School Board approves $2.3M in cuts Spanish program among reductions; district could offer after-school class in its place BY KATIE MINTZ SUN NEWSPAPERS The Edina School District plans to offer an after-school language program next year in place of Spanish at elemen-

tary schools. The Edina School Board approved $2.3 million in budget adjustments for the 20112012 school year Monday night, May 16, including the elimination of Spanish.

Several parents attended the meeting in an attempt to save the program, which now begins in grade 3. “This is the third time in five years this program has been targeted for some type of

reduction, in this case elimination,” said Tim Bruzek, who has two children at Creek Valley Elementary School. “Each time parents have SPANISH: TO PAGE 24A

The city of Edina will likely end a yearlong moratorium on rooftop dining with an indefinite ban. The Edina City Council voted unanimously Tuesday, May 17, to table a proposed ordinance amendment that would allow rooftop patios in parts of the city. The council directed staff to return with a revised amendment prohibiting rooftop dining until further study. “We’re not there yet,” said Council member Joni Bennett. “To try to craft something hurriedly, I think we risk ... creating a lot of problems.” Currently, nothing in city code prohibits eating on

Doug Johnson said the greatest part of his job with Edina Public Schools was that it was never the same – even after 30 years. The longtime director of Community Education Services and community relations oversaw enrichment classes on hundreds of topics, led referendum efforts and made partnerships with local organizations. “I never left the office with a list crossed out,” said Johnson, whose last day was Wednesday, May 25. “Stress to me is having nothing to do. We’re always looking ahead.” His dedication didn’t leave much fodder for a roast at a retirement reception Tuesday, May 17, at the Edina Community Center. Most of the silly stories told by Tom Pederstuen, former Edina human resources director, and Jay Willemssen, retired Edina director of business services, turned out to be their own. “He has built one of the most respected community education departments in the state,” said Pederstuen, who now works in

another metro district. “It’s fun to kid him but it was more fun to work with him because he was such a team player.” Johnson, an Edina resident since 1984, retired after three decades with Edina Public Schools, where he oversaw community education programs including the Center for Adult Education, Youth Development, Edina Family Center, the Community Volunteer Program and Edina Resource Center. Supt. Ric Dressen said while Johnson always gave 100 percent, he seldom took credit for the district’s success. “He was always that person giving out, and sharing back and telling us how we’d made a difference,” said Dressen. Johnson, who grew up in neighboring Richfield, didn’t intend to enter community education. The field was just emerging in the early 1970s, he said. He received a bachelor’s degree in secondary education, but getting a job as a teacher was difficult at the time. “I think I applied for a job that had 700 or 800 applicants,” he said. He went into business as a buyer for the old Donaldson’s department store, and then got a master’s degree in park and recreation administration. He landed an internRETIRE: TO NEXT PAGE

Retire FROM PREVIOUS PAGE ship in community education in 1976 and has worked in the field ever since, except one year he took off to work for a nonprofit. Johnson said he saw an opportunity to join his interest in education with a broader community connection – “having a foot in the school side and a foot in the community side and a lot of times trying to bring the sides together.” He came to Edina Public Schools in May 1981 from the Anoka-Hennepin School District Community Education Department. “In 1981 we were in a midst of a period of declining enrollment,” said Johnson. The district had just shuttered Edina East High School. The former Cahill and Wooddale elementary schools were closed, and Highlands Elementary School was also taken out of commission for a few years. Dressen said Johnson was given the charge to expand community education and maximize the use of the former high school, which became the Edina Community Center. It is now home to community education and Normandale Elementary School, as well as several local organizations, but that first year it had one lone tenant – Minneapolis Lutheran High

School. Leasing soon turned around. For a time, Edina was making close to $1 million a year leasing the center and Highlands, said Johnson. In 2012, the Edina Community Center will hit a milestone. It will have been a community center longer than it ever was a high school. Over the years, Edina Community Education Services’ budget has grown from under $800,000 to more than $7 million – close to 90 percent of which is generated by user fees. “Edina Community Education is structured in a way it costs the district very few dollars out of the general fund,” said School Board member Peyton Robb, “and we serve many more people than other community education programs in larger districts.” When Johnson started, Edina offered adult enrichment classes, after-school childcare and curriculum resources. Since then it’s expanded to include youth enrichment, early childhood family education and a business-education partnership. Edina Chamber of Commerce President Arrie Larsen Manti said Johnson was a founding organizer of Connecting with Kids, an effort to create a supportive community environment for Edina’s youth, and is a strong community leader. Support grads with alcohol-free parties Serving alcohol to teens unsafe, illegal BY HEATHER HAEN ANDERSON CONNECTING WITH KIDS EDINA EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR Graduation from high school and a party to celebrate it are rites of passage for many teens. Like thousands of other Minnesota parents, I have a senior in high school who will graduate in just a few short weeks. And like thousands of other graduates, my daughter would like a party to celebrate her achievement. No longer a child, she is eager to start college in the fall and join the ranks of other adults. Planning her graduation party has been a lot of fun, but there are decisions to be

