Filled with interactive exhibits and activities, The Works also provides classroom instruction for elementary school groups in a setting far removed from their day-to-day surWeekly roundings. Dream comes true for Bloomington woman After more than two years of treatment for ovarian cancer, a vacation is welcome BY MIKE HANKS – SUN NEWSPAPERS It will be a dream come true for Kelly Johnson of Bloomington when she and her husband take their two sons to Orlando next year. Their plans include a visit to The Wizarding World of Harry Potter – the theme park area inspired by the popular books – and some time at the beach, especially since the boys have never seen the ocean. As a matter of fact, the Johnson’s 16- and 10-year-old sons have never flown on a plane. The spring getaway is still in the planning stages, and the trip is a source of great excitement for the family. The family didn’t win the trip in a raffle, but it is a gift, a gift Kelly Johnson would have gladly declined

three years ago. The Johnson family’s trip was given to them by the Minnesota Ovarian Cancer Alliance of Minneapolis. The family was informed a few weeks ago they were the beneficiaries of a $4,000 award as part of MOCA’s 2011 Dream Awards. The family was presented with their award Nov. 15 in their own backyard. MOCA held its award presentations in Bloomington. The Dream Awards are the result of an anonymous donor who, for the third time in four years, donated money to MOCA for the express purpose of making dreams come true for ovarian cancer survivors, according to Kathleen Gavin, MOCA’s executive director. A committee reviewed applications from ovarian cancer patients, both survivors and those being treated, and granted more than $30,000 to fulfill the dream of 10 ovarian cancer patients. The donor reached out to MOCA in 2008 to provide the financial support for the awards, and since then more than $100,000 has been donated for the awards. Applications are accepted from

patients and survivors around the state, and MOCA receives “far more than we can fund,” Gavin said. The dreams range from a family vacation for the Johnsons to in vitro fertilization for a 27-year-old ovarian cancer survivor who is no longer able to give birth to a child. Another woman dreamed of an easier life around her home, and that dream included a working dishwasher, Gavin noted. For Johnson, who works in the library of a downtown Minneapolis law firm, a family vacation to celebrate the end of more than two years of cancer treatments was her dream when she applied for the award in August. Johnson was 41 when she was diagnosed with cancer in February 2009. Following surgery and chemotherapy it appeared that her recovery was a success, but after three months it was determined she still had cancer, so she began a prolonged schedule of chemotherapy. Her treatments limited her ability to work, and at times left her too fatigued to do everyday tasks around the house.

The ongoing treatment meant her husband T.J. and her sons had to take on many of the day-to-day responsibilities around the house. Johnson’s cancer treatments ended in June, and since then she has resumed working full time. Her dream was to spend a week of vacation together as a family, and taking her sons to the Harry Potter theme park seemed like a small gesture in comparison for everything her sons did for her, she explained. The MOCA award wasn’t necessary for the family to spend a week of vacation together, but flying to Florida for vacation is “an opportunity we wouldn’t be able to do without this award,” she said. The Dream Awards are funded separately from MOCA’s primary programs and services. The organization offers programs and services for survivors and their families and also funds ovarian cancer research. Donations to the organization are not used to fund the Dream Awards, Gavin noted. Info: mnovarian.org.

Local retailers brace for Black Friday Many stores preparing for midnight opening BY ANDREW WIG – SUN NEWSPAPERS Thanksgiving dinner is no longer confined to cozy dining rooms and basement card tables. For some, the sidewalk outside any big-box retailer will do. This is where the most hardcore holiday shoppers will feast if they want to be first in line for Black Friday, the traditional kick-off to the holiday shopping season. “We had a family the last two years that was here Wednesday night,” said Eric Link, manager of the Richfield Best Buy. The mother brought them Thanksgiving dinner that day — to eat in the shadow of the store’s blue and yellow façade. With scenes like that in mind, Link and other retailers are getting ready for one of their biggest days of the year, a day that is beginning ever earlier. After last year’s 3 a.m. opening, Mall

of America enjoyed a record-breaking Black Friday crowd, welcoming more than 200,000 shoppers that day, said Bridget Jewell, the mall’s public relations manager. But some wanted more. “We had some stores approach us and say, ‘Hey, we want to open at midnight on Black

Many big-box retailers such as Best Buy and Target will for the first time open that day at midnight, too. “It was a market reaction, I think more than anything, to some of our competitors opening at midnight,” Link said. The Best Buy manager expects the early open to possibly spur an even more avid Thanksgiving crowd than previous years, when shoppers would arrive more than 24 hours early — forming lines that would stretch halfway around the store. He and Best Buy staff are already bracing for the crush, which amounts to “about 20 minutes of controlled chaos,” Link said. Typically, after the feverish Friday morning entrance, the shoppers line up in queues for the various “door buster” deals. Then, “once those line cues are set up there’s really nothing to worry about,” said Link, who will be partici-

Friday,’” Jewell said. The mall obliged them. And now, in a domino effect, many retailers in the mall have followed suit in order to avoid eating the dust of the postThanksgiving herd. More than 100 retailers in the Mall of America will open along with the mall at midnight, and other malls are keeping with the trend. Numerous stores at Southdale Center and Eden Prairie Center also will open at midnight Nov. 25.

