Cobbler finds ‘open arms’ in Richfield after leaving Southdale

Richfield students find healthier meals in lunch line School nutrition staff push fruits and vegetables, ditch dessert BY ANDREW WIG – SUN NEWSPAPERS Karen Sherman saw the commotion in the corner of the lunchroom and went to investigate. Turned out, there was no trouble. Everything was fine, but there was new artwork to check out. “They were all gathering around these posters. They were so excited,” said the head cook at Richfield Dual Language School. The posters are one prong of Richfield Public Schools’ recent push to put healthier food in front of students — and get them to eat it. The campaign for a more nutritious school day began two years ago, according to Supervisor of Food Services Deb LaBounty. She had just arrived on the job, “and I thought, holy cow, we’ve got to have more fruits and vegetables.” At that time, LaBounty said, “a lot of kids didn’t know their food comes from the ground.”

Ralph’s Shoe Service was one of Southdale Center’s first tenants, but now it has to move BY ANDREW WIG SUN NEWSPAPERS When management at Southdale Center told the owner of Ralph’s Shoe Service he would have to move shop, Bill Roase didn’t know where he and his business would go. But his shop’s future would not be in doubt for long. Lunch FROM PREVIOUS PAGE “I think that kids have really changed, and they do have more sophisticated palates, so to speak,” she observed. “They go out and try different things.” For instance, LaBounty has found kids have responded favorably to the raw jicama sticks, which look like frozen French fries and taste like a mild sweet onion. Wraps, also more prominent recently, “are flying off the shelves,” she said. In a random sampling, the thirdgraders sitting around one table in the Dual Language School lunchroom supported the nutrition professional’s claims, offering no complaints as they finished their lunches. “It’s better,” Alicia Nelson said of the new menu. “I like fruit more than dessert.” Of the handful of third-graders in the vicinity, no one balked at her comments — even with no adults listening in. This would not surprise LaBounty. “The kids eat better fresh than they do cooked,” she said. “They really do.” Richfield schools are not alone in their new healthier offerings. Schools across the nation will soon have no choice but to take similar measures with new USDA nutrition standards expected soon. The Healthy Hunger-Free Kids Act of 2010 stipulated that the USDA establish new school nutrition guidelines that would increase the amount of fruits, vegetables and whole grains served at school while reducing starches and sodium. Although exactly what the new standards will demand is still unclear as the pending regulation passes through the gears of Congress, Richfield schools

should be all set — aside from some tweaks — before the healthier standards are enforced, LaBounty said. This is not to say the traditional staples of hot school lunch have been discarded. The pizza and chicken nuggets still make the lunch counter lineup, just not as often. “Basically,” LaBounty said, “it’s about variety.” Even French fries still have their place, she maintained. “There’s nothing wrong with potatoes. You just don’t have to eat them everyday.” As school cooks shake up the menu, they will have to do so on a budget, within which Richfield should have no problem staying, according to LaBounty. “You can make changes without spending a lot of money,” she said. One way to conserve funds, she added, is to reduce waste. Gone are the days of lunch ladies slopping mashed potatoes and gravy onto students’ trays. Students now can grab only what they want and will eat, which is another central tenet of changing lunchtime philosophies in Richfield. “You can’t push food on kids,” LaBounty said. The thought has led to LaBounty’s latest idea, the “no thank you cup,” which would allow students to sample new and exotic offerings and see what they like. “Doesn’t that sound like a good idea? They might try that little bit, where if you put a bunch on their tray, a lot of times it’s just going to turn them off,” said LaBounty, who asks the little lunch eaters, “Just try a little bit.” LaBounty hopes the new ethic of nutrition will spread beyond the schools and into the homes. “You want children to go home and say, ‘Hey Mom and Dad, can we have some broccoli with our dinner?’” LaBounty proclaimed, chuckling at the scenario. “That’s the goal.”

