Body recovered from Bloomington pond
Stolen vehicle A 22-year-old Detroit woman was arrested in connection with a stolen vehicle from St. Paul. The woman, arrested Oct. 20, was seen driving the vehicle in the parking lot of Northwood Inn and Suites, 1225 E. 78th St., about 90 minutes after the stolen vehicle had been identified in the parking lot, according to Stehlik. A patrol officer had been checking vehicles in the parking lot shortly after 8 p.m. and identified the stolen vehicle through a license plate check. An undercover officer began surveillance of the vehicle about an hour after the vehicle was identified. The suspect entered the vehicle about 30 minutes later and was quickly stopped by police without incident, Stehlik said. The suspect and a 40-year-old man with no know address were taken into custody. Inside the vehicle police found several checks in several names, gift cards, a Minnesota driver’s license and a laptop computer, Stehlik noted.

A 43-year-old Eagan woman was arrested on suspicion of forgery after attempting to cash stolen checks in Bloomington. The woman was arrested Oct. 22 at Super Cash, 7854 Portland Ave. S., after attempting to cash two checks, including one for $2,750. The check for $2,750 appeared to be fraudulent, the clerk determined. During verification phone calls to authenticate the check the clerk learned that checks from the account in question had been stolen and attempts to pass them had been made across the country, Stehlik said.

A 27-year-old Bloomington man was arrested on suspicion of stealing a construction trailer during the early morning hours of Oct. 25. The trailer was stolen from a driveway on the 6800 block of West 83rd Street at approximately 3:40 a.m. after the homeowner heard noise outside his house and looked out a window to see a vehicle pulling the trailer away. It had been parked in the driveway by a contractor who was working on the house. The trailer and its contents were valued at more than $60,000, Stehlik said. The trailer was found parked outside the suspect’s home on the 8100 block of Kentucky Avenue. The man claimed that he had loaned his vehicle to friends who were at his house and that they returned with the trailer. The man said his friends left the residence on foot before police arrived. Tools from the trailer were found near the garage of the residence, Stehlik noted. The incident remains under investigation.
he struck a vehicle at an intersection in Bloomington. Police, however, realized he had been driving while impaired and arrested him on suspicion of seconddegree DUI. The man was arrested following a report of a hit-and-run at the intersection of 98th Street and Grand Avenue at 6:22 p.m. Oct. 22, Stehlik said. The suspect struck another vehicle that was stopped at the intersection, damaging a rear quarter panel of the vehicle. When the light at the intersection turned green, the suspect drove around the vehicle and headed toward his Bloomington home, on the 10100 block of Emerson Avenue. The vehicle the suspect struck followed the man to his residence, where police arrived to question him. The man was barely able to stand up and had trouble removing his driver’s license from his wallet and maintaining his balance, Stehlik said. The man’s blood alcohol concentration

