Many stores set for midnight opening BY ANDREW WIG SUN NEWSPAPERS Thanksgiving dinner is no longer confined to cozy dining rooms and basement card tables. For some, the sidewalk outside any big-box retailer will do. This is where the most hardcore holiday shoppers will feast if they want to be first in line for Black Friday, the traditional kick-off to the holiday shopping season. “We had a family the last two years that was here Wednesday night,” said Eric Link, manager of the Richfield Best Buy. The mother brought them Thanksgiving dinner that day — to eat in the shadow of the store’s blue and yellow façade. With scenes like that in SHOPPING: TO PAGE 16

There are not many of these — places for homeless youth to rest their heads — in the suburbs. This bed was set up by Oasis for Youth for emergency overnight stays. The Suburban Host Home Program, which is run through Oasis and three other Twin Cities organizations, is looking for families willing to lend a bedroom to homeless youth for long-term stays. New program seeks roofs for homeless youth Aims to steer older suburban youth in the right direction BY ANDREW WIG – SUN NEWSPAPERS Homelessness is not confined to the big city, but that is where most of the help is. A new program aims to bridge that gap by putting roofs over the heads of older, suburban homeless youth. It is called the Suburban Host Home Program, which has been holding meetings in recent months throughout the metro area, looking for families to take in those who are straddling childhood and adulthood, but have no reliable place to stay at night. “There are no homeless shelters in the suburbs,” noted Nan Corliss, a volunteer for Bloomington-based Oasis for Youth, a resource center for homeless young people. Oasis is one of four organizations instituting the

Suburban Host Home Program. More informational sessions are scheduled for Nov. 29 at the St. Louis Park Library, followed by another such meeting Dec. 6 at Hope Presbyterian Church in Richfield at 6 p.m. Dave and Kimpa Moss of Eden Prairie attended one of these sessions, and soon may be part of the first match of the Suburban Host Home Program, which was started in May. Their prospective match is an 18-yearold who has been through foster care in multiple locations in the Twin Cities. “We have all these resources that could help youth that are not sure where they’re going to live, or what they’re going to eat,” said Kimpa Moss, who has raised four children with her husband. Three of them are out of the house, but remaining is a Russian boy they adopted eight years ago. “My husband and I have a very strong heart for youth,” the mother said. The Mosses fit the profile of the

kind of family that takes interest in serving as a host home. “I think it’s generally people who care about kids,” said Andrea Knoll, volunteer coordinator at Oasis for Youth. Many potential host families have already filled the role informally. Perhaps “their son or daughter brought home a friend who needed a place to stay.” Knoll said. Some of them are just emptynesters who suddenly find themselves with no one to care for, she added. Whatever their motivation, those who serve as host families will be fulfilling a dire need during a critical point in a young person’s life, advocates say. So often when a youth exits foster care, “they come out without skills, and no money to learn those skills,” Corliss said. “And in an economic climate like we are in today, those are the kind of youth where it is impossible to find employment.” This is the path that leads to life in

the streets, Oasis volunteers said. “If you can catch the youth, keep them in school, help them from ending up on the street where any number of things can happen … you have a chance to put them in a different direction than a lifetime of homelessness,” Knoll said. Host families and youth undergo screening processes to ensure a positive match. Both write biographies that are included in a catalogue they can leaf through. The youth, who must be 18 to enter the program, make the final decision on the pairings. Host families are not compensated for the arrangement, and are asked to commit to providing food and shelter for 18 months. Kimpa Moss knows her family is not the only one with the resources necessary to become a host family. “I challenge other families to do this,” she said. “I know they have kids that have gone off to college. I know they have big bedrooms that are empty. Help these kids out.”

CITY NOTES Construction underway at former K-Mart site The transformation of the former Kmart site at 66th Street and Lyndale Avenue in Richfield is underway. St. Paul-based Wellington management announced Nov. 16 that it has closed on its acquisition of the site. Taking over the K-Mart building will be a 45,000-square-foot LA Fitness workout facility. Two retail buildings also are scheduled to go up at the site. The first two phases of the project are scheduled for completion between June and October 2012. “This has always been an ideal site in a very desirable neighborhood, and we’re looking forward to starting construction, said Tanya Bell, vice president of acquisitions and development for Wellington Management. Construction was to begin immediately.

