Ralph’s Shoe Service is back in business Cities

scramble to save Southdale courts

Following long run in Southdale Center, new home is Richfield BY ANDREW WIG SUN NEWSPAPERS After renovation at Southdale Center ousted the shop from its long time home last December, the shop started by Bill Roase’s grandfather, one of the first tenants of the first indoor mall in the country, has re-appeared, this time in a humble yet eclectic strip of shops in Richfield. Ralph’s Shoe Service has opened its doors on Penn Avenue, next to the blue grass music shop, the baseball card shop and the ice cream parlor. And after a week in his new commercial home, Roase says it feels like just that. “It feels like home here to me,” the Bloomington resident said last Thursday, on his shop’s third day in its new location. It helps that customers haven’t seemed to miss a beat, following Roase a mile east to the Penn Central neighborhood, near 66th Street. “Sometimes I’ll come around and give them a hug,” said Roase, admitting sometimes tears come to his eyes,

As part of security plan, Hennepin County Board may close Edina courtrooms Sept. 1 BY MIKE HANKS SUN NEWSPAPERS

Bill Roase grinds away at a heal in the back of his shoe repair shop. Roase was glowing last week as he got accustomed to his new digs in Richfield. He moved Ralph’s Shoe Service to a storefront near 66th Street and Penn Avenue after being ousted from his space in Southdale Center at the end of December. (Photo by Andrew Wig – Sun Newspapers) Thursday evening, they were there as neighbors, stopping in as if greeting the new family on the block. They saw Ralph’s was open and decided to swing through, Dan said, simply because “we were just glad this was his new home.” Roase isn’t shy explaining

even. He can feel comfortable getting emotional, because “almost everybody that comes through those doors, I recognize them, because they’re my customers.” Dan and Kory Everson have patronized Ralph’s at the Southdale location, but last

how his new spot beats the mall. He said it is about 300 square feet bigger and half the rent, for one. Plus, he’ll finally have a chance to take a vacation, the first one since 2006; at Southdale, he had to stay open 7 days a week. RALPH’S: TO PAGE 9

A proposal to close Hennepin County courtrooms in Edina has drawn strong opposition from city officials most affected by the plan. Hennepin County Board members recently discussed plans for weapons screening at the county’s suburban court facilities and closing the Southdale courts in Edina by Sept. 1. Closing the courts, which handle low level criminal matters such as traffic citations, would force residents, city officials and police to use courts in downtown Minneapolis, Minnetonka or COURTS: TO PAGE 25

Edina plastic surgeon has fond memories of 6th trip to Peru BY RACHEL M. ANDERSON CONTRIBUTING WRITER It has been close to two months since Dr. Robert Wilke of Edina Plastic Surgery returned from a charity trip to Peru. Yet, the memories of what he accomplished there are still as fresh as if they had happened just yesterday. He was able to help transform the lives of about 30 children who, without his help would not have been able to get their cleft lip and cleft palate deformities fixed. “It really tugs at your heart strings when you see a child with a severe facial deformity. To be able to do a surgery and turn them basically into a normal looking kid with just a scar on their lip really makes you feel good,” he said. This was not Wilke’s first charity trip overseas to do mission work. It was his sixth, but this trip will be especially memorable because this time, Wilke brought along his 14-year-old daughter, Alexandra. “[She] has always had a real interest in going and has asked to go many times. I wouldn’t let her until she turned 14 and I felt that she was mature enough to handle it, and this

Dr. Robert Wilke is holding a baby about to go into surgery. His daughter, Alexa Wilke, traveled with him to Peru to help with the kids. (Submitted photo) was the year.” Wilke says his daughter wants to be a doctor too. “She really did a great job

helping out, mainly in the pre-op area where there were lots of crying babies and kids who just need to be distracted.

She played games with the kids. It was a really neat experience for her,” he said. As for Wilke, his first medical mission trip was to Ecuador back in 1997 when he was still a resident at the University of Wisconsin – Madison. He explains that the school’s head of plastic surgery at the time, Dr. Dave Dibbell, had all of his residents go on mission trips to help people where their skills were so greatly needed. South America’s Hispanic population has an especially high number of cases of cleft lip and cleft palate. “The cause of cleft lip and palate isn’t 100 percent understood. There is definitely a genetic component to it, which is probably why we see more of it there. Some of it might be environmental too,” he said. Cleft lip and cleft palate is not unique to South America though. Babies are born with it in the United States too. What is different, Wilke points out, is that most babies born with facial deformities in the United States have SURGEON: TO PAGE 23

Is your lake service provider state-certified? New law mandates training to help stop spread of AIS BY CHRIS DILLMANN – SUN NEWSPAPERS As what little ice that’s left melts off the lakes in Hennepin County, people are going to be gearing up for the summer. This means putting docks and boats back into the water. Yet, this season a new expectation on how that’s done is on the books. The Lake Minnetonka Conservation District and Minnehaha Creek Watershed District are urging people that hire lake service providers assure they are trained and certified by the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources. Minnesota Waters is also partnering with the DNR in holding state-wide training sessions. “This training will help them detect if there are aquatic invasive species on equipment and how to decontaminate that equipment,” said communications director with MCWD Telly Mamayek. Lake service providers include dock installers, commercial marinas, commercial transport companies and boat repair companies. The MN DNR’s mandatory training program was enacted by the State of Minnesota in 2011 to prevent the spread of AIS. The training and certification process is a three-hour training course, which most have gone through said executive director with the LMCD Greg Nybeck. “We just want to make sure when we use people they verify the providers they are using, which are mandated by law to go through the training and that they’ve gone through the training,” Nybeck said. As AIS continue to spread, the hope is this will be another weapon to fight the problem. “This has been a concern for awhile,” Mamayek said. “This is a primary way of

