BY BILLIE JO RASSAT SUN NEWSPAPERS With a four-to-one vote, the proposed waste container storage ordinance is out with the trash. At the July 26 Richfield City Council meeting, all of the council members except Councilmember Fred Wroge vote against passing the proposed storage of garbage, refuse and recyclable containers ordinance. Wroge said he was not happy that during the June 28 meeting the council approved the first reading of the ordinance with a unanimous vote, but now with

Truck stories educate Richfield children On July 20, children tour a fire truck and ask firefighters questions. Always opening the eyes of children to new educational tools, the Hennepin County Library at Augsburg Park in Richfield held a series of three Truck Storytime events over the summer. At the events, kids listened to stories and sang songs about vehicles in the library, then went outside to inspect the various vehicles they heard about, such as a backhoe, a front-end loader and a police K-9 unit. The programs were presented in collaboration with the city of Richfield. (Submitted Photo)

Mayor Goettel goes to Washington Richfield’s mayor attends White House Forum on First Suburbs BY BILLIE JO RASSAT • SUN NEWSPAPERS Small city mayor is gaining national governmental contacts to improve the city she serves. Richfield Mayor Debbie Goettel was personally invited by Myron Orfield, executive director of the Institute on Race and Poverty and professor at the University of Minnesota, to the White House Forum on First Suburbs, Inclusion, Sustainability and Economic Growth on July 18, at the White House, Washington, D.C. The event was presented by the organization Building ONE America, a group that aims to eradicate the common challenges confronting older, developed towns, including creating a national network for shared organizing, training and leadership development. Along with Goettel and Orfield, 170
elected officials, business, labor and civic leaders from 22 metropolitan regions from across the United States packed into the White House South Court Auditorium to discuss the strengths and assets as well as the fiscal, social and environmental issues facing America’s first suburbs. First suburbs, like Richfield, are facing many challenges as the cities that they surround are becoming more and more redeveloped and more developed outer suburbs are becoming more appealing to live in, causing a significant shift in the population, according to Goettel. During discussion with United States Secretary of Transportation Raymond LaHood, Goetell said, on behalf of Richfield, her concern that for receiving stimulus money, offered to cities for growth and jobs, would not be able to benefit most first and second suburbs. “The stimulus money pushed the first and second suburbs out of the ability to have projects because of their size and not being able to have shovel-ready projects,” Goettel said.
LOADS OF ENERGY-SAVING DEALS
“But, none of us would have shovelready projects because we are fully developed.” The solution to this problem, suggested by Goettel, is to write newer grants that combine U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development projects with transportation development projects. The original purpose for the Stimulus grants was to put more people back to work, and Goettel does not fault the policies for that, but she does feel that policy making needs to be evaluated more thoroughly. “I just think that every time we do [make policies], we need to think through who is left in and who is left out,” Goettel said. The real benefit Richfield will take from the one-day forum is that now, “We have a line to the president and he is listening,” Goettel said. In the future, Goettel, along with other local leaders, will gather to reflect on what she learned from the forum and take the next step in finding the right tools for redevelopment in Richfield.

