State grant Park benches double as memorial will make Location at Bloomington Normandale Lake to stand in memory of homes Bob Kreuscher healthier BY MIKE HANKS SUN NEWSPAPERS

BY MIKE HANKS – SUN NEWSPAPERS A state grant will allow Bloomington officials to better address health hazards in the homes of 150 residents in the coming year. The city was awarded a $50,000 Minnesota Department of Health grant last month. The grant will be used to develop and implement programs that address health hazards frequently found in homes, as well as encourage prevention activities and provide guidance and support to individuals exposed to lead, asthma triggers and other unhealthy conditions within their homes. The grant will not create a new program within the city. It will instead be an extension of services already being provided through the Housing and Redevelopment Authority and Environmental Health divisions of the city, according to Lynn Moore, the city’s environmental health manager. The healthy homes program is “a good fit with a lot of things we already do,” she said. Bloomington will conduct 150 healthy homes assessments through the program. Those assessments will be conducted in

The new benches near the waterfall at Normandale Lake are both practical and a memorial to a longtime Bloomington businessman. Lorri Kreuscher wanted to remember her husband Bob with a memorial. The couple had lived a short walk from the city park for more than 35 years when Bob died of cancer last year. The park was a place where Bob had taken his grandchildren to fish over the years, but the area near the waterfall lacked a place to sit down, Kreuscher said. Kreuscher proposed donating the memorial benches, including landscaping, to the city. “It would be a nice place for other families to enjoy,” she said. With the project approved, the memorial was installed this fall. The landscaping features several decorative boulders,

der, as the dark stone provides a better image, Kreuscher explained. Kreuscher wanted some sort of photo included in the memorial rather than sim-

ply names and dates, and Dave Kopfmann knew exactly what she was looking for. Kopfmann, who runs a landMEMORIAL: TO PAGE 21

Miss Minnesota walks among us BY MIKE HANKS – SUN NEWSPAPERS Nitaya Panemalaythong spends much of her week in Bloomington, working by day at a reinsurance brokerage firm and attending classes two nights per week at Normandale Community College. And as of last week she has even less free time in her busy schedule. On Nov. 27 she was crowned Miss Minnesota USA 2012 in Burnsville. Being crowned Miss Minnesota wasn’t the culmination of a lifelong dream for Panemalaythong, 26, of Savage. “This was my first pageant, ever,” she noted. Her motivation was financial, and driven by education. Panemalaythong returned to college as a part-time student this fall. She didn’t have to win the crown to earn a scholarship, scholarships are awarded to the top 15 contestants, she said. “That’s what encouraged me, mostly.” But now Panemalaythong is coordinating appearances and speaking engagements into her schedule as Minnesota’s first Asian-American representative to the Miss USA pageant

All roads lead Bloomington’s Nik Lentz to the ‘Octagon’ Mixed martial arts fighter will make his eighth appearance in the UFC Dec. 10 BY JARED HUIZENGA – SUN NEWSPAPERS With one champion, four former champions and a combined 26 fight night bonus winners on the Dec. 10 Ultimate Fighting Championship card, diehard mixed martial arts fans have something to look forward to. The card will also include a fighter that should appeal to casual fans, the curious and those that take an interest in Minnesota sports and athletes. On that night, Nik Lentz, a Bloomington Jefferson graduate, Plymouth resident and former University of Minnesota wrestler will fight for the

eighth time in the UFC against veteran Mark Bocek at UFC 140. Lentz’s path to mixed martial arts and the UFC started while he was still wrestling at the U. “The coaches were good, but I didn’t like the way they were training me,” he said. “I thought about wrestling internationally and then I talked with my dad about it and we decided to give mixed martial arts a try.” After his first fight, he knew that he’d made the right decision. “All of my natural abilities translated better to mixed martial arts than they did to wrestling,” he said, adding that he’d always “messed around” with martial arts, including judo and Jiu-Jitsu to help him with his wrestling. Soon he gave up wrestling entirely and left college to start training and fighting full-time. Today he trains at The Academy

