Council approves platting for Muslim community center BY MIKE HANKS – SUN NEWSPAPERS A proposal to combine the plats associated with a future Muslim community center provided the Bloomington City Council and residents with an exercise in determining what was or wasn’t germane to the matter at hand. When the workout was complete, the council approved the preliminary and final plat for the property, as well as a variance request associated with the plan. The council approved a conditionaluse permit for the Al Farooq Youth and Family Center earlier this year. The former school building at 8201 Park Ave. S. includes a separate parcel that has an athletic field and courts, a shared amenity developed jointly by the city and the building’s former ownership. Council narrowly rejects expansion of senior housing campus BY MIKE HANKS – SUN NEWSPAPERS Hearing late night pleas to keep additional traffic out of their neighborhood, the Bloomington City Council narrowly denied a proposal to expand the Martin Luther Campus in east Bloomington. The campus includes a 137-bed nursing home known as Martin Luther Manor and the 108-unit Meadow Woods assisted living facility. The proposal was for a 67-unit facility for seniors, com-
posed of 17 studio units, 44 one-bedroom units and six two-bedroom units. The facility was intended to provide housing with minimal care services. The new building was to connect the two existing buildings on the south side and add parking through construction of an underground parking garage. After hearing traffic concerns from residents and debating the merits of the proposal the council voted 4-3 to deny the conditional-use permit and building

plans in the early morning hours of Nov. 22. The vote was taken more than six hours after the council convened its meeting at 7 p.m. Nov. 21. The council’s 4-3 vote was to draft a resolution for denial, which will be presented to the council at its Dec. 5 meeting. Councilmember Steve Peterson was on the prevailing side of the vote. “For me it does come down to the traffic issue,” he said. With the neighborhood south of 98th Street bearing the majority of the traffic for the facility, predominantly 13th Avenue, Peterson preferred to take steps to guide the development to a better location. Councilmember Amy Grady also voted to deny the proposal, citing concerns about the existing traffic on 13th Avenue. “This add trips,” she said. “I’m not comfortable adding another trip to this neighborhood. “I think this would be injurious to the neighborhood,” she added. Mayor Gene Winstead said he has great affection for the facility and wanted to see the project move forward, noting that for many years his parents had
resided there. Councilmember Karen Nordstrom also favored the proposal and questioned if more could be done by Martin Luther Campus to minimize traffic. She doubted the expansion would increase traffic to and from the campus significantly. Councilmember Vern Wilcox opposed the plan, and criticized representatives of Martin Luther Manor for their arguments that the city has had the opportunity to restrict development opportunities of the campus in the past, but has not done so. Wilcox interpreted the argument as saying, “The city screwed up by not putting those tools in place and therefore should punish the neighborhood because we didn’t do our job. “I resent that a little bit.” If Wilcox thought there was a way to approve the project without negatively impacting the neighborhood he said he would have been willing to postpone a decision. “I just don’t see this coming together.” Councilmember Tim Busse compared the issues raised by the proposal to REJECTION: TO NEXT PAGE

explained. With Normandale, the campus sits at the intersection of 98th Street and France Avenue, two major thoroughfares in the city. The Martin Luther Manor proposal, however, affects a neighborhood off of 98th Street, at 13th Avenue. The expansion of the Martin Luther campus was too much to ask of the neighborhood, he said. Councilmember Tom Hulting also voted against denying the proposal.

Jet packs and thought pods and more Gift giving is easy, when money is no object I think for the first time I will try online Christmas shopping this year. It seems easier, and the options seem wider. I have made no purchases yet, but my hunt has begun, and I have found some doozies. Here, I will share some discoveries from a recent online windowshopping session — all things I plan on purchasing as gifts, assuming I find a couple million dollars in my the pocket of my winter jacket when I dust it off for the season. Picking the right gift can be hard, unless it’s a jet pack. And I found an ingenious one, called the Jet-Lev Flyer ($130,000) that shoots the operator 20 feet into the air, powered by water that it sucks up water via hose, regurgitating it as a punishing, propelling blast. Whoever is lucky enough to find this one under the tree will have to wait for spring, however — or go on vacation — before they can use it, as the device only works on water. But it is not your only jet

