Edina is not the only city dealing with a four-footed foe. Representatives from 28 metro cities, including Eden Prairie, Richfield and Bloomington, attended a workshop on coyote management Wednesday, Dec. 14, at the South Metro Public Safety Training Facility in Edina. After increasing coyote sightings, as well as a handful of attacks on small dogs in the city, Edina brought a wildlife expert from the Humane Society of the United States to

ECM Publishers, a media company based in Coon Rapids, Minn., has signed a Letter of Intent to acquire the Minnesota Sun Newspapers from American Community Newspapers II located in Dallas, Texas. While ACN has accepted the Letter of Intent, purchase agreement negotiations are ongoing. “This potential combination promises vital hometown journalism for scores of suburban communities,” said Julian Andersen, CEO and Chairman of ECM. “Both of these newspaper groups are staffed and led by talented and effective associates, who will bring vim and vigor to the opportunities and responsibilities of a larger media enterprise.” “ECM is always looking for ways to grow as an information company,” said Marge Winkelman, president and chief operating officer. “ECM has grown over 35 years from a weekly newspaper in Princeton, Minn., to a company with 21 publications delivered to more than 300,000 Minnesota homes.”

The future will bring us great opportunities to serve our readers and advertisers, grow our market share, and develop new print and digital products. ECM publishes 15 newspapers and six shoppers with total weekly circulation of 155,000 and 191,000 respectively. The Sun Group publishes 32 newspapers and two shoppers with total weekly circulation of 357,000 and 38,000 respectively. ECM websites attract 1,000,000 page views a month, and Sun Group websites attract 461,000 page views per month. ECM was created in 1976 by Elmer L. The company began when Andersen bought competing weekly newspapers in Princeton and combined them into the Princeton Union-Eagle. Subsequently, ECM added a commercial web printing plant in Princeton and acquired an independent delivery company that now operates as a division of ECM. In a sequence of transactions over the past 30 years, ECM acquired additional newspapers. For further information, call Marge Winkelman at 763-712-2402. A longtime Edina couple makes Christmas a little sweeter with their annual nativity display. Every year, Alan and Philothea Sweet set up a homemade manger in front of their Edina home, 5904 Merold Drive, where they have lived for about four decades. “It truly tells what Christmas is,” Philothea, 80, said. “We’ve never had a Santa Claus or reindeer running across our lawn.” Alan, 88, built the manger about a decade ago after years of using a smaller set. The skilled craftsman also makes furniture for his two children and three grandchildren in his basement workshop. “Before it gets cold, I put it together on the patio,” he said. “We grab whoever we can get to get it out there.” About five years ago, someone
stole baby Jesus and a lamb from the nativity. A little girl on the Sweets’ street filled the empty cradle with a doll until they could get a permanent replacement from St. Patrick’s Guild in St. Paul. The figures used in the nativity are one-third life size, Alan said. The Sweets, married for 44 years, said they keep a path to the manger shoveled for onlookers. One year, they saw a group of young children kneeling in front of it. They also take care to appreciate the scene, which is lit at night by twinkling blue lights. “I make sure I drive the right way when I come home so I can look at it,” Philothea said. Storey Holland, who attends Our Lady of Grace Church in the Edina with the Sweets, said she treks over from her house about a half-mile away to reflect in front of the manger. “It feels so quiet,” she said.

Edina resident Erik Ellingson, 80, displays the scorecard from the Dec. 1 league bowling game where he bowled a perfect 300 Wednesday, Dec. 21, in his office at Ellingson & Ellingson in Edina. (Photo by Katie Mintz – Sun Newspapers)
Edina 80-year-old bowls a perfect game Accountant Erik Ellingson scores 300 – 12 strikes BY KATIE MINTZ – SUN NEWSPAPERS Erik Ellingson can add another accomplishment to a long career. The Edina resident and founder of Edina accounting firm Ellingson & Ellingson bowled a perfect 300 game earlier this month. “Every strike was perfect. I was really in the groove. They just flowed,” Ellingson said. It was quite a feat for the 80-year-old who “blind bowls,” but not for lack of eyesight. “Sixty-seven years ago, no one told me about spot bowling,” said Ellingson, who doesn’t look at the arrows on the lane or the pins as he makes his approach. “I can’t look at the alley. It’s all rhythm for me.” He’s been bowling that way since his childhood in small town Harmony, Minn., where he got a job setting pins at the local alley at age 12 – in the days before automatic pinsetters. He even continued the technique overseas, playing on a league while stationed with the U.S. Army in Germany during the Korean War.
His perfect game – 12 strikes – came as the second in a three-game series Thursday evening, Dec. 1, during the Thursday Men’s Handicap League at TexaTonka Lanes in St. Louis Park. His first game was below his average 185-190 game. But then the strikes started coming. Bowlers in the packed house gathered around as they piled up. Ellingson said that’s when he began to realize what might happen. “The 10th, 11th and 12th I was quite nervous,” Ellingson said. Most of his teammates have bowled a 300 game – one of them has dozens under his belt. A few years ago, his son, coworker and teammate Rick Ellingson of Minnetonka bowled a perfect game. “I was there that night and I thought, ‘Wow, that’s amazing.’ I never expected to get one,” Ellingson said. But he did. Ellingson said news of the 300 spread like wildfire because of his age. “It turns out I’m one of the oldest ever to do it,” Ellingson said. According to the United States Bowling Congress, the oldest man to bowl 300 in a sanctioned game is 89. Ellingson said he’d hoped to surprise BOWLER: TO PAGE 18