Mixed martial artist Nik Lentz works on honing his skills Saturday, Dec. 3, at The Academy in Brooklyn Center. Lentz is in the final days of training leading up to his fight with Mark Bocek Saturday, Dec. 10, at UFC 140. in Brooklyn Center, where the likes of Brock Lesnar, current Bellator heavyweight champion Cole Konrad and former UFC lightweight champion Sean Sherk also train. The decision was one that was supported by his close friends and family members, which, he said, is very important for a new fighter. “The support I got from my family and friends was huge,” he said. “There’s lots of money to be made in fighting, but it takes a long time to get there. “When you start out, you’re literally making nothing, so their support – both emotionally and financially – was huge.” Between 2005 and late 2009, Lentz trained and fought mostly in regional shows, compiling a win-loss-draw record of 16-3-1. But despite the impressive record, he was having trouble making the jump to UFC, which is the premier mixed martial arts organization in the world. “I was trying to get in for a long time, but I didn’t have enough big wins,” he said. “The problem was a lot of the guys that would have been big wins for me would take the fight and then cancel it at the last minute because their trainers viewed me

as too much of a challenge.” Then, two weeks before UFC 103, which was held Sept. 19, 2009, in Dallas, he got a call from the organization offering him a fight against Rafaello Oliveira. Lentz took the fight on short notice and walked away with a unanimous decision victory. Since that first fight, he has won four others and has mixed in a draw and a nocontest. In fact, you have to go all the way back to 2007 to find his most recent loss. Lentz comes into the Bocek fight with an overall professional record of 21-3-2 with 1 no-contest, which came in his last fight against Charles Oliveira in June. That fight, which earned Lentz and Oliveira each a $50,000 bonus for Fight of the Night, originally ended as a submission victory for Oliveira. However, the Pennsylvania State Athletic Commission later changed the decision to a no-contest after it ruled that Oliveira had hit Lentz with knee to head while he was on the ground – a move that is illegal under unified mixed martial arts rules. Bocek comes into the fight with a record of 9-4, including a UFC record of 54. He has also twice been awarded with Submission of the Night – at UFC 124 last December and at The Ultimate Fighter: Heavyweights Finale in December 2009. “Mark Bocek is a guy that’s been LENTZ: TO PAGE 23

To city and school elected officials: Thank you An elected official once apologized to me for not returning a phone call because she was visiting a family member who was battling cancer. The only appropriate response to that is, “What I called about doesn’t really matter. I wish you the best.” Did I say that? No, because I’m some jerk reporter who has to ask some question because I signed up to be on this end of the phone. She didn’t have to be on the other end. And she apologized. Local elected officials are not thanked enough. They spend a lot of time outside of their full-time jobs and away from families. They sort through issues that you don’t have to worry about. The majority of their time is spent doing thankless, unrecognized work. So, thank you. And thank you to your families. They’re paid, but it’s not much. Not in Eden Prairie, anyway. They have to communicate complicated processes without sounding like they’re being wishy-washy or hiding something.

PAUL GROESSEL Eden Prairie Community Editor

They know they might get quoted or misquoted in the newspaper at any time. They answer emails. They sit down for one-on-one conversations with people who want to talk about a concern. I don’t think they get many phone calls from people who want to have coffee just to say thanks or just to shoot the breeze. There’s usually a problem or topic that must be worked out. That goes for the press, especially. A lot of their elected duties are outside of the regular school board or city council meeting. They have subcommittee (or subcommittees) that come with the gig. They go to well-known, well-attended public events and not-so-wellknown events like a ribbon cutting or open house. When they make big decisions or a “what if ” happens, their schedule gets even more

