How the Richfield wine tasting fermented BY PAUL GROESSEL SUN NEWSPAPERS Another year, another wine tasting. The Rotary Club of Richfield and its partners had its annual wine tasting event last week to help raise funds for the service organization. This year’s event was Friday, Oct. 21, at the Minnesota Valley Country Club. Full of wine, chocolate, beer, music and a usually eventful auction – the annual social gathering staple started with the help of a few dedicated and resourceful volunteers 18 years ago. Richfield Liquor’s Bill Fillmore is one of them. He was one of the event instigators, using his wine industry know-how to squash one of the event’s first grapes. “It was a real nice event and it has been for a long time,” Fillmore said. Fillmore said the event

Minnesota loses 7,400 jobs in September BY PAUL GROESSEL – SUN NEWSPAPERS The state lost jobs in September, but the unemployment rate went down with it. That’s right. Those two indicators are based on different measures, and it’s not the first time the two have gone in opposite directions when measuring one month, said Steve Hine, director of labor mar-

ket research at the Department of Employment and Economic Development. The unemployment rate dropped to a seasonally adjusted 6.9 percent in September, from 7.2 percent in August. Despite the slight decrease in unemployment, the state lost 7,400 jobs, according to DEED. Long-term stats show more accurate trends than one-month data, Hine said

How I broke my glasses and what it could mean With little ceremony and a generous sigh of annoyance, I listened to my glasses crack as I put on a sweater the other day. Honestly... Even in the recent past, breaking my glasses would be a cause for much greater frustration, but I guess I’m going soft in my old(er) age. A friend of mine recently sent me a text message after a lengthy conversation that read simply, “You wish you were old.” Now I don’t know about “old” per se, but I would grant that I’m a few more steps down the road toward retrospection than some of my contemporaries. That’s a good name for a running column: “Prematurely Retrospective.” I might even start branding my column that way.

DANIEL CALLAHAN Richfield Sun-Current Managing Editor

I bent the frames back (mostly) into place and put them back on. As a journalist, I don’t necessarily value precision sight as much as, say, a photographer does, but there is that pesky small amount of reading that goes into being an editor and with the bent-and-re-bent frames I’ve got sitting on my face, I’m not seeing things quite as clearly as I was a week ago. Visually, that is, not mentally. At least I hope not. But if I were, would I know?

I read a lot of copy while editing content for the SunCurrent and with the slightly “off ” glasses, I’m having a hard time keeping my eyes focused. This is, of course, maddening, but it’s not the end of the world. I’ll get through it. The long and short of what I’m saying here is that you’ve got to let the little things slide. There’s not a lot of sense getting riled up. Years ago, when I was in high school, I was a bit of a music enthusiast and played bass guitar on an album titled “Wet Shoes and Missed Belt Loops.” Ah, life’s little annoyances. I’m not sure where my band mates came up with the title, but years later I still think of that phrase when I’m feeling irritated by something trivial. I think the solution to the posed

question in that title is shoes dry out and you can restring your belt. The little things can be solved and there’s nothing worth getting all irked over. After some deliberation, I settled on a new set that I hope will be a bit more durable than the current ones and have a but of a “hipster” flair to them as well. The lady in the shop said I could “pull them off,” so I’m not too worried. I’m anxiously waiting for a call that my new glasses are ready to go. But I can wait. It can’t take too long, right?

Jeremy Hanson Richfield

Olson was our speaker. Of all these famous speakers, I don’t remember anything special about them that was impressed into my memory. But the comments about Slotterback made me remember his speech to the graduating students. It was a speech that made me think and I know I will always remember it. His talk was directed to the students and the students only. He started out by telling them that along their life there would be many sharp curves and bumps. Two weeks ago I was having a physical with my doctor and I commented to him that every time I moved a joint I could hear a crack. He sat up straight and shook his head from side to side and said, “I can hear the cracks in my head and I’m only 64, you’re 96.” That was a sharp curve for me

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Two cities more the same than different To the editor: A letter written in the Sept. 22 Sun-Current by an Edina resident, Giovanna Ingram, expressing frustration over the response from Richfield city employees regarding a late landlord license penalty left me unsettled. The letter, which the SunCurrent titled, “A tale of two cities,” seemed less about solving a landlord license problem and more about pitting one neighboring community over another. In her letter, Ms. Ingram describes a “very big difference” between the responsiveness and compassion of one community’s workers over the other, and then “wonders” if this is because of the cities’ contrasting income

levels. We are different, of course. But we can focus too much on our differences. The deep strivings we hold in common — far outweigh our differences. Ms. Ingram mentions compassion in her letter. The capacity and need for compassion lives in all of us — every human being. Like love, compassion does not live in any greater dose from one country to another, from one religion to another, or on either side of France Avenue. The words we choose are important. What happens If we stop and breathe… and allow our daily frustrations to fade before we communicate and solve problems together? Will we see ourselves in each other? Is this idea naive? Or, do we actually make the world a better place? I hope I have a chance to meet Giovanna Ingram some day. I bet we would get along well.