Ralphs FROM PAGE 1 Penn Avenue South in Richfield. The surrounding area is known as Penn Central, and there the cobbler — he calls himself that — found an environment in stark contrast to his previous confines. The area, predominately populated by small, owner-operated shops, is “kind of like going back to my grandfather’s roots when he was on 50th and Xerxes,” Roase said. It was there that Roase’s grandfather, Ralph, started the shoe repair shop before it became one of the original tenants in the country’s first fully enclosed indoor shopping center in 1956. But Roase heard the news in midDecember: His lease would be terminated at the end of the year to make room for a new food court. Hearing this, he said, “was the worst thing in my life that ever happened to me.” It was about a week before Christmas and “I couldn’t believe what I was hearing.” But his customers had his back. Soon, they were recommending alternative locations. Richfield’s Penn Central area was one of them.

Ralph’s Shoes Service will take over the space formerly occupied by Accessory Computer Service Center in this building near West 66th Street and Penn Avenue South. The area, Penn Central, is largely populated by owner-operated shops like Ralph’s. (Photo by Andrew Wig – Sun Newspapers) There were other locations available within the shopping center, but Ralph’s was already repaying a loan from a previous move within the mall. So Roase,

bitter about being “forced out,” decided to take his shop out into the wider, unenclosed world. His exploration had taken him to a

vacant art studio near 66th and Penn, when he met Marv Wenzel, owner of the music shop across the street from the studio, Homestead Pickin’ Parlor, which specializes in all things folk. The computer repair shop next to his own shop was moving, Wenzel told the cobbler. “I went over and looked and thought, this is the perfect size,” Roase recounted. He would soon sit down with the building’s owner Vern Veit. The conversation was a departure from those with his previous landlord. “It was one of the best talks I’ve ever had,” Roase said. “He’s just a down to earth man, you know. Not like these big corporate people. It’s totally different.” It was the day before Christmas Eve, Roase’s birthday, a week after he was told he had to move, and he had a handshake deal to move his operation a mile down 66th Street. “We’re happy to see them come into the neighborhood,” said Veit, who also owns Southtown Plumbing across the street from Roase’s new location, plus the multi-tenant commercial building housing the plumbing business. Other neighbors have echoed the sentiment. “I’ve never had so many open arms,” Roase rejoiced. Ralph’s Shoe Service fits the area pop-

Sending on a (belated) letter Here’s hoping for some Christmas joy, or confusion, either way Heard enough feel-good Christmas stories? If so, stop reading. This one’ll bore you. If not, well, fasten your seatbelts... A number of weeks ago, I was chatting with my father-in-law on various and sundry topics when the conversation came around to a recent possible mail theft. According to Ron, he’d found some mail open on the side of the road. Some were business mail, some were personal notes. In all

DANIEL CALLAHAN Sun-Current Managing Editor cases, the envelopes had been opened and the contents rifled through. The lack of a postmark indicated the letters had never been through the postal system. Being the upstanding citizen that he is, Ron contacted the senders of the letters and let them know what he’d found and to be aware that any checks or cash that may have been in them was gone. In the case of one birthday card, the woman who’d sent it informed him it had not contained any money, but thanked

him for letting her know. Ron did something special with that card that would likely elicit a laugh or a confused “huh?” from both the sender and the recipient. Something I’m not going to tell you yet. Kind of ruins it to hear the punch line before the end of the joke, you know? Hang tight. I took in the whole story, we chuckled for a moment and I promptly didn’t think about it again until last week. Then I found an unsent Christmas card lying in the gutter outside the Sun Newspapers office. Clearly this letter had seen better days. Frankly it looked like it’d been run over by at least a few vehicles and was thoroughly dirt-stained. The edge of the envelope had been ripped as

though someone might have been looking for money inside. “Aha,” I thought to myself, “here’s a column topic.” As is the habit of my generation, I used the Internet to find the phone number of the sender, and gave her a call. Not to be anti-climatic, but she didn’t answer. I left a message and as of this writing, I haven’t heard back. But, given the opportunity to both spread post-holiday cheer and add a little playful confusion into somebody’s day, I copied the actions of my father-in-law and tucked a dollar bill into the card, resealed it and sent it on its way. Hopefully that brightens one stranger’s day at least for a moment. Or confuses the heck out of them. Both work for me.

