High school hosts open house for new multi-use field BY BILLIE JO RASSAT SUN NEWSPAPERS They only broke ground on June 10, just after the last days of school, but now students, families, teachers and the administration of the Richfield Public Schools can smile with pride at their new multi-functional outdoor field at Richfield High School. In honor of all of the hard work, sacrifice and now satisfaction, at 7 p.m., on Sept. 1, during the Richfield varsity football game, the district will host an open house for the community to witness firsthand the improvements the new field has brought to the district. “A quality city deserves a quality district,” Supt. Dr. Robert Slotterback said. With a free admission provided by the district, the community will be able to enjoy the first football game of the season, according to Slotterback Also that day, Richfield High School will be holding their school open house from 5-7 p.m., for the families of students at the high school to visit with teachers, see class-

Only one item was on the agenda — to consider the proposed sale of land to Wellington Management Inc. and the inclusion of land in Wellington’s development plans. At the city council meeting on Aug. 9, the council approved a planned unit development plan of the former Kmart site, to be developed by Wellington Management. That development includes a parcel of land, official labeled

MTV trainer helps Richfield woman BY BILLIE JO RASSAT • SUN NEWSPAPERS In an effort to lose weight, one Richfield woman sought out a famous personal trainer. Tara Kingsley, 47, has struggled with her weight most of her adult life. After her mother died from heart problems stemming from weight issues, Kingsley knew it was time to make a change. “I know my genetics will be a factor and I don’t want a drawer full of medications because of my weight,â€? Kingsley said. With Kingsley’s love of reality television and bond with the reality weight loss programs she watches, Kingsley
spent a month locating local personal trainer Nick Hudson, who was featured as the trainer in an episode of MTV’s “I Used to be Fat. “I liked the way he related to the girl who just lost her dad, Kingsley said. The season finale episode featured a teenager named Kelly from Faribault, Minn. According to Hudson, Kelly struggled emotionally with her fathers passing and those emotional conflicts resulted in Kelly’s weight gain. “It ended up being a very emotional episode. Over the summer we shared a lot with each other, Hudson said. After working on weight loss seven TRAINER: TO NEXT PAGE

Trainer FROM PREVIOUS PAGE days a week, in the summer months of 2010, Kelly lost 50 pounds and began college in the fall at the University of North Dakota at 135 pounds. With Kingsley’s recent loss and the way Hudson dealt with Kelly, Kingsley knew she found the right trainer for her. “He pushed her [Kelly] and he was compassionate when he needed to be and that is what I liked,” said Kingsley. Hudson is based out of Success Personal Training in Maplewood and, with Kingsley coming from Richfield three times a week for one hour sessions, both have had to make a commitment to Kingsley’s success. “She is very motivated, but she has had bad education about healthy living,” Hudson said. Kingsley’s routine consists of squats, lunges, biking and running, the body weight type of activities, according to Hudson.