Ledder, Robb wrap up 20 years of service Longtime Edina School Board members attend last meeting Dec. 12 BY KATIE MINTZ – SUN NEWSPAPERS With a unanimous vote, the Edina School Board bid farewell to two longtime members Monday night, Dec. 12. Boardmember Bert Ledder made the motion to adjourn her final meeting, seconded by another outgoing leader Peyton Robb. Robb and Ledder served on the board for a combined 20 years. Both decided not to run for re-election this November. Newly-elected board members Leny Wallen-Friedman and Sarah Patzloff will be sworn in at the first meeting of the year Monday, Jan. 9.
Peyton Robb Robb completed 12 years of service on the school board. He was elected in 1999 and prior to joining the board served on the district’s Finance and Facilities Committee and the site council at
Concord Elementary School. “I’ve been really proud to have the opportunity to serve the Edina Public School community for 12 years,” Robb said. “I think I’ve helped and made a difference, and learned a lot in the journey as well.” Over the dozen years, he said he is most proud to say he had a part in the district’s continued Robb excellence. He attributed much of that success to a focus on personalized learning. “Everyone learns a little differently and a one-size-fits-all approach just doesn’t work for all our kids,” he said. He said the district has done a good job of tracking data closely, which allows teachers to address individual student needs. In addition to academic options, students are also well served by a variety of leadership and extracurricular opportunities. “The focus on a topic, the pursuit of a goal are very important life skills that kids need to have to be successful and at

The eldest graduated in 2007. For about the last 12 years, Robb has run a small niche-marketing firm that helps insurance agents, stockbrokers and other professionals celebrate clients’ birthdays and other occasions. With more time, he said he will look for other opportunities, but will also continue be involved in the community. He is currently serving on the city’s Grandview District Small Area Plan Committee. Robb said the district would continue to do well without him. “I think the board is in very good shape and the district is definitely heading in the right direction,” Robb said. “I think it’s proven out by our results. We remain, I believe, the best district in the state, which is what the community expects. I think we have great leadership in place to continue the excellence.”
the high school we’re reaching a 90 percent level of involvement in extracurricular activities,” Robb said. While on the board, Robb served on a number of district committees and represented Edina at the Minnesota School Boards Association, Association of Metropolitan School Districts, and other groups. Board Chair Randy Meyer said Robb was instrumental in the passage of the facilities referendum. “Peyton has gone above and beyond overseeing particular facility issues and concerns around the district, particularly with the facilities referendum in 2003,” Meyer said. “I think we’ve done a lot in the facilities world to increase the life of our buildings, make them more functional both for children with disabilities, as well as extracurLedder ricular use and energy efficiency,” Robb said. The younger of his two children graduated from Edina High School in 2011.

Exciting times for Edina Public Schools Supt. Ric Dressen looks back on 2011, ahead to 2012 The 2010 calendar year is winding down. While great learning occurred through the last moments of the final day before winter break, the district leadership has had a strong focus on our planning for the future. As superintendent, I look back with much celebration and appreciation, and I look forward with much excitement and hope.
2011 in review I continue to appreciate the amazing team effort by everyone in our school district to promote great learning and life experiences for our young people. The list of 2011 celebrations and successes are extensive. Some of the celebrations were dynamic – like state athletic championships and the high school band trip to China.

celebration as a result of the successful Nov. 8 referendums. The referendums will continue to support learning through technology for the next 10 years.
2012 planning Some of the celebrations were pride-filled – like walking across the graduation stage at the Target Center and the grand opening of the new Cornelia playground. Celebrations also took place as a result of hard work – like balancing the district’s revenue-expenditure budget gap and achieving academic growth for all of our student groupings at all of our schools. We had celebrations that were quietly shared among the teacher, parent and child with a student success story. We had celebrations that were widely recognized – like the district’s international Google award and being named to Newsweek’s Top 100 School Districts. We also have the long-lasting
The new year will provide Edina Public Schools an opportunity to strategically plan for the future. The planning will allow us to dream on what is possible for our young people to ensure their success in a rapidly-changing, culturallydiverse, global society. The strategic work will be shaped by a new vision that will continue to have us be a nationally recognized school district, and to pursue being compared on an international basis. This planning will include the involvement and insights of students, parents, staff and community. The district’s challenge will be to advance its educational mission and maximize its available resources of funds, time, facilities, technology and

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Reform still needed To the editor: In the ongoing debate about controlling government spending versus raising taxes, fairness and accuracy are important. Unfortunately, last week’s letter (“Pledge to not raise taxes not working,” Dec. 15) about property taxes was misleading and partisan. Replacing the state’s Market Value Homestead Credit was supported by the city of Edina and major local government associations. The
Legislature passed and the governor signed the legislation. One reason was that MVHC funding was largely not paid to local governments due to state budget fixes. The past three years Edina was promised up to $300,000, yet received nothing. I voted against that budget fix. Yes, the state’s phantom $261 million MVHC budget – only $89 million was actually paid out – is now gone. In its place is a property value exclusion and $30 million of direct low income property tax relief. And we kept the
staff. The focus of our work will be in providing personalized learning experiences for all students. This will continue to require a team effort. We will build on our current successful practices with a blend of innovation, creativity and hard work. Technology will be a driving force to assist our students in their learning, teachers in their instruction, families in their communications and the district in our operational efficiencies. The strategic plan will be completed in the spring of 2012. Finally, I want to take this opportunity to thank everybody for the successes that have been created this past year. I realize the district still has numerous ways to improve our services and programs. We remain committed to our continuous improvement approach to better meet all learners’ needs. I look forward to an exciting 2012 for our students and our community. Happy holidays, everyone.
state’s much larger local government aid at its previous level, $1.45 billion. Blaming property tax increases, including Edina’s, on the Legislature is hard to defend. Some are not increasing spending and taxes at all, and Edina’s actual state aid stayed the same – nothing. I agree the property value exclusion warrants refining, but anyone planning local budgets assuming increased state aid was unrealistic at best. I have not signed any tax LETTERS: TO NEXT PAGE
Photo captions accompanying the Dec. 15 article “Exploring the wide world of language options” gave the incorrect date of the Chinese class pictured. The class was Wednesday, Dec. 7. Under the “Southdale” heading in the Dec. 15 article “Homeowners will keep trees in right-of-way,” it should note that while most council members indicated comfort providing a $4 million to $5 million combination of loan and tax increment financing to the mall, Councilmember Joni Bennett remains opposed to providing the requested subsidy. City council members support dirty air To the editor: Do you know where our elected officials stand on issues of public welfare, such as air quality? Per the Nov. 24 article “Two Centennial Lakes fireplaces to burn gas,” Council members Mary Brindle and Ann Swenson indicated they were against the proposal to convert the outdoor wood-burning fireplace to cleanerburning gas. Councilmember Josh Sprague, absent at first vote, later weighed in and scotched the proposed conversion, sounding a death knell for
clean air in the park. These votes for smoky air symbolize the refusal of some elected officials to take public health seriously by upholding recreational pollution as the gold standard. Wasn’t the switch to gas intended to enhance accessibility for all people to the park, including those with asthma? To not convert the outdoor fireplace is in conflict with the city’s ban of cigarette smoking in parks, which was established to protect and improve public health. Edina has a legal responsibility to remove barriers that prevent access to public spaces. Like tobacco smoke, wood smoke presents a formidable barrier to many, especially those with asthma. It was also disturbing to read that newly-elected Edina School Boardmember Sarah Patzloff dismissed wood smoke as just a potential nuisance that comes with city living, ignoring the fact that soaring asthma rates affect school attendance and that children’s environmental health is key to their performance in school. I believe that if asked, the majority of Edina citizens would prefer clean air. What’s your vote? Please contact me at info@takebacktheair.com to share your thoughts. Julie Mellum Edina

