Saturday is a day to celebrate Bloomington Heritage Days slated to run all day Sept. 17 BY MIKE HANKS • SUN NEWSPAPERS As a community festival, Heritage Days aims to provide something for everyone, and it would be hard to argue that it will fail to deliver. The second annual Bloomington festival spans the entire day Saturday, Sept. 17, along Lyndale Avenue, north of 98th Street. A few morning activities will take place, with most activities beginning 1 p.m. The festival is intended to be all-inclusive, according to organizer Gina Szafraniec. “We’re all coming together,” she said, “having a great time and celebrating.” The festival is an annual community gathering that’s not tied to a holiday. It’s Bloomington’s version of the annual small town festival that can be found across Minnesota, according to organizer Tom Kendall, who spearheaded the inaugural event last year. The 2010 festival attracted more than 6,000 people throughout the afternoon last year, Kendall estimates. It was hard to determine the attendance as there’s no admission ticket required or entrance gate to the festivities, which were spread

COMMUNITY NOTES Energy forum set for Sept. 27 in Bloomington “The Ways Minnesotans Can Benefit from our State’s Abundant Energy Resources,” will be the topic of a forum to be presented at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 27, at the Bloomington City Council Chambers, 1800 Old Shakopee Road. The forum will start at 7 p.m. with Lynn Hinkle, policy development director of the Minnesota Solar Industries Association, to discuss “The Green-Blue Alliance: Solar Energy and Labor Issues in Relation to Clean Energy Development.” John Farrell, director of the Energy Self Reliant States and Communities Program, will also present “How

Distributed Wind Development Can Grow Jobs and Contribute to Economic Development in Minnesota,” and George Crocker, executive director of the North American Water Office, will address “The Importance of Community Organizing for Developing Distributed Renewable Energy.” This is the first of two forums on Minnesota’s energy future. Habits and photographs: Before you get too far into reading this column, I should warn you it’s just another spiel about one of my favorite hobbies. OK, disclaimer out of the way, let’s get into it. I’m a nut for instant film photography. Polaroid, Impossible Project, Fuji Instax, I don’t much care as long as I can shoot with a simple plastic camera and have the photo in my hands in less than a minute. I’ve got a box of exposures I’ve taken over the years, the vast majority of which are not spectacular, and I add to it on a regular basis, taking pictures of family, friends, landscapes and, too often, my cats. I don’t think it’s about the immediacy quite so much as it is about the aesthetic and the tactile pleasure of holding a picture in your hand. And, somewhat more importantly, it’s about connecting with family. As a kid, I spent time (lots of time) in my dad’s photography studio in Minneapolis, watching photographers, assistants, stylists and art directors work. I remember particularly watching my dad — who I generally refer to by his first name, Larry, a habit some may question as

I particularly remember Larry shooting everything with Polaroid before shooting film on projects so he could get a read on what the pictures would look like later. For years, any time I saw an old camera on the cluttered shelves of a thrift store, I’d drop a few bucks and pick it up to add to a growing collection on a shelf at the studio. A few years back, Larry turned the tables on me and mailed me a brand new Fujifilm Instax 200 and a few boxes of film. Without getting too far into it, I nerded out pretty darn hard on that sucker and blew through the film in a matter of weeks. He and I had a conversation last week about the history and longevity of film photography and what was lost — both in terms of product and process — when the industry went digital. The new digital cameras try to emulate what film was and what

Is shooting film a bit of an anachronism? To some, maybe. To me? Well, I guess, but that’s just another thing I love about it. Yes, I know instant film is expensive. Frankly, since Polaroid decided to stop producing consumer grade instant film in 2008, it’s been tougher to justify the price of just 8 or 10 exposures in a pack. When it comes down to it, I guess hauling around a bulky camera that’s more expensive to use and has

limited scope when it comes to taking pictures for any purpose other than to put on my wall at home really boils down to a connection to the past and remembering where I came from. And, sometimes, you’ve just got to follow your passion.

