roadway developments. The reduction of the speed limit from 30 to 25 mph improves safety for all users, be they in cars, on bikes or on foot. As has been demonstrated in Minneapolis, the investment in multimodal transportation options encourages people to get out of their cars, improving not only their health and that of the environment, but the health our LETTERS: TO PAGE 8

Mintz FROM PREVIOUS PAGE just for the deal. But better yet, as many said, the dresses could have gone to a number of nonprofits that help provide special moments for women in need. Priscilla of Boston parent company David’s Bridal, in statements to media, said the store does donate quality gowns to a variety of charitable causes, but not dresses that are damaged or in poor condition. Later it said contractual agreements with some designer labels prevent them from donating unsold dresses. By the end of the week, after the news made it all the way to “The Today Show,” David’s Bridal released a public apology stating it understood the anger and frustration expressed about the incident. It said it would do better next time. “David’s Bridal has already begun bringing together all of the remaining Priscilla of Boston gowns to evaluate them and ensure that they are donated to our charitable partners wherever possible,” the apology read, in part. But should they have to apologize? I am not condoning the defiling of dresses said to be worth thousands, however, I think there are plenty other areas of waste that go without the same level of
fury. Hotel rooms empty at nightfall aren’t opened to people who could use the shelter. Movies, plays and concerts don’t give away seats still open on the day of the show. Restaurants and bakeries throw out uneaten goods. I sometimes let food in my own fridge go bad even though there are starving children in Africa. I, and probably you, would not do what David’s Bridal did. Really, who thought it was a good idea to blatantly squander something as sentimental as a wedding dress outside in daylight on a Friday in a busy shopping area? But it was their – and the designer labels they work with – business decision to destroy unsold dresses to prevent resale. Apparently, its not uncommon for high-end brands to ruin their goods rather they are offered at a large discount in a dingy bargain basement, cheapening the idea of luxury that many of their customers have bought into. And I guess I can understand that. Imagine if every time you needed a hotel, you stall until the midnight hour when vacant rooms are offered up free, or if you waited to buy that designer dress you covet because you knew inevitably it’d show up at the local outlet. Well, eventually, I’d bet those companies would go out of business for lack of fullpaying customers. And then how would I find my bargains at the thrift store?

Letters FROM PREVIOUS PAGE but there are no potholes and no bumps. These are streets that are perfectly comfortable for driving, biking and walking and the Valley Estates people are happy with their condition. A petition to delay this project was signed by more than 60 percent of the residents and six people spoke at the public hearing against the project giving reasons for delaying it while one gentleman spoke for it. If the street replacement were delayed for three or maybe five years, we would get that many more years of pollution-free service from them. To do the project before it is necessary is environmentally irresponsible. The pollution created by manufacturing asphalt and to have carbon- and smoke-belching machines and trucks at work unnecessarily is not being green. Mayor Jim Hovland and the council are not walking their green talk with this vote to force street replacement on Valley Estates people, who by the way will have to pay the $760,000 cost of the project themselves. Lice Lady FROM PAGE 4 bugs and eggs is enough to clear an infestation. Asser said before she launched the business she spent a lot of time researching and comparing scientific studies. She found that the Centers for Disease Control recommends bagging items for two weeks, but the Harvard School of Public Health said that is unnecessary. After reading many studies, and based on her own experience, she sided with the latter. Asser said that unlike other blood-sucking bugs such as the tick or bedbug, lice can not survive for long off their feeding source. In the last few months, she said she’s seen six cases where one child was heavily affected, but no other family members were because lice do not spread in the environment. She said in as few as 12 hours, lice become so dehydrated that even if they did find a head to feed on, they couldn’t produce the saliva they need to thin their victim’s blood in order to eat. Eggs, called nits, also need the heat and humidity of the head to incubate. Asser said lice spreads by direct hair-

