Felony charge filed against Senser BY KATIE MINTZ • SUN NEWSPAPERS Amy Senser, 45, of Edina has been charged in the hit-and-run death of a Roseville man last month. Senser, the wife of former Viking Joe Senser, was charged Thursday, Sept. 15, in Hennepin County District Court with one felony count of criminal vehicular homicide operation. Senser was briefly detained in Hennepin County Jail before being released on $150,000 bond Thursday afternoon, Sept. 15. If convicted, she faces up to 10 years in prison and a $20,000 fine. An attorney for the victim’s family has also filed a wrongful death lawsuit against the Sensers seeking damages in excess of $50,000. According to the criminal complaint, at approximately 11:10 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 23, the Minnesota State Patrol responded to a medical emergency on the ramp to eastbound Highway 94 from Riverside Avenue in Minneapolis. Upon arrival, troopers found the body of 38-year-old Anousone Phanthavong lying face down on the ramp, approximately 40 feet in front of a Honda Accord. A blue container that appeared to contain gas was between the vehicle and the body of the deceased man. From the evidence at the scene, it appeared that Phanthavong was attempting

to put fuel in his vehicle when he was struck by another car. Troopers located multiple parts left behind by the suspect vehicle, several of which appeared to have blood on them. Officers determined one of the headlights appeared to Amy Senser have come from a Mercedes GLK300. At approximately 10:30 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 24, the state patrol received a call from attorney Eric Nelson. He stated that he was going to release a Mercedes ML350 that was involved in the accident the previous evening. Nelson indicated that the vehicle was located at the Senser residence in Edina. The state patrol responded to that address and took custody of the vehicle. Damage to the front passenger side was observed as well as a broken headlight and fog light on the passenger side. The front passenger fender was also dented and there appeared to be blood on the hood. On Friday, Sept. 2, Senser provided the following statement to the state patrol: “I, Amy Senser, was the driver of the vehicle in the accident in which [the victim] lost his life.”

Edina Reads features one of its own Laura Goode, 2002 EHS grad, to present debut novel ‘Sister Mischief’ BY KATIE MINTZ • SUN NEWSPAPERS Laura Goode said the attitude in Edina has changed in the 10 years since she graduated high school and began her writing career. But readers will likely still recognize Hollyhill, Minn., the tight-laced, suburban fictional town where her debut teen novel is set. In “Sister Michief,â€? the 2002 Edina High School graduate describes eating lunch in the high school commons, trips down France Avenue and nearby landmarks like Lake Harriet. “The most autobiographical aspect of the book is the setting. It’s very closely based on Edina,â€? said Goode, who will return to Edina this month. Goode will be interviewed by her former Edina High School AP literature teacher Betsy Cussler at an Edina Reads event 7-9 p.m. Monday, Sept. 26, in the Fireside Room at the Edina Senior Center, 5280 Grandview Square. Goode describes “Sister Mischief,â€?

released by Candlewick Press in July, as “the world’s first interracial, gay hip-hop, love story for teens. It follows 16-year-old Esme Rockett as she comes out of the closet and forms an MC group with two friends. Goode said she wrote the novel after seeing a lack of diversity of characters in teen fiction, and for youth who feel misunderstood and alone during high school. She said Edina has made strides in the last decade to fight homophobia, now boasting a strong Gay Straight Alliance and zero-tolerance bullying policy. Other communities have a way to go, she said. Cussler praised the novel for its truth about issues young people face today. She said she likely would not have been able to teach the book 10 years ago due to language and situations presented inside, but times have changed. “I don’t think [students] bat an eye at language anymore, said Cussler, who retired from Edina in 2005 after more than two decades teaching English. “I think this is a new frontier for literature. Carol Goode said she and husband Larry Goode of Edina are incredibly proud of their daughter. While “Sister Mischief can be a slight shock for people of their BOOK: TO PAGE 14

Edina seeking new standards of excellence Superintendent looks to the past as district plans for the future Edina Public Schools is in the process of refining our strategic plan. As we move forward into the future, our challenge is to continue to seek new standards of excellence, building on our successes as a top district in the nation and growing into an international presence.

