Richfield City Council approves 66th Street revitalization plan BY BOB RINGER • SUN NEWSPAPERS INTERN A long stretch of 66th Street may receive a facelift, thanks to a recently approved revitalization plan. The Richfield City Council gave its stamp of approval to the purposed 66th Street Corridor Revitalization Plan, during its July 12 meeting. The project affects the 66th Street corridor between Cedar Avenue and Portland Avenue, though construction would not begin until 2015. The city of Richfield and Hennepin County contracted the firm Damon Farber Associates Inc. to conduct a study to determine opportunities to improve the corridor in July 2010. Tom Whitlock, a representative of Damon Farber, highlighted the project’s three major goals, focusing on transportation, use of open space and land use. “From a transportation aspect, we look to improve pedestrian accessibility on the corridor, both along the corridor and across the corridor.” Whitlock said. The plan also includes opportunities

to add on-street bicycle lanes and create on-street parking, according to Whitlock. Focusing on open space, the plan aims to reinforce Veterans Memorial Park as a regional draw, strengthen 66th Street’s connection to neighborhood parks and create semi-public spaces, such as outdoor dining areas, by partnering with private businesses. The plan attempts to efficiently use property that is readily available. “We want to work creatively with land owners to maximize the use of small parcel sizes,” Whitlock said. “One of the challenges to redevelopment along 66th street is that there are many narrow lots.” The 66th Street Corridor Revitalization Plan would provide opportunity to develop both residential and commercial areas, according to Whitlock. Because 66th Street is a county road, if the project’s pieces fall in to place, Hennepin County likely would carry much of the construction cost. Info: 612-861-9700 (Richfield City Hall).

Who’s getting paid? Area legislators face tough questions following the state shutdown: Did they take payments? Will they seek repayment after the shutdown? BY PAUL GROESSEL • SUN NEWSPAPERS Last week, when Gov. Mark Dayton offered to accept Republican lawmaker’s June 30 budget proposal, with new conditions, it appeared the two-week government shutdown would come to an end. During the shutdown, with thousands of state employees out of work since Dayton and legislators did not agree on a 2011-13 budget by the June 30 deadline, the issue of elected officials receiving pay or not surfaced. In the House of Representatives, legislators who declined payment during the shutdown can choose to get paid retroactively once the shutdown is over, according to Greg Crowe, co-controller for the House. But senators will not have the option of receiving retroactive pay, according to Mary Ferguson with the Office of the Secretary of Senate. For legislators representing Bloomington, Richfield, Edina and Eden Prairie, things were pretty split. All of the representatives, except one, deferred their pay and most planned on not taking retroactive payments after the shutdown. All four of the senators kept their pay. Of course, it’s not always that cut and dry. For those who took pay, some throughout the House and Senate have said they will donate their checks to local charity. Legislators can also get paid for meetings they attend, known as per diem pay. In both the House and Senate, per diem payments were suspended for all legislators during the shutdown. After attempting to reach all legislators representing the four cities of Bloomington, Richfield, Edina and Eden Prairie by phone and most cases email as well, several indicated their intentions regarding retroactive payments and why they did or did not accept payments. Not all could be reached, however. Here’s the breakdown for legislators representing the four cities:

Legislators who received payments during the shutdown • Sen. Geoff Michel, R-41, Edina In an email, Michel said he has not taken per diem pay since the end of the

regular legislative session May 23. “As deputy majority leader in the Senate, and part of the legislative leadership team negotiating with Governor Dayton, I continue to receive the legislative salary of $31,000 per year,” Michel said in an email Wednesday, July 13. • Sen. Ken Kelash, D-63, Bloomington and Richfield Kelash did accept pay because he didn’t notify the proper Senate office in time, he said. He’ll most likely give his pay during the session to a charity in his district, he said. “It’s a symbolic thing, and in the end it wouldn’t matter if we were being paid a little bit of money … or an outrageous amount of money … ” he said. • Rep. Kirk Stensrud, 42A, Eden Prairie; Sen. Dan Hall, R-40, Bloomington; and Sen. David Hann, R-42, Eden Prairie, did accept pay during the shutdown and could not be reached.