hectic – the city needs to hire a new city manager; the school board needs to hire a new superintendent. Many people don’t even know who is in the respective seat and what the person in that chair is responsible for. That hiring process means finding a search firm, a selection process itself. Then, they have extra meetings with the search firm to set up more meetings to find out what the most important criteria in a candidate should be, and what are the most important functions and priorities of the city or schools before they can weed through all the applicants and choose who they’ll select for the first – first! – round of interviews ... See? You’re falling asleep already. You know what, though – we don’t care. We don’t think about that. We don’t think about what elected officials do on a daily or weekly basis. We don’t think about how much time it takes from their family. We just know where the city council will be when we want to complain about tax rates, our water bill or the city spending

more money than it needed on a lug nut that holds up a sign (which is probably too close to the road under the zoning code) at a public building. And you know what – they’ll let you come tell them about it. They invite it, the crazy people. We can do the same with the school board. In Eden Prairie, board members attend multiple events, are on a couple committees and often spend time looking up supplemental information on certain topics. They set aside times to have anyone come talk to the board about anything school related. No, we don’t have to agree with an elected official. Not every politician is the same; not everyone is as committed as another, and things aren’t always done with great intentions. Honest mistakes do happen. We should ask questions and make sure things are running as they should be. But, at the least, when we do question and pry it’s good to keep in mind how much time they put in and how little they’re recognized before firing off questions. Thanks for doing a thankless job.

Being in the right place at the right time wasn’t enough for a Bloomington police officer to catch a liquor thief in the act, but it was good enough for another officer to catch the suspect during his getaway. A 47-year-old Brooklyn Center man was arrested Nov. 26, accused of stealing two bottles of liquor from the Cub Foods liquor store at 10522 France Ave. S. It wasn’t completely by chance that an officer crossed paths with the suspect, according to Bloomington Police Commander Mark Stehlik. The liquor store had reported several recent thefts and the officer stopped to survey the area outside the liquor store while on patrol about 5 p.m. During his patrol of the parking lot the officer noticed a tan Chevrolet Impala parked near the liquor store entrance. The vehicle was backed into a parking stall and its engine was idling, Stehlik explained. The vehicle was similar in description to a suspect vehicle from a previous incident, so the officer stopped his car nearby and approached the vehicle on foot. As he did so, he noticed a

female passenger in the vehicle, who also noticed the officer, Stehlik said. The officer walked past the vehicle to the sidewalk behind it. Stepping several feet away from the vehicle and off to the side, the officer attempted to transmit the vehicle’s license plate information by radio. Before he was able to do so, however, a man ran up to the driver’s door of the vehicle. Upon noticing the man running to the door, the officer yelled at the man to stop and approached the vehicle, Stehlik explained. The man quickly closed the driver’s door and began to pull away before the officer could reach him. The officer then pulled out his baton and struck the passenger’s window on the driver’s side of the car as the vehicle pulled away, shattering the window, Stehlik noted. The officer attempted to pursue the vehicle from the parking lot, but was unable to provide a full license plate number for the vehicle or track it as it headed west on Old Shakopee Road, Stehlik said. Another officer responding to the report was southbound on Xerxes Avenue. He reached the intersection of 110th Street and turned west. As he was turning the suspect vehicle passed his squad car, traveling eastbound on 110th

The Cremation Society of Minnesota is Minnesota’s largest provider of cremation services. Society members come from all social, religious, and economic backgrounds, finding unity in their mutual attraction of the simplicity of the cremation rite. They choose to dispense with costly and unnecessary pomp associated with conventional funerals, and commit themselves and their families to this dignified disposition at the time of death.

Q. How does the Cremation Society of Minnesota Work? A. The Cremation Society is notified immediately at the time of death. Then the member’s body is transported to the Society’s crematory where it is held until proper medical authorization is secured. The cremation permit is then completed, and the body is cremated.

Q. What happens to the ashes after cremation? A. Your cremated remains (ashes) will be handled according to your written instructions. They may be picked up by your survivors, or will be delivered or mailed for a fee.