“When she throws her weight around she will lose more,” than if she was to use weights, Hudson said. Hudson focuses Kingsley’s sessions on teaching her the functional things she can do in her daily life like resistance training and stepping on different levels of boxes, he said. “The thing that sets me apart from other trainers is that I don’t expect to see the body image change before I see a performance change,” Hudson said. Hudson times every bike ride and every run to make sure improvement is always being met. Then and only then, Hudson states, physical results will follow. With a goal of 75 pounds in six months, at the time of the interview Kingsley had lost more than ten pounds after completing only five sessions with Hudson. “It has all been a struggle, but now I can say I am in the right place emotionally,” Kingsley said. Loaded ballot for fall: BY BILLIE JO RASSAT • SUN NEWSPAPERS Come the election, on Tuesday, Nov. 8, the ballot for the Richfield School District will be packed with names of school board candidates and a new referendum proposal. When the office closed at 5 p.m. on Aug. 16, fifteen affidavits were filled for the three opening school board seats. The Richfield residents looking to fill the three seats include Brian Lematta, Monica Holl Petrov, Scott Christensen, Sharon Christensen, Will Berend, John Ashmead, Amy Cossette, Deb Etienne, Woody Duvlea, Chris Williams, Zack Olson, Teresa Kruse and Christine Maleck. Only incumbents Peter Toensing and Todd Nollenberger have decided to run for reelection. Supt. Robert Slotterback said at the school board meeting on Aug. 15, when there had only been 12 affidavits filed at that time, that it is wonderful to see the community wanting to get involved. Also during the meeting, the board
members present unanimously — Boardmember John Easterwood was not present — voted to approve a resolution that would revoke the existing referendum and approve its replacement with a new referendum. “The referendum will be asking the community to revoke the present levy and replace it with what the levy currently is plus $119 more,” said Michael Schwartz, business manager for the district. The important thing to remember is that a house worth more or less than $185,800 would pay more or less than $119, said Schwartz. The question to be on the Nov. ballot will read as: “The board of Independent School District No. 280 (Richfield) has proposed to revoke $301.40 per pupil of the school district’s existing referendum revenue authorization and to replace that authorization with a new authorization of $717.40 per pupil. The proposed referendum authorization would be applicable for ten years otherwise

revoked or reduced as provided by law.” The community would then either selects ‘yes’ or ‘no’ and by selecting yes it would be voting for a property tax increase. If a new levy were adopted, the projected fund would bring 1.9 million dollars into the Richfield school system, according to Schwartz. During a special work session on Aug. 8, Slotterback said that the district has cut all that it can from activities, maintenance and administration that the only thing left would be to cut people and increase class size. While a new and increased referendum would not guarantee any more teacher layoffs it would help during the economic crunch, said Slotterback. The projected increase to class size, should the referendum not pass, would be an additional six students, with a targeted 30 students per class in Kindergarten through second-grade, with more in the higher education classes, according to Slotterback. The members of the Richfield
School Board did not come to the decision to revoke and replace the referendum lightly. Toensing began the special work session, dedicated to discussion and getting as much information about the impact to the community a new referendum would bring, with saying, “There a lot of points of agreement and a lot of points of disagreement in this matter.” In the end the board agreed that they needed to focus on the impact of and to minimize any more cuts to the Richfield district budget. “We are on the right track to use this money wisely,” Boardmember Tom Flood said. The next step the school board has from now until the election is to properly educate the community about the new referendum proposal and the benefits it will bring to Richfield, said Boardmember Sandy Belkengren. “It is our responsibility to observe, protect and enhance our schools,” Toensing said.