Hat Trick Hockey’s lease renewed The Richfield City Council last week approved the renewal of Hat Trick Hockey’s lease of space in the Richfield Arena. After experiencing losses over the past three years, the retailer will see no price increase in the renewal, which is for $1,475 per month. While approving the renewal, city council members discussed the exploration of other options for the space at

the arena, should Hat Trick be unable to continue operating in the facility. “They’ve lost three years in a row, and Richfield is not getting any bigger, said Councilmember Fred Wroge, in suggesting the city be ready to fill the space if necessary. Assessing Hat Trick’s chances of survival, Wroge noted the state of Richfield hockey, especially considering the recent loss of the girls hockey team. But Hat Trick draws customers from around the metro who use the arena for ice time, owner Randy Reed said. Reed explained the state of his industry, citing 10 metro sporting goods stores that have recently gone out of business. “I’ve had to do a lot of hustling the last three years to sustain the business, Reed said. Should those efforts fail, the city may use the space for internal purposes, said Jim Topizhofer, Richfield recreational services director. His department’s growing dance and fitness programs could potentially use the space, he said.

City seeks applicants for housing board The city of Richfield is seeking applicants for appointments on the Housing and Redevelopment Authority board of directors. Mayor Debbie Goettel will make an appointment later next year, she announced during last week’s city council meeting. Info: 612-861-9700.

Celebrate thanks and giving this month Or lessons I learned from kindergarteners It just might be true that you learn all you really need to know in kindergarten. I recently visited a group of preschool and kindergarten students to ask them what they are thankful for this year. I thought I’d come away with some silly answers for this Thanksgiving Day column. And I did, but I also learned that Thanksgiving is lot more to young kids than drawing handprint turkeys, eating pumpkin pie and giving thanks. Introducing me to her class, Rita Miller, a teacher at Step By Step Montessori of Southdale in Edina, said she considers November a month of both thanks and giving. “It’s a good month to think about what we’re thankful for and also to give to those don’t have what we have,” she told her students. Rather than ask them what

KATIE MINTZ Edina Community Editor

they are thankful for, maybe I should have asked how they are giving to others. Based on what School Director Rachel Hagenson told me, they would have had a lot to say. The 150 students at Step by Step, from infants to kindergarteners, are currently collecting toys for Volunteers Enlisted to Assist People, which serves families in Bloomington, Richfield, Edina, and south Minneapolis. Hagenson said the highlight of the annual drive is seeing children so excited to part with their presents. Later this winter, the school, which has seven other metro locations, will put together birthday bags for the organization. Twice a month, the kindergartners also visit a nearby senior living facility to share their school lessons and play games with the residents.

“It’s nice to teach kids about generosity and giving at this time of year, and it’s never too early to start teaching kids how fortunate we are and that not everyone is as fortunate,” said Hagenson, who noted that caring for the community is an important part of Montessori education. So this Thanksgiving, I’m taking a cue from the preschoolers and kindergarteners, who are already well on their way to a solid education in citizenship. While, of course, I am thankful for many things – some of the same things as the students below – this November I will focus on giving. Around your table this evening, consider asking your family members and friends what they are thankful for and how they are giving too. And without further ado, here is how the preschool and kindergarten students at Step by Step Montessori of Southdale in Edina answered “What are you thankful for?” “I’m thankful for cooking with my mom.” – Carson Weiler, age 6, of Bloomington

“I’m thankful for my pet Oso, a pug.” – Raja Chinnakotla, 5, of Edina “I’m thankful for my Star Wars movies.” – Parker Hunt, 5, of Minneapolis “I’m thankful for my friends.” – Luke Jeschke, 5, of Bloomington “I’m thankful for my friends too.” – Lizzie Jeschke, 5 of Bloomington “I’m thankful for my family.” – Caden Sosa, 6, of Minneapolis “I’m thankful for my family too.” – Bjorn Petersson, 5, of Minneapolis “I’m thankful to have my mommy and daddy.” – Andy Brown, 4, of Bloomington “I’m thankful for everything.” – Henry Riehle, 4 of Minneapolis “I’m thankful for my toys.” – Theo VanKerk, 4, of Minneapolis “I’m thankful for having a family.” – Alex Griffin, 4, of Edina “I’m thankful for everything.” – Ananya Biswal, 4, of Edina “I’m thankful for everything.” – Madeline Gray, 4, of Minneapolis