Superintendent’s words left lasting impression To the editor: Recently there were several comments about Supt. Bob Slotterback pertaining to his ability as superintendent of schools. This made me think of all the graduations I’ve attended during my lifetime, from my own, to my brothers and sisters, nephews and nieces. Having listened to the speeches given by many good speakers, they all wished the graduating students to have a happy, good, long life and to be successful in every way. Even at my own graduation, former Gov. Floyd B.

Support Maleck for Richfield School Board To the editor: We are writing to voice our support of Christine Maleck for Richfield School Board. She will work to ensure that our schools deliver a top-quality education to all children, so that they have the skills to succeed in the 21st Century. Christine has consistently impressed us with her deep commitment to education. She spends countless hours volunteering in the Richfield schools. Each week, she tutors kids who need a little extra help to thrive academically. While making a difference in many lives, she has gained a deeper knowledge of how schools can best support learning for a diverse population of students. For eight years, she has been involved in ParentTeacher Organizations, serving as a board member for six. In this capacity, she has worked tirelessly to organize parent involvement and raise needed funds for programs and materials that make a positive educational impact. She has creative ideas and the intelligence and energy to carry them out. Christine will ensure that Richfield schools are continually striving for excellence while functioning in a financially responsible way. She would be an outstanding school board member. Please help elect her on Nov. 8. Diana and Bob Mulcahy Richfield

Teresa Kruse for Richfield School Board To the editor: Teresa Kruse is the right choice for the Richfield School Board. Her main focuses are to ensure the district continues with its mission, “to prepare all learners for success in a changing world by developing their knowledge and abilities within a climate of mutual trust and respect,” and to hold the schools accountable for educating all our children. Every child has strengths and weaknesses; Teresa would like to see each child succeed by encouraging them to pursue their strengths, while at the same time offering help, support and resources to the teachers so the children can overcome their challenges. As a single parent, Teresa has participated in and encouraged the development of our Richfield children through multiple

scout programs over the past several years. Her son had been in alternate private and public schools that were ineffective, so she brought him back to the Richfield School District three years ago where he began improving academically. At that time, Teresa immediately became involved in the district’s Superintendent’s Parent Advisory Committee. Her business and financial background has provided her with the knowledge and skills needed to understand the complexities involved in the school board decision-making process. Teresa’s experiences with multiple educational institutions and working with children provide a fresh, new perspective for the Richfield School Board. I encourage you to join me and vote for her on Nov. 8. Ken Severson Richfield Lorie Pottebaum also wrote in favor of Teresa Kruse’s election to The Richfield School Board.

Support Richfield schools levy renewal To the editor: Please join me in voting in favor of the referendum to renew and increase our school levy. We are at a critical time. Richfield has been able to maintain and improve programs and add choices for families without being hampered by huge class sizes. This momentum needs to continue. Without passage of the levy referendum there will be little choice but to increase class sizes significantly. Our community has always come together to support our children. This is apparent by the positive direction in which our school district is currently heading. Recently, college students from Eau Claire visited Richfield Middle School. They were impressed with how diverse groups of students were working together respectfully and productively. As a teacher, I see this everyday and am extremely proud of our students. Please come visit our schools to see for yourself. We welcome the community to visit any time. As a fellow Richfield resident, I am proud of our schools and ask for your support for the Richfield schools levy referendum. Please vote yes on Nov. 8. Mary Supple Richfield

Richfield’s Percy Hughes is still jivin’ BY PAUL GROESSEL – SUN NEWSPAPERS Percy Hughes, 89 of Richfield, has established quite the repertoire, and fellow musician and friend Jim Swanson has captured it in a new book, “Sports and All That Jazz: The Percy Hughes Story.” Released Sept. 20 by Nodin Press, the book chronicles Hughes’ accomplishments not only as a jazz musician, but a tennis player, as well.

