Candidate leaves race after alleged Internet writings called out by blogger BY KATIE MINTZ – SUN NEWSPAPERS Edina School Board candidate Jason Berger has withdrawn from the election following recent attention to his alleged online writings. “As of 4 p.m. today, I have formally withdrawn from the race in order to spend the remaining time defending my reputation to the many people who have been kind enough to support me,” Berger said in an email Monday, Oct. 10. Candidates had until Aug. 18, to withdraw their name from the Tuesday, Nov. 8, ballot. Because he did not make the deadline, his name will still appear on the ballot, said the district’s Director of Business Services Margo Nash. Nash said because he did not withdraw before the official deadline, Berger can still accept the position if one of the top three vote-getters. If he wins and declines the position, the school board must appoint a person to fill the vacancy until the district’s next election cycle in 2013. Berger’s Internet activity was recently called into question on local news website Edina Patch (edina.patch.com) by blogger and political operative Dick Novack. Novack of Edina, who blogs in Patch’s Local Voices section, said he connected what he called troubling content on several websites to Berger, one of four candidates for three seats on the BERGER: TO PAGE 14

Congrats on making Edina a top 100 community for youth – again Edina named to list for second time Edina has once again achieved national recognition as one of America’s Promise Alliance’s 2011 100 Best Communities for Young People presented by ING for its initiatives to help young people. The designation recognizes communities across the country that focus on reducing high school dropout rates and providing service and support to their youth. A second-time 100 Best winner, Edina has a sought-after school district with an outstanding 98 percent graduation rate and consistently ranks No. 1 in Minnesota when it comes to standardized testing, but our community’s educational efforts don’t stop there. Edina ABC, a nonprofit organization, works to provide education to talented students of

color from low-income families outside of Edina. Edina’s May Term Program offers high school seniors the opportunity to participate in an internship or create an educational project of their own design. In addition to educational efforts, Edina is part of the Tri-City Partners for Healthy Youth and Communities, which is a blend of public health professionals and community members who work to reduce risk-taking behaviors. The city also has 14 youth athletic associations, many run solely by more than 1,100 adult volunteers who work to help 10,200 Edina youth lead healthy and active lives. Connecting With Kids is proud

of Edina for being named one of the America’s Promise Alliance’s 100 Best. This award recognizes the hard work of many community members that have dedicated their time to making a difference in the lives of our youth. “In a nation where 7,000 students drop out of high school every day, we hope Edina’s initiatives inspire other communities across the nation to take action to solve the challenges facing their young people,” said Marguerite W. Kondracke, America’s Promise Alliance president and CEO. “Edina is especially deserving of this recognition due to their efforts to ensure that their young people graduate high school and go on to lead healthy, productive lives. Edina refuses to let the challenges they face determine the future for their young people. Instead, they are helping their youth prosper and become contributing members

of society.” First held in 2005, the 100 Best competition is one of the Alliance’s signature initiatives and is part of its Grad Nation campaign, which is a 10-year initiative to mobilize Americans to end the high school dropout crisis and prepare young people for college and the 21st century workforce. The 100 Best honors communities large and small, rural and urban, that are making progress to help young people achieve their potential, which includes earning a high school diploma, securing a good job, and playing an active, productive role in America’s economic vitality. So please join me in congratulating all of us who help to make Edina a great place to live, learn, work and worship.

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Berger exits Edina School Board race To the editor: As of Monday, Oct. 10, I served notice to the Edina School District clerk that I am no longer an active candidate for the Edina School Board election. I have attracted the attention of a local blogger who has been attacking candidates of both parties for many years now. He has cut and pasted comments I have made and some I have not in order to fulfill a political agenda. When placed in their proper context, the statements I have actually

made are easy to defend, but have little to do with my qualifications as a school board member. On closer examination, it becomes clear that this information is not news or journalism. It’s been my pleasure to have gotten to know the other candidates in recent months as we’ve gone through the various profiles and debates. I know that they will all do an excellent job of guiding the school district. It is with this confidence that I will exit the race to protect my family from further harassment. I especially want to thank all of those who supported my campaign. Jason Berger Edina

Letters FROM PREVIOUS PAGE see the different sides of Sarah as a leader on the Parent Communications Network, as a fellow-Highlands parent and as a cookie mom for our Girl Scout Troop. I’ve been impressed with her passion, professionalism and persistence with all of her commitments. Her willingness to step up and carry out tasks in the most effective ways has been a hallmark of her efforts. Sarah will ask the tough questions when needed along with being fair-minded and pragmatic about creating common-sense solutions we need for our schools. On Nov. 8, give kids, parents and taxpayers of Edina a strong, new voice on school board. Vote for Sarah Patzloff. Kristen Smollen Edina

Supports Cella To the editor: “We have two ears and one mouth so that we can listen twice as much as we speak. – Epictetus, philosopher Twenty-plus years ago I met Cathy Cella while serving on the Edina Countryside Council. One of the many attributes Cathy had was her ability to

listen to everyone and be able to explain, in detail, a solution with inclusion of most that would help rectify a problem or advance an objective. Now that I call Cathy a friend, I admire her untiring spirit in returning to her home town after pursuing a law degree, raising four children, and continuing to ensure that Edina’s education continues to progress and improve during these times of fiscal uncertainty. Please join me in voting for incumbent Cathy Cella for Edina School Board. Nikki Edwards Edina