to-hair contact and affects primarily young children and teens. Their heads are close as they share an iPod on the bus or read a book together in the school library, she said. “These cute little pumpkins are climbing all over each other,” Asser said. At Minnesota Lice Lady, each head is sprayed with enzymes and then combed out thoroughly with a professional grade nit comb. A thorough nitpicking comes next as each strand of hair is examined one by one. Then, just to be sure the nits are gone, the Minnesota Lice Lady does a second visual check and a final comb-out. The service costs $80 an hour. Asser said it usually takes 45-90 minutes for boys with short hair and up to three hours for girls. Within a week, clients return for a follow-up visit. An additional two free checks are offered after removal for peace of mind. Service is guaranteed for 30 days, she said. Tara Baker and her daughter Emma, 7, who live just over the Edina border in Minneapolis, were in on Wednesday, Dec. 28, for a follow-up visit. Baker said she heard about Minnesota Lice Lady from other par-
ents at Emma’s Minneapolis school, where several students had head lice. Baker said it’s hard to know as a parent what to do to treat lice. The first time Emma had lice as a 10month-old, she thought it was an ear infection. It took three different doctors to tell her it was head lice. This experience has been different. They came in for their initial visit about a week before for a three-hour removal. “It’s been really good. She hasn’t cried at all,” Baker said. Following treatment, Asser tells her clients to use heat from the dryer to kill any lice that might remain on bed sheets and clothes worn within the day, and to clean hairbrushes by submerging them in hot water for at least 10 minutes – but not to worry about a massive cleaning. Asser said they have about a 98 percent to 99 percent success rate and word is spreading about the business. They see about 12-15 clients a day in the bright office, which has three exam rooms outfitted with TVs and kid DVDs for long sessions. The building does not have a sign out front and offers a rear entrance with parking for those who

Edinborough FROM PAGE 1 Results of a Braemar Golf Course study were presented this summer. The Edina Art Center will be studied later this year. “They’re keenly interested in these enterprise facilities to come closer to a break even. That’s the bottom line,” Keprios said. Enterprise funds, which differ from typical governmental funds, are designed for self-sustaining operations. User fees are meant to cover staff and capital costs, rather than property tax dollars. Most of Edina’s enterprise facilities, with the exception of the Edina Aquatic Center, however, operate at a loss, including the golf course, art center, Edinborough Park, Centennial Lakes Park and Braemar Ice Arena. In the recently adopted 2012 budget, Edinborough Park is anticipated to cost $1.55 million to operate this year, but generate only $1.15 million in revenue – a shortfall of about $400,000. Jeff King, president of Coloradobased recreation consulting firm Ballard King, said the enclosed oneacre park has the potential to bring in more revenue with some significant changes. The park was developed in the late ’80s as part of a mixed-use project, which includes the Edinborough Corporate Center office building, Residence Inn hotel and Edina Park Plaza senior building. Located in a central atrium, today the park features the Adventure Peak playground and Great Hall multi-purpose play area, a 250-seat amphitheater, junior-Olympic size swimming pool, running track and fitness area. More than 6,000 live plants also fill the climate-controlled interior. King said the city should build off the success of Adventure Peak, which hosted more than 1,300 children’s birthday parties in 2011, by expanding youth attractions. The recommended four-phased approach would first infill the pool to create a large soft play area, additional party rooms, restrooms and storage. Second, the track and fitness center would be modified to become a picnic area, provide meeting spaces, offices and storage. Next, a high ropes challenge course would be installed above the new soft play area with the potential to extend over the Great Hall and amphitheater. Finally, most of the planted grotto pathway would be removed to install an interactive technology zone with components like large screen Wii and light floor. The amphitheater could also be utilized for
tech play when performances aren’t scheduled. “Any and all of these options would have a positive impact on your operating budget as it stands today,” King said According to King, Edinborough Park draws 80 percent of its customers from a 20-mile radius compared to the typical community center, which has 57 mile radius. He said Adventure Peak – one of largest indoor play structures in the country – is a popular attraction, while the pool, track and fitness center are languishing. “Our analysis suggests that less than 4 percent of the admission that you receive at Edinborough actually represent the fitness components,” King said. He said limited space makes it difficult for the city to compete against neighboring Southdale YMCA, currently undergoing an expansion, and many private facilities. The pool is also costly to operate, running about $30,000 in annual expenses, he said. According to the study, the renovations would increase admissions to Edinborough Park by 22,500 annually. All four phases would cost an estimated $3.7 million to construct and generate about $135,000 in net income each year not accounting for any debt service payments the city would have to make. The consulting firms also recommended Edina move ahead with approximately $744,000 in other infrastructure and efficiency improvements, like new doors, lighting and sidewalks. Some council and park board members said they hoped the study would have considered more options for Edinborough, like privatization or removing fitness components to create more general public space. “By the time you build it out it really doesn’t sound like there will be much left of what makes Edinborough special today,” said Councilmember Joni Bennett. By expanding kid-friendly uses, she

