Empty storefronts still numerous at Cedar Point Commons Property owner Ryan Companies and city of Richfield confident the spaces will be filled when economy picks up BY ANDREW WIG – SUN NEWSPAPERS Since opening three-and-a-half years ago, the Cedar Point Commons shopping complex has attracted plenty of traffic to the eastern edge of Richfield, anchored by Home Depot and a Super Target considered to be one of the top performing stores of its kind in the market. But a conspicuous sight remains: More than half of the non-big-box storefronts — 10 in total — have remained empty. “For lease” signs stand in the windows of some of the empty windows, while temporary decorative murals depicting strolling shoppers, bags in hand, camouflage the other darkened retail spaces. As is the common refrain, the city and property owners chalk the empty
windows up to yet another sign of the economic times. Normally it takes at least two and a half years to fully lease a property, depending on market conditions, according to Mark Kampmeyer, senior director of retail sales and leasing for Ryan Companies, which owns the retail complex. “Leasing activity has been slow,” Kampmeyer said. “The market’s improving, too.”
“We do hear from prospective tenants from time to time,” said John Stark, Richfield community planning director. “People are looking at (Cedar Point).” Although he would not name names, Stark said a national restaurant and a national retailer are exploring leasing some space at the complex. Also tight-lipped about specifics, Kampmeyer said two new tenants are “very close” to agreeing set up stakes. Whoever that is, he added, “We’ve tried to be very cautious about getting top retailers in.” And attracting them should be no problem once “the economy comes back,” Stark said. In a note of comfort, Stark said the stores that have inquired about Cedar Point, but still waiting to make a move, are not opening new stores anywhere, “but (Cedar Point) is on the top of their

list.” Despite the empty spaces, Cedar Point holds down a prime location, Kampmeyer said. Aside from drawing from Richfield and Bloomington, Cedar Point is the closest retail source of its kind for a sizable population base to the north. “You’ve got a pipeline coming from south Minneapolis,” Kampmeyer said. “A couple hundred thousand rooftops to the north really drive a lot of traffic to the center.” Latching on to the complex so far, aside from the anchor tenants, are TCF Bank, Famous Footwear, Caribou Coffee, Verizon Wireless, Subway, Great Clips and Chipotle. In addition, McDonald’s has been in talks to build a stand-alone restaurant between the south end of the property and Mount Calvary Lutheran Church, Stark said. Noting the prospective lessees and the reported success of the Target and Home Depot anchors, Stark expressed additional confidence in the health of Cedar Point. “They’ve got the anchors in and that’s the big thing. That’s what pays the bills,” he said. As for the rest of Richfield’s retailers: “In the big picture I think we’re doing pretty well,” Stark added. Other than the (Borders closing nationally), we didn’t have any of the large retailers that went out of business. … To that degree we’re actually pretty fortunate and I think we’re doing better than most communities.”

Let’s talk about race Richfield teachers take classes exploring the role of race in their lives and in school BY ANDREW WIG – SUN NEWSPAPERS Mike Cunningham was the whitest guy in the room. At least according to the “white privilege” score he gave himself as he and a collection of other teachers assessed what kind of treatment their race had afforded them. On a scale of zero to five, they marked how accurately the 26 statements applied to their own experiences: Could they find Band-Aids that match their skin color? Could they speak to in public to a powerful group without putting their race on trial? Could they take a job without co-workers suspecting affirmative action? Cunningham gave himself a “five” on everything. Then he and the other teachers — mostly white but peppered with Asians, blacks and Native Americans — lined up, those with the highest score on

