On Sept. 13, Richfield Mayor Debbie Goettel called a special work session to order at 6 p.m. in the Bartholomew conference room in the Richfield Municipal Center. The topic of interest was the Menards development proposal for the remodel on the store and land at 77th Street and Nicollet Avenue. Also in attendance were council memWeekly bers Sue Sandahl, Pat Elliott and Tom Super Savings! Fitzhenry and members of the Richfield Planning Commission. Councilmember Fred Wroge was excused for prior commitments. COMMUNITY NOTES Blessed Trinity’s fundraising marathon to be held Oct. 7 Blessed Trinity Catholic School launched its annual marathon fundraiser Sept. 12. It will continue until the day of the marathon Friday, Oct. 7. The purpose of the marathon is to raise awareness of the need to financially support parochial education in order for it to

continue as an option for students. The marathon is Blessed Trinity’s most important fundraiser, bringing in over half of the necessary $110,000 fundraising for the school year. Fundraising is essential at Blessed Trinity — it is needed to balance our operational budget. Marathon Day at Blessed Trinity will be 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Penn Campus, 7540 Penn Ave. S., Richfield. In the first stage of the marathon students will complete difference service projects.

The kindergarten through fifth-graders will work at the Penn Campus to assemble lunches for the hungry in our community. They will make peanut butter and jelly sandwiches, bags of carrots and bags of trail mix. In addition they will clean pews for St. Richard’s Church as well as their own desks at the Penn Campus. The middle school students will clean pews at St. Peter’s Church and Church of the Assumption and will pick up litter around their buildings.

Next during the marathon all students will gather at the Penn Campus with their “Buddies,” older students that are paired with younger students to form mentoring relationships during certain school events, where everyone including the three Richfield Catholic parish priests will walk the Tiger Trail. After the walk, they will all be served a bag lunch and watch or participate in a faculty volleyball game, with a prayer service to end day. Info: 612-869-5200.

Every week the Rotary Club of Richfield holds a meeting at Champps in Richfield where the group lines up speakers from around the Twin Cities that present about anything from local non-profits, schools or businesses. On Sept. 15, Laura Barrett, co-owner of Barrett Lawn Care Inc. in Richfield, showcased her family business and provided many helpful lawn maintenance tips to the Richfield Rotary Club. Back in 1998 with just one truck and the passion for the outdoors of her husband, Eric Barrett, Barrett Lawn Care began in their home. Now the company features 16 employees serving as a fullservice commercial lawn and landscaping company helping the Twin Cities out of their office at 7524 Lyndale Ave., Richfield. With in their services, Barrett Lawn Care features trained professionals in landscape design, installation and maintenance; irrigation crews for installation and service; application specialist for fertilizing, weed control and turf pathogens, such as insects and fungus; and three lawn crews with specialization in commercial

properties according to Barrett. Next, Barrett talked about lawn care, landscaping and maintenance. “A lot of homeowners will call us with questions and we are always willing and able to help,” Barrett said. One issue often asked about includes the treatment of tree suckers, off-shuts of a tree that are often found at the base. As her recommendation, Barrett stated complete removal of any tree sucker is necessary, as they will leach the nutrients and energy from the tree. Removal results can lead to restoring the health of the tree trunk. Barrett’s next words of advice were to properly maintain shrubs and bushes. The best way to maintain them is to use very sharp pruners, once in the spring after the early growth boom and again in the fall. If the shrub is beginning to get very woody with little leaves, it may be time to think about replacing it, as the leaves will not re-flourish at this point according to Barrett. Thousands of words, very little reading They say a picture is worth a thousand words. I’m not a photographer, I prove that almost weekly. But sometimes I wish I had spent more than one semester of college learning the finer points of photography, because a good picture is much easier to compose than a 1,000-word story. When I began my journalism career I often heard it said that film is cheap, take plenty of photos. That’s very true, but nonetheless there was a practical limitation to how many photos you could take at any given event. Nowadays the only limitation to taking hundreds of photos at a high school football game or community festival is the size of the memory card in a digital camera. And if you take enough photos with the right camera and settings, by default you’ll end up with a poetic thousand words in stunning digital magnificence. When I see a great collection of historical photos, I have the utmost appreciation for the

