Edina City Council agrees to look at funding options BY KATIE MINTZ – SUN NEWSPAPERS Edina is inching closer to opening its pocketbook for Southdale Center. A majority of city council members indicated Tuesday, Nov. 29, at a work session that they would support providing some form of financial assistance to spur renovation at the 55-year-old mall. But the potential method of payment – whether grant, loan or otherwise – remains unclear. Representatives from Southdale and owner Simon Property Group Inc. appeared at the meeting to discuss a request for $5.38 million in grant funds from the city for a makeover of the nation’s first indoor regional shopping center. According to City Manager Scott Neal, Simon is seeking a city decision ahead of an upcoming internal meeting

Council considers adding to existing municipal parking BY KATIE MINTZ – SUN NEWSPAPERS Above, Edina 4-year-old Gavin Wedum, left, and 1-year-old brother Nolan Wedum, right, recite their wish lists for Santa Claus at the city’s first Santa’s Breakfast at the Peak Saturday morning, Dec. 3, at Edinborough Park. Big sister Emerson Wedum, 5, not pictured, joined them. Recreation Supervisor Kristen Aarsvold said the event, which included a continental breakfast, was a relaxed alternative to long lines to meet Santa at the mall. At right, Eli Pietig, 5, of Bloomington gives Santa Claus’ beard a tug Saturday morning, Dec. 3, at Santa’s Breakfast at the Peak at Edinborough Park in Edina. Eli said he asked Santa for a “truck with motorcycles on it,” and a Nintendo DSi XL video game system.

Shoppers could see more parking at 50th Street and France Avenue by next holiday season. The city of Edina is planning to expand two municipal parking ramps in the area with support from property owners. The Edina City Council discussed improvements for the commercial hub during a work session meeting Tuesday, Nov. 29. The council directed staff to prepare a detailed feasibility proposal for its meeting Tuesday, Dec. 20. If approved later this winter, construction would take place in summer 2012 and 2013. Edina police officers bring home the bacon City nabs $1M in revenue from courts BY KATIE MINTZ – SUN NEWSPAPERS Edina remains tops in citations, based on a report from Hennepin County District Court. The court recently released details about its disbursement of fines paid to the court for criminal, traffic, parking and local ordinance violations, surcharges, court fees and forfeited or unclaimed bail back to originating jurisdictions. According to a court document, for fiscal year 2011, Edina received $1.13 million – the most of any city in Hennepin County except Minneapolis, which received $9.21 million. Third behind Edina, receiving $1.12 million was Bloomington, which has approximately 35,000 more residents than Edina, based on 2010 U.S. Census figures. Minnetonka, which has about 2,000 more residents than Edina, received just over half the amount at $588,949. Edina Police Chief Jeff Long explained that officers in Edina write more citations than most agencies in Hennepin County. The city is fortunate to be able to focus on traffic enforcement, which helps keep streets safe and city expenses down, he said. “Some cities have drug or prostitution issues or other issues that really take up their time and attention,” Long said. “Fortunately, for us with a lower crime rate we get into neighborhoods for traffic stops.” While the city budgets to receive about $950,000 to $1.2 million in court disbursements each year, he said officers do not have quotas to meet – a common misconception. He said he hears complaints that Edina officers are overly aggressive and stop anyone driving 5 miles per hour over the limit, but that is not the case. He said there is a legitimate need for enforcement.

Visit www.minnlocal.com for extended news and advertising

“It’s not a perceived issue. This is a real issue,” Long said. In October of this year, Edina officers issued 912 speeding citations alone. On local streets, tickets went to drivers going 9 mph to 25 mph over the speed limit, with an average of 16 mph over the limit. On highways, tickets went to drivers going 13 mph to 36 mph over the limit, for an average of 17 mph. In February 2011, Long said a person was ticketed for going 72 mph on West 66th Street, where the speed limit is 30. The driver was attempting to catch a school bus that his or her children had missed, Long said. “We have about 34 officers out writing citations and if they can write over 20,000 citations a year at these averages, somebody is being aggressive and it’s not the police department. It’s the drivers,” Long said. Long, however, said he does credit officers, including three full-time traffic

