BY PAUL GROESSEL – SUN NEWSPAPERS Results of U.S. Census Bureau surveys released in late October show an array of economic characteristics among four cities in the Twin Cities western suburbs. The American Community Survey results were released Oct. 27 and reflect three-year estimates of data that was collected between Jan. 1, 2008, and Dec. 31, 2010. The survey results take stock of economic, educational, employment and other housing details for cities, states and the country. This survey is taken every year, compared to the U.S. Census, which is taken every ten years and is considered the official population count for the United States. Here’s a breakdown of some of the employment and income statistics for Eden Prairie, Edina, Richfield and Bloomington. (All data, except city populations, was taken from the U.S. Census Bureau’s 2008-2010 American Community Survey and was accessed through searching the online American Fact Finder, factfinder2.census.gov.)

Minnesota Vikings linebacker Erin Henderson greets Oak Grove Middle School student Sally Plampton during his Nov. 1 visit to the Bloomington school. Henderson’s visit was part of a reward the Bloomington middle school earned from the Vikings and Xcel Energy for winning an energy conversation contest. The school received the most votes through a Facebook contest, earning a $2,000 award and an opportunity to meet Vikings linebacker Erin Henderson. (Submitted Photo)

Bloomington veteran recalls harrowing in-air experiences of WWII Schools to host flag ceremonies Friday BY MIKE HANKS – SUN NEWSPAPERS Veterans Day is heralded as a day to remember those who served their country. For some, it’s but another day that reminds them of the sacrifices many made for their country. “When I go to bed at night, I try not to think of it,” said Jorgen Jorgensen, an Army pilot during World War II. “Some nights I don’t, and too many nights I do,” he said recently. Jorgensen, 87, now calls Bloomington home. The farm kid from Connecticut remembers his adven-

His father wanted Jorgensen to remain at home, helping on the family farm, Jorgensen recalled. Jorgensen had wanted to serve in either the Marines or Navy air corps. He was turned down by both branches of the military, and when he was drafted he entered the Army. “I wanted to be a navigator,” Jorgensen said. He learned a thing or two about navigation, albeit from the cockpit, as the Army needed pilots. Jorgensen learned to fly the C-46 VETERAN: TO NEXT PAGE

He wanted to be a navigator as he thought the skills would be useful to him later in life. As a pilot Jorgensen was certain his tour would end with a plane crash. His concerns for his safety were certainly justified. His transports included flying over the Himalaya Mountains, a dangerous trek that resulted in many plane crashes into the mountainside, he recalled. Jorgensen had a few close calls during his flying days. There was an emergency landing when his plane’s rudder wouldn’t work, and on one occasion he got lost trying to fly back to his base. To the surprise of the troops on his base, Jorgensen made it back. “We already considered you dead,” he was told. Many of Jorgensen’s flights were reminders of two fellow pilots who attempted to transport 7.5 tons of fuel. In order to take off, the plane had to

Parking ramp skirmish ends with 1 arrest BY MIKE HANKS – SUN NEWSPAPERS A dust up between the former and current boyfriends of a 21-year-old Minneapolis woman resulted in the former boyfriend being charged with a felony, gross misdemeanor and two misdemeanors following an incident in a Mall of America parking ramp. The 24-year-old Minneapolis man was charged Oct. 31 in Hennepin County District Court with one felony count of fleeing a police officer in a motor vehicle, one gross misdemeanor charge of third-degree damage to property, a misdemeanor charge of fifthdegree assault and a misdemeanor domestic assault charge. If convicted he faces up to three years in prison for the felony count and a $5,000 fine. The gross misdemeanor count carries a penalty of up to one year in jail while the misdemeanor charges carry penalties of up to 90 days in jail. The suspect was arrested Oct. 28 following a reported altercation with another 24-year-old Minneapolis man. Bloomington police received a report
KAREL SMITH 612-986-3704
of a fight in a mall parking ramp at 9:35 p.m., according to Bloomington Police Commander Mark Stehlik. The first officer to arrive at the scene observed a vehicle matching the description of the suspect’s vehicle exiting the parking ramp. The officer attempted to conduct a traffic stop as the vehicle was leaving the ramp, but the driver continued to drive away, Stehlik explained. Although the vehicle’s driver initially ignored the officer’s attempt to stop it, the driver complied without incident after a pursuit of about one mile, Stehlik noted. The suspect is accused of confronting his ex-girlfriend and her boyfriend in the parking lot ramp. The two parties arrived at the ramp at the same time, and the suspect told his exgirlfriend that she needed to leave him immediately, according to the complaint. When the woman declined, the suspect began punching her boyfriend. The woman tried to separate the two men, but the suspect pushed her aside. After the assault the suspect took a baseball bat from his vehicle and

