Stabbing FROM PAGE 1 It is currently being investigated whether the Minneapolis and Richfield stabbings are related, said Todd Sandell, Deputy Director of Richfield Police. As of press time Tuesday, names and ages of the Richfield victims had not been released. “They’re still following up on leads and the case is still under investigation,” Lt. Jay Henthorn of Richfield Police said.

Police responded to the Richfield scene after a family member found the victims. Police believe there is no danger to the public. Police are looking for a black 2008 Cadillac CTS missing from the Richfield scene. The vehicle has a “Critical Habitat” lady’s-slipper-themed license plate, number 5AU-217. Anyone with information regarding the location of the vehicle may call the Richfield Police Department at 612861-9825. The last homicide in Richfield occurred in 2009. Last week’s stabbing had not yet been officially ruled a homicide as of press time.

Since losing nearly 200 pounds three years ago for reality show “The Biggest Loser,” Richfield resident O’Neal Hampton has taken advantage of his newfound mobility. Getting through the work day and getting home was all he could manage as a 420pounder, but now he the 54year-old is making the

With a stated aim to pay forward the blessing of his renewed life, O’Neal, who has stabilized his weight at 243 with boxing workouts and weight lifting, is showing no signs of slowing, even as he rehabilitates from two knee surgeries in two years. Although the organization has been active for sometime, the former station manager at an Edina post office will officially launch the Bloomington-based O’Neal Hampton Wellness HAMPTON: TO PAGE 21

Senate District 50 race taking form Legislators and candidates jostle for position in Richfield and Bloomington BY ANDREW WIG – SUN NEWSPAPERS A new Senate district took shape in Richfield and Bloomington last month when the state released freshly scrambled legislative maps. Two weeks later, the race in just-christened Senate District 50 and sub-district 50A is shaping up. Last week Sen. Ken Kelash, DFL, who was placed in District 61 with last month’s redistricting, announced he will move into District 50, which covers western and southern Richfield and the western two-thirds of Bloomington. Kelash lives three blocks north of the new border between Districts 50 and 61. The decision to move, and vie to continue serving much of his constituency in Richfield and Bloomington, came when redistricting put Kelash in the same zone as Sen.

Scott Dibble, DFL. Rather than challenge Dibble, Kelash chose to move south, where he will face another challenger for the Democratic endorsement in Melissa Halvorson Wicklund, chair of the Bloomington School Board. It is not clear which Republican will challenge for the District 50 seat after former state legislator Bill Peterson made plans to run, then retracted his candidacy Monday. In District 50A, which covers a northern chunk of Bloomington and the western and southern portion of Richfield, Craig Marston sets his sights on the open House seat. Marston, a residential remodeler by trade, ran unsuccessfully for the District 63 Senate seat in 2010. His Richfield residence fell within 30 feet of the new boundary between District 50 and 63 when the new maps were released last month. While Marston stays put, Rep. Linda Slocum, DFL, will move into District 50A, seeking the seat. This move was prompted when the new map placed her residence in the same district, 63B, as incumbent Rep. Jean Wagenius, DFL.

Requiring CPR instruction can save lives Why are Jamie LaLonde, Natasha Fleischman and Dale Wakasugi supporting a bill that would require Minnesota’s public schools to teach cardiopulmonary resuscitation? For the best possible reasons: It saved their lives. Both the Minnesota House and Senate are considering bills that would require all Minnesota Public Schools to teach CPR to students grades 7-12. Chief authors Sen. Dan Hall and Rep. Mary Holberg have bi-partisan support. In recent testimony, a Minnesota School Boards Association representative expressed reasonable concerns about adding a new mandate when budgets are challenged. However, what’s a higher priority, than teaching young people how to save lives? Testimony suggested that about half of Minnesota’s school districts do, and half don’t teach CPR. So I hope the bill passes. Twenty-year-old Jamie LaLonde of Bloomington testified that she was working at the Mall of America when “I had a sudden cardiac arrest … I was 18 years old. I’m helping the American Heart Association with this bill because the only

