The Richfield School District will cut $875,500 from next school year’s budget, as unanimously approved by the Richfield School Board last week. Supt. Robert Slotterback explained the cuts in what is becoming a mantra: “State funding has been frozen again and our costs go up.” So in slimming down, the district will make an array of reductions that include a one-student increase in average class size that will save $270,000, and a $240,500 cut in supply spending. Expunged personnel positions include two media jobs worth a total of $91,500, a $31,500 custodial position and 12 assistant athletic coaching spots worth $44,000. Staff development spending will be reduced by $30,000. Prior to compiling a list of potential cuts, surveys were sent out so staff and

Mohamed, a Bloomington resident, quit her job in the field of corporate travel management for her new venture, hiring two Egyptian cooks to work the kitchen. While she is a rookie restaurateur, Mohamed had been thinking about the career change for some time. She and her husband, Ahmed, a native of Egypt, would routinely head to North Minneapolis to indulge in Middle Eastern cuisine, of which there is scant selection in the south metro, said the mother of three young children. They would go out of their way for the authentic stuff, but Mohamed isn’t looking to shock any palates. “I don’t want it to be too Middle Eastern or too Mediterranean, Mohamed said. “I want people to feel comfortable. It is not the only place serving Mediterranean food in the area, but the Mohameds are banking on a menu — including the gyros and kabobs, plus items like naan bread, falafel and the hummuslike eggplant spread called baba gannoush — that caters to American sensibilities while retaining notes of authenticity. The Mohameds knew the Champlin resident, a native of Alexandria, Egypt, from their days eating at a northeast Minneapolis Mediterranean restaurant where he once worked. The other Aida cook, Mahmoud Mohamed, is Ahmed’s brother and has been states-side for three years, arriving from Cairo. He lives in Richfield, six blocks away from the restaurant. The Mohameds hope the team can help Aida avoid the pitfalls so many other establishments encounter, during a time they admit may not be ideal for a restaurant opening. “We knew the economy wasn’t great, Mohamed said. “We just decided to go for it. The restaurant came together in what seemed like a flash. The Mohameds signed the lease in late December and almost completely gutted the inside of the old Taco Bell before opening two and a half months later. And if it hadn’t happened so fast, it might not have happened at all. Amy AIDA: TO PAGE 14 CMYK

lies and communities,” said Barnes, who has a doctorate in classical music and conducts the East Metro Symphony Orchestra in Woodbury. Barnes leaves March 14 for her trip, funded by a Barnes from the Minnesota State Arts Board, but has set a March 7 deadline for donations in order to allow time to make arrangements — she has yet to nail down every detail. “I must say there is a faith part of it,” she said. Barnes hopes to fill at least two large suitcases with musical instruments and accessories, and would use monetary donations to pay the checked baggage fees if she has to, but “it’s my hope we can get Delta to waive the (checked baggage) fees,” she said, adding that any monetary donations not going toward checking the bags will go straight to Sonidos de la Tierra. Barnes said she had collected monetary donations from six people, plus two oboes, a clarinet, a French horn.
BY ANDREW WIG – SUN NEWSPAPERS A Richfield woman wants to give the gift of music to children across Paraguay, and plans to bring it in a couple of suitcases. Classical musician Elizabeth Prielozny Barnes is preparing to head to the South American country to study Paraguayan folk music, but she has another mission, and she needs help. Barnes is seeking donations of woodwind instruments, particularly oboes, bassoons and French horns and their accessories. If things go well she and husband Jim will arrive in Paraguay loaded down with luggage full of the gifts, which she said are nearly impossible to obtain in the impoverished country. “It is a very appreciated custom when people come,” Barnes said, “to bring in their checked baggage whatever they can to share with people.” The instruments and supplies will go to Sonidos de la Tierra — or Sounds of the Earth — a Paraguayan organization dedicated to putting instruments in the hands of those who otherwise would not have access to such, which in Paraguay would be most of the popula-