Q. At the time of death, what is the cost for the cremation service? A. The cost of the basic cremation service which includes removal of the body from the place of death, cremation, filing of the necessary papers and cardboard container suitable for burial is presently $1395.00 for members. This is payable at the time services are rendered. The charge to non-members, whom we also service, is more.

Robbery matches descriptions from Bloomington, Richfield incidents

FROM PAGE 7

The suspect in the armed robbery of a Minneapolis bank that occurred Wednesday has a description similar to that of a suspect in recent bank robberies in Richfield and Bloomington. In the most recent incident, an armed robber entered Central Bank at 2120 Hennepin Ave. S. at about 3:30 p.m., approached the teller counter, showed the teller a gun and demanded cash, according to an FBI news release. He fled after receiving an undis-

Street. The officer turned around and pursued the vehicle. After a short highspeed chase the vehicle pulled over on the 3000 block of Overlook Drive, where the man was arrested without incident, according to Stehlik. A woman and two children – the suspect’s eight-year-old son and two-yearold grandson – were also in the vehicle. The children were seated in the back seat of the vehicle and were not injured by the shattered window, Stehlik noted. A liquor store employee saw the suspect leave with two bottles of liquor, valued at more than $100, concealed in his pants, according to the complaint filed in Hennepin County District Court. Police recovered six bottles of liquor from the vehicle, Stehlik noted. The suspect was charged Nov. 29 with one felony count of fleeing a police officer in a motor vehicle. If convicted he faces up to three years in prison and a fine of up to $5,000, according to the complaint. He was also charged with two gross misdemeanor counts of endangerment of a child. Each charge carries a penalty of up to one year in prison and a $3,000 fine.

closed amount of cash, moving westward on foot. The suspect is described as a white male, between 5-foot-10 and 5-foot-11, with a thin to medium build. He was wearing a black hooded sweatshirt, blue jeans, black shoes and a black ski mask. He is suspected of several other robberies in the metro area, according to the FBI, but the agency has not officially connected Wednesday’s robbery with robberies that occurred at First

National Bank of the Lake in Richfield on Nov. 4, and the Richfield Bloomington Credit Union on Nov. 9. — robberies in which the suspect has a similar description to the suspect in Wednesday’s robbery. Anyone with information regarding the robberies is requested to call the FBI at 612-376-3200, Minneapolis Police at 612-692-TIPS(8477), Richfield Police at 612-861-9800, or Bloomington Police at 952-563-4900.

Kopfmann knew of the laser-engraved stones and connected Kreuscher with a business that provided the service, she explained. There are several boulders around the benches, but the memorial boulder is a darker red stone that came from a lot the Kreuschers own on Timberglade Road. As red was a favorite color of Bob, the stone was the perfect choice for the memorial, Kreuscher noted. The memorial benches are in the southeast corner of Normandale Lake Park, south of the intersection of Normandale Boulevard and 84th Street.

Lentz FROM PAGE 4 around for a long time, but he’s a bit under the radar,” he said. “But he’s a very dangerous opponent and he’s not to be taken lightly.” Lentz said his training camp has gone really well and he’s hoping that as he progresses as a fighter, fans will get to see “the real Nik Lentz.”