JOE NATHAN Guest Columnist

reason I’m alive today is because someone that was trained in CPR made it to the scene within five minutes.” “Although I’m very lucky I still can’t help but think that none of the 16-20 year olds around me that were working with me knew to start CPR. Sudden Cardiac Arrest can happen to anyone, even young people, and I think it’s important we prepare people as best we can so that if they ever do get the chance to save a life they can,” she said. LaLonde is attending school at Inver Hills Community College to become a paramedic. Stillwater School Board member Natasha Fleischman also recently testified about the bill. She wrote, “CPR saved my life. I was a 33-year-old mother of two in 2002 when my heart stopped for the first time (with no known heart condition). I was working at the St. Paul Public Schools. I was on first floor and the director

of safety and security, Will Waterkamp ran down from the 4th floor to perform CPR on me. After the St. Paul Fire Department defibrillated me five times, I was taken to Regions Hospital, diagnosed with dilated cardiomyopathy and received an implantable defibrillator (ICD).” She continued, “I have worked with the AHA and the Go Red campaign, as well as WomenHeart: the National Coalition of Women with Heart Disease and the Sudden Cardiac Arrest Association to build knowledge and skills that save lives…. When someone suffers sudden cardiac arrest, which is often the case when a high school athlete collapses on the field, every minute counts. This legislation is meant to have every high school student learn CPR before graduating and have the ability to save the lives of family members or friends.” “In Stillwater, we already teach CPR in our required health classes. When I conducted a study for the AHA using the CPR anytime kit, we wanted to compare two schools, one that taught traditional CPR and one that only had a 30-minute course with the anytime kit. We

taught kids to do CPR in 30 minutes. And the preliminary data showed that their compressions were more consistently effective than those of students in a 4hour traditional CPR class. Pretty impressive what can be accomplished!” Fleischman said. Finally, Dale Wakasugi said, “Since my first arrest in December 2007, I have made a commitment to myself to help others by ‘paying it forward’. To help place as many AEDs in as many public places as possible and to help raise awareness of the importance of knowing CPR and how to use an AED… I want to help high school students learn CPR and how to use an AED, since my key rescuer was a high school student who just learned CPR and how to use an AED in health class three weeks prior to my event.” Joe Nathan, former public school teacher, administrator, PTA president and parent of three public school graduates, is director of the Center for School Change at Macalester College. He can be reached at jnathan@ macalester.edu. Columns reflect the opinion of the author.

It’s time for us to embrace social media When it comes to social media there are two different Jared Huizengas. First, there’s Jared the individual who has embraced social media as his second-favorite form of communication (behind only text messaging). If he can’t send you a text message or write on your wall, he probably doesn’t want to talk to you badly enough to call. Second, there’s Jared the newspaper guy, who eschews new forms of communication – particularly those that limit his longwinded nature. If he is lim-

JARED HUIZENGA Wayzata/Long Lake/Orono Community Editor ited in any way, be it a character limit or space, he’s just going to call you so he can continue to ramble. In recent months, there’s been great discussion around the newsroom as to how we can embrace social media as a new tool and utilize it so it helps us as well as our readers.

Some editors have started Facebook pages for their editions, while others have migrated to Twitter. I fall into the latter group. Although, truth be told, it isn’t all that new. Back in 2009, we experimented with producing daily newscasts. These newscasts lasted anywhere from 2 to 10 minutes and included news from our coverage areas and neighboring cities. Some editors naturally took to being on screen. Others – myself included – showed that no matter what our moms said,

we have faces made for radio and voices made for print. During the dark days of newscasts, I started a Twitter account and used it to Tweet links to our daily newscasts. It didn’t help drive up my “ratings” much. Once the newscast experiment was discontinued, I put it away in the back of my mind. Along with that memory went the Twitter account. That is until recently when I decided to start using it again HUIZENGA: TO NEXT PAGE

Friends, co-workers remember Andy Hamre Hamre was ECM-Sun Printing employee Andrew Hamre is being remembered this week as a man who loved fishing, his family and his friends. Hamre, 49, passed away Tuesday, Feb. 28, while at work at the ECM-Sun Printing facility in Hudson, Wis., from a massive heart attack. He leaves behind a wife, two sons, many friends and his co-workers – all who will miss him very much. During an afternoon break, Andy suffered a heart attack. Coworkers attempted CPR and called emergency crews, but he died a short time later. “As always, our teams pulled together but this time in an attempt to save Andy’s life,” plant employee Maria Beaupre said. “Despite all our efforts, Andy passed away.” His friends and family quickly mention “fishing” when asked what he liked doing the most in his free time. Andy was an avid fishermen, and had won several trophies for his catches. Annette said that Andy loved the New Richmond area for its great fishing, with Mary Park Lake being a favorite spot. “They’d catch bass, crappies, perch and sunnies there all the time,” Annette said. His main fishing buddy was son, Josh, age 14. “They’d compete against each other in their own bass tournaments,” Annette said. Last year, Josh won the contests. “He kicked his dad’s butt.” His co-workers at Sun Printing also knew how much he loved to fish. He and his son fished as often as they could, one

