In 1994, they went into business together, buying the former Bloomington Sinclair & Tire. They bought Southdale Sinclair & Tire in Edina in 1997. They recently changed the name to Southdale Automotive Professionals. “We were best men in each other’s weddings. We’ve been business partners for 18 years,” said Lindsey, a lifelong Bloomington resident
For many years, they operated the only two full-service gas stations in the area, Lindsey said. In 2007, they sold the Bloomington property where a Richfield Bloomington Credit Union branch now stands. The right offer finally came along for the Edina property at the corner of 70th Street and France Avenue, where they also run an auto repair and tire shop, Lindsey said.

The Edina Swim Club will get priority access to the Edina Aquatic Center beginning in summer 2013. The Edina City Council voted unanimously Tuesday, Dec. 20, to reaffirm the swim club’s position as the official youth association for the sport in Edina, and directed staff to draft a policy for the municipal pool granting priority access to the official association if it maintains at least 75 percent resident membership. “We do this as a city because we ask that these groups fulfill the need for these athletics within our community, Councilmember Ann Swenson said. “As part of that, we offer them the ability to get the fields, the pool, the rinks that they need to do that. The decision came following a request from the Edina Swim Club for two additional hours at the aquatic center to accommodate growing numbers in summer 2012. The requested time slot has been used by the Eden Prairie-based Aquajets Swim Team for nearly a decade. While the city already has a policy in place giving other official youth athletic associations priority use of city gyms, outdoor fields and hockey rinks, Park and Recreation Director John Keprios said similar policies did not exist for the aquatic center or other enterprise facilities, including the ice arena and golf course. The Edina Park Board heard the Edina Swim Club’s request in November but opted not to adopt a use policy for the pool that would have given the Edina Swim Club priority. It instead directed staff to decide how to allocate hours this summer while it developed a policy for implementation the following year. Absent a policy, Keprios said at the time, each club would keep its existing practice time for summer 2012. In summer 2011, the
Edina Swim Club practiced 6-9:30 a.m. and the Aquajets 9:30-11:30 a.m. before the aquatic center opened to the general public. The Edina Swim Club appealed the decision, arguing it had an established history in the city dating back to 1957 and was recognized as the official youth association for swimming. In 2005, Edina formed a Youth Sports Task Force to address issues around access to facilities. The task force recommended each sport has one recognized association, and that those associations maintain 90 percent residency, which they all did at the time, including the Edina Swim Club. The council subsequently adopted the policy giving priority access to city gyms, fields and rinks to associations that maintain the 90 percent Edina resident threshold. The Edina Swim Club has since gone to 75 percent Edina residents. The Aquajets is comprised of about 25 percent Edina residents, according to city staff. Council members said they were comfortable setting the pool policy at 75 percent, since the same standard was used when the other policy was established. At Councilmember Joni Bennett’s request, staff will also re-examine youth sport association policies for possible simplification and standardization. Keprios said for summer 2012, the Aquajets will retain their practice time. The city entered a contract with the Aquajets for hours following the park board decision in November. He said that contract could not be broken, but in future summers, the Edina Swim Club will have right of first refusal for use of the pool outside of regular public hours, Keprios said. The Aquajets have held summer practices at the pool since forming in 2002. The team trains the rest of the year at its own indoor facility, the Aquajets Aquatic Center, in Eden Prairie.