work that was involved, as a photographer in the 1950s had technical limitations that the same photographer in 2011 wouldn’t have. So when I had a chance to see the photos of Irwin Norling, I was highly impressed. Norling’s photos, thousands of them, were compiled into the book “Suburban World The Norling Photos” a few years ago. The photos had been donated to the Bloomington Historical Society years ago, as they depict life in Bloomington, primarily in the 1950s and ’60s. I was loaned a copy of the book a few months ago and thoroughly enjoyed the historic look at Bloomington. Norling was successful for a couple of reasons. For starters

he took a lot of great photos in an era when cameras were more labor intensive than their modern day counterparts. But his technical skills were only part of the formula. As is noted in the forward of the book, one of the reasons for Norling’s success was the fact that he was there. He wasn’t a professional photographer who chased high paying gigs across the Twin Cities, he was a Bloomington man who tirelessly chronicled life in his hometown. Even if I lived in Bloomington I doubt I’d have access to some of the scenes Norling photographed. Besides community events and happenings, he periodically chased the police cars and fire trucks of Bloomington to the scene of a crime or fire. I’d be able to get a few decent photos at a crime scene or blazing inferno, but Norling’s photos are the work of a guy who knew the police officers and firefighters of the city on a personal level, and

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR A tale of two cities To the editor: I own one home in Edina and one home in Richfield that is currently being rented due to the low value with home sale prices across the country. This has given me the opportunity to deal with two city halls, two sets of city rules and officials. I would describe myself as preferring to go “under the radar” and a rule follower. Over the years as a working professional in the community, I have felt from time to time it is necessary to step up and voice concerns for the better of the city and residents. I personally have experienced a very big difference in how Edina officials respond to me versus Richfield officials. It makes a person wonder

whether or not it has to do with the higher income Edina residents supposedly have – is there more compassion in Edina? – or the fact that my home in Richfield is a rental. After all, typically neighbors and people in the community are not thrilled about rentals. I can tell you that my home in Richfield is praised by neighbors for its on-going appearance and maintenance. About two years ago I contacted Richfield city officials in writing and by phone about a late fee penalty for a landlord license. The late fee (higher than most credit cards and loan sharks) was 74 percent. I thought it was hurtful to residents and the city. To this day the 74 percent late fee penalty is the same with no closure. Giovanna Ingram Edina

Norling’s photos feature a variety of Bloomington events that you’d expect, such as parades and car accidents, yet it’s the people I don’t know from Adam – such as the grocery store owner, Bloomington Sun columnist and cahiers at a Chinese restaurant – that are as interesting to look at. The old cars, the 1950s era prices on the menu board at the Chinese restaurant and the old-fashioned hats atop a quartet of nurses standing bedside in 1957 are as entertaining to behold. I’m not a Bloomington history buff. I never will be. I’d be hard pressed to read 10,000 words about Bloomington’s history, yet I could spend hours reviewing photos from Bloomington’s past, and the time would fly by. If you have an appetite for nostalgia, get a copy of the book and read Norling’s pictures.

