The Edina School Board unanimously adopted a collective bargaining agreement Tuesday, Oct. 11, with Education Minnesota/Edina that includes creation of a workload relief pool. The district’s approximately 560 teachers will have access to

If approved by city, committee will begin $370K fundraising BY KATIE MINTZ SUN NEWSPAPERS The Edina Veterans Memorial Committee is ready to see its concept soar. After more than a year of planning, it is proposing a bronze eagle statue be the focal point of a memorial at Utley Park.

The city will host an open house 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 25, to get feedback on the proposed design and location. Input will be shared with the Edina Park Board at a meeting 7 p.m. Monday, Nov. 7. The Edina City Council is expected to take action on its recommendation 7 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 15. “We’re all passionate about

seeing the memorial established and we’ve worked hard to get to this point,” said Committee Chair Mike Goergen, an Edina resident and U.S. Marine Corps veteran who served in the Vietnam War. The city has long talked about constructing a memorial

Practice rounds for roundabouts Residents get ready for 494-169 frontage road intersections BY PAUL GROESSEL – SUN NEWSPAPERS The Minnesota Department of Transportation played caddy for more than 80 people last weekend, helping them prepare for roundabouts that will hit the Interstate 494/Highway 169 interchange frontage roads. Four of six roundabouts in the highway interchange re-construction are expected to open up before the end of the year. For some residents, preparation included a practice round using golf carts. MnDOT used cones and street signs to create a mockup roundabout in the parking lot of Braemar Golf Course in Edina on Saturday, Oct. 15. After learning about roundabouts indoors, visitors had a chance use a golf cart to drive through the mock roundabout, getting ready for the real thing. A few of the visitors who took advantage of the golf-cart warm up round were thankful for the opportunity.

Isn’t It Time You Lose Those Unwanted Inches??? This is a wonderful program. I would recommend it to anyone: beginner to advanced - you will achieve a happier, healthier you!”

Other roundabout tips from MnDOT: - Yield to drivers already in the roundabouts. - Stay in your lane; do not change lanes. - Do not stop in the roundabout. - Avoid driving next to oversize vehicles. Info: dot.state.mn.us. “Everybody could use this course,” Dave Jordan of Bloomington said, after he and his wife Margit Jordan took a golf cart ride. Dave Jordan said the learning session may be intended for older adults, but young people should be taught how to use roundabouts properly, too. “I think it should be part of driver’s training,” Margit Jordan said. One of the biggest roundabout hurdles is using two-lane roundabouts, which are not as straight forward as onelane roundabouts. MnDOT workers and educated visitors from Saturday’s open house said the driver has to know which lane to be in before entering the roundabout. To go straight or right, use the right lane; to go straight, left or to make a U-turn, use the left lane, according to MnDOT.

Immersed in Italy BY MATTHEW HANKEY – SUN NEWSPAPERS Sometimes, the best classrooms have no walls. Four Convent of the Visitation School students in Mendota Heights got a firsthand experience at learning and applying classroom knowledge in the real world this summer. Eagan residents Michaela O’Brien, Mara Leighton, Jen Steichen and Edina classmate Claire Nitschke attended the Spoleto Study abroad 2011 Arts & Humanities immersion program in Spoleto, Italy, this past July. All four students concentrated in a particular study program. The Spoleto Study Abroad program offers classes in vocal music, visual arts, photography, drama and creative writing taught by faculty from around the world. Students also took classes in Italian language and Italian culture and history. Though each student had differing fields of study, all agreed the trip changed the way they viewed the world and said it helped them grow as individuals. “I learned a lot of about photography,

but also the Italian culture and the greater world around us,” said Claire, a senior. “We talked about our world vs. the world vs. my world. It’s so much bigger and there’s so much going on besides our school and our immediate lives – to see a whole new culture and to be totally immersed in it.” Claire, who took part in the photography program, said using a high-powered lens camera was foreign to her before the trip. “I was a complete novice when I started,” she said. “I had no prior training, so I learned a lot.” She said her favorite subjects to photograph were people the first time her class went out to shoot in the street. “I really enjoyed the street photography the first day,” Claire said. “All of the people were really friendly.” Many of the students said the Italian people were extremely warm to them and were gracious in allowing their photos to be taken. “Some ladies would even take us into ITALY: TO NEXT PAGE

FROM PREVIOUS PAGE their homes,” said Michaela, also a senior, who also took part in the photography program. “That’s a big difference – with how welcoming everyone was.” Jen, also a senior, had visited Italy for two weeks with her family when she was a freshman – traveling to Rome, Venice and Siena. While she enjoyed seeing the metropolitan cities such as Rome, her trip to Spoleto this summer provided a more intimate view of Italian life. “I liked how quaint and kind of quiet it was compared [to Rome] and I felt like I was in a real Italian city,” Jen said. “It was very amazing and great to experience something that quaint and that Italian.” Jen, who participated in the vocal music program, said she grew as a singer during the trip thanks to her instructor, Terri Rodes. “We had weekly performances for our classmates,” Jen said. “Our final performance consisted of everything we learned. We sang Italian opera pieces from ‘The Marriage of Figaro.’ I had no clue what I was getting myself into but because of Terri, I think my performance was stellar.” The student’s classroom work was accentuated with trips to Italian cultural centers such as Florence, Assisi, Tivoli and Siena among others. These excursions gave the students a hands-on experience of the important artistic, cultural, and historical aspects in central Italy. “I think for me especially, Michelangelo’s ‘David’ in Florence was probably my favorite,” said Mara of the famous 17-foot-tall Renaissance sculpture. “It doesn’t look the same in pictures as it

does in person.” Jen also said Florence was her favorite excursion city, but for a different reason. “I have to say I loved Florence the best because it was like a New York for Italy,” Jen said. “I just wished we had more time there because it’s a beautiful city. They had amazing shops and food.” Mara said her visual art instructor gave the class specific tasks, but allowed the students to use their own creativity and freedom in their art. “They brought us out and we were able to get the essence of a person, get the essence of Europe,” said Mara, a junior. “It was a lot of going out and kind of observing. Since it is a culture centered around art, [the people] would come up to you and watch you or sit down next to you and watch it progress.” Michaela said the trip was the best time of her life and more inspirational than she could have imagined. “I learned to be more confident with myself and just to find my passion and pursue it,” Michaela said. “If you find a passion, it’s just the way to go.” Studying abroad consisted of more than just classroom, Mara said. “I think almost in a way the people made the biggest impression on us,” Mara said. “It definitely was a way to grow in art but more so, it was just kind of a great experience in the way that it opens your eyes to the rest of the world.” She admitted her Italian was choppy, but nonetheless passable. “Even though it’s not perfect, they’ll love your for it,” she said. “Even if you use a handful of words they’ll really appreciate it.” Michaela, who admittedly struggles with learning new languages, did master one sentence in Italian. “I do know how to say, ‘Can I take your picture, please?’” she said.

