Edina officials are aiming for minimal spending increases next year. Edina City Council members weighed in on two scenarios for the 2012 property tax levy and general fund budget presented at a Tuesday, Aug. 16, work session. Council members, for the most part, supported a status quo option with a slight increase for employee contracts settled last year. Some said they would like to see reductions or reallocations in other parts of the budget to bring that number down. The council is expected to adopt a preliminary levy and budget Tuesday, Sept. 6, to meet the Sept. 15 deadline imposed by the state. The preliminary levy, once adopted, cannot be increased but can be decreased. “I feel pretty comfortable at the scenario one level,” which offered a 2.8 percent levy increase over the current year, Mayor Jim Hovland said. “Would I like it a little lower? His image of a red fox in snow-blanketed Pamela Park was selected in the new “Readers’ Choice” category. “Right when he looked up at me I took the picture,” said Roger, adding he was lucky to get the picture, and that both he and his friend could take home prizes in the friendly competition. For the first time this year, the city partnered with Edina Magazine, allowing photos to be submitted online and for

online voting in the “Readers’ Choice” category. “It turned out to be a fun interactive opportunity and the community really responded to it,” said Sarah Baumann, Edina Magazine editor at the Tuesday, Aug. 16, Edina City Council meeting where the winners were announced. For Edina, no price tag on sunrays or solar panels New City Hall solar energy project comes without bill BY KATIE MINTZ • SUN NEWSPAPERS Edina will spend as much on solar panels for City Hall as it does on the sunrays it receives – nothing. The Edina City Council voted unanimously Tuesday, Aug. 16, to move forward with a $200,000 solar photovoltaic system that will be paid for entirely with grants and energy rebates. The city expected to put in about $80,000 toward the project after the Edina Energy and Environment Commission received a Minnesota Local Government Renewable Energy grant to cover 40 percent of costs last year. But City Attorney Roger Knutson said the rate of return on the investment would still exceed financing terms, which is not permissible under state law. A new request for proposals was released this summer with slightly modified requirements and the new bids came in substantially lower than the previous bid.

Greg Ackerson with McKinstry, a consulting firm working with the city, said Bloomington-based tenKsolar selected for the project was also eligible for additional rebates as a Minnesota company, bringing the city’s net cost to zero. The 25-kilowatt system for the roof at City Hall will produce enough energy to power three average homes and reduce city energy costs by approximately $1,300 per year, he said. “Right from year one you’d be generating positive cash flow back to the taxpayers,” Ackerson said. Bill Glahn, a member of the Energy and Environment Commission’s energy working group, however, said he had concerns about the real value of the project. While there is no cost to the city, the grant – part of a federal program – is footed by all taxpayers, and the rebates provided by Xcel Energy are also likely passed on to customers in utility bills. He said the $200,000 project would not pay for itself over the life of the equipment. “It comes out as a net positive for the city. Unfortunately, there’s nobody in this whole process to look at the entire project from society’s standpoint,” he said.

The project was recommended to the city council by the Energy and Environment Commission. Commissioner Surya Iyer, who also serves on the energy working group, said it will help satisfy the city’s green goals and serve as an example to others. “This is a small but active step toward lowering the carbon footprint of this city building,” he said.

PACE program The Edina City Council also unanimously directed staff and the Energy and Environment Commission to develop a new financing mechanism for other renewable energy projects at its Aug. 16 meeting. The Property Assessed Clean Energy program, or PACE, allows residential and commercial properties to have the cost of improvements assessed to their property and paid alongside property taxes. This method improves the likelihood of loan repayment, which can in turn lower the cost of securing capital and make the return on investment more attractive. “It’s a way to stimulate to energy conservation programs by providing an alter-

nate funding vehicle for them,” City Manager Scott Neal said. The Minnesota Legislature authorized PACE in 2010. Former Sen. John Doll of Burnsville, who was chief author of the bill in the Senate, said Edina would be the first city to adopt the tool. Edina will set its own parameters, such as which methods of financing it will allow. For instance, under the statute, applicants can use a private third-party lender to finance the project, or the city can issue bonds. The PACE program proposal developed by staff and the commission will return to the city council at a later date for final review and approval. Doll said Edina is in a unique position. Rick Murphy with Grandview Tire and Auto in Edina approached the council at its Aug. 3 meeting and asked it to move forward with PACE. He said his company would like to install solar panels at their shop, 5415 70th St. W. “We have a project that’s already ready to roll with this program,” Doll said. “That’s a lot of times the stepping stone or stumbling block, getting the financing partner and the community linked up and we have that in place right now.”