Edina adopts l.79 percent levy increase City says debt reduction measure providing relief to taxpayers BY KATIE MINTZ – SUN NEWSPAPERS Edina is using fund balance from 2011 to help keep property taxes down in 2012. The Edina City Council unanimously approved its 2012 property tax levy Tuesday, Dec. 20. The $26.25 million levy represents a 1.79 percent increase from 2011. While the general fund levy will go up about 2.73 percent next year to pay for city services, the debt service levy will decrease 3.65 percent. City Manager Scott Neal said $1.5 million in debt reduction helped to bring the total property levy increase in 2012 down from a potential 3.26 percent to 1.79 percent. Using fund balance from 2011, the 2012 debt service levy will be reduced by approximately $378,000 for immediate tax relief, he said. Another $155,000 KAREL SMITH 612-986-3704
special assessment will be prepaid for intermediate relief. Edina will also see long-term relief by allocating $950,000 to prepay bonds, Neal said. “There is property tax relief in the 2012 city budget,” Neal said. The 1.79 percent levy increase will have a slight impact on the median valued home in Edina. Last year, the median -EDINA home valued at $410,800 paid $1,039 in city taxes. This year, the median home value has gone down to $403,000, and that home will pay $1,067 in city taxes – an increase of $28, or 2.7 percent. Had there been a 3.26 percent levy increase, the median valued home would have paid $1,083 in city taxes – a $44 increase. According to the city, under the adopted levy, more than 5,700 residential parcels, or about one-third of all homes, will see a decrease in their property taxes. “One-third of our single family

properties will have no property tax increase in 2012. We did that with $378,000 of tax relief in 2012 and $1.1 million of additional tax relief in the future,” Neal said. Approximately 95 percent of homes, or about 15,200 properties, will see property tax increase of less than 5 percent. The 2012 city MAYOR JIM HOVLAND general fund budget of $30.85 million, also approved Tuesday, will maintain city services at the current level, according to city staff. It adds one new full-time position – a facility manager who will oversee all city buildings. Two other full-time positions are also added – storm water engineer and economic development director – through other governmental funds not supported by general property tax revenue. The city currently has 275 full-time equivalent positions, down from about 280 two years ago. The new budget will bring the total to 278.

“I think it’s important to our residents that they understand that we’ve really worked hard, as you guys have, to keep [that number down], because 70-some percent of our budget is employees,” Councilmember Ann Swenson said. During the budget discussion, Neal presented a comparison of 2011 property taxes in neighboring cities. Last year, owners of a $411,000 home in Edina paid less in city taxes than owners of the same value home in Eden Prairie, Minnetonka, Bloomington, St. Louis Park, Hopkins, Richfield and Minneapolis. An Edina homeowner would have paid $1,040 in city taxes, with a total tax bill of $5,058, while a Minneapolis homeowner at the top of the list would have paid $2,967 in city taxes, with a total tax bill of $6,862. “We’ve done a great job I think,” Mayor Jim Hovland said. “I praise my fellow council members for working hard, and staff as well, to try to come up with a budget that works for our city to allow us to deliver the traditionally high level of service at the most economical cost possible.”

Don’t make 5 biggest weight loss mistakes Edina Weight Loss Challenge begins in January Each year at this time, weight loss is a lively topic for discussion – for after the holidays. A good friend of mine recently said, “People are so worried about what they eat between Christmas and the New Year, but they really should be worried about what they eat between the New Year and Christmas.” One option to address these important nutrition issues in the New Year is offered through Edina Community Education’s Edina Weight Loss Challenge. This course is designed to help people learn how to lose weight, feel great and most importantly, keep it off. Plus, participants actually earn money for losing weight. Now is also a great time to