A Bloomington man who allegedly struck his pregnant ex-girlfriend’s vehicle with his roommate’s car was arrested on suspicion of domestic assault. The 26-year-old man was arrested shortly after the reported Sept. 4 confrontation near the intersection of American Boulevard East and 34th Avenue South, according to Bloomington Police Commander Dave Olmstead. The man, who struck his ex-girlfriend’s vehicle multiple times at approximately 3:45 p.m., is reportedly the father of the 20-year-old Bloomington woman’s child. The woman’s husband was driving their vehicle when the suspect struck them, causing an estimated $2,000 damage to the vehicle, Olmstead said. Neither occupant of the vehicle was reportedly injured. The suspect was arrested at his residence a short time after the incident. His roommate’s damaged vehicle was found in the apartment complex parking lot, Olmstead noted.

A 36-year-old Minneapolis man was arrested on suspicion of fraudulently ordering merchandise for his employer and keeping it for his personal use. The man was arrested Sept. 7 after an investigation by Quality Bicycle Parts, 6400 W. 105th St., determined he had been ordering merchandise and billing it to departments that normally wouldn’t order such merchandise, Olmstead explained. After the unusual orders were discovered the company traced them to the employee’s computer. Upon being questioned by his employers, the man said he had placed the orders and taken the merchandise for his personal use, Olmstead added. The man is suspected of placing fraudulent orders totaling $2,697, he noted.

The man is accused of stealing $1,544 worth of car wash tickets, Olmstead said. An Eagan police detective saw the suspect’s online ad and was suspicious of the discounted merchandise. He determined the man was selling tickets to Paradise Car Wash, 10820 Bush Lake Road, leading to the investigation and the suspect’s arrest, Olmstead noted.

A 29-year-old Richfield man was arrested Sept. 1 after he allegedly assaulted his exgirlfriend in her Bloomington apartment. The 31-year-old woman was asleep when she awoke to find her ex-boyfriend in the bedroom of her apartment on the 8900 block of Old Cedar Avenue South, Olmstead said. The man, who did not have a key to the residence, reportedly punched and strangled her in her apartment. She was able to call 911, but the man was gone when police arrived. Following a police bulletin, the suspect was arrested by Richfield police, Olmstead explained. There was no sign of forced entry into her residence, he noted.

Winter coats a big deal for kids who don’t have them ing charities to participate, and they request the number of coats they expect to need. “Hopefully we can fill that demand,” Sprague said. This year Pilgrim aims to collect 10,000 coats. Sprague said the campaign came close to that number a few years ago, but donations have been a little lower in recent years. Demand is higher than ever. Mary Jo Copeland of Sharing and Caring Hands in Minneapolis said the poor have always been there, but she has noticed an increased need for services because of the bad economy the past few years. Copeland estimates her organization gave away approximately 1,500 coats last year. Gifford has also observed an increasing need. “With this current economy it’s just getting tougher all the time,” he said. Though some might see the need as daunting, Copeland sees it as an opportunity. “We all have a lot,” she said. “We must share what we have with others.” Those who wish to donate coats can

That’s why Pilgrim Cleaners, Sun Newspapers, KARE 11, KFAN and Subway are sponsoring the 26th annual Coats for Kids campaign in the Twin Cities. The program allows community members to donate gently used and new coats. Pilgrim cleans the used coats and gives all the coats to charities that distribute them to people in need. Paul Gifford is a spokesperson for Minnetonka-based Hope for the City, one of the organizations that receives coats for distribution. “You can’t believe the joy that these people are showing because they received a coat,” he said. “They’re just happy to have a coat … to keep warm for the winter.” Judy Sprague with Pilgrim Cleaners has been in charge of organizing the drive for 11 years. “It’s unbelievable that there are people in Minnesota who don’t have coats,” Sprague said. Each year Sprague sends letters invit-

Representatives from Minnesota Partnership for Animal Welfare and Pet Haven Inc. of Minnesota contacted Morehouse in a last ditch effort to save the dog. The facility includes an 18,000 square foot outdoors play area, the largest for dogs in the Twin Cities. Morehouse opened Lucky Dog Pet Lodge in August. Lucky Dog Pet Lodge has taken in their second foster dog, Gage, a 10month old yellow lab mix, which had surgery on a broken rear leg. New MyPlate campaign promotes health eating BY ROXI REJALI – CONTRIBUTING WRITER Icons are everywhere: recycling symbols, smiley faces, the Apple logo. Add another icon to the list: MyPlate. It’s a new symbol to remind Americans to make healthy eating choices. MyPlate shows a dinner setting of a cup and plate divided into sections representing the major food groups of fruits, vegetables, grains, protein and dairy products. The campaign was launched in June by First Lady Michelle Obama and pairs with her ongoing Let’s Move program to increase Americans’ physical activity. Both plans are designed to combat rising rates of overweight and obesity among adults and children. The U.S. Department of Agriculture

