State of Richfield Schools Superintendent gives address outlining successes, budgeting issues facing the district BY BILLIE JO RASSAT SUN NEWSPAPERS Positive results and information about the upcoming referendum led the topics discussed at the annual Richfield Chamber of Commerce State of Schools Address. On Aug. 31, Richfield School District Supt. Robert Slotterback reported on the progress and happenings in the Richfield public schools. First on his list, Slotterback announced Richfield public schools are reaching the three main goals Slotterback set at the beginning of his tenure. The goals Slotterback set were to track and retain more of the school age residents of Richfield, raise the educational performance of the students at Richfield Public Schools and to close the achievement gap. Richfield Cattails Days launches new attractions

BY BILLIE JO RASSAT • SUN NEWSPAPERS Under new management, the 2011 Richfield Cattail Days is taking a turn towards change. From 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 17, at Veterans Memorial Part, 6335 Portland Ave. S., in Richfield, Cattail Days will feature a car show and community expo. “This year we will be adding new cars with the old ones,” Richfield Vision Inc. President and Cattail Days Coordinator John Bjostad said. Groups such as Acme Speed Shop and The Chevrolet Camero Club will display their cars from the 1940s, 1950s and 1960s. While the staff from Richfield/Bloomington Honda and other area dealerships will proudly display cars from the present and future. “The big draw will be to see the restored cars from the ’40s, ’50s and ’60s, and all of the spectacular work that has been done on cars to be showcased, some of which are even better than when they were brand new,” Bjostad said. COMMUNITY NOTES Fall skating lessons to begin Sept. 24 Fall skating lessons begin Saturday mornings, Sept. 24 for children 4 years of age and older at the Richfield Ice Arena, 636 E. 66th St. The cost is $70, Richfield residents will receive a $5 discount, for eight half-hour lessons and admission to five open skating sessions. Rental skates are available for $1 during lessons. Class sizes are limited and pre-registration is recommended. Registrations can be done in person or by phone Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., by mail or dropped off at arena. Open skating is offered Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday from noon to 1:30 p.m., Wednesday evenings 6:30-8 p.m. and Sundays 3:30-5 p.m. The cost is $4 per skater. Times change, education changes with it I was one of those odd children who couldn’t wait for school to begin each fall. There is only so much laying in the grass and reading you can do before boredom sets in. The alternative, of course, was having to mow that dang lawn. We had acres of it. An informal survey I have conducted the past few weeks asking school children about the return of school days confirmed that children today have much the same feeling. Most are excited to get back into the routine of classes, studying and friends. Heavy emphasis on friends. Education today, it seems, has a thriving social component. While children may text each other, talk via Facebook or phone, there seems to be a connection that only face-toface interaction can provide. A lot of people today ring

