A winter day spent ice-skating at Centennial Lakes Park would not be complete, for many, without a cup of hot cocoa by the fire. But the crackling logs that beckon skaters into Edina’s Hughes Pavilion can also harm the air and keep some residents from enjoying the park all together. Now the city is considering converting its three wood burning fireplaces to gas. The Edina Energy and Environment Commission unanimously adopted a resolution in support of the change earlier this month. The Edina City Council is expected to discuss the proposal at an upcoming meeting. Commission Chair Dianne Plunkett Latham said the change would be the first step in addressing the environmental and health hazards posed by wood smoke. According to the commission’s resolution, “wood smoke emits fine particulates that contain many of the same deadly toxins that are in tobacco smoke and vehicle exhaust,” including formaldehyde, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons and other noxious pollutants.

Teaching a Devine pursuit Longtime Edina principal John Devine returns to the classroom BY KATIE MINTZ • SUN NEWSPAPERS One of Edina’s newest teachers has a couple things the others don’t. “I kind of see myself as a new teacher – a new teacher with just a few wrinkles,” said John Devine, 56. The second-grade teacher at Creek Valley Elementary School also has more than 20 years of experience as an elementary school principal, including 10 in Edina Public Schools. Devine most recently was principal at Normandale Elementary French Immersion School. When he began in fall 2000, it was at a time of high administrative turnover for the school. In the decade since he’s helped build stability, he said. The time was right to return to his first passion – teaching. “I wasn’t looking to get away from something,” he said. “I was looking to regain something and redo something I had previously done and loved.”
Devine began his career teaching special education and first grade 31 years ago in Monticello, Minn. He said he instantly clicked with the young students eager to learn to read, write and do math. “There’s just so much energy and so much excitement on the part of firsttime, full-day students,” he said. After eight years, however, he decided to pursue a Masters of Business Administration. He quickly decided his heart was in education and switched his focus to elementary administration. For 13 years he was a principal at a handful of schools in North Dakota and Wisconsin. Each presented a vastly different challenge. In his first job, he was a half-time principal, half-time teacher at a 115-student elementary school in a small, tight-knit community. He later oversaw an 800-student elementary on a U.S. Air Force base. The students came and went as their parents received new orders. “When I was first out on my I thought this was really great. I could still connect with the families and kids. I was a part of the whole educational process,” DEVINE: TO PAGE 13

It allows people to get out and do something for their neighbors in need and helps them too by getting in a healthy bike ride, she said. Brindle said the organizing committee, which includes representatives from Edina Park and Recreation, Edina Police, Edina Morningside Rotary Club and Bike
Edina Task Force, is already well on its way toward meeting a $7,500 goal. Allina Hospitals and Clinics is sponsoring the event with a $5,000 donation. Kim Radel, Allina’s director of community engagement for the west metro, said Tour de Edina fits with its focus on healthy eating, active living and life balance. Tour de Edina, which will benefit food shelves, encourage bicycling and family activities, meets all three, she said. “We know that in health care we need to shift from not only providing quality care in our hospitals and clinics, but to focus more on the prevention and wellness side so that before you even come to us we’re promoting lifestyle changes, Radel said.

Public Works landscaping an eco-friendly approach Once fully-grown, native plants will require little maintenance BY JOHN HOWARD GUEST COLUMNIST When the Edina Public Works and Park Maintenance Departments moved to their new location last year, they saved some green by putting in eco-friendly landscaping. The new landscaping includes native plants that are well adapted to Minnesota’s conditions and therefore need little or no watering, fertilizing or other care. The landscaping was designed by the Kestrel Design Group and installed by Applied Ecological Services, who will tend the grounds for the next couple of years until the native plants fill in.
By no means is the natural landscape just a random hodgepodge. It is a carefully designed mix of three different eco-types: native low-growing grasses, upland prairie and wetland. The seeds and plants for the eco-types are from local plants within 150 miles of Edina, ensuring the plants have a similar genetic identity to the historical inhabitants of the area. The native low-growing grasses will likely develop into the most visible section of the grounds as they run along the sidewalk and three sides of the building. Unfortunately, the native low-growing grass plantings are not yet mature. If all goes well, these areas will be covered by blue grama grass and buffalo grass in the not so distant future. These grasses have a slightly different growing structure and color than turf grass, but still maintain a short stature. Until they become established, Applied
Phantom candidates waste everyone’s time Each year when election season rolls around, a deep sigh echoes through our newsroom. To be honest, many deep sighs. It can be a very frustrating experience. For the most part, the candidates are good to deal with. They respond to our requests for information, make themselves available for interviews and generally take their bid for election serious. But there are always a handful who don’t. I call them the phantom candidates. Yes, they file to run, but that’s the last you hear from them. In doing our due diligence,