Sure, don’t vote, and see if I care (I do) It’s your right not to vote. No, really, it is. It’s foolish, but you’re well within your rights to stay home on Nov. 8 and not participate in the processes that have a distinct effect on your life. No one’s going to show up at your door and haul you off for avoiding the polls. Everyone knows voting is a pretty darn good thing to do, but apparently that’s not enough to get the unmotivated moving, so here’s hoping this column nudges you off the couch and into the voting box. Break it down however you want – as a nation, state, county or city, we are governed by individuals who are placed into positions of power by a voting process. Without this process, we’d be no better than a lawless
DANIEL CALLAHAN Sun-Current Managing Editor
mob. We rely on that process to ensure we have leadership divined by the people to be the best we can come up with. And, if they’re not the best, at least the people choose our own elected officials. In my mind, they should be chosen by all the people. At least those who can vote. According to George Mason University’s United States Elections Project, about 2,123,369 Minnesotans voted in the 2010 general elections. The project also states that 3,799,328
Minnesotans were considered eligible to vote that year. Simple math will show that 1,675,959 legally eligible voters decided it wasn’t worth the time. There are those who do not care about the outcomes of elections. Those who feel the process has gone awry or honestly just don’t care about the quality of our roads, the education our nation’s – or more specifically, this city’s – children are getting, or the direction in which our tax dollars are being spent. So if that’s your goal, stay home. Turn on the TV, spend an hour or two with the “real” housewives of who-really-cares and check out of active society. It really doesn’t matter. To you anyway. Apparently 44 percent of Minnesotans don’t care, so at
least you won’t be alone in your apathy. But please, please, please don’t think you can only choose to participate when you feel like it and still be taken seriously. If you choose not to educate yourself on the issues, not to get to know the candidates and ultimately not to vote, please don’t sit back in your Laz-E-Boy and complain about how things are going. Again, it’s your right not to vote. And, thanks to the First Amendment – personally, my favorite amendment – it’s your right to grumble and mumble about the sad state of affairs when you couldn’t take the time to exercise your constitutionally protected freedoms. But I don’t want to hear it.
This past summer I filed for school board candidacy because I knew that the best way to give back was through serving and working hard with other people in my community. I want to make sure that as a proud citizen of this country I help to preserve and continue to develop the great quality of life we enjoy in Bloomington. Bloomington is the city where my husband’s family chose to live and where he grew up. We also chose Bloomington for our own family. I am very proud to have joined this welcoming community and to have three children attending Bloomington Public Schools where they are provided with an excellent education. It is my wish to help maintain that excellence. If elected, I will be fiscally responsible and I will work with students, parents, teachers, legislators and all residents to encourage the passion for high-quality educa-
tion. I will listen to community members of all ages, because I value everybody’s experience and knowledge. I am here to listen, to research, to work and to give back to this wonderful community. Please continue to contact me with any questions or comments at kormanforourschools.com I hope to earn your vote on Nov. 8. Nelly Korman Bloomington
LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Busse’s experience earns Grady’s nod To the editor: In December I will end my service on the Bloomington City Council. I am honored to have served the people of Bloomington these eight years. I plan to pass the baton to Councilmember Tim Busse who at my urging is running for my at-large council seat. Tim has the experience, brains, work ethic and common sense it takes to be a great council member. My dad was a city council member in the early 1970s and he and I were privileged to be part of a long history of Bloomington city council members and mayors who cared a great deal about our city and made decisions that were not motivated by ego or political party affiliation. This tradition
of good government elected officials is the reason Bloomington is a great city today. As a result, the partisan impasse that infects state and federal politics does not exist on the Bloomington City Council. Busse will carry on that tradition of caring, thoughtful, dedicated public service. Please vote. In the last election, a very competent council member lost by 12 votes. Vote for Tim Busse on Nov. 8 and ensure that the tradition of good government continues in Bloomington. Amy Grady Bloomington

Baloga proved to be a thoughtful leader To the editor: While serving on the Bloomington Planning Commission for the past five years with Jack Baloga, I developed an appreciation for Jack’s love of our city. As chair of the Planning Commission last year, Jack proved to be a thoughtful leader. Jack believed that our role as commissioners was to make recommendations to the city council that were in the long-term best interests of all of our city residents. While Jack displayed a genuine respect for our city staff, he did not hesitate on occasion to question staff recommendations. His common sense and fiscally conservative approach will help Bloomington grow and at the same time maintain our city’s top financial ratings. I strongly support Jack to represent all of us on the Bloomington City Council. Jim Lucas Bloomington
Bartolotta is an exceptional choice To the editor: Maureen Bartolotta is an exceptional choice for your vote onto the Bloomington School Board. I have worked closely with Maureen over the past eight years as she helped coordinate the annual senior recognition event, a banquet that recognizes graduating seniors from both high schools in the areas of the arts, volunteerism, academics and leadership.
Maureen has been an integral part of Bloomington United for Youth’s initiatives (Box City Vigil for youth homelessness, Bloomington Youth Job Fair) as long as she has been a Bloomington resident. She is one of the reasons that a 15year dream of a safe gathering spot for Bloomington teens came to fruition in the opening of Central Grounds teen center last year. Maureen continues to support this initiative by being the primary coordinator for adult volunteer attendants at Central Grounds. Maureen truly takes to heart the needs of all Bloomington students, both in her community volunteerism and in her seat on the school board. Her past representation on and leadership of the school board has always been in consideration of the students, staff and families she is a voice for. Vote with confidence in voting Nov. 8 to return Maureen Bartolotta to the Bloomington School Board. Cindy McInroy Bloomington
Winstead’s integrity and character shine To the editor: Over the several years I have known Mayor Gene Winstead, there have been numerous occasions when I have called on him to take time out of his busy schedule to help us out, there is no hesitation. His first words are, “Where and what time?” He is always willing to help out with the city’s Disability Employment Awareness Month activities as well as officiating at Human Rights Commission presentations and the annual Diversity Day celebration at Jefferson and Kennedy high schools, where he is called upon to begin the day with opening words and ribbon cutting. His leadership style on the on the city council is quite evident. He guides the council with skill and an open-minded willingness to listen to all sides of any issue. With the residents of Bloomington, he is honest and fair, his integrity and character shine. These skills and characteristics all lead to better government and an enhanced quality of life for all residents of Bloomington. I strongly urge you to re-elect Mayor Gene Winstead to another term. But through planning and good relationships, we are ahead of the curve. Every day our residents benefit from excellent relationships between our businesses, nonprofits, schools and the city. We pull together in large and small ways to make our city stronger, safer, cleaner and more welcoming. As mayor, it’s been rewarding to see the success of our focus. To the editor: By nature, I am an optimist. I believe people want to live in a city of which they can be proud. I believe they are willing to chip in to help their neighbors, care about the safety of all our kids and know that first class cities are built by people, not government. In leading our city through these challenging economic times, I report that we have fared as well as we have because of our prudent spending, planning and commitment to quality service

