John Ashmead, a school bus driver, prepares to help take Richfield Public Schools in the right direction
BY ANDREW WIG SUN NEWSPAPERS Richfield voters last month elected a bus driver to be their newest member of the Richfield School Board. But driving a bus was just the latest of John Ashmead’s endeavors, and the former St. Paul elementary school principal had not been retired for long when he realized what was missing from his life. “What I miss most about retirement is the kids,” Ashmead said. So Ashmead, an avid sports fan who in his yonger days thought he was going to be the next Sid Hartman, went to the athletic office to see how he could volunteer his time. They needed a driver. “I didn’t pass the test the first time,” Ashmead said. But he passed eventually, and for about the past four years the lanky 63-year-old has sat behind the wheel as an activity-bus driver, shuttling students to sporting events, field trips and other activities. The arrangement has proven valuable, according

often request Ashmead to drive for their activities, and that John is the one who takes new recruits out on their routes as they train in, due to his calming influence.
Ashmead said driving the yellow buses has made him a better civilian driver as well, making him more conASHMEAD: TO PAGE 3
Dr. Natalie Hayes at the Richfield Clinic has about 1,200 patients on her roster. She gets about 15 minutes per visit for each — enough time to hear about aches and pains, check vital signs and write prescriptions. She can’t check everything, though. Other factors affecting patients’ health — those related to lifestyle and social conditions — are beyond her purview. That is where Sophia London comes in. It is Christmas, 1977 at the Richfield History Center. In what organizers hope is the beginning of a new tradition, one wing of the building has been decked out to bring back memories of a 1970s Christmas, when macrame ruled, and about everything but the Christmas tree was colored orange. The history center plans to pick a different year to bring back each Christmas season. “Richfield Christmas 1977” will be on display Wednesdays, noon to 8 p.m., and Saturdays, noon to 4 p.m.

Ashmead FROM PAGE 1 scious of his surroundings on the road. The job also made the incoming school board member more conscious of goings-on in the district. “I just enjoyed the contact with the teachers and the kids, and got a feel for what’s going on in the district, and just wanted to support it and be more a part of it,’ Ashmead said. Ashmead’s target issues include the achievement gap between whites and minorities. He said his experience as an elementary teacher especially informs his knowledge on testing, categorical finance, and the marketing of schools. Ashmead dealt with the issue of changing demographics in St. Paul, too, comparing the immigration of southeast Asians in the 1970s and 1980s to the more recent increase in Richfield’s Latino population. “The Hmong influx to St. Paul in the 70s and 80s was really a blessing. It brought jobs. It brought money in,” Ashmead said. “A lot of people view a large minority population as a negative, but if we didn’t have them, we’d be in trouble, too.”
A vibrant campaign “You’ve heard the term, ‘the perfect storm?’ when all of the issues just come together?” Ashmead asked, when questioned about the success of his school board campaign.
After finishing a career as an elementary school principal in St. Paul, John Ashmead took up bus driving and began piloting the activity bus for the Richfield School District. Now, John Ashmead is preparing for the new challenge of sitting on the Richfield School Board. He will officially take his seat Jan. 1. (Photo by Andrew Wig – Sun Newspapers) In a 15-candidate race, Ashmead brought together a nucleus of campaigners, each bringing a specialty to the table. His across-the-street neighbor of 25 years is a graphic artist and helped with campaign materials and signs.
His friend from church is a computer whiz. Another church friend is a salesman and a “schmoozer,” John said. One contributor was a writer who composed campaign letters and scripts for phone calls. Another, an 80-yearold who Ashmead met in a water aero-
bics class, had good finance skills and connections to the senior vote. Along with Ashmead’s wife, Mary Ann, they all helped Ashmead earn 16 percent of the vote, more than any other candidate. “I just had a great campaign committee that worked really hard for me,” Ashmead said. “I don’t think it’s my efforts as much as who John is,” said Tom Madsen, the “schmoozer.” “I think a lot of people I spoke with knew about John before I got to the door.” The Ashmeads said their connection to their church, and the fact they put four boys through Richfield schools, also helped provide the firm community footing that politics require. Plus, “and I’m not afraid to say this,” Ashmead said, “a lot of people were praying for us.” Ashmead may have been well known before, but when he takes his school board seat Jan. 1 he will officially enter the public sphere. But Mary Ann Ashmead doesn’t expect the change to be overly jarring, since her husband was already been under public scrutiny as a principal in St. Paul, but “he lived here and worked in St. Paul. Now he’s going to be in the community,” she pointed out. The spotlight may be extra brilliant as the district works to make up for the additional $416 per pupil in funding it was counting on through the referendum. But in keeping with his bus-driving demeanor, Ashmead is remaining calm. “We can move forward and make positive gains,” he said. “It’s not going to be a disaster.”

