In about a 200-point font, the fliers said “NO.” No to the proposed high-density apartment unit proposed for a Richfield neighborhood. The literature was handed out to those attending a meeting held by Ron Clark Construction Nov. 29 to address the concerns of Richfield residents regarding the proposed redevelopment of the vacant city garages at the 7600 block of Pillsbury Avenue South. Keeper of the underground Bill LaLonde wins state public works award for efforts in utility locating BY ANDREW WIG – SUN NEWSPAPERS Not many Richfield residents recognize Bill LaLonde’s work. And who can blame them? It’s all hidden underground. But the utility specialist for the city of Richfield’s public works department final-
ly got some recognition last month, when he received the American Public Works Association-Minnesota chapter 2011 Personnel Award in the maintenance category, an award no other Richfield Public Works employee has won, to the knowledge of Public Works Director Mike Eastling. Normally, the public works department receives recognition only during the unfortunate circumstances. “Our world is all underground. You don’t see it until disaster happens, said Utilities Supt. Robert

Hintgen. “That’s where this award kind of makes you feel kind of special, said LaLonde, a Bloomington resident, “because all the stuff I do — at the end of the day, it’s going to be covered up. Much of the responsibility of avoiding
such a circumstance falls on LaLonde, the point man for the city’s utility location program, which tracks the labyrinth of water and sewage piping running underneath the city. LALONDE: TO NEXT PAGE

LaLonde FROM PREVIOUS PAGE “There’s no one in the city that knows the water infrastructure like Bill,” Hintgen said, “and I include myself in that.” Acquiring such knowledge is no simple matter, as decades of development and redevelopment have created in some places a jam-packed jumble of water mains, sewage pipes and cabling. “If you look and see everything that’s underground, a lot of times you’re going to see there’s hardly room for anything more. It’s just packed in there,” Eastling said. A case in point lies under the current redevelopment of the old Kmart and surrounding property near Lyndale Avenue and 66th Street, where LaLonde spends much of his time these days, working to prevent the disaster of a severed artery at the hands of a wayward backhoe. “Not only are those (roads) major traffic carriers, but that’s where the big gas lines are. That’s where the big electrical No Motels, No Hype Just Honest Pricing Everyday !

lines come through,” Eastling explained. Employing a locating wand that uses radio waves to detect the piping, protecting this underground infrastructure is LaLonde’s number one priority. Complicating matters, records of the tangled sub-terrain’s inventory are not always available. At the Kmart site, gas and sewer lines were laid in the 1950s and 1960s, and then redeveloped in the 1970s, Eastling said. The result is a hodge-podge of piping from various eras for LaLonde to sort through. “There isn’t a perfect (project diagram) out there. You’re only as good as people were in previous years,” LaLonde said. “How they handled it in the 70s and 80s, we just don’t know.” The advent of the locating wands has helped fix that problem, said Eastling. Laughing, he added that without them, “you dig very carefully.” LaLonde’s supervisors call his role vital to maintaining Richfield’s utilities, and LaLonde knows the stakes. “I take my job very seriously. Very much,” he said. Because when someone turns a faucet and nothing comes out, irritation tends to

set in. Large projects that require digging often temporarily shut off water services for certain residents and businesses. Whether it means a dry showerhead or an unflushable toilet, “we come and tear up the street, some of those things are going to be interrupted,” Eastling said. LaLonde is the man who knocks on doors and delivers the bad news, to differing receptions. “You can’t please them all,” he said. “There are some that are going to be mad regardless, and most of the time they are pretty cooperative.” Sometimes quelling resident’s anger means reaching out in unconventional ways, like bringing a family bottled water in response concerns about the safety of substitute water sources during service interruptions. “That’s something I wouldn’t have thought of,” Eastling said, “but Billy took it upon himself and said, ‘That’s what it’s going to take.’” That kind of act wouldn’t surprise his mother. “He’s very conscientious,” Rose LaLonde said. The mother, who assembled fire-detecting equipment and worked
as a supervisory aid at Detector Electronics in Bloomington until she was 83, believes her son’s work ethic runs in the family. She added that LaLonde displayed the trait at a young age, running a bicycle repair shop out of the family’s Bloomington home at the age of 12. He was good enough that when people brought bikes to the local hardware store for repair, they would be sent to the LaLonde residence for the job, the mother said. After working for the city for 26 years, the stakes are higher now as LaLonde works to keep the water flowing. But his bosses are appreciative all the same. “Believe me, we know how valuable Bill is,” Eastling said. “That’s why we nominated him.” LaLonde will take the recognition he can get. “You know what the sad thing is? You go through all this utility work … and the first thing, people look and say, ‘What a nice road,’” LaLonde noted. “Nobody knows what it took to get that nice road put in.”

