BY MIKE HANKS – SUN NEWSPAPERS A 55-year-old Bloomington man has been found guilty in the 2010 hitand-run death of an 85-year-old Bloomington woman who was walking home after having dinner with her husband at a nearby care facility. Mark Wayne Lindgren was found guilty Dec. 14 following a stipulated facts trial, according to Hennepin County Attorney Mike Freeman. Lindgren will be sentenced in February and faces up to two years in prison, Freeman noted. Lindgren was charged in November 2010 following the Oct. 21 hit-and-run death of Dorothy Hanson. Hanson was struck at approximately 7:30 p.m. near the intersection of Old Shakopee Road and 10th Avenue. Witnesses said the vehicle did not stop after hitting Hanson, who died that night at Hennepin County Medical Center, according to the criminal complaint. Although the vehicle was unidentified the night of Hanson’s death, witnesses described it as a dark-colored, full-sized, extended-cab pickup

ECM Publishers, a media company based in Coon Rapids, Minn., has signed a Letter of Intent to acquire the Minnesota Sun Newspapers from American Community Newspapers II located in Dallas, Texas. While ACN has accepted the Letter of Intent, purchase agreement negotiations are ongoing. “This potential combination promises vital hometown journalism for scores of suburban communities,” said Julian Andersen, CEO and Chairman of ECM. “Both of these newspaper groups are staffed and led by talented and effective associates, who will bring vim and vigor to the opportunities and responsibilities of a larger media enterprise.” “ECM is always looking for ways to grow as an information company,” said Marge Winkelman, president and chief operating officer. “ECM has grown over 35 years from a weekly newspaper in Princeton, Minn., to a company with 21 publications delivered to more than 300,000 Minnesota homes.” “Opportunities of this magnitude rarely happen and ECM is looking forward to working with all the associates at the Sun Newspaper Group and to continue to provide quality newspapers and an online presence to all the communities that we serve,” Winkelman emphasized that no final agreement has been reached with ACN, but hopes a signed agreement will happen before the end of this year. A December bike race through a Bloomington park would typically present a snowy terrain for the competitors, but those who participated in the Cross 4 Tots races Dec. 17 at Bloomignton’s Vanderbie Park had bare grass to race upon as they weaved their way through the racecourse. In addition to winding turns riders have to navigate up and down hills within the park and carry their bikes over hurdles along the way. The race, sponsored by Hollywood Cycles of Bloomington raised donations and collected toys for Toys for Tots. (Photos by Mike Hanks – Sun Newspapers)

group publisher for Minnesota Sun Newspapers states “The greatest resource we have are the people who work for us, the merger will bring our talented staff from both companies together to create one of the strongest community newspaper groups in the region. The future will bring us great opportunities to serve our readers and advertisers, grow our market share, and develop new print and digital products. Both companies have a very strong commitment to community journalism and combined will add tremendous synergy to the marketplace.” Both ECM and the Sun Group are composed of newspapers, shoppers, and websites. ECM publishes 15 newspapers and six shoppers with total weekly circulation of 155,000 and 191,000 respectively. The Sun Group
publishes 32 newspapers and two shoppers with total weekly circulation of 357,000 and 38,000 respectively. ECM websites attract 1,000,000 page views a month, and Sun Group websites attract 461,000 page views per month. ECM was created in 1976 by Elmer L. Andersen, who started this newspaper company after a successful career as businessman, state legislator, and governor. The company began when Andersen bought competing weekly newspapers in Princeton and combined them into the Princeton Union-Eagle. Subsequently, ECM added a commercial web printing plant in Princeton and acquired an independent delivery company that now operates as a division of ECM. In a sequence of transactions over the past 30 years, ECM acquired additional newspapers. For further information, call Marge Winkelman at 763-712-2402. Dirks, Van Essen & Murray, a newspaper merger and acquisition firm based in Santa Fe, NM represented American Community Newspapers in the transaction.