To resolve or not to resolve, that is the question Hi my name is Paul and I’m a resolvaholic. For years, I dutifully listed all of the things I would improve in the new year. Most of the time, my resolve lasted a matter of months, sometime weeks. I was reminded of this most clearly back in the day when my wife and I still had health club membership (you know, before that money was needed to pay the light bill). Every year Janaury through March, you wanted to run screaming into the night during each workout session. The place was jammed with what we called “resolution people.” You know. You may be one of them. “I am going to get fit and I’m going to undo 15 years of gaining weight and treating my body poorly in three months … just you wait and see.” Their mistake generally was in thinking that showing up would guarantee weight loss and muscle tone. They had no interest whatsoever in learning how

PAUL WAHL Sun Newspapers Senior Managing Editor

to do anything correctly or in moderation. By the time the snow melted away, so did the resolution people and we had our health club to ourselves once again. That experience taught me a great deal about making resolutions. I haven’t made any in years. Today if I see something that needs improving, I tend to start immediately implementing a fix. Psychologists will tell you that approach is more sustainable and results in less of a letdown once you go off the diet, stop exercising or whatever it is you have determined to do. So much of the stuff that falls into the “self- improvement” cat-

egory requires a change in lifestyle more than a resolution. Of course, you could always resolve to change your lifestyle, I suppose. I have a friend who is a personal trainer. People often ask him about the Ab-Kruncher or the Tummy-Buster or whatever device is currently being promoted on television during early morning hours. I love his answer: All of them are great – if you actually use them. Millions of dollars in fitness devices are purchased each year around Jan. 1 and by March 1 they have found a resting place in the basement, out of sight, out of mind. No one is suggesting you just stay a slob the rest of your life. But consider what motivation you are going to use to keep you moving once the power of your resolution dies. Believe me, it will die a lot quicker than you think. If you watch shows like

“Biggest Loser,” you will often hear contestants say that it wasn’t until they realized they might die at age 40 and miss seeing their children grow up that finally convinces them to change their ways. That’s a lot more effective than a resolution any old day. If regaining your health is your goal, it doesn’t matter that today is five days after Jan. 1. You can start any time, any place. Find the motivation. Make the changes. Then stick to it.

Ralphs FROM PAGE 4 ulated with “destination shops,” his new neighbors said. Wenzel said his store, for instance, is one of a kind in Minnesota, drawing folk musicians and fans from afar. Many of the shops here match Ralph’s old-fashioned flavor. In the same building as the shoe repair shop’s future home is a baseball card shop. Further down is an ice cream parlor. The other direction, a couple blocks north on Penn Avenue, is a typewriter shop. Chain stores here are few. The closest thing to a big box store would be the under-construction CVS Pharmacy or the Lund’s grocery store that marks the northern end of Penn Central, near Highway 62. “Ralph’s is going to fit right in here,” said John Cecere, who grew up in Edina and whose mother and sisters patronized Ralph’s at Southdale. Cecere, the owner of Accessory Computer Service Center, will vacate his space Dec. 31 and make way for Ralph’s. He said he is moving due to a change in his business model — he will focus on appointments rather than walkin business. So gone will be the inherently high-

tech business of computer repair, and in comes the decidedly ancient business of shoe repair. Roase said cobblers like he are becoming a rare breed. “A lot of people, they don’t even know where to find one,” he noted. “A lot of them have closed down. People get old and pass on and the rest of the family doesn’t continue to do it.” But Roase, who will enjoy a greater degree of operational freedom in his new spot, has a chance to continue plying the trade he said learned from his father and grandfather when he was 9 or 10. Now, his challenge is to re-attract his clientele, who now will be speeding by on wheels instead of strolling by on foot. He believes they will come, though. “Shoe repair shops are a high-demand thing if people know where they are at,” he said. And Ralph’s Shoe Service is unlikely to be overshadowed by a new big-box retailer any time soon, because the commerical configurationof Penn Central should functionally keep those types out, local proprietors say. “You don’t have a parcel of land that’s large enough to do something that’s substantial on, so you have to piece together many different parcels,” said David Gepner, a leader of the group called Penn Central of Richfield, which was formed four-and-a-half years ago to focus on the

