Ralph’s Shoe Service was one of Southdale Center’s first tenants, but now it has to move BY ANDREW WIG – SUN NEWSPAPERS When management at Southdale Center told the owner of Ralph’s Shoe Service he would have to move shop last month, Bill Roase didn’t know where he and his business would go. But his shop’s future would not be in doubt for long. The Bloomington resident plans to be up and cobbling by early March at his new location: a storefront in a tiny strip mall near West 66th Street and Penn Avenue South in Richfield. The surrounding area is known as Penn Central, and there the cobbler — he calls himself that — found an environment in stark contrast to his previous confines. The area, predominately populated by small, owner-operated shops, is “kind of like going back to my grandfa-

ther’s roots when he was on 50th and Xerxes, Roase said. It was there that Roase’s grandfather, Ralph, started the shoe repair shop before it became one of the original tenants in the country’s first fully enclosed indoor shopping center in 1956. But Roase heard the news in midDecember: His lease would be terminated at the end of the year to make room for a new food court. Hearing this, he said, “was the worst thing in my life that ever happened to me. It was about a week before Christmas and “I couldn’t believe what I was hearing. But his customers had his back. Soon, they were recommending alternative locations. Richfield’s Penn Central area was one of them. There were other locations available within the shopping center, but Ralph’s was already repaying a loan from a previous move within the mall. So Roase, bitter about being “forced out, decided to take his shop out into the wider, un-enclosed world. His exploration had taken him to a vacant art studio near 66th and Penn, when he met Marv Wenzel, owner of the music shop across the street from the studio, Homestead Pickin’ Parlor, which specializes in all things folk. The computer repair shop next to his own shop was moving, Wenzel told the cobbler. “I went over and looked and thought, this is the perfect size, Roase recounted. He would soon sit down with the building’s owner Vern Veit. The conversation was a departure from those with his previous landlord. “It was one of the best talks I’ve ever had, Roase said. “He’s just a down to RALPH’S: TO NEXT PAGE

Ralph’s FROM PREVIOUS PAGE earth man, you know. Not like these big corporate people. It’s totally different.” It was the day before Christmas Eve, Roase’s birthday, a week after he was told he had to move, and he had a handshake deal to move his operation a mile down 66th Street. “We’re happy to see them come into the neighborhood,” said Veit, who also owns Southtown Plumbing across the street from Roase’s new location, plus the multi-tenant commercial building housing the plumbing business. Other neighbors have echoed the sentiment. “I’ve never had so many open arms,” Roase rejoiced. Ralph’s Shoe Service fits the area pop-
ulated with “destination shops,” his new neighbors said. Wenzel said his store, for instance, is one of a kind in Minnesota, drawing folk musicians and fans from afar. Many of the shops here match Ralph’s old-fashioned flavor. In the same building as the shoe repair shop’s future home is a baseball card shop. Further down is an ice cream parlor. The other direction, a couple blocks north on Penn Avenue, is a typewriter shop. Chain stores here are few. The closest thing to a big box store would be the under-construction CVS Pharmacy or the Lund’s grocery store that marks the northern end of Penn Central, near Highway 62. “Ralph’s is going to fit right in here,” said John Cecere, who grew up in Edina

Dr. Frank Ryan, famous plastic surgeon to the Hollywood stars, was featured on television and in magazines across the nation on an extensive basis. Before he died in a tragic car accident on the Pacific Coast Highway near his ranch in Malibu, Dr. Ryan fulfilled his lifelong dream of developing a line of products which would substantially improve personal appearance without plastic surgery. This product line, which includes an advanced abdominal fat reducer was previously only available to Dr. Ryan’s clients. It has now been made available to the public.

