BY KATIE MINTZ – SUN NEWSPAPERS Like their customers, a group of Twin Cities business owners have taken to running in a pack. Pet Professionals and Companies, or PetPAC, brings together pet industry leaders and non-profit groups to network and share resources. Sonja Tengdin, owner of Edina-based Scoopy Poo Doggy Doo Pick Up and a co-founder of PetPAC, said as the market continues to expand – Americans spend an estimated $50 billion a year on products and services for their pets – there are plenty of reasons to play nice. “When I first started in the business 10 years ago, none of the other dog businesses in town were very eager to share their experiences, techniques or anything,” Tengdin said. “But you grow so much more from the experience of others.” PetPAC has more than 50 members ranging from veterinarians and pet supply stores to dog walkers, photographers PETPAC: TO PAGE 25

Edina schools scale back enrollment projections

Student numbers in Edina aren’t growing as fast as the district previously projected. The Edina School Board received the official enrollment numbers for the current school year and a five-year enrollment projection Monday night, Oct. 24. “When we look at the next five years we’re projecting the growth to continue to be resident growth, and its going to be a much more slow growth and steady growth than we had thought last year at this time,” Director of Business Services Margo Nash said. Over the next five years, K-12 enrollment is projected to increase by 215 students or 2.6 percent – less than 1 percent each year. The growth will be seen at

Edina School District proposes calendar changes Shorter winter break, earlier end to school year discussed BY KATIE MINTZ – SUN NEWSPAPERS Next year Edina students could see a shorter winter break and earlier end to the school year. The Edina School Board discussed

proposed changes to the 2012-2013 academic calendar at its meeting Monday, Oct. 24. Edina previously adopted a 20122013 calendar in December 2010. Human Resources Director Gwen Jackson said the state Legislature enacted several changes last session that affect district planning. Beginning July 2012, school district calendars must reflect hours of instruction rather than days. “With that we took a look at the cal-

endar and made some modifications,” Jackson said. The new calendar is slated to return to the school board for action Monday, Nov. 7. One of the most significant changes is a shortened winter break. Students will begin vacation following school Friday, Dec. 21, and return to school Wednesday, Jan. 2, rather than Monday, Jan. 7, as previously planned. That reduces break by three days. School Boardmember Regina

Neville said it would allow for more instruction days prior to Advanced Placement testing. Spring break will be extended by one day, beginning Thursday, March 28, rather than Friday. The school year will also end one day earlier than planned Thursday, June 6. The commencement ceremony has tentatively been set Sunday, June 9. Jackson said the calendar also proCALENDAR: TO NEXT PAGE

Calendar FROM PREVIOUS PAGE vides additional time for staff training and adds consistency across grade levels. In the past students in grades 1-12 began school Tuesday after Labor Day, and kindergartners began Thursday. Kindergartners will now begin Wednesday. All students in K-12 and Early Childhood Special Education will end the school year the same day, rather than elementary, middle and the high school each ending on different days. In addition, professional development days were spread throughout the calendar rather than front-loading them in August, and the number of half-days were reduced. “By this structure they’ll be able to do the training without interrupting the school day,” said School Boardmember Peyton Robb. Jackson said the district is also looking to eliminate some high school late start days. In addition to changes to the calendar, the school board discussed start and end times for 2012-2013. For the second consecutive year, the district is proposing keeping the same start and

end times for all schools as the current year. In the past, Edina rotated elementary school schedules every year. Action on the item is expected Monday, Nov. 7. If approved, the four Edina elementary schools that begin 9:20 a.m. and the two that begin 8:35 a.m. will continue to do so next year. Supt. Ric Dressen said the district would look at the possibility for making changes in future years as it revises its strategic plan. Finally, Dressen also addressed another calendar issue. At the Sept. 26 meeting, School Boardmember Idith Almog expressed her disappointment that the Edina High School homecoming coronation was scheduled Thursday, Sept. 29, which also marked the beginning of the Jewish New Year, Rosh Hashana. “At the last meeting we did have discussion about making sure that as we did our calendar planning for the 20122013 year that we’d set up a procedure and a protocol to make sure we wouldn’t run into situations where we were in conflict with faith-based holidays and other legal holidays,” Dressen said. He apologized and said an administrator is now accountable for tracking and addressing potential calendar conflicts.

