Waters under the bridge Edina City Council approves assisted living facility plan for second time BY KATIE MINTZ • SUN NEWSPAPERS The Edina City Council gave the go-ahead to The Waters Senior Living for the second time. A site plan amendment and preliminary and final plat for the controversial assisted living and care facility were approved Wednesday, Aug. 3. Waters, in partnership with Colonial Church, will construct the three-story building just north of Highway 62 adjacent to the church. It will include 97 oneand two-bedroom assisted living apartments, 28 memory-care units and 14 advanced care suites. The project narrowly received initial approval last summer following hours of heated testimony. It was put back through the public hearing process this summer when the developer asked to reduce central common areas by 28 feet to allow for low-income housing.

Two new ways to get a sugar fix in Edina Locally-owned Alix in Candyland, Pandolfi enter sweets scene BY KATIE MINTZ SUN NEWSPAPERS There is no shortage of sugar, spice and everything nice in Edina. Local ladies are keeping the city’s sweet tooth satisfied with two new stores, Alix and Candyland and Pandolfi Candy, Gelato and Gifts.
Alix in Candyland Lynn Evinger and Alix Noonan said customers don’t know where to look first when they enter their whimsical store. Is it the Mad Hatter hanging lights, tail-wagging Cheshire Cat or perhaps candy every color of the rainbow? Below a towering tree and giant mushroom, thousands of sweets varieties are on display in the “Alice in Wonderland” themed shop. Alix in Candyland, 5400 France Ave. S., opened Tuesday, Aug. 2. “It’s meant to be an escape from reality for kids and
Alix in Candyland, one of two new sweets shops in Edina, features more than 1,000 different items, including these brightly colored candies. (Photo by Katie Mintz) adults as well,” Noonan said. “They can get a piece of candy that’s not too expensive and it’ll bring a smile to their face.” The Edina women worked
with a theater set designer and cabinetmaker to transform the former office space over the past few months. The building is owned by Noonan’s father Edward
Noonan of Noonan Construction, Inc. The company remains at the south end of the building. SWEETS: TO PAGE 10

Edina cleaner must pay overdue $350K water bill Waldorf Nevens Cleaners faces water shut-off under repayment agreement BY KATIE MINTZ • SUN NEWSPAPERS An Edina business that racked up more than $350,000 in delinquent water bills has reached a repayment agreement with the city. Waldorf Nevens Cleaners is required to pay $20,000 each month toward its debt as well as pay all future water bills on time in the agreement approved unanimously by the Edina City Council Wednesday, Aug. 3. If it does not, the city will terminate its water service with 10 days notice. As of July 19, Waldorf Nevens owed the city roughly $351,400, including approximately $191,300 for unpaid water bills certified to Hennepin County for collection in 2009 and 2010. According to Hennepin County Taxpayer Services, a judgment was made in April for approximately $66,700 in delinquent taxes and utilities at 7500 Amundson Ave. If that amount is not paid by the end of a three-year redemption period, the property will enter tax forfeiture. City Attorney Roger Knutson advised the council earlier this spring that if the property is sold in this way, there may not be enough equity to cover delinquent taxes and utilities, as well as satisfy the mortgage. City Manager Scott Neal said he sought the agreement with the hope Waldorf Nevens would be able to continue operations, and the city would receive some payment for its service. Under city code, the
city could have previously terminated water service. “We’re trying to be good stewards of the public purse but also trying to be humane to a small business that’s operated in this community for 40 some years and employs 50 full-time people,” Neal said. In May, the city council authorized certification to the county of another approximately $117,400 in delinquent bills for 2011. City Finance Director John Wallin said monthly payments made under the agreement would be applied to that amount before its final certification to the county in November. The agreement will remain in place until all debt to the city has been repaid. A message left for Waldorf Nevens President John Zahhos was not returned at press time. According to its website, the company provides dry cleaning and laundry services to individuals as well as hotels and other commercial accounts. In addition to its Edina headquarters, Waldorf Nevens has two storefronts in Minneapolis and one in St. Louis Park.

