Jewelry storeowner is new chamber of commerce board chair BY ANDREW WIG – SUN NEWSPAPERS Jennifer Bornoldt became the newest board chair of the Richfield Chamber of Commerce this year. Now, in her second month on the job, the owner of Hub Jewelers is tasked with helping to strengthen Richfield’s business community, and in a sense, Richfield itself. Bornholdt looks to pick up where recent board chairs left off and help lead the ongoing redevelopment of Richfield, while luring new members into the Chamber fold. “I think it’s fair to say that Jennifer’s going to keep the momentum going,” Chamber President Steven Lindgren said. The last two chamber chairs, Jim Melssen and Tim Carter, were successful in helping recent projects like the redevelopment of Lyndale Garden Center and Kmart site get off the ground, Lindgren said. And with work on State Highway 62 finished, and access to Lyndale Avenue improved, the Corridor has a bright future, he and other community leaders maintain. But there is work to be done within the chamber itself, the president admitted. “We need to strengthen our membership,” he said. “We didn’t have as many new members last year as we’re used to.” Membership hovers somewhere below 180. At its peak there were around 225, Lindgren said.

The new phenomenon of strong Richfield caucus turnouts that began four years ago continued Tuesday night, as 271 Richfield residents convened at Richfield High School to voice support for the candidate that will challenge President Barack Obama in November. Results from the nine Richfield precincts mirrored statewide results, with Rick Santorum taking first and garnering 114 non-binding votes. Ron Paul was the second favorite among Richfield caucus-goers, receiving 81 votes. Next came Mitt Romney, with 52, and Newt Gingrich, getting 22 votes. Two resolute Sarah Palin supporters wrote the Alaskan’s name on the yellow slips of paper passed around the high school classrooms. Contrary to the statewide numbers, this year’s caucus turnout was similar to the Republican showing four years ago, when three times more politicos attended than ever before, said Craig Marston, Republican District 63 chair. That time, an open presidential seat and

Under-construction CVS store vandalized, again Near-complete Richfield store targeted 3 times in 2 and a half weeks BY ANDREW WIG – SUN NEWSPAPERS The CVS Pharmacy under construction at 6540 Penn Ave. S. in Richfield was vandalized earlier this month for the second time in three days and the third time in two and a half weeks, incurring a cumulative $14,220 to $19,220 in damage, according to Richfield Public Safety. In the most recent trespassing someone broke a lock and entered the building through a roof hatch overnight Feb. 2-3, inflicting an estimated $10,000 to $15,000 in damage, a police incident report states. Interior signs were damaged. Paint cans had been opened and their contents splashed on newly carpeted areas. Caulking had been applied to walls and

carpet. A water cooler was torn off a wall, and a mirror in the women’s bathroom had been shattered, according to Lt. Mike Flaherty of Richfield Police. Days prior, on Jan. 31, someone entered the pharmacy-to-be overnight, again via roof, removing a wired-shut vent. Large amounts of paint had been thrown on the ceiling, and ceiling tiles were broken, Flaherty reported. Paint was also spilled on some carpet and there was damage where a cart had been pushed down a stairwell. Nothing appeared to be missing from the building, but damage was estimated at $1,500, according to a police incident report. The first in the string of vandalisms came Jan. 17, when caulking was squeezed on the walls and ceiling lights were broken, amounting to $2,700 in damage, an incident report says. Workers on Tuesday were putting finishing touches on the building, which is expected to open in March. CVS repreCVS: TO NEXT PAGE

U of M researchers see vegetable consumption at STEM school double Pictures on trays promoted healthy eating, study finds BY ANDREW WIG – SUN NEWSPAPERS Richfield STEM School was the site of a University of Minnesota study last year that found a new way to get kids to eat their vegetables. According to the research letter published Feb. 1 in the Journal of the American Medical Association, researchers affixed pictures of vegetables on lunch trays and observed whether the kindergarten- through- fifth-graders would eat what they saw, and they did. Students picking vegetables in the lunch line more than doubled — from 42 to 96 — on the days their trays had the pictures. Richfield Schools Nutrition Services Supervisor Deb LaBounty understood the logic. “Kids a lot of the time need examples to follow,” she said. “This was almost like a puzzle.” With that in mind, the intriguing results did not surprise. When the researchers came to her with the proposal, “the first thing I thought was,

this could be fantastic, because I think it could work,” LaBounty said. The research took place on a monthly basis for most of last school year, after the U contacted Deb LaBounty through another nutrition director for Saint Paul Schools. Researchers knew they wanted to look at a first ring suburb, and knew LaBounty was open to being studied, she said. Despite the promising results, Richfield Schools are yet to follow the study’s lead and incorporate the visual strategy into the everyday lunch routine. They simply don’t have the time to prepare the trays, LaBounty said. But she added she has been fielding calls from tray manufacturers interested in producing the special vegetable-promoting trays. The search for a way to get roughage in kids’ bellies and ingrain in them healthy eating habits that they may take into adulthood will continue in Richfield Schools. Next, they plan to study whether handing students vegetable samples while they wait in the lunch line could also promote a healthy diet. “Anyway we can get kids to eat their vegetables is a good thing,” LaBounty said.

