Richfield College in Schools program giving merchant Richfield students a head start receives highest chamber honor BY BILLIE JO RASSAT SUN NEWSPAPERS

Richfield High School offers more to students than meets the eye — in a given year, a student can earn a total of 32 semester credits from the University of Minnesota for free. Through the College in Schools Program, Richfield students can get a leg up in their continuing education goals at no cost to themselves or their families. “The CIS program is a great way for students to learn about the expectation of college course work,” Richfield CIS Teacher Mike Harris said. “Also, it helps students have a better understanding of the options offered at college. The biggest obstacle of completing college in four years is the difficulty of selecting a major.” Richfield teachers Dave Boie, Matt Brown, Chris Kaus, Margaret Laboe, Chris Peterson, Elizabeth Zehnpfenning, Judy Schulte and Harris are CIS educators teaching courses such as Physics by Inquiry, Essentials of Human Anatomy and Physiology, Political Science, M a c r o e c o n o m i c s, Introduction to College

Including Richfield, over 120 schools in Minnesota participate in the CIS program such as Burnsville, Eagan, Edina, Eden Prairie and Hopkins High School. The greatest advantage to the CIS program over other college credit programs in high school, such as Advanced

Placement and International Baccalaureate, is students in Advanced Placement and International Baccalaureate earn scores that may or may not translate into college credit while successful completion of a CIS course will earn the student actual University of Minnesota credits. “I love getting credits for free. With college being so expensive, I need all the help I

can get. CIS courses help me get my general classes out of the way so I can get my degree faster,” Richfield High School student Madison Andrews said. Since 2002, Richfield has been a part of the CIS program, but to begin the program interested teachers had to apply and demonstrate that

And the winner of the 2010 Larry Farrington Award is… Timothy Carter, general manager of Richfield/Bloomington Honda. Since 1969, the Richfield Chamber of Commerce has been presenting the Larry Farrington Award to memorialize Farrington after his untimely death in 1968. He was one who contributed in extraordinary ways to the Richfield Chamber of Commerce, to the community of Richfield and to his family. The award is also to show how each recipient has displayed the same idealism. “Tim can see the vision [of what Richfield can be],”

Richfield Lions… courage, brains and heart BY BILLIE JO RASSAT • SUN NEWSPAPERS The 14 members of the Richfield Lions Club are not in need of any courage, as they have no fear in working hard for their cause. The Richfield Lions Club reinstated their charter in June of 2006 and has since been diligently working to get their name back into casual talk through out the Richfield community. Led by President Lion Barb Shelton, First Vice President Lion Jerry Guritz, Secretary Lion Paul Black, Treasurer Lion Doug Bergeson, Tail Twister Lion Todd Shelton and Membership Chair Lion Alex Frick, the group has raised over $9500 towards the charities they support. “Our main goal is to serve the community in the needs that arise,” Black said. Some of the causes and charities the Richfield Lions support are Richfield’s Beyond the Yellow Ribbon campaign, the American Diabetes Association at the University of Minnesota, Can Do

Canines and Lions Children’s Hearing and ENT Clinic at the University of Minnesota. Other charitable work the group does includes this past January, Black embarked in a special mission to provide a woman in south Minneapolis with a special magnifier reader she desperately needed. With the help of Roger Badenhop of the Minnetonka Lions, Black personally delivered the reader to Marie Bergstrom. To raise money for the charities Richfield Lions get involved in many different types of fundraisers such as selling tickets for the Midway rides at the Minnesota State Fair, serving as bell ringers for the Salvation Army and through out the year the Richfield Lions will partner with local restaurants like Houlihan's and Bakers Square in Richfield and Timber Lodge in Bloomington, where a percentage of the money earned on a certain night at each restaurant is donated to the LIONS: TO PAGE 25

Man sentenced for threatening coworkers On Sept. 22 in federal court, a 45-year-old Richfield man was sentenced for mailing a letter that contained a threat to kill and injure several employees of the Embassy Suites Hotel in Bloomington, where he worked. United States District Court Judge Joan Ericksen sentenced Peter Winston Beckles to four years of probation, along with 150 hours of community service on one count of mailing a threatening communication. In addition, Beckles was ordered to pay $8,103.72 in restitution. Beckles was charged on March 7, and pleaded guilty on March 21. In his plea agreement, Beckles admitted that on June 1, 2010, he mailed a letter to the Bloomington hotel’s parent company, Hilton Hotels, in Memphis, Tenn. The letter described the race-based hostilities he harbored toward a number of his co-workers at Embassy Suites. It also included threats to injure and even kill many of them. This case was the result of an investigation by the Federal Bureau of Investigation. Assistant U.S. Attorney Jeffrey S. Paulsen prosecuted Beckles case.