Edina boy with acting bug cast in zombie flick Tommy Propson, 12, stars in local indie film ‘Discursion’ BY KATIE MINTZ • SUN NEWSPAPERS An Edina boy found one sure way to beat the summer doldrums. Tommy Propson, 12, has spent his days filming “Discursion,” an independent flick set in the wake of a radioactive disaster. Writer, director and producer Nicole Kruex, who also stars opposite Tommy, describes the film as “a psychological thriller with elements of horror and science fiction.” It follows a woman, played by Kruex, as she travels across the country avoiding the sick and infected in search of loved ones including her son, played by Tommy. The soon-to-be seventh grader at Valley View Middle School said he wasn’t scared during filming, which began in November and is set to wrap Saturday, Aug. 13. It’s clear the blood is only makeup and the screams are acting, but he KAREL SMITH 612-986-3704
said the finished product would be another story. “It’s fun, but if I was watching the movie I’d pee my pants,” he said. Kruex, who first met Tommy after casting him in a short film, said he’s a professional on set. “He’s on his game every shoot and we have nothing but compliments for his performance,” said Kruex, a Ham Lake resident. “He often has very real reactions, and he takes direction well.” Tommy has been in front of a camera since the age of 5 months when he modeled infant wear. Mom Carin Mehan said her daycare provider, who had a daughter in the business, suggested they give it a try. “Everybody thinks their baby is adorable, but within a few weeks we got a call from Target,” Mehan said. Tommy made his movie debut when he was 9, appearing in the 2009 film “Into Temptation,” where he’s credited as a “mean communion boy.” Minneapolis screenwriter and director Patrick Coyle noticed Tommy’s talent as an extra and upgraded him to the speak-

Zombies FROM PREVIOUS PAGE ing role. The film featured stars like Jeremy Sisto of “Law & Order,” Kristin Chenoweth of “Glee,” and Brian Baumgartner of “The Office.” “It was the final scene of my film ‘Into Temptation’ and I needed a bully,” Coyle said. “I liked his look and I liked how professionally he conducted himself on the set. He did a great job.” Tommy said that was one of the most gratifying moments after spending hours waiting on different sets as an extra. “When you’re an extra, you think it’d be nice, but it really takes a lot of work,” Tommy said. This summer, Tommy also filmed scenes in another local movie, “Ultimate Redemption,” about Twin Cities professional wrestler turned pastor Jeff Warner. Tommy played one of Warner’s childhood friends. He has worked in television, commercials and on stage, and can be heard on the radio in advertisements for Explore
Minnesota as well. Tommy said he sees acting in his future, but is content to stay in local productions. For now, he does most of his work on weekends when it doesn’t interfere with school. “I don’t think I’m going to be a multimillionaire star, but it’s nice to do in your free time,” said Tommy, who also plays football, basketball and lacrosse. Still, he said he has friends that want him to get them in the business after seeing the fruits of his labor. With money he’s made acting, he bought a laptop to edit his own films. He shoots them with sister Helen, 9, who has also done some extra work, their cousins and friends. Kruex said “Discursion,” which was filmed in Minnesota cities including Plymouth, Maple Lake, Minneapolis and St. Paul, has been requested for the Twin Cities International Film Festival and the Scotland International Film Festival. It will also be available on DVD in October with potential for national distribution. Information about its Minnesota premier will be made available on discursionmovie.com.