lag far behind white students. According to 2011 data from the Minnesota Department of Education, 20 percent of Hispanics and 24 percent of blacks students rated as proficient in math, based on all accountability testing, while 61 percent of whites were rated proficient. The gap is similar in science, while it is most narrow in reading, where 35 percent of Hispanics and 50 percent of blacks rated as proficient, compared to 78 percent for whites. While many have been taught to avoid the subject of race, Jacobs talks about it all the time, as her conversations with students tend to circle back to the same issue. “It’s all about race,” said Jacobs, who is black, and was raised in St. Paul by white adoptive parents. About half of the teachers at Richfield Public Schools have attended Beyond Diversity training, Jacobs said, but facets of the curriculum are entering regular staff development sessions, too. As for the three-day Beyond Diversity class itself, “it’s kind of an in-your-face experience,” said Cunningham, describing some of the realizations he made
one end, lowest on the other. Predictably, a pattern developed. “The further down the line you went, the darker your skin gets,” noticed Cunningham, a social studies teacher at Richfield High School. The exercise was part of a class called Beyond Diversity, and it is one way the Richfield School District is working to address the persistent, glaring and common gap in academic achievement between white students and minorities. Educators admit the subject is uncomfortable for many, but now at Richfield Schools, people are talking about race, which is the aim of efforts like the Beyond Diversity training, which Richfield teachers attend through the West Metro Education Program. A dialogue about race is the first step in closing the achievement gap, said RHS African American Outreach Coordinator Jen Jacobs. And it is a gap that “is the No. 1 — or it should be — the No. 1 thing on every educator’s mind,” Jacobs said. Mirroring the statewide trend, minority students in Richfield Schools
during the training last school year as “shocking.” Cunningham said that as he stood on one end of the line-up, on the other end was then-RHS-principal Steven West, who is black. Following West, new high school principal Joshua Fuchs will attend the class this month, and likely will find himself closer to Cunningham’s end of the line during the “white privilege” exercise. “As a white male myself, I know that there are race issues in a sense that I get privileges not only as white, but as a white male, that others do not get,” the administrator admitted. Fuchs recalled one particularly telling instance of the phenomenon. He was an assistant principal at a school in Oakland, Calif., standing in a room with the principal, a Latina woman 20-years his senior. “She was in a business suit and I am in khakis and a button-down,” Fuchs said. Then, he said, a white male entered the room. TALK ABOUT RACE: TO PAGE 9

Southern Minnesota arrest may spell end of ‘man in black’ robberies BY MIKE HANKS – SUN NEWSPAPERS Police in St. Peter, Minn., have arrested a man that may be the FBI’s “man in black.” The 49-year-old Minneapolis man, arrested Jan. 3 following a bank robbery in Brewster, Minn., is being looked at in connection to a series of bank robberies – including incidents in Bloomington, Eden Prairie, Hopkins and Edina – that may be connected because the perpetrator wore black clothing to conceal his identity. He was charged Jan. 5 with one count of aggravated robbery in the first degree, one count of terroristic threats and one count of theft between $1,000 and $5,000. Rolling Hills Bank of Brewster was robbed at approximately 11:50 a.m. Jan. 3. The male perpetrator was wearing a mask and black jacket and carrying a small black revolver, according to the complaint filed in Nobles County District Court. The man threw a plastic bag on the counter and demanded money, to which a teller complied, giving him approximately $1,800, including “bait bills” that the bank had photocopies of, the comKAREL SMITH 612-986-3704
plaint said. A witness described the man’s getaway vehicle as a silver SUV. Information about the vehicle was given to area law enforcement agencies, including the St. Peter Police Department. Brewster is about 100 miles southwest of St. Peter. A detective from the St. Peter Police Department knew that a silver SUV had been seen in the vicinity of a Dec. 22 bank robbery in St. Peter. Based on the distance between Brewster and St. Peter, the detective estimated a vehicle traveling north from Brewster toward the Twin Cities would pass through St. Peter at approximately 1:15 p.m., according to the complaint. The detective parked along Highway 169 at 1 p.m. to watch for a silver SUV. At approximately 1:11 he saw a silver SUV traveling northbound. After following the vehicle and calling for assistance from another officer the silver SUV was stopped. The officers asked the driver to exit his vehicle and noticed that his hands were trembling. The man consented to a search of his vehicle. Inside the center console of the vehicle police found a large amount of loose currency and a handgun, accord-