Richfield split in redistricting Legislators, now in new districts, contemplate next move BY ANDREW WIG – SUN NEWSPAPERS Richfield has been split in two, according to the new Legislative district maps released last week by a special judicial redistricting panel. The re-draw is mandated every 10 years in response to population and demographic changes noted in the decennial census. While Richfield will see no changes on the Congressional level, still falling within District 5, currently represented by Keith Ellison, DFL, two new state Senate districts will comprise the city. District 63 will cover the northeastern portion, with a border snaking westward from Cedar Avenue, along Diagonal Boulevard to 73rd Street before circling around Wood Lake and meeting with Interstate 35W, shooting north to the Highway 62 border. The remainder of Richfield, approximately half of it, will become part of the new Senate District 50. It is not a happy breakup, according to DFL Sen. Ken Kelash, who for now, but not for long, represents state Senate District 63, which includes all of Richfield. For Kelash to continue representing much of his old District 63 constituency — which also included a portion of south Minneapolis and the northern third of Bloomington — he would have to move across the border into District 50, three blocks south from his home in Minneapolis. Were Kelash to stay put it would mean challenging Sen. Scott Dibble, DFL, for what will be the District 61 seat, an option Kelash has ruled out. Moving is not his ideal scenario, and Kelash hasn’t decided whether he will change his address, but the Richfield native has drawn at least one conclusion from the new lines. “I think Richfield is worse off,” said the senator, battling a cold Wednesday in addition to the shake-up. The new District 63 throws the northeast corner of the city in with a portion of southeast Minneapolis. With Richfield so-divided it will be subject to Minneapolis politics “to a certain extent,” he said. Kelash offered similar concern regarding the new District 50 portion
This graphic representation shows where the new districts 63 and 50 split across the city of Richfield. (Submitted graphic)
of the city. Richfield represents a decidedly minority slice of a constituency there that includes the eastern two-thirds of Bloomington. Kelash’s suggestion was not unanimous among Democrats, however. DFL House Minority Leader Paul Thissen, who under the old lines represented parts of Richfield and Minneapolis as the District 63A representative, downplayed the impact of a bisected Richfield. “I don’t think it changes the dynamic that much,” Thissen said, noting that Richfield had already been hooked onto parts of Minneapolis and Bloomington under the old lines anyway. Also, Richfield will actually have more state representatives, with two members each in the House and Senate. And much of the new District 50 may see no change in Senate representation after all. Kelash believes he would have a solid shot at that seat, should he move south. Having represented a large portion of the area since 2008, he credits name recognition.
“I would say I would have a decent chance,” he said. “I’m getting encouragement (to run) from a lot of Richfield and Bloomington folks.” While Kelash would have to move a few blocks to do so, Craig Marston, who chaired the old District 63 for the Republicans and ran unsuccessfully for the district’s Senate seat in 2010, found a more fortunate position in the new draw, but just barely.
Close shave helps Marston, he thinks He lives in the new District 50, just feet south of the 73rd Street cutoff line. Marston, too, was not a fan of a divided Richfield, saying, “I don’t like splitting cities,” but the redistricting may improve his chances should he again seek a Senate seat. “I think it got better,” he said, referring to the chances a Republican will represent a portion of Richfield. The old District 63 had more Democratic influence, encompassing all of Richfield, part of Minneapolis and northern Bloomington. That influence remains in the new
draw for the district, within which Marston said Republican organization is minimal. But compared to his old district, he believes, the new District 50 has gained in Republican constituency, one that no longer includes Minneapolis and stretches far south of Richfield along the Minnesota River, stopping just north of Savage, bordered on the west by Highway 100 and then France Avenue. “Once you go down toward the river it starts to become more conservative,” Marston said. But in general, Thissen said, the new map gives democrats a strong chance to regain control a majority Republican legislature. It provides “a very strong pathway for us to grab the majority for the democrats,” he said.
New House districts With the new lines, Richfield will lose the representation of Thissen, who will face no incumbent conflict in his new district, 61B, extending from Highway 62 over part of the Minneapolis chain of lakes. REDISTRICTING: TO NEXT PAGE

Redistricting FROM PREVIOUS PAGE But having represented Richfield since 2002, Thissen expressed sentimental regret in the new alignment. “I’m disappointed to be losing Richfield as part of my district,” he said. “It’s part of my district I feel very close to.” He added that his mother taught in the Richfield School District for a number of years. The new lines, however, are “fair” and “very appropriate,” Thissen concluded.
Changes are on the way for Richfield’s other House representative, as well. With the new borders, Linda Slocum would still represent part Richfield in District 63B, but will not compete for that seat against incumbent Jean Wagenius, DFL, who currently represents District 62B and also lives within the new 63B. Instead, Slocum announced she will move from her Richfield home into House District 50A, which represents a large portion of her constituency from her past six years of service. Teacher effectiveness must be part of lay-off process How teachers with tenure should be evaluated and laid off in a school system are hot topics at the Minnesota Legislature. Republicans, who are in the majority in both houses, seem to favor a measure that would use test scores and teacher effectiveness along with seniority in terminating teachers. Now, seniority (years of experience) is used as a major consideration in laying off teachers, or as is commonly known: last hired, first fired. Education Minnesota, a union of 70,000 teachers, responds that 40 percent of the school district contracts now enable administrators to use criteria along with seniority to terminate teachers. While teachers about to be dismissed are entitled to due process, it is false to say that principals do not have the power to get rid of bad teachers; they are reluctant to use it. We have favored making it harder for teachers to get a license, which they must renew