The day the war came home It’s been a few months since my previous visit, but last week I found myself driving up to a church I’ve been very familiar with for years. From baptisms to confirmations to weddings — including my own — I’ve often been back to that same church to celebrate numerous joyful and happy occasions with family and friends. This was the first funeral. I cannot and will not claim a close friendship with the depart-

ed. To do so would be a disservice to his memory. At best, I can say we were childhood buddies. Over the past decade, I’ve been lucky enough to never have to go to one of these funerals.

But I can say with absolute certainty that, after 10 years, the wars our country is engaged in came home. I can’t pretend the conflicts overseas are just political maneuvering anymore; war means heroism and it means sacrifice. I know this is the point where I am supposed to make an argument for or against the use of military force in other countries. You, the readers, might

expect me to use this tragedy as an example of whatever “agenda” I might have. But, that’s just something I’m not going to do. This is a time to remember those who serve or who have served and honor them for that reason alone. Forget the politics, forget pushing for drawdowns or surges, and remember that those things mean people – people who are willing to stand up and serve their country regardless of the cost.

Our address was 4652 Vernon Ave., which was also known as Highway 100, or the beltline. In those days, Highway 100 was two lanes wide. Where Edinbrook Lane is now, it was all fields up to about 49th Street West. At night in the summer you could see fireflies light up the entire field.

A boys’ paradise In the summer we built “chugs,” a board with four wheels, and raced down Brookside Avenue. In the winter,

we had our sleds and did likewise. With good ice we could go almost to Division Street. We had a lot of fun on the creek, fishing and swimming in the summer and ice-skating in the winter. There are channels on either side of the cascade on Minnehaha Creek. My sisters and I learned to swim in the one closest to our house. From there we graduated to diving off the cascade itself. At one time we had a diving board rigged up on the front of it. In the winter we shoveled off the ice on the backside of the cascade. It made a very large rink and a lot of kids came there to play hockey and speed skate. I used to skate to school down to the mill pond, change to my shoes and after school skate until dinner time, as they always had a warming house and a flooded rink at the mill pond. It was great.

Building Sunnyslope The Sunnylope Road development was not complete at the end of World War II. After the war when the men came home, building commenced again. I watched them build those big beautiful homes. But before they could they had to put in the water and sewer lines. That whole area is sand and gravel and when they tried to dig the street up they had nothing but trouble. I watched as the big backhoes tried to dig down 10 feet or so and the ground just kept falling. They finally got it done by putting in shoring planks then laying the pipe and remove the shoring.

First jobs I used to carry water to the backhoe operators for 25 cents a quart from my house so they had a drink. When I got to be about

My mother used to sew pads in my shirt shoulders as I carried doubles – two golf bags. This kept the bags from tearing the skin off my shoulders. I had a regular bunch of customers along Sunnyside Road. In the summer and fall I would take care of their yards and in the winter would shovel their driveways. I