said it would be impossible for residents to visit the park without paying a fee. “I would really love to know what it would cost us as a community just to operate the facility as a park,” Bennett said. Park board member David Deeds said he wants more information about the potential cost and revenue for the
recommended changes, including bestand worst-case scenarios. “Overall, this is not going to get it to break even. It will close the gap somewhat,” he said. The city council and park board plan to meet again for further discussion on the study results likely in March, when consultants will also have answers to their questions.

Dialogue FROM PAGE 1 said. In the final budget, schools saw a $50 per pupil increase in the state funding formula, but also a delay in state payments causing many districts, including Edina, to borrow money at a cost to meet cash flow needs. While an $876 million budget surplus projected in November could help refill state reserves and pay back schools, Michel said the next budget forecast expected in late February would set the tone for the rest of the session, which begins Tuesday, Jan. 24. If a large deficit is forecast about a month into the 10-week session, Michel said it would force the Legislature back into another budget discussion. “Hopefully we’re at a point economically with our budget that we can not just talk about how we balance things and get through the next year, but talk about how do we right size our school calendar,” Michel said. Michel said one of his priorities is increasing the number of days Minnesota children are in school each year. Currently, the average is about 170 days, compared to 180 days nationally and more than 200 days

should be addressed. They were also asked about what the Legislature is doing to close the achievement gap between white students and students of color. “I think the early childhood education focus is primarily where that’s going to happen,” Mazorol said. “More time and more effort need to be spent getting that right, extending that to a broader part of the community. That’s going to help with the gap issue.” Downey said the achievement gap is a primary focus at the Capitol, but clearly difficult to tackle with policy as nothing done in the last few decades has worked. He said he believes any progress will be incremental, and will come not from state policies but freedom – and possibly more funding – for schools. “The integration aid experiment that we’ve been on I think nearly for 30 years has not really addressed the achievement gap. We’re going to try and start directing that toward things that actually have a proven and measurable outcome,” Downey said. Barbs also flew at the meeting when a group of Edina High School students pressured legislators to support the Minnesota Safe Schools for All Act, which would require districts to adopt anti-harassment policies and staff training programs that conform with the Minnesota Human Rights Act, which specifically protects sexual orientation and gender identity along with sex, race, religion and other characteristics. Senior Gabe Aderhold, who made news this summer for confronting then-presidential candidates former Gov. Tim Pawlenty and U.S. Rep. Michele Bachmann about GLBT issues, said the current state law does not do enough to force action. The law states, “Each school board shall adopt a written policy prohibiting intimidation and bullying of any student. The policy shall address intimidation and bullying in all forms, including, but not limited to, electronic forms and forms involving Internet use.” While he said Edina’s policies are good, other districts need a stronger state mandate. “For someone like you Mr. Downey, who says we need marriage to be defined as one man and one woman [in the Constitution] because the state laws aren’t clear, this state law isn’t clear and we need you to support this now,” Gabe said. “It’s extremely important, so I hope we can have a definitive answer from you tonight. Six-hundred-plus students from Edina are waiting for your answer.” The group of five students and one recent graduate held up a poster with the students’ signatures collected this fall during No H8 week at the school. Downey said he supports the current law because it covers any student and all forms of bullying.