Goodbye polio, thanks Rotary Rotary Club of Edina part of effort to eradicate crippling, deadly disease BY WOODROW “WOOJ” BYUN GUEST COLUMNIST In October, we observe both World Polio Day and the birthday of Dr. Jonas Salk, who developed the world’s first safe and effective vaccine against this crippling and potentially fatal disease. We also celebrate the fact that the world is on the verge of eradicating one of the most feared diseases of the 20th century. When Rotary launched its push to end polio in the 1980s, the wild poliovirus crippled nearly 1,000 people every day. Since then, Rotary and its partners in the Global Polio

Eradication Initiative have reduced the incidence of polio by 99 percent and the push continues. This year, India has the lowest number of polio cases in history. We are on the brink of ending polio once and for all. Despite this tremendous progress, children in some developing countries continue to be infected. Therefore, Rotary and its partners must reach every child in some of the most challenging regions of the world with the oral polio vaccine. But the greatest challenge to the polio eradication effort is funding. In response, Rotary is working to raise $200 million to meet a $355 million challenge grant from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. All of the resulting $555 million will support crucial immunization activities in countries where polio still threatens children. Rotary club members world-

To the editor: In an online comment to your Sept. 28 story “Burning issue: Edina considers swapping park’s wood burning fireplaces for gas,” one writer obviously feels that one has the right to have outdoor wood burning fires in their backyards, and according to the Edina ordinance, they do. This has not always been the case. It is a fairly new phenomenon. Being an Edina property owner and taxpayer, I feel that I have the right to be able to breath clean air and to be able to enjoy my yard, deck, porch and have my windows open

without wood smoke permeating everything. The right to clean air should take precedence over the right to have recreational wood fires. Gas fireplaces would be a good alternative. Catherine Reeves Edina

wide already have raised $180 million of the $200 million challenge. Over the past 26 years, Rotary’s 1.2 million members in 200 countries and regions have contributed more than $1 billion and countless volunteer hours to help immunize more than 2 billion children in 122 countries. Rotary also reaches out to governments worldwide to obtain vital financial and technical support. Since 1995, donor governments have contributed in excess of $8 billion to polio eradication, due in part to Rotary’s advocacy efforts. Locally, the Rotary Club of Edina contributes to the efforts to eradicate polio. Each week, our club makes a gift to Polio Plus – a multi-million dollar initiative to immunize all of the world's children against polio – in our speaker’s honor. In addition, the Rotary Club of Edina’s annual contributions

to The Rotary Foundation contribute to polio eradication initiatives. In fiscal year 2010-2011, the Rotary Club of Edina contributed $82,154 to The Rotary Foundation, ranking first among the 60 Rotary Clubs located in District 5950, comprising central and southwestern Minnesota. The commitment of Rotary volunteers worldwide demonstrates the extraordinary role civil society can play in improving global health. In honor of World Polio Day, Rotary clubs around the globe are doing their part to raise awareness and critically needed funds to vanquish this disease forever. Once eradicated, polio will join smallpox as the only two human diseases ever eradicated, fulfilling Rotary’s promise to create a polio-free world.

board to that committee. He not only knows the subject and the process, but also has participated in three school district Budget Reduction, Reallocation and Revenue Generation task forces, all of which brings a wealth of experience and instant knowledge to the community. In addition, Leny has an analytical and sharp mind that questions and seeks answers to complex and difficult issues. He can sort through the irrelevant and get to the heart of an issue with ease. He’s not a status quo individual, but one that seeks innovative and creative solutions to today’s vexing problems that face our school district.

I urge you to support Leny K. Wallen-Friedman for the Edina School Board. He’s experienced, knowledgeable, and prepared for immediate positive results. Thomas Spaeth Edina

Should we ticket high-rolling speeders like Switzerland?

Letters

In honor of Andy Rooney recently signing off of “60 Minutes” for the last time, I’m going to make a few curmudgeon observations of my own. He’s a little more seasoned than I am, so bear with me while I clasp my hands over my desk and calmly sound off. Do you ever notice there seem to be a lot of drivers who can afford to speed? Or, maybe they just don’t get pulled over. Either way, they can risk getting a speeding ticket. Whenever I’m driving, on Highway 169 especially, those who speed past me are driving nice, expensive cars. Sure, I try to keep pace with traffic and I teeter over the speed limit like anyone else, but when I get passed, it’s by a car nicer than mine. That’s not difficult, though. I drive a 10-year-old Mazda. The parade of high school students who pulled out of the city hall parking lot after a recent city council meeting they had attended for a civics class had nicer cars than I ever had. Maybe their parents owned them. Maybe not.

approved, we have seen a tremendous change in how technology impacts our lives. As technology has become an integral part of society, it is all the more important that our students have access to current and relevant technology to prepare them for college and the workplace. The Edina School District has a long record of responsible fiscal man-

PAUL GROESSEL Eden Prairie Community Editor

Regardless, money buys the fast lane, it seems. The simple equation is expensive cars means the driver has a padded income, therefore a $145 speeding ticket is not a big deal. Maybe the guy who flies by me in a Cadillac took on too much debt and is running from repo men. I know everyone in a nice car doesn’t have mountains of money or even a little bit of expendable income. But, when they’re passing you going 80 in a 65, you don’t want to give them the benefit of the doubt. It wouldn’t help my Mazda’s fledgling ego. Republicans would call for a flat ticket fine. Or maybe no speeding limit at all. Get off the road, Uncle Sam – you shouldn’t be driving at this age, anyway. Knowing nothing about the interact budget aspects of public safety and department of motor vehicle cash flow, here’s my pipe dream: Minnesota could get rid of the tiered fees for licenseplate tabs – which is based on the price of the car. That could be flat fee, which would probably be cheaper for many people. But, we should determine speeding ticket fines based on three things: how fast the driver is going, the average

e k l y

FROM PAGE 7 system like Switzerland? The Swiss fine their speeders based on how fast they were going – and their income. Last year, that law led to one Swede facing a $960,000 speeding ticket after taking his 570-horsepower Mazda for a 180 mph joyride. Allegedly, of course. Here in the United States and Minnesota, Democrats would probably like the ranked ticketing system. It’d be a redistribution of road rage.