The day the war came home It’s been a few months since my previous visit, but last week I found myself driving up to a church I’ve been very familiar with for years. From baptisms to confirmations to weddings — including my own — I’ve often been back to that same church to celebrate numerous joyful and happy occasions with family and friends. This was the first funeral. I cannot and will not claim a close friendship with the depart-
DANIEL CALLAHAN Richfield Sun-Current Managing Editor ed. To do so would be a disservice to his memory. At best, I can say we were childhood buddies. It was difficult to find parking, and I ended up walking a while to the church. Over the past decade, I’ve been
lucky enough to never have to go to one of these funerals. But I can say with absolute certainty that, after 10 years, the wars our country is engaged in came home. I can’t pretend the conflicts overseas are just political maneuvering anymore; war means heroism and it means sacrifice. I know this is the point where I am supposed to make an argument for or against the use of military force in other countries. You, the readers, might expect me
to use this tragedy as an example of whatever “agenda” I might have. But, that's just something I'm not going to do. This is a time to remember those who serve or who have served and honor them for that reason alone. Forget the politics, forget pushing for drawdowns or surges, and remember that those things mean people – people who are willing to stand up and serve their country regardless of the cost.
LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Volunteers make it happen for Arc To the editor: The Twin Cities is in the news for leading the nation in volunteering. This generosity comes as no surprise to those of us at Arc’s Value Village Thrift Stores and Donation Centers. Richfield has been home to the first Arc’s Value Village since 1982. The store opened with a handful of committed volunteers who wanted to generate ongoing financial support for services for children and adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities and their families through the organization now known as The Arc Greater Twin Cities. Richfield’s enthusiastic and committed volunteers are one reason that Arc’s Value Village recently achieved a milestone of more than one million volunteer hours donated over the last three decades. Volunteers, passionate about the work they do to ensure success for The Arc, provide nearly 40 percent of the hours worked at the stores. Their enthusiasm spreads to donors and customers and has paid off with more than
18 million dollars of program support since 1982. If you’d like to join this fun and productive team, stop by the store at 6528 Penn Ave. S., call Volunteer Development Manager Molly Lindblad, 952-915-3652, or visit arcsvaluevillage.org. We are so grateful to our volunteers! Jeanne Kelley-Rosengren Manager, Arc’s Value Village Richfield
New principle’s experience! To the editor: I am writing in response to the Aug. 18 letter to the editor concerning the new principal at Richfield High School, Joshua Fuchs (“Principal’s experience?” July 18). The authors of the letter, Mr. and Mrs. Griffin, were “appalled” at the background of Mr. Fuchs. What is equally appalling is the manner in which they chose to address their concerns, publicly smearing a district they claim “serves the community well” and an administrator who has been on the job fewer than six months and who, to my knowledge, hasn’t made any critical
mistakes. Having lived in the district for ten years and attended both School Board and Superintendent’s Parent Advisory Council meetings, in addition to serving as PTA president at a district school, I have had many interactions with district personnel. Richfield should be proud of the professionals we have at the district office. They are intelligent, thoughtful, creative and forward thinking. They have also worked incredibly hard at retaining Richfield students and increasing enrollment as a whole. I am confident that the decision to hire Mr. Fuchs was properly vetted, and that he was the best candidate for the job. Personally, I am very excited, given the recent departure of administrators across the district that Mr. Fuchs wanted to move halfway across the country and come to Richfield. A divisive, uninformed letter such as the one Mr. and Mrs. Griffin wrote displays exactly the opposite kind of community relations we want in Richfield. There isn’t a school district around that announces the salary of a principal.
Many of the other simple questions they asked could have been handled by a quick phone call to Supt. Slotterback, or a five-minute Internet search. Publicly inferring that the district did not do its due diligence undermines the public perception of the district, and could influence families not “choosing to live in a community.” How do all the 33 year-old readers of the Sun Current feel about the assertion that since Mr. Fuchs is young and short on experience, he is incompetent for his job? Should I question my young dentist or doctor’s skill level just because they are younger than me? Since when are age and experience the only factors leading to expertise in one’s craft? Shame on the writers of the Aug. 18th letter and especially shame on the Sun Current for publishing an uniformed letter that bordered on libel. There are many people working hard to better Richfield Public Schools and many families who believe in the district. Let’s focus on the positive direction the district is moving and give Mr. Fuchs a chance. LETTERS: TO NEXT PAGE

Richfield man sentenced in deportation case In St. Paul, Judge Magnuson sentenced Jose Manuel Ovalle-Garcia, 32, of Richfield to 41 months on one count of illegal re-entry after deportation. He was indicted on Jan. 19, 2011, and pleaded guilty on April 5, 2011. In his plea agreement, Ovalle-Garcia admitted that on Dec. 30, 2010, he was found illegally in the U.S. after having been deported to Guatemala.
His deportation followed a 2002 Hennepin County conviction for criminal sexual conduct in the third degree. Ovalle-Garcia was most recently arrested on Dec. 30, 2010, by the Bloomington Police Department for providing a false name to police and driving without a license. He was identified as an illegal alien through ICE’s Criminal Alien Program.
The goal of CAP is to locate criminal aliens incarcerated in federal and state prisons, as well as in local jails, and prevent them from being released into the general population. Ovalle-Garcia was turned over to ICE’s Enforcement and Removal Operations on Jan. 4, 2011. This case was the result of an investigation by the Bloomington Police Department and ICE ERO.