Technology levy is about empowerment To the editor: As an involved parent, I feel the need to clarify some facts about the upcoming referendums. One of the referendums is a technology levy, the other a renewal of existing funding. The tech levy that Edina hopes to pass does not, by any means, imply that the school district is out to equip kids with iPads and other gadgets. This levy is not about equipment. It is about empowerment. It is about equipping our teachers with technology to make learning in the

classroom effective, interactive and in real-time; ensuring the funding needed to prepare our 21st Century kids for 21st Century jobs; training teachers who may not be so comfortable with some of the demands made on them in today’s classroom because of technological advancements; leveling the playing field with other area districts on what our district pays per student for technology; ensuring that our general fund is not depleted any further for things that could be financed and paid for through this levy. Finally, both of these referendums are about maintaining the standards of Edina Public Schools and its reputation as an outstanding district. I would encourage anyone who has questions to visit one of the community forums so they may equip themselves to vote on the facts and not misconceptions. Please vote yes Edina on Nov. 8. Kelli von Heydekampf Edina

Supports referendum To the editor: In the global economy and polarized political environment of today, one thing is extremely clear: Our near-term future, and the future of the country for generations to come, depends on superior education of our youth, not just in

the classroom but also in the creativity and leadership fostering opportunities that high quality extra-curriculars provide. A well-educated and well-rounded workforce and electorate is absolutely crucial for Minnesota and America. Please vote yes on the upcoming referendum to sustain funding of our schools. Paul Grangaard Edina

Edina proposed city budget a disappointment To the editor: How can Edina be satisfied with its higher 2012 budget? While Edina is proposing a 1.8 percent increase, nearby cities are drastically cutting their costs, combining their services or taking other budget-reduction actions. Golden Valley, for example, is proposing reducing its budget by 12.2 percent. Bloomington, Chanhassen and Maple Grove are each proposing to reduce their 2012 budgets as well. Shouldn’t Edina be doing the same? It seems other local cities are more attuned to our economic hard times than Edina. As a 42-year resident of Edina, I’m disappointed. Donald Montgomery Edina

Edina Public Schools seeking approval of technology levy District also asking for renewal of operating levy BY KATIE MINTZ – SUN NEWSPAPERS In 1995, a team of explorers biked across Central America for three months to study the collapse of the ancient Maya civilization. Along the way, they beamed their findings to more than 1 million students and teachers around the globe. The early internet users responded to the updates with many of their own theories behind the demise. One of the explorers, Steve Buettner, now Edina Public School’s director of media and technology services, said Maya Quest was the first time he saw students truly engaged and inspired to learn. It took two laptops, a camera and mini satellite dish to accomplish even a fraction of what he can do today with a pocket-sized smart phone. As technology continues to advance, Buettner said he doesn’t know exactly which devices will enhance education over the next decade. But as the district pursues a $45 million referendum for technology he knows technology will do one thing.

“We feel strongly that technology could provide our teachers with the tools to be exponentially more powerful with the work they do,” Buettner said, “and that our students will come here and feel like they want to be here and want to learn.”

Levy referendums Edina Public Schools is seeking voter approval of two levy referendums on the Tuesday, Nov. 8, general election ballot. The first seeks to renew the $400 per pupil portion of the school district’s existing operating referendum. The second seeks to renew and increase the capital technology levy from $1 million to $4.5 million annually. Both existing levies are set to expire in 2012. If approved, spending would begin July 1, 2012, and be completed June 30, 2023. The district will hold community meetings on the levies Tuesday, Oct. 18, and Thursday, Oct. 27, as well as host a technology open house for the community to learn more about how students are currently using technology Saturday, Oct. 29. Supt. Ric Dressen said the district’s vision is to expand personalized learning that can occur anytime and anywhere. “Technology will be essential in this effort, providing students with interac-

tive, hands-on and engaged approaches to traditional curriculum for deeper learning and skills development,” he said. The new technology levy would provide funding to integrate hardware, software, infrastructure, support and training as outlined in the district’s 2015 Technology Plan. The plan, which was developed by more than 70 staff and community members, also seeks to unleash students’ passion to be lifelong learners, to empower and enhance excellent teaching, to engage families in a partnership for education and to demonstrate excellence in service, operation and productivity.

Current technology levy Edina Public Schools was the first district to capitalize on new state legislation that allowed school districts to levy for technology upgrades in 2001. The district currently receives the least amount per pupil from its existing technology levy when compared to six neighboring suburban districts. Edina receives $122 per pupil, while Hopkins receives $719, Minnetonka receives $655, Eden Prairie receives $637, Wayzata receives $545, St. Louis Park receives $306 and Bloomington receives $273. If the new

technology referendum is approved, Edina will collect $549 per student per year. Buettner said the district has used money from its first technology levy wisely. “Everyday students and teachers are using technology to demonstrate and to deliver instruction, and also to gain deeper understanding, but that’s 10-year-old technology,” Buettner said. “We believe that that technology needs now to be refreshed, and that we also ensure now that we have a foundation of how we use that technology as it continues to transform not only our world, but in particular education.”

Proposed technology levy Buettner said many people want to know how many computers, iPads or other devices the $45 million levy will buy. While there will be some purchases, he said the focus is not the equipment, which will likely change over the life of the referendum, but ensuring that the necessary systems and training are in place to advance education. According to the district, each year, of REFERENDUM: TO NEXT PAGE

Referendum FROM PREVIOUS PAGE the $4.5 million, about 34 percent would go to staffing, 29 percent to hardware, 15 percent to software, 10 percent to the network, 9 percent to a contingency fund, 3 percent to staff development and a small amount to supplies. Buettner said educators are finding new and powerful ways to connect with students. He gave the example of “flipping.” In this practice already being implemented by some Edina teachers, lectures are prerecorded. Students are asked to watch them online for homework. In the classroom, the teacher is available to answer questions and help students work through the most difficult concepts. In order for flipping to be adopted by more teachers, Buettner said the district needs technology and staff training to record and edit the videos, a robust network to transfer the information to a secure repository, servers to store the data, internet bandwidth so that students and teachers can access it, as well as round-the-clock support to address any failures in the system. Approval of the referendum will allow that.