Explanation offered in Richfield city garage assessment discrepancy City signed option to sell property to Ron Clark Construction for price well below county-determined value BY ANDREW WIG – SUN NEWSPAPERS Hennepin County has issued an explanation to the $2.5 million discrepancy between its assessment of the Richfield city garages and the price at which the city of Richfield has agreed to sell the property. The question stumped city staff when a resident brought it up during the public comment period at the Jan. 24 City Council meeting. Ghislaine Ball wondered why the city signed an option agreement with Ron Clark construction to sell city garage land for about $416,000, when a 2010 assessment by Hennepin County pegged the property’s value at nearly $3 million. However, the sale, which would allow Edina-based Ron Clark Construction to build a proposed 70-unit apartment complex on the parcel, is yet to occur. Neighbors have opposed the project due to its high-density nature and its designation as a “workforce” — or affordable — housing complex, targeting those with limited incomes. After a week of head-scratching, a Jan.

30 email to the city from County Assessor Kim Jensen offered an explanation to the discrepancy. The answer revolves around the obscure term, “shadow value,” which is the value of non-taxable property. Hennepin County assesses such property every six years, on a “mass basis,” conducting minimal analysis since the land does not generate revenue anyway, according to Jensen’s explanation. “If you have an appraisal, that is going to be your best indication of value,” she wrote. Additionally, the assessment commissioned by the city did not include the buildings, which appraiser Eric Bjorklund determined would actually decrease the property’s value, due to demolition costs. Further explaining the difference, the parcel the city optioned to Ron Clarkj is about 1.7 acres, compared to the 2.2 acres the county evaluated. However, the explanation has led to new objections from Pillsbury Commons opponents. Bjorklund’s assessment was based on a the current medium-high density zoning classification, per Richfield’s comprehensive plan. The city garage land, however would have to be rezoned to high density for the development, and it is unclear is how the change would alter the city garage’s value. During an interview, Bjorklund said he was unsure how the value would change if an assessment assumed high-density zoning.

But he added that typically, a higherdensity zoning classification would increase a property’s value. “Usually one would think it would, yeah,” he said. The uncertain nature of the Pillsbury Commons proposal made it difficult to foresee the necessity to re-zone the property, Community Planning Director John Stark said. “There are only so many assumptions (the appraiser) can make,” he said. “He doesn’t have a crystal ball.” Stark said he was uncertain whether the city knew the project would require rezoning when the assessment was conducted in June. The Ron Clark proposal could still change, Stark noted, as the firm has not yet submitted official applications requesting the rezoning and comprehensive plan amendments the project would require. The city could have the property rezoned, City Manager Steve Devich said in a memo to the city council, but the option agreement is legally binding, so the city is stuck with the $415,000 selling price, should the project gain final approval.

Eden Prairie’s registry: A good example to follow Domestic Partner Registry affords some benefits to couples The Eden Prairie City Council is the latest to approve a Domestic Partner Registry that legally enables couples living together and not married to acquire certain benefits. Domestic partners can be any couple, including same-sex and heterosexual couples. After filling out a one-page form and in some cases paying a slight fee, these couples can be eligible for bereavement leave, family leave and insurance benefits at companies that recognize domestic partnerships. The couple must be unmarried and living together, live in the city and be committed to one another to the same extent as married persons are to each other, except for the traditional

DON HEINZMAN Editorial Writer

marital status and solemnities. Back in 2008, former Gov. Tim Pawlenty vetoed legislation that would have allowed partners of state, federal and city employees to a have the same benefits reserved for married couples. His veto, however, didn’t prohibit individual cities from approving an ordinance for their own domestic partner registry. Minneapolis, St. Paul, Edina, Golden Valley, St. Louis Park, Eagan and Richfield have approved these registries. Rochester, Red Wing and Duluth also have them. The Eden Prairie City Council wrestled with the registry before approving it on second reading, 4-1. One council member, Brad

Aho, said it wasn’t needed, that only nine people in neighboring Edina registered for the benefits and only 2 percent of the cities in the state have adopted it. More to the point, he argued that the ordinance undermines marriage because it infers that any marriage is as equal as the partnership. Councilmember Kathy Nelson said the proposal has nothing to do with the proposed marriage amendment that will be on the ballot in November. “The ordinance,” she said, “does not make a statement in favor of or against any state law, and it is not political.” Another council member, Sherry Butcher Wickstrom, reminded that the city has a Manifesto which encourages diversity. It’s a way of acting and not just talking about diversity, she said. Mayor Nancy Tyra-Lukens was surprised more people didn’t object to the registry. The pattern in cities where it has been