A history of excellence Our school district has a long tradition of advancing our performance through strategic planning. This past summer, as the school board and administration began gathering background data to shape a community dialogue about strategic directions for our district’s future, I spent time reviewing the history of Edina Public

RIC DRESSEN Edina Public Schools Superintendent

Schools. I was impressed by the many forward-thinking decisions made in our 153-year history. These decisions always focused on what was best for our youth and involved strong partnerships between the school district and community. In the 1930s, the district recognized the importance of getting students to school in a safe and timely way. This led the school board to purchase the first school buses. In the 1940s, the community supported expanding public education to include a high school, and Edina Morningside High School was built. Its first class graduated in 1951. In the 1950s, the teaching staff and administration seized an opportunity to advance student learning, and became one of the first hundred schools in

the nation to teach Advanced Placement classes. In the 1980s, with enrollment declining, the district closed Edina East High School and creatively repurposed the building to expand community education opportunities. The building later became home to our elementary French immersion option. In the 1990s, the community came together and formed the Edina Education Fund. In recent years, the Education Fund has raised about $500,000 annually to support a culture of innovation and possibilities in our schools. In the early 21st century, the community supported a bond referendum to update and renovate our facilities. Construction was completed in 2007.

Planning for the future Technology will continue to be a driving force in 21st-century education. For over a decade, Edina Public Schools has been steadily integrating technology

into our curriculum. This does not mean that we are neglecting the basics; our standardized test scores demonstrate that. It does mean that we are adding skills to the curriculum – skills like collaboration, creativity, problem solving, critical thinking, communication and cultural understanding. It means that we are integrating digital media technologies as a way to approach the curriculum, resulting in deeper and more lasting learning. Students fluent in these skills will be empowered with critical personal and professional skills as they enter a 21st century job market and world. I look forward to working with the staff and community to shape a new standard of excellence for Edina Public Schools through our strategic planning process. In upcoming months, we will provide opportunities for staff and community input. I believe that this will be another defining time for a remarkable school district, and I invite everyone to be a part of it.

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Endorsing Patzloff To the editor: I’m excited to endorse Sarah Patzloff for Edina School Board. I’ve seen firsthand Sarah’s determination and dedication to the Edina Family Center with her involvement on the advisory council. Sarah and I were on the same committee for two years, and in that time, I got a real sense of her attention to detail and her eagerness for improvement. She is no stranger to asking questions, and won’t rest until she gets to the bottom of a problem. Sarah has always had her finger on the pulse of the school board, and having her

on it is a huge benefit. Edina students, parents and taxpayers will have a fair-minded and responsible school board member with Sarah. Barry Eilers Edina

Vote yes on Edina levy referendum To the editor: Each spring the Edina Public Schools delivers approximately 600 graduates who are academically ready to move forward in our community and our world. These students are the product of a high quality pre-K to 12 public education

system, the Edina Public Schools. Citizens of Edina have a long-standing tradition of supporting their public schools and the schools help make Edina a strong, vibrant community. This fall, the Edina community has an opportunity to support Edina schools by voting yes on each of two levy referendum. An operating levy continues funding already in place and needed in the current budget. The renewal of this levy would continue funding for 10 years. A second technology levy would renew and increase funding for growing technology needs in a rapidly changing education environment. This

funding would also continue for 10 years. One-hundred percent of the funding provided by these levies stays in Edina. You can support today’s learners and tomorrow leaders at Edina Public Schools by voting yes on both levy referendum. We invite Edina citizens to learn more about the opportunity at voteyesedina.com, to continue the Edina tradition and to vote yes for Edina kids on Nov. 8. Dick and Sue Ward Edina Dick and Sue Ward are cochairs of the Vote Yes Committee. LETTERS: TO NEXT PAGE

CORRECTION The Sept. 15 article “Edina adopts preliminary levy with 1.8 percent increase” incorrectly states that the city would save $1.5 million by using $950,000 from its fund balance to prepay bonds in 2012-2013. It should have stated that, combined with other debt buy-down measures, the effort will reduce the city’s debt by a total of $1.5 million. The Sun-Current regrets the error.