every five years. This idea, suggested by Minnesota Education Commissioner Dr. Brenda Cassellius apparently isn’t on the Republican legislators’ law-making agenda. By toughening licensure requirements, teachers would be more qualified to teach for another five years. Those who favor watering down the seniority process claim it will get rid of the “bad” teachers, which they say seniority protects. Once again there is no data that tells how many teachers are ineffective, only that there must be bad ones, because they can’t all be good. The law now requires the definition of an effective teacher by
which teachers must be measured. This is in addition to the demand that teachers must have a college degree, they have to survive three years of probation and be licensed regularly. All this emphasis on ineffective teachers overlooks the good record Minnesota education has compared to other states, with its higher college entrance exams and high graduation rates. Proponents of changing the seniority system claim that culling the bad teachers would narrow the educational achievement gap between minority and white students. It’s important to determine what the gap is and where it is. The achievement gap compares minority students to white students in urban poverty areas of Minneapolis, St. Paul and Duluth. Those who have studied the data say students who live in poverty do not do as well in school as kids living with families above the poverty line. The gap will only be signifi-
cantly narrowed when policies at the local, state and federal levels are able to lift urban families out of poverty enabling their kids to do better in schools. All that said, the public along with leading educators believe the time has come to change the law so that teacher effectiveness as well as seniority are considered when laying off teachers. The tenure law has served teachers and students well by recognizing that experienced teachers generally become better instructors and should be protected from arbitrarily being laid off. The time has come, however, when as in any profession, a teacher’s effectiveness along with the seniority should be considered in any lay-off decision. Tell me what I want to hear: Who am I to argue with a psychic? If you ever need an ego boost, go see a psychic. It was never something I really considered before, but there is a woman in Richfield who does these paintings that are supposed to sooth Alzheimer’s patients. In what she calls a metaphysical phenomenon, faces appear in her work, without her trying to put them there. There is supposed to be some sort of spiritual connection at work that I won’t get into yet; it’s a whole separate story I am working on. (Look for it soon.) Anyway, I went to a modest Richfield rambler to interview this woman in her chamber. Her name is Sheila Van Houten. As I sat at her semi-circular glass desk, surrounded by statues and crystals, she told me about her

painting work and other subjects, about the ghosts in her house, one of which swears she flipped open her MacBook one night and snapped a self portrait of with the computer’s web cam, a photo now emblazoned on one side of the postcards she uses to diagram the palm readings. She got out the card. I put out my right hand, and whoa, is my future bright! First off, my lifeline, the crease that arches across the middle of my palm, is plenty
long, traveling all the way across my thumb. “You might even crack 100,” she told me. But there’s a reason for that. Turns out, I’m a healer. Something about my pinky says so, and it is something the world needs, so I get to live a long time, Sheila said. And it doesn’t mean I necessarily have to become a brain surgeon or anything, she told me; I can just heal by touch if I want. Mere proximity works, too. If people don’t want me to touch them (understandable) I can just hover near them. In fact, I don’t even have to be near them, said Sheila’s associate, Scott Anderson, who is also supposed to be psychic and would later give me a tarot card reading. Scott said I could use vocal vibrations to heal because of the “nice, mel-
low voice type thing” I’ve got going on. Well, all right then. And I could have the chance to heal people all over the world, because in my 40s, Sheila said, I will travel extensively, possibly as a National Geographic type. There is a branch off my freakishly long lifeline that tells her that. All of this comes just from those two creases and my pinky; I’ve got four fingers and plenty of palm left for more fantastic news. “You’ve got the inventor’s knob,” Sheila gasped, “and it’s gigantic.” You see, we have mainstream thinkers, she told me as I fought a wide grin and resisted nodding, “and we have you. So you do not think like most people. You probWIG: TO NEXT PAGE