Edina could take step to improve water quality City considering ban of coal tar sealant used on driveways BY SUSAN SHERIDAN TUCKER GUEST COLUMNIST For many Edina residents sealing their asphalt driveway is a regular maintenance chore. For years, pavement contractors and homeowners have relied on driveway sealers that contain coal tar. Coal tar is a byproduct of coal processing that contains high levels of toxic chemicals called polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, or PAHs, a known human carcinogen if exposed at

high levels. Recent studies by the Environmental Protection Agency, recommendations from the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency and the 2009 Minnesota House Bill 1231 are calling for the ban of coal tar sealants because of the now identified high levels of PAHs found in local storm water ponds. The PAHs have accumulated over many years as coal tar particles leave parking lots and driveways via rainstorms, tire treads, foot traffic, wind and volatilization. The levels are quite high in some Minnesota storm water ponds and safely removing the sediment from the ponds will be an expensive undertaking. Since July 1, 2010, all munici-

palities permitted by the Municipal Separate Storm Sewer Systems have been prohibited from using coal tar products. This includes the city of Edina. As of today, 10 municipalities have taken the additional step to ban the use of coal tar products for residential and commercial purposes, and now qualify for Minnesota Pollution Control Agency grants to help remove the sediment from polluted ponds. Under the Edina Energy and Environment Commission’s Sept. 8 recommendation, the Edina City Council will also consider such a ban at an upcoming meeting. If the ordinance passes, the use of coal tar sealants will be banned from use in Edina. What does that mean for the

homeowner? Most national home improvement stores no longer carry coal tar sealants due to the national movement to ban these products. However, if you shop at smaller hardware stores or rely on a commercial pavement contractor to seal your driveway, it means you will need to use an asphalt-based sealant, a product that’s functionally comparable to the coal tar product and readily available. If enough Minnesota municipalities begin to adopt this ban, all contractors will have to convert to the less toxic and less noxious product. How can you tell whether a contractor is using a coal tar product – the foul smell, and please don’t linger around the product, you’ll be inhaling some of those PAHs.

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Vote yes on referendums To the editor: As lifelong residents of Edina, we benefited from the great educational and athletic traditions of Edina Schools. We both graduated from Edina High School in 1959. In our era, technology was not a big part of our education. Our world has now changed and new technology is an important part of education and life. To continue the great education traditions of Edina, our schools must be equipped with up-to-date technology adequately funded. We believe that Edina is the No. 1 community in the state and what makes Edina great are its schools, athletics, arts, leisure activities, municipal services and community life. We support the strong traditions of quality schools in Edina. Please join us in voting yes and yes on Nov. 8. Fred and Nancy Richards Edina

Technology essential tool for education To the editor: The Edina Public Schools are the backbone of our community. We need these schools to produce graduates that are prepared to win in a hyper-competitive global economy. A 21st Century education now requires the latest in technology. Passage of the Nov. 8 school referendums will allow our schools to update computers and equipment, implement wireless coverage in all school buildings and provide families a single point-of-entry website that is easy to use. These are no longer extras; they are essential tools for our kids, families and teachers. Please vote yes on Nov. 8. Geoff and Annie Michel Edina Sen. Geoff Michel represents district 41 in the Minnesota state

Supports Patzloff To the editor: I had the pleasure of serving with Sarah Patzloff on the Edina Family Center Advisory Council for three years. With careful examination and a willingness to ask tough questions about our financial reports, she became a true “watchdog” for our group. She made certain the Edina Family Center was spending our funds judiciously and she always looked for creative ways to get the biggest bang for our buck. As a parent of two young Edina students, I worry about future classroom cuts and I know Sarah will bring a thoughtful and pragmatic approach to district finances. And that’s why I’m supporting Sarah for school board and encourage my fellow Edina friends, neighbors and residents who care about the future

Supports Patzloff To the editor: I met Sarah Patzloff when we worked together on the Edina Unplugged committee. I saw her jump in and take on responsibilities with an upbeat attitude. And after getting to know her personally, I can say Sarah offers the practical and pragmatic leadership skills we need on the Edina School Board. Like many of my neighbors, I’m concerned about the challenges our schools face. I know Sarah will ask tough questions and demand honest answers. It’s why you’ll find my name on her website as a supporter and why I’ll vote for her Nov. 8. Sarah Miller Edina LETTERS: TO NEXT PAGE

