New ‘discovery art’ helps those with Alzheimer’s Richfield woman believes supernatural phenomenon is at work BY ANDREW WIG – SUN NEWSPAPERS Residents at Sunrise Senior Living in Minnetonka are seeing things. They see birds, flowers, dancers, men grooming their facial hair. The visions have been appearing for the past several months, on the third floor of the assisted living community, in what is called the Reminiscence Neighborhood, a place set up to comfort for those with Alzheimer’s disease. Every Tuesday afternoon the residents gather around the dining room table in the homey space and stare at glossy 8½-by-11-inch cards — colorful, splashy abstract prints painted by a Richfield resident who believes she is channeling something from a spiritual realm, in a kind of Alzheimer’s therapy that by all accounts is unprecedented. After about five months of the weekly exercise, of gazing into the work of Sheila Van Houten, the results from inside Sunrise’s memory care communi-

ty are phenomenal, staff there say. Normally taciturn residents are brought to life when guided through an interpretation of Van Houten’s work, they report. The artist calls it “discovery art,” consisting of seemingly random brush strokes and splotches that seem to come to life before the right kind of eyes. Bloomington resident Dan Dolliff ’s 80-year-old mother, Mary, is in the advanced stages of Alzheimer’s. One thing that holds her attention are reruns of “The Lawrence Welk Show.” It was on one day as Mary sat on the third floor at the Sunrise community. “Ordinarily she would have been glued to the music on TV,” Dolliff said. But then the art came out. “It was like somebody switched the set off and there was no other competition. It was just the cards,” Dolliff said. “That was an eyeopener for me.” Now, his mother, instead of sitting passive, was subject to “100 percent engagement” in what lay before her, tracing shapes and strokes with her fingers, Dolliff said.

Women with Low Thyroid Many people live their lives suffering from low thyroid symptoms. This is especially true for females. Thyroid hormones control all your metabolism, and when thyroid hormones are low they cause all the cells in your body and mind to slow down. These symptoms include fatigue, weight gain, mood swings, sweet cravings, depression, sluggish thinking, thinning hair or hair loss, and cold hands and feet. For some people digestive problems like constipation and acid indigestion may signal low thyroid. Even when taking thyroid medication, many people continue to suffer from the symptoms of having low thyroid. Some people are even told their lab tests are normal but still continue to endure the symptoms of low thyroid. However, there can be a solution for symptoms from low thyroid! Dr. Phil Gilman DC FMA FASBE, a published thyroid researcher and chiropractor, is holding a seminar to discuss low thyroid symptoms. His research shows that while blood tests are valuable in evaluating thyroid dysfunction, often the basic tests are inadequate in finding the underlying causes of low thyroid. For example Dr. Gilman’s published research showed that liver func-

tion affects low thyroid. This research also showed that low thyroid persons have a observable posture and testable muscle weakness. There are six patterns of thyroid dysfunction and only one of them responds well to thyroid medication. That is why so many have been disappointed in their results. During the seminar Dr. Gilman will reveal the number one cause of low thyroid in the United States, why many women taking replacement hormones won’t get better, six patterns to thyroid problems, and why doctor’s don’t run complete thyroid tests. He will also discuss the one food that is often involved in low thyroid and how to test for it. In addition to exposing these truths about thyroid treatment, Dr. Gilman will also discuss natural solutions to help thyroid problems. Due to the high demand and sensitivity of this information, seating for Dr. Gilman’s private thyroid seminar is limited. It will be held on Tuesday, March 27th at 6:00 PM at the Southtown Office Park Conference Room, 8120 Penn Ave So., Bloomington. Please call 651-681-8199 to reserve a seat today!

Richfield roads may lose a lane Public works outlines findings from pilot project BY ANDREW WIG – SUN NEWSPAPERS Some of Richfield’s main roads may be dramatically transformed in the coming years, with the strong possibility that some of the city’s four-lane thoroughfares may lose a lane. “It’s a drive to give the city a whole new look, said Richfield Public Works Director Mike Eastling, addressing the community group, Penn Central, last Thursday. Portland, Nicollet, Penn avenues are among the candidates for three-lanes. The city has been studying the possibility of three-lane thoroughfares since October, 2010, when the public works department followed a mill-and-overlay of Portland Avenue with a pilot project that redrew traffic lines between East 68th Street and East 74th Street. Public works staff on March 13 presented what the department has found so far from what is called the Portland Avenue Land Configuration Pilot Project. Three-lane roads, where traffic levels allow, are supposed to increase safety in a number of ways, and have been

a recent trend in transportation planning, according to Jeff Pearson, transportation engineer for Richfield. Chief among purported benefits, three-lane roads, with the middle lane reserved for left-hand turns, reduce blind the spots on four-lane streets that are created when two vehicles wait for left turns at the same intersection, Pearson said. Three-lane roads are also said to reduce speeding. While studies show average speeds on such roads decrease only by one or two miles per hour, those with the most leaden feet — the outliers in the speed spectrum — are forced to ease up, stuck behind slower traffic. Additionally, three-lane roads also allow for wider shoulders, making more room for bicyclists. Following the repainting of the lines in October 2010, Richfield polled residents near Portland Avenue twice with online surveys — after six months, and after 12 months — receiving varying feedback on the new configuration. After the three-lane section was in place for one year, 63 percent of those living on it preferred the three-lane section to four lanes. But of those living one to two blocks away from Portland Avenue, 48 percent favored three lanes. Seventy-five residents responded the questionnaire at the 1year mark. More residents took the survey that

measured opinion after six months, with 260 responding. Among those living on Portland Avenue, 54 percent commented positively on the three-lane section, while 39 percent responded negatively. Respondents in general said the pedestrian experience improved, with 29 percent saying it was “good or better than with the four-lane configuration, while 39 percent provided such a rating for three lanes. Biking got better, too, they said, with 14 percent of respondents ranking the three-lane biking experience favorably, compared to the 32 percent who sorated the four-lane experience. However, the percentage of respondents identifying driving difficulties actually increased in the 6-month survey — from 25 percent to 41 percent. These complaints were “little things in the grand scheme of things, Pearson told the city council last week. “They identify [the issues] as difficulties but they’re not necessarily crippling to an infrastructure. Pearson later attributed the report-