Edina officer inspires bone marrow registry event Sgt. Steve Stroh is fighting multiple myeloma with bone marrow donation BY KATIE MINTZ – SUN NEWSPAPERS The Edina Police Department is asking community members to open their mouths and roll up their sleeves to help others in need. The department will host a bone marrow registry and blood drive 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 14, at City Hall, 4801 W. 50th St., in Edina. The event is being held in the name of Edina Sgt. Steve Stroh, who is battling multiple myeloma, a cancer of the plasma cells in bone marrow. Normally, plasma cells help the body fight infection by producing antibodies. In multiple myeloma, plasma cells grow out of control and form tumors in the bone, making it hard for the bone marrow to produce healthy blood cells. KAREL SMITH 612-986-3704

Stroh was diagnosed with multiple myeloma in 2008, and received a stem cell transplant that year, but has relapsed twice since then. In September, he underwent an allogeneic bone marrow transplant with cells donated by his brother. According to the National Marrow Donor Program, which operates the Be The Match registry, only 30 percent of patients find a match in their family like Stroh. Everyone else depends on the registry. Molly Anderson, public information officer for Edina, said Stroh, who has served Edina for 24 years, inspired the department to partner with Be The Match. “He’s held many different positions throughout the department and is a significant part of our department,” she said. “That’s why we want to do whatever we can to help. This marrow registry helps lots of people.” Stroh will be at a doctor’s appointment in Rochester during the event, but encouraged community members to join the registry.

Diabetes diagnoses doesn’t deter Edina runner Janet Chen running Boston Marathon to support diabetes research BY JANET CHEN – GUEST COLUMNIST Early last year I was packing clothes for a warm weather trip and noticed everything seemed about two sizes too big. On the scale at my annual doctor’s appointment, my weight had dropped nearly 10 pounds. The next day my doctor called with results from routine blood work consistent with a diagnosis of late-onset type 1 diabetes. Long known as juvenile diabetes, type 1 diabetes most often begins in childhood though the condition sometimes develops in adults. I was diagnosed with latent autoimmune diabetes in adults (LADA), sometimes called type 1.5 diabetes, in which the immune system destroys beta cells in the pancreas – cells that produce insulin. Without enough insulin, blood sugar levels can become too high, resulting in nerve damage, blindness and other problems if untreated. Type 1 diabetes and LADA are incurable and demand near-constant attention to blood sugar levels and treatment with insulin to keep them normal. Because LADA appears in adulthood, usually after age 30, it may be initially mistaken for type 2 diabetes, which was the case with me. In type 2 diabetes, which can develop at any age, the pancreas produces an adequate supply of insulin, but body tissues become resistant to its effects, often

Janet Chen of Edina, right, and sister Gail Lederman, left, cross the finish line at the ING New York City Marathon Sunday, Nov. 6. Chen will also run the Boston Marathon in April to raise money for Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation. (Submitted photo) because of excess weight or obesity. Weight loss often reverses the condition. With nearly 26 million children and adults in America living with diabetes, and another 79 million at high risk for developing type 2 diabetes, the disease is taking a devastating physical, emotional and financial toll on our country. Recent numbers by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention paint a desperate situation of

where we are at, and where we are headed: – Every 17 seconds, someone is diagnosed with diabetes. – Recent estimates project that as many as one in three American adults will have diabetes in 2050. – Studies suggest that when additional costs for gestational diabetes, pre-diabetes and undiagnosed diabetes are included, the total diabetes-related costs in the U.S. could exceed $218 billion. With my medical background I knew that I didn’t have type 2 diabetes. I ate right, exercised and did not have a family history of type 2 diabetes. I saw an endocrinologist who told me that I had LADA and should start insulin. Within a week I was learning how to test my blood sugar, inject insulin and count carbohydrates. The diagnosis of diabetes has been life changing to say the least, but has not deterred me from my passion of running marathons and my job as a neonatal nurse practitioner at Children’s Hospitals and Clinics of Minnesota. I ran in the Medtronic Twin Cities Marathon and the ING New York City Marathon last month while managing my diabetes and plan on running the 2012 Boston Marathon this April. This marathon will be special for me because I grew up in the Boston area and always watched the marathon as a kid, but what will really make it a special race for me is that I will be running to raise money for Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation. For more information on my effort, visit jdrf.org/teamjdrfbostonmarathon and type in Janet Chen in the “participant/team” search box.