Time is now to vote on the stadium bill Minnesotans say they treasure the Minnesota Vikings football team, but they don’t want to help pay for a new stadium to keep them. That’s the dilemma for the Minnesota Legislature that keeps stalling, hoping they can put this decision off until after the November elections. Meanwhile, the Vikings insist they want a new $975 million stadium and are willing to pay more than $427 million of the cost, as long as someone else pays the remaining $548 million. The central question, however, is not how to pay for it and where to put it. The bottom line is: How important is the Viking team to the quality of life of Minnesotans? If the consensus of the people is to keep the Vikings because they add so much value to the state’s quality of life, then all the people should help pay for a new stadium that will keep them here. This burden should not fall on Minneapolis residents alone through the array of taxes they pay now for facilities like Target Field, the Minneapolis Convention Center and Target Center. Nor should it fall on only those who would pay for electronic pull-tabs, as proposed in the latest stadium plan. The latest

plan calls for a $975 million stadium east of the Metrodome in Minneapolis. It would be financed by $427 million by the Vikings, $150 million by Minneapolis through sales and luxury taxes and $398 million by state-run electronic-pull-tabs. This plan still has to be approved by a reluctant Minnesota Legislature and Minneapolis City Council, who fear the backlash from those who question the Vikings deal when compared to the state’s need to close a budget deficit, to pay for $2.1 billion in withheld payments to school districts and to fund human services. Since this issue has dragged on for 10 years and a plan has been put together for the Legislature, this is the session to vote it up or down. Waiting won’t lead to a better solution. Minnesotans want to believe the Vikings will never leave for a city with a modern stadium. Don’t they recall how the state lost its NBA franchise the Minneapolis Lakers to Los Angeles and the Minnesota North Stars NHL hockey team to Dallas? Have they forgotten how the state fought and regained new hockey and basketball franchises by having to build Target Center and the Xcel Center? A major policy question is: should the

state continue to fund entertainment venues for its residents with local and state taxes? Why not? There’s state and local tax dollars in the Xcel Center in St. Paul, Target Field in Minneapolis, the National Sports Center in Blaine, the Guthrie Theater in Minneapolis, the Mall of America in Bloomington and the TCF Bank Stadium on the University of Minnesota campus. The most recent case of public financing is Target Field in Minneapolis where there is a 0.15 percent sales tax paying two-thirds of the cost. People are raving about this stadium, even as they help pay for it when they buy something in Hennepin County. A consensus is developing that keeping the Vikings maintains the state’s quality of life and a stadium plan is on the table. Let’s vote. — An editorial from the ECM Publishers Editorial Board. New survey values views of students, parents, educators A new national Met Life/Harris Interactive Poll of students, parents, educators and community leaders contains both surprising and expected results. I think it’s a model because it values the views of each group. Individual schools can use the questions that are asked with educators, parents and students, and compare results with the nation. My single strongest recommendation to readers is to take a look at the 130-page study yourself. That’s because you may have different conclusions about what’s most important.

JOE NATHAN Guest Columnist Met Life also provides copies online of past surveys, going back to 1984. (For links to the studies, go online to mnsun.com/links/nathan15.) Met Life’s press release about the study highlights two key findings. · Today’s students report that their parents are more

engaged than did students in 1988. Last year, 64 percent of students reported that they talk to their parents about school every day. That’s up from 40 percent who reported daily conversations in 1988. Over the same period, the number of students reporting that their parents visit their school at least once a month has almost tripled, from 16 to 46 percent. Both talking with youngsters about what’s happening, and visiting the school, are ways to encourage young people. These are positive changes. I would not have expected such

large increases, but they show that many parents are hearing the message about the importance of being involved in their youngster’s education. · Teacher job satisfaction has dropped 18 points from 2008, to the lowest levels in more than 20 years. The number of “very satisfied” teachers has declined from 62 percent in 2008 to 44 percent last year. The number of teachers who feel that their job is not secure has increased from eight percent in 2006 to 34 percent in 2011. NATHAN: TO NEXT PAGE

It cites the value of buildings where schools and community groups share space, making more effective and efficient use of funds. I’ll be writing more about this idea in future columns. There is much more in the report, which is why I encourage you to read it. Many schools already survey faculty, families and students. I think the best use of the report would be for schools to conduct similar surveys, using at least some of the Met Life questions, and then share results. By itself, a survey does not improve anything. But it can help identify strengths and shortcomings. A survey

also can help identify progress and priorities.