A true story – this time, the fire was real The morning of Wednesday, Aug. 3, began like most mornings, as I poured myself a cup of coffee. I was going to Excelsior mid-morning, so I decided to check my email and get a little writing done before heading out. Looking back, I still haven’t figured out if that was a good or bad thing. I started to work on my column about how important family is. I had just returned from my cabin in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan for some much needed time away. That column is temporarily put on hold for a more pressing issue. About an hour and a half later, the fire alarms started going off in my apartment building. Not an uncommon occurrence — they seem to go off numerous times a month. About 15 minutes into the racket, I remember thinking how annoying it was. I told myself, I’m not leaving until I smell smoke. Not long after that foreshadowing thought, a friend in the building busted open my door, frantically asking me to help get her dog on the second floor. Taken back by the alarm on her
CHRIS DILLMAN Excelsior/Shorewood Community Editor face, it dawned on me that this might be the real deal. Sure enough, upon entering the second floor, things did get real. Thick smoke filled the halls and the adrenaline began to take over. Not knowing the origin of the blaze, the “Rambo” in me took hold and it became a life or death mission. We retrieved the dog, which appeared unaware of the calamity unfolding, and then we made it downstairs. I went for my computer and camera to bring outside. Since there was no smoke on my floor, I pondered making a second run in for the flat screen TV, but I’m sure some would advise against that. I put my life — read: camera and computer — into my car not knowing if I would have to make a hasty retreat. That’s when I noticed people on the third floor taking pictures with their phones out the windows. They were seeing
something I wasn’t, I realized, and within seconds smoke started to plume above the roof. “Ohhhh… this can’t be good,” I thought. The smoke began to get thicker and darker, and visions of hellish flames rising as the place burned to ashes amidst the terror of people flared through my mind. Well, that didn’t exactly happen, but what did happen was through the beauty of social media I was able to spread the scene unfolding, only to have people “like” the images. Doesn’t matter how funny my captions might be, you are not supposed to “like” things like that. I digress. Then the sirens: Never before in my life had I been happier to hear the sounds of rescue on the way. A crowd drew as the Minneapolis Fire Department arrived and attacked the blaze. The fire department was able to put the fire out before it was able to spread too far. However, the apartments adjacent to the burned unit are no more. As expected, people started getting to the bottom of this.
LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Is Congress getting it? To the editor: As I write this Thursday, Aug. 4, the Dow Jones Industrial is down more than 500 points for the day and will be down more than 700 points for the week. I wonder if the U.S. Congress is getting the message that Wall Street didn’t like their 11th hour two-party debt ceiling bill last week, or will they try to spin the situation as a global crisis? My message to Congress: • Get back to Washington now! Keep in mind that your unemployed constituents do not have a month’s paid vacation this year.
And now for the kicker: Confirmed by the management of the property, some crazy woman, who probably is in her mid- to late 20s, must have thought eviction meant “Let’s burn this place down.” Upon hearing this, I knew right away whom they were talking about. Hearing from the neighbor under her, she had apparently purposely flooded the unit below her (might have something to do with getting evicted). She’d also thrown her trash in the halls the night before, but that obviously wasn’t justice enough. Burn the building down, that’s the only way to solve that. Honestly, people never cease to amaze me. She even left her cat in the unit. Sickening. Hopefully she’ll have a “hug-me” jacket soon. All in all, nobody was hurt, and I have to give credit to the fire departments that protect us and can respond quickly to calls. Without them, it would be back to the days of throwing buckets of water on a building that is becoming an inferno. Risking their lives to save others, there still is good in people.

Protecting the mega-rich while paying no taxes and allowing their savings to be kept safe off shore. 2. Each year, the Rotary Club of Edina raises money at a fall fundraiser to support its projects and award grants. In 2010, more than $71,000 was raised for service projects and local and international grants. During the last Rotary year, the club made grants of more than $54,000 to those in need. Consider being a part of history on Aug. 30 when a Wichita, Kan., hairstylist Patrick Lomantini makes a Twin Cities stop during his national hair-cuta-thon while completing 50 haircuts in 50 states in 50 days. He will be at Jungle Red Salon, 1362 LaSalle, Minneapolis, for 12 hours on Tuesday, Aug. 30. All haircuts will be free, however a suggested donation of at least $20 is recommended. That money will go to a local humane society in each state with the Minnesota stop supporting the Golden Valley-based Animal Humane Society. Info: 612-870-0653 or jungleredsalon.com.