Gov. Dayton visits unusual suspects in Eden Prairie Talks economy, legislative session, Vikings stadium BY PAUL GROESSEL • SUN NEWSPAPERS He may be a Democrat, but they invited him, anyway. Gov. Mark Dayton visited Eden Prairie Chamber of Commerce members during a luncheon Wednesday, Sept. 14, at Olympic Hills Golf Club to talk about the economy and the role between private industry and government, among other things. The governor provided a recap of four economic summits across the state (with seven more to come), the proposed Viking’s stadium and thoughts on the recent legislative session and state government shutdown. In his state travels, some have said eliminate government at all levels and let the private sector work out economic problems, Dayton said. However, what he discovered during discussions with hospital officials in Fergus Falls serves as an example of how important it is to have good government with success in the private sector, he said. Dayton said hospital executives told him Medicare and further health care in Minnesota has made the difference between many hospital’s solvency and bankruptcy, since they have an increasing number of Medicaid patients. And, for every 10 jobs created in the health care industry, six private-sector jobs are created, he said, anecdotally confirmed by a new Fergus Falls Wal-Mart, which will employ 150 people. It’s also important to have strong educational-private industry relationships, whereby businesses can link with colleges, particularly vocational colleges, that are training people with the workforce skills they need. Dayton also recognized that the No. 1 tax problem businesses face is property taxes, since the state has shifted the brunt of the tax burden onto businesses, whose property taxes have gone up 75 percent over the last eight years, Dayton said. Overall, state economic health relies on a balance between government expenditures, tax sensitivity and efficiency in government spending – all while ensuring proper education investments are made. "Our future is about the brain power and then the focus of the education of your young people,” so they can be the entrepreneurs and productive employees of the future, he said.

Education funding/ legislative session When asked if the state will ever meet its financial obligation to schools (since it has shifted payments to school districts to help balance budgets), Dayton said he wanted to have long-term budget solutions rather than further delaying school aid payments and issuing bonds, repaid through future tobacco sales, to tackle the $5 billion deficit. Those school aid shift and bond sale was part of the compromise Dayton made with legislature to end the shutdown in July. Those solutions are part of the reason, he thinks, that the state’s bond rating was lowered, which could raise the cost of future borrowing. The delayed school aid means many school districts will have to borrow money in the mean time, but Dayton said the $50 increase in per-pupil funding from the state this year and another $50 bump next year should help most districts recoup any costs from borrowing money. Those $50 increases were also part of the July agreement. Dayton proposed a more long-term solution, taxing the top two percent of Minnesota earners, who according to a department of revenue analysis, pay a smaller percentage of income than other Minnesotans, Dayton said. Dayton said he was not happy with the compromise, but the shutdown needed to end. “Compromise means agreeing to things you don’t agree with,” Dayton said. When talking about the Republican majority legislature, with many new faces, the governor said he had never met a group of people who thought, “compromise was a weakness and intransigence a virtue.” “… If you're a grown up and you're responsible,” Dayton said. “You make decisions, then you take the responsibilities with the consequences of them, good or bad. And, I can disagree with people, and I can respect them. And again that’s democracy. “But, again, I have no respect for someone who insists on having it their way and then when it goes awry, tries to blame me or anyone else. That's unacceptable." After his speech, state Rep. Jenifer Loon, R-42B, said the governor’s comments about education funding were “right on” – nobody likes a shift in school aid payments. She also pointed out that 90 percent of the bill that passed to end the government shutdown was part of a legislative proposal that Dayton rejected before the shutdown, but accepted weeks later. Other leaders also agreed to things they did not agree with, Loon said, and she’s

hoping the impasse that resulted between a new governor and new legislators is avoided next session. She hopes issues can be resolved early in the session, before deal making reaches a “crisis point,” she said. “That’s what I’ve taken away from the session,” Loon said.

Vikings stadium proposal When asked about alternative locations for a new Vikings stadium (a “plan b” to the

proposed Arden Hills location) Dayton said he is not aware of alternate proposals. He is site neutral and only wants to make sure the Vikings stay in Minnesota, he said. He also doesn’t want to have any of the state’s general fund revenue going into the project. The Vikings have committed $420 million into the Arden Hills site, and Dayton speculated that commitment could reach $500 million for the estimated $1.1 billion project.

