BY KATIE MINTZ – SUN NEWSPAPERS Leaders from Bloomington, Edina and Richfield are hoping to remove hurdles to healthy living in their communities. Mayors from the three cities joined Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Minnesota last week to launch an 18-month health initiative. The project, called do.town, focuses on preventing illness caused by unhealthy eating and physical inactivity. “Ultimately, this is about helping people lead healthier lives,” said Dr. Marc Manley, chief prevention officer for Blue Cross. According to Manley, unhealthy eating and physical inactivity combine for the second leading cause of death and

BY KATIE MINTZ – SUN NEWSPAPERS Property tax statements mailed to Edina Public Schools residents this fall won’t show the total potential impact to their pocketbooks in 2012. The Edina School Board unanimously approved the proposed property tax levy Monday, Sept. 26, with a 4.9 percent decrease over the current year. Director of Business Services Margo Nash said the preliminary levy information from the Minnesota Department of Education does not reflect the potential renewal of voter-approved levies in the Tuesday, Nov. 8, general election. Edina is seeking renewal of its operating levy and an increase in its capital levy for technology, both of which are set to sunset in 2012. According to the district, the $4.5 million annual technology levy would increase taxes on a median $400,000 home by $178 a year. Renewal of the operating levy, which provides $400 per pupil a year, would not result in additional property taxes over the current year. The state will change the district’s levy authorization to reflect the results of the referendum vote before final levy approval in December, Nash said.

Edina team celebrates anniversary Edina Hornets Special Olympics team has provided unique opportunity for decade BY KATIE MINTZ – SUN NEWSPAPERS A group of Edina High School athletes are celebrating a special milestone. The Edina Hornets Special Olympics team is now in its 10th year of competition after becoming one of the first assisted teams to compete in Special Olympics Minnesota events. The team was formed in 2001 for students unable to participate in adapted athletics. Edina students with mild to moderate cognitive and physical impairments can compete in Minnesota State High School League adapted floor hockey, soccer and softball. Edina Public Schools Director of Special Services Penny Kodrich said there were few athletic and extracurricular opportunities for students with more significant cognitive disabilities. Working with a group of dedicated parents and newly hired special education teacher Lisa Hanson, the district

sponsored a Special Olympics team, she said. “Edina has been a bit of trailblazer moving the meter towards all participation,” Kodrich said. “That is one of the hallmarks of the Edina community and the Edina schools. We really strive toward equity and for all children to experience their maximum potential.” Over the past decade, the Edina Hornets have had 20 athletes. Students can join as ninth-graders and continue through age 21. They bowl in the fall, swim in the winter and do track and field in the spring. Parent Pat Sandberg-Leih of Edina, who helped start the team, said it has made a world of difference for participants like her daughter Corbin Leih, now 27. “The confidence level we could see in the kids, they just seemed so proud of themselves,” she said. “We had never experienced it with our kids before.” It wasn’t always an easy path. Coach Hanson, who came to the district with several years experience coaching Special Olympics, said in order for many Edina athletes to follow the rules of the game, they need assistance on the field.

Who Else Wants To Lose 12–30 lbs. In 12 Weeks Or Less? “The program is not just about weight loss; it’s about lifestyle changes concerning diet, exercise and fitness.” I feel that I am not just a number here. The staff know me as an individual. Among the positive changes: I am stronger, more flexible and truly more fit.

Hornets FROM PREVIOUS PAGE A coach might help an athlete hold the starting position in track or monitor behavior on the bowling lane. At first, Special Olympics disqualified athletes for this assistance. Parent Maureen Moo-Dodge said her daughter Lauren Dodge, now 26, had tried to join Special Olympics before Edina, but was considered too disabled. “That kind of blew my mind,” MooDodge said.

In the Community, With the Community, For the Community

The district worked with the organization to allow coaches to be on the field; becoming one of the first Special Olympics Minnesota assisted teams. “That was the first time anyone recognized this wasn’t cheating. This wasn’t extra assistance. This was just what’s needed for these athletes to compete,” Hanson said. Many of the athletes had never done anything before where their family and friends could sit in the stands and cheer for them. Moo-Dodge said for her daughter, a sense of belonging and pride came along with getting to wear the Edina uniform. “We’ve had neighbors come watch her

events. She really feels great and that’s what the Special Olympics was all about,” Moo-Dodge said. “Special Olympics is one of the happiest places in the world but I probably cry there more than anyplace else because it’s just so unbelievable.” “Edina has been very unique in doing this and really responding to the need of a whole group of kids that cannot participate in team athletics but can be an athlete at their own skill level,” Sandberg-Leih said. After their daughters graduated, the women started another assisted Special Olympics team, the Fireflies, now coached by Hanson’s husband Steve Crandell.