This is the summer of our discontent U.S. has no trouble saying ‘compromise,’ has issues implementing the concept The summer of 1967 was known as the summer of love. Summer 2011 should be titled ‘the summer of no compromise.’ The symphony that is the United States is reaching a crescendo of disagreement. And it couldn’t come at a worst possible time as the federal government is faced with the task of solving the nation’s budgetary issues. Our elected officials have been charged with the sacred duty of making difficult decisions on behalf of their constituents. However, most politicians seem more worried about the next round of elections than getting anything constructive done. Republicans will not budge on taxes, while Democrats refuse to cut spending, all with the underhanded intentions of getting reelected. These politicians must compromise or be ready to take responsibility for the calamitous consequences of not reaching a debt ceiling solution. A message to our legislators
BOB RINGER Sun-Current Intern
needs to be sent. Sometimes taxes need to be raised to increase revenue and sometimes spending must be cut to reduce debt. It is simple, commonsense logic. The point is: Get it done. The solution may not be perfect, but in this instance doing anything may be better than doing nothing at all. This inability to compromise is a disease that is reaching epidemic status and it doesn’t discriminate. Unfortunately, the epidemic hasn’t been quarantined within the halls of the U.S. Capitol Building; it has infected state government as well. Minnesotans have seen its symptoms first hand in the form of an embarrassing, 20-day gov-
LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Better uses for city money To the editor: As Richfield residents for over 60 years, we agree with the comments written by Heidi Gaibor (“Woman takes issue with Richfield bandshell project” July 21) on the proposed Richfield bandshell project. We have seen many great changes over the years, giving many bene-
fits to all the residents of Richfield and adding to the appearance of Richfield. With all the foreclosures in Richfield now and paying for the new city hall, we need to quit unnecessary spending. If we have extra money, lets put it into our schools. These kids are our future and schools are what prospective buyers in Richfield are looking at. Carol Beck Richfield
ernment shutdown. The good news is a cure exists. There is always a way to show your dissatisfaction. Get to the polls and boot out the politicians who put their self-interest before the state’s. As if it wasn’t bad enough that the ability to compromise seems to have disappeared from our government, the epidemic is leaking into our sport institutions as well. The NFL lockout lasted nearly 5 months and now the NBA season is at risk thanks to another lockout, all because millionaire players and billionaire owners can’t compromise on who gets what slice of the financial pie. Once again, there is a way to fight back if you feel strongly enough. Don’t buy the tickets. Don’t buy the jerseys. Don’t buy the idea that bickering is acceptable in any institution. This lack of compromise is disheartening, to say the least, especially when considering that if it were not for compromise the
United States may not exist at all. Our Founding Fathers — men like Thomas Jefferson, James Madison and Alexander Hamilton — compromised on much more difficult issues, such as how our government would be structured and what would be included in our constitution. Madison and Hamilton favored a large centralized government, while Jefferson passionately argued in favor of small government (sound familiar?). Nevertheless, these men reached a middle ground, a compromise that included a combination of both ideas, leading to the creation of the U.S. as we know it. It is time for our politicians and institutional leaders to take a page out of founder’s book. Webster’s dictionary defines compromise as a settlement of differences by arbitration or by consent reached by mutual concessions. Somebody please hand out some dictionaries.

Richfield’s Neighborhood Crime Watch doing its part Block captains hold twice-yearly meeting, hear presentation on safety, crime issues BY BILLIE JO RASSAT SUN NEWSPAPERS
Richfield block captains meet to get the latest in safety concerns and city crime trends on July 27. (Photo by Billie Jo Rassat • Sun Newspapers)
On July 27, over 185 of the registered 255 Richfield block captains of the Neighborhood Watch program met at the Richfield Middle School for their annual bi-yearly meeting. Richfield block captains are liaisons between the neighborhoods they live in and the police. “A block captain is the catalyst in the neighborhood to get the Neighborhood Crime Watch program going,” Richfield Police Certified Crime Prevention Specialist Jill Mecklenburg said. A Neighborhood Crime Watch is a group of neighbors that have
made an agreement to watch each other’s property and homes to report suspicious or criminal activity to the police department. At the meeting, Crime Prevention Officer Dave Franke presented on crime trends, common safety issues and some of the more unique incidents that have happened in Richfield. Franke stressed the importance of the Neighborhood Crime Watch program and the necessity of vigilance in each neighborhood to keep crime at bay. The program has been effective in deterring crimes such as burglary, theft, vandalism and auto theft, and is ready to expand to other neighborhoods. “I am always looking to recruit blocks into the Neighborhood Crime Watch program,” Mecklenburg said. For more information about the Neighborhood Crime Watch program, visit cityofrichfield.org/ PublicSafety, or call Mecklenburg at 612-861-9845.