(Photo by Andrew Wig – Sun Newspapers) revitalization of the area and to hold the city accountable to design guidelines established for the corridor in 2008. The assemblage of smaller commercial parcels in the neighborhood will help Penn Central boosters keep the area they way they like it, populated with shops like Roase’s and Wenzel’s that represent “the colorful character that has been assem-

bled along Penn Avenue,” Gepner said. It is a place where “everybody just kind of watches out for everyone else,” said Veit, Roase’s new landlord. And, by all reports, the Penn Central neighborhood will gladly watch Ralph’s Shoe Service move in. Veit summarized his feelings: “All I can say is, ‘Welcome.’”

sold from lots in Minneapolis and Richfield, the threat that those trees did indeed harbor the insect’s eggs appears to be minimal. A permitting oversight on the part of the seller and receiver of the trees is to blame for the concern, according to the MDA. According to Lucy Hunt, supervisor of the MDA’s plant protection division, Hillicker High Country Fir out of Black River Falls, Wisc., violated federal law when it sold Christmas trees without proper permitting out of Jackson County, Wisc., which is under quarantine due to a heightened presence of gypsy moth in the area. The pest, originating in Europe and Asia, is a defoliant that can kill weaker trees, and has spread westward across the U.S. According to the MDA, it has caused “millions of dollars in damage to forests,” making oak, poplar, birch and willow trees its preferred victims. In announcing the sale of the trees, the MDA asked residents to inspect their Christmas trees for yellow, fuzzy gypsy moth egg pouches. Brad’s Landscaping, which operates a Christmas tree lot in a parking lot of the Richfield Lund’s, and Rangers Flying Club in the Linden Hills neighborhood of Minneapolis, sold a combined 700 trees before the permitting infraction was discovered, according to the MDA. After identifying the infraction, the MDA inspected 100 additional trees, found no evidence of gypsy moth, and allowed the remaining inventory to be sold. Both Brad’s Landscaping and the farm Hillicker High Country Fir claimed no knowledge that the trees originated in a quarantined zone. This was the first year Jackson County has been quarantined for gypsy moth. However, “ignorance is no excuse,”

Hunt said. “Here in the nursery business you are obligated to know about quarantines.” The parties received warnings but none were fined for moving the trees. Despite the scolding from the MDA the chances the trees harbored gypsy moth was minimal, according to inspection results. In all, the trees were inspected for invasive species three times in Wisconsin and once in Minnesota before they were again pulled for inspection, said Brad Thompson, owner of Minneapolis-based Brad’s Landscaping. Considering this, the risk the trees actually harbored gypsy moth is “relatively low,” Hunt said. Although, “I wouldn’t say zero.” Alarms like this, well founded or not, are uncommon because “everything is so monitored by the Minnesota Department of Agriculture or the U.S. Department of Agriculture,” said Jaeson Morrison, forester for the city of Richfield. The MDA conducts nursery inspections routinely, and as heavy populations of gypsy moth spread closer to the state, the department is “getting more vigilant about small businesses like these two involved,” Hunt said. No counties in Minnesota are under gypsy moth quarantine, but the species does have a presence in the metro area, including Richfield. In combating gypsy moth, the MDA in 2009 sprayed 382 acres in Richfield with a biological insecticide commonly known as Btk, responding to what Hunt called a “very heavy infestation.” By comparison the agency sprayed 1,800 acres for the pest statewide this year. Gypsy moth is one of an assortment of invasive pests or diseases affecting Richfield trees. Also on the watch list is the emerald ash borer and afflictions including Dutch elm disease and oak wilt, plus new arrival bur oak blight, Morrison said. Richfield’s forestry department is “looking for everything just about every day,” the forester added. While it has since been downplayed, the gypsy moth threat announced by the MDA shortly before Christmas underscores requests that residents mitigate invasive species contamination by bringing Christmas trees to proper disposal sites. And as fireplaces glow this winter, the city of Richfield has another request:

Dr. Frank Ryan, famous plastic surgeon to the Hollywood stars, was featured on television and in magazines across the nation on an extensive basis. Before he died in a tragic car accident on the Pacific Coast Highway near his ranch in Malibu, Dr. Ryan fulfilled his lifelong dream of developing a line of products which would substantially improve personal appearance without plastic surgery. This product line, which includes an advanced abdominal fat reducer was previously only available to Dr. Ryan’s clients. It has now been made available to the public.

physical activity. People who were not exercising or dieting lost weight and pot belly as well as those who were exercising and dieting. The study also showed that Dr. Frank Ryan’s Abdominal Fat Reducer significantly increased calorie burning so that you lose weight faster or you can eat more food without gaining weight. And, the study found that the all natural Dr. Frank Ryan’s Abdominal Fat Reducer pill produced weight loss safely. How does Dr. Frank Ryan’s Abdominal Fat Reducer work? It was found in a number of research studies that a substance called Conjugated Linoleic Acid (CLA) decreases abdominal body fat in three ways: 1.) CLA decreases abdominal body fat mass by decreasing the amount of abdominal fat that is stored after eating; 2.) CLA increases the rate of fat breakdown in abdominal fat cells; and 3.) CLA increases the rate of abdominal fat metabolism which decreases the total number of fat cells. You can think of CLA as a match that lights the fuse in abdominal fat. This fuse also increases metabolic rate that can result in more fat loss. Dr. Frank Ryan’s Abdominal Fat Reducer contains the effective dose of CLA. CLA interferes with an enzyme called lipoprotein lipase (LPL). LPL is an enzyme that helps store fat in the body. 2 So, by inhibiting this fat-storing enzyme LPL, CLA can help reduce the reaccumulation of fat. CLA also helps the body use its existing abdominal fat for energy, thereby increasing fat oxidation and energy expenditure. Dr. Frank Ryan’s Abdominal Fat Reducer also contains other super highly advanced all-natural ingredients that help reduce abdominal fat. Studies have shown that Dr. Frank Ryan’s Abdominal Fat Reducer ingredients increase the rate of fat metabolism, which reduces both surface and intestinal abdominal fat and helps inhibit future formation of these abdominal fats.3, 4, 5 One of these ingredients is a very high quality and

An advanced line of products produced by famous Beverly Hills plastic surgeon Dr. Frank Ryan is now available to the public. Previously these products had only been available to Dr. Ryan’s clients which included Oscar winning Hollywood movie stars and celebrities across the nation. These products substantially improve personal appearance without plastic surgery. Dr. Ryan, perhaps the most famous Hollywood plastic surgeon in recent times, was extensively featured on television and in magazines across the nation. Dr. Ryan was also one of the first professional staff members of Endless Youth and Life which provides products and services that make celebrities look and perform many years younger than their age. On August 16, 2010 Dr. Ryan died in a tragic car accident. It was Dr. Ryan’s wishes that Endless Youth and Life would make his advanced non-surgical product line available to the public in the future. Endless Youth and Life is now complying with Dr. Ryan’s wishes. The first product being offered to the public is Dr. Ryan’s most popular non-surgical personal appearance enhancement product, Dr. Frank Ryan’s Abdominal Fat Reducer. Abdominal fat is the most stubborn fat to reduce and it is also the most hazardous fat to health. Abdominal fat produces destructive hormones that spread throughout the body. Inspired paint job inspires hunt for the artist Michigan man searches for the Richfield connection to a mobile piece of pop art BY ANDREW WIG – SUN NEWSPAPERS A Michigan man needs Richfield residents’ help in his search for the person or persons responsible for the cartoonish, psychedelic paint job on the vintage French import he purchased last summer. Because he just has to meet the mind responsible for the kaleidoscopipc depictions of a smiling sun, Humpty Dumpty, and the magical looking mushrooms splashed across the 1961 Citroen 2CV. “I just saw the art and I fell in love with it,” said Mike Mullen, a resident of suburban Detroit. The court officer hopes to meet those who graced the French machine with the