Edina High School remains the only metro high school to offer both Special Olympics and adapted athletics, Hanson said. This fall, there are six students participating in bowling. Hanson said she is proud to work in a district that is committed to supporting a program that does not affect many students, but makes a huge impact on those it does. Kodrich said for the annual cost of about $10,000, the return is tremendous. “It doesn’t just impact the lives of the athletes, it transforms the lives of everyone they’ve touched,” she said. “Many lives have been touched over the last 10 years.”

Growing up in Edina: A pet horse on Brookview Edina Museum exhibit featuring childhood history opens Oct. 29 BY CHUCK GILBERTSON GUEST COLUMNIST I was 11 years old in 1951, and I wanted to be a cowboy. About a mile from my house in Edina was McNellis Riding Stable at 66th Street and France Avenue. I rode my bike out to the stables one day and asked Mr. McNellis if I could have a job. “Yes,” he said. “I cannot

pay you, but if you want to go riding after you are done working, you can.” When I got home from work the first day my mother would not let me in the house as my tennis shoes and jeans were covered with manure. Mom hosed me down. My dad asked me all about it and was pleased that I had a job. I spent the entire summer working for Mr. McNellis. At that time, 66th and France was about the end of Edina, as far as residential communities were concerned. Southdale Center did not exist. Copper was my favorite horse. He was good humored and easy to ride. Mr. McNellis

taught me how to bridle and saddle the horses. Quite often he would let me go with him on trail rides. Sometimes Mr. McNellis would let me ride Copper out to the fields in the morning to bring the other horses back to the stable. I felt like a real cowboy. Summer vacation was coming to an end. Mr. McNellis told me he was going to sell Copper for $75. I rode my bike to the bank and withdrew $75 of my paper route money. Then I went back to the stable and gave Mr. McNellis the money. Riding Copper home down France Avenue I was proud as could be. When I turned on to Brookview

Avenue where I lived, all the neighbor women came out in the yards to watch me. My mom came out the front door with her fist in her mouth, which she did when she was nervous. She said, “Oh, Chuckie, what have you done now?” I put Copper in our one-car garage and left the door open. I tied rope back and forth across the opening. A small crowd gathered by my homemade horse stall. My plan was to keep Copper in our garage and ride him to deliver papers down Lakeview Drive and Golf Terrace. When school

us out. Edina seems poised to take its accessibility responsibilities seriously so that all people, including those with disabilities like asthma, can breathe freer. It feels good to live in a progressive community that cares about public health. Julie Mellum Edina

Parent Communication Network. Through these experiences, she has been a fundraiser for early education and a direct liaison between the schools and parents. She has gained knowledge and experience that would be invaluable on the school board. Sarah is a champion of the schools and will do whatever is necessary to ensure Edina continues to be a top-tier district. She is comfortable discussing issues with our elected officials and reaching out to community leaders to solve problems. She will ask all questions necessary to determine how best to implement the wishes of the Edina taxpayers. Sarah is fiscally responsible and will make sure no dime is wasted or misused. I admire Sarah’s leadership skills and her dedication to her children and the school system they attend. I feel there are few people who would take a job on the school board more seriously and do more to make our fabulous

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Support schools, support community To the editor: As a lifelong resident of Edina, I benefited from the great educational and athletic traditions of Edina schools. My wife and I raised our three sons in Edina and they too benefited from an Edina Public School education. As a realtor with more than 20 years of selling homes in Edina, I know from experience that quality schools support strong home values. Edina is an ideal community to purchase a home when you have school age children and has for generations attracted families to Edina. I believe the premium paid for Edina real estate in good markets and bad is directly attributable to the overall community of Edina and the quality public school we enjoy. Edina has always supported its schools and on Nov. 8, the citizens of Edina have another opportunity to support our schools by voting yes on both

referendums. Please join me in supporting our schools and community. Skip Thomas Edina

Fresher air in Edina To the editor: A hearty thanks to Katie Mintz and the Sun-Current for her excellent coverage of Edina’s proposal to convert the three Centennial Lakes Centrum wood burning fireplaces to gas (“Burning issue: City considers swapping wood burning fireplaces for gas,” Sept. 29). Edina has also launched a special health initiative with Richfield and Bloomington to create more bike paths and walking spaces to promote community health. In order for folks to venture outdoors more, however, cleaner air must be the carrot because it’s hard to navigate public spaces and our own neighborhoods when air pollution smokes

Supports Patzloff To the editor: I would like to encourage Edina residents to cast their vote for Sarah Patzloff for the Edina School Board. I am confident that she would be an incredible asset to the district. I have worked with Sarah on the boards of several different volunteer organizations within the Edina school system, and I have seen her dedication to our schools and the city of Edina as a whole. She is never afraid to accept a challenge and fill a leadership role. She has chaired committees on the Edina Family Center PTO and is the current president of the