miles-per-gallon the vehicle gets and the cost of the car. If you have an expensive gas-guzzler and you get caught going 100 mph, a portion of the ticket would go to state as usual, and the rest would go into an investment fund that would help finance future nuclear power plants. Like it or not, we’re going to run out of oil sooner than you’d like to think, and that’s going to throw a wrench in just about everything we do here in the suburbs. Since alternative energy is in its infancy, I’m guessing nuclear power will play a huge role in saving our ridiculously convenient lifestyle. I mean, a piece of uranium the size

S a v i n g s !

S u p e r

of a golf ball (some have estimated as small as half the size of a ping pong ball) is enough to meet one person’s energy needs for a lifetime. That’s for everything. Car, jet-fuel and toaster. If you search “golf ball uranium” online, you’ll find some sources. Consume at your own digression. Anyway, that’s a whole different column. For now, please, take it easy on the road is all I’m really saying. I’ll try to do the same.

Confessions of a Heartburn Victim DOCTORS AGREE — a recent clinical study proves AloeCure® instantly makes heartburn, acid-reflux, constipation, gas, bloating, diarrhea and other stomach nightmares virtually VANISH!

By Ralph Burns; “Former” acid reflux sufferer Here’s My Story: I've Suffered With Acid Reflux for Almost 40 Years Now. Unless you experience it; you can’t imagine how horrible it is. Every time I ate spicy foods I would get what I called "ROT GUT". Like something was rotting in my stomach. But now I can eat anything... No matter how spicy. Even if I never could before. Let me explain… For the better part of my life; I purposely avoided a lot of foods. Especially ones with even a tiny bit of seasoning. Because if I didn't, I’d experience a burning sensation through my esophagus— like somebody poured hot lead or battery acid down my throat. Add to that, those disgusting "mini-throw ups" and I was in "indigestion hell".

What was I gonna do? Keep taking the pills, or suffer with problems that could ultimately be my demise”. Doctors put me on all sorts of antacid remedies. But nothing worked. Or if they did, it would only be for a brief period. And then boom! My nightmare would return. Sometimes, I felt like I was dying. The pain was unbearable and nothing could make it stop. But then my wife, who occasionally suffered with the same problem; gave me one of her prescription acid blockers. It was a miracle. I felt like I could live again. Because before that, I was just miserable. I wanted to kill myself. But thankfully, it worked, and worked well. I felt great, until about one year ago; when I read an FDA warning that scared the heck out of me. It went something like this… FDA WARNING! Using proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) on a long term basis, increases your risk of hip, bone and spinal fractures. That's a particular concern to me, since many acid blockers are PPI's. I've gone through two back surgeries and bilateral hip replacements. I had to ask myself, could PPI's have been responsible for my medical woes? After all...

“The Recommended Treatment for Prilosec®, Prevacid® and Other PPI's is Only 14-DAYS, I Took Them for 14 YEARS!” I was “between a rock and a hard place”. Stop using the PPIs and I'm a “dead man in the water”. It would be unbearable. I wouldn't be able to eat anything. I’d have to go on a water diet. But that FDA warning was scary. I knew I had to stop or else risk developing spinal stenosis. My mother had that. And I watched her die a horrible death. Her spine just fractured. It was the worst death. She didn't deserve that. And neither do I. I had to quit. So I stopped taking PPI's for a day or so. But my indigestion was worse than ever. I would rather take the chance of a spinal fracture than to live like that again. I tried everything. Even started using home remedies like Apple cider vinegar. But it just felt like I was pouring even more acid down my throat.

63 year old Ralph Burns enjoying a spicy-hot portion of Lobster Fra Diavolo. Just 15 minutes after taking AloeCure® I used to get what I called ‘Rot Gut’, like my stomach's rotting out!”

Then one day at dinner, a friend of mine said "why don't you try an aloe drink?" I said "aloe drink"? Jeez. That doesn't sound good at all!” The next day he brought me a case of something called AloeCure®. I was skeptical, but I was desperate! So instead of being an ingrate I decided to try it. I was shocked! AloeCure® tasted pretty good too. It has a pleasant grape flavor that I actually enjoy drinking. I decided to experiment. I stopped taking the PPI's altogether and replaced it with a daily diet of AloeCure®. Then something remarkable happened… NOTHING! Not even the slightest hint of indigestion. And here’s the best part. The next day we had Italian food — my worst enemy. But for the first time in 40 years I didn't get indigestion without relying on prescription or OTC pills and tablets. Finally, I just didn’t need them anymore! I was so thrilled; I wrote the AloeCure® company to tell them how amazing their product is. They thanked me, and asked me to tell my story... The story that changed my life. I said “Sure, but only if you send me a hefty supply of AloeCure®. I just can't live without it." But don't believe me. You have to try this stuff for yourself. I recommend AloeCure® to anyone who suffers with the same problem I did. It gives you immediate relief. You'll be grateful you did. I sure am. It's the best thing that's happened to me in a long, long time. TRY IT 100% RISK-FREE! The makers of AloeCure® have agreed to send you up to 6 FREE bottles PLUS 2 free bonus gifts with every order— they’re yours to keep no matter what. That’s enough AloeCure® for 30 days of powerful digestive relief, absolutely FREE! But hurry! This is a special introductory offer, reserved for our readers only. Call Now, Toll-Free!