At AirBroom Minnesota In Excelsior Can Help
How does your chimney look? Are the bricks crumbling? Does it have White or Black exterior staining? Are you afraid to use your fireplace because you’re not sure how safe it is? When was the last time you used it? The professionals at AirBroom Minnesota Fireplace and Air Duct Cleaning in Excelsior can restore both your confidence and your chimney. Did you know that water causes more damage to masonry chimneys than fire? Your chimney, unlike other parts of your house, is constantly exposed to the elements. They are generally constructed of brick, mortar, tile, steel, and iron. All of these materials suffer deterioration as a result of prolonged contact with water. Freeze and thaw cycles so familiar here in the Twin Cities cause stress on the chimney. Water that has penetrated expands and contracts. Left unchecked it will cause interior and exterior damage to your home and masonry chimney. Some of the damage that can be caused includes: 1) spalled and broken exterior brickwork, 2) deteriorated masonry and metal firebox assemblies, 3) rusted dampers, 4) decayed mortar, cracked or missing flue liners, and in the worst case scenario damage to adjoining walls, ceilings, and woodwork. There are three main ways to prevent water damage. 1) Install a chimney cap. This is the most inexpensive measure to prevent water penetration to the flue and inside chimney elements. We sell and install locally manufactured caps for as little as $99. 2) Repair or replace a damaged chimney crown. The crown sits atop your chimney and covers and seals it from the flue liners to the chimney edge. Many chimneys are built with an inadequate crown constructed from common mortar mix. Mortar is not designed for and will not withstand years of prolonged moisture exposure without cracking and chipping which allows water to penetrate the chimney. A proper crown is constructed of a Portland
cement mixture and formed to provide an overhang drip edge. This assures the water will shed helping to prevent erosion in the mortar and brick of the chimneys surfaces. Keeping the crown “watertight” and shedding away from the sponge like masonry elements that the chimney is built of is the most important element to preventing deterioration. At AirBroom Minnesota we use the industry leading line of Saver products to build and repair chimneys. Use of these products allows us to pass on manufacturers material warranties of up to 15 years to our clients. 3) Waterproof your masonry chimney and crown. Most masonry is porous and will absorb large amounts of water. Brick acts like a sponge absorbing water and wicking it to the chimney interior. Products we use are specifically developed for use as waterproofing agents on masonry chimneys. These are vapor permeable – which means they allow the masonry to breath out but not in. This allows water that has penetrated the chimney to escape while preventing additional water from entering from the outside. Non vapor permeable sealers commonly available should never be used because they trap moisture inside actually accelerating deterioration. We use a special permeable sealer with a 10 year consumer warranty to protect your chimney. Doing this before deterioration occurs can save you hundreds or even thousands of dollars in future repairs. Water damage to chimneys is usually a slow subtle process. The problem is generally not obvious until it has become quite serious. Although these prevention measures may cost you a few dollars they can save you a lot more by preventing large future masonry repairs. The Hartmann’s at AirBroom Minnesota in Excelsior offer free no obligation repair estimates in the Western Metro area. Call John, Jim, or Lynda today to arrange a free no obligation estimate. Visit us at AirBroomMinnesota.com or call us at 952.545.2254. As a bonus, repair jobs over $750 scheduled with us prior to August 15th receive $100 off when you mention this article.

Waters
Council OKs dome study
FROM PAGE 1 Jay Jensen, principal and senior vice president with Waters, said savings from slight modifications to an entry area, offices, café, wellness room, dining area and other gathering spaces would enable the company to subsidize seven units for seniors making less than 50 percent of the median income. The amended site plan was approved 41, Councilmember Joni Bennett dissenting, with a condition that the developer sign a proof of parking agreement showing where additional surface spots could be added onsite if the need arose. Bennett and neighborhood residents said they believed the PRD-5 zoning – a planned residential district for “rest homes, convalescent homes and nursing homes” – applied to the project was incor-
The Edina City Council also unanimously authorized a budget of up to $20,000 to study the feasibility of building an indoor athletic facility Wednesday, Aug. 3. The Edina Park Board will guide the study, and was authorized to establish committees and subcommittees to assist. rect and thus parking requirements met under the zoning might not be adequate. “I could not support this last year and have heard and read nothing that caused me to change my evaluation of it,” Bennett said. She said the church should have brought its plans forward a few years ago when community members were engaged in updating the Comprehensive Plan, which shapes future development in the city. Resident Mary Ann Meyer, one of sev-

The action follows a July work session in which a group of interested residents pitched a public-private partnership to build a sports dome on public land in Edina. eral to speak against the project, said approval was not fair or reasonable. She said parking is already an issue in the neighborhood due to athletics at Countryside Parks. “This is a significant impact on the surrounding neighborhood, an impact on our quality of life,” she said. “We’ve been around this thing a number of times and I’m not going to revisit the issues or argue them,” said Councilmember Mary Brindle, who gave

the other vote against the original project due to its location away from commercial centers. “They are what they are. I will just tell you this facility, as I said when we voted last time, this facility is needed and more like it are needed.” She voted in favor this time, noting the original project would still move forward if the amended site plan were not approved. Another condition of approval requires Waters to submit an action plan for a 100year flood event, as the property is located in the 100-year flood plain. The council also voted 4-1, Bennett dissenting, to approve the preliminary and final plats, subdividing the land from the Colonial Church. Waters will be required to pay a $5,000 per unit park dedication fee – $695,000 total – before the city releases the final plat for filing with the county. That money will likely be use for improvements at Countryside Park. Construction on Waters is expected to begin next spring.