Study: Prescription drug abuse on rise for county arrestees BY PAUL GROESSEL – SUN NEWSPAPERS A 2011 study shows more than half of adult males booked into Hennepin County Jail tested positive for illegal drug use, according to the county sheriff. The Arrestee Drug Abuse Monitoring Program (ADAM II) found that 68 percent of men booked into the county jail had taken at least one illegal drug prior to their arrest, according to the sheriff ’s office.
The federal Office of National Drug Control Policy generates the study, but an office spokesman said it has not made preliminary 2011 results public, so it could not verify the specific numbers the sheriff ’s office has already released. The most popular drug among those entering jail was marijuana, with 53 percent of arrestees having the drug in their system, the sheriff ’s office reported. Even though 1.5 percent of all

arrestees had Oxycodone in their system, it’s most prevalent among the youngest in jail. Of men 21 years old and younger booked into jail, 5.6 percent had the painkiller medication Oxycodone in their system prior to arrest, the sheriff ’s office reported. The use of heroin and Oxycodone is on the rise among young arrestees, according to county sheriff Rich Stanek, while cocaine and methamphetamine use has declined. Young men have also had the biggest shift in drug use among all age groups. In the 2010 study, 3 percent of those 21 and younger had Oxycodone in their system, according to federal survey results. With the increase in prescription drug abuse has come a decrease in the use of cocaine and methamphetamine, according to the sheriff. The sheriff ’s office claims none of the youngest men in jail had either drug in their system, according to the 2011 preliminary results. A 2010 study found that 3.6 percent of those under 21 had cocaine in their system and 1.8 percent had taken methamphetamine prior to their arrest.
Even though he could not speak to specific 2011 results, National Drug Control Policy spokesman Rafael Lemaitre did say prescription drug abuse is on the rise in the United States. It’s becoming an epidemic, he said, “and that’s not a phrase we use lightly here.” Of the 28,000 drug-related deaths per year, many of them are from prescription drug abuse, and 70 percent of abusers get the drugs from friends and family, Lemaitre said. That’s why federal authorities sponsored 4,000 “take-back” sites across the country in October, where people can turn leftover prescription drugs to authorities, Lemaitre said. A new law that will allow local authorities and groups to run their own take-back programs is also expected to begin soon.
ADAM II survey methods For years the federal government has contracted ABT Associates to conduct the drug study. It began by surveying people booked into jails in 35 cities and metropolitan areas across DRUGS: TO PAGE 7

To city and school elected officials: Thank you An elected official once apologized to me for not returning a phone call because she was visiting a family member who was battling cancer. The only appropriate response to that is, “What I called about doesn’t really matter. I wish you the best.” Did I say that? No, because I’m some jerk reporter who has to ask some question because I signed up to be on this end of the phone. She didn’t have to be on the other end. And she apologized. Local elected officials are not thanked enough. They spend a lot of time outside of their full-time jobs and away from families. They sort through issues that you don’t have to worry about. The majority of their time is spent doing thankless, unrecognized work. So, thank you. And thank you to your families. They’re paid, but it’s not much. Not in Eden Prairie, anyway. They have to communicate complicated processes without sounding like they’re being wishy-washy or hiding something.
PAUL GROESSEL Eden Prairie Community Editor
They know they might get quoted or misquoted in the newspaper at any time. They answer emails. They sit down for one-on-one conversations with people who want to talk about a concern. I don’t think they get many phone calls from people who want to have coffee just to say thanks or just to shoot the breeze. There’s usually a problem or topic that must be worked out. That goes for the press, especially. A lot of their elected duties are outside of the regular school board or city council meeting. They have subcommittees that come with the gig. They go to well-known, wellattended public events and notso-well-known events like a ribbon cutting or open house. When they make big decisions or a “what if ” happens, their schedule gets even more hectic – the city needs to hire a
new city manager; the school board needs to hire a new superintendent. Many people don’t even know who is in the respective seat and what the person in that chair is responsible for. That hiring process means finding a search firm, a selection process itself. Then, they have extra meetings with the search firm to set up more meetings to find out what the most important criteria in a candidate should be, and what are the most important functions and priorities of the city or schools before they can weed through all the applicants and choose who they’ll select for the first – first! – round of interviews ... See? You’re falling asleep already. You know what, though – we don’t care. We don’t think about that. We don’t think about what elected officials do on a daily or weekly basis. We don’t think about how much time it takes from their family. We just know where the city council will be when we want to complain about tax rates, our water bill or the city spending more money than it needed
on a lug nut that holds up a sign (which is probably too close to the road under the zoning code) at a public building. And you know what – they’ll let you come tell them about it. They invite it, the crazy people. We can do the same with the school board. In Eden Prairie, board members attend multiple events, are on a couple committees and often spend time looking up supplemental information on certain topics. They set aside times to have anyone come talk to the board about anything school related. No, we don’t have to agree with an elected official. Not every politician is the same; not everyone is as committed as another, and things aren’t always done with great intentions. Honest mistakes do happen. We should ask questions and make sure things are running as they should be. But, at the least, when we do question and pry it’s good to keep in mind how much time they put in and how little they’re recognized before firing off questions. Thanks for doing a thankless job.
LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Disappointed in fellow residents following referendum defeat To the editor: As a senior resident of Richfield, I am disappointed and somewhat embarrassed
that the Richfield School referendum was defeated by the voters of Richfield. Our investment in education for the youth in our community is so well worth the few dollars that a tax increase would require to benefit and support our much needed education programs. It seems to be a selfish move on the part of a few residents in our community that somehow don’t understand that giving a little
would benefit a great deal. This referendum needs to be passed at a future date to enable our educators to reach out to the students who will soon become our Richfield adult citizens of tomorrow. For those whom I have heard state that our school administration is not spending money correctly, I would simply state that Supt. Bob Slotterback and the administration are much wiser and more experi-
enced about spending the available educational funds than the Richfield residents are. That is why we place this very important part of our community responsibility in their hands. At the end of the day, and even though we are currently experiencing a struggling economy, we cannot forget the need to educate our young. Gary Ingram Richfield