Combining reading science with people power Minnesota Reading Corps fights childhood illiteracy BY BILLIE JO RASSAT • SUN NEWSPAPERS AmeriCorps members have been helping nationally and internationally with local and national nonprofit groups to provide any needed service since 1993. A local initiative, ServeMinnesota, has combined with the network of
AmeriCorps members to address early literacy through the Minnesota Reading Corps. “We have combined the science of how kids learn with the people power of AmeriCorps,” Kathy Saltzman, executive director of Minnesota Reading and Math Corps said. Since 2003, the Minnesota Reading Corps has been keeping up the fight against illiteracy in the children of Minnesota by grade three. “First you learn to read, so that you read to learn,” Saltzman said.
Dancing Ohur ear t Y 49
But so many of the children are not learning to read by third grade, nearly 15,000 third graders are failing the statewide sanctioned MCA-II test, according to Saltzman. The Minnesota Reading Corps uses the comprehensive, scientifically based reading instruction model that focuses on five components of reading: phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary development and reading comprehension. According to a 2010 Minnesota state statute, reading instruction includes a program or collection of instructional practices that is based on valid, replicated evidence showing when these practices are used, students can be expected to achieve, at minimum, satisfactory reading progress. “We have shown that seven out of ten of our graduates from the program have passed the grade three MCA-II test,” Saltzman said. Each school district determines if they will choose to apply to be a Minnesota Reading Corps site by turning in an application. “Richfield is partners with us because they know how important read-
ing is needed by third grade,” Saltzman said. Working with the Early Childhood Family Center through the Community Services program of the Bloomington and Richfield public schools, participating Richfield schools are Richfield Central School and Centennial Elementary School. Bloomington offers 16 participating Minnesota Reading Corps sites. At each site, the program offers personal, one-on-one tutoring; 20 minutes a day for children ages three to grade three. “The AmeriCorps members work along side the staff at the school. They do not replace the teacher,” Saltzman said. The Minnesota Reading Corps is still looking to fill tutoring spots in Richfield, Bloomington, Minneapolis and St. Paul. Becoming an AmeriCorps member involves a yearlong commitment to the program and includes a monthly living stipend, an education award upon completion and eligibility for health benefits. Corps FROM PREVIOUS PAGE “Any one can become a tutor,” Saltzman said. Before beginning any sessions with the kids, each tutor is required to attend a three-day summer institute. “They will not be a literacy expert at the end of the institute, but they will be trained in the most effective reading
strategies,” Saltzman said. Also, a master coach and an internal coach within the school setting continually support each tutor. “Each of our members are making an impact on a child’s life. They help change the child’s life; the experience changes the members life as well,” Saltzman said. For more information about the program or to become involved, visit minnesotareadingcorps.org.

Hennepin, Dakota county mayors get behind the wheel for food shelves BY PAUL GROESSEL • SUN NEWSPAPERS New Hope Mayor Kathi Hemken gunned it around the racetrack. She did pretty well since it was her first time hopping into a door-less stockcar, a la “The Dukes of Hazard.” She and other mayors from Hennepin and Dakota county cities are going to face off at Shakopee’s Raceway Park track in September to help raise money for area food shelves. On Thursday, July 28, after laying down a little friendly smack talk to other mayors for a commercial to promote the upcoming “Race for Hunger Mayors Cup,” Hemken took a stockcar out for a spin on the track. So, how’d her test spin go? “Fabulous. You really do have to pay attention,” Hemken said. “It’s not like driving on the streets of New Hope.” Although the list of participants hasn’t been confirmed for the “Race for Hunger Mayors Cup,” event organizer Denny Barlau said around 20 mayors and city representatives could take part in the races. The event has been scheduled Sept. 9 at Raceway Park, 1 Checkered Flag Blvd., Shakopee. Gates open 5 p.m.; time

trials and photo sessions start 5:30 p.m., and opening ceremonies begin 7:30 p.m. Aside from seeing area mayors stockcar race against each other in several heats, guests can also see Minnesota Viking cheerleaders, Swarm cheerleaders, and retired North Star hockey players. To open the event, Westside 1 Skydivers will jump from 24,000 feet and land and parachute to the center of the track. Tickets are $12.50 at the gate and presale tickets are $10. Children 12 and under are admitted for free. Ticket proceeds will go to Hennepin County’s Emergency Food Shelf network and Dakota County food shelves. Raising $100,000 is the goal, Barlau said. “Because our food shelves are in such bad shape … there’s nothing worse than letting kids go hungry,” Barlau said. Hemken hopes some people show up to have a good time and support families in need. (And, maybe so they can see other racers eat her dust.) “[It] sounds like a fun event, and the money is all going to a really good cause,” she said. Info: 612-280-7418.