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Those supporting domestic partnership registry guilty of a sin To the editor: Mr. Heinzman, You may be all for this “domestic partner registry,” but think about this: God certainly is not. Do you really think that God is pleased with our country? We keep on legalizing sin. I, for one, do not want to face God on Judgement Day and say that I supported this after He says it is wrong and that it is a sin. And neither should you, unless of course you do not believe in God. Remember: you cannot be forgiven for a sin if you do not acknowledge that it is a
Wig FROM PREVIOUS PAGE ably already know that.” I don’t argue with her and besides, it takes all kinds, right? Scott then puts his weight into this ego massage as he refers to our earlier interview. “I don’t think that there was a thing that we brought up or threw at you that you didn’t on some level get, or relate to, or at least tie-in …” he keenly observed, adding praise for my refusal to balk at the ghost stories. Sheila didn’t say anything about my palm saying I am open-minded, but I’ll take that one, too, thank you very much. That ridiculous inventor’s knob is on the lower left side of my right hand, straight down from my healing pinky. Across the base of my hand is a strong verbal knob, pointing to my ability to convince and persuade others, which is why I was such a good janitorial supply salesman back in the day. I wasn’t, actually, but I’ll roll with it, especially the thing she said about me investing a lot of passion in what I do and digging beneath the surface. Sheila also dropped the “magnetic personality” bomb. Again, rolling. Up from that verbal hotspot, at the base of my ring finger, is a “full-fledged Mount of Apollo.” Of course, this is a good thing. Mount of Apollo is the arts and entertainment sector of the palm, and since mine is full-fledged, I pretty much rock at things like computer graphics, cartoons and other design work (Sheila said). Hoping the answer to the question would lend legitimacy to the righteously emboldening analysis, I asked, “Surely, some palms must give negative readings?” They told me they try to tip-toe and soft-
sin! Through you and others support of this “registry” you are enabling them and hence become just as guilty of an unrepentant sin. Please consider this and I thank you for reading what I have to say. John Gottschalk Richfield
Lack of neutrality in caucus coverage To the editor: As a Richfield native who has attended caucuses in Precinct 6 since 1968, I was pleased to learn about the discussion inside one Republican caucus on Feb. 7 (“Inside the caucus” Feb. 16).
en the blow in these cases and mentioned one time when they told a client a transatlantic flight would not go well, and it didn’t — there were like seven things that went bad during the flight, which landed safely. Since I didn’t want to ruin a good thing, I did not ask about my middle and index fingers and thumb, and the countless other wrinkles on my palm that did not elicit comment. In fact, the reading was not 100 percent positive, anyway. I have a dent in my heart line, signifying past heartbreak, but which one? I’m supposed to bounce back, though, thanks to a solid marriage line: soul mate, lifelong partnership, four kids. Sheila told me it would begin in my early 30s. I’m 29. (Window closing, ladies.) I don’t know anything about palm reading beyond this visit and I don’t know if Sheila and Scott are really psychics, because I’m not a psychic. They didn’t offer any observations where I was like, “How did you know that?” Scott did, however, make a hypothetical off-hand remark during our tarot card reading about an August wedding for my brother, who is actually getting married in May, so that was pretty good. I don’t know if the comment was some sort of psychic insight; he didn’t try to play it that way. I do know that Sheila and Scott seem like nice people, that Sheila charges $150 an hour for her services — which can be broken down to the quarter-hour — and that they both made me feel really good. I think seeing a psychic is like anything: We believe what we want to believe. And when the message is this good, why not buy it? Sheila asked if I would include her number: 612-866-1269. Her website is sheilaknows.com. Scott is at 612-865-2437 and holymanonline.com.
As a former instructor of journalism at the University of Minnesota, however, I was appalled by the blatant lack of neutrality in the Sun-Current’s coverage. Surely there were equally interesting issues discussed in DFL caucuses, even if the straw ballot for President [Barack] Obama was unanimous. The caucus I had attended drew 29 people, more than one-tenth of the turnout for all Republican caucuses combined. This means turnout was similarly strong for
both parties. It is a basic principle of fairness and the public trust that journalists cover all parties and all issues; the Sun-Current’s coverage amounted to a front-page ad for the Republican frontrunner in Minnesota, and praise for a single party. If the Sun-Current is incapable of covering political issues fairly, then its editors should step down. Ken Meter Richfield