He also loved sports, and supported his son who played in a local baseball league every season. “Andy was a dedicated, hard-working and reliable employee who would stay to the end when things went wrong. When things got tough, Andy got tougher. He will be missed by many, as will his singing throughout the plant each afternoon once the deadlines had been met,” Cody Griffin, print plant manager, said. Annette said Andy enjoyed his work and his co-workers at Sun Printing, where he’d been employed for five years. The work team was like family, she said. There would be occasional disagreements, “but at the end of the day, it was all good,” she said. Andy grew up in northwest Minneapolis, and attended Edison High School. He worked in shipping and receiving, and he and Annette also operated a home daycare business there. If you thought all we did was news, you’re mistaken Our website has a variety of blogs to bring you another take on life If you were to be so curious as to click on the Opinion tab on our website, minnlocal.com, you might be surprised at what you find there: blogs. Yes, that’s right, we blog. (Is that a verb? Should it be? The questions an editor sometimes asks of himself may be of no consequence to folks outside the newsroom, but that one’s been perplexing me for a while. Let me know your thoughts.) Ah, yes, blogging. The long and sometimes short of it is there is often a lack of space in our print edition for the kinds of writing we’d like to share with you. Luckily, the Internet is a rather big place and can handle the weight of multiple writers writing on numerous subjects. At the moment, I’d like to highlight blogs that may be of interest to you, our cherished readers:

The Wahl Street Journal Our senior managing editor, Paul Wahl, has a unique way of looking at the world. No, that’s not a euphemism. After nearly 30 years in the news game, he’s got a handle on how things work in the business and in life in general. A true reporter’s perspective on current events,

It has the longest basic training of all the armed forces (13 weeks vs. 6). My son left the Twin Cities as a boy — 13 weeks later he was a man. He had been yelled at but it did not dehumanize him — it strengthened him. He learned from his [drill instructors] to be respectful, responsible, disciplined, to be a

past events and the day-to-day.

Peggy’s Journal Working in journalism presents an interesting problem: Remembering everything that has happened over the years can be daunting. Executive Editor Peggy Bakken has acquired the memorial trait in spades. Touching on everything from Minnesota history to rock concerts, Peggy provides context and insights along the way.

Scene and Heard Community Editor Jared Huizenga is a media addict. Thinking about seeing a new movie? He can tell you the production value and give an honest review. Want to check out an album? He probably knows the personal lives of the musicians better than they do themselves. There you have it; Sun Newspapers doesn’t just give you the community news you’ve always relied on us for. We’re a whole lot more. Look for new blogs and posts appearing at MinnLocal.com/staff_blogs.

Questions raised as Edina Republican nabs DFL-inspired domain names Web editor for Republican Senate District 41 registered the web addresses the same day redistricting maps were released BY ANDREW WIG – SUN NEWSPAPERS Last month’s legislative redistricting sent legislators all over Minnesota scrambling to respond to the new political maps, but one Republican in Edina was quicker than Democrats, snatching up a series of web domain names the DFL might have found handy. According to domain research database Whois.net, on Feb. 21 Angela Berger, the web editor for the GOP’s Senate District 41 site, purchased sd49dfl.com, sd49dfl.org, sd49democrats.com, sd49democrats.org and dflsd49.com — the same day the state released redistricting plans that take effect this election cycle. The new maps give Edina and western Bloomington, which had been considered District 41, the District 49 label. The new district 49 also includes a portion of northeast Eden Prairie. Former DFL District 41 chair Tom LaForce noted Berger’s domain registries the night of Feb. 28 on his Facebook page, Politics in Edina. He said he was typing potential DFL domain names into his browser out of curiosity, when it appeared he was being redirected toward the GOP’s District 41 site. Further investigation brought up a name he recognized. “I saw Angie Berger registered it,” he said. “I was surprised when she did that.” Entering sd49dfl.com — or any of the four other DFL-flavored domain names — brings the user to that address, but the page bears the nameplate of Godaddy.com, the service used to regis-