Fortunate for three remaining candidates To the editor: I would like to encourage Edinans to get out and vote for all three remaining school board candidates, Cathy Cella, Sarah Patzloff and Leny Wallen-Friedman. Although only three remain actively seeking the three seats and they represent different personal political views, when it comes to school issues they share in common the dedication and the years of school related experience needed to keep Edina Schools on track as the best in the country. It is unfortunate that Jason Berger had to drop out. I, and others, felt Edina voters needed to know about Mr. Berger’s previously anonymous controversial Internet writings on subjects that are very relevant to the choice of someone placed in charge of our children’s education. That story and his Internet quotations were then picked up in stories by Katie Mintz in the Edina SunCurrent, Ryan Gauthier in Edina Patch, and Jon Tevlin in the Star Tribune. There is a reason those writings appeared in the news. Copies in full of all those writings in

context, are available for you to read for yourself at EdinaModerates.com. Had Mr. Berger simply admitted his views when questioned elsewhere by the public, no exposé would have occurred. I wish Mr. Berger well, admire his personal family situation and hope he does continue participation in our diverse political process, but in a forthright way. In the end, we are fortunate that there are three remaining high-quality candidates. Please vote for all three. Dick Novack Edina

To the editor: As longtime residents of Edina of more than 70 years, we have been very proud of our public school system. My children and now my grandchildren have reaped the rewards of this school system. EdinaW robotics company leader in growing field e e k l y S u p e r S a v i n g s ! ReconRobotics to host first regional Robotics Alley event Nov. 17 BY KATIE MINTZ – SUN NEWSPAPERS A cutting-edge Edina company is hoping to lead the Upper Midwest in a robot revolution. ReconRobotics Inc., in partnership with the Minnesota High Tech Association, will host the first Robotics Alley event Thursday, Nov. 17, on the

University of Minnesota campus in Minneapolis. Approximately 250 business and government leaders are expected to discuss growth in the robotics industry. “Our state and region is uniquely positioned to attract the investment, government research funds, revenues and jobs that the robotics ‘revolution’ is generating,” Alan Bignall, president and CEO of ReconRobotics, said. “If we don’t step forward and lead, some other region undoubtedly will.” Andrew Borene, executive director of Robotics Alley, said the hope is to estab-

Is Water Ruining Your Chimney? The Professionals At AirBroom Minnesota In Excelsior Can Help How does your chimney look? Are the bricks crumbling? Does it have White or Black exterior staining? Are you afraid to use your fireplace because you’re not sure how safe it is? When was the last time you used it? The professionals at AirBroom Minnesota Fireplace and Air Duct Cleaning in Excelsior can restore both your confidence and your chimney. Did you know that water causes more damage to masonry chimneys than fire? Your chimney, unlike other parts of your house, is constantly exposed to the elements. They are generally constructed of brick, mortar, tile, steel, and iron. All of these materials suffer deterioration as a result of prolonged contact with water. Freeze and thaw cycles so familiar here in the Twin Cities cause stress on the chimney. Water that has penetrated expands and contracts. Left unchecked it will cause interior and exterior damage to your home and masonry chimney. Some of the damage that can be caused includes: 1) spalled and broken exterior brickwork, 2) deteriorated masonry and metal firebox assemblies, 3) rusted dampers, 4) decayed mortar, cracked or missing flue liners, and in the worst case scenario damage to adjoining walls, ceilings, and woodwork. There are three main ways to prevent water damage. 1) Install a chimney cap. This is the most inexpensive measure to prevent water penetration to the flue and inside chimney elements. We sell and install locally manufactured caps for as little as $99. 2) Repair or replace a damaged chimney crown. The crown sits atop your chimney and covers and seals it from the flue liners to the chimney edge. Many chimneys are built with an inadequate crown constructed from common mortar mix. Mortar is not designed for and will not withstand years of prolonged moisture exposure without cracking and chipping which allows water to penetrate the chimney. A proper crown is constructed of a Portland