always had a few dollars to spend. I learned early that those who asked got. This story was submitted for the Edina History Museum’s upcoming “Growing Up in Edina: a Show and Tell Exhibit” that opens Saturday, Oct. 29. One-fifth of the U.S. House of Representatives, that’s 81 members and their spouses including 3rd District Rep. Erik Paulsen, plan to enjoy an all expense paid trip to Israel. This junket is courtesy of the American Israel Education Foundation, a charity affiliated with the American Israel Public Affairs Committee, an exceedingly powerful lobbying group whose efforts have influenced American foreign policy for more than five decades. AIPAC is so muscular that it has convinced our “leaders” that Israel requires $3 billion U.S. taxpayer dollars every year for its military. That’s $30 billion dollars promised from 2009 to 2018 to a country without a struggling economy. Could AIPAC seduce Washington into a war with Israel’s archenemy Iran as well? We have certainly proven that we are gullible enough. Those 81 representatives touring Israel’s ancient sights, sunning on its beaches and being wined and dined are primed to do its bidding. Ledder, Robb will be missed on school board To the editor: I want to take this opportunity as a newer school board member to thank Bert Ledder and Peyton Robb for their years of service to Edina Schools. Bert’s passion for the arts and mental health has always kept us focused on the “whole” student. Bert’s nose for detail was absolutely critical to the several-year review of policies, many of which had sat dormant for decades. Peyton will be missed for his money sense and the history he has developed of the district’s facilities. He knows every nook and cranny of our aging buildings and can read the fine print on the “pay out” sheets like no one else. That expertise will be hard to replace. PUBLIC SAFETY Police report The following is a summary of selected incidents listed on the Edina Police Department weekly crime report Aug. 814: Aug. 8 – A 20-year-old Richfield man was arrested for possession of stolen property and tampering with an automobile on the 6000 block of Zenith Avenue after officers found him with items valued at approximately $161. A 16-year-old

girl was arrested for curfew violation. Items valued at $32 were reported stolen from an unlocked vehicle on the 6100 block of Beard Avenue. Property damage was reported on the 5900 block of Zenith Avenue South. An unknown person threw a brick at a vehicle and damaged the windshield. Tylenol valued at $25 was reported stolen from a resident at Sunrise of Edina, 7128 France Ave. S. Items valued at $3,789 were reported

A Chevrolet Monte Carlo valued at $500 was reported stolen on the 4100 block of Parklawn Avenue. Two cell phones valued at $930 were reported stolen by two unidentified persons from the AT&T store at Southdale Center. Police received a report that a customer entered Jerry’s Foods, 5125 Vernon Ave. S., several times and harassed employees. Aug. 11 – An iPod valued at $299 was reported stolen from an unlocked vehicle on the 7300 block of France Avenue South. Aug. 12 – A 24-year-old Edina woman was arrested for DWI on the 6300 block of France Avenue South after the vehicle she was driving stopped for a traffic violation. A 20-year-old Eden Prairie man was arrested for underage drinking and driving on the 5800 block of Highway 62 after the vehicle he was driving was stopped for a traffic violation.

A 59-year-old Minneapolis man was arrested for possessing an open bottle of alcohol after the vehicle he was driving was stopped for a traffic violation on the 3200 block of Southdale Circle. Officers responded to a report of a patient acting suspiciously at Advancements in Dermatology, 7373 France Ave. S. Aug. 13 – An 18-year-old Eden Prairie woman was arrested for underage drinking and driving on the 6500 block of France Avenue South after the vehicle she was driving was stopped for a traffic violation. Property damage was reported at Birchcrest Park, 6016 Hansen Road. An unknown persons set fire to the slide. A woman reported her purse and contents valued at $812 were stolen while she shopped at Marshalls in Southdale Center. Police received a report of a dispute between neighbors on the 4500 block of Bruce Avenue regarding a fence. Aug. 14 – A 19-year-old Edina resident was arrested for underage and consumption and open house party after officers responded to a loud party on the 4200 block of Parklawn Avenue. Five 19-yearolds from Chaska and Chanhassen were arrested for underage consumption.

Fire report The Edina Fire Department responded to the following incidents Aug. 8-14: Aug. 8 – Firefighters investigated a report of a carbon monoxide alarm on the 4600 block of Moorland Avenue. The home was being renovated. No gas appli-

ances were hooked up. Floor finish was suspected to cause the false readings. Paramedic firefighters responded to 10 incidents requiring emergency medical service. Aug. 9 – Firefighter paramedics responded to a motorcycle versus car crash with injuries on the 5100 block of Vernon Avenue. There was a vehicle crash without injuries on Highway 62 near Tracy Avenue. A smoke smell was reported in a home on the 6300 block of Rolf Avenue. A malfunctioning fan in a basement bathroom was found to be the cause. The homeowner was advised to replace the unit. There were 10 EMS responses and one false fire alarm reported. Aug. 10 – A hissing sound thought to be a natural gas leak was reported on the 6400 block of Mendelssohn Lane. Firefighters arrived and shut off the gas at the meter and entered the home but found no gas readings. Further investigation found water spraying from a broken water pipe in the laundry room was the cause of the noise. An employee at a business on the 3900 block of West 50th Street reported seeking smoke after turning on an HVAC system. Firefighters investigated and found no fire. An HVAC malfunction was suspected. A passerby reported a small fire near a bench at a park on the 6000 block of Hansen Road. Firefighters arrived and found a melted piece of plastic, possibly a soda bottle. Damage to the playground equipment was also later discovered.