passed is that most people find the registry reasonable. The mayor struck the right chord when she said: “The ordinance may not affect many people, but we deal with things that affect a small number of people all the time, as well as decisions that face all Eden Prairie residents.” That’s the genius of local government; it is local enough to be concerned about all of its neighbors. This action by the Eden Prairie City Council is to be commended, because it enables citizens to get benefits under the law regardless of their marital status as long as they live together in their community. Other cities should follow Eden Prairie’s example. Don Heinzman is an editorial writer for ECM Publishers. Sun Newspapers welcomes responses to this and any other editorial page commentary. Effective ways to close the achievement gap BY JOE NATHAN – GUEST COLUMNIST “This was monumental,” according to Gary Cunningham, vice president at the Northwest Area Foundation in St. Paul. About 200 educators met last week to learn from some of Minnesota’s public schools that have been most effective in closing the achievement gap. They were from district and charter public schools, and they focused on helping students. The African American Leadership Forum (AALF), General Mills Foundation and the University of Minnesota co-sponsored the meeting. Cunningham believes “All children will benefit if this continues.” I agree. Eric Mahmund, co-founder

and executive Director of Harvest Prep in Minneapolis, was one of the keynote speakers. Harvest Prep frequently has appeared on lists of Minnesota’s “Beat the Odds” schools. That’s because despite the fact that more than 90% of its students are from low-income families, and more than 95% are African American, 82% of the schools students tested “proficient” in math, and 76% tested proficient in reading. Both are above the state average. Mahmoud listed five key gaps in Minnesota. He’s found that “schools can overcome all of them.” • Preparation Gap (too many youngsters from low income families come to kindergarten with low birth weight, not having

heard enough words or encouragement. • Time Gap: Given the preparation gap, many youngsters from low-income families need a longer day and a longer year. • Belief gap. Mahmoud called this “the most important gap.” It’s the belief of some people that students from low-income families cannot succeed in school. • Teaching Gap – failing to use research based approaches. • Leadership Gap – More leaders needed who know how to overcome other gaps. Mahmoud recalled the 1979 words of the late Harvard Professor, Ron Edmonds: “How many effective schools would you have to see to be persuaded of the educability of poor children? If your answer is more

than one, then I submit that you have reasons of your own for preferring to believe that pupil performance derives from family background instead of school response to family background. … We can, whenever and wherever we choose, successfully teach all children whose schooling is of interest to us. We already know more than we need to do that. Whether or not we do it must finally depend on how we feel about the fact that we haven’t so far.” Bill Wilson is former Minnesota Commissioner of the Department of Human Rights and founder of Higher Ground Academy in St. Paul; another “Beat the Odds” school lists. Wilson emphasized the need to respect family culture and to promote high expectations. Wilson was joined by Mary Donaldson, director of St. Paul’s Concordia Creative Learning Academy, in stressing that successful schools with low-income young people must teach arts as well as academics. CCLA also is a “Beat the Odds” school. “This is not just about test prep,” Donaldson pointed out. “It’s about helping prepare youngsters to be active, caring, involved citizens.” Chris Stewart, formerly a Minneapolis (District) Public School Board member and a member of the African American Leadership Forum, explained that “this was a pilot. We

wanted to see if people would come. Today was a trial. This was long overdue, and I hope it’s the start of something.” Jeffrey Hassan, an attorney and one of the AALF leaders, told me he “felt wonderful” about the fact that about 200 people decided to attend the Saturday sessions. He sees this as “a good start” of conversations in Minnesota, not about whether district or charters are better, but about what can be learned from the state’s most effective schools. That’s exactly what young people need – more pragmatism, less politics.

www.minnlocal.com – Thursday, Feb. 16, 2012 – Richfield Sun-Current

Inside the caucus: BY ANDREW WIG – SUN NEWSPAPERS Republicans in Richfield matched the rest of the state in largely preferring Rick Santorum as the Republican nominee during their caucus Tuesday, Feb. 6. But caucusing is a grass roots process, and one patch in the northwest corner of Richfield had its own findings. Precinct 3 was comprised of participants of all stripes. Most wore plain ones, but one firebrand wore the red, white and blue kind — on his baseball cap, on his tie, on his belt buckle, on his canvass tote. There was also the wife of a hedge fund manager with four kids, the 43-year-old single father of one, the 20-year-old crew-cut blond, the 58-yearold former Swede wearing a buttondown Ed hardy shirt, the 31-year-old daughter of military man, from Savannah, Ga., and more, 29 in all. Arriving early to the school, which hosted in separate rooms the nine Richfield precincts of Senate District 63, the early arrivers have a chance to chat. It is the first caucus for some; others are veterans. Harold Klein, the single father, caucused Democratic the last presidential election, serving as a delegate at the ensuing convention that year. “It seems really laid back here,” he notes. The Democratic caucus, he says, was much more chaotic, so unorganized he voted in the wrong precinct and no on noticed. Jerry Motz, 78, is likewise an experienced caucuser. However, “usually from past caucuses we don’t accomplish very much,” he laments. He wants to grapple with the issues, and while tonight’s discussion will fall short of hand-to-hand combat, there will be some verbal sparring. Former Richfield Mayor Marty Kirsch is the convener for the precinct. He reminds the room there is some pressure to quickly finish their straw poll, but one man who looks like University of Wisconsin men’s basketball coach Bo Ryan, has a problem with that. He will not bow to the impatient outside forces. “I think we came here to discuss and talk about it,” he said. “I don’t know why we’re under anybody’s constraints.” And so they are off, but first they are reminded that this meeting is official. They say the Pledge of Allegiance,