Drugs FROM PAGE 4 the country. Working under the Office of National Drug Control Policy since 2006, 10 cities are canvassed with the drug study, according to Dana Hunt, who has overseen the study for ABT since 2000. The federal government won’t release final numbers until February because the preliminary numbers are based on two quarters of the year, she said, and final numbers are calculated to represent the entire year. Tests take place within 48 hours of an arrest, since some drugs can leave the body after two days. So, surveys take place while men are being processed or shortly after they’re placed in jail, Hunt said. Men’s identities remain anonymous; their information is replaced with a barcode number on drug test samples and interview responses. Arrestees are asked about use of specific drugs, how they obtained them and other questions. Then they take a drug test to confirm what narcotics are in their system, Hunt said. A lot of men say they are happy to be interviewed and take part in the study, Hunt said. “Why everybody always says that is – because they’re bored.” Processing can take hours, and
there isn’t a lot to do. Plus, surveyors have candy bars. Countrywide, nearly 90 percent agree to participate, Hunt said. But, that doesn’t mean they tell the truth about their drug use. Even though drug-use patterns vary region to region, the admission of drug use is about the same for all regions tested, Hunt said. And, consistently, the more taboo a drug, the more people lie about using it. “[Responses are] quite different by drug, but almost the same everywhere,” Hunt said. Approximately 85 percent of people who tested positive for marijuana admitted to using it in the previous 30 days, while approximately 40 percent of recent cocaine and heroine users confessed. Timelines also play into a willingness to admit drug abuse. Respondents are more likely to admit to abusing a drug within a year, but not days. “It’s hard to admit that you used heroine three days ago. It’s hard to admit you used cocaine three days ago. … There’s a wide range of shame associated with the drug use. Or unwillingness to say they did it,” Hunt said. The sheriff ’s office and Lemaitre said results from the studies serve as one component of the multiple resources used to create prevention efforts, policy and enforcement strategy. Full 2011 results are expected in February.

Goalie for a day Owner of a Richfield embroidery shop is second-oldest player to ever wear pads for an NHL team BY ANDREW WIG SUN NEWSPAPERS It is back to work for the crew at DePaul Lettering in Richfield. But not quite back to normal. “I’m still beaming,” said Paul Deutsch, who still hasn’t tired of recounting the events of Nov. 23, when Minnesota Wild plucked the Apple Valley resident from obscurity, signing the 51year-old as an emergency back-up goalie for a day. The contract made him technically the second-oldest player ever in the NHL, behind only the legendary Gordie Howe. Deutsch and his crew at DePaul Lettering had plenty to do — they typical-
ly use the long Thanksgiving weekend to catch up on their work, in which they put designs and lettering on athletic apparel and other items. But their boss’s brush with fame was a welcome distraction. More than 20 reporters — from media outlets in the U.S. and Canada — called for the story, Deutsch said, giving no hint the attention is getting old. “I’ve got time for everybody, because I know it’s going to simmer down,” Deutsch said. “It’s pretty fun.” Deutsch’s small crew, which is comprised mostly of fellow MinneapolisRoosevelt High School graduates, knew the story was blowing up when the Canadians called. “I guess the big one was when he made Hockey Night in Canada,” said Larry Bellows, who has worked for Deutsch for 16 years. Deutsch made ESPN’s Sportscenter, too, and fielded calls from a number of local outlets and publications from afar, such as the Detroit Free Press. His nephew, Aaron Oxborough, was in