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR MacHolda made a difference in Edina To the editor: I’d like to express my appreciation for Ed MacHolda, Edina’s outgoing assistant park and recreation director. As a 2001 Edina graduate and former Edina Aquatic Center employee, Ed served as my

supervisor through high school and college. Not only did he grow up across the street from the pool, he has worked for the city for 26 years, making his recent departure a true loss for Edina. Rather than simply being a boss to the kids who worked at the pool over the years, Ed served as a mentor and coach. He taught us about hard work,

customer service and teamwork. He reveled in nurturing our individual skills and allowing us the chance to display them. During my most formative years, Ed offered me the gift of responsibility and faith in my talents. I garnered more realworld know-how managing the pool than I have in any job since.

Most impressive, Ed cared about us long after we moved on to the subsequent stages of life. He wrote letters of recommendation, helped secure job interviews, and was always available to give advice. While his attention paid to the Edina Aquatic Center facility is perhaps most obvious, it is his LETTERS: TO NEXT PAGE

Society members come from all social, religious, and economic backgrounds, finding unity in their mutual attraction of the simplicity of the cremation rite. They choose to dispense with costly and unnecessary pomp associated with conventional funerals, and commit themselves and their families to this dignified disposition at the time of death.

Q. How does the Cremation Society of Minnesota Work? A. The Cremation Society is notified immediately at the time of death. Then the member’s body is transported to the Society’s crematory where it is held until proper medical authorization is secured. The cremation permit is then completed, and the body is cremated.

Edina receives award for excellence in financial reporting

Miller promoted to general manager at Braemar Arena

Edina recently received a Certificate of Achievement for Excellence in Financial Reporting from the Government Finance Officers Association of the United States. The certificate is the highest form of recognition in the area of governmental accounting and financial reporting, and was awarded to the city for its comprehensive annual financial report. The report for the 2010 fiscal year was reviewed by an impartial panel of financial statement preparers, independent auditors, academics and other finance professionals and deemed to meet the high standards of the program, including demonstrating a constructive “spirit of full disclosure” to clearly communicate the city’s financial story. This is the fifth consecutive year the Edina Finance Department has received the recognition. Annually, approximately 100 Minnesota municipalities receive the award. To view the annual financial report and other budget documents, visit cityofedina.com/finance.

Susie Miller became general manager of Braemar Arena for the city of Edina in October. Miller was formerly assistant park manager at Edinborough Park. As general manager, Miller will be responsible for marketing, scheduling ice time and events, working with Edina’s hockey teams and associations, helping the public and supervising the arena’s staff. Miller began work for the city as a recreation supervisor in 1998 until she was promoted as Edinborough Park’s assistant manager in 2007, after receiving a master’s degree in recreation administration. She also holds a bachelor’s degree in recreation, parks and leisure services. At Edinborough, she said she fell in love with running a business. At Braemar Arena, which already provides ice time to teams, offers private figure skating lessons and open skating time, she said she hopes to add more city-run programs, like co-recreational fun leagues and camps. She said adult open hockey opportunities for both men and women would launch soon.

Study: Prescription drug abuse on rise for county arrestees t o Prescription drug abuse is on the rise nationwide. A 2011 study shows that 5.6 percent of men 21 years old and younger who were booked into Hennepin County jail had the painkiller medication Oxycodone in their system, the sheriff’s office reported.

BY PAUL GROESSEL – SUN NEWSPAPERS A 2011 study shows more than half of adult males booked into Hennepin County Jail tested positive for illegal drug use, according to the county sheriff. The Arrestee Drug Abuse Monitoring Program (ADAM II) found that 68 percent of men booked into the county jail had taken at least one illegal drug prior to their arrest, according to the sheriff ’s office. The federal Office of National Drug Control Policy generates the study, but an office spokesman said it has not made preliminary 2011 results public, so it could not verify the specific numbers the sheriff ’s office has already released. The most popular drug among those entering jail was marijuana, with 53 percent of arrestees having the drug in their system, the sheriff ’s office reported. Even though 1.5 percent of all arrestees had Oxycodone in their system, it’s most prevalent among the youngest in jail. Of men 21 years old and younger booked into jail, 5.6 percent had the painkiller medication Oxycodone in their system prior to arrest, the sheriff ’s office reported. The use of heroin and Oxycodone is on the rise among young arrestees, according to Hennepin County Sheriff Rich Stanek,

Policy spokesman Rafael Lemaitre did say prescription drug abuse is on the rise in the United States. It’s becoming an epidemic, he said, “and that’s not a phrase we use lightly here.” Of the 28,000 drug-related deaths per year, many of them are from prescription drug abuse, and 70 percent of abusers get the drugs from friends and family, Lemaitre said. That’s why federal authorities sponsored 4,000 “take-back” days across the country in October, where people can turn leftover prescription drugs to authorities, Lemaitre said. A new law that will allow local authorities and groups to run their own take-back programs is also expected to begin soon.