pack option. A manufacturer called Martin Aircraft makes one that goes for only $86,000, and is said to achieve 30 minutes of flight time. The company calls it the safest jet pack in the world. It’s the Volvo of jet packs. It seems what we’re dealing with here, when picking between these two packs is, do we want to rocket around, funin-the-sun, beer-commercial style with the Jet-Lev water model? Or, do we want something a little more practical, like the Martin Aircraft pack? I think there’s room for both. For quieter times I found something called the Inspirational Archipod. The $40,000, 13 feet tall, 9 feet in diameter igloo-shaped cocoon is designed to imbue the occupant with maximum creativity. Because you’re in a dome, you see? And ideas really bounce around in there. The Inspirational Archipod is shin-
gled by the very creative and handsome Western Red Cedar, which covers the double insulated walls. A gull-winged door opens up to the dome-y interior, which features walls with no visible joints that might trap inspiration, creativity or enlightenment. Portholes, and a clear top that hinges open, allow whiffs of brilliance to float in. I foresee a bright future where Inspirational Archipods dot bucolic corporate campuses across America, ushering in some sort of Age of Aquarius and the 20-hour work week. For now, I bet some people in California have them, at least. If you like motorcycles or science fiction, I might get you the Tron-cycle ($55,000). Based on the movie “Tron: Legacy,” the Tron-cycle — actually called the Light Cycle on the website that sells it — is street legal and accented with strips of electro-luminescent lighting that is turned to a blur by a fuel injected Suzuki 996cc, 4stroke engine. Taking the hunt back to domestic territory, I have also considered my friends and family who prefer that their home décor be made of
firearms. For them I will purchase the elegant AK-47 table lamp. The lamp’s 24-inch porcelain neck is, of course, a pretend AK-47 resting upright on its butt. It costs $445, which I imagine is the price you might pay on the black market for the real thing. I am not in favor of guns — I have never even fired one — so I don’t want to belabor the point, but I must mention, the company that makes the AK-47 lamp, Loaded Objects Ceramics, also makes one modeled after a Tri9mm handgun. The classy ensemble is completed with a set of chess pawns shaped like grenades. The above is just a quick sampling. Dig, and you’ll find some gems yourself. Check out the perfectly named thisiswhyimbroke.com, or uncrate.com or hammacher.com for more outrageous gift ideas. But remember your neighbors, too. Maybe some these zany, highend items can only be obtained online, but your local retailers also could use your business. Maybe buy the jet pack online, but visit your shops can help you with the more pedestrian items. That is what responsible consumerism is all about.

Familiar story results in another fraud investigation BY MIKE HANKS – SUN NEWSPAPERS The last of the suspects connected to a pair of August purse thefts in Bloomington has been arrested, but one of the women arrested in connection with the case was identified as an accomplice in a new incident tied to Bloomington. A 35-year-old Fridley woman voluntarily turned herself in Nov. 18 following a Bloomington Police Department investigation that connected her to a wallet theft, according to Bloomington Police Commander Mark Stehlik. The victim told police that she discovered her wallet was missing from her purse on Oct. 10. She had used her wallet to make a purchase the previous day and had placed her purse inside a locker at the Bloomington Goodwill store that same day. The victim learned a credit card and debit card from her wallet were used to make multiple purchases in the area near the Goodwill store, Stehlik said. Charges on the victim’s cards included $404 at Home Dept, three separate charges at Walmart totaling $181 and a purchase at a Richfield gas station. All of the purchases were made within a short period of time, according to Stehlik. Surveillance video showed a white female exiting a dark Pontiac and making purchases connected to a stolen card. Although the Pontiac was not immediately identifiable from the surveillance video, the car was eventually identified as belonging to a 33-year-old Minneapolis woman who was a suspect in the August Bloomington incidents. The white female was also identified as the 35-year-old Fridley woman, who was also a suspect in other cases around the Twin Cities, Stehlik explained. A Bloomington investigator made contact with the Fridley woman and presented her with the information that had been collected by police. The suspect told police that she was on probation, was broke and had no way to pay her rent. She said that she had an agreement with the 33-year-old Minneapolis woman to use the stolen debit and credit cards that the Minneapolis woman obtained and split the proceeds. The Fridley woman faces possible felony charges for her role in the case, Stehlik noted.
Attempted fraud A trio attempting to use a stolen credit card at Mall of America was less than successful before being apprehended by police. The trio – a 22-year-old Fridley man, 21year-old Minneapolis man and a 17-year-
old St. Paul boy – were arrested Nov. 17 after attempting to purchase $415 worth of clothing with an unsigned credit card at Hollister. The trio selected clothing in the store without regard to size or price, according to a store employee. When the trio attempted to purchase the clothing with a credit card, a manager confirmed the card had been reported stolen, Stehlik said. Upon being questioned about the card by a loss prevention officer, nobody claimed the card as his. The trio quickly fled the store, Stehlik noted. Mall surveillance tracked two members of the trio to the mall’s transit hub, where a Bloomington police officer found them. The third person was also tracked down by police, Stehlik added.