The Edina Fire Department recently promoted two members of its crew. Craig Essig was selected as the new training and safety battalion chief and Pat Sandon was promoted to captain of the A-shift. Essig succeeds former Training and Safety Battalion Chief Tom Schmitz, who accepted a position with the Eden Prairie Fire Department in August. Essig joined the Edina Fire Department in 1998 as a paid-on-call firefighter before being hired full-time in 1999. Most recently, Essig served as captain of the Ashift. As training and safety battalion chief he is responsible for the development and maintenance of the fire department’s professional and technical skills, risk reduction, OSHA compliance, safety training, accident reporting and supervision of paid-on-call firefighters. Sandon succeeds Essig as the Ashift captain. He started with the Edina Fire Department in 1999 as a paid-on-call volunteer and has served as a paramedic-firefighter for the past eight years. Sandon also spent 16 years with the Hopkins Fire Department as a paid-on-call volunteer and currently serves as assistant chief of operations and training there. As captain of the A-shift, he oversees the readiness of personnel, vehicles and equipment, and is responsible for group activities, performance and accomplishments.

Nope, those are aeration “cores” on your lawn. Those cores are the result of a smart decision to aerate. Aeration is one of the most important natural and chemical free practices available to strengthen and beautify your lawn. Small cores are mechanically pulled from your lawn and left on top. This action helps control thatch, improves the soil structure, creates growth pockets for new roots, and opens the way for water, oxygen and fertilizer to reach the root zone of your lawn. Healthy lawns start with fall aeration!

High school students help collect coats for kids BY JONATHAN YOUNG • SUN NEWSPAPERS Students at Blaine High School will try to collect 500 winter coats for children in need this fall. Each year the Business Professionals of America class (known as BPA) at the high school coordinates a coat drive as part of the Coats for Kids campaign. Pilgrim Cleaners started the campaign 26 years ago to help families who couldn’t afford to buy winter coats. Eighteen years ago, Blaine High School became the first school to officially host a coat drive to support the campaign. Lana Rice teaches BPA at Blaine High School. “The students collect coats before school every day for two weeks,” she said. This year the school’s collection will run Monday, Sept. 26, through Thursday, Oct. 6. “We do it as a class,” Rice said. “It’s not necessarily and assignment. We do a lot of volunteer work through BPA.” At the end of the collection period, Pilgrim Cleaners sends a truck to pick

up the coats. Pilgrim then cleans the coats and gives them to local charities for distribution. Rice said the campaign won’t merely make an impact on the children receiving the coats, however. It will also affect the students collecting them. “It makes them realize that there are a ton of people in need,” she said. Blaine High School is only one of the schools participating in the Coats for Kids drive. According to Judy

Sprague with Pilgrim Cleaners, Blaine High School has often donated more coats than any other school. “We’ve donated over 10,000 coats over the years,” Rice said. Those who wish to donate coats can drop them off at Blaine High School or another participating school. They can also take them to any of the 25 Pilgrim Cleaners locations throughout the metro now through Saturday, Oct. 8. This year’s campaign is sponsored

by Pilgrim Cleaners, Sun Newspapers, KARE 11, KFAN and Subway. The charities receiving coats are Sabathani Community Center, Sharing and Caring Hands, Ronald McDonald House, Catholic Charities, STEP, CEAP, Lutheran Social Services and Hope for the City. Those who wish to send a cash donation should send it to the “Coats for Kids Fund” c/o Pilgrim Cleaners, 3217 85th Ave. N., Brooklyn Park, MN 55443.

MCA FROM PAGE 1 Edina’s overall math proficiency rate was approximately 80 percent, ahead of both Minnetonka at 78 percent and Wayzata at 77 percent. The statewide average was 56 percent. Edina’s overall reading proficiency rate was 92 percent, falling just behind Minnetonka also at 92 percent and ahead of Wayzata at 90 percent. The state average was 75 percent. Director of Research and Evaluation Chad Schmidt said Edina has consistently been 20 percentage points above the statewide average in both reading and math proficiency rates in recent years. “Over the last five years, Edina’s proficiency rates in math and reading have been among the highest in the state,” Schmidt said. Edina also saw gains in its own reading proficiency over last year. On the 2009-2010 test, students were rated 90 percent proficient. Proficiency in math, however, fell in Edina by approximately 7 percent from last year’s 87 percent rate, following a statewide trend. According to Schmidt, statewide math performance in grades 3-8 fell just under 9 percentage points, as this was