CITY NEWS Sculpture finds home at Centennial Lakes Christmas came a few days early for local art lovers, courtesy of the Edina Community Foundation. On Thursday, Dec. 22, “Reflecting on Friendship,” an award-winning, bronze sculpture by Edina artist Nicholas Legeros, was relocated to the front walkway to Hughes Pavilion at Centennial Lakes Park, 7499 France Ave. S. Centennial Lakes Park regulars may recognize “Reflecting on Friendship” from its previous location along the Edina Promenade, where it won a People’s Choice Award in 2010. The piece, which along with its sandstone plinth measures about 4 feet tall, captures two preschool-aged children in the act of chasing and popping bubbles. The new position outside Hughes Pavilion offers good lighting and sees steady pedestrian traffic in all seasons. In addition, the bronzed reflection of the bubbles at the top of the sculpture complements the gazebo by giving viewers a unique look at its interior architecture. Dick Crocket, executive director of the Edina Community Foundation, said the piece is worthy of the new location. Crocket and his wife Suzie made the reinstallation projection possible through a donation to the foundation for the sculpture’s acquisition.

Additional pieces available for public viewing courtesy of the Edina Community Foundation’s philanthropy include the sculptures “Raven,” on display in the main lobby at City Hall, 4801 W. 50th St., and “Otter,” now located at Edinborough Park, 7700 France Ave. S.

Edina is now open for business Among 13 other cities to help small businesses, entrepreneurs BY PAUL GROESSEL – SUN NEWSPAPERS Eden Prairie is partnering with Hennepin County to give small business owners some free help. The city and county are splitting a $10,000 admission rate to join the nonprofit Metropolitan Consortium of Community Developers, a group that offers small business assistance. Eden Prairie City Council approved the contract during its Dec. 6 meeting, when Community Development Director Janet Jeremiah gave an overview of the consortium’s “Open to Business” program. Through the program, the consortium offers small business owners and entrepreneurs one-on-one assistance in several areas, including businesses plan development, feasibility studies
and marketing. And, it’s free. The services are free for any entrepreneur or business owner who lives or works in Eden Prairie. Members of the consortium also offer finance projections, loan request preparation and advocacy with small business lenders, something that has shown popular and useful in other cities given, Jeremiah said. This service could come in handy since there are an estimated 1,000 athome businesses in the city, according to a recent business survey. There’s an estimated 3,400 businesses in the city, Jeremiah said. “We don’t know exactly what the need for this program is,” Jeremiah said, but in the past six months, Minnetonka businesses have utilized 112 hours of assistance from the consortium. “Minnetonka got a lot of calls right out of the gate,” said Patricia Fitzgerald, a county planner who oversees the program. The Open to Business program
started with a partnership between Brooklyn Park. It has since expanded to Minnetonka and St. Louis Park. Next came Eden Prairie, which will join 12 other cities in a 2012 membership. “It is relatively new, but we’re hearing really great feedback out of Brooklyn Park, Minnetonka and St. Louis Park,” Fitzgerald said. For a shared cost of $10,000 it’s an efficient use of resources, Fitzgerald said. “It’s far too expensive for smaller cities to hire technical assistance experts. … It’s in the city’s best interest to market it widely,” she said. Eden Prairie Mayor Nancy TyraLukens asked Jeremiah during the meeting if there was a cap on the number of hours of assistance the consortium offers. Jeremiah said there is not, and looking at Minnetonka’s rate of service, 112 hours over six months, the contract is valuable. “[It] would offer a nice service at very low dollar fee, especially since
city is only taking care of half of that ($10,000 annual fee),” Jeremiah said. Jeremiah said the consortium offers a quarterly update on the number of hours the consortium helps a city.

BUSINESS NOTES Fairview participating in new care model Edina-based Fairview Health Services was recently selected by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services as one of 32 provider groups across the country to participate in its new Pioneer Accountable Care Organization model. The competitive selection process began last May to identify organizations that have demonstrated capabilities to offer high quality, coordinated and cost-effective care. ACOs are groups of doctors and other healthcare providers who work together to provide high quality, costeffective care for Medicare beneficiaries. Over the last several years,
Fairview and Fairview Physician Associates have been developing this type of provider network, called Fairview Health Network. More than 360 providers from 46 Fairview Health Network clinics – both Fairview-owned and independent – will participate in the pioneer model. The providers will work together to implement new models of care delivery, including care coordination, and to deliver greater value to patients. Under the model, Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services will provide incentives for participating health care providers who form an organization to coordinate care for patients and achieve specified outcomes.

