Angel’s Attic Sale begins Saturday in Bloomington Fundraising event benefits families affected by cancer BY MIKE HANKS – SUN NEWSPAPERS On the outside it’s a nondescript warehouse that thousands of people drive by every day. On the inside it’s a treasure hunter’s dream. Bargain hunters are likely to find something they like, too. Part rummage sale, part estate sale, the second annual Angel’s Attic Sale begins Saturday in Bloomington. The name may not ring a bell, but bargain hunters have seen it many times before. A team of about 100 volunteers is organizing the sale, many of whom have a lot of experience in bringing secondhand merchandise to the masses, according to event organizer Kay Melemed of Minnetonka. “It’s the same volunteers that put on the American Cancer Society garage sale,” she said. The garage sale was an enormous annual fundraising event that was retired two years ago. Many of the same volunteers organized the annual sale for decades, including Melemed, who has volunteered for 35 years. Each year volunteers gathered donations and sorted them in a large, empty retail space ATTIC: TO PAGE 26

With the new academic year underway, Normandale Community College of Bloomington paused to commemorate the completion of its student center expansion and denote the construction of its Academic Partnership Center and parking ramp projects. The Sept. 29 ceremony provided a showcase of its $14.5 million dollar Kopp Student Center expansion. The project, funded wholly through student fees, expands the food service options at the student center, provides additional meeting space for student organizations and offers on-campus banking for students, faculty and staff, according to Ed Wines, the vice president of finance and operations at Normandale. Firefighter Foundation seeks donations for memorial at state Capitol BY PAUL GROESSEL • SUN NEWSPAPERS An airport baggage claim may not be the best location for a firefighter memorial. The Minnesota Fire Service Foundation doesn’t think so, anyway. The group is working to collect $600,000 in donations by Dec. 31 to construct a new memorial on State Capitol grounds that is larger and more accessible than the statue that currently sits near the baggage claim area at the Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport. By meeting the Dec. 31 deadline to raise the $600,000, the foundation hopes it can have the memorial up by National Fallen Firefighters Memorial Weekend in October 2012. The statue honors the 193 Minnesota firefighters who have given their lives since 1881. It was moved to the baggage claim area about 20 years ago, from a more public and accessible portion of the airport, said foundation president and Eden Prairie Fire Chief George Esbensen. “It was a good sort of large space, and

the columns. It will be a living memorial. If a name unfortunately needs to be added to the memorial, it could be. Last spring, Esbensen asked Leo A. Daly to help the Foundation with a design, and the firm agreed to do the work for free. Leo A. Daly is a national architectural firm that has done much public and private sector work. It also designed the World War II memorial in Washington, D.C. “Most of these [firefighters] are doing it volunteer or technically paid, [on a] small dollar value. … What better group could we do some volunteer work for, as architects that live and work the public sector?” said Ted Redmond, vice president and managing principal at Leo A. Daly. The design may be planned; now the money needs to be collected. Since July, the foundation has collected $170,000, mostly from statewide firefighters, Esbensen said. Now, he’s hoping other Minnesotans will help chip in and recognize the nearly 193 firefighters who have died and the

very public place to have this sculpture,” Esbensen said. After the airport got pressed to have more revenue-generating space and security measures tightened, the sculpture was moved, he said. Now, the foundation would like to “claim a more sacred ground” for a memorial, Esbensen said, which would be more accessible to the public, on a southern portion of the State Capitol property in St. Paul. The memorial would provide enough space for large gatherings and up-close viewings of the statue. A new architectural enclosure would house the statue, in the middle of a walking area. That area would be adjacent to a wall listing all the fire departments in Minnesota. The enclosure will be made of weathering steel columns that rust to a certain point, and then the rust will protect the metal, said Glenn Waguespack, the senior architect who led the memorial’s design for architectural firm Leo A. Daly. Each column represents a year when a firefighter died while on duty, Waguespack said, and the names of those who have died will be engraved on