Shopping FROM PREVIOUS PAGE pating in his seventh Black Friday as a Best Buy employee. He still expects some shenanigans, however. To help organize the chaos, the store distributes tickets for its “door buster items to the throngs waiting outside as police officers watch. The law enforcement presence has proven necessary, Link said. Some shoppers will try to scalp their tickets or produce counterfeit ones, and in the process things can get out of control, he said. “I’ve had fist fights over products, Link recounted. The manager at Hub Hobby Center in Richfield has heard the stories. “It gets kind of ridiculous, he said. His store will play it cool, opening for Black Friday only one or two hours earlier than the normal 9 a.m. holiday opening time. (The exact operating hours are yet to be determined.) “The first few hours are pretty crazy, but it’s not stomping-over-each-othercrazy, Meyer said. The Acadian Candles store next door to Hub Hobby is similarly choosing to sit back. Black Friday used to be an exceptionally busy day for the store,

but “it’s just changed, totally, store manager Patty Fasching said. “It used to be they were waiting at the door, because that’s when the sale started, Fasching recalled. It was “absolutely crazy. Fasching said that in response to changing consumer behavior, her holiday sale now stretches from early November to Christmas. “Now, because of the economy, they tend to buy sooner, she said. They’re not saving for Black Friday; they’re spreading it out. Why try to keep up with the behemoth retailers, anyway? “The big companies, you know, are the ones that really want to get you in on that day, Fasching said, “and it’s really hard to compete with that. While Fasching gets a good night’s rest Thanksgiving night, workers at the big stores will be gearing up, although not necessarily enthusiastically. Employees at retailers including Best Buy and Target have started popular online petitions in response to the new of the midnight openings. Link said he has heard no such complaints at his store. “You’re going to find two different types of people: people who look forward to this day being over, he said. “And then you’re going to find people that love being here because it’s a rush. Link identifies with the latter. “This is our Super Bowl. We make this happen right now.

For more than two hours last week I was a hostage. Unlike others who have been through such harrowing circumstances, I hope to be a hostage again some day. Better yet, I want to be the perpetrator of a hostage crisis. Last week a longtime wish was fulfilled, I was a role player in a police training exercise. This particular exercise, on a brisk Wednesday afternoon east of Mall of America, included Bloomington’s police and fire departments, as well as Allina paramedics. My longstanding offer to be a role player in a police department training exercise was accepted. I was invited to be a hostage. As a hostage I had a relatively minor role, but as the old saying goes, there are no small parts, only small actors. Years ago I portrayed a member of the media in an Excelsior Fire District training exercise. I had to be nosier and pushier than I’d be at an accident scene, but I had no insight into the planning or execution of the drill. As a hostage last week I watched several police personnel plan and execute the drill from inside an empty office building. It was a fascinating experience. Upon reporting for duty I found I was one of about 10 volunteers in the drill. Most of the volunteers were police department chaplains, some who work with the Bloomington Police Department, and others who work with the Burnsville Police Department. Most of us were hostages. Tom was the first called to duty, as he was injured

Steve Harris of Burnsville brandishes an unloaded gun while talking on a cell phone with a Bloomington negotiator Nov. 16 during a training drill in east Bloomington. Harris, a police chaplain in Burnsville, portrayed the perpetrator of a hostage crisis. Police, fire and paramedic personnel participated in the drill, including Bloomington’s bomb squad and SWAT team. (Photo by Mike Hanks – Sun Newspapers) by a bomb explosion that started the drill. Tom’s role was to stagger outside the entrance of the building and drop to the ground as a result of injuries sustained in the explosion. Several of us peeked through the blinds of our holding area to see how long Tom was left lying on the cold concrete. None of us were jealous of his assignment. As I noted, paramedics participated in the training exercise. Given Tom wasn’t actually injured, it might seem silly to have paramedics participate in such a drill, but the reason Tom

was left unattended for several minutes was the fact that nobody on the outside knew if it was safe to approach him. Paramedics may be skilled at treating victims of car accidents or accidental shootings, but it’s not every day that they have to treat an injured person outside the scene of a hostage situation, as a fire burns inside an occupied building. Not only did paramedics have to treat an accident victim under uncertain circumstances, firefighters had to fight a fire under equally uncertain circumstances.

And that was just the beginning of the drill. Public safety professionals had the benefit of knowing that as a drill they wouldn’t be on the scene for eight hours, but that’s about all they knew. The city’s bomb squad and SWAT team participated in the drill, and they had no idea what would happen during the course of the drill. I had some insight, as several drill coordinators were in and out of the building, preparing for the next incident and amendHANKS: TO PAGE 8A

Hanks FROM PAGE 6A ing the scenario as it unfolded. The perpetrator of the hostage crisis was Steve Harris, a Burnsville chaplain. Although he was coached along the way, his role as the perpetrator required improvisational skills at times while talking with a police negotiator repeatedly by cell phone. He started as an angry, unemployed truck driver seeking information from employees of the company that conducted his urine analysis drug test, a test he was told he failed. He went from being angry about the test results to being despondent about his situation. Although Steve knew his character’s fate, nobody on the outside knew what was to come, including Larry, the negotiator who called him repeatedly and had to react and respond to the erratic and varied information Steve provided during their numerous conversations. I was able to hear Steve talking to Larry and the radio communication that unfolded amongst public safety personnel on the outside of the building, something I wouldn’t have had access to in a real hostage situation. The phone conversations, radio communications and drill coordinator discussions provided a high-

ly educational experience. My big moment came more than two hours into the drill, as John and I were released as hostages. We were the last two hostages released before the finale of the drill. We were told to run from the entrance of the building, fleeing for our safety. As I ran out of the building it was a bit odd not to find a line of squad cars outside of the building with cops standing behind them, guns drawn. I guess that only happens in movies. Instead John and I were called over to a SWAT team vehicle south of the entrance. SWAT team members with rifles in hand called us over, and as we ran toward them we were told to put hour hands up as we approached. Nobody told me that I’d be treated as a criminal when I exited the building. Bloomington Police Commander Mark Stehlik explained to me after the drill that SWAT team members can’t know who the people exiting the building are, and therefore have to err on the side of caution, as either of us could have been an accomplice in the crisis and carrying a weapon. John and I were told that if it weren’t a training scenario we’d be handcuffed and searched for weapons while lying on the ground. Since it was a drill I put my hands behind by back as if I were handcuffed, and I was searched for anything that