(USDA) developed MyPlate as an easy-tounderstand way to think about building a healthy plate at mealtimes. The colorful ChooseMyPlate.gov website has recipes, sample menus and inter-

active daily food plans that calculate food requirements based on age, gender, height, weight and activity levels. You’ll also find information sheets with useful tips on topics like ways to cut back on salt and sodium, reduce kids’ sugary snacks and creative ways to add fruits and vegetables to any diet. The new plate symbol replaces the familiar pyramid icon representing the food groups, introduced in 1992. USDA research says that Americans are confused by dietary guidelines that often seem to contradict each other. The new campaign is based on findings from the USDA’s 2010 Dietary Guidelines for Americans, which emphasized reducing calories and increasing physical activity to maintain a healthy weight. While the MyPlate image may be new,

the basic rules of good health don’t appear to have changed much. The following healthy-eating guidelines are borrowed from MyPlate.gov material: • Enjoy your food, but eat less. • Avoid oversized portions. • Make half your plate fruits and vegetables. • Make at least half your grains whole grains. • Switch to fat-free or low-fat (one-percent) milk. • Compare sodium in foods like soup, bread, and frozen meals and choose the foods with lower numbers. • Drink water instead of sugary drinks. Family mealtime helps children develop into productive students and adults, according to a senior clinical psychologist at American Family Children’s Hospital. “It’s well documented that children in families that eat dinner together develop social skills, strengthen family bonds, do better in school, and engage in less risky behaviors such as drug and alcohol abuse,” says Dr. Stephanie Farrell. “Scheduling regular family dinners is one tactic to assure we take the time to slow down from the hustle and bustle of our lives and be present with our children.” “Family mealtimes provide children

with stability and a safe environment in a world that is far too often fraught with confusion and pain.” But with kids trying to stay faithful to a schedule involving ballet lessons, soccer practice, and study time for tomorrow’s big test, how can regular family dinners be possible? “Start out realistically, even if it means just scheduling one shared meal,” says Farrell. “Keep it simple. The focus is on being together, not a gourmet meal.” Farrell encourages parents to have children help prepare the meal to give them a sense of responsibility, pride and accomplishment, while at the same time, enhancing their self-esteem. “Any help in the kitchen should be praised, so everyone’s efforts are

acknowledged and will likely be repeated in the future,” she says. “Additionally, when children are involved in the planning and preparation of healthy and nutritious food choices, they are more likely to eat the food, a bonus given the alarming rise in childhood obesity.” Farrell says when the meal is served, conversation among family members should be the focus and technology should be banned. “No television, no answering the phone, and no texting,” she says. “This will allow you to actively listen to your children and connect with them. Also, resist the temptation to jump up from the table when you are done eating to begin doing the dishes. No outside boundaries should serve as a distraction.”

Farrell adds that family mealtimes should be enjoyable, fun and relaxing and unpleasant topics or criticisms should be avoided. “It is imperative to take time to laugh,” she says. “Share a joke or an amusing story from the day. This might help children lower their guard that they may have had to keep up throughout the day.” Overall, Farrell says parents who plan family mealtimes are showing just how much their children mean to them. “I cannot think of a more vital message to give our children,” she says. “‘You are the most important part of my life, and I love you unconditionally. We are all busy, but I will always take time to be here for you.’”