dispel some mistakes people sometimes make regarding weight loss. 1. Trying to change a behavior without changing personal belief: Some simply try to lose weight or change habits without believing that they actually will or can achieve it. We all have choices and recognizing that we truly can do anything we put our minds to is empowering. Every one of us has achieved goals we have set out to accomplish. So can you if you put your mind to it. 2. Having unrealistic expectations: A nutritional plan is not a one-size-fits-all deal. Who do you know that has lost 30 pounds in 30 days? An
LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Fortunate for giving community To the editor: I would like to thank the Edina community members who came out to support our fourth annual Holiday Pops, sponsored by the BraemarCity of Lakes Figure Skating Club. The bleachers were full and spectators were able to view some of the best figure skating in North America. In addition, a synchronized skating team from Australia performed at the event. It was a fantastic holiday show, which raised $1,810 and produced 28 shopping bags full of dry and canned goods for VEAP, a local food shelf. In four years, this event has contributed $7,052 to VEAP. average of 2-3 pounds is realistic and attainable. Even if you lose one pound a week, that’s 52 pounds in a year. Use SMART goals: specific, measurable, attainable, realistic and timely. 3. Lacking accountability: Of New Year’s resolutions, almost 90 percent are broken within the first seven days. Statistics prove it is hard to have self-accountability. Human beliefs are better and stronger together. Joining a group or having an “accountability person” is important for long-term results. This group or person should be a place for support, education and coaching. 4. Lacking knowledge: There is so much information that exists, you can read one article, flip the page and another article contradicts the previous one! Learning (or maybe relearning) the basics of what the human body needs, how much it needs and why is very helpful. Knowing the truths
about nutrition and exercise is essential and freeing. 5. Having a true measure of success: Most people are focused on the scale, and aren’t accounting for inch loss. Who tracks that? Know what success looks like for you. Most people are too busy being on the diet or plan and are not focused on their goals and achievements. Designing a plan of success that fits your life is essential. At the end of the day, weight loss is not a simple, easy matter. It is individual and it is highly personal. The Edina Weight Loss Challenge supports those philosophies and welcomes all people and all programs. We hope to see less of you in 2012. Gerval-Bridenstine is an instructor of Edina Weight Loss Challenge classes offered through Community Education. New Edina Weight Loss Challenge sessions start Monday, Jan. 9. Year in review FROM PAGE 1 relocate from his location in the future food court. He said at first they wanted him to foot the cost, although he spent $65,000 about seven years ago to move to his current location. He said he thought they came to an agreement, but realized about 60 days ago that was not the case. “Next thing I know I received some documents in the mail that terminated my lease,” he said. The third-generation cobbler has to be out of the space by Dec. 31. Christmas Eve was expected to be his last day of business. He plans to move the shop to a space near West 66th Street and Penn Avenue South in Richield. “I’m not going to let these guys dictate my business, my life, my family legacy here,” said Roase, a Bloomington resident. “I feel it’s their loss.” Roase’s grandfather Ralph began the business in 1947 at the corner of 50th Street and Xerxes Avenue in Minneapolis. He moved to the mall shortly after it opened in 1956. Roase has been working full-time in the shop since graduating high school in 1976. He purchased the business, which is the mall’s last original tenant, from his father Ron about a dozen years ago. After other media picked up the story this month, Roase said he’s heard from hundreds of loyal customers, who are also giving Simon a piece of their mind. “I’ve got customers that say they
aren’t coming back here, no way, no how,” he said. “There are a lot of people out there that are really trying to help me.” He’s received tips on available real estate and even an offer from a familyowned moving company to get all his equipment out of the shop at no cost. “It’s overwhelming how much everyone cares. It’s all this support that’s making me fight that much harder to find my new location,” Roase said. Talks also continue between city of Edina staff and Simon representatives regarding $5.38 million in requested grant funds to help carryout additional renovations at the nation’s first indoor shopping mall. Simon said it would match the amount with close to $10 million. The work would be in addition to $20 million allocated for the Herberger’s space and second-floor changes. Some Edina City Council members indicated they’d be comfortable providing about $4 million to $5 million in public funds through a blend of tax increment financing and low- or no-interest loan, but not a direct grant. At least one council member remains opposed to providing the requested subsidy.

Edina finds new ways to get citizen input
The Edina City Council and new City Manager Scott Neal, who began blogging his second day on the job in late 2010, made reaching out to residents a priority. The first quality of life survey in more than a decade was conducted in the spring by Decision Resources Ltd. which last surveyed the city in 1999. The telephone survey of about 400 residents asked approximately 150-questions about development, taxes and city services including parks and recreation, public safety, communications and more. Results were presented to the Edina City Council in July. Neal said the data would be used to inform city decisions. Going forward, the city will likely survey

District administration was hopeful it would be the last time, even in the face of increasing proficiency targets. “The really great news is that as the standards got higher and we got closer to 100 percent, as a district we made it,” said Mary Manderfeld, director of enrollment and school improvement.

