Yellow Ribbon success Various Twin Cities communities gain recognition for participation in military support program
BY BILLIE JO RASSAT SUN NEWSPAPERS This year at Minnesota’s great get together the city of Richfield is well represented in the fine arts. Richfield resident for 25 years, artist, teacher and coach Robert Teslow has entered a piece of his work in the photograph category at the Fine Arts Department of the Minnesota State Fair Annual Art Exhibition. Not thrilled with the name he put on his entry; Teslow took a very average subject and transformed it into a work of art he now calls “Pigensteine.” “When I saw the eyelashes, they were so human like, it struckWeekly me,” Teslow said about theSuper pig heSavings! photographed. During the 2010 Minnesota State Fair Teslow took pictures of the animals; he was particularly intrigued by the lines and shapes the pig held. “Once I put the image on a Weit e kjust l y Sblew u p e rme S aaway,” vings! screen, Teslow said. Richfield resident heads Minnesota State Fair nostalgia BY BILLIE JO RASSAT SUN NEWSPAPERS As the Minnesota State Fair is in full swing, one Richfield resident is always looking for some one to talk with her about state fair nostalgia. Jan Bankey has been a dedicated visitor of the state fair since she was a little girl. Now, as museum curator of Heritage Exhibits at Heritage Square, Bankey’s job is to maintain all of the state fair memorabilia collected and donated to Heritage Exhibits since the first Minnesota State Fair in 1859. Bankey’s work started 20
years ago after she donated a piece to the museum and asked Gale Frost, the curator at the time, how she could become involved. Frost told her if she really wanted to get involved, she needed to come back the next day with a bucket; she has been working there every summer since. Her work at the museum begins in June. She puts in 12-hour days before and after the fair begins and works over 14 hours a day during the 12 days the fair is open to visitors. “We maintain all of the stuff out here, from painting the wheels on the train BANKEY: TO PAGE 14

COMMUNITY NOTES Helpers needed at Arc’s Value Village
FROM PAGE 1 Richfield City Councilmember Tom Fitzhenry, have been working diligently to form the Richfield Yellow Ribbon Action Plan. “It is definitely a big deal that the people of Richfield have put in this much time and effort to get this program ready,” Staff Sgt. Aaron Hoska said. Within Richfield’s Action Plan, their mission statement ensures the community will support military families. To do this the Richfield Citizens Committee will act as a liaison between community and the military. The Richfield Citizens Committee will provide for Richfield relationships between military personnel, community leaders, resource providers and volunteers. Using the network, the community will increase its awareness to the challenges service members and their families deal with as a result of deployments. In attendance to celebrate Richfield’s accomplishments included Richfield Mayor Debbie Goettel, Fitzhenry, City Manager Steve Devich, Fire Chief Wayne Kewitsch, President of Richfield/Bloomington Credit Union Patrick Brekken and other proud Richfield residents

Above, on Aug. 24, Minnesota Gov. Mark Dayton, spoke to the communities of Richfield, Cottage Grove, Eagan, Inver Grove Heights, Plymouth, Rosemount, Lower St. Croix Valley cities including Lakeland, Lakeland Shores, Lake St. Criox Beach, St. Mary’s Point and Afton, and the organization of Inver Hills Community College giving thanks and praise for becoming Beyond the Yellow Ribbon ready. Below, Dayton, left, Richfield Mayor Debbie Goettel, Richfield City Councilmember Tom Fitzhenry, President of Richfield/Bloomington Credit Union Patrick Brekken and Minnesota National Guard Maj. Gen. Richard Nash pose for pictures in honor of Richfield’s National induction into the Beyond the Yellow Ribbon Program on Aug. 24. (Photos by Billie Jo Rassat • Sun Newspapers) and business professionals. Proud of his city’s accomplishments, Devich said, “I think it is just great. It is a wonderful step for the city to take because Richfield was built from veterans retiring after WWII and Richfield has always had a strong connection to our veterans.” The national recognition for the city of Richfield is complete, but like Dayton said this is just the beginning of the Beyond the Yellow Ribbon initiative in helping military families.