their hands and fret about “what the world is coming to” with today’s generation of children who are nothing like we were at the same age. I’m not in that camp. I have looked over to the other side and liked what I saw. Today’s children are sharp cookies. They are informed, caring young people who face the world with a different sort of outlook than we did. Yeah there are a handful you’d like to take out behind the woodshed and spank, but for the most part, the children I interact with are impressive. During a school year, I usu-
ally have a couple opportunities to spend time with high schoolers. All I can say is I’m glad I will not have to compete against any of them for a job. Their natural affinity for technology puts them lightyears ahead of those in their 30s or 40s – much less their 50s. Although technology clearly isn’t the be-all and end-all, it’s difficult to downplay the importance of mastering electronic communication. I also spent time with a class of middle-school students last year who were among the most impressive I’ve met. I was introduced to the material they were learning as a freshman in college. If you are one of those who has doubts about what our future holds based on today’s youth, I would encourage you to get out of your bunker and
LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Back pay has been donated to Cornerstone To the editor: During the government shutdown, I stood in solidarity with laid-off state workers and did not receive my paycheck. Once the shutdown was completed, I was informed by the House Budget Office that they could not donate my back pay, and I had to take my check and then donate it to a worthy cause, which is exactly what I’ve done. I wanted my salary from the shutdown to be useful in the communities I represent. Domestic abuse prevention programs were dealt a massive cut by the majority party in the legislature. I donated to Cornerstone of Bloomington to try to alleviate some of the budgetary pressure they felt. Cornerstone is a domestic abuse pre-
vention program serving both my communities of Richfield and Bloomington. Cornerstone does great work for the people in the communities I have the honor of serving and I felt this was a very worthy use of my pay from the shutdown. I did this not for political purposes – in fact, it was done long before the recent outrage over legislative back pay – but to do the right thing, and to benefit our community. I find the journalism done on this story to be reprehensible. Few media outlets bothered to contact me and others choose to ignore my donation in an effort to portray me as a “typical politician.” I always have done my best to serve my constituents honorably, and this situation is no different. Make it your goal to get to know at least a handful of young people this school year, whether through your schools, churches or a nonprofit. Go with an open mind. Be prepared for a noise level that may be foreign to you. Allow for individuality. Smile. After your adventure, let me know what you think. If you still find you have to bash education and today’s youth in general, you will at least have a basis and perspective for your conclusions. Richfield Students need help to get to D.C. Discovered by their fifth-grade teacher Chris Pregler, students Citlalli Alvarado Guzman, Jadon Babinski, Emma Carpenter, Armando Garcia Lopez, Kaleb Handler, Brandon Johnson, Jessica Kaiser, Jessica Toensing, Xochitl Vazquez Rosas and Zach Visecky were selected to go on a trip to Washington, D.C., sponsored by Discovery Student Adventures. though the school administration, Pregler offered his students a chance to be one of the 10 to go, as space was limited. Each of the 16 students who expressed interest wrote an essay on why they should be one of the candidates to go. One student wrote, “I want to go to Washington, D.C., because it would be a great experience for me and would be a chance for me to show Mr. Pregler and my parents how responsible I can be.” Another said, “I would show D.C. how respectful and eager to learn kids are from our class and school.” Now with the ten students going, they have to raise $23,800 for the trip, each child will cost $2380 to go, but as a group they decided to raise the money as a group, according to Pregler. At only $5,700, the students have worked very hard this summer planning and holding two garage sales.

This fall, look for the students to offer their services for any lawn care clean-up jobs to be done any time from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. during the weekends in the month of October. Also from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Oct. 29, the students and families will be raising money by bagging groceries at the Bloomington Cub Foods, 8421 Lyndale Ave. S. Over the holidays keep an eye out for the students to be holding giftwrapping events for a modest amount. Pregler has been investigating on any grants the students may qualify for and the Bloomington/Richfield Credit Union donated $500. During their highly anticipated trip to Washington, D.C., which will be over the Fourth of July in 2012, the students will experience a time like no other, according to Pregler.

The six-day trip will begin with a visit to 1600 Pennsylvania Ave., followed by visits to iconic memorials such as the Lincoln, Vietnam, WWII and Jefferson memorials. The nest day they will be introduced to a congressional representative and be given a personal tour of the U.S. Capitol building. On day three, the students will participate in Operation Spy, where they will have an interactive experience in playing the role of a spy. They will also participate in an environmental clean up project on the Anacostia River and after, the students will benefit from the National Aquarium and have a behind

the scenes tour complete with feeding and a look at marine life care. The next day, the students will be shipped up the Appalachian Mountains and get first hand look at the Gettysburg National Military Park with a chance to be part of a reenactment battle. Before they leave on day six, the students will spend day five behind the scenes at Discovery headquarters. Here the students will be given a special screening of an upcoming program for the Discovery Channel and a chance to speak with a Discovery Channel film producer. They will end their day facing their fears enjoying
the largest aerial adventure park in the United States. “I just think their energy, commitment and enthusiasm for what they’re reaching for is so inspiring. With the economy and politics as crazy as it is right now, and undoubtedly will continue to be, it’s exciting to hear today’s youth showing an interest and stepping up to say, ‘how can I play a part,’” Shotwell said.