Hughes played at many venues throughout the Twin Cities for decades, including the Flame on Nicollet Avenue in Minneapolis and the Point Club in Golden Valley. Although recently released, the book has already gotten him some increased attention. He doesn’t let it go to his head, though. “This has been quite a bit surprise to me. All of this,” Hughes said. “All of a sudden people want to converse with

me. … I’m not a showtime guy. I’m a musician. I love my music and things like that, but I’m not a show boater. Golly, let me sneak in.” He teaches tennis to seniors, plays in the Normandale Community Band and has received several state and national music awards and honors, including an induction into the Minnesota Jazz Hall of Fame in 1987. Hughes met Swanson in the Normandale band in the ’80s, Hughes said. Swanson was a high school teacher of American literature, composition and creative writing for 35 years. “That’s how we really met, through our love of music,” Hughes said. Hughes has always appreciated the band, he said, the people he’s played with and young musicians he has met. He was so appreciative that he has given the college a gift from his own personal collection. Well, his whole collection. “You know I must think a lot of them when I give my jazz library away,” he

said. Even though he’s faced some health problems, Hughes stays active when he can. “I’m a good instructor for a couple things,” Hughes said, “teaching tennis and teaching music to young musicians, evidently. … I’ve been very ill. I wasn’t expected to live. I had stomach cancer, and I had surgery for this, and it worked. “So I’m back in the ball game.” A few of his other honors: — In 1985, Gov. Rudy Perpich gave Hughes and Red Wolfe a certificate of commendation from for keeping jazz alive in Minnesota. — In 1996, Hughes was inducted into the Minnesota Music Hall of Fame. — In 2000, he was honored with the William Griffin Performing Arts Award. Info: Nodinpress.com. “Sports and All That Jazz: The Percy Hughes Story,” is 172 pages and is available at major book outlets.

EdenPURE ranked #1 in North America ®

Save $192 - biggest savings ever Never be cold again

How it works:

Bob Vila, America’s Favorite Home Improvement Expert, Canton, Ohio

I know why millions of Americans are saving on their heating bills with the EdenPURE® Infrared Portable Heater. And now you can save up to $192, our lowest prices ever on the new 2012 EdenPURE® Personal Heater. The heater I personally rank #1 in North America. For over 30 years as your home improvement television host, I have reviewed and experienced thousands of products. I have an EdenPURE ® in my Massachusetts home and found it to be a very safe and reliable source of portable heat. This is one of those few comfort investments I can recommend for your home that will truly pay dividends. We all know heating costs are expected to remain at record levels. The cost of heating our homes will continue to be a significant burden on the family budget. The EdenPURE® can cut your heating bills, pay for itself in a matter of weeks, and then start putting a great deal of extra money in your pocket after that. With over one million satisfied customers around the world, the new EdenPURE ® heats better, faster, saves more on heating bills, and runs almost silent. A major cause of residential fires in the United States is portable heaters. The choice of fire and safety professionals everywhere, the EdenPURE ® has no exposed heating elements that can cause a fire. The outside of the EdenPURE® only gets warm to the touch so that it will not burn children or pets. And your pet may be just like my dog who has reserved a favorite spot near the EdenPURE®. Accept no imitations. The EdenPURE® can also help you feel better. Unlike EdenPURE® imitators, it will not reduce humidity or oxygen in the room. These imitators use ce-

Heats floor to the same temperature as ceiling.

1. Electricity ignites powerful SYLVANIA infrared lamps. 2. The quartz infrared lamp gently warms the patented copper heating chambers.

3. The soft heat “rides” the humidity in the room and provides even, moist, soft heat ceiling to floor and wall to wall without reducing oxygen and humidity.

SYLVANIA is a registered trademark of OSRAM SYLVANIA Inc. used under license.

