Edina police warn against replica weapons Airsoft guns popular among youth illegal to shoot, carry
BY KATIE MINTZ • SUN NEWSPAPERS A truck pulled into the driveway of Lloyd Flynn’s Edina home Thursday afternoon, Aug. 11. “Oh man. Man, oh man, oh man,” Flynn said, greeting its passenger in an embrace. “You son of a gun, how are ya?” The last time 2nd Lt. Flynn, a pilot, was that close to his gunner, Cpl. Dan Williams of Aberdeen, Wash., was 66 years ago. The Marines flew together feet apart in a single-engine airplane over the South Pacific for nearly a year during World War II. The meeting arranged by his son Bruce Williams of Golden, Colo., was years in the making. The veterans reconnected by mail about eight years ago and write regularly. Meant to be a surprise for his dad, his cover was blown when they continued east after visiting friends in Wyoming. “He said ‘I may be 88 but I’m not stupid,’” Bruce Williams said. When Flynn and Dan Williams met, they were both 21. Flynn, who grew up in south Minneapolis, said he always wanted to be a pilot. He enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps in 1942.

BY KATIE MINTZ • SUN NEWSPAPERS The plastic pellets they shoot are mostly harmless, but Edina police say Airsoft guns present a real danger in the city. After receiving a handful of calls this summer about youth carrying replica firearms to parks and wooded areas to play, police are reminding residents their use is illegal. “We see enough of it that it’s a concern to us. One mistake would be one time too many,” said Edina Police Sgt. Phil Larsen, who fears GUNS: TO PAGE 8

An Edina mortgage broker has pleaded guilty for his role in a $20 million mortgage fraud scheme involving 57 properties. Derrick Ivan Lance, 40, pleaded guilty to one count of conspiracy to commit wire fraud, Wednesday, Aug. 10, in federal court. According to the U.S. Attorney’s Office, between 2004 and 2007, Lance allegedly conspired with others to obtain mortgage loan proceeds based on fraudulent documentation. Lance’s coconspirators identified residential properties available for purchase and recruited buyers for those properties. Two of the co-conspirators allegedly told buyers they would receive kickbacks after the property transactions closed, and that they could put those payments toward the mortgages or use them to improve the properties. Lance admitted to using his licensed
mortgage brokerage and his position within that brokerage to help prepare and submit false mortgage loan applications, which misrepresented the buyers’ true financial situation. Based on those fraudulent documents, loans were approved and disbursed by wire transfer into the accounts of various title companies. Lance and his co-conspirators then allegedly caused those title companies to disburse a portion of the proceeds from each transaction into bank accounts not associated with the property buyers, the purpose being to conceal the undisclosed kickbacks. Lance received approximately $200,000 for assisting buyers to secure mortgage loan funding for 26 properties. He faces a potential maximum penalty of 20 years in prison. United States District Court Judge Joan Ericksen will determine his sentence at a future hearing. On June 27, Roger Bill Hanks of Coon Rapids also pleaded guilty to one count of conspiracy to commit wire fraud in connection to the scam.

Edina teen makes most of Moroccan adventure Peter Nash studied Arabic abroad this summer through U.S. government program BY KATIE MINTZ • SUN NEWSPAPERS A recent Edina High School graduate took home more than a grasp of a foreign language from studies abroad this summer. Peter Nash, 18, said the six weeks he spent in Morocco learning Arabic were life changing. “The experience in Morocco really opened my eyes to the world,” Nash said after returning in late July. “The month and half were the best times in my life.” Nash traveled to the North African country through the federal government’s National Security Language Initiative for Youth program, which provides merit-based scholarships to U.S. high school students and recent graduates interested in learning less-commonly studied foreign languages. The multi-agency initiative led by the State Department was launched in January 2006 to improve Americans’ ability to engage with people from around the world. Nash said Moroccans, who saw him as a person first and an American second, made it easy for him to make meaningful
connections. “People are people. They live in extremely different circumstances but they value the same thing we do – family, community,” he said. Nash learned about the program from his older sisters, twins Claire and Julia, 23, both of whom studied abroad in Egypt during college and can speak a few Arabic dialects. Arabic, which Nash called a beautiful language, was an easy choice. The National Security Language Initiative for Youth program also offers summer and academic-year programs in countries where Mandarin Chinese, Hindi, Korean, Persian, Russian and Turkish are spoken. Dad Geoffrey Nash said he and mom Camille Nash were not worried about sending him to Morocco, a largely peaceful country. “There is so much you can learn about culture and awareness of the world through the window of another language,” he said. Nash departed Edina in mid-June. Immediately after arriving in Casablanca, students with some Arabic experience took a proficiency test. Nash, who attended one class in Arabic script at the Islamic Center of Minnesota last summer, could not yet read or write the characters. The next day he met his host family in