Prep puck faceoff In a battle between top-five high school boys hockey teams, No. 2ranked Maple Grove will play No. 5 Edina at 7 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 12, at Braemar Arena. Maple Grove is coming off a 4-1 loss to No. 1 Duluth East last week. Edina head coach Curt Giles said he is pleased with the way his team has performed. There are only two seniors on the roster, however, the young players have progressed quickly. Captains Nick Leer, Louie Nanne and Parker Reno lead the Hornets.
Showdown on ice Two of the highest-scoring high school hockey teams in Minnesota will face off at 7 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 12, when Benilde-St. Margaret’s High plays Minnetonka at Pagel Activity Center. BSM has creative goal scorers such as Grant Besse and Christian Horn, while Minnetonka counters with Vinni Lettieri and Erik Baskin as its offensive leaders. Minnetonka came into 2012 ranked second in state in Class AA.
Guimont leads Edina Edina High’s star gymnast, Emily Guimont, will lead the Hornets into a Lake Conference dual meet with the Hopkins Royals at 6 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 12, at Edina High School. Guimont placed third on balance beam during last year’s state Class AA meet.
Edina-Hopkins III One of the best girls hockey rivalries in the western suburbs features Lake Conference foes Edina and Hopkins. They will face off for the third time this season at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 17, at Edina’s Braemar Arena. The first game was a 2-2 tie and Edina won the second meeting 2-1. – Compiled by John Sherman

BY NICK CLARK – SUN NEWSPAPERS Lou Nanne, former NHL player and general manager of the Minnesota North Stars, has seldom been guaranteed he would be on the winning side. However, he might have that guarantee when Edina and Minnetonka play a boys high school hockey game at 7 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 19, at Braemar Arena. That night, his grandsons, Louie Nanne of Edina and Vinni Lettieri of Minnetonka, will be on opposite sides. One will win, one will lose. Or better yet, they might play to a tie. Most likely, there would be some consoling to do on one side of the family, and some celebrating on the other. But that is for mom and dad to worry about. Nanne is the grandpa. Earlier this season, when Edina and Minnetonka played in the Schwan Cup at Xcel Energy Center, it was young Louie Nanne who needed consoling. His Hornet team lost to Minnetonka 6-0. “It is always the best situation I could ever be in at a hockey game,” said Lou Nanne, recounting the times he’s spent watching his grandsons square off against each other. “I just get to watch the boys and enjoy it. I can just root for them, hope they play well, and let the outcome decide itself.” The Skippers enter this week’s action 12-1-0 overall and the Hornets are 11-2-0, so the upcoming game is worth much more than family bragging rights. Last summer, when the two boys had college choices to make, grandpa Lou had a definite stake in the

In a matter of weeks, both Louie Nanne, a junior at Edina High School, and Lettieri, a junior at Minnetonka High, committed to play hockey at the University of Minnesota. The elder Nanne skated for the Gophers, and was an All-American defensemen with the team in 1963. His youngest son Marty – Louie’s father – also played at Minnesota. Ultimately, Louie and Vinni will too. But it was never the cinch some expected it to be when Gophers head coach Don Lucia extended offers to both. Louie Nanne was also being COUSINS: TO NEXT PAGE