Richfield School District taking a stand on key issues and concerns BY BILLIE JO RASSAT • SUN NEWSPAPERS As new business at the Sept. 19 Richfield School Board meeting, the board discussed the recommended legislation resolutions, compiled by Supt. Robert Slotterback, that are most important the Richfield School District to be brought to the Minnesota School Board Association. Each year the MSBA asks participating districts to propose legislative resolutions for the MSBA Delegate Assembly to be part of the MSBA legislative platform, according to Slotterback. The Richfield School Board will recommend three resolutions to the MSBA that feel will benefit the Richfield schools the most. The first resolution is to have incentives for year-round schooling established. According to Slotterback, this resolution requires the Minnesota Department of Education to establish a funding stream that would allow districts that want to establish year-round schools, either through alternating

calendars or by adding instructional days. The second resolution is to get state funding for all day kindergarten. This resolution is important because research supports the expansion of Kindergarten to an all-day program is a very effective method to help students improve performance, especially those students that come from disadvantaged circumstances as a result the board feels the state should fund allday program, according to Slotterback. The last resolution supported by the board is to support state testing standardization. At the current time, according to Slotterback, every state has developed a unique testing regimen to comply with the No Child Left behind act and as a result has led to significant inconsistencies in evaluating student performances. The board feels Minnesota should take a stance on supporting a standardized set of assessments that all states would use, said Slotterback. MSBA: TO NEXT PAGE

Someone should benefit from my time in college The last week in September is Homecoming Week up at my alma mater, the University of Minnesota, Morris, and I've been invited to attend a number of alumni events as a representative of the newspaper industry and to enlighten students on the pros and cons of working in journalism. I think. To be frank, I'm not quite sure why they picked me — I highly doubt the criteria for selection included “dashing, handsome and has access to frequent columns in a newspaper.” For whatever reason, the alumni office asked me to take a drive up to Morris for a few days to join in the festivities, and I plan to be there. (Or, I am there. The conjugation of that verb and formation of the sentence around it entirely rests on when you, dear reader, are actually reading this column.) My time in college gave me many things: A healthy appreciation for seemingly endless insomnia, for example. Also, a solid

DANIEL CALLAHAN Richfield Sun-Current Managing Editor

understanding of how to buy exactly enough food to prevent starvation, but still have money for rent, electricity, perpetually popping bicycle tires and the numerous copies I was somehow always making in this increasingly paper-free world. So, in the spirit of education and giving advice that somehow, at some point, might be useful to those who tread the path I too recently walked myself, I dug down deep and came up with some thoughts for those just starting off on whatever journey it is they are on. Then I sat down and wrote that column, touching on the finer points of how to succeed in college. It was a fine piece of writing, if I do say so myself,

and I was initially pleased with it. Then I tore up the page and deleted the file. You see, the reason I made it from orientation to graduation has less to do with anything I learned while I was there, and far more to do with a simple mantra that was given to me shortly before I left for school. This most important piece is one I cannot claim as my own, because it was given to me by someone close to me. I won't divulge his name here for risk of, well, nothing in particular. I'm just not sure he's interested in seeing his name in print — again. For those communications and journalism students reading this, yes, I am using an anonymous source and, no, I haven't factchecked his information. Deviations aside, he said, quite plainly, “Don't forget why you're here.” Why you're here: That's the kicker. It's advice that can apply to anyone regardless of whether

they're in school or not. There are so many distractions that can crop up; interpersonal drama, bills, clubs, parties and everything else can get in the way. Remembering why you're spending the time, money and effort to fill every day to do what you do every day should be paramount. Don't let the minutia occupy your mind, learn to avoid the pitfalls and aim yourself toward what it is you want. Gather the knowledge. Staying on the path you've chosen isn't always easy, but one day you, too, may be able to offer somewhat trite platitudes to those who come after you. Just to add a little disclaimer — something I find myself doing on a regular basis in my columns — a four-year degree isn't for everyone. I have many friends who have happy, healthy, successful lives and careers without going to or graduating from college. The right path for some is the wrong road for others.