Ecological Services will trim the weeds on a monthly basis. Potentially the most distinct aspect of the new landscaping is the upland prairie, which runs up a small berm on the northeast corner of the property. This piece contains 30 or so species, some with interesting names like yarrow and blazing star – a favorite of Monarch butterflies. Right now, many annual weed species are fighting for space, but with proper management, the native perennials should take over in the next few years, according to Matt Lasch of Applied Ecological Services. Once the natives become the dominant species, the grounds will need little maintenance. The rain garden is currently the shining gem of the landscaping. It is full, green and helps clean and infiltrate water runoff from the parking lot before it enters the water table. A conventional design would
simply direct the runoff into the city’s storm sewer system. Applied Ecological Services expects in the near future that the rain garden will be home to a variety of species of birds and amphibians, and maybe even some small mammals. Butterflies already have made themselves at home. If you want a lower maintenance yard, or just want a more natural looking lawn, you too can put in native vegetation. To learn more, consider attending a tour of the Public Works landscaping this fall. Contact mnbuckthorn @gmail.com for details on the tours. Applied Ecological Services can be contacted at 952-447-1919 or online by visiting at appliedeco.com. LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Edina school levies are an investment To the editor: “The foundation of every state is the education of its youth.” – Diogenes “The direction in which education starts a person will determine that person’s future.” – Plato These ancient truths from Diogenes and Plato have extraordinary modern day relevance. In an age of innovation, we know that the rewards in life will go to those who know how to use knowledge technology. Those who have the ability to effectively use digital technology, biotechnology and nan-
otechnology, for example, will help create not only economic success for individuals but also propel the economies of nations. Our kids, given the proper educational opportunities and access to the technological tools to use to enhance that education, will be able to influence the future and help lead the world into new eras of innovation and success. Supporting the two referendums of the Edina Public Schools, even though we are in challenging economic times, is an investment we should and must make for the future of our kids and that of our country. I intend to support both the renewal levy and the technoloLETTERS: TO PAGE 11

Wahl FROM PREVIOUS PAGE candidates if they’ve seen or heard anything of the invisible candidate. On occasion we’ve gone back and sent registered letters (which came back undeliverable) and in one case I remember a couple years back, I sent a community editor to the doorstep of a so-called candidate. He wasn’t home. He also wasn’t home two days later when the community editor paid a return visit.
Over the years I’ve grown a bit less diligent about tracking down these folks. Who would file to run for office and then not participate in the campaign? What is the purpose, other than to cost the governing entity money? I suppose it’s a way of “making a statement,” but what would that statement be. “I’m so hard up for attention I file to run for office and then don’t participate in the election.” That is the statement being made, as far as I’m concerned. Already in this year’s election we’ve come across several phantom candi-

All serious candidates today down to the most microscopic of entities have a website, even if it’s nothing more than a glorified campaign pamphlet. The clincher is when they don’t answer their telephone for days on end. When certified mail is returned, you know you’ve reached the end. I suppose everyone has the right to choose how they will campaign – or in this case refuse to campaign. Maybe it’s time we put some sort of penalty into the election laws. Supports Patzloff To the editor: I write to endorse Sarah Patzloff ’s candidacy for the Edina School Board. I’ve been lucky to work with Sarah on
many district-level boards and councils, and have seen what an asset she is to each organization in which she participates. This level of involvement has given Sarah an abundant education in the workings of Edina Public Schools – both its successes and its challenges. Sarah’s commitment to the continued success of our community is clear, both through her championing of our programs as well as her thoughtful and probing questions for our leaders. Her diplomatic and creative problem solving would be a welcome addition to the Edina School Board. Leslie Iyer Edina

ful member of our community. With two of my own children in the Edina Public Schools, I would welcome Jason’s considerate, open-minded approach to policy and his commitment to high quality education for our children. I hope that he earns enough of his friends’ and neighbors’ votes on Nov. 8 to serve, as we would all benefit from Jason Berger’s advocacy on the Edina School Board. To the editor: I recently saw a yard sign informing me that my old friend Jason Berger is running for the Edina School Board. Having just recently returned to Edina from Washington, D.C., it was very refreshing to see that he is putting his hat in the ring to provide leadership in such an important area for our community. I have known and worked with Jason Berger on a number of community projects in the past six years. He is a trusted leader, a committed citizen and thought-

A tale of two cities To the editor: I own one home in Edina and one home in Richfield that is currently being rented due to the low value with home sale prices across the country. This has given me the opportunity to deal with two city halls, two sets of city rules and officials. I would describe myself as preferring to go “under the radar” and a rule follower. Over the years as a working professional in the community, I have felt from time to time it is necessary to step up and voice concerns for the better of the city and residents. I personally have experienced a very
big difference in how Edina officials respond to me versus Richfield officials. It makes a person wonder whether or not it has to do with the higher income Edina residents supposedly have – is there more compassion in Edina? – or the fact that my home in Richfield is a rental. After all, typically neighbors and people in the community are not thrilled about rentals. I can tell you that my home in Richfield is praised by neighbors for its on-going appearance and maintenance. About two years ago I contacted Richfield city officials in writing and by phone about a late fee penalty for a landlord license. The late fee (higher than most credit cards and loan sharks) was 74 percent. I thought it was hurtful to residents and the city. To this day the 74 percent late fee penalty is the same with no closure. Giovanna Ingram Edina