COMMUNITY NOTES Professional wrestling coming to Bloomington Prime Time Wrestling, a locally based professional wrestling league that features top talent from the Twin Cities and beyond, launches this month with an action-packed show at 7 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 30 at the Knights of Columbus, 1114 W. Looking to match homeless youth with host families Suburban Host Home Program aims to allow homeless youth to stay in their home communities BY MARC INGBER • SUN NEWSPAPERS One myth about homeless youth is there aren’t any in the suburbs, according to Teens Alone executive director Lydia Kihm. The problem might not be as visible, she said, in that many are sleeping on their friends’ couches and aren’t necessarily on the streets. But she estimates anywhere between 65 and 150 teens in the western suburbs are currently homeless or at risk of becoming homeless. According to a 2009 Wilder Research study, there were 46 percent more homeless, unaccompanied youth ages 16-21 in Minnesota than three years previously. On any night in the state, there is an estimated 2,500 homeless youth. Research shows that staying in their home community is critical in helping these youth complete school and move

into a stable young adulthood. But Kihm said there are limited housing programs for homeless youth in suburban Hennepin County. Teens Alone, a Hopkins-based organization that provides counseling, crisis referral and homelessness prevention services, and some of its partners are hoping to change that with the Suburban Host Home Program. The objective of the program are to provide safe housing to suburban homeless youth through volunteer host families. Teens Alone is coordinating the program with organizations such as Avenues for Homeless Youth, YMCA POINT Northwest and Oasis for Youth. Avenues for Homeless Youth, a Minneapolis nonprofit, has run a successful similar program since 1998 with its GLBT Host Home Program. It provides homeless gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender youth with safe homes and support. That’s why Teens Alone wanted it to help coordinate this program. “It made sense to build this suburban host program together,” Kihm said. The Suburban Host Home Program will recruit, screen, train and support adult volunteers in the suburbs to be

host homes and then match suburban homeless youth with those volunteer homes. Kihm said she already had a list of youth ready to be matched. The idea is to enable the youth to remain in the community where they are comfortable, have friends, attend school and work. “There’s no money – you’re doing this out of hospitality and the goodness of your heart,” Kihm said. “We know it’s a huge commitment, but we’re optimistic. (The families) will have somebody to try to help them.” Youth will stay with their host families for a maximum of one-and-a-half years, though the time period will more likely be six to nine months for most, she said. If a teen is not a good match with a family, the program will match him or her with another family. Some of the teens who participated in Avenues for Homeless Youth’s GLBT program have built relationships with their families that have lasted years, Kihm said. Suburban youth become homeless for several reasons. For some, its chemical abuse or mental health issues in the family. Due to the

economy, some families have run out of room in their houses and the older children want or have to find alternative living arrangements. Kihm assumes most of the families who volunteer to host youth will be “empty nester” couples, but the program is open to whoever wants to volunteer. The Suburban Host Home Program will hold four informational meetings in the metro in September to answer families’ questions. Kihm said there were no shelter beds in the western and southern suburbs for homeless youth. Building a shelter would cost millions of dollars, so the host family program is the best option. She hopes the program is up and running by later this year before winter comes. “This is the least expensive way we can house some kids,” she said. “All of us are coming together around homeless youth. We want to find safe places for young people.”

Heritage FROM PAGE 1 cost of $5 per child, and the evening’s main stage entertainment, featuring music by Casablanca Orchestra. The festival includes a classic car display, arts and craft fair and several performances and demonstrations during the afternoon. A BMX bicycle stunt show, robotics demonstration by Bloomington high school students and historical reenactments by the Bloomington Historical Society are among the afternoon’s entertainment. Competitive eating and hip swaying are also planned during the afternoon. There will be pie-eating contests every 30 minutes, and a 5 p.m. hula hoop contest in the teen area of the festival. For children there will be a tractor pedal pull at 3 p.m. City, military and civic groups will have displays and information at the festival as well. Although most activities are scheduled for the afternoon, a three-on-three basketball tournament begins at 8 a.m., and the thinkPINKkids 5K Walk from Bloomington Kennedy High School will move outdoors this year, ending at the

Heritage Days festival grounds on Saturday morning. Main stage entertainment will last until midnight. One thing the festival won’t include is a parade. The parade was the initial idea behind Heritage Days, according to Kendall. Although the parade has yet to come together, the plan is to include it next year now that festival organizers have a volunteer to coordinate it, according to Szafraniec.

Shuttle service Parking is limited in the vicinity of the festival. There are three park-andride locations to catch a shuttle bus during the day. Kennedy High School 9701 Nicollet Ave. S., will offer shuttle service beginning 11:30 a.m. Normandale Community College 9700 France Ave. S., and Northwestern Health Sciences, 2501 W. 84th St., will offer service beginning 12:15 p.m. Bus service to all three lots will continue throughout the day, with one bus serving the three lots after 8 p.m. Info: bloomingtonheritagedays.org.