‘Democratic Visions’ lineup announced Journalist, columnist, author and adventurer Jim Klobuchar shares his perspectives on American politics during the current edition of “Democratic Visions.” In a three-part discussion with host Tim O’Brien, Klobuchar also shares anecdotes about campaigning with his daughter, U.S. Sen. Amy Klobuchar. The real and fictional figures in the satirical work of Star Tribune cartoonist L.K. Registration is now open for fall theater classes at Bloomington Theatre and Art Center. Theater teacher Jennifer Bingham-May will lead six-week youth acting classes that will help children explore character creation, speaking skills, improvisation and makeup techniques. The final class period will include a short performance for parents and friends. Youth acting classes are Saturdays, Oct. 15 to Nov. 19. Classes for ages 11-14 are 10 a.m. to noon. Classes for ages 7-10 are 12:30-2:30 p.m. The cost for the sixweek course is $75 for BTAC members, $82 for non-members. BTAC will also host a two-day children’s theater workshop in late October. The “Fall Break

Shakespeare” workshop will be led by professional Twin Cities actors and help children explore the stories and characters of William Shakespeare. The workshops are 9 a.m. to noon October 20-21. “Playing with Shakespeare” for ages 7-10 will give children the ability to learn about “A Midsummer Night’s Dream.” “Shakespeare Rocks!” for ages 11-14 will expose children to the music of Shakespeare’s language in a fun and physical way. For students ages 15-18, Twin Cities stage combat choreographer Adam Scarpello will assist with “Bard Battle,” an exploration of fight scenes from Shakespeare’s action-packed plays. process and his organization would make allowances if Richfield did as well. In addressing the policy issues, Richfield Community Director John Stark said other than policy issues the project would be a good fit for the city and city staff is very supportive. And when asked for advice on what could be done, city staff said that the best way to meet all of the requirements would be to make a policy change in the language that would allow Menards to do their expansion with a conditional use permit. Time is an issue for Menards, Berg said, and in order for the Richfield site to be next to expand, as Menards only expands one store a year, the plan needs to be completely approved by Jan. 1, 2012. However, according to city staff changing the language would be fairly quick, with only needing to pass two readings of the changes and than officially publishing it for 30 days. As a work session, no policies or votes were cast, but the Richfield City Council did agree to allow city staff to make the necessary language changes to make Menards development proposal a reality. “Make it a nice looking building and it will be a welcomed addition to the city,” Planning Commission Member Bob Hall said.

A few of the unmet zoning code standards in the Menards proposal are building facades over 200 feet in length facing a street must have two or more building entrances on the street, parking drives shall not be located between the main entrance and the street and developments shall implement an on-site pedestrian and bicycle circulation system. These issues are very important to the city, as Sandahl voiced concerns that the plan had inadequate pedestrian and biking access from Nicollet Avenue. Two members in the Planning Commission united in the concern for aesthetics and pedestrian safety on the side of the building along 77th Street. Richfield City Manager Steven Devich said he hope that the city did not lose site of how much work is being invested in moving the businesses to face 77th Street instead of Interstate 494. Listening to all of the concerns, Berg said, the plans could be a negotiation

PUBIC SAFETY Police Reports For the week of Sept. 4-10, the Richfield Police Department answered the following calls: Sept. 4 â&#x20AC;&#x201C; An officer stopped a vehicle near 77th Street East and Chicago Avenue South for a burnt out license plate light. The driver failed field sobriety tests and was arrested for third degree driving while intoxicated as he had one prior DWI conviction. The vehicle was impounded. In the area of 5th Avenue South and 70th Street East, an officer stopped a vehicle for speeding. The driver failed sobriety tests and was arrested for fourth degree DWI. The suspect was also charged with an open bottle violation. The vehicle was impounded An officer took a report of criminal sexual conduct and kidnapping that occurred near 66th Street East and Elliot Avenue South. The victim stated she was kidnapped at gunpoint, taken to an unknown location, sexually assaulted and then driven back to the area of her residence. Suspects are unknown at the time of the report. Sept. 5 â&#x20AC;&#x201C; On the 500 block of 78th