Sources: Domestic abuse is pervasive The most prevalent violence in our communities, says prevention advocate BY PAUL GROESSEL – SUN NEWSPAPERS If the level and amount of violence inside area homes was moved outside, to the visible street corners, “people would be up in arms,” said Bob Olson of Cornerstone, the domestic abuse prevention agency, based in Bloomington. Olson, a retired Eden Prairie police sergeant, said domestic abuse, especially in the suburbs, is the most prevalent form of violence in our communities. That message he regularly shares comes on the heels of October’s domestic violence awareness month. Olson has been working with Cornerstone since his February retirement from the Eden Prairie Police Department, where he served on the Domestic Abuse Response Team, known as DART. The unit won the Minnesota Crime Prevention Association’s Team of the Year Award in October 2010 for its services. That actively works with domestic abuse victims and potential victims to reduce violence in homes. That message is also on the heals of Viking’s defensive back Chris Cook’s felony charge for allegedly strangling his girlfriend at his Eden Prairie residence Oct. 22.

In Eden Prairie, Sgt. Dennis Paulson said, from his perspective, there are domestic calls on a regular basis. There is about an arrest once a week and a domestic call of some kind – whether verbal or physical – during every shift, it seems. It doesn’t have to be extreme to be domestic abuse, Paulson said. It could be verbal abuse, a push, a slap, a hit. To further reduce domestic violence, Eden Prairie police, as well as Edina and St. Louis Park, have implemented a lethality screening – questions that officers responding to a domestic call can ask the victim. Bloomington and Richfield, the other two cities Cornerstone serves, plan on implementing it, Olson said. Cornerstone hired Olson under a federal grant to coordinate prevention and awareness efforts among the five cities Cornerstone serves, the police departments and judicial system. Paulson, now leading Eden Prairie’s DART, said the lethality screening is meant to measure how much of a real or potential danger someone could be in. The screenings are given when responding to all domestic abuse calls involving intimate partners who live together. The first three of the dozen yes or no questions can trigger the biggest alarms, Paulson said. They ask if a partner has ever used or threatened to use a weapon against the other, if the partner has ever threatened children and if the victim thinks if her partner is trying to kill her. They may seem like obvious questions, but the form has created a regi-

mented standard for victims, potential victims, the police department, advocates and the court system. Since Eden Prairie police officers and other departments screen someone in every domestic call, something that could otherwise be missed is accounted for, Olson and Paulson said. Olson offered an example. There was an incident where a police responded to a verbal argument at a home. After talking
with and screening the woman while the man was gone, police found out she had been in an abusive relationship for years. If the police had not gone through the screening, they wouldn’t have known. Even though it had not been reported and no criminal action could be taken for the argument, the woman was able to contact Cornerstone and is now receiving help. DOMESTICS: TO PAGE 25

In about 1074 A.D., eight years after defeating Harold II at the Battle of Hastings, King William I of England (William the Conqueror) issued a silver penny, about the size of a dime, bearing his portrait with a star on either side. In due time, English pennies became known as “stoerlings” from which the modern English currency of Sterling and the tem for fine silver is derived. Some have suggested that the use of stars on the coinage of this period might have represented celestial activity such as the appearance of Haley’s Comet in March of 1066 A.D., the year of the Conquest.
8. At least one very “high-profile” local gold buyer has been know to play games with weights. A high quote means nothing if you don’t get full credit for EVERY gram or pennyweight of gold or silver.