ENGAGEMENT PAUL – PANTER Denny and Karen Paul of Eden Prairie are pleased to announce the engagement of their daughter, Becky, to Corey Panter of Coon Rapids. Becky is a graduate of Eden Prairie High School and Bethel University. She is employed at SPS Commerce in Minneapolis. Corey is employed at Arrow Cyrogenics in Blaine. Both are also currently interning with Substance Church in Fridley where they originally met. A March 2012 wedding at the McNamara Alumni Center is planned.
Aida FROM PAGE 2 Mohamed said she would have been more hesitant had the project developed slower. “I haven’t had time to think about it,” she said And she would rather ignore one commonly cited statistic, that 40 percent of new restaurants fail in their first year. One of her suppliers mentioned the number, and “I didn’t even want to think
about it,” Amy Mohamed said. “I just said, ‘Don’t even say it.’” But at least so far, “people have been great,” she reported. “They’ve stopped in and said, ‘We’re so glad to have another food choice in the area.’” One of them was Barb Ragan, who lives four blocks away and visited Aida for the first time earlier this week. “I noticed right away that it is Mediterranean. I like that kind of food,” she said. Plus, she opined, “it sure is better than Taco Bell.” CMYK

Serial burglary suspect charged BY ANDREW WIG – SUN NEWSPAPERS A Richfield man suspected in a string of residential burglaries was arrested Feb. 6. Stewart E. Peshek, who is suspected in burglaries in Chaska, Deephaven, Edina, Lakeville, Eden Prairie and Carver County, was charged Feb. 8 with seconddegree burglary after officers observed him enter an Eden Prairie home, later finding the 43-year-old in possession of a number of items confirmed stolen, according to a criminal complaint filed in Hennepin County District Court. The day of the arrest officers watched the suspect enter a Mercury Mountaineer and drive to a residence on Antlers Ridge in Eden Prairie, according to the complaint. They watched him park the vehicle in the home’s driveway, and leave the vehicle. Shortly thereafter, the complaint states, the home’s garage door opened and the suspect drove the vehicle into the stall, departing several minutes later. Officers then found the home’s rear door to be forced open and that several wires had been cut on the building’s rear exterior. When they stopped Peshek’s vehicle, police found items the homeowner reported missing, including a flat screen television, laptop computers and assorted pieces of jewelry, according to the complaint. Peshek admitted to the burglary, the complaint says. Later the day of the bust, authorities used a warrant to search Peshek’s residence on the 500 block of East 66th Street, finding items including more than 40 watches, various jewelry, cameras cell phones, laptop computers, purses and wallets. They also located several sterling knives, two candelabras, a silver chalice with Hebrew inscriptions and a 1985 Kirby Puckett rookie card. Police also located drug paraphernalia and a bag containing an unidentified white substance, according to court documents. Peshek was being held on $150,000 bond, with his next court appearance scheduled for Mar. 22. The defendant faces a maximum penalty of a $20,000 fine and 10 years in prison.

Cuts FROM PAGE 1 administration could conduct a costbenefit analysis in which “we went through everything you could think of,” Slotterback said. A popular staff suggestion was to target certain athletics programs, but there is less money to be saved in athletics than many would think, he reported. The most viable candidate to be cut, for instance, was the alpine ski program, which would save $4,000, barely a dent.

“When it came down to it,” Slotterback said, “we wanted to keep as many options open for the kids as we could.” After the reductions take effect this fall the district expects a 2.5 percent fund balance, a cushion boardmember Todd Nollenberger sees as dangerously thin. “I would like to share the fact that that makes me uncomfortable,” he noted, before voting to approve the $875,500 in cuts. The board declined an option of expanding the savings to $1.1 million by increasing class sizes by two instead of one.

Referendum: Let’s try this again Following the approval of the cuts, the school board voted unanimously to authorize administration to make preparations in a levy renewal. The $301.40-perstudent levy is one of two current district levies. If it is not renewed the district expects to require an additional $1.5 million expenditure reduction for the 2013-2014 school year. The board is to decide by summer exactly how much to request for a fall referendum. Considering last fall’s referendum fail-

ure, the stakes appear to be high. “I don’t use the language of ‘catastrophe’ in light,” Boardmember John Easterwood said, “but not to vote not to renew the levy would be dramatic.” At least enrollment figures appear positive, Slotterback said, noting “pretty good” kindergarten enrollment numbers and an influx of more than 300 students in the last three years, with an increase of 30 expected next year. But herein lies a catch-22, he explained. It takes human capital to attract students, Slotterback said, and “there comes a time when you have fewer people that it becomes very hard to do.”