physical activity. People who were not exercising or dieting lost weight and pot belly as well as those who were exercising and dieting. The study also showed that Dr. Frank Ryan’s Abdominal Fat Reducer significantly increased calorie burning so that you lose weight faster or you can eat more food without gaining weight. And, the study found that the all natural Dr. Frank Ryan’s Abdominal Fat Reducer pill produced weight loss safely. How does Dr. Frank Ryan’s Abdominal Fat Reducer work? It was found in a number of research studies that a substance called Conjugated Linoleic Acid (CLA) decreases abdominal body fat in three ways: 1.) CLA decreases abdominal body fat mass by decreasing the amount of abdominal fat that is stored after eating; 2.) CLA increases the rate of fat breakdown in abdominal fat cells; and 3.) CLA increases the rate of abdominal fat metabolism which decreases the total number of fat cells. You can think of CLA as a match that lights the fuse in abdominal fat. This fuse also increases metabolic rate that can result in more fat loss. Dr. Frank Ryan’s Abdominal Fat Reducer contains the effective dose of CLA. CLA interferes with an enzyme called lipoprotein lipase (LPL). LPL is an enzyme that helps store fat in the body. 2 So, by inhibiting this fat-storing enzyme LPL, CLA can help reduce the reaccumulation of fat. CLA also helps the body use its existing abdominal fat for energy, thereby increasing fat oxidation and energy expenditure. Dr. Frank Ryan’s Abdominal Fat Reducer also contains other super highly advanced all-natural ingredients that help reduce abdominal fat. Studies have shown that Dr. Frank Ryan’s Abdominal Fat Reducer ingredients increase the rate of fat metabolism, which reduces both surface and intestinal abdominal fat and helps inhibit future formation of these abdominal fats.3, 4, 5 One of these ingredients is a very high quality and

An advanced line of products produced by famous Beverly Hills plastic surgeon Dr. Frank Ryan is now available to the public. Previously these products had only been available to Dr. Ryan’s clients which included Oscar winning Hollywood movie stars and celebrities across the nation. These products substantially improve personal appearance without plastic surgery. Dr. Ryan, perhaps the most famous Hollywood plastic surgeon in recent times, was extensively featured on television and in magazines across the nation. Dr. Ryan was also one of the first professional staff members of Endless Youth and Life which provides products and services that make celebrities look and perform many years younger than their age. On August 16, 2010 Dr. Ryan died in a tragic car accident. It was Dr. Ryan’s wishes that Endless Youth and Life would make his advanced non-surgical product line available to the public in the future. Endless Youth and Life is now complying with Dr. Ryan’s wishes. The first product being offered to the public is Dr. Ryan’s most popular non-surgical personal appearance enhancement product, Dr. Frank Ryan’s Abdominal Fat Reducer. Abdominal fat is the most stubborn fat to reduce and it is also the most hazardous fat to health. Abdominal fat produces destructive hormones that spread throughout the body. A clinical study has shown that Dr. Frank Ryan’s Abdominal Fat Reducer can reduce your pot belly without changing your diet or physical activity. A double blind clinical study was conducted on Dr. Frank Ryan’s Abdominal Fat Reducer. The study was commissioned by Advanced Supplement Research and used a research group which conducts clinical studies for the major drug companies. Ralph’s FROM PAGE 3 and whose mother and sisters patronized Ralph’s at Southdale. Cecere, the owner of Accessory Computer Service Center, will vacate his space Dec. 31 and make way for Ralph’s. He said he is moving due to a change in his business model — he will focus on appointments rather than walk-in business. So gone will be the inherently hightech business of computer repair, and in comes the decidedly ancient business of shoe repair. Roase said cobblers like he are becoming a rare breed. “A lot of people, they don’t even know where to find one,” he noted. “A lot of them have closed down. People get old and pass on and the rest of the family doesn’t continue to do it.” But Roase, who will enjoy a greater degree of operational freedom in his new spot, has a chance to continue plying the trade he said learned from his father and grandfather when he was 9 or 10. Now, his challenge is to re-attract his clientele, who now will be speeding by on wheels instead of strolling by on foot. He believes they will come, though. “Shoe repair shops are a high-demand thing if people know where they are at,”
he said. And Ralph’s Shoe Service is unlikely to be overshadowed by a new bog-box retailer any time soon, because commercial configuration of Penn Central should functionally keep those types out, local proprietors say. “You don’t have a parcel of land that’s large enough to do something that’s substantial on, so you have to piece together many different parcels,” said David Gepner, a leader of the group called Penn Central of Richfield, which was formed four-and-a-half years ago to focus on the revitalization of the area and to hold the city accountable to design guidelines established for the corridor in 2008. The assemblage of smaller commercial parcels in the neighborhood will help Penn Central boosters keep the area they way they like it, populated with shops like Roase’s and Wenzel’s that represent “the colorful character that has been assembled along Penn Avenue,” Gepner said. It is a place where “everybody just kind of watches out for everyone else,” said Veit, Roase’s new landlord. And, by all reports, the Penn Central neighborhood will gladly watch Ralph’s Shoe Service move in. Veit summarized his feelings: “All I can say is, ‘Welcome.’”