Al’s Vacuum tailors products to customer needs Buying a new vacuum cleaner these days is like looking over multiple racks and shelves of clothing in a department store, looking for the one, depending on taste, fit and budget. That is why Al’s Vacuum and Janitorial Supply Co., 9517 Lyndale Ave. S in Bloomington, offers 40 brands and 200 models of vacuum cleaners and can repair anything. This is not to confuse customers, but to satisfy them. “We tailor our suggestion for the specific user, that’s why there are so many choices,” says Dave Rempher, store manager who has worked at Al’s for 30 years. “It would simplify life incredibly if we had just two models to sell.” New technology involving materials and mechanics has increased the wide range of industry product lines that vary in quality and price. To narrow it down for customers, Rempher said they are asked some key specific questions. Such as, what is your family life like? Do you have pets? What kind of flooring surfaces do you have and how many steps? How often do you need to clean? Do you like an ultra-light or standard machine, upright or canister? Do you have allergies? “One family may have health issues, while the next one doesn’t have a care in the world,” notes Rempher. “The reason for the questions is we want to sell the best quality product for you, which is to our benefit and yours. Independent dealers like us depend on customer satisfaction, which makes this place rock and roll.” Knowing the product lines also helps sales staff find a good fit for customers. Al’s is unique in that it does warranty work for big box stores and manufacturers, even machines not bought at Al’s.
“We get to see what is working and not working,” adds Rempher. “We offer a free service plan for the machines we do recommend in order to improve daily efficiency and life expectancy. Most of our sales people have been repair people. They know how it was made and what may go wrong. In the long run, we are going to be there if you have problem.” The goal is to educate and teach good maintenance habits, helping machines run properly. “A vacuum is a working appliance,” said Rempher. “It picks up dirt, gets banged into things, gets plugged in and out a lot and the rubber belts get stretched. You need to be prepared, such as by having a filter on hand when needed.” Rempher said the comment he hears the most is people are tired of spending money on a new vacuum every few years and they want something that will last 10 to 15 years. Al’s can show customers the difference and potential of products in a showroom that is home to some 200 demonstrator models. They can compare exterior design and special functions that are optional. In addition to all styles of vacuums, Al’s stocks steam cleaners, scrub polishers, extractors, air purifiers, cleaning chemicals and professional window equipment. Al and Karen Allstadt started the business in the early 1970’s as a small vacuum repair shop. Since 1973, the store had grown to about 6,000 square feet, including a retail area and service supercenter. In June of this year, Al and Karen Allstadt honored Rempher with a one-week vacation to Alaska as a thank you for his 30 years of service, 20 years as manager. Information: 952-884-2691.

Identity theft too frightening to not take protective measures What can I say? I, like most people, love this time of the year. Generally speaking, people are friendlier, and the spirit of giving exists unlike no other time. Depending on your sources of news, you might occasionally hear of such pleasant incidents as an individual making an anonymous donation of $1,000 or even $5,000. And with certain radio stations, the sounds of legendary singers performing a wide array of traditional songs are enough to put you in a good mood. It’s also a time of the year when most take part in tradition, whatever that tradition may be. For me, every year I like to buy myself a gift, even going so far as to package it one year and address it to myself. It was an attempt at humor then as it is now. Unlike years past, however – when I was more focused on “toys” than practi-

cality – I finally decided to buy myself a gift that I feel is well worth the money. Many years ago, I was nearly a victim of identity theft. Luckily, the criminal was stupid, and his attempts were intercepted – not after I was put through the “test” to rule me out as a suspect, however. Even though the perpetrator was not completely successful, it was enough to disrupt my life and certainly give me cause for concern with regard to the future This incident occurred nearly 20 years ago, so imagine how much more sophisticated these criminals have become. Statistically speaking, the
numbers to me are staggering, but the problem with the figures is consistency. According to Mike Prusinski, LifeLock senior vice president of corporate communications and a certified identity theft risk management specialist, the mechanisms used to report such crimes are not reliable due to a great disparity from one to the next. Javelin Strategy & Research reported 9.1 million incidents last year, while the Federal Trade Comission said around 250,000. And the Department of Justice reported 8.6 million households, so Prusinski has a great point. In simpler terms, this means the law is far behind the sophisticated nature of how most of these crimes are committed. “We need a better reporting mechanism that is going to allow us to really look at this crime,” Prusinski said
I’m in total agreement, but reporting such crimes typically occurs after the fact. I would much prefer to avoid the hassle in the first place. That is what LifeLock and other similar agencies are designed to do. Until police, which Prusinski teaches on occasion, catch up and are better equipped to create a deterrent for the criminals, we all are vulnerable – some more than others depending on spending habits. With Christmas just around the corner, and of course the spending that comes with the time of year, it would be in everyone’s best interest to use cash. If this is too inconvenient, then all ought to use credit cards instead of debit cards, since debit cards provide direct access to your bank account. With credit cards, should any act of thievery occur, the bur-
‘Minnesota Nice’ amounts to a Minnesota fiction
After reading Daniel Callahan’s column on the differences of Minnesota and Arizona (“Ten months later, it’s time to reassess,” Dec. 15), it made me think how there is such a thing as “Minnesota Nice,” but it is definitely in a different category than genuinely kind people in other states. Though Minnesotans may not be the nice people they think they are, Minnesota is a safe and pretty place to grow up in. Melanie Palmer Lakeville