DUCATIONAL XCELLENCE
How to switch majors successfully
Choosing a major is often met with trepidation. College students may feel pressured to choose a major when they are less than certain about what they want to study. Majors aren’t set in stone and students have the opportunity to switch concentrations if their original choice isn’t the right fit. Perhaps now more than ever, there is pressure on students to pick the right college major. In this weak economy, experts are touting advice
on choosing a major that gives students the best chance of finding a job after graduation. The National Center for Education Statistics says that in 2007-2008, the most popular majors were business, social sciences, history, and education. According to Capital University, students usually have so many interests that they have difficulty narrowing their choices. Their first inclination is not to declare a major and wait to see if they find their niche. In general, two out of every three university students change majors at least once. This should give hope to students who feel they need a chance. Here are some tips that should help with the process. * Wait to declare. Many educators advise waiting a semester or two before declaring a major. Take a variety of elective courses and general
In the Community, With the Community, For the Community
Spotlight on Education “Imagine Your Future” education classes that will fit degree requirements regardless of major. * Take an assessment test. The career or guidance office may offer some of the standardized tools to help students find an area of concentration. * Do your research. If you’re considering a new major, talk to your advisor about what will be required of that new major, including classes and other coursework. You can also talk to students currently studying under that major. Knowing what to expect beforehand can make the decision-making process a little easier. * Talk to the dean. Many colleges and universities have deans or advisors in charge of students in certain majors. They will know the courses required for a degree. Switching majors may involve taking or re-tak-
ing some courses that will fit with the new major. It may also mean that some courses that were taken cannot be applied to the new major. This can result in having to take more classes one semester or taking an extra semester to graduate. * Consider finances. Taking different classes or stretching out your college career an additional semester might cost more money. Be sure that the finances are there, whether personally provided or funded through financial aid. * Assess whether your major truly matters. Many liberal arts or general studies majors are applicable in many fields. Therefore, switching majors may not even be necessary. Think about continuing with a current major and then concentrate or minor in something more specific.

Tengdin said she enjoys being able to share ideas with and learn from the experiences of former corporate executives, graphic designers and marketers. Tom Morehouse, a new member of PetPAC, previously worked in medical equipment sales. He opened Lucky Dog Pet Lodge, 1067 American Blvd. E., in Bloomington in August. “I got tired of the day to day routine,” said the Eden Prairie resident and owner of 2-year-old Hogan, a yellow lab. “I wanted to do something that I was more passionate about.” He spent nearly two years researching and scouting locations before landing on the 30,000-square-foot facility, which includes and 18,000-square-foot outdoor play yard. Despite the slow economy, he said he was not concerned about opening Lucky Dog. He said it’s not that people didn’t always love their dogs, but now there are more options to take care of and pamper them. Morehouse heard about PetPAC from another member Ali Jarvis, founder of SidewalkDog.com, an online hub for information about dog-friendly life in the Twin Cities. Is Water Ruining Your Chimney? The Professionals At AirBroom Minnesota In Excelsior Can Help How does your chimney look? Are the bricks crumbling? Does it have White or Black exterior staining? Are you afraid to use your fireplace because you’re not sure how safe it is? When was the last time you used it? The professionals at AirBroom Minnesota Fireplace and Air Duct Cleaning in Excelsior can restore both your confidence and your chimney. Did you know that water causes more damage to masonry chimneys than fire? Your chimney, unlike other parts of your house, is constantly exposed to the elements. They are generally constructed of brick, mortar, tile, steel, and iron. All of these materials suffer deterioration as a result of prolonged contact with water. Freeze and thaw cycles so familiar here in the Twin Cities cause stress on the chimney. Water that has penetrated expands and contracts. Left unchecked it will cause interior and exterior damage to your home and masonry chimney. Some of the damage that can be caused includes: 1) spalled and broken exterior brickwork, 2) deteriorated masonry and metal firebox assemblies, 3) rusted dampers, 4) decayed mortar, cracked or missing flue liners, and in the worst case scenario damage to adjoining walls, ceilings, and woodwork. There are three main ways to prevent water damage. 1) Install a chimney cap. This is the most inexpensive measure to prevent water penetration to the flue and inside chimney elements. We sell and install locally manufactured caps for as little as $99. 2) Repair or replace a damaged chimney crown. The crown sits atop your chimney and covers and seals it from the flue liners to the chimney edge. Many chimneys are built with an inadequate crown constructed from common mortar mix. Mortar is not designed for and will not withstand years of prolonged moisture exposure without cracking and chipping which allows water to penetrate the chimney. A proper crown is constructed of a Portland
cement mixture and formed to provide an overhang drip edge. This assures the water will shed helping to prevent erosion in the mortar and brick of the chimneys surfaces. Keeping the crown “watertight” and shedding away from the sponge like masonry elements that the chimney is built of is the most important element to preventing deterioration. At AirBroom Minnesota we use the industry leading line of Saver products to build and repair chimneys. Use of these products allows us to pass on manufacturers material warranties of up to 15 years to our clients. 3) Waterproof your masonry chimney and crown. Most masonry is porous and will absorb large amounts of water. Brick acts like a sponge absorbing water and wicking it to the chimney interior. Products we use are specifically developed for use as waterproofing agents on masonry chimneys. These are vapor permeable – which means they allow the masonry to breath out but not in. This allows water that has penetrated the chimney to escape while preventing additional water from entering from the outside. Non vapor permeable sealers commonly available should never be used because they trap moisture inside actually accelerating deterioration. We use a special permeable sealer with a 10 year consumer warranty to protect your chimney. Doing this before deterioration occurs can save you hundreds or even thousands of dollars in future repairs. Water damage to chimneys is usually a slow subtle process. The problem is generally not obvious until it has become quite serious. Although these prevention measures may cost you a few dollars they can save you a lot more by preventing large future masonry repairs. The Hartmann’s at AirBroom Minnesota in Excelsior offer free no obligation repair estimates in the Western Metro area. Call John, Jim, or Lynda today to arrange a free no obligation estimate. Visit us at AirBroomMinnesota.com or call us at 952.545.2254. As a bonus, repair jobs over $750 scheduled with us prior to November 30 receive $100 off when you mention this article.