LAY AWAY FOR CHRISTMAS DELIVERY

In the Community, With the Community, For the Community

could be considered a weapon. Although I was a role player rather than a media observer, I brought a camera with me in case there was a photo opportunity available during the drill. Since I didn’t know how soon I’d be able to return to the building to recover the camera bag, I took it with me as I exited the building. With a camera zipped under my jacket, I exited the building, bag hanging off my shoulder. The SWAT team, however, had no idea if the bag contained anything dangerous, so I was ordered to drop the bag off my shoulder as I approached their vehicle with my hands in the air. I certainly wasn’t prepared to do that, but I didn’t object, either. I learned many things during the drill, but I didn’t need the drill to establish what I already knew. I’m lousy in a crisis situation. As a role player I sat around inside the building chatting casually with the other volunteers. I wasn’t told that the police department’s investigators would be involved in the training drill, or that I’d be quizzed about my observations. As John and I were being questioned about what we saw inside the building, I found that I had a hard time providing descriptions of Steve or Dennis, the last remaining hostage in the scenario. John and I were briefed about certain

behaviors we were supposed to have observed inside the office building, but I couldn’t tell you what Dennis was wearing. Although I remembered a few details about what Steve was wearing, I couldn’t recall whether or not he wore glasses, and this was after more than two hours of being in the same room with him. The drill participants were gathering every detail they could about the scenario, and there I was – a journalist who makes his living by observing and reporting – unable to provide a detailed description of two people I spent more than two hours with. Bloomington Police Chief Jeff Potts noted after the drill that some people, have a sharp visual memory, yet others, including police officers, don’t. In the middle of a hostage situation you have no idea what’s happening around you, or how many people are involved in your rescue. I still had no idea until after the drill was over, when I found myself in a debriefing room with more than 60 police, fire and paramedic professionals. Although practice makes perfect, no two emergency scenarios are the same, and all the training in the world won’t prepare public safety personnel for every last detail they’ll encounter in a real life hostage crisis. That’s why there will be another training drill some day. Here’s hoping I make the next casting call.

govern this great city we live in and congratulate them on their victory. Alongside present council members Karen Nordstrom, Steve Peterson and Tom Hulting they form a strong unit well suited to representing our city. Please join me in giving them our thanks and support for serving – alongside the many others who serve on various commissions, boards and in other capacities – including the Bloomington School Board and their newly elected members. Again my sincere thanks to all the residents of Bloomington whom I look forward to working with and serving in the future. Mike Lehmann Bloomington

To the editor: I wish to extend my heartfelt thanks to the many Bloomington residents who supported me in my unsuccessful race for the at-large seat on the Bloomington City Council. The sheer number of people who assisted on the campaign was amazing. I met a lot of residents who gave me nothing but encouragement and support. I had many volunteers assisting with literature distribution, block walking, mailings, sign placement, phone calling, financial contributions and in many other ways. My campaign manager, Connie Schmidt, and her husband Marc put in untold hours and worked tirelessly on my behalf. They are to be publicly thanked for their leadership and counsel. While I totally underestimated the time, energy and resources even a local race demands it was a great experience and well worth the effort. I wish those elected, Mayor Gene Winsted and council members Tim Busse, Jack Baloga and Vern Wilcox, nothing but success as they help

Letters FROM PREVIOUS PAGE mention here. I thank all the citizens who cast a vote in my favor. The process of learning about our city, its citizens, its issues and its possibilities has been time well spent. I could not ignore the pressure I felt from the economic conditions I discovered in Bloomington. Therefore I ran for mayor to give back to the community. I did the same thing for my children and others when working to

improve our schools years ago. The end result of both efforts has been an understanding of community I would have never acquired otherwise. My hope is the community is a better place because of those efforts. I am a very private person. I take care of my family and a close circle of friends. This circle has grown immensely and I will continue to work for the improvement of this community. My personal efforts will continue to attempt to make Bloomington a better city for all its citizens and businesses. Hans Anderson Bloomington

The last suspect in a string of credit and debit card thefts has been arrested by Bloomington police. A 23-year-old Minneapolis woman was arrested Nov. 15 after voluntarily turning herself in to Bloomington police, according to Bloomington Detective Carolyn MacAskill. Through criminal records and surveillance video MacAskill was able to identify the woman as one of the women accused of using stolen credit and debit cards to make purchases at a Target store. Upon determining the probable identification of the unknown suspect in surveillance video, MacAskill reached the woman by phone and provided information connecting her to the thefts, prompting the woman to voluntarily turn herself in, MacAskill explained. The suspect is one of five arrested in a string of purse and wallet thefts from bars and restaurants throughout the

Twin Cities. Previous arrests connected to the investigation include a 33-year-old Minneapolis woman, arrested Nov. 8 following a traffic stop in Fridley; a 31year-old Minneapolis woman arrested on unrelated charges by Robbinsdale police Oct. 24; and a 25-year-old Minneapolis woman and a 33-year-old Brooklyn Center man, arrested Sept. 21. In August Bloomington police received reports of a wallet and purse theft from Cowboy Jack’s restaurant. Credit and debit cards of the victims were used for purchases at Target, Kohl’s, Super America and Walgreens stores in Bloomington, Richfield and Shakopee. Surveillance video helped police determine the identification of the 25year-old Minneapolis woman, who had been arrested in Bloomington in June. Additional investigation determined the identities of the additional suspects, according to MacAskill.