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Walter appreciates 8-year school board tenure To the editor: I wish to thank you for allowing me to serve as a member of the Bloomington School Board for the past eight years. I am as honored now as I was the first day I took the oath of office. Bloomington Public Schools remains one of the finest public school districts in the state. It continues to be nationally recognized for both its innovative and sustainable academic programs.
Even as a greater share of its enrollment is coming from some very challenging home environments, Bloomington schools continue to show significant progress in reducing the achievement gap. Financially, Bloomington schools remain one of the most stable in the state. The combination of stable administrative leadership, a school board that embraces governance over micro-management and a supportive community will assure that Bloomington schools remain on a path of excellence for years to come. Chuck Walter Bloomington
To the editor: Throughout my many years of living and going to school in Minnesota, I have learned one thing, and that’s Minnesotans are not nice. I have come to the realization that the only people who do think Minnesotans are nice are Minnesotans themselves. I have been to many different states and countries and in all honesty, I have never met people as rude as the people from Minnesota.

Ricci FROM PREVIOUS PAGE den is the credit card company’s, not yours. Better yet, should you know in advance one or more stores, and can’t think of an idea, buy gift cards. Again, no direct access to your bank account. From phishing schemes — online methods of luring unsuspecting victims to click on images or other links that allow criminals to view your entire keystroke record — to high-tech tools that allow thieves to retrieve your debit card data even after it has been used at an ATM or gas pump, the methods are very eye-opening. And of course, I can’t leave out at least a mention of how criminals obtain Social Security numbers. This is particularly invasive and more likely to greatly harm one’s financial standing as well as reputation. “Somebody could be using your SS and you don’t even know it,” Prusinski said. And he is exactly right. When this nearly happened to me, I had no clue. The next thing I knew, I was sitting at the Minneapolis Police Department watching a security tape of my perpetrator attempting to get a valid Minnesota identification card using my name and Social Security number, plus any other personal information he was able to acquire. According to Prusinski, people who use any public WiFi system are particularly susceptible
to their Social Security number being stolen out of thin air, literally, as these criminals nearly can cherry pick victims on an unencrypted WiFi network. But this is all child’s play when it comes to the lengths to which criminals will go in the age of social networking. “These criminals have gotten so good at social engineering, and that is them recreating your profile,” Prusinski said. Through a series of false emails, of course after hacking into your Facebook for example, these criminals have been successful in stealing one’s social networking identity and soon begin fleecing their friends and acquaintances, using the networking connection to their advantage. Right now, all of us in the United States are 10 times more likely to be victims of identity theft than having our cars stolen. According to the Secret Service, identity theft is the fastest growing crime in America. “We have seen parents take advantage of children and children taking advantage of elder parent,” Prusinski said. “There really is nothing that can stop all forms of identity theft. I could go on and on with more statistics of this ever-growing crime, but suffice it to say – it’s one that appears to be just in its infancy and the future appears bleak in terms of combating the problem, which is why this year I bought myself some peace of mind with LifeLock, as well as a box of fine cigars to enjoy while I sit next to the fire and watch “A Christmas Story” for well over the 100th time. Merry Christmas.

Goodwill store targeted by burglars
Platinum 7® Unparalleled quality, durability, style. And now lighter than ever.
BY MIKE HANKS – SUN NEWSPAPERS The goodwill of a Bloomington business wasn’t enough to deter would-be thieves. The Bloomington Goodwill store, 7845 Lyndale Ave. S., was burglarized shortly after midnight Dec. 13, according to Bloomington Police Commander Mark Stehlik. Three people entered the business by smashing its front door. Inside police found doors that had been pried open and an office that was ransacked, Stehlik said. There were pry marks on a wall near a safe, but the perpetrators were unable to remove it from the office. A cash register in the store had also been tampered with, Stehlik noted. Surveillance video showed three people wearing hooded jackets and dark gloves inside the store, he added.
The very best that Travelpro has to offer comes with a “Worry-Free” Warranty.