made. Should we highlight her life in high school or emphasize her college plans? Who should be on the guest list? What time of day? What food should we serve? Our easiest decision was to celebrate without alcohol – even for our guests of legal drinking age. We want to provide a safe place for our daughter and her friends while communicating our expectations that underage drinking is not acceptable. Besides the fact that it is against the law to serve alcohol to people under the age of 21, there are many other reasons we chose to host an alcohol-free party. First and foremost is our concern for the safety and well-being of all our guests. According to Students Against Destructive Decisions (SADD), alcohol use by teens affects their cogni-

Medicine collection event Hennepin County is providing residents the opportunity to properly and safely dispose of their unwanted, expired and unused medicines at a medicine collection event in Richfield. There is no charge, but the program is for Hennepin County residents only. The event will be held at 7 p.m. Thursday, June 23, at the Richfield Ice Arena parking lot, 636 66th St. E. The Hennepin County Sheriff ’s Office, Hennepin County Environmental Services, and the City of Richfield are sponsoring the medicine collection event. To assure compliance with federal regulations, Hennepin

County Sheriff ’s deputies will oversee collection of medications. Put all the medications (whether they’re in original packaging or in clear individual bags containing loose pills) – in a larger clear plastic bag, so you’re dropping off just one package at the collection site. Some items will not be accepted, such as needles or sharps, medicines from businesses, including health-care facilities, long-term-care facilities, pharmacies, doctors’ offices, pharmaceutical sales representatives or veterinary clinics. tive functioning and impairs their learning and memory. Teens, like all of us, make poor decisions while under the influence. When teens consume alcohol they are more likely to commit or be the victim of a crime. They are more likely to engage in risky sexual behaviors. They are more likely to die in an alcohol-related car crash. I realize that some parents allow alcohol to be served at their children’s celebrations and I have heard several rationalizations for their decision. Many parents think that teens need to learn to use alcohol safely by drinking at home. Others, believing that students are going to drink anyway, want to provide a safe environment for them to do so. I’ve also had parents tell me that they want to reward their children for not using alcohol in high school

by offering it at their grad party. These arguments are wrong. The reality is that there is no safe amount of alcohol for teens because of their still developing brains. Also, many teens choose not to consume alcohol – over one-third, according to SADD. By celebrating without alcohol we can reinforce their decision to lead substancefree lives. Even though our children are graduating from high school and entering the ranks of adults, they are still our kids and it is our responsibility to keep them safe. So when you are planning their graduation party, honor their achievements and dreams with a safe, alcohol-free celebration. Junior Police participant continues family tradition Former Edina student Police Officer Mike Seeger gives badge to son BY KATIE MINTZ • SUN NEWSPAPERS Bob Seeger pinned a plastic Junior Police badge on his son’s shirt 26 years ago at Countryside Elementary School in Edina. It stuck. Mike Seeger is now an officer with the Edina Police Department and runs the program that first exposed him to police work. Every spring he and other officers visit second- or third-grade classrooms at most of Edina’s public and private schools along with representatives from community organizations that fund Junior Police. For most kids, it’s a chance to learn about safety and get to know a police officer. “A lot of them just want to touch the badge,” said Mike, who’s since upgraded from plastic. “It makes us more real – some-

one they can approach and talk to.” But for one student at his alma mater, the visit Tuesday, May 17, was a special occasion. Both Mike and Bob visited Sam Seeger, 7, at Countryside, continuing the family tradition. “It brings back a lot of memories,” said Mike, an Edina resident. “It puts a smile on my face to see [my son] go through these milestones.” When Bob visited his class nearly 30 years ago, he came as a member of the former Exchange Club, the original supporter of Edina Junior Police. That group later became the Edina Morningside Rotary Club. Today, Rotary and the Edina Crime Prevention Fund purchase the badges, booklets and souvenir ID cards for the program. Bob, a retired architect for Wells Fargo Bank and a member of Rotary, continues to visit Countryside with Junior Police each year. He said children are exposed to a lot of violence on TV and may not always see the JUNIOR POLICE: TO NEXT PAGE