Inside job A 24-year-old Minneapolis woman was arrested for theft following an investigation by her employer. The Herberger’s employee was arrested Nov. 17, accused of making approximately 20 fraudulent returns that were credited to her bank debit card. The transactions totaled $3,556, Stehlik said. The woman told police she had been using the money to pay medical bills when questioned about the activity and

Memory lapse? A woman accused of shoplifting from Bloomingdale’s at Mall of America claimed that she had forgotten to pay for bed sheets, pillow cases, pajamas, a jacket and socks she had stowed in a stroller. The 43-year-old Aberdeen, S.D., woman was arrested Nov. 19. She had been observed by store security concealing items in a bag and under coats in a stroller. She was confronted at her vehicle by mall security after having purchased two pillows. She said she had forgotten to pay for the other items, totaling $1,119, and had intended to return to pay for them. When questioned by police about the incident the woman told an officer, “I have no idea what is going on.” The woman was familiar to Bloomingdale’s security, as she was recognized as a woman they observed concealing about $1,600 worth of merchandise in June. The woman had abandoned the merchandise before leaving the store, however, so she was not arrested at that time, Stehlik explained. The woman, who faces a possible felony theft charge, had three children with her during the incident. She was able to call a friend who picked them up while the woman was in custody, Stehlik noted.
alarm had been triggered and a window had been broken. It was determined that seven bottles of liquor had been removed from the bar, but two had been dropped and broken at the restaurant. Bottles of vodka, tequila and scotch had been taken from the bar, with the most expensive bottle valued at $120, Stehlik said.

Robbery suspect matches descriptions from Richfield, Bloomington incidents A man who robbed a bank in Minneapolis at gunpoint on Tuesday, Nov. 22, has a description similar to those from a Richfield bank robbery and an attempted bank robbery in Bloomington. According to the FBI, at about 1:30 p.m. a white male entered Bremer Bank at 3001 Hennepin Ave., brandished a gun and demanded cash. The robber fled to a parking ramp after receiving an undisclosed amount of cash, and utilized a crossover-style vehicle, the release says. The man is suspected of several other bank robberies in the metro area, and is a white male in his late 20s to early 30s, approximately 5 feet 10 inches tall, with a skinny build, according to the FBI. He was wearing a black hooded sweatshirt, blue jeans, black shoes and a ski mask during the robbery.
A man with a similar description attempted to rob Richfield Bloomington Credit Union at gunpoint Nov. 9, but left empty-handed after being told there was no cash on hand. The suspect in a Nov. 4 armed robbery of First National Bank of the Lake in Richfield also resembles the man suspected in the Minneapolis robbery. Authorities have not confirmed a connection between the incidents. “We’re reviewing all of the recent bank robberies to determine whether or not one individual is responsible,” FBI representative Kyle Loven said. Anyone with information regarding the robberies should call the FBI at 612-376-3200, the Richfield Police Department at 612-861-9800, or Bloomington Police Department at 952-563-4900. –COMPILED BY ANDREW WIG