respond to some of the questions posed in that letter. One question asked was, “Who made the final decision and job offer?” As superintendent it is my responsibility to recommend administrative hires. I have been a superintendent now for 16 years in three different districts. During that time I have hired 33 principals and directors. The selection process was questioned. We have a standard approach for hiring administrators. Before I recommend a potential hire to our Board of Education there are many steps candidates have to go through. There is a ‘paper screen,’ at which time applications and letters of recommendation are carefully read by a team of administrators. In this case we narrowed down
the 70 plus applications to 12. Our new high school principal then had to go through three rigorous interviews in front of three different groups that included parents, teachers, support staff and administrators. Extensive background checks were also done on all of the finalists. The writer of the letter questions the age of our new principal. I happened to be younger than our new principal when I first became a principal myself. And I know many excellent current administrators that were as young or younger when they were first hired for administrative positions. Age is a factor, of course, because it translates into experience. In this particular case our new principal has served six

At AirBroom Minnesota In Excelsior Can Help How does your chimney look? Are the bricks crumbling? Does it have White or Black exterior staining? Are you afraid to use your fireplace because you’re not sure how safe it is? When was the last time you used it? The professionals at AirBroom Minnesota Fireplace and Air Duct Cleaning in Excelsior can restore both your confidence and your chimney. Did you know that water causes more damage to masonry chimneys than fire? Your chimney, unlike other parts of your house, is constantly exposed to the elements. They are generally constructed of brick, mortar, tile, steel, and iron. All of these materials suffer deterioration as a result of prolonged contact with water. Freeze and thaw cycles so familiar here in the Twin Cities cause stress on the chimney. Water that has penetrated expands and contracts. Left unchecked it will cause interior and exterior damage to your home and masonry chimney. Some of the damage that can be caused includes: 1) spalled and broken exterior brickwork, 2) deteriorated masonry and metal firebox assemblies, 3) rusted dampers, 4) decayed mortar, cracked or missing flue liners, and in the worst case scenario damage to adjoining walls, ceilings, and woodwork. There are three main ways to prevent water damage. 1) Install a chimney cap. This is the most inexpensive measure to prevent water penetration to the flue and inside chimney elements. We sell and install locally manufactured caps for as little as $99. 2) Repair or replace a damaged chimney crown. The crown sits atop your chimney and covers and seals it from the flue liners to the chimney edge. Many chimneys are built with an inadequate crown constructed from common mortar mix. Mortar is not designed for and will not withstand years of prolonged moisture exposure without cracking and chipping which allows water to penetrate the chimney. A proper crown is constructed of a Portland
cement mixture and formed to provide an overhang drip edge. This assures the water will shed helping to prevent erosion in the mortar and brick of the chimneys surfaces. Keeping the crown “watertight” and shedding away from the sponge like masonry elements that the chimney is built of is the most important element to preventing deterioration. At AirBroom Minnesota we use the industry leading line of Saver products to build and repair chimneys. Use of these products allows us to pass on manufacturers material warranties of up to 15 years to our clients. 3) Waterproof your masonry chimney and crown. Most masonry is porous and will absorb large amounts of water. Brick acts like a sponge absorbing water and wicking it to the chimney interior. Products we use are specifically developed for use as waterproofing agents on masonry chimneys. These are vapor permeable – which means they allow the masonry to breath out but not in. This allows water that has penetrated the chimney to escape while preventing additional water from entering from the outside. Non vapor permeable sealers commonly available should never be used because they trap moisture inside actually accelerating deterioration. We use a special permeable sealer with a 10 year consumer warranty to protect your chimney. Doing this before deterioration occurs can save you hundreds or even thousands of dollars in future repairs. Water damage to chimneys is usually a slow subtle process. The problem is generally not obvious until it has become quite serious. Although these prevention measures may cost you a few dollars they can save you a lot more by preventing large future masonry repairs. The Hartmann’s at AirBroom Minnesota in Excelsior offer free no obligation repair estimates in the Western Metro area. Call John, Jim, or Lynda today to arrange a free no obligation estimate. Visit us at AirBroomMinnesota.com or call us at 952.545.2254. As a bonus, repair jobs over $750 scheduled with us prior to August 31st receive $100 off when you mention this article.