ing to the complaint. The man was arrested and taken to jail, where he was questioned about the Brewster robbery. During the questioning he willingly discussed details pertaining to the Brewster robbery, according to the complaint. A search of the vehicle turned up a mask, gloves and a cap gun, as well as $10 bills that matched the bait bills from Brewster, the complaint noted. If convicted of robbery the man faces up to 20 years in prison and a $35,000 fine. He faces up to five years in prison and a $10,000 fine if convicted of theft and up to one year and one day in jail or a $3,000 fine if convicted of terroristic threats. The man’s bail was set at $300,000 with conditions that he does not leave the state without the approval of the court. He was also ordered to surrender his passport, according to Nobles County Attorney Gordon Moore. Several bank robberies throughout Minnesota have been attributed to the man in black. On Dec. 7 Premier Bank of Bloomington was robbed by a white male wearing a black ski mask and a black leather jacket. A man wearing a dark ski mask also attempted to rob a Richfield Bloomington Credit Union branch in Bloomington Nov. 9, but left the bank empty handed. A man wearing a black mask and black knit hat was linked to three April 26 incidents in Bloomington, Eden Prairie and Northfield. The first incident was in Eden Prairie, moments before the bank was scheduled to open at 8:30 a.m. A man standing in the rain had been knocking on the door of United Educator’s Credit Union. When an
employee opened the door for the man he turned around and displayed a handgun. He went inside the bank and demanded cash from a teller. Upon leaving the bank with an undisclosed amount of cash a dye pack exploded, and currency was recovered in the bank’s parking lot. At approximately 9:15 a.m. a man entered the same Richfield Bloomington Credit Union branch that was robbed on Nov. 9. The man walked directly to a teller and displayed a handgun, demanding cash. The teller walked away from the counter and the man left without obtaining money. At approximately 10:15 a.m. a man entered a Wells Fargo branch in Faribault. He approached a teller and displayed a handgun, demanding cash. The teller complied and the man demand more money, to which the teller also complied. In each incident the man was seen leaving the area on foot. On Nov. 4 a man wearing a black mask and black hooded sweatshirt approached a teller at First National Bank of the Lakes in Richfield at 9:20 a.m., displayed a handgun and demanded cash from two tellers before fleeing in a white sedan.
A man in tan A Hopkins bank robbery was also attributed to the man in black, except on Dec. 5 the perpetrator wore a tan jacket. Wearing a black ski mask, a man entered the Hopkins branch of U.S. Bank shortly before 6 p.m. and approached a teller. With gun in hand, the man demanded cash. The teller complied and the man fled the bank.
PUBLIC SAFETY For Dec. 29-31, the Richfield Police Department answered the following calls: Dec. 29 – A male was arrested at 9:45 a.m. for trespassing at 7610 Penn Ave. S. At 12:46 p.m. a female reported being the victim of a swindle by a perpetrator she met online. An officer took a report of identity theft at 3:55 p.m. The victim said her purse was stolen from a vehicle in Minneapolis, and that she had received letters in the mail stating that unknown persons were opening accounts in her name and attempting to cash checks from her closed account. Dec. 30 – A burglary was in progress at the Short Stop gas station when officers responded to the scene at 5:17 a.m.
Suspects had fled when officers arrived. An undetermined number of items were taken from the store. A vehicle driven by a 19-year-old male crashed into the front yard of 7501 Pleasant Ave. S. shortly before 10:45 p.m. The driver’s reported blood-alcohol concentration was .24 percent. He was charged with third degree driving while intoxicated. Police impounded his vehicle. Dec. 31 – Four juveniles were passed out due to alcohol consumption when officers responded at 11:12 p.m. to the scene at 7038 4th Ave. S. The juveniles were transported to Fairview Southdale Hospital. One juvenile was issued a citation.