Police FROM PAGE 16A Commander Dave Olmstead. The building manager found an apartment door that appeared to have been broken into and notified a maintenance employee. The duo called police after determining the broken door was the result of a probable burglary. Police questioned an apartment resident about the burglary because of his known confrontations with the apartment’s occupant. A witness also identified the suspect as having exited the burglarized apartment, Olmstead noted. The man was arrested for suspicion of burglary and an outstanding warrant, Olmstead said.

Stolen earrings A 39-year-old housekeeping employee was arrested Nov. 10 in connection with stolen earrings. The Bloomington woman was an employee of La Quinta Inn, 7815 Nicollet Ave. The victim, a 54-year-old Minneapolis woman, had checked out of the hotel Oct. 8 and forgot to take her purse with her when she left the room, according to Olmstead. When she realized her purse was missing, she returned to the hotel, which had been

the men was carrying the GPS receiver that was later identified as being the unit from the bait car, Olmstead noted. The man attempted to dispose of the receiver by throwing it underneath the squad car, but the officer had already observed it in his hands, Olmstead added.

Woman robs Wells Fargo bank Nov. 18 A woman with a note demanding cash robbed a Bloomington bank last week. The robbery at Wells Fargo, 9801 Normandale Blvd., occurred at approximately 1:45 p.m. Friday, Nov. 18, according to the FBI’s Minneapolis Field Office. The woman was wearing a green camouflage jacket and pants, a green turned in at the front desk. The purse, however, was missing earrings the victim valued at $1,500, Olmstead said. The housekeeper and the front desk employee both denied taking the earrings from the purse, but a police investigator determined that the earrings had been pawned in Richfield by the Bloomington housekeeper on Oct. 14, Olmstead explained. When questioned about the incident again on Nov. 10 the woman said she had taken the earrings and pawned them because she needed money to pay a bill, Olmstead added. The woman faces a possible gross misdemeanor charge as appraisals for the earrings valued them at $700, Olmstead noted.

Confrontational theft

Attempted theft A 22-year-old Bloomington man didn’t take the bait, but he took a GPS receiver from a bait vehicle parked in Bloomington and was arrested for possession of stolen property. The man was arrested shortly after 2 a.m. Nov. 14. Police had parked a bait vehicle – used to catch car thieves – at Country Inn & Suites, 2221 Killebrew Drive. Inside the vehicle was a GPS receiver. When the suspect and another man entered the vehicle, the vehicle automatically alerted police of the suspicious activity, Olmstead explained. An officer responding to the scene found two men walking along Killebrew Drive and stopped to question them. One of

A 42-year-old Minneapolis woman was arrested after allegedly punching a store employee before leaving with stolen cell phones. The woman was arrested Nov. 11, accused of cutting two prepaid cell phones out of their packaging for a store display at Family Dollar, 7837 Portland Ave. S., Olmstead said. An employee confronted the woman as she was attempting to leave the store. The woman punched the employee with closed fists and exited the store. She began walking northbound on Portland Avenue and then got into a cab, store employees told police. Police were able to stop the cab and arrest the woman, who was found to be in possession of two cell phones and scissors, Olmstead said.

Heritage of Edina is proud to present its 5-star senior/assisted living community.

50 Years of Service 800 Years of Experience Heritage of Edina is proud of it’s 50 year history of taking care of the Elderly. Not only is there an unmatched blend of historic elegance in all of the antique (very user friendly) furnishings but the exceptional staff that has stayed with Heritage of Edina for many years and represents many different backgrounds. Just as the Residents make this their home, so have the staff found a home for their chosen career. Eighty-six employees have worked here for over 5 years for a combined total of 800 years of experience. A young man that has worked at Heritage of Edina for 20 years has said that with all of his family in another country, he loves coming to work because all of the Residents are like family and makes him feel at home. He also enjoys working with his co-workers who make him feel the same way. One thing that really stands out at Heritage of Edina is that every department has a specific uniform that they wear to insure professionalism, neatness and cleanliness. This is also a safety factor for the Residents, so that even if they cannot read the name tag, they know that particular person is a staff member and what department they represent. One

example is that all nurses are in white, which is something the elderly can relate to and have learned to trust. Some of the employees drive 80 to 100 miles every day round trip to work, and have been doing it for 20 to 30 years. The dedication they have to keep the buildings in good condition and the business office running smoothly is so that the Residents have a wonderful place to live. The nurses who have been here for 15 to 25 years love caring for the Residents and making sure they are all okay. In every department we have directors that have worked here for over 10 years, so they know and understand the Heritage of Edina Creed that was written by Wayne Field, Founder, and the philosophy of “Reverence for Life”. We have received so many letters of “Thanks” from families throughout these many years, complimenting the staff on the good care their loved one was given during the time they spent with us. This is what keeps us all working harder to make the lives of our Residents as happy as possible when they are here.