Jefferson (1-1) was defeated 43-7 by Prior Lake (1-1) Sept. 9 at Bloomington Stadium in Week 2 of the football season. The Jaguars edged Burnsville 20-18 in their season opener Sept. 1. Kennedy (0-2) encountered the state’s No. 1-ranked team, Eden Prairie, last Friday on the road and came away with a 35-0 loss. Kennedy was beaten 28-6 by Rosemount in its season opener. Kennedy hopes to break into the win column against Burnsville (0-2) at 7 p.m. Friday, Sept. 16, at Bloomington Stadium. The Blaze lost 38-7 to Rosemount last week. Kennedy wasn’t able to generate much offense against Eden Prairie’s stingy defense. EP has given up only seven points in two games. Senior running back Lexis Jones led Kennedy rushers with 69 yards on 20 carries. Sophomore quarterback Travon Hearns completed six of 11 passes for 56 yards. Junior running back Arich Juberian finished with four catches for 33 yards. Eden Prairie built a 28-0 halftime lead and added one touchdown in the third quarter. Jefferson battled Prior Lake on even terms for most of the first half last week and trailed 22-7 heading into the third quarter. However, the Lakers broke the game open with one score in the third quarter and two touchdown runs of 26 and 31 yards in the final quarter. “Prior Lake outplayed us physically and had a good nose guard in Karmichael Dunbar,” said Jefferson head coach Jon Leverenz. “And we had too many mental errors.” Jefferson senior running back Andre Rowell came through with the Jaguars’ lone touchdown on a 5-yard run in the first quarter. BY GREG KLEVEN • SUN NEWSPAPERS Bloomington Kennedy High School Athletic Hall of Fame will honor five new inductees during halftime ceremonies of the Eagles’ football game against Burnsville at 7 p.m. Friday, Sept. 16, at Bloomington Stadium. Those 2011 inductees are Mike McKay, Jeanne Arth, Valdy Hrypa, Tom Dalheim and Kent Landreth. McKay was a science teacher and coach at Kennedy from 1968 to 1998. He coached track for 30 years (28 as head coach) and served as football coach for 25 years (15 as head coach). Kennedy’s track team produced eight state champions with McKay as a coach. Ten of his football players received allstate honors. Arth was a teacher, coach and guidance counselor at Kennedy from 1963 to 1993. She taught physical education for 20 years and served as guidance coun-

selor for 17 years. Arth coached the Kennedy boys tennis team from 1965 to 1969. She has been inducted into numerous state and national hall of fames. She was a former U.S. Open women’s double champion in 1958 and 1959. Arth was Wimbledon Ladies doubles champion in 1959. Hrypa is a 1971 Kennedy High graduate and participated in soccer and basketball. He was an all-conference, allstate and all-American player in soccer. Hrypa holds every soccer scoring record in Kennedy history. Dahlheim, a 1971 grad, attained allconference and all-metro hockey honors before going on to play at the University of Minnesota. He was a member of the Gophers NCAA championship tem in 1973-74. Landreth, a 1987 graduate, earned nine varsity letters in soccer, hockey and track at Kennedy. He helped the Eagles win the 1987 state boys hockey title and went on to play for Air Force

Volleyball highlights Kennedy placed fifth in the Apple Valley Aerie Challenge volleyball tournament last weekend posting a 3-1 record. Kennedy defeated St. Francis 25-16, 25-19 in first-round action. Eagle junior setter Justine Legut had 19 assists. Senior outside hitter Alaina Brown came through with six kills, three aces and seven digs. Stewartville defeated Kennedy 26-24, 26-24 in the second round. Brown and senior Karin Bull had eight digs each. Legut supplied 20 assists. Kennedy regrouped from that loss to beat Cretin-Derham Hall 25-21, 25-14. Sophomores Beth Goodman and Taylor Kochie made their first varsity starts in the triumph. Brown led the team with nine kills, eight digs and three service aces. Bull provided seven kills, seven digs and two aces. Senior Heather Bachman had four kills and four digs.