Right Way Painting Solutions Sliders After one of the most brutal winters we have encountered in the past 30 years, we have all found things that need repair or replacement on our homes. Many of us have needed to put off work being done to our homes do to economic hard times. Many of us also put off projects to save money in case things got worse. Our home values have gone down which makes it hard to even think about selling our homes. The reality is that we have to keep our property in good shape to maintain our values. Painting the exterior of our homes is by far the best value to preserving our wood surfaces and windows. We can also dramatically change the appearance of the inside of our homes by updating colors. Painting woodwork is a very affordable option compared to replacing old trim around our homes. In many older homes our windows are still good, but the old stain and varnish are not holding up any more. You can save thousands of dollars by painting these windows verses replacing windows. Updating your
basement family room can also be as easy as painting the paneling. I’m Paul Moore from Rightway Painting Solutions. I’ve been in the painting business for over 20 years. Being a former Shop Teacher, I have a good background in finishing and wood replacement. We do both residential and commercial painting. We do work for several Town Home Associations, Nursing Homes and Residential Properties. We give our customers great value by being able to not just paint. We replace or repair wood, repair and reglaze older windows and reside areas that need replacement. We also repair decks and re stain decks. On the inside we repair walls, remove wallpaper, enamel wood work and paint paneling. We offer a 2 year labor warrantee on our labor, provide references and we would be happy to give you a free estimate. For all of your painting needs give us a call at 612-8392239.
FROM PAGE 1 challenge, teams from all across the country entered the contest with recipes for the categories of whole grains, dark green and orange vegetables, and dry beans and peas. The journey to the finals and ultimately the win began for South Education Center Alternative when 12 organic garden beds were planted at the school after receiving a grant from Bloomington Department of Public Health. Incorporating the produce from the organic gardens, the team — led by teacher Terry Guthrie with nurse Mary Liar, school lunch supervisor Wanda Nickola and local corporate chef Todd Bolton of the Parásole Group of Restaurants and made up of students Adeilene Dominguez, Chris Dykes, Domnic Lembo and Dolores Popescu — invented the recipe: “Porcupine Sliders.” The sandwich features high protein turkey meat combined with brown rice, spinach, celery, garlic, onions and cranberries into a patty on a whole grain roll. After making the first cut, the team was given $1,000 to prepare their recipe for SLIDERS: TO PAGE 17

Sharks FROM PAGE 1 Youth Ambassador of the Planet Award through the Wyland Foundation. The Wyland Foundation, is non-profit organization dedicated to promoting, protecting and preserving the world’s ocean, waterways and marine life by encouraging environmental awareness through education programs, public arts projects and community events. At the age of four, Sophi began her love for sharks when she caught and released her first shark, while visiting her uncle, Captain Kurt Slonim, at the Florida Keys Island, Islamorada. Since then, Sophi has been doing what she can for sharks everywhere. Through her campaign, “Save Sharks with Sophi, she has raised over $3,500 for
shark research and conservation through the University of Miami’s RJ Dunlap Conservation Program. The money Sophi raises goes to purchasing shark tags, which monitor and track the tagged shark for research. Each tag cost’s $2,000, so when Sophi reached that amount, she was invited to go down to the institute in Miami and tag a shark. During the trip, Sophi caught, tagged and named a tiger shark after herself. As part of the research at RJ Dunlap Conservation, Sophi the Tiger shark is tracked on their website at rjd.miami.edu/lear ningtools. Here anyone can view the areas that Sophi the Tiger Sharks has been and her migratory patterns since she was tagged. Raising the money for her cause is hard, but the pay off is always big. Sophi’s fundraising efforts have included hold-

ing lemonade stands in the summer and hot cocoa stands in the winter. She also sells bracelets, with the logo “Save Sharks with Sophi. As an extra treat she makes and sells her very own shark cookies. Sophi lives in Richfield, has a younger sister, Signe, and is the daughter of Neil and Kori Bromenshenkel. Going into third grade, Sophi attends Sheridan Hills Elementary School. As most young girls her age, Sophi enjoys going on field trips with her friends, playing her Nintendo DS and swimming. When Sophi grows up she wants to become a marine biologist to continue the work she has been doing since she saw her first shark. To find out more information about Save Sharks with Sophi, visit rjd.miami.edu/blog, or send requests to donate to savesharkswithsophi@hotmail.co m.