ter the domains. “It’s like she’s trying top keep DFLers from getting their message out at all,” LaForce said. Berger insisted she acted alone in registering the domain names. “This was an entirely personal transaction that I made, and that’s all I have to say about it,” she said when reached by phone. “It’s her personal thing to do. There is nothing we have authorized at all,” said Lynn Swon, Republican Senate District 41 co-chair. “It’s hard to stop an individual from doing what they are going to do.” A post under the name Angela Berger, who operates a blog called Conservative Cravings, later appeared in the comments section beneath an initial version of this story posted mnsun.com. “Ironically, I didn’t even know about this technique of buying domain names until I saw this past summer that someone had purchased a derivative of my blog name and redirected it to the Edina Democrats website,” wrote. “If you type in conservativecravings.com, it sends you to SD41democrats.org. I guess it’s OK for a Democrat to buy up a domain name and redirect it but not a Republican. “ A search on Whois.net shows the domain has been claimed by an anonymous party. Berger did not return a call requesting elaboration. When asked about her personal views on the use of “cybersquatting” as a political tactic, Swon responded, “Given the title that I am, we’ve got no official comment on this at all.” The Minnesota DFL was looking into the domain purchases last week. “I don’t want to dignify this with a comment, because I really find it petty,” said Kate Monson, Minnesota DFL director of communications. The DFL does own, at least, dflsd49.org, although it directs browsers to the District 49 that still technically covers Andover, Ham Lake and most of Coon Rapids. The DFL’s page for District 41, which covers Edina for the time

being, is sd41democrats.org. Neither LaForce nor the Minnesota DFL allege the domain purchases to be part of any concerted GOP strategy. “I don’t know how the local GOP makes its decisions,” LaForce posted on his the Politics in Edina Facebook page

Finding support where there was none Students suffering from concussions have a place to meet with others in Bloomington BY MIKE HANKS – SUN NEWSPAPERS Matt Hovila distinctly remembers his last basketball game at Bloomington Jefferson High School. Unlike most seniors, his last game didn’t end with a playoff loss or an improbable state tournament victory, it ended with a conference victory against Rosemount. And it was the first conference game of the season. There was little indication in the final minutes of the game that Hovila’s playing days were over. He had aspirations of playing collegiate basketball, but those went by the wayside following the victory. Hovila suffered a concussion during that Rosemount victory last season. Instead of spending this winter on a basketball court at an outstate school, Hovila is studying applied economics at the University of Minnesota. And he’s reaching out to those who are traveling the same path he has since fourth grade, students affected by concussions. Hovila is the co-founder of Connections4Concussions, a support group for students who are coping with the effects of a concussion or mild trau-

matic brain injury. At 19, Hovila is an elder statesman for the newly formed support group, which held its first meeting last week at Penn Lake Library in Bloomington. “It’s good to be with people who know the same struggles, and don’t judge you for it,” he said. Hovila wants students from across the Twin Cities and beyond to know that they’re not the only one suffering from the lingering effects of a concussion, a feeling he knows well in the years since his first concussion, suffered while playing football as a fourthgrader. What Hovila and his family didn’t know all those years ago was that his first concussion would be just one of many. He suffered two concussions within a one-month period during that fourth-grade football season. The first wasn’t significant, according to Hovila, but the second one turned out to be life changing, even though it wasn’t as hard of a hit. “The effects of it were more serious because of the first hit,” he said. The second concussion had lasting effects. He had bouts with fatigue and memory loss, struggled in school, became short-tempered and was prone to outbursts, all uncharacteristic for him prior to fourth grade, he explained. Hovila’s life returned to normal in fifth grade, but concussions became a part of his life as a basketball player, starting with a concussion in sixth grade. Headaches following that concussion occasionally forced Hovila to go

home early from school. After each concussion Hovila would be diagnosed by a doctor and cleared to resume activity before returning to basketball. “We did everything we were supposed to at the time,” he said. But by his sophomore year in high school the family decided that the recurring cycle should end. Hovila and his parent agreed that the next concussion would be his last as a basketball player. Hovila was 90 seconds from extending his basketball career beyond the opening game of the conference schedule. An elbow to the head during a scrum for a rebound off of a missed free throw was the final blow, although Hovila didn’t know it at the time. He remembers the sharp pain he felt shoot up the right side of his skull, calling it “one of the worst pains I had felt.” But it didn’t cause an immediate headache or dizziness. “I finished the game.” It wasn’t until more than 90 minutes after the game that Hovila started to experience concussion symptoms. “I couldn’t even get off the couch by myself,” he said.