than there were five years ago, and five years ago there were more unfilled vacancies than 10 years ago,” City Manager Steve Devich said. “It’s definitely getting harder to fill these spots.” But according to Devich, they are missing out on a chance to play an important role in determining how Richfield operates. Commissions give citizens an opportunity to participate in some “pretty significant city planning or city activities, and have input into what happens in this community,” Devich said. While commissions have no direct authority to make policy, they serve as a sounding board for the city council and can make recommendations for big some decisions. Spots in some commissions are more coveted than others. The Housing and Re-development Authority and the Planning Commission are two of the most popular destinations for citizenparticipants, Devich said. Not by coincidence, these commissions carry substantial sway. “A lot of the things that are happening in the community go through those two commissions,” Devich said. While people vie for those seats, there is plenty of room on some other commissions. According to the roster found on the city’s website, the Human Rights Commission, which is meant to promote equal opportunity throughout the city, has three vacant seats out of 14. Eight of 12 spots sit vacant on the Friendship City Commission, which helps facilitate the relationship between Richfield and its Costa Rican sister city. Four out of 12 seats on the Arts Commission are unoccupied. “It’s hard to get people interested in their city, and that’s a shame,” said Jackie Mihalik, who sits on the Arts Commission. Between people’s jobs and families, “they just don’t have time,” Mihalik said. But some work to find the time. Rick Jabs has served on commissions and numerous task forces for 13 years. “I love Richfield and I want to take an active role in it,” Jabs said. Jabs found out just how active he could get, as he and other commission members planned for the city’s new municipal building, which opened this year. The commission gathered citizen input and even picked the architect. Commissions usually meet once or COMMISSION: TO NEXT PAGE

Commissions FROM PREVIOUS PAGE twice a month, employing the typical public meeting format, but commission members can choose from various task forces to take on special projects. “It’s as much work as you want to put into it,” Jabs said. The Arts Commission recently finished its teen art contest, during which they judged 89 works of art submitted by students from grades five through 12. Another Arts Commission project is a brochure highlighting the sculptures scattered around Richfield. “There are a lot of them that are actually hidden and people didn’t know about,” Mihalik said. Mihalik’s commission skews old,
although she would like to see it get younger. “When you get somebody that’s younger, that’s a real coup,” the retired graphic designer said. Also, “we’d like to see more Hispanic people,” Mihalik said. “We’ve got a huge Hispanic population and we’d like to see their art represented.” While there is room for more participation, Jabs said those who do participate tend to bring a solid effort. “Maybe less are applying,” he allowed, “but we’re still getting some really good people on there that are interested in the community and want to participate.” Applications for commissions can be printed off the city’s website, ci.richfield.mn.us and turned into the city offices, 7600 Portland Ave.