.14, requiring the vehicle to be impounded, Stehlik explained. A search of the vehicle turned up car stereos, stereo receivers, a GPS receiver and marijuana, Stehlik noted. Gloves, screwdrivers and other tools were also found in the vehicle, he added.
A separate arrest A 31-year-old Burnsville man was also arrested on suspicion of stealing from parked vehicles. The man was arrested after a report of suspicious activity on the 10400 block of Xylon Avenue. Police received four reports of vehicles that had been tampered with in the vicinity, but it was unclear on how the suspect, who was driving a tan vehicle through the neighborhood at the time of the initial report, was connected to the reported incidents, Stehlik said.
Vehicle burglaries
Financial fraud
A duo’s erratic driving may result in charges connected to vehicle burglaries. A 35-year-old Mendota Heights man and a 28-year-old Minneapolis woman were arrested Dec. 10 following a traffic stop for erratic driving, according to Stehlik. The black Chevrolet Blazer matched the description of a suspicious vehicle reported earlier involving a report of a man searching through vehicles at Cedar Pointe Apartments, 2130 E. Old Shakopee Road. The male driver appeared to be discombobulated and was driving down a deadend street when his vehicle was stopped. He had two outstanding warrants and was taken into custody. The woman offered to drive the vehicle upon the man’s arrest, but had a blood-alcohol concentration of
A 42-year-old Bloomington man was arrested on suspicion of defrauding an 88year-old Bloomington woman. The woman had been a customer at the Bloomington auto repair business where the suspect is employed. He contacted the woman by phone and asked if he could use her personal banking account to deposit money. The woman gave him a Visa debit card and the PIN number for it, Stehlik said. The woman’s son noticed discrepancies in her account when reviewing her bank statements. There were withdrawals from her account totaling $3,705 as well as a $2,000 transfer from her savings account, none of which were authorized by the cardholder, Stehlik explained. Charges have not been filed in the case.
FIRE REPORT Overnight house fire in Bloomington kills dog
Eden Prairie Center • Ste 2224 8251 Flying Cloud Dr. Eden Prairie MN 952-941-0150
A Bloomington family’s dog died following a late night house fire. The fire on the 4600 block of Nine Mile Creek Parkway was reported just after midnight Dec. 13. Firefighters spent about four hours containing the fire, which caused extensive damage to a portion of the house, according to Bloomington Fire Chief Ulie Seal. All four occupants of the house were able to
escape unharmed. “If they hadn’t had smoke detectors we probably would have had a fatal fire there,” Seal noted. The fire is not suspicious and appears to have been started by an appliance, he added. A minor electrical fire put the brakes on a small bus traveling along Normandale Boulevard Dec. 15, according to Seal. The fire was contained quickly and occupants of the bus were able to get off safely, despite the failure of a mechanical wheelchair ramp, Seal noted.

National coyote expert shares tips with local law enforcement City of Edina organized metro-wide workshop following coyote attacks on dogs BY KATIE MINTZ – SUN NEWSPAPERS Edina is not the only city dealing with a four-footed foe. Representatives from 28 metro cities, including Eden Prairie, Richfield and Bloomington, attended a workshop on coyote management Wednesday, Dec. 14, at the South Metro Public Safety Training Facility in Edina. After increasing coyote sightings, as well as a handful of attacks on small dogs in the city, Edina brought a wildlife expert from the Humane Society of the United States to help policy makers and animal control officers deal with the animals. “We’re trying to get everyone on the same page,” Edina Police Chief Jeff Long said. “We know that we have coyotes in Edina and we know that we have coyotes throughout the state. It can’t be up to one individual municipality to try to reign in the coyote population.” Last spring, there were three reports of coyote attacks on pets in Edina. In two of the incidents, dogs received puncture wounds or lacerations, Edina Animal Control Officer Tim Hunter said. Earlier this month, a fourth attack occurred leaving another dog bruised, Hunter said. Paul Smith said his small dog was attacked Saturday night, Dec. 3, in his backyard near Interlachen Country Club. He and his wife had just let the dog and their larger dog out when they heard a blood-curling scream. “My wife went running out. My little dog was in a coyotes mouth,” he said during public comment at the city council meeting Dec. 6. “Now we can’t let our dog out in the neighborhood and I don’t think young kids can go out in the neighborhood,” he said. Howard Goldman, Minnesota state director for the Humane Society of the United States, said he’s hearing similar
stories across the metro and beyond. Representatives at the event spanned from St. Cloud to Rosemount. Lynsey White Dasher, the Humane Society’s Washington, D.C.-based urban wildlife specialist who led the workshop, said fear is a common reaction when coyotes are spotted in urban areas, and especially when pets are attacked. Many believe the aggression will escalate to humans. Over the past three decades, however, there have been about 160 recorded attacks on humans, mostly in southwest states, she said. That’s far less than one a year. “You’re more likely to be killed by a champagne cork or a golf ball than you are to be bit by a coyote,” said Dasher, who participated in one of the longestrunning coyote studies in Cook County, Ill., and speaks to cities across the nation. Still, policy makers and animal control officers, under pressure from constituents, might decide to remove coyotes either through relocation or lethal measures, she said. Not only is the practice inhumane and expensive, it is also ineffective, she said. Dasher cited a seven-year study conducted in Colorado. Every year, between 60 percent and 75 percent of the coyote population in an area was killed. The coyotes were back to pre-study population within eight months after the study concluded, she said. She said the best approach to living with coyotes involves changing both coyote and human behavior. Dasher recommends a comprehensive management plan, like one developed by Denver, Colo., that focuses on monitoring and collecting data, education and outreach and coyote hazing. “Every time we see a coyote and don’t react we’re teaching coyotes that we’re nothing to be afraid of,” Dasher said. Hazing is meant to re-instill the natural fear of humans in coyotes that have grown comfortable with humans in urban settings. It includes yelling and waving arms, or using other noisemakers, to scare away the animal. Dasher said it’s important multiple people participate in hazing so coyotes COYOTES: TO PAGE 26