Shedding light on the new referendum On Aug. 15, the Richfield School Board passed a resolution directing the administration to prepare ballot language for a proposed operating levy that will be voted upon by Richfield residents at the Nov. 8 election. The board has authorized asking the average homeowner in Richfield to increase their taxes by $119 a year or about $10 a month. The average home in Richfield is valued at $185,800. This levy would increase school district revenues for the 2012-2013 school year by approximately $1.9 million. There will be one question on the ballot. It will read: “The board of Independent School District No. 280 (Richfield) has proposed to revoke $301.40 per pupil of the school district's existing referendum revenue authorization and to replace that authorization with a new authorization of $717.40 per pupil. The proposed referendum revenue authorization would be applicable for ten years unless otherwise revoked
ROBERT SLOTTERBACK Superintendent Richfield Public Schools or reduced as provided by law.” Voters will be asked to vote either “yes,” to support, or “no.” I am sure our voters wonder what this money will be used for. This money will allow us to avoid further major reductions that we believe would cripple the great momentum we are now seeing in the Richfield schools. For each of the past three years a greater and greater percentage of Richfield residents chose to attend the Richfield schools. Over the past two years our district’s overall enrollment has increased and is one of only three west suburban districts to see this trend. And as we all know, this enrollment increase is not because new homes are being built in our community. Last year our largest grade level was kindergarten and this
coming year we have already enrolled an even a larger kindergarten. Academic successes are apparent. We can rightfully claim that we are closing the performance gap, unlike many districts that are seeing this gap widen. Children who attend our district can participate in nearly every activity without needing to “make the cut.” The climate in our buildings is wonderful, with very, very few discipline issues. However, over the past decade we have had to reduce our yearly budgets more than $9 million total. The state has essentially frozen our revenues for the next two years. If this referendum is not passed we expect to reduce our budget over $6 million in the foreseeable future to keep our fund balance at a very modest level of four percent. The people of Richfield are rightfully proud of their school
district being fiscally prudent. We have accomplished successes while spending less than all of our surrounding adjoining districts. But there is a limit to how we can reduce further without impacting quality. The board of education weighed all of these factors before deciding to ask voters for more money. My role in this process is to explain and inform the community. Obviously, there is too much information about this to cover in one short article. Over the next few months I will be meeting with many groups. If you would like to have me come to a neighborhood or church meeting or to any type of organization, please let me know and we will get that scheduled. Or if you have individual questions, do not hesitate to contact me. We greatly appreciate your support. Slotterback can be reached by calling 612-798-6011 or email at Robert.slotterback@richfield.k12. mn.us.
Rethink recycling: recycling on the go BY ANGIE TIMMONS GUEST COLUMNIST It’s more popular than ever for Minnesotans to recycle at home, but do you keep it going while you’re traveling or out and about? Many of us take road trips, attend family get-togethers, and go on vacation during the last few weeks of summer, and it’s important to find ways to recycle along the way. It can be surprising how much waste one person can produce when traveling, but implementing a few simple things to reduce waste and conserve resources will minimize your environmental footprint. Here are some easy things you can do to make a difference: — If possible, use public trans-
portation while traveling, or carpool with others who are going to the same destination. — Use electronic tickets whenever possible to avoid paper waste. — If you don’t see recycling bins at your destination, ask the person or company in charge. Hopefully, a friendly suggestion will encourage them to implement a program. — Bring a bag for your own recycling. If you’re spending the day traveling or staying somewhere you know won’t provide recycling opportunities, pack a bag for your recyclable items and recycle them when you get home. — Keep an eye out for recycling bins along your route. Gas stations, rest areas and parks
often have a place you can deposit your recycling rather than hauling it all the way home. — As you shop for groceries and supplies for your trip, look for environmentally-friendly packaging and pack items in reusable containers. — If you’re hosting a gettogether away from home, be sure to put out paper bags or containers for recycling near the trash bin and label them clearly. Hopefully, your guests will follow your lead and do the sorting for you. — Choose or encourage the use of reusable or recyclable materials (cups, plates, utensils, etc.) in all your activities. With a little forethought, it’s easy to make it a habit to recycle
on the go and the results are worth it to protect the environment. Think about what you can do to help while enjoying your summer celebrations, vacations and travels. For more tips on recycling and waste options, visit RethinkRecycling.com.