ADAM II survey methods while cocaine and methamphetamine use has declined. Young men have also had the biggest shift in drug use among all age groups. In the 2010 study, 3 percent of those 21 and younger had Oxycodone in their system, according to federal survey results. With the increase in prescription drug abuse has come a decrease in the use of cocaine and methamphetamine, according

the sheriff. The sheriff ’s office claims none of the youngest men in jail had either drug in their system, according to the 2011 preliminary results. A 2010 study found that 3.6 percent of those under 21 had cocaine in their system and 1.8 percent had taken methamphetamine prior to their arrest. Even though he could not speak to specific 2011 results, National Drug Control

For years the federal government has contracted ABT Associates to conduct the drug study. It began by surveying people booked into jails in 35 cities and metropolitan areas across the country. Working under the Office of National Drug Control Policy since 2006, 10 cities are canvassed with the drug study, according to Dana DRUGS: TO NEXT PAGE

Drugs FROM PREVIOUS PAGE Hunt, who has overseen the study for ABT since 2000. The federal government won’t release final numbers until February because the preliminary numbers are based on two quarters of the year, she said, and final numbers are calculated to represent the entire year. Tests take place within 48 hours of an arrest, since some drugs can leave the body after two days. So, surveys take place while men are being processed or shortly after

they’re placed in jail, Hunt said. Men’s identities remain anonymous; their information is replaced with a barcode number on drug test samples and interview responses. Arrestees are asked about use of specific drugs, how they obtained them and other questions. Then they take a drug test to confirm what narcotics are in their system, Hunt said. A lot of men say they are happy to be interviewed and take part in the study, Hunt said. “Why everybody always says that is – because they’re bored.” Processing can take hours, and there isn’t a lot to do. Plus, surveyors have candy bars.

Countrywide, nearly 90 percent agree to participate, Hunt said. But, that doesn’t mean they tell the truth about their drug use. Even though drug-use patterns vary region to region, the admission of drug use is about the same for all regions tested, Hunt said. And, consistently, the more taboo a drug, the more people lie about using it. “[Responses are] quite different by drug, but almost the same everywhere,” Hunt said. Approximately 85 percent of people who tested positive for marijuana admitted to using it in the previous 30 days, while approximately 40 percent of recent cocaine

15

and heroine users confessed. Timelines also play into a willingness to admit drug abuse. Respondents are more likely to admit to abusing a drug within a year, but not days. “It’s hard to admit that you used heroine three days ago. It’s hard to admit you used cocaine three days ago. … There’s a wide range of shame associated with the drug use. Or unwillingness to say they did it,” Hunt said. The sheriff ’s office and Lemaitre said results from the studies serve as one component of the multiple resources used to create prevention efforts, policy and enforcement strategy. Full 2011 results are expected in February.

that will pit Southdale against other properties for company resources. Mall Manager Laurie Van Dalen said Simon is prepared to match a city grant with close to $10 million. That would provide for improvements from the parking lot to the main concourse, including new outdoor signage, new mall entrances, porcelain flooring and decorative wood features. The work would be on top of $20 million Simon has already committed to improvements at the recently opened Herberger’s, and realignment of a mall concourse, relocation of the food court and one new mall entrance with play area. Construction on those projects is slated to begin Jan. 2. Without the city’s partnership, the company would complete a baseline project, basically a new coat of paint, Van Dalen said. “There’s a definite difference between the baseline renovation and the premiere renovation that we want to do,” she said. Council members directed staff to return to a Tuesday, Dec. 6, work session with options that could include a mix of grant and loan dollars through tax increment financing. The council could also discuss forming a development agreement team to continue negotiations with Simon in closed meetings. Results of the meeting were unavailable at press time. Tax increment financing uses the increased property tax revenue generated by real estate development to help pay for costs associated with the improvements. The city’s policy on tax increment financing, adopted in April, states that assistance should be made in a pay-asyou-go format, but can be offered upfront at council discretion. In pay-asyou-go, the developer makes the initial investment and the city only pays back the new increased portion of property taxes as they’re generated. Bill Hammer, vice president of development for the Indianapolis-based company, said Simon is seeking a grant because the cosmetic work is not expected to generate a substantial amount of new assessed value, as an addition might. But he said there would be benefits from the work. The company believes the renovation would bring Southdale