Edina police are investigating. There were 11 EMS incidents. Aug. 11 – Paramedics and an engine crew assisted at a vehicle crash with injuries on Highway 62 at Gleason Road. A carbon monoxide alarm malfunction was investigated on the 7200 block of Wooddale Avenue. There were 18 EMS responses and two false fire alarms. Aug. 12 – A mutual aid request from the St. Louis Park Fire Department was cancelled en route. A passerby reported a natural gas odor on the 7300 block of Gallagher Drive. No odor or gas readings were found. Two recreational fire complaints were investigated. There were 11EMS calls and one false fire alarm reported. Aug. 13 – A recreational fire complaint was investigated and no fire was found. There were 12 EMS responses and one false fire alarm. Aug. 14 – Firefighters responded to the report of a smoking electrical control box on Highway 62 at Tracy Avenue. No fire was found. Dispatch contacted the Minnesota Department of Transportation to report the possible electrical malfunction. The Eden Prairie Fire Department requested mutual aid for a structure fire. Edina crews were asked to respond to EP Station 1 to cover additional calls. A mutual aid request from the St. Louis Park Fire Department was cancelled en route. There were nine EMS incidents.

Budget FROM PAGE 1 According to Assistant Finance Director Eric Roggeman, the $26.5 million levy in the first scenario accounts for a 3.6 percent increase in salaries and benefits to reflect contracts signed last year, “but salary increases aren’t expected to be that much.” The 2011 budget reflected only a 1 percent increase in salaries, but contracts settled with its five labor unions later provided increases of 1 percent to 3 percent in 2011. The increase in 2012 reflects that as well as three contracts already in place for 2012. They provide raises of 1 percent to 2 percent. The city must still settle contracts with its patrol officers and public works and park maintenance employees. The second scenario included additional spending requests from departments for a $27.5 million levy – a 6.9 percent increase over the current year. Among the items are a new facility manager position at $109,000, reinstatement of a police investigator position eliminated last year for $91,350, restoration of $500,000 in equipment expenditures cut in 2009 and 2010 and $400,000 to set up a new fund for severance packages.

City Manager Scott Neal said the method, which would create a designated fund for retirement payouts rather than use general reserves, “might not be best way to use limited capital” at this time. Councilmember Josh Sprague said he could support some of the items proposed by staff, such as the facilities manager position. The role could pay for itself through increased efficiency and cost savings. “I see additions are needed but in my head I can also think of things that could be reduced in certain departments. Rather than just adding and adding, it’s reallocation,” Sprague said. He wants the levy increase to be no more than 1 percent. “We have to follow the private sector and live within our means,” he said. Hovland said he would be comfortable deferring equipment purchases again, and would like to ask department heads to find more areas to cuts that don’t affect personnel or quality of city services. “I’d love to say 3.5 [percent increase] just as a ballpark to start out and live within, but that will just look ridiculous to the public,” Councilmember Mary Brindle said. She said she’d rather aim for an increase of 2.5 percent to 3 percent. However, she said she also wanted a third scenario that provides equal wage

increases for all non-union and union employees in 2012. Roggeman said that would cost about $250,000, and increase the property tax levy close to 1 percent. “It’s a practice that’s been here. It’s a practice that would be nice to get back to and make last year an anomaly,” Brindle said. Councilmember Ann Swenson said she was comfortable with about a 3.5 percent to 4 percent levy increase. She said it would be difficult to maintain services and staff with less. “Unless we start cutting out positions, when you have a budget that is 70 percent people that’s really hard to do,” she said. Councilmember Joni Bennett said she wanted more information before adopting the preliminary levy. The city is awaiting results from a wage study that could better inform its decisions, she said. She said the city should be cognizant of current economic times and do its best to keep expenses down. “I don’t think we can hold it at zero or decrease it but I’d like to keep that increase as little as we can,” Bennett said. Last year, the council set its preliminary 2011 levy at $26.1 million, a 2.3 percent increase over the prior year. At final adoption, the levy was brought down to $25.8 million, or just over a 1.1 percent increase.