This fall, with the non-partisan Citizens League, the city held four public engagement workshops and an online workshop on the proposed 2012 budget. Just over 40 people participated at the workshops, where they responded to questions about budget priorities using an audience response system. The city council discussed the results before adopting the final budget and levy Tuesday, Dec. 20. Council members said they’d like to hold the budget workshops again next year.

bit according to the Chinese Zodiac, but 2011 in Edina was the year of the coyote. Coyote sightings and attacks on small dogs dominated headlines this year. The first-ever attack on a pet by a coyote was reported in April at a home near Pamela Park. According to Animal Control Officer Tim Hunter, this spring, there were three reports of coyote attacks on dogs in Edina. In two of the incidents, dogs received puncture wounds or lacerations. Another dog was left with bruises after an attack this month. As the sightings increased, residents

Year in review FROM PREVIOUS PAGE and Edina City Council members struggled to find a way to address the issue. At first, Edina Police Chief Jeff Long and Hunter recommended education as the best course. Residents were advised not to leave their pets unattended outdoors, to eliminate food attractants and limit hiding areas by trimming bushes. With more pressure, the city council discussed a proposed policy in May that would allow wildlife management professionals, at city discretion, to use traps or discharge firearms in city limits to remove problem coyotes. The policy never came back for council approval and the measures have not been used, Hunter said. After several quiet months, in December, Edina hosted a Humane Society of the United States workshop on coyote management attended by representatives from 28 metro cities. The organization’s urban wildlife specialist recommended a comprehensive management plan that focuses on monitoring and collecting data, education and outreach and coyote hazing to re-instill coyotes’ natural fear of humans was recommended. Hunter said the city would offer hazing training early next year in targeted neighborhoods where coyotes are prevalent.

Hennepin County District Court with two separate felony counts of second-degree burglary in June and September. The June charge relates to an attempted burglary in Minneapolis around the same time as the Edina burglaries. According to the criminal complaint, in April, Minneapolis officers published photos from a video caught by a surveillance system at a home where the phone line was cut. Several callers identified the man pictured as Pesheck. One caller said Pesheck was storing stolen goods in St. Louis Park. Edina Police Department officers observed Pesheck at the storage facility. A subsequent search resulted in the recovery of stolen property. The more recent charge dates back to a 2009 burglary in Maple Grove. According to the criminal complaint, in June 2011, the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension notified Maple Grove police that shoe prints found in inside a burglarized home matched the shoes Pesheck was wearing when arrested near the site. He is scheduled to appear in court Jan. 19 on both charges.