20,000 firefighters who serve in Minnesota now. “I think we honor all of those people that fight for us and protect for us,” Esbensen said, whether it’s military, police officers, firefighters or other service providers. When it comes to firefighters, they run toward a situation everyone else is supposed to run away from, “and stop that chaos from further destruction, and I think we need to commemorate those people” for giving their lives, Esbensen said. Redmond said the foundation is a group that doesn’t draw much attention to itself, so donating a few dollars to help its cause would say a lot. “There isn’t an awful lot of official recognition that happens. … It’s a good cause, a fantastic group,” Redmond said. A 21-year-old Golden Valley woman thought she could outrun and out swim Bloomington police prior to being arrested after a short chase. The woman, arrested Oct. 2, fled her vehicle when she crashed it into the bicycle rack outside Bloomington Civic Plaza, according to Bloomington Police Commander Mark Stehlik. The short pursuit began when an officer parked near the exit of Interstate 35W and 94th Street watched the woman roll through the intersection at the top of the southbound 35W exit ramp shortly before 1 a.m., Stehlik explained. The woman slammed on her brakes but could not avoid jumping the curb on the south side of 94th Street, he noted. The woman pulled onto westbound 94th Street and was pursued by the officer. As he attempted to conduct a traffic stop the woman kept driving, rolling through a stop sign as she turned south onto James Avenue. She continued southbound until

she reached 98th Street. The woman drove through the stoplight at 98th Street and into the parking area on the east side of Civic Plaza, where her car jumped the curb, knocking down a tree and coming to a rest against the bicycle rack, according to Stehlik. The woman fled out the passenger’s side of her car, swam across the storm water retention pond nearby and continued across Old Shakopee Road. Additional officers responding to the scene arrested the woman without incident outside of St. Luke’s Lutheran Church, Stehlik noted. The woman faces possible charges of second-degree driving while impaired, driving after revocation, refusal to test to chemical testing, and fleeing a police officer, he said.

Police FROM PREVIOUS PAGE Bloomington robbery attempt. The suspect is accused of walking into the Papa Murphy’s pizzeria at 8507 Lyndale Ave. S. and demanding cash from the employee on duty shortly after noon Oct. 3. The man told the employee, “I’ll take one of everything. The employee replied, “On a pizza, I don’t think you’ll like that. The man clarified he wanted cash and began hitting the pizzeria counter with a tire iron, Stehlik explained. The employee fled the pizzeria through its rear entrance and ran to a neighboring nail salon, telling employees of the salon to lock their doors and call the police. The suspect, who chased after the Papa Murphy’s employee, attempted to gain access to the nail salon. When told police were called, the man was seen getting into a blue Dodge Caravan in the parking lot of the strip mall. Police were given a license plate number of the vehicle and the man was arrested blocks away from the strip mall without incident following a traffic stop, according to Stehlik. The man had been released from prison in South Dakota three months prior to the incident and told police he had been drinking in Minneapolis prior to driving to

Bloomington. The man was charged in Hennepin County District Court with one count of first-degree attempted robbery and faces up to one year and one day to 20 years in prison and a fine of up to $35,000 if convicted.

Attempted burglary A 21-year-old Bloomington man accused of first-degree burglary faces up to 20 years in prison after attempting to remove beer from a refrigerator in a Bloomington garage. The suspect was charged in connection with a Sept. 30 incident on the 3900 block of Poplar Bridge Road, according to Stehlik. While one of the homeowners was asleep inside the house, several friends and the homeowner’s spouse were in the backyard of the house, gathered around a bonfire. One of the friends observed the suspect in the driveway of the house. The homeowner went to see who was in the driveway and found the suspect attempting to remove two cases of beer from the garage, Stehlik explained. Police responded to the residence and arrested the man. Because the garage was attached to the house and occupied at the time of the incident the suspect faces a felony charge, Stehlik explained. If convicted he faces between six months and 20 years in prison and a fine of up to $35,000.

