Do you have a question about what soil is better to grow a vegetable garden in verses a flowerbed, or are you curious about what type of wild mushrooms are growing in your yard? The Master Gardners are ready with the answers. “We are people who love to garden and love to go out and help others with their gardens,” Master Gardner and Richfield resident Gordon Hanson said. The Master Gardeners program is a national program with its Minnesota roots growing from the University of Minnesota. Coordinated by the University of Minnesota, each county in the state is equipped with an extension program. With over 2200 Master Gardeners in Minnesota, 300 of which count themselves as members of the Hennepin GARDENERS: TO PAGE 2

Master Gardeners program is so special. According to Hanson, any of the information given by a Master Gardener has been proven with research to be effective and accurate. Armed with information, advice and talents, the Master Gardeners get out in the communities to benefit schools, community gardens, youth programs, environmental education programs, farmers markets and any other organization requesting their help. “There are thousands of dollars worth of volunteering hours invested in the communities of Minnesota,”

At a volunteer tree planting May 27 at Nellie Stone Johnson Elementary, 807 27th Ave. N., Minneapolis, Master Gardener Gordon Hanson of Richfield and Master Gardener Amy Sitze of Minneapolis stand by a newly planted maple tree. A nonprofit called Tree Trust ran the day of tree planting with the expert help from the Master Gardner program. (Submitted Photo) Hanson said. Some of the specific volunteering tasks that Master Gardeners participate with include: • Teaching classes and workshops, • Answering phone inquiries concerning home horticulture, • Assisting with county Horticulture Days, • Teaching and demonstrating horticulture techniques in community and school gardens, • Teaching youth and judging horticulture projects, • Media interviews and articles on horticulture topics, • Speaking to schools and youth groups on gardening topics, • Holding plant clinics at garden centers and farmers markets, • Representing the program at county and state fair exhibits, • Horticulture therapy for both children and adults, • And teaching horticulture in hospitals, nursing homes and retirement centers. Every Saturday, from 7 a.m. to noon, at the Richfield Farmers Market in Veterans Memorial Park, the Hennepin County Master Gardeners set up a table with flyers and handouts with valuable gardening information and give the Richfield community a chance to ask

any and all questions their gardens, lawns and landscaping. “I love going to the Richfield Farmers Market because I see people I know and am able to help people with their gardening needs,” Hanson said. Hanson has been asked all types of questions from how does one control Creeping Charlie — also known as ground ivy — in their yard to what time of year is best to transplant a Bleeding Heart, a perennial flowering plant. Although very knowledgeable, a Master Gardener may not know everything. When presented with a question of which the answer may elude them, Master Gardeners are encouraged to be honest and will put the asker in the right direction for finding the answer, according to Hanson. Most Master Gardeners are not people with horticulture degrees and many do not make their living in the horticulture field, but they have passion and a love for gardening, said Hanson. Becoming a Master Gardener involves three steps. First, the process involves becoming accepted by the local county program. The course is 48 class hours of horticulture training taught by extension educators and university faculty. “The course is a whirlwind of gardening topics. The instruction is really great because it is all the university professors and experts teaching you,” Hanson said. After the course, the candidate must

complete an internship during their first year. The internship includes 50 hours of volunteer time to be completed within the first year of participation. “When your internship is completed, you are given active Master Gardener status,” Hanson said. But being a Master Gardener doesn’t end here. Maintaining the active status requires each member to volunteer no less than 25 hours and partake in at least 12 hours of continuing education each year. “It is a fun program to be a part of. It is very rewarding too,” Hanson said. “This is something you want to do out of love for the subject matter.” For more information, visit hennepinmastergardeners.org. New principal finds home at Richfield High School ‘I will be here as long as Richfield wants to have me’ BY BILLIE JO RASSAT • SUN NEWSPAPERS The new principal at Richfield High School traveled all the way from California to work for the community of Richfield. “I spent my whole life moving around, but now I am finally looking for a place to call home and I will be here as long as Richfield wants to have me,” new Richfield High School Principal Joshua Fuchs said. Graduating in 1996 from Chandler High School near Phoenix, Ariz., Fuchs couldn’t decide what he wanted to do next after being told he was too tall to be a fighter pilot in the United States Air Force. After taking a year off to enter the working world, Fuchs finally decided to attend the University of Wisconsin at La Crosse, where he graduated in 2003 with a Bachelor of Science degree in science and exercise science, also earning his teaching license.