We have often said that Richfield Public Schools do not make excuses – we rise to meet challenges head-on. Local student wins ‘Student of the Year,’ battles cancer Heather Dragstra inspires a campus BY ANDREW WIG – SUN NEWSPAPERS Her grade point average was 4.0, and her cancer was in remission. So, in early November things were already looking up for Heather Dragstra, when she got the news: The Minnesota Career College Association had named the Richfield business student as the organization’s Student of the Year. “She has been an inspiration to all of us here on campus,” said Stacy Severson, campus director at the Minnesota School of Business-Richfield. When Dragstra was diagnosed in January with grade 3 brain cancer, “it was shocking,” said the Minnesota School of Business-Richfield student, who arrived in the Twin Cities from the southern Minnesota town of Chandler about a month prior to the diagnosis. “I at first thought my life was over.” Her parents urged her to come home, but “I was just like, I’m going to beat this cancer and I’m going to move on with my life and put it behind me,” she said. Dragstra kept studying, and in August she learned the cancer, a tumor on her left frontal lobe, was in remission. By this time she had left the metro-area college she had first attended and enrolled at the Minnesota School of Business. She was still receiving chemotherapy, not that

anybody could tell. “You would never know,” said Campus Director Stacy Severson. “She was incredibly motivated and very focused.” Seemingly, nobody had to know, but eventually it was time to tell classmates about her condition. “They were very surprised,” said Dr. William Premo, who instructs Dragstra’s leadership class. Dragstra still cycles on and off chemotherapy, and matter-of-factly describes the side effects of the treatment. “At first they just made me tired. That was it,” Dragstra said. “Now I’m starting to get more of the side effects of vomiting and stuff like that. It doesn’t last too long.” Dragstra said the fatigue and nausea doesn’t affect her studies. Her serious nature as a student may help, too. “She puts a lot of effort into what she does,” Premo said. “And she doesn’t try to sort of sluff off and do it marginally. … You can tell a student who really wants to take away something.” Aside from her own fortitude, Dragstra credits her family, which has been “very, very supporting and they’ve helped me financially a lot.” She also credits her faith in God and her boyfriend, Israel. “He was there when we first found out (about the cancer),” Dragstra said. Dragstra is majoring in finance and envisions working in that field upon graduation, scheduled for December 2012, but the horse lover hopes to one day open a boarding stable.

District seeks funding for ballpark renovation School board cites safety concerns BY ANDREW WIG – SUN NEWSPAPERS The Richfield School District took steps toward renovating the Richfield High School baseball stadium last week when the school board authorized an application to the Hennepin Youth Sports Program, requesting $325,000 in funding for the potential project. The school board cited safety concerns as among the top reasons for renovation, directing much of the blame toward the hill beside the stadium. People confined to wheelchairs or motorized scooters have often been relegated to the top of the hill above the field — often times sitting in the street — instead of attempting a descent, said Boardmember Sandy Belkengren. Not that there is much seating available anyway, Belkengren added. “The bleachers are almost non-existent. I wouldn’t want to sit in one,” she said. Whether or not the funding comes through, the stadium needs the work, Boardmember David Lamberger said. “If somebody gets hurt, we have a lawsuit at that point in time,” Lamberger

warned. “I mean, I’ve slid down the hill over there when it’s a little bit damp, so I know what people are going through.” Boardmember Todd Nollenberger suggested urgency in addressing the safety concerns. “Board members are expressing some severe safety issues that should probably be addressed one way or another prior to another season,” Nollenberger said. This could be as simple as building stairs down the hill as a quick fix, he added. “There are ways to do it inexpensively to avoid some of the concerns that I’ve heard,” Nollenberger said. Receiving the $325,000 from the county for upgrades would require a $75,000 match from the district, which Supt. Robert Slotterback said should be attainable. “We have good indication from other entities that they would be able to help us with the $75,000,” Slotterback said. While the stadium itself may need work, the field itself is fine, board members agreed. “It’s a great field,” Lamberger said. “It’s probably better than anything the Lake Conference has as far as playing surface.”