History FROM PREVIOUS PAGE started, I would ride him to school and tie him to the bike rack. I am quite sure that dad must have noticed the minute he turned the car onto Brookview as he was coming home from work. He got out of the car and walked toward me asking mom what was going on. She told him. I was sure he would be proud of me because of his farm background. Instead, he said to me, “Get on that

horse this minute and take him back to Old Man McNellis. He is blind in one eye and older than the hills.” Tears started rolling down my cheeks, but I did what I was told. When I got back to the stable, Mr. McNellis was laughing. “I figured you’d be back,” he said as he reached into his pocket for my money. I never saw Copper again. ❏ What mechanism causes 70% of hypothyroidism in the U.S.… ❏ Why you are taking Thyroid Medications but still feel lousy ❏ The 6 different patterns of thyroid problems ❏ What lab tests are needed to identify your problem ❏ Natural solutions to improve your low thyroid problems Tuesday, October 11 7:00 pm Hampton Inn, 7740 Flying Cloud Drive, Eden Prairie Dr. Phil Gilman DC FMA FASBE Chiropractor Due to the high demand and sensitivity of this information, seating is limited Call Seminar registration at 651-681-8199. If line is busy, KEEP CALLING.

Women with Low Thyroid Many people live their lives suffering from low thyroid symptoms. This is especially true for females. Thyroid hormones control all your metabolism, and when thyroid hormones are low they cause all the cells in your body and mind to slow down. These symptoms include fatigue, weight gain, mood swings, sweet cravings, depression, sluggish thinking, thinning hair or hair loss, and cold hands and feet. For some people digestive problems like constipation and acid indigestion may signal low thyroid. Even when taking thyroid medication, many people continue to suffer from the symptoms of having low thyroid. Some people are even told their lab tests are normal but still continue to endure the symptoms of low thyroid. However, there can be a solution for symptoms from low thyroid! Dr. Phil Gilman DC FMA FASBE, a published thyroid researcher and chiropractor, is holding a seminar to discuss low thyroid symptoms. His research shows that while blood tests are valuable in evaluating thyroid dysfunction, often the basic tests are inadequate in finding the underlying causes of low thyroid. For example Dr. Gilman’s published research showed that liver func-

tion affects low thyroid. This research also showed that low thyroid persons have a observable posture and testable muscle weakness. There are six patterns of thyroid dysfunction and only one of them responds well to thyroid medication. That is why so many have been disappointed in their results. During the seminar Dr. Gilman will reveal the number one cause of low thyroid in the United States, why many women taking replacement hormones won’t get better, six patterns to thyroid problems, and why doctor’s don’t run complete thyroid tests. He will also discuss the one food that is often involved in low thyroid and how to test for it. In addition to exposing these truths about thyroid treatment, Dr. Gilman will also discuss natural solutions to help thyroid problems. Due to the high demand and sensitivity of this information, seating for Dr. Gilman’s private thyroid seminar is limited. It will be held on Tuesday, October 11th at 7:00 PM at the Hampton Inn, 7740 Flying Cloud Drive, Eden Prairie. Please call 651-681-8199 to reserve a seat today!

They choose to dispense with costly and unnecessary pomp associated with conventional funerals, and commit themselves and their families to this dignified disposition at the time of death.

Q. How does the Cremation Society of Minnesota Work? A. The Cremation Society is notified immediately at the time of death. Then the member’s body is transported to the Society’s crematory where it is held until proper medical authorization is secured. The cremation permit is then completed, and the body is cremated.

do.town FROM PAGE 1 disease in Minnesota. About two-thirds of adults in Minnesota – nearly 2 million people – are overweight or obese, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control. The cost of treating obesity and its related diseases, like Type 2 diabetes, could rise to $3.7 billion annually in Minnesota by 2020 if habits don’t change, Manley said. The do.town initiative builds off Blue Cross’ do. campaign, which encourages people to “groove your body every day” by moving more and eating better. In Bloomington, Edina and Richfield, do.town will begin with outreach in each community to understand current barriers. Gene Winstead, mayor of Bloomington, said those could include city policies. For instance, his city has adopted an alternative transportation plan with enhancements for walking, biking and other modes of transportation. “All of us need to think about the development decisions we make to make sure they are pedestrian and bike friendly,” he said. Jim Hovland, mayor of Edina, said his city could consider a new way to fund sidewalk construction during the 18-month period. Currently, residents are assessed for the cost of sidewalks in front of their homes, but there may be a way to spread expenses more widely to encourage more sidewalk construction, he said. “We want to help set the stage so that people can have the longest and best life they can,” Hovland said, noting that work done in the 18 months will be incremental. With the public-private collaboration, local leaders hope to engage schools, churches and workplaces. Blue Cross will provide its expertise to organizations looking to make changes, Manley said. “The success of this do.town will be determined by all the communities participating together,” said Richfield Mayor Debbie Goettel. “We’re going to need input and ideas from a variety of groups, from our schools, from our work places, neighborhoods, faith organizations, our civic groups and health provider.” For more information, visit dotown.org.