the first year of the new MCA-III math exam with more rigorous state standards. “While we saw a dip in math proficiency this year, some fluctuation is not unusual when a new test with a new format is administered for the first time,” Schmidt said. Reading proficiency increased at the elementary level by 2 percent over last year while math fell by 9 percentage points. At the middle level, reading proficiency rates increased by 1 percent and math decreased by 9 percent. High school students’ proficiency in reading held steady, while math proficiency increased by 2 percent as high school level students were not held to the new higher standards. According to Schmidt, Edina Public Schools has also started to see results that indicate a narrowing of the achievement gap among student groups defined by federal No Child Left Behind legislation, including black, free-reduced price meal, and limited English proficient. “Over a four-year period we’ve seen double-digit increases from our three student populations,” Schmidt said. Schmidt said he would present a report on Minnesota Comprehensive Assessment results to the Edina School MCA: TO PAGE 21

Golf FROM PAGE 1 “There may be some items that require capital investment along the lines of a ‘you have to spend money to make money’ type of idea. The city underwent the $20,000 study this summer to help prioritize short- and long-term options for the course, said Park and Recreation Director John Keprios. Braemar facilities include three nine-hole regulation courses, two nine-hole executive courses, a driving range, golf dome, pro shop, grill and clubhouse event space. According to the city, revenues have historically exceeded expenses at Braemar, but debt payments for the construction of the Fred Richards Executive Course and the newest of the regulation nine at Braemar put it in a negative cash position. Payments on the debt will end in 2013. At that time,

there could be an opportunity to make updates to improve profitability, Keprios said. “We’ll come up with a very detailed wish list [based on the recommendations], Keprios said, noting any spending would depend on availability of money and other city needs. Braemar General Manager Todd Anderson is expected to present his set of recommendations based on the 118page National Golf Foundation study to the park board Tuesday, Oct. 11. Keprios said by and large, the study findings mirror what park staff have identified as issues and needs over the years. Among the most important actions for the city’s golf operations are paying off the existing debt, investing in upgrades recommended by the National Golf Foundation, modernizing marketing and continuing to control expenses, Singer said. The top recommended capital upgrade was an expansion of the driv-

ing range and remodel of the adjacent nine-hole executive course at Braemar. According to the study, additional length would improve safety and allow space for a learning center at the range. The nearby nine-hole would need to be reduced to a par-3 course to accommodate the expansion. That would add a new draw, as the city already has another executive course at Fred Richards, Singer said. National Golf Foundation estimated the cost of the project at $300,000 to $400,000, with an increase in revenue each year of $20,000 to $25,000. “It was always on our radar screen. We’re going to see if we can come up with the money to make it happen, Keprios said. Another suggested upgrade was a system of golf cart paths connecting holes. At an estimated $80,000, the paths would allow more rounds to be played following rain without damage to the grass, Singer said. The city’s draft 2012-2016 capital

improvement plan prepared for the park board includes $550,000 in 2013 for the golf range expansion, and $20,000 in 2012 and $100,000 each in 2015 and 2016 for cart paths. The draft capital improvement plan also includes $140,000 for a structural update to the golf dome building in 2012. It was estimated at a cost of $460,000 in the capital improvement plan approved last year. According to staff, the wood building is under a lot of stress with the dome now directly attached. Rather than replace the building, staff has since suggested a more cost-effective method of installing steel framing to support the dome. The park board is slated to discuss the capital improvement plan, as well as updated business plans and budgets for all park enterprise facilities, at a special meeting 7 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 27, at City Hall. will act on the items later this year as part of the 2012 budgeting process. In his presentation, Singer said the city has to prepare for a “new reality.” Nationwide, there has been an increase in the number of courses over the past several years paired with a declining interest in golf and

unfavorable economic outlook. In Edina, rounds were lagging as many as 10,000 this year behind last, attributed in large part to a rainy season. Other factors affecting Braemar are high expenses and outdated marketing practices, Singer said. He acknowledged the city has undergone cost reduction measures over the past year leaving vacant positions unfilled. He said the city should also look into maintaining annual or semiannual rate increases to keep up with infla-

21

tion. As a “hybrid course,” combining standard and premium amenities, Singer said Braemar could justify a 2 percent increase in fees every other year. He said the city should also consider hiring an outside contractor to run the clubhouse grill, which could mitigate losses by reducing overhead. Singer cautioned the city against perusing projects with expected low returns on investment, such as major changes to the clubhouse.