In the most recent robbery, an armed robber entered Central Bank at 2120 Hennepin Ave. S. at about 3:30 p.m., approached the teller counter, showed the teller a gun and demanded cash, according to an FBI news release. A man with a similar description also robbed Bremer Bank at 3001 Hennepin Ave., Minneapolis on Nov. 22. All robberies occurred at gunpoint, according to the FBI. All roads lead Bloomington’s Nik Lentz to the ‘Octagon’ Ultimate fighter will make his eighth appearance in the UFC Dec. 10 BY JARED HUIZENGA – SUN NEWSPAPERS With one champion, four former champions and a combined 26 fight night bonus winners on the Dec. 10 Ultimate Fighting Championship card, diehard mixed martial arts fans have something to look forward to. The card will also include a fighter that should appeal to casual fans, the curious and those that take an interest in Minnesota sports and athletes. On that night, Nik Lentz, a Bloomington Jefferson graduate, Plymouth resident and former University of Minnesota wrestler will fight for the eighth time in the UFC against veteran Mark Bocek at UFC 140. Lentz’s path to mixed martial arts and
the UFC started while he was still wrestling at the U. “The coaches were good, but I didn’t like the way they were training me,” he said. “I thought about wrestling internationally and then I talked with my dad about it and we decided to give mixed martial arts a try.” After his first fight, he knew that he’d made the right decision. “All of my natural abilities translated better to mixed martial arts than they did to wrestling,” he said, adding that he’d always “messed around” with martial arts, including judo and Jiu-Jitsu to help him with his wrestling. Soon he gave up wrestling entirely and left college to start training and fighting full-time. Today he trains at The Academy in Brooklyn Center, where the likes of Brock Lesnar, current Bellator heavyweight champion Cole Konrad and former UFC lightweight champion Sean Sherk also train. walked away with a unanimous decision victory. Since that first fight, he has won four others and has mixed in a draw and a nocontest. In fact, you have to go all the way back to 2007 to find his most recent loss. Lentz comes into the Bocek fight with an overall professional record of 21-3-2 with 1 no-contest, which came in his last fight against Charles Oliveira in June. That fight, which earned Lentz and Oliveira each a $50,000 bonus for Fight of the Night, originally ended as a submission victory for Oliveira. However, the Pennsylvania State Athletic Commission later changed the decision to a no-contest after it ruled that Oliveira had hit Lentz with knee to head while he was on the ground – a move that is illegal under unified mixed martial arts rules. Bocek comes into the fight with a record of 9-4, including a UFC record of 5-4. He has also twice been awarded with Submission of the Night – at UFC 124 last December and at The Ultimate Fighter: Heavyweights Finale in December 2009. “Mark Bocek is a guy that’s been around for a long time, but he’s a bit under the radar,” he said. “But he’s a very dangerous opponent and he’s not to be taken lightly.” Lentz said his training camp has gone really well and he’s hoping that as he progresses as a fighter, fans will get to see
FROM PAGE 14 ported by his close friends and family members, which, he said, is very important for a new fighter. “The support I got from my family and friends was huge,” he said. “There’s lots of money to be made in fighting, but it takes a long time to get there. “When you start out, you’re literally making nothing, so their support – both emotionally and financially – was huge.” Between 2005 and late 2009, Lentz trained and fought mostly in regional shows, compiling a win-loss-draw record of 16-3-1. But despite the impressive record, he was having trouble making the jump to UFC, which is the premier mixed martial arts organization in the world. “I was trying to get in for a long time, but I didn’t have enough big wins,” he said. “The problem was a lot of the guys that would have been big wins for me would take the fight and then cancel it at the last minute because their trainers viewed me as too much of a challenge.” Then, two weeks before UFC 103, which was held Sept. 19, 2009, in Dallas, he got a call from the organization offering him a fight against Rafaello Oliveira. Lentz took the fight on short notice and