Shopping FROM PAGE 1 mind, Link and other retailers are getting ready for one of their biggest days of the year, a day that is beginning ever earlier. After last year’s 3 a.m. opening, Mall of America enjoyed a recordbreaking Black Friday crowd, welcoming more than 200,000 shoppers that day, said Bridget Jewell, the mall’s public relations manager.

Q

But some wanted more. “We had some stores approach us and say, ‘Hey, we want to open at midnight on Black Friday,’” Jewell said. The mall obliged them. And now, in a domino effect, many retailers in the mall have followed suit in order to avoid eating the dust of the postThanksgiving herd. More than 100 retailers in the Mall of America will open along with the mall at midnight, and other malls are keeping with the trend. Numerous stores at Southdale Center and Eden Prairie Center also will open at midnight Nov. 25.

Shopping FROM PAGE 20 waiting outside as police officers watch. The law enforcement presence has proven necessary, Link said. Some shoppers will try to scalp their tickets or produce counterfeit ones, and in the process things can get out of control, he said. “I’ve had fist fights over products,” Link recounted. The manager at Hub Hobby Center in Richfield has heard the stories. “It gets kind of ridiculous,” he said. His store will play it cool, opening for Black Friday only one or two hours earlier than the normal 9 a.m. holiday opening time. (The exact operating hours are yet to be determined.) “The first few hours are pretty crazy, but it’s not stomping-over-eachother-crazy,” Meyer said. The Acadian Candles store next door to Hub Hobby is similarly choosing to sit back. Black Friday used to be an exceptionally busy day for the store, but “it’s just changed, totally,” store manager Patty Fasching said. “It used to be they were waiting at the door, because that’s when the sale

started,” Fasching recalled. It was “absolutely crazy.” Fasching said that in response to changing consumer behavior, her holiday sale now stretches from early November to Christmas. “Now, because of the economy, they tend to buy sooner,” she said. They’re not saving for Black Friday; they’re spreading it out.” Why try to keep up with the behemoth retailers, anyway? “The big companies, you know, are the ones that really want to get you in on that day,” Fasching said, “and it’s really hard to compete with that.” While Fasching gets a good night’s rest Thanksgiving night, workers at the big stores will be gearing up, although not necessarily enthusiastically. Employees at retailers including Best Buy and Target have started popular online petitions in response to the new of the midnight openings. Link said he has heard no such complaints at his store. “You’re going to find two different types of people: people who look forward to this day being over,” he said. “And then you’re going to find people that love being here because it’s a rush.” Link identifies with the latter. “This is our Super Bowl. We make this happen right now.”

Right Way Painting Solutions After one of the most brutal winters we have encountered in the past 30 years, we have all found things that need repair or replacement on our homes. Many of us have needed to put off work being done to our homes do to economic hard times. Many of us also put off projects to save money in case things got worse. Our home values have gone down which makes it hard to even think about selling our homes. The reality is that we have to keep our property in good shape to maintain our values. Painting the exterior of our homes is by far the best value to preserving our wood surfaces and windows. We can also dramatically change the appearance of the inside of our homes by updating colors. Painting woodwork is a very affordable option compared to replacing old trim around our homes. In many older homes our windows are still good, but the old stain and varnish are not holding up any more. You can save thousands of dollars by painting these windows verses replacing windows. Updating your

basement family room can also be as easy as painting the paneling. I’m Paul Moore from Rightway Painting Solutions. I’ve been in the painting business for over 20 years. Being a former Shop Teacher, I have a good background in finishing and wood replacement. We do both residential and commercial painting. We do work for several Town Home Associations, Nursing Homes and Residential Properties. We give our customers great value by being able to not just paint. We replace or repair wood, repair and reglaze older windows and reside areas that need replacement. We also repair decks and re stain decks. On the inside we repair walls, remove wallpaper, enamel wood work and paint paneling. We offer a 2 year labor warrantee on our labor, provide references and we would be happy to give you a free estimate. For all of your painting needs give us a call at 612-8392239.