Sept. is Life Insurance Awareness Month Combination life insurance products grew 62 percent in 2010 and reached $1.2 billion in sales, according to LIMRA, an industry research organization. The increase, which has experienced double-digit growth for the second year in a row, was mainly due to mounting popularity of linked benefit policies. In September, during Life Insurance Awareness Month, Richfield-based Newman Long Term Care is focused on educating people about how life insurance can help cover the costs of long-term care. Roughly 70 percent of people over the age of 65 will require some type of longterm care before they die. With new linked benefit products, people can now receive
long-term care benefits through their life insurance policies. Linked benefits offer consumers protection as a flexible alternative to stand-alone long-term care insurance. “Just like life insurance, a long-term care policy is all about securing the future,” founder of Newman Long Term Care Deb Newman said. “When these two products combine, it helps people build an even stronger safety net for both themselves and the people they love most.” Life Insurance Awareness Month is an educational campaign designed to help consumers learn how to protect their loved ones through proper life insurance planning. Groups sponsor National Preparedness Month Richfield CERT, Police and Fire departments are encouraging families, businesses and communities to participate in the 2011 National Preparedness Month during the month of September.
The annual campaign seeks to transform awareness into action by encouraging all Americans to take the necessary steps to ensure that their families, homes, workplaces and communities are prepared for disasters and emergencies of all kinds. The eighth annual NPM will kickoff this September, using the slogan, “A Time to Remember. A Time to Prepare!” “As we move forward with planning for this year's events and activities, we also recognize that this September marks the ten year anniversary of the 9/11 terrorist attacks,” said FEMA Administrator Craig Fugate. “By doing what we can to ensure that our communities, and our nation, are prepared to respond and recover from all types of disasters and hazards, we honor the memory of those who were lost that day.” The city of Richfield is hosting events, promoting volunteer programs and sharing emergency preparedness information as a NPM coalition member to help ensure that our community is prepared for emergencies. These symptoms include fatigue, weight gain, mood swings, sweet cravings, depression, sluggish thinking, thinning hair or hair loss, and cold hands and feet. For some people digestive problems like constipation and acid indigestion may signal low thyroid. Children’s Music Festival in Richfield A Children’s Music Festival will be held from 1-4 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 11, at Veterans Memorial Park, 6335 Portland Ave., Richfield. Once built, children with life-threatening illnesses and their families will be able to stay at CLM for respite stays and at end-of-life. In addition, the home will offer bereaved families in the community an avenue for developing supportive relationships. The purpose of the Children’s Music Festival is to spread the word and raise necessary funds. The awards will recognize people who go above and beyond the call of duty in helping their fellow man, according to Bloomington Crime Prevention Association President Jim Caauwe. The Hometown Heroes Celebration is intended to be an annual fundraising event to support the Bloomington Crime Prevention Association’s annual grant program. It will include the presentation of three awards intended
to remember, recognize and raise. Schools FROM PAGE 1 of Slotterback’s goals, the issues Richfield has had in the past were that many residents had chosen to home school their children or allow them to attended out of district schools. Slotterback began monitoring this goal with only 72 percent of Richfield residents attending Richfield public schools, but now over 75 percent are enrolled in district schools. “I attribute these increases with the additions of the Richfield Dual Language School, Richfield STEM School and other improvements throughout the district,” Slotterback said. For proving successes towards his second and third goals, Slotterback presented statistics of improvements in the standard ACT College Readiness Tests of Richfield students. Broken down in subgroups by race such as African American, Hispanic, Asian and White student groups, Richfield saw improvements in all. Not only were there improvements in test scores in each subgroup; the amount of students taking the ACT went up. “When you have more students taking