Seizures Are Serious, And So Are We Why spend money twice when you can work directly with first?
BY ANDREW WIG – SUN NEWSPAPERS The occasional “lost dog” poster can break the tender heart of a stranger, especially during the holidays. On Christmas Day, a seven-year-old Chihuahua named Elvis almost had his snout posted around Richfield in another one of those sad notices. But for Elvis and his owners, this Christmas was a forgiving one. “It was truly our Christmas miracle,” said Richfield resident Kim Houle, who was away with her husband and two grown sons, visiting family in grand Forks, N.D., when the drama unfolded back home. It was 9:30 p.m. Christmas Eve, and Elvis was staying with a caregiver in the Centennial School neighborhood of Richfield, but the tiny dog escaped into the night. His temporary caregivers searched until 3 a.m., but to no avail, Houle said. They called the police, with no immediate luck. “They looked and looked, and the police hadn’t heard from (Elvis),” said Larry Houle, Kim’s husband. At this point the Houles had no idea of the developing emergency. “The next day (the caregiver) was making copies of fliers to put around the neighborhood,” Larry said. But finally, before afternoon, a stranger found Elvis about a block away from his boarding house. “They chased him around,” Kim said. A man had him cupped inside his coat as he waited to turn over the critter, she added. But the details of Elvis’s rescue are all hearsay, and that is the Houles’ point. They never met the rescuers. “We just want them to know that they made a dif-

Seven-year-old Elvis, a Chihuahua, got lucky on Christmas after he became lost as his family was out of town visiting relatives. The weather was mild and forgiving for the under-insulated pooch, and a stranger cared enough to stop and deliver him to safety in what his owners called a “Christmas miracle.” (Submitted photo) ference,” Kim said. “Elvis is everything.” Kim had never owned a dog before the family rescued Elvis from a shelter about three years ago, and she knows her first experience as a canine owner could have ended prematurely. “I mean, here’s this little Chihuahua,” she said. “Thank God it wasn’t 20 below.” Instead, in keeping with this winter’s trend, it was rather mild. The Houles also acknowledge it was not only the favorable weather conditions that saved Elvis. Someone had to stop and care enough to snag the skinny, bug-eyed animal. “I really would like to shake the guy’s hand,” Larry said. The Houles are inviting that Good Samaritan, whoever it is, to call 612-8692481, so they can say thanks.

Hey now, have you heard about boot camp? We’re going to learn about the Marines, all of them, including you BY DANIEL CALLAHAN AND CHRIS DILLMANN – SUN NEWSPAPERS So you may have heard we’ll be in San Diego this week. Well, maybe you haven’t, but here’s your chance to learn all about it. We’re going to San Diego at the behest of the U.S. Marine Corps to cover the Marine Corps Educators Workshop, an annual five-day event wherein educators of various and
sundry sorts gather in San Diego to learn more about the Corps and what their students who join the service might expect. A number of educators from the Twin Cities have been selected to attend, and we’re going to tell you all about it. You can follow along and see how things are going on our blog, “Dan & Chris Go To Boot Camp,” on www.MinnLocal.com. We’ll be posting daily updates with photos and stories from the trip, documenting the experiences of local teachers along with Marine recruits from the metro as they experience boot camp. But the fun doesn’t just stop
there. Oh no, it sure doesn’t. We also want to hear from Marines — active duty or retired — about your time in the Corps. What was it like? How did it change you? Would you do it again? We want to know everything.

‘Boneheaded’ bridal dress destruction or business decision?
Richfield Schools could benefit from corporate partnership
Closed Edina bridal shop destroys unsold dresses to much dismay
To the editor: The community of Richfield is indebted to Ernie Lindstrom for his past and present dream and passion to maintain Richfield Public Schools as a stellar district. Serving as the co-chair of the first successful referendum in Richfield in 1977 along with Gertrude Ulrich, a dream which some apparently would say was a “nightmare” became a reality, and the excellence of Richfield Schools continued in the form of support for the Richfield students and staff. Are partnerships between public schools and business a “misguided dream”? Ask the students and staff in the Austin, Minn. Public Schools who are currently benefiting greatly from a partner-