Pillsbury FROM PAGE 1 burden of providing affordable housing disproportionately on Richfield, compared to its neighbors “The reason why we’re concerned is it basically doesn’t fit the neighborhood,” LebBlanc said during a phone interview. He called the proposed development a “monster complex in the middle of a residential neighborhood.” According to plans, the L-shaped building will consist of one-, two- and three-bedroom units. One section of the building will be four stories tall, while the other will reach two stories, according to Clark. Opposition to the project — at least in its current incarnation — has spread to the council itself. Two council members, Fred Wroge and Pat Elliott, expressed their disapproval of the plans during last week’s council meeting, saying the current proposal has changed from what was originally presented to the city — although Clark said plans haven’t changed from those he officially presented to the city in June. “I think there is a lot of confusion about what the building is going to be,” Wroge

said, adding that he thought 80 percent of the development would be classified as “upscale.” “Now we find out it’s going to be 100 percent affordable,” Wroge said, “That’s not what I want to see. I want to see mixed [developments].” Under law, a family of four would have to earn $49,620 or less to be considered in need of “affordable housing.” “People have this idea that there are going to be people living there who don’t have jobs and don’t have income,” said Stark, who specified that “affordable housing” is not the same as the much-stigmatized Section 8 housing. Plans at the Pillsbury development call for one Section 8 unit, Stark said.

A quiet, convenient corner Eric Rodel moved in across the street from the old city garages with his wife about two years ago. The young, newly wed couple liked the central location and the “small town” feel of the neighborhood. “It almost felt like being back home,” said Rodel, who is from Bird Island, Minn. The Rodels worry the proposed development would change all that. Like LeBlanc, Rodel protested that the fit is just wrong “for our small little corner of the neighPILLSBURY: TO PAGE 26

borhood.” An apartment complex, he added, would “bring

nothing but traffic and noise.” It is not the type of people the apartments would attract, opponents maintain, but the volume and disruption they would create. LeBlanc said the only acceptable apartment complex to him would be a senior-focused building, “because the seniors are not going to get out of their homes and drive through the neighborhoods.” In explaining his opposition to the current apartment plans, Wroge cited a request for proposal summary which says the project should target households of color, singleparent households and the long-term homeless. “I think that if we’re going to use tax payer money, all kinds of subsidies, that we need to come up with a better way of defining who’s going to be a winner or a loser in terms of who’s going to live there,” stated Wroge, who said he would support the project if it were only 20 percent “affordable,” but said his concerns also lie with traffic issues and the number of apartments already stacked in Richfield. Opponents of the project say they would prefer to see single-family housing instead of apartments, but that is

A conceptual drawing of the apartment complex that would go up on the 6700 block of Pillsbury Avenue in Richfield, should the project gain city approval in the coming months. (Submitted graphic) unlikely, Wroge said. “I don’t think we’re going to find anybody building single-family housing.” The land the garage sits on is valued at $420,000, which would be the city’s asking price, Stark said. But that is in a depressed market, LeBlanc maintained. “That piece of property would double, triple in five years,” he said. “The city doesn’t have to sell right now.” But maybe it does, Wroge suggested. “We can’t let that

building sit idle,” he said. Despite the financing approval, the proposed redevelopment of the old city garage is far from fruition. “The project is in its very early phases,” Stark said. Two public hearings on the development — one with the city Planning Commission and one with the Housing and Redevelopment Authority — are yet to come. “The city hasn’t taken any votes or granted any approval on the site,” Stark said. Despite the 200 signatures gathered in opposition to the Pillsbury development, the ultimate fate of the old city garages is up to the city, and the representatives residents have voted in. A 76-year-old widow lives in the yellow house adjacent to the abandoned city garage. She calls her house her “nursing home away from the nursing home.” A possible second phase of the project would require the razing of the modest residence, which the woman said she has called home for 44 years. The woman, who asked not to be named, said she promised her late first husband she would remain in the home. “I’m going to keep that promise,” she said. The longtime Richfield resident may have modest effect on the fate of the property next door, but stands resolute and adamant in her own doorway. “This house? They better not touch it.”