BY PAUL WAHL – SUN NEWSPAPERS Christmas is an exciting and busy time for pastors, but the 2011 version of the celebration of the birth of Christ will be poignant for The Rev. Leith Anderson. He will climb to the pulpit at Wooddale Church to give his final Christmas sermon as senior pastor. He will retire after 35 years of service Dec. 31. Anderson will continue to serve as president of the National Association of Evangelicals, a post he has held twice – most recently having taken the position after the resignation of former president Ted Haggard in 2006. Anderson will also have a continuing relationship with Wooddale, as pastor emeritus or a similar role. “It’s the right time,” Anderson said of his decision to step down. “The church is healthy, happy and strong … we’re in a good place. Building off strength is a good thing.” Anderson says he will miss the people who are part of the church, but will be happy to have a lighter schedule. He has seen many changes in the church, which began as The Wayside Chapel in 1943. Later in 1949, the congregation became Wooddale Baptist Church of Richfield. During Anderson’s tenure, the church moved into a 63,000-square-foot, 2,000-seat facility on Eden Prairie’s northern edge. A second campus was opened in 2008 in Edina, along with nine church plants across the Twin Cities.

Wooddale also took on mega-church status with attendance running into the thousands for five Sunday services in Eden Prairie and two in Edina. Anderson said it was never the congregation’s goal or his for the church to become one of the largest in the country. “Wooddale has always been about ministering to people in this region,” he said. Anderson has pastored through a number of changes in the local church, Christianity nationally and internationally. His first challenge at Wooddale was overcoming the congregation’s skepticism over hiring a Anderson pastor many thought was “too young.” Looking back he says he spent the first three years in his position more as an interim pastor. Anderson replaced Peter Unruh who had served for 19 years. The church dealt with changes in worship styles as younger members of the congregation shared their desire for music and ministry approaches that were less liturgical. Today Wooddale offers both traditional and contemporary worship services, along with a more edgy worship style during its Saturday night service. The growth in the scope and impact of Evangelicals has also helped shape Wooddale and other churches, Anderson said. “Faith is a part of our national conversation today whereas it wasn’t as much 35 years ago,” Anderson said. The church is also changing because of the shift in growth an influence of the church away from North America in

Anderson FROM PREVIOUS PAGE favor of South American, Africa and Asia. In the United States, church attendance and numerical growth of Christians is flat compared to those areas, Anderson said. Among the challenges for churches today is dealing with immigration issues and the rise in the number and power of the Muslim community. Anderson and the NAE have been at the forefront encouraging a more empathetic approach to immigration that says the current system is broken and emphasizes that an immigrant, just like any other person, is made in the image of God and thus deserves to be treated with respect. Anderson has also been lauded by many for his role as mentor, including to many of the Wooddale pastoral staff. Jill Fox, the church’s young adults pastor, said she came on staff at age 26 with a strong desire to be an effective leader. “I had no idea that the best education I would get would come from sitting under Leith’s leadership,” she said. “Leith has taught me more about church leadership than I could have possibly dreamed.”
She called Anderson a “strong leader” who believes in investing in young leaders. “Leith has opened doors for me to speak and lead that would not have otherwise been possible,” Fox said. “I will miss my mentor and friend, but I am grateful for all he has taught me.” Tom Bell, Wooddale’s pastoral care pastor, has been an associate of Anderson’s for 16 years. “Through his leadership, I’ve learned to look at ‘church’ through the eyes of someone not yet connected,” Bell said. “Leith has given vision and leadership in ways few pastors do.” The church will begin implementing its pastoral succession plan shortly, including a search process that could take up to two years. Grace Church, Eden Prairie’s other mega-church, spent two years searching for its most recent senior pastor. Church consultants say that is not an uncommon time frame. The church may appoint an interim pastor to serve during the search process, Anderson said, adding he is committed to the success of his successor. “I would hope for someone who is faithful in teaching the Bible and loving people, as well as respecting the history of Wooddale while carving a way into the future,” Anderson said.