Street West and someone removed tires, stereo and wheels valued at over $4,000 from the victimâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s vehicle. The dashboard and lock were also damaged during the crime. Police dispatched to the area of 16th Avenue South and 63rd Street East on a report of a suspicious vehicle. The vehicle was occupied by three males and had been parked in the area for 45 minutes. The officer located the vehicle and spoke with the individuals. The officers were familiar with the rear passenger, who is frequently involved in criminal activities. One of the officers detected an odor of burnt marijuana and during a search of the passenger, the officer located one gram of marijuana in a plastic baggie and a homemade marijuana pipe. The suspect was cited for possession of drug paraphernalia and possession of a small amount of marijuana. Sept. 6 â&#x20AC;&#x201C; In the area of Cedar Avenue South and 74th Street East, an officer stopped a vehicle for speeding. The driver was later arrested for possession of cocaine and fleeing the scene. Sept. 7 â&#x20AC;&#x201C; Officers responded to the intersection of 5th Avenue South and 74th Street East regarding graffiti. The

officer saw multiple defacements of area stop signs. Photos were taken and it is unknown when the vandalisms occurred. Sept. 8 â&#x20AC;&#x201C; On the 7100 block of Cedar Avenue South a victim reported that they had been approached by an individual who asked for a ride. When the victim refused the suspect assaulted him with a knife and fled the scene. Sept. 9 â&#x20AC;&#x201C; In the area of 62nd Street East and Bloomington Avenue officer attempted to stop a vehicle for equipment violation. The drive fled at a high rate of speed. The pursuit was terminated and shortly after the vehicle was found crashed into a light pole. An officer reported to the area of 75th Street East and Stevens Avenue South on a report of a walking domestic assault when the officer observed an occupied vehicle. In the vehicle the driver was found to be in possession of a small amount of marijuana. The suspect was cited and released. Sept. 10 â&#x20AC;&#x201C; At the Short Stop at 7034 Cedar Ave. S., an officer responded to a verbal domestic assault. The male involved was arrested for violation of an order of protection.

High school students help collect coats for kids BY JONATHAN YOUNG • SUN NEWSPAPERS Students at Blaine High School will try to collect 500 winter coats for children in need this fall. Each year the Business Professionals of America class (known as BPA) at the high school coordinates a coat drive as part of the Coats for Kids campaign. Pilgrim Cleaners started the campaign 26 years ago to help families who couldn’t afford to buy winter coats. Eighteen years ago, Blaine High School became the first school to officially host a coat drive to support the campaign. Lana Rice teaches BPA at Blaine High School. “The students collect coats before school every day for two weeks,” she said. This year the school’s collection will run Monday, Sept. 26 through Thursday, Oct. 6. “We do it as a class,” Rice said. “It’s not necessarily and assignment. We do a lot of volunteer work through BPA.” Sometimes students go door-to-door asking for coat donations. Some go to garage sales and buy coats or ask for donations. Teachers and students at the school also donate.

Pilgrim then cleans the coats and gives them to local charities for distribution. Rice said the campaign won’t merely make an impact on the children receiving

the coats, however. It will also affect the students collecting them. “It makes them realize that there are a ton of people in need,” she said. She said it also help them to “always remember to give back to the community and volunteer.”

Blaine High School is only one of the schools participating in the Coats for Kids drive. According to Judy Sprague with Pilgrim Cleaners, Blaine High School has often donated more coats than any other school. “We’ve donated over 10,000 coats over the years,” Rice said. The school that collects the most coats this year will win a Subway party. Those who wish to donate coats can drop them off at Blaine High School or another participating school. They can also take them to any of the 25 Pilgrim Cleaners locations throughout the metro now through Saturday, Oct. 8. This year’s campaign is sponsored this year by Pilgrim Cleaners, Sun Newspapers, KARE 11, KFAN and Subway. The charities receiving coats are Sabathani Community Center, Sharing and Caring Hands, Ronald McDonald House of the Twin Cities, Catholic Charities of St. Paul and Minneapolis, STEP, CEAP, Lutheran Social Services and Hope for the City. Did you know that water causes more damage to masonry chimneys than fire? Your chimney, unlike other parts of your house, is constantly exposed to the elements. The crown sits atop your chimney and covers and seals it from the flue liners to the chimney edge. Many chimneys are built with an inadequate crown constructed from common mortar mix. Mortar is not designed for and will not withstand years of prolonged moisture exposure without cracking and chipping which allows water to penetrate the chimney. A proper crown is constructed of a Portland