The main attraction will be playing with the interactive house models, that feature three different home-made model homes that you can add doors, windows, room extensions or chimneys to make the home of your dreams. “The models are like a Mr. Potato Head

with their bucket of parts,” Larson said. The new “Richfield House and Home” exhibit will allow visitors to see the differences between the popular Richfield style homes such as the Cape Cod, rambler and split-level. “If we treat the houses in Richfield like the historical objects they are, we can tell a story,” Larson said about the unique features Richfield homes have. To become more relevant in the age of the computer, the Richfield Historical Society will also be updating their website. “Additions to the website will include online exhibits for those who cannot make it to the center,” Larson said. Larson and her team of volunteers and interns are focused on developing more child-friendly programs and more educational programs on the website, according to Larson. Combining the new with the historical, Larson hopes that she will light a fire for questions and make the Richfield Historical Society relevant in today’s culture. “We are changing the way we look at history and changing the way the community will interact with history,” Larson said. For more information about the Richfield History Center and Museum, call 612-798-6140 or visit richfieldhistory.org.
Jodi Larson, the Richfield Historical Society Director, demonstrates one of the many activities in the new exhibit at the Richfield History center and Museum. The new exhibit, Richfield House and Home, will have a Grand Opening from 7-10 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 10, at 6901 Lyndale Ave. S., Richfield. The event will be free for the whole community. Right Way Painting Solutions After one of the most brutal winters we have encountered in the past 30 years, we have all found things that need repair or replacement on our homes. Many of us have needed to put off work being done to our homes do to economic hard times. Many of us also put off projects to save money in case things got worse. Our home values have gone down which makes it hard to even think about selling our homes. The reality is that we have to keep our property in good shape to maintain our values. Painting the exterior of our homes is by far the best value to preserving our wood surfaces and windows. We can also dramatically change the appearance of the inside of our homes by updating colors. Painting woodwork is a very affordable option compared to replacing old trim around our homes. In many older homes our windows are still good, but the old stain and varnish are not holding up any more. You can save thousands of dollars by painting these windows verses replacing windows. Updating your
basement family room can also be as easy as painting the paneling. I’m Paul Moore from Rightway Painting Solutions. I’ve been in the painting business for over 20 years. Being a former Shop Teacher, I have a good background in finishing and wood replacement. We do both residential and commercial painting. We do work for several Town Home Associations, Nursing Homes and Residential Properties. We give our customers great value by being able to not just paint. We replace or repair wood, repair and reglaze older windows and reside areas that need replacement. We also repair decks and re stain decks. On the inside we repair walls, remove wallpaper, enamel wood work and paint paneling. We offer a 2 year labor warrantee on our labor, provide references and we would be happy to give you a free estimate. For all of your painting needs give us a call at 612-8392239.