something they did not to at the Democratic proceedings four years ago, Klein notes. Kirsch assigns Brenna Murphy, the Georgian, as secretary. She reads aloud letters from U.S. Senate candidate Dan “Doc” Severson and Hennepin County Sheriff Richard Stanek. They urge the assembled Republicans to restore this country to greatness. With the assemblage’s unifying ideology established, Kirsch explains why everyone is here: Their main order of business is to elect delegates that will attend the district convention in March, when they will feature further political delineation. Then, because this is an informal, formal process, the crowd picks a chair, vice chair and again, a secretary — Murphy was first selected to take notes to kick off the meeting, but now the rest of the room has to agree that she is indeed fit for the job. They decide she is; her handwriting is just fine, one says. They pick Kirsch, the convener, to continue to lead the room, this time as the official precinct chair. A stout man who looks to be in his 30s is selected as vice chair.

An account of one evening in the belly of Republican activism in Richfield

All well and good, “but I’m afraid we’re gonna need somebody with a backbone very thick, because they’re gonna pull out stuff on these candidates like we won’t believe. Whoever that candidate is, is gonna have a heck of a time,” she predicts. “And I think Newt Gingrich will

stand up and stand firm. And yeah, he’s got problems, but they’re gonna find problems with everybody.” Daniel Daehlin, the one with the belt buckle, agrees. He would pay to see Gingrich debate Obama, he says. “We INSIDE THE CAUCUS: TO PAGE 11

The blow-by-blow Now, they can talk. But first, they unplug the noisy refrigerator. The secretary reminds the room, “If we don’t remember to plug it back in there’s gonna be a lot of angry teachers tomorrow.” One of them can’t resist the opening. “Their union contract says they don’t have to teach if their pop’s cold,” he zings. A former realtor, Gail Lund, who declined to give her age but did say she had attended a Senior Republican meeting earlier that day and appears to be just on the edge of that demographic, gets up first. She likes all the candidates, but only one has her full endorsement. Santorum is plain nice: “What a sweetheart. I think he’s great.” Ron Paul knows money: “I think he would clear up the economy here in the United States quicker than anybody.” The Mormon candidate’s family is attractive, at least: “Mitt Romney, what a family. Awe, they’re like a picture book family. When you see them on stage — the kids, the grandkids — they’re all perfect.”

Inside the caucus FROM PAGE 9 need (Barry) Goldwaters and a reincarnation of Ronald Reagan. We don’t need a John McCain redux.” And definitely not Ron Paul, says Daehlin, a self-described former libertarian. He will later refer to the candidate’s supporters as Ron Paul supporters as “Ron Paulistas,” to Murphy’s objection. He says Sept. 11, 2001, brought him back from his naïve libertarian fantasy land, and it is Paul’s Dove-ish foreign policy that concerns him, especially considering that it is “very likely in the next couple of months” that Iran will “lob some missiles over Tel Aviv.” He has picked a tough crowd, however. If Iran bombs Tel Aviv or other extreme global conflicts arise, Paul would go, “OK, so how do we deal with this, and he probably blows some (stuff) stuff up and takes care of it,” says Murphy, the military daughter. And besides, says one man, war is mainly a remote endeavor these days, so Paul’s inclination to reduce the U.S. military’s foreign presence is justifiable. “It’s people pushing buttons and missiles flying all over the place,” he

New Gingrich supporter Daniel Paul Daehlin vehemently argues against Ron Paul for the Republican nomination at Tuesday’s Republican caucus in Richfield. He cited concerns over Paul’s Middle East policy and showed worry that Paul may splinter the party by running as an independent should he not be nominated. (Photo by Andrew Wig – Sun Newspapers) observes. “This isn’t World War II. We’re not invading Normandy anymore.”

And anyway, there is plenty to concern U.S. citizens within their own borders, the Paul backers say. Murphy

cites the President’s recent signing of the National Defense Authorization Act that has been read as an authorization to detain U.S. citizens indefinitely. “I believe Paul is the only one with the temerity to stand up against this,” Murphy says. “He will stand up and fight for us as citizens of this country, not as subjects.” Another caucuser, the mother of four who appears to be in her 30s, agrees with the Paul supporters on principal, but is moved by greater pangs of practicality. “The words (Paul) says are great, but unfortunately with every politician it’s a whole package,” she says. In a common argument of the evening, she says that while she likes what Paul says, he simply would not beat Obama. “I have to go with what pill is gonna hurt the least going down,” the mother said. “We have to go with somebody who is a big name, and who we know.” After another voter conveys the same sentiment, someone else raises the point that, forgetting about electability, “if everybody who loved Ron Paul voted for him … ” The man who looks like the basketball coach finishes the sentence: “He’d have 20 percent of the vote.” INSIDE THE CAUCUS: TO PAGE 16