It’s a Fare for All Organization helps provide low-cost groceries to ease tight budgets BY PAUL GROESSEL – SUN NEWSPAPERS Every month, anyone on a tight budget can get enough low-priced groceries to make hearty meals, even during the holidays – a $30 Thanksgiving dinner suitable for a family, to be specific. That’s what Fare for All, an Emergency Foodshelf Network program, provides to hundreds of families throughout the Twin Cities Metro area. The co-operative, nonprofit food shelf is able to sell the food packages at a 40 percent lower price than grocery stores, and people may purchase as many as they’d like, said Fare for All program director Sophia Lenarz-Coy. Once a month, a truck delivers a variety of low-priced food packages to a specific participating site, where volunteers are ready to offload those packages and sell them to whomever is interested. No pre-ordering, pre-qualifications or income requirements are needed to purchase, Lenarz-Coy said. It’s like a mobile storefront. During Eden Prairie’s November opening, 89 families took advantage of the November sale, and there are 19 other sites in the metro that receive a special

delivery from the food shelf network, including New Hope, St. Louis Park, Richfield and Fridley. In November there were 91 households served in St. Louis Park and another 118 in Fridley. “So, we’ve just really seen a lot of people interested in saving money,” LenarzCoy said. Richfield scheduled its drop-off day for Nov. 22, and the emergency food shelf ’s headquarters in New Hope also offers food packages. The packages usually contain a mix of fruits and vegetables and a variety of meats. There are also vegetarian packs and other variations. In November, a Thanksgiving-oriented food pack was thrown into the mix, comprised of a 10-12 pound turkey, pumpkin pie and all the fixings for a holiday meal. In Eden Prairie, the service has come to town in collaboration with People Reaching Out to Other People, and when the delivery truck shows up each month, employees from Eaton Corporation volunteer to sell the packages at Eden Prairie United Methodist Church, 15050 Scenic Heights Road. Harnack said she encourages everyone to take advantage of the deal, not just those who seek PROP assistance. “More people could certainly benefit from this,” Harnack said. The December Eden Prairie drop-off is scheduled Dec. 6 at the United Methodist Church, Harnack said. These express sites are different from the Emergency Foodshelf Network’s other sites in Minnesota (more than 70) where people must pre-order their meal

packs. Lenarz-Coy said the express service came about because those on a tight budget can find it hard to spend money on food they will not receive until later. And, it was hard to know what they would want. The express service was intended to take those hassles away, she said.

New program seeks roofs for homeless youth Aims to steer older suburban youth in the right direction BY ANDREW WIG – SUN NEWSPAPERS Homelessness is not confined to the big city, but that is where most of the help is. A new program aims to bridge that

gap by putting roofs over the heads of older, suburban homeless youth. It is called the Suburban Host Home Program, which has been holding meetings in recent months throughout the metro area, looking for families to take in those who are straddling childhood and adulthood, but have no reliable place to stay at night. “There are no homeless shelters in the suburbs,” noted Nan Corliss, a volunteer for Bloomington-based Oasis

for Youth, a resource center for homeless young people. Oasis is one of four organizations instituting the Suburban Host Home Program. More informational sessions are scheduled for Nov. 29 at the St. Louis Park Library, followed by another such meeting Dec. 6 at Hope Presbyterian Church in Richfield at 6 p.m. Dave and Kimpa Moss of Eden Prairie attended one of these sessions, and soon may be part of the first match of the Suburban Host Home Program, which was started in May. Their prospective match is an 18-yearold who has been through foster care in multiple locations in the Twin Cities. “We have all these resources that could help youth that are not sure where they’re going to live, or what they’re going to eat,” said Kimpa Moss, who has raised four children with her husband. Three of them are out of the house, but remaining is a Russian boy they adopted eight years ago. “My husband and I have a very strong heart for youth,” the mother said. The Mosses fit the profile of the

kind of family that takes interest in serving as a host home. “I think it’s generally people who care about kids,” said Andrea Knoll, volunteer coordinator at Oasis for Youth. Many potential host families have already filled the role informally. Perhaps “their son or daughter brought home a friend who needed a place to stay.” Knoll said. Some of them are just emptynesters who suddenly find themselves with no one to care for, she added. Whatever their motivation, those who serve as host families will be fulfilling a dire need during a critical point in a young person’s life, advocates say. So often when a youth exits foster care, “they come out without skills, and no money to learn those skills,” Corliss said. “And in an economic climate like we are in today, those are the kind of youth where it is impossible to find employment.” This is the path that leads to life in the streets, Oasis volunteers said. “If HOMELESS: TO PAGE 26A

Homeless FROM PAGE 24A you can catch the youth, keep them in school, help them from ending up on the street where any number of things can happen … you have a chance to put them in a different direction than a lifetime of homelessness,” Knoll said. Host families and youth undergo screening processes to ensure a positive match. Both write biographies that are included in a catalogue they

can leaf through. The youth, who must be 18 to enter the program, make the final decision on the pairings. Host families are not compensated for the arrangement, and are asked to commit to providing food and shelter for 18 months. Kimpa Moss knows her family is not the only one with the resources necessary to become a host family. “I challenge other families to do this,” she said. “I know they have kids that have gone off to college. I know they have big bedrooms that are empty. Help these kids out.”

Works FROM PAGE 1A called the Edina Community Center home, but its space within the community center, and access to the space, were limited. As engineering education has grown in Minnesota schools, The Works needed more space to accommodate the demands for its programs, leading the organization to an empty office building near 98th Street and Lyndale Avenue South. The Works opened in its new location earlier this month. The first traveling exhibit is “Toys: the inside story,” showing the mechanical processes inside popular childhood toys such as Etch A Sketch and childhood games such as Hungry Hungry Hippos, Measells explained. Traveling exhibits that focus upon engineering are hard to come by, Measells said. Being able to obtain the inside toys exhibit as the first traveling exhibit in

Bloomington was fortuitous. “It was a really great fit,” she said. Traveling exhibits will change every three to six months, and the inside toys exhibit will be available until May, she noted. Along with the move from 7,000 What: The Works square feet in Where: 9740 Grand Edina to 45,000 Ave. S., Bloomington square feet in Hours: 10 a.m. to 8 Bloomington, the p.m. Thursdays and organization has Fridays, 10 a.m. to 5 grown, too. p.m. Saturday Measells became through Monday CEO in October, Info: theworks.org having previously worked as the vice president of education and exhibits at Minnesota Children’s Museum in St. Paul. As CEO, Measells is responsible for growing the organization in the years to come. In the past year there have been