knocked out the rear light’s of the victim’s vehicle, the complaint said. The woman’s boyfriend had injuries to his neck and a witness reported seeing the suspect assault the man and damage his vehicle, the complaint noted.
Debit card fraud A Chinese restaurant in Minneapolis helped Bloomington police arrest a suspect in a missing wallet case at Normandale Community College in Bloomington. A 20-year-old Minneapolis woman was arrested Oct. 28 after investigators connected her to fraudulent use of a debit card at a Bloomington gas station and Bill’s Garden Chinese Gourmet restaurant in Minneapolis, according to Stehlik. A 19-year-old Savage woman reported her wallet missing Oct. 24 while on the college campus. She canceled the credit cards in her wallet but forgot to cancel a debit card. The card was used to purchase $60.71 worth of gas from the Bloomington gas station and $8.08
worth of food from Bill’s Garden, Stehlik said. The Savage woman is an acquaintance of the Bill’s Garden owner and asked about the use of her debit card. The restaurant provided her with a photo from its surveillance video showing a woman making a take-out purchase at the time of the debit card transaction. The restaurant was able to identify the woman in the photo as a regular take-out customer, according to Stehlik. The suspect had provided the restaurant with a phone number when she placed her take-out order. Bloomington police contacted the woman about the debit card and she claimed to have found the wallet on a restroom floor at the college, acknowledging that she knew that it was wrong to use the card for her purchases, Stehlik added.

Police FROM PREVIOUS PAGE had picked up his 15-year-old son from the airport was arrested on suspicion of driving while impaired. The man was arrested shortly after he rear-ended a vehicle near Mall of
America at 6:45 p.m. Oct. 28. An officer checking on the vehicles following the collision suspected the Bloomington man had been drinking. The man failed field sobriety tests and had a blood-alcohol concentration of .22 percent, Stehlik said. Because the man’s 15-year-old son was in the vehicle he faces a possible second-degree DUI charge.

I may have been brainwashed But, really, books are good When I was a kid, I would frequently mispronounce words. Frequently. I bet there’s a study done by someone more educated than I on the subject clearly delineating why and how this works, but I’m chalking it up to the massive amount of reading I did as a child coupled with the obverse statistic showing the time spent socializing or speaking with other people. I learned to read and in the process picked up words that I’d never heard spoken before and thus did not know the correct pronunciation. If anyone were to need to shoulder the burden of this affectation, I would place that blame squarely on the shoulders of my mother for one particular reason: She made us read. Well, maybe “made” isn’t the right word for it. Instead, she blackmailed us with reading. Let me set the scene. It’s midafternoon, and my siblings and I are home from school but lacking any real interest in doing anything productive. Enter my mother. “Whoever’s not reading is get-

ting chores.” Suddenly we’re all literary enthusiasts. Maybe it’s that childhood conditioning to view reading, books and overall literacy as workavoided rather than as a chore itself that drove me to become a lifelong lover of literature. After all, post-high school, I went on to an institution of higher education and earned a degree in English, and I work with weaving words on a semi-daily basis. I believe in the idea that being able to effectively communicate is a key factor in getting ahead in this world. One could make the argument that the speed of communication and transmission of information in this day and age has made it impossible to be anything but an improv artist. We’re forced by the immediacy of our culture to think on our feet and get responses out more and more quickly. And what’s the advice professional authors so often give to aspiring writers? Read. I’d offer
that it doesn’t matter where you want to go career-wise; being able to communicate effectively is a required skill for any industry. Those siblings I mentioned went on to work in advertising, marketing and the culinary arts. For those of you who hoped I would make it through this column without making it even slightly self-referential, I’m sorry, but better luck next time. When I was thinking of the best way to tie the importance of literacy to one of my favorite topics – community involvement – I was sent a message about an organization that promotes reading and community all in one swell foop. Little Free Libraries are, to be simplistic, little wooden boxes full of books. With me so far? These little boxes are built, filled with books and put up on private property where people can access them, taking a book and leaving a book. Honestly, I think it’s genius. And not because we lack opportunities to find books in our communities. The Hennepin, Dakota and Anoka county library systems are laudable in their own right for the programs, services and books they provide to the communities. Sure one can donate money
or lobby for larger pieces of the municipal budget pie for the local library. I’m not saying residents of any community shouldn’t patronize their local library ‘cause they certainly should. But there are those who are unable to do these things. Putting a small library at the end of any street brings the books to the potential readers. There are already locations in St. Louis Park, Minneapolis and St. Paul, among others. Putting one up is as simply as, well, putting one up. The really nifty thing about this sort of movement is the ownership. The whole process requires the participants to, well, participate in a much larger function than if they were simply a user of one of the county libraries. There’s an inherent trust in leaving something out for someone else to literally take. That trust is essential, I think, to the development of any community, and anything we can do, especially something as self-maintaining as a program like this, is great. For more information on the Little Free Library project and how to get involved, visit littlefreelibrary.org.