New Edina police officer sworn in Derek Toll was recently sworn in as the Edina Police Department’s newest officer. Toll began work as a police officer Monday, Dec. 5. City Clerk Debra Mangen administered the oath to him Tuesday, Dec. 6. Toll was sworn in with Police Chief Jeff Long at his side and surrounded by his fellow officers, family and friends. Toll’s father, former Baudette Police Chief Larry Toll, pinned on his badge. “There were a lot of roads I had to go down to get here. Ten years later, here I am,” Toll said. “Without the support of my family, I wouldn’t be here. I couldn’t be prouder or happier.” He recently graduated from Alexandria Technical and Community College with a degree in law enforcement. He worked for the past seven years as a paramedic. “Derek has a passion for his work. We know Derek will do a great job for the Edina Police Department like he did most recently in Sartell,” Long said. “He has already made a difference in the lives of those he serves.”

PUBLIC SAFETY Donation buys new vests for Edina SWAT The Edina Crime Prevention Fund received a $20,000 donation from a donor who wishes to remain anonymous. The monetary gift was made with the intention that new tactical ballistic vests be purchased for the Edina Police Department’s SWAT team. The same donor helped purchase ballistic vests for the SWAT team five years ago. “We are very grateful to receive this generous donation,” said Lt. Jeff Elasky, who serves as commander of the SWAT team. The manufacturer’s warranty on the SWAT vests purchased five years ago ran out in 2009. “It’s important that the officers have peace of mind and protection, that they know that the vests are going to work,” Elasky said. “The vests today offer an even higher level of protection and are lighter, too.” The old vests will be donated to an organization that recycles used equipment and provides it to police departments in need of ballistic protection. While the manufacturer warranty may be expired, often the vest will still effectively protect those who do not have one. New tactical ballistic vests cost about $2,400 each.
EFD provides tips to prevent heating fires A recent fire caused minimal damage to an Edina home thanks to the quick actions of the homeowner and working smoke alarms, according to the Edina Fire Department. However, the fire was preventable. Clothes too close to the home’s gas water heater ignited, spreading to other flammable materials. In addition, the door covering to the 1970s
water heater’s pilot light may have been missing. “This is the prime example of why everyone should check their appliances to make sure they are still in good, working order and also to keep flammables away from any heat source,” Edina Fire Marshal Tom Jenson said. “Heating fires are preventable if precautions are taken.” According to the National Fire Protection Association, 23 percent of home water heater fires had combustibles too close to the heat source. The association recommends keeping any flammable materials at least 3 feet from a heating source.
Keep fire hydrants free from snow The Edina Fire Department is asking residents to take time this winter to dig out fire hydrants on or near their property. Firefighters need hydrants to be readily available when they arrive at a scene. Three feet all around a fire hydrant should be clear of snow and there should be a clear path to the street from it. “The city has about 1,900 fire hydrants,” Edina Fire Chief Marty Scheerer said. “Neither the fire department nor public works has the manpower to dig them out in a major snow event. That’s where Edina’s residents and businesses come in.” During a fire, every second counts. Scheerer said if the space around hydrants is already cleared, valuable time is not wasted locating and digging them out. A fire truck holding 750 gallons of water can be depleted in fewer than four minutes. Residents physically unable to clear a hydrant should ask a neighbor to help or contact the Edina Fire Department, which may be able to assist if available. Info: 952-826-0330.

Anderson bidding Wooddale congregation farewell He will retire after 35 years as senior pastor but remains on as president of NAE BY PAUL WAHL – SUN NEWSPAPERS Christmas is an exciting and busy time for pastors, but the 2011 version of the celebration of the birth of Christ will be poignant for The Rev. Leith Anderson. He will climb to the pulpit at Wooddale Church to give his final Christmas sermon as senior pastor. He will retire after 35 years of service Dec. 31. Anderson will continue to serve as president of the National Association of Evangelicals, a post he has held twice – most recently having taken the position after the resignation of former president Ted Haggard in 2006. Anderson will also have a continuing relationship with Wooddale, as pastor emeritus or a similar role. “It’s the right time,” Anderson said of his decision to step down. “The church is healthy, happy and strong … we’re in a good place. Building off strength is a good thing.” Anderson says he will miss the people who are part of the church, but will be happy to have a lighter schedule. He has seen many changes in the church, which began as The Wayside Chapel in 1943. Later in 1949, the congregation became Wooddale Baptist Church of Richfield.
COLONIAL
During Anderson’s tenure, the church moved into a 63,000-square-foot, 2,000-seat facility on Eden Prairie’s northern edge. A second campus was opened in 2008 in Edina, along with nine church plants across the Twin Cities. Wooddale also took on megachurch status with attendance running into the thousands for five Sunday services in Eden Prairie and two in Edina. Anderson said it was never the c o n g re g at i o n’s goal or his for the church to become Anderson one of the largest in the country. “Wooddale has always been about ministering to people in this region,” he said. Anderson has pastored through a number of changes in the local church, Christianity nationally and internationally. His first challenge at Wooddale was overcoming the congregation’s skepticism over hiring a pastor many thought was “too young.” Looking back he says he spent the first three years in his position more as an interim pastor. Anderson replaced Peter Unruh who had served for 19 years. The church dealt with changes in worship styles as younger members of the congregation shared their desire for