Dan and Kory Everson, neighbors to the freshly relocated Ralph’s Shoe Service, stop in last Thursday for no other reason than to welcome shop owner Bill Roase to the neighborhood. Roase reported his customer base has loyally followed him from his Southdale Center shop after moving out at the end of December. (Photo by Andrew Wig – Sun Newspapers)

Ralph’s FROM PAGE 1 “Now I can close the doors,” Roase said, “and say, ‘Hey, I’m gonna take a vacation.’” Roase, who wears a worn Harley Davidson cap, might go to Sturgis. The evidence that his December ouster may be a blessing in disguise goes on. Roase appreciates having windows that see outside. “I can see if it’s raining or snowing,” he said. He can also see the cars go by, he added, noting the high-traffic location. He prefers the sound of the vehicles to the echo-y din of the mall. Also, when the machines in the back room are off, he can hear Marv Wenzel, the owner of the blue grass shop next door, picking at his banjo.

Getting personal Shoe repair is inherently a personal

business. It is Roase’s job not only to repair souls, but to customize footwear for a wild variety of feet. A sizable portion of his business is in custom orthotics, like when he adjusts shoes so they fit snuggly to elderly women’s skinny ankles. Stacey Bridell is not elderly, but the Bloomington resident said she has taught dance her whole life. “I have to have a good show maker to go to because I’ve done everything under the sun to my feet,” she said during her first visit to the new Ralph’s, explaining that years dancing in high heels will take their toll. After a year-and-a-half patronizing the Southdale location, Bridell followed Roase to Richfield. So did south Minneapolis resident Linda White, who appreciates that stores like Ralph’s still exist. “It’s hard to find a shoe store that actually repairs shoes,” she said. There do seem to be fewer of them, RALPH’S: TO PAGE 11

Ralph’s FROM PAGE 9 White observed, noting the one she used to patronize in near her workplace in St. Paul recently shit down. She did not hesitate to bring in four or five sets of women’s shoes for repair, telling Roase there are more to come. “I’ve been holding out for this guy,” White said, “just reading the news and waiting for him to open.” The reception has taken Roase aback. “I’ve had so much support from Richfield, it’s been unbelievable,” he said. “That’s what really blows me away.” The support started when he found his new location in late December. It continued as Minneapolis-based Ruth Piano Movers moved the furniture and machines from his old shop free of charge. Roase said he tried to pay, but they wouldn’t have it. He did, at least, get to buy three

of them lunch at Sandy’s Tavern across from the new shop. And now that he’s getting settled, “I feel like I just fit in with the guys over here.” Roase said he had felt less and less enthusiastic about coming into work at his shop in Southdale. That feeling, “it had gone away,” he said. But it has returned, and “I’m excited to get to work.” Still, much is the same for Roase, the cobbler. He has the same customers, and new ones. The counters and the displays and slating where he hangs are all merchandise are the same. And even the new storefront is actually much similar to the original store his grandfather Ralph started at 50th Street and Xerxes Avenue in Minneapolis, before moving to the mall. So for Roase and his shoe repair shop, it is back to normal. Despite all the emotion, he is now able to get back to work, putting it simply: “I’m back doing what I was doing.”

Cobbler Bill Roase puts a new heel on a pair of loafers. Roase has an extensive list of reasons he appreciates his new shop space over his old Southdale Center location. Among them: Kids don’t prank him by tricking the doorway sensor and running, making Roase needlessly leave his work in the back. Now, he can work in peace, unless a real customer comes through the door. He said business in the opening days at the new location has been steady. (Photo by Andrew Wig – Sun Newspapers)

Latest method for fighting AIS includes organizing BY CHRIS DILLMANN – SUN NEWSPAPERS For concerned citizens or those that just want to get more involved, grant opportunities are available to form new lake associations. Made possible through a partnership between Minnesota Waters and Minnehaha Creek Watershed District, the “Watershed Association Initiative” is beginning its sixth year of grants. With more than 120 lakes in Hennepin County, Program Coordinator with Minnesota Waters, Alex Gehrig, says the more the merrier. “We’d love to see a citizen-based organization on every one of those lakes,” Gehrig said. The program provides mini-grants of $500 to organize. “Sometimes there are just those costs associated with forming a group,” Gehrig said. “You want to put on a community event, and will need to apply for a nonprof-

it status with the state, you’ll need a little bit of cash to get moving.” Once established, the Member Match Fund matches member dues and donations up to $1,000 to help fund the projects. The formation of lake associations is to help fight the spread of Aquatic Invasive Species and to help protect water quality. And all it takes is three to five people to want to make a difference. “Usually a group of people that has things in common with the lake that you like about it and you would want to do for it,” Gehrig said.

How to form an association A Steering Committee is then formed where Gehrig says he becomes involved. They then develop a talking point on what’s common within the group, taking the ideas to the community and holding community meetings. After that, they would then file for nonprofit status, where they then could begin the action planning.