FROM PAGE 10 expert judges and all the students and staff at their school. On May 9, a panel judges, consisting of USDA Nutritionist Mydina R. Thabet, Chef Shawn Hanlin and School Nutrition Professional Dr. Katie Wilson, visited the school to watch a demonstration of the recipe preparation, taste the sliders and judge the team on criteria such as student involvement, nutrition, creativity and originality, ease of use in schools and recipe presentation. After the judging, “Porcupine Sliders” made the last cut as the top recipe in the whole grains category, becoming one of only three in place for the final win. Starting as just a submission in a single category, “Porcupine Sliders” surpassed
all of the recipes with the highest honored win. “We are so proud of our South Education Center Alternative team,” District 287 Supt. Sandy Lewandowski said. The last step in their whirlwind affair, the team will be going to the White House to meet first lady Michelle Obama and show off their winning creation. The two other teams that competed for the top award were Joshua Cowell School of Manteca, Calif., for their recipe submission of “Central Valley Harvest Bake” in the dark green and orange vegetables category, and Ira B. Jones Elementary School in Asheville, N.C., for their recipe submission of “Tuscan Smoked Turkey and Bean Soup” in the dry beans and peas category. The recipes for the top five finalists in each category are available online at recipesforkidschallenge.com.

Taking awareness further with a 5K walk Eden Prairie event to commemorate those lost to distracted driving, spread awareness BY PAUL GROESSEL • SUN NEWSPAPERS It’s an excruciating situation that is easily preventable – death from distracted driving. That’s what Vijay and Rekha Dixit are hoping people walk away with after their 5K walk and awareness event Aug. 6 in Eden Prairie. In November 2007, they lost a daughter, Shreya Dixit, to a distracted-driving accident while she was on her way home from the University of WisconsinMadison. It’s a pain they still live with, but for the fourth year, they hope to turn that pain to prevention with the awareness event, hosted by the group the Dixits started, the Shreya R. Dixit Memorial Foundation. The event has been scheduled 9 a.m., Saturday, Aug. 6, at Purgatory Creek Park, 13001 Technology Drive. “I thought it’s a very appropriate site,” Vijay Dixit said. “It’s very central, and it’s very beautiful.” They have also placed there a park bench with their daughters name on it,
he said, which also makes it a fitting location. Vijay Dixit was quick to note that it is not just a walk or fundraiser. There are several activities that are meant to inform participants and persuade them to drive safely, undistracted. That includes an annual speaker. Hennepin County Sheriff Rich Stanek and Hennepin County Attorney Mike Freeman have previously spoken at the event. This year’s keynote speaker, Minnesota Secretary of State Mark Ritchie, and his family share the pain that the Dixit family experiences. In 2000, his only daughter Rachel was killed in an automobile accident. Ritchie was out of the office and unavailable before this article went to press. “He wrote a very nice note to us saying that it is only those who have lost their children like this, [who] know what it means,” Vijay said. But together they hope people don’t need to realize the full meaning of losing a loved one to prevent other loved ones from being killed. The point is to have participants walking away from the event thinking of drivers on the road as someone’s father, brother, sister or son. Everyone on the road has someone who cares about them, Vijay said, a thought that he hopes will keep people from doing seemingly innocuous but dangerous activities when behind the wheel.
Pedal your way to the market during the month of August and receive a $2 coupon towards some fresh veggies (first 25 bicyclists).

Participants also recite a pledge that emphasizes that point and then exchange a ceremonial thread as a symbol of protection, Vijay Dixit said. The exchange is based on the Indian ceremony Raksha Bandhan, where a sister ties a thread around her brother’s wrist and prays for his protection. In turn, the brother promises to be there for her when she needs help. And to help imagine how much damage distracted driving can cause, they also bring in something directly from a horrific scene. “We always bring a crashed car on a flat truck with the story of a person who was driving – who was riding and got killed in it,” Vijay Dixit said. With these awareness activities and some of the materials and small gifts participants will receive, the Dixits hope the event will make an impact on people, not just serve as a memorable walk. Since Shreya was born in Connecticut, a concurrent event will take place in Simsbury, Conn., the same morning. Registration for the walk is $11. Donations are also accepted, and proceeds will go to tThe Shreya Dixit Memorial Foundation. But, anyone who can’t afford the registration price but would like to participate, such as college students, are still welcome to join, Vijay said. Registration is available at the event or online Info: shreyadixit.org.