ed difficulties to a phenomenon he has come to expect when road changes occur. “It’s like any time you try to improve the road. It’s an improvement for the majority but there are going to be people that are affected negatively, he said in an interview. While sentiment in the public works department favors the three-lane conversions for qualifying roads in Richfield, any final decision is still a ways off. “We probably will continue to leave [the Portland Avenue pilot project] as a three-lane section, and will continue to get feedback on that. The Minnesota Department of Transportation has $18 million slated for roadwork in Richfield, most likely to be used in 2015 or 2016, and lane reductions could coincide with that work, Eastling said. Councilmember Fred Wroge expressed hesitance regarding the three-lane configuration at last week’s session, calling for more in-depth study while noting the relatively small sample size of respondents during the Portland Avenue pilot program.

PUBLIC SAFETY Police Reports Richfield police For March 8-11, the Richfield Police Department answered the following calls: March 8–An unknown suspect stole a 43-inch television worth $500 from a residence at 6938 16th Ave. S., a victim reported at 5:37 p.m. March 9–A catalytic converter was reported stolen at 7:07 a.m. from a van belonging to the Minnesota School of Business. Speak up for county library funding Unless advocates make some noise, dollars will continue to be cut At a time when more people than ever are using their community libraries, the funding gradually is being reduced. A good library is essential in a community now more than ever when people cannot afford to buy books and more people are using its computers, downloading E-books and checking out audio materials. At this time, advocates of local libraries need to protest some of these reductions during a time when services are most needed. Counties are responsible for providing a library system. Libraries get some revenue from the state while most of it comes from taxpayers in each county through special and general property tax levies. Hennepin and Ramsey County and its suburban libraries, bolstered by supportive county commissioners, are weathering the reductions better than most. Despite a $2.5 million reduction this year for the Hennepin County library, neither hours nor staff were cut. The director decided to buy fewer materials. The annual total budget for 2012 is $69.9 million. Thanks to some money from the Target ballpark sales tax revenue, worked out by the county board of commissioners, Hennepin opened some libraries on Sunday and added hours to the Central Library. They are, however, expecting revenues to be tight for a

while. Hennepin library users checked out 18.3 million items in the 41 libraries last year. In Ramsey County where there are separate tax levies for St. Paul and its suburban libraries, hours have not been reduced and a reduction of $100,000 has resulted in a loss of two staff and less for the collection. The collection revenues have been hit the hardest dropping from $1.3 million in 2003 to $850,000 in 2012, Revenue to buy materials for the libraries has gone down from $1.3 million in 2003 to 850,000 in 2012. Fortunately, Ramsey and other libraries purchase materials through the Metro Library Service Agency (MELSA) at a lower price. Last year, the Ramsey County system circulated 4,317,000 materials and had 1.8 million visitors. The Dakota County Library system expects to circulate 5 million materials this year. No hours have been reduced and most of the nine libraries are open Sunday. Last year the county system circulated 4.9 million materials through its nine-library system. This year’s total budget from all sources is $11,691,000. Over the last few years, mostly through attrition and not filling positions the number

Parents question teachers and journalists BY JOE NATHAN – GUEST COLUMNIST

In a story titled “Ralph’s Shoe Service is back in business” appearing on page 1 of the March 22 edition of the Sun-Current, a misspelling resulted in a word, inappropriate for a community publication, making its way into our pages. The Sun-Current regrets the error.

of fulltime equivalents has dropped from a high of 159 to 136. The counties’ revenues are suffering because tax capacity is going down due to all the foreclosures and shrinking commercial tax base. State legislators have cut local government aid and are requiring counties to do more with less and mandating more expenses with no extra money. The state auditor reports that cities and counties in the state have cut public library operating budgets and capital outlay by 42 percent between 2005 and 2009. Meanwhile, more people than ever are using libraries. More students are going to the library, because school districts are shortchanging their media centers, once called libraries. Home-schooled children are using the libraries more. Senior citizens are attending computer classes so they can use the library’s computers. Of course, the economy and particularly reductions in local government aid from the state to the counties partly are to blame for the underfunding and reduction in services. Advocates of community libraries need to speak up particularly to legislators about this slow erosion of library hours and services unless policy makers hear protests from users, funding for libraries will continue to be reduced.

Two frustrated questions at a recent Stillwater “Conversation in the St. Croix Valley” community meeting mirrored each other. One came from a parent of a teacher. The other came from a senior citizen, also a parent. Together, they help illustrate two passionate, opposite polls in our national debate about improving schools. One person identified her-

self as the mother of a teacher working with special needs students. She asked, “What can be done about the constant attack in the news media on teachers? It’s very demoralizing.” Last week I mentioned a national poll published by Met Life Insurance showing that teacher job satisfaction has dropped 18 points since 2008, to the lowest level in more than 20 years. Some teachers write to me and affirm what this poll found … many teachers feel

under attack. Yes, there is criticism. But any fair description of how newspapers and television depict teachers would find a variety of stories, not just “a constant attack.” Journalists also describe outstanding work that students and teachers are doing. There is coverage of award-winning teachers. It’s not all negative. NATHAN: TO NEXT PAGE