We’re not as socialist as some may think We’ve been following the process of setting budgets and determining preliminary proper tax levies for cities, the county and schools for the past few weeks. A few things are clear in this year’s deliberations. The changes the state made to the Homestead Credit in the waning moments of its special session earlier this year has caused a lot of gray hair. Honestly, the upshot of that change is too complicated to explain to you in the space allocated for this column. What’s worse is that every municipality and school district seems to have a slightly different take on what the impact will be. Here’s my take: Your property taxes may or may not go up, but if they do, your city, school district and county will have had very little to do with it. Polite society doesn’t use tar

and feathers any longer, but were we still in those halcyon days, I would recommend that each of our legislators and governor be staked to an anthill and covered in honey. Sad fact is, I’m not sure how many of our legislators actually knew the tax credit was being messed with in the first place since it all came up and was approved before you could blink an eye. Now that’s really an effective way of making legislation, isn’t it? Truthfully there isn’t a legislative incumbent planning to run next year who deserves your vote.

Here’s the other thing that struck me in reviewing dozens of reports on preliminary levy hearings. Minnesota for all of its socialist efforts to share the wealth still manages to have a rather nasty system of “haves” and “have-nots” when it comes to public funding. Maybe that’s the way it’s supposed to be. If a community wants better schools, it certainly can vote to pony up dollars to make that happen. Right? But then let’s stop the charade that every child is getting the same education if we compare the impact of finances, for instance, in Wayzata School District and Brooklyn Center School District. I don’t believe finances determine outcomes in education 100 percent, but they sure make a big contribution. Knowing what to do with your money also helps.

The funding formula for public K-12 schools in Minnesota is tremendously intricate and designed to deal with every known inequity. Yet it doesn’t take much observation to see that it isn’t working. If you’ve been following national politics, you might see a parallel here between the argument over class warfare in taxing the rich and providing a world-class education for every student in Minnesota. The system seems to be slightly more fair for municipalities, but if you dig deep enough, you can find inequities there, as well. But in that case it only means you drive on roads with more potholes. You aren’t jeopardizing the future of our state’s ability to provide a highquality workforce. Final budgets and tax levies must be approved in December. Stay tuned.

our country’s innovation deficit by encouraging exploration and curiosity in our youth and developing such 21st century learning skills as creativity, teamwork and critical thinking. The 108 elementary students at Oak Grove Middle School joined more than 76,000 students nationwide in exciting hands-on STEM activities. They were challenged to solve a variety of problems using science, technology, engineering and math concepts that they learned throughout the week. I especially want to thank camp director Talina Rauch, her talented local teaching staff and counselors and the creative students in Bloomington for their exceptional work.

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Proven leadership from Winsted has served city well To the editor: At the Sept. 26 Bloomington City Council meeting some mundane business regarding refinancing of bonds was presented by the city’s finance staff. In short, they presented to the council and public their plans to save the city tens of thousands of dollars by refinancing bonds that had previously been issued (in a much healthier economy) for city improvements. Just as anyone who carries a high interest rate on their home mortgage watches for the opportunity to refinance, so

does the Bloomington staff. And we can do this because the city’s credit ratings, (unlike our current federal or state government ratings,) are the very best that can be earned through all three of the major credit rating agencies. In the eyes of those who assess our management, reliability and stability, Bloomington and its leadership are among the very best in the country. When candidates seeking office claim that the city can and must manage better, yet offer no substantial recommendations, voters should be skeptical. It wasn’t that long ago that our federal and state governments were deemed well managed, too, but things can change. The current elected and staff leaders in our city are

Baloga’s experience valuable to District 3 To the editor: Bloomington, like many municipalities, will be holding elections Nov. 8 and unfortunately the typical turn out for these off year elections is less that 20 percent of the electorate. Nevertheless, elections do matter as do the people who represent us on the Bloomington City Council. We in District 3 are truly fortunate in having a highly qualified candidate in Jack Baloga running for office. Over the years Jack has served the city of Bloomington in numerous ways, including on the Planning Commission, Local Board of Appeal and Equalization, Charter Commission and Citizens Parks Master Plan Task Force, and as an election judge. Jack is a University of Minnesota

business graduate, 30-year business executive and a 25-year resident of Bloomington. Bloomington would be fortunate to have someone of Jack’s caliber serving as District 3’s council member, he is a true public servant. Jon Wallace Bloomington