Bloomington school board approves levy BY MIKE HANKS – SUN NEWSPAPERS A Bloomington School District tax levy increase of $1.09 million was approved as part of the Bloomington School Board’s yearend business. The 2.6 percent increase will raise the district’s levy to $43.4 million for the coming year. The levy increase is tied to the district’s plan to implement an alternative teacher compensation, evaluation and professional development system. The Q Comp system requires approval of the Minnesota Department of Education, the Bloomington Federation of Teachers as well as the school board. Q Comp provides performance-based pay, alternative teacher salary structures and teacher evaluations. Participating school districts may receive up to $260 per student in additional revenue from the state. Q Comp has been implemented by several neighboring districts, including Eden Prairie, Edina, Hopkins, St. Louis Park and Minnetonka. If the Q Comp plan is rejected by the department of education, the teachers or the board then the district will have over-levied for the 2012-2013 school year. If that occurs the department of education will adjust the 2013-2014 levy. Although the average value home in Bloomington decreased by about $5,000
in the past year, the school district’s share of the 2012 property tax levy for an average value home will increase approximately $18, according to Rod Zivkovich, the executive director of finance and support services.
Longer school day There will be a shift in school start times next fall in order to accommodate longer school days at the high schools. In order to comply with a new state law that requires schools to have a set number of instructional hours per year, school days for Bloomington high school students will last five minutes longer next year. The start time for the high school will remain 7:50 a.m., but dismissal will be either 2:02 or 2:25 p.m., depending upon the day of the week. The district’s elementary and middle schools already meet the state requirement. Although their class days will not be extended, their start times and dismissals will be five minutes later as a result of the change at the high school. Boardmember Mark Hibbs asked why the high schools were adding five minutes per day instead of an extra day of classes next year. Assistant Supt. Nancy Allen-Mastro said that by adding a day to the schedule the district would lose professional development time for its teachers, something the district needs more of, not less.

Sisters return father’s Richfield barbershop to its roots After decades on the move, Richfield barbershop moves back to original location BY ANDREW WIG – SUN NEWSPAPERS The hardware store is gone. So are the music store and the old bank. But one staple of Richfield’s unofficial downtown, Don Nelson’s Barber Shop, has endured, hanging on while picking up and moving — subject to the whims of commerce and a community remaking itself. Now, after four short moves, Don Nelson’s original barber pole is still intact, and the shop is back virtually where it started, having born witness to an evolving Richfield. “It’s all grown up,” Christy Nelson said of the city. She commutes from Shakopee and owns operates Salon St. George with her sister, Jody Nelson, an Eden Prairie resident. They remember the shop’s original neighbors. “You had Lyndale Hardware. You had the Richfield Bank, Trestman Music Center. We used to play at the music center and Garrison’s piano store.” It was 1959 when Don Nelson opened his shop, almost exactly where the Nelson sisters stand today, cutting the hair of clientele who have stayed with the shop throughout its nomadic life, and who remember the original.
Sisters Christy Nelson (left) and Jody Nelson have brought their barber shop and salon full circle, moving Salon St. George back to virtually the same spot — albeit in a different building — at the intersection of 66th Street and Lyndale Avenue, where their father first opened for business in 1959. (Photo by Andrew Wig – Sun Newspapers) They hung with the shop as it moved — across the street from its original location on the 6600 block of Lyndale Avenue in 1969, then to the end of the block when the neighboring hardware store expanded, then two blocks north on Lyndale Avenue in 2001. Now back to where it started, tucked away down a hallway inside the enclosed

commercial-and-office building that now occupies the land. There is no more Richfield Bank, but there is M&I Bank, and a Houlihan’s. Pictures of the old shop hang in the entryway to what the Nelson sisters now call Nelson’s Barber Shop at Salon St. George. Jody Nelson recalls sweeping the floor at the original place as a young