Center from a current occupancy rate of 81 percent to 91 percent, add jobs and make the surrounding area more attractive to other businesses. Edina Mayor Jim Hovland, who earlier this year indicated he would not favor use of public funds for the private property, said he is now closer to helping Southdale. “When we first started talking about this I had the toughest time seeing where there was a return on public investment for us giving $5.3 million to help you remodel your mall,” he said. Now he said he wants a way to show Simon has earned the funding that he can explain to taxpayers. Council members Josh Sprague and Mary Brindle indicated support for providing up-front funding. Sprague gave an example of how he’d justify the decision to taxpayers. “I’d say we’re competing for dollars. We couldn’t afford not to be on the top of the list for transformational properties to leverage all of this money,” Sprague said. “It has to start with something and that something is why they’re here – to catalyze the money necessary at the bottom of a recession at a retail property of this size,” he said. Councilmember Ann Swenson said she remains in the middle, but does see public purpose in community gathering space Southdale provides. She said she is more interested in a combination involving a loan, rather than grant funding only. “I think what they’re doing is important. … We don’t want a hole that continues to suck down in the middle of our community,” Swenson said. Councilmember Joni Bennett remains opposed to providing any public support. She questioned why the city is being asked to help when Simon does projects in other communities without taxpayer assistance. She said it would be an unprecedented move for the city to provide such assistance. “I have wrestled with this ... but I can’t find a public purpose,” Bennett said. Hammer said Southdale Center is in an unusual position for Simon. When it took ownership in 2007, Southdale had changed hands several times in recent years. “This property, because of a whole lot of reasons, didn’t receive the care and handling that it probably needed, and so we ended with a situation where there’s a lot further to go,” Hammer said.

Fire report The Edina Fire Department responded to the following incidents Nov. 21-27: Nov. 21 – Paramedic firefighters responded to four calls for emergency medical service. Firefighters investigated a carbon monoxide alarm malfunction. One false fire alarm was reported. Nov. 22 – A vehicle fire was reported in the parking lot of a restaurant on the 3200 block of Southdale Circle. The fire was out when firefighters arrived. Recent damage to the fuse box was the likely cause of the electrical short and fire. Firefighters extinguished a fire in a construction dumpster on the 4300 block of Crocker Avenue. The cause of the fire was not determined. A natural gas leak was investigated at a restaurant in the

Galleria. Firefighters detected a slight odor but there was not enough to register a reading on the gas monitor. The gas company responded to investigate. A report of a gas odor was investigated on the 5900 block of Dewey Hill Road. No combustible gas was detected using gas monitors. A sewer gas smell was noted in basement near the main drain. The homeowner was advised to put water in the trap drain to help the smell dissipate. There were 11 EMS responses. Nov. 23 – Firefighters investigated a carbon monoxide alarm on the 5800 block of Saint Johns Avenue. Levels of carbon monoxide were measured in the home and suspected to be from using a gas stove and oven for hours without a ventilation fan or fresh air exchange. There were five EMS incidents and three false fire alarms. Nov. 24 – There were nine EMS responses and two false fire alarms. Nov. 25 – Paramedics and an engine crew responded to a vehi-

cle crash on Highway 62 at Tracy Avenue. There were 13 EMS incidents and one false fire alarm. Nov. 26 – A smoke alarm alerted residents to a fire at a home on the 6400 block of Josephine Avenue. A dry chemical fire extinguisher was discharged and the family evacuated safely before calling 911. Firefighters arrived and extinguished the remaining smoldering fire, which appeared to be caused by clothing on the floor too close to the water heater. Fire damage was isolated to the items on the floor and to the water heater. Smoke was ventilated from the home. Firefighters investigated a report of an electrical smell in a home on the 5400 block of Mirror Lakes Drive. A florescent bulb in a lamp had malfunctioned, charring and melting the aluminum around the base of the bulb. There were 13 EMS responses and two false fire alarms. Nov. 27 – There were 10 EMS incidents and one false fire alarm.