Chamber FROM PAGE 1 phone immediately and call Steve and say, ‘Here I am. I’d like to join the chamber,’” she said. “I believe there are probably a lot of other people out there like that.” The chamber chair and president agree they could more effectively reach them. “We need to do a better job of welcoming people,” Lindgren said. “We need to team people with prospective members and get them invited to a lunch or an evening or an event that we have. It’s just breaking in, getting to know these people.” In that vein, they are continuing an initiative meant to strengthen their current membership, working to meet every chamber member faceto-face, all in the name of strengthening Richfield’s business network — and the city as a whole. “We’re the voice of the business community,” Lindgren said, “and you wouldn’t have a very strong community if you didn’t have a very strong voice.” To grasp that impact, look at the tax ledger, Lindgren urged, noting that businesses pay 39 percent of property taxes in Richfield. And the business commu-

That was one of the things I struggled with at first.” She managed to get her footing, though, and said the chamber has helped, keeping her informed of community happenings and getting her more involved with the city, such as connecting her with the Richfield Ambassadors program. “It’s quite a successful operation she has over there, and it’s a great success story in Richfield,” Lindgren said. She is the new Richfield Chamber of Commerce board chair, and Bornholdt is an outsider no more.

Rep. Ellison talks with Richfield middle-schoolers Answers to the world’s problems are in their heads, he tells them

Rep. Keith Ellison speaks casually with Richfield Middle School students as they pitch their questions during a round-table discussion Monday. The students said they were impressed and nervous, but settled down as the halfhour conversation covering a wide range of topics got underway. (Photo by Andrew Wig – Sun Newspapers)

BY ANDREW WIG – SUN NEWSPAPERS Rep. Keith Ellison (D-Minn.) says he doesn’t worry about inspiring people. He may have done just that, however, when he visited Richfield Middle School Monday for a round table discussion with a selection of six 6-8 graders. As the students quizzed Ellison on a range of topics, the question came up: Do you feel you’ve inspired anyone to follow in your footsteps? “I don’t know. I don’t think about things like that,” the U.S. congressman said. “I just do the best that I can do and try to set a good example and if something I said or did makes someone want to be a better person, then that’s good.” Whether or not it’s his aim, it turns out, “he’s a very inspiring guy,” said Sam Yiglowski, one of the participating middle-schoolers. “His words just make so much sense. He’s a very powerful speaker.”

Ellison took a relaxed tact as he addressed the students by name during the session organized by the middle school for Black History Month. The representative is notable as the first Muslim elected to U.S. House of Representatives and first African American from Minnesota elected to the seat.

Monday’s conversation varied widely, touching on race relations to start, as Ellison explained how prejudice is based on stereotypes and how stereotyping is so prevalent because it is easy. It allows someone to say about a stranger, “I know all I need to know about them,” the congressman explained.

He went on to tell the students to not let their youth hold them back, that they have the same mental tools as adults. “An adult brain doesn’t actually work quicker or better than your brain,” he explained. Although ideas from a young brain may seem radical, do not be deterred, Ellison told the students. “I don’t ever want you to think that just because you’re looking at a problem in a way that other people have never looked at before, that somehow you’re wrong,” he said. “You may have just come up with the most creative way to solve the problem.” After all, adults don’t always know better “because their older, not all the time,” the 48-year old insisted. “You guys are creative and talented and the answer to today’s problems and tomorrow’s problems is in your mind.” After the pep-talk portion of the discussion, Ellison spoke on what many know him for best: his religion, and his experience taking office as the first Muslim in his position. For round table participant K.J Thompson, the topic was the of source Ellison’s most notable comment. On being the first Muslim in his position: “He didn’t even think it was a big deal,” Thompson said. “Why is everybody tripping that I’m a Muslim?” Ellison said, recalling his thought when he first took his seat in Congress. He said he later came to understand the buzz he generated due to sentiment regarding Muslims in a post 9-11 world. One student asked if he might ever seek a seat higher than Congress. “I’m not planning on it,” Ellison said, “but if the opportunity ever emerges, I might take it.” So he may gain more power, and that was Ellison’s underlying message. Power: These students have it. “What I said about believing as a young person that you have good things to contribute, embrace that. That’s serious.” Following the message, students, who had the weekend to prepare for the visit, said they were both impressed and nervous as Ellison walked though the Media Center doors, but settled down as the conversation began. “When he first walked in the room I just felt his boss-ness fill the room. I was kind of nervous,” said Thompson, “but then I’m just thinking in my head, he’s kind of short.” Thompson took Ellison’s message of empowerment to heart. He doesn’t know what exactly he wants to do when he grows up, but know one thing: “I want to be a boss.”