The organization supports the Republican Party and its principles by making their voice heard to the politicians. “We foster our people to contact the politicians on how we feel,” Maginnis said. The Republican Seniors of Minnesota are not studying up on issues for themselves, but they are looking into the issues for their children and grandchildren because it’s the next generation that will be affected by policy changes, according to Maginnis. At the Aug. 2 meeting, KTLK-100.3 FM morning co-host Bob Davis spoke to the group about how important it is to read the news versus watching it on television. “Turn off the TV and pick up a paper,” Davis said. A few thoughts on correcting errors Depending on where you are reading this, you may have seen a small box on the lower right-hand corner of this page in the last few weeks. You might not have noticed it, but I can assure you it was there, emblazoned with black letters spelling an ominous word to many journalists: “Correction.” Brrreeeggh. I just got the shivers. Nah, I'm kidding. We work in an industry that is ideally aimed at facts. And we like to get them right. No matter what. There is a school of thought in the media community that
DANIEL CALLAHAN Edina Sun-Current Managing Editor
says you shouldn’t publish corrections unless absolutely necessary to avoid hurting the publication’s credibility. The idea is that by pointing out the mistakes, readers will see how often you’re getting things wrong and stop reading your paper. So why do we publish corrections? Why do we go out of
our way to point out our inaccuracies? Because we don’t believe printing corrections diminishes our credibility, but rather enhances it. I am well aware that media hasn’t been seen in the best light in the last few decades. There still is that nasty persisting stereotype of the unethical reporter. In some newsrooms, the theme is “get the paper out,” not necessarily “get the paper out right.” Here at the Sun-Current, we aim higher. Let me be clear, we endeavor to get the facts right the first time. Frankly, I’m rather proud of the staff here; we don’t often
LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Bricks beautiful, but not asphalt patches
brick-trimmed intersections in the Country Club neighborhood have not? Dan Starkey Edina
To the editor: Edina had such a great idea when the decision was made to beautify the city’s downtown sidewalks with brick pavers. It’s a quaint and beautiful idea – and bricks are (usually) long lasting. But after only a single season, we noticed that there were broken bricks all over the place. And, the replacement bricks are not bricks at all, but coarse asphalt. I’m sure that by now everyone has begun to notice the growing number of ugly black rectangles all over downtown Edina. The downtown sidewalks are looking more and more tacky with each passing month. Questions: Who thinks it’s a good idea to replace a brick with asphalt? Why did the downtown-area bricks deteriorate immediately, while the
Berger announces school board campaign To the editor: My name is Jason Berger and I’m running for one of the three open spots on the Edina School Board this Nov. 8. My wife and I are both products of the public school system and we moved our family to Edina eight years ago to be a part of a world-class school district. I’m motivated to serve our district because of the services received by our daughter Sunni in the Special Education program at Cornelia Elementary School. My wife and I have experienced first-hand the dedication and quality of Edina’s teachers and paraprofessionals. Like everyone else, my wife
get things wrong. But when we do err, it’s simply irresponsible for us not to issue a correction. After all, the goal for any newspaper is to provide you, the reader, with factual information. When that information is wrong — something as small as an improperly labeled photo caption or as major as a misspelling of a name — it is our duty to provide you with the correct information as quickly as possible. We want to earn and maintain your trust. By pointing out where we’ve had issues, we hope you’ll see we value precision above all else.
Share your news with our readers and I are concerned about the financial situation both at the state and federal levels. The gap in obligations we have made and the income we can expect to receive are now being measured in the trillions of dollars, a burden that will affect our children now and in the future. It is clear that this will result in higher taxes and reduced spending at all levels, including here in Edina. With 14 years of experience as a safety engineer in the insurance industry, with clients that include school districts, I know how schools manage their risks and work towards higher productivity, better quality, and lower costs. I want to be a part of the school board to help ensure we can meet our challenges without sacrificing our children’s opportunities. And together, we can keep Edina as a leader in education. Guns FROM PAGE 1 threatened drivers, homeowners or even police could take adverse action. “For kids to be carrying pistols and rifles that look strikingly similar to real firearms is a risk,” he said. A number of parents and youth in the community believe the guns are OK to carry and shoot in city limits as long as they have brightly colored tips on the barrel, Larsen said, but that is not the case. “Our city ordinance is really clear about these not being discharged anywhere in the city,” police spokeswoman
In the Community, With the Community, For the Community
Molly Anderson said. Edina city code prohibits the use of firearms, including “any rifle, gun, pistol, air rifle, BB gun, pellet gun, paint pellet gun, or other weapon,” in the city without a written permit. That applies to both public and private property. In addition, the code prohibits transportation or possession of firearms of any type outdoors unless unloaded and cased. Larsen responded to an incident Friday afternoon, July 29, near Grand View Park Cemetery in northwest Edina. Residents in the area reported a group of nine boys with guns wearing camouflage gear. The juveniles, most from neighboring Hopkins, had not pointed the weapons at
any people or vehicles. They were cooperative and let off with warnings, Larsen said, but there could be greater consequences. A few years ago Larsen did cite a group of juveniles for violation of the city code, a misdemeanor offense. They were pointing replica weapons at cars on Ridgeview Avenue, he said. It is also a felony under state law to brandish a replica firearm or BB gun in a threatening manner that “causes or attempts to cause terror in another person” or “acts in reckless disregard of the risk of causing terror in another person.”