As more AIS make their way toward metro waters, communications director with MCWD Telly Mamayek says it’s more imperative than ever to get citizen involvement. “The formation of lake associations are ways for citizens to become involved to advocate for their lake and be active in water quality issues,” Mamayek said. “Anytime we can work with an engaged citizen group it is a more effective way of doing what we can to improve the water resource and water quality.” As AIS continue to become more a part of life, Mamyek says they are seeing a lot more citizen interest in lakes and their issues. This was seen when a group of three lake associations, including the Christmas Lake Association, began a grassroots effort to stop the spread of zebra mussels into their clean lakes. Advocating check-

points and an access gate, they wanted to do what it takes to stop zebra mussels from entering the lakes. Mamayek agrees in the sense that the state can’t do it alone and it will take a team effort to protect the bodies of water. “Active citizens are a tremendous aspect in this effort for AIS,” Mamayek said. On the ground, grassroots work is the backbone of the work to protect the bodies of water. Gehrig says people want to do something but they are not sure exactly where to go. “We want to make sure citizens have those resources so that they can take that positive action,” Gehrig said. For those interested in forming a lake association or want to obtain more information, they can contact Alex Gehrig at 651-2787117 or visiting minnehahacreek.org.

Minnetonka-based ‘Women, Wisdom & Wine’ addresses current events Conversation series hosts nine annual topical and relevant lectures BY MATTHEW HANKEY – SUN NEWSPAPERS Women, Wisdom & Wine will highlight the issue of human trafficking at its conversation series event 6:30-9 p.m. Wednesday, March 21, at the Metropolitan Ballroom & Clubroom, 5418 Wayzata Blvd., Golden Valley. Dr. Ellen J. Kennedy, executive director of World Without Genocide, will address sex and labor trafficking in Minnesota, their global implications and actions being taken to prevent these crimes, prosecute perpetrators and protect the victims. World Without Genocide is based in St. Paul at the William and Mitchell College of Law Human trafficking, which includes both sex trafficking and labor trafficking, is a growing criminal industry, with annual revenue of more than $5 billion. The FBI ranks Minnesota as the nation’s 13th largest human trafficking center for children.

“I did not know that human trafficking was a major issue in Minnesota and in fact it is in Minnesota,” said Women, Wisdom & Wine founder and Minnetonka resident Claudia RyanMosley. “We want to pretend that is not an issue or just don’t know about it.” Numbers from the Minnesota Office of Justice Programs show that nearly a thousand trafficking victims were identified in Minnesota 2005 to 2008, but the actual number of victims may be greater. Already this year in the Twin Cities metro area, a man has been sentenced to 11 years in prison for the sex trafficking of a 15-year-old girl. Current members of Women, Wisdom & Wine can register for free. Non-members interested in attending may register online for $40, or become a member at the club’s website. Appetizers and beverages will be provided.

Women, Wisdom &Wine Ryan-Mosley founded Women, Wisdom & Wine last January after retiring from the commercial real estate business. Her goal in starting the conversation lecture series was to engage women who value intelligence, are curious about the world around them and who are passionate about learning in a relaxed social setting, said Ryan-CLAUDIA RYAN-MOSLEY Mosley. “There’s a whole lot of stuff I want to learn about, and I bet I’m not the only one,” she said. The lecture series hosts nine events throughout the year, each with a different presentation topic. The events are free for the organization’s members, who must pay a $300 annual fee. “We try to have topics that are relevant, thought-provoking and somewhat provocative and I try to bring a speaker who I think is the best in the area,” RyanMosley said.

‘We try to have topics that are relevant, thoughtprovoking and somewhat provocative’

She said the organization has grown from 30 members to 150 in just more than a year, evidence to her that the lecture series fills a need in the metro area. “It’s kind of taking off,” she said. “We sold out in January it appears to be a niche where women find a comfortable setting.” All lecture series feature appetizers, a guest speaker and of course, wine. The guest speaker typically speaks for an hour, followed by a question and answer session. The events typically conclude by 9:30 p.m. This lecture series is specifically geared towards women, said RyanMosley. “Women, I think more so than men frankly, need to have more facts before they enter into a debate,” she said. “Again, my goal is to bring facts to women on topics we should care about.” Next month’s Women, Wisdom & Wine lecture series topic is “Women in Business.” For more information about Women, Wisdom & Wine, please visit womenwisdomandwine.com or e-mail Claudia RyanMosley at claudia@ clover3consulting.com.

Postal Service sues union over lockers Suit seeks to overturn arbitration stipulating larger lockers at Eagan distrobution site BY JESSICA HARPER SUN NEWSPAPERS The U.S. Postal Service has taken its union to court over employee lockers in Eagan. A lawsuit was filed this week in hopes of overturning an arbitration ruling that requires the Postal Service to install larger lockers at its processing and distribution center in Eagan. Though it may seem inconsequential, the expense of installing larger lockers would be $200,000, according to a Minneapolis-St. Paul Business Journal report.

The issue surfaced two years ago when the American Postal Workers Union filed a workcondition grievance against the Postal Service. In it, the union claimed employees’ existing lockers were too narrow and short to accommodate winter gear. In December, arbitrator Hamah King ordered management at the center to install lockers at least as large as those at the facilities the new center replaced. The postal service argued it would create too great of a financial burden. The federal lawsuit filed March 2 by the U.S. Attorney’s Office alleges King’s ruling “ignored relevant contract language and … disregards the applicable regulation.” It contends that the facility’s lockers abided by federal regulations, but the arbitrator said those regulations didn’t apply to the plant in Eagan.