cement mixture and formed to provide an overhang drip edge. This assures the water will shed helping to prevent erosion in the mortar and brick of the chimneys surfaces. Keeping the crown “watertight” and shedding away from the sponge like masonry elements that the chimney is built of is the most important element to preventing deterioration. At AirBroom Minnesota we use the industry leading line of Saver products to build and repair chimneys. Use of these products allows us to pass on manufacturers material warranties of up to 15 years to our clients. 3) Waterproof your masonry chimney and crown. Most masonry is porous and will absorb large amounts of water. Brick acts like a sponge absorbing water and wicking it to the chimney interior. Products we use are specifically developed for use as waterproofing agents on masonry chimneys. These are vapor permeable – which means they allow the masonry to breath out but not in. This allows water that has penetrated the chimney to escape while preventing additional water from entering from the outside. Non vapor permeable sealers commonly available should never be used because they trap moisture inside actually accelerating deterioration. We use a special permeable sealer with a 10 year consumer warranty to protect your chimney. Doing this before deterioration occurs can save you hundreds or even thousands of dollars in future repairs. Water damage to chimneys is usually a slow subtle process. The problem is generally not obvious until it has become quite serious. Although these prevention measures may cost you a few dollars they can save you a lot more by preventing large future masonry repairs. The Hartmann’s at AirBroom Minnesota in Excelsior offer free no obligation repair estimates in the Western Metro area. Call John, Jim, or Lynda today to arrange a free no obligation estimate. Visit us at AirBroomMinnesota.com or call us at 952.545.2254. As a bonus, repair jobs over $750 scheduled with us prior to November 30 receive $100 off when you mention this article.

CITY NOTES City’s top credit ratings taxpayer. reaffirmed by agencies ‘Sunniva’ sculpture is Independent bond-rating agencies People’s Choice winner Standard & Poor’s and Moody’s Investors Service recently affirmed high bond ratings for the city of Edina. Edina is one of just a few communities in the state with both “AAA” and “Aaa” ratings. Moody’s Investors Service in 2000 gave the Edina its highest rating, Aaa. In 2002, Standard & Poor’s upgraded Edina’s general obligation bond rating to AAA, the company’s highest rating. The agencies reaffirmed their ratings in October. According to its summary Standard & Poor’s rating reflects their view of the city’s participation in the MinneapolisSt. Paul metropolitan area economy and role as a first-ring suburb in the prosperous Twin Cities western suburbs; continued strong financial performance with very strong fund balance levels on a dollar and percent of expenditure basis; evidence of continued strong management practices; and manageable debt burden with a rapid amortization schedule. The high bond ratings help ensure that Edina debt is issued with the lowest possible interest expense and cost to the

Edina artist James Gabbert won the Edina Public Art Committee’s People’s Choice award for his sculpture “Sunniva – A Gift of the Sun” located at Grandview Square Park. The committee recently announced the selection of the People’s Choice winners for the sculpture exhibitions on the Edina Promenade and Grandview Square. The rotating exhibitions are on view for one year and change each spring. Ballot cards were available in the parks and over the course of the summer, hundreds of votes were cast for favorite sculptures. As first place winner, Gabbert will receive an award of $1,000. The secondplace winner of $750 was Steve Elliott of Wayne, Neb., for “Transponder – An Abstraction of Nature.” Judd Nelson of Wayzata received the third-place award of $500 for “Blue Heron with Pumpkinseed – Realism and Nature.” A new call for artists for 2012 is expected at the end of the year. Enrollment FROM PAGE 1 the secondary level. Elementary enrollment is expected to slightly decrease over the next five years. “Last year at this time we were potentially facing double digit increases in the secondary enrollment, so this seems to be a little bit more manageable,” Nash said. Based on the projections, current facilities will accommodate all students using a maximum capacity scenario at secondary schools, according to the district. The functional capacity measure will be exceeded at Edina High School beginning in 2012-2013, and at Valley View Middle School in 2014-2015, according to the projections. South View Middle School, which was slated to hit functional capacity next year, should stay under the limit with the 5,600square-foot addition to accommodate up to five classrooms and expand the cafeteria. The school board also unanimously awarded the $1.7 million construction contract for the expansion to Ebert Construction Monday night. Nash said slow and steady growth is a good position for Edina to be in, as “the majority of districts in the state are declining in enrollment.” The official enrollment count for 2011-