Jet packs and thought pods and more Gift giving is easy, when money is no object
ANDREW WIG Richfield Community Editor
I think for the first time I will try online Christmas shopping this year. It seems easier, and the options seem wider. I have made no purchases yet, but my hunt has begun, and I have found some doozies. Here, I will share some discoveries from a recent online window-shopping session — all things I plan on purchasing as gifts, assuming I find a couple million dollars in my the pocket of my winter jacket when I dust it off for the season. Picking the right gift can be hard, unless it’s a jet pack. And I found an ingenious one, called the Jet-Lev Flyer ($130,000) that shoots the operator 20 feet into the air, powered by water that it sucks up via hose, regurgitating it as a punishing, propelling blast. Whoever is lucky enough to find this one under the tree will have to wait for spring, however — or go on vacation — before they can use it, as the device only works on bodies of water. But it is not your only jet
pack option. A manufacturer called Martin Aircraft makes one that goes for only $86,000, and is said to achieve 30 minutes of flight time. The company calls it the safest jet pack in the world. It’s the Volvo of jet packs. It seems what we’re dealing with here, when picking between these two packs is, do we want to rocket around, funin-the-sun, beer-commercial style with the Jet-Lev water model? Or, do we want something a little more practical, like the Martin Aircraft pack? I think there’s room for both. For quieter times I found something called the Inspirational Archipod. The $40,000, 13 feet tall, 9 feet in diameter igloo-shaped cocoon is designed to imbue the occupant with maximum creativity. Because you’re in a dome, you see? And ideas really bounce around in there. The Inspirational Archipod is shingled by the very creative
CORRECTION In the Nov. 17 edition of the Richfield Sun-Current, the article about the Civil War presentation at the Richfield History Center incorrectly stated that Wayne Jorgenson is buried in Lakewood cemetery in Minneapolis. and handsome Western Red Cedar, which covers the double insulated walls. A gullwinged door opens up to the dome-y interior, which features walls with no visible joints that might trap inspiration, creativity or enlightenment. Portholes, and a clear top that hinges open, allow whiffs of brilliance to float in. I foresee a bright future where Inspirational Archipods dot bucolic corporate campuses across America, ushering in some sort of Age of Aquarius and the 20-hour work week. For now, I bet some people in California have them, at least. If you like motorcycles or science fiction, I might get you the Tron-cycle ($55,000). Based on the movie “Tron: Legacy,” the Tron-cycle — actually called the Light Cycle on the website that sells it — is street legal and accented with strips of electro-luminescent lighting that is turned to a blur by a fuel injected Suzuki 996cc, 4stroke engine. Taking the hunt back to domestic territory, I have also considered my friends and family who prefer that their home décor be made of firearms. For them I will pur-
chase the elegant AK-47 table lamp. The lamp’s 24-inch porcelain neck is, of course, a pretend AK-47 resting upright on its butt. It costs $445, which I imagine is the price you might pay on the black market for the real thing. I am not in favor of guns — I have never even fired one — so I don’t want to belabor the point, but I must mention, the company that makes the AK-47 lamp, Loaded Objects Ceramics, also makes one modeled after a Tri9mm handgun. The classy ensemble is completed with a set of chess pawns shaped like grenades. The above is just a quick sampling. Dig, and you’ll find some gems yourself. Check out the perfectly named thisiswhyimbroke.com, or uncrate.com or hammacher.com for more outrageous gift ideas. But remember your neighbors, too. Maybe some these zany, highend items can only be obtained online, but your local retailers also could use your business. Maybe buy the jet pack online, but your shops can help you with the more pedestrian items. That is what responsible consumerism is all about.
LETTERS TO THE EDITOR the Richfield Sun-Current, the address at which a suspect was stopped on suspicion of theft was incorrectly stated. An individual was stopped at Menards, 7701 Nicollet Ave., in Richfield. The misstated address, 7145 Oliver St., pertained to an unrelated item regarding damage to a home from a pellet gun. The Sun-Current regrets the errors.
‘Thank you’ from Ashmead To the editor: I want to thank all those individuals who supported me by voting in the recent Richfield School Board election. I am truly grateful for the confidence they showed in me and will do my best to uphold the responsibilities that come with
being a school board member. The defeat of the referendum will make the job of a school board member more difficult, but I look forward to the challenge, and am confident that the Richfield schools will continue to move forward in a positive direction. John Ashmead Richfield LETTERS: TO NEXT PAGE