Legislators who delayed payments • Rep. Ann Lenczewski, D-40B, Bloomington Lenczewski said she does not plan on taking retroactive pay after the shutdown. • Rep. Keith Downey, R-41A, Edina “As a legislator, I thought it was important for me to share equally in the financial impact that other state employees were also going to experience,” he said. “So, my intention is to share in equal measure, if you will, the same kind of impact in my own compensation that the average state worker would experience.” That includes back pay. If state workers receive it, he would seek the same. If they don’t, he won’t either, he said. • Rep. Pat Mazorol, R-41B, Bloomington and Edina In emails, Mazorol said he did not accept pay during the shutdown and does not intend to receive retroactive pay. • Rep. Jenifer Loon, R-42B, Eden Prairie Loon said when she inquired about not receiving pay during the shutdown, she had to write a personalized note since that wasn’t an option on the payment form. City council approves changes to Lyndale Commons project BY BOB RINGER • SUN NEWSPAPERS INTERN The Richfield City Council approved revisions to plans for the purposed Lyndale Commons apartment buildings, during their meeting July 12. The revisions to the apartment complex, which would be built at the southeast corner of 64th Street West and Lyndale Avenue, were significant enough to require an amendment to the projects proposed plans and the council’s approval. The revised proposal will increase the number of apartment units in the complex from 90 to 94 and may increase the value of the project, according to a report read by Councilmember Fred Wroge. “The revised proposal increases the overall value of the project by creating unites that will rent at a higher rate than the previous plan,” Wroge said. “Unit size throughout the project has increased approximately 15 to 20 percent per unit and the interior amenities of the project have been improved.” The revisions place the structure closer to Lyndale Avenue and further away from nearby residential housing, a change Mayor Debbie Goettel favors. “I’m really pleased to see the set back from the people who live behind them [the proposed complex],” Goettel said.

“That was some of the concerns we had with this from residents.” Other changes to the Lyndale Commons plans include the expansion of an underground parking garage. The revisions call for 17 additional parking spaces. As a result of the expanded underground parking, surface parking would decrease, allowing for additional landscaping, grill areas and pedestrian lighting, according to Wroge. The plans also outline improvements to the structure’s interior and provide for office space and a business center. The size of the complex’s community and fitness rooms would also increase by 200 percent. Though the revised proposal will create units that will rent at a higher rate, 20 percent of the apartment units will be affordable, according to Terry McMeilus of Micheal Development. McMeilus said. “Those rents don’t change for those 20 percent. These units are going to be nicer units, but those rents are rent restricted and they will stay that way and they will be built the same as all the other units.” Micheal Development, the company behind the proposed Lyndale Commons project, hopes to begin construction as soon as September 2011, according to McMeilus.

Shutdown FROM PREVIOUS PAGE “I basically said I want to be treated the same as government employees,” she said. But even if lawmakers decide to give retroactive payments to state workers, she does not intend to take it. She said she normally doesn’t take per diem pay outside of a regular ses-

sion, either. • Rep. Linda Slocum, D-63B, Bloomington and Richfield Slocum delayed her payment and intends to donate it to Cornerstone, a domestic abuse prevention group. • Rep. Paul Thissen, D-63A, Richfield did not accept pay during the shutdown, but he could not be reached. Legislative salary is $31,140 per year. Legislators are paid monthly, which equals approximately $2,595.

Dropping a line to the far side of the world I collect postcards. It’s a habit my friends and family have unwittingly enabled for years by sending me cards from around the country and an addiction I do not plan to give up any time soon. As a bit of a connoisseur of the deltiologist (postcard collecting) community, I regularly peruse postcard-collecting websites to keep up on the latest trends, look at galleries of really interesting collections and generally waste time in one of my favorite ways. So I was shocked the other day to discover an organization that will not only provide you with the address of someone anywhere in the world who might like to get a postcard from you, but will give your address to card writers around the globe, as well. Shocked, I tell you. And ridiculously enthused. I signed

up right away. On a rainy afternoon, I went to the post office to drop my first postcard in the mail. Because it was traveling roughly 4,520 miles to Latvia — yes, Latvia — I wanted to double check that I had affixed enough postage. The postal worker checked my card, assured me the stamps I’d placed on the card were sufficient and promptly stood there reading what I’d written to my new Latvian friend. Strange, I didn’t recall saying, “Good morning, is this enough postage? Oh, and if

you’re feeling bored, why don’t you read this postcard I’m sending. It’s good stuff, I promise. Kisses!” But that’s perfectly all right. See, that’s what I love about postcards: the public intimacy. Each card sent has a message written on it, destined for a single individual, but can be read by a great many people before it ever reaches that person. On a recent trip to Ireland, I dragged my very understanding wife with me to an archeology museum near Dingle in County Kerry. The museum was decidedly unstimulating, but the small box of antique postcards — all of them circulated — in the gift shop? Hmmm, I don’t know. How do you think Robert Ballard felt when he realized he found Titanic? It was a box of messages, some of them more than 100 years old, giving me a