Nathan FROM PREVIOUS PAGE There is a big disconnect between what some educators and many journalists see as the responsibility of the news media. Over the last 40 years, I’ve learned that some educators think the job of the news media is to promote local schools. Many journalists quote a Chicago writer named Finley Peter Dunne. He believed newspapers “comfort the afflicted and afflict the comfortable.” While I understand some educators’ frustration with criticism sometimes found in a paper, I think that IS part of what journalists should be doing. The other side is that journalists should, and often do, report on progress and accomplishments. But there is not room or time to cover every event, every potentially interesting story. This brings us to the second speaker at the Stillwater meeting. He asked what could be done about the constant teacher union opposition to needed reforms. I responded that I think, again, the picture is more complicated. Some unions and their leaders have strongly supported changes that produced progress. I’ve written before about the successful effort in Cincinnati (district) public schools to close graduation gaps

between white and African American students, and students from low and middle income families. The Cincinnati Federation of Teachers was a strong supporter of these efforts. Closer to home, I know of unions that have recommended laws, allowing, for example, site-governed public schools, new approaches to teacher training that make better use of the most effective K12 teachers in our schools, and more support for high quality early childhood programs. But statewide teacher unions and some local unions in Minnesota also have opposed programs like Post Secondary Option, open enrollment and chartered public schools. In both instances – coverage of teachers and impact of teacher unions, I think the picture is more mixed than sometimes described. What’s best for students? Recognizing we won’t always agree, I think students gain and schools improve when we acknowledge good work that is being done, along with mistakes that have made and problems that need attention. County courts in Edina to remain open, for now County board approves interim security plan for suburban courtrooms BY MIKE HANKS – SUN NEWSPAPERS The future of Hennepin County’s Edina courtrooms remained uncertain as the Hennepin County Board narrowly voted in favor of temporary weapons screening measures for the building. The 4-3 vote by the board at its March 13 meeting will result in the implementation of temporary weapons screening for the three outlying courtrooms in Hennepin County, with a permanent solution for courtroom safety to be determined after an administrative study of security needs. The original proposal to implement interim procedures included closing the Southdale courts by Sept. 1, a move representatives of the affected cities oppose. The board’s deliberation centered around the urgency to implement temporary screening measures at the Brooklyn Center, Edina and Minnetonka courts. The majority – Jan Callison, Gail Dorfman, Jeff Johnson and Randy Johnson – wanted to move forward with security measures now, while the dissenters wanted direction as to long-term solutions before committing to expenditures for temporary measures. Commissioner Peter McLaughlin called the proposal “an open checkbook resolution with security as the goal.” Noting that the proposal did not reference cost effectiveness of the temporary measures, McLaughlin pointed out “other public safety priorities in this county.” Fiscal concern for taxpayer dollars “goes out the window when this topic comes up,” he added. McLaughlin also expressed concern that the county isn’t optimizing its courtroom capacity at the Hennepin County Government Center in Minneapolis, where weapons screening occurs. Board Chairman Mike Opat said that the results of a security study should be complete before the screening measures are added at the suburban courts, arguing that the county will study its way to justifying weapons screening, and that once the measures are in place, nobody

will argue for abandoning the procedures. Callison, whose district includes Edina, argued that the county always looks to be cost effective in doing its business, and defended the move toward implementing interim screening measures at buildings where high stress situations occur. “This is about probabilities, not about certainties,” she said. Dorfman recalled a 2003 shooting at the government center that prompted weapons screening for the facility in arguing for screening at suburban courts, which handle misdemeanor issues including traffic issues and some domestic violence cases. “There’s a legitimate security issue that needs to be addressed,” she said. The Hennepin County Sheriff ’s Office provides security for 96 county courtrooms in eight facilities. More than 3,400 weapons, from pocketknives to firearms, were confiscated at the government center in 2011, according to Sheriff Rich Stanek. There were 15 significant courthouse events at the suburban sites in 2011 that necessitated taking a person into custody, he added, noting that although some events may not appear to be significant, they may be for the person affected by the incident. “Weapons screening in all of our courthouses is needed,” he told the board. Bloomington City Attorney Sandra Johnson told the board that if the Edina courtrooms are to be closed, it should be after the security study of suburban courts, allowing cities to plan and budget for the increased time and expenditures associated with moving court proceedings from Edina to downtown Minneapolis or one of the other suburban divisions. Johnson was not opposed to a vote by the board on temporary weapons screening, but had previously disagreed with the need for increased security at the Southdale courts. “They are not logically or functionally intertwined,” she said. The administrative security analysis is due to the board by Nov. 1. Temporary security measures proposed for the Brooklyn Center and Minnetonka courts call for pass-through metal detection devices while metal detection wanding is planned in Edina. More than $600,000 in equipment and staffing was approved for the security plan.

A two-seated trip for Richfield native dik Bolger to be reunited with vehicle he painted in wilder days BY ANDREW WIG – SUN NEWSPAPERS A Richfield native is in for a flashback this spring, when the 1961 Citroën, which he painted in a psychedelically inspired fashion more than 40 years ago, makes a return trip to Minnesota. The original painter of the tiny twoseater, dik Bolger — who spells his first name in all lower-case — came forward in February after seeing a story published in the Star Tribune. It detailed suburban Detroit resident Mike Mullen’s quest to find the artist responsible for the splashy paint job that graces the vehicle he purchased last summer, when he fell in love with the piece of work. The Richfield Sun-Current originally published a story about the vehicle Jan. 2, but Mullen later contacted the Star Tribune to broaden his search. It worked, and Mullen will reunite the Citroën with the one who imbued it with its colorful, whimsical spirit, during northeast Minneapolis’ Art-a-Whirl festival, the weekend of May 18-20. Bolger, a Richfield native but now a St. Paul resident, recalls painting the car in 1971 or 1972 with his older brother, now deceased, at their grandfather’s home near Lake of the Isles in

inconspicuous in that car,” he said. “If you drove down the road or parked in a parking lot, people would just surround it.” He didn’t mind the attention. “At that

stage in my life it was a lot of fun, because people enjoyed it. It made people happy,” he remembers. But mechanically, the two-cylinder Citroën was too much trouble, and in 1975 Bolger sold it to Terrance Dickinson, who fixed it up. Dickinson, then a devotee of French automobiles, couldn’t reconcile with the paint job, however, and sold the Citroën to a car collector from Highland Park. The buyer, Paul Hansen, held onto the vehicle for years, and took it with him when he moved to Michigan in the late 1990s. Then last summer, Mullen was inspecting a foreclosed home in Detroit as part of his job as a court officer. There, he found the vehicle in a basement garage, which Hansen had rented to store his car collection. Thanks to the discovery, the life of the little Citroën will soon come full circle. Bolger, the owner of a national printing company based in Minneapolis, curtailed his hippie leanings as he became a businessman and raised a family. But standing out in that fever-dreamon-wheels, “at that time, was a lot of fun, because people enjoyed it and it made people happy,” he said. “And obviously it’s still making people happy. It’s a happy car and it’s a happy car to drive, too.” Bolger said he wouldn’t get emotional during the May reunion, though. After all, he said, “it’s a car.”