Are you afraid to use your fireplace because you’re not sure how safe it is? When was the last time you used it? Did you know that water causes more damage to masonry chimneys than fire? Your chimney, unlike other parts of your house, is constantly exposed to the elements. They are generally constructed of brick, mortar, tile, steel, and iron. All of these materials suffer deterioration as a result of prolonged contact with water. There are three main ways to prevent water damage. 1) Install a chimney cap. This is the most inexpensive measure to prevent water penetration to the flue and inside chimney elements. We sell and install locally manufactured caps for as little as $99. 2) Repair or replace a damaged chimney crown. The crown sits atop your chimney and covers and seals it from the flue liners to the chimney edge. Many chimneys are built with an inadequate crown constructed from common mortar mix. Mortar is not designed for and will not withstand years of prolonged moisture exposure without cracking and chipping which allows water to penetrate the chimney. A proper crown is constructed of a Portland
cement mixture and formed to provide an overhang drip edge. This assures the water will shed helping to prevent erosion in the mortar and brick of the chimneys surfaces. Keeping the crown “watertight” and shedding away from the sponge like masonry elements that the chimney is built of is the most important element to preventing deterioration. At AirBroom Minnesota we use the industry leading line of Saver products to build and repair chimneys. Use of these products allows us to pass on manufacturers material warranties of up to 15 years to our clients. 3) Waterproof your masonry chimney and crown. Most masonry is porous and will absorb large amounts of water. Brick acts like a sponge absorbing water and wicking it to the chimney interior. Products we use are specifically developed for use as waterproofing agents on masonry chimneys. These are vapor permeable – which means they allow the masonry to breath out but not in. This allows water that has penetrated the chimney to escape while preventing additional water from entering from the outside. Non vapor permeable sealers commonly available should never be used because they trap moisture inside actually accelerating deterioration. We use a special permeable sealer with a 10 year consumer warranty to protect your chimney. Doing this before deterioration occurs can save you hundreds or even thousands of dollars in future repairs. Water damage to chimneys is usually a slow subtle process. The problem is generally not obvious until it has become quite serious. Although these prevention measures may cost you a few dollars they can save you a lot more by preventing large future masonry repairs. To become a partnering family, few qualifications must be met such as they must have lived in the Twin Cities sevencounty metro-area for at least one year, meet Twin Cities Habitat for Humanity’s income guidelines and credit standards, acknowledge and accept the responsibilities of homeownership, attend all sessions of Habitat homeowner training and contribute 300-500 hours of work toward the construction of any Habitat home. Getting started on building or reconstructing a home, Twin Cities Habitat relies on volunteers to carry out their mission. The construction of the Richfield home broke ground on Aug. 1, with the dedicated volunteers beginning on Aug. 15 and the estimated completion is set for Dec. 31, according to Twin Cities Habitat for Humanity Site Supervisor Craig Norton. The volunteering organizations, known as House Partners, at the Richfield construction site include Bloomington Coalition, Family of Christ Lutheran in Chanhassen, Gethsemane Lutheran in Hopkins, Living Christ Lutheran in Chanhassen, Minnetonka Lutheran Church, Prince of Peace Lutheran in Burnsville, Thrivent Corporate Employees, Thrivent Financial Representatives and Nokomis Builds that includes Annunciation Catholic Community, Bethel Lutheran Church, Hope Lutheran Church, Lake Nokomis Lutheran Church, Nokomis Heights Lutheran Church and Our Lady of Peace Catholic Community. “Every day we have a different crew of nine to ten volunteers,” Norton said. On Aug. 31 and Sept. 1, volunteers from Minnetonka Lutheran Church cut and nailed plywood to the frame of the house.
“They are professionals,” Minnetonka Lutheran Church member and volunteer coordinator for this project Gary Schmidt said about the hard work he and his group have demonstrated. “They are learning fast, enthusiastic and are having a lot of fun.” This experience for Mohamoud and his family means making life easier and providing more independence for their family Mohamoud said. Mohamoud, his wife and their five children, Layla, 12, Faisa, 9, Abduljabbar, 6, Saham, 4, and 2-year-old Abdulkadif are all excited to have a home of their own. “It is wonderful. I have been dreaming on a home of my own and for my children for a long time. Now I will have it. Thank you, Habitat,” Yusuf said.