glimpse of those personal yet wide-open messages. Too bad they were so stinkin’ expensive. I’ve always wanted to ask to a simple question of those postal workers that read postcards before they are delivered: Did you get it? Do the postcards you read make sense to you? I can’t say that I recall ever running across someone else’s mail in that way. I wonder what it’s like. I guess this may be just a protracted daydream. Maybe no one cares about the personal lives of people they’ve never met. But that sure won’t stop me from sending postcards to strangers around the world and wondering. Shoot me a postcard: D. Let’s stop talking about the achievement gap Mark Twain (Samuel L. Clemens) is often quoted saying: "Everybody talks about the weather but nobody does anything about it." I would like to borrow his sentiment and apply it to another issue that will soon be slapping us in the face once again as a new school year rolls around. It’s the achievement gap. You’ve no doubt heard of it. Everyone talks about it, but nobody does anything about it. The achievement gap is described as the difference in scoring on standardized tests between students of color and white students. In almost all instances both sets of students are exposed to the same educational process and content. One group excels. The other fails. I should clarify here that some districts have done something about it but very few have made more than cursory

inroads. Pieces of the puzzle are beginning to come together, though. In many of the suburban school districts we cover, the achievement gap numbers are among the worst in Minnesota and are even considered disturbing when compared to national stats. A number of assumptions have been drawn. Those aforementioned districts are designed for and by white affluent administrators, teachers and board members who aren’t particularly concerned about students of color. If they can’t succeed here, they should go elsewhere.

Others who study the issue say the discrimination isn’t intentional but because white administrators, teachers and board members don’t understand the Black experience, as an example, they make judgments that are skewed without knowing it. Another group claims students of color simply aren’t as intelligent as white students, which seems terribly racist on its face. You can find quite a bit about the “intelligence gene” research online. As difficult as it is to comprehend the reasons for the disparity in scores, it is even more incomprehensible that we can’t achieve comprehensive solutions. To paraphrase a famous saying from the ‘60s, “they can send a man to the moon but they can’t eliminate the GAP: TO NEXT PAGE

Gap FROM PREVIOUS PAGE achievement gap.” As I see it, at the heart of the issue is the fact that school districts view the achievement gap as an issue they must wrestle to the ground alone. It’s seldom spoken of as a communitywide issue. Remember “it takes a village to educate a child?” It does. I have yet to see an effective model in which each aspect of the community – from its churches, mosques and synagogues to its municipal government to its service clubs – is engaged to do battle against the achievement gap. We have had a war on poverty, a war on drugs, a war on terrorism. When are we going to launch the war on the achievement gap? If the achievement gap is allowed to continue to exist, the future of our state and nation are at risk. Either we take comprehensive action or we talk the issue to death. The view from here suggests it’s time to pay attention rather than pay lip service.

State shutdown or not, we’re taking a family vacation With most state government operations halted during the shutdown, many families had to cancel vacations to state parks, their reservations useless. But it takes more than a state shutdown to stop the Petersons from going on vacation, I learned recently. My extended family made plans more than a month ago to travel to Father Hennepin State Park on Mille Lacs to vacation together as a group of about 15. Fishing, swimming, hiking, boating – there was going to be something for everyone. With the state shutdown looming, my husband and I anticipated the family reunion could be delayed indefinitely, and we started brainstorming what we would do with our time off. Maybe we would take a trip out of state, or maybe we’d hit the Superior Hiking Trail for a little North Shore backpacking. Well, we weren’t the only ones preparing

for the worst. A relative took it upon herself to plan an alternative: If the state government would fail us, we could go to a park run through the U.S. government instead! Family members were contacted, plans were reorganized, and we had a new trip planned, this one for Stony Point National Forest Campground on Leech Lake, near Walker, Minn. I have to give the Petersons credit; they certainly have resilience when it comes to keeping commitments to family and their

get-togethers. It makes me wonder what would cause the family to actually cancel a family gettogether. Short of a zombie invasion or the end of the world, I’m sure the family would find a way to plan a relaxing getaway. Still, my husband and I bought a state park sticker for “year-round” access to those parks and their campgrounds, and I wish we could have used it. I would have loved to go to a beloved state park, pick up a map, talk with the staff, check out a GPS unit, take a walk down a trail and camp out. I hope other Minnesotans found ways around the shutdown’s ripple effects, as my family was so lucky to do. In all things, it’s best to have patience and remember: This, too, shall pass. That includes politicians’ terms in office. So let’s also remember to cast our votes wisely next fall.