Phantom candidates waste everyone’s time Each year when election season rolls around, a deep sigh echoes through our newsroom. To be honest, many deep sighs. It can be a very frustrating experience. For the most part, the candidates are good to deal with. They respond to our requests for information, make themselves available for interviews and generally take their bid for election serious. But there are always a handful who don’t. I call them the phantom candidates. Yes, they file to run, but that’s the last you hear from them. In doing our due diligence, we take above-and-beyond steps to try to track these people down to make sure they are included in our election coverage. We start out with an email generally, then a phone call and

PERSON’S NAME Title or other identification then a letter posted to their home address. From there we go to asking other candidates if they’ve seen or heard anything of the invisible candidate. On occasion we’ve gone back and sent registered letters (which came back undeliverable) and in one case I remember a couple years back, I sent a community editor to the doorstep of a so-called candidate. He wasn’t home. He also wasn’t home two days later when the community editor paid a return visit. Over the years I’ve grown a bit less diligent about tracking down these folks.

Who would file to run for office and then not participate in the campaign? What is the purpose, other than to cost the governing entity money? I suppose it’s a way of “making a statement,” but what would that statement be. “I’m so hard up for attention I file to run for office and then don’t participate in the election.” That is the statement being made, as far as I’m concerned. Already in this year’s election we’ve come across several phantom candidates. Generally the first tip-off is when they have no online presence. All serious candidates today down to the most microscopic of entities have a website, even if it’s nothing more than a glorified campaign pamphlet. The clincher is when they don’t answer their telephone for

days on end. When certified mail is returned, you know you’ve reached the end. I suppose everyone has the right to choose how they will campaign – or in this case refuse to campaign. Maybe it’s time we put some sort of penalty into the election laws. If you want to be a phantom candidate and there is sufficient evidence to convict you, the individual in question should be sentenced to scrub floors in the office of the Secretary of State the day after election night. The threat of manual labor ought to throw some scare into these folks. Of course, law enforcement would have the same problem finding them that we have, but they have the power of subpoeWAHL: TO NEXT PAGE

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Ashmead ‘a strong voice’ for schools To the editor: I believe that there has never been anyone so highly and uniquely qualified to be a Richfield School Board member as John Ashmead. John has worn hats in every type of venue with which a School Board member should be famil-

iar— he’s been a public-school principal and teacher, in his ‘retirement’ he’s currently an employee of the Richfield School District, transporting our children to and from activities and events, he’s a Richfield taxpayer and he’s the parent of four children who attended Richfield schools. In addition to his hands-on experience in these areas, his educational background gives John

Ashmead further knowledge in the realm of school administration. John will be a strong voice in discussions and decisions involving, among other topics, school finance, curriculum, personnel and testing. Although I don’t agree with John on every issue facing our district, as a personal friend, I know him to be a man of integrity and

deliberate, reasonable thought. I know that with his wide base of experience and knowledge with regard to school issues, he will make the best choices possible for our community, school personnel, and students. Please join me in voting for John Ashmead in the Nov. 8 School Board elections. Heidi Gaibor Richfield

Duo arrested, accused of numerous financial crimes BY MIKE HANKS • SUN NEWSPAPERS Two people suspected of stealing wallets and purses across the Twin Cities were arrested Sept. 21 at Hennepin County Government Center. The suspects, who had not been charged as of last week, are accused of several fraudulent financial transactions involving credit cards from the stolen wallets and purses in recent weeks, according to Bloomington police. The 25-year-old Minneapolis woman and the 32-year-old Brooklyn Center man were arrested in Minneapolis last week, where they were attending a parole violation hearing for the Brooklyn Center man, according to Bloomington Detective Carolyn MacAskill. Bloomington is coordinating the charges against the duo for several incidents that occurred in Hennepin County, as state statute allows for a felony charge with an automatic sentence of 48 months in prison when there are eight or more victims connected to identity theft charges, MacAskill explained. The duo is connected to several incidents outside of Hennepin County as well, MacAskill noted. On Aug. 19 two women reported that their wallets were stolen from