– a war memorial committee was even formed in the mid-1940s – but serious movement came after Goergen approached city staff in fall 2009. An 11member volunteer committee was established in early 2010 to lead the project. Edina is one of few cities in the metro without a veterans memorial, however, a memorial flagpole dedicated to the city in 1955 by the former American Legion Edina Post 471 stands at Utley Park. The park at the intersection of 50th Street and Wooddale Avenue was also proposed for its location on the Fourth of July parade route and reflective nature along Minnehaha Creek. With a $30,000 contribution from the city, the committee selected architect Bob Kost with Short Elliott Hendrickson Inc. to help design the space at Utley Park. In addition to a statue, the preliminary plan includes a 1,200-square-foot granite plaza, three illuminated flagpoles, benches, a rain garden and other plantings. Sculptor Robert Eccleston of Lake Placid, N.Y., was selected to design the sculpture that will be the focal point of the memorial. The proposed bronze eagle carrying a wreath would be perched atop a granite memorial wall featuring emblems from the six branches of the service, a message thanking all Edina veterans, and the names of those killed in action. From the beginning, the committee did not want to use a human figure for the statue since it could favor a branch of service or war. Goergen said the eagle is universal. “Every military branch of service uses an eagle in some part of their insignia. It’s

a national symbol of our country and we thought it was a better fit for our memorial,” Goergen said. “We’re honoring all veterans who served regardless of when they served.” To date, the committee has identified 32 fallen soldiers from World War I, World War II, the Korean and Vietnam wars to be named on the memorial. Goergen said space would be left on the memorial for any soldiers missed and for those that pass in future wars. Goergen said though the committee has established a preliminary design, it is still seeking input. He said ideas can be incorporated into the plan and existing elements can be refined. If the city council approves the design and location next month, he said the committee would begin fundraising. Construction of the memorial is estimated at $370,000 and will receive no additional city funding. The entire amount must be raised before construction can begin. At the city council meeting, park staff is expected to present a detailed project budget including construction and longterm maintenance plan with an estimate of future maintenance expenses. When the effort began in the summer of 2010, the goal completion date was set for the Fourth of July in 2012. “I’m not ruling it out,” Goergen said. “The whole committee is still optimistic we’re on the timeline.”

Film FROM PAGE 1 made the film in an attempt to better understand his 17-year-old brother’s mysterious shooting death on Halloween 1992. The film follows Schlegelmilch on a 10-day trip back to his Wisconsin hometown in 2009 in search of answers. He had not made a film since his student work in film studies at the University of WisconsinMilwaukee. “I think it’s pretty exciting not only because I manage the theater but also because Edina is ready for a film festival,” said Schlegelmilch, noting increasing attendance at Edina Cinema’s foreign and independent film showings. It forgoes big blockbuster movies. The Edina Film Festival will screen eight entries ranging from current feature-length independent films, Sundance and Telluride-screened shorts to an Orson Welles classic. “We’re really quite excited by the line-up that we’ve assembled,” said John Swon, festival committee chair and member of the Edina Art Center Board. The five-member Edina Film Festival Committee began planning for the event more than two years ago. The city approved the Edina Art Center Board’s

In the Community, With the Community, For the Community

request to sponsor the festival in April 2010, but fundraising delayed the first event by a year. Swon said the committee is excited to see it finally take off. Ticket sales benefit the Edina Art Center. “We’re doing this really for two reasons,” he said. “One is to be a potential fundraiser for the Edina Art Center. We’ve taught thousands and thousands of students there, but one area of the arts we haven’t been able to pay a lot of attention to is film. So another goal is to give exposure to film and give emphasis to local filmmakers.” He said highlights include Orson Welles’ 1946 film “The Stranger,” which won an Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay. It will show 9:15 p.m. Friday, Oct. 21, and will be introduced by film preservationist and historian Bob DeFlores. Swon also recommends “Valley of the Sun” showing 9 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 22. Among writers of the screenplay is Edina native Mark Bremhorst, who now lives and works in Los Angeles. The film stars “CSI: Miami’s” Johnny Whitworth as a former adult film star forced to move back in with his parents in an Arizona retirement community. Swon said “Absence/Presence” provides a powerful punch. Initially, Schlegelmilch intended to create the project just for himself, but some family members who saw the 119-minute docu-

mentary encouraged him to present it to film festivals. It has since screened at the Flyway Film Festival in Pepin, Wis., the Oneota Festival in Decorah, Iowa, and the Driftless Film Festival in Spring Green, Wis. It made its Minnesota debut this spring at the Minneapolis-St. Paul International Film Festival. “There was not a dry eye in a packed house,” said Swon. “I feel fortunate that we happened to luck into having this relationship with him.” In the documentary, Schlegelmilch explores circumstances surrounding the death of his brother and eventually concluded that he committed suicide. He said for a long time, family members did not speak of the death, but the film has helped change that. He said he has heard from others who’ve contemplated suicide about the difference it made in their lives as well. “Overall its done nothing but help our family, which was the main purpose of me wanting to try and do this. Everything now is just kind of an added bonus,” he said. Schlegelmilch will answer questions following the showing of “Absence/Presence.” Swon said representatives from some of the other films would also be present for questions. Tickets cost $10 for two hours, which could include one feature or a feature and some short films.

Edina Film Festival Line-up The following films will be shown at the first Edina Film Festival 7 p.m. to close Thursday, Oct. 20, to Saturday, Oct. 22, at Edina Cinema, 3911 W. 50th St. The films are not rated by the Motion Picture Association of America. • “Incredibly Small” (2010), 7 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 22 – Amir, an escalator attendant by day and aspiring sculptor by night, and Anne, a law student from a well-to-do family, are an unlikely pair. Against the odds, they decide to move into a shabby 300-square-foot apartment together. But things don’t exactly go as planned. The combination of their small apartment, their threateningly charming neighbor next-door and unexpected visitors from the past make them realize that maybe they aren’t as perfect for each other as they previously had thought. • “I’m Having Difficulty Killing My Parents” (2011), 7 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 22 – It’s not that T.J. doesn’t love his parents, it’s just that he’s trying to kill them. Contract FROM PAGE 1 587 substitute days to use for additional time to work with teams, complete assignments or develop plans, under the 2011-2013 contract. The district will fund the pool with $63,565 to cover substitute pay over the two-year period. Education Minnesota/Edina President Rob Gardner, an English teacher at Edina High School, said outside of compensation, the top concern for teachers is the workload. Gardner said Edina teachers are dedicated to doing a great job, which often means spending a lot of time outside the classroom analyzing student data, working on instruction practices and learning new technology. “Really the job for teachers has expanded greatly in terms of the time commitment,” he said. “We were working with the district cooperatively to find some solutions to address concerns about the increasing workload.” Director of Human Resources and Operations Gwen Jackson said the pool was recommended by a workload taskforce formed following 2009-2011 contract negotiations. The district was fined $230,000 in 2010 for missing the state’s former Jan. 15 settlement deadline after negotiations for the previous contract stalled over workload issues. In that contract, teachers also gained three clerical days for teacher planning as well as compensation for completing certain duties outside of regular teaching hours, such as