Trash FROM PAGE 1 the multiple complaints by the community — via emails, letters, personal testimonies at the meeting and Facebook comments — the council is backing down. Responding to Wroge’s comments, Councilmember Pat Elliot said that the public opinion was not the reason he had changed his mind. Due to the way the public opinions were being phrased, such as saying that the city has more important uses of the police department than to enforce trash can storage issues, using this tactic, Elliot said, he would turn a deaf ear. The fact Elliot did not have sufficient knowledge of the proposed ordinance and how the city of Richfield would be affected had switched his vote. All of the council members, including Mayor Debbie Goettel, said after they had taken a stroll through their neighborhoods, they knew the ordinance would a profound affect on citizens. During the meeting, the council had agreed to open this issue up to allow for public opinions. Resident John Kelly said that if all of the existing ordinances were enforced the issues the city faces would be better taken care of than just tacking on another ordinance. Ken Severson of Richfield said he agreed with the goal of the proposed ordinance, but felt it would not be
achieved. “The issue is not if we can see the [garbage or recycling] can, but how they are stored,” Severson said. During the meeting Goettel and Richfield Public Safety Director Barry Fritz showed pictures of proper garbage and recycling storage and homes that were in violation of current garbage ordinances, such as placing trash on top of the storage bin instead of inside and homes with excessive garbage problems. The council agreed that the city has issues with visual clutter. “We do need to do more education to help make our city better,” Councilmember Tom Fitzhenry said. Even though the ordinance was declined the council agreed to look into a volunteer program to help the city staff become more aware of the individual issues, such as excessive garbage, unmowed lawns and any thing that detracts from the pleasing look of Richfield. The council suggested that the community should not be afraid to let city staff know what is going on in their neighborhoods. Any calls or emails that go to city staff or through public safety staff are confidential, according to Fritz. Fitzhenry mentioned the city website is an excellent place to voice individual concerns and still maintain anonymity. For more information on how to voice concerns to the city of Richfield staff, call 612-861-9700, or visit the city website at cityofrichfield.org.

Richfield under-17 girls soccer team is state champion Roadrunners win Classic 3 title for second straight year BY GREG KLEVEN • SUN NEWSPAPERS There were expectations of a rebuilding season for the Richfield Roadrunners girls under-17 soccer team this summer season. Richfield lost half of its players to high school graduation after winning the state C3 title a year ago. In fact, 10 Richfield girls had never played Minnesota Youth Soccer Association (MYAS) competitive soccer before according to Richfield co-head coaches Al and Sue Greimel. Al Greimel commented that “let’s see how much we can improve” after the team got off to a slow 1-3-1 start this summer season. Well, Richfield players surprised their coaches and opponents by claiming eight straight wins, including six shutouts, enroute to another state championship season. Richfield’s Under-17 team won the MYAS state Classic 3 title with three hardfought victories in the tournament at Coon Rapids. The Roadrunners defeated Red Wing 3-1 July 23 before beating New Ulm 2-1 July 26 and Mahtomedi 2-0 July 27 to improve their overall record to 9-3-1. Richfield advanced to state competition by winning the South District playoff title. Members of Richfield’s state championship team were Hannah Borman, Cathy Douangchanh, Clare Hagen, Kate

state title squad were Abha Karnick, Abbey Lamfers, Sara Lind, Sarah Mayes, Suzanna Miller, Ruth Peterson, Christine

Lakeville. This is a fundraiser to support Richfield’s junior and high school golf programs. The tournament has a shotgun start at 1 p.m. followed by a dinner and silent auction at 6 and program at 6:30. Phillips, Hannah Reeth, Hannah Schmit, Sarah Schmit, Megan Schuster, Hannah Wise and Mara Woetzel. “Keys to our turnaround included poise in our offensive end, ball possession, changing the point of attack and playing the ball in the air,” said coach Sue Greimel. “Lamfers was always an offensive threat with her booming shot. “Schmit had speed and the ability to finish scoring chances. She scored several winning goals.” But it was a team effort that propelled Richfield to a state title. “Defensively, Hendrickson, Peterson and Woetzel rarely left the field and frustrated many opponents,” said Greimel. “Our midfielders were also solid defensively and that reflected in our total of 10 goals allowed and six shutouts.” Richfield Roadrunners trailed Red Wing 1-0 in the state opener before relaxing and scoring three goals. Lamfers scored twice and Schmit had the other goal. Reeth picked up an assist and Jones was in goal for the win. Richfield followed with a 2-1 triumph over New Ulm in the semifinals. Again, the Roadrunners fell behind 1-0 before Schmit scored twice. Jones tended goal in the victory. Richfield blanked Mahtomedi 2-0 in the championship game. Lamfers and Miller provided the Roadrunner goals. Richfield posted two shutouts in the district playoffs July 16-17. Richfield beat Winona 3-0 on goals from Sarah Schmit, Hannah Schmit and Borman. Richfield also defeated Albert Lea 3-0 as Lamfers scored twice and Sarah Schmit came through with the other goal.