Devine FROM PAGE 3 Devine said, noting he missed that at the military base. For a stint, he was also principal at two elementary schools at the same time. He then was given the opportunity to open a new K-8 school. He helped design learning spaces, picked the staff and started a multi-age program like Edina’s Continuous Progress. He stayed there for seven years until returning to the Twin Cities to put down his roots. Devine’s parents had since moved from his childhood house in Roseville to Edina. “My dad just constantly was saying ‘Edina has a great school system. That’s where you want to be,’” he said. There were openings at two of Edina’s elementary schools, Countryside and Normandale. “I knew a lot about multi-age grouping. Countryside had its multi-age Continuous Progress program. It would have fit like a glove, but they wanted me at Normandale,” Devine said. “I also figured I love to learn, it’s a new challenge – an immersion school – and I don’t know French.” He said he enjoyed his time at Normandale but began to miss more and more the interaction with children. Since students at the immersion school are supposed to stay in the target language, he seldom got to ask them about what they were learning or how their day was going. Principals, Devine said, are also sometimes viewed as disciplinarians to be avoided. He learned this greeting the new kindergartners each year. “As I’d introduce myself, I’d quite often hear mom say, ‘But we don’t want to know that you’re in Mr. Devine’s office.’ I would say, ‘It’s a great place to go. I go there every day,’” Devine said. Devine said he believes the principal’s office is a classroom too, but a classroom focused on social and emotional education and well-being. “To me, I felt like a teacher even when I was a principal, but I wasn’t getting to make the kind of complete connection that you get to make when you actually are in the classroom every single day,” he said. A few years ago, Devine began taking time off in the summer to teach Vacation Bible School at Normandale Lutheran Church in Edina, where his wife also works. Getting to plan something other than staff meetings and parent conference brought back the excitement he knew as a teacher. He said he always wanted to return to
teaching before retirement. As he neared the end of his 10th year at Normandale, he decided the time was right for both him and the school. When Devine began as principal, he was the fourth administrator in a six-year period, he said. “Normandale was 20 years old last year and they’ve never had a Frenchspeaking principal. I really felt like they could find someone better than me,” he said. Isabelle Punchard, Normandale’s director of immersion programs, is serving as the interim leader of the school until Principal Gerry Lee Lukaska begins in January. Both speak French. Lukaska was previously dean of students at Valley View Middle School from 2002-2005 and taught third grade at Normandale from 1994-2001. Most recently, she was principal of Park Spanish Immersion School in St. Louis Park and has also been academic director, principal and superintendent of Academie Lafayette, a K-8 French Immersion Charter School in Kansas City, Mo. Creek Valley Principal Kari Dahlquist said she was glad to welcome Devine to her staff. “Clearly his passion is with the students on the front lines. He has a sense of fun. He connects will with kids,” said Dahlquist, who also knew Devine as a parent at Normandale. “I am thrilled that he’s here.” Some things have stayed the same. Devine greeted his 26 second-graders on the first day of school wearing a tuxedo – a longtime tradition of his. Always an early arriver, his wife who carpools with him from their home in Shakopee, thought she might get to sleep in, but Devine is finding himself at school even earlier to plan for the day. An avid runner, Devine likes that he can now wear one of his many pairs of tennis shoes to work, sometimes coordinating lace color with that of his shirt. For the first time, he got to decorate a classroom, even climbing a ladder this summer to paint the walls a dusty blue. “I like to think the kids are the excitement and this is the calming effect,” he said. As a teacher and even as an elementary school principal, Devine said people always asked what he’d do next. Did he want to be a high school principal or perhaps work in district administration? He said he never saw his role as principal near the top of a hierarchy, nor a teacher’s a rung below on the ladder. “The difference makers are in the classroom. They really are,” Devine said. “I hope I can be one of those difference makers in the end.”