Caucus FROM PAGE 1 an enlivened Ron Paul contingent contributed to the jump in participants, according to Marston. But it was Santorum coming up big this year, thanks in large part to a block of seniors coming out to show their support for the candidate, Marston said, noting he encountered a number of them who had never caucused before. “A couple of them mentioned the last debate in Florida, said Marston, a Santorum supporter. “Santorum didn’t speak a lot but every time he spoke it was about the issues. Perhaps a clean-beaked Santorum swept in to steal a loosed worm from

the squabbling birds. “Stick to the issues. That’s what I kept hearing from the other people, Marston said. Caucuses also passed resolutions within their individual precincts to be passed along the district convention. The resolutions had not yet been compiled, but broadly supported, according to Marston, was the measure to require voter identification at the polls. Another popular sentiment, he said, was to remove some of the minutiae from the Republican platform, which is currently “16 pages long at 12-point font, he noted. At the Richfield caucus, which included Fort Snelling, 111 delegates were selected to represent their precincts at the district convention, although the process was not all that selective - anyone who wanted to be a delegate had was granted their wish. One of them was Harold Klein of

precinct 3, which is in the northwest corner of Richfield. The last time the 43-year-old single father of three caucused it was at a democratic gathering. That time he voted for President Barack Obama, the first time he had ever voted Democrat. Back in the Republican fold, Klein was looking to influence the outcome in favor of Paul. “I just want to make a difference, Klein said. While his favorite took a distant second place in the state, Paul took first in Klein’s precinct, getting 12 out of 29 votes. Santorum, Romney and Gingrich evenly split the remainder. Paul would have had more supporters from Richfield’s northwest pocket, but a common sentiment in Precinct 3 was a lack of confidence that the Texas lawmaker could actually make their votes count, and prevail in November. “I love Ron Paul, said one Precinct

3 caucusser. But the stay-at-home mother of three, wife of a hedge fund manager questioned the candidate’s electoral wherewithal. “We have to choose people that can win, she said. “I like what he has to say, but I don’t believe he’s electable. In the Precinct 3 gathering, each candidate received vocal support during the discussion preceding the poll, although Santorum received the least. Nevertheless, with Santorum prevailing in Minnesota, Missouri and Colorado Tuesday, Marston believes the candidate will stay alive at least until “Super Tuesday, when 10 states pick their favorites. So the conversation will continue. “Let’s talk about the issues, because people are concerned about the economy and not having jobs, Marston said. “Debate is good. There’s good ideas on both sides.

The back-and-forth continues. Paul would draw voters from both the left and the right, one argues. Daehlin warns that Paul would form his own faction once dispensed from the primary race and splinter the Republican Party, although there seems to be nothing they can do about that since voting him down would start that process. At this point, Daehlin is standing, spreading out his arms, pointing, a little red in the face. The vice chair decides the participants better vote before things get too feisty. The other three candidates share the remainder about evenly. The debate portion of the program is over. Now it is time to pick delegates and endorse resolutions for the official party platform. Simple is the new rich Boomers should spend more time sitting on the porch BY EMILY HEDGES – CONTRIBUTING WRITER When Ron Timm of Minnetonka gives seminars on how to live simply, he frequently refers to the concept of “empty porches.” He challenges his students to drive down Summit Avenue in St. Paul, or around Lake Minnetonka when it’s beautiful outside and see if anyone is

using their porch. “They’re never sitting out there because they are always working,” he said. “Boomers, especially, are finding that they’re working during the years they expected to be sitting on the porch.” Twenty-two years ago, Timm was one of those executives working long hours with an expensive home on the lake that he never had time to enjoy. That is, until the day he thought he was having a heart attack. Come to find out, he was okay, but the experience left its mark. “When I thought I had a heart attack I started thinking about what is important,” he said.

Kolbe Index helps boomers decide ‘what’s next’

also help a Boomer figure out ‘what’s your next career?’”

BY EMILY HEDGES – CONTRIBUTING WRITER If free to be myself, I would…that was the question that changed Cheryl Stepney’s life. When the 63-year-old Bloomington resident got her results back from the Kolbe Index full of verbs to finish that sentence, she realized that she would never relate to people around her quite the same way again. “I’m a lead, follow or get out of the way person,” said Stepney. “I’m a decision-maker who likes to put two and two together. I’m the one in the group who moves projects along, the one who knows how to get the deliverables done.” Helping clients like Stepney know themselves better is at the heart of why St. Louis Park-based Affiance Financial began offering the Kolbe Index last September. According to Financial Advisor Steve Lear, Kolbe isn’t about cognition, intelligence, personality, or values. “There are other types of tests for that. The Kolbe Index is about how people take action; if they were free to be themselves, how would they do something.” The 36-question assessment reveals the way people operate in four areas: Fact Finding (the way you gather information), Follow Thru (how you arrange and design your environment); Quick Start (the way you deal with risk); and Implementer (the way you handle space and tangibles). After taking the test, the experts at Affiance Financial walk the

(Photo by Mike Hanks - Sun Newspapers) client through results that are displayed on a four-color chart with numerical values plotting their location on a spectrum in each of the four areas. “It’s interesting to get scores back. Unlike an IQ test, there are no wrong answers. This is a test to understand yourself better,” said Stepney. What she learned has helped Stepney in the way she relates to clients as a technologist in the computer industry. She now understands how individuals want her to communicate with them. “I can tell now who needs high facts, low facts, and it’s made me more successful,” she said. “When you can interpret through observation how to understand and communicate with clients better, they think you’re a genius.” As Stepney looks at her own future, she sees how the Kolbe Index is key for Boomers trying to decide how to spend the rest of their careers and beyond.