You don’t want to mess with this dog. Edina Police K-9 Diesel, along with handler Officer Mike Seeger, recently received national certification in criminal apprehension and other police dog skills. Diesel, a black German Shepherd Dog, scored roughly 617 points out of 700 to qualify at the United States Police Canine Association National Police Dog 1 Trials Sept. 18-23 in Detroit Lakes, Minn. Seeger said the Police Dog 1 competition includes six events: obedience, suspect search, article search, agility, criminal apprehension and criminal apprehension with gunfire. Police dogs must be recertified each year. Historically, Edina dogs have received Police Dog 1 certification at regional competitions, Seeger said. Some Edina dogs have certified nationally in narcotics, including Diesel last year. “Diesel is the first Edina dog to be certified nationally in both [Police Dog 1] and narcotics,” Seeger said. “I knew he’d pass. He’s a really good dog.” In additional to individual certification, Diesel and Seeger competed as part of a regional team that placed fourth overall among competitors from as far away as New York and California. The Region 12 team included officers and dogs from the Elk River and Lino Lakes police departments, the Sherburne County Sheriff ’s

At AirBroom Minnesota In Excelsior Can Help How does your chimney look? Are the bricks crumbling? Does it have White or Black exterior staining? Are you afraid to use your fireplace because you’re not sure how safe it is? When was the last time you used it? The professionals at AirBroom Minnesota Fireplace and Air Duct Cleaning in Excelsior can restore both your confidence and your chimney. Did you know that water causes more damage to masonry chimneys than fire? Your chimney, unlike other parts of your house, is constantly exposed to the elements. They are generally constructed of brick, mortar, tile, steel, and iron. All of these materials suffer deterioration as a result of prolonged contact with water. Freeze and thaw cycles so familiar here in the Twin Cities cause stress on the chimney. Water that has penetrated expands and contracts. Left unchecked it will cause interior and exterior damage to your home and masonry chimney. Some of the damage that can be caused includes: 1) spalled and broken exterior brickwork, 2) deteriorated masonry and metal firebox assemblies, 3) rusted dampers, 4) decayed mortar, cracked or missing flue liners, and in the worst case scenario damage to adjoining walls, ceilings, and woodwork. There are three main ways to prevent water damage. 1) Install a chimney cap. This is the most inexpensive measure to prevent water penetration to the flue and inside chimney elements. We sell and install locally manufactured caps for as little as $99. 2) Repair or replace a damaged chimney crown. The crown sits atop your chimney and covers and seals it from the flue liners to the chimney edge. Many chimneys are built with an inadequate crown constructed from common mortar mix. Mortar is not designed for and will not withstand years of prolonged moisture exposure without cracking and chipping which allows water to penetrate the chimney. A proper crown is constructed of a Portland

cement mixture and formed to provide an overhang drip edge. This assures the water will shed helping to prevent erosion in the mortar and brick of the chimneys surfaces. Keeping the crown “watertight” and shedding away from the sponge like masonry elements that the chimney is built of is the most important element to preventing deterioration. At AirBroom Minnesota we use the industry leading line of Saver products to build and repair chimneys. Use of these products allows us to pass on manufacturers material warranties of up to 15 years to our clients. 3) Waterproof your masonry chimney and crown. Most masonry is porous and will absorb large amounts of water. Brick acts like a sponge absorbing water and wicking it to the chimney interior. Products we use are specifically developed for use as waterproofing agents on masonry chimneys. These are vapor permeable – which means they allow the masonry to breath out but not in. This allows water that has penetrated the chimney to escape while preventing additional water from entering from the outside. Non vapor permeable sealers commonly available should never be used because they trap moisture inside actually accelerating deterioration. We use a special permeable sealer with a 10 year consumer warranty to protect your chimney. Doing this before deterioration occurs can save you hundreds or even thousands of dollars in future repairs. Water damage to chimneys is usually a slow subtle process. The problem is generally not obvious until it has become quite serious. Although these prevention measures may cost you a few dollars they can save you a lot more by preventing large future masonry repairs. The Hartmann’s at AirBroom Minnesota in Excelsior offer free no obligation repair estimates in the Western Metro area. Call John, Jim, or Lynda today to arrange a free no obligation estimate. Visit us at AirBroomMinnesota.com or call us at 952.545.2254. As a bonus, repair jobs over $750 scheduled with us prior to October 30th receive $100 off when you mention this article.