After school, Fuchs received multiple job offers all across the nation, but decided to pack up everything he could fit into his truck and see what Oakland, Calif., had to offer. It was at Oakland Technical High School that he began his career in education. After teaching physical education for four years and demonstrating a clear knack for leadership, the principal Oakland Technical persuaded Fuchs to look into a career in administration. He took the advice and enrolled in the Principal Leadership Institute at the University of California at Berkley. In 2008, Fuchs received his master’s degree in educational leadership. After feeling that Oakland Technical High School had given him all that it could, Fuchs and his fiancée decided they needed a place to settle down as a family. This is what has brought Fuchs to

Right after the drive from California, Fuchs went right to work. “My goal is to get the parents and students input to build a even better program,” Fuchs said. “I expect to be doing a lot of listening this first year.” Making it crystal clear that he will be keeping an open ear, Fuchs will also concentrate on building strong relationships with the families of Richfield High School and the community. “I think the school year will go well if we have a clear message that it is important that we are serving our community and have programs that achieve our children’s dreams,” Fuchs said. Thankful for the opportunity, Fuchs promises that, “I am committed to every student that walks though the doors will have the chance to achieve their goals and dreams.”

Lazy, hazy dog days of summer? Feels like it Post writing this, the temperatures will probably have come down to what most people would consider a reasonable summer temperature. Yet, last week’s heat wave was fun to watch people squirm. Imagine living in Texas, or anywhere in the South for that matter, where a week of temperatures that flirt with the century mark should be welcome. Granted, there are health issues that go along with heat as high as it was, but taking that out of consideration for argumentative purposes – it’s summer. Enjoy the sultry weather while it lasts. Minnesota really is the land of extremes; the temperature swing between the all-time high and low in the state is 174 degrees! Tuesday, July 19, was one for the books.

CHRIS DILLMAN Excelsior/Shorewood Community Editor

It marked the third consecutive day with 80 degree or higher dew points in the Twin Cities; dew point basically measures the moisture in the air. Add a 119-degree heat index (also referred to as “feels like”) at MSP airport, tying the all-time high – though I saw 121 on the Weather Channel app – 88degree dew point in Moorhead, as well as 134degree heat index, the highest ever in the state, and it can be summed up that it was hot! We are, in fact, amid the

“Dog Days of Summer,” which are typically July through early September, and date back to ancient times. The period is named that because of Sirius, the “dog star.” So bring on the heat. Those not so much a fan of the heat usually say something like, “Well, you can always add clothing when you’re cold.” What I say to that is, unless you want to look and feel like Ralphie’s kid brother Randy in “A Christmas Story,” bundling up doesn’t sound too appealing. What does sound appealing is shorts, sandals and a tank top. There’s also the relief factor. When you walk from the heat into a place that’s air-conditioned, there’s instant relief. This, opposed to walking into a building that heated from

minus 20 degrees, where thawing takes much longer. Again, we could be Texas and have triple-digit heat for doubledigit days. Granted, I probably wouldn’t be singing the same tune if I didn’t happen to have an air conditioner. Yet, like extreme cold, extreme heat for too long of exposures can be deadly. Heatrelated deaths top every other death caused by weather combined, so make sure it’s enjoyed in moderation. We all know that weather around here always changes, and since heat like that doesn’t usually last too long up here, I welcome it with open arms. Because before you know it, it’s back to shoveling, snow emergencies and temperatures with a minus in front of the number.