writing college recommendation letters. According to a memorandum of understanding included in the new contract, each teacher will have access to up to one day of workload relief per year between Oct. 1 and May 15. The days must be scheduled three days in advance. Teachers must be present on district property during workload relief days unless pre-approved by building administration. Teachers are not required to document how they used their day. “The other thing we’re also very cognizant of is making sure our teachers are in front of our students, and not as many substitutes,” Jackson said. The 2011-2013 contract allows for teachers who have used four or fewer substitute days over the course of the school year to submit a request for reimbursement at the daily substitute rate. Gardner said the workload taskforce would continue to meet and make recommendations during the contract period. The teachers union ratified the agreement with 89 percent approval Sept. 22 and 23. “Both Education Minnesota/Edina and the district worked really hard to make sure we had an agreement early and yet an agreement that was meaningful to both sides,” Gardner said. The two-year agreement effective July 1, 2011, through June 30, 2013, includes a soft salary freeze for 2011-2012 and a 1.35 percent increase in 2012-2013. Teachers who receive no salary increase in 2011-2012 because of their place on the salary schedule will receive a $500 onetime payment. Effective Jan. 1, 2012, the district con-

tribution for health insurance will increase 1.25 percent. The following year it will increase by 3.5 percent. The complete contract has a two-year compensation increase of 5.44 percent. “I just want to thank the teachers for their professionalism and getting this done in a timely basis, and also their understanding of our financial position and their willingness also to take some one-time funds as part of this settlement,” School Board Chair Randy Meyer said. In addition to the teachers contract, the Edina School Board also unanimously approved contracts with the superintendent, a group of supervisors and health service associates Tuesday night, completing all open contracts for the year

Superintendent contract Supt. Ric Dressen’s new three-year contract provides a 0.75 percent salary increase in 2012-2013, a 1.5 percent increase in 2013-2014, and a 0.75 percent increase in 2014-2015. Under his previous three-year contract, Dressen was supposed to receive 2.5 percent salary increases each year but later agreed to no increase in 20102011 and a 0.82 percent increase in 20112012 due to budget constraints. “At the second year of that contract, Dr. Dressen requested a salary freeze for two years and we thank him, and also the administration, which followed in step with that,” Meyer said. He noted that under the new contract, the $197,813 salary Dressen will received in the final year is still less than offered in the agreement approved three years ago. In 2012-2013, Dressen will make

$193,440. In 2013-2014, he’ll make $196,341. Dressen’s contract was also modified to increase a required six-month notice of retirement or resignation to the board to nine months.

Supervisors contract The Classified Supervisors, Confidential Employees and Other Support Staff Group’s new two-year agreement effective July 1, 2011, through June 20, 2013, includes a 0.4 percent salary increase in 2011-2012 and 1 percent increase in 2012-2013. The group includes employees in human resources, custodial and transportation supervisors and the superintendent’s support staff. Jackson said the group had a salary freeze in the 20102011 school year. Employees in the group also received an increase to their severance packages. The amount paid per each year of service was increased from $500 to $750 per year. The total contract represents a 2.42 percent increase, according to the district.

Health service contract The Health Service Associate Organization’s new two-year agreement with the district, effective July 1, 2011, through June 30, 2013, includes no salary increase in 2011-2012, and a 1 percent salary increase in 2012-2013. Effective Jan. 1, 2012, the district will increase its contribution for health insurance 1 percent. The following year, the district contribution will increase 5 percent. The total compensation package is a 3.02 percent increase over the two years.

CITY NOTES GrandView District open house Oct. 27 Community members are invited to participate in an open house to help determine the future of Edina’s GrandView area. The open house is 6-8:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 27, at the Edina Senior Center, 5280 Grandview Square, and is a follow-up to workshops held in September. “The September workshops were extremely successful,” GrandView Small Area Planning Committee Chair Kevin Staunton said. “This month, we will transition our efforts by reacting to design concepts, hearing from a wide variety of groups and beginning to narrow in on specific ideas.” At the open house, community members will be asked to react to concepts being considered by the GrandView Small Area Plan Steering Committee. During the open house, small group discussions will be facilitated, allowing for public feedback. Staunton said no final decisions have been made yet, so it’s important to hear many voices. Earlier in the week, the steering committee will also hold meetings with vari-

How does your chimney look? Are the bricks crumbling? Does it have White or Black exterior staining? Are you afraid to use your fireplace because you’re not sure how safe it is? When was the last time you used it? The professionals at AirBroom Minnesota Fireplace and Air Duct Cleaning in Excelsior can restore both your confidence and your chimney. Did you know that water causes more damage to masonry chimneys than fire? Your chimney, unlike other parts of your house, is constantly exposed to the elements. They are generally constructed of brick, mortar, tile, steel, and iron. All of these materials suffer deterioration as a result of prolonged contact with water. Freeze and thaw cycles so familiar here in the Twin Cities cause stress on the chimney. Water that has penetrated expands and contracts. Left unchecked it will cause interior and exterior damage to your home and masonry chimney. Some of the damage that can be caused includes: 1) spalled and broken exterior brickwork, 2) deteriorated masonry and metal firebox assemblies, 3) rusted dampers, 4) decayed mortar, cracked or missing flue liners, and in the worst case scenario damage to adjoining walls, ceilings, and woodwork. There are three main ways to prevent water damage. 1) Install a chimney cap. This is the most inexpensive measure to prevent water penetration to the flue and inside chimney elements. We sell and install locally manufactured caps for as little as $99. 2) Repair or replace a damaged chimney crown. The crown sits atop your chimney and covers and seals it from the flue liners to the chimney edge. Many chimneys are built with an inadequate crown constructed from common mortar mix. Mortar is not designed for and will not withstand years of prolonged moisture exposure without cracking and chipping which allows water to penetrate the chimney. A proper crown is constructed of a Portland