Year in review FROM PAGE 12 In the somewhat unusual election, would-be candidates Ben Rider and Jason Berger notified Edina Public Schools they were no longer actively seeking election after the August cut-off to have their names removed from the ballot. Rider bowed out of the race quietly in early September citing other obligations. Berger withdrew from the election in October amid media attention to his alleged online writings. Berger’s alleged Internet activity was called into question on local news website Edina Patch (edina.patch.com) by blogger and political operative Dick Novack. Novack of Edina, who blogs in Patch’s Local Voices section, said he connected troubling content on several websites to Berger. Berger acknowledged writing some of the items he was linked to by Novack. He denied affiliation with others. Among the pieces he acknowledged authoring was a post on his blog The Occidental Man (theoccidentalman.blogspot.com). In a May 2009 entry, Berger wrote, in part, “A corollary to the Unified Field Theory of Modern Politics would be that the Democratic Party has become the party of single women, soft males, and homosexuals.” Berger said that post and other items mentioned by Novack were either taken out of context or meant to be humorous. He said he was withdrawing from the race “in order to spend the remaining time defending my reputation to the many people who have been kind enough to support me.” The three winners, incumbent Cathy Cella and newcomers Sarah Patzloff and Leny Wallen-Friedman, were the only candidates remaining in the race after the two others withdrew and easily won election. Cella, Patzloff and Wallen-Friedman are expected to take the oath of office at the Monday, Jan. 9, school board meeting. Longtime board members Peyton Robb
and Bert Ledder did not run for re-election.
District voters approve technology referendum Edina residents continued a long tradition of support for local schools and approved a $45 million technology levy in November. Edina Public Schools’ request to renew and increase the annual capital levy for technology from $1 million to $4.5 million for the next 10 years was met with 72 percent approval. Voters also easily renewed the district’s $3 million annual operating levy with 81 percent support. Edina was the first district to capitalize on new state legislation that allowed school districts to levy for technology upgrades in 2001. That levy provided funding for hardware only. It also put Edina low on the rankings for technology funding when compared to neighboring districts. Edina received only $122 per pupil, while Hopkins received $719, Minnetonka receives $655 and Eden Prairie received $637. Edina will now collect $549 per student per year. Beginning next school year, the new technology levy will provide funding to integrate technology hardware, software, infrastructure, support and training as outlined in the district’s 2015 Technology Plan.
Planning process, changes come to Grandview District The Grandview District, an area bordered by Vernon and Eden avenues in Edina underwent both material and conceptual change in 2011. recently opened in the former pharmacy space. Construction to turn the old hardware store next door to a Walgreens is expected to begin next year. The city is also continuing a planning process for the future of the district prompted by the vacation of the city’s 3.3-acre public works facility at the corner of Eden and Arcadia avenues in 2010. The Grandview District Small Area Guide Plan process began in April 2011 and is being led by a 52-member steering committee and design consultants. Kevin Staunton, chair of the steering committee and an Edina Planning Commission member, said three intensive community workshops were held in September, October and November to start turning guiding principles selected last year into actual framework. The principles included pedestrian and tran-
sit connectivity, integrated public and private development and a unique sense of place. The group released a draft plan in December. Elements in the plan include a transportation infrastructure friendly to cars, pedestrians and bicyclists, connections between major civic centers like City Hall and the Edina Library, and a new community common. The steering committee will meet again early next year to finalize the plan and is expected to release it to the public Jan. 25. Open houses and public hearings before the planning commission and city council would take place in spring with the hope that the plan is adopted as part of the city’s comprehensive plan. “The community has a real tradition and heritage of doing innovative and creative things with redevelopment,” Staunton said. “You look at places like Southdale and Centennial Lakes and this is the next opportunity to really show something exciting, and new and innovative in Edina.”

COMMUNITY NOTES Top talent sought for Make-A-Wish benefit
viewing by some of Los Angeles’ top talent agencies.
Do you have what it takes to be a star? TalentXchange would like to hear from you. The Edina-based production company is putting together a lineup for a June 30 talent show at Edina High School to benefit Make-A-Wish-Foundation of Minnesota. Auditions are 6-9 p.m. Friday, Jan. 27, at DanceXchange, 6885 Washington Ave., Edina. Ten finalists will be selected to display their talent at the benefit while raising money for Make-A-Wish. Celebrities will be on hand to judge and perform, including “So You Think You Can Dance” contestants Jesus Solorio and Melissa Sandvig, pop singer Justin Stein, the Side Swipe martial arts dance performance crew from “America’s Got Talent,” actress and dancer Menina Fortunato and a surprise celebrity guest appearance. Talent show participants will also perform in a finale with the celebrity guests. The cost to audition is $20. To reserve an audition time, call 763-300-7199 or email talentxchange@aol.com. Staring Lake Observatory honored The Staring Lake Observatory in Eden Prairie has won an engineering award. The observatory won an “Excellence in Structural Engineering” award from the National Council of Structural Engineers Associations. There were three awards presented in
eight categories. The awards were presented during an October NCSEA conference in Oklahoma City, Okla. From an NCSEA announcement: “Staring Lake Observatory, located in Eden Prairie, Minnesota, is a truly unique public building. Unassuming by design, this 16 foot by 16 foot ‘cabin in the woods’ structure is an atypical public observatory and blends beautifully into its wooded lakeshore setting. Most telescope observatories have a track-supported sliding roof or dome-with-sliding-window through which a telescope is aimed at the sky.
Staring Lake Observatory has two rustic, wood-sided walls that swing open and a green, metal rotating roof that allows an unobstructed view of the sky, showcasing one of the largest reflecting telescopes in Minnesota.” Carolyn and Doug Kohrs of Edina and Sue and Steve Mohn of Eden Prairie donated $125,000 and $10,000, respectively to construct the observatory, so it could house the nine-foot-tall, 1,000-pound telescope donated by the Minnesota COMMUNITY: TO NEXT PAGE