Bloomington art show honors 40 years of education BY MIKE HANKS • SUN NEWSPAPERS An art show that is also a belated anniversary celebration opens today in Bloomington. “On the Training of Painters: The Atelier’s Past and Present” is actually a two-venue showcase paying homage to the history of a Minneapolis art school. The show features an exhibition of paintings and drawings at the Bloomington Center for the Arts. By mid-September the Atelier Studio Program of Fine Arts will exhibit additional works at its Minneapolis school. The joint exhibit is intended to honor the school’s founder and its 40th anniversary, albeit two years after the fact. Atelier, French for workshop, is a style of painting that is distinguished by its teacher-student relationship, teaching fine draftsmanship and painting skills by melding formal academic training with the influence of French impressionists. The Atelier traces its lineage to 1748, and is honoring its founder Richard Lack through the exhibition. Lack founded the school in 1969 as Atelier Lack in Uptown Minneapolis. He retired in 1992, but the school continued as the Atelier Studio Program of Fine Arts, according to co-director Dale Redpath, who studied under Lack. Today the school has a full-time fouryear program and has part-time students who take evening classes at the
school, Redpath explained. “It has really been a hub for the realist movement in the country,” she said. Pieces by former graduates and Lack will be on display, as well as Lack’s educational predecessors, William McGregor Paxton and R.H. Ives Gammell. Works of Paxton, who died in 1941, are difficult to obtain, but the Atelier was able to obtain one piece on loan for the exhibition, according to Redpath. Approximately 80 artists will be represented by the more than 125 paintings and drawings in the exhibition. Although it was envisioned as an anniversary show in 2009, collecting artwork and compiling historical information about the school was a slow process that took longer than planned, she noted. In addition to showcasing artwork, the exhibition will illustrate the specific steps taken by Atelier artists when rendering their realistic drawings and paintings. A catalog commemorating the exhibition’s artwork and detailing the Atelier’s history will be available for purchase at both exhibition locations, Redpath said. An opening reception at the Bloomington Center for the Arts is 6-8 p.m. tonight, Sept. 1, at 1800 W. Old Shakopee Road. The second opening at the Atelier is 69 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 15, at 1681 E. Hennepin Ave., Minneapolis. Redpath and Co-director Cyd Wicker will speak 7 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 22, at

One of Teslow’s fabric installations was featured at the event.
FROM PAGE 1 has been producing pieces since he was 5 years old. “I can recall sitting with my father on the kitchen floor and we would draw on shelf paper. He made me a sail ship,” Teslow said. Since then, Teslow has been making art using every medium possible. His most notable works include fabric installations of which he began the conception and building over his home and neighborhood block in the early 1970’s. After his fabric installations gained notoriety into the mid- to late 1970s, Teslow was featured at the Uptown Art Fair, PB Plaza and private homes throughout the Twin Cities. In 1979, when the Hennepin Center of Arts, now newly remodeled and now named The Cowles Center for Dance and the Performing Arts, opened and, the wife of then Minnesota Gov. Walter Mondale, Joan Mondale, presented the introductory speech while Teslow provided the a special fabric installation for the ceremonial ribbon cutting. Fast forward to the present, on Sept. 9-11, at the Grand Opening Gala Weekend of The Cowles Center for Dance and the Performing Arts, a creative fabric installation from Teslow will again be featured during the ribbon cutting ceremony. Even with his artistic success, Teslow has kept grounded by devoting apart of himself as a teacher and coach. Teslow has combined his love of

As busy as Teslow may seem, he has found time to volunteer in many organizations such as Richfield Arts Commission, Minnesota College of Art and Design Board of Trustees, Art Educators of Minnesota and Alpine Coached Association. “Sometimes I feel like I have been going through life with blinders on because I have been on the same course, but I am thrilled how everything has turned out,” Teslow said.