music and ministry approaches that were less liturgical. Today Wooddale offers both traditional and contemporary worship services, along with a more edgy worship style during its Saturday night service. The growth in the scope and impact of Evangelicals has also helped shape Wooddale and other churches, Anderson said. “Faith is a part of our national conversation today whereas it wasn’t as much 35 years ago,” Anderson said. The church is also changing because of the shift in growth an influence of the church away from North America in favor of South American, Africa and Asia. In the United States, church attendance and numerical growth of Christians is flat compared to those areas, Anderson said. Among the challenges for churches today is dealing with immigration issues and the rise in the number and power of the Muslim community. Anderson and the NAE have been at the forefront encouraging a more empathetic approach to immigration that says the current system is broken and emphasizes that an immigrant, just like any other person, is made in the image of God and thus deserves to be treated with respect. Anderson has also been lauded by many for his role as mentor, including to many of the Wooddale pastoral staff. Jill Fox, the church’s young adults pastor, said she came on staff at age 26 with a strong desire to be an effective
leader. “I had no idea that the best education I would get would come from sitting under Leith’s leadership,” she said. “Leith has taught me more about church leadership than I could have possibly dreamed.” She called Anderson a “strong leader” who believes in investing in young leaders. “Leith has opened doors for me to speak and lead that would not have otherwise been possible,” Fox said. “I will miss my mentor and friend, but I am grateful for all he has taught me.” Tom Bell, Wooddale’s pastoral care pastor, has been an associate of Anderson’s for 16 years. “Through his leadership, I’ve learned to look at ‘church’ through the eyes of someone not yet connected,” Bell said. “Leith has given vision and leadership in ways few pastors do.” The church will begin implementing its pastoral succession plan shortly, including a search process that could take up to two years. Grace Church, Eden Prairie’s other mega-church, spent two years searching for its most recent senior pastor. Church consultants say that is not an uncommon time frame. The church may appoint an interim pastor to serve during the search process, Anderson said, adding he is committed to the success of his successor. “I would hope for someone who is faithful in teaching the Bible and loving people, as well as respecting the history of Wooddale while carving a way into the future,” Anderson said.

District OKs double-digit levy increase Majority of tax levy increase due to voterapproved referendums BY KATIE MINTZ – SUN NEWSPAPERS Edina School District residents will see a significant increase in taxes next year – because they voted for them. The Edina School Board unanimously approved its final tax levy for 2012 Monday evening, Dec. 12. At $39.8 million, the levy is 14.7 percent more than the current year, but about 10 percent of the increase is due to passage of technology and operating levies on the Nov. 8 ballot, Director of Business Services Margo Nash said. According to the district, 78 percent of the total levy comes from voterapproved measures. Nash said, while an increase, the
final levy also represents district efforts to reduce taxpayer expenses. When the school board adopted the preliminary levy in September, it did not yet know if referendums on the Nov. 8 ballot would be approved. The $33 million preliminary levy was the state allowed maximum assuming the referendums did not pass. At the same funding level, with passage of the referendums, the total levy would have been $40.3 million, a 16.1 percent increase, had the district not sought further cuts. “The Finance and Facilities Committee recommended in September that we look at each of the individual levy areas for reductions,” Nash said. The district was able to reduce the debt service levy and other levies a combined $467,004, or about 1.2 percent, bringing the total levy to $39.8 million, she said. Of the 14.7 percent increase, 10 per-
cent is attributed to the voter referendums. A few other factors also came into play, Nash said. About 0.5 percent of the increase is due to the elimination of the Market Value Homestead Credit program. The state Legislature replaced the program, which reimbursed local jurisdictions for credits applied to tax bills of homes valued under $414,000, with the market value exclusion program this year. The new program instead reduces the taxable value of homes under $413,800. As a result, many cities, counties and school districts have smaller tax bases this year, leading some to raise tax rates to collect the same amount. About 2.2 percent of the increase came from prior year adjustments for enrollment growth, abatements, unemployment, alternative facilities and cooperative leases, Nash said. Another 2 percent was due to growth in resident enrollment.
For a home that saw a 3 percent decrease in value from $350,000 in 2011 to $339,500 in 2012, school district taxes will increase $203. For a home that saw a 3 percent decrease in value from $550,000 to $533,500, school district taxes will increase $322. The increase was not shown on tax statements sent by Hennepin County this fall before the election. Tax bills received this spring will reflect the increase. At the Dec. 12 meeting, the school board also unanimously authorized financing of $15 million to help with cash flow following the state’s delay of payments to school districts. Nash said the interest on the bond would cost the district about $90,000 to $100,000 this school year, now about halfway over. She said in following years the cost would be greater. She said the fee to borrow the money would be about $15,000.