Cowboy Jack’s restaurant in Bloomington. One victim said that she had arrived at approximately 6:30 p.m. and set her purse down on a railing while waiting with friends for a table. When a table was available about 10 minutes later the woman noticed that her wallet was missing from her purse. The wallet contained several debit and credit cards. The officer who took the report told the victim to contact police if any of the cards were used, according to MacAskill. The victim learned by 7:30 p.m. that an attempt to use one of her cards had been made at a nearby Target store. An attempt to purchase $400 in gift cards had been declined because the card the suspect attempted to use had already been canceled. Surveillance video provided a description of the suspect. The victim later reported that her cards were used for two purchases totaling $570 at a Target in Richfield, and smaller purchases at a Super America and Walgreens in Shakopee. The second victim at Mad Jack’s reported that her purse, containing credit and debit cards and a cell phone, had been stolen from a chair in the restaurant, according to MacAskill. The victim reported several transactions and purchase attempts had

been made with her cards, including a $433 purchase from Target in Bloomington and five purchases from Kohl’s in Shakopee totaling $1,145. A patrol officer who heard the theft reports over his radio noticed a suspicious white vehicle parked in the corner of a Walgreens parking lot, away from other vehicles. The officer noticed that a man was seated inside the car, but did not stop to question him after running the vehicle’s license plate through his computer. When the officer later inquired if the store had surveillance video of the vehicle in its parking lot he was informed by the store manager that three women had attempted to purchase two gift cards that evening. They were denied the purchase when they could not provide identification during the transaction. They left the store, getting into a white vehicle with a male occupant. The white vehicle was registered to the Minneapolis suspect, who had been arrested in Bloomington June 18 on suspicion of theft from a vehicle and financial transaction card fraud, according to MacAskill. Through the woman’s previous booking photos and driver’s license photo it was determined she was the suspect in the Target surveillance video, MacAskill noted.

Additional surveillance video showed the same woman making purchases at stores where the stolen cards had reportedly been used. An unidentified woman was also shown using the stolen cards in some store videos. Further investigation linked the suspects to August thefts reported by three victims at Santorini’s Restaurant in Eden Prairie and a wallet theft at Shorewood Restaurant in Fridley, MacAskill noted. Investigation of those incidents provided surveillance video that appears to show the Minneapolis woman involved in numerous transactions, according to MacAskill. The Brooklyn Center man is also identified in at least one video. The Minneapolis woman was also linked to September thefts at Mermaid Bar in Mounds View and Blue Fox Bar & Grill in Arden Hills through surveillance video taken at stores shortly after the reported thefts of credit and debit cards. Through investigation of the September incidents MacAskill was able to identify a woman seen with the Minneapolis suspect. The 33-year-old woman, as well as the 32-year-old Brooklyn Center man, face possible felony financial transaction card fraud charges. The third woman had not been arrested as of last week.

A homespun hobby helps Bloomington woman keep kids warm BY JONATHAN YOUNG – SUN NEWSPAPERS On the coldest days this winter, Bloomington resident Patricia Halloway will have warm thoughts because 88 children she’s never met will have hats. Halloway recently donated 88 handknit hats to the Coats for Kids campaign sponsored by Pilgrim Cleaners, Sun Newspapers, KARE 11, KFAN and Subway. Making hats to donate wasn’t Halloway’s idea. Halloway, who is retired, learned to knit in her 20s, and she finds it relaxing. She wanted to find a way to use her hobby to help others. “I just like to knit, and I just was looking for a way to knit something for somebody,” she said. Then an aunt who lives in Indiana told Halloway she knits hats for local charities. “I thought, ‘I could do that — I have all this yarn and all this time,’” Halloway said. So Halloway began knitting hats. Then she had to find somewhere to donate the hats. When she heard about the Coats for Kids campaign, she figured

if children needed coats, they probably needed hats too. “I didn’t have coats, but I asked if they would want hats,” she said. That was about three years ago, and she has been making hats for the Coats for Kids campaign ever since. She has also begun donating knitted items to other charities. She said she makes about five or six hats a week in a variety of colors and sizes. Halloway hopes others will get involved however they can. “I’m sure that the 80-some hats I make come far short of the actual need,” she said. Halloway doesn’t think her contribution is worthy of notice, and she doesn’t brag about it. But she does find it rewarding to know children are benefiting from her work. “When it’s really, really cold, I like to think some kids are wearing them to keep warm,” she said. Others who wish to donate to the Coats for Kids campaign can drop donations off at any of the 25 Pilgrim Cleaners locations throughout the COATS: TO PAGE 17