CC runners in training When Lake Conference cross country runners report for official practice Aug. 15, coaches will see who has been putting in the miles this summer. Wayzata High boys coach Bill Miles saw his team win state last season. Talented senior Josh Thorson leads the Trojans. Edina held the No. 1 state ranking for a portion of last season and returns junior Will Burke. Kyle Anderson is Minnetonka’s pack leader and Sam Jacobwith assumes the same role at Hopkins. Eden Prairie won the state Class AA girls title last fall and returns Hannah Jeter and Carlin Schulz from the state lineup. Wayzata’s girls team is a contender with Anna French leading the pack. Piper Bain of Edina is an All-State candidate going into her senior year. Anne Daly leads the Minnetonka girls. – COMPILED BY JOHN SHERMAN

Fall sports starting date Fall sports practices for all area high school teams will get underway Monday, Aug. 15. Several area teams won state titles last season, including the Wayzata High football squad. The Trojans lost defensive coordinator Matt Lombardi, who is the new head coach at Maple Grove High School. WHS has speed in the backfield with Erik Roti and Mitch Underhill and a top defensive player in linebacker Ryan Poppitz. Minnetonka will challenge the Trojans and Eden Prairie in the Lake Conference with a fast and talented group of receivers and running backs. Scott Benedict returns as the starter at quarterback. Senior Charles Webb is an All-State player in the Skippers’ defensive backfield. Hopkins will try to overcome the loss of AllState quarterback Billy Gregg, who graduated after setting numerous single-season and career passing records. All-State receiver Andre McDonald is the Royals’ marquee player. Eden Prairie was upset in the playoffs by Brainerd last fall, but comes back strong with 1,000-yard rusher Andrew Larson. Nick Davidson, a transfer offensive tackle, is being recruited by more than 20 Division I schools. Drake Michaelson, Tyson Reinke and Anthony KingForeman lead Eden Prairie’s defense. Edina’s top returning skill-position players are Marley Allison, C.J. Johnson and Nick Rallis.

MARK YOUR CALENDAR Bloomington, Minnetonka and St. Louis Park have qualified for the state Class A amateur baseball tournament, which will be played Aug. 11-21 in Bloomington and St. Paul.
Aagaard’s single in the bottom of the seventh inning gave the Boys of Summer a 10-9 victory over the Cruisers in the Edina 35 & Over slowpitch softball playoffs at VanValkenburg Park.
Max Cartwright The former Edina High swimmer will join the University of Minnesota men’s team this fall. At the state Class AA meet in March, Cartwright set the all-time state record in the 100-yard breaststroke with a time of 54.44 seconds.
Steve Gables Gables’ home run over the left-field fence Aug. 3 at VanValkenburg Park helped the Boys of Summer in their 10-9 Edina 35 & Over slowpitch softball victory over the Cruisers. Kevin Lynch also hit a home run for the Boys of Summer.

Boys of Summer flash 35 & Over playoff magic Aagaard’s single sends Cruisers to the curb BY JOHN SHERMAN • SUN NEWSPAPERS When the Boys of Summer met the Cruisers in the Edina 35 & Over slowpitch softball playoffs Aug. 3, fans had a feeling it was going to go down to the wire. Both teams bunched hits together. Both teams made big defensive plays. In the end, it came down to one swing of the bat. Jim Aagaard, catcher for the Boys of Summer, struck the winning blow in the bottom of the seventh inning. His RBI single ended the contest. “Wouldn’t you know it?” said pitcher Jack Meenan of the Cruisers. “My old
neighbor got the winning hit against me.” “I fought off a high breaking ball to go 1-for-4,” said Aagaard. “It wasn’t crisply hit, but that ball had eyes.” After those brief comments, Aagaard said he had to get over to Bunny’s, a local food and drinking establishment, for what he termed “the post-game review.” Someone mentioned he might be buying. Aagaard was not the only hero for the Boys of Summer. Kevin Lynch and Steve Gables hit home runs over the left-field fence at VanValkenburg Park. Lynch is a former NBA player who grew up in Bloomington and played for BOYS: TO PAGE 24

Nick Weidner Braemar’s Junior boys golf team won the state championship for the second consecutive year Aug. 1-2 at Pokegema Golf Course in Grand Rapids. Weidner, who played for the Edina High golf team in the spring, placed sixth overall. Other members of the Braemar team are state individual champ Matt Cichowski of St. Louis Park, Nick Nielsen of Jefferson and Brett Draxler of Benilde-St. Margaret’s.