The suit states King also failed to properly consider the collective bargaining agreement between the Postal Service and the union when forming his opinion. APWU spokeswoman Sally Davidow said she has not yet seen the lawsuit, and declined to comment further. Peter Nowacki, spokesman for the U.S. Postal Service, also declined to comment on the litigation. The Postal Service announced in late February it plans to move mail processing to the Eagan facility from Duluth and Rochester in Minnesota, and La Crosse and Eau Claire in Wisconsin. Its consolidation plan is aimed at reducing the Postal Service’s growing deficit, which is predicted to be approximately $12 billion in 2012.

Do some research--When hiring any contractor it’s always desirable to keep it local. Good contractors will offer references from clients near or in your community. But make sure that they personally perform the work. Many contractors will sell or subcontract the work out to someone else, especially if they are too busy or can do so for a lower cost. These subcontractors may not have the experience that you need and they may not be insured. Trust is a major component between contractor and customer. Failure to research the best contractors who are trustworthy can lead to major disappointment. Don’t make this mistake--In 2010, I sold a lake cabin in Park Rapids, Minn. After having my boat repaired at a Park Rapids business, I had them put the boat up for sale, on consignment. After making numerous calls throughout the year, I was

Right Way Painting Solutions My name is Paul Moore, owner of Right Way Painting Solutions. As a degreed industrial arts teacher with years of experience in home repair and finishing, my promise to you is trusted, quality service. Right Way is a member of the Better Business Bureau in good standing, with an A-rating. We also possess a 5-star rating with Service Magic. But I’m more than just an owner. I work at the job site to ensure your project is handled professionally and with the highest level of customer service possible. With spring quickly approaching, now is the time to assess your home and determine what projects will help protect your investment and enhance its value. But doing your homework in advance can save you a lot of headaches. Like most homeowners I need to do several projects on the outside of my house. I will need to hire a landscaper to improve my property. Finding the right contractor can be a challenge.

Life is too short for housework.

told the boat still had not sold. Some time later I discovered that the boat had actually been sold six months earlier and the money was never sent to me. The moral of the story? Conduct business with people that are trustworthy, local and will stand by their work. Don’t get lost in the maze--In the painting business, there are many contractors to choose from, but few will be able to offer the level of workmanship and service that is provided by Right Way Painting Solutions. A quick Internet search will reveal an estimated 80 painting contractors throughout the area from which to choose. An estimated 50 of them are located more than 50 miles from the Minneapolis area. Another 20 of them are building contractors that offer their services as non-professional painters, perhaps as a way to supplement their lack of work in construction. This is why the consumer must be diligent in choosing the right painter with experience and knowledge. Our promise to you--I’m Paul Moore and I own Right Way Painting Solutions of Richfield. I live here and my local company has painted hundreds of homes in the Richfield, Bloomington, Edina and the Eden Prairie area for years. Our work is on display every day and we’d be proud to work with you on your next project.

Surgeon FROM PAGE 2 the problem fixed before they turn a year old. But it is not uncommon in countries like Peru and Ecuador to see 10-year-old kids walking around with severe deformities. The problem is mainly attributed to poverty. Parents just don’t have the money to pay for the surgery, so it doesn’t get done. But this past January, about 90 children, including a 7-year-old girl, got the surgeries they so desperately needed for free thanks to the generosity of Wilke and the other volunteers who traveled to Peru. He and his daughter were part of a team of about 20 people, including three surgeons, one resident surgeon, five anesthesiolo-

gists, eight nurses and several volunteers who each paid their own way to get to Peru, then donated their time and services. They worked out of one of the biggest charity hospitals in Lima, Hogar Clinica, a hospital run by the Franciscan Brotherhood. “We had enough staff for three surgery rooms and worked 10 to 12 hour days to perform as many operations as we could, said Wilke, who has been in practice at Edina Plastic Surgery for 15 years. Early on in his career, he traveled to South America on mission trips with the practice’s founder, Dr. Bill Carter, who retired in 2006. These days, Wilke travels with clinicians from throughout the Twin Cities, who are part of a program started up by Dr. Frank Pilney, a now retired surgeon from St. Paul.

Without the assistance of people like Wilke and the team he traveled with to Peru, children like this little girl wouldn't be able to get the facial deformities they were born with fixed. (Submitted photo)

Million Dollar Quartet is the smash hit Broadway musical, inspired by the true story of the famed recording session that brought together rock ‘n’ roll icons Elvis Presley, Johnny Cash, Jerry Lee Lewis and Carl Perkins for the first and only time. On December 4, 1956, these four young musicians were gathered together by Sam Phillips, the “Father of Rock ‘n’ Roll” at Sun Records in Memphis for what would be one of the greatest jam sessions of all time.