Gruggen withdraws school board candidacy To the editor: Last week, I was diagnosed with thyroid cancer. Luckily it’s one of the best cancers to get if you have to get cancer … tends to be non-aggressive and curable. Surgery should be sooner rather than later, which gives me one too many balls too juggle. I decided to set one ball down gently, rather than allow them all to come crashing down over the next few weeks. While I wanted to give back to our community as a school board member, my trusted inner voice says, “Now is the time to focus on your health and leave school board to others.” Thank you to everyone with a “Vote Gruggen” sign in your yard … my son will be by soon to pick it up. I appreciate all the support I’ve received since

deciding to run last spring. Please vote Nov. 8. Who is on our school board truly impacts the future of Bloomington Public Schools. Judy Gruggen Bloomington

Former student appreciates Bartolotta To the editor: I endorse Maureen Bartolotta for school board because of her commitment to enhancing the city of Bloomington and its residents. Maureen has served as an incredible mentor and guide to me and all youth in the community. In addition, Maureen was a key leader in bringing the new Bloomington teen coffeehouse, Central Grounds, into existence. The nonprofit project now provides a safe, fun place for all Bloomington high school students to go after school. Central Grounds would not have been completed without Maureen’s service, input and tireless effort. Our community would not be the strong, dynamic urban center it is today without the leadership of people like Maureen Bartolotta. Rachel Berkowitz Bloomington

The student center renovation provided an update to a portion of the campus that was developed more than 30 years ago, Wines said. “We had simply outgrown that space.” The 98th Street Eatery provides a wider variety of meal options daily, including a wood-fire grill for pizza and sandwiches, a taco bar, a specialty bar that features varying entrees and a salad bar. Many items are made fresh at each station, according to Wines. The expansion also includes The Overlook, a new coffee and snack bar that overlooks the school’s Japanese garden, he noted. There are now nine areas for academic and club meetings in the expanded student center, triple the meeting space that was available at the student center, Wines said. And U.S. Bank now operates a branch on campus, an amenity found on many large college campuses. At approximately 15,000 students, Normandale is larger than all but three state universities, which typically offer on-campus banking service, he explained.

The college solicited proposals for its on-campus bank in choosing U.S. Bank, Wines said. In addition to offering banking services to students and staff, the bank will also provide educational programs, Wines noted. An expanded college store and space for a textbook center are part of the student center expansion, he added. In addition to approval and funding for the project, students participated in the design process for the expanded student center as well, Wines said. The Kopp Student Center is named after Lee Kopp, who attended the ceremony. Kopp’s foundation has donated to many Minnesota State Colleges and Universities institutions, including $500,000 to Normandale in 2005, according to Wines. The ceremony included a groundbreaking for the Academic Partnership Building, a $23 million project that will add 25 classrooms, engineering labs, faculty office space and student gathering space to the campus. It is scheduled for completion in January 2013. Normandale is also adding a 725stall parking ramp, at a cost of $12 million, funded primarily through student fees, Wines said. The ramp is scheduled for completion next summer.