Budget impacts

Taxpayer impacts

The current technology levy pays for only a small portion of the district’s actual technology expenses. While the district collects about $1 million a year from the existing referendum, it is spending about $3.5 million on technology, according to Dressen. The majority of expenses – $1.7 million – are covered by the general fund. About $816,000 comes from the capital fund. The new technology levy would allow the district to redirect almost $1.2 million back to the general fund to support educational programs, services and projects, as well as $800,000 back to the capital fund, he said. It would continue to use about $500,000 from the general fund, for a total of $5 million in technology spending each year when combined with the $4.5 million referendum. Renewal of the district’s $400 per pupil operating referendum would continue to add about $3 million to the general fund budget each year. If both questions are unsuccessful, the district would lose 5 percent of its general fund annual revenue and would need to make an annual $4 million budget adjustment, according to Dressen. “This would likely result in larger class sizes, fewer programs and course offerings, stall some of what we hope to do with technology, as well as we’d probably be looking at an impact on fees,” he said.

If both questions are successful Nov. 8, the additional tax impact on a medianpriced home in Edina would be less than $15 per month, according to the district. The operating renewal would account for a slight increase per month of about $0.25 depending on the value of home. Most of the difference would be attributed to the technology levy. For the median $400,000 homeowner, the levies would add an additional $14.83 a month in taxes, or $178 a year. For the owner of a $300,000 home, the impact would be an additional $10.75 a month, or $129 a year. For the owner of a $500,000 home, it would mean an additional $18.58 a month, or $223 a year. Parent Dick Ward of Edina, who is cochairing the Vote Yes Edina committee, said it was an easy decision for him to support both referendums. He pointed to the district’s AAA bond rating – proof of fiscal responsibility – and the fact that all dollars raised by local levies stay in the district. “The majority of school funding comes from the state,” said Ward, who co-chairs the committee with his wife Sue Ward. “These individual district levies allow our schools to get funding directly from the Edina constituents. Given the current environment, it’s an opportunity to support our schools.”

As a parent of a current high school sophomore and two Edina graduates, he said he’s been encouraged to see support from across the board. “It’s not just parents but it’s community members,” Ward said. “Some of those are graduates and other members of the community who understand it’s important to have good public schools and that’s part of what makes Edina a really good strong community.” For more information on the levies, visit edina.k12.mn.us.

LOVE BLOOMS AT EVERY AGE IN THIS MUST-SEE COMEDY!

Berger FROM PAGE 1 Edina School Board. Remaining candidates are incumbent Cathy Cella, Sarah Patzloff and Leny Wallen-Friedman. Novack said he began researching Berger’s online presence when Berger gave what he called “evasive answers” to questions asked by Patch readers. Berger also blogs in the Local Voices section. At press time, Novack had published two pieces on Patch about Berger – the first attempting to connect Berger to Internet handles used on a handful of websites and the second examining the writings attributed to them that “most people would consider extreme, certainly sexist, certainly very out of center – beliefs that the average Edinan would not have,” Novack said. In a response on Patch, and in his Oct. 10 email, Berger acknowledged writing some of the items he was linked to by Novack. He denied affiliation with others. “I have acknowledged some of the writings as being my own, but don’t recognize others that were attributed to me by Mr. Novack. This allows for easy mischaracterization of any excerpts,” he said. “The few comments I have actually written we either taken out of context or were humorous comments posted to a satirical website,” Berger said. Among the pieces he acknowledged authoring in a phone interview Friday, Oct. 7, was a post on his short-lived blog The Occidental Man (theoccidentalman. blogspot.com). In an entry dated May 20, 2009, Berger wrote, “A corollary to the Unified Field Theory of Modern Politics would be that the Democratic Party has become the party of single women, soft males, and homosexuals.” He goes on to describe the “soft male” as one who “believes himself to be the New Man, free of traditions and archetypes of the past,” “empathizes with feminism,” “is an ‘equal partner’ in his marriage,” “seeks to build consensus,” and “is uncomfortable in the company of masculine men.”

“Without him, the feminist and homosexual would be far from the levers of power,” Berger wrote. Berger said the piece was part of a larger discussion on the so-called Mommy and Daddy parties. “You’re taking it out of context, but yes, the Democratic Party morphed from being the party of the Working Man to being the Mommy Party, just as the Republican Party is no longer the party of the rich, and has instead become the Daddy Party,” he wrote in a response on Patch. Novack also points to a comment Berger made on Stuff White People Like (stuffwhitepeoplelike.com), a website poking fun at the inclinations of a mostly affluent, liberal and urban set. In a response dated June 26, 2008, to an entry titled “Comparing People to Hitler,” and to previous commenters, Berger wrote, “I mean really, hasn’t enough time passed where we may begin to look at the entire record of Chancellor Hitler; both the highs *and* the lows? It’s a matter of putting things into the proper context ; )” Berger said it was a sarcastic response on a parody website, and that should be apparent. “[People think] he must be making light of the Nazis,” Berger said in a phone interview. “That’s not true. My personal actions, adopting a biracial child, having a handicapped child, none of those things fit.” Berger, a safety and risk engineer, said he was disappointed that Novack’s writings moved the conversation away from the issues facing Edina schools. In his Oct. 10 email, he also questioned Novack’s credibility, noting “his practice of sending out packets of anonymous distortions attacking local candidates of both parties.” For his part, Novack admits to a long history of working personally and for hire to take down both Democratic and Republican candidates and referendum measures. He currently heads PoliticalModerates.org, a political action committee that operates EdinaModerates.com and other websites. He said, however, his work is not anonymous and defended its accuracy.