cement mixture and formed to provide an overhang drip edge. This assures the water will shed helping to prevent erosion in the mortar and brick of the chimneys surfaces. Keeping the crown “watertight” and shedding away from the sponge like masonry elements that the chimney is built of is the most important element to preventing deterioration. At AirBroom Minnesota we use the industry leading line of Saver products to build and repair chimneys. Use of these products allows us to pass on manufacturers material warranties of up to 15 years to our clients. 3) Waterproof your masonry chimney and crown. Most masonry is porous and will absorb large amounts of water. Brick acts like a sponge absorbing water and wicking it to the chimney interior. Products we use are specifically developed for use as waterproofing agents on masonry chimneys. These are vapor permeable – which means they allow the masonry to breath out but not in. This allows water that has penetrated the chimney to escape while preventing additional water from entering from the outside. Non vapor permeable sealers commonly available should never be used because they trap moisture inside actually accelerating deterioration. We use a special permeable sealer with a 10 year consumer warranty to protect your chimney. Doing this before deterioration occurs can save you hundreds or even thousands of dollars in future repairs. Water damage to chimneys is usually a slow subtle process. The problem is generally not obvious until it has become quite serious. Although these prevention measures may cost you a few dollars they can save you a lot more by preventing large future masonry repairs. The Hartmann’s at AirBroom Minnesota in Excelsior offer free no obligation repair estimates in the Western Metro area. Call John, Jim, or Lynda today to arrange a free no obligation estimate. Football playoffs Two Lake Conference football teams, Eden Prairie and Wayzata, are among the favorites as the Class 5A football playoffs begin with 7 p.m. games Tuesday, Oct. 25. Eden Prairie is a contender in Section 6. Also in the title picture are Minnetonka and Shakopee. The Eagles have used a strong ground game all season with senior halfback Andrew Larson averaging slightly more than 10 yards per carry. Minnetonka’s hopes hinge on a stingy defense that held Eden Prairie to its lowest point total of the season in a 16-0 Eagle victory. Wayzata is favored in Section 5, but will have competition from Northwest Suburban Conference powers Champlin Park and Osseo. The Trojans have a gang-tackling defense and a smooth quarterback, senior Nick Martin. Wayzata’s other playmakers are wide receivers Jeff Borchardt and Ethan Zeidler and running backs Antonio Ford and Erik Roti.

Boys cross country The Eden Prairie, Edina and Wayzata boys cross country teams are all ranked among the top six in state, but no more than two of them will represent Section 6AA at the state meet. The section race will be Wednesday, Oct. 26, at Gale Woods Farm in Minnetrista. Wayzata’s Josh Thorson leads the individual contenders and will be challenged by Edina’s Will Burke, Minnetonka’s Kyle Anderson, Hopkins’ John Klecker and Wayzata’s Connor Olson.

Girls cross country Team favorites in Section 6AA girls cross country are last year’s champion, Eden Prairie, and last year’s runner-up, Wayzata. Wayzata ninth-grader Anna French and Edina senior Piper Bain are in the running for the individual title along with Eden Prairie’s Hannah Jeter and Carlin Schulz, and Emily Knapczak of Armstrong. – COMPILED BY JOHN SHERMAN

Hornets don’t give up in 35-7 Lake loss to Eden Prairie Grant’s Eagles remain spotless in 2011 BY JOHN SHERMAN – SUN NEWSPAPERS Edina High’s football record dipped below .500 for the first time this fall after a 35-7 loss to Eden Prairie Oct. 14 at Kuhlman Field. The Eagles came into the game 6-0 and ranked No. 1 in state in Class 5A. They maintained their ranking against a tough Hornet defense that scrapped for every yard. Andrew Larson, Eden Prairie’s star halfback, scored the first touchdown on a 62yard run and the second on an 11-yard run as the Eagles took a 14-0 first-quarter lead over the outmanned Hornets. Edina has lost four defensive starters to injuries, including All-State candidate Nick Rallis, who had an operation to repair a separated shoulder this week. Larson was quick to praise EP’s offensive line for another good performance. “This is the best offensive line in the

state,” he said. “My grandma could have run through the holes they opened tonight. We wanted to come out and play Eden Prairie football. That means we smack ’em.” Eden Prairie head coach Mike Grant was pleased the Eagles didn’t look past Edina to the next opponent – Wayzata, which is also 7-0 following a 40-20 win Oct. 14 at Hopkins. The Eagles and Trojans were playing for the Lake title Oct. 19, as this edition was being delivered to newsstands. Edina head coach Reed Boltmann said Eden Prairie was as good as advertised in Friday night’s game. “They executed better than we did,” said Boltmann, whose team trailed 21-0 at the half. “We did OK, but we shot ourselves in the foot a few times. You can’t make mistakes against a team like Eden Prairie. There was a big interception right before halftime that put us in the hole.” Eden Prairie’s Ryan Gunderson picked off an Edina pass and took it 46 yards to the

Saturday, Oct. 15, was a great day for the Edina High girls soccer team and a frustrating day for the Edina boys team. The girls advanced to the Section 2AA title game by trouncing Eden Prairie 3-0 at EP’s Aerie Stadium. Meanwhile, at Edina’s Kuhlman Field, the Edina boys fell to Eden Prairie 3-0. Simon Whitehead, coach of the Edina girls team, said defense made the difference in his game. Hornet goalkeeper Allie Davis had a hot hand while her teammate, Sydney Born, marked EP’s leading scorer out of the game. Patty Weicht was another key defensive player, Whitehead noted. “The girls showed up and stuck to the game plan,” said Whitehead. Twenty minutes into the first half, Edina’s Vivian Engen drew a foul in the box and teammate Brittany Bingham converted the penalty kick. The next two goals for Edina were both scored by Engen and assisted by Anna Laedtke. In a 3-0 quarterfinal win over Shakopee, Edina had strong goalkeeping from Davis and goals from Engen, Born and Lara Boman. “We tried to get a lot of players into that game,” said Whitehead. Edina was playing Burnsville in the section finals Oct. 18 as this edition went to press.