Courts FROM PAGE 1 Brooklyn Center. “It makes no rational sense,” according to Bloomington City Attorney Sandra Johnson. Discussions about security measures at the Southdale courts in Edina are “an excuse to close one of the division courthouses,” she said. The county board’s discussion caught city officials off guard. The board considered a proposal for temporary security measures at its suburban courts Feb. 28. Part of that proposal, which was up for a vote that afternoon, was to close the Southdale courts this fall. That was news to Johnson, who first heard of the plan by reading about it in the newspaper the following day. The plan calls for implementing interim safety measures at the suburban courts until a long-term solution is determined through a county study. The cost to implement permanent safety measures at Southdale would be higher

because of the two-story design of its building, fueling the move toward closing the courts. Johnson doesn’t think safety concerns justify closing the building, and at minimum wants the closing of the Southdale courts to be a separate consideration from safety decisions for the court system. “It’s logical to separate the courthouse closure from the security issues,” she said, questioning if the court system can absorb the thousands of Southdale cases into the schedules at the other courts. Hennepin County 6th District Commissioner Jan Callison, who represents Edina, pushed to delay the Feb. 28 decision to close Southdale, saying she wanted public scrutiny of the plan. “Important decisions require some time,” she said. Her call for public scrutiny was heeded, as city officials attended a March 8 committee meeting to review the plan and argue against closing the courts. The Southdale courts provide an informal, convenient way for residents of Bloomington to resolve misdemeanor matters, with Bloomington responsible

for about half of the caseload at Southdale each year, according to Johnson. “Most of our cases are Bloomington residents making mistakes in Bloomington,” she said. “This is not the hardcore stuff.” Felony cases are heard in downtown Minneapolis, where weapons screening is already in place. Moving Southdale cases downtown, or to another suburban court, will have a significant impact on Bloomington officials and police officers, as they will spend more time commuting to court hearings, and incur parking costs downtown. Sending police officers to Minneapolis for a traffic case will reduce patrolling in the city, she explained. Taking police officers off the street is a concern shared by Richfield Deputy Chief Todd Sandell. Moving Southdale cases elsewhere will “take boots off the street for longer periods of time,” he said. Losing the Southdale courts will also complicate the process of getting search warrants signed, according to Sandell. Richfield detectives write hundreds of

25

search warrants a year, and those warrants need to be signed by a judge in order to be executed. When the Southdale courts are open, the signing of a warrant is typically a quick process, Sandell said. “It’s a longer process for them to get in front of a judge downtown,” he said. The costs of closing the Southdale courts would add up quickly for Bloomington. Johnson estimates that the city would spend about $100,000 more transporting and processing detainees to Minneapolis rather than Edina, as well as thousands of dollars in parking fees and mileage expenses for city prosecutors. The cost to implement metal detection wanding at Southdale is estimated at $117,000 per year. Wanding, however, is not the preferred method for security screening, and is being proposed only as an interim security measure in the event the Southdale courts are closed. The security plan for Minnetonka and Brooklyn Center calls for pass-through metal detection devices. The board was to consider the proposal at its March 13 meeting, after this edition of the Sun-Current went to press.

State Class 4A favorite Defending state champion Hopkins (28-1) is the favorite and No. 1 seed in the state Class 4A girls basketball tournament. Edina (25-4) is the second seed. The other seeded teams are No. 3 White Bear Lake (23-6) and No. 4 Eastview (24-5). State Class 4A quarterfinal games were played March 14. Semifinal games are 6 and 8 p.m. Thursday, March 15, at Target Center. The championship game is 8 p.m. Saturday, March 17, at Target Center. Edina might have the best chance of dethroning Hopkins as state champion after defeating Eden Prairie 50-46 in the Section 2 title game. Hopkins is led by the Coffey sisters, Nia and Sydney, and point guard Taylor Anderson. “The big game for us is the first game at state,” said Hopkins coach Brian Cosgriff prior to Wednesday’s state quarterfinal. “If we win, it means we would play two more games.”

Edina High’s boys basketball team had no trouble with Minneapolis South during a 76-51 victory in the first round of the Class 4A, Section 6 tournament March 6. DeBerg led the Hornets’ attack with 22 points. He made several key hustle plays and scored 13 points in a 70-63 victory over Minnetonka March 10.

Hornet boys lose two heartbreakers at state BY JOHN SHERMAN – SUN NEWSPAPERS The 2012 state Class AA boys hockey tournament will be remembered as the tournament of upsets. All of the top four seeds, including fourth-seeded Edina, lost first-round games March 8 at Xcel Energy Center. None of the opening-day losses was more heartbreaking than Edina’s. Christian Horn of Benilde-St. Margaret’s scored with 23.9 seconds remaining in the third period to end the Hornets’ state title dreams, 3-2. The following day, in a similar game, Edina lost to No. 1 seed Duluth East 3-2 in the consolation semifinals. And with that Edina wrapped up a 23-7 season. Edina head coach Curt Giles said there was no shame in losing either game. “Our kids played well, and Benilde played well,” he said. “We knew they were good.” It was a game of momentum swings, but

Edina generally had the upper hand and outshot the Red Knights 38-26. The first period ended scoreless. BSM’s Grant Besse broke the ice with a powerplay goal in the second period. Edina sophomore forward Connor Hurley scored the equalizer on a power play later in the period. Dan Labosky’s breakaway goal gave BSM a 2-1 lead in the third period, and then Andy Jordahl’s rebound goal for Edina tied the score. Late in the third period, BSM killed off a Hornet power play. Just when it looked like the game was headed for overtime, BSM’s Horn beat two Edina defensemen to the outside and wristed home the winning goal. “One of their defensemen took a step toward the middle, and I saw I could beat him to the outside,” said Horn. “Someone told me their guys fell and we were on a 2on-0.” STATE: TO NEXT PAGE

Edina High’s sophomore forward scored one of two Hornet goals in a 3-2 loss to Benilde-St. Margaret’s in the first round of the Class AA boys hockey tournament March 8 at Xcel Energy Center. Benilde-St. Margaret’s went on to win the state championship March 10 when it beat Hill-Murray 5-1.