‘I’m excited to find out who it is. ...What was their motivation?’ dreamy collage. “I’m excited to find out who it is,” Mullen said. “What was their motivation?” Mullen has traced the vehicle back to the mid-70s, when Richfield native Terry Dickinson purchased the car, somewhere near Fairwood Park in Richfield, he recalls. It was 1975. Dickinson, who left Richfield in 1979 and now drives a truck for a living in Denver, Colo., had driven past the vehicle parked in the driveway a couple times before finally stopping to take a closer look at the spectacle. “I said kind of disparagingly, ‘What’s with all the painting, dude?’” recalled Dickinson, who lived near Oliver Avenue

South and West 71st Street at the time. Dickinson was not into the psychedelic embellishments, but he was into French cars, looking to add to his collection of two Renaults. The caveat was that the Citroen did not run — no problem for Dickinson, who bought the vehicle for $200. He took it apart, replaced a bearing, and “within a week I had it back together and running,” Dickinson said. It was a good deal for the now-63-yearold Dickinson, but he could not get past the paint job, although “I mean it was cool; there were some Beatles and Star Trek thingies.” Within a year or two, to the best Dickinson can recall, he sold the car for

$2,000 to someone who would appreciate the art. “(Highland Park resident) Paul Hansen was enthralled,” Dickinson said. Hansen moved to Michigan with the vehicle and his wife, Pam, in the mid-1990s, passing away a few years later and leaving the car behind to sit in his drive-in basement. Mullen helped clear out the garage last summer, when he discovered the Citroen. Since purchasing the vehicle in July, Hansen has gotten plenty of attention, including some from an excited airbrush artist who speculated the paint job was done by none other than Peter Max, the Andy Warhol-contemporary known for his psychedelic pop art. If this were the case, it would be worth over $1 million, the airbrush artist suggested. Mullen called the Peter Max studios and was told Max was not the artist, but nevertheless, he would love to meet whoevCAR: TO PAGE 12

University of Minnesota, or the Minneapolis Institute of Arts painted the car. “If a bunch of kids painted this and that’s the extent, that’s cool. I just want to know who they were so I can give them credit,” said Mullen, who added he would travel to Minnesota to meet the artist or artists. He knows Dickinson bought the car in Richfield near Fairwood Park in 1975, and that the subsequent owner moved the vehicle to Michigan about 20 years later. That’s about it, and he is hoping a longtime Richfield resident will remember the colorful machine sitting in that driveway, or recall the one-time owner — presumed to have lived in Richfield near Fairwood Park in 1975 — who sold it to Dickinson. The Michigan resident has no idea who that would be, though. “You could put a gun to my head. I couldn’t have told you a week after I bought the car what the name was unless I looked at the paperwork,” Dickinson said. Mullen said the Department of Motor Vehicles doesn’t keep records that far back. Dickinson noted, however, that the seller looked more like a “letter jacket type” than a hippy. “I was the hippy.” Mullen hopes the man who sold the vehicle in 1975 can lead him to the artist or artists responsible for its head-turning style, and “have grandpa and grandma do some explaining about all the mushrooms.” Anyone with knowledge of the whimsically decorated 1961 Citroen 2CV or its owner is asked to call Mike Mullen at 586-557-4195, or email at mmullen06@comcast.net. Lutheran Social Service recognizes Senior Companions throughout metro They help their peers remain at home and independent by offering companionship, shopping assistance and transportation to medical appointments, and in December Lutheran Social Service of Minnesota honored the Senior Companions in Hennepin County. Among them was Laurie Bruno of Richfield. She and other volunteers have been recognized because now more than ever, their services are appreciated, said John Bringewatt, senior director for Lutheran Social Services. “These services were innovations forty years ago and are more vital and relevant than ever today as our population ages,” he said. “Through the energy, kindness and goodwill of these older volunteers, we are able to improve quality of life for many others in our community. It’s also true that through these services, our volunteers make meaningful contributions that keep them active and healthy, too.” Lutheran Social Service last month also recognized foster grandparents for their work tutoring and mentoring children in schools and Head Start programs throughout the metro area. Volunteers in the Senior Companion program serve at least 15 hours a week, receiving a modest tax-free stipend and mileage reimbursement. Lutheran Social Service of Minnesota serves basic needs, providing food, shelter and consultation to more than 100,000 Minnesotans annually.