Partnership FROM PAGE 1 assist families moving to Minneapolis from outstate farms and across the country, as well as immigrant populations seeking employment in the burgeoning Minneapolis grain mill and lumber industries, the organization continues its work to this day, providing counseling, education programs and advocacy, Greenman explained. With offices in Minneapolis, Bloomington and Brooklyn Park, the organization works through schools, churches, service organizations, social workers and correctional institutions to assist people with a wide array of issues. From assisting victims of domestic abuse to kindergarten readiness programs, Family Partnership’s staff of about 100, and a network of more than 1,600 volunteers, provide assistance and outreach to residents primarily in Minneapolis, St. Paul and first-ring suburbs, Greenman said. “We cannot be all things to all people,” she noted, but calls for assistance are never turned away. “We will help them get to the service they do need,” she said. The organization is funded through government contracts,
United Way, private foundation and corporate grants and individual donations, according to Greenman. Family Partnership charges for some services, such as counseling, but those often qualify for medical assistance dollars, she noted. Its annual budget is $8.5 million, Greenman said. Family Partnership’s Bloomington office opened in 1974, at the request of United Way and Hennepin County. The Brooklyn Park office followed a few years later. “There weren’t a lot of services out there for families and kids,” she said. “We responded to a need.” The Alliance for Children and Families includes about 350 organizations nationwide. Family Partnership’s award is its first. The award recognizes excellence in board governance, leadership, advocacy and programming innovation, according to Greenman. “It’s a seal of approval, in a way, from our national organization,” she said. “This exceptional organization has proven its commitment to living its mission each day,” said Polina Makievsky, COO of Alliance for Children and Families. Information about Family Partnership services and locations is available online at thefamilypartnership.org.

You guessed it. He never won the Super Bowl. That’s no surprise, really, but when one looks at the Vikings now, it isn’t surprising that fans pine for the Vikings of the late 1960s and early 1970s. Sunde played on three Vikings teams that went to the Super Bowl and came out on the short end, but he was proud to be there. “You know what’s on the line,” he said. “We played against some great teams. For me, being part of a team was always the real deal. We had the Vikings’ 50th reunion last year, and that was a lot of fun.” Sunde, who was born in Bloomington, was recently inducted into the Bloomington Sports Hall of Fame during a banquet at the Knights of Columbus Hall. It was a proud moment for the former Pro Bowl player. “I appreciate it,” said Sunde. “It is a great honor to be a part of that group.” Sunde’s hall-of-fame career started in East Bloomington. His father ran Oxborough Automotive at 98th Street and Lyndale Avenue. Early in life, Sunde developed a passion for sports. He would grab the peach sports section of the Minneapolis Tribune every Sunday to read about his favorite college team, the Minnesota Gophers. Sunde started out in Bloomington Athletic Association, which local sports enthusiast Arnie Johnson founded in the mid-1950s. BAA provided opportunities for young boys to hone their skills in baseball, football and basketball. BAA sports prepared Sunde to star at Bloomington High School. It was a proud day when he put on a green and white varsity football uniform for the first time. In his senior year, the fall of 1959, Sunde played on Bloomington’s first Lake Conference championship team. He was one of the leaders along with Jerry Pelletier and Craig Olson. “When I first reported for high school football, I had visions of playing end or running back,” said Sunde. “But coach