ramic plates instead of our patented copper. Cheap ceramic plates reduce humidity, dry out your sinuses and make your skin dry. With other heating sources, you'll notice that you get sleepy when the heat comes on because they are burning up oxygen. The advanced space-age EdenPURE ® also heats the room evenly, wall to wall and floor to ceiling. Other heating sources heat rooms unevenly with most of the heat concentrated high and to the center of the room. And as you know, portable heaters only heat an area a few feet around the heater. With the EdenPURE®, the temperature will not vary in any part of the room. How can a person cut their heating bill with the EdenPURE®? First, the EdenPURE® uses less energy to create heat than many other sources, but that is just part of why it will cut a person’s heating bill. The EdenPURE® will heat a room in minutes. You will immediately notice the difference! Therefore, you can turn the heat down in your

house to as low as 50 degrees, but the room you are occupying, which has the EdenPURE ® , will be warm and comfortable. Your EdenPURE ® easily moves from room to room. Using zone heating keeps you comfortable and reduces your heating bills. This can drasti-

cally cut heating bills; in some instances, the savings may be substantial. The EdenPURE® will pay for itself in weeks. It will keep a great deal of extra money in a user’s pocket. Because of today’s spiraling gas, oil, propane, and other energy costs, the EdenPURE® will provide even greater savings as time goes by. The EdenPURE® Personal Heater comes with a comprehensive three year warranty and a 60-day, no questions asked, satisfaction guarantee – EdenPURE® will even pay for

the return shipping. There is absolutely no risk. And EdenPURE ® is the only portable heater with a National Service Network. How to order: During this special 10 day offer we can deliver to your home our Personal Heater which comfortably covers an area up to 350 square feet. During our special, you are eligible for a $175 DISCOUNT PLUS FREE SHIPPING AND HANDLING FOR A TOTAL SAVINGS OF UP TO $192 on the EdenPURE ® Personal Heater. Our largest

discount ever. This special offer expires in 10 days. If you order after that, we reserve the right to either accept or reject order requests at the discounted price. See my attached Authorized Discount Coupon to take advantage of this savings opportunity. The EdenPURE® carries a 60-day unconditional, no-risk guarantee. If you are not totally satisfied, return it at our expense and your purchase price will be refunded. No questions asked. There is also a 3year warranty for the Personal Heater.

Lost, found and put online BY PAUL GROESSEL – SUN NEWSPAPERS Want some stolen property from Eden Prairie? Just go online. When Eden Prairie, Richfield, Bloomington and Edina police department can’t find the owner of items in their possession, they’re considered abandoned property after a while (usually 90 days) and then given to an online auctioneer. The online proprietor is propertyroom.com, where more than a million prospective buyers bid on thousands of items up for auction at any given time. All four departments use the online service, according to officers at each department. If an item is sold, the money comes back to the city and propertyroom.com gets a percentage from the sale. A police department could have those prized and not-so-prized possessions for a variety of reasons – someone calls the police and says a bike has been abandoned curbside for three weeks; they obtain stolen items sold to a pawnshop (identified using serial numbers crossedchecked in pawnshop databases), or evidence from an ongoing court case is no longer needed. In all of those examples, the owner cannot be identified. Guns, drugs and other contraband are usually destroyed. Lt. Bill Wyffels of Eden Prairie said the department incinerates computer hard drives, too, in case there is any personal information on them. But, if the abandoned property happens to be money, it’s put into the city’s

general fund. It’s usually not a large booty. Recently, $1.32 in change was on Eden Prairie Police Department’s list of abandoned items. It was several lines down from a couple Rolex watches. Wyffels said the $1.32 came from someone’s wallet, obtained after executing a search warrant. The police didn’t know what pocket the wallet came from. So, it made the list. The expensive watches were among other jewelry stolen and sold to a pawnshop, where the police tracked it down in 2006. “Pawnshops are very good about tracking … who comes in and pawns stuff,” Wyffels said. Pawnshops have to keep record of who sells what in a pawnshop, and police can crosscheck serial numbers on the pawnshop list with a list of “hot” or reported stolen items. Since the police department usually confiscates the stolen item to try and track down its owner and find out who stole it, the pawnshop is usually looses whatever it paid for that stolen item. “That’s why sometimes we see $5,000 Rolex watches pawned in for $50,”Wyffels said. Pawnshop owners know that comes with the territory, though, Wyffels said. Propertyroom.com formed in 1999 and went live in 2001, said founder Thomas Lane. They take items from 2,500 police departments in 47 states, including the New York Police Department, the largest POLICE: TO NEXT PAGE

The site has 1.25 million registered shoppers, Lane said. They pick up and sell all kinds of items, Lane said — electronics, power tools, air conditioners. “It runs the

gamut,” Lane said. Officers in Eden Prairie, Edina, Bloomington and Richfield all said one item in particular is abandoned more often than others. “We get a lot of bikes, a lot of abandoned bikes in this city,” said Michelle Bentley, a property and evidence clerk with Edina. Lane said small police departments can provide a lot of material, but the southwest cities seem to get abandoned property picked up two to four times a year.