Lightweight division Lentz fights in what is arguably the UFC’s most competitive division: lightweight – 155 pounds. Champion Frankie Edgar, who recently defended the title twice against Grey Maynard, headlines the division, which also features No. 1 contender Ben Henderson, Clay Guida, Anthony Pettis, Donald Cerrone, Kenny Florian, Nate Diaz and Sherk. Last fall the UFC made the division even stronger by merging World Extreme Cagefighting, which was also owned by UFC’s parent company Zuffa, into the UFC – Henderson, Pettis and Cerrone were all a part of that merger. When Zuffa purchased WEC in 2006, it eliminated the heavyweight and super heavyweight divisions. Within three years, the WEC’s welterweight, middleweight and light heavyweight divisions were also folded, leaving the WEC with the lightweight division and other divisions for smaller fighters including bantamweight and featherweight. Not only did the merger provide the UFC with an influx of talent in its lightweight division, but it also provided options for lightweights that were fighting in an uncomfortable weight class or were looking for options. Those options
included the addition of the bantamweight and featherweight divisions, which had never been a part of the UFC. Several fighters, including Florian and recent Lentz opponents Charles Oliveira and Tyson Griffin made the 10pound drop to featherweight. When fighters get on a losing streak, Lentz said, things kind of snowballed and some viewed a change as a way to ignite or reignite their career. He, however, has no intention of following the others, and he believes in the long-run it can actually hurt a fighters chances. “There’s no reason for me to drop,” he said. “I’m winning and dropping a weight class isn’t an easy thing to do … it’s ignoring what the actual problem is.” Throughout his career, he has fought at light heavyweight, middleweight and welterweight. But it’s at lightweight, which is more than 20 pounds lighter than his normal “walking around” weight, where he feels most comfortable and has the greatest chance of success. While others might negotiate about who, when or where they fight, Lentz said he doesn’t do that … when they call and offer him a fight he says “yes.” “I’ve always fought tough guys,” he said. “I just need to keep winning and get onto the pay-per-views. What is mixed martial arts? In simplest terms, mixed martial arts is a combat sport that combines elements of wrestling, boxing, kickboxing and different disciplines of martial arts, including Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, judo, karate and Thai kickboxing (Muay Thai). The UFC is the premier MMA organization in the world and is owned by Zuffa, which also owns and operates Strikeforce. There are other national organizations out there including Bellator Fighting Championship, Shark Fights and Titan Fighting Championships in the United States and Dream in Japan. Fighters are grouped into weight classes. Currently, the UFC has seven primary classes. Fights take place in a ring or a cage, which can vary in design between promotions. The UFC utilizes an eight-sided cage, dubbing it the “Octagon.”
Time limits for the fights also vary slightly between organizations, but a typical fight will consist of three 3-minute rounds for nontitle and nonmain event fights. Title fights are five 5-minute rounds. Recently, the UFC changed time limits on nontitle main event fights to five 5-minute rounds as well. Like boxing, MMA fights are scored on a 10-point must system, with judges awarding 10 points to the fighter they feel won the round and 9 points or fewer to the other fighter. Fighters are judged on components including ring control, striking and aggressiveness. Fights can also end before they reach a decision via submission, knock out or technical knock out. Fighters can verbally submit to the referee or more often they “tap out,” which means that when they’re stuck in a submission hold they physically tap their opponent to let him know they are submitting. Knockouts occur when a fighter is knocked unconscious by an opponent. Technical knockouts occur when a fighter is being hit with punches, kicks, elbows or knees and can no longer mount a defense. Most organizations operate with a standard set of rules, many of which are in place to protect fighters, including no knees or kicks to a grounded opponent, no “soccer kicks” or stomps to the head of a grounded opponent and no “12-6” elbows.
UFC 140 Lentz can be seen competing Saturday, Dec. 10 in Toronto at 4:50 p.m. streaming live on Facebook. Visit ufc.com for links and details.