Junior Police FROM PREVIOUS PAGE best side of police. “It’s important kids are involved in a very positive manner with police,” said Bob, who lived in Edina for 35 years before recently moving to Minnetonka. Mike said his desire to enter law enforcement dates back to his days at Countryside where he was a crossing guard leader. Like his father he believes Junior Police serves an important purpose. He took over the program when he joined the police department about 10 years ago. Only a few Edina schools were still participating. He revamped the student booklet and encouraged schools to give the program another chance. “This year we worked with 660 kids,” Mike said. Officers give simple safety lessons to the young students during the first visit. Topics include how to lock their house, what happens when they call 911 and strangers. Mike said when he asks kids what a stranger is, they often paint a menacing verbal picture of someone wearing a mask or hiding behind bushes. “We have to explain to them a stranger is anyone they don’t know,” and they should

After the officers leave, students com-

plete activities related to the visit in the booklet. At the end there’s an open area for students to write a question or message to

police. A week later, an officer returns to the class to look over the completed books and talk one-on-one to each student. Rotary and Crime Fund representatives present the students with a badge and stamp their fingerprint on the ID card. The Seegers were joined at Countryside by Crime Prevention Fund board members Kurt Buchanan and Harold Westerberg, as well as Police Reserve Officer Heather Wilmes. Mike said a lot of students ask him how many officers are on the force, or about Edina K-9 Diesel – Seeger is one of two K-9 handlers for the department – but he hopes one day if a student is in need, they will use the visit to reach out for help. Edina Police Chief Jeff Long said though the Junior Police program is basic, it is incredibly valuable in keeping youth safe. When a man approached students outside Concord Elementary School on their way home in April 2009, they knew not to get in his vehicle because they had just been through the program, said Long. The man later pleaded guilty to two felony counts of stalking. “All we’re asking of the kids is to get to know police officers, get to know how to be safe and what to do if there’s trouble,” said Long. Johnson has also helped with the creation of the Edina Education Fund, Edina Unplugged and countless other initiatives. Five years ago, he was asked to lead the district’s community relations following budget cuts. He is also involved in a number of community organizations including Edina Rotary. Johnson said he is proud to have worked for Edina Public Schools. “When I came to the school district it

was recognized as the top in Minnesota and one of the top in the country, and now 30 years later it still is,” said Johnson. “By any measure you want to pick, Edina is No. 1.” Johnson said in retirement he would spend more time with his wife Karen, a recently retired nurse, and their four children, who all graduated from Edina, as well as their three grandchildren and another on the way. Johnson, an avid Twins fan, said he also hopes to expand his part-time tour guide gig at Target Field. He has memorized 25 pages of facts about the field, including that the scoreboard – larger than a NBA basketball court – is the fourth largest in the major leagues and yet only costs about $20 an hour to run due to efficient LED lights. Valerie Burke, currently employed as Edina Public Schools coordinator for the Edina Resource Center and Community Volunteer Programs, has been hired to succeed Johnson.

Edina Community Channel 16 documentary “The Moses Miracle” received a Gold Screen Award in the 2011

National Association of Government Communicators competition. EDINA 16 received third-place in the documentary category behind entries from the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation and the United States Geological Survey and U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service. Only 19 of the 135 winning entries in 38 categories came from county or city government agencies. “The Moses Miracle” was one of just two winners from

Minnesota. The documentary followed the Rotary Club of Edina last spring when they brought 6-year-old Moses Mwaura to Minnesota from Africa to have his crossed eyes surgically corrected and to repair his damaged teeth. EDINA 16’s Aaron Klein and Steve Christiansen worked on the project, along with former Communications Coordinator Marty Doll.

in grades 4 and 5 would be transported to the Edina Community Center, where an after-school activity program for those grade levels is already located. Supt. Ric Dressen said the optional after-school program is a cost-effective way to offset the loss of the regular Spanish program. “By no means do we think this is a replacement but it is an alternative,” he said. “It is an option we can offer families to try to address this need.” He said the district, which receives 70 percent of its funding from the state, must make tough decisions in its fourth consecutive year of budget adjustments. Administration has projected up to $9.25 million in cuts needed over the next three years if enrollment and spending continue to grow at historic levels, and state funding stays flat. The district identified up to $3 million in cuts for 2011-2012 divided in four tiers of approximately $750,000 each. Monday night, Dressen recommended implementing the first three tiers – a total of $2.3 million, or about 2.8 percent of the general fund budget. The move also increases class sizes at the secondary level, reduces special education and administrative staffing, and increases parking, activity and Advanced Placement fees, among other impacts. “At this point it does not reduce the