This is the catalyst for another first for me and also an excuse to indulge in the wondrous foods that circulate the dinner tables during the holiday season. In years past, I traveled to
my hometown Appleton, Wis., every year for Christmas and Thanksgiving, while my wife sometimes accompanied me. But more often than not, she spent those holidays with her family in the Twin Cities. Census FROM PAGE 1 Bloomington’s poverty rate among families, 4.7 percent, was much lower than it’s poverty rate among the general population, 8.3 percent. Of those in the labor force, 5 percent were unemployed. Approximately 69 percent of Bloomington residents 16 and older were considered in the labor force. Bloomington’s population was an estimated 82,893 and had 35,801 households. The median household income was $57,823 per year.
Eden Prairie Eden Prairie’s people infrastructure remained relatively steadfast during a housing and economic downturn that plagued much of the state and country. Overall, Eden Prairie was educated, employed and well compensated; of the 38,866 residents 25 and older, 23,815 held a bachelor’s degree or higher. The median household income was $86,509 per year, and the unemployment rate was 4 percent among those in the labor force. Approximately 75 percent of Eden Prairie residents 16 and older were considered in the labor force. Eden Prairie’s population was an
Hankey FROM PREVIOUS PAGE that. I meant as inseparable as the Vikings and Minnesota. What? They might leave the state, you say? Nevermind. Let’s just say we’re now inseparable. We concluded to spend every other year with each side of our family for Thanksgiving. Christmas, on the other hand, is more complicated and I will spare those details for another time. In 2010, we traveled to Appleton to have Thanksgiving with my mom, sister and my sister’s future in-laws. This year, we will stay in Minnesota for Turkey Day. But returning to the point of the column. This Thanksgiving will be the first time my wife and I host her mother’s side of the family for the annual dinner. Now, we will not be accommodating her entire family. When fully assembled, her mom’s side could nearly field a game day roster for the Vikings. At most, we will be hosting a dozen people in our modest-sized home. The quarters will be cozy, but that’s how holidays should be.
Bloomington household earnings: - Less than $10,000 – 4.4 percent - $10,000 to $14,999 – 3.6 percent - $15,000 to $24,999 – 7.9 percent - $25,000 to $34,999 – 9.8 percent - $35,000 to $49,999 – 15.9 percent - $50,000 to $74,999 – 20.4 percent - $75,000 to $99,999 – 14.6 percent - $100,000 to $149,999 – 14.1 percent - $150,000 to $199,999 – 4.7 percent - $200,000 or more – 4.7 percent estimated 60,092 and had 23,189 households. Although the median income was about $86,000, nearly half of the households made more than $100,000 per year. Overall, 6.4 percent of Eden Prairie residents lived in poverty, according to the results, and 5 percent of families were in poverty.
Edina Edina also faired relatively well during the three-year economic turmoil of 2008-2010. The median household income was $81,417 per year, and the unemployment rate was 3.7 percent among those in the labor force. Approximately 65 percent of
The food assignments will be divided among our guests to alleviate the cooking burden for my wife and I. I’m not sure what our assignment will be, but I do know I will thoroughly enjoy the smorgasbord that will likely fill our table. With the numerous diet fads and health and wellness awareness that has permeated our society, overblown and unhealthy holiday meals should be enjoyed for what they are. It would be fatalistic to indulge daily in the kinds of foods that comprise a holiday spread, not too mention expensive. But don’t give in to the guilt you may feel for going back for seconds, thirds, what have you. It may seem uncouth to encourage overeating, but if you’re healthy enough to do it, more power to you. Whether we want to acknowledge it, many of us will have too much to eat over the holidays. All I’m saying is embrace it, own it and don’t make it a habit. We should be thankful for a couple days a year: We have the ability to overindulge in delicious foods. I know I will, even if only for a few days. But, it could lead to another first for the upcoming year – a gym membership.
Edina residents 16 and older were considered in the labor force. Edina’s population was an estimated 47,941 and had 20,376 households. Although the median income was about $81,000, 67 percent of the households earned $50,000 per year or more. Overall, 3.6 percent of Edina residents lived in poverty, according to the results, and 1.8 percent of families were in poverty.