We are not Edina and we do not care to be Edina. We already have laws in this city about trash, but yet, people can jump into my Dumpster on Bryant and throw nails on to our street, because, yes, it is legal for them to dive into my Dumpster. Here is the thing: We run an honest business at

our address and I have paid for the stuff in both of my Dumpsters. So Richfield, since St. Louis Park has the happiest residents, I would suggest you call us, the taxpayers, to let us express our thoughts. Mary Barnes Richfield

Scouting for Uniforms drive tracking behind previous years BY JONATHAN YOUNG • SUN NEWSPAPERS The Boy Scouts’ July Scouting for Uniforms campaign is lagging behind expected collection numbers. There are only a few days of the campaign left. As of July 20, the campaign had only collected about 75 uniforms. That’s one-tenth of the goal of 750 uniforms. This is the fourth year the Boy Scouts’ Northern Star Council has partnered with Pilgrim Cleaners to collect used Boy Scout and Cub Scout uniforms for scouts in need. The Northern Star Council serves the Twin Cities and counties in central Minnesota and western Wisconsin. Bonnie Engler, the president of Pilgrim Cleaners, started the uniform drive after hearing about a similar program in another part of the country. Kent York is a spokesperson for the Northern Star Council. “We’re tracking behind previous years,”

he said. Each year the uniform drive has collected more uniforms than the previous year. The first year it collected 350 uniforms. The second year it collected 560, and last year it collected 564. Through the end of July, uniforms can be dropped off at all 25 Pilgrim Cleaners locations 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Friday and 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday. The nearest location can be found at pilgrimdrycleaners.com. Uniforms can also be dropped off at the Golden Valley Scout Service Center, 5300 Glenwood Ave. or the St. Paul Scout Service Center, 393 Marshall Ave between 8 a.m. and 5:30 p.m. Monday through Saturday. Monetary contributions should be sent to Northern Star Council BSA, Attn: Kent York, 5300 Glenwood Ave., Golden Valley, MN 55422. That’s how Sandy Meyer of Chanhassen explains her close relationship with her twin sister Sally. Growing up in Richfield, the fraternal twins shared a bedroom, a birthday and a unique bond. They were even known as the Walls twins; Walls was the family name.

“It was like having a built-in best friend,” said Meyer, 59. “Even when we were mad at each other, which we were on several occasions, we knew we had the other to depend on.” Meyer’s life changed dramatically when Sally died at age 37 in 1989 from complications of leukemia. Meyer felt abandoned and alone because she had lost her lifelong best friend. Suddenly, she was a “twinless twin.” “I can see that losing a sibling of any kind is very painful,” she said. “But I think the closer bond that twins have from the moment of conception and always doing things together, and just being such an enmeshed part of each other’s lives, is what makes it different.” Meyer began to adjust to her loss after she found other identical or fraternal twins who had lost their twin siblings. She joined the Twinless Twins Support Group International and helped to organize the group’s annual convention July 21-23 in Bloomington. The event attracted about 65 people from the United States, Canada and United Kingdom. While Sandy and Sally were close, they had separate identities. Except for fifth grade, they attended school in separate classrooms. Their mother dressed them

alike until ninth grade, when Sally announced that it was time to dress differently because they didn’t look alike. “[Sally] had all the brains, all the beauty, all the boyfriends,” Meyer said. “We respected each other and loved each other and encouraged each other.” After graduating from the University of Minnesota, the twins remained close and always celebrated their Oct. 5 birthdays together with cake and family dinners. Both twins married. Sally had no children; Meyer and her husband Steve had one daughter, Sharla. In 1989, Sally was diagnosed with leukemia. Sandy donated bone marrow for a transplant, but Sally developed infections from treatments and died after an eight-month battle with the disease. Besides her grief, Meyer had to confront a new identity. “There’s the whole issue of trying to figure out who I was, because ‘we’ becomes ‘me’ and that’s a really complicated thing to figure out,” she said. “I had no idea who I was supposed to be in this world.” Many twins are traumatized by the loss, said Nancy Segal, a psychology professor at California State University, Fullerton, who has researched twins for about 30 years.