City Council OKs $100K website redesign BY KATIE MINTZ – SUN NEWSPAPERS Edina is planning a more residentand staff-friendly website redesign. The Edina City Council gave unanimous approval, Mayor Jim Hovland absent, Tuesday, Oct. 4, to the estimated $104,500 project. The council is expected to act on a contract for the project with New York City-based JesseJames Creative at its next meeting Tuesday, Oct. 18. The website overhaul is expected to take 16 weeks to complete. Communications and Marketing Director Jennifer Bennerotte said the city has redesigned its website every five years since becoming one of the first municipalities in the region to launch one in 1997. The current site was designed in 2006. “This new dynamic website will be easy to update and modify. It will be well viewed on mobile devices and it will incorporate additional components such as e-commerce, email subscription service, video streaming and GIS,” she said. According to Bennerotte, the platform that the current website was built on was discontinued a few years ago,

causing design and maintenance limitations. Currently, all website updates must come through the communications department. JesseJames, which was selected from 21 proposals, offers a content management system that will allow city staff with limited web knowledge to make more timely updates. The platform also allows for enhanced integration of social media, multimedia, event calendars, staff directories and e-commerce options. In addition to the baseline website redesign, which will cost $60,000, the project includes $7,500 for integration of existing golf and skating registration systems, $12,000 for a new facility reservation system and $25,000 for an internal employee intranet. Bennerotte said the city should ultimately see cost savings from the project. “We have been spending annually in excess of $50,000 to maintain our beast of a website,” she said. “This is a $60,000 project. In one year it’s nearly paid for itself.” A built-in email subscriptions service will also save about $3,000 now paid annually to a third-party vendor, she said.

CITY NOTES City taking buckthorn brush this month

City receives Making a Difference Award

The Edina Park and Recreation Department will collect buckthorn in late October to help residents rid their yards of the invasive shrub. Residents may drop off buckthorn brush at a site on Ikola Way across from the Braemar Golf Dome. The dumpsite will be open 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturdays, Oct. 22 and Oct. 29, and noon to 4 p.m. Sundays, Oct. 23 and Oct. 30. Residents must show a picture ID with a current Edina address. Commercial haulers are not allowed to leave buckthorn brush at the dump unless they are accompanied by residents they are working for. Buckthorn brush must be removed from any bags, boxes or bundles before being left at the dump. Buckthorn, native to northern Eurasia, spreads quickly and displaces other, more desirable plants. It can grow on almost any site that is not continually mowed. For more information on buckthorn removal, visit EdinaParks.com.

Edina’s Communications and Marketing Department received the Slumberland Making a Difference Award during the National Television Academy of Arts & Sciences’ Upper Midwest Emmys Gala Saturday, Sept. 24. The award honors the measurable changing of one life, with one piece of video storytelling. Edina Community Channel 16 was selected for its story “The Moses Miracle.” In spring 2010, the Rotary Club of Edina brought 6year-old, cross-eyed Moses Mwaura from the slums of Nairobi, Kenya, to Edina where he underwent surgery to correct his eyes and damaged teeth. EDINA 16 followed the process and produced a documentary for its talk show “In Edina.” As part of the award, Slumberland donated furniture to the Rotary Club of Edina, which in turn donated it to one of the nonprofits it supports, the N.C. Little Memorial Hospice in Edina.

Southdale gives first look at renovations Construction to begin January 2012 BY KATIE MINTZ – SUN NEWSPAPERS Southdale Center in Edina is giving shoppers the first look at its forthcoming renovations. Mall owner Simon Property Group Inc. recently released artist renderings and details on its plan to revamp the nation’s first indoor regional shopping center. Construction on a new food court, entrance and corridor is slated to begin in January 2012. Lauren Carpenter, Southdale Center director of marketing and business development, said work would be concentrated at the entrance between Macy’s and JC Penny on the mall’s north side. “We really decided this side of the mall needs more access,” Carpenter said. The new entrance at the former Arby’s location will be widened and redesigned to include a covered doorway, large sliding glass doors and an indoor and outdoor children’s play area. “It will be just a big open, grand entrance – not as closed off, which we

Construction on the project and other mall upgrades is slated to begin January 2012 and be complete late fall 2012. The renderings show tall ceilings, new lighting, including a sky light, and new restrooms. The existing food court currently has two operating vendors. Carpenter said she

anticipates all seven spaces in the new food court will be occupied when construction is scheduled to be complete in late fall 2012. She said she could not release details about prospective restaurants at this time. In moving the food court near the entrance adjacent to West 66th Street, Carpenter said it should be more conven-

ient for employees from nearby businesses to stop in for lunch, a quick shopping trip and get back to work. As part of the renovation, the first floor corridor leading from center court to JC Penney will also be shifted to provide a more direct path to the department store SOUTHDALE: TO PAGE 26