Kennedy earned fifth-place honors with a 25-18, 25-18 win over Minneapolis Southwest. Brown contributed three aces and five digs. Senior Jenn Showers had two aces. Legut chipped in with 20 assists. Bull added nine kills and five digs.

Swimming standouts Kennedy’s girls swimming team lost 88-31 to Eagan Sept. 1 in its opening meet but had several impressive individual performances. Eagle diver Kelly Jeans placed first with 215.20 points. She was a state qualifier last season. Missy Gardner was second in the 500 freestyle with a time of 5 minutes, 52.14 seconds. Naomi Wellumson was second in the 50 freestyle (27.19). Kennedy captains are seniors Katja Becker and Kassie Foss. Gardner will aid the Eagles in the distance freestyle events. Wellumson will be a top sprinter for the Eagles according to head coach Todd Walsh. Hannah Jensen is expected to help in the backstroke and freestyle events. Emily Fischer will specialize in the breaststroke event. Carrie Anderson will also lend varsity help.

State returnee Ketterson anchors Jefferson boys CC squad Jaguar girls team is led by co-captains Weatherhead, Martens BY GREG KLEVEN • SUN NEWSPAPERS Jefferson’s boys and girls cross country programs are making progress, according to head coach Jeremy Kersten. “Our boys varsity team has about seven or nine runners who should help out,” said Kersten. “And we have excellent leadership.” Jefferson’s tri-captains are seniors Jan Ketterson and Ted McGee along with junior Jacob Weber. Ketterson earned all-conference honors and qualified for state as a junior last season. One valuable addition to Jefferson’s boys team is sophomore Matt Rosen. “This is Matt’s first year out for cross country after playing football

last year,” said Kersten. “But he also competed in track and qualified for state in the 800-meter run last spring. “He shows a lot of potential as a distance runner in cross country.” Jefferson’s other leading varsity candidates are senior Justin Hendricks, eighth-grader Zak Ketterson and junior Jack Kokkinen. Jefferson’s girls country team also shows promise. “The team is growing,” said Kersten. “We have five more girls out for this year’s team than last year. We might not have that one individual standout but are trying to build depth.” Jefferson’s girls cross country senior co-captains are Joni Weatherhead and Dancia Martens. Other varsity runners are senior Anne Gathje, sophomore Alexa Groenke, sophomore Bailey Plamen, junior Maria Molina Espinosa and ninth-grader Kelly Mitzel.

Jefferson placed 11th of 26 teams in the meet. Eastview won the boys team title with 104 points. Owatonna placed second (132) and Centennial finished third (158). Jefferson totaled 325 points. The Jaguars’ Rosen finished 50th overall (18:09). Weber was 70th (18:09) and McGee placed 70th (18:28). Jefferson’s girls cross country squad placed 19th of 25 teams in the Rolf Melby Invite. Bodway collected 26 digs and 28 kills in those two matches. Scherber was perfect in 30 serving attempts. Wollak had 27 kills. Jefferson will host Rosemount at 7 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 15.

Jefferson’s girls soccer squad has compiled a 3-3 overall record and 1-1 mark in the South Suburban Conference. Jefferson beat Kennedy 3-2 Sept. 6 before losing 1-0 to Apple Valley Sept. 8. Jefferson had a 30 to 3 advantage in shots against Kennedy but had trouble converting those scoring chances. Sophomore Megan Somers scored twice for the Jaguars. Nicole Tobon scored the other Jefferson goal. Assists went to Karma Knutson, Isabel Nutting and Madi Yueill. Kari Dahlen was in goal for the Jaguars and finished with one save. And the Jaguars achieved that feat without all-state player Haley Bodway, who has been sidelined with an ankle injury. The Jaguars are 8-1 overall after their second-place finish. Lakeville North defeated Jefferson 25-16, 25-23 in the championship match. Jefferson recorded 2-0 victories over Lincoln, Totino-Grace and Belle Plaine in

Jaguar allstate player Haley Bodway injured her ankle and will be out of the lineup for a couple of weeks. “Losing Haley for several weeks has a significant impact on our team both defensively and offensively,” said Jefferson head coach Michelle Grice. “We have to make up for kills, digs and blocks that she brought to our team. “I am proud of the way our team is playing with Haley out.