everyone has a different reason for wanting to work in real estate.
Station FROM PAGE 1 “We’ve been saying no for years,” he said. “It’s a very desirable corner.” He declined to give the amount the property will be purchased for, but said the deal was a “once in a lifetime opportunity.” In early December, the Edina City Council approved rezoning and development plans for the site that will allow construction of 8,260-square-foot building slated to hold a Vitamin Shoppe store and financial office. While more expensive to employ attendants, Lindsey said the experience of running a full-service station was worth it. “I enjoy the gratification of being able to help so many people,” he said. Customers at Southdale Automotive, like Audrey Hill, said they appreciated it too. Hill, a former Edina resident now living in Breckenridge, Minn., stopped for gas while back in town for vacation. She was surprised to learn of the closing. She used to frequent the station after “fighting to fill my tank for years,” STATION: TO NEXT PAGE

Right Way Painting Solutions After one of the most brutal winters we have encountered in the past 30 years, we have all found things that need repair or replacement on our homes. Many of us have needed to put off work being done to our homes do to economic hard times. Many of us also put off projects to save money in case things got worse. Our home values have gone down which makes it hard to even think about selling our homes. The reality is that we have to keep our property in good shape to maintain our values. Painting the exterior of our homes is by far the best value to preserving our wood surfaces and windows. We can also dramatically change the appearance of the inside of our homes by updating colors. Painting woodwork is a very affordable option compared to replacing old trim around our homes. In many older homes our windows are still good, but the old stain and varnish are not holding up any more. You can save thousands of dollars by painting these windows
verses replacing windows. Updating your basement family room can also be as easy as painting the paneling. I’m Paul Moore from Rightway Painting Solutions. I’ve been in the painting business for over 20 years. Being a former Shop Teacher, I have a good background in finishing and wood replacement. We do both residential and commercial painting. We do work for several Town Home Associations, Nursing Homes and Residential Properties. We give our customers great value by being able to not just paint. We replace or repair wood, repair and reglaze older windows and reside areas that need replacement. We also repair decks and re stain decks. On the inside we repair walls, remove wallpaper, enamel wood work and paint paneling. We offer a 2 year labor warrantee on our labor, provide references and we would be happy to give you a free estimate. For all of your painting needs give us a call at 612-839-2239.

Edina boys make it 3 in a row Hornets cruise past St. Paul Central 59-49 BY JOHN SHERMAN – SUN NEWSPAPERS So far, this has been a season of streaks for the Edina High boys basketball team. After losing the first four games of the season, the Hornets have won their last three games. Edina defeated Chaska and last year’s state Class 3A champion, Orono, before scoring a 59-49 victory Dec. 20 at St. Paul Central. “We’re on the right track,” said Edina head coach Pat Dorsey following the Central game. “There was an electric atmosphere, and that’s what we expected. We got out to an early lead, 30-15, but Central went on a run early in the sec-
ond have to cut our lead to one.” After that, Edina edged ahead toward its final 10-point margin. “We shortened the game at the end,” said Dorsey. “We played disciplined basketball.” Junior guard Graham Woodward led Edina with 18 points and senior guard Philip “Flip” DeBerg added 16 points. Dane Teuteberg scored eight points while Jack McGarry and Mark Handberg scored six each. “Woodward and DeBerg have been our most consistent scorers,” said Dorsey. “We needed Flip on the floor as much as possible against St. Paul Central. He’s a good defensive player who does a lot of good things in the paint.” Marley Allison was out of action BOYS BASKETBALL: TO NEXT PAGE