Wellington FROM PAGE 1 Lot 2, Block 1, Heyman Addition, which resides on the corner of 66th Street and Lyndale Avenue that was believed to have been owned by the Richfield Housing and Redevelopment Authority. Upon further investigation into county tax records, the land is actually owned by the city of Richfield. Thus, due to time restraints in closing on the former Kmart site and the stipulation that Wellington must own control of all of the properties to be
included in their development plans, the Richfield City Council met to accept or extend a counter proposal to the Wellington’s letter of intent for purchase of the Lot 2. Using their legal rights to hold a closed session to discuss this matter, the council spent an hour in the new Bartholomew room at City Hall to confer amongst each other. Upon returning to the chambers, Councilmember Sue Sandahl, quickly gave the council’s counter proposal. The counter proposal included minor changes in the language stated in the letter of intent that include changing the words describing the type of building to

be put on Lot 2 from “corner retail building” to “restaurant retail building.” This change helps guarantee the city of Richfield that a restaurant will go into this proposed space, according to Sandahl. The other significant change to the letter of intent made in the counter proposal includes the sale of the land for $50,000, with a refund of $49,999 to be given back to Wellington upon completion of the development proposal, instead of the Wellington’s $1 cash offer for the land. Council members made this change to ensure that this land will have the
complete development project that Wellington Management says that they will do. Richfield Mayor Debbie Goettel said this property is very important to the community of Richfield and it is very important to the downtown area of Richfield that it is built upon. In response to the city’s counter proposal, Stephen Wellington Jr. said, “I think that this is a great idea and it give us extra incentive and it confirms to us how important this project is to you.” With the accepted changes to the letter of intent and the revisions made, both parties have 15 days to finalize a reasonable purchase agreement.

Director and Head Football Coach Todd Olson, the actual price tag came under the budgeted amount. The new multi-use field turf features lines for football, soccer, lacrosse and will be used by the Richfield Marching Band and as a physical education teaching station, according to Olson. Even though Richfield does not have a lacrosse team, the field was designed to provide for the community when the district is not using it, according to Olson. The interesting thing the district has set up is they will put a portion of the money generated from renting the field space out to the community towards future turf resurfacing needs, said Slotterback. The life span of the field tuff is estimated to be over ten years, and with the Minnesota climate the integrity of the field turf will far surpass the 10-year mark, according to Slotterback. During the regular season football game against North St. Paul High School, visitors and guests will enjoy performances from the Richfield Fall Performance Dance Team, Richfield High School Football Cheerleaders and a half-time program featuring a mini game played by the Richfield Football League. To make transportation easier on some senior members of the Richfield community, the district has reached out to Mainstreet Village Retirement, Pines, Age Well Village, Village Shores, Gramercy and City Belle retirement facilities with an offer of busing to and from the event. Before the game, the Richfield Quarterback Club will hold a tailgate party at 5 p.m. Sports teams began practicing on the field Aug. 19. The first official games played on the field will be at 5 p.m., Aug. 30, when the Richfield boy’s soccer team will play North St. Paul.