21,000 children who have visited The Works through an organized group. The goal is to increase that total by 20 percent during its first year in Bloomington, she explained. Measells may be taking over the leadership and oversight of the museum, but Schatz will continue with the organization she founded, focusing upon exhibit design and innovation, Measells said. To finance the expansion, The Works is conducting a multi-year capital campaign. The organization is funded by contributions from corporations, foundations and individuals as well as revenue from memberships, admissions, and workshop fees. There is a daily admission fee of $6 per person for the museum, as well as a $2 fee for the Design Lab. Annual memberships are available and throughout the year The Works offers special events and activities, such as Tech Fest, a family-oriented event at the end of February to celebrate National Engineers Week. Tech Fest features special demonstrations, showcases student work and provides engineering projects designed for families.

Right Way Painting Solutions After one of the most brutal winters we have encountered in the past 30 years, we have all found things that need repair or replacement on our homes. Many of us have needed to put off work being done to our homes do to economic hard times. Many of us also put off projects to save money in case things got worse. Our home values have gone down which makes it hard to even think about selling our homes. The reality is that we have to keep our property in good shape to maintain our values. Painting the exterior of our homes is by far the best value to preserving our wood surfaces and windows. We can also dramatically change the appearance of the inside of our homes by updating colors. Painting woodwork is a very affordable option compared to replacing old trim around our homes. In many older homes our windows are still good, but the old stain and varnish are not holding up any more. You can save thousands of dollars by painting these windows verses replacing windows. Updating your

basement family room can also be as easy as painting the paneling. I’m Paul Moore from Rightway Painting Solutions. I’ve been in the painting business for over 20 years. Being a former Shop Teacher, I have a good background in finishing and wood replacement. We do both residential and commercial painting. We do work for several Town Home Associations, Nursing Homes and Residential Properties. We give our customers great value by being able to not just paint. We replace or repair wood, repair and reglaze older windows and reside areas that need replacement. We also repair decks and re stain decks. On the inside we repair walls, remove wallpaper, enamel wood work and paint paneling. We offer a 2 year labor warrantee on our labor, provide references and we would be happy to give you a free estimate. For all of your painting needs give us a call at 612-8392239.

Bloomington Jefferson point guard Britney Scherber dribbles past an Edina defender during girls basketball action last season. The allconference player will serve as Jefferson’s senior co-captain this season. Alie Brechlin is Jefferson’s other co-captain.

Girls BB heats up All five Lake Conference girls basketball teams will play South Suburban Conference opponents at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 29. The schedule for the evening includes Jefferson at Hopkins, Kennedy at Wayzata, Prior Lake at Minnetonka, Rosemount at Edina and Eagan at Eden Prairie. Hopkins, the defending Class 4A champion, is the Lake Conference favorite with sisters Nia and Sydney Coffey leading the way. Kennedy, coached by Percy Wade, is loaded with talent led by 5-foot-9 guard/forward Kenisha Bell, who has committed to the University of Minnesota. She helped the North Tartan 14-and-under team win a national AAU title last summer. Eagle sophomore Tonia Wade, a guard/forward, was also a member of that North Tartan squad. Jefferson returns four outstanding players from last year’s team. Those returnees are senior point guard Britney Scherber, senior forward Alie Brechlin, senior guard Ellen Kokes and junior guard Brooke Fritzlar.

Boys puck season nears Kennedy’s boys hockey team, coached by Dave Dillon, will travel to Northfield for a 7:30 p.m. non-conference game Tuesday, Nov. 29. The Eagles are playing a modified schedule this season that consists of nine South Suburban Conference games and the remainder of the schedule against non-conference foes. Jefferson, coached by Jeff Lindquist, faces defending state Class AA champion Eden Prairie in its opener at 7 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 1, at Eden Prairie Community Center. The Jaguars return home to the Bloomington Ice Garden for a 7:15 p.m. game against Centennial Thursday, Dec. 8. – Compiled by Greg Kleven

MARK YOUR CALENDAR Bloomington Jefferson’s girls basketball squad will travel to defending state Class 4A champion Hopkins at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 29.

Jordan Taylor The Bloomington resident is beginning his fourth season as the University of Wisconsin basketball team’s starting point guard. The 6foot-1, 195-pound Taylor has been selected to several college pre-season All-American teams. The Benilde-St. Margaret’s graduate averaged 18.1 points and 4.7 assists per game as a junior.

Jefferson shoots for another 20-win girls basketball season BY GREG KLEVEN – SUN NEWSPAPERS Bloomington Jefferson’s 2011-12 girls basketball team has quite an act to follow. The Jaguars were 20-8 a year ago and finished third in the South Suburban Conference. Jefferson reached the section semifinals before losing to Edina. Jefferson’s prospects for another 20-win season appear to be bright with 13 returning letter-winners out for the team. Jaguar coach Andy Meinhardt will face tough decisions trying to pick his top varsity rotation. Britney Scherber heads the list of talented returnees. The 5-foot-9 senior point guard averaged 16 points per game as a junior and earned all-conference honors. Scherber, a four-year letter-winner, will play Division I basketball at Bradley University next season. “Britney has a quick first step and a high basketball IQ,” said Meinhardt. “She

has been our leading scorer for the past three seasons and might finish as our school’s leading all-time scorer.” Scherber is a Jaguar co-captain along with 5-10 senior forward Alie Brechlin. Meinhardt lists 5-9 senior guard Ellen Kokes and 5-10 junior guard Brooke Fritzlar as two other key returnees. “Kokes is one of the best defenders in the state,” said Meinhardt. “We are looking for Fritzlar to be one of our main scorers. “We will be looking at a number of other varsity prospects.” Jefferson will play defending state Class 4A champion Hopkins at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 29, at Lindbergh Center. “We will rely on more of a full-court game this season and take advantage of our depth,” said Meinhardt. “We are deep and athletic. “We should be a good shooting team from the perimeter as well.”