COMMUNITY NOTES Coats for Kids drive deadline extended As of Oct. 7 the Coats for Kids drive had only collected about 4,000 coats toward its goal of 10,000. Originally scheduled to end Oct. 8, the deadline for donations has been extended to Saturday, Oct. 15. The drive is sponsored by Pilgrim Cleaners, Sun Newspapers, KARE 11, KFAN and Subway. The program accepts new and gently used winter coats for all ages to be giving to families in need. Pilgrim Cleaners owner Bonnie Engler said the recent streak of warm weather probably meant people weren’t thinking about winter coats, but she hopes the deadline extension will help the campaign come closer to its goal. Those who wish to donate can drop off coats at any of the 25 Pilgrim Cleaners locations. The charities receiving coats this year are Sabathani Community Center, Sharing and Caring Hands, Ronald McDonald House of the Twin Cities, Catholic Charities of St. Paul and Minneapolis, STEP, CEAP, Lutheran Social Services and Hope for the City. Those who wish to send a cash donation should send it to the “Coats for Kids Fund c/o Pilgrim Cleaners, 3217 85th Ave. N., Brooklyn Park, MN 55443.

The camp is free to students. Students interested in attending should contact their local Rotary club to request a sponsorship. For more information, contact planning committee chairman Grant Robinson of The Rotary Club of Edina, grantrobinson@estatecrafters.com. Info: campenterprise.org.

AYP FROM PAGE 1 staff for their use of data and collaboration to address student needs. “I think we really see the impact of people paying great attention to the data they have,” she said. In Minnesota, whether or not a school makes AYP is based primarily on student test scores. If one subgroup with as few as 20 students does not meet proficiency targets on the Minnesota Comprehensive Assessment reading or

math tests taken each spring, the entire school and district as a whole do not make AYP. In Edina, subgroups include those for American Indian, Asian, Hispanic, black, white, limited English proficient, special education and free or reduced price lunch students. The last time all subgroups at all six elementary schools, two middle schools and high school in Edina made AYP in both math and reading was 2007. In 2008, Edina failed to meet AYP goals in four cases – black students in reading, limited English proficient students in both reading and math, and free

In the Community, With the Community, For the Community

and reduced price lunch students in reading. In 2009, students in the black subgroup missed AYP in math, and students in the subgroup for free and reduced price lunch missed AYP in math and reading, making it the second consecutive year the district failed to meet the AYP reading proficiency target for students eligible for free or reduced price school lunches. As a result, federal law required the Minnesota Department of Education to designate the district as in need of improvement. As a district that receives Title I funds, it was required to implement an improvement plan using a portion of its Title I funds for staff develop-

ment. In 2010, all student groups that had not made AYP previously met their achievement targets, but students in the special education subgroup missed AYP in reading and math. Norlin-Weaver said the improvement plan, which continued last year, targets students that fall on both ends of core instructional expectations – those that have not yet achieved proficiency and those who greatly exceed it. Edina has seen continued growth in both groups, she said, bucking national trends. “It’s really about matching to the students needs,” Norlin-Weaver said. AYP: TO PAGE 27

U.S. News & World Report recently named Edina High School one of the “Best High Schools for Math and Science” in the nation. Edina was ranked 187 out of 207 qualifying high schools and is the only school in Minnesota to make the list. This is the inaugural year for the U.S. News & World Report’s ranking category for science and math. Initially, qualifying schools had to first make the U.S. News’ list of “Best High Schools,” which included 598 high schools. Eligible schools were then judged on their level of math and science participation and success on Advanced Placement and sci-

ence, technology, engineering and math course test data. Jenni Norlin-Weaver, director of teaching and learning, said the ranking is reflective of the district’s effort over the last decade to revamp science and math coursework and professional development. The district is now introducing students to STEM coursework earlier, which allows for more opportunities to take advanced classes later. The district has seen a jump in the number of students taking regular and advanced math and science courses. Norlin-Weaver also credits this rise in interest to the implementation of Project Lead the Way in sixth grade to allow for continuous, rigorous STEM coursework from middle through high school.

Today is the day to schedule your mammogram.

John Howard of Edina participated in NASA’s Climate Day Ambassador training Oct. 13-15 in Greenbelt, MD. He was one of two dozen attendees chosen from a field of national applicants to receive training on climate change science education. Howard is a member of Edina’s Energy and Environment Commission’s Education and Outreach Working Group. He is also the leader of the local Citizens Climate Lobby chapter and active with Cool Planet, an Edina-based climate organization. Edina resident Anne-Marie Cookson was one of six first violinists selected to be a guest musician with the Minnesota Orchestra at its first-ever Fantasy Camp Sept. 15-16 at Orchestra Hall. Cookson was concertmaster of her high school orchestra in Madison, Wis., a first violinist with the Wisconsin Youth Symphony and member of the Minnetonka Symphony Orchestra before putting away her violin for several years to raise four children.

Wendy Brockman of Edina is among 112 artists included in the 36th annual “Birds in Art” exhibition at the Woodson Art Museum in Wausau, Wis. The exhibit runs through Nov. 13. Warren and Mary Lynn Staley of Edina received a 2011 St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Award from the National Catholic Education Association Oct. 3 in Washington, D.C., recognizing their support of Catholic education and other philanthropic activities. Benilde-St. Margaret’s School in St. Louis Park, where the Staley’s three children attended and where they continue to support the tuition assistance program, nominated them for the award. The Staleys also support Cristo Rey Jesuit High School-Twin Cities in central Minneapolis. Elliot Upin of Edina, a senior at George Washington University, was one of three grand prizewinners of a $2,500 scholarship from Sallie Mae during its Smart Summer Sweepstakes.