Edythe L. Pizzala Edythe L. Pizzala, died at Hillcrest of Wayzata, Wayzata, Minn. on August 22, 2011 – four years after the death of her beloved and handsome husband of 65 years, George E. Pizzala. A resident of Bloomington, Minn. for more than 53 years, Edythe was born August 12, 1923 in Fresno, Calif. to George and Anna Eurich. Edythe fondly remembered her early years growing up on an orchard farm with her 22 siblings and half-siblings. She graduated Roosevelt High School, Fresno, Calif. in 1940. Edythe had a beautiful singing voice and, along with her sisters, performed live and on the radio on many occasions. Edythe met her husband George in 1942 and it was love at first sight. They married 3 days later in Reno, Nevada. Thereafter, Edythe lived the life of an Army wife, following George to many duty stations around the world, including Japan and Europe. While stationed in Germany, Edythe organized the first Boy Scout Troop there for American military families, as well as for her own two young sons at the time, Dennis and Keith. Edythe and George settled in Bloomington, Minn. in the late 50s. In 1964, Edythe joined the Hennepin County Welfare Dept. as a Home Management Counselor. In this capacity, she taught home management skills – such as budgeting, child care, home maintenance and nutrition – to low income mothers. Edythe thrived in this role for 20 years and was recognized by the then State of Minnesota Governor for her succcessful pilot programs dealing with young unwed mothers. After retiring from the Welfare Dept. in 1985, Edythe started her own business called PIZZAZ, a consulting company that taught seniors transitional skills needed for successful retirement. Edythe had a unique flair and artistic eye, which were expressed in many creative outlets throughout her life. She became a talented watercolor and oil painter. She designed beautiful rooms, gardens and floral arrangements. In her 70s, she started Edie's Interior & Floral Design, selling her paintings and elaborate silk flower arrangements and wreaths to local galleries and businesses. She later taught painting classes for friends and neighbors. Edythe was very outgoing and made lifelong friendships with people of all ages with whom she shared her love of gardening, cooking, antiques, music, and singing. An adventurous spirit, she was always eager to learn new hobbies and skills, whether it be tai chi, calligraphy, or making flavored olive oils and vinegars. Edythe is survived by her son, Keith (Jody), daughter, Carolynn Sherby (Jim); grandchildren, Tina Floersch, Lisa Mogler, Nicolas Pizzala, and Brielle Pizzala; and great-grand- children, Sarina, Ashley, Antonio, Dominic and Adrianna. Another son, Dennis, preceded her in death in 1993. Private interment at Fort Snelling National Cemetery. A memorial gathering will be held at Washburn- McReavy Dawn Valley, 9940 Bush Lake Rd., Bloomington, MN, Thursday, Sept. 8, 4-6 PM. Memorials to www.alzheimers.org. Hennepin County looks to continue success of truancy program About 200 schools participated in program last year BY MARC INGBER • SUN NEWSPAPERS Pleased with the success of its initial efforts to combat truancy, the Hennepin County Attorney’s Office will conduct its be@school program for a second full school year beginning this month. The program is designed to use all of the social services and legal tools available in the county to make sure students are in school, every day and on time. In its first year, 199 of the 256 schools in Hennepin County that participated in a study reported using at least some element of the be@school program. “History has shown us that if you don’t get to school, you don’t get an education,” Hennepin County

Attorney Mike Freeman said. “And if you don’t get an education, you don’t get a job. And then we are likely to see too much of you in the criminal justice system or the social welfare system. And I don’t like either option.” The be@school program requires schools to send a letter and make phone calls to a student’s parents when unexcused absences begin piling up. At six unexcused absences, the school refers the child to the program and a parent group meeting is called with officials from the school, attorney’s office and possibly social service groups. Be@school coordinator Tamiko Thomas said the meetings were designed to be a proactive approach to the problem and teach the families about educational neglect and truancy. “It depends on each case, but mostly it’s an opportunity for them to receive support and get education on what the law says about education attendance,” she said. “Families do find the meetings to be helpful.” If more absences occur, the pressure is ratcheted up, including filing of educational neglect or truancy
Bankey FROM PAGE 2 to dusting off the hanging pictures,” Bankey said. With all the hard work associated with her job, Bankey’s favorite part is meeting all of the people that visit her exhibits and share their memories of the state fair. reports. There are various reasons why students miss school frequently, Freeman said. Barriers can include transportation problems or a lack of good clothes. Sometimes children are asked to baby-sit their younger siblings while their parents are at work. One of the goals of be@school is to refer families to social service agencies that can help alleviate these types of problems. Freeman said 43 percent of elementary students with six to 12 unexcused absences had no more after 90 days in the program. In a survey, 82 percent of staff members whose schools participated believed be@school was effective in cutting truancy and unexcused absences. State law requires students to be in school until they are 18 – they can be officially withdrawn with parent consent if they are 16 or older. Be@school is offered to every school in Hennepin County – most schools that participate have a staff member whose duty is to be in charge of the program at the site. Thomas said it was a “more innovative approach to addressing a lack of school attendance. “It’s clarifying the expectations for families.”