Board members FROM PAGE 5 served on the district’s Parent Leadership Council and was also on the committee that worked on the 2003 facilities referendum. “One of the things I’m most proud of is seeing the performing arts center at the high school,” built as part of the referendum, she said, noting it serves both students and community members who attend plays, concerts and other events in the space. She ran for the school board eight years ago because the three incumbents “needed a challenge,” Ledder said, noting she has been popular with voters. “The two times that I did run I had the most votes,” Ledder said. “I think I speak for the people that don’t speak. The ones that aren’t there. The ones that can’t speak. The ones that are afraid to speak. There’s still a portion of Edina that doesn’t say anything because they’re afraid to.” In recent years, Ledder was vocal about retaining elementary Spanish language curriculum amid budget cuts and addressing substance use among students. She said one of the most chal-
lenging aspects of service was hiring a new superintendent in 2006. She said the district found the right person. While on the board, Ledder also served on numerous district committees, including chairing the Board Policy Committee and membership on the Board Finance and Facilities Committee, Edina Alternative Compensation Steering Committee and more. “Her time and efforts were in a big way around board policy,” Meyer said. “The thousands and thousands of words that have been changed in policy as a result of Bert’s effort is very, very significant.” Ledder said when she first started on the board, the policy was on a CD. It was later put online “and then all of the sudden it was like this was kind of out of date.” As part of the committee, she went over all the policies, reworking and rewriting many. Meyer said Ledder was a strong advocate for kids, even after her sons graduated in 2003 and 2005. Ledder said she decided not to run for re-election to allow someone with younger children to sit on the board. “We really need that voice. It was tending to be about what is important about high school kids,” she said. She said she has graduated too to a

new line of service. She will be working with the Gustavus Adolphus College Library Associates – one of her sons graduated from the college – to fundraise and increase awareness for the library. Ledder also runs an online cabin décor business that she said is taking more of her time. “I’ve really enjoyed working with the people that I’ve worked with. I hope they continue to still be the best in the state, then in the country,” she said.

Edina teachers win TIES tech awards Erin Plasch and Mark Carlson of Edina Public Schools were recognized as TIES Exceptional Teachers at the TIES 2011 Education Technology Conference held earlier this month. They were among 83 teachers chosen by superintendents in the 46-distric technology consortium for the award, which recognizes teachers who model the best practices in using technology in their classroom and engaging students in learning. Plasch, a gifted resource teacher, seeks to continually expand the use of technology to enhance, personalize and differentiate instruction. Her students participate in online learning using Moodle and use a variety of tools for digital storytelling, including iMovie to create videos and Scratch to animate stories. Plasch received an innovation grant from the Edina Education Fund to implement e-readers into her classroom and saw an increase in engagement in student reading in all of her students. She
recently received a Teaching and Technology certificate through Hamline University, where she was one of 29 Edina teachers participating in the cohort. Because of her work with the cohort, she has inspired staff to use Moodle at the elementary level and begin screen-casting lessons for anywhere and anytime learning. Carlson, a ninth-grade mathematics teacher at Valley View Middle School, began flipping his instruction in the spring of 2009. Creating screen casts of his lessons, he embeds the videos into Moodle for easier student access. Always working to improve his practice, Carlson added formative assessment to the videos last year via Moodle quizzes as a way to gauge student understanding and plan instruction for the following day. Using LaTeX, he has written questions for each section, and students have access to the video if they need to review while taking the formative assessment. Carlson has now embedded three levels of differentiated, standards-based instruction into his daily teaching. He notes that with this pedagogy, students are achieving at a much higher level and he has a better understanding of what
students know and what they don’t. Besides being recognized at the conference, each teacher is featured in the TIES Exceptional Teachers publication and received a certificate.

Coyotes FROM PAGE 1 help policy makers and animal control officers deal with the animals. “We’re trying to get everyone on the same page,” Edina Police Chief Jeff Long said. “We know that we have coyotes in Edina and we know that we have coyotes throughout the state. It can’t be up to one individual municipality to try to reign in the coyote population.” Last spring, there were three reports of coyote attacks on pets in Edina. In two of the incidents, dogs received puncture wounds or lacerations, Edina Animal Control Officer Tim Hunter said. Earlier this month, a fourth attack occurred leaving another dog bruised, Hunter said. Paul Smith said his small dog was attacked Saturday night, Dec. 3, in his backyard near Interlachen Country Club. He and his wife had just let the dog and their larger dog out when they heard a blood-curling scream. “My wife went running out. My little dog was in a coyote’s mouth,” he said during public comment at the city council meeting Dec. 6. “Now we can’t let our dog out in the neighborhood, and I don’t think young kids can go out in the neighborhood,” he said. Howard Goldman, Minnesota state director for the Humane Society of the United States, said he’s hearing similar stories across the metro and beyond. Representatives at the event spanned from St. Cloud to Rosemount. Lynsey White Dasher, the Humane Society’s Washington, D.C.-based urban wildlife specialist who led the workshop, said fear is a common reaction when coyotes are spotted in urban areas, and especially when pets are attacked. Many believe the aggression will escalate to humans. Over the past three decades, however, there have been about 160 recorded
attacks on humans, mostly in southwest states, she said. That’s far less than one a year. “You’re more likely to be killed by a champagne cork or a golf ball than you are to be bit by a coyote,” said Dasher, who participated in one of the longestrunning coyote studies in Cook County, Ill., and speaks to cities across the nation. Still, policy makers and animal control officers, under pressure from constituents, might decide to remove coyotes either through relocation or lethal measures, she said. Not only is the practice inhumane and expensive, it is also ineffective, she said. Dasher cited a seven-year study conducted in Colorado. Every year, between 60 percent and 75 percent of the coyote population in an area was killed. The coyotes were back to prestudy population within eight months after the study concluded, she said. She said the best approach to living with coyotes involves changing both coyote and human behavior. Dasher recommends a comprehensive management plan, like one developed by Denver, Colo., that focuses on monitoring and collecting data, education and outreach and coyote hazing. “Every time we see a coyote and don’t react we’re teaching coyotes that we’re nothing to be afraid of,” Dasher said. Hazing is meant to re-instill the natural fear of humans in coyotes that have grown comfortable with humans in urban settings. It includes yelling and waving arms, or using other noisemakers, to scare away the animal. Dasher said it’s important multiple people participate in hazing so coyotes don’t learn only to stay away from policemen in navy blue shirts. After three hazing scares, coyotes usually keep out of human sight, she said. The fear is also passed to the coyote’s family and offspring. “The beauty of hazing is anybody can do it at any time. You don’t have to be an animal control officer,” she said.
In the Community, With the Community, For the Community
She said human behavior must also be changed. In addition to hazing, people should learn to protect their pets by not leaving them unattended outdoors and to eliminate food attractants that draw coyotes close to homes, including pet food, compost and trash. Children should also be taught to recognize coyotes and to never run from a coyote, as it might prompt a predatory response. Bloomington Police Sgt. Todd Lewis, who oversees the city’s animal control officers and attended the workshop, said there have been no reported attacks on pets in Bloomington. Coyote sightings are isolated. “We’re affected by coyotes and other critters. The main thing is keeping food away,” he said. Bloomington revised its wildlife feeding ordinance in 2009 to limit food to containers 5 feet off the ground or higher, with the exception of birdseed mixtures, to primarily address deer and goose issues. It also impacts coyotes, Lewis said. He said he plans to put education materials from the workshop on the city’s website as well. In Edina, Hunter said the city would offer hazing training early next year in targeted neighborhoods where coyotes are prevalent. Last spring, the city discussed a proposed policy that would allow wildlife management professionals, at city discretion, to use traps or discharge firearms in city limits to remove problem coyotes. The policy never came back for council approval and the measures have not been used, Hunter said. He believes education and hazing are the best methods moving forward. In the most recent coyote attack on a dog, he said the resident had seen the coyote in his backyard 10 or more times before the incident. “It’s a perfect example where if he had known or understood some of the practices he could have hazed and harassed that coyote to the point where the coyote wouldn’t be coming back,” Hunter said.