Russell Norman Mammel Russell Norman Mammel (Rusty) died of complications of Alzheimer’s Disease on September 15, 2011 in Dallas, Texas, at 85 years of age. He was born on April 28, 1926, in Hutchinson, Kansas, oldest of three boys born to Edwina and Vivian Mammel. After graduation from Hutchinson High School, he entered the Army and served in the European theater of WW II, discharged as a lieutenant. Upon his return he attended the University of Kansas, graduating with a BS in business. Rusty then joined his father in the family grocery business, Mammel’s Food Stores, Inc. He married Betty Crawford in 1949, whose family was involved in management of the rival local grocery chain, Dillon’s Inc. The marital alliance proved successful; Rusty and Betty had four children and were married for 45 years until her death from cancer in 1994. When the family business was bought by Nash-Finch Co. of Minneapolis, Rusty stayed on, moving to Iowa in 1964 and Minneapolis in 1967. Rusty loved his work but loved his family more, always happiest with children and grandchildren. He retired as President of Nash Finch in 1991. Wife Betty was always an avid and accomplished golfer; Rusty took up the game in self-defense and enjoyed playing with family and friends at home and in Palm Springs, CA, where they had a seasonal home from 1976 until 2003. Rusty developed Alzheimer’s disease, and lived in Dallas for the last many years of his life, avoiding the snow and enjoying local family as well as his companion Jeepers, a Caique parrot. Always funny and cheerful even as his illness progressed, he was loved by all that knew him. He is survived by his children Mark and wife Nancy Mammel of Dellwood, MN; Chris and wife Teri Mammel of Wellington, FL; Betsy Hoag of Dallas, TX; and Nancy and husband Ron Davids of Wellesley, MA. He was the proud grandparent of Gordon, Daniel and Martin Mammel (Mark); Kristina, Gregory and Melissa Mammel (Chris); Katherine and Marie Hoag (Betsy); and Abigail, Peter, and Victoria Davids (Nancy). He is also survived by his brother Dean Mammel and wife Rita of Dallas, TX. He is preceded in death by his wife Betty in 1994 and his brother Phillip in 2009. Visitation was held at 11:30am on Friday, September 23 in the Lakewood Cemetery Chapel in Minneapolis, MN; a memorial service followed at 12 noon with burial immediately after. Hobby helps Bloomington woman keep kids warm BY JONATHAN YOUNG • SUN NEWSPAPERS On the coldest days this winter, Bloomington resident Patricia Halloway will have warm thoughts because 88 children she’s never met will have hats. Halloway recently donated 88 hand-knit hats to the Coats for Kids campaign sponsored by Pilgrim Cleaners, Sun Newspapers, KARE 11, KFAN and Subway. Making hats to donate wasn’t Halloway’s idea. Halloway, who is retired, learned to knit in her 20s, and she finds it relaxing. She wanted to find a way to use her hobby to help others. “I just like to knit, and I just was looking for a way to knit something for somebody,” she said. Then an aunt who lives in Indiana told Halloway she knits hats for local charities. “I thought, ‘I could do that — I have all this yarn and all this time,’” Halloway said. So Halloway began knitting hats. Then she had to find somewhere to donate the hats. When she heard about the Coats for Kids campaign, she figured if children needed coats, they probably needed hats too. “I didn’t have coats, but I asked if they would want hats,” she said. That was about three years ago, and she has been making hats for the Coats for Kids campaign ever since. She has also begun donating knitted items to other charities. She said she makes about five or six hats a week in a variety of colors and sizes. Halloway hopes others will get involved however they can. “I’m sure that the 80-some hats I make come far short of the actual need,” she said. Halloway doesn’t think her contribution is worthy of notice, and she doesn’t brag about it. But she does find it rewarding to know children are benefiting from her work. “When it’s really, really cold, I like to think some kids are wearing them to keep warm,” she said. Others who wish to donate to the Coats for Kids campaign can drop donations off at any of the 25 Pilgrim Cleaners locations throughout the metro through Saturday, Oct. 8. The campaign accepts donations of all sizes for all ages, including adults. Coats COATS: TO NEXT PAGE

Student security – What every college student should know As college students get settled on campus, fighting fraud may not be their top priority. However, college students are susceptible to identity theft and the Better Business Bureau of Minnesota and North Dakota (BBB) recommends that they take seven simple steps to protect themselves on campus. In 2010, 8.1 million Americans – or 3.5 percent of the population – became victims of identity theft, according to the 2011 Identity Fraud Survey conducted by Javelin Strategy & Research and sponsored by the BBB. The average mean cost of identity theft is $631 and the average time to resolve identity fraud is 33 hours – time better spent studying. “Friendly fraud accounts for 14 percent of all ID theft crimes. This means that new roommates and friends have just as much potential to commit dastardly identity theft as foreign-based scam artists phishing on the Internet.
And identity thieves – friend or foe – think nothing of dumpster diving (or rifling through unattended trash cans) for unshredded paperwork or taking mail from desk tops or unlocked mailboxes. They can even cruise social networking sites looking for personal tidbits that may unlock a wealth of information elsewhere. “In this day and age, you can’t always trust your peers, said Dana Badgerow, president and CEO of the BBB. “It’s extremely important for students to be vigilant in monitoring bank and credit card statements to spot unauthorized activity. Sign up for security alerts on your accounts and have them sent to your mobile phone so you’ll know if any changes have been made to your account. The BBB recommends that collegebound students take the following seven steps to fight identity theft on campus: Send sensitive mail to your parents’