Beyond basketball “I’m still dealing with a lot of the symptoms,” Hovila said. Years of experience have helped Hovila learn how to manage and cope with the effects of his concussions, but he grew up without a peer group to share his experiences with. Classmates suffered concussions, too, but none of

them experienced the recurring effects of them as Hovila did. Hovila has had an outlet for support, however, the Brain Injury Association of Minnesota. Through their programs to help families affected by brain injuries Hovila met Kayla Meyer of New Prague, who had suffered a concussion in December 2009. While attending a Minnesota Wild game last October as guests of the Brain Injury Association, Hovila and Meyer discussed starting a peer support group. The idea was suggested in jest, but the duo realized they could fulfill a need by organizing the group, and proceeded to do so. Connections4Concussions is intended to provide youth and young adults who have suffered concussions and mild traumatic brain injuries with opportunities to learn from each other, and find encouragement and support. Their group will also provide caregivers, family members and friends opportunities to discuss their challenges in a separate setting. The inaugural meeting attracted 10 students, with the Hovila and Meyer families discussing their experiences and the need for the support group. The group will meet at 6 p.m. on the fourth Tuesday of each month at Penn Lake Library, 8800 Penn Ave. S. The March 27 meeting will include two speakers from the Brain Injury Association. Information about the group is available online at go.to/c4c.

At left, RHS students working the DECA store use teamwork to accommodate the onslaught of customers each lunch period and after school. New for the store this year is a chart hanging behind the counter that delineates their roles. Some will work the register, some will work on other tasks like stocking. DECA advisor Dean Breuer, who helps students run the store, pops in and out to monitor the action. Below, DECA members man their posts as fellow students rush in to stock up on snacks and beverages that will carry them through the rest of the day. RHS has vending machines available, but the school has offerings not found in the machines, sometimes at lower cost, said Dean Breuer, the RHS DECA advisor who helps the marketing students run the store.

(Photos by Andrew Wig – Sun Newspapers)

Store FROM PAGE 1 with four other schools in the state, received “gold certification” last month from the organization, demonstrating proficiency in a dozen categories, from accounting to employee training to health code adherence. It was the first time RHS’s store received the honor. Because make no mistake, DECA teacher-advisor Dean Breuer says, Spartan Avenue is run just like a business. Moving from the tiny ticket booth near the school auditorium into the grand-by-comparison room, the Richfield DECA participants handled everything themselves, Breuer said. They decided on the layout, picked out the candy counters, selected the vendors, and chose the store’s product assortment, anything any entrepreneur would handle. And the store is entirely self-funded, Breuer noted, with profits reinvested back into the store.

But Spartan Avenue isn’t all about the money. “The store is not simply a monetary vehicle,” Breuer told the Richfield School Board when the certification was announced. “It’s an extension of the classroom.” Last week Lady Gaga piped in on radio station 101.3 during the lunch hour as students crowded the counters. They watched the flat-panel screens hocking special offers as they weighed their options: Spartans hoodie or a long sleeve T-shirt, Vitamin Water or Powerade, Spicy Sweet Chili Doritos versus Flamin’ Hot Cheetos, which is reportedly the runaway favorite among all the offerings. About 120 to 150 student-customers pour into the living-room-sized space during each of two lunch periods, served by students like Nicole Krossin. The senior said she was kind of shy before joining DECA and beginning work in the school store, but after enhancing her customer service skills at her aunt’s thrift store in Lonsdale, Minn., over the summer, things have STORE: TO NEXT PAGE

Student-workers at Spartan Avenue, the Richfield High School store, work feverishly as students flood in during a lunch period last week. There has been much more space to accommodate the demand for the chips, beverages and school apparel since the store moved into the former teachers lounge last fall. (Photo by Andrew Wig – Sun Newspapers)

Store FROM PREVIOUS PAGE changed. “I was actually surprised at how much I excelled here,” she said. “I upgraded my people skills.” She and learned how to better communicate, and the subtleties of the art, like how to raise her voice over the din of dozens of clamoring teenage consumers. “Communication is one of the toughest things, especially in the middle of a rush,” Krossin said. The new space allows for more room and hence more noise, but it beats the ticket booth, said RHS DECA President Ridwan Ahmed. “Our customers weren’t able to see the merchandise,” the senior said. That selection has been expanded with the extra space this year, and the

young marketers have ventured outside the store, taking a cue from their full-fledged supermarket counterparts and offering samples as they gain insights into the consumer mind and pick up real-world skills. “I think I’m getting stronger and stronger,” senior Brenda Portillo said, noting her improving public speaking, people skills and professionalism, while many younger RHS students are “worried about making it to class on time.” Portillo holds down two actual jobs, at Embassy Suites at the airport and the restaurant, Q. Cumbers. That’s how she makes money, but the student store is more to Portillo. “We’re basically like family,” she said. “We’re all here to work and it’s something we care about and it’s something we take pride in.” Spartan Avenue is open for portions of each RHS lunch period, and after school.