Benjamin bars the door to Edina’s hockey goal Tall junior emerges as Hornets’ stopper BY JOHN SHERMAN – SUN NEWSPAPERS When Willy Benjamin first started playing Mite Division hockey in Edina, he was a skater. But it didn’t take him long to develop a curiosity about playing in goal. “I kind of liked the equipment,” he said. Once he became a full-time goalie at the end of his Mite career, Benjamin got used to the heavy equipment. He didn’t mind hauling it around everywhere he went. Head coach Curt Giles of the Edina High boys hockey team is glad Benjamin’s career veered toward the goal. “Willy showed up for the first practice ready to play,” Giles said recently. “He has quick hands and quick feet for a big kid. When he’s at his best, Willy is one of the best goalies around. He makes the saves he is supposed to make, and he will make some difficult saves, too.”
Cousins FROM PREVIOUS PAGE courted by a number of Eastern schools, while Lettieri had an offer from North Dakota. There was no wrong choice. Their grandfather made sure to deliver that message. But he made his pitch as well. “I know for both of us he wanted the decision to be ours to make,” said Lettieri. “But I also know he also really wanted us to go play for the Gophers. I took my time, but in the end, it was hard to say no.” But when they join the Gophers, pressure is sure to follow. There are few names in the Minnesota hockey community more familiar than Nanne. Lettieri doesn’t wear the badge on the same level as his cousin, though his father Tino Lettieri was a huge Minnesota sports figure in his soccer playing days with the Minnesota Kicks and Strikers. Tino Lettieri also represented Canada in two Olympic soccer tournaments and one World Cup. Both boys know what it’s like to deal with the pressure.
During the Edina Invitational and Schwan Cup tournaments, Benjamin, who is a junior, helped Edina go 5-1 against stiff competition. He had wins over Grand Rapids (43), Elk River (4-1), Eden Prairie (4-1), Blaine (2-0) and St. Thomas Academy (3-2) during that stretch. The only speed bump came with a 6-0 loss to Minnetonka in the Schwan Cup semifinals at Xcel Energy Center. “In both tournaments, we had three tough games in three nights,” said Giles. Benjamin said his favorite game so far was the Hornets’ win over Eden Prairie in the final round of the Edina Invitational. “All of our systems worked that night, and we played well as a team,” said Benjamin. “We only have two seniors on the roster, so we knew we would have some rough spots. We’re still making some young mistakes, including me.” At 6 feet, 3 inches and 195 pounds, Benjamin’s size and agility allow him to put the eraser to some of his own mistakes. HOCKEY: TO NEXT PAGE
“I know people see us and think we’ve had it easy,” said Louie Nanne. “We’ve faced trials. We know we are a target. For me, I’ve just tried to carve my own path. It’s obviously an honor to share a name with my grandfather, but I think both me and Vinni try and be our own person.” Perceptions being what they may, national team roster spots and scholarship offers from the state’s premier college hockey program don’t get handed out because of the name on the back of a uniform. Louie Nanne played for the Under-18 national team at the U18 Ivan Hlinka Tournament in Slovakia this past August. At the same time, Lettieri was in Ann Arbor, Mich., skating with Team USA in the Under-17 Five Nations Tournament. Both committed to the Gophers shortly after their appearance on the national stage, but each had already cemented himself into the lineup of a powerful Minnesota high school team. Lettieri skated for Minnetonka his entire sophomore season and had 40 points for a team that won 16 games. Nanne scored 29 points in helping guide Edina to a fourth-place finish in the

Class AA boys state high school hockey tournament. They are on pace for similar or better numbers this season. Nanne started playing for the Hornets as a ninth-grader, finishing with five points, which included an assist in Edina’s state championship game victory over … Minnetonka. “Yeah, that night was interesting,” Louie Nanne said. “Vinni was still playing Bantams, but my dad had a [suite] for the game, and Vinni’s mom Michelle was in it. We scored 26 seconds in, and she kicked something, so my dad kicked her out. She was upset, so she was out right away. I wasn’t that surprised, though. It’s a pretty competitive family.” It’s that way between Vinni and Louie, too. They play like brothers. There is a winner. And a loser. Always. It so happens their opportunity to play it out comes inside one of high school hockey’s biggest rivalries. “I don’t think we really care about each other when we are on the other team,” Lettieri said. “It’s bragging rights really, so we just go all out and try and hit each other. I remember last year, he got me good one time. It’s definitely super-competitive when we are playing.”
Soon, they will be together. But they will have decisions to make about their route to college hockey. Each has a season and a half of high school eligibility remaining. They are committed to their high school teams this season. Next year, they might have to decide between remaining with their schools and playing junior hockey someplace. Lucia will likely have a say, and with it being Louie Nanne’s draft year, he’s hoping a National Hockey League club has an opinion on the matter too. Grandpa is sure to get his point across as well. For his part, Lou Nanne said there are few better moments in life than graduating with your high school class. And that’s not all. “Maybe they even get the good fortune of going to a state tournament again,” said Lou Nanne, the television voice of the tournament since 1964. “If they go to juniors, it might accelerate their short-term development. And it might not. “I will tell them this: Playing in high school will not hold you back from your long-term goals. If they are good enough to play pro someday, that won’t change because they played another year of high school hockey.”