The Bloomington native is one of the top defensemen for the Colorado Avalanche. Johnson has nine assists in 20 games for the Avalanche. He was the first overall pick by St. Louis in the 2006 NHL entry draft before eventually being traded to Colorado.

Christina Nelson Nelson, a ninth-grader, made 42 saves in goal during the Kennedy girls hockey team’s 2-2 tie with Holy Family Catholic at Waconia Ice Arena Nov. 19. Kennedy has a 12-1 record.

Kelsey Cline The Jefferson junior defender and captain scored two goals as the Jaguars defeated New Prague 7-1 in girls hockey action last week.

Amanda Dusing The Kennedy senior forward had one goal and two assists as the Eagles defeated non-conference girls hockey opponent Tartan Nov. 12.

South Suburban teams shine in state adapted soccer tourney Flyers win PI Division consolation title BY GREG KLEVEN – SUN NEWSPAPERS South Suburban Flyers completed a successful season by winning the consolation championship in the PI (Physically Impaired) Division at the state adapted soccer tournament Nov. 18-19 at Stillwater High School. The Flyers, composed of players from Richfield, Bloomington, Edina and Eden Prairie, defeated Mounds View/Irondale/Roseville 8-3 in the consolation finals. South Suburban finished with a 9-1-1 record. Senior Karen Kreidler of Richfield scored three goals in the consolation championship game, as did Dequan Williams. Andrew Mortinson contributed two goals. Goalkeeper Nick Nieson made 13 saves. South Suburban opened the tournament with a 2-1 quarterfinal loss to Anoka-Hennepin. Kreidler scored the Flyers’ lone goal. Kreidler scored 23 points during the regular season. South Suburban averaged 8.1 goals per game heading into state competition. South Suburban beat St. Paul Humboldt 9-1 in the consolation semifinals Nov. 19 as Kreidler came through with five goals. Williams provided two goals against Humboldt. Dan Schmitz and Alexei Dickinson had one goal each. Flyers goalkeepers Nieson and Jake Yancey had a combined 14 saves.

Impaired) Division of the state tournament, and the Jets reached the consolation finals. The Jets lost 12-4 to St. Cloud Area in the state quarterfinals. Rory Gaston scored all four South Suburban goals. South Suburban goalkeeper Sam Cashin made 26 saves. South Suburban Jets rebounded from that loss with 7-5 victory over Chaska/Chanhassen/Prior

Lake/Shakopee in the consolation semifinals. Gaston came through with four goals. Zachary Minn had two goals and Mark Moren scored once. Cashin was credited with 27 saves. Dakota United defeated the Jets 124 in the consolation finals. Gaston scored three goals and Minn added one. Cashin finished with 21 saves. South Suburban concluded its season with a 6-6-1 record.

Kennedy diver Jeans places 18th in state meet Bloomington Kennedy junior Kelly Jeans was the city’s lone representative in the state Class AA girls swimming and diving meet Nov. 17-19 at the University of Minnesota Aquatic Center. Jeans advanced to state competition by winning the Section 2AA title with 337.60 points in 11 dives. The Eagle diving standout was 18th

at state with a total of 228.40 points during preliminary and semifinal rounds. She just missed qualifying for the finals. Edina was the Class AA team champion with 316 points. Minnetonka placed second (188) and Stillwater finished third (171). Eden Prairie was fourth (165) and Rochester John Marshall came in fifth (141). Kennedy head coach Todd Walsh was

impressed by Jeans’ work ethic this season. “Kelly put in the time during the offseason needed to improve this year and hold off the surge of other improving divers in the section,” said the Eagle coach after Section 2AA competition. “Kelly emerged this year as a dominant diver.” – Compiled by Greg Kleven

Happy to be back covering local sports scene GREG KLEVEN Bloomington Sports Editor

This sportswriter is glad to be back in action after being sidelined by hip replacement surgery and rehabilitation for the past five weeks. I would like to thank all my friends, coaching acquaintances, readers and coworkers for their well wishes and support during my medical leave. The Sun sports staff of John Sherman, Mike Shaughnessy and Nick Clark deserves thanks for filling in so well for me during my absence. And special thanks goes to Dave Pedersen for his contributions while I was away. And photographer Brian Nelson is to be commended for supplying top-notch sports photos for the Eden Prairie, Richfield, Bloomington and St. Louis Park sections. I did my rehab at Bloomington Masonic Home and discovered that many of the facility’s personnel and patients are longtime readers of Sun Newspapers. Bloomington resident Rod Lingenfelter was also at the Bloomington Masonic Home during my stay while rehabbing after knee surgery. It was fun to reminisce with Lingenfelter and visit with his sons Steve and Jim, who starred in basketball at Jefferson. I reminded Steve, a 6-foot-8 center, about the way he outplayed Kevin McHale of Hibbing in the state championship game in 1976. The Jaguars defeated Hibbing 60-51 in the title game. McHale went on to star at the University of Minnesota and then earn hall of fame honors as a member of the Boston Celtics. Steve Lingenfelter played collegiately at Minnesota and South Dakota State before playing pro ball in the NBA and Europe.