Student security – What every college student should know As college students get settled on campus, fighting fraud may not be their top priority. However, college students are susceptible to identity theft and the Better Business Bureau of Minnesota and North Dakota (BBB) recommends that they take seven simple steps to protect themselves on campus. In 2010, 8.1 million Americans – or 3.5 percent of the population – became victims of identity theft, according to the 2011 Identity Fraud Survey conducted by Javelin Strategy & Research and sponsored by the BBB. The average mean cost of identity theft is $631 and the average time to resolve identity fraud is 33 hours – time better spent studying. “Friendly fraud accounts for 14 percent of all ID theft crimes. This means that new roommates and friends have just as much potential to commit dastardly identity theft as foreign-based scam artists phishing on the Internet.

And identity thieves – friend or foe – think nothing of dumpster diving (or rifling through unattended trash cans) for unshredded paperwork or taking mail from desk tops or unlocked mailboxes. They can even cruise social networking sites looking for personal tidbits that may unlock a wealth of information elsewhere. “In this day and age, you can’t always trust your peers, said Dana Badgerow, president and CEO of the BBB. “It’s extremely important for students to be vigilant in monitoring bank and credit card statements to spot unauthorized activity. Sign up for security alerts on your accounts and have them sent to your mobile phone so you’ll know if any changes have been made to your account. The BBB recommends that collegebound students take the following seven steps to fight identity theft on campus: Send sensitive mail to your parents’

home or a post office box. School mailboxes are not always secure and are often easily accessible in a dorm or apartment. Store important documents under lock and key. This includes your Social Security card, passport and bank and credit card statements. Shred credit card offers and any paper documents that have sensitive financial information rather than just tossing them in a dorm trash can. Never lend your credit or debit card to anyone. Just say no if your friend wants to borrow your card or asks you to cosign for a loan or financing for items like a TV. Make sure your computer has up-todate antivirus and spyware software. Always install any updates and patches to your computer’s operating system or

browser software, which help keep your computer safe from any new advances by identity thieves online. Always check your credit or debit card statements closely for any suspicious activity. The sooner you identify any potential fraud, the less you’ll suffer in the long run. Check out and verify unfamiliar websites with the BBB. Look for the BBB Accredited Business seal along with other trust seals; click on the seals to confirm that they are legitimate. Check your credit report at least once a year. You are entitled to one free report a year from each of the three reporting bureaus: TransUnion, Experian and Equifax. Look for any suspicious activity or inaccuracies. You can do this for free by visiting www.annualcreditreport.com.

Award FROM PAGE 1 Richfield Chamber of Commerce President Steve Lindgren, who received the award in 1996, said. In 2002, Carter became the general manager at the 90-employee Richfield/Bloomington Honda in Richfield after he scrimped and saved, devoting many hours to make his dream of buying onto a dealership a reality. After engaging help from Lindgren to run a business in Richfield, Carter became a solid member of the chamber. “I was in after Steve was so helpful in my business,” Carter said. From then on, Carter’s involvement in the chamber has followed the motto, “If you want to get involved, get involved and make something happen.” Working from the advice of his mother, “the more you help others get what they want the more you get what you want,” Carter has been lending a hand in the communicative process between the city of Richfield and future developers in Richfield. Award FROM PREVIOUS PAGE “We do not take credit for the development happening in Richfield now, but we are just proud to be involved and work as communicators between the developers and the city, Carter said. Carter has been keeping the lines of communication open between the city and the developers in recent Richfield projects such as the Wellington Management project at the old Kmart site, the Cornerstone Group project at the Lyndale Garden Center site and the revitalization project of the Menards store on Nicollet Avenue. As a result of his work and interest in the community, Carter was the first non-Richfield resident to ever be appointed by the city to a commission seat. He is currently in his second year of his first term as a member of the