Unsung Legal Hero in Richfield, Bloomington Minnesota Lawyer recently named Teri Inderieden of Richfield, Jane Panzer of Richfield and Lisa Weyrauch of Bloomington Unsung Legal Heroes. The award honors outstanding efforts of those making notable contributions to the legal profession throughout Minnesota. As a paralegal and litigation manager at Skjold Parrington Business Attorneys, Inderieden has been instrumental in helping the firm build a robust, scalable and technology-driven paralegal practice in real estate-related litigation matters. For the past 29 years, Panzer has worked as an Accounts Payable Specialist for Lindquist and Vennum, where she is seen as an inspirational team member and the heart and soul of the firm. Weyrauch joined Robins, Kaplan, Miller & Ciresi L.L.P. as a paralegal one month before the 35W bridge collapse in 2007, and instantly became an integral part of the team helping the survivors and families of the victims. Her work comes with an added measure of compassion and
organization. “The Unsung Legal Hero awards the best and brightest who work in the legal field behind the scenes,” Vice President and Publisher of Finance & Commerce Inc. Steve Jahn said. “These are the people who provide valuable support for lawyers, who do the necessary leg work and who ensure the everyday operations of a law firm happen. They deserve their day in the spotlight and today is their day.” The thirty-two honorees will receive their award Wednesday, Sept. 21, at the Hyatt Regency-Minneapolis.

Richfield kickers look forward to a new season Spartan boys soccer tri-captains are Viera, Jungers and Zoellmer BY GREG KLEVEN • SUN NEWSPAPERS It was a struggle and learning experience for the Richfield boys soccer team a year ago as the Spartans went 1-15. But Richfield head coach Brad Johnson hopes a new season and a new field will turn around Spartan fortunes in 2011. Richfield has many returning letterwinners. The Spartans will try to take advantage of their speed and quickness to fly around the artificial turf recently installed at Spartan Stadium. “We are excited about this season and the chance to play on our new artificial turf,” said Johnson. “It will be a fasterpaced game on that turf. “Balls will have truer bounces but could also be harder to control because of the extra speed they will pick up on turf instead of grass.” Richfield coaches Johnson, Cory White (varsity assistant), Dave Clark (junior varsity) and Tyler White (ninth grade) greeted 55 players who came out for opening practice Aug. 15. The Spartans will rely heavily on senior tri-captains Mike Jungers, Alex Viera and Jordan Zoellmer. Jungers missed the last half of his junior season because of a broken toe. He will anchor the defense along with Zoellmer. Viera was Richfield’s leading scorer last season and earned all-conference and All-State honorable mention. Other Spartan returnees are senior midfielders Carlos Zuechuleno and Moses Mugwanja along with senior goalkeeper Eduardo Chavero Hernandez. Richfield is also counting on varsity help from junior midfielders Nate Luttenegger and Carlos Rodriquez along with sophomore forward Obsa Ali. “The strength of this year’s team is that our players have good overall skills,” said Johnson. “The addition of Ali to our offense should take some of the pressure off Viera. “We have several other players who may break into our lineup.” Richfield opens its 2011 season on the road against Minneapolis Washburn at 5

The Spartans return home to play North St. Paul at 5 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 30. “North St. Paul won the Classic Suburban Conference title last year and will be favored again with most of its play-
ers returning,” said Johnson. “Mahtomedi is always strong and Simley could be good as well.” Richfield will compete in Section 3A this season. That section field consists of DeLaSalle, Minneapolis Roosevelt, St.
Thomas Academy, St. Paul Academy, Trinity, Holy Angels, Blake and Richfield. “Our main goal is to make progress throughout the season and get a few more wins than we did a year ago,” said Johnson.