Minnesota Special Hockey expanding opportunities Organization adding teams across state for players with developmental disabilities BY KATIE MINTZ – SUN NEWSPAPERS Some of Minnesota’s most dedicated hockey players returned to the ice last month, and in growing numbers. Minnesota Special Hockey, a nonprofit, volunteer-run league for Minnesotans with developmental disabilities, recently kicked off its fifth season. Since its start in 2006, the program has grown from a six-week trial with 27 players to a five-month season with nine teams across the state. “The more people hear about it the more they want to do it,” Minnesota Special Hockey President Jane Cashin of Edina said. “We probably are the fastest growing special hockey association in the nation.” Minnesota Special Hockey began when Susie Miller, now general manager of Braemar Arena in Edina, was a recreation supervisor for the city with a focus on adaptive programs. After learning about a high-functioning autistic girl on her daughter’s youth hockey team, she told the girl’s family she’d help them find an organization that would allow her to continue playing in the longterm. ‘“There was floor hockey, poly hockey. Minnesota has many programs for individuals with disabilities,” she said. “Just about any sport you want to play you can.” Except for ice hockey, she discovered. At the time, Miller was pursuing a master’s degree in recreation administration, and as part of her coursework, created a six-week special hockey program through Edina’s adaptive recreation office. In spring 2006, 27 participants came

That fall, with the help from numerous other volunteers, Minnesota Special Hockey was launched with two teams – the Edina Stingers and Blaine Polars. “This year we have nine and we’re hoping for more than 100 players,” said Miller, who continues to serve on the organization’s board. There are now teams in New Hope,
Rogers, Woodbury and International Falls, as well as three new teams for the 2011-2012 season in Burnsville, Alexandria and the Moorhead-Fargo area. Cashin said she often feels swamped with emails and phone calls from families of interested players and people who want to start teams. She said the organization needs at least one dedicated volunteer to get a team up and running in a community.

Her son Sam Cashin, 18, a senior at Edina High School, participated in the first six-week program and continues to play on the Edina Stingers. She said he had been attending his sister’s hockey games as her team’s stick boy for years before that, but never had the opportunity to be on a team himself. It’s been a great experience, she said. Participants of every age and ability are accepted to play. The Edina team has players ranging from age 4 to into their 40s. Coaches form lines based on ability so that during games, teams are evenly matched. Each team meets for an hour every Sunday November through March and plays six games a season. “It’s really a chance for kids who can’t play in normal leagues to get out on the ice,” said Greg Williamson of Eden Prairie, who has coached the Edina Stingers for three years. He said he enjoys seeing people he knows from work and school. “I have a lot of friends here,” said Brett Williamson. Among them is his younger brother Ryan Williamson, a senior at Eden Prairie High School, who helps at practices and announces some games. Many siblings and high school hockey players volunteer to help as assistant coaches. “There’s a lot of camaraderie,” said Edina resident George Holden, chair of the Minnesota Special Hockey Board, whose daughter Allie, 23, is on the Edina Stingers. “She enjoys seeing the other players every week.” Holden said it costs the nonprofit organization about $5,000 to start a team, and donations are sought to make the program available to more. Minnesota Special Hockey has been fortunate to receive support from youth hockey associations in the various cities where it operates, he said. Many have donated or offered discounted ice time. Each Minnesota Special Hockey player receives a jersey and team stockings from the organization. Scholarships and equipment help are available for those in need. “Our vision is to make ice hockey avail-

COMMUNITY NOTES
FROM PREVIOUS PAGE “Our addiction is a threat to national security that drains our treasury and jeopardizes future generations,” Conley said. “Yet over 95 percent of our transportation system is fueled by oil with no scalable alternative to replace it … an omission that will cost us dearly as global oil supply goes into permanent decline.” The book has won praise from former U.S. Congressman Jim Ramstad. “Regardless of your politics, the chilling scenarios in Mike’s novel cannot be ignored,” Ramstad said. “They are major challenges requiring collaborative solutions, and it is important that we take action while there is still time. I’m afraid not enough people recognize the magnitude of the issues …” The book has also found favor with polar explorer Will Steger, who called it a must-read “for anyone interested in these topics in an accessible way, with a twist of fiction thrown in for fun.” Conley is also chairman and CEO of the Conley Family Foundation, which has claimed nearly $1 million in assets in IRS filings. Conley and his wife, Sharon, have two daughters.