Richfield Transportation Commission. As part of his work at the dealership, Carter speaks and listens to the customers he serves. Over 3400 active customers at Richfield/Bloomington Honda are Richfield residents, according to Carter. “I talk to my customers. They are my first concern at my business, but I hear what they like and don’t like about the driving conditions in Richfield, Carter said. In hearing those comments and concerns from the community, Carter takes them back to the transportation commission and uses them to make things happen. Other Richfield involvements include a love and membership to the Richfield Optimists Club. Carter’s main drive in the Optimists is their mantra that, “we help kids, as he is very family oriented. Carter is the father of 18-year-old Brandon Carter, who has jut left for college at Mankato State, and has been

married to Susan Carter for 21 years. Although Carter resides in Woodbury, he feels he is a Richfield resident at heart. “I just being here in Richfield is great. I really fit in. I see myself as a meat and potatoes kind of guy, dedicated to hard work and making the community stronger as any Richfield resident does. We are a great match, Carter said. As the current chair of the Richfield Chamber of Commerce, Carter’s influence has been crucial to many of the non-profit organizations around Richfield. “When he [Carter] sees the needs, he wants to get involved, Lindgren said. As part of the Richfield Beyond the Yellow Ribbon, Richfield/Bloomington Hondo has partnered to provide returning veterans and their families with car care education and maintenance, as well as job hunting skills such as resume building and interviewing skill training.

While not putting a number to the total, Carter and his dealership has contributed countless amounts of donations towards everything from education and athletics support to community events and celebrations. Being unanimously nominated for the Larry Farrington Award Carter has exemplified the true sprit Farrington bestowed upon the city of Richfield so many years ago. “I am humbled. I look down at the list of past winners and I don’t think I come close to matching a candle with those guys, Carters said. Past recipients include Leif Holter in 1972, Bob and Merilyn Jensen in 1981, Pat Rickert in 1990 and Pat Brekken in 2009. CIS FROM PAGE 1 they meet selection criteria that have been established by the relevant University academic department and CIS staff. Teachers that have been accepted into CIS are appointed as Teaching Specialists in the College of Continuing Education and have full access to university libraries and facilities and have continuous support by the university in means of materials, conferences and teaching workshops. “We meet throughout the year with other CIS teachers, and faculty members from the University. Professors in each field made presentations at the meetings to help create a better academic understanding of the curriculum,” Harris said of his experiences with the professional development program and resources for teachers. Students interested in CIS must be high school juniors or seniors who meet the class rank, GPA and/or other requirements stipulated by the university academic department sponsoring the CIS course, with occasional students admitted on the basis of a strong recommendation by the instructor. It may be no cost to the student participating in CIS at Richfield, the high school

only pays the University of Minnesota $145 per student per three to five credit courses. While enrolled university students are paying $448 per single credit. Doing the math, if a Richfield student successfully completes 32 credits of college in high school they could save as much as $14,000. “CIS students already have the credits and this sets them up to complete college in four years and avoid the large student loans,” Harris said. The University of Minnesota recognizes all CIS program credits, but those credits are also accepted by schools all across the nation. An annual survey, taken by the university has shown that 92-97 percent of respondents who sought to have their University of Minnesota credits earned through CIS recognized by other colleges or universities were successful. Another feature of the program is Field Day. According to Harris, CIS programs from around the state assemble at the University of Minnesota campus to work with other students to solve current problems; and hear a variety of speakers from the University and experts in the field. “It gets the students into large lecture halls for the first time, and lets them meet like minded students from other schools,” Harris said. Taking orders now, the Richfield Lions are selling one pound tins filled with cashews, mixed nuts, chocolate covered almonds, cashew brittle and peanut brittle. For every tin

Being a lot of fun, the group is always trying to become more involved in the community and trying to improve in their membership according to Shelton. “I do this because I really enjoy it,” Shelton said. The Richfield Lions are looking for dedicated individuals who are compassionate, strong, responsible and are themselves looking to fulfill that sense of pride and accomplishment that comes from volunteering. Spartans face stiff challenge against Spring Lake Park

Spartan pursuer Richfield senior Moses Mugwanja (6) battles a Hill-Murray player for possession during the Spartans’ 2-0 Classic Suburban Conference boys soccer loss Sept. 24 at home. The Spartans were beaten 6-1 by South St. Paul Sept. 22 and have a 1-9 record.