Lynch passes on passion for basketball to youth players Former Jefferson standout directs instructional camps BY GREG KLEVEN • SUN NEWSPAPERS Basketball tradition runs deep in the Lynch family. Longtime Bloomington resident Jake Lynch was an assistant basketball coach with Jack Evens for more than two decades at Jefferson High, starting in 1976. The Jaguars won four state championships under the guidance of Evens and Lynch. Four of Jake Lynch son’s played basket-
ball at Jefferson. Mike was the oldest and graduated in 1980. After high school, Mike Lynch continued his basketball career at Normandale and the University of Great Falls in Montana. His younger brothers John (class of ’82), Tim (’83) and Kevin (’87) were also standout high school players. John and Tim were members of the Jaguars’ ’82 and ’83 state championship teams. Kevin played on two Jefferson state title squads before starring at the University of Minnesota and embarking on a pro career in the NBA and Europe. Mike Lynch, now 49, has stayed involved with basketball through the years, directing his youth camps around
the Twin Cities area. He also stays busy with his full-time job as a financial planner. “It is very gratifying to pass on some of my basketball knowledge to the kids,” said Lynch. “We teach not only basketball fundamentals but also try to provide the youngsters with life lessons. “I enjoy the enthusiasm and energy the kids bring to camp. They enjoy being competitive and want to improve.” The Lynch Basketball Camps are designed for boys and girls ages 8-14 who are interested in learning the game of basketball in a fun and challenging environment. Players are separated by age, size and skill level.
“We work on ballhandling, shooting, rebounding, defensive footwork,” said Lynch. “We also have shooting contests and 5-on-5 scrimmages in the mornings and afternoons during the all-day summer camps.” More information on the camps is available at www.lynchcamps.com or by calling 612-347-8649. There might be another Lynch competing for Jefferson in the near future. Mike’s 15-year-old son Kyle will try out for the Jaguars next season. Mike and his wife Sandy, a 1982 Jefferson graduate, also have a 9-year-old daughter named Isabelle. Sandy Lynch also is involved in youth sports as a tennis camp director. The Lynch family resides in Bloomington.

Former home health nurse enjoys creating healthier homes New Windows for America expanding its products, efficiency and facility Rhonda and Jim Steffes have owned and operated New Windows for America in New Brighton since 2000. Their business has grown to 30 employees and moved in March 2011 to a bigger location in New Brighton off of 35W. The company sells and installs residential windows, doors, siding, attic insulation, metal and solar roofing. “We started as a windows only company, but over the years have expanded to include more energy efficient products,” said Rhonda, who started the company after working for 10 years as a home health care RN. “I went from taking care of people to taking care of homes. We want to be your Energy Savings Solution Company.” Jim was a CPA working as the chief financial officer for a manufacturing plant before he joined Rhonda in the company. “We were founded after all the hassles and high prices we obtained while searching for windows in our home,” says Rhonda. “We felt we could do it better, cheaper and with less hassles for the homeowner. We become your ‘window guy’ for any problems, questions or
concerns. One call to us will take care of it.” With the federal government pushing homeowners to be more energy efficient, New Windows for America has joined forces with Xcel Energy and is now a trade partner. “Our relationship with Xcel Energy helps us help our customers save money by making their homes more energy efficient with attic insulation,” adds Rhonda. “We also made homes energy efficient with Energy Star certified windows, which can slash up to 40% off your home’s heating and air conditioning loss.” Solar roofing is another new product the company is installing so homeowners can eliminate a large portion of their home electrical costs, which in turn helps decrease our dependency on foreign oil. For the last nine years the company has received the Super Service Award from Angies List and has an A-plus rating from the Better Business Bureau. They also have a 12 month Same-as-Cash financing program. Rhonda claims that a major key to their success is having the highest quality installa-
tion, adding how “most of our customer feedback is reporting how conscientious and meticulous our installers are.” New Windows for America offers a double lifetime warranty including glass breakage and lifetime labor. All vinyl replacement windows are guaranteed for as long as you own the home. The warranty in non-prorated and there will be no charge for glass seal failure or glass breakage to the present property owner or the subsequent homeowner. “If you provide lifetime labor warranty, it needs to be right the first time,” adds Rhonda. In addition to the lifetime warranty the company offers an energy guarantee. Their standard window is a triple pane which is 30% more energy efficient than double pane windows most other companies install. Besides being more energy efficient, Rhonda says other benefits of having new windows and siding include increased property value and security, noise reduction, enhanced appearance of your home and they are maintenance free and easy to clean.
Want To Lower Your Energy Bills? Slash up to 40% off the heat & air conditioning loss of your home.
Plus, the Remodeling Magazine's Cost Versus Value report concludes, when replacing 10+ windows with vinyl replacement windows, the home's immediate return of investment is 73.6 percent. New Windows for America offers all vinyl or a wood interior window that has the maintenance free vinyl exterior. This is a nice option for those who want to keep a real wood window in their home. The wood windows are available in both oak & poplar. “We have over 2,770 references, and have installed over 50,000 windows in the Twin Cities,” adds Rhonda. “Approximately 35-40 percent of our business is generated through referrals or repeat business.” Store hours are 7:30 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Thursday, 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Friday and 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Saturday. The store is at 2123 Old Hwy 8 NW New Brighton. Information: 651-203-0149 or www.NWFAMN.com.