PUBLIC SAFETY Richfield police For the week of July 4-10, the Richfield Police Department answered the following calls: July 4 — An officer was dispatched to the area at Ice Arena in Veteran’s Park, 6345 Portland Ave. S., regarding a fight. The victim told the officer that while he was standing in line for the portable rest room the suspect cut into line and when the victim confronted the suspect, the suspect punched him in the face causing a cut in the victim’s lip. The victim was unsure if he could identify the suspect. A witness described the suspect as a black male wearing a black baseball cap and black shirt with white writing on it, possible torn, of an unknown age. The area was checked but the suspect was not found. The police were patrolling Veteran’s Park during the Richfield Hometown Fourth of July events when they were advised that a juvenile male was intoxicated and passed out in the park. Richfield and Hennepin County paramedics responded and he was taken to HCMC. He was also issued a juvenile citation for underage consumption. July 5 — Police responded to reports of property damage at Woodlake Cleaners, 6440 Lyndale Ave. S. and at the Richfield Liquor store, 6445 Lyndale Ave. S. This graffiti is similar and seems to be from the same person who vandalized the retaining wall on Interstate 35 near 64th Street and Girard Avenue. The police observed a suspicious vehicle in the parking lot of the Motel 6 at 67th Street and Cedar Avenue South. One of the occupants was issued a citation for possession of drug paraphernalia. Another occupant was issued a citation for giving a false name to an officer. July 8 — A man reported that on the 6200 block of Blaisdell Avenue South, he was working in a vacant home and heard a noise in the basement. When the victim went to check about the noise, the suspect met him, produced a handgun and then fled the home. The police responded to Menard’s, 7701 Nicollet Ave. S., on a reported bike theft. The victim stated she had locked her bike to the bike rack and was only in the store for 10-15 minutes. When she retuned the lock had been cut and the bike, valued at $300, was gone. July 9 — Officers responded to the 200 block of 73rd Street West for a report of a car prowler. The officers located the suspect and arrested him for tampering with a motor vehicle. The suspect was transported to Hennepin County Jail. An officer was dispatched to the 6200 block of Knox Avenue South regarding graffiti on the south side of the sound wall adjacent to Highway 62. The cost of repair is estimated at $100. July 10 — Police were dispatched to the 7700 block of Penn Avenue South on a report of a female in crisis. The female had been hallucinating that her neighbors were sewn into the seats of their truck. She had broken into the truck and sliced up the seats believing she was cutting them free. The estimated damage is valued at $2500. The suspect was taken to the Hennepin County Medical Center Crisis unit and placed on a 72-hour hold. An officer was sent to the 7300 block of Logan Avenue South on a delayed burglary to a garage. An unknown person entered the victim’s detached garage and took a bike valued at $400. There are no witnesses or suspects at this time.

You can strike it rich with ‘The Gold Guys’ By REBECCA KORTUS Special to the Stillwater Gazette

“All that glitters is not gold.” William Shakespeare wrote that more than 400 years ago and it remains apropos today, especially if you’re thinking about selling your gold jewelry and looking to turn a tidy profit in today’s red-hot gold market. But first, what do you know about selling jewelry? Where do you go? Who can you trust? That’s where Joe Beasy and Shane Maquire of The Gold Guys can help. They’ve designed a business model based on trust and fairness for selling precious metals in familiar mall-like settings. They’ll guide you through the selling process without any added pressure or expense in an open and relaxed atmosphere. The Gold Guys formula is simple; bring in your gold chains, bracelets, class rings, cuff links or any of your precious metal including silver. First, it’s tested for authenticity and karat content then weighed right in front of you and not carted off out of sight to a back room where you don’t know what’s going on. You’re quoted a price based on that morning’s London’s gold market and if you agree to sell, they will pay you on the spot. “You’re in control of your transaction from start to finish. We show you how it works. We make an offer. You accept and then you’re on your way,” Maguire said Based in Minnesota, The Gold Guys started

three years ago and now have more than 11 stores in California, Nevada, Hawaii and Iowa. Their success has enabled them to expand globally and they’re currently in the process of opening a store in Bucharest, Romania. Entrepreneurs Beasy and Maguire met 20 years ago and have been business partners and friends ever since. With advice from colleagues about the bullish gold market and their entrepreneurial expertise they came up with their successful concept. “We’re idea guys,” Beasy said. “We saw the storm clouds on the horizon for the economy and thought how can we parlay the gold market into something. That’s how The Gold Guys was born.” The Gold Guys mission statement stresses the importance of exemplary customer relationship and service and paying the highest price for your gold. As a result, has earned them the 2011 Gold Award from Top Ten Reviews, an online consumer review and rating service beating out several well-known national contenders for the honor. “We’re proud of our number one ranking with Top Ten Reviews. It’s like getting an academy award,” Beasy said. The Gold Guys offers mobile services for customers for whatever reason can’t make it to their stores, mail-in service and their popular gold parties. Gold parties are similar to other home sales parties but without the dreaded sales pitch and oftentimes, reluctant guests. The Gold Guys pro-

vides email invitations and wine and cheese for 10 or more guests. Invitees bring their jewelry to your home where a company representative does all the work. The host receives a percentage of the sales and the guests go home happy with money in their pockets. Gold parties are also a dynamite idea for fundraisers and charities. Charity work is a huge part of The Gold Guys commitment to the communities they serve. Beasy and Maguire are active with the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation, the Susan G. Komen Race For the Cure, the Hawaii food bank and many other notable charities. The Gold Guys have recently shot a pilot for a reality television similar to Pawn Stars on The