Reunion FROM PAGE 1 Dan Williams also hoped to be a pilot and signed up for an aviation program for enlisted soldiers after entering active duty the same year. The program was discontinued and he entered bombardier and gunnery school instead. In the fall of 1943, they were stationed together as part of Marine Scout Bombing Squadron 151. “I was certainly glad that Dan was

my gunner,” Flynn said. “If we ever got in a tight spot, and we never did, I would be glad he was with me.” Sitting on Flynn’s back porch in the Morningside neighborhood, they reminisced over perhaps their most important assignment. In June 1944 they were told to prepare for a highly secret mission. They flew from their base to another Pacific island for a meeting with “an awful lot of gold braid,” Dan Williams said. A U.S. Navy captain handed them a three-foot aluminum tube and told them it was to be dropped to a destroyer escort ship. “It had ribbons on it. It was decorat-

ed up like a Christmas tree,” Williams said. They had strict orders that if they could not make the proper contact, the tube was to go to bottom of the lagoon – and that they should go with it if necessary. The tube held the invasion instructions for the Mariana Islands of Guam, Tinian and Saipan, Williams said. Chanhassen resident Bob Flynn, one of five kids, said he never heard his father speak much about the war growing up. He learned a lot reading Dan Williams’ memoir, which is dedicated to his father, calling him “one of the good ones.” “There are a couple hair-raising adventures they went on,” he said. On one of a handful of combat missions, the 1,000 pounds of explosives strapped to their plane did not drop during an air strike. They had to climb back up to do the dive again without the rest of their squadron. “The second time we were all by ourselves,” Williams said. “You know you’re not going to get any help.” But no matter what the situation, he said he always knew Lloyd Flynn would pull them out. “I felt immediately he was completely competent, No. 1. No. 2, I never saw any indication he came unglued over any minor two-bit deals,” Dan Williams said. His rotation concluded in November 1944 and he was sent back to the United States. He worked as a timber cruiser and land surveyor for many years in Washington state. His two sons Bruce and Dave were U.S. Marine Corps pilots. “My love of flying came from his
experience in World War II. There was no doubt in my mind I was going to be a Marine aviator,” said Bruce Williams, whose son will also enter Marine pilot school next year. Lloyd Flynn had five kids and worked 45 years in cemetery and funeral services before retiring. His grandson Aaron Flynn, also a Marine, did tours in Iraq and Afghanistan. Dan and Bruce Williams planned to stay with Lloyd Flynn for five days before heading back west. The Edina resident aid he had been looking forward to their visit. “I was so thrilled, so excited. When Bruce called I said it was going to be emotional and it was,” Flynn said. “It’s hard to believe they’re here.”