Other factors may also impact the final levy, which is based on property values, number of students enrolled in the district and total amount of state aid. According to the district, the final impact of recent legislation on state aid for Edina Public Schools in 2012 is still being reviewed. Final state calculations for levy and aid will help determine the final levy amount. The preliminary $33 million levy set by the board is the maximum allowed by the state. Staff recommended approval of the maximum amount and also directed administration to review all levies and look for possible reductions before December when the board will vote on final levy certification. “We want to continue to balance the needs of our students and also balance the needs of our taxpayers and be sensitive to both,” Nash said. The school board also unanimously approved a resolution to refinance school building bonds from 2004, which will result in $5.7 million in interest savings over the next five years. The $523,000 in annual district savings will begin with taxes payable in 2013 and result in a decrease of approximately $26 per year on a median-priced $400,000 Edina home. “The refund dollars go directly back to the taxpayers. There’s no impact on the actual school budget,” School Board Chair Randy Meyer said.

The preliminary determination to issue the air emission permit is tentative. There are four formal procedures for public participation in the MPCA’s consideration of the permit application. Interested persons may (1) submit written comments on the <draft><draft/proposed> permit; (2) request that the MPCA hold a public information meeting; (3) request the MPCA hold a contested case hearing; and/or (4) submit a petition to the Commissioner requesting that the MPCA Citizens’ Board (Board) consider the permit matter.

Duluth, Minnesota 55802-1863

The decision whether to issue the permit and, if so, under what terms, will be presented to the Board for decision if: (1) the Commissioner grants the petition requesting the matter be presented to the Board; (2) an Board member requests to hear the matter prior to the time the Commissioner makes a final decision on the permit; or (3) a request for a contested case hearing is pending. Otherwise, the Commissioner will make the decision. Persons who submit comments or petitions to the MPCA must state (1) their interest in the permit application or the draft permit; (2) the action they wish the MPCA to take, including specific references to the section of the draft permit they believe should be changed; and (3) the reasons supporting their position, stated with sufficient specificity as to allow the MPCA to investigate the merits of the position. As described in Minn. R. 7000.1800, persons who submit requests for a contested case hearing must also state the issues they propose to address in a contested case hearing, the specific relief requested or resolution of the matter, and the reasons (which may be in the form of proposed findings) supporting an MPCA decision to hold a contested case hearing. Failure to comply with these rules exactly may result in a denial of the request. The decision whether to hold a contested case hearing will be made under Minn. R. 7000.1900. Most public libraries throughout the state have copies of the current Minnesota Rules. They are also available on the Internet at www.revisor.leg.state.mn.us. The public comment period commences October 7, 2011, and terminates November 7, 2011. Comments must be received in writing at the MPCA by 4:30 p.m. on November 7, 2011. Evidence of timely receipt includes a date/time stamp imprinted on the first page of the written comments by the first floor information and reception area of the MPCA or by the Industrial Division support staff, or receipt by fax. Comments, requests and petitions should be mailed to: Marshall Cole, Air Quality Permits Section Minnesota Pollution Control Agency 18 Wood Lake Drive Southeast, Rochester, Minnesota 55904 507-206-2653 – Voice 507-280-5513 – Fax A copy of the draft permit will be mailed to any interested person upon the MPCA’s receipt of a written request. Thursday Night Lights With the Jewish holiday Yom Kippur this week, high school football shifts to Thursday night. Matchups for Thursday, Oct. 6, include St. Paul Academy at Blake, Minnetonka at Eden Prairie, Wayzata at Edina and Hopkins at St. Louis Park. All games start at 7 p.m. This year’s Blake-SPA game is the 100th of their series, and there will be a joint alumni reception at 6 p.m. Thursday on Blake’s Hopkins campus. Minnetonka and Eden Prairie, two of the title contenders in the Lake Conference, are also state Class 5A contenders. Two of the Lake’s best running backs, Rashad Cohen of Minnetonka and Andrew Larson of Eden Prairie, will match carries. Wayzata, 5-0 overall and also a state Class 5A contender, will try to avoid an upset at Edina’s Kuhlman Field. Running backs Erik Roti and Antonio Ford spearhead the Trojans’ offense along with quarterback Nick Martin and wide receivers Jeff Borchardt and Ethan Zeidler. Hopkins and its senior All-State receiver, Andre McDonald, will look to put on a big offensive show at Park. The Orioles will counter with their senior quarterback, Jacolbi CouringtonMeier.