I think we can all agree that eating is fun. Not only is it a way for us to socialize, reward ourselves and comfort ourselves, it also is the one area of fitness where people have the most trouble. Wouldn’t it be great to know that the choices you make are actually helping your fitness program? More importantly, wouldn’t it be even better to banish the word “diet” from your vocabulary? Chances are, if you are embarking on a “diet”, it will have a beginning and an end. The end is usually followed by slowly going back to old habits and ends you right back where you started. With our clients, we really encourage them to focus on a Lifestyle Change with room for “cheat meals” and realistic goals; which inevitably lead to lifelong results and without the emotional roller coaster of a diet.
Core/Conditioning Training’s List of “Fat Burning Foods”
eggs
low-fat dairy
Eggs are high in protein and low in calories. You may have heard all the warnings about eggs and your health: opt for eggwhites for the low-cholesterol, fatburning effect. Eggs also contain the vitamin B-12, a great supplement for breaking down fat cells.
Studies show that women who eat low-fat dairy products (such as non-fat yogurt and low-fat milk) three to four times a day lost 70 percent more fat than low-dairy dieters.
beans
oatmeal
Beans are one of the best sources of protein, fiber and iron. Some of the best beans to ear are: • Navy Beans • White Beans • Kidney Beans • Lima Beans
Oatmeal is loaded with soluble fiber, which helps reduce blood cholesterol by flushing those bad digestive acids out of your system. Skip the flavored oatmeals - you lose out on all the health benefits. If you must sweeten your oatmeal, do so by adding fruit.

lean meats
Certain fats are good for you, and your body needs them. Olive oil is one of those “good fats.” It helps you burn fat and keeps your cholesterol down. One ounce of extra virgin olive oil contains about 85% of the daily value for monosaturated fat.

A rare find in White Oaks with stunning views of the meadow. Nearly 5000 square feet of elegance, shows & feels like new construction with a dynamic main floor Master BR suite w/4 BR up. Fabulous gourmet kitchen! Warm and inviting front patio, sunlight shines throughout home!
Search for lean meats - chicken (baked, broiled, grilled), fish and turkey - which are all high in protein. It is a good rule of thumb to consume at least one half-gram protein per pound of body weight each day. A chicken breast gets you well on your way, with about 22 grams of protein.
whole grains
interval training
Our body needs carbohydrates, despite what the fad diets tell you. Avoid processed carbohydrates such as white breads, bagles, pastas and white rice and look for whole grains that have not been processed and contain the fiber and minerals your body needs.
Interval training is defined as short, repeated bouts of intense exercise with minimal rest. You can burn major calories and get an all-over workout in less than 30 minutes. When you see people who are “cut,” chances ar they are partaking in interval training.