Resolution or not, goal setting is important Setting goals helps youth learn to plan, prepare for future It’s 2012 and I resolve to clean out my kitchen junk drawer – and keep it clean. I resolve to organize all of my photographs. I resolve to get up every morning at 5 a.m. to hit the gym. I will balance my checking account to the penny every month and contribute more to my IRA. I will learn a new language and cure cancer and negotiate world peace. Oh, and in my spare time, I resolve to take up knitting. Who am I kidding? I know if I clean the junk drawer it will just get disorganized after a few days. I know that almost nothing will get me out of a warm bed at 5 a.m. in the dead of winter. I also know that I will continue with my “close enough” attitude
HEATHER HAEN ANDERSON Guest Columnist
toward balancing the checkbook. And while I would like to cure cancer, not having a background in either chemistry or medicine will make that difficult. I may break every resolution by the end of this month, but trying to improve myself is important to me. New Year’s resolutions may seem like a trite and outdated tradition with no applicable value, but they do have worth, especially when it comes to our children. Resolutions are nothing more than a stylized method of setting goals. And like so many other aspects of their young lives, children need help
to develop the skill of goal setting. They need to know that goals and hard work are usually what make us successful. Think back to the last time you really gave goal-setting some attention. Probably while sitting in your annual review at work, which is not usually conducive to introspection. But think back even farther, to how you got the job you have right now. What kinds of goals did you have to make to get there? Get good grades, do well in school, major in an area you were both good at and interested in? Probably. Parents and teachers are the obvious resources for teaching kids about planning. We can help them track their homework in their daily planners, let them plan and implement parties or events and help them to research their options for after high school graduation. But,
really, almost all of us can help. Supervisors can help first-time employees learn how to be better workers, retirees can share their skills on long-term projects, aunts and uncles can ask “whatif ” questions. If children are not taught at an early age how to set smaller goals, then life’s bigger ones may remain elusive. Planning is an important developmental asset, and as a bonus, leads to other equally important assets, such as personal power, a sense of purpose, and a positive view of their future. So what are my goals for 2012? I resolve to mentor a high school student, cook dinner more often and to do a better job reaching out to friends. Learning to knit? Probably not. Haen Anderson is executive director of Connecting With Kids Edina.
Partnering for clean water, because no one can do it alone BY JIM CALKINS GUEST COLUMNIST With tightening budgets and growing responsibilities, public agencies increasingly must work together to fulfill their missions. The Minnehaha Creek Watershed District is a great example: It includes 29 cities and townships, operates under a Board of Managers appointed by two counties, submits its 10-year plans to the state and keeps an eye on projects built by private developers, other government bodies, nonprofits and individual homeowners. Very few district projects are executed solely by the district. Most projects are partnership efforts and this focus on cooperation has yielded national awards, recognition from other agencies and, most important-
ly, significant improvements in the district’s water resources. The district has partnered broadly in its recent efforts to restore Minnehaha Creek through Hopkins and St. Louis Park. The first step was at Methodist Hospital in 2009, where the district joined forces with Park Nicollet Health Services to return the creek to a more natural shape while restoring the surrounding wetlands. Recognizing the value of being near natural beauty for its patients, the hospital built a boardwalk and trail system, increasing public access to the creek. Based on the success of this project, the district is now working with St. Louis Park to continue that creek restoration work upstream of Methodist Hospital and build trails that link to the anticipated light rail
line. The district has also partnered with Hopkins to purchase property that will increase public access to Minnehaha Creek and improve more than 1,000 feet of shoreline. In Edina, the District is working with homeowners to stabilize 4,000 feet of stream bank along the creek. Another successful partnership resulted in the preservation of a 56-acre parcel of land on Big Island in Lake Minnetonka. The district worked with Orono and Minnesota on the effort, which conserves the property as a natural park for the public’s enjoyment. The project would not have been possible without help from a coalition of Minnesota Veterans groups, who, for eight decades, had used the island as a campground, and Gabriel Jabbour,
the former mayor of Orono and a champion for keeping the island natural and accessible to the public. At the Gray’s Bay Dam, the outlet of Lake Minnetonka and the headwaters of Minnehaha Creek, the district partnered with the city of Minnetonka to enhance water quality and add recreational opportunities. To improve water quality in Halsted Bay on the western side of the lake, the district is working with farmers along Six Mile Creek to reduce runoff and erosion. And, Bob and Jan Halverson sold their 112-acre Minnetrista farm on Six Mile Creek to the district at a discount to ensure it will be preserved and restored to improve water quality in the creek and Halsted CALKINS: TO NEXT PAGE