New club takes flight, takes refuge, in Richfield gym Metro Flyers take over Central School gym, have grander plans BY ANDREW WIG – SUN NEWSPAPERS Every Wednesday evening, basketballs and dodge balls are replaced by flying pieces of foam inside the Richfield Central School gym, home to the state’s newest RC flying club. The Metro Flyers have rented out the space since December, taking refuge from the winter — and those who see the hobbyists as a nuisance — as they hone their flight skills. Central School is one of the dwindling number of places they can do so, said club co-founder Bill Jennings of Credit River Township. “The perception is that we bring trouble with us,” the 73-year-old retired computer-industry executive said. “It’s hard to establish a flying field because folks have a preconceived notion of danger and noise.” The members of the RC Flyers all belong to at least one other club, so they

have some options, including other places they can fly indoors. Jennings, however, decided to form the group after another club he is in got kicked off University of Minnesota-owned land near Rosemount, when the U decided to build a wind turbine on the field the club was leasing. So considering that, and the fact that winter hinders outdoor flying, the Metro Flyers have taken to a gym the size of a single basketball court, a space Jennings learned about as an instructor of computer classes for seniors there. The club is thinking beyond the confines of the gym though — of establishing an outdoor space where they can soar unencumbered and unharassed. Jennings envisions leasing a sod field south of the metro or maybe even a portion of land on someone’s farm, although he knows corn stalks can really tear up a wayward RC plane. So can gym walls, which for now will have to make up the Metro Flyers’ home. Two weeks ago, “we went through 17 props about,” said charter member Rick Leiviska of Apple Valley. RC FLYERS: TO PAGE 17

News for seniors focusing on housing issues

H.O.M.E. SWEET HOME

By Emily Hedges Tim Morin, program coordinator for the Household and Outside Maintenance for the Elderly (H.O.M.E.) program for Senior Community Services, loves working with seniors. Before he came to H.O.M.E, the Hopkins resident worked with the organization Loaves and Fishes, delivering free meals to eight sites. Through this experience, he

transitioned into the H.O.M.E. program, a move that he is grateful for. Morin always had the desire to help people. “I have found great joy in being able to make people’s lives easier,” he said. “I like working with people, providing an honest service people can trust. So many businesses are trying to rip people off. H.O.M.E. has been around the better part of 60 years. The agency speaks for itself.” The mission of H.O.M.E. is to help peo-

ple remain independent in their homes by providing low cost and free services for people 60 and over in 15 suburban communities. Services offered include interior and exterior painting, minor home repairs, installation of safety bars, house cleaning, laundry, errands, grocery shopping, snow shoveling, lawn moving, leaf raking and window washing. Every spring and fall, H.O.M.E. volunteers put in thousands of hours in communitywide yard cleanups. Work includes raking, window washing, and garage sweeping.

Tom Morin, program coordinator, H.O.M.E. H.O.M.E/From previous Looking at the last census, Morin and others are anticipating a huge increase in the senior population in next decade. “There are expected to be more seniors than school aged children,” he said. “Plus, a lot more people are aging in place.” While no one is turned down because of an inability pay, H.O.M.E. does charge for some of its services. “What we charge barely covers the cost we pay to workers,” he said. “People are asked to pay a tenth of what a for-profit would charge.” Administration costs for the program are subsidized through funding from community development block grants, United Way, the Metropolitan Area Agency on Aging, and private donations. In 2011, H.O.M.E. served 1,064 households in surburban Hennepin County. Morin estimates that volunteers turned in around 6,000 hours of service. “We are just honored to be able to work with seniors in our community. They provide valuable resources to us,” he said. Morin personally visits each senior who signs up with H.O.M.E. to learn more about what they need to keep them independent. “I’m honored to work in this business. All day long, I hear personal stories. If we can do something to help, we’ve succeeded.” The H.O.M.E. program is a homemak-

er and maintenance program that is designed to assist the elderly. The goal is to assist those who are age 60 and older, or those with disabilities in order to allow them to remain in their homes. Services include: house cleaning, food preparation, grocery shopping, window washing, lawn care, and other maintenance and homemaker services. For more information on H.O.M.E. South serving the communities of Bloomington, Eden Prairie, Edina, Richfield and St. Louis Park, call (952) 888-5530. For H.O.M.E. Program is a part of Senior Community Services (SCS). Since its establishment in 1950, SCS has worked to meet the needs of seniors and caregivers. SCS offers services, including professional care coordination, caregiver support groups, Eldercare Partners caregiver coaching and counseling, CareNextion caregiver websites, Medicare and health insurance counseling, homemaking, home maintenance and chore services, meals on wheels and programming at six senior centers. Housing a lurking issue for many seniors By Emily Hedges Edina resident Ron Anderson believes you could write a book about all that most seniors don’t know about their available housing options. So he’s decided to write it. “It can be very difficult to examine resources with no working knowledge of what the system provides. Most people can’t tell the difference between Medicare and Medicaid or what their options are,” he said. “That’s the challenge for seniors and their families, to understand their situation.” As a member of a family that has worked in senior housing for two generations, and with his current involvement in two independent living facilities, Woodbridge Cooperative of New Hope and Chardon Court, he is in a unique position to write the guide he personally needed not too long ago. While he and his family were considering placement of his mother, a Missouri resident, in an assisted living facility, she had a fall in her home that forced the issue. “Walking through as a participant, trying to direct traffic, prompted my research,” said Anderson. “We found there were options that were not very