Oxboro Dental Care

“It’s very devastating,” said Segal, a twin herself. “Birthdays become days of mourning. You become a constant reminder to everybody else that the twin is not there. People still call you the wrong name, there are all these reminders.” Surviving twins sometimes adopt habits or behaviors of the lost twin, perhaps as a way to keep their memory alive, she said. Several trends predict an increase in the twinless twin phenomenon. Currently, the twin birth rate for babies born in Western countries is 1 in 30, up from 1 in 60 in the 1970s, Segal said. Rates will probably rise as women delay childbearing and turn to reproductive technologies like in-vitro fertilization, she said. Segal is a former twin researcher at the University of Minnesota, where she started a twinless twins support group. Meyer joined the group a few years after her sister’s death, and she remembers it as a turning point, allowing her to share feelings and memories with others who truly understood her grief. Memories have become a source of strength for Meyer. She treasures mementoes like Sally’s opal ring and a stuffed “comfort bear” made from scraps of purTWINS: TO NEXT PAGE

At AirBroom Minnesota In Excelsior Can Help How does your chimney look? Are the bricks crumbling? Does it have White or Black exterior staining? Are you afraid to use your fireplace because you’re not sure how safe it is? When was the last time you used it? The professionals at AirBroom Minnesota Fireplace and Air Duct Cleaning in Excelsior can restore both your confidence and your chimney. Did you know that water causes more damage to masonry chimneys than fire? Your chimney, unlike other parts of your house, is constantly exposed to the elements. They are generally constructed of brick, mortar, tile, steel, and iron. All of these materials suffer deterioration as a result of prolonged contact with water. Freeze and thaw cycles so familiar here in the Twin Cities cause stress on the chimney. Water that has penetrated expands and contracts. Left unchecked it will cause interior and exterior damage to your home and masonry chimney. Some of the damage that can be caused includes: 1) spalled and broken exterior brickwork, 2) deteriorated masonry and metal firebox assemblies, 3) rusted dampers, 4) decayed mortar, cracked or missing flue liners, and in the worst case scenario damage to adjoining walls, ceilings, and woodwork. There are three main ways to prevent water damage. 1) Install a chimney cap. This is the most inexpensive measure to prevent water penetration to the flue and inside chimney elements. We sell and install locally manufactured caps for as little as $99. 2) Repair or replace a damaged chimney crown. The crown sits atop your chimney and covers and seals it from the flue liners to the chimney edge. Many chimneys are built with an inadequate crown constructed from common mortar mix. Mortar is not designed for and will not withstand years of prolonged moisture exposure without cracking and chipping which allows water to penetrate the chimney. A proper crown is constructed of a Portland

cement mixture and formed to provide an overhang drip edge. This assures the water will shed helping to prevent erosion in the mortar and brick of the chimneys surfaces. Keeping the crown “watertight” and shedding away from the sponge like masonry elements that the chimney is built of is the most important element to preventing deterioration. At AirBroom Minnesota we use the industry leading line of Saver products to build and repair chimneys. Use of these products allows us to pass on manufacturers material warranties of up to 15 years to our clients. 3) Waterproof your masonry chimney and crown. Most masonry is porous and will absorb large amounts of water. Brick acts like a sponge absorbing water and wicking it to the chimney interior. Products we use are specifically developed for use as waterproofing agents on masonry chimneys. These are vapor permeable – which means they allow the masonry to breath out but not in. This allows water that has penetrated the chimney to escape while preventing additional water from entering from the outside. Non vapor permeable sealers commonly available should never be used because they trap moisture inside actually accelerating deterioration. We use a special permeable sealer with a 10 year consumer warranty to protect your chimney. Doing this before deterioration occurs can save you hundreds or even thousands of dollars in future repairs. Water damage to chimneys is usually a slow subtle process. The problem is generally not obvious until it has become quite serious. Although these prevention measures may cost you a few dollars they can save you a lot more by preventing large future masonry repairs. The Hartmann’s at AirBroom Minnesota in Excelsior offer free no obligation repair estimates in the Western Metro area. Call John, Jim, or Lynda today to arrange a free no obligation estimate. Visit us at AirBroomMinnesota.com or call us at 952.545.2254. As a bonus, repair jobs over $750 scheduled with us prior to August 15th receive $100 off when you mention this article.