Lake football begins Two teams will have the opportunity to take the early lead in Lake Conference football this week. In 7 p.m. games Friday, Sept. 23, Hopkins will visit Eden Prairie and Edina will travel to Minnetonka. Eden Prairie is ranked No. 1 in the state in Class 5A and rallies behind senior running back Andrew Larson. Hopkins has a high-profile player of its own, Division I receiver prospect Andre McDonald. Minnetonka has a defense that swarms to the ball with Charles Webb leading the way from the secondary. The Edina Hornets already have one shutout, a 38-0 rout of Minneapolis Southwest. Scott Benedict, Minnetonka’s senior quarterback, has been throwing the ball well. He piled up 210 yards and three touchdowns through the air during a 24-0 victory over Armstrong. While four of the five Lake teams are playing conference games this week, Wayzata will travel to Iowa to play Carmel Catholic from Chicago in a 6 p.m. game Friday, Sept. 23, at the University of Dubuque.

John Bryan Edina High’s senior tailback rushed for 140 yards on 37 carries in the Hornets’ 2714 loss Sept. 16 at Lakeville North. Bryan scored touchdowns on 1- and 2-yard runs as the Hornets slipped to 2-1 overall.

Hornets battle Minnetonka in Lake football Friday night BY JOHN SHERMAN • SUN NEWSPAPERS Something has to give Friday, Sept. 23 at Minnetonka’s Einer Anderson Field. Edina’s offense enters the game with an output of 24.4 points per game. Minnetonka’s defense has not allowed a point through the first three games. “Minnetonka is arguably the best team in the state right now,” said Edina head coach Reed Boltmann earlier this week. “I would rank them the best, defensively.” The Skippers have wins over TotinoGrace (28-0), Armstrong (24-0) and Jefferson (43-0). Meanwhile, Edina is 2-1 in pre-conference play with wins over Andover (21-14) and Minneapolis Southwest (38-0) and a loss to Lakeville North (27-14) last Friday night. It is important for Edina to get off to a

good start on opening night in the Lake Conference. In another 7 p.m. game Friday, Sept. 23, Hopkins travels to Eden Prairie. “My attitude going to Minnetonka is, let’s see how good we are,” said Boltmann. The Edina head coach had mixed emotions following the loss to Lakeville North. “We won the battle on the stat sheet, but lost the battle on the scoreboard,” he said. “I was proud of our effort. We held them to 0 yards rushing, but we gave up three big pass plays over the top. Their quarterback is a great playmaker, and he was the difference.” Edina’s offense controlled the ball with senior tailback John Bryan rushing 37 times for 140 yards. “I thought we controlled the game for the most part,” said Boltmann. “But Lakeville North is a good team, and they were able to keep us out of the end zone.”

The Edina High junior placed first in the 200-yard individual medley and the 500 freestyle during the Edina High girls swimming and diving team’s 94-87 Lake Conference dual-meet victory over Eden Prairie Sept. 15. Eden also led off for the Hornets’ first-place 200 medley relay. Others on that relay were Olivia Anderson, Maryellen Campbell and Emma Wittmer.

Nikki Larson Edina High’s senior captain won the 100- and 200-yard freestyle races during the Hornets’ 94-87 victory over Eden Prairie in a Lake Conference girls swimming meet Sept. 15. Larson also swam on winning 200 medley and 200 freestyle relay teams.

Nathan Rousey Edina High’s boys soccer goalie was flawless during a 1-0 shutout of Wayzata Sept. 15 at Wayzata High Stadium.

Nora Steinhagen The Edina High senior won the 500yard freestyle during the Apple Valley Swimming and Diving Invitational Sept. 17. Edina won the championship, outscoring second-place Winona 648-542.