good.” Like so many families, they were thrust into a situation where a quick decision was necessary. “There is tremendous psychological pressure looking out for the welfare of parents. Ron Anderson is writAll these decisions ing a book on senior for placement are housing options. made in the middle of a crisis. Something happens to force a decision in the middle of a Medicare-funded hospital stay,” said Anderson. “Decisions are made using a social worker at the hospital as a traffic cop.” Anderson says there is a big movement in development towards assisted living facilities, which can run seniors up to $60,000 a year in this market. “Most studies show that aging Boomers and Greatest-Generation seniors have a net worth of $240,000 including real estate,” he said. “With 90-plus the fastest growing demographic in America, how can this work over the long haul?” Anderson points out that when there

are no assets remaining people will move to the least-expensive option, and they need to understand what that means in different parts of the country. “There are two levels of nursing home care, private-pay and the Medicaid group. You find the standards of care are dramatically different,” he said. He points out that because Minnesota has a mandated quality of care that attempts to close the care gap between the two groups, things are better here. “We can’t rely on federal funding in the future to take care of these people,” said Anderson, who also believes pensions aren’t necessarily the answer either. “All pensions are under fire. Companies are filing bankruptcy to get out of pensions.” He advises seniors to take stock and use their assets wisely, and focus on quality of life above all else. “Independent living at an affordable cost, this is the challenge all seniors will face in the near future,” he said. “Who is talking about it? Local governments aren’t funded and can’t help.” This is why Anderson developed Woodbridge Cooperative of New Hope and purchased Chardon Court independent living facility, two affordable alternatives to expensive assisted living cen-

ters. According to Anderson, about twothirds of all Woodbridge Coop owners pay cash for their homes. A monthly fee of approximately $500 covers heating, taxes, insurance, management fees, maintenance and a reserve account for improvements. “Most people will live at Woodbridge for much less money than they lived in their home,” he said. Chardon Court runs about $775 for a 660 square feet apartment, which includes an “I’m okay” daily visit from the staff. They are able to keep costs down because additional services and food are purchased as needed,” said Anderson. “We are staffed there with people practiced in housing requirements for seniors.” Anderson plans to explore these and many more issues related to senior housing in the book he hopes to complete within the year. “It will be a good handbook in the future for people who need it,” he said. “The education piece is what is needed to really support people in examining all the options.” For more information on Woodbridge Cooperative of New Hope, call 763-5352013. For Chardon Court, call 763-5350607.

RC Flyers FROM PAGE 12 He pointed to the glue gun, noting, “That’s the first thing we plug in when we get here.” The walls force the flyers to sharpen their skills as they maneuver their foam aircraft within the tight quarters. They can’t do some of the tricks allowed in open skies — the loops, rolls, “knife edges,” where a plane flies on its side for an extended period — but it lets the 12member group feed their passion yearround. “We don’t like to hang ’em up for the winter,” Jennings said. As proof of his dedication, Jennings owns 52 planes, keeping them “wherever they fit,” said the hobbyist, whose house has become a hangar. “I live in a large home and its full.” Another charter member, Danny Collier of Bloomington, has been flying 17 years, ever since a limo from the Make-a-Wish Foundation brought him to Hobby Warehouse in Richfield when he was about 11. “I went to the hobby store, picked out the plane I wanted. Hugged it,” said Collier, who battles sickle cell anemia. Collier later went to work in the shop, where he met the man considered the

group’s most skilled pilot, Mike Robin, a 44-year RC veteran, also from Credit River Township. The club’s co-founder and owner of a printing shop in Bloomington is well older than Collier, who is in his late 20s, but he and the group would like to see a new generation take to the skies — or the rafters. But some significant barriers pose challenges in attracting new flyers. There is the aforementioned question of space, for one. Also, the planes are not cheap — a basic foam beginner’s rig costs between $100 and $200, not counting the replacement parts inevitably required. The learning curve can be steep, too. Mastering the pitch and yaw requires finesse and much practice, so much so that there are technically accurate computer-based RC flight simulators on the market to help fliers do so. In the field, beginners start tethered to an instructor who is ready to flip a switch on his own controller should something go awry for the novice, much like driver’s ed instructors and their passenger-side breaks. “They crash and the get discouraged and they want to do something different,” said Robin, father of a 24-year-old and a 26-year-old, neither of which have taken up his hobby. Still, “this is a popular hobby,” Jennings said. “It supports three hobby stores (in the area).” Two of them are in Richfield, which hosts Hub Hobby in addition to Hobby Warehouse. Despite some barriers to entry, the hobby attracts enthusiasts because the cost and potential early frustrations are well worth it, club members say. Heritage of Edina is proud to present its 5-star senior/assisted living community.

Dear Maria, Just a not of appreciation to you and your staff for taking such good care of Leonard Granzow during his residency at the Tiffany Building. This is my third relative who has resided at Heritage over the past five plus years, and I can’t say enough for the care given to each of them. I find it hard to understand the bad press that is given to other facilities. I’m sure some of it is warranted, but because I have never experienced it at Heritage I find it hard to comprehend. Your personnel are so accommodating! Mary Sandahl has been very supportive to us whenever we needed information, checking with his doctors for medications, or just personally checking on Leonard. I know that is supposed to happen and is all part of the job description, but when it is actually realized it is special to the individual. Just a short time before Leonard’s death, a couple times a week he would still walk himself down to Mary’s office and sit and chat with her. I know she didn’t really have the time, but she always made time for him. Whenever Leonard had to go to the doctor she always had him ready to go when we asked. Sometimes it was on short notice, but he was always ready just the same. I would also like to mention a couple of aides, Nick and Mustafas, who we have had more contact with than some of your other fine people. Again, they are always so caring, cheerful, respectful, and willing to help even on short notice. READERS’ Again, our sincere thanks for how you and your staff care CHOICE for each resident of your facility. We often recommend you to others and will continue to do so. www.MinnLocal.com Sincerely,

Pi it, you’ll like it Students at Richfield Dual Language School celebrated Pi Day March 14. The numerical representation of the date, 3.14, is Pi, the ratio of a circle’s circumference to its diameter. In celebrating Pi day, students in the school’s Enrichment Resource Classes program convened outside to compete in a 3.14-legged race, in which students were linked by a large rubber band with a partial paper cut out of a foot, to represent .14 worth of a foot. The race winners were awarded by being allowed to smash whipped cream pies in the faces of the fourth graders.