7.8 percent among those in the labor force, was higher than the state’s 5 percent. Approximately 73 percent of Richfield residents 16 and older were considered in the labor force. It also has a higher poverty rate than the other three cities. Overall, 12.6 percent of Richfield residents lived in poverty, according to the results, and 7.8 percent of families were in poverty. Richfield’s population was an estimated 35,228 and had 14,957 households, which ran the income gamut. The median household income was $48,736 per year. Info: factfinder2.census.gov.

Bumper-to-bumper in the ‘burbs Census Bureau: Most in West Metro drive alone to work, few carpool BY PAUL GROESSEL – SUN NEWSPAPERS Rush hour traffic in the west suburbs could tell you most people drive themselves to work on a regular basis, but recent survey results shed light on the sometimes crowded suburban roadways. In Eden Prairie, Edina, Minnetonka, Bloomington and Richfield, not too many people take public transportation to work, a few carpool and even less ride their bike, according to three-year survey results from the U.S. Census Bureau. In those cities, 71-81 percent of those employed drive themselves to work, and carpooling is in single digits for most cities, according to the 2008-2010 American Community Survey results. It’s a trend that Commuter Services, commissioned in 2002 by the Interstate 494 Corridor Commission, has been trying to change. The commission’s three-member staff, run by Executive Director Melissa Madison, works with state, metro and local organizations to decrease road congestion and promote alternative commuting methods. It has held more than
150 on-site employee consultations per year, and it offers individual route help for commuters traveling along or near Interstate 494 or living in Richfield, Bloomington, Edina, Eden Prairie and Minnetonka. It partners with the Minnesota Department of Transportation, the Metropolitan Council, Metro Transit and Southwest Metro Transit. Madison said the commission has had contact with 600 large- and mediumsized businesses in the area, and it also has worked with multi-tenant office buildings. Once the commission can work with a company, employees become more aware of their commuting options. The commission can help people on an individual basis, so they don’t have to guide themselves through transitways, whether its by foot, pedal or petroleum. “Often times, people are not aware that resources are available to help them find someone to carpool with,” Madison said. The commission also provides traveling and route advice for bikers and walkers. Its outreach efforts have seemed to work. In 2010, Commuter Services estimates that it prevented 17.9 million vehiCOMMUTE: TO NEXT PAGE

Bistro FROM PAGE 18 Robert Fronckoski, Paragon director of development. “They loved the space.” Referring to the lounge area, which offers capacity for around 170 patrons, the area features casual seating for socializing and is adjacent to a pair of traditional restaurant seating areas, as well as two theaters with state-of-the-art technology for optimal movie viewing. “As a theater, we have all digital projectors, the Sony 4K technology,” Fronckoski said. “We are one of two theaters in Minnesota with that.” The second theater is also owned and operated by Paragon and is located in Rochester. According to Paragon Food and Beverage Director Andrew Holmes, the entire upper level – which is home to two movie screens, the social lounge, and traditional seating that includes the “Van Gogh Room” – can be rented for nearly any occasion, such as birthdays, corporate gatherings, anniversaries, and more. “It’s a great place to rent out,” Fronckoski said. The Van Gogh Room is removed from the social lounge and other seating. It is a more relaxed environment for patrons to spend time before or after a movie, or for those just seeking to gather and socialize for an evening. It features LED telelvision screens mounted on the walls with couch-style seats and coffee tables. Holmes added that the room is Van Gogh exclusive with regard to the beverages offered, adding that so far the Mezz is the only location in the state that can make that claim. But Holmes was also quick to comment on the menu, since he has experience creating unique dining concepts at award-winning restaurants and clubs in Europe, Las Vegas, and nationwide hotel brands Sussex and Kessler. “We are bringing fine dining to the … No Motels, No Hype Just Honest Pricing Everyday !