Jerry Molosky looked at me and said, ‘Your brother was a tackle and you are a tackle.’ So that’s where I played.” Shorty Cochrane took over as Bloomington’s head coach for Sunde’s senior season, and by that time Sunde was entrenched at tackle, playing both ways. “Shorty brought a lot of energy and enthusiasm, and he helped us become a championship team,” said Sunde. After completing his high school career, and also lettering in basketball and track, it was time for Sunde to pick a college. Actually, it was an easy choice. “Jerry [Pelletier] was highly recruited by many schools,” said Sunde. “Murray Warmath at the University of Minnesota really wanted him and Jerry said, ‘I’ll come if you’ll give Sunde a scholarship,
too.’” Who knew at the time that Sunde would be an even better college player than Pelletier? In his sophomore year with the Gophers, Sunde played on a team that tied for the Big Ten Conference title and won the Rose Bowl. It was heady stuff for the boy from Bloomington, but he didn’t let success go to his head. “We had great players back then – Sandy Stephens, Bobby Bell, Carl Eller,” Sunde recalled. “I always wanted to go to the U. Jerry Pelletier and I roomed together.” When he joined the Vikings as a rookie, Sunde was undersized at about 240 pounds, but his technique was good and he played hard. That was enough to earn a
spot on the roster as an offensive guard. “I played for Bud Grant,” he said. “Bud was not a guy to scream and holler. He always wanted consistency, and that’s how he won.” Sunde earned a spot on the Pro Bowl roster in 1967 and played on the same offense with Baltimore’s Johnny Unitas, the premier quarterback of the day. Prior to what would have been his 12th season in the pros, Sunde retired. “I was cut by the Vikings, and then I went to training camp with the New York Jets,” he said. “I had always worked hard to get up to 245 pounds. The guys they were bringing in at the time were 285. It was time for me.” Sunde’s retirement from the NFL opened new doors. He had more time to spend with his family, his wife Barbara and their four daughters, Jennifer, Katy, Molly and Amy. The former Viking started coaching his daughters in their various BAA and traveling sports, and he became especially fond of coaching basketball. He eventually became a high school coach and had some great teams at one of the local private schools, Trinity. “Coaching takes a big commitment,” he said. “Back when I was in elementary school, I remember a fifth-grade teacher, John Workman, who picked us up and took us over to the elementary school gym so we could play basketball every Saturday morning. That made an impression on me.” Sunde is still coaching girls basketball even though all his daughters are adults now. “I am kind of a journeyman,” he said. “I have coached at Jefferson, Eden Prairie, Trinity, Augsburg College, Concordia Academy, Heritage Christian, Columbia Heights and, this year, I will be helping out at Eagan.” At Trinity, Sunde’s teams won the Minnesota Christian Athletic Association basketball title six years in a row. “I loved coaching at Trinity,” he said. “The girls were serious students and serious athletes. If you asked them to jump, they’d ask, how high?” Sunde’s community service and youth coaching were considered in his election to the Bloomington Sports Hall of Fame. The committee likes people who are willing to give their time to youth.