Hampton FROM PAGE 3 Foundation March 17-18 at the Body Mind Life Expo, taking place at the Minneapolis Convention Center. The foundation’s mission is to promote physical activity by paying athletics fees for underprivileged children and their families, while bringing in nutritionists to help those families achieve a healthy diet, Hampton said. While that aim continues, Hampton’s newest endeavor is the second iteration of what seems an oxymoron: a fitness resort, where people will use their vacation time to endure 6-8 hours of exercise a day while adhering to strict diets. And they will cross the Pacific to do so, as headbands replace leis in Oahu, Hawaii at Hamilton’s U 1st Fitness, which he is establishing with the help of a former “Biggest Loser” production assistant and his daughter, SunShine, who competed on “Biggest Loser” along with her father. U 1st Fitness is housed at Turtle Bay

www.minnlocal.com – Thursday, March 8, 2012 – Richfield Sun-Current

Resort on the island’s north shore. The other U 1st Fitness location has been up and running for a year in Houston. The new location, aside from the more vacation-like locale, will mirror the Houston program, catering to people of diverse fitness levels, from 400pounders to those who simply want to firm up. Preliminary market research showed strong demand for the service, garnering “just a huge response,” Hampton said. But he admits, it is not cheap. Although prices are yet to be finalized, a trip to the fitness resort would cost about as much as any Hawaiian vacation. This is the reason for the Wellness Foundation, Hampton said, and the reason he collects corporate donations on the speaking circuit, from which he makes nothing himself. A healthy lifestyle can cost money, and “everybody deserves the right to be healthy,” Hampton said by phone from Hawaii last week, where he was setting up his fitness resort. Hampton has spread his message across the country, but the focus of the

Wellness Foundation begins at home. “I want to start in my own back yard,” Hampton said. “I want to help Minnesota first.”

Life before — and after — “Loser” Hampton says his motivational speaking actually has very little to do with weight-loss, per se. Instead, he speaks on the issues everyone faces like finances, stress, health and marriage. “Four-hundred-and-twenty pounds is a product of something else going on in your life,” said Hampton, recounting his “Biggest Loser” experience and his realization, as he shed the pounds, that he wasn’t the person he projected to the world. He calls his former self a “clown.” “I was smiling. I was happy and jubilant. That was a façade,” he said. “At 420 pounds I was no where near as happy as where I am now. I didn’t think I had a problem at 420 pounds. You always find a way to get around things, and that’s what I was doing.”

But getting around was the problem. “It was all I could do to get up and go to work and come back home,” Hampton said. Now, his wife, Sarah, is doing all she can to keep pace. “It’s like a fulltime job for me to kind of keep up with O’Neal,” she said by phone while in Hawaii with their husband, as they celebrated their 28th wedding anniversary in addition to taking care of the fitness resort business. The anniversaries are sweeter now. It used to be, when they went to the movies, Sarah would drop her husband off at the theatre’s entrance before going off to park. In those days O’Neal, an avid Twins fan, would stay away from the ballpark altogether. “He couldn’t fit in the seat,” his wife said. Now they have season tickets, and the first game O’Neal attended after losing the weight, SunShine threw out the first pitch. “It’s just things like that that have really changed our lives, that’s amazing,” Sarah raved. “It’s a wonderful life.” For the Hamptons, that’s life since “Loser,” and O’Neal keeps moving. “My dance card is filled,” he said.

Richfield Sun-Current – Thursday, March 8, 2012 – www.minnlocal.com

Lyndale FROM PAGE 1 funding uncertainties announced Tuesday, Feb. 28, during a special work session at Richfield Municipal Center. A previous plan called for Life College, a school that teaches life skills to functionally disadvantaged post-high-school students, to move into a 5-6 story, 35-40-unit mixed-use building on the northeast corner of the property, along Lyndale Avenue. The school would have occupied first-floor commercial space, with students living in the housing above. Life College bowed out when it was revealed the tax credit program funding the apartments required that the school expand its criteria for accepting students, Cornerstone President Colleen Carey explained to members of the Richfield City Council, Housing and Redevelopment Authority and Planning Commission. The plan would have taken advantage of $5-6 million in equity from the Federal Low Income Housing Tax Program to make the units affordable, but now that Life College is out, in question is what kind of units will make up the apartment building. Under the life College plan, the building would have been completely comprised of units considered “affordable” by