Edina police catch man stealing from cars in the act K-9 Diesel tracks down runaway juvenile BY KATIE MINTZ • SUN NEWSPAPERS A keen eye and nose from Edina Police Officer Mike Seeger and K-9 partner Diesel helped nab a thief and return a runaway to her home early Monday morning, Aug. 8. The pair was patrolling near 60th Street and Zenith Avenue in Edina around 1:30 a.m. when Seeger spotted four people walking west on 60th Street. They told Seeger they were on their way home to Richfield. “They seemed like normal people, smoking cigarettes out for a walk,” he said. Seeger then noticed a vehicle’s dome light on and partially ajar door – signs of a car break-in – on Zenith Avenue. “When I looked up they had turned down Zenith, which was the not the direction they told me they were going, and were about three blocks away from me,” Seeger said. As he drove toward them, a female juvenile in the group ran off. Seeger spoke with the three adult males. A 20year-old Richfield man admitted he had entered about four to six vehicles in the area. “He said, ‘I have stolen stuff in my pockets,’” Seeger said. The items included sunglasses, a credit card,
tools and about $9 in change, all totaling less than $500. “During the interview he stated he tried about 20 vehicles but only went in vehicles that were unlocked,” Seeger said. “He took whatever he could grab.” The man was arrested for possession of stolen property, tampering with automobiles and possession of drug paraphernalia. The two other males, ages 19 and 20, of Richfield were not arrested. Seeger and Diesel were able to track the 16year-old Richfield girl through a few back and front yards and found her hiding underneath an evergreen bush. Seeger said she had been reported as a runaway for more than a week. She was cited for curfew violation. “I’m just happy Diesel was able to find the juvenile. Now she’s back safe with her family,” he said. Seeger said the area with older homes and single-car garages is prime for thefts from automobiles because many vehicles are parked on the street overnight. The Edina Police Department recommends residents park in well-lit areas or install motion-detecting lights. “We encourage people to take all of their valuables out of their vehicles including their garage door opener and to lock their vehicle,” said police spokeswoman Molly Anderson.

Right Way Painting Solutions After one of the most brutal winters we have encountered in the past 30 years, we have all found things that need repair or replacement on our homes. Many of us have needed to put off work being done to our homes do to economic hard times. Many of us also put off projects to save money in case things got worse. Our home values have gone down which makes it hard to even think about selling our homes. The reality is that we have to keep our property in good shape to maintain our values. Painting the exterior of our homes is by far the best value to preserving our wood surfaces and windows. We can also dramatically change the appearance of the inside of our homes by updating colors. Painting woodwork is a very affordable option compared to replacing old trim around our homes. In many older homes our windows are still good, but the old stain and varnish are not holding up any more. You can save thousands of dollars by painting these windows verses replacing windows. Updating your
basement family room can also be as easy as painting the paneling. I’m Paul Moore from Rightway Painting Solutions. I’ve been in the painting business for over 20 years. Being a former Shop Teacher, I have a good background in finishing and wood replacement. We do both residential and commercial painting. We do work for several Town Home Associations, Nursing Homes and Residential Properties. We give our customers great value by being able to not just paint. We replace or repair wood, repair and reglaze older windows and reside areas that need replacement. We also repair decks and re stain decks. On the inside we repair walls, remove wallpaper, enamel wood work and paint paneling. We offer a 2 year labor warrantee on our labor, provide references and we would be happy to give you a free estimate. For all of your painting needs give us a call at 612-8392239.
geries and radiation, and has been cancerfree ever since. A friend convinced her to do her first walk in 2008. She was a six-year survivor at the time. On the route she met a six-month survivor. The other woman had just finished chemotherapy and couldn’t make the entire trip. Kriha met her at the end and together they entered the closing ceremony. Kriha said she realized then how lucky she was to be alive. “It was the first time I acknowledged myself as a survivor,” she said. This year she will walk with her stepdaughter Brianna Dehncke, 22, who grew up in New Hope and now lives and goes to school in Duluth. Dehncke recently lost her mother and a close family friend to lung cancer. Kriha said the support provided to survivors, their families and friends at cheering stations dotting the route and by fellow walkers is amazing. Her favorite part is meeting other survivors and sharing hope. “The cheering stations make it a community event instead of a personal journey,” she said. “You have this whole group of people showing you the love you need to keep going.” For a list of cheering stations and additional information, visit The3Day.org. Above, Peter Nash said the town of Chefchaoen, often called the blue city in Morocco for its primarily blue structures, is one of the most beautiful places he’s visited. Nash was in Morocco to learn the Arabic language. At left, Nash of Edina visits the city of Fes during his six-week stay in Morocco this summer. The 18-year-old made the journey on a government scholarship to study the Arabic language.