How does your chimney look? Are the bricks crumbling? Does it have White or Black exterior staining? Are you afraid to use your fireplace because you’re not sure how safe it is? When was the last time you used it? The professionals at AirBroom Minnesota Fireplace and Air Duct Cleaning in Excelsior can restore both your confidence and your chimney. Did you know that water causes more damage to masonry chimneys than fire? Your chimney, unlike other parts of your house, is constantly exposed to the elements. They are generally constructed of brick, mortar, tile, steel, and iron. All of these materials suffer deterioration as a result of prolonged contact with water. Freeze and thaw cycles so familiar here in the Twin Cities cause stress on the chimney. Water that has penetrated expands and contracts. Left unchecked it will cause interior and exterior damage to your home and masonry chimney. Some of the damage that can be caused includes: 1) spalled and broken exterior brickwork, 2) deteriorated masonry and metal firebox assemblies, 3) rusted dampers, 4) decayed mortar, cracked or missing flue liners, and in the worst case scenario damage to adjoining walls, ceilings, and woodwork. There are three main ways to prevent water damage.

1) Install a chimney cap. This is the most inexpensive measure to prevent water penetration to the flue and inside chimney elements. We sell and install locally manufactured caps for as little as $99. 2) Repair or replace a damaged chimney crown. The crown sits atop your chimney and covers and seals it from the flue liners to the chimney edge. Many chimneys are built with an inadequate crown constructed from common mortar mix. Mortar is not designed for and will not withstand years of prolonged moisture exposure without cracking and chipping which allows water to penetrate the chimney. A proper crown is constructed of a Portland

cement mixture and formed to provide an overhang drip edge. This assures the water will shed helping to prevent erosion in the mortar and brick of the chimneys surfaces. Keeping the crown “watertight” and shedding away from the sponge like masonry elements that the chimney is built of is the most important element to preventing deterioration. At AirBroom Minnesota we use the industry leading line of Saver products to build and repair chimneys. Use of these products allows us to pass on manufacturers material warranties of up to 15 years to our clients. 3) Waterproof your masonry chimney and crown. Most masonry is porous and will absorb large amounts of water. Brick acts like a sponge absorbing water and wicking it to the chimney interior. Products we use are specifically developed for use as waterproofing agents on masonry chimneys. These are vapor permeable – which means they allow the masonry to breath out but not in. This allows water that has penetrated the chimney to escape while preventing additional water from entering from the outside. Non vapor permeable sealers commonly available should never be used because they trap moisture inside actually accelerating deterioration. We use a special permeable sealer with a 10 year consumer warranty to protect your chimney. Doing this before deterioration occurs can save you hundreds or even thousands of dollars in future repairs. Water damage to chimneys is usually a slow subtle process. The problem is generally not obvious until it has become quite serious. Although these prevention measures may cost you a few dollars they can save you a lot more by preventing large future masonry repairs. The Hartmann’s at AirBroom Minnesota in Excelsior offer free no obligation repair estimates in the Western Metro area. Call John, Jim, or Lynda today to arrange a free no obligation estimate. Visit us at AirBroomMinnesota.com or call us at 952.545.2254. As a bonus, repair jobs over $750 scheduled with us prior to January 31 receive $100 off when you mention this article.