Spartans’ Miller places eighth in state diving meet Pospisil, Gilbert also represent Richfield at Class A competition BY GREG KLEVEN – SUN NEWSPAPERS Two swimmers and one diver represented Richfield in the state Class A meet Nov. 1719 at the University of Minnesota Aquatic Center. Junior diver Courtney Miller turned in an impressive performance, placing eighth with 315.80 points. She moved up from 12th place a year ago. Miller won the section diving title to advance to state. Another Spartan state participant was senior Sarah Pospisil. She placed 13th in the 200 individual medley in 2 minutes, 14.61 seconds. She was section champion in that event. Sophomore Kinya Gilbert

competed in the 50 freestyle at state and was 18th in the preliminaries in 25.44 seconds. “I’m proud of all three of our section champions and state qualifiers,” said Richfield head coach Marc Hamren. “Those girls worked incredibly hard to get to state. “Pospisil’s state performance was excellent. She focused on improving her turns. Gilbert was a darkhorse for section 50 freestyle honors and showed improvement to win that title. Miller also improved in diving and moved up four spots at state from a year ago.” Richfield placed fifth in the Section 4A meet Nov. 12 at Richfield Middle School pool. Visitation was team champion. Two Richfield assistant coaches received sectional honors. Terri von Felden was named Section 4A Diving Coach of the Year. Amy Knutson was Section 4A Assistant Coach of the Year.

This is Greg Trebil’s final season as Holy Angels’ head boys hockey coach. Next season he will become director of hockey operations for the girls and boys programs at the Richfield-based private school. Former Holy Angels All-State hockey forward Billy Hengen is the Stars’ associate head coach this season and will become head coach next year. Trebil knows this will be a rebuilding season for his Holy Angels squad with a varsity roster dominated by underclassmen. But the veteran coach and longtime Bloomington resident is looking forward to this season. “We might be young but do have many top-notch players,” said Trebil. “We have outstanding leaders in our tri-captains. “We could surprise a number of people before this season is over.” Holy Angels tri-captains are senior forward Trevor Meador, junior forward Mario Bianchi and junior defenseman Frankie Mork. Two other key returnees are junior defenseman Tyler Lodin and junior forward Tony Haeg. Sophomore goalie Will Dupont is back after seeing varsity duty last season. Ninth-grader Jack Trudell is expected to contribute to the Holy Angels varsity squad as well. Holy Angels will open its 2011 season against Holy Family at 2:30 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 3, at Richfield Ice Arena.

Richfield resident and New Ulm High School graduate Angela Rieger was inducted Oct. 20 into the 2011 class of the Augsburg College Athletic Hall of Fame. Rieger, a 2001 Augsburg graduate, starred on the Auggies’ women’s hockey and volleyball teams. In women’s hockey, Rieger was a key member of Auggie squads that won the 1998-99 and 1999-2000 Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference championships. Augsburg also advanced to the first-ever Division III national tournament, the American Women’s College Hockey Alliance finals conducted in Boston in 2000. Rieger was a three-time All-MIAC selection and was named MIAC Player of the Year in 1999-2000 and 2000-01. She holds Augsburg career records for goals (68), game-winning goals (16) and shorthanded goals (four). Rieger ranks second in career points (120), third in power-play goals (12) and third in assists (52). She also holds singleseason school records for goals (27) and game-winning goals (nine). As an outside hitter in volleyball, Rieger was named All-MIAC in 1999 and 2000 while earning Luther Brotherhood Lutheran College All-America honorable mention in 2000. Rieger remains the only Augsburg player to record more than 1,000 career kills (1,030), and also holds school records for career kills per set (2.94), attack percentage (.303) and solo blocks (100). Rieger also had 1,052 career digs, 232 total blocks and 132 block assists in her career. The Richfield resident was an international business major with a 3.767 gradepoint average and earned various school and all-conference academic awards. Rieger earned a masters of business administration degree in 2011 from St. Mary’s University. Rieger has worked 6 1/2 years for Cargill in various finance and accounting positions. She remains active in adult volleyball and hockey leagues. Her Blue J’s women’s hockey team won four USA Hockey A Division titles and placed second three times.