Hornet boys soccer team clamps down on Trojans Jenson’s club rebounds from Eden Prairie loss BY JOHN SHERMAN • SUN NEWSPAPERS After Eden Prairie handed the Edina High boys soccer team its first loss of the season Sept. 13, the Hornets needed a big game at Wayzata Sept. 15. “Traditionally, we haven’t had a lot of wins at Wayzata,” said Edina head coach Dave Jenson. “But we needed to bounce back from the Eden Prairie loss.” The Hornets did just that, beating Wayzata 1-0. Both clubs played close to the vest, but finally Edina made its winning run with seven minutes remaining in the second half. “[Assistant coach] Bill Garner suggested we put Michael Murney out there,” said Jenson. “And once he was out there, Wayzata couldn’t match his speed.” Evan Panken hit Murney with a

pass, and after beating a defender, Murney passed to Jens Undlin, who banged home the goal. “We had a good performance from our defense,” said Jenson. “Nathan Rousey was in goal. We had Alex Van Gorp at sweeper and John Lagorio at stopper. Austin Wothe played left back and Nick Stastny was at right back, replacing Joe Budenske, who was out with an injury.” Edina lost 5-1 to Eden Prairie even though Jenson thought his team had more time of possession. “It was one of those games,” he said. “Eden Prairie had seven shots and scored on five of them.” Panken had Edina’s goal on a pass from Stephen Johnson. Next for the Hornets (7-1-1) is a Lake Conference match with Hopkins at 5 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 22, at Hopkins High Stadium. The Hornets will play St. Michael-Albertville in a non-conference match at 7 p.m. Monday, Sept. 26, at Kuhlman Field.

Trojan girls roll past Edina in Lake girls soccer match Hornets also drop one to Eden Prairie squad BY JOHN SHERMAN • SUN NEWSPAPERS Lara Boman (21) of the Edina High girls soccer team crashes into two Wayzata players to win this header Sept. 15 at Wayzata High Stadium. Wayzata prevailed 3-1 in the Lake Conference match. (Photo by John Sherman • Sun Newspapers)

Wayzata High girls soccer coach Tony Peszneker and his counterpart at Edina, Simon Whitehead, are good friends. But for 80 minutes Sept. 15, they put their friendship aside and battled for bragging rights in Lake Conference play. “Anytime two good teams play, they want desperately to win,” said Peszneker after the Trojans pulled out a 3-1 victory at Wayzata High Stadium. Goals by Summer Johnson and Maddie Eklin gave Wayzata a 2-0 halftime lead. The teams exchanged penalty kicks in the second half with Brittany Bingham scoring for Edina and Kylie Schwarz scoring for Wayzata. Delane Swanson was Wayzata’s winner in goal. “We knocked the ball around pretty well,” said Whitehead. “We have

had some injury problems lately. Allie Davis and Morgan Faulkner have been hobbling and Hailey Merrill has missed almost two weeks.” Given the injury problems, Edina’s healthy players have been asked to do more. “Midfielder Mary Stafford was all over the field against Wayzata,” said Whitehead. “Sydney Born and Patty Weicht played well defensively.” In another conference game Sept. 13, Edina bowed to Eden Prairie 1-0. “We basically dominated, but we were panicky around the goal,” said Whitehead. “We needed to do a better job of finishing our chances.” Through three games, Edina had a 0-2-1 record in the Lake Conference. There is still time to jump back in the race, but at the same time, urgency has set in. Next for the Hornets is a 5 p.m. match with Hopkins Thursday, Sept. 22, at Hopkins High Stadium. In a meeting at Edina earlier in the season, the Hornets tied Hopkins 0-0. Edina stands 5-2-2 overall and has four shutouts.

Hornets post 4-3 VB mark New coach Chapek has Edina girls playing well BY JOHN SHERMAN • SUN NEWSPAPERS After winning the Heritage Christian Invitational Sept. 16-17, the Edina High girls volleyball team entered the current week with a 7-3 overall record. First-year head coach Steph Chapek is excited about the way the Hornets are playing. They will have a big challenge at 7 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 22, when they play a Lake Conference match with Hopkins at Hopkins Lindbergh Center. “We’re trying to instill two things – work hard and play together,” said Chapek after her team won five of six matches in the Heritage Christian tournament. Edina’s lineup is young this fall with only two seniors on the varsity roster. “Senior captains Maggie Cochrane and Maggie Brink have displayed excellent leadership and competitiveness,” said Chapek. “Other top contributors are eighth-grader Natalie Haben, sophomore Sarah Lehman and junior Christine Harvey. Natalie has been out with a