Bowler FROM PAGE 4 his wife with the news when he got home from the game, but she already heard. Immediately following the final strike, a teammate was on the phone with his son, who stayed home sick from league that night. “I’m just glad he got to experience that,” the younger Ellingson said. Ellingson has since also received congratulations from friends and clients from 34 years of business in Edina. He still works everyday at Ellingson & Ellingson, where three of his six children are also certified public accountants. He plans to continue working and bowling for years to come. “As long as I can bowl I’ll bowl,” he said.

A&J Painting is a family owned and operated business. A&J Painting is a family owned and operated business that was started 15 years ago with my sons Andrew, Jeremiah, and David. In today’s economic climate we have maintained a healthy business due to our professional approach and work ethic that carries the highest standards of quality for every job. We have thrived over the years because of the volume of callbacks and customer referrals from previously contracted jobs. No contract is too big or too small for our company. A&J Painting operates as a licensed and insured painting company that offers trained and skilled (journeyman) employee’s to paint and remodel your home or business. All of our employee’s have been with the company for several years and each has been trained to the highest standards. We take pride in the honesty, integrity, and character of the young men we have employed. My son Andrew is a highly skilled and trained carpenter. He also does taping, knock down ceilings, tiling, installs plumbing, lighting fixtures, countertops and offers many types of custom carpentry. Andrew operates a professional spray booth off site for finishes on cabinetry and furniture. His current focus is on remodeling, updating, and modernizing homes and
businesses. Andrew’s perfectionist approach to every job and the extent of his skill set have made him one of the best craftsman in the Twin Cities. My other two sons run the painting end of the business and are also professionally trained Artists. Jeremiah attended the Minneapolis College of Art and Design and later studied under the mentorship of the nationally renowned portrait and fresco painter Mark Balma. David similarly was accepted into a full time master apprenticeship program at the young age of 16 at the highly respected Atelier Lack Studio. They followed in the family tradition of mastering a professional craft and skill which they have brought to our company. Between the two they offer 25 years of experience painting interior and exterior homes in the metro area with our family business. A&J Painting takes great pride in our ability to make a true and lasting impression on you. I can’t tell you how many letters and calls I have received over the years from customers who just wanted to share with me what a great job we did. Personal experience inspires The Pink Link When Edina native and St. Louis Park resident Jeff Troldahl’s father passed away in January following his mother’s death from cancer in 2003, he sought refuge in the garage working on bicycles. “I was fitting a bicycle chain when it came to me,” Troldahl said. “We’re all connected like the links in a chain, and we need to hold on to each other.” This garage epiphany inspired Troldahl, a professional artist, to create The Pink Link jewelry as a way to support those involved with cancer in any
way, whom he believes to be everyone. “We have all lost to cancer in some way – or will in the future,” he said. “The idea is to wear a Pink Link in support of someone you love who is fighting cancer, someone you lost to cancer, or someone you know who needs your support for any reason. My hope is that people will give them to others with the message ‘I am here. I’m connected to you.’” The links are made from recycled bicycle chains. Troldahl breaks down chains, cleans the individual links, then hand paints each one. The Breast Cancer Awareness Association has partnered with Troldahl to sell The Pink Link at their events this year. The jewelry has also found a home at many local bike shops. Minnesotan James Rienstra, who biked from Minnesota to Alaska to raise money for cancer research, has been wearing a Pink Link necklace. To learn more about The Pink Link, visit linksupport.org.