Edina Public Schools experience,” Dressen said. “It’s going to change it. It really is and we recognize that. It’s not a position we want to be in.” School Board member Bert Ledder motioned to remove $187,000 in reduced elementary staffing costs that affect the Spanish program from the third tier. Her motion failed without a second. The board approved all items in the first three tiers 6-1, Ledder dissenting. Dressen said approval means administration will begin to implement the changes. The decision eliminates 52 employees, including three in the Spanish program, according to Director of Human Resources and Administrative Services Gwen Jackson. Final budget approval is slated for the June 20 school board meeting. Ledder argued that if the district’s mission is to educate students for a global community, an elementary foreign language program is essential. Norlin-Weaver said the district is exploring offering either one or two hours a week of instruction through Community Education and could also expand the program to include all languages taught in middle schools. “Our hope is that we’re actually able to expand the amount of time that students are engaged in the language as well as expand the range of languages

available,” she said. She estimated the cost for one hour of instruction a week for eight weeks was $125. Ledder said the after school program could create inequity. “It will be an unintended consequence. Not everybody will be able to take a class after school. Not everybody will be able to afford a class after school. Not everybody who is not able to afford a class after school will be able to qualify for scholarships,” she said. Other school board members said they didn’t like to see Spanish removed from elementary schools, but that they must make balanced cuts across elementary and secondary levels. If cuts are avoided now, they could be required the following year or in a matter of weeks when the Minnesota Legislature settles the budget, they said. Board member Peyton Robb said a recent proposal for education funding in the Legislature would cut $262,000 from Edina schools over the next biennium. “There’s not a rosy pathway ahead for us,” said Robb. Dressen did not rule out having to pursue items in the fourth tier this year depending on the legislature. Cuts at SPANISH: TO NEXT PAGE

Dressen said administration has already begun to consider potential areas for adjustment in the 2012-2013 budget. He said transportation fees will be studied next year, as well rearranging secondary schedules, reducing district graduation requirements above state standards and extending the curriculum review cycle. “I’m not excited about this plan but I think it’s responsible and it has addressed the challenge that was put before the administration,” he said. Recent enrollment figures show some additional room. Concord Elementary School will now accept 11 kindergartners who have a sibling currently attending the school in grades 1-5. South View Middle School will accept 15 students in grades 6-8 who have a sibling currently attending or that has attended South View in the past. • unanimously approved a settlement agreement relating to faulty wood panels installed at Edina High School and the Edina Performing Arts Center in 2007. The district was pursuing legal action against installer Acoustic Associates, bond provider Hartford Insurance and Prodema, the manufacturer of the wood panels. According to the settlement, Acoustic Associates will pay the district $27,500 and provide labor to remove and replace the faulty panels. The district will pay $30,000 to Prodema for an upgraded version of the panels. Both companies will provide separate 10-year warranties.

Famous Dave FROM PAGE 1A the competition airing this month. The day before filming began last summer, however, Anderson fell from a ladder while assembling his smoker. He collapsed his ankle and twisted his knee, but that didn’t hold him back from a shot at $50,000 and the “Best in Smoke” title. As the audience learned, he’ll compete as one of three finalists in the series finale 8 p.m. next Sunday, May 29. “It’s the American Dream. It’s never, ever giving up,” Anderson told his guests following the judges’ decision to spare him from elimination on the third episode. Anderson, who has just squeaked by in the bottom two each show so far, said his story and that of Famous Dave’s demonstrate the power of determination and hard work. “We all go through tough times. We have our ups and downs but you never, ever give up because you never know how it’s going to turn out,” he said. Anderson, by the way, won’t reveal if he won or not. He had to sign a $1 million confidentiality agreement.

Even his wife Kathy doesn’t know the outcome yet. Aric Nissen, vice president of marketing for Famous Dave’s, said either way, it’s been exciting for the Minnetonka-based company to watch Anderson. “Just to be a finalist is amazing,” Nissen said. “The tremendous heart and passion he puts into this – overcoming 100 degree heat and rainstorms on a bum knee and crazy ankle – I’m so impressed.” Anderson, who has no formal training, learned to cook from his parents, both Native American. His dad from the Choctaw Nation in southern Oklahoma insisted barbecue be smoked over hardwood, he said. His mom from the Lake Superior Band of Ojibwe in northwestern Wisconsin gave him his first job making and selling Indian fry bread and venison sandwiches at tribal powwows. He opened the first Famous Dave’s in 1994 in Hayward, Wis., and the second the following year in the southwest Minneapolis Linden Hills neighborhood. Today he still owns the original Famous Dave’s and is chairman emeritus for the now publicly traded company. There are more than 180 restaurants both company-owned and