sprained ankle.” Haben was missed in the Heritage tourney, but her teammates took up the slack. Prior to playing the semifinals and finals, the Hornets defeated Fridley, Providence Academy and Heritage Christian and lost to Armstrong. Edina won its semifinal match against Henry Sibley and then avenged the Armstrong loss with a victory in the title match. Scores against Armstrong were 1925, 25-15, 15-10. Bain leads CC team Senior Piper Bain was Edina High’s top runner during the Apple Jack cross country meet Sept. 16 in Lakeville. Bain finished 10th overall as she covered the 4K course in 14 minutes, 58 seconds. Steph Kohn (18th) was second for Edina. Lakeville South was the Apple Jack champion with 62 points and Eagan was second with 89. Edina edged Prior Lake 115-117 for third place. Hall of Fame banquet The Edina High Athletic Hall of Fame will induct eight new members during a 7 p.m. banquet Thursday, Sept. 29, at Edina Country Club. Tickets: cindyfarmer@comcast.net.

At AirBroom Minnesota In Excelsior Can Help How does your chimney look? Are the bricks crumbling? Does it have White or Black exterior staining? Are you afraid to use your fireplace because you’re not sure how safe it is? When was the last time you used it? The professionals at AirBroom Minnesota Fireplace and Air Duct Cleaning in Excelsior can restore both your confidence and your chimney. Did you know that water causes more damage to masonry chimneys than fire? Your chimney, unlike other parts of your house, is constantly exposed to the elements. They are generally constructed of brick, mortar, tile, steel, and iron. All of these materials suffer deterioration as a result of prolonged contact with water. Freeze and thaw cycles so familiar here in the Twin Cities cause stress on the chimney. Water that has penetrated expands and contracts. Left unchecked it will cause interior and exterior damage to your home and masonry chimney. Some of the damage that can be caused includes: 1) spalled and broken exterior brickwork, 2) deteriorated masonry and metal firebox assemblies, 3) rusted dampers, 4) decayed mortar, cracked or missing flue liners, and in the worst case scenario damage to adjoining walls, ceilings, and woodwork. There are three main ways to prevent water damage. 1) Install a chimney cap. This is the most inexpensive measure to prevent water penetration to the flue and inside chimney elements. We sell and install locally manufactured caps for as little as $99. 2) Repair or replace a damaged chimney crown. The crown sits atop your chimney and covers and seals it from the flue liners to the chimney edge. Many chimneys are built with an inadequate crown constructed from common mortar mix. Mortar is not designed for and will not withstand years of prolonged moisture exposure without cracking and chipping which allows water to penetrate the chimney. A proper crown is constructed of a Portland

cement mixture and formed to provide an overhang drip edge. This assures the water will shed helping to prevent erosion in the mortar and brick of the chimneys surfaces. Keeping the crown “watertight” and shedding away from the sponge like masonry elements that the chimney is built of is the most important element to preventing deterioration. At AirBroom Minnesota we use the industry leading line of Saver products to build and repair chimneys. Use of these products allows us to pass on manufacturers material warranties of up to 15 years to our clients. 3) Waterproof your masonry chimney and crown. Most masonry is porous and will absorb large amounts of water. Brick acts like a sponge absorbing water and wicking it to the chimney interior. Products we use are specifically developed for use as waterproofing agents on masonry chimneys. These are vapor permeable – which means they allow the masonry to breath out but not in. This allows water that has penetrated the chimney to escape while preventing additional water from entering from the outside. Non vapor permeable sealers commonly available should never be used because they trap moisture inside actually accelerating deterioration. We use a special permeable sealer with a 10 year consumer warranty to protect your chimney. Doing this before deterioration occurs can save you hundreds or even thousands of dollars in future repairs. Water damage to chimneys is usually a slow subtle process. The problem is generally not obvious until it has become quite serious. Although these prevention measures may cost you a few dollars they can save you a lot more by preventing large future masonry repairs. The Hartmann’s at AirBroom Minnesota in Excelsior offer free no obligation repair estimates in the Western Metro area. Call John, Jim, or Lynda today to arrange a free no obligation estimate. Visit us at AirBroomMinnesota.com or call us at 952.545.2254. As a bonus, repair jobs over $750 scheduled with us prior to September 30th receive $100 off when you mention this article.