Horses FROM PAGE 1 visitors takes some work. “You’ve got all these large animals coming and going during the fair and 100,000 people on the ground at any time,” Fourré said. But Fourré said he welcomes the challenge. Though a city boy, the St. Paul native is no stranger to the fair. As a child, he frequently visited the fairgrounds only two blocks from his home. Over the years he’s shown horses, been a judge and sponsor at the fair. “When I grew up, on TV the heroes were the cowboys,” Fourré said. “Everybody wanted to have a horse. Most kids outgrew it but I never did.” In high school, he worked as a stable hand and continued through college, where he earned a degree in architecture. For several years, he and wife Sharon Fourré, or Sharon Thayer when she graduated from Edina High School, lived on ranches in New Mexico, Colorado and Illinois training and showing horses. For the last 15 years they’ve been back in the Twin Cities. Fourré, a judging official with the

American Quarter Horse Association, National Reining Horse Association and National Reined Cow Horse Association, still travels frequently to competitions around the world. Following the fair, he’ll judge one in Luxembourg. “It’s a lot of fun. I enjoy the judging and, of course, the traveling,” he said. Using his experience, he hired all of the judges for the Minnesota State Fair. He said much of his work was completed before the opening day, such as adjusting schedules to reduce the amount of time each entrant has to be at the fair and collaborating with the University of Minnesota on a contingency plan for disease outbreak. He’ll also be on hand at the Lee and Rose Warner Coliseum throughout the fair facilitating day-to-day activity. Part of his focus this year, in addition to making the shows more manageable for exhibitors, is making it interesting for guests as well. There will be an increase in education during the events, so viewers can “have fun but also learn something about a particular breed or event,” he said. Especially for metro residents, the horse show and other livestock features are a key part of the fair experience, he said. “The people that come to the barns

All horse events are free with admission to the fair. Fourré said there are two different kinds of competitions. In breed competitions, judges look at the horse to see if it meets breed characteristics, similar to dog shows. In performance competitions, judges look at movement or performance of a specific pattern. “It’s like figure skating. They go around the arena and do certain jumps and spins. They’re scored on how they perform the maneuvers,” he said. Draft horses, which can weigh more than 2,000 pounds each, are a highlight of the English Horse Show, with events every day from the beginning of the fair through Tuesday, Aug. 30. The Western Horse Show runs Friday, Sept. 2, through Monday, Sept. 5, and includes a number of exciting speed and timed events, such as barrel racing, he said. The crown sits atop your chimney and covers and seals it from the flue liners to the chimney edge. Many chimneys are built with an inadequate crown constructed from common mortar mix. Mortar is not designed for and will not withstand years of prolonged moisture exposure without cracking and chipping which allows water to penetrate the chimney. A proper crown is constructed of a Portland