The company began when Andersen bought competing weekly newspapers in Princeton and combined them into the Princeton Union-Eagle. Subsequently, ECM added a commercial web printing plant and acquired an independent delivery company that now operates as a division of ECM. In a sequence of transactions over the past 30 years, ECM acquired additional newspapers. Mish Mash FROM PREVIOUS PAGE new. “The idea of looking locally before hitting the big stores is catching on.” Dollhouse seller Schilling of Edina said their personalities and interests clicked, leading first to a book club invitation and then a catering gig for Barry at one of Schilling’s handmade jewelry sales. After knowing each other for a little more than a year, the friends opened Mish Mash together in April 2011. They said they hope to inspire to people to reuse, repurpose and recycle at the occasional store and workshop, open Thursday through Saturday. “There’s not a lot in Edina like this,” Schilling said. “Edina has a lot to offer as a community, but this was something that was lacking.” About half of the shop is filled with quality vintage goods – from rolls of wallpaper, to furniture, globes, dishes and coats. The “extreme bargain hunters” source the items, Barry said. “We sort through the estate sales, rummage sales and garage sales looking for vintage goodies we love,” Schilling said. The average item costs about $15 to $20, and is totally unique, Barry said. “Everything in here is one of a kind,”
Above left, Mish Mash, 4504B Valley View Road, in Edina, offers vintage and repurposed goods, local art and a workshop area for events and parties. At right, Mish Mash owners Annie Schilling and Marlena Barry say about half the store is filled with items from 30 local artists, including these upcycled vinyl records now serving as decorative bowls. (Photos by Katie Mintz – Sun Newspapers) she said. The other half of Mish Mash carries creations from about 30 local artists, including paintings, stained glass and organic bath and body products. Many of the artists’ items are also “upcycled” –

Barry, who was a special education teacher before starting her family 10 years ago, makes and sells baby clothes made from vintage linens. Both women said a favorite aspect of owning the business is seeing their customers get ideas to transform their own unused items or see a vintage object in a new light. It’s the thought that “Yeah, it was at grandma’s house, but it’s still cool,” said Barry, noting many older items were built to last from high quality materials. To help inspire projects, Mish Mash is also equipped with a workshop, where Schilling and Barry hold events, such as an upcoming workshop to turn old windows into jewelry holders, and clothing and jewelry swaps. They also rent the space for children’s birthday parties, book club meetings and private craft parties. They said birthday parties, which cost $150 for 10 kids and include activities and crafts, have been a popular attraction. Like the goods throughout the store, Mish Mash is also outfitted with reused items. An old crib displays baby clothes. Secondhand workroom and store fixtures line the walls. Schilling said they were, of course, purchased from another close friend met on Craigslist. How does your chimney look? Are the bricks crumbling? Does it have White or Black exterior staining? Are you afraid to use your fireplace because you’re not sure how safe it is? When was the last time you used it? The professionals at AirBroom Minnesota Fireplace and Air Duct Cleaning in Excelsior can restore both your confidence and your chimney. Did you know that water causes more damage to masonry chimneys than fire? Your chimney, unlike other parts of your house, is constantly exposed to the elements. They are generally constructed of brick, mortar, tile, steel, and iron. All of these materials suffer deterioration as a result of prolonged contact with water. Freeze and thaw cycles so familiar here in the Twin Cities cause stress on the chimney. Water that has penetrated expands and contracts. Left unchecked it will cause interior and exterior damage to your home and masonry chimney. Some of the damage that can be caused includes: 1) spalled and broken exterior brickwork, 2) deteriorated masonry and metal firebox assemblies, 3) rusted dampers, 4) decayed mortar, cracked or missing flue liners, and in the worst case scenario damage to adjoining walls, ceilings, and woodwork. There are three main ways to prevent water damage.