girl, pushing the hair clippings into a convenient hole in the floor. “Drinking Dad’s root beer and hanging out in the barber shop” is how she remembers it. And no one forgot the old red and white candy-striped barber pole. Still spinning and mounted in a corner of the waiting area, the pole arrived at its new home Oct. 12, about four months after the Nelson sisters moved into their new, original space, and exactly 30 years after their barber father died. As cancer claimed the patriarch, his wife, Jan, got involved in the business, selling hairpieces and catering to cancer patients, a niche in which the salon still operates today. Jody Nelson and her younger sister began cutting hair in 1983 and 1988, respectively. Both have earned the title, “master barber.” Five other contract stylists, along with a person who does nails, also ply their trade in the space that is the original home of Don Nelson’s Barber Shop, although nothing here is familiar. Instead of a street, the barber pole looks out to a hallway. “Now it’s like, when you look, all these little places are gone,” said Jody Nelson, who remembers playing at the neighboring cleaners and clothing store, too. “All the small businesses are kind of dwindling, and luckily we’re hanging on,” the younger sister said. “That’s what’s so funny, is this little barber shop managed to survive, and even the bank’s gone, the hardware’s

Barbershop FROM PREVIOUS PAGE gone,” Jody Nelson said. “What were the big businesses here, are all gone, and this little barber shop is still hanging on.” When the old shops still stood, coming to Richfield for the Nelson sisters was like coming to “town,” arriving from their home in the country, Eden Prairie. “Our parents would say, ‘We’re going into town,’” Jody Nelson said.
The transformation of both locales has been remarkable, but Nelson’s Barber Shop at Salon St. George, taking after the maiden name of the sisters’ mother, is still the kind of place where customers call back to ask where they got the candy that sits in the dish on the front counter. It was either Menards or Cub, Jody Nelson told the customer. “I’ll save you a piece.”
Shop moves, customers follow It was another salon, Kreative Hair
Company, that, since 1985, had occupied the Nelsons’ current space. Then, when that shop closed, the Nelsons had little doubt about their next move. Not only did the spot hold sentimental value, it was a better commercial location than the space two blocks north. “It was getting really ratty and deserted there,” said Jody Nelson, who noticed a downturn in the immediate vicinity when Lyndale Garden Center closed about 10 years ago. They did not feel safe, especially during the holidays and after an armed robbery. So when the new, old spot became available, “we were on it,” Jody Nelson
said. Customers have managed to hang with the shop throughout all the moving because it never ventured too far from home. Ruth Robinson is one of them, having Christy Nelson do her hair for the last 20 years. The moves Robinson can handle, but it is the trauma of switching stylists that she tries to avoid. “I just don’t want to go through it again with anybody else,” Robinson said, as Christy Nelson colored hair, adorning it with squares of tin foil. “She’s got my hair down.” BARBERSHOP: TO PAGE 26

Coyotes FROM PAGE 11 don’t learn only to stay away from policemen in navy blue shirts. After three hazing scares, coyotes usually keep out of human sight, she said. The fear is also passed to the coyote’s family and offspring. “The beauty of hazing is anybody can do it at any time. You don’t have to be an animal control officer,” she said. She said human behavior must also be changed. In addition to hazing, people should learn to protect their pets by not leaving them unattended outdoors and to eliminate food attractants that draw coyotes close to homes, including pet food, compost and trash. Children should also be taught to recognize coyotes and to never run from a coyote, as it might prompt a predatory response. Bloomington Police Sgt. Todd Lewis, who oversees the city’s animal control officers and attended the workshop, said there have been no reported attacks on pets in Bloomington. Coyote sightings are isolated. “We’re affected by coyotes and other critters. The main thing is keeping food away,” he said.

Bloomington revised its wildlife feeding ordinance in 2009 to limit food to containers 5 feet off the ground or higher, with the exception of birdseed mixtures, to primarily address deer and goose issues. It also impacts coyotes, Lewis said. He said he plans to put education materials from the workshop on the city’s website as well. In Edina, Hunter said the city would offer hazing training early next year in targeted neighborhoods where coyotes are prevalent. Last spring, the city discussed a proposed policy that would allow wildlife management professionals, at city discretion, to use traps or discharge firearms in city limits to remove problem coyotes. The policy never came back for council approval and the measures have not been used, Hunter said. He believes education and hazing are the best methods moving forward. In the most recent coyote attack on a dog, he said the resident had seen the coyote in his backyard 10 or more times before the incident. “It’s a perfect example where if he had known or understood some of the practices he could have hazed and harassed that coyote to the point where the coyote wouldn’t be coming back,” Hunter said.