LAKE TEAMS ARE 1-2 Eden Prairie and Wayzata go into this week’s high school football games as the No. 1 and 2 teams in the Associated Press state poll. Both teams are 50.

The former Edina High athlete caught a 2yard touchdown pass from Dan Dobson Oct. 1 to help the St. Olaf College football team rally past Bethel 30-28 in an MIAC game at Bethel. St. Olaf improved to 4-1 overall and 2-1 in the MIAC with Saturday’s victory.

Mark Handberg Edina High’s junior football quarterback scored on 1- and 2-yard runs Sept. 30 as the Hornets scored a 14-7 football homecoming win over the visiting Hopkins Royals.

Francisco Hardacker Edina High’s senior running back rushed for 142 yards Sept. 30 as the Hornets won their homecoming football game 14-7 over Hopkins.

Lake wars continue Edina plays Wayzata in football Thursday night BY JOHN SHERMAN • SUN NEWSPAPERS After winning a 14-7 thriller over Hopkins Sept. 30, the Edina High football team is at home this week for a game with undefeated Wayzata (5-0). The Trojans, ranked second in the Associated Press state poll, will be in town for a 7 p.m. kickoff Thursday, Oct. 6, at Kuhlman Field. “Against Wayzata, all we can do is go out and play,” said Edina head coach Reed Boltmann. “Wayzata is very talented, very deep and very wellcoached. They don’t have a weakness.” The Trojans haven’t had a close game yet, unless you consider a 44-21

victory over 4-1 Anoka a close game. But, at the same time, it’s possible Wayzata has yet to face a defense as good as Edina’s. Last week, the Hornets’ strategy for stopping Hopkins was ball control, and they did a masterful job of it. The win raised Edina’s record to 3-2 while Hopkins slipped to 2-3. “You can’t give Hopkins a lot of chances because Andre McDonald is so dangerous,” said Boltmann. McDonald scored Hopkins’ touchdown on a 76-yard pass from quarterback Andy Wicklund. The 6-foot-3, 205-pound senior had 146 receiving yards for Hopkins while Edina controlled the ground war. Co-captains Maggie Brink and Maggie Cochrane of the Edina High volleyball team sparked the Hornets to the championship at the Park of Cottage Grove Tournament Oct. 1. After beating Concordia Academy, Park, Bethany Academy and St. Paul Harding to win its pool, Edina defeated Harding, St. Paul Central and Concordia in bracket play. The score in the finals against Concordia was 2624, 25-14.

Elena Tsakakis The Edina High girls soccer defender did a solid job of controlling Eden Prairie’s attack during a 0-0 Lake Conference tie Oct. 1 at EP’s Aerie Stadium.

Jens Undlin Undlin’s goal was all of the offense the Edina High boys soccer team needed in a 1-0 victory over Eden Prairie Oct. 1 at Eden Prairie’s Aerie Stadium.

Edina High School Hall of Fame adds 8 Olympian, NFL Pro Bowl player head inductees list

sport athlete at Edina-East High, was nicknamed “Cub” because his older brother Paul was nicknamed “Bear.” The younger Olson brother was state discus champion in track and field in 1975. He also placed fourth in the shot put. He was a member of Edina’s state-champion track and field team in 1974 and an All-Lake Conference football player the same year. Olson went to an Ivy League school, Dartmouth University, where he earned 10 varsity letters. He played on an Ivy League-champion football team in 1978 and was given a tryout with the NFL’s Chicago Bears. “It is a great honor to be inducted tonight with so many great athletes,” said Olson. Today, Olson writes plays and musicals. A resident of Los Angeles, he has had 11 plays published. They have been performed in more than 150 cities across the country.

BY JOHN SHERMAN SUN NEWSPAPERS Seven former Edina athletes and a coach joined the Edina High Athletic Hall of Fame on Sept. 29 at Edina Country Club. The inductees included an Olympic gold medal winner, Jenny Potter, and an NFL Pro Bowl player, Karl Mecklenburg. Jim Crist, president of the Edina Athletic Boosters, welcomed the new members along with a crowd of close to 150. Inductions take place the Thursday of homecoming week every year. Each inductee recalled his or her glory days in the green and white, and each expressed gratitude to the community for all the advantages they had growing up. Following are some of the highlights of hall-of-fame night.