1) Install a chimney cap. This is the most inexpensive measure to prevent water penetration to the flue and inside chimney elements. We sell and install locally manufactured caps for as little as $99. 2) Repair or replace a damaged chimney crown. The crown sits atop your chimney and covers and seals it from the flue liners to the chimney edge. Many chimneys are built with an inadequate crown constructed from common mortar mix. Mortar is not designed for and will not withstand years of prolonged moisture exposure without cracking and chipping which allows water to penetrate the chimney. A proper crown is constructed of a Portland
cement mixture and formed to provide an overhang drip edge. This assures the water will shed helping to prevent erosion in the mortar and brick of the chimneys surfaces. Keeping the crown “watertight” and shedding away from the sponge like masonry elements that the chimney is built of is the most important element to preventing deterioration. At AirBroom Minnesota we use the industry leading line of Saver products to build and repair chimneys. Use of these products allows us to pass on manufacturers material warranties of up to 15 years to our clients. 3) Waterproof your masonry chimney and crown. Most masonry is porous and will absorb large amounts of water. Brick acts like a sponge absorbing water and wicking it to the chimney interior. Products we use are specifically developed for use as waterproofing agents on masonry chimneys. These are vapor permeable – which means they allow the masonry to breath out but not in. This allows water that has penetrated the chimney to escape while preventing additional water from entering from the outside. Non vapor permeable sealers commonly available should never be used because they trap moisture inside actually accelerating deterioration. We use a special permeable sealer with a 10 year consumer warranty to protect your chimney. Doing this before deterioration occurs can save you hundreds or even thousands of dollars in future repairs. Water damage to chimneys is usually a slow subtle process. The problem is generally not obvious until it has become quite serious. Although these prevention measures may cost you a few dollars they can save you a lot more by preventing large future masonry repairs. The Hartmann’s at AirBroom Minnesota in Excelsior offer free no obligation repair estimates in the Western Metro area. Call John, Jim, or Lynda today to arrange a free no obligation estimate. Visit us at AirBroomMinnesota.com or call us at 952.545.2254. As a bonus, repair jobs over $750 scheduled with us prior to January 31 receive $100 off when you mention this article.

according to police. Her description of the man was similar to the description in the Edina incident. Another Bloomington woman was robbed about 5:48 a.m. Dec. 8 outside of a Bloomington coffee shop. The woman pulled into the Caribou Coffee shop at the intersection of France Avenue and Old Shakopee Road and noticed a vehicle pull in behind her and park away from the building. The woman parked near the coffee shop entrance and

Hart also identified Benjamin as a possible suspect in the Dec. 23 incident in Mounds View and the Dec. 22 incident in Savage, for which he faces charges. According to the criminal complaint filed in Scott County District Court, Savage officers were dispatched 5:45 p.m.
Dec. 22 to a silent panic alarm at Mediacom on Huntington Avenue in Savage. When officers arrived, an employee said a black male, about 5-foot-8 to 5foot-10, wearing black clothing, black gloves and a black stocking cap entered the store and ran behind the counter. She said the man pushed her to the ground and pointed a small black handgun at her. He took money from the till, ROBBERIES: TO NEXT PAGE

Officers checked a Dumpster at the gas station and found her purse, cell phone, wallet, driver’s license and other documents. On Dec. 26, the Bloomington Police Department advised Savage that they identified Benjamin as a suspect in an
investigation of robbery in their city. Savage officers put together a photo lineup and the Mediacom employee picked out Benjamin as the man who robbed her. Savage police asked Bloomington police to arrest Benjamin. Savage police were notified 9:30 a.m. Tuesday, Dec. 27, that Benjamin was in custody. A search warrant was executed at his residence in Bloomington. Inside a bedroom closet officers located a black hooded sweat-
shirt, black jacket, black pants and a black stocking cap. A Savage officer spoke with Benjamin and advised him that the department had evidence he committed a robbery in Savage. Benjamin denied committing the robbery. When asked if he thought the officer was lying to him, Benjamin said, “I think you are doing your job. If you have anything, I am not dumb. I know what it is going to come to.”