the Minnesota Housing Finance Agency, a prospect some community and city council members have been primed to fight. That, because of the ongoing controversy surrounding another developer’s plan to replace the vacant Richfield city garages with an apartment building called Pillsbury Commons that, should it gain approval, would be comprised completely of affordable housing units. Detractors of building large blocks of affordable housing, as opposed to a model that more widely spreads out lower income residents, say it is detrimental to the tenants and the surrounding neighborhood for a number of reasons, including lower property values and higher crime rates. With Life College gone from the picture, Cornerstone Group has not deviated from the 100 percent affordable housing route, which would still use the federal tax credit program for funding. “Our intent in our original conversation with you guys is that that front (northeast) building would have commercial on the first floor and affordable housing above,” Carey told commissioners and council members, “so at the moment, I’m not proposing we change that.” Another planned apartment building, to stand six-stories-tall, with 70 units on the northwest corner of the property, is planned to be a mixture of 20 percent affordable, and 80 percent market rate

housing. While Carey said technically, the plan all along called for all units to be affordable, that was not how Councilmember Fred Wroge viewed it. To call the would-be student housing affordable would have been like “saying the dorms over at the University of Minnesota are affordable housing. It was never going to be affordable. It was for students of Life College,” he said. Wroge echoed the cries of the Pillsbury project’s opponents, deeming that a mixture of affordable and market rate housing “is going the best thing for Richfield. … I think that’s great for everybody. I think it does all kids of good things.” Carey agreed on principle. It would be ideal, she said, “to have the affordable housing mixed in amongst all the units. The reality of the way that it gets financed right now is that that is not possible.” Investors either want to purchase affordable housing tax credits, or want to invest in market-rate developments, not

She devoted her life to her children and teaching high school students. A funeral service took place on January 25, 2012 at Hosanna! both, Carey said. Changing the make-up of the Lyndale units is still possible, she added, but if that’s the case, then “we’re going back to square one in terms of financing the project.”

The vision The mood was less contentious as planners laid out their vision for Lyndale Gardens. Staying for certain is the current Lyndale Garden Center building and the slanted glass roofs of its greenhouse. The surrounding grounds will be radically altered, and according to planners. Plans call for “loops and loops and loops of trails,” said Bruce Jacobson of Cunningham Group, the architectural firm designing the Lyndale Gardens grounds. Various sculptures may be incorporated into the environment, which will be about “immersion, exploration and splash,” Jacobson said. Near Richfield lake, which borders the property, may be a 90-foot-diameter central events circle to be used for performances and festivals, a space that could be flooded in winter for ice skating. Jacobson envisions a canopy of lights spread over the area. “Throughout the site we are bringing a very artful gesture,” Jacobson said. Think canopies, trellises crawling with vines, ornaments and other fanciful touches. And for the centerpiece, “maybe there’s something that’s a real icon,” Jacobson said, “something that lights up and draws you to the place.” These plans, however, are as yet vague, because the vision depends on money, and how much there will be is uncertain. The Cornerstone Group is hoping two grants to come through, one to the Metropolitan Council and one to Hennepin County. They expect to hear news on that front in April. Failure to receive the grants would mean a scaling-back of the plans for the grounds. Not all in attendance were enthralled by the vision anyway. Doris Rubenstein, “speaking as a neighbor to the project,” had concern for herself and others regarding the possibility of concerts and loud events at the new space. “One of the things that’s so wonderful about living here is the quiet we have on the lake,” she said. She also cautioned developers that early morning flight paths arcing directly over the site could deter renters. “You’re going to have people watching these those planes fly over and you can read Delta and Sun Country on the bottom of those planes. This is a problem,” she said. Nevertheless, the developer hopes to begin construction on Lyndale Gardens this fall. “There’s a whole bunch of steps between now and fall,” Carey said, “but I think we’re on track for that.”

Spartans place fourth in state Class A swim meet Richfield swimmers break three school records BY GREG KLEVEN – SUN NEWSPAPERS Richfield swimmers picked the right time to peak. The Spartans broke three school records while placing fourth in the state Class A meet March 2-3 at the University of Minnesota Aquatic Center. St. Thomas Academy won its 10th state swimming title in 14 years, scoring 330 points. Monticello finished second (204) and Breck/Blake placedthird (193), only four points ahead of Richfield (189). “Our guys swam very well at state and had an amazing day in the prelims on Friday,” said Richfield head coach Marc Hamren. “We finished with 189 points and added more points from the seeds through the finals than any other team at state.” Richfield’s 200-yard medley relay