High school students in science are experiencing state of the art science rooms and equipment, and middle school students are enjoying an addition to the school because of this dream between the District and the Hormel Foundation. Is a vision of partnerships and collaboration with business and other entities worth pursuing when the results make a difference in the lives of Richfield students and staff ? The answer is YES. Thanks Ernie, Gertrude, George Karnas, the late John Hamilton and many others, past and present in Richfield who have continued to support a strong vision for Richfield Schools and the community of Richfield. BY KATIE MINTZ – SUN NEWSPAPERS I love a good bargain, part by necessity and part for the thrill. The majority of my closet is filled with decent items scored on the cheap at consignment shops and thrift stores. For me, there’s nothing like flipping through racks of secondhand clothes to discover a $5 Jean Paul Gaultier sweater someone else bought for at least 100 times the price. Thanks for that one, Arc’s Value Village in Richfield. Usually, delight at my own luck fades to shock – People actually spend this much on a
piece of clothing? – then to dismay – And then they get rid of it? – and finally, back around to gratitude. Well, at least they didn’t just throw it in the trash. So you’d think I’d be especially taken aback by the big story last week that an Edina bridal shop destroyed gowns worth thousands of dollars. All 19 Priscilla of Boston locations across the country, including the 50th and France outpost, closed their doors in the last days of 2011. In Edina, leftover dresses were spray-painted Dec. 30 with big red Xs in public view before being tossed in a Dumpster. I came across the story as it lit up my Twitter feed back at work from the New Year holiday. Other people were certainly outraged. DRESSES: TO PAGE 7

Dresses
But should they have to apologize? I am not condoning the defiling of dresses said to be worth thousands, however, I think there are plenty other areas of waste that go without the same level of fury. Hotel rooms empty at nightfall aren’t opened to people who could use the shelter. Movies, plays and concerts don’t give away seats still open on the day of the show. Restaurants and bakeries throw out uneaten goods. I sometimes let food in my own fridge go bad even though there are starving children in Africa. I, and probably you, would not do what David’s Bridal did. Really, who thought it was a good idea to blatantly squander something as sentimental as a wedding dress outside in daylight on a Friday in a busy shopping area? But it was their – and the designer labels they work with – business decision to destroy unsold dresses to prevent resale. Apparently, its not uncommon for high-end brands to ruin their goods rather they are offered at a large discount in a dingy bargain basement, cheapening the idea of luxury that many of their customers have bought into. And I guess I can understand that. Imagine if every time you needed a hotel, you stall until the midnight hour when vacant rooms are offered up free, or if you waited to buy that designer dress you covet because you knew inevitably it’d show up at the local outlet. Well, eventually, I’d bet those companies would go out of business for lack of full-paying customers. And then how would I find my bargains at the thrift store?
From page 6
Links to local media reports were accompanied with messages calling the move “heartless,” “disgusting,” “so, so wasteful,” a “boneheaded corporate decision” and “a bad PR move.” Some said “shame on you,” “this makes me sick,” and “sad they didn’t think of others in need.” I’ll admit, while I’m not in the market for a wedding dress, if I came across a good one for the right price, I might buy it just for the deal. But better yet, as many said, the dresses could have gone to a number of nonprofits that help provide special moments for women in need. Priscilla of Boston parent company David’s Bridal, in statements to media, said the store does donate quality gowns to a variety of charitable causes, but not dresses that are damaged or in poor condition. Later it said contractual agreements with some designer labels prevent them from donating unsold dresses. By the end of the week, after the news made it all the way to “The Today Show,” David’s Bridal released a public apology stating it understood the anger and frustration expressed about the incident. It said it would do better next time. “David’s Bridal has already begun bringing together all of the remaining Priscilla of Boston gowns to evaluate them and ensure that they are donated to our charitable partners wherever possible,” the apology read, in part.