franchised across the country. Anderson said the competition ranks up there as one of the most challenging things he’s ever done. Filmed over 10 days in New York City’s Battery Park in hot summer heat, the days began each morning by 5 a.m. and usually didn’t wrap until close to midnight. Though his recipes have captured more than 500 blue ribbons and trophies in local, regional and national competitions over the years, Anderson said he knew he had to be in top form against his competitors, all younger but accomplished. Remaining in the finale with Anderson are Matt Lang, chef of Fette Sau barbecue restaurant in New York City and Chris Lilly of Big Bob Gibson Bar-B-Q in Alabama. Eliminated in the first three episodes were Sara Horowitz, who previously competed on Fox’s “Hell’s Kitchen” series; Chris Hart, winner of the Jack Daniel’s Invitational Grand Championship in 2009; and Brad Orrison of the Shed BBQ & Blues restaurants with six southern locations. Anderson trained for more than a month at his lake cabin in preparation. He swam to build health and

practiced making rubs, sauces and marinades. He selected longtime employee Charlie Torgerson, Famous Daves’ director of culinary and a graduate of the Culinary Institute of America, to be his assistant on the show. The Rogers resident has been with the company for nearly 15 years and owns three Famous Dave’s franchise restaurants in Mankato, Baxter and Duluth, and the Famous Dave’s stand at the Minnesota State Fair. Anderson said as he helped Torgerson put the flue on their smoker the day before filming began, he fell 5 feet to the ground, but didn’t see a doctor until he returned home to Minnesota. “It turns out I had severe contusion of the knee and it masked the real problem that I actually collapsed my ankle. They had to put six screws and 20 staples in,” said Anderson, who just recently had surgery and is in a cast. Viewers of the show would hardly know. In the first episode, Anderson and the other chefs had to run to get their meat from a truck parked a block away. Anderson made it, but was last. FAMOUS DAVE: TO NEXT PAGE

Famous Dave FROM PREVIOUS PAGE All the best cuts were gone leaving him with a large pork loin that would normally take 12 hours to smoke. He and Torgerson only had four. They came in at the bottom, but redeemed themselves with an appetizer for a Manhattan art gallery opening. The blackberry barbecue sauce topping thin-sliced pork loin on toast points with goat cheese and mint is now available at some Famous Dave’s – and was gobbled up by guests at the viewing party and barbecue Sunday. In the second episode, Anderson is seen briefly off of his feet resting on a stool, but still makes a grilled salad

and dessert, and then fare for a child’s birthday party. It’s not until the third episode Anderson sees one of the paramedics on the set. “This was the first time I actually complained,” Anderson said during a commercial break. He decides to power through the pain. The assistants were given the day off. The remaining four pit masters were paired up and tasked with making two entrees and one side to feed 200 people in five and a half hours. Anderson said his partner Orrison would need him. The judges didn’t like their beef tenderloin kabobs with a blend of Hawaiian and Asian marinade or the spare ribs. They had to go head-to-head in a cook-off to figure out who would be sent home. Anderson said he was confident.

In the Community, With the Community, For the Community

“I would have never put my ribs in aluminum foil like he did,” said Anderson. “I knew when it comes to real barbecue I can stand on my own.” Torgerson, who checked out Yankee Stadium and competitor Lang’s Brooklyn eatery during the cook-off, said he knew Anderson had it in the bag when he heard the meat was chicken thigh. “I said ‘Bingo, we’re in the finals,’” he said. Anderson made a dry rub from salt, black pepper and cayenne. He nearly added a pinch of sugar, but held back recalling judges’ comments that his entries were too sweet. Judge Amy Mills, barbecue aficionado and daughter of champion pit master Mike Mills of 17th Street Bar & Grill restaurants, said in regular competi-

tions, judges don’t have to deliver criticism to contestants’ faces. Mills, who attended the party Sunday, commends Anderson for taking the judges’ feedback in the episode, but says his chicken is “perhaps maybe just a little bit dry.” It didn’t make it in the hour-long segment, but she said she also pulled Anderson aside to recognize his years of work and place in the tight-knit barbecue community. He got the nod to continue in the show. “He’s an icon and someone to be admired and looked up to,” said Mills, adding any of the contestants are capable of winning the “Best in Smoke” title. “Best in Smoke” airs 8 p.m. central standard time Sundays on the Food Network.