2012 taken Monday, Oct. 3, showed a 0.7 percent increase in K-12 students from last school year. Edina Public Schools currently has 8,249 students compared to 8,188 in the official count last year. The increase of 61 students was lower than the projected increase of 108 students. Last year, the district had 74 more students than projected for total growth of 2.5 percent. This year, at the elementary level there are 20 less students. In middle school, there are 45 more. Edina High School is up 36 students. Growth in middle school comes from Valley View Middle School. South View is down nine from last year. “There was a concern about the facility and space at South View Middle School. South View was closed to open enrollment so they were within nine students of where they were the previous year,” Mary Manderfeld, director of enrollment and school improvement, said. Resident enrollment this year is 7,062, a decrease of 133 students from last year. Open enrollment is up by 21 students. There are 1,187 non-resident students totaling 14.4 percent of the district’s overall enrollment. Manderfeld said of the 390 that applied, there were still 92 hoping to enter grades 2, 4, 6 and 9 on a waiting list. For the first time in several years, the district was able to admit all open enrollment applicants for kindergarten. Nash said based on the Oct. 3 count, the district will need to adjust its budget by about $450,000 to account for the smaller than expected enrollment. She said the district would continue to monitor enrollment leading to mid-year budget adjustments in December. “It isn’t an absolute science. We try to get as close as we can,” she said. Going forward, Nash said the district should have multiple ways of projecting and analyzing data to better predict enrollment. This year, 17 different models were used to reach the newest five-year projection.

..... before YOU sell !

1. All dealers do not pay the same price. Whether you are selling the Family Treasures or just some old, broken jewelry, it pays to CHECK and COMPARE. Just call and ask for our gram, pennyweight or ounce prices. 2. Grove Coin is rated the Twin Cities Top Coin & Gold Buyer by the Minneapolis Tribune’s independent survey ..... (Grove Coin payed 8% more than Wixon’s and 32% more than the Gold Guys at the Mall of America). 3. It is RISKY to sell in a Motel ... to someone who will not be here next week ! More often than not, “motel buyers” pay very low prices for gold & silver. 4. Knowledge is the key to accurate, competitive pricing. Grove Coin is a “Full-Service” dealer, well versed in all facets of precious metals, numismatic coins and paper money. 5. We guarantee your visit to Grove Coin will be a pleasant one. In about 1074 A.D., eight years after defeating Harold II at the Battle of Hastings, King William I of England (William the Conqueror) issued a silver penny, about the size of a dime, bearing his portrait with a star on either side. In due time, English pennies became known as “stoerlings” from which the modern English currency of Sterling and the tem for fine silver is derived. Some have suggested that the use of stars on the coinage of this period might have represented celestial activity such as the appearance of Haley’s Comet in March of 1066 A.D., the year of the Conquest.

8. At least one very “high-profile” local gold buyer has been know to play games with weights. A high quote means nothing if you don’t get full credit for EVERY gram or pennyweight of gold or silver.

DUCATIONAL XCELLENCE

How to switch majors successfully

Choosing a major is often met with trepidation. College students may feel pressured to choose a major when they are less than certain about what they want to study. Majors aren’t set in stone and students have the opportunity to switch concentrations if their original choice isn’t the right fit. Perhaps now more than ever, there is pressure on students to pick the right college major. In this weak economy, experts are touting advice

on choosing a major that gives students the best chance of finding a job after graduation. The National Center for Education Statistics says that in 2007-2008, the most popular majors were business, social sciences, history, and education. According to Capital University, students usually have so many interests that they have difficulty narrowing their choices. Their first inclination is not to declare a major and wait to see if they find their niche. In general, two out of every three university students change majors at least once. This should give hope to students who feel they need a chance. Here are some tips that should help with the process. * Wait to declare. Many educators advise waiting a semester or two before declaring a major. Take a variety of elective courses and general

www.minnlocal.com – Thursday, Nov. 3, 2011 – Edina Sun-Current

Spotlight on Education “Imagine Your Future” education classes that will fit degree requirements regardless of major. * Take an assessment test. The career or guidance office may offer some of the standardized tools to help students find an area of concentration. * Do your research. If you’re considering a new major, talk to your advisor about what will be required of that new major, including classes and other coursework. You can also talk to students currently studying under that major. Knowing what to expect beforehand can make the decision-making process a little easier. * Talk to the dean. Many colleges and universities have deans or advisors in charge of students in certain majors. They will know the courses required for a degree. Switching majors may involve taking or re-tak-

ing some courses that will fit with the new major. It may also mean that some courses that were taken cannot be applied to the new major. This can result in having to take more classes one semester or taking an extra semester to graduate. * Consider finances. Taking different classes or stretching out your college career an additional semester might cost more money. Be sure that the finances are there, whether personally provided or funded through financial aid. * Assess whether your major truly matters. Many liberal arts or general studies majors are applicable in many fields. Therefore, switching majors may not even be necessary. Think about continuing with a current major and then concentrate or minor in something more specific.