“Boomers want to keep working. Maybe you retire from a job you didn’t like. Now through Kolbe, you can go find a job that fulfills you in your later years,” said Stepney. “It helped me discover what I want to do. I’m realizing I want to set up some charitable activities that make me more well-rounded and happy.” Lear counsels Boomers daily who are contemplating a longer working life for all sorts of reasons. “For Boomers, we can help if they need to work, or want to work for their health and sense of purpose. The biggest gift Kolbe gives is to tell you where you fit in. It can also help a Boomer figure out ‘what’s your next career?’” While Stepney isn’t looking to retire anytime soon, and believes many Boomers feel the same way, she realizes that many don’t have the choice whether or not to look for another career. “For Boomers, whether they call it right-siz-

ing or downsizing, many are being squeezed out. Or companies are using various methods to move to a younger workforce. Some of us Baby Boomers have to face facts, there’s going to be changes,” said Stepney. “That’s the benefit of Kolbe. It tells you what makes you tick, what is your mojo. So if you do make a transition, what are the aspects that are going to make you the happiest.” Finding what makes his clients happy is the challenge for Lear, and achieving what he believes is true success. “We define it as “freedom to be yourself,” and that is the essence of Kolbe. We need to switch our societal definition here. It’s not how many cars you have, or how big your house is, or the clothes you wear. It’s this: do you have the freedom to be yourself ? That’s what we’re after.” Affiance Financial will host a free workshop on the second floor of the Metropoint Tower located at 600 Hwy. 169 South on Feb. 23 at 7 p.m. Space is limited to 50 people. Anyone interested in attending should email penne.swenson@affiancefinancial.com.

Ron Timm of Minnetonka thought he was having a heart attack. That served as a wake-up call for him to pursue a new lifestyle that emphasizes simplicity.

From page 19

“When you’re on your death bed, no one is going to say, ‘I wish I’d spent another four or five hours every week at the office.’” From that moment on, he wanted to do something different with his life. He started by going back to graduate school, and ended up writing his doctoral dissertation on Exit Strategies from Corporate America Using Voluntary Simplicity Principals. Timm not only read a couple hundred contemporary books on the subject, but also relied on the writing of philosophers hundreds of years old. “Philosophers call it voluntary simplicity,” he said. “It’s about living below your means. It gives you time to enjoy the things that are meaningful.” Timm left his job and opened his own graphic arts business. After 15 years, he decided to close the doors

and pursue two passions, photography and teaching. Since then, he has helped support his family with his photographs, and teaching photography at the college, community education and through one-on-one instruction as a photo coach. He also wanted to spend his life helping others find peace of mind and a better quality of life through reducing expenses. His course, “Living Better on Less” is now offered in communities all over the metro area. “It’s inspirational to teach the course,” said Timm. “I hear lots of interesting stories from people who were about to retire and now can’t afford to, or who lost their jobs, or just decided they had to cut back.” Timm recalls a corporate attorney friend who decided to leave her job for greater peace of mind. “When she sold her house and bought a less

expensive one, the bank was suspicious because no one bought a less expensive house. But it permitted her to change her career and get into a different business that she was passionate about.” Another student, a 25year-old woman, already knew she didn’t want to be an undertaker for the rest of her life. She took Timm’s course to figure out how to transition into another line of work. Timm points out to his students all of the options that become possible in life if you reduce the amount you need to live on. “Maybe you work four days a week instead of five, change fields or it gives you more time to go back to school or maybe even retire.” While all ages regularly attend Timm’s seminars, it’s Boomers that come most often.

Simple ... From page 22 “Right now is a perfect storm for Baby Boomers, with jobs, home prices, the stock market and dwindling 401Ks such as they are,” he said. “Boomers are getting older and must start thinking about how to reduce their spending if they want to retire.” Timm points out to Boomers that after retirement they will still require 70-percent of pre-retirement income, which can be a problem for many. His seminar offers practical advice on how to reduce your monthly out-go, and each student receives his 20-page handout with tips on how to live below your means, from saving money on housing, food, entertainment and travel to ways