Section cross country champ from Jefferson heads to state Ketterson making fourth appearance in Northfield BY DAVE PEDERSEN – SUN NEWSPAPERS Sailing to the top at the Section 3AA cross country meet has not been a problem for Jan Ketterson of Bloomington Jefferson. It is the state meet where he has run trouble. Ketterson finished first at last week’s section meet at the University of Minnesota golf course and qualified for his fourth state meet. The state Class AA boys race will be 11 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 5, at St. Olaf College in Northfield. Ketterson said he expected his main competition to be Burnsville’s Cole O’Brien, the state meet runner-up from last year who won the South Suburban Conference meet a week earlier. “At 1 mile I picked up the pace to create a little gap and no one went with me,” Ketterson recalled. “At the 2-mile mark I picked it up a little more and nobody could keep up. When Cole fell out of the picture, I knew I was going to win. He was feeling a little sick.” Ketterson decided to set a faster pace because he said he does not trust his kick if there is a sprint to the finish. Instead of starting slowly and working his way up, this year he wanted to put himself in position to win every race. When he makes his break depends on the competition. “I have raced against everybody in state so far,” said Ketterson, who has been ranked third in Class AA all season. “One really big race was in Chaska where I was third behind the No. 1 and 2 rated guys.” In order to live up to his high ranking, Ketterson knows what it will take. “If I feel good, I should get in the top three, and go higher if someone else is a little down,” he said In past state meets, something has always kept Ketterson from challenging for medals. “I have not had good state races,” he admitted. Last year he was expected to be in the top 15, but ended 39th. Three days before the meet he had final exams at school. “I sat working my pencil for 12 hours over three days,” said Ketterson. “My shoulder got so tight I could barely move my arms. At state I felt terrible, dropping back early, and had to stop.” As a sophomore Ketterson entered state with a cold and didn’t make the top 100. In ninth grade he would have made all-conference, but was disqualified for a uniform violation when his running shorts were a different color than his teammates’. The senior has state meet experience in other sports, too. Ketterson placed 10th in the 3200-meter run at last year’s state track
meet and 14th at the state Nordic ski meet. “I am coming off of state meets in skiing and track, making it two successes instead of three failures,” Ketterson joked. The Section 3AA champion said he believes he will place high at state because of the type of training he has done the past couple of years. Former teammate and state standout runner Jacob Sandry taught Ketterson how to train. “Jacob was similar to me, barely making it to state the first three years,” Ketterson said. “His senior year he trained hard and became one of the best runners in the state. He did tons of extra workouts that nobody else did. He did more weight training and stayed after practice when all had left.” One thing Ketterson learned was to train specifically for both running and skiing all year long. In the summer he used roller skis with metal-tipped poles. He also lifted, gaining muscle and losing weight. “Ski training has helped me out a lot,” Ketterson said. “It is still aerobic training but with less impact, so I can work out a lot more without the risk of injury. I have built up my base really well.” Ketterson runs smart and also performs well in the classroom. He has a grade point average of 4.3 and is a National Merit semifinalist. Jefferson finished fourth of 15 boys teams at the section meet. Other finishers were sophomore Matt Rosen (23rd), junior Jacob Weber (31st), eighth-grader Zak Ketterson (35th), junior Jack Graves (70th), senior Ted McGee (73rd) and junior Jacob Miller (96th). The Jefferson girls finished 13th of 15 teams, led by senior Joni Weatherhead (50th), senior Dancia Martens (61st), ninthgrader Sydni Starling (62nd), sophomore Alexa Groenke (66th), junior Sydney Olson (68th), ninth-grader Kelly Mitzel (78th) and senior Anne Gathje (80th).
Kennedy Bloomington Kennedy also ran in the Section 3AA meet. The boys finished 10th, paced by junior Johnathan Hess (20th), ninth-grader Tamer Mische-Richter (37th), ninth-grader Ben Murphy (67th), junior Dave Brazel (69th), ninth-grader Grant Skophammer, senior John Lanouse (84th) and senior Montana Davis (97th). “This is a big step for us, and next year looks promising since our top five are returning,” said Kennedy coach Josh Coval. “The girls also had a great performance, finishing eighth, [which is] a 10-year best I believe.” Two eighth-graders led the charge, Morgan Curry was 22nd and Sarah Conlon finished 38th, followed by seventh-grader Chloe Larson (51st), sophomore Kathleen Cameron (59th), senior Jill Harm and sophomore Elise Johnson.

BY DAVE PEDERSEN – SUN NEWSPAPERS For the Bloomington Jefferson and Kennedy football teams, their section playoff elimination games were convincing. Prior Lake ran over Kennedy 31-7 on Oct. 29 in a Class 5A, Section 3 semifinal game. Four days earlier, the Lakers took out Jefferson 42-3 in the first round. Kennedy could not slow down a powerful Prior Lake rushing attack. Leading the surge was Jack Johnson with 102 yards and three touchdowns and Jack Kaiser with 96 yards. For Kennedy, Lexis Jones had 23 carries for 65 yards and one touchdown from 7 yards out. Quarterback Travon Hearns was 3-for-7 passing for 22 yards. Kennedy was strong out of the gate to open the playoffs with a 28-0 romp over Apple Valley. Hearns connected for three touchdown passes to three different receivers, going 8-for-14 for 124 yards. Scoring passes went to Nick Warren from 10 yards out, Arich Juberian from 29 and Derek McGaffey from 56 yards. James Ellis added a 15-yard touchdown run. Jones powered the running attack with 22 carries for 119 yards. Ellis gained 55 yards on 10 carries and Hearns rushed seven times for 22 yards. Juberian caught three passes for 43 yards. McGaffey had two catches for 62
yards and Warren gained 19 yards on two receptions. During the regular season, Jones gained 1,071 yards on 194 carries and scored nine touchdowns. Warren caught 16 passes for 292 yards and Hearns, the sophomore quarterback, completed 58 passes for 703 yards. Jefferson’s points against Prior Lake came on a 32-yard field goal by Charlie Fitch. “We had a Prior Lake down 3-0 at the end of the first quarter, but their size and strength got the better of us,” said Jefferson coach Jon Leverenz. “We didn’t turn the ball over like we had done in the previous games.” Leverenz said running back Andre Rowell and quarterback Joe Carlson made the option game look much better. He said offensive linemen Jon Vande Waa, Chris Beeth, Austin Hilgert, Colin Garlock and Andy Seaberg had their best game. Senior defenders Bryan Alm and Nick Schubert had double-digit tackling points. Connor Weatherby and Jake Olsonoski also played well on defense, the coach said. Also, with Jefferson’s help, the South Suburban Conference raised $7,844 for the Wounded Warrior Project, Leverenz said. Jefferson initiated the fundraising effort before it was adopted by the entire conference.