Miss Richfield FROM PAGE 1 Richfield belted out campy musical numbers, ad-libbed monologues and made fun of the audience any chance she got. No one is spared Miss Richfield’s barbs. Jews, blacks, Mexicans, white Anglo-Saxons and especially gays are all targets of her joking quips. She even finds time for AIDS jokes. “I don’t know if you all have AIDS, or just some of you,” Miss Richfield wondered aloud to the crowd in her comically oblivious manner last Thursday, which was World Aids Day. The proceeds from the preview show went to local AIDS charities. Based on a show of hands, the audience was mostly gay, and so is King, but the 49-year northeast Minneapolis resident said his crowds are typically a 50-50 mix between straight and gay. The character, Miss Richfield 1981, was born in 1996, when one night the 1981 Richfield High School graduate dressed in drag, “sort of as a joke,” he said, and headed to a party at the Gay 90s bar in downtown Minneapolis. “It was my first time at a drag bar,” King recounted. “I got a little tipsy, because I wasn’t used to drinking, and
asked to perform.” Soon, King was emceeing drag shows at the bar, before taking his act to Bryant Lake Bowl. And don’t call him a drag queen. “I’m a cabaret performer who performs in drag,” King explained over lunch the day of his preview performance. “I don’t really think it’s a drag queen.” Whatever her genre, Miss Richfield is a selfconsumed, clumsy, out-of-shape — Russ King evidenced by her shortness of breath after any extended musical number — obnoxious, ignorant, loud-mouth. But she gets away with it, perhaps because she is funny. Last Thursday, she made fun of the accent of a native Mexican audience member, poked fun — based on typical stereotypes — at the row of Jewish theatre-goers sitting up front, and picked on the middle-aged white guy from Minnetonka throughout the performance. income. A family of four, for instance, would have to earn $50,000 per year or less to get in, paying rents of $775 per month for one-bedroom units, and $931 for twobedroom units at the proposed Pillsbury Avenue complex. Those rates are at or above the average rents in Richfield, according to Steven-Scott Management, the firm that would manage the apartments. Among the more than 160 residents in attendance, of chief concern was the “workforce housing” label, which presenters distinguished from the “affordable housing” term that has been commonly used in dialog during the controversy.

John Stark, Richfield community development director, answers a question at a public meeting held by Ron Clark Construction to hear the concerns of residents who oppose the development of a high density apartment complex that would replace the vacant city garage at the 7600 block of Pillsbury Avenue South. (Photo by Andrew Wig – Sun Newspapers) Opponents to the proposed development have contended it does not fit into the neighborhood, which is comprised mostly of single-family houses. At the core of their voiced concerns is the influx of lower-income earners the apartments would attract. The opponents say the development would lower property values while potentially bringing unsavory elements to the neighborhood. Attempting to quell those concerns, a representative of Steve-Scott Management said that based on the criteria for “workforce housing,” people like teachers, police officers, nurses and carpenters would populate the building. Nevertheless, the question remained: Why attempt to attract and concentrate lower-income residents? One answer was that, from the developer’s perspective, the market for workforce housing is better than market rate housing. Opponents to the complex also have cited a disparity between the number of residential units dedicated for low income, compared to neighboring communities such as Edina. “Build it in Edina first,” shouted one audience member. Developers noted a market study that found for every single unit of affordable housing in the city, there are two jobs paying less than $40,000 per year. No matter any disparity in low-income housing, Richfield needs more of it, developers contend. Ron Clark Construction cited a Met Council report that states Richfield will have a need for 765 new affordable housing units between now and 2020. To this statement, a few in the crowd repeated the question, “Why?” This was in keeping with an aggressive tone the audience established at the meet-
ing’s onset. When the subject turned to race, and developers explained the minority demographic they would attempt to attract to the complex — in keeping with the Fair Housing Act — one audience member, the one who made the Edina comment, accused presenters of race baiting. “It’s not about race, it’s about class,” he said, accusing the developers of trying to steer the lower class toward certain areas, namely to Richfield, and away from places like Edina. It is an issue of “economic justice,” he said. One attendee asked why the development has to be a housing complex at all. City community development director John Stark said it is not part of the city’s philosophy to dictate such, as long as developments fall within zoning parameters. “We do not go out there and tell developers what to develop,” Stark said. The land occupied by the vacant city garages is zoned for medium-to-high density housing, and would have to be rezoned for high density if the project is to move forward. Despite some testy moments, Ron Clark said he thought the meeting was productive. “I frankly thought the meeting went well for having so many people there. In the beginning they were up in arms but I thought the meeting settled,” the developer said following the gathering. There is no set timeline for the development. Next, the construction firm will evaluate the issues raised at the meeting, Clark said. “Our plans are to get our group and go through all of the questions and concerns and work with the city to try to address those comments the best we can.”