The Right Stuff in Richfield On the long hike

At 100 years old, Loretta Sheffland sits in an old family chair. Upon reflection, this same chair once held Loretta’s grandmother as she would read books and tell stories to Loretta when she was a young child. (Photo by Billie Jo Rassat • Sun Newspapers)

On July 28, 1911, Loretta Sheffland was born. In her 100 years of life, Loretta has influenced many people as an active, strong and generous leader. Loretta grew up in a small town out in rural Le Sueur County. In 1928, Loretta moved to south Minneapolis and worked as a secretary at Frigidaire until 1941. To fulfill a passion of hers, Loretta joined the Minneapolis Municipal Hiking Club in 1934 and has been a member since. In the hiking club, she met the love of her life, Juel Sheffland of the Minneapolis Police Department, and

and the Retired Police Association. With all of her volunteering and dedication to the causes that she held so dear, Loretta, always found time to do what she loved most — bake. “Why bake one pie when you can bake two,” Loretta always says. For the past ten years, Loretta has been living at Gramercy Park Cooperative at Lake Shore Drive in Richfield. When her three children, nine grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren are not visiting her, Loretta, spends her days playing cards, reading and baking. “The most rewarding thing to bake is a pecan pie,” Loretta said. But if you ask her what is her favorite baked good to eat, she’ll tell you — chocolate chip cookies.

they were married at St. Luke’s Episcopal Church in 1940. Since her marriage, Loretta has been active in volunteering at St. Luke’s. She has participated on the Trust Corporation Board, which is an eleven neighborhood church board helping with projects such as Meals on Wheels, helping elderly neighbors with outside maintenance and organizing fundraising estate sales. Loretta was very active with the Girl Scouts and was a community school instructor. Loretta and her husband were the pioneers in organizing the first defensive driving classes in Minnesota. School board FROM PAGE 1 munity members could bring,” said Richfield School Boardmember Tom Flood. “The system doesn’t work well unless people get in it.” Rallying for competition, Flood said that the community would benefit with residents running that have different talents, diversities and passions. “If your agenda is specific, this is a great chance to get your opinions out to the community,” Flood said. There are a few requirements to run for election. All candidates must be 21 years of age and a registered voter. Each candidate is required to have been a legal resident of Independent School District No. 280 for at least 30 days prior to the general election. Other than the legal stipulations needed in order to run for a seat on the school board, Richfield schools Supt. Dr. Robert Slotterback advised that anyone interested in running for one of the three positions shouldn’t do it unless they have a passion to help those in the schools and the community. Defined as the governing body of the school district, the school board has various powers and duties specified by their policies. The main duties, according to Slotterback, are to evaluate the superintendent, approve a budget and abide by school board policies. “The school board sets the course for the district and hires a superintendent to follow through,” Slotterback said. As overwhelming and intimidating as the duties of a school board member may be, Slotterback admits that the school board are the rule makers, but the district administration compiles all

the information so the board can make a thoroughly educated decision in the end. Each office is held for a four-year term. During that term, board members are obligated to attend two meetings a month during the nine months school is in session, while for the other three months there is only one meeting each month. Occasionally special meetings and closed sessions will arise through out the year. Within the school board, offices are held for a chair, vice-chair, clerk and treasurer. These offices have special duties. For example, the chair presides over all of the meetings, helps set the agenda and keeps the board meetings running as efficiently as possible. The vice-chair serves when the chair is unable to attend. The clerk keeps a record of the meetings and files all the reports, handouts, agendas and communications relating to the businesses of the board. The principal obligation of the treasurer is to sign any and all of the financial documents. Board members are compensated for their time and dedication with a monthly stipend of $500 each, with a $300 per year addition for the clerk and a $600 per year addition for the chair. According to Slotterback, every community is different in electing the offices with in the school board. Richfield’s method rotates the chair position amongst the board members and takes volunteers for the clerk and treasurer positions. Affidavits for candidacy are available from the school district clerk at the Richfield Public Schools District Office, 7001 Harriet Ave., S. For more information, contact the district office at 612-7986000.