home or a post office box. School mailboxes are not always secure and are often easily accessible in a dorm or apartment. Store important documents under lock and key. This includes your Social Security card, passport and bank and credit card statements. Shred credit card offers and any paper documents that have sensitive financial information rather than just tossing them in a dorm trash can. Never lend your credit or debit card to anyone. Just say no if your friend wants to borrow your card or asks you to cosign for a loan or financing for items like a TV. Make sure your computer has up-todate antivirus and spyware software. Always install any updates and patches to your computer’s operating system or
browser software, which help keep your computer safe from any new advances by identity thieves online. Always check your credit or debit card statements closely for any suspicious activity. The sooner you identify any potential fraud, the less you’ll suffer in the long run. Check out and verify unfamiliar websites with the BBB. Look for the BBB Accredited Business seal along with other trust seals; click on the seals to confirm that they are legitimate. Check your credit report at least once a year. You are entitled to one free report a year from each of the three reporting bureaus: TransUnion, Experian and Equifax. Look for any suspicious activity or inaccuracies. You can do this for free by visiting www.annualcreditreport.com.

scratchy. If the smoke enters her lungs, she could face bronchitis and pneumonia. There’s also the risk of an asthma attack leading to respiratory arrest and death. “It’s maddening to think the city allows public spaces to be inflicted with wood smoke when many cities, including Edina, have banned tobacco smoking in parks,” said Mellum, who carries a mask with her at all times to avoid wood smoke inhalation. She said she would also like to see the city regulate wood smoke that enters sidewalks, streets and other public spaces from residential chimneys, backyard fire pits and restaurants’ wood-fired ovens. Plunkett Latham said she regularly used the fireplace in her home, but after researching the impact of wood smoke, now only burns in cases of emergency, such as a prolonged power outage. She said she understands the attachment to fire, which she dates back to caveman times, but said there are now better options. “It’s so much a part of our human evolution,” said Plunkett Latham. “People have a hard time accepting it has carcinogenic chemicals in it just like tobacco smoke does.” Centennial Lakes Park Manager Tom Shirley said a preliminary estimate pegged the cost to convert the two indoor fireplaces in Hughes Pavilion at $2,500 each. There is also an outdoor fireplace. At a joint meeting with the Energy and Environment Commission Tuesday, Sept. 20, city council members directed staff to further research the cost, including potential savings on the purchase of firewood. Shirley estimated the park spends about $800 a year on wood. Councilmember Joni Bennett said converting the fireplaces to gas would be an opportunity for the city to set a good example on public property. “This has been a bad year for wood burning,” Bennett said. “People can’t keep their windows open, at least in my neighborhood and the neighborhoods around ours.”

On Valley View Road from Wooddale Avenue to 70th Street, the city and Transit for Livable Communities are exploring the possibility of removing the center turn lane, reducing the road from three lanes to two in many parts, to make room for bike lanes. Public Works Director Wayne Houle said he is hopeful the organization will also be amenable to looking at other possibilities that might come up as well. “If we can prove our goal is to promote bicycling and to make it safe for cyclists, hopefully, they’ll look at it the same way, he said. “Our interest is seeing if we can still salvage a good project, Clark said. “Our hope is that we can collaborate and create something that everybody is going to be pretty excited about and is something that’s truly worth the investment.

Will Burke Burke, a junior at Edina High, finished seventh overall in the Roy Griak Invitational Sept. 24 at the University of Minnesota. He ran a 5K time of 16 minutes, 8 seconds as Edina took ninth in the team standings.

Runners from Eden Prairie, Edina, Minnetonka and Wayzata high schools will participate in the Victoria Lions Invitational cross country meet. Races will begin at 3:25 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 4, at the Chaska Par 30 Golf Course. Twenty-three schools sent runners to the Lions meet last fall. Shakopee’s Maria Hauger won the girls varsity race last year. Hot on her heels are Wayzata’s Anna French (sixth last year) and Edina’s Piper Bain (10th). Burnsville’s Cole O’Brien and Wayzata’s Josh Thorson should wage a battle for the boys title. – COMPILED BY JOHN SHERMAN

Hornets’ homecoming Edina High’s Nick Rallis and Hopkins High’s Andre McDonald could be teammates at the University of Minnesota next season, but as of this week they are still rivals. Hopkins will play Edina at 7 p.m. Friday, Sept. 29, in the Hornets’ homecoming game at Kuhlman Field. It is the second Lake Conference game of the year for both clubs and both are 0-1. Rallis, Edina’s all-purpose player, will most likely miss the game after injuring his shoulder in a 28-14 loss to Minnetonka Sept. 23. McDonald, a third-year starter at wide receiver, was an All-State player as a junior when he scored 19 touchdowns. He had the Royals’ only touchdown in a 56-7 loss at Eden Prairie Sept. 23. In another key Lake Conference game at 7 p.m. Friday, Sept. 30, Minnetonka and Wayzata will play for the Bay Bell trophy at Wayzata High Stadium.