Ban FROM PAGE 1A rooftops provided all building and fire codes are met. The city initiated the moratorium last July when new restaurant Cocina del Barrio proposed a rooftop patio in its plans for the former Coldwell Banker Burnet office, 5036 France Ave. S. Barrio’s request was a first for the city. Council members wanted time to study potential impacts and how, if at all, the city should regulate rooftop patios. In April, after months of work, the Planning Commission unanimously recommended making rooftop dining a conditional use in the city. City Planner Cary Teague explained restaurants would be granted a permit as long as they met certain requirements. First, rooftops would be allowed only in the PCD-2 planned commercial zoning district, now limited to the Grandview area and intersections of 50th Street and France Avenue, and 77th Street and Highway 100.

MONDAY

30 Memorial Day

Rooftop patios would have to be a minimum of 50 feet from R-1 and R-2 residential zoning districts. If a restaurant’s rooftop and other outdoor dining exceeded 20 percent of its indoor area, additional parking would be required. Rooftop hours would be limited to 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. Amplified music must not be audible at adjacent properties. No kitchen facility, permanent bar or storage would be allowed, and the patio would have to be screened from nearby residential properties. Teague said the rooftop would also require perimeter fencing per state building code, and meet other building code requirements including accessibility. Teague said the latter, which would require an elevator, is an obstacle for many restaurants and why there are no rooftop patios to date in Edina. Council members had concerns about several of the conditions. With the yearlong moratorium coming to a close June 30, they indicated they will ban rooftop patios to have more time to balance residential and commercial desires. An ordinance amendment with the ban is expected at the next council meeting Tuesday,

June 7. Council members discussed broadening the setback requirement to all residential uses, whether in R-1, R-2 or another zoning district. The condominium project next door to Barrio at the corner of 50th and France would not preclude it from having a rooftop patio under the staff and Planning Commission recommendation because the mixed-use condominium building is zoned PCD-2. There was also debate about the setback distance. Council member Josh Sprague said he supported the 50-foot setback as recommended. “We want to allow eat street to be successful and have some new restaurant uses,” he said. Sprague said anything more would be too restrictive, but the city should take other steps to reduce intrusions, such as prohibiting amplified sound and limiting lighting. He noted that ground-level patio dining is currently a permitted use, which means in that outdoor setting, restaurants do not need to abide by certain rules. Mayor Jim Hovland said he was more comfortable with a 200-foot setback from

residential uses, which is what the city of Minnetonka requires. However, he said he’d rather the city have the power to deny or approve rooftop dining on a caseby-case basis. The city cannot deny a conditional use permit if the conditions are met. Council member Mary Brindle said she was not a fan of rooftop dining, especially for a dense area like 50th and France where parking is already an issue, but would compromise at 100 feet – the distance used in the city of Bloomington. “The time of the year that people are on the rooftop is the time of the year people are sitting on their terrace in the evening,” she said. “Is that a compatible use? Not for me, personally.” Council members indicated they would like to have a joint meeting with the Planning Commission to discuss their reservations and possibly work toward a new draft of rooftop regulations. As for Barrio, which opened in December and has a sidewalk patio, Teague said “they’re not interested in rooftop dining at this time.”

Hornet girls fly high Biewen, Guimont, Good are Lake champs

The Section 6AA track meet is Wednesday, June 1, and Friday, June 3, at Hopkins High Stadium. Hopkins is the defending state Class AA girls champion and returns many of its key athletes from last year, including Elise Anderson, Taylor Anderson, Therese Bredemus, Anna Cich, Bridget Sweeney, Mary Tanoe and Mariah Witt. Eden Prairie, one of the favorites for the section boys title, was last year’s state Class AA champ. The Eagles return key performers such as Aaron Bartnik, Kyle Bratrud, Rashawn Fountain, Rumeal Harris, Mohamed Mohamed and Michael Sandle. Edina placed second in last year’s state Class AA meet. The Hornets’ fortunes may rest on the health of their top sprinter, senior Devin Crawford-Tufts. At last year’s state meet, CrawfordTufts won the 100- and 200-meter dashes and anchored Edina’s 4x100 relay to victory. Distance runners Will Burke, Aldis Inde and Bjorn Thompson are other mainstays for Edina. Wayzata is in the running for the section boys title after winning the Lake Conference title. Distance runners Adam Moline and Josh Thorson are big scorers for WHS along with high jumper Nick Welshons and sprinters Jeff Borchardt, Ryan D’Kae, Erik Roti and Mitch Underhill. Minnetonka’s leaders going into the section meet are hurdler Rashad Cohen, middle-distance runner Christian Skaret and Taylor Dawson in the shot put and discus. Section 6AA preliminaries begin at 3 p.m. Wednesday, June 1. The finals will begin at 10:30 a.m. Friday, June 3. – COMPILED BY JOHN SHERMAN