Spotlight on Education “Imagine Your Future”

College-prep checklist for Minnesota Colleges 9th and 10th grades • Take classes that prepare you for education after high school, especially in math, English, science and social studies. Plan carefully with your high school counselor. • Visit your school career center or counseling office to explore information about careers and various colleges and universities. By 11th grade • Call the admissions office and ask for a brochure. • Explore college and university Web sites. • Request more information from the colleges and universities that interest

you. • Schedule campus visits this year and in the fall of your senior year. • Take the ACT or SAT test if you might attend a four-year university. One of these standardized tests is required for admission to a four year state university. (No ACT or SAT tests are required for admission to a two-year state college, but after you are admitted, you will need to take a test for placement in the appropriate classes based on your reading, writing and mathematics skills.) • Consider taking some college courses beginning in 11th grade if you are eligible.

During 12th grade • Make campus visits to colleges that interest you most. • Apply to college. For a four-year university, apply in the fall. For a two-year college, applications are accepted until the college semester begins, but applying early gives you a better chance of getting into the programs and courses you want. You can get an application: - From your high school counseling office. - website www.mnscu.edu - By mail by calling toll-free at 1-888667-2848.

• Apply for financial aid after Jan. 1 of your senior year even if you're not sure which college to attend. Get the free federal financial aid application from your high school counselor, college admissions offices or on the Web at www.fafsa.ed.gov. • Look for scholarships. College admissions offices and high school counselors can help you. Info: http://www.mnscu.edu.

The Richfield Reds American Legion baseball player had a big offensive night during a 9-8, 11-inning district playoff loss to Minneapolis Southwest last week. Jegtvig had a two-run single and two-run homer.

BY GREG KLEVEN • SUN NEWSPAPERS Two Richfield High School soccer players experienced the thrill of playing in the largest youth soccer tournament in the Western Hemisphere. Nate Luttenegger and Michael Jungers were among 13,300 soccer players to participate in the Schwan’s USA Cup tournament July 19-23 at the National Sports Center in Blaine. The Spartan players were members of the Westside United Under-18-19 Division team. Luttenegger and Jungers not only had the opportunity to compete against the world’s best youth soccer players, but they were part of a championship team. Luttenegger, a midfielder, and Jungers, a defender, helped Westside

United win the championship trophy July 23 with a 4-0 victory over North Star Juventas from Canada. Westside United, based in southwest Minneapolis, edged Rio Select of Brazil 10 in the semifinals. “It was my first time playing in the USA Cup and the atmosphere was phenomenal at Blaine,” said Luttenegger, who will be a junior at Richfield High this fall. “We met players from all over the world during the tournament. “Language was a barrier at times, but we all had one thing in common – our passion for soccer. I’m sure it will be one of the greatest experiences of my soccer career.” Luttenegger was one of the younger players on the Westside United squad, but he saw plenty of tournament action at midfield. Jungers, who will be a senior captain for the Spartans this fall, was a workhorse on defense. SOCCER: TO PAGE 24

BY GREG KLEVEN • SUN NEWSPAPERS BY GREG KLEVEN • SUN NEWSPAPERS The Richfield Reds reached the Fifth District American Legion baseball finals before settling for second place. The Reds lost a best-of-three series against Minneapolis Southwest last week at Donaldson Park in Richfield. Southwest defeated Richfield 9-8 in 11 innings of the first game of the championship series. The Reds used four pitchers – Jordan Zoellmer, Josh Zoellmer, Derek Pederson and Cam Dearing. P.J. Peterson doubled in one Reds run in the third, but the Reds fell behind 5-1 in the top of the fifth. Richfield rallied for three runs in the bottom of the fifth. Tyler Jegtvig provided a two-run single and Josh Zoellmer had a one-run single. Jegtvig hit a two-run homer in the seventh. Richfield tied the game 8-8 on a sacrifice fly by P.J. Peterson. Southwest went ahead 9-8 on a run-producing triple in the top of the 11th. Richfield bounced back with a 7-6 victory over Southwest to even the series. But the Reds lost a closely contested 3-2 title game to Southwest. During the regular season, Richfield won the Fifth District League with a 10-2 record and hosted a three-team, sub-district tournament. Holy Angels defeated the Reds 12-8 in the opening round of sub-districts. Richfield scored four times in the third inning. Cam Dearing, Joe Griffin and Dan Beyel had RBI singles. Tyler Klopp and Josh Zoellmer contributed doubles. Jordan Zoellmer started on the mound for the Reds and worked six innings. Derek Pederson, Andre Hill and Andy Petersen pitched one inning each. The Reds recovered from that loss and defeated Minneapolis Post-I 7-2 in the second round. “Corey Fitzgerald threw a complete nineinning game,” said Reds coach David Boie. “He struck out six and allowed only one baserunner in the last five innings.” P.J. Peterson had a two-run double. Jordan Zoellmer came through with two RBI singles. Richfield won the sub-district title with a 6-2 victory over Minneapolis Post I. Andy Petersen and Dearing combined for a two-hitter on the mound. Richfield broke the game open with five runs in the second. Jordan Zoellmer doubled in one run and later scored on an error. Klopp hit a two-run double and scored on P.J. Peterson’s double. Derek Pederson singled in Mick Dhein with a run in the sixth.