Leo Cabalka The late Leo Cabalka taught and coached in Edina for 27 years. Four of his children attended the banquet and his son Tom, also an Edina Hall of Fame member, spoke on Cabalka’s behalf. “My dad was an integral part of Edina’s basketball success,” Tom Cabalka said. “He was Duane Baglien’s freshman coach for many years. Leo was a very popular teacher – he could make you laugh and he could make you smile.” Former Edina High principal Rollie Ring also talked about Cabalka, a teacher he hired in the summer of 1956. “The kids loved Leo,” said Ring. “He was firm when he had to be, but he also had a great sense of humor. For many years, he was our lunchroom supervisor. That was a job most of the teachers wouldn’t touch, but Leo did a great job with it.” Cabalka was a two-sport athlete in basketball and baseball

New members of the Edina High Athletic Hall of Fame are, front row from left: Karl Mecklenburg (1978), Dan Plante (1990) and Mick Stenson (1966). In addition to teaching, he loved spending time with family, weekends at the cabin and canoeing in the Boundary Waters of northern Minnesota.

Mick Stenson (1966) Stenson was an All-State football lineman for the Edina Hornets in his senior season. He was a tackle on offense and an end on defense for a team that finished 8-0. Baseball and basketball were the other sports he played, and he was a member of the Hornets’ first state-championship basketball team in 1966. “That may have been the most exciting state basketball tournament in history,” Stenson told the banquet audience. “We beat Windom by a point in the first game, and then we beat Henning in three overtimes in the semifinals. In

the finals, we beat Duluth East in overtime.” Among Stenson’s basketball teammates were Edina Hall of Fame members Roger Schelper, Jeff Wright and Bob Zender. Stenson described the excitement of Lake Conference football in the mid-’60s. “I remember a game we played at Robbinsdale in front of 17,000 fans,” he said. “Traffic was so congested around the stadium that we had to get off the bus and walk three blocks to the gate. We won that game 20-13. “There were no state playoffs then, but we were named mythical state champions. Trust me, we were the champs.” Stenson is co-founder and owner of Davanni’s restaurants.

Doug Hastings (1969) Hastings had the greatest

year ever for an Edina High boys hockey goalie. In his senior season, he played in 16 Lake Conference games and had 12 shutouts. He led Edina to its first state boys hockey title in 1969. Ray Book, a friend of Hastings, said Hastings was humbled to be included in the Edina Hall of Fame. The goalie, also a star defensive back in football, credited his coaches and teammates for his success with the Hornets. Hastings’ motto as an athlete was: “Give it your best, leave it all on the field.” He went on to play goalie at Michigan and Minnesota during his collegiate years, graduating from Minnesota in 1974 with a BA in speech communications. For the past 23 years, Hastings has worked as a certified home inspector.

Phil Olson (1975) Olson, an outstanding three-

Karl Mecklenburg (1978) In his senior season at Edina-West High, Mecklenburg was named All-State as a tight end and defensive end. He earned a scholarship to play football at Augustana College in Sioux Falls, S.D., and later transferred to the University of Minnesota, where he finished his college career as an All-Big Ten player. Mecklenburg went on to play 12 seasons with the NFL’s Denver Broncos. He made three trips to the Super Bowl and was named to the Pro Bowl six times. Mecklenburg marveled at the passion of the Denver fans. “On Super Bowl week, you’d have a lot of people painting their houses orange,” he said. “I was kind of small in high school,” said Mecklenburg. “[Coach] Stav Canakes pushed me and trusted me more and more as time went on. As a senior, I was the only player to go both ways.” Today, Mecklenburg is a HALL: TO NEXT PAGE

Dan Plante (1990)

An All-State and All-Metro player in soccer and basketball, VanderTop was one of Edina High’s best female athletes of the 1990s. One of her most vivid high school memories was playing in the state soccer tournament at the Metrodome. She went on to play basketball at the University of Illinois, where she was an Academic All-Big Ten selection. Later, she earned a doctorate in physical therapy at the University of Minnesota. She married former University of Wisconsin basketball star Jon Bryant, and the couple now lives in St. Louis Park. “I feel fortunate to be included in the Edina Athletic Hall of Fame,” she said. “I had wonderful coaches, who I would like to thank for their patience and knowledge. “You won’t always be a superstar in everything you do,” she said. “But with a team, everyone’s contribution is important. I equally respect the starters,

Plante moved from Hayward, Wis., to Edina when his parents relocated to Minnesota in the fall of 1988. “Coach Willard Ikola is the reason I’m standing here tonight,” he said, referring to Edina’s legendary hockey coach. “I was blessed with great coaches and teammates when I played at Edina High. Bart Larson, Ike’s assistant, played a big part in my development. The guys I played with in Edina are good friends to this day.” When he first arrived in Edina, Plante was given a T-shirt. It said on the back, “Together Everyone Achieves More.” That stuck with him and he has applied it throughout his life. In addition to starring on the hockey rink, Plante was an all-conference football player.