cement mixture and formed to provide an overhang drip edge. This assures the water will shed helping to prevent erosion in the mortar and brick of the chimneys surfaces. Keeping the crown “watertight” and shedding away from the sponge like masonry elements that the chimney is built of is the most important element to preventing deterioration. At AirBroom Minnesota we use the industry leading line of Saver products to build and repair chimneys. Use of these products allows us to pass on manufacturers material warranties of up to 15 years to our clients. 3) Waterproof your masonry chimney and crown. Most masonry is porous and will absorb large amounts of water. Brick acts like a sponge absorbing water and wicking it to the chimney interior. Products we use are specifically developed for use as waterproofing agents on masonry chimneys. These are vapor permeable – which means they allow the masonry to breath out but not in. This allows water that has penetrated the chimney to escape while preventing additional water from entering from the outside. Non vapor permeable sealers commonly available should never be used because they trap moisture inside actually accelerating deterioration. We use a special permeable sealer with a 10 year consumer warranty to protect your chimney. Doing this before deterioration occurs can save you hundreds or even thousands of dollars in future repairs. Water damage to chimneys is usually a slow subtle process. The problem is generally not obvious until it has become quite serious. Although these prevention measures may cost you a few dollars they can save you a lot more by preventing large future masonry repairs. Old Chicago relies on proven formula BY JOHN SHERMAN SUN NEWSPAPERS Old Chicago used a proven formula to repeat as Edina Monday Night slowpitch softball champions last week. Three-run homers by Heath “Cubbie” Johnson, Ben Waltman and Sam Wigersma helped Old Chicago edge the Web Gems 20-17 in the championship game. The semifinals were more suspenseful for Old Chicago, which scored in the bottom of the seventh to beat the Techware Turbos 11-10. Waltman singled home Evan Jacobs with the game-winner. In the other semifinal game, the Web Gems scored 14 runs in the first inning on their way to a 15-3 victory over the Decoys. Johnson’s power hitting sparked Old Chicago. He was 7-for8 at the plate with two homers in the two victories and went 4-for-4 in the title game. Wigersma and Waltman also went 4-for-4 in the season finale. Johnson’s 380-foot home run cut the Web Gems’ lead to 3-2 in the bottom of the first inning. In the second inning, Old Chicago took the lead on Wigersma’s homer. “I got the nod from the big fel-

low [pitcher Derek Martinson],” said Wigersma. The nod meant swing for the fences. “It was go time,” said Martinson. “I got my pitch and hit it out,” said Wigersma. Old Chicago scored nine runs in the bottom of the third inning to build a 17-7 lead. Waltman’s homer made it 11-7. Jacobs followed with a two-run single, and then Johnson hit a two-run single. Ryan Trask belted a two-run double for the 10-run cushion. Left fielder Mike Burns was Old Chicago’s gold-glover in the championship game. He made a sliding catch on a foul ball and also ran down a deep drive near the outfield fence. “I’ve been struggling at the plate, so I have to do what I can to help the team win,” said Burns. On his sliding foul-ball catch, he risked life and limb to make a great play. “I caught it inches from the fence and stuck my glove into the fence to stop,” he said. Old Chicago’s player/coach, Andy Lundgren, said he was proud of his team’s dominance this season. In a league filled with dangerous opponents, Old

Chicago finished 20-1-2, including playoffs. “We know that whenever we play Techware, it’s going to be a great game,” said Lundgren. “Once we got past that one, we had to avoid a letdown in the championship game. The Web Gems are young, but they’re already a good team.” Lundgren recorded the final out, catching a line drive at third base. “I’ve had three slipped disks,” he said. “But if a ball’s hit right at me, I’ll catch it.” Total Wellness Chiropractic of Plymouth is the back-of-the-shirt sponsor for Old Chicago. Multi-talented Nick Rallis leads Edina High football team BY JOHN SHERMAN SUN NEWSPAPERS Once again this fall, the Edina High football team will suit up one of the premier seniors in Minnesota. Last year it was wide receiver Devin Crawford-Tufts, who is now playing at the University of Minnesota. This year’s big man on campus is Nick Rallis, who is one of three senior captains along with Brian Franz and Jake Remes. “Nick was all-conference last year,” said Edina head coach Reed Boltmann. “He and junior

Mark Handberg might share the quarterback position. We can also use Nick at slot receiver, tailback and tight end. On defense, he will play linebacker.” If Rallis does play quarterback a significant amount of the time, Boltmann will have to find other running backs. Some of the top prospects are seniors C.J. Johnson Francisco Hardacker and John Bryan, and junior Marley Allison. Targets for the Edina quarterbacks are wideouts Remes and junior Graham Woodward and tight ends Tom Balke, Nick Boone and Joe Wood.

Edina’s offensive line returns intact from last season with Franz, juniors Connor Cavanor and Ian Collins and seniors Adam Farhat and Kevin Carroll. Carroll, a Division I prospect, already has a scholarship offer from Northern Iowa. “College scouts like him a lot,” said Boltmann. “Kevin is 6-3 and 290 pounds with a nasty streak. He plays tackle for us, but will probably be moved to guard at the next level.” Defensively, Edina has a fairly strong nucleus returning. Rallis at linebacker is the key man. Senior Tory Dalbec played big

minutes last year and junior Coleman Foley has looked good in camp, Boltmann noted. Senior Hunter Fitzgerald is also in the mix. Up front, Edina will build around 5-11, 282-pound junior nose tackle Deon Dorvil. “Deon has the talent to be AllState and a Division I player,” said Boltmann. “He was all-conference honorable mention last fall.” Other experienced players in the defensive line are seniors Bill Nash and Preston Blanek. Junior Greg Maloney has looked good in practice, Boltmann said.