Field events proved fruitful for the Edina High girls track and field team during the Lake Conference meet May 17 at Hopkins High Stadium. Three Hornets, Katybeth Biewen, Emily Guimont and Julia Good, won field events. Biewen soared 16 feet, 7 inches to win the long jump. Pole vaulter Guimont and high jumper Good posted career bests in their events. “The highest Emily had ever vaulted before was 9-7, and at the Lake meet she cleared 10-4,” said Edina head coach Cole Nelson. “Julia was pretty excited that she high jumped 5-1 for the first time ever. Her previous best was 5 feet.” Nelson added that she was pleased to see Biewen dominate in the long jump. “Early in the season, Katybeth had a sprained ankle, and then she tweaked a hamstring,” said Nelson. “She has her heart set on breaking our school [long jump] record of 17 feet, 7 inches. If she can go into the section meet healthy, with fresh legs, she has a shot. She has been doing some running this spring, but is probably going to focus on the jumps.” The Hornets command performance in the field events at the conference meet included two high finishes from Kelly Fogelson. She took third place in the discus with a toss of 109-7 sixth in the shot put with a throw of 33-2. Molly Kuhs led the Hornets in running events, taking second place in the 1,600 meters. “Molly improved by seven seconds for a career-best time of 5:11.60,” Nelson said. “She is up there competing with the Eden Prairie girls.” Ninth-grader Siena Patty is another Edina runner who made strides at the conference meet. She finished fourth in the 100 dash in 13.29 seconds. Then she added a fifth place in the 200 in 26.95. Piper Bain finished third in the 3,200 in 11:35.09. K.J. Fogelson was Edina’s top finisher in the 300 hurdles, placing eighth in 51.04 seconds. Edina’s top relay performance came

Austin Dover Fourteen saves from Dover helped the Edina High boys lacrosse team to an 11-8 victory over Wayzata in a Lake Conference match May 19.

Julia Good The Edina High track and field standout won the high jump during the Lake Conference meet May 17 at Hopkins High Stadium. Her winning jump was 5 feet, 1 inch.

Emily Guimont Katybeth Biewen of the Edina High girls track and field team is the Lake Conference long jump champion for 2011. Emma Egan-Lawless, Siena Patty, Good and Carina Joyce took third place in 1:49.45. The Hornets placed fourth in the 4x800 relay with Bain, Michaela Connors, Caitlin Raasch and Stephanie Kohn. Edina’s 4x100 relay also placed second with Emma Reese, Adrienne Hebb, Carina Joyce and Sarah Engbretson. Hopkins coasted to the Lake Conference girls championship and added a state Class 3A True Team title three days later. Although the Hornets can’t match Hopkins’ strength across the board, they did outscore Hopkins in the field events at the conference meet. If that trend continues next week, the Hornets are likely to have some state qualifiers.

The Lake Conference pole vault champion from Edina High cleared 10 feet, 4 inches May 17 at the Hopkins High Stadium track. She also placed third in the triple jump and seventh in the long jump.

Aldis Inde The Edina High distance runner coasted to the 3,200-meter championship at the Lake Conference meet May 17 at the Hopkins High Stadium track.

Brooke Jones Strong goaltending by Jones helped the Edina High girls lacrosse team in a 17-7 victory over Chanhassen-Chaska May 17. She finished with 12 saves.

Paige Jones The Edina High girls lacrosse star scored eight goals May 17 as the Hornets topped ChanhassenChaska 17-7 in a non-conference match.

Measuring improvement

Hornets take on new role in Lake golf race

Early in the 2011 girls lacrosse season, Edina was outclassed in a 16-7 loss to Eden Prairie. The Hornets didn’t dwell on their performance in that match, and when the teams met for a second time, Eden Prairie won by only two goals, 14-12. Edina is one of the highest-scoring teams in the state and comes at its opponents with numerous scoring options. Paige Jones, a senior attacker, was option No. 1 May 17 when the Hornets routed Chanhassen-Chaska 17-7 in a nonconference match. She finished with eight goals. Teammate Madeline Rodriguez added four goals.