FAITH NOTES When it comes to scheduling your mammogram, it’s easy to put off…and off…and off. However, making time for your mammogram can increase the chance of detecting breast cancer early, and in turn, successful treatment. So don’t put it off; join the millions of women who “make time” for their mammograms each year. Call today to schedule an appointment. We say we want faith to be a part of who they are and how they live.” Ike VanSomeren of Edina said he and a handful of parents had the same thought more than 50 years ago. For VanSomeren, faith-based education has always been important. He said his father, a Wisconsin farmer, labored on a Works Progress Administration roadbuilding crew for $5 a week during the Great Depression to give him and his siblings a Christian education. “I thought about what my dad sacrificed. We wanted to do that for our own children,” he said. Right Way Painting Solutions After one of the most brutal winters we have encountered in the past 30 years, we have all found things that need repair or replacement on our homes. Many of us have needed to put off work being done to our homes do to economic hard times. Many of us also put off projects to save money in case things got worse. Our home values have gone down which makes it hard to even think about selling our homes. The reality is that we have to keep our property in good shape to maintain our values. Painting the exterior of our homes is by far the best value to preserving our wood surfaces and windows. We can also dramatically change the appearance of the inside of our homes by updating colors. Painting woodwork is a very affordable option compared to replacing old trim around our homes. In many older homes our windows are still good, but the old stain and varnish are not holding up any more. You can save thousands of dollars by painting these windows verses replacing windows. Updating your

basement family room can also be as easy as painting the paneling. I’m Paul Moore from Rightway Painting Solutions. I’ve been in the painting business for over 20 years. Being a former Shop Teacher, I have a good background in finishing and wood replacement. We do both residential and commercial painting. We do work for several Town Home Associations, Nursing Homes and Residential Properties. We give our customers great value by being able to not just paint. We replace or repair wood, repair and reglaze older windows and reside areas that need replacement. We also repair decks and re stain decks. On the inside we repair walls, remove wallpaper, enamel wood work and paint paneling. We offer a 2 year labor warrantee on our labor, provide references and we would be happy to give you a free estimate. For all of your painting needs give us a call at 612-8392239.

Southdale FROM PAGE 19 and open up that side of the mall, Carpenter said. “The renovation will be attractive to both current and prospective tenants. With new tenants, including Michael Kors, and a renovated mall, we feel we can truly enhance the shopping experience at Southdale Center,” said Southdale Center Manager Laurie VanDalen. New anchor tenant Herberger’s is slated to open Wednesday, Nov. 9. Carpenter said Southdale Center is in the process of increasing the amount of leased square footage for next year, but can’t announce anything yet. She said other upgrades might also be in the works. “This is what we’re starting with. This is just a beginning,” Carpenter said. “Look to hear some information later in the year.” Edina City Planner Cary Teague said Simon has submitted plans for the renovation and they are under review by the building department. Indianapolis-based Simon Property Group, the largest mall owner and developer in the country, took ownership of Southdale Center in 2007 after acquiring The Mills Corporation. That company, which purchased Southdale in 2005, had planned a major redevelopment to coincide with the mall’s 50th anniversary in 2006, however, those plans failed to materialize. The last major renovation at Southdale was completed in 2002. The 125,000-squarefoot District on France addition included four restaurants and a 16-screen movie theater. The third floor was also remade to teen-oriented Urban Trendz. Currently, Southdale is anchored by Macy’s and JC Penney and has more approximately 130 specialty stores including Coach, H&M and The Apple Store. The mall will remain open during construction. Renderings of the planned renovation are on display throughout the mall. No Motels, No Hype Just Honest Pricing Everyday !

AYP FROM PAGE 22 With all students making AYP in 2011, she said the district is a step closer to getting off of the needs improvement list. To do so, all subgroups must

make AYP goals in the subject area – in this case reading – for two consecutive years. Under current No Child Left Behind rules, the district must submit another improvement plan for approval by the state. Minnesota Commissioner of Education Brenda Cassellius said the

state would apply for a waiver from No Child Left Behind mandates in November under a new plan from the U.S. Department of Education. Until then, federal law states that schools that do not meet AYP must face the same consequences as they did in previous years. If Minnesota is granted a waiver, relief from those mandates

Soccer semis, finals Section playoffs for boys and girls soccer continue with semifinals Saturday, Oct. 15, and finals Tuesday, Oct. 18. The Section 2AA boys tournament is interesting with a field that includes the state’s fourth-ranked team, Edina. Jefferson and Eden Prairie are other contenders. Edina allconference midfielder Evan Panken is out for the season with a broken foot. In Section 2AA girls, Eden Prairie is the defending champ and also the reigning state champion. In Section 6AA boys soccer, Wayzata will have challenges from Minneapolis South and Southwest. The Trojans have a dynamic scorer in Ellis Andrews. The Minnetonka, Hopkins and Wayzata girls teams have a shot in Section 6AA. Hopkins goalie Jenny Grahek is the X factor.

Football, Weeks 7-8 There are only two more dates left to determine the Lake Conference football champion for 2011. In 7 p.m. games Friday, Oct. 14, Eden Prairie will play Edina at Edina’s Kuhlman Field and Wayzata will play at Hopkins. Even though they’re on the road, Eden Prairie and Wayzata are favored in those games. The final day of the regular season is Wednesday, Oct. 19. In 7 p.m. games, Eden Prairie will travel to Wayzata and Hopkins will visit Minnetonka at Einer Anderson Field. Eden Prairie and Wayzata have owned the No. 1 and 2 spots in the Associated Press state Class 5A poll. EP’s Andrew Larson is one of the state’s top backs. Wayzata alternates two hard-running backs, seniors Antonio Ford and Erik Roti. Edina will play North St. Paul in a non-conference game at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 19, at Kuhlman Field.