30 years, ECM acquired additional newspapers. Andersen, son of the late former governor, said ECM believes many Minnesotans agree with investor Warren Buffet who said recently, after acquiring his hometown newspaper -– the Omaha World Herald: “There are still a lot of things newspapers can do better than any other media. Talk about race FROM PAGE 3 “He introduces himself to me at first, and says, ‘You must be the principal,’” Fuchs recounted. “I jokingly said, ‘No, I’m the secretary, and walked out.”
A changing complexion “We look more like the world than most people assume or realize, despite the fact that this is a country that has based most of its foundation on white culture,” Fuchs said. But that foundation is shifting. Now, whites, Hispanics and blacks each comprise roughly one third of the population in Richfield Schools, according to Fuchs. It is a system designed for one group, Richfield educators say, that must now be revised. “White men set up the educational system,” Jacobs said, “and white men are the ones who have succeeded.” Concerted efforts to revise that system and close the gap have only just begun. The Beyond Diversity training, for instance, is yet to be fully applied to the classroom. But Cunningham said he has already altered his teaching style since taking

the class, focusing particularly students’ communication styles. “Think about the way people speak,” he started. “There’s a certain way I speak at home and there’s a certain way I speak in the workplace. When I go home, my comfortable, relaxed, nonoffice speak is very similar to the way I speak in the workplace.” Considering this, he continued, “is the way (students) speak when they go home similar to the way they speak in the workplace, or in this case, the school?” Cunningham keeps the question in mind, noting difficulties that may arise, for example, when a Latino student must shift languages between home and school. So Cunningham asks, if a lesson is failing, “is it because they don’t understand the concept, or is it because they don’t understand the way I’m saying it?” This kind of concept, Cunningham said, is something that “the (diversity) class just throws that in your face.” In addressing the achievement gap, black and Hispanic students need “exponential growth,” Jacobs said. “And that takes targeted instruction.” And in doing so, staff must explore the role race plays in their lives, Richfield educators say. “We have to provide the training for our staff members

to begin to uncover some of our hidden biases that I would say we all carry,” Fuchs said. As staff work to take lessons from trainings like Beyond Diversity and apply them in the classroom, it is yet to be seen what specific new teaching tactics will emerge, because historically speaking, the conversation about race in Richfield Schools has just begun. And there looks to be a long way to go. “As a person of color, I don’t know if the achievement gap is going to be solved in my lifetime,” Jacobs said. But talking about it, “that’s the first part.”

Richfield art FROM PAGE 1 this cool stuff that people just drive by and don’t even notice,” said Arts Commission member Kevin Klos, who designed the brochure. The artwork dotting the city, according to Klos, sets it apart from its neighbors. “Richfield is quietly becoming one of the best places in the metro area to see public sculpture and art,” said Klos, who has a degree in studio art. Even long-time Richfield residents, like Jackie Mihalik, may be in for a surprise as they unfold the literature. “I’ve lived here for years; I’ve never known they were there,” said Mihalik, an arts commission member. Like Mihalik, Richfield resident Norman Holen was surprised when told recently of the multitude of sculptures within the city. “I’m not sure I know where that many are,” he admitted. And he was responsible for two of them. Holen, a now-retired Augsburg University art professor, crafted “The Family,” which was installed in 1981 at the northwest corner of the intersection of West 66th Street and Lyndale Avenue South, making it by all accounts the first of Richfield’s new wave of public art. “The Family” is a collection of three

stainless steel, spire-like forms that shoot up in the shadows of the M&I Bank building and City Bella, next to the blare of construction at the former Kmart site. Although it stands at a bustling intersection, a circle of crabapple trees, especially in summer, keeps the edifice relatively hidden — a characteristic it shares with many of Richfield’s other sculptures. Holen’s other work stands just to the south of “The Family,” and again, it is tucked away, between apartment complexes The Pines and The Oaks on Pleasant. That work, a steel cutout in the shape of a tree, titled “Arbor Image,” was commissioned as part of the creation of Kirchbak Sculpture Garden, which was built with private funds in 2000. “This is kind of a well-kept secret,” noted Holen’s wife Ilene, as she and her husband walked the garden grounds last week, amid the stone and bronze figures — such as the boulder carom called “Napoleon” and the kneeling gardener, called of course, “Garden.” The “secrets” extend beyond Kirchbak gardens, to other alcoves of Richfield as well. In one corner of the parking lot at Dick’s Sporting Goods, away from regular customer traffic, stands a giant bronze-colored dragonfly, with its double stained-glass wings,