Dearing scores twice in Richfield’s 38-20 loss to Henry Sibley last week BY GREG KLEVEN • SUN NEWSPAPERS Richfield goes into this week’s football game against Spring Lake Park as the underdog, but head coach Todd Olson says the Spartans can be competitive. The Spartans (1-3) enter the 7 p.m. non-conference game at Spring Lake Park (3-1) after losing 38-20 to Henry Sibley Sept. 23 on the road. “Last season, we played Spring Lake Park well before losing 21-14,” said Olson. “We dropped a possible touchdown pass in the end zone that hurt. “Spring Lake Park has a physical team. But our offensive line is improving and getting more consistent. Defensively, we gave up a few explosive plays last week and we can’t do that against Spring Lake Park.” Olson said Richfield played a much better game last week in the 3820 loss to Henry Sibley than it did the week before, when the Spartans lost 49-7 to Hill-Murray. Richfield trailed Henry Sibley 17-1 at halftime. Eric Jimson ran 84 yards for one Spartan touchdown and Cam Dearing scored on a 13-yard run. Raheim Hampton kicked both extra points. However, Henry Sibley scored the next three touchdowns on runs of 33, 44 and 7 yards to take a 38-14 lead. Dearing scored the game’s last touchdown in the fourth quarter on a 90-yard kickoff return. “Dearing had a nice game playing both ways for us,” said Olson. “He finished with 83 yards rushing. “We had good effort from a lot of players but gave up too many big plays.”

Holy Angels survives scare to stay unbeaten Stars hold on for 35-33 Missota football win over Chanhassen BY GREG KLEVEN • SUN NEWSPAPERS Holy Angels’ winning streak was in jeopardy during the final seconds of the Stars’ Missota Conference football game at Chanhassen. However, the Stars held on for a 35-33 victory Sept. 23 as Chanhassen missed a 45-yard field goal attempt with 1.7 seconds remaining. Holy Angels improved to 4-0 and will try to keep that unbeaten streak intact at 7 p.m. Friday, Sept. 30, when it plays Farmington at the StarDome. The Stars will attempt to celebrate homecoming with a win over a Tigers team that is 1-3 after losing 42-10 to Shakopee last week. Holy Angels head coach Ray Betton said he doesn’t know if he can survive another close game this week. “My heart was in my mouth when Chanhassen attempted that field goal in the final seconds,” said the Stars coach.

“I was very happy to see that kick go left. “We didn’t expect to struggle to win after building leads of 21-0 and 28-7. But Chanhassen has a good wide receiver and quarterback and came back strong in the second half.” Holy Angels struck for three firstquarter touchdowns. Nick Price, a senior cornerback and wide receiver, caught a 63-yard scoring pass from quarterback Sam Keis. Bobby Ruckavina kicked the extra point. Keis followed with a 12-yard touchdown run and Anthony Baysah broke loose for a 49-yard scoring run. However, Chanhassen returned a fumble 1 yard for a touchdown late in the first quarter. Both teams scored one touchdown in the second quarter as the Stars built a commanding 28-13 lead. Price hauled in a 67-yard scoring pass from Keis. Chanhassen scored on a 7-yard run. The teams exchanged touchdowns again in the third quarter. Chanhassen scored on a 1-yard run and Holy Angels answered with a 34-yard touchdown run by Will Pagel. However, Chanhassen made things interesting by scoring twice in the