Red Knights knock off Hopkins boys
Hornet girls find a way to win against WBL Bears
BY GREG KLEVEN – SUN NEWSPAPERS Benilde-St. Margaret’s High School solidified its No. 1 ranking among state Class 3A boys basketball teams with two impressive wins over Lake Conference teams. The Red Knights defeated threetime defending state Class 4A champion Hopkins 76-71 Dec. 16. BSM head coach John Moore was very pleased with the victory. “We did a good job handling their defensive pressure,” said Moore. “We passed the ball well and our players had a lot of assists. “We were tenacious defensively and outrebounded Hopkins 39-20.” Four Benilde-St. Margaret’s players scored in double figures. Sanjay Lumpkin led the Red Knights with 22 points. Isaiah Zierden scored 20. Will Dunn came through with 17 points. Isaiah Gray contributed 13 points and eight assists. Benilde-St. Margaret’s improved to 4-1 with a 71-68 victory over Minnetonka Dec. 20. “It wasn’t one of our best games, in fact it got ugly at times,” said Moore. “We might have had an emotional letdown after beating Hopkins. But we came away with a win.” The Red Knights had balanced scoring with four players in double figures – Gray (18 points), Lumpkin (18), Dunn (16) and Zierden (12).

The Red Knights trailed 26-19 at halftime before outscoring the Skippers 36-22 in the second half. Josie Dillon chipped in with nine points. Khadijah Shumpert scored eight points and Gretchen Sattler had six points. Benilde-St. Margaret’s also had a win over Totino-Grace, 55-37, Dec. 16. Coughlin led BSM scorers with 16 points. Boys basketball FROM PREVIOUS PAGE against Central with an illness, so that meant Derek Hill and McGarry had to pick up some of his minutes. “We went from an eight-man rotation to seven,” said Dorsey. “There were concerns in the second half when Graham [Woodward] picked up his fourth foul with eight minutes left.” As Edina heads into 2012, Dorsey is hoping for a favorable decision on the eligibility of Reggie Lynch, a 6-foot-9 junior who transferred to Edina from Bloomington Jefferson at the start of the school year.
Lynch’s eligibility could affect Edina’s dynamic in a big way. He is a capable shot blocker and a defensive rebounder. “Reggie has been playing well in practice,” said Dorsey. “He is getting a lot of reps.” The Hornets are playing in the Edina Classic this week in a field that also includes Armstrong, Northfield and St. Louis Park. Edina tips off the new year in a nonconference game with Mankato West at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 3, at Mankato West High. The next home game for the Hornets will be against Shakopee at 7 p.m. Friday, Jan. 6, at the Edina Community Center gym.
Even without star guard M.C. McGrory, who was sidelined with a concussion, the Edina High girls basketball team beat White Bear Lake 57-52 Dec. 20 at the Edina High gym. It was an exciting win for Edina, exciting mainly because the Bears stayed alive with a furious rally late in the second half. “We stretched our lead to 18 points at one point, but we didn’t get a lot of second chances,” said Edina head coach Matt Nilsen. The game featured a scoring duel between Katybeth Biewen of the Hornets, who finished with 21 points, and White Bear Lake’s Alexis Foley, who had 29 points. “Foley was tough,” said Nilsen. “She made five three-pointers, and on four of them we were right on her. She kept them in the game.” Biewen came through in the clutch, sinking six of eight free throws in the second half. “A lot of the time, they had two girls chasing Katybeth around,” said Nilsen. “But she showed that senior poise. Lindsey Johnson also had a good game with 10 points and 6-for-6 at the line.” McGrory was missed, of course. Her 20.7 scoring average is among the best in the metro area this season. Madeline Rodriguez picked up some of the slack, especially in defense and ball handling. Julia Good added eight points for the Hornets and her sister Shannon added six points. “We also got good play from Hailey Merrill and Haley Neve,” said Nilsen. “Our level of play didn’t drop when they came in off the bench.” The Dec. 20 win gave Edina a season record of 8-0.