Thanks to Richfield athletes To the editor: I thank Richfield High School’s fall sports teams for an enjoyable season; as usual, our players represented Richfield in an outstanding manner by exemplifying the Spartan Spirit through their competitive style of play. I feel fortunate to know them as true friends. The football team helped dedicate our new field in convincing style with a win over North St. Paul. Even though the final score didn’t go our way the rest of the season, our kids never quit. Cam Dearing and Mick Dhein were consistent standout players. Our volleyball team was led by junior all conference player, Jessica January, plus seniors
Bryann Guyton and Courtney Wood. With Jessica’s return, along with some other talented players, the future looks bright. The girls tennis team was led by seniors Kiersti Phenow, Sophie Pulice and Kellin Swanson. Team wise, one of the high points was beating the always tough Holy Angels squad. In cross country, the girls and boys teams were paced by seniors Hannah Olson and Jake Bauer. Hannah again advanced to the state meet, improving her time and attaining a high finish. Our girls swimming team was strong all season, especially Sarah Pospisil in the individual medley and junior Courtney Miller in diving. Three girls qualified for the state meet with Courtney taking eighth place. In boys soccer, Jack Stellon proved to be the conference’s top goalie and Alex Vierra led the team in scoring. The girls team hopes to improve and have a winning season in 2012. Oz Mullerleile Richfield

SRF a partner in progress: BY PAUL WAHL – SUN NEWSPAPERS Growth and expansion have shaped the landscape in the West Metro for the past 50 years. Through all of the changes from sleepy farm communities to thriving suburbs, one public projects consulting firm in Plymouth has quietly helped construct highway interchanges and bridges and create dynamic urban spaces. The doors swung open in 1961 on what was then called Strgar, Roscoe and Fausch with a handful of employees. Today the company has 220 workers and a number of branch offices. In many ways the company’s growth and success has mirrored life in the western suburbs. The earliest projects SRF tackled arose out of growing communities and an immediate need for infrastructure, according to Barry Warner, one of two senior vice presidents with the firm and a landscape architect. “In those days the city engineer and council got together and agreed on what needed to be done and it was just done,” said Warner, who has been with the compa-
ny 16 years. That aspect of public projects has changed over the years as many suburbs near build-out. “A lot of Plymouth residents in particular moved out here from Golden Valley when growth and development were getting to be too much for them,” added Randy Geerdes, president and CEO of the firm. Today, Orono, Long Lake and Mound are growing because as the quest for small quiet neighborhoods continues. SRF has followed those folks, having signed on to develop the Dakota Rail Regional Trail. The 13.5-mile trail offers views of Lake Minnetonka and follows the route of the former Dakota Rail Corridor through St. Bonifacius, Minnetrista, Mound, Spring Park, Minnetonka Beach, Orono and Wayzata. The result of the shift in vision of west metro residents has been a populous much more willing and able to take ownership of their destiny when it comes to development, Warner says. “We’ve had to become much more inclusive and more transparent in our work,” Warner said, which can be a challenge. “It was a whole lot easier back then,”
Plymouth consulting firm has been on hand for 50 years of west metro growth
said Tim Phenow, another of the company’s senor vice presidents, “but the process makes for a better project.” Geerdes and Phenow have both been with the company more than 30 years. Technology has also changed the consulting business over the past five decades. Warner remembers developing projects with pencils and bum wad or butter paper – better known as tracing paper – using tsquares and pencils. The single computer the company used was a Wang that took up much of an entire room, for which Geerdes and Phenow remember having to write their own simple programs. Today literally every aspect of SRF’s work is computer based, beginning with electronic bidding processes. Technology has reduced the time required to process plans for a project considerably. Warner pointed out that the $288 million Crosstown and I-35W project – the largest bridge project in Minnesota history – was designed in 18 months. Computers also assist the companies efforts at collaboration. Projects are parked in cloud storage — data storage which is are generally hosted by third parties –
allowing construction companies and others access to the information instantly. Warner said SRF has worked with companies across the country and around the world whose people they have never met. Technology has also impacted the public relations aspect of the company’s work. Today, if someone in a community opposes a project, they may launch a website to rally support to their cause or launch a blog or Facebook page. SRF has waded into the digital river as well, including regularly tweeting information about road projects to keep those who are interested updated. “Sometimes you will even see people blogging from public meetings on projects,” Warner said. Another change in the industry has been the greater emphasis on cost along for public works projects, sometimes a difficult concept for a company that has built its reputation on service and quality. “Cheaper isn’t always the best,” said Geerdes. “Today our work is defined much more as a commodity than a service.” SRF does a considerable amount of work for Plymouth and has for the past 35 years. A recent project was the Northwest