First, the school district allowed free admission to Richfield’s Classic Suburban Conference game against North St. Paul Sept. 1 at Spartan Stadium. And fans took advantage of that offer to pack the stands. Spartan Stadium’s new artificial turf was also on display. Plus, the Richfield Quarterback Club held a tailgate party prior to kickoff. And the evening’s festivities were capped by a 27-13 Richfield victory over North St. Paul. “Opening game was a great community event,” said Richfield head football coach/athletic director Todd Olson. “We had a tremendous crowd and our players performed well. We also heard a lot of positive things about our new field.” Olson said he was delighted with his team’s performance in the season debut. “We kept mistakes to a minimum and ran a very efficient offense for a first game,” said Olson. “Our defense put good pressure on their quarterback and the guys really hustled.” Richfield opened scoring in the second quarter on a 6-yard pass from junior quarterback Corban Halbur to senior wide receiver Eric Jimson. Raheim Hampton kicked the extra point. North St. Paul came back to tie the score at 7-7 before halftime on a 6-yard run and conversion. The teams exchanged touchdowns in the third quarter, but Richfield’s Mick Dhein blocked the Polars’ extra-point attempt, leaving the Spartans with a 1413 advantage. State swimming veterans return for Richfield Stars shine Pospisil, Miller are key returnees for Spartan squad

BY GREG KLEVEN • SUN NEWSPAPERS Two state Class A performers return for the Richfield girls swimming team this fall. Senior Sarah Pospisil and junior Courtney Miller are state tourney veterans expected to provide valuable points for the Spartans this season. Pospisil placed seventh in the 200yard individual medley at state last fall with a time of 2 minutes, 12.07 seconds. Miller could be a state diving title contender after finishing 12th at state as a sophomore. “Pospisil has the potential to finish third or better at state,” said Richfield veteran head coach Marc Hamren. “She is talented in all four strokes of the 200 IM. “She works hard and is a determined and persistent swimmer.” Hamren likes Miller’s chances of medaling at state as well. “Miller placed 12th at state last year but six divers who finished ahead of her have graduated,” said Hamren. “I’m looking for her to place around third this season.” Another Spartan swimming strength is the team’s 200 medley relay. Richfield returns senior Margaret Schroeder, Pospisil, senior Sarah Sathre and freshman Kinya Gilbert from its 200 medley relay team that placed fourth at section last year. “That 200 medley relay has the potential to qualify and finish in the top eight at state this season.” Pospisil will share the Spartan captaincy with Sathre (freestyler) and Schroeder (backstroker). Gilbert returns as a sprint freestyler for the Spartans. Richfield was 20th at state last season with 38 points. The Spartans were fourth in the Section 4 meet. Richfield opened its 2011 dual meet season with a 111-73 loss to host Foley Aug. 26. The Spartans broke two Foley pool records in the defeat. Pospisil won the 100-yard butterfly in a time of 1:04.21. Miller took first in diving with a pool-record score of 221.50 points. Richfield will swim against host Henry Sibley at 6 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 8, at Heritage Middle School.

Holy Angels head football coach Ray Betton emphasizes defense. So he was pleased with how his team performed in its season opener Sept. 2. Holy Angels blanked host Chisago Lakes 28-0 with a solid effort on both sides of the ball. Senior linebacker T.J. Patrias was all over the field, leading the Spartan defense with 13 tackles. Senior defensive back Parker Bredow contributed 10 tackles. Holy Angels senior defensive end Brett Pierce blocked a punt. “It is an accomplishment any time you go to somebody else’s field and come away with a victory,” said Betton. “Our defense executed very well against Chisago Lake’s option offense. Our defensive guys played very fast and got to the ball.” There was nothing wrong with Holy Angels’ offense, either. Senior running back Will Pagel finished with 98 yards receiving and junior running back Anthony Baysah provided 93 yards rushing. Holy Angels took command of the game in the second quarter, scoring three times. Pagel caught a 68-yard touchdown pass from junior quarterback Sam Keis. The Stars’ kick failed. Keis scored on a 1-yard run. Baysah reached the end zone on a conversion run. Baysah ran 30 yards for Holy Angels’ third score of the second quarter. Junior Bobby Ruckavina kicked the extra point. Holy Angels finished the scoring in the fourth quarter on a 13-yard run by junior running back Mikias Alipate and a Ruckavina kick. Holy Angels remains on the road to play New Prague at 7 p.m. Friday, Sept. 2. Mankato West defeated New Prague 60-14 last week. “We always seem to have close, defensive battles with New Prague,” said Betton, in his second season as the Stars’ head coach. “We must try to contain New Prague’s option offense like we did last week against Chisago Lakes. And we must eliminate mistakes.”