Edina’s newest fire engine arrives A new fire truck recently became part of the Edina Fire Department’s fleet. The new truck replaces the old Engine 82, which was purchased in 1986. “The old truck was no longer efficient given the advances in firefighting technology,” Edina Fire Chief Marty Scheerer said. He noted that the 1986 engine was equipped with manual levers and pressure and volume controls. The new engine is electronic. The new engine, also called Engine 82, holds 750 gallons of water, compared to 500 gallons in the 1986 engine. It also features a firefighting foam tank and portioning system, something the old engine did not have. “The new rig holds 250 additional gallons of water compared to the old one,” Scheerer said. “In the event of a fire, the extra water will add a few very

valuable minutes for our firefighters.” A tighter turning radius, better braking, greater access to rescue equipment, better emergency lighting, improved crash safety and better fuel efficiency are additional features of the new truck, he said. Since Edina’s firefighters are also trained paramedics, the new fire truck also offers interior EMS storage space that keeps medications and equipment at proper temperatures. The new truck arrived at Edina Fire Department’s Station No. 1 in mid-November and was expected to be in service in early December. The custom-built truck cost approximately $400,000, which is below the average price of a new fire truck. The last time the Fire Department purchased a new fire truck was in 2005 when Engine 83 was bought.

Right Way Painting Solutions Another summer has come and gone with winter here for the next several months. Many of us have been forced to put off inside projects for various reasons including economic hard times. Many of us have put off projects to save money in case things get worse. Based on the unemployment numbers, Minnesota’s unemployment is much lower than most states and has continued to improve over the last year. Many of us are in situations where our home value has decreased and it is hard to even think about selling our homes. Winter is a great time to do inside projects! Painting is one of the most cost effective ways to enhance the beauty of our homes. Painting the walls, ceilings and trim can dramatically change the appearance of our homes. Today’s paints do not leave odors that are unappealing. The best reason to paint in the winter is we are not as busy as we are spring, summer and fall. This gives you the opportunity to take advantage of our better pricing. I live in Richfield and many of the homes in the Richfield, Bloomington and Edina

areas are getting older and the wood work, windows and paneling are not in the best of shape. We can make these areas of your home look new with either painting or refinishing. Painting or refinishing these areas is much more cost effective than replacing windows or wood work. I’m Paul Moore, the owner of Right Way Painting Solutions. I’ve been painting homes for over 20 years. Being a former Shop Teacher, I have a great background in painting, finishing and wood replacement and repair. We do work for several townhome associations, Nursing Homes and residential properties in the Richfield, Bloomington and Edina areas. We remove wallpaper, replace trim, paint windows, woodwork, walls, ceilings, kitchen cabinets, paneling and cement floors. We give our customers great value with being able to do more than just painting. We offer a two year warrantee on our labor. We supply references and we would be happy to give you a free estimate. Please give us a call at 612-839-2239.

Parking FROM PAGE 1 Councilmember Mary Brindle said retail stores and restaurants at 50th and France are popular now, but in a precarious position. “Thankfully we have an area that is very desirable. Now, that can change if we say I can never find a place to park there,” she said. “None of us want 50th and France to be mortally wounded by its own charm,” Mayor Jim Hovland said. The city has been working with property owners in the 50th Street and France Avenue Business District to address parking issues for the last few years, Public Works Director Wayne Houle said. It updated a 2008 parking study last spring and found a statistical need for approximately 200 additional spaces to meet current demand. There are now about 1,350 parking spaces in the area, including three city ramps, private and public surface lots. “There is a shortage of parking down

sary, but he would prefer some portion of the assessment be spread over a broader base than the 50th Street and France Avenue Business District. Hovland noted the inequity in Edina merchants on the west side of France Avenue paying for a project that merchants on the east side in Minneapolis would also benefit from. City Manager Scott Neal said he met with Minneapolis staff about creating a bilateral maintenance district but was not successful. Council members indicated that they would support the proposal with two added levels at the middle ramp and addition at the south ramp if the detailed feasibility proposal finds they are within the $8.5 million budget. The council also directed staff to research financing options that would allow for a low interest rate to help keep costs down. A public hearing for the project is tentatively set in February. If the project, which will require height and setback variances, is approved, construction on the middle ramp would begin this spring after the Edina Art Fair and be completed by next holiday season. Construction on the south ramp would begin in spring 2013.