Kiltie Finsand Finsand finished second in the state Alpine ski meet at Giants Ridge in Biwabik last winter. Also a soccer player and a track and field athlete, she was named Edina High’s Athena Award winner for 2011.
BY JOHN SHERMAN – SUN NEWSPAPERS When tornados ravaged Joplin, Mo. in May, many families had their property and homes disappear into late-afternoon funnel clouds. In the aftermath, many volunteers came to Joplin to lend a hand. One of them was Edina native Adam Goldberg, an offensive tackle with the NFL’s St. Louis Rams. Goldberg helped organize a trip to Joplin that included Rams players James Laurinaitis and Sam Bradford. The Rams showed their support for the tornado victims by signing autographs, throwing the football with the kids and comforting adults who had lost everything. Goldberg, who is the NFL player representative for the Rams, reached out to hundreds of people on the trip to Joplin and was pleased that several of his teammates were as excited as he was to pitch in and help. Laurinaitis, a Wayzata High graduate, was on board from the beginning and so was Bradford, the second-year quarterback from the University of Oklahoma. Goldberg leads the Edina SunCurrent’s list of the Top 20 Sports Achievers of 2011. Here is our best of the best in alphabetical order.

Adam Goldberg The aforementioned football lineman is in his eighth NFL season. Prior to joining the pro ranks, he starred at the University of Wyoming. He was an allconference football and basketball player at Edina High. “Adam is one of the finest people I have been associated with during my 30 years in education,” said former Edina High football coach Todd Olson.
Michael Gratz Gratz concluded his senior season with the Edina High boys swimming team by winning the 100-yard freestyle title at the state Class AA meet. His time was 45.13 seconds. Gratz swam on Edina’s winning 200 and 400 freestyle relays to complete his triple gold-medal night.

Will Burke
The Edina High ninth-grade swimmer won the state Class AA 100-yard breaststroke title in 1 minute, 2.89 seconds. She also swam on Edina’s gold medal-winning 200-yard freestyle relay that set an alltime state record of 1:34.40.
The Edina High junior earned AllState status with a 12th-place finish in the state Class AA boys cross country meet at St. Olaf College in Northfield. His 5K time was 16 minutes, 1 second.

Kevin Carroll
Asp, a former football and basketball star at Edina High, won All-Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference football honors as a receiver for St. Olaf College. He had 36 receptions for 806 yards and scored nine touchdowns.
Edina High’s senior offensive tackle earned All-Lake Conference honors for the second consecutive season in 2011. After helping the Hornets to a 5-5 record, he is considering several Division I scholarship offers.

breaststroke helped the Edina High boys swimming team to third place in the state Class AA meet. His winning time was 55.56 seconds. Cartwright added a second gold medal at state as a member of Edina’s 400-yard freestyle relay.
Maddie Dahl Edina High’s girls hockey goalie tied a state Class AA tournament record for most shutouts in the tourney with two. After beating Rosemount 6-0 and HillMurray 2-0 in the first two rounds, the Hornets lost to Minnetonka 3-2 in the championship game.
Madeleine Eden The Edina High junior helped the Hornets win the state Class AA swimming and diving title. She swam on two state champion relay teams and finished second in the 200-yard individual medley.
Guimont put the Edina High gymnastics team back in the state spotlight when she took third place on balance beam during the 2011 state Class AA meet. Her score was 9.5625.
Aldis Inde In the closest state 3,200-meter final ever, the Edina track star lost to Glen Ellingson of Moorhead by one one-hundredth of a second. Inde made All-Lake and All-State teams in track and cross country during his prep career. In the fall of 2011, he won the Edina varsity-alumni cross country race. He is currently running at Williams College in Massachusetts.
Nikki Larson Larson, a senior captain for the Edina High girls swimming and diving team, had a spectacular state meet, winning four gold medals. Edina skaters take third in Schwan Cup boys hockey tournament Hornets win two of three in Gold Division
Senior guard Katybeth Biewen scored 19 points in the title game to lead the Hornets and junior guard M.C. McGrory added 17. In the first round, McGrory scored 23 points in a 71-58 win over Totino-Grace. “M.C. and Katybeth were named to the all-tournament team,” said Nilsen. “Lindsey Johnson also could have made the all-tournament team.”
BY JOHN SHERMAN – SUN NEWSPAPERS In one of Minnesota’s most competitive high school boys hockey tournaments, the Schwan Cup Gold Division, Minnetonka and Edina represented the Lake Conference with second- and thirdplace finishes. Duluth East won the cup with a 6-2 victory over Tonka in the title game Dec. 28 at Xcel Energy Center. In a battle between the teams that have been ranked first and second in the state for most of the season, Duluth East rolled to a 2-0 lead in the first period and led 5-1 by the second intermission. Minnetonka outshot East 32-29 as Joe Schuldt and Erik Baskin scored the Skippers’ goals. In the semifinals Dec. 27, Minnetonka blitzed Edina 6-0 after scoring three goals in the first period. “We will take any win we can get against Edina,” said Minnetonka head coach Brian Urick. “It is always a great rivalry.” “Minnetonka was quick and we were slow,” said Edina head coach Curt Giles. “They got up the ice in a hurry, and I didn’t think we played to our strengths.” Max Coatta had two first-period goals for Tonka and Jack Ramsey also scored. Connor Thie, Tommy Vannelli and Phil Katapodis added goals and Paul Ciaccio had 23 saves in goal. Minnetonka and Edina scored firstround wins Dec. 26. The Skippers dominated in a 7-3 victory over Hill-Murray. Edina won a defensive battle against Blaine, 2-0, behind the goaltending of Willy Benjamin, who made 29 saves. “Blaine was exactly what we expected – a quality team that plays it close to the vest,” said Giles.