to get out of credit card debt. So whether the simple living strategies are voluntary or born of necessity, Timm believes they are the key to having a life that is, “outwardly simple and inwardly rich.” He no longer works in an office, and he no longer lives in a lake house. Instead, he and his wife live in a less expensive but lovely home in Minnetonka and rent out the downstairs to live for next to nothing. Hanging on his wall is one of his favorite photographs, two Adirondack chairs with a window box full of blossoms behind them. For Timm that picture embodies the philosophies he shares with the world: voluntary simplicity, live below your means, make time to sit out on the porch. Bauer, Nygaard head to state Nordic ski meet Spartan seniors secure state berths with high Section 3 finishes BY GREG KLEVEN – SUN NEWSPAPERS Jake Bauer and Sarah Nygaard will represent Richfield High School in the state Nordic ski meet Thursday, Feb. 17, at Giants Ridge Ski Area in Biwabik. Both Spartan skiers qualified for state with high finishes in the Section 3 Nordic meet Feb. 7 at Theodore Wirth Park. Bauer placed fourth in the boys pursuit competition. His combined time in the 5K classic and freestyle races was 30 minutes, 21.5 seconds. Nygaard was ninth in the girls pursuit competition. She completed the two 5K races in 37:23.9. “We knew Bauer had a shot to go to state,” said Richfield coach Steve Mills. “Once he realized he was in fourth place going into the afternoon freestyle race, he was ecstatic. “Bauer held on to fourth place in the freestyle race and avoided getting tangled into any clumps of skiers to slow him down. He has skied Theodore Wirth a lot, knows the course well and had a quick tempo on the hills. Bauer had the ability to stay on top of the snow.”

Nygaard was 17th after the morning classic race but came back in the freestyle (skate) race to clinch her state spot. “There were some doubts on how she could make up that much ground after the classic race,” said Mills. “But we gave her strategies to help her catch eight skiers ahead of her in the skate race. “Sarah is the first girl in Richfield Nordic history to go to state. She skied with tenacity and wasn’t going to be denied.” State boys and girls 5K freestyle races begin at 10 and 11 a.m. Thursday, followed by the 5K classic races at 1:30 and 2:30 p.m. In the Section 3 boys team competition, Richfield placed fifth with 302 points. St. Paul Central was first (367) in the 12-team field. Richfield’s Ben Nygaard finished 30th (33:51.8) and Nelson Soto Moreno was 31st (33:53.2). Jake Beaudet placed 37th (34:59.4) and Moses Mugwanja was 52nd (37:38.4). Nate Luttenegger and Zach Coughlin also competed for the Spartans. Petersen shatters Spartan swim record in backstroke Richfield standout wins twice in Hibbing Invitational BY GREG KLEVEN – SUN NEWSPAPERS Richfield’s Andy Petersen has been on a record-setting pace in recent boys swimming action. Petersen was a dominating force for the Spartans at the Hibbing (Feb. 4) and the Minneapolis Laker (Jan. 28) invitational meets. Petersen sparked the Spartans to a fourth-place finish in the Hibbing Invitational. Grand Rapids won the Hibbing meet with 356 points, followed by Simley (351), Bloomington Jefferson (341), Richfield (281), Hibbing (227), Virginia (227), Duluth (208), Superior, Wis. (153) and Bemidji (133).

Petersen broke a Richfield varsity school record by winning the 100-yard backstroke in 55.35 seconds. The previous record of 55.67 was set in 1991. “It was exciting to watch Andy take down an old record like that,” said Richfield coach Marc Hamren. “His 100 backstroke performance was one of the highlights of the meet.” Petersen also won the 50 freestyle (23.03). Teammates Matt Graham and Mohab Eid were fourth and fifth with times of 23.26 and 23.32. Richfield’s 400 freestyle relay team created excitement as well, winning with a pool-record time of 3 minutes, 20.03 seconds. Members of that relay were Eid, Matt Graham, Petersen and Duncan Pederson. Richfield’s first-place 200 medley relay consisted of Petersen, Max Hamilton, Pederson and Matt Graham. The Spartans’ time was a season-best 1:41.06. Pederson achieved a personal-best

time of 55.65 while placing third in the 100 butterfly. Max Hamilton was sixth in that event (1:00.31). Eid and Matt Graham finished second and third in the 100 freestyle with times of 50.09 and 51.52. Richfield’s seventh-place 200 freestyle relay members were Max Hamilton, Eid, Josh Graham and Ryder Klopp. In the 100 breaststroke, Max Hamilton was second (1:02.71) and Pederson placed fourth (1:05.31).

Spartans place fifth Richfield was fifth of seven teams in the Minneapolis Laker Invitational Jan. 28 at Minneapolis Southwest High School. Chaska was first (278), followed by Forest Lake (269), Southwest/Henry (264.5), St. Louis Park (188.5) and Richfield (136). South/Washburn/Roosevelt was sixth (129) and Armstrong placed seventh (126).

Peterson put on another winning show in this invitational. He won the 100 backstroke in 56.62 seconds. He also took first in the 200 individual medley (2:08.21). Eid was second in the 200 freestyle (1:52.26) and 500 freestyle (5:13.70). Richfield’s fourth-place 200 medley relay team consisted of Matt Graham, Petersen, Ken Mayo and Eid. The Spartans’ time was 1:52.26. Matt Graham won the 50 freestyle in 22.99. He also placed second in the 100 freestyle (50.17). Richfield finished third in the 200 freestyle relay (1:36.29). Members of that relay were Petersen, Matt Graham, Nate Libra and Eid. Richfield Middle School pool is the site of the Section 2A boys swimming meet. Swimming preliminaries begin at 6 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 23. Swimming finals are 1:30 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 25. Section 2A diving starts at 1:15 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 23.