Third graders admire the symbol for Pi drawn in whipped cream. Students were quizzed to conclude festivities. When one was asked to describe Pi, he resourcefully took the can of whipped cream and made the symbol. (Photos by Andrew Wig – Sun Newspapers)

an artist friend. “She said, ‘Sheila, you’ve got talent.’” The palm reader kept painting, and noticed a peculiar phenomenon. When she finishes a painting, she walks away, “and when I come back an hour later,” she said, “faces show up.” They appear by the hundreds in each work, Van Houten said. “I’m still finding them.” In one painting, even Willie Nelson showed up. To Van Houten, the faces, plus the random assortment of images — from animals to landscapes to humanoid figures and a seeming preponderance of birds — that appear are not merely the result of random brush strokes. She believes something else is happening. “The only thing I can say is I’m spiritdirected. I’m what’s called a pure channel,” she said. When painting, “I don’t think of anything. I’ll just go and allow whatever to come through, come through.” “She kind of goes blank during these sessions … and something just kind of tells her to swoop up here, or mush here,” observed Scott Anderson who works alongside Van Houten offering services as a psychic. Despite her inclination toward the

So far a facility in Brainerd also has the cards, and Dolliff said he is targeting a facility in Edina next. “It’s a great tool. Every place should have them,” said Jodie Kneip, a life enrichment manager at Sunrise who leads the art therapy sessions. Van Houten is hoping her art can help veterans suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder, too.

The gregarious Van Houten offers 30 different personal services out of her home in southeast Richfield. Among them, she is a palm reader, a career coach and a ghost buster. She remembers the exact day she added “artist” to the list: May 5, 2011. “I woke up one morning,” Van Houten said. “I just started to paint and I had no idea whether I was good or not.” The native of south Minneapolis said that without thinking, she decorated the canvas with a wild procession of brush strokes, with intriguing results. She showed her kaleidoscopic work to

supernatural, Van Houten describes herself as “a very practical person,” and she wanted her work to do something more than just sit there. “I thought to myself, how in the world are we going to make use of all these paintings?” she said. “We don’t really have any wall space left.” She remembers comforting her dying father by bringing him pictures of ice crystals supposed to have been charged with positive emotions, “and he got very peaceful and he sort of fell asleep,” she remembers, “and he died the next morning.” Van Houten also is motivated by the memory of her mother, whom she lost to Alzheimer’s. “I thought, ‘I think what I’m supposed to be doing is to put this art in the hands of Alzheimer’s patients,’ so that’s what I’ve been doing,” she said. “It’s just been a riot to see how

As the ladies in Sunrise’s Reminiscence Neighborhood sat around the table last week, with the wildly vivid prints spread out, staff member Jodie Kneip asked the ladies to describe the first thing they noticed in the pink and yellow arrangement lying before them. “There’s a man there,” said one woman, smiling. “He looks like a lot of fun.” Kneip asked what they would call the painting. “‘Bouquet of Flowers,’” said one. “‘My Mother’s Garden,’” another offered, sparking a strain of conversation among the women about their mothers and gardens. One resident saw a tree on fire. Kneip asked where at. Yellowstone National Park, the woman replied, prompting a short round of recollections on trips out

west. Kneip brought out another painting. One of the ladies called it “‘Midnight Dream.’” The others agreed: This is a very good name for the strokes of purple and pink, and black and white. One saw a snowy hill. So did some others. Another saw two girls dancing. “How do you think they know each other?” Kneip asked. She has learned to give such prompts in the past five months leading what they call “art critiques.” She has taught herself as she goes, because “discovery art,” fresh from van Houten’s brush, came with no instructions. Results have improved as Kneip has refined her guidance. “The first time, I was like, ‘Isn’t this a cool painting?’ And they were like, ‘Yeah that’s cool.’” That was about it. But a light bulb went off during a trip to the Minneapolis Institute of Arts. The museum hosts tours as therapy for those

with Alzheimer’s and Kneip noticed how the tour leaders instigate lively discussion by asking the right questions. She has since borrowed from these methods of effacement. The effects of the past several months of guided gazing have been clear, Sunrise staff say. “It seems to promote a feeling of bonding,” Kneip said. “People who … maybe spend time with themselves in the other room, maybe don’t sit with other ladies … Certain residents really seem to become more attached to the residents around them after (the art sessions).”

Some kind of ‘magic’ Art has been used in Alzheimer’s therapy for some time, but art created with this specific intension seems to be a novel development in the world of memory care. DISCOVERY ART: TO NEXT PAGE

DISCOVERY ART: FROM PREVIOUS PAGE “I’ve never heard about it. I mean, it’s interesting,” said Dr. Robert Kane, Director of the University of Minnesota’s Center on Aging. While Van Houten’s work appears to be unique in its aim, the question remains: How does it work? Dolliff and staff at Sunrise are hesitant to venture toward a supernatural explanation such as Van Houten’s, but there is one term they feel safe using. “I’m into energy, so I can relate to Sheila (Van Houten),” said Emily Figueroa, who also guides the gazing sessions at Sunrise. “The energy she

riences and feedback, and eventually, I think, more science-based evaluation of it,” he said. Kane agrees. While “there is no theoretical basis for why Alzheimer’s patients would be attracted to (the paintings) … it’s provocative; it’s interesting, and it needs more work.” Kneip theorizes that part of the art’s efficacy is its open-endedness and the creative, judgment-free environment it fosters in a daily world that has become sometimes befuddling for the residents of the Reminiscence Neighborhood. “They know they’re not going to be wrong,” she said. “Anything they say is right and beautiful and valuable, and it