Edina needed third-period goals from Tim Spicola and freshman Dylan Malmquist to secure the win. Louie Nanne scored earlier in the game for the Hornets. “It was a good tournament for us,” said Giles. “We played three quality teams in three nights. “I was proud of the way the kids played against St. Thomas Academy. You always want to see how a young team like

Coach Matt Nilsen’s Hornets won the St. Michael-Albertville Invitational by taking down a tough Bismarck (N.D.) Century team 57-52 in the finals. “Bismarck’s girls were very physical, and it was good to see we could respond to that,” said Nilsen.
Tim Satterthwaite Satterthwaite was one of the seniors who led Edina to third place in the 2011 state Class AA swimming meet. When the meet ended, three gold medals hung from his neck. Hornets down Hopkins for ABRA tourney championship Dahl’s goaltending lifts Edina girls to the title BY JOHN SHERMAN – SUN NEWSPAPERS Edina High girls hockey goalie Maddie Dahl came off the rink beaming Dec. 28 at Braemar Arena. No one could see her emotions behind the mask, but once she took it off, fans could tell that she was excited about beating Hopkins 2-1 in the title game of the ABRA Auto Body Tournament. “Hopkins is a fast team that likes to dump the puck in,” Dahl said after the game. “This is a good win for us. We tied Hopkins 2-2 [Dec. 17].” Edina head coach Laura Slominski said it has been a pleasure to watch Dahl play this season. “We always start from the defensive end,” said Slominski. “Maddie has played very well this season. I have a lot of confidence in her and in all of our kids. Our success in the tournament was due to hard work. “Against Hopkins, we played one of our best team games of the season. We made huge strides toward becoming totally unselfish.” All of the scoring in the title game occurred in the second period. Lizzy Otten gave the Hornets a 1-0 lead when she converted a pass from Megan Armstrong.
Stuffed!
Hopkins tied the score on a goal by Ali Rolandelli, which was assisted by Grace Bizal. Edina regained the lead when Armstrong scored from Kelly McGarvey and Renee Johnson. The Hornets had the better of the play, but had trouble with Hopkins’ sophomore goalie, Erin O’Neil, who made 31 saves. Dahl finished with 10 stops. “It is always fun to play Edina,” Hopkins head coach Vin Paolucci said. “I wish we could have played better in the second period, but we did come back with much more energy in the third period. “I am proud of our girls. We played three tough games in three nights, which will help us later in the season.” Edina is one of the state’s elite teams and proved that in the tournament. The Hornets shut out Duluth 4-0 in the first round with Dahl making 12 saves. Armstrong, Anna Bartz, Hannah Burns and Sarah Nielsen scored Edina’s goals. Burns was the top playmaker with two assists. In the semifinals, Edina clipped Lakeville South 3-1 with goals by Burns, McGarvey and Otten. Nielsen and Liz Trautz each had two assists. The tournament sweep left Edina 7-34 overall. The Hornets are ranked eighth in state by Let’s Play Hockey magazine.