Working, breathing and eating at the state fair each year, Bankey has developed a unique love for all things Minnesota State Fair. “It is hard to go home from the state fair each day. Richfield hosts North St. Paul in football season opener Spartan Stadium’s new turf field will be on display with free admission for fans BY GREG KLEVEN • SUN NEWSPAPERS Spartan Stadium should be packed for Richfield’s opening football game against North St. Paul this week. Richfield’s new artificial turf field will be on display for thousands of fans expected to attend the 7 p.m. Classic Suburban Conference battle between the Spartans and Polars Thursday, Sept. 1. The Richfield Quarterback Club will hold a tailgate barbecue party before the game. Admission will be free for the Spartan opener to give citizens a chance to see the stadium refurbishments. Richfield defeated North St. Paul 13-7 last year, and Spartan head coach Todd Olson expects another tough challenge from the Polars. “North St. Paul uses a lot of offensive formations and has had a good passing game over the years,” said Olson. “But we expect North St. Paul to run more than it has in the past. “We are very excited about our team. We have a lot of experience back on defense and on our offensive line.” Richfield’s three captains will lead the charge this fall. Senior Eric Jimson (6-foot-2, 190 pounds) will be used on

Senior Mick Dhein (5-10, 185) will lend stability at running back and linebacker. Senior defensive lineman Mike Dyer (5-7, 260) also returns as a three-year regular for the Spartans. Offensively, Richfield will count on
veteran leadership from senior tackle Dan Beyel (6-3, 275), senior lineman Jordan Smith (6-0, 230) and junior wide receiver Deshawn Jones (6-4, 190). Senior linebacker Andrew Perlich (62, 180) will lead the defense. Junior Robert Holloway (6-0, 280) is an experienced lineman. Junior Corbin Halbur, Perlich and
junior Duncan Pederson are competing to start at quarterback. Richfield prepared for its opening game by scrimmaging Park Center, St. Louis Park and Minnehaha Academy on Aug. 27. “We had a good scrimmage and executed well considering it is so early in the season,” said Olson.
Spartan boys soccer squad loses 2-0 in season opener Richfield goalkeeper Hernandez is impressive against Mpls. Washburn BY GREG KLEVEN • SUN NEWSPAPERS Richfield’s opening boys soccer
game ended in a close loss, but Spartan head coach Brad Johnson was impressed by the play of his athletes. Host Minneapolis Washburn defeated Richfield 2-0 Aug. 25, scoring one goal in each half. “Our goalkeeper Eduardo Chavero Hernandez was outstanding and must have stopped five point-blank shots in that opener,” said Johnson. “I also
thought senior midfielder Moses Mugwanja and senior defender Mike Jungers had strong games. “The difference between our teams was that Washburn was physically stronger than we were. But our guys worked hard and played well.” Richfield scrimmaged on its new turf field Aug. 27 and the Spartan players and coaches were impressed with the surface.
“We scrimmaged on the new field against Columbia Heights and everybody was excited about that,” said Johnson. “It will be a faster-paced game on that flat surface instead of playing on the grass field.” Richfield will play Apple Valley at 7 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 1, at Johnny Cake Ridge Park. The Spartans return home to battle Mahtomedi at 5 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 6.