Happy to be back covering local sports scene This sportswriter is glad to be back in action after being sidelined by hip replacement surgery and rehabilitation for the past five weeks. I would like to thank all my friends, coaching acquaintances, readers and coworkers for their well wishes and support during my medical leave. The Sun sports staff of John Sherman, Mike Shaughnessy and Nick Clark deserves thanks for filling in so well for me during my absence. And special thanks goes to Dave Pedersen for his contributions while I was away. And photographer Brian Nelson is to be commended for supplying top-notch sports photos for the Eden Prairie, Richfield, Bloomington and St. Louis Park sections. I did my rehab at Bloomington Masonic Home and discovered that many of the facility’s personnel and patients are longtime readers of Sun Newspapers. Bloomington resident Rod Lingenfelter was also at the Bloomington Masonic Home during my stay while rehabbing after knee surgery. It was fun to reminisce with Lingenfelter and visit with his sons Steve and Jim, who starred in basketball at Jefferson. I reminded Steve, a 6-foot-8 center, about the way he outplayed Kevin McHale of Hibbing in the state championship game in 1976. The Jaguars defeated Hibbing 60-51 in the title game. McHale went on to star at the University

GREG KLEVEN Richfield Sports Editor

Local athletes excel I tried staying up to date with the local sports scene during my medical leave and had plenty of time to peruse newspapers and watch area athletes in televised action. Richfield’s Trevor Olson and his Northern Illinois football team has appeared often on ESPN. The former Spartan lineman starts at offensive tackle for the Huskies and the senior is considered a potential high pick in the NFL draft next spring. One of the major reasons for the Gopher men’s hockey team success this winter is the play of freshman forward Kyle Rau of Eden Prairie. Rau led the Eagles to the state Class AA championship last winter and has been a key scorer for the No. 1-ranked Gophers this season. Bloomington’s Jordan Taylor is completing his senior season as the starting

Fairview Lifestyle Medicine Education Series

Academy of Holy Angels senior Brett Pierce has received college football scholarship offers from the University of South Dakota, University of North Dakota and Wyoming. Pierce started both ways for the Stars this season as a defensive left end and tight end. The 6-foot-5, 255-pound athlete caught a key 47-yard touchdown pass in a victory over Northfield. Pierce is also a goalie on the Holy Angels hockey team.

Congratulations are in order for a pair of Eden Prairie High School teams. The Eagles’ volleyball team, ranked sixth for much of the season, won the state Class 3A title with a hard-fought five-set victory over Lakeville North in the finals Nov. 12 at Excel Energy Center. Eden Prairie was the fourth seed in the tournament but defeated No. 1 Blaine and Hutchinson before topping Lakeville North in the title match. Head coach Chad Becker did a great job molding his team into a championship squad. The Eagles finished 27-6 and may be better next season with several of their top players returning. Eden Prairie’s football program should be saluted for returning to the Prep Bowl. The Eagles are 11-1 and will face unbeaten Wayzata in the Class 5A championship game Friday, Nov. 25, at the Metrodome. Eden Prairie lost 9-0 to the Trojans during the regular season. Head coach Mike Grant and his assistants do a great job building the Eagles into an annual state title contender. Eden Prairie will seek its seventh state football title against Wayzata. Look for the Eagles to pull out a 20-17 victory over the Trojans and achieve another state championship.

Holy Angels grads shine in college play Former Holy Angels football players met in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference battle between the University of St. Thomas and Carleton this past season. Danny Shields was Carleton’s starting quarterback. He is an economics major at the Northfield school. Wide receiver Ricky Margarit and linebacker Will Baregi played for winning St. Thomas. Margarit and Baregi are accounting majors.