Jenifer Loon and Kirk Stensrud, will attend. House Majority Leader Matt Dean from Dellwood will also participate. Much of the discussion during 2011 budget hearings centered on whether the state should reduce spending or increase taxes in order to eliminate a $5 billion shortfall. Proponents say Reform 2.0 introduces the third option of doing more with revenue that already is available.

Diane Lynn Roers (Jonassen) Surrounded by her loving family day and night during her last weeks with us, Diane slipped away to be with her Lord and Savior on October 18, 2011, just days after her 62nd birthday, following a courageous two-year battle with pancreatic cancer. An extraordinary woman, she was a loving and caring wife, mother and grandmother. She was preceded in death by her father, Dr. George E. Jonassen; her step-father, Robert J. Breckinridge; her infant son, Eric Roers; mother-in-law, Clara E. Roers; fatherin-law, Edmund J. Roers; and sister-in-law, Loretta Klimek. Diane is survived by her loving husband of 39 years, Rolland Roers; daughter Andrea (Ben) Ranstrom; son John (Lisa) Roers; granddaughters Amalia and Sonja Ranstrom; and grandson David Roers. She is also survived by her 95-year-old mother, Velma Jonassen Breckinridge; by her brother, Robert (Fran) Jonassen; nephew John (Kelly) Jonassen; niece Jennifer (Erik) Fair; and great-nieces and nephews: Skyler, Justin, Jordan, Jane, Abby and Jack Jonassen; and Alex, Elliana, and Ava Fair. She is further survived by sisters-inlaw: Regina Klimek, Dorothy Cihlar, Addie (Ron) Gust; and brothers-in-law: Leonard (ViAnn), Harold (Elreen), Conrad (Dolly); and Matt (Gert) Roers and Urban Klimek; as well as numerous in-law nephews, nieces, greatnephews and great-nieces. After her children were in school, Diane worked for many years in the Bloomington public school system, first as a paraprofessional and later as a teacher. She taught eighth-grade math at Olson Middle School and Oak Grove Middle School. For the last five years, she worked for her husband’s law office in Richfield. Diane met her husband when they were members of the University of Minnesota Chorus. She was an accomplished amateur photographer, sang in church choirs all her adult life, played the piano, and enjoyed art, math, music, playing bridge, crossword puzzles, Sudokus, jigsaw puzzles, long walks and traveling. She particularly relished a two-week trip to Paris with her husband five years ago. Even after her diagnosis, Diane participated in multiple musical productions presented by Christian Arts Ministries. The family would particularly like to thank Dr. John E. Seng and his staff at Minnesota Oncology and the nurses and staff of Abbott Northwestern Hospital and Allina Home Hospice Care. In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to Christian Arts Ministries (CAM), Pancreatic Cancer Action Network (PANCAN) or CaringBridge. Visitation Thursday (Oct. 20) from 5-8 PM at Morris Nilsen Chapel, 6527 Portland Ave. S., Richfield (612/869-3226). Memorial service Sunday (Oct. 23) at 2 PM at Grace Church, 9301 Eden Prairie Rd., Eden Prairie.

Right Way Painting Solutions After one of the most brutal winters we have encountered in the past 30 years, we have all found things that need repair or replacement on our homes. Many of us have needed to put off work being done to our homes do to economic hard times. Many of us also put off projects to save money in case things got worse. Our home values have gone down which makes it hard to even think about selling our homes. The reality is that we have to keep our property in good shape to maintain our values. Painting the exterior of our homes is by far the best value to preserving our wood surfaces and windows. We can also dramatically change the appearance of the inside of our homes by updating colors. Painting woodwork is a very affordable option compared to replacing old trim around our homes. In many older homes our windows are still good, but the old stain and varnish are not holding up any more. You can save thousands of dollars by painting these windows verses replacing windows. Updating your

basement family room can also be as easy as painting the paneling. I’m Paul Moore from Rightway Painting Solutions. I’ve been in the painting business for over 20 years. Being a former Shop Teacher, I have a good background in finishing and wood replacement. We do both residential and commercial painting. We do work for several Town Home Associations, Nursing Homes and Residential Properties. We give our customers great value by being able to not just paint. We replace or repair wood, repair and reglaze older windows and reside areas that need replacement. We also repair decks and re stain decks. On the inside we repair walls, remove wallpaper, enamel wood work and paint paneling. We offer a 2 year labor warrantee on our labor, provide references and we would be happy to give you a free estimate. For all of your painting needs give us a call at 612-8392239.