Jefferson advances, Kennedy bows out of volleyball playoffs BY DAVE PEDERSEN – SUN NEWSPAPERS As expected, the top four seeds in the Class 3A, Section 3 volleyball tournament advanced to the final two rounds, which are expected to be hotly contested. No. 4 seed Bloomington Jefferson swept No. 5 Eastview in three sets Oct. 28 to advance to the semifinals against No. 1 seed Lakeville South on Wednesday, Nov. 2 (after this issue went to press). The title match is against either No. 2 Eagan or No. 3 Lakeville North at 7 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 5, at Simley High School. The final rounds of the section tournament could have some epic battles involving four of the top teams in the state. Jefferson’s chances could rest on how Jefferson senior hitter and six-year starter Haley Bodway does after being out several weeks with injuries. She was cleared to play in the section semifinals.
During Bodway’s recovery, the Jaguars have stayed competitive, ranked as high as No. 2 in the state. In anything, team depth has been strengthened during Bodway’s absence. Against Eastview, senior Kelley Wollak powered the offense with 13 kills, followed closely by Sydnie Zachary, a promising eighth-grader, with 12 kills. Senior Ivy Shepherd added seven kills, 15 digs and handled 27 of the team’s 40 serve receptions.
Kennedy bows out No. 7 seed Kennedy started strong in the playoffs by sweeping Simley. However, No. 2 seed Eagan swept the Eagles in the next round. Against Simley, senior middle hitter Karin Bull had 11 kills, three blocks and 12 digs. Senior hitter Sarah Novitzki added nine kills and 11 digs. Senior hitter Heather Bachman had six kills and 13 digs. Senior hitter Alaina Brown had four ace serves, six kills and 14 digs.
Junior setter Christy Boelter sprained her ankle prior to the Simley match but returned to the lineup against Eagan. Justine Legut stepped in to run the offense against Simley. Head coach Kevin Nelson said his team was outmatched by Eagan on Oct. 28. “Although not 100 percent back from her injury, Christy showed true toughness and did a great job setting,” said Nelson. “But our passing just wasn’t good enough to help her run the offense effectively enough to be able to compete with a team of Eagan’s caliber.” Against Eagan, Bull led the way with 10 kills and Brown had seven. Boelter led the Eagles defensively with 14 digs. Bachman added 11 digs and two ace serves. Kennedy finished the season 13-15 overall. Bull, a senior captain, finished with 199 kills, a hitting percentage of .477, 241 digs and 100 blocks. Brown, also a senior captain, compiled 238 kills, 349 digs and 65 service aces. Bachman, the
third senior captain, finished with 167 kills, 24 aces, 207 digs and 50 blocks. “This was a really fun and rewarding season,” said Nelson. “Kennedy volleyball took a couple of big steps forward and had some great moments. The team really learned what it meant to be dedicated and aggressive. The talent had already been established, but the real success this season was in developing confidence and a winning attitude.” Highlights of the season included a victory over Prior Lake, Kennedy’s first conference win in four years. There was the seventh-place finish at the 32-team St. Michael-Albertville tournament. And players will never forget their first win over crosstown rival Jefferson in six seasons. With 10 graduating seniors and three returning varsity players, Nelson will be looking to younger players to lead the way next year. “Kennedy volleyball has the right pieces in place to keep moving forward as a program,” the coach said.