The Regional Leader in Vein Care

Each Monday night during the summer 10-year-old Hayden Audette of Brooklyn Park picks up a softball glove and rolls his wheelchair onto a parking lot near the Brooklyn Park Community Activity Center. When he gets out there, he means business. Audette is a member of the Junior Rolling Twins, a competitive youth wheelchair softball team run by the Golden Valley-based Courage Center. Hayden has played on the team three years. For the nine years since the team was organized, it has been practicing in parking lots and has called the Brooklyn Park lot its “home field” since 2003. Players come from across the metro and beyond. Some drive from as far away as Faribault to participate. Next year, Hayden and his teammates plan to bid the parking lot farewell in exchange for a competitive wheelchair softball field planned for Northwoods Park in Brooklyn Park. The Courage Center — a nonprofit rehabilitation and resource center for people with disabilities — broke ground on the field Sept. 24. Last year the center won a $200,000 grant for the field through the Pepsi Refresh project. Pepsi accepted project proposals from 15 Major League Baseball Teams. The

Minnesota Twins picked a wheelchair softball field for the Courage Center’s Rolling Twins and Junior Rolling Twins as the project the team would sponsor. People across the country cast more than two million votes for which project should win the money, and the Twins and Courage Center won the competition with about 60,000 more votes than the secondplace Milwaukee Brewers. Hayden helped encourage people to vote for the project by participating in a wiffle ball game in Target Plaza, being in newspaper articles and more. “I’m really excited for this new field, and I’m glad we got the grant for it,” Hayden said. “We started this quest about 10 years ago to really find a permanent home and to raise the money to make it happen,” Sharon Van Winkle of the Courage Center said. Van Winkle said playing wheelchair softball requires a “very very level” surface without cracks or obstacles. Not many parking lots fit the bill. The ones that do often belong to companies that see allowing the game as a potential insurance liability. Tony Marquette of Hannover has coached the Junior Rolling Twins since the team started. He said the team has appreciated the city of Brooklyn Park allowing the

Wheelchair FROM PREVIOUS PAGE team to play on the parking lot. “They stepped up when nobody else did,” he said. Nevertheless, he said playing in a parking lot presents challenges because of unevenness, cracks, puddles after rain, lack of protection for players on the sidelines and the absence of a fence to contain rolling balls. Tracy Audette, Hayden’s mother, said she has been concerned sometimes for the safety of children playing. She said some of them get going fast and can tip over if they hit a crack. “We’ve had a lot of spills,” she said. “One time I was going for a ball, and I almost flipped,” Hayden said. That’s a problem for the adult team as well, which is very competitive and recently won the title of 2011 national champions. “We’re talking about high-end, elite athletes who have specialized chairs,” Van Winkle said. Van Winkle said even though wheelchair softball started in Minnesota in the early 80s, the field will be the first competitive wheelchair field in the state. There are only a handful in the Midwest. According to Jon Oyanagi with Brooklyn Park’s recreation and parks department, the field will take the place of the ice rinks in Northwoods Park. The field’s surface will be asphault with a green coating like a tennis court. It will have lines painted like a softball diamond. The field will slope gradually down from the center to the edges to prevent puddles. There will be a fence around the field and a “dugout” area protected from stray balls.

The area will also have wheelchair-accessible restrooms, as well as storage space so the teams don’t have to lug all their equipment to and from the field. In addition to the softball field, the city plans to replace the current playground with a handicap-accessible playground. According to Oyanagi, the budget for the entire project is $625,000. He said the city had already set aside $100,000 to replace the playground. It’s also applying for $325,000 it hopes to get through Hennepin County’s youth sports grant program. Along with the $200,000 Pepsi grant, that would cover the cost of the project. Oyanagi said the city was eager to keep the Rolling Twins and Junior Rolling Twins in the city. “It will really fit into our mission statement of providing opportunities for all,” he said. “We were thrilled to get them.” Van Winkle said it’s appropriate for the field to be in Brooklyn Park because the city has been supportive of the program. Marquette also emphasized his appreciation for the city’s support. “They really went above and beyond,” Marquette said. The softball field will allow the teams to host national championships. Marquette said it will also give the teams credibility. He said sometimes wheelchair sports have difficulty earning respect from the community. Playing in a parking doesn’t help. “When you play in a parking lot, it’s a little bit like it’s not a real game,” he said. Marquette said he’s grateful “the community respects our game enough that we could build something like this.” The city plans to complete the softball field next summer, just in time for the Junior Rolling Twins to host the junior national championships in August.