theater experience,” Holmes said. “Just because you are at the movies, doesn’t mean you have to eat nachos for dinner. You can still find your favorite concession treats in the lobby, but our menu is not what you would expect to find at a movie theater.” Inspired by the opportunity to change how people think of eating at the movies, the menu mixes American, Mediterranean, Asian and Caribbean dishes. “The Mezz … is unique in that it offers fresh, interesting food and innovative drinks along with the only premier VIP luxury movie-going experience in the south metro,” said Mike Whalen, Paragon CEO. “We offer something for everyone: a lively bar, great takeout, and a sit-down restaurant perfect for a date, an outing with friends or a special event, whether you are seeing a movie or not.” Concurring with Whalen, Fronckoski and Holmes said part of the Mezz’s draw is its flexibility in offering any kind of evening – be it dinner and a movie, dinner before a movie, just dinner, time spent socializing, or any combination. Holmes added that many menu items were created with the filmgoers in mind. With mezz meaning “small plate” and tapas meaning “hand food,” according to Holmes, these items are much more conducive to dining in a movie atmosphere

with some space limitations. The two theaters also feature seating with adjustable arm rests to create a “love seat,” according to Fronckoski, as well as around 75 “premier” seats for those 21 years of age and up, which account for the last four rows in each theater. “When you purchase your ticket, in person or online, you’re able to change the seat and row,” Fronckoski said. He added that those just arriving would
have the opportunity to choose from what is available. Unlike other attempts at the same concept, Fronckoski said the big difference between the two is the quality of films. “We are doing Hollywood blockbusters opening weekend. They were doing second-run movies,” Fronckoski said, adding that these were movies that had already appeared in major theaters.
Right Way Painting Solutions After one of the most brutal winters we have encountered in the past 30 years, we have all found things that need repair or replacement on our homes. Many of us have needed to put off work being done to our homes do to economic hard times. Many of us also put off projects to save money in case things got worse. Our home values have gone down which makes it hard to even think about selling our homes. The reality is that we have to keep our property in good shape to maintain our values. Painting the exterior of our homes is by far the best value to preserving our wood surfaces and windows. We can also dramatically change the appearance of the inside of our homes by updating colors. Painting woodwork is a very affordable option compared to replacing old trim around our homes. In many older homes our windows are still good, but the old stain and varnish are not holding up any more. You can save thousands of dollars by painting these windows verses replacing windows. Updating your
basement family room can also be as easy as painting the paneling. I’m Paul Moore from Rightway Painting Solutions. I’ve been in the painting business for over 20 years. Being a former Shop Teacher, I have a good background in finishing and wood replacement. We do both residential and commercial painting. We do work for several Town Home Associations, Nursing Homes and Residential Properties. We give our customers great value by being able to not just paint. We replace or repair wood, repair and reglaze older windows and reside areas that need replacement. We also repair decks and re stain decks. On the inside we repair walls, remove wallpaper, enamel wood work and paint paneling. We offer a 2 year labor warrantee on our labor, provide references and we would be happy to give you a free estimate. For all of your painting needs give us a call at 612-8392239.