Richfield volleyball bolstered by six returning starters BY GREG KLEVEN • SUN NEWSPAPERS Six returning starters should help Richfield improve considerably on last season’s 4-19 volleyball record. The Spartans finished 3-11 in the Classic Suburban Conference. Richfield’s second-year head coach Brenda Holter expects improvement from her 2011 squad. “We return most of our starting lineup and are definitely a more experienced team,” said Holter. “We have great leadership in our setters Emily Christian and Jessica January, who will run the court and make smart offensive decisions. “We hope to back up our offense by being quick on defense. We are looking to be very competitive in our new Section 4AA tournament.” Richfield’s returning regulars are senior middle hitter Bryann Guyton, senior defensive specialist Ally Lutz, senior left-side hitter Courtney Wood, senior defensive specialist Shayla Jeffers, junior setter/hitter January and ninth-grade setter Christian. January was an all-conference selection last season and led the team in kills. Christian and Guyton received all-conference honorable mention. Richfield captains are Guyton, Wood, Jeffers and January. “Guyton is a strong blocker and Lutz is a solid passer,” said Holter. “Wood hits consistently and Jeffers is a good passer.” Richfield’s varsity team should get help from two newcomers – ninthgrade left-side hitter Eryn Miles and sophomore middle hitter Rachel Hilzinger. Holter said Hill-Murray and North St. Paul are two of the leading contenders for the Classic Suburban title. She expects Visitation to be a power in Section 4AA. Richfield will open its 2011 season

New Richfield head boys and girls cross country coach Marty Huberty has high expectations for his two teams this fall season. “I believe our girls team can win the Classic Suburban Conference title,” said Huberty. “We have all our runners returning from a fourthplace conference finish. “We need to close the gap between our second, third, fourth and fifth runners. The girls worked hard over the summer with many of them logging over 350-plus miles.” Senior Hannah Olson is the top Spartan returning runner. She was the conference medalist a year ago before placing third in the section and 31st at state. Olson received all-conference honors as did sophomore Erin Brault, who placed 12th in the league meet.

By: Ali Holman, co-owner of www.coreconditioningtraining.com I think we can all agree that eating is fun. Not only is it a way for us to socialize, reward ourselves and comfort ourselves, it also is the one area of fitness where people have the most trouble. Wouldn’t it be great to know that the choices you make are actually helping your fitness program? More importantly, wouldn’t it be even better to banish the word “diet” from your vocabulary? Chances are, if you are embarking on a “diet”, it will have a beginning and an end. The end is usually followed by slowly going back to old habits and ends you right back where you started. With our clients, we really encourage them to focus on a Lifestyle Change with room for “cheat meals” and realistic goals; which inevitably lead to lifelong results and without the emotional roller coaster of a diet.
Core/Conditioning Training’s List of “Fat Burning Foods”
eggs
low-fat dairy
Eggs are high in protein and low in calories. You may have heard all the warnings about eggs and your health: opt for eggwhites for the low-cholesterol, fatburning effect. Eggs also contain the vitamin B-12, a great supplement for breaking down fat cells.
Studies show that women who eat low-fat dairy products (such as non-fat yogurt and low-fat milk) three to four times a day lost 70 percent more fat than low-dairy dieters.
beans
oatmeal
Beans are one of the best sources of protein, fiber and iron. Some of the best beans to ear are: • Navy Beans • White Beans • Kidney Beans • Lima Beans
Oatmeal is loaded with soluble fiber, which helps reduce blood cholesterol by flushing those bad digestive acids out of your system. Skip the flavored oatmeals - you lose out on all the health benefits. If you must sweeten your oatmeal, do so by adding fruit.
olive oil
lean meats
Certain fats are good for you, and your body needs them. Olive oil is one of those “good fats.” It helps you burn fat and keeps your cholesterol down. One ounce of extra virgin olive oil contains about 85% of the daily value for monosaturated fat.
Search for lean meats - chicken (baked, broiled, grilled), fish and turkey - which are all high in protein. It is a good rule of thumb to consume at least one half-gram protein per pound of body weight each day. A chicken breast gets you well on your way, with about 22 grams of protein.
whole grains
interval training
Our body needs carbohydrates, despite what the fad diets tell you. Avoid processed carbohydrates such as white breads, bagles, pastas and white rice and look for whole grains that have not been processed and contain the fiber and minerals your body needs.
Interval training is defined as short, repeated bouts of intense exercise with minimal rest. You can burn major calories and get an all-over workout in less than 30 minutes. When you see people who are “cut,” chances ar they are partaking in interval training.