History Channel and are currently shopping it around to the networks. This recent high-profile endeavor will take The Gold Guys to another level in their already successful business. With gold prices at an all-time high, now is the time to gather up your unwanted gold jewelry that’s been stashed away in your drawer, jewelry box or perhaps in an old sock long forgotten stuffed in the back of your closet. All you have to do is bring it in to The Gold Guys and you’ll walk away with some cash in your pocket or you can take Maguire’s advice, “Turn your old jewelry in and go out and buy gold coins, because now, you’re preserving your wealth. Gold is the real currency of the world.”

What’s next for the former Lyndale Garden Center? City council work session focuses on future of site BY BOB RINGER • SUN NEWSPAPERS INTERN Decreased property values and uncertainty regarding the future of the Lyndale garden center dominated the conversation, during a special Richfield City Council work session. The special work session, held prior to the regular council meeting, featured a somewhat heated back-and-forth between Councilmember Fred Wroge and Coleen Carey, the president of the Cornerstone Group, July 12. The session’s conversation focused on the decreased property value of Kensington Park development and the future of the former Lyndale Garden Center, two of Richfield’s more prominent properties. Both the Kensington Park development and the garden center are owned by the Cornerstone Group. “The market conditions at Kensington have changed pretty dramatically over the last few years,” Carey said. “A couple years ago we had an appraisal in 2008 and the property was appraised at $9.3

million. It has more recently been appraised at something less than $4 [million].” The Kensington development lost five tenants, during a time in which the Lyndale Avenue bridge in Richfield was under construction, according to Carey. “When we replaced four of the five, we did it at dramatically lower rents,” Carey said. “That is part of why the appraised value has gone down so much. The new tenants aren’t able to pay the kind of rent the old tenants were paying.” However, Wroge did not accept that the bridge construction was a legitimate excuse for the Kensington development’s struggles. “You blame the bridge on the problem, instead of the parking, the issues of when you decided to build, the city allowing you to build it the way you did,” Wroge said. “You’re blaming everybody else except for the structure itself. Everybody else stayed in business through that and through the 76th Street bridge.” In 2009, Carey and the Cornerstone group began talking to their lender about ways to modify the Kensington development mortgage. The Cornerstone

group then looked into finding an investor to help ease their financial burden. The group secured an investor who agreed to a buy into the mortgage at a reduced amount. However, a deal between the lending bank and the investor fell apart at the last minute, according to Carey. Following the deal’s collapse, the mortgage lender, CW Capital, held a sheriff sale of the property Friday, June 24. The sheriff sale activated a shift of the matter to a different staff member within CW Capital, a change that will delay a resolution to the Kensington matter, according to Carey. The Kensington development’s issues have caused some council members to question the Cornerstone Group’s ability to move forward with plans to refurbish the garden center site. “My point is, how I go to the 70-yearold lady down the street, saying, ‘Well Kensington didn’t do well but you have to understand it was the economic conditions, it wasn’t just management?’” Councilmember Pat Elliot said. “We are faced with the same situation. It is not

our money, it is the citizens’ money and I don’t think I am doing my job to say we are going to roll the dice. I love your ideas. I love what is going on, but the commitment of money is something I’ve got to justify to my constituents.” Carey attempted to reassure the city council about her ability to sustain the Lyndale Garden Center project, citing her success in maintaining properties like the Kensington development. “If you look at the reports that the investor has done, every time they do a property inspection report, I get excellent marks for how well it’s maintained,” Carey said. “It’s the market. It’s not how I manage it.” Plans for the Lyndale Garden Center development include anchor spaces for traditional businesses and flex space for uses like a winterized version of a farmers market. The Cornerstone group plans to utilize the original garden center structure, according to Carey. Though the discussion seemed confrontational at times, city council members, including Mayor Debbie Goettel, commended Carey for her efforts and plans to revitalize the Lyndale Garden Center.

Woman takes issue with proposed Richfield bandshell project BY BOB RINGER • SUN NEWSPAPERS INTERN Talk of bringing a bandshell to Richfield was met with resistance at the new city hall as a local woman spoke out against the proposed project. Heidi Gaibor, a Richfield resident, voiced her concern about the cost of building a public bandshell in a difficult economic climate, during the Richfield City Council’s meeting Tuesday, July 12. Gaibor argued that the bandshell was an example of unnecessary spending that would place an additional burden on Richfield’s taxpayers. “There’s no doubt that it would be nice to have a bandshell or amphitheatre and that indeed there would be benefits to the community,” Gaibor said. “However, our small city is just now beginning to pay $22 million for a new

municipal building, which I’m guessing will take more than a year or two to do.” Gaibor suggested a bandshell or amphitheatre could be privately funded instead. Gaibor did not seem to oppose the project’s timing rather than the idea itself. “Rather than saddle Richfield’s taxpayers with a ‘want’ rather than ‘need’ project at this time of economic hardship for so many, let’s either put it on a list of wants for some day when we have a surplus of money or look at the private alternative,” Gaibor said. Mayor Debbie Goettel thanked Gaibor voicing her opinion to the council.