Health care FROM PAGE 1 sterile doctor’s office and the chaotic outside world. The addition of London is part of a new model in health care being instituted as part of state health care reform that was passed in 2008. The legislation allowed for the creation of Health Care Homes. Each of the approximately 700 primary care clinics in Minnesota are eligible to become certified as a Health Care

Home, which means they employ a more comprehensive, team-based model in treating patients with the most serious and complicated conditions. This model, along with current changes in the way clinics receive state payments, represents a “fairly substantial evolution” in health care, said Mike Harristhal, vice president of policy and strategy with Hennepin County Medical Centers. HCMC had a number of its clinics, including Richfield Clinic, certified as health care homes this fall. Richfield Clinic joins 144 other Minnesota clinics that have received the designation. So far, 135 patients at Richfield Clinic
have signed up for the voluntary health care home program, and they will get to know London, the community health worker. Or at least London will get to know them. While Hayes, the clinic’s medical director, can consult her medical chart and review a diabetes patient’s medical history, she may be unaware how hard it is for the patient to get to the clinic, or that there are four kids at home, and how the food shelf doesn’t always have the right foods to help control bloodsugar levels. “If they go and talk to the provider and they are not losing weight and their

(Photo by Andrew Wig – Sun Newspapers)
Health care FROM PREVIOUS PAGE Depression in particular is one condition clinics could handle better, Hayes said. “Primary care historically has not done the best job of controlling depression, the doctor said, “so now we have a more objective measure of whether it is controlled or not. This is because cases like depression can be monitored more closely with the Health Care Home approach, proponents of the model say.
London calls Health Care Home enrollees at least once a month to check up. If they don’t pick up or don’t respond to her first message, she will try again. If the second call fails, London sends a letter. No response from that, and she calls the patient’s emergency contacts. The closer monitoring means the doctors can “make sure that we are changing medications, increasing medications, combining medications in a lot of ways people haven’t been comfortable with before, Hayes said. London said her inclusion of family in consultations is especially vital in cases of depression. “When you feel depression, you don’t want to talk. You want everything dark. You don’t want anybody to talk to you,” the health worker said. “How do I get to those patients if it’s not through their families?”
Making dreams “My job is to give them some kind of dream, some kind of goal,” London said. Patient’s personal goals often coincide with their health goals. London said one of her patients wanted to visit an uncle they hadn’t seen in five years, “and I say, what’s the problem with that?” The patient’s answer, London said, was, “I weigh 450 pounds. I can’t take a plane and I can’t drive.” “He came in this morning,” London reported. “He lost like 110 pounds. … So we celebrate. We celebrate. We just jump all over the place.” Sometimes these celebrations involve passing out treats in urine cups — sterile ones, of course — Hayes said. Any patient at Richfield Clinic can enroll in the Health Care Home program, which is not limited by age.
“Anyone who has medical needs or social needs that prevent them from having optimal health, they’re a candidate,” Hayes said. The program costs patients no extra fees, just their regular cost for clinic visits. Discount programs are available at Richfield Clinic for the un-insured or under-insured. Pharmacists, medical assistants and nurses also are part of the Health Care Home team that addresses not only medical symptoms but the underlying life forces that come with — or lead to — patients’ conditions. Before the Health Care Home model, “you just did the best you could, but stuff just fell through the cracks,” Hayes said. London and other members of the care team are there to try and catch it, and the job of doing so can be simple. “Some days all I can do is listen. That’s it,” London said. “Encourage them that tomorrow will be better, and they believe me, and tomorrow is better.” Doctors don’t often have time for all that, as Richfield Clinic supervisor Michele Mandrich noted. “The key is having the right people for the right job, because (Hayes) can’t do everything in 15 minutes,” she said. The doctor needs help, and so do the patients. Because “you can’t do it alone,” London maintained. “You just can’t do it alone.”