Morocco’s capital Rabat, where he stayed for most of the program. In five hours that night, the family helped him learn half of the Arabic alphabet. “They were one of the best parts about it,” said Nash, who went by Boutros in Morocco. “From the first day they welcomed me as a son.” A former Normandale Elementary French Immersion School student and fluent French speaker, he gave a taxi driver directions to school the next day in French. France had a protectorate over Morocco for 44 years before Morocco gained independence in 1956. French is still commonly spoken there. After that, Nash said he tried to strict-
ly use Arabic. The teacher spoke only Arabic to the 11 students in his class. “For a week and a half I didn’t know a word he was saying,” Nash said. Through the intensive program, Nash said he can now speak and read both Modern Standard Arabic and the Moroccan dialect Darija. The two forms of Arabic are as different as French and Spanish, he said. In a typical day, he woke at 7 a.m. before his host family, ate breakfast and took a cab to school. He studied for a couple hours after school before what he called “pre-dinner” around 5 p.m. He’d study some more and chat with his host brother, a 22-year-old studying film at a Rabat university. The family ate another dinner around 10 p.m. Food is a major part of culture, said NASH: TO NEXT PAGE

Nash FROM PREVIOUS PAGE Nash, who received several invitations to meals or tea with Moroccans. “They would express how much they liked you by giving you food,” he said. Nash was in Rabat for most of the program, but also traveled to Marrakech, Fes, coastal Essaouira and Chefchaouen, known as the blue city for its primarily blue structures. He said he enjoyed banter with the people of Morocco. In Chefchaouen, he’d ask for directions and be told to turn left at the blue door. “You’d have to ask which one,” he said. At the souk, or large outdoor marketplace, in Rabat it was nearly a requirement to bargain. In the course of the discussion, he’d tell the vendor he was an American student, and learn about the
vendor’s life too. “It really got you connected with people,” Nash said. “When you’d pass by the next day, they’d say ‘Ahh Boutros, how’s it going?’” Since returning, Nash found a café in Minneapolis where he can get a cup of Moroccan mint tea and speak with the shop owner in the Darija dialect. He also practices Modern Standard Arabic with his sisters. Nash will attend Lawrence University in Appleton, Wis., this fall. He is enrolled in an Arabic class there. He hasn’t yet decided on a major, but said he is interested in international relations, French and biology. His dream job is to be a United States ambassador overseas. While in Morocco, he interviewed its current U.S. Ambassador Samuel Kaplan, a Minneapolis attorney. Nash encourages others to apply for the program. In its first two years, 330
American students ages 15 and up studied Mandarin and Arabic abroad. For the 2011-2012 year, which began this summer, about 670 scholarships were awarded by the National Security Language Initiative for Youth. Loren Kupferschmid with international education nonprofit American Councils, the primary administrator of the program grant, said it helps inspire lifelong learning for many students. “We hear back from a lot of students who decided to continue studying the language in college. We have heard of students going back to their host country to pursue internships,” Kupferschmid said. “There are really fantastic results.” For more information about the National Security Language Initiative for Youth, visit nsliforyouth.org. Applications for summer 2012 and the 2012-2013 academic year will be made available in September.