TRACK RELAY CHANGE The Minnesota State High School League Board of Directors has amended its state track meet qualification rules for relays. The top two teams in each relay event from each section will advance to state.

Edina boys come up short Wayzata Trojans take Lake boys soccer title BY JOHN SHERMAN • SUN NEWSPAPERS Edina High’s boys soccer team went into last week’s Lake Conference games with a one-game lead in the standings. Unfortunately for coach Dave Jenson and the Hornet boys, their lead evaporated and Wayzata won the conference title. The Trojans visited Edina Oct. 4 and won 2-1 on a late goal in overtime, and then on Oct. 6, Edina lost 2-1 at Minnetonka. Wayzata’s Alexi Moua scored with three minutes remaining in overtime after Edina’s John Lagorio had scored the tying goal late in the second half. Both of Edina’s All-State candidates, senior midfielder Evan Panken and senior forward Jens Undlin, were sidelined. Panken has been lost for the season with a broken foot and Undlin hurt his knee early in the Wayzata match.

“We’ve just had too many injuries,” said Jenson after the Tonka match. “But hats off to Minnetonka, they came up with a great effort on their Senior Night.” Jackson Kessel scored Edina’s goal in the Tonka match. Edina will have a chance to erase that memory in the first round of the Section 2AA playoffs at 7 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 13, at Kuhlman Field. The Hornets (12-3-1) drew Minnetonka (4-9-1) in the first round. If Edina wins it will be back at Kuhlman Saturday, Oct. 15, against the winner of Thursday’s match between Eden Prairie and Shakopee. The section championship match is Tuesday, Oct. 18, at the home field of the higher seed. “Last week, we had six guys missing from our regular lineup,” said Jenson. “We keep putting on the Band-Aids, but you know you’re not going to replace the best forward in the state [Undlin] and the best player in the state [Panken]. “Having some time off gives us time to heal. We won’t die easy.”

As the No. 1 runner for the Edina High boys cross country team, Burke goes into this week’s Lake Conference meet as one of the favorites. Last week at the Victoria Lions Invitational, he finished sixth with a 5K time of 15 minutes, 50 seconds. Edina tied Eden Prairie for fourth in the team standings of the 24-school meet.

Matt Gabrielson Gabrielson, the girls cross country coach at Edina High School, finished 16th in the men’s 10-mile race on Twin Cities Marathon Sunday. His time was 48 minutes, 18 seconds.

Matt Lumbar The Edina High boys cross country runner had a breakthrough race in the Victoria Lions Invitational Oct. 4. He finished 11th overall, covering the 5K course in 16 minutes, 12 seconds.

Kate Moreton The Edina High swimmer won the 100yard freestyle during a 93-88 Lake Conference dual-meet victory over Wayzata Oct. 4. “Kate’s win gave us a great boost,” said Hornet coach Jeff Mace.

Jake Remes The Edina High football tri-captain recovered three Wayzata fumbles Oct. 6 in the Hornets’ 28-6 loss to the Trojans at Kuhlman Field.

Hornet football team faces No. 1 Eden Prairie Friday night Edina battles through series of injuries BY JOHN SHERMAN SUN NEWSPAPERS After playing second-ranked Wayzata last week, the Edina High football team draws No. 1ranked Eden Prairie at 7 p.m. Friday, Oct. 14, at Edina’s Kuhlman Field. The Hornets, who lost to Wayzata 28-6 Oct. 6, salvaged some hope with a late touchdown. Junior quarterback Mark Handberg hit junior wide receiver Marley Allison with a 15-yard scoring strike in the fourth quarter. “Our guys are hanging in there against some of the top teams in the state, and they’re not getting blown out,” said Edina head coach Reed Boltmann.” Through three games in the Lake Conference, the Hornets are 1-2. Eden Prairie (2-0 Lake, 6-0 overall) defeated Minnetonka 160 in a Lake game Oct. 6. “We will try to play solid defense against Eden Prairie and see what happens,” said Boltmann. In the Wayzata game, Edina’s best all-around player, Nick Rallis, was out with a shoulder injury. His status is uncertain for the Eden Prairie game. “We’d like to have Nick, but at the same time, we would not want to jeopardize his future,” said Boltmann. “We will let the doctors decide when and if he

can play.” Prior to losing Rallis, who was hurt during a loss to Minnetonka, the Hornets lost running back C.J. Johnson and defensive tackle Deon Dorvil to season-ending knee injuries. “C.J. was a potential 1,000yard rusher, and Deon is a monster at defensive tackle,” said Boltmann. “Nick [Rallis] has made a verbal commitment to play at the University of Minnesota next season. These are some of our best players that have been lost. “We also had three more players injured last week, Christian Dietzler, Brett Sorem and Reece Williamson. We can’t change what has happened. All we can do is move forward. “We have not lacked effort,” Boltmann added. “Everyone is giving 100 percent.” In the Wayzata game, the Trojans were a well-oiled machine with senior quarterback Nick Martin at the controls. He threw two touchdown passes to senior wide receiver Ethan Zeidler in the first half and added a touchdown on a bootleg run. Early in the third quarter, the Trojans boosted their lead to 28-0 on a run by senior Antonio Ford. “If we had made a stand late in the first half and gone into the locker room down 14-0 instead of 21-0, it could have been a different game,” said Boltmann. “Wayzata’s speed and athleticism on defense was hard to match. They run to the ball and gang tackle better than any team we have played this year. We just couldn’t get a manageable flow to