Edina can spoil it for Wayzata Thursday BY JOHN SHERMAN • SUN NEWSPAPERS Wayzata High is one win from winning the Lake Conference boys golf title, but it won’t be a formality. The Trojans can finish ahead of Eden Prairie if they win a dual match against Edina at 3:30 p.m. Thursday, May 26, at Minneapolis Golf Club. Regardless of whether Edina wins or loses Thursday, the Hornets will finish third in the Lake Conference for 2011. Edina is coming on strong late in the spring with four players scoring in the 70s during a recent loss to Eden Prairie. At Olympic Hills, the Hornets shot 309 for 18 holes with 76s from Dylan Rusk and Kevin Goerne, a 78 from Nick Weidner and a 79 from Nate Carlson. The Lake Conference champion is determined by a combination of the conference meet and dual-match results. Wayzata won the conference meet last week and had the individual conference champion, senior Tyler Lowenstein. Lowenstein shot 70 for 18 holes at Ridges at Sand Creek. Wayzata’s highest score among its four counters was 73. Dane Teuteberg was Edina’s leader. He shot one of his best rounds of the spring, tying for eighth place with 73. “A 285 [team score] is the best score I’ve seen at Ridges,” said Edina head coach Phil Finanger. “Wayzata and Eden Prairie might be the two best teams in the state.” In addition to playing in the conference meet, Edina topped Hopkins 210219 in a dual match at Oak Ridge Country Club last week. Rusk and Weidner were Edina’s coleaders as they shot 50s in a par-46, 12hole match. Goerne and Teuteberg finished with 55s. Next for Edina is the Class 3A, Section 6 tournament Tuesday, May 31, and Wednesday, June 1, at Ridges at Sand Creek. First-round play will begin at 8:30 a.m. on the 31st.

Potts, Inde pace Hornets with first-place finishes BY JOHN SHERMAN • SUN NEWSPAPERS Keagan Potts and Aldis Inde gave Edina High boys track and field fans reason to cheer during the Lake Conference meet May 17 at Hopkins High Stadium. Potts won the pole vault with a seasonbest height of 12 feet, 8 inches while Inde won the 3,200-meter run in 9 minutes, 37.95 seconds. “Keagan put in a good week of work after finishing second in the vault at True Team,” said Edina High coach Dave Boone. “And he had a personal record today. At the beginning of the season, his goal was to vault 13 feet, and he’s almost there. “Keagan is a hard, hard worker, and he’s always willing when I need someone to fill in on a relay. He’s the perfect, coachable kid.” Inde is also coachable as well as very driven, Boone said. “Our distance coaches are tremen-

dous,” said Boone, “and we are seeing some really good performances.” Incredibly, Edina had six of the top eight finishers in the 3,200 at the conference meet with Inde first, Bjorn Thompson third, Will Burke fourth, Joey O’Connell sixth, Kyle Wagener seventh and Matt Lumbar eighth. The other highlight for the Hornets was Sam Leese’s second place in the 800. He had a time of 1:56.22, which was less than a second off the pace set by Minnetonka’s Christian Skaret. Edina sorely missed All-State sprinter Devin Crawford-Tufts, who was nursing a strained hamstring during the conference meet. Wayzata won the meet, Minnetonka was second and Hopkins and Eden Prairie placed third and fourth. “With Devin healthy, we could have finished third instead of fifth,” said Boone. “He had a good therapy session the other day and is getting healthier.”

Hopkins High’s girls track and field team won a suspenseful state Class 3A True Team title May 20 at Stillwater High School. The Royals needed a win in the last event, the 4x400-meter relay, to edge twotime defending state champion Mounds View, 877-874.5. Hopkins was dominant on the track, winning 10 of the 12 running events with leadership from Taylor Anderson, Bridget Sweeney, Mary Tanoe and Mariah Witt. Mounds View responded by dominating the field events. When it was all over the margin was one of the closest in girls True Team history. The boys True Team title also came down to the final race, and Rosemount edged Eden Prairie for the title, 851-827.

Hopkins homer spree During the 2009 girls fastpitch softball season, the Hopkins High girls team hit two home runs. They had 10 last season. In an incredible power surge this spring, the Royals had 21 homers going into the Class 3A, Section 6 playoffs, which opened May 23. “When we beat Wayzata 10-8 last week, Hayley Nybo hit two home runs, and one of them looked like it was going to the moon,” said Hopkins head coach Anne Campbell. Nybo, a senior catcher, leads the Royals with eight homers while second baseman Abby Whritenour has five and ninth-grader Lauren Feagler has four. Bianca Peterson and Maddie Bauer each have two home runs. How come many teams, not only Hopkins, are hitting more home runs this season? “Ever since they moved the pitching rubber back three feet [from 40 to 43], no lead is safe anymore,” said Campbell. “We were ahead of Wayzata 10-0, and then they hit three home runs, one of which was a grand slam.” – COMPILED BY JOHN SHERMAN