Is Water Ruining Your Chimney? The Professionals At AirBroom Minnesota In Excelsior Can Help How does your chimney look? Are the bricks crumbling? Does it have White or Black exterior staining? Are you afraid to use your fireplace because you’re not sure how safe it is? When was the last time you used it? The professionals at AirBroom Minnesota Fireplace and Air Duct Cleaning in Excelsior can restore both your confidence and your chimney. Did you know that water causes more damage to masonry chimneys than fire? Your chimney, unlike other parts of your house, is constantly exposed to the elements. They are generally constructed of brick, mortar, tile, steel, and iron. All of these materials suffer deterioration as a result of prolonged contact with water. Freeze and thaw cycles so familiar here in the Twin Cities cause stress on the chimney. Water that has penetrated expands and contracts. Left unchecked it will cause interior and exterior damage to your home and masonry chimney. Some of the damage that can be caused includes: 1) spalled and broken exterior brickwork, 2) deteriorated masonry and metal firebox assemblies, 3) rusted dampers, 4) decayed mortar, cracked or missing flue liners, and in the worst case scenario damage to adjoining walls, ceilings, and woodwork

1) Install a chimney cap. This is the most inexpensive measure to prevent water penetration to the flue and inside chimney elements. We sell and install locally manufactured caps for as little as $99. 2) Repair or replace a damaged chimney crown. The crown sits atop your chimney and covers and seals it from the flue liners to the chimney edge. Many chimneys are built with an inadequate crown constructed from common mortar mix. Mortar is not designed for and will not withstand years of prolonged moisture exposure without cracking and chipping which allows water to penetrate the chimney. A proper crown is constructed of a Portland cement mixture and formed

Life is too short for housework.

to provide an overhang drip edge. This assures the water will shed helping to prevent erosion in the mortar and brick of the chimneys surfaces. Keeping the crown “watertight” and shedding away from the sponge like masonry elements that the chimney is built of is the most important element to preventing deterioration. At AirBroom Minnesota we use the industry leading line of Saver products to build and repair chimneys. Use of these products allows us to pass on manufacturers material warranties of up to 15 years to our clients. 3) Waterproof your masonry chimney and crown. Most masonry is porous and will absorb large amounts of water. Brick acts like a sponge absorbing water and wicking it to the chimney interior. Products we use are specifically developed for use as waterproofing agents on masonry chimneys. These are vapor permeable – which means they allow the masonry to breath out but not in. This allows water that has penetrated the chimney to escape while preventing additional water from entering from the outside. Non vapor permeable sealers commonly available should never be used because they trap moisture inside actually accelerating deterioration. We use a special permeable sealer with a 10 year consumer warranty to protect your chimney. Doing this before deterioration occurs can save you hundreds or even thousands of dollars in future repairs. Water damage to chimneys is usually a slow subtle process. The problem is generally not obvious until it has become quite serious. Although these prevention measures may cost you a few dollars they can save you a lot more by preventing large future masonry repairs. The Hartmann’s at AirBroom Minnesota in Excelsior offer free no obligation repair estimates in the Western Metro area. Call John, Jim, or Lynda today to arrange a free no obligation estimate. Visit us at AirBroomMinnesota.com or call us at 952.545.2254. As a bonus, repair jobs over $750 scheduled with us prior to April 15 receive $100 off when you mention this article.

kind of starts to build.” In a world where life goes by one moment at a time, memory care providers see proof — that something is working — in the expressions they see. “If there is a smile, just for that moment, that lights up my day completely,” Figueroa said. Dolliff called it “that little pocket of joy and happiness.” How it works is up to interpretation and study, but those exposed to Van Houten’s burgeoning form of therapy agree on one conclusion: Something is going on here. Whatever it is, Figueroa said, “it’s happening, here at Sunrise.”

State title up for grabs Minnesota high school sports March Madness ends this weekend as the state Class 4A boys basketball tournament convenes at Target Center. Defending champion Hopkins is the top seed. The Royals were scheduled to play Woodbury in the quarterfinals March 21. Winner of that game advances to the semifinals against either No. 4 seed Osseo or Duluth East at 6 p.m. Thursday, March 22. In the lower bracket, Eden Prairie met No. 3 seeded Eastview and No. 2 Lakeville North played Moorhead in quarterfinal games. Winners of those lower-bracket games meet in the semifinals at 8 p.m. Thursday. State Class 4A championship game is 8 p.m. Saturday, March 24.

All-star basketball series Many of the state’s top senior players will appear in the 30th annual Minnesota High School AllStar Basketball Series a week after the state tournament. Doubleheaders will be Friday, March 30, at Halenbeck Hall on the campus of St. Cloud State University and Saturday, March 31, at Leonard Center on the campus of Macalester College in St. Paul. Minnetonka’s Latrell Love and Sanjay Lumpkin of Benilde-St. Margaret’s will play for the Gold All-Stars. Isaiah Gray of BSM will be a member of the Green squad. Siyani Chambers of Hopkins will participate for the Maroon team. Shawn Bear of Richfield and Isaiah Zierden of BSM will compete for the Blue squad. – Compiled by Greg Kleven

Spartans settle for second at state Richfield girls make first trip to tournament a memorable one BY GREG KLEVEN - SUN NEWSPAPERS Richfield made its first appearance in a state girls basketball tournament a memorable one. The Spartans capped a historic season with a second-place finish in the State Class 3A Tournament March 14-17. Richfield lost 65-45 to DeLaSalle in the title game March 17 at Target Center. Richfield ended its impressive season with a 27-5 record. The Spartans won Classic Suburban Conference and Section 5 championships before finishing second at state. Richfield earned its first trip to state with a 72-61 victory over Holy Family

Catholic in the Section 5 title game March 8. The Spartans were seeded first at state and made a strong run to the Class 3A championship game. Richfield defeated Red Wing 68-53 in the quarterfinals March 14 at Williams Arena. The Spartans followed with a 45-28 semifinal triumph over Hutchinson March 15 at Target Center. But Richfield was unable to dethrone DeLaSalle (28-3) as state champion losing by 20 points to the third-seeded Islanders. Spartan players were frustrated in the title game by missed open shots and DeLaSalle’s aggressive defense that limited Richfield’s leading scorer Jessica January to 12 points, 13 under her season average. The Islanders also won the battle of the boards by achieving a 58-36 rebounding advantage.