Goalie FROM PAGE 9 Mexico over Thanksgiving, oblivious to the news until he returned to the States. “I turned on my phone and I had like 10 text messages from my buddies,” said Oxborough, who works part-time in Deutsch’s shop. Friends from as far away as San Francisco had seen his uncle on Sportscenter. “Kind of crazy to come home to that, you know?” the nephew said. Deutsch, who never played hockey beyond the junior varsity level and didn’t play goalie until he was 37 — in a rec league — called the scenario a “dumb luck miracle,” a case of right place, right time. Deutsch had served the Wild as a fill-in practice goalie for most of the past decade, a gig he won through his connection to former assistant coach Mike Ramsey. The good friends went to Roosevelt High School in Minneapolis together. When Ramsey first called on Deutsch to fill in as a practice goalie, “he said, ‘you’ll be fine. Just come on down there. Don’t do anything crazy. Just stay in the way of the shots,’” recounted Deutsch, who admitted he did not win the roll due to his skill at the position. In fact, it was this lack of skill that got him the role, Deutsch said, because the players would not feel threatened by his presence. “Every once I a while,” he proudly noted, “I get a piece of one, I block one.” Deutsch continued in his role as practice fill-in, dropping everything several times a season to get to the rink when called upon, until the coaching regime led by Todd Richards took over. Gone was Ramsey, and Deutsch’s connection to the Wild. “He was bitter for two years,” Bellows said. But Richards was fired after last season, and back in the fold was Deutsch, when Mike Yeo took over as head coach. Then, the day before Thanksgiving, the “dumb luck miracle” occurred. “(Niklas) Backstrom (starting goalie) had an emergency, has to leave for the birth of his first child; no one’s going to miss that,” Deutsch explained. “(Matt) Hackett, the backup goalie (called up from the minors) is in Houston, can’t get to Minneapolis because it’s the day before Thanksgiving, busiest travel day of the year.” It left the Wild potentially with no one to back up Josh Harding, who was starting in place of Backstrom. Then, Deutsh’s relative inexperience at the net became an advantage again, due to an NHL rule that the team could not sign a player with professional experience. So Deutsch got the call, and got thrown to the media. “I didn’t know what to say,”
Paul Deutsch, owner of a Richfield embroidery and screen printing shop, is still beaming after his adventure the day before Thanksgiving, when the Minnesota Wild, under desperate circumstances, signed the Apple Valley resident to serve as a backup goalie for a day. (Photo by Andrew Wig – Sun Newspapers) Deutsch said. “Yes I was nervous. My mouth was dry. I was trying to answer their questions. There’s 30 people in there snapping off pictures, and on the other side is me? C’mon.” Earlier that day, the DePaul Lettering crew noted Deutsch’s mental state as he prepared to head to St. Paul. “He was a nervous mess,” Bellows observed. Finally, donning former Wild goalie Manny Fernandez’s old pads, Deutsch took the ice at Excel Energy Center with the team for warm-ups. He knew he was out of his league, literally, but said the players treated him like he was the real deal. “The players are such pros that when you’re there, they treat you like a player,” Deutsch said. Warmups comprised all the ice time he would get. Turned out, Hackett arrived just before game time, meaning Deutsch would take a seat in the luxury box — along with his 14-year-old daughter’s hockey team — instead of on the bench. Relieved of his duty, Deutsch had mixed feelings. It was a relief at first, he said, “and then I was bummed out, because greed set in and I wanted more.” As of last week, workers at DePaul lettering said the attention from their boss’s brush with real NHL ice time — or at least a real NHL bench — had not yet gone away. “I don’t see it happening for a while,” said Bellows, who, like the other DePaul employees, watched the game on TV.
“We all saw it going on,” Bellows said. “Couldn’t believe it. It’s hard to believe everybody’s making such a big deal out of it, you know?” Deutsch attributes the attention to his age, 51, and a thirst among the media for a positive sports story — the sexual abuse scandals at Penn State and Syracuse are still developing, while stories about athletes in trouble with the law come crop
COLONIAL
up regularly. Reveling in the attention, Deutsch’s concerns have gone from stopping NHL slap shots, to finding a way to stay grounded, although he is still flying high. “I’ve got to make sure I don’t catch a case of big-shot-itis,” the one-time pro goalie said, “because there’s no cure for that.”

Right Way Painting Solutions Another summer has come and gone with winter here for the next several months. Many of us have been forced to put off inside projects for various reasons including economic hard times. Many of us have put off projects to save money in case things get worse. Based on the unemployment numbers, Minnesota’s unemployment is much lower than most states and has continued to improve over the last year. Many of us are in situations where our home value has decreased and it is hard to even think about selling our homes. Winter is a great time to do inside projects! Painting is one of the most cost effective ways to enhance the beauty of our homes. Painting the walls, ceilings and trim can dramatically change the appearance of our homes. Today’s paints do not leave odors that are unappealing. The best reason to paint in the winter is we are not as busy as we are spring, summer and fall. This gives you the opportunity to take advantage of our better pricing. I live in Richfield and many of the homes in the Richfield, Bloomington and Edina
areas are getting older and the wood work, windows and paneling are not in the best of shape. We can make these areas of your home look new with either painting or refinishing. Painting or refinishing these areas is much more cost effective than replacing windows or wood work. I’m Paul Moore, the owner of Right Way Painting Solutions. I’ve been painting homes for over 20 years. Being a former Shop Teacher, I have a great background in painting, finishing and wood replacement and repair. We do work for several townhome associations, Nursing Homes and residential properties in the Richfield, Bloomington and Edina areas. We remove wallpaper, replace trim, paint windows, woodwork, walls, ceilings, kitchen cabinets, paneling and cement floors. We give our customers great value with being able to do more than just painting. We offer a two year warrantee on our labor. We supply references and we would be happy to give you a free estimate. Please give us a call at 612-839-2239.