cement mixture and formed to provide an overhang drip edge. This assures the water will shed helping to prevent erosion in the mortar and brick of the chimneys surfaces. Keeping the crown “watertight” and shedding away from the sponge like masonry elements that the chimney is built of is the most important element to preventing deterioration. At AirBroom Minnesota we use the industry leading line of Saver products to build and repair chimneys. Use of these products allows us to pass on manufacturers material warranties of up to 15 years to our clients. 3) Waterproof your masonry chimney and crown. Most masonry is porous and will absorb large amounts of water. Brick acts like a sponge absorbing water and wicking it to the chimney interior. Products we use are specifically developed for use as waterproofing agents on masonry chimneys. These are vapor permeable – which means they allow the masonry to breath out but not in. This allows water that has penetrated the chimney to escape while preventing additional water from entering from the outside. Non vapor permeable sealers commonly available should never be used because they trap moisture inside actually accelerating deterioration. We use a special permeable sealer with a 10 year consumer warranty to protect your chimney. Doing this before deterioration occurs can save you hundreds or even thousands of dollars in future repairs. Water damage to chimneys is usually a slow subtle process. The problem is generally not obvious until it has become quite serious. Although these prevention measures may cost you a few dollars they can save you a lot more by preventing large future masonry repairs. WHEREAS, the City has adopted the above referenced amendment of the Richfield City Code; and WHEREAS, the verbatim text of the amendment is cumbersome, and the expense of publication of the complete text is not justified. This ordinance makes the following changes to the City Code: allows community gardens as an accessory to an established institutional use (e.g. school, church); expands the districts in which animal kennels are permitted with conditions and allows outdoor relief areas provided that certain conditions are met; allows tattoo establishments in the mixed use – community and mixed use – regional districts; removes density prescriptions from the multi-family residential districts, as this is prescribed by the Comprehensive Plan; reduces commercial building setbacks adjacent to singleand two-family dwellings to equal that of the commercial parking lot setback of 15 feet; allows for reduced front setbacks for commercial buildings along arterial roads so long as a public entrance is provided; and establishes a maximum front setback of 60 feet for commercial buildings along arterial roads. BY GREG KLEVEN SUN NEWSPAPERS Richfield’s 1-6 record in boys soccer is deceiving, according to Spartan head coach Brad Johnson. “Our players have been competitive and are playing better each game,” said Johnson. “Our goals-against total is down from a year ago and the guys are working hard and making progress.” One of the Spartans’ tough losses came against St. Thomas Academy Sept. 15, where they fell 2-1 in overtime. Carlos Quechuleno scored Richfield’s goal in the loss. Jack Stallon tended goal for the Spartans. Richfield also played a strong Blake team tough in a 3-1 loss Sept. 10. Obsa Ali scored the Richfield goal with an assist from Ridwan Ahmed. Henry Sibley defeated Richfield 6-2 Sept. 8. Eduardo Hernandez and Stallon shared goalkeeping duties and combined for 25 saves. Alex Viera scored both Richfield goals. Viera scored the winning goal with an assist by Quechuleno in a 1-0 overtime victory over Mahtomedi Sept. 6. Defense propels Holy Angels to third straight win Stars blank Red Wing 36-0 in Missota Conference BY GREG KLEVEN • SUN NEWSPAPERS Defense was instrumental for Holy Angels in its third consecutive victory of the football season. And no defensive player performed better for the Stars than senior middle linebacker T.J. Patrias. Patrias had 16 tackles, four sacks and one fumble recovery for a touchdown as Holy Angels shut out Red Wing 36-0 Sept. 16. The Stars boosted their record to 3-0 while the Wingers are now 2-1. Holy Angels will try for another victory at 7 p.m. Friday, Sept. 23, at Chanhassen. “Our entire defense played extremely well against Red Wing, a team that threw over 40 passes,” said Holy Angels coach Ray Betton. “But Patrias had a great game and really knows how to get to the quarterback.” Holy Angels led 2-0 in the first quarter on a safety by defensive back Michael Price. The Stars added three scores in the second quarter by taking advantage of Red Wing miscues. Patrias returned a fumble 6 yards for a touchdown. Mikias Alipate ran 1 yard for another Stars score. Senior linebacker Aammir Freese returned a fumble 18 yards for another touchdown and Will Pagel added a conversion run as Holy Angels built a 22-0 halftime lead. Holy Angels added 14 points in the fourth quarter. Pagel scored on a 6-yard run and added a conversion run. Junior quarterback Sam Keis finished the scoring on a 1-yard run. Anthony Baysah was Holy Angels’ leading rusher with 94 yards on 16 carries. Pagel came through with 63 yards on 11 rushes. Keis completed four of nine passes for 76 yards. Holy Angels shifts its focus to Chanhassen this week. “Chanhassen has a 0-3 record but lost a couple of close games,” said Betton. “We can’t turn the ball over and commit penalties like we did offensively last week. “We still don’t know how good we can be.”