Robbery suspect matches descriptions from Richfield, Bloomington incidents A man who robbed a bank in Minneapolis at gunpoint on Tuesday has a description similar to those from a Richfield bank robbery and an attempted bank robbery in Bloomington. According to the FBI, at about 1:30 p.m. a white male entered Bremer Bank at 3001 Hennepin Ave., brandished a gun and demanded cash. The robber fled to a parking ramp after receiving an undisclosed amount of cash, and utilized a crossover-style vehicle, the release says. The man is suspected of several other bank robberies in the metro area, and is white, in his late 20s to early 30s, approximately 5 feet 10 inches tall, with a skinny build, according to the FBI. He was wearing a black hooded sweatshirt, blue jeans, black shoes and a ski mask during the robbery.
A man with a similar description attempted to rob Richfield Bloomington Credit Union at gunpoint Nov. 9, but left empty-handed after being told there was no cash on hand. The suspect in a Nov. 4 armed robbery of First National Bank of the Lake in Richfield also resembles the man suspected in the Minneapolis robbery. Authorities have not confirmed a connection between the incidents. “We’re reviewing all of the recent bank robberies to determine whether or not one individual is responsible,” FBI representative Kyle Loven said. Anyone with information regarding the robberies should call the FBI at 612376-3200, the Richfield Police Department at 612-861-9800, or Bloomington Police Department at 952563-4900. –COMPILED BY ANDREW WIG
Is Water Ruining Your Chimney? The Professionals At AirBroom Minnesota In Excelsior Can Help How does your chimney look? Are the bricks crumbling? Does it have White or Black exterior staining? Are you afraid to use your fireplace because you’re not sure how safe it is? When was the last time you used it? The professionals at AirBroom Minnesota Fireplace and Air Duct Cleaning in Excelsior can restore both your confidence and your chimney. Did you know that water causes more damage to masonry chimneys than fire? Your chimney, unlike other parts of your house, is constantly exposed to the elements. They are generally constructed of brick, mortar, tile, steel, and iron. All of these materials suffer deterioration as a result of prolonged contact with water. Freeze and thaw cycles so familiar here in the Twin Cities cause stress on the chimney. Water that has penetrated expands and contracts. Left unchecked it will cause interior and exterior damage to your home and masonry chimney. Some of the damage that can be caused includes: 1) spalled and broken exterior brickwork, 2) deteriorated masonry and metal firebox assemblies, 3) rusted dampers, 4) decayed mortar, cracked or missing flue liners, and in the worst case scenario damage to adjoining walls, ceilings, and woodwork. There are three main ways to prevent water damage. 1) Install a chimney cap. This is the most inexpensive measure to prevent water penetration to the flue and inside chimney elements. We sell and install locally manufactured caps for as little as $99. 2) Repair or replace a damaged chimney crown. The crown sits atop your chimney and covers and seals it from the flue liners to the chimney edge. Many chimneys are built with an inadequate crown constructed from common mortar mix. Mortar is not designed for and will not withstand years of prolonged moisture exposure without cracking and chipping which allows water to penetrate the chimney. A proper crown is constructed of a Portland
cement mixture and formed to provide an overhang drip edge. This assures the water will shed helping to prevent erosion in the mortar and brick of the chimneys surfaces. Keeping the crown “watertight” and shedding away from the sponge like masonry elements that the chimney is built of is the most important element to preventing deterioration. At AirBroom Minnesota we use the industry leading line of Saver products to build and repair chimneys. Use of these products allows us to pass on manufacturers material warranties of up to 15 years to our clients. 3) Waterproof your masonry chimney and crown. Most masonry is porous and will absorb large amounts of water. Brick acts like a sponge absorbing water and wicking it to the chimney interior. Products we use are specifically developed for use as waterproofing agents on masonry chimneys. These are vapor permeable – which means they allow the masonry to breath out but not in. This allows water that has penetrated the chimney to escape while preventing additional water from entering from the outside. Non vapor permeable sealers commonly available should never be used because they trap moisture inside actually accelerating deterioration. We use a special permeable sealer with a 10 year consumer warranty to protect your chimney. Doing this before deterioration occurs can save you hundreds or even thousands of dollars in future repairs. Water damage to chimneys is usually a slow subtle process. The problem is generally not obvious until it has become quite serious. Although these prevention measures may cost you a few dollars they can save you a lot more by preventing large future masonry repairs. The Hartmann’s at AirBroom Minnesota in Excelsior offer free no obligation repair estimates in the Western Metro area. Call John, Jim, or Lynda today to arrange a free no obligation estimate. Visit us at AirBroomMinnesota.com or call us at 952.545.2254. As a bonus, repair jobs over $750 scheduled with us prior to December 31 receive $100 off when you mention this article.