Heavy rain plus high heat and humidity kept attendance down at the 53rd annual Firemen’s/Virg Ellrich Memorial Slowpitch Softball Tournament July 14-17 in Bloomington. The 2011 tournament was below its usual total of 20,000 spectators, players and volunteers. But the sticky conditions didn’t reduce the enthusiasm of the 160 Class A through D teams competing in the double-elimination tourney at Valley View and Dred Scott fields. Tournament champions were crowned in six divisions. Local teams fared well in the tourney that attracted teams from Canada, Wisconsin, Nebraska, Iowa, Wyoming, North and South Dakota, Maryland, Nevada and Minnesota. Anytime Fitness of Minneapolis claimed the championship in the men’s Tier I division. Sonny’s from Casper, Wyo., was second and Bloomington’s BBS/Budweiser finished third. A Brooklyn Park team, Dehn Bros., won the men’s Tier II title and the Bryan Rock squad of Prior Lake placed second. Glory Days of Bloomington won the men’s Tier III championship and Eden Prairie’s Jack Daniels squad was runner-up. Glory Days player Tom Hilden, a Jefferson High graduate, was named Tier III Most Valuable Player. Another Brooklyn Park team, Free Agents, won the women’s Tier II cham-

pionship, with Agassiz Underground from North Dakota placing second. Bloomington’s Lady Macs won the women’s Tier III title. Two metro-area squads placed high in the Co-Rec division. T.C. Turmoil placed first and Tool Academy was second. In Thursday’s all-star games, the Bloomington Police blanked Bloomington Firefighters 5-0. In the second game, the Under-30 all-stars defeated the Over-30 team. Firemen’s tourney participants and 350 volunteers battled the elements for four days. “Our crowds were down because of the heat and humidity,” said

Firemen’s tourney director Jeff Barnes. “But we made sure players and volunteers had plenty of water available. We had one player sent to the hospital with heat exhaustion, but he returned to play for his team later that day. “We had many compliments from the players regarding how good the fields were considering the heavy rain we had Thursday and Friday. Hats off to the Bloomington Park and Rec Department for its field maintenance efforts.” Thursday’s scheduled home-run derby was cancelled because of wet fields. But the Park and Rec Department got Valley View’s main field ready for the two all-star games.

SHORTS Richfield golf tourney The second annual Friends of Richfield Golf Tournament is Sunday, Aug. 14, at Crystal Lake Golf Club in Lakeville. Soccer FROM PAGE 22 “Mike never left the field during our games,” said Luttenegger. “He has great defending skills and was an outstanding team leader.” Both Richfield players proudly wore their gold medals after the team was presented its championship trophy following Saturday’s win over the Canadian squad. “We were really motivated for that championship game,” said Luttenegger. “The Canadian team wanted to play Rio Select in the finals because they didn’t think our team would give them much of a challenge in the finals. “That made us determined to prove them wrong and we did.” Westside United played six games in the USA Cup and won five of them during its path to the championship. “This tournament experience has got both Mike and I excited about the upcoming high school season,” said Luttenegger. “That experience should give us a boost heading into fall practices.” There were 917 teams competing in the USA Cup’s weeklong and weekend tournaments.