Edina has to wait for Lynch Coach Dorsey looks for MSHSL’s approval BY JOHN SHERMAN – SUN NEWSPAPERS Edina High boys basketball coach Pat Dorsey expected to have 6-foot-9 Jefferson transfer Reggie Lynch in the lineup for the season opener against Lakeville North, but that didn’t happen. Dorsey said he is optimistic the Minnesota State High School League will render a favorable ruling on Lynch’s eligibility this week. The MSHSL will have to decide if the Lynch situation meets the criteria for immediate varsity eligibility at the student’s new school. “It was my impression this fall that Reggie would be eligible,” said Dorsey. “Now, it might just be a matter of crossing the t’s and dotting the i’s. I am pretty confident it will work out.” Lynch, one of the most prominent

AAU players in the state, would certainly make a difference for Edina. Without Lynch, the Hornets got 24 fewer rebounds than Lakeville North in a 63-49 season-opening loss Dec. 3 at Edina Community Center. Lacking the post present they would have had with Lynch, the Hornets went to Plan B, which entailed shooting 18 three-pointers. By making only three of them, they gave Lakeville North’s big men a chance to haul in some soft rebounds. “It was a mental blow when we found out Reggie wouldn’t be playing,” said Dorsey. As for the Hornets’ cold shooting, Dorsey said the shots they took weren’t bad shots. “Our shooting had a lot to do with Lakeville North’s defense,” said Dorsey. “Shooting is infectious – both making them and missing them. M.C. McGrory McGrory, a junior guard for the Edina High girls basketball team, scored 26 points Dec. 2 as the Hornets rolled to a 62-34 non-conference win over Rochester Mayo.

Lynch FROM PREVIOUS PAGE knocked down a few more outside shots, it could have been a different game.” The Hornets kept the score close in the first half, but in the second half Lakeville North opened a doubledigit lead. “I thought it was a great ballgame at halftime,” said Dorsey. “Both teams were making plays.” Mark Handberg, Edina’s 6-foot-4 junior forward, would have helped the rebounding cause, but he was on the bench with foul trouble most of the game and played fewer than 10 minutes. “Mark had three fouls right away in the first half, and then when he went back in, he got another quick foul,” said Dorsey. “It was kind of a short night for him. Mark is one of our better rebounders.” Junior guard Graham Woodward led Edina with 14 points while junior forward Nick Boone added 11 points. “If there was a silver lining to this game, it was Nick Boone’s individual effort,” said Dorsey. “He was 5-for-6 from the field. Nick has a little bit of an edge to him, and he plays hard. “Dane Tueteberg is another player who had a nice game. He’s a gogetter who is going to provide some depth.” In the opener, Dorsey started Boone, Handberg, Woodward, Philip DeBerg and Marley Allison. Woodward and DeBerg were AllLake Conference selections last season. Another returning starter from last year’s team, guard C.J. Johnson, suffered a knee injury early in the football season and will be out for the entire basketball season. “That’s a major loss,” said Dorsey. “C.J. was a high-spirited leader on the floor, the kind of leader who holds everyone accountable. He also took a lot of charges. We have to find out if we can replace some of that.” Next for the Hornets is a non-conference game with the Park Center Pirates at 7 p.m. Friday, Dec. 9, at Park Center High School in Brooklyn Park. The Hornets will continue their non-conference schedule when they return home for a 7 p.m. game with Woodbury Tuesday, Dec. 13, at Edina Community Center.

Edina High girls basketball comes out of the gate quickly Nilsen’s Hornets cruise to three straight wins BY JOHN SHERMAN – SUN NEWSPAPERS Edina High girls basketball coach Matt Nilsen might have one of the best backcourts in the state this season. It is certainly one of the more experienced backcourts with senior Katybeth Biewen, a fourth-year starter, and M.C. McGrory, a third-year starter. Both girls were All-Lake Conference last season, and they’ve played like that again this year in leading the Hornets to a 3-0 record. In games last week, the Hornets blitzed Stillwater 70-32 and Rochester Mayo 62-34. McGrory was the dominant player both nights, scoring 25 points against Stillwater and 26 against Mayo. “We did a good job of getting to the freethrow line against Stillwater,” said Edina head coach Matt Nilsen. “M.C. was 10-for13 and Katybeth was 9-for-12. One of our goals for the season is to make more free throws than the other team attempts.” Biewen scored 13 points against the Ponies while Madeline Rodriguez and

Lindsey Johnson each had eight points. Nine players scored in the Hornets’ win over Rochester Mayo Dec. 2 at the Edina High gym. In addition to McGrory’s 26, the Hornets got eight points from Biewen, seven from Julia Good and six from Rodriguez. “M.C. had an outstanding all-around game with eight rebounds and three steals,” Nilsen said. “She showed her ability to get to the basket and also hit three three-point shots. The good thing is she scored 26 points without forcing any shots. “Mayo gave us a good battle in the first half and we had to work hard for our sixpoint halftime lead. It was a good game at both ends of the floor.” The pendulum swung Edina’s way in the second half when the Hornets generated more of a running game. “Mayo zoned us the entire game, and it was good to see we could deal with that,” said Nilsen. The Hornets have been starting Biewen, Julia Good, Johnson, McGrory and Rodriguez early in the season. BASKETBALL: TO NEXT PAGE