Jenny Schmidgall (1997) One of the most famous graduates of Edina High, Jenny (Schmidgall) Potter has an Olympic hockey gold medal on her resume. She first made the Olympic team in 1998 as an 18-year-old. During a brilliant college career at the University of Minnesota-Duluth, she was a four-time All-American and two-time WCHA Player of the Year. The Edina grad was named USA Women’s Hockey Player of the Year for 2010. Potter is a rare national player, a four-time Olympic team member. “Most people’s first impression of me is, I thought you’d be bigger,” Potter told the banquet audience. “I learned to play hockey on the outdoor rinks of Edina, mainly against boys.” Potter played on the junior varsity boys hockey team at Edina High before going on to star as a women’s college player. Today, Potter operates her own hockey camps, known as Potter’s Pure Hockey. She and her husband Rob have two children, Madison and Cullen.

Quarterback Mark Handberg scored Edina’s touchdowns on 1and 2-yard runs. “Mark managed the game well and kept our offense going,” said Boltmann. “And our offensive line had a good game. Kevin Carroll played his best game so far.” Defensively, linebacker Tory Dalbec made the biggest play of the night. He stripped a ball out of McDonald’s hands just before the big receiver broke into daylight. “If he hadn’t made that play, who knows?” said Boltmann. “McDonald might have scored another touchdown.” Other defensive standouts for the Hornets included Preston Blanek, Christian Dietzler, Coleman Foley, Billy Nash and Peter Wikman. Four Hornet starters – Marley Allison, Deon Dorvil, C.J. Johnson and Nick Rallis – missed the game with injuries. Dorvil and Johnson are out for the season with torn knee ligaments.

Tanisha has been the glue that holds our tennis team together this season. She plays #1 singles more than any other player, and if she is not in that position then she would for sure play #1 doubles. She is the Senior co-captain of girls’ tennis team and won the #1 Doubles (with Valya Johnson) at the Mound Doubles Tournament In addition she is a fabulous student with many AP/honors classes to her credit. She is also in leadership postions in NHS and the Ignite Mentor program and participates on the Girls Basketball team.

STOP SURFING AND START LEARNING. EXPLORE THE NEW MINNLOCAL.COM NOW FEATURING STREAMING VIDEO NEWS FROM YOUR COMMUNITIES EVERY SINGLE WEEKDAY

By: Ali Holman, co-owner of www.coreconditioningtraining.com I think we can all agree that eating is fun. Not only is it a way for us to socialize, reward ourselves and comfort ourselves, it also is the one area of fitness where people have the most trouble. Wouldn’t it be great to know that the choices you make are actually helping your fitness program? More importantly, wouldn’t it be even better to banish the word “diet” from your vocabulary? Chances are, if you are embarking on a “diet”, it will have a beginning and an end. The end is usually followed by slowly going back to old habits and ends you right back where you started. With our clients, we really encourage them to focus on a Lifestyle Change with room for “cheat meals” and realistic goals; which inevitably lead to lifelong results and without the emotional roller coaster of a diet.

Core/Conditioning Training’s List of “Fat Burning Foods”

eggs

low-fat dairy

Eggs are high in protein and low in calories. You may have heard all the warnings about eggs and your health: opt for eggwhites for the low-cholesterol, fatburning effect. Eggs also contain the vitamin B-12, a great supplement for breaking down fat cells.

Studies show that women who eat low-fat dairy products (such as non-fat yogurt and low-fat milk) three to four times a day lost 70 percent more fat than low-dairy dieters.

beans

oatmeal

Beans are one of the best sources of protein, fiber and iron. Some of the best beans to ear are: • Navy Beans • White Beans • Kidney Beans • Lima Beans

Oatmeal is loaded with soluble fiber, which helps reduce blood cholesterol by flushing those bad digestive acids out of your system. Skip the flavored oatmeals - you lose out on all the health benefits. If you must sweeten your oatmeal, do so by adding fruit.

olive oil

lean meats

Certain fats are good for you, and your body needs them. Olive oil is one of those “good fats.” It helps you burn fat and keeps your cholesterol down. One ounce of extra virgin olive oil contains about 85% of the daily value for monosaturated fat.

Search for lean meats - chicken (baked, broiled, grilled), fish and turkey - which are all high in protein. It is a good rule of thumb to consume at least one half-gram protein per pound of body weight each day. A chicken breast gets you well on your way, with about 22 grams of protein.

whole grains

interval training

Our body needs carbohydrates, despite what the fad diets tell you. Avoid processed carbohydrates such as white breads, bagles, pastas and white rice and look for whole grains that have not been processed and contain the fiber and minerals your body needs.

Interval training is defined as short, repeated bouts of intense exercise with minimal rest. You can burn major calories and get an all-over workout in less than 30 minutes. When you see people who are “cut,” chances ar they are partaking in interval training.