Former home health nurse enjoys creating healthier homes New Windows for America expanding its products, efficiency and facility Rhonda and Jim Steffes have owned and operated New Windows for America in New Brighton since 2000. Their business has grown to 30 employees and moved in March 2011 to a bigger location in New Brighton off of 35W. The company sells and installs residential windows, doors, siding, attic insulation, metal and solar roofing. “We started as a windows only company, but over the years have expanded to include more energy efficient products,” said Rhonda, who started the company after working for 10 years as a home health care RN. “I went from taking care of people to taking care of homes. We want to be your Energy Savings Solution Company.” Jim was a CPA working as the chief financial officer for a manufacturing plant before he joined Rhonda in the company. “We were founded after all the hassles and high prices we obtained while searching for windows in our home,” says Rhonda. “We felt we could do it better, cheaper and with less hassles for the homeowner. We become your ‘window guy’ for any problems, questions or

concerns. One call to us will take care of it.” With the federal government pushing homeowners to be more energy efficient, New Windows for America has joined forces with Xcel Energy and is now a trade partner. “Our relationship with Xcel Energy helps us help our customers save money by making their homes more energy efficient with attic insulation,” adds Rhonda. “We also made homes energy efficient with Energy Star certified windows, which can slash up to 40% off your home’s heating and air conditioning loss.” Solar roofing is another new product the company is installing so homeowners can eliminate a large portion of their home electrical costs, which in turn helps decrease our dependency on foreign oil. For the last nine years the company has received the Super Service Award from Angies List and has an A-plus rating from the Better Business Bureau. They also have a 12 month Same-as-Cash financing program. Rhonda claims that a major key to their success is having the highest quality installa-

tion, adding how “most of our customer feedback is reporting how conscientious and meticulous our installers are.” New Windows for America offers a double lifetime warranty including glass breakage and lifetime labor. All vinyl replacement windows are guaranteed for as long as you own the home. The warranty in non-prorated and there will be no charge for glass seal failure or glass breakage to the present property owner or the subsequent homeowner. “If you provide lifetime labor warranty, it needs to be right the first time,” adds Rhonda. In addition to the lifetime warranty the company offers an energy guarantee. Their standard window is a triple pane which is 30% more energy efficient than double pane windows most other companies install. Besides being more energy efficient, Rhonda says other benefits of having new windows and siding include increased property value and security, noise reduction, enhanced appearance of your home and they are maintenance free and easy to clean.

Want To Lower Your Energy Bills? Slash up to 40% off the heat & air conditioning loss of your home.

Plus, the Remodeling Magazine's Cost Versus Value report concludes, when replacing 10+ windows with vinyl replacement windows, the home's immediate return of investment is 73.6 percent. New Windows for America offers all vinyl or a wood interior window that has the maintenance free vinyl exterior. This is a nice option for those who want to keep a real wood window in their home. The wood windows are available in both oak & poplar. “We have over 2,770 references, and have installed over 50,000 windows in the Twin Cities,” adds Rhonda. “Approximately 35-40 percent of our business is generated through referrals or repeat business.” Store hours are 7:30 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Thursday, 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Friday and 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Saturday. The store is at 2123 Old Hwy 8 NW New Brighton. Information: 651-203-0149 or www.NWFAMN.com.

On July 20, Richfield Police Department hosted a delegation from Israel and Palestine who wanted to hear about the Joint Community Police Partnership (JCPP). The JCPP is a partnership involving the Police Departments of Richfield, Hopkins, Brooklyn Center and Brooklyn Park, Hennepin County and Northwest Hennepin Human Services Council. The mission of the JCPP is to enhance communication and understanding between law enforcement officers and multicultural residents of these cities. The delegation heard a presentation about JCPP from Richfield Police Lt. Jay Henthorne and Richfield Police Community Liaison Amy Dusek. The second portion of the program consisted of an interactive panel who engaged in a question and answer session with the delegation. The panel included Henthorne, Richfield Police Cadet Orlando Zabala, Hopkins Police Multicultural Advisory Committee member Rosemaris Campos, Brooklyn Park Police Sgt. Greg Burstad, Brooklyn Center Police Community Liaison Monique Drier, and Richfield Police Crime Prevention Specialist Jill Mecklenburg. (Submitted Photo)