The project stretches from Lake Camelot on the east to Wayzata High School on the west and connects to the Medicine Lake Regional Trail, which links French and Elm Creek regional parks. A number of the I-494 interchanges in Plymouth were also designed by SRF. Three Rivers Park District has also been a regular client over the years. Most recently SRF helped design Silverwood Park in St. Anthony for the district. The company has also had a hand in such projects as the I-35W bridge over the Mississippi in downtown Minneapolis, TCF Gopher stadium and light rail projects. The Lowery Bridge construction project in Minneapolis is also in the hands of SRF as is the last piece of Highway 610 in Maple Grove. As it looks to the future, company is heeding the admonition of Horace Greeley and “going west.” The Bakken Oil Shale Formations in western North Dakota are the latest worlds to conquer. Infrastructure in the small communities that dot the Bakken fields is basically nonexistent, Warner said. His company is providing comprehensive planning services as well as engineering for major roadway projects such as the truck bypass proposed to skirt Williston, N.D. While the list of projects the firm has completed is long and varied, Geerdes, Warner and Phenow are perhaps most pleased with their record in surviving the recent economic downturn. “We’ve had stable, cautious and consistent growth,” Warner said. “Although some may call our business model conservative, it’s worked well for us.” He also noted that throughout all of the economic challenges of the last few years, SRF has not laid off a single employee related to the downturn.

Spartans seek another 20-win girls basketball season BY GREG KLEVEN – SUN NEWSPAPERS Richfield has established a winning girls basketball tradition under head coach Lee Ann Wise. The Spartans have 100 victories in five seasons since Wise took over the program. Last season, Richfield was 22-6 and tied North St. Paul for second place in the Classic Suburban Conference. Hill-Murray was champion. Richfield could be headed for another 20victory season in Wise’s sixth year. The Spartans have a strong nucleus in co-captains Hannah Wise and Jessica January. Wise is a 5-foot-8 senior guard who averaged 12 points per game as a junior. She was all-conference and honorable mention AllState. January, a 5-7 junior point guard, directs the Spartan offense and is one of the most
prolific scorers in the state. January averaged 26 points as a sophomore and is being recruited by Division I colleges. Another key returnee is 5-10 senior forward/center Bry Guyton. She averaged nine points per game a year ago. Guyton received all-conference honorable mention along with 5-8 junior guard Sierra Ford-Washington, who averaged eight points as a sophomore. Other top Spartan varsity players are 5-5 junior point guard Hailey Lindblom, 5-8 junior guard MacKenzie Schramm, 6-1 freshman post player Leah Barnes and 5-10 sophomore post Taylor Moore. Richfield met Holy Angels in its opener Nov. 29. The Spartans will compete in the Breakdown Sports Tip-Off Classic at 4:45 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 3, at Hopkins Lindbergh Center.
Kreidler, a Richfield resident, was the top scorer on the South Suburban Flyers PI Division adapted soccer team. Kreidler scored 23 points during the regular season and scored nine goals for the Flyers in state tourney action Nov. 18-19 at Stillwater High School. South Suburban won the state consolation title.
Angela Rieger The Richfield resident and New Ulm High School graduate was inducted Oct. 20 into the 2011 class of the Augsburg College Athletic Hall of Fame. Rieger starred in hockey and volleyball for the Auggies.
Will Pagel The Holy Angels senior running back helped lead the Stars to a secondplace finish in Missota Conference football. Pagel was one of seven Stars players to receive All-Missota honors. Rampage wrestlers seek big things in upcoming season BY GREG KLEVEN – SUN NEWSPAPERS
It was a successful season for the Richfield boys basketball team a year ago. The Spartans went 18-10 record under head coach Omar McMillan. Richfield placed third in the Classic Suburban Conference. Richfield graduated John Johnson, its second-leading scorer and best defender, along with several other leaders off last season’s team. But McMillan is convinced his team has the potential to be a title contender in the conference again this season. “St. Thomas Academy and Tartan are the two teams you must go through as far as the conference title is concerned,” said the Richfield coach. “We have a lot of experience back and more athleticism than a year ago.” Richfield opens its season against visiting Waconia at 2 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 3. The Spartans remain home to play Holy Family Catholic at 7 p.m. Friday, Dec. 9. Four captains should not only provide leadership for the Spartans but are expected to produce plenty of offense as well. Richfield’s leading scorer, Jared Noonan, is a returning starter and captain. The 6-foot-4 senior guard/forward averaged 16 points as a junior. “Jared will be our best scorer and go-to guy,” said McMillan. “He can hit the three-point shots and knows how to score.” Another Spartan captain is 6-3 senior guard/forward Eric Jimson. “Eric battled injuries last season but still averaged almost 10 points,” McMillan said. Richfield’s other captains are 6-4 senior guard/forward Wibi MacDonald and 6-4 senior forward Dan Beyel. The Spartans’ depth situation is strengthened by the return of 5-10 senior guard Shawn Bear, 6-5 junior forward Deshawn Jones, 6-2 senior forward Lorenzo Evans, 6-2 sophomore guard Louis Williams and 5-10 senior guard Marcellis Beard.