Local athletes excel I tried staying up to date with the local sports scene during my medical leave and had plenty of time to peruse newspapers and watch area athletes in televised action. KLEVEN: TO NEXT PAGE

Kleven FROM PREVIOUS PAGE Richfield’s Trevor Olson and his Northern Illinois football team has appeared often on ESPN. The former Spartan lineman starts at offensive tackle for the Huskies and the senior is considered a potential high pick in the NFL draft next spring. One of the major reasons for the Gopher men’s hockey team success this winter is the play of freshman forward

Kyle Rau of Eden Prairie. Rau led the Eagles to the state Class AA championship last winter and has been a key scorer for the No. 1-ranked Gophers this season. Bloomington’s Jordan Taylor is completing his senior season as the starting point guard at the University of Wisconsin. Taylor received all-conference and All-American honors as a junior last season and should earn more awards during his final collegiate season.

of Eden Prairie High School teams. The Eagles’ volleyball team, ranked sixth for much of the season, won the state Class 3A title with a hard-fought fiveset victory over Lakeville North in the finals Nov. 12 at Excel Energy Center. Eden Prairie was the fourth seed in the tournament but defeated No. 1 Blaine and Hutchinson before topping Lakeville North in the title match. Head coach Chad Becker did a great job molding his team into a championship squad. The Eagles finished 27-6 and may be better next season with several of their top players returning.

Eden Prairie’s football program should be saluted for returning to the Prep Bowl. The Eagles are 11-1 and will face unbeaten Wayzata in the Class 5A championship game Friday, Nov. 25, at the Metrodome. Eden Prairie lost 9-0 to the Trojans during the regular season. Head coach Mike Grant and his assistants do a great job building the Eagles into an annual state title contender. Eden Prairie will seek its seventh state football title against Wayzata. Look for the Eagles to pull out a 20-17 victory over the Trojans and achieve another state championship.

By: Ali Holman, co-owner of www.coreconditioningtraining.com I think we can all agree that eating is fun. Not only is it a way for us to socialize, reward ourselves and comfort ourselves, it also is the one area of fitness where people have the most trouble. Wouldn’t it be great to know that the choices you make are actually helping your fitness program? More importantly, wouldn’t it be even better to banish the word “diet” from your vocabulary? Chances are, if you are embarking on a “diet”, it will have a beginning and an end. The end is usually followed by slowly going back to old habits and ends you right back where you started. With our clients, we really encourage them to focus on a Lifestyle Change with room for “cheat meals” and realistic goals; which inevitably lead to lifelong results and without the emotional roller coaster of a diet.

Eggs are high in protein and low in calories. You may have heard all the warnings about eggs and your health: opt for eggwhites for the low-cholesterol, fatburning effect. Eggs also contain the vitamin B-12, a great supplement for breaking down fat cells.

Studies show that women who eat low-fat dairy products (such as non-fat yogurt and low-fat milk) three to four times a day lost 70 percent more fat than low-dairy dieters.

beans

oatmeal

Beans are one of the best sources of protein, fiber and iron. Some of the best beans to ear are: • Navy Beans • White Beans • Kidney Beans • Lima Beans

Oatmeal is loaded with soluble fiber, which helps reduce blood cholesterol by flushing those bad digestive acids out of your system. Skip the flavored oatmeals - you lose out on all the health benefits. If you must sweeten your oatmeal, do so by adding fruit.

olive oil

lean meats

Certain fats are good for you, and your body needs them. Olive oil is one of those “good fats.” It helps you burn fat and keeps your cholesterol down. One ounce of extra virgin olive oil contains about 85% of the daily value for monosaturated fat.

Search for lean meats - chicken (baked, broiled, grilled), fish and turkey - which are all high in protein. It is a good rule of thumb to consume at least one half-gram protein per pound of body weight each day. A chicken breast gets you well on your way, with about 22 grams of protein.

whole grains

interval training

Our body needs carbohydrates, despite what the fad diets tell you. Avoid processed carbohydrates such as white breads, bagles, pastas and white rice and look for whole grains that have not been processed and contain the fiber and minerals your body needs.

Interval training is defined as short, repeated bouts of intense exercise with minimal rest. You can burn major calories and get an all-over workout in less than 30 minutes. When you see people who are “cut,” chances ar they are partaking in interval training.

Cremation Society of Minnesota REGISTRATION FORM

Name _____________________________________________________________________ Address____________________________________________________________________

The Cremation Society of Minnesota is Minnesota’s largest provider of cremation services. Society members come from all social, religious, and economic backgrounds, finding unity in their mutual attraction of the simplicity of the cremation rite. They choose to dispense with costly and unnecessary pomp associated with conventional funerals, and commit themselves and their families to this dignified disposition at the time of death.

Q. How does the Cremation Society of Minnesota Work? A. The Cremation Society is notified immediately at the time of death. Then the member’s body is transported to the Society’s crematory where it is held until proper medical authorization is secured. The cremation permit is then completed, and the body is cremated.

Our membership plan allows families to make all arrangements in advance, thereby relieving survivors of the need to make urgent decisions while in the state of grief. Preplanning provides families with complete peace of mind, both emotionally and financially.

Q. What happens to the ashes after cremation? A. Your cremated remains (ashes) will be handled according to your written instructions. They may be picked up by your survivors, or will be delivered or mailed for a fee.

Q. At the time of death, what is the cost for the cremation service? A. The cost of the basic cremation service which includes removal of the body from the place of death, cremation, filing of the necessary papers and cardboard container suitable for burial is presently $1395.00 for members. This is payable at the time services are rendered. The charge to non-members, whom we also service, is more.

At the time of death, our counselors are available to assist your survivors in arranging for memorial services, obtaining certified copies of the death certificate, cemetery services, grave makers and monuments, obituaries for the newspaper and paperwork for Social Security and Veterans’ benefits.