Science and engineering museum moving to Bloomington BY MIKE HANKS • SUN NEWSPAPERS Long before there were science, technology, engineering and mathematics intensive schools, Rebecca Schatz identified a need to bring engineering education to children. There are many science museums aimed at children throughout the country, but a place that teaches the principles of engineering, “making stuff that works,” was hard to find. As an engineer for a hightech company, Schatz began channeling her energy into what would eventually become a full-time, not-for-profit museum providing a hands-on experience for children. The Works, which traces its roots to 1995, is leaving its home of several years, the Edina Community Center, and moving to Bloomington. The Works will remain in Edina through Sept. 3 before beginning its move to a former office building near 98th Street and Lyndale Avenue South in Bloomington. The museum is expected to

Fans dress up for final ‘Harry Potter’ movie Richfield 4-year-old Cameron Ford is congratulated by mom Tamika Ford and baby brother Jayden Alvarado-Ford for being the male winner in the “Harry Potter” look-alike contest Thursday, July 14, at Southdale Center in Edina. Cameron, dressed as character Dobby, was among several who came in costume to celebrate the final installment in the “Harry Potter” series released 12:01 a.m. Friday. He didn’t stay for the showing, which was past his bedtime. Southdale Center marketing assistant Amy Siegel, a “Harry Potter” fan, said the mall planned several activities for the movie release “because we knew there was going to be a ton of hype.” (Photo by Katie Mintz • Sun Newspapers)

Rosemount girl wins scouting award for bat project Honored for building bat houses in Richfield parks BY HANNAH LUND • SUN NEWSPAPERS INTERN Thanks to Rosemount Girl Scout Meghan Sable, bats in Richfield have another choice of lodging besides the belfry. The 18-year-old recently created bat houses in Richfield’s Veteran Park and Lake Park, and was one of 136 girls in the River Valley division to receive the Girl Scout Gold Award. The Gold Award is the highest Girl Scout honor, requiring one to four years of planning, preparation, prerequisites, research, project implementation and community education. It must address a community issue and fix it in an original and sustainable way. For Sable, inspiration came in the forms of the often-feared cave dwellers. “We live in Minnesota, the state of

mosquitoes,” she said. “I’m a camper, so I’m familiar with them, but I think bats would be a good way to control mosquitoes without using pesticides.” Through her research, Sable discovered that one bat could eat 1,000 mosquitoes per hour, which she estimates could be up to 8,000 mosquitoes in a single evening. Hoping to offer an alternative for pesticides, she built six bat houses to encourage bats to stick around at night. “This is an eco-friendly solution that gives bats a place to live,” she said. “Everyone’s afraid of bats, but they tend to avoid humans and would rather be living in their own homes than in human dwellings.” To give bats their own homes, Sable and her family constructed the bat houses and nailed them high on trees throughout the parks. Each one has several two-inch slots for bats to sleep and remains unpainted, a more natural color that Sable hopes will attract more bats

down the road. Creating a solution to pesticides, researching and building bat houses were not all that Sable did for her Gold Award. A Girl Scout Gold Award hinges on how it can help the community after the Girl Scout leaves. To make her project more sustainable, Sable hosted an informational presentation geared toward dispelling bat-myths and teaching participants how to build their own bat houses. “There are a lot of misconceptions about bats,” Sable said. “For instance, not all bats have rabies. It’s not as big of a problem as people think, and they’d actually be very helpful in the community.” Learning bat-facts will help Sable’s community welcome the winged nightcreatures into the new houses. Each participant also built his or her own bat house. After her presentation, 18 smaller bat houses joined the community, which

means that Sable’s project will extend beyond the Richfield parks she visited for her own houses. “It’s great to see these girls gain leadership skills and grow as they help the community,” said Girl Scout Program Specialist Nicole Huebner. “They’re not just volunteering around the community; they’re finding the root cause of a problem and fixing it themselves. We’re very proud.” After 12 years in Girl Scouts, Sable is also proud to have done something that will benefit the community and make a difference for years to come. “I just want to give [bats] a place to be,” Sable said. “They’re around, but people just don’t notice them. I look forward to the day that they’ll be a bigger part of our lives.” Through Sable’s work and the promise of fewer mosquitoes down the road, the nighttime visitors will hopefully be visitors no more.