Wine FROM PAGE 1 began with a core group of people who were part of the Richfield Chamber of Commerce, Rotary and Optimist Club. At the time, the group of communityminded people wanted to come up with an eventful fundraiser. The volunteers wanted to do a wine tasting, but weren’t sure if they could pull it off, Fillmore said. They were open to suggestion, and, with Fillmore’s experience in the wine

industry, said he could make it work. “If you let me run with it, it will be successful,” Fillmore said. Fillmore said the events are successful because they give people a chance to expand their knowledge of wine, and it’s a great social event. And, with a network of wine distributors he works with at Richfield Liquor, Fillmore has been able to line up 15-20 vendors each year, he said. Each vendor has about 8-10 wine varieties that guests can sample. They can order whatever they like and pick it up at a Richfield Liquor store later. Fillmore said he just provides the wine vendors, though. The rotary club and other organizers do the brunt of

the work. “It’s really fun,” Fillmore said. “They’re a real dynamic group because they make this event new every year.” The event usually features live music and sometimes a big-ticket silent auction item – such as a mink coat, a ski trip or a Labrador puppy. “We keep it fresh and exciting every year,” Fillmore said. The event has brought 200-275 people every year, Fillmore said. It’s a cause and event worth having another drink over next year. “It’s a nice event and the beneficiaries are local, which is really nice, too,” Fillmore said.

Football playoffs

It’s the last full week of October, and high school football players at Richfield and Holy Angels hope they will be feasting on more than Halloween candy. The postseason begins across the state this week. For Richfield, that comes with a chance to compete in the Class 3A state playoffs. The Spartans, after finishing 1-7 in the regular season, are the No. 7 seed in the eight-team Section 2 tournament. Richfield opened its postseason at second-seeded Minneapolis Washburn (52) Oct. 25. The winner will play No. 3 Belle Plaine (6-2) or No. 6 St. Peter (4-4) at 2 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 29, at the higher-seeded team’s home field. Holy Family (7-1), last year’s state Class 3A runner-up, is the section’s No. 1 seed. Waseca (4-4) was seeded fourth, St. Paul Highland Park (4-4) fifth and Jordan (0-8) eighth. Holy Angels put together a 7-1 season and earned the No. 2 seed in the Class 4A, Section 6 tournament. The Stars played seventh-seeded Henry Sibley (1-7) Oct. 25. A victory in that game would give Holy Angels at 1 p.m. Saturday home game vs. against third-seeded South St. Paul (7-1) or sixth-seeded Chaska (1-7). St. Thomas Academy (8-0) is the top seed in the section. The Cadets had a bye in the opening round and were scheduled to host fourth-seeded Simley (3-5) or fifth-seeded St. Louis Park (3-5) at 1 p.m. Saturday.

The Richfield Sun-Current sports editor is on the mend after having hip replacement surgery Oct. 12. Look for Kleven’s work to return to these pages in a few weeks.

Classic Suburban finals The Classic Suburban Conference will crown its 2011 girls swimming and diving champions this week. Tartan will serve as the host school for the conference finals, which will be held at Skyview Middle School in Oakdale at 6 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 27. – Compiled by Nick Clark

Cross country runners warm up for sections at conference meets BY DAVE PEDERSEN – SUN NEWSPAPERS The Richfield and Academy of Holy Angels cross country teams ran in conference meets last week in preparation for section competition this week. The Richfield boys and girls teams both finished fifth at the Classic Suburban Championships Oct. 18. The Spartans ran in the Section 3AA meet at the University of Minnesota on Oct. 26, after this issue went to press. Holy Angels also competed in the Section 3AA meet after both the boys and girls placed eighth at the Missota Conference meet. Richfield head coach Martin Huberty was pleased with his team’s performances, adding, “the kids ran great, especially Hannah Olson and Erin Brault for the girls and Lucas Blanchard for the boys. Their times were quick on a tough course. Most all of our runners were close to their personal-best times.” The Spartan girls placed fifth, just one point out of fourth. Olson finished third overall in 15 minutes, 32 seconds to receive all-conference honors for the fifth time in her career. She is seeking a third trip to the state meet, which will be Nov. 5 at St. Olaf College in Northfield. Brault finished 19th at the conference meet to receive honorable mention. Leah Mohn, running one of her fastest times of the year, placed 26th in 17:47. Next for the Spartans were Sarah Nygaard, Sarah Schroeder, Hannah Adams and Erica Strom. “The girls run well,” Huberty said. “Hannah has been one of the conference’s top runners all year and Leah