LAKE SOCCER RACE Going into this week’s action, Edina led the Lake Conference boys soccer race with a 4-1-0 mark. Wayzata (3-1-0) and Eden Prairie (2-0-2) remained top contenders.
Seniors Caroline Ward and Meghana Vasireddy of the Edina High girls tennis team have one goal in mind for 2011 – winning a 15th consecutive state Class AA championship. They are so focused on the team that they gloss over the fourth and fifth positions they hold in the state Class AA individual rankings. “I haven’t really been following them,” said Ward following Edina’s 7-0 Sept. 22 Lake Conference victory at Hopkins. That comment drew a nod from Vasireddy, who hasn’t been following the rankings, either. “Everyone on our team is self-motivated to keep the [state-championship] streak
going,” said Ward. “It is pretty special to be part of this and we intend to keep it going.” Vasireddy, who lives in Golden Valley, open enrolled in Edina at the start of ninth grade. “I open enrolled mainly for the academics, but I also knew about the tennis program,” she said. “I really enjoy being on the team. Coach [Steve] Paulsen is great. He knows how to motivate us, and he’s always giving us new drills in practice.” Speaking of practice, that is where Ward and Vasireddy find some of their toughest competition. They often play against each other. The other two singles players in the mix, sophomore Maddie Boyer and ninth-grader Kelly Reger, can hang with the best of them. Most often, the singles lineup has Ward at No. 1, Vasireddy at No. 2, Boyer at No. 3 TENNIS: TO PAGE 31
The Edina High volleyball co-captain keyed the Hornets’ comeback win over Minnetonka Sept. 20. Down two games to one, the Hornets rallied to take the final two games. Edina followed up with a win at Hopkins Sept. 22. The victories are the first two Lake wins in six years for the Hornet volleyball program. The wins gave the Hornets a 9-4 overall record.
Deon Dorvil The Edina High defensive lineman had a sack and stopped a run for no gain in a Lake Conference football game Sept. 23 at Minnetonka. After that promising start, he went to the sidelines with a torn anterior cruciate ligament and the Hornets lost the game 28-14.
Natalie Haben The Edina eighth-grade hitter returned from an injury to lead the Hornets to a 23-25, 25-20, 22-25, 26-24, 15-13 Lake Conference volleyball win over Minnetonka Sept. 20 at the Edina High gym.
Jens Undlin Edina High’s boys soccer captain scored the winning goal in overtime Sept. 20 as the Hornets beat Minnetonka 2-1 in a Lake Conference match at Kuhlman Field.
Julia Withers The Edina High senior starred in a 102-79 swimming victory over Hopkins Sept. 22. She won the 100- and 200-yard freestyle races and swam on a winning 200 freestyle relay team along with Erica Evans, Cici Holmquist and Annie Thorndyke.

FROM PREVIOUS PAGE and Reger at No. 4. In the win over Hopkins, Paulsen mixed it up. Ward sat out, Vasireddy played No. 1 and Reger played No. 2. Boyer moved over to doubles, teaming with junior Morgan Marinovich. Junior Meghan Herring played No. 3 singles and sophomore Bridget Kluesner played No. 4 singles. Juniors Gretta Hellmuth and Caroline Ruwe played second doubles while sisters Lily and Meredith Ansel, both seniors, played third doubles. With the Section 6AA playoffs coming up next week, the Hornets are sharpening their focus. “Wayzata is in our section, and they’re the team that has given us the toughest match so far,” said Vasireddy. “It was nerve-wracking.” “Wayzata is better than in past years,” said Ward. “Their doubles are solid. We won the match 5-2, but two of the points came down to three sets.” Looking at other teams around the state that might be competitive with Edina, Ward said, “we’re looking at the usual rivals, Rochester Mayo and Mounds View.” Both Ward and Vasireddy plan to play college tennis next year, most likely at NCAA Division I schools. College coaches love to recruit winners, and that puts Ward and Vasireddy at the head of the class. Ward’s record this season is 13-3. Vasireddy stands 15-2. Both Edina seniors have been playing tennis since they were 9 years old, but they didn’t come into the sport for the same reason. “My mom played high school tennis in South Dakota and then played at the University of Minnesota,” said Ward. “She introduced me to tennis.” “When I was young, I didn’t get outside much,” said Vasireddy. “I liked to stay home and read, and I didn’t eat much. My parents wanted me to get some exercise, so they signed me up for tennis.” Vasireddy not only loves the sport, she’s eating healthy as well. “I eat a lot of carbs and drink a lot of milk,” she said. Paulsen makes the entire team aware of conditioning, nutrition, proper rest and all the other elements that go into making a championship team. The Hornets looked fit in the Hopkins match. In fact, they lived up to all the hype, taking all seven matches in straight sets. This is the time of year when it all comes together for Edina.