ESOX bow to Bandits in Riverview League series BY JOHN SHERMAN • SUN NEWSPAPERS Two solid pitching performances fell by the wayside for the Edina ESOX in their Riverview Amateur Baseball League playoff series with the Bloomington Bandits last week. Bloomington took advantage of three unearned runs in the bottom of the first inning to defeat Edina 7-3 in the first game of the best-two-of-three Aug. 2 at Red Haddox Field. “Mark Schroeder pitched well enough to win,” said Edina manager Denny Scanlon. “But we played sloppy early in the game. Mark ended up with 12 strikeouts.” Edina had even a better performance in the second game of the series Aug. 4 at Braemar Park. Erik Olson allowed two runs in the second inning then shut out the Bandits for 10 consecutive innings. But he lost 6-2 when Bloomington scored four runs in the top of the 13th. “I told Erik after the game that it was one of the best pitching performances I’ve seen,” said Scanlon. “We had some chances in extra innings, but the hits didn’t fall.” Olson relied heavily on his fastball and had the Bandits on their heels until he tired in the 13th.
“We played well,” said Scanlon. “The Bandits are the type of team that won’t beat themselves. Throughout the series, they did a better job of bunching their hits together than we did. And they had a lot of two-out hits.” Edina’s leaders at the plate, first baseman Robert Dunlop and third baseman Kirk Keneally, each had three hits in the series. The ESOX, who are sponsored by General Sports, were 10-16 overall this season. They won their first Riverview playoff series from the Westside Bombers, 5-0 and 12-7. “It was a little bit of a down year,” said Scanlon. “Our new players had a chance to get their feet wet in town ball. We are looking to move ahead with a core group of young guys who graduated from Edina High – Andy Bartz, Erik Nelson, Jack Schechinger and Danny Smith. Scanlon said he has a solid pitching staff already in place with Schroeder, Olson, Danny Smith and Chad Volbert. Adding a big bat or two is a priority for 2012. Bloomington, Minnetonka and St. Louis Park will be the Riverview’s three representatives in the state Class A tournament, which begins this week.

Baglien’s remarkable coaching feat has stood the test of time BY JOHN SHERMAN • SUN NEWSPAPERS Seven years ago, when it looked like Braham might break Edina’s record of 69 consecutive boys basketball wins, I talked with retired Edina coach Duane Baglien. Every day of his life, it seemed, someone reminded Baglien that his Hornets had won 69 in a row. But he wasn’t rooting against Braham, which had won 64 straight at the time of our conversation. “If they break the record, I’ll be happy for them,” he said. “You never expect that a record like that will last forever, although this one has lasted quite a while.” As it turned out, Eden Prairie stopped Braham short of Edina’s record during a game at the Bethel Holiday Tournament. One of the most famous records in Minnesota high school sports was still intact when Baglien lost his battle with melanoma and passed away Aug. 1 at age 85.
JOHN SHERMAN Edina Sun-Current Sports Editor
In addition to winning 69 straight games, Baglien had the distinction of winning three consecutive state basketball titles (1966-68). Men who played for Baglien during his Edina tenure, said there was a lot more to his success than winning trophies. Baglien’s first great player at Edina, 1964 graduate Bryan Grohnke, talked about Baglien via phone from his home in the state of Virginia. “He was one of a kind,” said Grohnke, who led the Lake Conference in scoring with a 26.1-point average his senior year. “Coach Baglien made everyone on the team feel important – all the way to the 12th guy. I was the one that happened to score the points, but he
knew he needed all of us to win. As a result, our second team always played well. Looking back on it, one of the best teams we played was our second team.” Grohnke said part of Baglien’s genius was his ability to scout opponents and put together a game plan. “My senior year, we played Hopkins in the district finals,” said Grohnke. “During the season, we had two really close games with them, winning by one and two points. In the district game, we started out in a 1-3-1 half-court press and took Hopkins out of the game. We did the same thing to Minneapolis Central in the region finals and knocked them out. “I remember we practiced that halfcourt press all the time, but we hardly ever used it in a game. When we needed it, it really worked.” Baglien coached Grohnke in sophomore football and varsity basketball and baseball. “Coach Baglien wasn’t a yeller, although he would raise his voice at times,” said Grohnke. “He had a unique
ability to get everyone to give 110 percent.” Baglien retired from coaching after the 1968-69 season to go into administration at Edina High. He was able to watch his four sons – Rolf, Scott, Ross and Kevin – play sports at Minneapolis Washburn. One wonders how many titles Baglien might have won if he had stayed on as Edina’s basketball and baseball coach. A little-known fact is that he coached the Hornets to the state baseball title in 1968 with Bob Firth and Mark Untiedt as his star players. Edina has been blessed to have many, many great coaches since it opened its doors in 1949. But make no mistake about it, Duane Baglien was one of the best. Will his 69-game winning streak ever be broken? Or even challenged again? That’s hard to say. I have always said the test of a great coach is his ability to win when he’s expected to win. Duane Baglien did that, and he did it often.