Hornet basketball teams are red hot in non-conference action Girls and boys teams both build impressive winning streaks BY JOHN SHERMAN SUN NEWSPAPERS Injuries have not stopped the Edina High girls basketball team (12-0) from taking hold of second place in the state Class 4A rankings. However, Hornet head coach Matt Nilsen has had to be judicious in making sure everyone is fit to play. “M.C. McGrory and Vivian Engen have had concussions, Shannon Good had a sprained thumb and Hailey Merrill had a partially separated shoulder,” said Nilsen. “I feel like an NFL coach, listing players as probable or doubtful for games.” There is no doubt that sen-
ior guard Katybeth Biewen is having a healthy impact on the team’s success. In a 45-35 victory over Duluth East Jan. 7, she controlled the action from start to finish. Her line included 26 points, six steals, five assists and seven rebounds. Earlier in the week, during a 56-42 victory over Shakopee, Biewen passed the 1,000-point career scoring mark with 18 points. Senior forward Lindsey Johnson added 15 points and McGrory had nine points. “We have to rely heavily on defense,” said Nilsen. “We’re not like Hopkins. We’re not a team that’s going to score 80 points a game.” Hopkins (14-0) is the only team ahead of Edina in the state Class 4A rankings. All three other Lake Conference teams, Eden Prairie, Minnetonka and Wayzata, are ranked among the top seven in state. Next for the Hornets is a game at Rochester John
Marshall at 12:30 Saturday, Jan. 14.
p.m.
Boys basketball After a 0-4 start, the Edina High boys basketball team has charged to a 6-4 record. The Hornets stormed to a 39-16 halftime lead in a 60-44 rout of Shakopee Jan. 6 at Edina Community Center. The big news was the fact that Reggie Lynch, a 6-foot-9 junior transfer from Jefferson, got clearance to play after waiting a month and a half to hear from officials at the state high school league. Lynch didn’t disappoint as he scored 11 points and helped the Hornets control the boards in his debut. Graham Woodward led Edina with 18 points and Marley Allison had 10 points. Edina will play Blake in a neighborhood rivalry game at 7 p.m. Friday, Jan. 13, at Edina Community Center.

Hockey FROM PREVIOUS PAGE “Obviously, there is skill involved in goaltending, but a lot of it is mental strength and ability,” he said. “I have worked hard at this for a long time.” Benjamin has put in the time in the weight room as well as on the ice. “The weightlifting I do is goalie-specific, focusing on the lower body,” he said. “I need strong hips and flexibility.” The Hornets entered 2012 with a record of 8-2-0, which is good for such a young team, Benjamin said. They added a couple of big wins last week, beating Holy Angels 6-2 and White Bear Lake 3-1.
Junior Louie Nanne led the Hornets against Holy Angels with two goals. Freshman Dylan Malmquist was the No. 1 star against White Bear Lake with two goals. Benjamin was the No. 2 star against White Bear Lake with 22 saves. Only one game this season, the 6-0 loss to Minnetonka, gnaws at the Edina players. “Minnetonka is the best team I’ve seen this year,” said Benjamin. “They’re faster than anyone else, and against us, they capitalized on every chance.” What will it take to beat the Skippers? “We need to stay cool and play the way we can play,” said Benjamin. “We have skills and speed, and we’re good enough to do really well. Even though we’re young, we can overcome that. Our goal is to be a threat in the playoffs.”