Haddox hosts finals Bloomington’s Haddox Field is the site of the final rounds of the state Class A amateur baseball tournament this weekend. There will be a 7 p.m. game Friday, Aug. 19, at Haddox Field in Valley View Park. Competition continues at noon and 3 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 20, in the double-elimination tourney. The tournament winds down with a 1 p.m. game Sunday, Aug. 21. If necessary, a final game to decide the tournament champion would take place at 4 p.m. Defending state champion Minnetonka came into the tournament as the favorite led by shortstop Joe Shallenberger and center fielder Chris Urbain. Two other Riverview League teams were entered in the tourney. The Bloomington Bandits will rely on two key pitchers, Josh Gist and Cliff Christopherson, along with hot-hitting Sam Baltes (.371, 26 RBI) and Kyle Bassamore (.355, 26 RBI). St. Louis Park will try to duplicate its state title feat of 2008. Pitcher Gabe Eikum was the tournament’s most valuable player that year and is still the ace of the Park staff. Matt Paulsen provided many key hits for Park in the Riverview League playoffs.
Canterbury stakes races Canterbury Park has recovered well by drawing several impressive crowds to the Shakopee racing facility after being a victim of the state’s shutdown for three weeks in July. About 15,500 spectators attended the Extreme Race Day event Aug. 6. The track has also had a crowd of more than 9,000 in recent weeks. More metro-area racing fans are expected to flock to Canterbury Park this weekend for several big stakes races. On Sunday, Aug. 21, there will be a HBPA Sprint Stakes race covering six furlongs. Purse is $25,000. Another stakes race is the Northern Plains Stallion Futurity 350-yard quarter horse race with a purse of $10,000. Post time is 1:30 p.m. One of the track’s most popular nights has been Thursday’s Buck Night. Admission, regular programs, hot dogs, Pepsi and nachos and cheese are all priced at $1. Love Handles keep their grip on 35 & Over softball trophy Champions take down Federated Insurance and the Mild Boys BY JOHN SHERMAN • SUN NEWSPAPERS When it comes to men’s slowpitch softball in Edina, the Love Handles of the 35 & Over Rec League are known as the “Franchise Team.” They won the league playoffs for the sixth straight year by sweeping two opponents Aug. 10 at VanValkenburg Park. In the two semifinal games, the Love Handles closed the books on Federated Insurance 14-8 and the Mild Boys defeated the Boys of Summer 13-7. The Love Handles then used the long ball to beat the Mild Boys 18-8 in the finals.
Jason “Turbo” Sirek was hot at the plate all night for the Love Handles. He smashed a home run in the first inning against Federated Insurance to tie the score 2-2. He added three more hits before the game ended. In the finals against the Mild Boys, Sirek’s inside-the-park homer in the first inning helped the Love Handles take a 7-3 lead. He later drilled a conventional homer over the outfield wall. “We have the right chemistry on this team,” said Sirek. “I’ll play for them as long as they’ll have me.” After Sirek hit the inside-the-park homer, he was ribbed by the Mild Boys, who demanded to see a copy of his birth certificate. “Nobody over 35 can run that fast,” one LOVE HANDLES: TO NEXT PAGE

Mild Boy remarked. “There’s an age limit, but what about a speed limit?” one fan chimed in. Sirek is legal for the 35 & Over league. In fact, he’s 38 and already a four-year veteran with the Love Handles. Player/coach Rick LaVercombe suffered a leg injury running to first base early in the game, but continued to play and was all smiles after the Love Handles won. LaVercombe and Bill Bausman joined Sirek as the Love Handles’ home-run hitters in the title game. Chris Garvin also hit a homer, but was called out because of the league’s three-home-run-per-game limit. “Wouldn’t you know it,” said Garvin. “I hit that one too well.” It was the only out the left-center fielder made all night as he went 7-for-8 in the two games. LaVercombe said this year’s playoff title is typical of the way the Love Handles have done it in the past. They hit a bump in the road with a regular-season loss to the Bruce Avenue All-Stars, but in the playoffs they were unbeatable, finishing the year 12-1 overall. “We’re a pretty good defensive team that doesn’t give away a lot of outs,” said LaVercombe. “One thing that’s overlooked in slowpitch is the importance of pitching. We have Pat McGovern, and he’s one of the best. He can throw a strike anytime he wants to.” The Mild Boys reached the finals behind a good pitcher of their own, Dennis Anderson. Steve Bunde homered for the Mild Boys in the title game and outfielder Anthony Kennedy was tough, offensively and defensively. Erik Hendrikson was the star for the Mild Boys in their win over the Boys of Summer, hitting two home runs. “It was fun playing for the league championship,” said Mild Boys player/coach Steve Black, a 1982 Edina High graduate. “We had a good season. Including playoffs, our record was 9-5.” Earlier in their softball careers, the Mild Boys were known as the Wild Boys. “But when we made it to 35 & Over, Mild Boys seemed more appropriate,” said Black. “Give the Mild Boys credit,” said Love Handles’ third baseman David Mielke. “I thought we’d be seeing Kevin Lynch and that Boys of Summer bunch in the finals, but the Mild Boys knocked them out. “They scored three runs against us in the top of the first inning, but we bounced back with seven in the bottom half and took the wind out of their sails.”