No Minnesota community has collected more state boys high school hockey titles than Edina. To make way for 10 newly designed championship banners, the Edina Hockey Boosters are auctioning off the original championship banners, which have hung in Braemar’s West Arena. Bids will be taken Monday, Aug. 29, following the dinner for the Ikola Cup golf fundraiser at Bearpath in Eden Prairie. Info: 612-492-4817 (Casey Hankinson).
The Edina Under-19 boys rugby club, consisting of Edina High School students, finished the 2011 season as the nation’s 18th-ranked team, according to Rugbymag.com. Edina played in the Minnesota title match, losing to the Southside Minneapolis club 15-14.
BY JOHN SHERMAN • SUN NEWSPAPERS Tony Olson of Federated Insurance came to bat in the bottom of the sixth inning with his team down 7-6 against the Bruce Avenue All-Stars in Edina 35 & Over slowpitch softball. There were runners on second and third base in the Aug. 3 game at VanValkenburg Park. Olson’s thought process told him that if he hit a deep shot, it would score at least one run and it might even end up going out of the park. His fly ball was caught in deep center field, and what happened next was something you don’t normally see in 35 & Over softball. The runner on third base tagged up and scored, but the surprise occurred when David Clemens, the runner on second, reached third and then made a mad dash for home plate.
He slid across home plate, barely beating the relay throw. That gave Federated Insurance an 8-7 lead. Bruce Avenue went scoreless in the top of the seventh and that was the ballgame. “Late in the game, you’ve got to force the action,” Clemens said. “I saw that the ball was bobbled for just a second,” said Pete Martin, who was coaching third base. “David was running hard, so I waved him home. He made a phenomenal slide.” With the win, Federated Insurance advanced to the final four in the Edina 35 & Over playoffs. Federated Insurance’s roster includes six members of Edina High’s Class of 1988, and they’ve played softball together for years in their hometown. “We are averaging more than 10 runs a game, and we had a 7-3 record during the regular season,” said Clemens. “We lost to the first-place team [the Love Handles] by one run. I’d say we’re pretty level with them.”
Hornet soccer car wash The Edina High boys soccer team is planning a car wash fundraiser from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 13, at the Holiday station at Vernon Avenue and Highway 100. Tickets for the car wash may be purchased from any player or at the event for $5. Info: 952-412-5675 (Roberta Arpinar).

Like some of the other teams in the league, the Cruisers have a theme. Edwards is a Saint Kris Edwards, a former Edina High allconference baseball pitcher, has signed a pro contract to play for the St. Paul Saints. The right-hander, who graduated from EHS in 2005, recently picked up his first pro victory when the Saints defeated Sioux City. Edwards’ road to the pros was not exactly clear sailing. He had arm trouble in 2007 and underwent Tommy John surgery to repair the damage. Two years later, he played on an NCAA Division III national championship team at the University of St. Thomas.

The camaraderie with the guys is the best part of this.” “A lot of the guys we used to play with aren’t around anymore,” said Meenan. “We have slowed down a little bit. Our [37] record wasn’t great, but we’re still having fun.” For the Cruisers, hope springs eternal. “We got off to a slow start, but won three of our last five,” Sinclair noted. The playoff loss ended the season for the Cruisers, but don’t be surprised if you see those fancy collector cars rolling back into the parking lot at VanValkenburg next summer.