Hornets play good second half in loss to Minnetonka Homecoming is next for banged-up Edina BY JOHN SHERMAN • SUN NEWSPAPERS Early in the third quarter Sept. 23, the Minnetonka High football team held a 28-0 lead over the Edina Hornets. With a homecoming crowd of more than 7,000 cheering them on, the Skippers might have smelled running time, but Edina finished strong and closed the final margin to 28-14. “We could have made it easier on ourselves, but give Edina credit,” said Minnetonka head coach Dave Nelson. “We’ll enjoy this win tonight, and then we’ll decompress and starting getting ready to play Wayzata.” Minnetonka gave up a touchdown for the first time this year Friday night. In previous outings the Skippers had blanked Totino-Grace 28-0, Armstrong 24-0 and Bloomington Jefferson 43-0. Senior linebacker Beau Bates was disappointed that Minnetonka lost its shutout streak, but at the same time, he was proud of the team’s homecoming
performance. “We worked hard through the week, and we played a great first half,” he said. “It feels great to be 4-0. We have a big challenge coming up next week at Wayzata.” The Skippers led 21-0 at halftime on the strength of three rushing touchdowns. Rashad Cohen scored first on a 5yard run, and then quarterback Scott Benedict snuck one in from 1 yard out. Andre Eubanks scored on a 6-yard run. Cohen scored on a 21-yard run in the third quarter after Benedict and wide receiver Malcolm Moore put the Skippers in Edina territory on a 46-yard pass. Following that score, the Hornets mounted their first touchdown drive. Quarterback Mark Handberg scored on a sneak from the 1-yard line. With 3:22 remaining in the fourth quarter, Handberg hit Marley Allison with a 19-yard touchdown pass. Allison appeared to come down out of bounds, the Skipper coaches questioned it, but FOOTBALL: TO NEXT PAGE
Edina High’s girls swimming and diving team remained atop the Lake Conference standings with a 103-79 win Sept. 22 at Hopkins. The meet started with Edina winning the 200-yard medley relay. Adair Fogelberg, Elise Georis, Nora Steinhagen and Leslie Gates had a time of 2 minutes, 1.69 seconds. Edina’s success continued with Julia Withers’ victory in the 200freestyle. Rae Bullinger of Hopkins was second and Kate Segar of Hopkins finished third. Seventh-grader Kate Glover gave Hopkins its first victory of the meet when she swam 2:25.94 in the 200 individual medley. Edina rebounded with a 1-2-3 finish from Cici Holmquist, Erica Evans and Gates in the 50 freestyle. Yasmeen Almog of Edina edged Hopkins’ Jasmine Smith-Sharpe for first place in diving. Steinhagen and Anne Cavanaugh gave Edina a 1-2 finish in the 100 butterfly. Withers scored her second win of the meet by taking the 100 freestyle. Hopkins’ Glover gave her team a spark by winning the 500 freestyle and teammate Andrea Sanabria was second. Edina won the 200 freestyle relay with the team of Evans, Withers, Holmquist and Annie Thorndyke. The Hornets were also second in the relay with Harriet Van Metre, Natalie Bentley, Ann Marie O’Connell and Angela Rothmeier. Evans, Ella Lindberg and Fogelberg gave Edina a 1-2-3 finish in the 100 backstroke. Edina swam exhibition in the last two events, the 100 breaststroke and the 400 freestyle relay. Bullinger was the winner in the breaststroke. Hopkins’ winning 400 freestyle relay consisted of Segar, Sanabria, Glover and Bullinger. Edina won the JV meet against Hopkins 138-48.

Edina controls soccer destiny
FROM PREVIOUS PAGE the touchdown stood. Edina head coach Reed Boltmann said he was proud of the Hornets’ second-half comeback, which they accomplished without three of their best players. C.J. Johnson, who was previously lost with a knee injury, was on the sidelines cheering. Edina lost its top defensive players, safety Nick Rallis and tackle Deon Dorvil, to injuries Friday night. Rallis might be able to make it back this year. The initial diagnosis was a separated shoulder. Dorvil tore his anterior cruciate ligament and will need surgery. He definitely will not be back. “Minnetonka took it to us early,” said Boltmann. “We played much better in the second half. Our offensive and defensive lines were much more physical. It’s tough when players keep dropping, but our guys gave a good effort tonight.” Edina is 2-2 overall going into its 7 p.m. homecoming game against Hopkins Friday, Sept. 30. Hopkins, also 2-2, fell behind Eden Prairie 49-0 at the half Sept. 23 and lost to the Eagles 56-7.