Edina fans wonder, ‘Who was that masked man? BY JOHN SHERMAN • SUN NEWSPAPERS Remember the Lone Ranger comics and TV show from years past? The daring and resourceful masked rider of the plains dispatched old-west bad guys with his fast fists, and, if necessary, his quick pistol. There was always a moral to the story, too. In the Edina Monday Night Rec Softball League playoffs last week, a new masked man emerged as a hero for the Techware Turbos. Matt Munson, who wears a protective facemask in the field, pitched a 15-0 shutout over the TC Bombers in the first round at VanValkenburg Park. In the quarterfinals, with a much tougher challenge, he and his teammates edged Jimmy John’s Subs, 19-18. Techware made an impressive defensive play to end the game against Jimmy John’s. Shortstop Derek Willis dove left to flag down a hard grounder. From his knees he threw to second baseman Eric Loichle for the game-ending force play. It was one of those plays that was difficult at both ends. Taking a throw like that on the run required skill on Loichle’s part. Willis’ diving save was spectacular. “At first glance, I thought it was a sure base hit,” said Munson after the game. “Then I saw Derek dive and come up with it.” Techware is one of the perennial powers in the Edina Monday Night Rec League. The Turbos won the playoffs two years ago and finished second to Old Chicago last season. “We always shoot for the final four, and
we’re there for the third year in a row,” said team founder and player/manager Steve Nelson, a 1991 Edina High graduate. Nelson said Techware has always been a good team that became even better when Munson signed on as the starting pitcher four years ago. “It was a gift when Matt came to play for us,” said Nelson. “He’s a great pitcher.” Munson uses a variety of fakes and jukes in the pitchers’ circle, which make it hard for opponents to pick up the ball. As for the mask, he likes the protection. “I don’t want to wind up in the emergency room with missing teeth,” he said. “You see how fast that ball comes off the bat.” While Munson’s pitching helped Techware in the Aug. 8 games, the Turbos had their share of big hits. Willis, Noel Danielson and Matt Svidron hit home runs against Jimmy John’s. “Jimmy John’s had some hard-hit balls, too,” said Nelson. One of those hard hits was a home run by first baseman Tim Sjoquist. Jimmy John’s won its playoff opener 98 over Los Lobos when Craig Oestreich singled home the game-winner in the bottom of the seventh inning. Old Chicago, which had a 17-1-2 regular-season record to edge Champps for the title, is still in the playoffs following a 12-9 win over the Plungers. Holding the wild card are the Decoys, a scrappy team that advanced to the final four with a 12-11 win over the Toasted Boaters. The semifinals were in progress Aug. 15 as this edition went to press.

Old Chicago powers its way into softball semis Mammoth homer by Martinson sets tone BY JOHN SHERMAN SUN NEWSPAPERS