Right Way Painting Solutions After one of the most brutal winters we have encountered in the past 30 years, we have all found things that need repair or replacement on our homes. Many of us have needed to put off work being done to our homes do to economic hard times. Many of us also put off projects to save money in case things got worse. Our home values have gone down which makes it hard to even think about selling our homes. The reality is that we have to keep our property in good shape to maintain our values. Painting the exterior of our homes is by far the best value to preserving our wood surfaces and windows. We can also dramatically change the appearance of the inside of our homes by updating colors. Painting woodwork is a very affordable option compared to replacing old trim around our homes. In many older homes our windows are still good, but the old stain and varnish are not holding up any more. You can save thousands of dollars by painting these windows verses replacing windows. Updating your

basement family room can also be as easy as painting the paneling. I’m Paul Moore from Rightway Painting Solutions. I’ve been in the painting business for over 20 years. Being a former Shop Teacher, I have a good background in finishing and wood replacement. We do both residential and commercial painting. We do work for several Town Home Associations, Nursing Homes and Residential Properties. We give our customers great value by being able to not just paint. We replace or repair wood, repair and reglaze older windows and reside areas that need replacement. We also repair decks and re stain decks. On the inside we repair walls, remove wallpaper, enamel wood work and paint paneling. We offer a 2 year labor warrantee on our labor, provide references and we would be happy to give you a free estimate. For all of your painting needs give us a call at 612-8392239.

fourth quarter on a 44-yard run and 20yard interception return. Baysah finished as Holy Angels’ rushing leader with 122 yards on 12 carries. Keis connected on seven of 11 passes for 187 yards. Betton was impressed by the performance of Price. “Mike is a two-way starter for us and our fastest runner,” said the Holy Angels coach. “He runs the 40-yard dash in 4.6 seconds and won the 100-meter dash in the Missota Conference championship meet last spring in track. “Mike had three catches for 138 yards and two touchdowns against Chanhassen. He is dangerous after he catches the ball because of his speed.”

Cross country The Holy Angels girls cross country squad had a sixth-place finish in a 13team field at the Ron Kretsch Invitational Sept. 10 at Bassett Creek Park. Stars sophomore runner Emily Vigil finished fifth overall with a time of 9 minutes on the 2,400-meter course. By: Ali Holman, co-owner of www.coreconditioningtraining.com I think we can all agree that eating is fun. Not only is it a way for us to socialize, reward ourselves and comfort ourselves, it also is the one area of fitness where people have the most trouble. Wouldn’t it be great to know that the choices you make are actually helping your fitness program? More importantly, wouldn’t it be even better to banish the word “diet” from your vocabulary? Chances are, if you are embarking on a “diet”, it will have a beginning and an end. The end is usually followed by slowly going back to old habits and ends you right back where you started. With our clients, we really encourage them to focus on a Lifestyle Change with room for “cheat meals” and realistic goals; which inevitably lead to lifelong results and without the emotional roller coaster of a diet.

Core/Conditioning Training’s List of “Fat Burning Foods”

eggs

low-fat dairy

Eggs are high in protein and low in calories. You may have heard all the warnings about eggs and your health: opt for eggwhites for the low-cholesterol, fatburning effect. Eggs also contain the vitamin B-12, a great supplement for breaking down fat cells.

Studies show that women who eat low-fat dairy products (such as non-fat yogurt and low-fat milk) three to four times a day lost 70 percent more fat than low-dairy dieters.

beans

oatmeal

Beans are one of the best sources of protein, fiber and iron. Some of the best beans to ear are: • Navy Beans • White Beans • Kidney Beans • Lima Beans

Oatmeal is loaded with soluble fiber, which helps reduce blood cholesterol by flushing those bad digestive acids out of your system. Skip the flavored oatmeals - you lose out on all the health benefits. If you must sweeten your oatmeal, do so by adding fruit.

olive oil

lean meats

Certain fats are good for you, and your body needs them. Olive oil is one of those “good fats.” It helps you burn fat and keeps your cholesterol down. One ounce of extra virgin olive oil contains about 85% of the daily value for monosaturated fat.

Search for lean meats - chicken (baked, broiled, grilled), fish and turkey - which are all high in protein. It is a good rule of thumb to consume at least one half-gram protein per pound of body weight each day. A chicken breast gets you well on your way, with about 22 grams of protein.

whole grains

interval training

Our body needs carbohydrates, despite what the fad diets tell you. Avoid processed carbohydrates such as white breads, bagles, pastas and white rice and look for whole grains that have not been processed and contain the fiber and minerals your body needs.

Interval training is defined as short, repeated bouts of intense exercise with minimal rest. You can burn major calories and get an all-over workout in less than 30 minutes. When you see people who are “cut,” chances ar they are partaking in interval training.