This is the second season for the Richfield/Edina cooperative wrestling program. And the Rampage squad should be improved with 13 returning letter-winners. The Rampage has 46 wrestlers out for the team – 23 from Richfield and 23 from Edina. Richfield/Edina squad has three state tournament wrestlers back. They are senior James Lettow (Edina), Chandler Arredondo (Richfield) and Mike Dyer (Richfield). Each of those wrestlers finished last season with 23 victories. “Those three look to improve their individual records to at least 25 wins this season,” said Rampage co-head coach Eric Herrmann. “Our team’s goal is to improve on last season’s 7-10 record and win at least 10 matches. “We are required to split our co-op team for section and state competition this season. Richfield will compete in Section 5AA and Edina will be in Section 2AAA.” Arredondo is ranked fourth at 195 in Class 2A. Dyer is ranked ninth at 285. Other varsity returnees are sophomore 106-pounder Justin Swetala (Richfield), sophomore 113-pounder Obsa Ali (Richfield), ninth-grade 120pounder Christian Wellens (Richfield) and ninth-grade 132pounder Alex Abramson (Richfield). Richfield’s other varsity wrestlers are Lettow, sophomore Joseph Smith (Edina, 152), senior Dennis Chavarria (Richfield, 160), junior Shane Walfoort (Edina, 170), Arredondo and Dyer. The Rampage’s coaching staff consists of Herrmann, Josh Burhans (cohead coach) and Kitt Guerrier (junior varsity/ninth grade). The Rampage’s first meet is 9 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 3, at Fridley High School. Richfield will travel to North St. Paul for a 5 p.m. conference meet Thursday, Dec. 8.

Top line returns for Richfield boys hockey team Dhein is back at center after leading team in scoring as a junior BY GREG KLEVEN – SUN NEWSPAPERS Depth will be a problem again for the Richfield boys hockey team. The Spartans are the only squad in the Classic Suburban Conference without a junior varsity program. Richfield has 19 players on its 2011-12 varsity team. The class breakdown is five seniors, three juniors, 10 sopho-
mores and one ninth-grader. “We will be in interesting waters with so many young kids on the team,” said Richfield head coach John Christ. “But we have our first line back and a couple of experienced defensemen.” Richfield didn’t field a varsity girls hockey team this season. The Spartans’ boys hockey outlook is uncertain for next season. “Our situation is still up in the air for next season,” said Christ. “There has been some discussion that we might be part of a cooperative team.” But the Spartan coach is concentrating on getting the most out of this
year’s squad. Richfield’s veteran first line consists of senior center Mick Dhein and senior forwards Tyler Martinez and Sam Schrick. Dhein was the Spartans’ leading scorer with 54 points a year ago.