Old Chicago, which won the regular-season title in the Edina Monday Night Rec Softball League, is hot on the trail of its second consecutive playoff championship. Manager Gordy Lundin watched his team move a step closer in a 12-9 quarterfinal victory over the Plungers Aug. 8 at VanValkenburg Park. While there were a number of key hits by the winners, one stood out. Derek Martinson blasted a ball deep into the brush up the hill from Field 1. The fence is 300 feet from home plate and his well-hit shot cleared it by almost 100 feet. Power hitting is the trademark of Old Chicago. “Only one park in America can contain us – and that’s Yellowstone,” said Martinson. Martinson, who has hit 20 homers in league play this summer, is not the only big bopper in
the Old Chicago lineup. Heath Johnson got into the act in Monday’s win with a big home run. One of the problems Old Chicago has had this season is that it hits too many home runs. Teams in the Monday Night league are limited to three home runs a game, and there have been times when Old Chicago’s “accidental” homers have cost the team outs. Whenever he hits a home run, whether it is legal or not, Martinson says, “Ooop.” So if you hear that sound around playoff time, that means he’s doing exactly what he came to do. “We have been together seven or eight years,” said Lundin. “We won the championship last year and finished second to Techware the year before. I’d have to say we’re having our best year in a long time. Our only loss was to the Web Gems.” While the big hitters stood out for Old Chicago in the Aug. 8 win, shortstop Ben Waltman came up with the biggest plays. “Ben is super quick,” said Martinson. “He makes a lot of great plays.”
Team Braemar rises to the top in state junior golf tourney Team Braemar junior golf coach Dick Barrett has experience on his side, but he has been around long enough to know that coaching alone is not enough to win a state title. “It’s not me, it’s them,” he said after his team repeated as the state junior boys champion recently. Barrett, the godfather of junior golf in Edina, said coaching has actually become easier over the years. This is his 41st season as Braemar’s coach. “When you have guys who can swing, you’ll win,” he said. Barrett definitely had the right crew together for this year’s state tourney, which was played at Pokegema Golf
JOHN SHERMAN Edina Sun-Current Sports Editor Course in Grand Rapids. Matt Cichoski, who plays high school golf for St. Louis Park, was the medalist with scores of 70 and 74 for the twoday event. Nick Weidner, who plays for Edina High, shot 73 and 76 while Brett Draxler of Benilde-St. Margaret’s had rounds of 76 and 74. Bloomington Jefferson’s Nick Nielsen rounded out Team Braemar’s starting foursome with a 78 and an 81.
“We won the championship by 13 strokes,” said Barrett. “To get to state, we had to win a tough district that includes Minikahda, Oak Ridge, Interlachen, Meadowbrook and Edina Country Club.” Those are some great golf courses, and they all have great players. But Barrett, who turned 78 on June 3, has the magic touch. “We have a strong group of junior boys,” he said. “Unfortunately, we can only play four of them. I have been working with a group of 10. The other six are like our farm club.” Barrett said one of the advantages of coaching at Braemar is that the pros are willing to pitch in and help the
young golfers. “Just before the state tournament, Joe Greupner gave Matt Cichoski a lesson,” said Barrett. “Then Matt went out and shot a 1-under 70 the first day.” Barrett also works with the junior girls team at Edina, and he is hoping they will be in the winners’ circle someday soon. Working with young golfers keeps Barrett young and helps him give back to the game he loves.
Softball dynasty? I had the opportunity to watch the Love Handles win their sixth consecutive Edina 35 & Over Rec Softball League title last week at VanValkenburg Park.
The Mild Boys came out swinging and took a 3-0 lead over the Love Handles in the top of the first inning, but the champs took over from there, scoring seven in the bottom of the first on the way to an 18-8 win. If the league had selected an MVP, it probably would have been Jason Sirek of the Love Handles, who made big plays at shortstop and also hit two homers in the championship game. Although there are other good teams in the league – the Mild Boys, the Bruce Avenue All-Stars, Federated Insurance and the Boys of Summer to name a few – the Love Handles will still be the team to beat in 2012.

Women with Low Thyroid Many people live their lives suffering from low thyroid symptoms. This is especially true for females. Thyroid hormones control all your metabolism, and when thyroid hormones are low they cause all the cells in your body and mind to slow down. These symptoms include fatigue, weight gain, mood swings, sweet cravings, depression, sluggish thinking, thinning hair or hair loss, and cold hands and feet. For some people digestive problems like constipation and acid indigestion may signal low thyroid. Even when taking thyroid medication, many people continue to suffer from the symptoms of having low thyroid. Some people are even told their lab tests are normal but still continue to endure the symptoms of low thyroid. However, there can be a solution for symptoms from low thyroid! Dr. Phil Gilman DC FMA FASBE, a published thyroid researcher and chiropractor, is holding a seminar to discuss low thyroid symptoms. His research shows that while blood tests are valuable in evaluating thyroid dysfunction, often the basic tests are inadequate in finding the underlying causes of low thyroid. For example Dr. Gilman’s published research showed that liver func-
tion affects low thyroid. This research also showed that low thyroid persons have a observable posture and testable muscle weakness. There are six patterns of thyroid dysfunction and only one of them responds well to thyroid medication. That is why so many have been disappointed in their results. During the seminar Dr. Gilman will reveal the number one cause of low thyroid in the United States, why many women taking replacement hormones won’t get better, six patterns to thyroid problems, and why doctor’s don’t run complete thyroid tests. He will also discuss the one food that is often involved in low thyroid and how to test for it. In addition to exposing these truths about thyroid treatment, Dr. Gilman will also discuss natural solutions to help thyroid problems. Due to the high demand and sensitivity of this information, seating for Dr. Gilman’s private thyroid seminar is limited. It will be held on Tuesday, August 23rd at 7:00 PM at the Hampton Inn, 7740 Flying Cloud Drive, Eden Prairie. Please call 651-681-8199 to reserve a seat today!