Miller is top returnee for Richfield gymnasts BY GREG KLEVEN – SUN NEWSPAPERS Richfield girls gymnastics team has a new head coach after Nikki Saf-Sanders stepped down after last season. But that new coach is no stranger to the Spartan gymnastics program. Matt Norris has been Richfield’s assistant coach for the past nine seasons. Norris said he is excited about his new role. “Being head coach is more work than being an assistant, but it has been fun working with the girls and running the pre-season practices the way I want,” said Norris. “I am looking for our girls to continue to improve throughout the season.” Richfield’s tri-captains are junior Stephanie McGinness, senior Courtney Wood and senior Shayla Jeffers.
Senior Jade Turgeon has been appointed honorary captain. “Jade was out for the hockey team before its season was cancelled,” said. Norris. “So she came out for our gymnastics team. Jade has previous competitive experience with our gymnastics program.” One top returnee is junior Courtney Miller. “She came close to qualifying for state last season and will be our top allarounder and scorer this season,” said Norris. Norris is counting on junior Justine Hogan, junior Taylor Knox and ninthgrader Nicole Birmingham for varsity contributions. Richfield’s gymnastics squad will host Simley in a 6 p.m. Classic Suburban Conference dual meet Thursday, Dec. 8.

From: Santa Claus To: You
From: Santa Claus To: You
By: Ali Holman, co-owner of www.coreconditioningtraining.com I think we can all agree that eating is fun. Not only is it a way for us to socialize, reward ourselves and comfort ourselves, it also is the one area of fitness where people have the most trouble. Wouldn’t it be great to know that the choices you make are actually helping your fitness program? More importantly, wouldn’t it be even better to banish the word “diet” from your vocabulary? Chances are, if you are embarking on a “diet”, it will have a beginning and an end. The end is usually followed by slowly going back to old habits and ends you right back where you started. With our clients, we really encourage them to focus on a Lifestyle Change with room for “cheat meals” and realistic goals; which inevitably lead to lifelong results and without the emotional roller coaster of a diet.

Core/Conditioning Training’s List of “Fat Burning Foods”
Child’s Name 1.
eggs
low-fat dairy
Eggs are high in protein and low in calories. You may have heard all the warnings about eggs and your health: opt for eggwhites for the low-cholesterol, fatburning effect. Eggs also contain the vitamin B-12, a great supplement for breaking down fat cells.
Studies show that women who eat low-fat dairy products (such as non-fat yogurt and low-fat milk) three to four times a day lost 70 percent more fat than low-dairy dieters.
beans
oatmeal
Beans are one of the best sources of protein, fiber and iron. Some of the best beans to ear are: • Navy Beans • White Beans • Kidney Beans • Lima Beans
Oatmeal is loaded with soluble fiber, which helps reduce blood cholesterol by flushing those bad digestive acids out of your system. Skip the flavored oatmeals - you lose out on all the health benefits. If you must sweeten your oatmeal, do so by adding fruit.
olive oil
lean meats
Certain fats are good for you, and your body needs them. Olive oil is one of those “good fats.” It helps you burn fat and keeps your cholesterol down. One ounce of extra virgin olive oil contains about 85% of the daily value for monosaturated fat.
2. 3. 4. Address
Search for lean meats - chicken (baked, broiled, grilled), fish and turkey - which are all high in protein. It is a good rule of thumb to consume at least one half-gram protein per pound of body weight each day. A chicken breast gets you well on your way, with about 22 grams of protein.
whole grains
interval training
Our body needs carbohydrates, despite what the fad diets tell you. Avoid processed carbohydrates such as white breads, bagles, pastas and white rice and look for whole grains that have not been processed and contain the fiber and minerals your body needs.
Interval training is defined as short, repeated bouts of intense exercise with minimal rest. You can burn major calories and get an all-over workout in less than 30 minutes. When you see people who are “cut,” chances ar they are partaking in interval training.