Other Spartan varsity players are senior Maddy Hanson, senior Madison Andrews and junior Emily Mylander. Against Minneapolis Washburn, Rachel Youngquist won 5-7, 7-5, 10-5 at third singles (the third set was a super tiebreaker). Pulice and Swanson won 6-2, 6-0 at first doubles. Lam and Carlson pulled out a victory at third doubles for the final Richfield point. Richfield will host Tartan at 3:30 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 8, in a Classic Suburban match. “Mahtomedi and Henry Sibley are usually the strongest teams in our conference,” said Moseley. “And they should be tough again this season.” Richfield’s girls tennis team will host its annual “100 Sets” fundraising event at 10 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 10, at the high school courts. The event is open to all Richfield community tennis players.

Hannah Olson of Richfield leads the pack during a cross country race last season. Olson, now a senior, opened the 2011 season with a third-place finish in the Powderhorn Invitational Aug. 27. (Submitted photo)
Richfield’s cross country teams opened their season at the Powderhorn Invitational meet Aug. 27. Hannah Olson led Spartan runners with a third-place finish. Olson completed the 1.5-mile course in a time of 8 minutes, 55 seconds. She sparked the Spartans to a sixth-place finish in the 10-team field. Erin Brault placed 19th (9:48) and teammate Sarah Nygaard was 21st (9:54). Other Spartan finishers were Hannah Adams (29th, 10:08), Leah Mohn (43rd, 10:41), Sarah Schroeder (48th, 10:46) and Erica Strom (54th, 11:02). Richfield’s boys team placed fifth of 10 teams at the Powderhorn Invitational. Jake Bauer led the Spartan pack with a 14th-place time of 11:10. Alex Brault was 23rd (11:20) and Calvin Bergen came in 27th (11:27), Max Hamilton placed 28th (11:28) and Jake Beaudet finished 45th (11:46). Also competing for the Spartans were Lucas Blanchard (48th, 11:51) and Jon Libra (51st, 11:58). “Everyone ran fast for us in the Powderhorn meet,” said Richfield coach Marty Huberty. “The kids worked together as a group and pushed each other.” Richfield’s boys junior varsity team placed fourth of nine teams. Three Spartans finished in the top 15. Nathan Libra was third (11:57) and Spencer Bainbridge placed 10th (12:13). Ben Nygaard was 15th (12:25). Marie Rupiper aided Richfield’s girls JV squad with a 33rd-place time of 11:30. Ian Stemper was fifth in the ninthgrade race as Richfield finished second of nine teams. “Overall, it was an awesome day for the Spartans,” said Huberty. “The season is young and the outlook looks bright.” Richfield runners will compete in the Dakota Classic hosted by Eagan at 3 p.m. Friday, Sept. 2.

If the shoe fits, Otto will toss it Women’s horseshoe pitcher excels in state and world competition
Holy Angels program moves forward under Betton’s leadership
BY GREG KLEVEN • SUN NEWSPAPERS Sara Otto started tossing horseshoes during a weekend retreat at a Brainerd-area resort five years ago. Soon the Minnetonka resident decided to join the Bloomington Horseshoe Club in 2006 and hasn’t stopped throwing ringers since. Otto has steadily moved up the class ladder in state and national competition. Otto finished fifth in the Women’s Class C Division at the 2011 World Tournament in Monroe, La., in July. “I started slowly in the tournament and began to turn things around the second day when I had a 4-1 record,” said Otto. “I didn’t get a trophy this year but did average 48.17 percent ringers in the tournament.” Otto moved up one class this year after winning the World Women’s Class D title in 2010 with a 14-1 record and 53 ringer percentage in the tournament held in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. Otto got her first taste of world competition by placing sixth in the Women’s Class J Division in 2007. That tournament was conducted in Ardmore, Okla. “I actually began pitching horseshoes in junior high through our summer recreation program in Wadena, where I grew up,” said Otto. “I played in league as well as state tournaments. “Then 15 years later, I picked up the sport again while our group stumbled upon the horseshoe courts at a Brainerd resort. My girlfriends and I decided to join a league and thought the Bloomington Horseshoe Club would be centrally located. So, we became members.” Otto learned quickly that tossing ringers consistently required hard work and plenty of practice. She established a six-percent ringer average in 2006 and that average doubled the next year in 2007. In 2008, Otto improved her league ringer percentage to 31.65 and competed in five local tournaments winning four and placing third in the other. She won the state title in her class that year. Ringers started coming more frequently for Otto in 2009 as she won the World Class G title in Springfield, Ill., with a 15-0 record
Stars look for better fate in upcoming football season