A Cub Scout Community: BY ALLY SERACKI • SUN NEWSPAPERS INTERN Cub Scouting makes a difference in boys’ lives for many reasons; building their character and teaching them to work with others have been among the most important. Being part of Den 6, within Pack 66, is no exception. Pack 66 is sponsored by St. Bernard’s Catholic Church, St. Paul. Den 6 is relatively new and was formed through an effort of St. Bernard’s volunteers to reach out to their refugee community. For the den of 10 boys, all originally from Southeast Asia, not only has Cub Scouting helped them reinforce relationships but it has also helped them break down language barriers. For Den 6, specifically, Scouting has reiterated a lot

of what they learn in school, but through experience. “We trick kids to learn … through having fun,” said Vincent Haen, adult leader for Pack 66. Having the Scout uniforms connects them as well. “When they put on the uniforms, it makes them feel united,” Haen added.

Boys thankful for donations For Den 6, each family’s general economic situation is, as Haen would describe, “your typical refugee story.” What some children may take for granted, these boys cherish and appreciate. Haen described a time when the boys

19

Support less fortunate youth by donating used uniforms

needed water boots for an outdoor activity. They received boots, free of charge, that some boys might refuse to wear. But the Den 6 boys didn’t care if the boots were pink as long as their feet stayed dry. On a case-by-case basis, a Scouting office determines through a uniform exchange what donated uniforms to give out to dens for free and reduced prices. All of Den 6 is receiving discounted or free uniforms. Especially for the families who could not otherwise afford it, the assistance is a relief. Though many of the boys’ parents do not understand a lot about Cub Scouting, they realize it is getting their sons involved in something that is crucial. “Parents like getting them in the community,” Haen said.

Supporting the uniform exchange program is easy during the month of July. Used uniforms may be dropped off at all 25 Pilgrim Cleaners locations 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Friday and 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday. Find locations at pilgrimdrycleaners.com. Uniforms are also accepted at the Gabbert Scout Service Center, 5300 Glenwood Ave., Golden Valley, and the Hulings Scout Service Center, 393 Marshall Ave., St. Paul, 8 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Monday through Saturday. Financial contributions should be sent to Northern Star Council BSA, Attn: Kent York, 5300 Glenwood Ave., Golden Valley, MN 55422. MARK YOUR CALENDAR Eden Prairie will be the host city for the state American Legion baseball tournament Friday, July 29, through Monday, Aug. 1. Games in the 16-team, double-elimination tournament will be played at Round Lake Stadium and Miller Park in Eden Prairie as well as Braemar Park in Edina.

Firemen’s tourney provides heated competition BY GREG KLEVEN SUN NEWSPAPERS

District Legion playoffs Six teams from the South Hennepin League, six from the North Hennepin, two from the North End League and two from Wright County will vie for state tournament berths during the Tenth District playoffs Thursday, July 21, through Sunday, July 24, at Wintercrest Park in Coon Rapids. Eden Prairie, the defending state champion, is among the district favorites along with Edina and Wayzata from the South Hennepin and Coon Rapids, Osseo and Maple Grove from the North Hennepin. “It should be a pretty strong field,” said South Hennepin League director Gene Berg. “You’ve got the defending state champion, Eden Prairie, a team that finished second in the Legion World Series last summer, and the North Hennepin has three very competitive teams.” A number of outstanding pitchers will have a say in the tournament outcome. Among them are Adam Bray and Tyler Ruemmele of Eden Prairie, Paul Voelker of Wayzata, James Dean of Edina, Tim Shannon of Hopkins, Pete Wenker of Maple Grove, Sam Windle of Osseo and Logan Shore of Coon Rapids. The top four finishers in the Tenth District tournament will advance to the state tournament in Eden Prairie July 29-Aug. 1.

Town team playoffs Bloomington, Minnetonka and St. Louis Park are best bets to earn first-round byes in the Riverview Amateur Baseball League playoffs. Those clubs currently hold the top three places in the standings. Edina is fourth in the standings and Hopkins is fifth. Both of those clubs would most likely play in first-round series beginning July 26 at local sites. In each series, the team with the higher seed plays two games of the three-game series at home. Dates for the three state-qualifying series are Aug. 2, 4 and 7.