Is Water Ruining Your Chimney? The Professionals At AirBroom Minnesota In Excelsior Can Help How does your chimney look? Are the bricks crumbling? Does it have White or Black exterior staining? Are you afraid to use your fireplace because you’re not sure how safe it is? When was the last time you used it? The professionals at AirBroom Minnesota Fireplace and Air Duct Cleaning in Excelsior can restore both your confidence and your chimney. Did you know that water causes more damage to masonry chimneys than fire? Your chimney, unlike other parts of your house, is constantly exposed to the elements. They are generally constructed of brick, mortar, tile, steel, and iron. All of these materials suffer deterioration as a result of prolonged contact with water. Freeze and thaw cycles so familiar here in the Twin Cities cause stress on the chimney. Water that has penetrated expands and contracts. Left unchecked it will cause interior and exterior damage to your home and masonry chimney. Some of the damage that can be caused includes: 1) spalled and broken exterior brickwork, 2) deteriorated masonry and metal firebox assemblies, 3) rusted dampers, 4) decayed mortar, cracked or missing flue liners, and in the worst case scenario damage to adjoining walls, ceilings, and woodwork. There are three main ways to prevent water damage. 1) Install a chimney cap. This is the most inexpensive measure to prevent water penetration to the flue and inside chimney elements. We sell and install locally manufactured caps for as little as $99. 2) Repair or replace a damaged chimney crown. The crown sits atop your chimney and covers and seals it from the flue liners to the chimney edge. Many chimneys are built with an inadequate crown constructed from common mortar mix. Mortar is not designed for and will not withstand years of prolonged moisture exposure without cracking and chipping which allows water to penetrate the chimney. A proper crown is constructed of a Portland
cement mixture and formed to provide an overhang drip edge. This assures the water will shed helping to prevent erosion in the mortar and brick of the chimneys surfaces. Keeping the crown “watertight” and shedding away from the sponge like masonry elements that the chimney is built of is the most important element to preventing deterioration. At AirBroom Minnesota we use the industry leading line of Saver products to build and repair chimneys. Use of these products allows us to pass on manufacturers material warranties of up to 15 years to our clients. 3) Waterproof your masonry chimney and crown. Most masonry is porous and will absorb large amounts of water. Brick acts like a sponge absorbing water and wicking it to the chimney interior. Products we use are specifically developed for use as waterproofing agents on masonry chimneys. These are vapor permeable – which means they allow the masonry to breath out but not in. This allows water that has penetrated the chimney to escape while preventing additional water from entering from the outside. Non vapor permeable sealers commonly available should never be used because they trap moisture inside actually accelerating deterioration. We use a special permeable sealer with a 10 year consumer warranty to protect your chimney. Doing this before deterioration occurs can save you hundreds or even thousands of dollars in future repairs. Water damage to chimneys is usually a slow subtle process. The problem is generally not obvious until it has become quite serious. Although these prevention measures may cost you a few dollars they can save you a lot more by preventing large future masonry repairs. Approval FROM PAGE 1 ing through a lease arrangement with Xcel Energy, which owns property associated with the transmission corridor that runs through the area. The proposal was to combine all three parcels into one plat with a platting variance to allow conveyance of a portion of the transmission corridor to Al Farooq. The variance was requested because of the unusual characteristics of the
corridor, which runs underneath power lines for several blocks along Park Avenue. The primary parking area for the building is on Xcel Energy property through a lease agreement between Xcel Energy and the building’s previous ownership, the Concordia Academy Association of Schools. Since the leased parking area provides the primary access to the building, Al Farooq’s lenders consider the value of the school property to be dependent upon access to the land. The ability to terminate the lease agreement for the parking area by either