Going into the last three matches of the Lake Conference boys soccer season, Edina High controls its own destiny. The Hornets are first at 4-1 with Eden Prairie (2-0-2) and Wayzata (3-2) close behind. “Every team has peaks and valleys,” said Edina head coach Dave Jenson. “Our conference loss was to Eden Prairie, 5-1. We have put that one behind us.” The Hornets will get another crack at EP when the teams play at 1 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 1, at Aerie Stadium in Eden Prairie. Edina was pressed into overtime to defeat Minnetonka 21 Sept. 20, and then the Hornets won 4-0 at Hopkins Sept. 22. “Against Minnetonka, Arin Arpinar scored from Jens Undlin to tie the score with four minutes left in regulation,” said Jenson. “Then Jens scored from David Smith in overtime.” Evan Panken, Stephen Johnson, Fahad Maow and Smith scored for Edina in the Hopkins match. “We’re not looking too far ahead,” Arpinar said after the match. “But we know we have a shot at going to state.” “Our team has Dome potential once we’re all clicking,” said Johnson, referring to the Metrodome, the site of the state semifinals and title match.
Right Way Painting Solutions After one of the most brutal winters we have encountered in the past 30 years, we have all found things that need repair or replacement on our homes. Many of us have needed to put off work being done to our homes do to economic hard times. Many of us also put off projects to save money in case things got worse. Our home values have gone down which makes it hard to even think about selling our homes. The reality is that we have to keep our property in good shape to maintain our values. Painting the exterior of our homes is by far the best value to preserving our wood surfaces and windows. We can also dramatically change the appearance of the inside of our homes by updating colors. Painting woodwork is a very affordable option compared to replacing old trim around our homes. In many older homes our windows are still good, but the old stain and varnish are not holding up any more. You can save thousands of dollars by painting these windows verses replacing windows. Updating your
basement family room can also be as easy as painting the paneling. I’m Paul Moore from Rightway Painting Solutions. I’ve been in the painting business for over 20 years. Being a former Shop Teacher, I have a good background in finishing and wood replacement. We do both residential and commercial painting. We do work for several Town Home Associations, Nursing Homes and Residential Properties. We give our customers great value by being able to not just paint. We replace or repair wood, repair and reglaze older windows and reside areas that need replacement. We also repair decks and re stain decks. On the inside we repair walls, remove wallpaper, enamel wood work and paint paneling. We offer a 2 year labor warrantee on our labor, provide references and we would be happy to give you a free estimate. For all of your painting needs give us a call at 612-8392239.

By: Ali Holman, co-owner of www.coreconditioningtraining.com I think we can all agree that eating is fun. Not only is it a way for us to socialize, reward ourselves and comfort ourselves, it also is the one area of fitness where people have the most trouble. Wouldn’t it be great to know that the choices you make are actually helping your fitness program? More importantly, wouldn’t it be even better to banish the word “diet” from your vocabulary? Chances are, if you are embarking on a “diet”, it will have a beginning and an end. The end is usually followed by slowly going back to old habits and ends you right back where you started. With our clients, we really encourage them to focus on a Lifestyle Change with room for “cheat meals” and realistic goals; which inevitably lead to lifelong results and without the emotional roller coaster of a diet.
Core/Conditioning Training’s List of “Fat Burning Foods”
eggs
low-fat dairy
Eggs are high in protein and low in calories. You may have heard all the warnings about eggs and your health: opt for eggwhites for the low-cholesterol, fatburning effect. Eggs also contain the vitamin B-12, a great supplement for breaking down fat cells.
Studies show that women who eat low-fat dairy products (such as non-fat yogurt and low-fat milk) three to four times a day lost 70 percent more fat than low-dairy dieters.
beans
oatmeal
Beans are one of the best sources of protein, fiber and iron. Some of the best beans to ear are: • Navy Beans • White Beans • Kidney Beans • Lima Beans
Oatmeal is loaded with soluble fiber, which helps reduce blood cholesterol by flushing those bad digestive acids out of your system. Skip the flavored oatmeals - you lose out on all the health benefits. If you must sweeten your oatmeal, do so by adding fruit.
olive oil BRING A FOOD DONATION TO SUPPORT SECOND HARVEST AND RECEIVE A RAFFLE TICKET FOR A CHANCE TO WIN HALFTIME PRIZES INCLUDING GRAND PRIZE OF A $100 GIFT CERTIFICATE TO SOCCER USA!
Free admission for youth wearing soccer jerseys! Parent tickets are just $1! Fan Giveaways!
Reduce•Reuse•Recycle
lean meats
Certain fats are good for you, and your body needs them. Olive oil is one of those “good fats.” It helps you burn fat and keeps your cholesterol down. One ounce of extra virgin olive oil contains about 85% of the daily value for monosaturated fat.
Search for lean meats - chicken (baked, broiled, grilled), fish and turkey - which are all high in protein. It is a good rule of thumb to consume at least one half-gram protein per pound of body weight each day. A chicken breast gets you well on your way, with about 22 grams of protein.
whole grains
interval training
Our body needs carbohydrates, despite what the fad diets tell you. Avoid processed carbohydrates such as white breads, bagles, pastas and white rice and look for whole grains that have not been processed and contain the fiber and minerals your body needs.
Interval training is defined as short, repeated bouts of intense exercise with minimal rest. You can burn major calories and get an all-over workout in less than 30 minutes. When you see people who are “cut,” chances ar they are partaking in interval training.