Barbershop FROM PAGE 19 Some customers had to make the switch, however, when the original barber died. “One guy, the first day I did him, he goes, ‘Well, my barber died. No one can seem to cut my hair right.’ And I said ‘I’ll give it a shot,’” she remembers. “So I cut his hair, got all done. He goes, “That’s exactly how my barber cut my hair.’ And I said, ‘Really? Who was your barber?’”
“Don Nelson,” the man told her. It’s like the father passed down his snip-snipping muscle memory along with the spinning barber pole. Still, it is depressing, Jody Nelson said, to think about all that once surrounded her family’s shop, and how it is all gone and replaced. But at the same time, “it’s really special to be back here right now,” she said. Although the original brick and mortar has been demolished, “it’s like being home almost. Different building, but it’s like being back home, to be back on our corner.”

My other two sons run the painting end of the business and are also professionally trained Artists. Jeremiah attended the Minneapolis College of Art and Design and later studied under the mentorship of the nationally renowned portrait and fresco painter Mark Balma. David similarly was accepted into a full time master apprenticeship program at the young age of 16 at the highly respected Atelier Lack Studio. Death FROM PAGE 1 truck. Debris found at the scene suggested the vehicle was a Chevrolet Silverado.
As Bloomington police searched for the suspect vehicle, an attorney for Lindgren contacted police and made arrangements through a private investigator to turn over the truck, a 2000 Silverado with damage to the front driver’s side fender and a missing headlight, according to the complaint.
A stipulated facts trial may be requested by a defendant who does not want to plead guilty to a charge and is willing to waive the right to a jury trial, Freeman explained. In such a case, both sides agree that the statements of witnesses or the defendant, as well as evidence collected, is valid.
It is presented to a judge who then determines guilt or innocence. “The defendant is saying, ‘OK, I don’t have anything to challenge any of this evidence,’ Freeman said. Lindgren’s sentencing is Feb. 3. He remains free pending his sentencing, Freeman noted.

By: Ali Holman, co-owner of www.coreconditioningtraining.com I think we can all agree that eating is fun. Not only is it a way for us to socialize, reward ourselves and comfort ourselves, it also is the one area of fitness where people have the most trouble. Wouldn’t it be great to know that the choices you make are actually helping your fitness program? More importantly, wouldn’t it be even better to banish the word “diet” from your vocabulary? Chances are, if you are embarking on a “diet”, it will have a beginning and an end. The end is usually followed by slowly going back to old habits and ends you right back where you started. With our clients, we really encourage them to focus on a Lifestyle Change with room for “cheat meals” and realistic goals; which inevitably lead to lifelong results and without the emotional roller coaster of a diet.
Core/Conditioning Training’s List of “Fat Burning Foods”
eggs
low-fat dairy
Eggs are high in protein and low in calories. You may have heard all the warnings about eggs and your health: opt for eggwhites for the low-cholesterol, fatburning effect. Eggs also contain the vitamin B-12, a great supplement for breaking down fat cells.
Studies show that women who eat low-fat dairy products (such as non-fat yogurt and low-fat milk) three to four times a day lost 70 percent more fat than low-dairy dieters.
beans
oatmeal
Beans are one of the best sources of protein, fiber and iron. Some of the best beans to ear are: • Navy Beans • White Beans • Kidney Beans • Lima Beans
Oatmeal is loaded with soluble fiber, which helps reduce blood cholesterol by flushing those bad digestive acids out of your system. Skip the flavored oatmeals - you lose out on all the health benefits. If you must sweeten your oatmeal, do so by adding fruit.
olive oil
lean meats
Certain fats are good for you, and your body needs them. Olive oil is one of those “good fats.” It helps you burn fat and keeps your cholesterol down. One ounce of extra virgin olive oil contains about 85% of the daily value for monosaturated fat.
Search for lean meats - chicken (baked, broiled, grilled), fish and turkey - which are all high in protein. It is a good rule of thumb to consume at least one half-gram protein per pound of body weight each day. A chicken breast gets you well on your way, with about 22 grams of protein.
whole grains
interval training
Our body needs carbohydrates, despite what the fad diets tell you. Avoid processed carbohydrates such as white breads, bagles, pastas and white rice and look for whole grains that have not been processed and contain the fiber and minerals your body needs.
Interval training is defined as short, repeated bouts of intense exercise with minimal rest. You can burn major calories and get an all-over workout in less than 30 minutes. When you see people who are “cut,” chances ar they are partaking in interval training.