Elections FROM PAGE 1 Berger and Ben Rider did not meet the deadline but have since notified Edina Public Schools they are no longer actively seeking election. According to the Minnesota School Boards Association, if either is among the top three vote-getters, they can still accept the position. If they decline, the school board must then appoint a person to fill the first two years of the term until the next election cycle in 2013. School board members Bert Ledder and Peyton Robb are not running for re-

COLONIAL

election. Also on the ballot are two Edina Public Schools levy referendums. Voters will be asked to renew the current operating levy, which provides approximately $3 million or $400 per pupil annually. They will also be asked to renew and increase the capital levy from $1 million to $4.5 million annually. This funding would expand and integrate technology infrastructure, hardware, software, support and training. Existing levies expire in 2012. There are six school districts within Edina’s boundaries. In addition to Edina Public Schools, the Hopkins and Richfield school districts will have elections on Tuesday, Nov. 8.

Make it 15 in a row for Edina girls Tennis title completes perfect Hornet season BY JOHN SHERMAN – SUN NEWSPAPERS Edina High’s girls tennis team completed a perfect season with its 15th consecutive state team title last week at the University of Minnesota’s Baseline Tennis Center. It was business as usual for the deep and talented Hornets, who defeated Mounds View 7-0 in the first round, Elk River 7-0 in the semifinals and Rochester Mayo 5-2 in the finals. The highlight of the first-round match with Mounds View was a pair of 6-0, 6-0 wins by No. 2 singles player Meghana Vasireddy and No. 3 singles player Maddie Boyer. Caroline Ward won at No. 1 singles and Kelly Reger added a victory at No. 4. Edina swept doubles with sisters Morgan and Mackenzie Marinovich winning at No. 1, Meghan Herring and Julia

Povilaitis winning at No. 2 and eighthgraders Hannah Hankinson and Katie Engelking winning at No. 4. Edina generated the same intensity in the semifinals, and Boyer again posted a 60, 6-0 win at No. 3 singles. Other singles winners for the Hornets were Ward, Vasireddy and Bridget Kluesner. The Marinovich sisters won at first doubles. Herring and Reger won at No. 2 and Caroline Ruwe and Gretta Hellmuth won at No. 3. That set the stage for the championship match against Rochester Mayo, which was ranked second behind Edina in the state poll for most of the season. The Spartans tried to attack Edina in doubles, and the strategy was partially successful, producing two wins. Edina prevailed on the strength of its singles as Ward, Vasireddy, Boyer and Reger all won in straight sets. The Marinovich sisters added the other point for the Hornets with a 6-4, 6-3 win at No. 1 doubles. Edina finished the season 22-0 overall.

Nikki Larson Edina High’s swimming standout has the fastest honor roll times in four events at the end of the regular season. She will lead the Hornets into the Section 6AA meet Nov. 10-12.

Patrick LeCorre The first field-goal try of LeCorre’s Edina High varsity football career turned out to be a good one. His 37yard field goal on the final play of the game beat Hopkins 38-35 Oct. 25.

Nolan LeVoir LeVoir scored four touchdowns Oct. 28 as the Edina Red eighth-grade football team beat Edina Green 40-34 for the city championship. Edina Red finished the season 9-1 overall with LeVoir scoring a total of 34 touchdowns.

Tate Sweeney The Edina seventh-grader is an individual qualifier for the state girls cross country meet. She finished 10th in the Section 6AA meet with a 4K time of 15:05.