Lindsey Johnson Edina High’s girls basketball team defeated Eden Prairie 50-46 in the Class 4A, Section 6 championship game at Hopkins Lindbergh Center. Johnson, a senior forward, scored 17 points for Edina. Teammate M.C. McGrory also netted 17.

Sami Reber The former All-Lake Conference girls hockey star from Edina helped the Harvard University women to a 22-9-1 record this winter. One of Reber’s highlights was the goal she scored in an 8-0 victory over Harvard’s archrival, Yale.

Graham Woodward Huge offensive and defense plays by the junior guard helped the Edina High boys basketball team to a 70-63 victory over Minnetonka in the Class 4A, Section 6 semifinals March 9 at Osseo High School. Woodward finished with 24 points.

State FROM PREVIOUS PAGE What was it like to score a goal in that situation? “Well, the whole day had been an eye-opener, watching the seeded teams go down,” said Horn. “We felt, let’s make it interesting and win this one. When we scored, the crowd went insane.” Edina’s fans fell silent, stunned to see only 23.9 seconds remaining. Edina won the draw on the ensuing face-off, but failed to get a shot on net in the waning seconds. For the majority of the Hornet skaters, playing in the state tournament in front of an announced crowd of 18,001 was a new experience. Nick Leer and Connor Beaupre are the only seniors on the Edina roster. “I told the guys to either give a hit or get rocked on the first shift,” said Leer. “We had some opportunities early, and we played hard the whole game.” In the consolation semis against No. 1 seed Duluth East, the Hornets were in position to win, but lost on a late goal for the second straight day. “With a young team, you always wonder how they’ll respond after a tough loss [to Benilde],” said Giles. “We didn’t pack it in. Duluth East was No. 1 in state all season, and this was the year they expected to win state. They’re a very good hockey team with a great first line, four strong players in the back and good goaltending.”

Edina came out flying. Leer scored on Louie Nanne’s assist to give the Hornets a 1-0 lead in the first period. After a scoreless second period, both teams went for broke in the third. A goal by Duluth East’s Dom Toninato tied the score 1-1 at 2:37. Edina responded quickly, retaking the lead 2-1 on Hurley’s goal at 3:11. Jake Randolph pulled the Greyhounds even with a goal at 6:54. Toninato’s second goal of the game at 14:35 put Duluth East in position to get the win. The Hornets played the last 1:02 with goalie Willie Benjamin on the bench in favor of an extra attacker, but could not score the tying goal. Benjamin made 27 saves for Edina while Dylan Parker had 21 stops for the Greyhounds. Looking back on the 2011-12 season, Giles said, “I am extremely impressed with our performance throughout the playoffs. Our young kids picked things up early in the season. We stayed pretty consistent and worked through a couple of rough spots.”

Edina revels in trip to state girls tournament BY GREG KLEVEN – SUN NEWSPAPERS Edina and Eden Prairie are Lake Conference girls basketball rivals and very familiar with each other. The Hornets and Eagles met twice during the regular season and split a pair of games. Eden Prairie won the first meeting 63-56, but Edina came back to edge the Eagles 36-34 late in the season. Top-seeded Edina won the season series with EP and claimed a berth in this week’s state Class 4A tournament with a hard-fought 50-46 victory over secondseeded Eden Prairie in the Section 2 finals March 9 at Hopkins Lindbergh Center. Edina (25-4) avenged a loss to Eden Prairie (22-6) in last year’s section championship game. The Hornets are the second seed in the state 4A tournament and were scheduled to play Duluth East (22-5) in the quarterfinals at 2 p.m. Wednesday, March 14, at Target Center. The winner of that contest advances to the state semifinals at 8 p.m. Thursday, March 15, at Target Center against either third-seeded White Bear Lake (23-6) or Osseo (24-5). The championship game is set for 8 p.m. Saturday, March 17, at Target Center. The state Class 4A upper bracket has top-seeded Hopkins (28-1) playing Lakeville North (21-8) and No. 4 Eastview

(24-5) tipping off against St. MichaelAlbertville (22-7) in the quarterfinals March 14. Edina coach Matt Nilsen knows the Eden Prairie personnel so well that he knew the Hornet leads of 23-17 at halftime and 34-23 six minutes into the second half were not safe. “We were up by 10 points in the second half and I was expecting a run from Eden Prairie,” said Nilsen. “Eden Prairie started shooting well and we found ourselves down by one point in the final minutes. “But we didn’t stop fighting and held our composure. We came right down the court and regained the lead.” Edina led 48-44 with 10 seconds remaining in regulation after senior forward Lindsey Johnson made a field goal. However, Eden Prairie’s Shayne Mullaney hit a shot to cut the deficit to 4846 with 2.9 seconds left. Edina senior guard Katybeth Biewen clinched the win with two free throws. Junior guard M.C. McGrory and Johnson shared scoring honors for Edina with 17 points each. McGrory scored 14 points in the second half. Other Hornet scorers were Madeline Rodriguez (8), Biewen (6) and Shannon Good (1). Edina’s defense did a good job shutting down Eden Prairie’s All-State standouts — forward Jackie Johnson and guard