Lake Conference schools dominate state sports landscape Judging by the fall sports season, Lake Conference high schools are clearly Minnesota’s elite. Of the eight major fall sports titles, Lake schools won six. Eden Prairie led the way with championships in football, girls volleyball and boys soccer. Wayzata claimed girls soccer and Edina took girls tennis and girls swimming. Edina’s athletes were brilliant throughout the fall tennis and swimming seasons. Caroline Ward and Meghana Vasireddy formed a potent 1-2 singles punch while Morgan Marinovich, Maddie Boyer and Katie Reger also excelled for the tennis team. Nikki Larson of the Hornet swim team capped her championship season with four gold medals at state.
Recipe for success Lake teams are winning for several reasons. I will list them in order of importance. • Large enrollments give coaches a large number of athletes to choose from in every sport. • Facilities in the Lake are second to none. Eden Prairie’s campus might have more artificial turf than natural grass. • Every Lake school has current and future hall-of-fame coaches. Where else
JOHN SHERMAN Edina Sports Editor could you find a group of coaches to equal the Lake’s head football coaches? You have Mike Grant at Eden Prairie with six state titles and Brad Anderson at Wayzata with three state titles. Minnetonka’s Dave Nelson has two state championships, one at Tonka and one at Blaine. John DenHartog at Hopkins and Reed Boltmann at Edina are coaches on the rise. • The Lake athletic directors – Grant (Eden Prairie), John Soma (Edina), Dan Johnson (Hopkins), Ted Schultz (Minnetonka) and Jaime Sherwood (Wayzata) – would all be highly successful CEO’s in the private sector.
Winter wonderland? Following a successful fall season, Lake schools have a chance at winter state titles. The state-champion Hopkins High boys basketball team is shooting for four in a row this winter. Coach Kenny Novak Sr. has a squad loaded with athletes, including returning starters Siyani Chambers,
Demetrius Martin and Zach Stahl. Hopkins has plenty of competition from other state-ranked teams in the Lake. Eden Prairie is ranked fourth while Wayzata is seventh and Minnetonka is ninth. Hopkins is ranked No. 1 in the Associated Press state girls basketball poll. Coach Brian Cosgriff has the Royals running and scoring with the Coffey sisters (Sydney and Nia), Gracia Hutson, Taylor Anderson and Mikaala Shackelford leading the way. All five girls basketball teams in the Lake Conference are ranked among the top seven in state by Associated Press. The rankings show Edina at No. 2, Minnetonka at No. 3, Wayzata at No. 6 and Eden Prairie at No. 7. Edina has the best guard combo in the state with senior Katybeth Biewen and junior M.C. McGrory. Minnetonka has its own premier guard, Joanna Hedstrom. Wayzata’s lineup includes Division I signees Marissa Grossfeld and Kayla Timmerman. Eden Prairie’s leaders are future Minnesota Gophers Jackie Johnson and Shayne Mullaney.
Hockey outlook Two Lake teams, Edina and Minnetonka, are ranked fourth and fifth,
respectively, in Let’s Play Hockey Magazine’s state Class AA poll. Edina’s goalie, senior Maddie Dahl, might be the best in the state and Hornet defensemen Ali Austin and Megan Armstrong are in the same category. The Hornets have scoring, too, with Liz Trautz, Sarah Nielsen and Taylor Williamson leading the attack. Minnetonka forwards Laura Bowman and Amy Petersen have been skating on the same line for years and have established chemistry with their new linemate, Diana Draayer. In boys hockey, all five Lake teams have impact players. Some of the players to watch are Nick Leer, Louie Nanne and Parker Reno of Edina, Erik Baskin, Max Coatta, Michael Prochno and Vinni Littieri of Minnetonka, Miles Death, Kenzie Vold, Matt Halverson and Sam Majka of Wayzata, Joey Brettingen, Tanner Holmquist and Andy Wicklund of Hopkins. After four weeks of high school hockey action, Minnetonka is ranked second in the state behind Duluth East in Let’s Play Hockey’s poll. Eden Prairie is ranked eighth and Edina is ranked ninth.