party was not seen as favorable by Al Farooq’s lending agency, according to attorney Ferdinand Peters, who represented the youth and family center. The purchase of a portion of the transmission corridor was not the desire of Al Farooq’s leadership, as it was seen as advantageous only to the lenders, he noted. Xcel Energy, which prefers to sell the property rather than lease it, will retain an easement to the property for transmission line access, and structures cannot be built on the transmission corridor parcel, Planning Manager Glen Markegard told the council. By combining the parking area with the school building, Al Farooq is required to survey and plat the entire parcel, not just the portion it is acquiring, unless given a variance by the council. To grant the variance, the council had to determine that an unusual hardship exists to justify the variance and that the hardship is not the result of actions by the applicant. The city has previously granted a similar variance for a separate portion of the corridor. City Attorney Sandra Johnson reminded the council that its task was to determine, “Whether or not an unusual hardship or practical difficulty exists to vary from the platting requirement. “This is not an opportunity for the city council legally to reconsider, revoke, revisit or add any conditions to its prior conditional-use permit approvals,” she added. “Those are not
before the city council tonight,” she noted. “What you do tonight will not affect those.” In opening the public hearing, Mayor Gene Winstead reiterated its purpose. “Please keep your testimony or your comments germane to the variance or the preliminary and final platting procedure that is before us.” One question related to the platting that generated discussion was drainage of the property. The existing drainage and utility easements are being vacated as part of the process, but will be re-established as part of the new plat. Concerns raised about drainage conditions around the building, however, were not addressed by the council. “That relates to issues that are not germane to this application,” City Manager Mark Bernhardson said. “We will review the issue,” he added. “If it needs to be addressed, we will look at addressing it.” The council voted 5-2 in favor of the platting variance, with council members Tom Hulting and Vern Wilcox dissenting. Wilcox said he didn’t see a hardship in surveying and platting the entire parcel. If Xcel Energy is interested in selling the parcel, he disagreed that it should be the burden of Al Farooq to complete the work or obtain the variance. He also favored addressing drainage issues in conjunction with the re-platting. Wilcox cast the lone vote against the preliminary and final plat for the youth and family center, as well as the vacation of easements for the associated properties.

Kennedy’s talent-laden squad has high expectations Girls basketball team is ranked third in state BY GREG KLEVEN SUN NEWSPAPERS Bloomington Kennedy head girls basketball coach Percy Wade has high expectations for his 2011-2012 squad. Heather Bachman, a 6-4 senior post, will attend Kent State on a basketball scholarship next school year. Jade Martin, a 6-0 junior guard/forward, is headed to Georgetown in two seasons. Kennedy’s 5-9 sophomore guard Kenisha Bell has already committed to the University of Minnesota. And 6-2 sophomore guard Tonoia Wade is being recruited heavily by Division I schools. Then Jefferson will battle perennial state power Centennial at 7:15 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 8, at Bloomington Ice Garden. “We have a challenging December schedule,” said Jefferson coach Jeff Lindquist. “We are young with few seniors on the squad, but those players have skills and I am optimistic about the upcoming season.” Jefferson finished third in the South Suburban Conference a year ago with a 12-4-2 record. The Jaguars’ final record was 15-9-3 after a Section 2AA semifinal loss to Burnsville. “Eagan will be the team to beat in the South Suburban after placing third at state last season,” said Lindquist. “Eagan has everybody back and will be a fast-skating and skilled team.” Senior forward Austin Hunt will provide leadership for the Jaguars as captain. Jefferson alternate captains are senior defenseman Ian Janco and junior defender Jack Weiss. Patience is the key for Bloomington Kennedy’s boys hockey coach Dave Dillon as he tries to rebuild the Eagles’ program. Kennedy was 2-24 a year ago. Many underclassmen from that team learned valuable lessons while taking their lumps on the scoreboard. The Eagles’ schedule should help the record look better this season. Kennedy will play a modified schedule with nine games against South Suburban Conference foes and rest against non-conference opponents. “We will try to improve our confidence with this schedule,” said Dillon, who is starting his third year as head coach. “We will be a younger team than last season. Our program’s future strength should come from our sophomore and freshmen classes.
“We will be road warriors this season, playing only seven home games.” Kennedy’s co-captains are senior forward Jack Murphy, senior defenseman Jordan Peer and senior forward Payten Graykowski. Other Eagle key returnees are junior center Mike McCullen, junior forward Brad Hinrichs, senior defenseman Andrew LaMere and senior goalkeeper Tony Basil. “We should be a better team than we were a year ago,” said Dillon. “We have players who are dedicated and understand the commitment to hockey. “I’m excited about this team.” Kennedy hits the road for a game against Rochester John Marshall at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 1. The Eagles play Hopkins at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 6, at Hopkins Pavilion. Kennedy meets Eastview at 10 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 10, at Dakotah Ice Arena. Kennedy’s coaching staff consists of Dillon, Ron Lokken, Dave Miller, Scott Manson and Jeff Atchison.