Edina boys cross country team vies for state championship BY JOHN SHERMAN SUN NEWSPAPERS At the end of the 2010 boys cross country season at Edina High, junior Jake Campbell was “barely on the radar,” according to Hornet head coach Jamie Kirkpatrick. But by working hard over the off-season and also in season, Kirkpatrick has zoomed to the front of the pack. He finished seventh in the Section 6AA meet Oct. 26 at Gale Woods Farm, and now he’s on the way to state. Edina won the section team title and is considered a contender for the state title. The state Class AA race is set for 11 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 5, at St. Olaf College in Northfield. While Campbell’s rise played an important role in Edina’s rise this season, it is far from the whole story. “All of the groups we’ve had over the last five years have

worked hard,” said Kirkpatrick. “And this team certainly fits into that culture.” Edina is primarily a new team this year since seven of last year’s top eight graduated in 2011. “It has been an exciting season, and we’re coming together at the right time,” Kirkpatrick noted. “We had some big gaps to fill coming into the season, and we filled them.” At the top of Edina’s lineup is junior Tom Burke, who finished fourth in Section 6AA with a 5K time of 15 minutes, 55 seconds. Campbell was second for the Hornets in 16:11. Sophomore twins Matt and Luke Lumbar were next. Matt ran 16:13 for ninth place and Luke ran 16:21 for 12th place. Senior Matt Berntson finished 21st in 16:47. Rounding out Edina’s section lineup were junior Peter Knoll (30th) and senior Paul Nordquist (35th).

Edina won a tight three-way battle with Lake Conference rivals Eden Prairie and Wayzata. The Hornets scored 53 points to 56 for Eden Prairie and 60 for Wayzata. Because only two teams from each section are eligible to advance, Wayzata won’t be able to defending the state Class AA title it won last fall. Going into the state meet, Stillwater is ranked No. 1 and favored to win the Class AA title. However, Kirkpatrick and the Hornets are not giving up hope. “Stillwater is in control of its own destiny,” the Hornet coach explained. “Another team would have to have an exceptionally good day to beat them.” Individually, Kirkpatrick said Burke has a shot at placing in the top 10. “That would be a milestone for him,” the coach said.

Piper Bain leads Edina girls team to state cross country meet BY JOHN SHERMAN – SUN NEWSPAPERS Senior Piper Bain of the Edina High girls cross country team was just starting elementary school the last time a Hornet squad qualified for state. That was 1999, so it has definitely been a long time in between trips. Bain knows what the state meet it all about. She has been there twice before as an individual qualifier. But it will be a new experience for all of her teammates. The state Class AA girls race will begin at 10 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 5, at St. Olaf College in Northfield. The Class AA boys race will follow at 11. Edina qualified for state by finishing second at the Section 6AA race Oct. 26 at Gale Woods Farm in Minnetrista. “I am so excited,” Bain said after the section race. “It was such an emotional race. We have run at Gale Woods three times this year and the course today was as tough as usual.” Bain came into the race battling the flu, but still came within five seconds of

her personal best with a 4K time of 15 minutes, 2 seconds. That performance earned her seventh place. The top 10 individuals and the top two teams are eligible to advance to state. Edina was second in the team standings behind Wayzata. The Trojans had 60 points to Edina’s 69. Eden Prairie was a distant third with 97. Hopkins with 118 and Armstrong and Minneapolis Southwest, each with 136, rounded out the top six in the 14-school section. “This has been one of my favorite seasons so far,” said Bain. “I think every other girl on our team had a personal best today. We wanted this so much.” One reason for the Hornets’ success was the performance of seventh-grader Tate Sweeney, who qualified for state individually by placing 10th in the section. Her time was 15:05. Senior Stephanie Kohn was third for the Hornets and 13th in the section in 15:09. “We work together to push each other in practice,” said Kohn. “The most

important thing to all of us is doing our best.” Elaine Rock didn’t run at sectionals, but did a lot of cheering as one of the alternates. “This is a great group of girls,” she said. “We have worked hard all season.” “We have all been on the team for so long,” said Laura Schmiel, one of four seniors in the Hornets’ section lineup. “Matt Gabrielson, our new coach, pushed us and showed us we could be this good.” Another senior, McKenzie Lee, said, “Edina has not been to state in a long time. But that has always been our dream, and now we’re going.” All seven Hornet runners in the section meet placed in the top 40. In addition to Bain, Sweeney and Kohn, the Hornets ran junior Molly Kuhs (14th), sophomore Bridgit Loeffelholz (25th), Schmiel (35th) and Lee (38th). Rock said the team’s goal for state is to finish in the top three. Bain said her personal goal is to earn All-State with a top-25 finish.