(Photo by John Sherman • Sun Newspapers) our offense. Give their coach, Brad Anderson, and his staff a lot of credit. “Playing Wayzata is always great competition for us. They’re very talented, very polished.” Boltmann didn’t have to look far to find Edina’s player of the game against Wayzata. Senior defensive back and tri-captain Jake Remes recovered three Wayzata fumbles. “In the 11 years I’ve been in the Edina program, I don’t

remember anyone doing what Jake did Friday night,” said Boltmann. Wayzata is not a team prone to offensive miscues, and the Edina coach was pleased that Remes was able to capitalize on the Trojans’ three biggest mistakes. “Our kids have great passion for the game,” said Boltmann, who added that he looks forward to playing Eden Prairie. “One of the keys for us in that game is to try to keep their run-

ning game under control,” said Boltmann. In the win over Minnetonka last week, Eden Prairie coach Mike Grant trusted his senior halfback, Andrew Larson, who scored both Eagle touchdowns and had 178 yards on the ground. Obviously, the Hornets will have to key on Larson. But at the same time, they’ll have to remember that the No. 1 Eagles are not a one-dimensional team.

Edina tops Wayzata for Lake girls swimming championship BY JOHN SHERMAN • SUN NEWSPAPERS Edina High girls swimming and diving coach Jeff Mace knew it would be close when his team faced Wayzata for the Lake Conference title Oct. 4. The Hornets came into the meet 3-0 in Lake meets and Wayzata was 2-0-1. “Winning was a team effort,” said Mace after his Hornets topped Wayzata 93-88. “We had some great performances.” Mace said the keys to winning were two victories in freestyle events.

“We had a big win from Amelia Anderson in the 500 free and a big win from Kate Moreton in the 200 free,” Mace noted. Other big wins for the Hornets were the 200-yard medley relay with the team of Madeleine Eden, Olivia Anderson, Maryellen Campbell and Emma Wittmer and the 200 freestyle relay with Leslie Gates, Paige Haller, Nikki Larson and Campbell. Edina’s Heather Laedtke finished first in the 200 individual medley while teammate Nikki Larson won the 50 and 100 freestyles. Eden added a victory in the 100

butterfly. Wayzata took first in the 400 freestyle relay with Zoe Tu, Anna Petty, Kirsten Olson and Emma Paulson. Individual highlights for the Trojans featured a first place in the 100 backstroke by Paulson and Madison Preiss’ victory in the 100 breaststroke. The Trojans finished 1-2-3 in diving with Nicole Fontaine, Brooke Fontaine and Val Wollman. Edina’s Kim Larson, Courtney Peter and Katharine Ware took the next three places.

Mackenzie Merriam had a nice swim for the Trojans in the 100 butterfly, losing to Eden on a touch-out. Paulson added a second place in the 50 freestyle in 24.03 seconds. Petty had a solid meet for Wayzata. In addition to swimming on the winning 400 freestyle relay, she took second place in the 100 freestyle and third in the 50 freestyle. Now that the Lake Conference dual meets have ended, the Lake teams will turn their attention to the postseason, which starts with True Team sectionals Oct. 15.

Stafford rises to challenge BY JOHN SHERMAN • SUN NEWSPAPERS Going into the Section 2AA girls soccer playoffs, which begin Thursday, Oct. 13, Edina High is among the favorites. The Hornets finished the regular season 8-3-5 overall and 2-2-4 in the Lake Conference. One reason for the Hornets’ success is the all-around play of senior midfielder and captain Mary Stafford. There is a bumper crop of midfielders in the Lake this year with Ellie Crowell of Minnetonka, Chelsey Ulrich and Kylie Schwarz of Minnetonka and Leah Chase of Hopkins. But Stafford’s play has given Edina equal footing against those opponents. Stafford played one of her best games in a recent 1-0 victory over Minnetonka. Her goal off a set piece in the 16th minute decided the match. Brittany Bingham took a corner kick for the Hornets and Stafford headed it into the net. “Header goals are one of my favorite parts of the game,” said Stafford. “Since I’m not very tall, it’s a timing thing and a position thing.” Edina head coach Simon Whitehead said he wasn’t surprised to see Stafford score the game-winner. “If anyone was going to score a big goal, I’m not surprised it was Mary,” he said. “She’s our guts and glory, and she will play 80 minutes a game.” Whitehead said he appreciated the way Stafford marked Crowell in that match. “Crowell has the ability to pick a

defense apart,” said Whitehead. “But Mary was able to keep her under control.” Stafford also played well in a 1-1 tie with Wayzata Oct. 4, although she had to come off with an injury. Sydney Born scored for the Hornets when she headed in a corner kick from Bingham. The Hornets closed the regular season with their second 1-0 win over Minnetonka in a rematch Oct. 6. Vivian Engen converted Bingham’s corner kick for the game-winner. Stafford is one of three Hornet captains along with Bingham and Born. “Brittany [Bingham] and I have played together since we were 10 years old,” said Stafford. “We have good chemistry together.” Edina’s only two Lake Conference losses were to Wayzata 3-1 and Eden Prairie 1-0. “The positive thing was that we gave a good effort in those matches,” said Stafford. Stafford was asked about the prospects for the remainder of the season. “Our goal is always to win the state championship,” she said. “And if you want something badly enough, anything is possible.” The No. 1 positive for Edina is its defense. Through 16 games, the Hornets have allowed only 12 goals, an average of 0.75 per game. Gina Diaz played well when Davis was out with her injury. Born and Elena Tsakakis are experienced defensive leaders for EHS.