Richfield’s 2011 sports year was highlighted by the addition of a new turf field at Spartan Stadium and impressive individual performances at the high school and collegiate levels. Richfield joined the growing number of metro-area communities who have installed multi-purpose turf fields for use by high school and youth sports teams. Richfield athletic director Todd Olson unveiled his new turf field at Spartan Stadium last spring. Fans, players and coaches took an immediate liking to the new look. The low-maintenance artificial surface should save the school district thousands of dollars over the next decade. Plus, the new surface can handle the wear and tear of hosting hundreds of activities at the stadium. Many Richfield athletes made the year 2011 memorable. Here are some individual Richfield sports standouts of the past year.

Jessica January January has dominated the Richfield prep sports scene for the past three years. She enjoyed another productive year in 2011. Now a junior, January capped her sophomore year with a strong showing in the state track meet last June despite a disqualification in the 300-meter hurdles. January won the state Class AA title in the 100 hurdles and finished third in the long jump. January displayed her

skills on the basketball court, averaging 27 points per game and earning all-conference and All-State honors. January also excelled in volleyball and was named allconference.

Sam Schrick The Richfield hockey forward contributed one goal and two assists during the Spartans’ 5-4 hockey win over Chaska.

Max Hamilton

Zak Beaudet

The Richfield swimmer finished second in the 100-yard breaststroke as the Spartans placed fifth in the Woodbury Invitational Dec. 17. Hamilton was also a member of Richfield’s winning 200 medley relay team.

Beaudet graduated from Richfield High School last June, but not before earning a number of athletic honors. He received the 2011 Tom Spooner Memorial Award sponsored by the Spartan Foundation. That annual award is presented to Richfield’s top senior male athlete. Beaudet earned 10 varsity letters in cross country, Nordic skiing and track. He was a three-time state entrant in Nordic skiing.

Frankie Mork Mork scored two goals to spark the Holy Angels boys hockey team to a 7-4 Missota Conference win over New Prague Dec. 10.

Danny Sullivan Holy Angels defeated St. Louis Park 73-71 in non-conference boys basketball action as Sullivan came through with 21 points.

Trevor Olson The Richfield High graduate has been an outstanding college lineman for the past four football seasons at Northern Illinois University. The offensive tackle broke a school record this fall when he made his 53rd consecutive start. Olson, an all-conference selection, concludes his collegiate career Sunday, Jan. 8, when Northern Illinois meets Arkansas State in the GoDaddy.com Bowl in

Washington came through with 20 points apiece. Bry Guyton collected seven points and five assists. Hannah Wise helped the winning cause with eight assists. “We controlled the tempo of the game and slowed Kennedy’s fastbreak,” said coach Wise. “The girls did a great job in the tournament.”

Boys hockey Richfield’s boys hockey squad competed in the Rochester holiday tournament. The Spartans were defeated 7-5 by Northfield Dec. 29 at Graham Arena. Tyler Martinez scored twice for Richfield. Sam Schrick, Mick Dhein and Kevin Krohn provided one goal each. Richfield goaltenders Zach Ulmer and John Meyer combined for 25 saves. Richfield lost 12-2 to Rochester Lourdes Dec. 28. Dhein scored on a power play. He was assisted by Martinez. Kevin Ahlstrand came through with the other Spartan goal. Richfield goalie Meyer finished with 29 saves.

The Richfield senior was an athlete for all seasons before graduating last June. Metz received Richfield High School’s 2011 Athena Award given to the top senior female athlete. Nick Olson The 2011 Richfield High graduate earned a college football scholarship to attend the University of South Dakota. The freshman offensive lineman was redshirted this fall. During his prep career, Olson received three football letters as well as all-conference honors. He played in the high school all-star football game last summer at TCF Bank Stadium. The Spatans’ 6-foot-4, 260-pound offensive tackle/defensive end also received All-State honorable mention. Olson also played on the Spartan baseball team.

Max Hamilton The Richfield senior placed first in the 100-yard backstroke during the state boys swimming meet last March. Hamilton led the Spartans to fifth place in the team competition. Hamilton also placed 10th in the 200 individual medley and was a member of the Spartans’ fifth-place 200 medley and eighth-place 400 freestyle relay teams. Hamilton also thrived academically, ranking third in his class.