Hornets sweep Edina Classic Edina tops EP Eagles 4-1 in the final game BY JOHN SHERMAN – SUN NEWSPAPERS Edina High’s boys hockey team improved to 7-1 with a three-game sweep in the Edina Classic last week at Braemar Arena. The Hornets opened with a 4-3 victory over Grand Rapids, and then scored bookend 4-1 victories over Elk River and Eden Prairie. “We played three different types of opponents,” said Edina head coach Curt Giles. “Grand Rapids is a big, strong team. Elk River is a team that comes at you hard physically and Eden Prairie is very quick and very skilled; a relentless team.” Giles said one key to the tournament championship was “20 kids chipping in.” Another key was the goaltending of Willy Benjamin, who had 26 saves against
Eden Prairie, including 15 in the second period. Bo Brauer, Connor Hurley, Nick Leer and Louie Nanne scored Edina’s goals in the final game. Hurley had two goals in the victory over Elk River while teammates Dylan Malmquist and Brauer had one apiece. Brauer took over against Grand Rapids, scoring two goals. Malmquist and Andy Jordahl had one each. “With our team, we’re not looking for just one or two players to carry us,” said Giles. “Each of our lines played well in the tournament. They’re giving us good production, offensively and defensively. I am enjoying the season because our players are so excited, so willing to learn.” Next for the Hornets is the Schwan Cup Gold Division event Dec. 26-28 at the University of Minnesota’s Ridder Arena and Xcel Energy Center. In first round games Monday, Dec. 26, BOYS HOKCEY: TO PAGE 32
The Benilde-St. Margaret’s forward had six points on a goal and five assists in the Red Knights’ 15-2 nonconference boys hockey win over Holy Angels Dec. 13.
Connor Hurley Two goals from Hurley helped lift the Edina High boys hockey team to a 4-1 victory over Elk River Dec. 16 in the Edina Classic at Braemar Arena.
Madeline Rodriguez M.C. McGrory, Edina High’s girls basketball point guard, was sidelined by a concussion for a game with Chaska Dec. 16. Rodriguez stepped into McGrory’s spot and scored 15 points in the Hornets’ 61-46 victory. She had five assists and only one turnover. The Edina girls, coached by Matt Nilsen, are 7-0 this season.
Graham Woodward The Edina High boys basketball guard led the way with 19 points as the Hornets defeated Chaska 68-44 Dec. 15 at Edina Community Center. Woodward came through with 29 points Dec. 17 in the Hornets’ 68-53 victory over Orono.

Hornets find a cure for winter blues with wins Edina downs Chaska, Orono back-to-back BY JOHN SHERMAN – SUN NEWSPAPERS Winter blues had a grip on the Edina High boys basketball team through the first four games of the season. Then the sun came out last week, and Edina beat Chaska and Orono in back-to-back games. “It’s funny how your mental health can change with a couple wins,” said Edina head coach Pat Dorsey, whose team improved to 2-4. Now the Hornets are determined to keep their winning streak alive, and with the annual Edina Classic coming up, there’s opportunity in the works. The tournament will benefit local food shelves. Fans are encouraged to bring canned food donations to the games each night. “We have the same four teams as last year for the tournament,” said Dorsey. In addition to Edina, the teams are St. Louis Park, Armstrong and Northfield. First night pairings Wednesday, Dec. 28, are St. Louis Park against Northfield at 6 and Edina against Armstrong at 8. The second night, Thursday, Dec. 29, Wednesday’s losers will play at 6 and Wednesday’s winners will play in the title game at 8. “The four teams are evenly
matched,” said Dorsey. “Are we favored to win? Well, we’re favored to show up.” The Hornets showed up against Chaska Dec. 13 and routed the Hawks 68-44. Junior guard Graham Woodward sparked Edina with 19 points and Dane Teuteberg and Derek Hill each scored 10. “Graham has been playing very well at the point,” said Dorsey. “I feel like we have a really good guard situation with Graham, Derek, Marley Allison and Jack McGarry.” On the front line, the Hornets have had improved rebounding stats from Teuteberg, Philip DeBerg and Mark Handberg. “We aren’t the biggest team,” said Dorsey. “But we are starting to rebound better.” Handberg pulled down 10 boards in the Chaska game. Edina defeated Orono 68-53 Dec. 17 at Edina Community Center. Woodward had a season-high 29 points and DeBerg scored a seasonhigh of his own with 26. “Our defense has turned it around since the beginning of the season,” said Dorsey. “We are starting to cover shooters better and pressure the ball better in addition to rebounding better. “Earlier in the season we played teams like Eastview and Lakeville North. Teams like them can make your flaws look bigger.”

Edina High girls basketball team ranked 2nd in state Hornets roll with 7-0 record in early games BY JOHN SHERMAN – SUN NEWSPAPERS Ranked second in the state in Class 4A by Associated Press, the Edina High girls basketball team is getting ready to play in the St. Michael-Albertville Tournament over the holidays. “It’s early – still real early,” said Hornet head coach Matt Nilsen earlier this week. “We’re winning, but we had two players [M.C. McGrory and Vivian Engen] out with concussions for our game with Chaska Friday night [Dec.
16].” Edina still won the game 61-46. Madeline Rodriguez stepped in for McGrory at point guard and scored 15 points. She also had five assists. “Madeline hasn’t played a lot of point guard,” said Nilsen, “but she did a nice job with five assists and only one turnover. “Our team’s mentality is that when someone is out, everyone else steps up.” Lindsey Johnson scored 13 points for Edina and Katybeth Biewen added 11. Kate Morton, a ninth-grader, went 5-for5 from the field and scored 10 points. Julia Good finished with eight points.
In its other game last week, Edina stopped Lakeville North 47-38. North’s coach, Andy Berkvam, is in the state girls basketball coaches hall of fame and has three state championships to his credit. “Lakeville North has one of the top two or three programs in the state, and Andy has won state championships with three different types of teams,” said Nilsen. “Before we played them, they had just taken Hopkins to overtime.” Hopkins is ranked No. 1 in state in Class 4A. Edina’s balance was evident once again. McGrory led the attack with 18
points. Biewen and Good each scored eight and Rodriguez added seven. “Lakeville North played a triangleand-two [defense] against us,” said Nilsen. “They covered McGrory and Biewen man-to-man. Julia [Good] hit two three-point shots, and Madeline [Rodriguez] had a nice game.” The St. Michael-Albertville tourney opens at 5 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 29, with Edina playing Totino-Grace. A game between St. Michael-Albertville and Bismarck, N.D., will follow at 7. The third-place game will be at 5 p.m. Friday, Dec. 30, and the title game will be played at 7.