and Sarah ran their best races of the season.” Richfield also was fifth in the boys team competition. Blanchard (22nd place) earned honorable mention. His teammates were not far behind. Next came Jon Libra (27th), Max Hamilton (28th), Cal Bergen (29th), Jake Bauer (34th), Jake Beuadet (36th) and Alex Brault (43rd). “I’m happy for Lucas,” said Huberty. “He has worked very hard all season, and Jon came out of nowhere to be our No. 2 runner. When 55 seconds separate our No. 1 and 7 runners it shows how well the boys run together as a team. It has been the same seven guys, flip-flopping for our No. 1 spot.” Richfield was second in the conference boys junior varsity race. Leading the Spartans were Spencer Bainbridge (fourth), Nathan Libra (seventh), Spencer Bergen (eighth), Ian Stemper (25th), Mark Blanchard (28th) and Derek Mattson (29th). The Spartan girls junior varsity earned sixth place, led by Laura KruseSimonsen (23rd), Marie Rupiper (25th), Katy Stark (29th), Alex Schulz (36th) and Cherish Kovach (37th). Holy Angles competed in the Missota Conference meet Oct. 18. Shakopee won the girls event and Chanhassen topped the field for the boys. The Holy Angels boys were led by Darby Yoeks (26th), James Douglas (36th), Guy Jacques (42nd), David Huss (48th) and Dan Moriarty (49th). Pacing the Holy Angels girls were Laura Bagwell (17th), Emily Vigil (21st), Lindsey Bollig (46th), Ashley Olson (50th) and Emily Ciabraltoni (51st).

By: Ali Holman, co-owner of www.coreconditioningtraining.com I think we can all agree that eating is fun. Not only is it a way for us to socialize, reward ourselves and comfort ourselves, it also is the one area of fitness where people have the most trouble. Wouldn’t it be great to know that the choices you make are actually helping your fitness program? More importantly, wouldn’t it be even better to banish the word “diet” from your vocabulary? Chances are, if you are embarking on a “diet”, it will have a beginning and an end. The end is usually followed by slowly going back to old habits and ends you right back where you started. With our clients, we really encourage them to focus on a Lifestyle Change with room for “cheat meals” and realistic goals; which inevitably lead to lifelong results and without the emotional roller coaster of a diet.

Core/Conditioning Training’s List of “Fat Burning Foods”

eggs

low-fat dairy

Eggs are high in protein and low in calories. You may have heard all the warnings about eggs and your health: opt for eggwhites for the low-cholesterol, fatburning effect. Eggs also contain the vitamin B-12, a great supplement for breaking down fat cells.

Studies show that women who eat low-fat dairy products (such as non-fat yogurt and low-fat milk) three to four times a day lost 70 percent more fat than low-dairy dieters.

beans

oatmeal

Beans are one of the best sources of protein, fiber and iron. Some of the best beans to ear are: • Navy Beans • White Beans • Kidney Beans • Lima Beans

Oatmeal is loaded with soluble fiber, which helps reduce blood cholesterol by flushing those bad digestive acids out of your system. Skip the flavored oatmeals - you lose out on all the health benefits. If you must sweeten your oatmeal, do so by adding fruit.

olive oil

lean meats

Certain fats are good for you, and your body needs them. Olive oil is one of those “good fats.” It helps you burn fat and keeps your cholesterol down. One ounce of extra virgin olive oil contains about 85% of the daily value for monosaturated fat.

Search for lean meats - chicken (baked, broiled, grilled), fish and turkey - which are all high in protein. It is a good rule of thumb to consume at least one half-gram protein per pound of body weight each day. A chicken breast gets you well on your way, with about 22 grams of protein.

whole grains

interval training

Our body needs carbohydrates, despite what the fad diets tell you. Avoid processed carbohydrates such as white breads, bagles, pastas and white rice and look for whole grains that have not been processed and contain the fiber and minerals your body needs.

Interval training is defined as short, repeated bouts of intense exercise with minimal rest. You can burn major calories and get an all-over workout in less than 30 minutes. When you see people who are “cut,” chances ar they are partaking in interval training.