Neither Bloomington team reached the state high school football playoffs, but two other teams from their conference did. South Suburban Conference champion Lakeville North will be in the Class 5A quarterfinals, as will Prior Lake, which finished third in the SSC. Lakeville North will play CretinDerham Hall in a battle of undefeated teams at 5 p.m. Friday, Nov. 11, at the Metrodome. Both teams are 10-0. The winner will face defending state champion Wayzata (10-0) or Moorhead (8-3) in the semifinals Saturday, Nov. 19, also at the Metrodome. Prior Lake (8-3) will play TotinoGrace (10-1) at 8 p.m. Friday in the second half of a doubleheader at the Metrodome. The winner plays Eden Prairie (9-1) or Anoka (9-1) in the semifinals Nov. 18. The Eden Prairie-Anoka game is 7 p.m. Friday at Osseo High School. Wayzata and Moorhead play at 8 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 12, at St. Cloud State University. The Class 5A championship game will be 7 p.m. Friday, Nov. 25.
Tumberg, a senior midfielder from Jefferson, recently was named to the Class AA All-State boys soccer team. He was his team’s second-leading scorer and helped the Jaguars to a 12-3-4 record. Jefferson finished second in Section 2AA to eventual state champion Eden Prairie.
Swim sections Bloomington Jefferson and Bloomington Kennedy are competing in the Section 2AA girls swimming and diving meet this week in Prior Lake. Swimming preliminaries were Nov. 9. Diving preliminaries will be Thursday, Nov. 10, and swimming finals will be 6 p.m. Friday, Nov. 11. All competition will be at Hidden Oaks Middle School. Favorites for the team championship are Lakeville North and Prior Lake, two of the three teams that tied for the South Suburban Conference dual meet championship. The state Class AA meet is Nov. 17-19 at the University of Minnesota Aquatic Center. – Compiled by Mike Shaughnessy
Jan Ketterson The Jefferson senior ran in his fourth state high school cross country meet last weekend after winning the Section 3AA boys individual championship Oct. 26 at the University of Minnesota Golf Course.
Johnathan Hess Hess, a junior, led the Kennedy boys at the Section 3AA cross country meet, finishing 20th of 104 runners. His 5kilometer time was 16 minutes, 45 seconds. Jefferson senior Jan Ketterson held the lead at the state Class AA boys cross country meet before his body rebelled at the pace he was setting. He dropped back and finished in 67th place. Jefferson volleyball did its best against the best Swimmers head to sections BY DAVE PEDERSEN – SUN NEWSPAPERS Bloomington Jefferson did not make it out of the Class 3A, Section 3 volleyball tournament and qualify for state, but it did prove it could play with the best of them. The Jaguars advanced to the section semifinals Nov. 2 against Lakeville South, ranked No. 1 in the state and 24-1 at the time. Jefferson lost the first game 26-24, but evened the match by taking the second
game 25-22. Lakeville South, playing on its home court, took the next two games 25-19 and 25-22. Jefferson, ranked as high as No. 2 in the state at one time this season, entered sections as the No. 4 seed, showing the strength of the competition. It also showed how the team was impacted by injuries to key players such as Haley Bodway, who has more than 1,500 career kills. Bodway recovered from a sprained ankle and torn hamstring in time for the last two matches. She missed most of the regular season. “We finished a long, difficult and JEFFERSON: TO NEXT PAGE
Morgan Curry The Kennedy eighth-grader finished 22nd in the Section 3AA girls cross country meet, finishing her 4K race in 15:38.
Karin Bull Bull, a senior captain, had doubledigit kills in Kennedy’s two matches in the Class 3A, Section 3 volleyball playoffs. She had 11 kills (plus three blocks and 12 digs) in the Eagles’ victory over Simley and 10 kills in their quarterfinal loss to Eagan.
Hannah Werth Werth, a senior defender from Jefferson, was named to the Class AA girls All-State soccer team by the state coaches association. Jefferson FROM PREVIOUS PAGE rewarding season with all our might,” said coach Michelle Grice. “We pulled together through it all. I was proud of them for fighting to the end, against all the things that could have made them want to quit. We still finished our season with courage and played our hearts out.” Grice called the loss to No. 1 Lakeville South a heartbreaker, but said it still was a rewarding season. “I have coached for 11 years at the college, high school and JO [Junior Olympic] levels and the past two years have been the greatest and most enjoyable coaching experience of my career,” said Grice. “The experience of coaching at Jefferson has inspired me, grounded me and changed me for the better.” The team will graduate eight players from the varsity roster: Bodway, Emily Schadow, Eliza Zachary, Kelley Wollak, Ivy Shepherd, Brianna Fesler-Faue, Britney Scherber and Ashley Peper. “As soon as the team was out of the gym they clung to each other,” adds Grice. “To see them find a place of comfort in each other, and know that they were in this together, was a special moment for me. My personal vision for them has always been creating family and competitive volleyball, believing we can create a culture that models for a life-building experience.”
Swimming Jefferson swimming coach Paula Lee is hoping the Jaguars can get three relays to the state meet. They will get the chance to qualify when they swim at the Section 2AA meet this week at Hidden Oaks Middle School in Prior Lake. Jefferson relays were seeded in the top six for the preliminaries, which were Nov. 9. Diving competition is Thursday, Nov. 10, and swimming finals are 6 p.m. Friday, Nov. 11. Individual hopefuls include sophomore Katie Friesz, senior Jill Crandall, junior Noelle Robb and junior Sam Aamot. Also showing promise are senior Grace Mandich in sprint freestyle events and eighth-grader Maria Vaudreuil in the 500 freestyle and 100 breaststroke. “They are experienced swimmers with goals in mind and are very excited about the section meet,” said Lee. “They swim with heart and determination.” The coach says two divers, junior Hadley Byrne and newcomer Christine Koch, also have a chance to make it to state.
In the Community, With the Community, For the Community
Jefferson was 1-8 in South Suburban Conference meets, with the victory 11867 over Kennedy in October. Jefferson’s final regular-season meet was a 97-86 loss to Burnsville on Oct. 27. Burnsville led by only five points going into the final race, the 400 freestyle relay. Blaze teams took first and third in that event to clinch the team victory. Koch scored 192.22 points in diving to take first place in the Burnsville meet. Jefferson’s Byrne and Hannah Szafraniec were second and third. Mandich swam the 100 freestyle in 59.80 seconds to place first. Aamot was first in the 100 backstroke in 1 minute, 9.22 seconds. Crandall won the 100 breaststroke in 1:14.83. Vaudreuil, Mandich, Crandall and Robb were first in the 200 freestyle relay in 1:48.73. Aamot won two individual events, the 100 butterfly and 100 backstroke, in Jefferson’s victory over Kennedy.
Cross country It was senior Jan Ketterson’s goal all cross country season to be the state Class AA boys champion. The Section 3AA champion was ranked No. 3 in the state all year, but struggled over the finish line in 67th place at last Saturday’s state meet in Northfield. “While he knew he could run a conservative race and probably finish in the top five, Jan also knew that his top two competitors this season had better sprinting legs that he did,” said coach Jeremy Kersten. “If he was in a pack with 200 meters to go he knew he would have not come out on top.” So, Ketterson’s strategy was to go for it by pushing hard early and trying to open a big lead at the 2.5-mile mark. Going out too strong is always a danger in the sport. “Jan was in second place at the 2mile mark of the race and had opened up a lead after 2.5 miles,” adds Kersten. “However, he had pushed too hard to gain this advantage and his body just shut down. Jan limped the last 800 meters of the race, his muscles overwhelmed with lactic acid.” Kersten said the senior’s determination at state was admirable. It was Ketterson’s fourth state meet and he wanted it to be the most memorable. “Many of us may have been happy with being the third best in the state, but Jan put it all on the line to be a champion,” said his coach. “While I think Jan was disappointed with the final result of the race, I don’t think he would have done it any differently.” Ketterson will move on to race on the Nordic ski team and run distance events in track.
Jefferson’s Eliza Zachary tries to put the ball to the floor during a Class 3A, Section volleyball semifinal match against Lakeville South on Nov. 2. No. 1-ranked Lakeville South defeated Jefferson 24-26, 25-22, 25-19, 25-22. The Jaguars finished their season 21-8. (Photo by Mike Shaughnessy • Sun Newspapers)