Sara Otto practices her horseshoe pitching technique. She has developed into a world-class pitcher. Otto is a member of the Bloomington Horseshoe Club and a Minnetonka resident. (Photo by John Sherman • Sun Newspapers) while throwing 52.33 percent ringers. Otto’s involvement in the sport increased as she became a member of the Minnesota Gopher State Horseshoe Pitchers Association and the National Horseshoe Pitchers Association. Otto also joined a 2008 winter league in Greenfield and took on editing duties for the Gopher State Horseshoe Pitching Association. In addition, Otto now serves as a regional director for the National Horseshoe Pitchers Association. “All my accomplishments are fantastic, but it is the competition, fun and getting to know other pitchers that have kept me pitching in this lifelong sport,” said Otto. Otto is proud of her association
with the Bloomington Horseshoe Club, formed 30 years ago and home of many state and world champions including Dale Lipovsky and his father Lenny. Bloomington’s club is one of approximately 30 leagues across Minnesota. Interested pitchers can visit minnesotahorseshoes.com for information on local leagues. “I’m always amazed by how many people have played horseshoes at family picnics or in the backyard,” said Otto. “They are always surprised to hear that it is an organized sport on a state, national and international level.” Outside of horseshoes, Otto is Vice President of Development at the Lupus Foundation of Minnesota, located in Bloomington.
The 2010 football season was a transitional one for Holy Angels. Ray Betton took over the Stars’ head coaching duties last fall. It took awhile before his players were on the same page of the playbook with the coaching staff. Holy Angels was 4-6 last season, with most of those losses by seven points or fewer. The Stars defeated St. Louis Park in the first round of the Class 4A, Section 3 playoffs before losing 14-7 to St. Thomas Academy in the semifinals. “I feel comfortable with our team’s progress in preseason practices,” said Betton. “We have put in more of our offensive and defensive sets than a year ago. “Last season, we ran more basic plays and kept it as easy as possible for the players to pick up.” Holy Angels will employ its updated offensive and defensive schemes at 7 p.m. Friday, Sept. 2, as the Stars travel to Chisago Lakes for the opener. “Our defensive players must read their keys well against a Chisago Lakes offense that runs the option offense used by such colleges as Air Force and Navy,” Betton said. “Each player has to know his responsibility in order to contain that type of offense.” Betton liked what he saw of his team during a scrimmage with Hill-Murray, Benilde-St. Margaret’s, DeLaSalle and Holy Family Aug. 27. “I thought we were the most physical team in that scrimmage,” said Betton. “We showed more speed and strength than last season. “We will be stronger up front on the line.” Five captains will provide leadership for Holy Angels football squad. Senior captains are linebacker T.J. Patrias (5foot-11, 205 pounds), lineman Dan Pfab (6-2, 260), running back Will Pagel (5-11, 155) and lineman Andrew Easton (5-8, 270). Junior linebacker/running back Mikias Alipate (6-0, 202) is also a captain. Holy Angels’ returning offensive starters are Pfab, Easton, Pagel, senior tight end Brett Pierce (6-6, 260) and junior running back Anthony Baysah (5-8, 160). Stars’ returning defensive starters are Patrias, Pierce, Pfab, senior outside linebacker Sean Dornik (6-0, 190) and senior safety Parker Bredow (5-9, 165). Betton has added two new assistant coaches – Chuck Gilbert (defensive line) and Doug Ekmark (offensive line, offensive coordinator).