Music FROM PAGE 3 Bulgaria, where last year she made a trip similar to the one she is planning. Getting to know folk musicians and studying their craft has not only satisfied Barnes’s curiosity, but has provided a kind of academic enlightenment. “Every time I worked with any of these musicians, light bulbs would go off in my head about things I was learning about the classical music tradition that I thought I knew so well,” she said. “To understand how classical music works … we really owe it to ourselves to learn about the
folk music on which it is based.” And when those worlds collide, they cause “kind of a mind warp,” Barnes said. “It’s something out of this world.” She is reveling in the opportunity to bring new sounds to the middle of South America. “I think it’s pretty cool,” she said. “It isn’t often we get this idea to do something that is just 100 percent good.” Barnes’s East Metro Symphony has its next concert, one based on the Indonesian folk tradition, March 11 at East Ridge High School, at 4200 Pioneer Dr., Woodbury. “It was a very successful section meet for our swimmers,” said Richfield head coach Marc Hamren. “We are still tapering but had many good times and finishes. “We were very pleased to accept the runner-up team trophy. We haven’t done that in many seasons. “We have a good opportunity to do better than our fifth-place finish at state last year.” The Richfield coach listed St. Thomas Academy and Breck/Blake as the state title favorites. Richfield’s 200-yard medley relay team won a gold medal in the section meet with a time of 1 minute, 51.54 seconds. Members of that winning relay were Andy Petersen, Max Hamilton, Duncan Pederson and Ryder Klopp. Richfield was third in the 400 freestyle relay with a state-qualifying time of 3:22.90. Relay members were Mohab Eid, Matt Graham, Klopp and Pederson. The Spartans were ninth in the 200
freestyle relay with a state-qualifying effort of 1:31.19. That relay consisted of Petersen, Max Hamilton, Eid and Matt Graham. Max Hamilton was section champion in the 100 breaststroke (1:02.25). Petersen finished third in that event (1:03.16). Matt Graham placed second in the 50 freestyle (22.50). Pederson was second in the 100 butterfly (54.47). In the 100 freestyle, Eid finished fifth (49.69) and Matt Graham was sixth (49.74). Eid placed third in the 200 freestyle (1:49.82). Three Richfield swimmers placed in the 200 IM. Pederson was third (2:01.96) followed by Petersen in fourth place (2:02.96). Max Hamilton was eighth (2:08.49). Senior Ken Mayo didn’t qualify for state but drew praise from his coach. “Ken achieved a 16-second drop with a time of 5:29.61 in the 500 freestyle prelims,” said Hamren. “He finished eighth in the finals with a time of 5:33.25.”

Tyler Martinez, Tim Harris and Sam Schrick scored one goal each. Dhein, Schrick and Martinez had two assists each. Kevin Krohn and Jack Stellon picked up one assist apiece. Spartan goalie John Meyer preserved the win by making 40 saves. In the next playoff game, Richfield discovered why Breck is favored to win another state championship. “Breck has an unbelievable team,” said coach Christ. “I can’t see a weakness in its lineup. “Breck had 10 different players score goals against us and had too much depth for us.” Breck scored four times in the first and third periods. The Mustangs had six goals in the second period. Martinez scored the Spartans’ lone goal in the first period. Schrick was credited with an assist. Meyer made 37 saves. Richfield finished 9-17-1 overall. The Spartans were 1-9 in the Classic Suburban Conference.
Richfield defeats Providence Academy before losing to top-seeded Breck BY GREG KLEVEN – SUN NEWSPAPERS Richfield received a dubious honor by winning its Section 2A first-round boys hockey playoff game. The Spartans were rewarded with a matchup against defending state champion Breck. The Spartans, an eighth seed, defeated ninth-seeded Providence Academy 5-2 in first-round action Feb. 22 at Parade Ice Garden. But then Richfield encountered topseeded Breck and lost 14-1 in the quarterfinals Feb. 24 at Parade. “We played a great all-around game in our win over Providence Academy,” said Richfield coach John Christ. “We had four of our five seniors score goals. “Our other senior, Ryan Erickson, missed the section playoffs because of mono. But we played well defensively with him out of the lineup. “We held Providence Academy’s Ryan Tapani scoreless. He scored four