Richfield art FROM PAGE 11 It is a fantastical sight, but those on the Arts Commission wonder how many people actually give it a second glance as they buzz around town. “Who knew about the one down there where you pull into Target and Home Depot (at Cedar Point)?” asked MaryKaye Champa, a city recreation supervisor and Arts Commission liaison. She asks the same question about “The Family” and the dragonfly tucked away at Dick’s. “Does the general person who gets off the bus at 66th and Lyndale realize what beautiful structure is right behind them?” asked Champa, who gathered information for the brochure. The Richfield Public Art Tour features some of the more well-known sculptures, too, like the bench-bound “Mayor Kirsch,” located outside City Bella, or the stone tablets at the Honoring All Veterans Memorial in Veterans Park. But regarding a number of the highlighted works, many of which popped up alongside new developments like Cedar Point Commons and City Bella, the brochure “will be an eye-opener,” Champa said, “because I don’t think they realize how many (sculptures) are here. It was even an eye opener for me.” But when people do open their eyes, according to Klos, they will a find a tiny pocket of the metro area unique in its wealth of frozen abstractions and colorful murals. “I think we’re pretty far ahead with public art versus other cities surrounding us,” he said. Perhaps Richfield has a new claim to fame. “I think for a while Richfield has been searching for an identity,” Klos said. “My hope is these brochures go a long way to help them kind of reach that.”
This is the map featured in the new brochure touting Richfield’s public art. (Submitted graphic)

Spartans are edged in conference swim meet Richfield swimmers post 52 season-best times BY GREG KLEVEN • SUN NEWSPAPERS Richfield lost a close Classic Suburban Conference boys swimming meet to North St. Paul Jan. 5 despite producing 52 season-best swims. North St. Paul claimed a narrow 92-88 victory over the Spartans by placing second and third in the final event – the 400yard freestyle relay. “We had a great meet with North St. Paul,” said Richfield coach Marc Hamren. “The lead changed hands several times and the meet went down to the last relay. “Our 52 season-best times can be attributed to the excitement factor of being involved in close races and the hard work our guys have put in during the first six weeks of the season.” Richfield’s second-place 200 medley relay team was composed of Kyle Odefy, Max Hamilton, Daniel Lokken and Matt Graham. The Spartans’ time was 1 minute, 55.47 seconds. Mohab Eid was first in the 200 freestyle (1:51.77). Nathan Libra and Lokken were fourth and fifth. Andy Petersen and Hamilton finished one-two in the 200 individual medley

The Spartans’ time was 3:38.80. Richfield will host Henry Sibley at 6 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 12, at Richfield Middle School pool. The Spartans will also provide the home site for the Section 2A True Team Championships Saturday, Jan. 14. Competition begins at 9 a.m. points. Octavius Harris and Bear had nine points apiece.
Girls basketball Richfield continues to be one of the powers on the Class 3A girls basketball scene. The Spartans improved to 9-2 with a 71-36 victory over Minneapolis Southwest Jan. 5. Jessica January topped the Richfield scoring chart with 23 points and Hailey Lindblom scored 16 points. Hannah Wise contributed 10 points and Bry Guyton finished with nine points. Sierra Ford-Washington and Ebone Hanspard added six points apiece.
Boys hockey Richfield defeated St. Paul Highland Park 8-3 in a non-conference boys hockey game Jan. 5 as Sam Schrick had a hat trick for the winners. Tyler Martinez scored twice and Mick Dhein, Tim Harris and Drew Saastad had one goal each. Goalie John Meyer made 18 saves. Richfield (5-7-1) lost 4-2 to Henry Sibley Jan. 7. Dhein and Schrick scored for the Spartans. Schrick had two assists and Dhein one. Meyer stopped 10 shots.
Richfield’s Max Hamilton competes in the 100-yard breaststroke. Hamilton is one of the top point producers for the Spartan swimming team this season. (Submitted photo)