Bry Guyton led the Spartans in scoring with 15 points and Sierra FordWashington finished with 10 points. Richfield had three players selected to the all-state Class 3A tourney squad. Those honorees were guards January and Ford-Washington and center Guyton.

Community support Richfield’s state tourney appearance unified the community more than ever. The Spartans filled 40 buses with fans for their state quarterfinal game at Williams Arena. And Richfield supporters were in full force at Target Center for the final two rounds. “This was a great experience for both the players and community,” said Richfield coach Lee Ann Wise. Richfield High senior Karen Kreidler capped her adapted floor hockey career in style scoring eight goals in three state tournament games March 16-17 at Bloomington Jefferson High School. Kreidler helped her South Suburban Flyers team place fourth at state in the Physically Impaired (PI) Division. The Flyers are composed of high school players from Richfield, Edina, Bloomington and Eden Prairie. South Suburban defeated BrainerdPillager 9-4 in Friday’s quarterfinals. The Flyers lost to eventual state champion, the Robins, 8-1 in Saturday’s semifinals. The Robins represent Hopkins, the Robbinsdale schools and Mound Westonka. South Suburban concluded tournament play with an 8-5 loss to AnokaHennepin in the third-place game later that day. South Suburban finished with a 10-5-1 record. The Flyers were second in the South Division with an 8-1-1 record during the regular season. “We finished the season strong at state,” said Flyers coach Dan Slinden. “We worked hard as a team. “Kreidler scored eight goals in the tournament and is our team’s career

scoring leader with 228 goals. She was named to the all-state tournament team along with Kennedy junior Dequan Williams.” Williams supplied three goals and four assists in the tournament. He is the team’s career assists leader in that category with 80. The Flyers scored six times in the third period to pull out a 9-4 victory over Brainerd-Pillager in the quarterfinals. Kreidler supplied four goals and one assist. Williams and ninth-grader Alexei Dickinson had two goals and three assists each. Senior Nicholas Nieson and ninthgrader Jacob Yancy collected one assist apiece. Kreidler scored the Flyers’ lone goal during an 8-1 loss to the Robins in the semifinals. The Robins went on to defeat Dakota United 7-2 in the title game. South Suburban goalie Christopher Reichel made 24 saves. The Flyers settled for fourth-place honors. South Suburban lost 8-5 to Anoka-Hennepin in final-round action. Kreidler led the Flyers’ offense with three goals and two assists. Williams and freshman winger Andrew Mortinson scored one goal each. Goalie Reichel stopped 13 shots. “Sophomore Daniel Schmitz did a good job at defense for us this season and Reichel played well in goal,” said coach Slinden. “I was very happy with the way our season went.”

Dhein is named Richfield hockey team’s MVP Senior center Mick Dhein was one of several Richfield boys hockey players who received post-season individual honors. Dhein was the recipient of the Spartans’ Darby Hendrickson Most Valuable Player Award. He also earned All-Classic Suburban Conference honors and finished his prep hockey career with 170 points according to Richfield head coach John Christ. Dhein scored 29 goals and collected 42 assists for 71 points during his senior season. Junior forward Kevin Krohn was named Most Improved Player. The Al Payne Mr. Hustle Award went to senior

defenseman Ryan Erickson. Senior forward Tim Harris was presented the team’s Hobey Baker Award for character and community contributions. Senior forwards Tyler Martinez and Sam Schrick received all-conference honorable mention. Richfield finished the season with a 917-1 overall record after losing 14-1 to Beck in the Section 2A quarterfinals Feb. 24 at Parade Ice Garden. The Spartans opened the playoffs with a 5-2 victory over Providence Academy Feb. 22 at Parade. -Compiled by Greg Kleven

Girls basketball FROM PAGE 27 “Richfield is a like a small town in a big city and its community will always be there to support you. “Our girls were fantastic during the tournament but couldn’t make key shots against DeLaSalle. “Our players worked hard to get to state.” After a slow start in the title game, Richfield took a 12-10 lead before DeLaSalle went on an 11-2 run midway in the first half. The Spartan had good scoring opportunities throughout the first half but couldn’t get shots to drop trailing 33-22 at halftime. The Spartans pulled to within six points in the second half (43-37) before DeLaSalle steadily increased its lead. Guard Allina Starr was the Islanders’ leading scorer with 24 points. Forward Tyseanna Johnson finished with 16 points.

Road to the finals The Spartans relied on strong defensive efforts and valuable scoring contributions from January and FordWashington as they won first- and second-round state tournament games. Richfield, seeded No. 1 in the tourney, defeated Red Wing 68-53 in the quarterfi-

nals March 14 at Williams Arena and came back the following day to dominate Hutchinson for a 45-28 semifinal victory at Target Center. Richfield’s pesky defense created 25 turnovers as the Spartans defeated Hutchinson 45-28 in the semifinals. January provided 23 points and nine rebounds for the winning Spartans. Ford-Washington came through with 10 points. Guyton dominated the boards with 10 rebounds. Richfield went on a 14-3 run late in the first half to build a 26-13 halftime advantage. “Our main goal was to run and have some fun,” said coach Wise. “Our defense also ramped up.” January directed the Spartan offense and made things happen defensively with her quickness and ball-stealing skills. “I wanted to make sure my teammates got into the game,” said January. Richfield got off to a slow start in the quarterfinals before beating Red Wing 68-53. The Wingers led 29-24 at halftime. However, Richfield came back strong in the second half outscoring Red Wing 44-24. January scored 16 of her 21 points in the first half. Ford-Washington finished with 20 points. Hannah Wise had nine points and Hailey Lindblom contributed seven points.