Kennedy swimmers search for section meet success BY DAVE PEDERSEN • SUN NEWSPAPERS Kelly Jeans of Bloomington Kennedy hopes to show teammates the way to the state swimming and diving meet. The journey starts at the Section 2AA meet this week at Hidden Oaks Middle School in Prior Lake. Preliminaries in swimming were Nov. 9. Prelims in swimming events are 6 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 10,
and finals are 6 p.m. Friday, Nov. 11. The top two in each individual swimming event, the top two teams in each relay and the top four divers automatically advance to the state meet Nov. 17-19 at the University of Minnesota. Swimmers also can advance to beating state qualifying times in the section finals. Jeans is the returning section cham-
pion in diving and is undefeated in conference dual meets this season. “For the swimmers in the meet we are hoping first and foremost for time drops,” said Kennedy coach Tom Walsh. “We have been training for the section meet all season. We started resting for this meet over a week ago with our sights set on dropping our times.” Walsh said junior Missy Gardner has a great chance of making it to the second day of section competition (top 16) in the 200- and 500-yard freestyle events. Junior Naomi Wellumson has been strong in the 50 and 100 freestyles. Walsh said he hopes eighth-grader Sophie Groen can advance to the finals in the 200 individual medley or 100 backstroke. With there being only eight teams in the section, all of the relays will make it to the second day provided they avoid disqualification in the preliminaries. “The coaches are encouraging them to have safe starts in prelims and save the fast, risky ones for the finals,” Walsh said.
Senior Katja Becker will swim the 100 freestyle and breaststroke. Ninth-grader Rose Berg will work the 50 freestyle and butterfly. Sophomore Jasmine Bryant is entered in the breaststroke.