Now the Spartans would like to dampen Henry Sibley’s homecoming celebration. Richfield (1-2) will travel to Henry Sibley for a Classic Suburban Conference game at 7 p.m. Friday, Sept. 23. The Warriors are 0-3 after losing 21-0 to Simley last week. Richfield is trying to regroup after a 49-7 loss to Hill-Murray last Friday at Spartan Stadium. “We must go back to the drawing board this week against Henry Sibley,” said Richfield head coach Todd Olson. “We have to play with more consistency. “The outcome will be determined by which team wants to win more. But I have been pleased with the way our guys are trying.” Richfield had difficulty containing Hill-Murray’s potent passing attack last week. The Pioneers threw for more than 250 yards against the Spartans. “Hill-Murray’s football program has improved in recent years,” said Olson. “Hill-Murray reached the section finals last year for the third time in five years. “Hill-Murray used run-action fakes to set up its passing game against us.” Hill-Murray scored three times in the first quarter and expanded its advantage to 28-0 by halftime. Richfield’s lone touchdown came in the third quarter when Cam Dearing ran 36 yards for a score. Raheim Hampton kicked the extra point as the Spartans trailed 35-7 heading into the fourth quarter. The Spartan runners are making that goal become reality. Richfield placed third in boys competition at the Classic Suburban Conference meet Sept. 13 at St. Croix Bluffs near Hastings. The Spartans were fourth in the girls race. “We ran great,” said Huberty. “Next month, we should place higher at the conference championships at the same place against the same teams. “It was a perfect day for running at the last conference meet and the kids took advantage of the cool conditions by running fast and improved times.” Richfield scored 109 points in the boys team competition. Mahtomedi was first with 24 points. Jake Bauer was Richfield’s top runner in the 5,000-meter race in 18 minutes, 7 seconds.

Max Hamilton came in 19th (18:46) and Lucas Blanchard was 24th (18:42). Cal Bergen finished 26th (18:52) and Jake Beaudet was 27th (18:55). Other Spartan competitors were Jon Libra (32nd, 19:15), Spencer Bainbridge (36th, 19:24), Alex Brault (40th, 19:26) and Nathan Libra (50th, 20:01). More than 170 runners competed in the 5K race. Richfield’s girls cross country squad also had a successful day in the conference meet, scoring 97 points. Mahtomedi was the girls champion with 47 points. Hannah Olson of Richfield was medalist in the girls 4K race in 15:35. “Hannah raced great and smart,” said Huberty. “She looked relaxed and had good form. “Hannah won by eight seconds over second-place Sheelyn Sorensen of Tartan.” Richfield’s Erin Brault was 15th overall (17:22) and Sarah Nygaard finished 21st (17:47). Hannah Adams was 28th (18:48) and Leah Mohn placed 32nd (19:00). Sarah Schroeder was 46th (20:16) and Erica Strom finished 48th (20:25). Richfield runners will compete in the Roy Griak Invitational Saturday, Sept. 24, at the University of Minnesota Golf Course.