Boys finish 13-4-1 Injuries to key players proved to be Edina’s undoing in the Section 6AA playoffs. After beating Minnetonka 2-0 in the quarterfinals Oct. 13, the Hornets went scoreless against Eden Prairie in the semis to finish a 13-4-1 season. All-State midfield candidate Evan Panken missed both playoff games and Jens Undlin, Edina’s leading scorer, was less than 100 percent. Undlin gave Edina a lift by scoring SOCCER: TO PAGE 30

Edina, Tonka swimmers go down to wire

FROM PREVIOUS PAGE

Hornets barely come out on top in tight race BY JOHN SHERMAN – SUN NEWSPAPERS Edina and Minnetonka have been No. 1 and 2 in the state prep swim rankings most of the season. In the Section 6AA True Team Sectionals Oct. 15 at Art Downey Aquatic Center, they raced neck and neck for the title with Edina finally winning, 1,376-1,341. No one else was a factor. Chanhassen took third with 934 points. Edina opened the meet by winning the 200-yard medley relay with the team of Madeleine Eden, Heather Laedtke, Paige Haller and Olivia Anderson. The Hornets added to their lead with Nikki Larson’s meet record in the 200-yard freestyle. Her time was 1:53.50. Edina padded its lead in the 200yard individual medley, taking the top three places with Eden, Haller and Laedtke. Kaia Grobe of Chanhassen broke Edina’s string with a win in the 50 freestyle, but Edina bounced right back in diving with Yasmeen Almog taking first and Kim Larson placing third. Nikki Larson set her second meet record, winning the 100-yard butterfly in 55.51. Isabel Wyer and Jenny Einhorn of Minnetonka placed 1-2 in the 100-yard freestyle and Emma Wittmer of Edina was third. Eden won the 500 freestyle, holding off Minnetonka’s Amelia Schilling. The winning time was 5:10.93. Edina added a first place in the 200 freestyle relay. Wittmer, Olivia Anderson, Nikki Larson and Laedtke had a time of 1:38.51. Minnetonka cleaned up in the 100 backstroke with a 1-2 finish by Wyer and Liz Kane. Kate Moreton of Edina placed third. Edina’s Olivia Anderson and Laedtke placed 1-2 in the 100 breaststroke. Anderson’s winning time was 1:04.75. Edina capped the meet with a win in the 400 freestyle relay with the team of Amelia Anderson, Wittmer, Nikki Larson and Eden.

EHS ballhawk preps for playoffs Jake Remes will always remember his big night BY JOHN SHERMAN – SUN NEWSPAPERS Years from now, when he looks back on his high school athletic career, Edina’s Jake Remes will focus on Oct. 6, 2011. That is the night he recovered three fumbles in a varsity football game. Even though the Hornets lost to Wayzata 28-6, Remes’ ball-hawking created a buzz on the sidelines and in the stands. “In the 11 years I’ve coached in Edina, I can’t recall anyone else recovering three fumbles in a game,” said Edina head coach Reed Boltmann. “One of our goals for the game was to get three turnovers,” said Remes. “I never expected I would get three myself. I was in the right place at the right time.” This week, the Hornets played the final game of the regular season Oct. 19 against North St. Paul. The game was in progress as this edition hit newsstands. At 7 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 25, the

Hornets will open the playoffs. Pairings had not been drawn at the time this edition went to press. “We have had a tough year with injuries,” said Remes. “First we lost C.J. Johnson, and then the next week it was Deon Dorvil. Then Nick Rallis got hurt. The toll keeps rising. “The injuries have hurt us, but a lot of guys have stepped in and played well.” Remes, who plays wide receiver on offense and corner back on defense, has been playing mostly defense lately because that’s where he is needed. “Against Wayzata, I was in for every play on defense,” he noted. “I don’t have a preference for offense or defense, I just want to play. “For most of my youth football career, I was a quarterback. But after ninth grade, I decided I would be better off at some other position. Last year on varsity, I played fullback, running back, wide receiver, safety and cornerback. This year I have played wide receiver and cornerback. I’m not a one-position guy.” Rallis, who is captain along with Remes and senior center Brian REMES: TO NEXT PAGE

end zone. Eden Prairie quarterback Grant Shaeffer ran 7 yards for a touchdown in the third quarter and Chris Erickson closed EP’s scoring with a 1-yard plunge in the fourth quarter. “We could have made a couple more plays tonight,” said Boltmann. “But I applaud our guys for their effort. They hung in there. Marley Allison had some nice receptions and Graham Woodward had a catch on the sidelines that was as good as any catch you’ll see at the high school level. Tory Dalbec was our defensive leader tonight. We have asked a lot of him.” Tailback John Bryan scored Edina’s only touchdown on a short run in the fourth quarter. Boltmann said he looks forward to hearing about the Eden Prairie-Wayzata game. He was not able to see it because the Hornets were playing North St. Paul in a non-conference game at Kuhlman Field. Edina had a chance to finish 4-4 overall, and given the team’s injury problems, that would be a credible performance, Boltmann said. “If we can win [against North St. Paul], we would have the chance to be the fourth seed in our section and get a home playoff game,” he noted. “We coach the same, win, lose or draw, and our kids have worked hard. “It is a tribute to our conference that we have a lot of great athletes. You look at Eden Prairie and Wayzata, and you have he No. 1 and 2 teams in the state, plus we have Minnetonka and Hopkins.” Boltmann didn’t make a prediction as to which team will win the Lake Conference Super Bowl, but he did say he thought Eden Prairie and Wayzata were evenly matched.

Soccer FROM PREVIOUS PAGE the first goal against Minnetonka early in the second half, and then Arin Arpinar tacked on an insurance goal. “We played well, but Edina was able to beat us with a couple of good counter attacks,” said Minnetonka head coach Mike Rogers. “They were just too fast for us tonight.” “After playing a scoreless first half, we held our composure,” said Edina head coach Dave Jenson. “Jens [Undlin] and Michael Murney gave us a lift in the second half. Stephen Johnson, Jackson Kessel and Arpinar played well, and Nathan Rousey got the shutout in goal.”