Trebil is optimistic about youthful Stars hockey squad Holy Angels boasts talented underclassmen BY GREG KLEVEN – SUN NEWSPAPERS This is Greg Trebil’s final season as Holy Angels’ head boys hockey coach. Next season he will assume the role of director of hockey operations for both the girls and boys programs at the Richfield-based private school. Former Holy Angels all-state hockey forward Billy Hengen is the Stars’ associate head coach with Trebil this season and will become head coach next year. Trebil knows this will be a rebuilding season for his Holy Angels squad with a varsity roster dominated by under- Greg Trebil classmen. But the veteran coach and longtime Bloomington resident is looking forward to this season. “We might be young but do have many top-notch players,” said Trebil.
Bill Hengen
“We have outstanding leaders in our tri-captains. “We could surprise a number of people before this season is over.” Holy Angels tri-captains are senior forward Trevor Meador, junior forward Mario Bianchi and junior defenseman
Frankie Mork. Two other key returnees are junior defenseman Tyler Lodin and junior forward Tony Haeg. Sophomore goalie Will Dupont is back after seeing varsity duty last season. Ninth-grader Jack Trudell is expected to contribute to the Holy Angels varsity squad as well. The Stars’ coaching staff is using preseason drills to sort out other varsity candidates. Holy Angels will open its 2011 season against Holy Family at 2:30 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 3, at Richfield Ice Arena. The Stars host Stillwater at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 7.

Greg Wicklund joins USTA’s Northern Tennis Hall of Fame BY JOHN SHERMAN – SUN NEWSPAPERS Edina Country Club tennis professional Greg Wicklund came to the sport almost by accident. But it was no accident that he was inducted into the United States Tennis Association’s Northern Section Hall of Fame during ceremonies Oct. 14 at International Market Square in Minneapolis. Wicklund, who has been a tennis pro in Edina for 29 years, has worked with some of the metro area’s best players, including Minnetonka’s David Wheaton and Edina standouts Jeannette Cluskey, Justin Gaard, Chris Sherman and Whitney Taney. Getting back to the story of how he got involved in the sport, Wicklund didn’t start playing until he was 16 years old. “My parents bought a house across the street from Sibley Park in Minneapolis, and the park had two tennis courts,” Wicklund recalled. “In those days you sometimes had to wait to get on a court.” Wicklund played for hours on those courts with some of his buddies from Roosevelt High School. He found out right away that he had a knack for the game. “I had played baseball, basketball, hockey and golf, but once I started playing tennis, it was my sport,” he said. Wicklund played in the state tournament as a junior and then made it to the state championship match in his senior season. He was offered a tennis scholarship by University of Minnesota coach Jerry Noyce and quickly accepted. With the Gophers, he won the Big Ten Conference singles title in 1981, the same year the Gophers won the conference team title. “It was an honor to play at Minnesota and an honor to play for Jerry Noyce,” said Wicklund. After his playing career ended at
Minnesota, Wicklund stayed on for six years as Noyce’s assistant coach. At the same time, he started his career as a teaching pro. “I knew when I was in college that I wanted to teach tennis for a living,” said Wicklund, who has continued to play in tournaments to this day. “Teaching the game is fun for me,” he said. “I think I get more excited than my players do when they win.” Wheaton, who was ranked 12th in the world at one time, is Wicklund’s most successful student. “I started hitting with David when he was 14 and I was 24,” said Wicklund. “We still keep in touch and still hit sometimes.” Wicklund said the game has changed over the years, but it is still played on the same-sized court, so the importance of well-placed shots has not changed. “Technology and equipment have definitely changed,” said Wicklund. “Players are faster, more fit and capable of hitting the ball harder. When I played it was more of a finesse game.” Wicklund still wants his students to grasp the need for finesse. “When I work with young players, I teach strokes, strategy and footwork and also cover all the intricacies of the game,” said Wicklund. There are approximately 300 players in the Edina Country Club tennis program. Wicklund knows their names, even though he does not work directly with all of them. “Over the years, we have kind of been a feeder system for the Edina High School teams,” he said. “I love working with everyone at Edina Country Club. We have a beautiful new building and some of the best clay courts in the state.” As he looks to the future, Wicklund said that teaching tennis would remain his life’s work. Given his track record, that’s good news for a new generation of players.