Freshman wing Dylan Malmquist is one of many new faces on the Edina High boys hockey team this winter, and he is already becoming a fan favorite. Malmquist scored two goals Dec. 3 as the Hornets won a non-conference game with the Lakeville South Cougars 5-1 at Lakeville’s Hasse Arena. After losing star forwards Steven Fogarty and Michael Sit to graduation, Hornet head coach Curt Giles is looking for new sources of scoring, and he thinks he has found one in Malmquist. “Dylan has very good skills and knows the game extremely well,” Giles said. “The challenge for him is the same as it is for any freshman – how will he hold up mentally and physically?” Junior Tim Spicoli and sophomores Henry Rose and Connor Hurley also had goals for Edina in the Lakeville South game. Junior goalie Willy Benjamin was strong at the other end of the rink with 25 saves. “Willy made some big stops,” said Giles. “He was very sharp. Willy is a big kid who covers a lot of the net.” Giles used the Lakeville South game as a proving ground for the Hornets’ depth. “We rolled four lines and six defensemen,” he said. Giles said he has been pleased with the leadership of junior captain Parker Reno on defense. The other defensemen in the rotation are juniors Hayden Anderson, Ryan Hatch and Matt Nelson, sophomore Tyler Nanne and freshman Jack Walker. “They’re starting to understand the expectations, and they are moving the puck well,” said Giles. “Parker is an extremely good leader.” Edina is 3-1 in its first four games. “I hope the kids will continue to improve,” said Giles. “It is a good bunch to work with. All of them are good listeners who are eager to learn.”

By: Ali Holman, co-owner of www.coreconditioningtraining.com I think we can all agree that eating is fun. Not only is it a way for us to socialize, reward ourselves and comfort ourselves, it also is the one area of fitness where people have the most trouble. Wouldn’t it be great to know that the choices you make are actually helping your fitness program? More importantly, wouldn’t it be even better to banish the word “diet” from your vocabulary? Chances are, if you are embarking on a “diet”, it will have a beginning and an end. The end is usually followed by slowly going back to old habits and ends you right back where you started. With our clients, we really encourage them to focus on a Lifestyle Change with room for “cheat meals” and realistic goals; which inevitably lead to lifelong results and without the emotional roller coaster of a diet.

Core/Conditioning Training’s List of “Fat Burning Foods”

eggs

low-fat dairy

Eggs are high in protein and low in calories. You may have heard all the warnings about eggs and your health: opt for eggwhites for the low-cholesterol, fatburning effect. Eggs also contain the vitamin B-12, a great supplement for breaking down fat cells.

Studies show that women who eat low-fat dairy products (such as non-fat yogurt and low-fat milk) three to four times a day lost 70 percent more fat than low-dairy dieters.

beans

oatmeal

Beans are one of the best sources of protein, fiber and iron. Some of the best beans to ear are: • Navy Beans • White Beans • Kidney Beans • Lima Beans

Oatmeal is loaded with soluble fiber, which helps reduce blood cholesterol by flushing those bad digestive acids out of your system. Skip the flavored oatmeals - you lose out on all the health benefits. If you must sweeten your oatmeal, do so by adding fruit.

olive oil

lean meats

Certain fats are good for you, and your body needs them. Olive oil is one of those “good fats.” It helps you burn fat and keeps your cholesterol down. One ounce of extra virgin olive oil contains about 85% of the daily value for monosaturated fat.

Search for lean meats - chicken (baked, broiled, grilled), fish and turkey - which are all high in protein. It is a good rule of thumb to consume at least one half-gram protein per pound of body weight each day. A chicken breast gets you well on your way, with about 22 grams of protein.

whole grains

interval training

Our body needs carbohydrates, despite what the fad diets tell you. Avoid processed carbohydrates such as white breads, bagles, pastas and white rice and look for whole grains that have not been processed and contain the fiber and minerals your body needs.

Interval training is defined as short, repeated bouts of intense exercise with minimal rest. You can burn major calories and get an all-over workout in less than 30 minutes. When you see people who are “cut,” chances ar they are partaking in interval training.