Edina boys take Lake title Three Hornets make all-conference team BY JOHN SHERMAN SUN NEWSPAPERS In one of the closest Lake Conference boys cross country meets ever, Edina High emerged as the champion Oct. 13 at Gale Woods Farm. As runners crossed the finish line, it was too close to call between Edina, Wayzata and Eden Prairie. In the final tally, Edina had 57 points to 62 for Wayzata and 65 for Eden Prairie. Hopkins was right on their heels with 68 and Minnetonka finished with 92. “Some of the best teams in the state were out here today,” said Wayzata head coach Bill Miles. “It is going to be an exciting section meet [Oct. 26 at Gale Woods Farm].” All five Lake Conference schools also are in Section 6AA for cross country. Wayzata took the top two individual places in the Lake meet with senior Josh Thorson winning and freshman Connor Olson finishing second. But Edina’s depth and bal-

ance produced a championship. Junior Will Burke was the first of three Edina all-conference runners, taking third overall with a 5K time of 16 minutes, 11 seconds. Also making all-conference for the Hor nets were sophomore Matt Lumbar, who placed seventh in 16:22, and senior Jake Campbell, who placed 10th in 16:28. Edina’s strong supporting cast included sophomore Luke Lumbar (14th), senior Matt Berntson (23rd), junior Peter Knoll (26th) and senior Paul Nordquist (31st). “It was a little bit windier than we expected, and the wind was definitely a factor,” Burke said. “Our goal for the section meet is to qualify for state as a team. We did it last year, and we want to get back to state and finish in the top three.” Burke ran his best time of the season, 15:49, at the Victoria Lions Invitational Oct. 4. It was a sunny day, a fast track and not as windy as the Lake meet. The Edina junior said the Hor nets’ win at the Lake Conference meet was no accident.

Remes FROM PREVIOUS PAGE Franz, is just as versatile. Rallis has played quarterback, halfback, wide receiver, linebacker and safety this season, but he’s out now with a separated shoulder. “Nick loves football more than anyone on earth,” said Remes. “Even when he’s injured he is out here every day, coaching the other guys. He knows everything we do on both sides of the ball.” Remes, 6 feet tall and 180 pounds, said he would like to play college football next season. “I have been contacted by every school in the MIAC [Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference],” he said. “Air Force Academy has talked to me, too, but nothing has come of it.” Remes has a history of football in

Edina High’s All-Lake Conference boys cross country runners for 2011 are, from left: Jake Campbell, Will Burke and Matt Lumbar. “We had two good workouts leading up to the meet,” he said. “We had a disappointing meet [at the Victoria Lions], and we redeemed ourselves here. We want to hit a peak in the section and state meets.” The Edina girls placed

his family. His grandfather, Dave Remes, played end at the University of Minnesota. Remes’ father John was a small-college All-American receiver at Cornell College in Iowa. “Football is in my blood,” said Remes, whose mother Sandy is one of his biggest fans. “My mom has basically been the administrator throughout my football career.” Remes also plays varsity baseball and Edina Junior Gold hockey. He finds time for academics, too, and scored a 29 on his ACT test. Now that the season is entering the final few weeks, nothing would please the Edina football tri-captain more than a playoff run. Eden Prairie is a heavy favorite in Class 5A, Section 6. Despite the injuries, Remes feels good about Edina’s chances. “We have already overcome a lot,” he said. “It is an honor that my teammates voted me captain. I respect everyone on this team.”

third in the Lake meet with 67 points. Eden Prairie won the title with 38 points and Wayzata had 50. Three Hornet girls made all-conference at the Oct. 13 Lake meet. Senior Piper Bain took fifth place with a 4K time of 15:21. Seventh-grader

Tate Sweeney (11th in 15:47) and junior Molly Kuhs (13th in 15:48) were the other allconference runners. Bridgit Loeffelholz (18th), McKenzie Lee (20th), Laura Schmiel (26th) and Elaine Rock (31st) rounded out Edina’s top seven.

Going for the record Edina High senior Nikki Larson sets a Section 6AA True Team record in the 100-yard butterfly during competition Oct. 15 at Art Downey Aquatic Center. Larson and her teammates edged Minnetonka for the True Team section title. (Photo by Brian Nelson • Contributing Photographer)

By: Ali Holman, co-owner of www.coreconditioningtraining.com I think we can all agree that eating is fun. Not only is it a way for us to socialize, reward ourselves and comfort ourselves, it also is the one area of fitness where people have the most trouble. Wouldn’t it be great to know that the choices you make are actually helping your fitness program? More importantly, wouldn’t it be even better to banish the word “diet” from your vocabulary? Chances are, if you are embarking on a “diet”, it will have a beginning and an end. The end is usually followed by slowly going back to old habits and ends you right back where you started. With our clients, we really encourage them to focus on a Lifestyle Change with room for “cheat meals” and realistic goals; which inevitably lead to lifelong results and without the emotional roller coaster of a diet.

Core/Conditioning Training’s List of “Fat Burning Foods”

eggs

low-fat dairy

Eggs are high in protein and low in calories. You may have heard all the warnings about eggs and your health: opt for eggwhites for the low-cholesterol, fatburning effect. Eggs also contain the vitamin B-12, a great supplement for breaking down fat cells.

Studies show that women who eat low-fat dairy products (such as non-fat yogurt and low-fat milk) three to four times a day lost 70 percent more fat than low-dairy dieters.

beans

oatmeal

Beans are one of the best sources of protein, fiber and iron. Some of the best beans to ear are: • Navy Beans • White Beans • Kidney Beans • Lima Beans

Oatmeal is loaded with soluble fiber, which helps reduce blood cholesterol by flushing those bad digestive acids out of your system. Skip the flavored oatmeals - you lose out on all the health benefits. If you must sweeten your oatmeal, do so by adding fruit.

olive oil

lean meats

Certain fats are good for you, and your body needs them. Olive oil is one of those “good fats.” It helps you burn fat and keeps your cholesterol down. One ounce of extra virgin olive oil contains about 85% of the daily value for monosaturated fat.

Search for lean meats - chicken (baked, broiled, grilled), fish and turkey - which are all high in protein. It is a good rule of thumb to consume at least one half-gram protein per pound of body weight each day. A chicken breast gets you well on your way, with about 22 grams of protein.

whole grains

interval training

Our body needs carbohydrates, despite what the fad diets tell you. Avoid processed carbohydrates such as white breads, bagles, pastas and white rice and look for whole grains that have not been processed and contain the fiber and minerals your body needs.

Interval training is defined as short, repeated bouts of intense exercise with minimal rest. You can burn major calories and get an all-over workout in less than 30 minutes. When you see people who are “cut,” chances ar they are partaking in interval training.