Shayne Mullaney. Both seniors are headed to the University of Minnesota next season to play for the Gophers. Mullaney averaged 17.6 points during regular-season play and Johnson netted about 15 points per game. However, the Hornet defense limited Mullaney to nine points and Johnson to eight points. Eden Prairie’s other point producers were Cassy Saxton (9), Annie Thul (7), Martha Kuderer (7), Carley Tibbetts (4) and Samantha Trammel (3). “We tried to focus defensively on stopping Mullaney and Johnson and did a good job of that,” said Nilsen. Edina’s Lindsey Johnson wasn’t surprised with her team’s section championship performance. “Eden Prairie is a fantastic team, but our players stepped up and played a great game,” said the Hornets’ Johnson. “Our team never gets down and stays poised.” McGrory is glad her team can attend a state tournament as participants and not spectators after sustaining frustrating section title game losses the past two seasons. “It feels great to finally win a section championship game after losing to Chaska two years ago and Eden Prairie last season,” said McGrory. “We are looking forward to playing in the state tournament.”

Edina outlasts Minnetonka in Section 6 hoops semifinals BY JOHN SHERMAN – SUN NEWSPAPERS Edina High’s boys basketball team beat Minnetonka for the third time this season, 70-63, March 9 in the Class 4A, Section 6 semifinals at Osseo High School. It was a game of momentum swings and lead changes. Two hustle plays late in the contest ultimately gave Edina the edge, according to Hornet head coach Pat Dorsey. “Flip DeBerg made a big steal, and then Graham Woodward dove on a loose ball and called timeout in front of our bench,” said Dorsey. “Those were plays that sent a message to our whole team.” Down the stretch, Edina “took good shots and didn’t turn the ball over,” Dorsey added. From start to finish, the game kept fans on both sides engaged. Both teams and both coaches scrapped for every inch. “Edina made a couple big plays at the end,” said Minnetonka head coach Tom Dasovich. “It was a case of which team would get the stops at the end. Edina is a well coached team, and they had our number this year.” Edina jumped out to a 7-0 lead and held the advantage throughout the first half. But right at the end of the half, Tonka’s Danny Burger stole the ball and fed teammate Tommy McDermott for a layup that cut Edina’s lead to 26-24. “We kind of limped into halftime with a two-point lead,” said Dorsey. Minnetonka came out red hot to start the second half.

Joe Risinger drained a three-pointer to give Minnetonka a 27-26 lead. Andrew Turnblad’s two-handed dunk and Riley Dearring’s jump shot put the Skippers ahead 31-26. Then Tonka’s freshman guard, Andrew Grosz, went to work. He scored all eight of his points in a short span, hitting two three-point baskets and a jumper from just inside the arc. The Skippers led 40-32. There was no panic on Edina’s part. Woodward hit a three-pointer and two free throws to close the gap. Edina reeled off eight points in a row, including a three-point play by 6-foot-9 junior center Reggie Lynch. The Hornets took the lead 56-55 on DeBerg’s three-pointer from the corner. A blocked shot by Lynch followed, and then DeBerg hit two free throws for a 58-55 Edina lead. Shortly thereafter, he stole the ball and fed Lynch for a left-handed hook shot. Four free throws, two each by Woodward and DeBerg, boosted Edina’s lead to 65-58. Even though McDermott hit a threepointer to cut Edina’s lead to four, it was clear the Hornets still had momentum. Woodward made three of four foul shots to salt away the seven-point win. “The bottom line is, we took care of business,” said Dorsey. “It was an exciting basketball game. I give Tonka total credit. Their guys were out there to compete.” “It was disappointing that we didn’t

Edina High boys basketball guard Graham Woodward (3) soars to the goal against Minnetonka defenders Tommy McDermott (32) and Riley Dearring (24) during a section semifinal game March 9 at Osseo High School. Mark Handberg (22) trails the play in Edina’s 70-63 victory. (Photo by John Sherman – Sun Newspapers) get as far as we wanted to,” said Tonka’s Dasovich. “I told our guys after the game that the season ends with a loss for all but one team. “We had a tough time stopping Woodward. He’s such a good player.” The game within the game involved watching Woodward and Tonka’s McDermott match guard skills. Each player finished with 24 points, so it was basically a standoff. Lynch was strong on the boards and scored 14 points for Edina while DeBerg added 12. Dearring, Tonka’s 6-3 junior guard,

scored nine points. Grosz, Risinger and Latrell Love contributed to a balanced Skipper attack with eight points each. Edina improved to 20-8 overall with Friday night’s win. Minnetonka finished 19-9. The Skippers’ improvement from four wins last season to 19 this season was the biggest jump for any Class 4A metro-area team. “Our goal is to be in the conversation every year,” said Dasovich, who just completed his second year as Tonka’s head coach. “That’s the idea – to compete for a championship.”