Drew Wagner and Reece Williamson will see playing time at end. Defensive backs include Diondre Green, Tryg Veker, C.J. Johnson, Allison, Hardacker and Remes. Kicker Marcus Jones won a big game against Minnetonka with a late field goal last season. He graduated in the spring, but another soccer-style kicker, Alex Van Gorp, is ready to take over. The Hornets will open the season in a non-conference game against Andover at 7 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 1, at Andover High Stadium.

Edina’s Reggie Dunlop recalls the day that changed his life forever BY JOHN SHERMAN SUN NEWSPAPERS When Robert Dunlop of Edina was a freshman at Concordia University in St. Paul, he eagerly jumped on the bus for the spring trip to Ft. Myers, Fla. One thing no one told Dunlop was that the trip would take 30 hours. That’s a long time on a bus, so the players had to find ways to pass the time. Part of Concordia’s ritual was to watch movies. In an attempt to elevate team spirits, one of Dunlop’s teammates popped the movie “Slap Shot” into the VCR. The hockey comedy stars Paul Newman as a beleaguered player/coach by the name of Reggie Dunlop. He teaches his team, the Charlestown Chiefs, that fighting beats old-time hockey and brings in the Hanson brothers from the Iron League to reinforce the point. Everyone enjoyed the movie and by the time it ended, Robert Dunlop had a new nickname. It was one of those days that

changed his life, and now everyone calls him “Reggie.” The identity is more appropriate now than ever because “Reggie” is the eldest player on the Edina ESOX amateur baseball team. Five years removed from college, he’s the one younger teammates come to for advice and counsel. “I guess I’ve taken on some of the characteristics of Reggie,” said Dunlop, who recently represented Edina in the RiverviewPark National All-Star Game at Red Haddox Field in Bloomington. “I’ve always liked my nickname; it has a good ring to it.” Dunlop, who stands 6-foot-2 and weighs 201 pounds, started his baseball career in the Edina youth leagues and played varsity ball at Edina High. He wasn’t heavily recruited out of high school, but Concordia coach Mark “Lunch” McKenzie liked him and signed him. “I was fortunate to play for Lunch,” said Dunlop. “Throughout my career at

Concordia, I was surrounded by great talent and great coaches.” Dunlop played first base and also did a little pitching. Those were the same roles he filled when he first joined the Edina town team in 2003. “I have always loved playing for the ESOX,” he said. “When I first joined the team, we had the Fronek brothers, the Garvin brothers and, of course, Denny Scanlon.” Scanlon is the manager and puts in long hours to make sure the ESOX run smoothly. “We don’t have the veterans we used to have,” said Dunlop. “In fact, we’re in the midst of a youth movement now. Denny makes it fun and realizes that the summer is a time for concerts, cabins and friends as well as baseball.” Dunlop, who will soon turn 28, made the Riverview All-Star team for the third time this summer. “When I started playing town ball in 2003, the biggest adjustment was going from aluminum bats to wood bats,” said Dunlop,

who hit in the .275 to .300 range this season. “Wood bats are unforgiving. You have to put the barrel on the ball.” When Dunlop isn’t playing ball, he’s working for the Hartford Insurance Company, specializing in group disability insurance. The ESOX had some big wins this season but were inconsistent, finishing 10-16 overall. “There is a promising future here,” said Dunlop. “One of my jobs is to be there for my teammates, on and off the field. The young guys are making the transition to wood-bat baseball … it takes patience.” As far as his career is concerned, Dunlop said there’s no end in sight. “As I get older, there is more physical preparation, more stretching,” he said. “It would be tough to give it up, so I’ll probably be here for as long as my body allows.” Asked if he’ll always be “Reggie,” Dunlop smiled. “I tend to introduce myself as