Hornet girls tie No. 1 Roseville Raiders, 2-2 Edina is ready to host ABRA Auto Body tourney Dec. 27-29 BY JOHN SHERMAN – SUN NEWSPAPERS For the past three years, Edina High’s girls hockey team has been on the threshold of winning a state Class AA championship. Coach Laura Slominski and her girls have seen the shimmer of bronze and silver medals, but everyone connected with the Hornet program agrees there’s no substitute for gold. In a non-conference game Dec. 13, the Hornets tied Roseville, the No. 1-ranked team in Let’s Play Hockey’s Class AA rankings, 2-2. The tie gave Edina a season record of 6-2-3. Senior goalie Maddie Dahl was Edina’s No. 1 star with 44 saves while seniors Anna Bartz and Megan Armstrong
scored Edina’s goals. Sophomores Riley Anderson and Emily Eide were credited with assists. To win a state title, Edina will have to go through teams such as Roseville, Minnetonka, Hill-Murray and Benilde-St. Margaret’s. Edina is currently ranked fourth in Class AA. “Before the Roseville game, we talked about working hard as a team,” said Slominski. “We didn’t feel we gave our best effort in the previous game [Dec. 10 against third-ranked Hill-Murray].” The Hornets lost to Hill-Murray 2-1, but made up for it with a season-best performance against Roseville. Fans at Braemar Arena went home satisfied with Edina’s ability to compete with the state’s top-ranked team. In a Lake Conference game Dec. 17, Edina tied Hopkins 2-2 at Minnetonka Ice Arena. Armstrong and Sarah Nielsen scored for the Hornets while Dahl had 20 saves in goal. Next for the Hornets is the ABRA Auto
Body Classic Tuesday, Dec. 27, through Thursday, Dec. 29, at Braemar Arena. “We are always excited to play in the tournament,” said Slominski. “I am very happy with the depth of the field this year. Many of the teams are coming back from last year, and Stillwater is a good addition.” If all goes well for Edina, the Hornets could have a rematch with Hill-Murray in the semifinals.
ABRA schedule Tuesday, Dec. 27: noon – Lakeville South vs. Hopkins; 2:15 p.m. – Duluth vs. Hill-Murray; 5 p.m. – Grand Rapids vs. Coon Rapids; 7:15 p.m. – Edina vs. Irondale. Wednesday, Dec. 28: noon and 2:15 p.m. – consolation semifinals; 5 and 7:15 p.m. – semifinals. Thursday, Dec. 29: 11 a.m. – seventh place; 1:15 p.m. – consolation championship; 3:30 p.m. – third place; 6 p.m. – championship.
Boys hockey FROM PAGE 30 at Ridder Arena, Holy Angels will play St. Thomas at 2 p.m., Burnsville will play Duluth East at 2:30, Minnetonka will play Hill-Murray at 6 and Edina will play Blaine at 8:30. Semifinals are 5:30 and 8 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 27, at Xcel Energy Center. The title game will be played at 8 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 28, at Xcel. Duluth East is currently ranked No. 1 in the state in Class 2A and Minnetonka is ranked No. 2. To win a Schwan Cup Gold title, Edina would have to beat No. 1 and No. 2 on back-to-back nights. However, Giles is taking nothing for granted in the quarterfinals against Blaine. “Blaine has a very good program,” he said. “Haven’t they gone to state six years in a row?” Yes, they have.

By: Ali Holman, co-owner of www.coreconditioningtraining.com I think we can all agree that eating is fun. Not only is it a way for us to socialize, reward ourselves and comfort ourselves, it also is the one area of fitness where people have the most trouble. Wouldn’t it be great to know that the choices you make are actually helping your fitness program? More importantly, wouldn’t it be even better to banish the word “diet” from your vocabulary? Chances are, if you are embarking on a “diet”, it will have a beginning and an end. The end is usually followed by slowly going back to old habits and ends you right back where you started. With our clients, we really encourage them to focus on a Lifestyle Change with room for “cheat meals” and realistic goals; which inevitably lead to lifelong results and without the emotional roller coaster of a diet.
Core/Conditioning Training’s List of “Fat Burning Foods”
eggs
low-fat dairy
Eggs are high in protein and low in calories. You may have heard all the warnings about eggs and your health: opt for eggwhites for the low-cholesterol, fatburning effect. Eggs also contain the vitamin B-12, a great supplement for breaking down fat cells.
Studies show that women who eat low-fat dairy products (such as non-fat yogurt and low-fat milk) three to four times a day lost 70 percent more fat than low-dairy dieters.
beans
oatmeal
Beans are one of the best sources of protein, fiber and iron. Some of the best beans to ear are: • Navy Beans • White Beans • Kidney Beans • Lima Beans
Oatmeal is loaded with soluble fiber, which helps reduce blood cholesterol by flushing those bad digestive acids out of your system. Skip the flavored oatmeals - you lose out on all the health benefits. If you must sweeten your oatmeal, do so by adding fruit.
olive oil
lean meats
Certain fats are good for you, and your body needs them. Olive oil is one of those “good fats.” It helps you burn fat and keeps your cholesterol down. One ounce of extra virgin olive oil contains about 85% of the daily value for monosaturated fat.
Search for lean meats - chicken (baked, broiled, grilled), fish and turkey - which are all high in protein. It is a good rule of thumb to consume at least one half-gram protein per pound of body weight each day. A chicken breast gets you well on your way, with about 22 grams of protein.
whole grains
interval training
Our body needs carbohydrates, despite what the fad diets tell you. Avoid processed carbohydrates such as white breads, bagles, pastas and white rice and look for whole grains that have not been processed and contain the fiber and minerals your body needs.
Interval training is defined as short, repeated bouts of intense exercise with minimal rest. You can burn major calories and get an all-over workout in less than 30 minutes. When you see people who are “cut,” chances ar they are partaking in interval training.