team broke a school record with a second-place time of 1 minute, 36.36 seconds. Members of that relay are Andy Petersen, Max Hamilton, Duncan Pederson and Matt Graham. The Spartans’ 200 freestyle relay team of Petersen, Pederson, Eid and Graham placed third in a schoolrecord 1:27.85. Pederson achieved another schoolrecord time in the 100 butterfly. He placed sixth in 53.41 seconds. Richfield added valuable points in the 200 individual medley. Petersen finished third (1:57.80) and Pederson was fourth (2:00.13). Hamilton placed sixth in 2:03.20. Hamilton had a fifth-place time of 58.72 in the 100 breaststroke. Petersen was ninth in that event in 1:00.69. Eid claimed a bronze medal in the 200 freestyle in 1:45.67. Spartans survive section semifinal jinx Richfield girls defeat Waconia 72-61 to reach basketball tourney finals BY GREG KLEVEN - SUN NEWSPAPERS The section jinx is over for the Richfield girls basketball team. Richfield survived the Class 3A, Section 6 semifinals for the first time in three years. The Spartans suffered losses to Orono in the semis the past two seasons. Fourth-seeded Waconia gave topseeded Richfield an early scare in this year’s semifinals March 3 on the Spartans’ home court. The Wildcats led Richfield by four points at halftime, but the Spartans shook off jitters and a section hex and pulled out a 72-61 victory. The win sends Richfield (24-4) to the section title game against third-seeded Holy Family Catholic at 7 p.m. Thursday, March 8, at Minnetonka High School. Holy Family defeated No. 2 seed BenildeSt. Margaret’s 55-53 in the other semifinal game. “There was a great atmosphere and packed gym for our semifinal game against Waconia,” said Richfield head coach Lee Ann Wise. “We were uptight in the first half but calmed down in the second half. “We showed we don’t rely on just one

or two players. We had contributions from a number of girls in the win over Waconia.” Wise said she is looking ahead to the Spartans’ title game with Holy Family. “We played Holy Family in the second game of the regular season and won by 12 points,” said Wise. “But both teams have gotten much better since. “We know how to win but need to play our game and not panic against Holy Family.” Richfield had impressive performances from many players during its 11-point semifinal win over Waconia. Spartan junior point guard Jessica January turned in her usual All-State effort, finishing with 26 points and 10 steals. But January had plenty of support. Hailey Lindblom came through with 12 points, nine rebounds and six steals. She made all eight of her free throw attempts. Bry Guyton contributed 10 points and six rebounds. Hannah Wise added eight points, eight rebounds and eight assists. Sierra Ford-Washington had six points and six rebounds. Leah Barnes scored six points and Taylor Moore finished with four points. Richfield opened the playoffs with a 49-33 victory over eighth-seeded Orono Feb. 28 at home. January scored 19 points and Guyton finished with 12. Ford-Washington scored nine points.

Rampage trio makes state appearance Richfield’s Dyer wins one of three matches at 285 pounds Three members of the Richfield/Edina Ramage co-op wrestling team participated in state competition March 2-3 at Xcel Energy Center in St. Paul. Richfield senior Mike Dyer and junior Chandler Arredondo wrestled in the Class 2A portion of the tourney. Dyer won one of three matches at state. He lost 6-2 to Brient Pokornowski of DasselCokato in his first-round match at 285 pounds. But Dyer came back in wrestlebacks to beat Chase Kammerer of Chisago Lakes 7-5

before getting pinned by Zach Gibson of MAHACA. Dyer finished his senior season 35-5. Richfield junior Chandler Arredondo was pinned by Roosevelt Austin of Sauk Centre/Melrose in a 195-pound first-round match. Arredondo concluded his season 19-8. Edina senior James Lettow wrestled in the state Class 3A individual tournament. He lost 10-7 to Brandon Strong of Minneapolis South in first-round action at 132 pounds. Lettow finished 30-8. Apple Valley won the state Class 3A team tournament March 1 and Simley was the Class 2A champion. – Compiled by Greg Kleven

Four Spartan players scored in double figures – Deshawn Jones (13 points), Jared Noonan (13), Lorenzo Evans (11) and Shawn Bear (11). Richfield fared better in two games earlier last week. The Spartans defeated crosstown rival Holy Angels 88-83 Feb. 29. “Our kids are always up for this rivalry game against Holy Angels,” said McMillan. “We played solid basketball down the stretch.” Richfield demonstrated scoring balance again in the victory over the Stars. The Spartans’ leading scorers were Bear (20 points), Eric Jimson (16), Noonan (15) and Marcellis Beard (13). Richfield’s defensive effort paid off during a 92-61 victory over Simley Feb. 27. “We played tenacious defense and forced 11 turnovers,” said McMillan. “We did a nice job moving the ball around offensively.” Richfield almost had five players score in double figures. Noonan led the way with 21 points. Dan Beyel and Bear scored 14 points each. Octavius Harris contributed 10 points. Deshawn Jones had eight points.