COMMUNITY NOTES Coats for Kids drive falls short, deadline moved

KFAN and Subway. The program accepts new and gently used winter coats for all ages to be giving to families in need. Pilgrim Cleaners owner Bonnie Engler said the recent streak of warm weather probably meant people weren’t thinking about winter coats, but she hopes the deadline extension will help the campaign come closer to its goal. Those who wish to donate can drop off coats at any of the 25 Pilgrim Cleaners

As of Oct. 7 the Coats for Kids drive had only collected about 4,000 coats toward its goal of 10,000. Originally scheduled to end Oct. 8, the deadline for donations has been extended to Saturday, Oct. 15. The drive is sponsored by Pilgrim Cleaners, Sun Newspapers, KARE 11,

locations. Pilgrim will clean the coats and donate them to local charities. The charities receiving coats this year are Sabathani Community Center, Sharing and Caring Hands, Ronald McDonald House of the Twin Cities, Catholic Charities of St. Paul and Minneapolis, STEP, CEAP, Lutheran Social Services and Hope for the City. Right Way Painting Solutions After one of the most brutal winters we have encountered in the past 30 years, we have all found things that need repair or replacement on our homes. Many of us have needed to put off work being done to our homes do to economic hard times. Many of us also put off projects to save money in case things got worse. Our home values have gone down which makes it hard to even think about selling our homes. The reality is that we have to keep our property in good shape to maintain our values. Painting the exterior of our homes is by far the best value to preserving our wood surfaces and windows. We can also dramatically change the appearance of the inside of our homes by updating colors. Painting woodwork is a very affordable option compared to replacing old trim around our homes. In many older homes our windows are still good, but the old stain and varnish are not holding up any more. You can save thousands of dollars by painting these windows verses replacing windows. Updating your

basement family room can also be as easy as painting the paneling. I’m Paul Moore from Rightway Painting Solutions. I’ve been in the painting business for over 20 years. Being a former Shop Teacher, I have a good background in finishing and wood replacement. We do both residential and commercial painting. We do work for several Town Home Associations, Nursing Homes and Residential Properties. We give our customers great value by being able to not just paint. We replace or repair wood, repair and reglaze older windows and reside areas that need replacement. We also repair decks and re stain decks. On the inside we repair walls, remove wallpaper, enamel wood work and paint paneling. We offer a 2 year labor warrantee on our labor, provide references and we would be happy to give you a free estimate. For all of your painting needs give us a call at 612-8392239.

BY GREG KLEVEN • SUN NEWSPAPERS The “Battle of Bloomington” football winner wasn’t determined until Kennedy put together a scoring spurt in the fourth quarter. The Eagles won the Bloomington football traveling trophy for the third consecutive season by defeating Jefferson 41-14 in South Suburban Conference action Oct. 7 at Bloomington Stadium. Kennedy led by only seven points (2114) entering the fourth quarter before outscoring the Jaguars 20-0 to improve its record to 2-4. Jefferson is 1-5. “Our offense played very well in the first half but maybe we got a little too conservative early in the second half,” said Kennedy coach Dick Weinberger. “But our defense came up with great plays that gave us good field position later in the game.” Jefferson coach Jon Leverenz lamented his team’s five turnovers. “You can’t expect to win when you commit five turnovers,” said Leverenz. “We are getting better and playing hard but must improve our tackling and blocking.” Kennedy led 21-7 after the first quarter. Senior running back Lexis Jones scored on runs of 53 and 2 yards. Travon Hearns completed a 13-yard pass to Nick Warren for another Eagle touchdown. Abu Kamara kicked all three extra points. Jefferson’s touchdown came on a 39yard run by Matt Debianchi. The Jaguars cut the Eagle advantage to 21-14 by halftime as Marquis Shepreaux caught a 14-yard touchdown pass from Joe Carlson. Charles Fitch kicked the extra point. That 21-14 lead held until Kennedy broke the game open with three touchdowns in the final quarter. Jones scored his third touchdown on a 22-yard run.