Urban Wildland races Registration is open for the Urban Wildland 5K and half-marathon races. The events are Saturday, Aug. 6, at Veterans Park in Richfield. The half-marathon will begin at 7 a.m. and the 5K starts at 7:15. Runners may register at active.com. – COMPILED BY JOHN SHERMAN

The action was as heated as the high temperatures and humidity surrounding the 53rd annual Firemen’s/Virg Ellrich Memorial Slowpitch Softball Tournament July 14-17 at Valley View and Dred Scott fields in Bloomington. A record 160 Class A through Class D teams participated in the double-elimination tourney. Temperatures reached the mid-90s and dew points were in the 70s. But the muggy conditions did not spoil the weekend for 20,000 players, spectators and volunteers who were part of the fourday event sponsored by the Bloomington Knights of

Columbus. The tournament attracted teams from Canada, Wisconsin, Nebraska, Iowa, Wyoming, North and South Dakota, Maryland and Nevada. Bloomington and surrounding communities such as Edina, Eden Prairie, Richfield, Burnsville, Apple Valley and Lakeville supplied local entrants as well as outstate Minnesota towns. There were six tournament brackets in men’s, women’s and co-rec divisions. Tournament results will be published in next week’s Sun-Current.

Eden Prairie 6-year-old boy records hole in one Pranay Singh also wins Pepsi Little People Golf Championship age group title BY GREG KLEVEN • SUN NEWSPAPERS

Eden Prairie 6-year-old golfer Pranay Singh proudly displays the ball he picked out of the cup after recording a hole in one on the 90-yard seventh hole at Waters Edge Golf Course June 16 in Shakopee. He used a 6-iron for his ace. (Submitted photo)

Recording a hole in one is a lifetime dream that most golfers never realize. However, Eden Prairie golfer Pranay Singh managed to achieve his ace while still young, very young. Singh, a 6-year-old, shot his first hole in one on the 90-yard seventh hole at Waters Edge Golf Course June 16 in Shakopee. Singh just completed kindergarten but has already earned impressive golf honors in a sport he is passionate about. Singh competed against 6- and 7-yearolds at the Pepsi Little People Championships June 21-22 in Quincy, Ill.

Right Way Painting Solutions After one of the most brutal winters we have encountered in the past 30 years, we have all found things that need repair or replacement on our homes. Many of us have needed to put off work being done to our homes do to economic hard times. Many of us also put off projects to save money in case things got worse. Our home values have gone down which makes it hard to even think about selling our homes. The reality is that we have to keep our property in good shape to maintain our values. Painting the exterior of our homes is by far the best value to preserving our wood surfaces and windows. We can also dramatically change the appearance of the inside of our homes by updating colors. Painting woodwork is a very affordable option compared to replacing old trim around our homes. In many older homes our windows are still good, but the old stain and varnish are not holding up any more. You can save thousands of dollars by painting these windows verses replacing windows. Updating your

basement family room can also be as easy as painting the paneling. I’m Paul Moore from Rightway Painting Solutions. I’ve been in the painting business for over 20 years. Being a former Shop Teacher, I have a good background in finishing and wood replacement. We do both residential and commercial painting. We do work for several Town Home Associations, Nursing Homes and Residential Properties. We give our customers great value by being able to not just paint. We replace or repair wood, repair and reglaze older windows and reside areas that need replacement. We also repair decks and re stain decks. On the inside we repair walls, remove wallpaper, enamel wood work and paint paneling. We offer a 2 year labor warrantee on our labor, provide references and we would be happy to give you a free estimate. For all of your painting needs give us a call at 612-8392239.

Competition took place on a par-33 course. Singh finished first out of 30 competitors in the Boys 2B Division. He shot a 5under-par 61 with rounds of 30 and 31. Singh concluded the tournament in style, chipping in a birdie from 15 yards on the final hole. He won his division by four strokes. Last year, Singh placed 21st in the same tournament. Former competitors in the Pepsi Little People Championships include 2011 U.S. Open champion Rory McIlroy. “Pranay wants to golf every day,” said his father, Vivek Kumar. “I come home from work and he meets me on the front lawn with his clubs so I can take him golfing. “I love to go out with him and watch him improve day by day. I caddy for him in most tournaments, but it is a big challenge for me to give him the proper club because his shot distances are changing every month.” Singh, who will be a first-grader at Eden Lake Elementary this fall, enjoys golf but has one phase of the game he likes more than others. “Putting is OK but driving the ball is what I enjoy most, ” he said. Singh is already beating his father and brother Parichay, a 13-year-old. He is encouraging his mother, Richa Singh, to play golf and is eager to offer golf tips, according to his father. Pranay has a busy golf schedule planned this summer. Singh competed in the 6-and-under age group in the Junior World Championships July 12-14 in San Diego. Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson played in the Junior World Championships growing up. Singh finished 21st in his age group a year ago in that tournament. Singh plans to also participate in the U.S. Kids World Championships Aug. 4-6 in Pinehurst, N.C. Singh plays regularly at Waters Edge, a par-30 executive course located at Stonebrooke Golf Club. “Pranay has been playing golf since he started walking, “ said his father. “He would hit plastic balls in the basement all day. “By age 2, he was making good contact with the ball and I started taking him to the driving range when he was 3.” His passions outside golf include chess, basketball and, of course, video games.