Edina High’s No. 1 girls cross country runner, Piper Bain, has her sights on an All-State award. To earn it, she will need to finish among the top 25 at the state Class AA meet. (Photo by John Sherman – Sun Newspapers)

One great game, one great kick BY JOHN SHERMAN – SUN NEWSPAPERS Edina High football coach Reed Boltmann expected a close game with Hopkins Oct. 25 in the first round of the Class 5A, Section 6 playoffs at Kuhlman Field. But in his wildest imagination, he never expected a 14-year-old freshman would win the game for his Hornets. That freshman, Patrick LeCorre, kicked a 37-yard field goal as time expired to end Hopkins’ season, 38-35. A delirious celebration by Edina’s players followed. On the other side of the field, Hopkins’ players could only shake their heads in disbelief. LeCorre said he wasn’t nervous, even though he had never before tried a field goal in a varsity game. He previously had been kicking for the Edina freshman team, and then Boltmann included him in the playoff plans. The expectation was that LeCorre would handle the kickoffs and take a long field-goal try if the situation arose in the Hopkins game. So what was LeCorre thinking as he lined up for the biggest kick of his life? “I cleared my mind,” said LeCorre. “And I believed I could make the kick.” Coleman Foley snapped the ball to holder Mark Handberg, who set the ball down on the right hash mark. LeCorre timed his steps to the ball and hit it squarely. “It was right down the middle,” he said. Boltmann never doubted LeCorre’s ability to make the kick. “Patrick has a great leg,” he said. “We had Blake Sorem kick the extra points tonight. He’s a little more consistent than Patrick right now, but Patrick is our longdistance guy. He drilled that field goal.” Edina had the ball on the Hopkins 19yard line with three seconds remaining in the fourth quarter when Boltmann sent in the field-goal unit. The Hornets had been moving the ball through the air, but Boltmann said he didn’t hesitate to attempt the field goal. “You have to go with your gut feeling at a time like that,” he said. “Hopkins played a great game … we made just enough plays to win.” Hopkins had tied the score 35-35 with only 28 seconds remaining on David Cliett’s 1-yard touchdown run and Zach Brengman’s extra-point kick. The Royals tried an onside kick, which Edina recovered near midfield. Then two pass completions by Handberg put the Hornets in field-goal range. “We gave an outstanding effort tonight,” said Hopkins head coach John DenHartog, whose team trailed 35-18 at

one point. “It was a great comeback.” DenHartog could have called for a twopoint conversion when the Royals closed the gap to 35-34, but he took the safe route and went with the kick. “We had momentum,” he said. “And I thought our chances were better in overtime.” DenHartog never expected the surprise ending in regulation. “I feel bad for John [DenHartog],” said Boltmann. “I’ve been on that side, too, and I know how tough a loss it was.” Andre McDonald, Hopkins’ All-State wide receiver, said the loss was a heartbreaker. Still, he enjoyed being part of a game that offered exciting plays from start to finish. “I love to play in a game like that with all the pressure and commotion on the sidelines,” he said. “Edina is a great team. They hit us hard and we hit them back.” McDonald was spectacular. He scored on 80- and 32-yard pass plays from quarterback J.T. DenHartog. Alex Hunter scored on a 39-yard pass from DenHartog, and Cliett had two rushing touchdowns. Edina’s offense ran through senior halfback Francisco Hardacker, who scored on runs of 9, 43 and 6 yards in his best performance of the season. He also played safety on defense and recovered a fumble. John Bryan scored on a 4-yard run for the Hornets, and Handberg hit Jake Remes with a 14-yard touchdown pass. Sorem kicked all five extra points. “We played with a lot of heart and intensity,” said Edina cornerback Diondre Green. “It was a great win.” “Winning the last game on our home field means everything to me,” said Hardacker. “Our offensive line played great and John [Bryan] helped open some big holes for me.” With the win, Edina improved to 5-4. Hopkins’ season ended 3-6. “Give Hopkins credit,” Boltmann said. “They came to battle. We stubbed our foot a few times, we fumbled a few times, but we hung in there and played. That’s all a coach can ask for.”