Lightweight division Lentz fights in what is arguably the UFC’s most competitive division: lightweight – 155 pounds. Champion Frankie Edgar, who recently defended the title twice against Grey Maynard, headlines the division, which also features No. 1 contender Ben Henderson, Clay Guida, Anthony Pettis, Donald Cerrone, Kenny Florian, Nate Diaz and Sherk. Last fall the UFC made the division even stronger by merging World Extreme Cagefighting, which was also owned by UFC’s parent company Zuffa, into the UFC – Henderson, Pettis and Cerrone were all a part of that merger. When Zuffa purchased WEC in 2006, it eliminated the heavyweight and super heavyweight divisions. Within three years, the WEC’s welterweight, middleweight and light heavyweight divisions were also folded, leaving the WEC with the lightweight division and other divisions for smaller fighters including bantamweight and featherweight. Not only did the merger provide the UFC with an influx of talent in its lightweight division, but it also provided options for lightweights that were fighting in an uncomfortable weight class or were looking for options. Those options included the addition of the bantamweight and featherweight divisions, which had never been a part of the UFC. Several fighters, including Florian and recent Lentz opponents Charles Oliveira and Tyson Griffin made the 10-pound drop to featherweight. When fighters get on a losing streak, Lentz said, things kind of snowballed and some viewed a change as a way to ignite or reignite their career. He, however, has no intention of following the others, and he believes in the long-run it can actually hurt a fighters chances. “There’s no reason for me to drop,” he said. “I’m winning and dropping a weight class isn’t an easy thing to do … it’s ignoring what the actual problem is.” Throughout his career, he has fought at light heavyweight, middleweight and welterweight. But it’s at lightweight, which is more than 20 pounds lighter than his normal “walking around” weight, where he

feels most comfortable and has the greatest chance of success. While others might negotiate about who, when or where they fight, Lentz said he doesn’t do that … when they call and offer him a fight he says “yes.” “I’ve always fought tough guys,” he said. “I just need to keep winning and get onto the pay-per-views. Once that happens you get more notoriety and that’s when the title shots come.” While he wants that, right now he’s in no hurry because once he gets to the top, he plans on staying there for a long time. “Once I get there, I’m not going to want to let it go.” Like many UFC fighters, Lentz is a frequent Twitter user. You can follow him at @NikLentz.

What is mixed martial arts? In simplest terms, mixed martial arts is a combat sport that combines elements of wrestling, boxing, kickboxing and different disciplines of martial arts, including Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, judo, karate and Thai kickboxing (Muay Thai). The UFC is the premier MMA organization in the world and is owned by Zuffa, which also owns and operates Strikeforce. There are other national organizations out there including Bellator Fighting Championship, Shark Fights and Titan Fighting Championships in the United States and Dream in Japan. Fighters are grouped into weight classes. Currently, the UFC has seven primary classes. Fights take place in a ring or a cage, which can vary in design between promotions. The UFC utilizes an eight-sided cage, dubbing it the “Octagon.” Time limits for the fights also vary slightly between organizations, but a typical fight will consist of three 3-minute rounds for nontitle and nonmain event fights. Title fights are five 5-minute rounds. Recently, the UFC changed time limits on nontitle main event fights to five 5-minute rounds as well. Like boxing, MMA fights are scored on a 10-point must system, with judges awarding 10 points to the fighter they feel won the round and 9 points or fewer to the other fighter. Fighters are judged on components including ring control, striking and aggressiveness. Fights can also end before they reach a decision via submission, knock out or technical knock out. Fighters can verbally submit to the referee or more often they “tap out,” which means that when they’re stuck in a submission hold they physically tap their opponent to let him know they are submitting. Knockouts occur when a fighter is knocked unconscious by an opponent. Technical knockouts occur LENTZ: TO NEXT PAGE

Grant FROM PAGE 1 conjunction with the city’s existing affordable housing and rental property inspection programs, according to Moore. Inspections of the city’s affordable housing offered by the HRA will reach many of the target populations of the program, including minorities, lowincome families and seniors. The assessments will also include 10 in-home day care providers. The program will provide benefits not otherwise provided through city inspections, such as providing educational materials to tenants on how they can make their homes safer. The grant also provides funding for safety equipment such as fire extinguishers, smoke and carbon monoxide detectors and batteries that can be given to residents who lack them. The grant will also pay for educational benefits, such as emergency preparedness training and drills for licensed day care providers, Moore explained. The assessments will be offered primarily to residents who are referred for the program by city employees, accord-

ing to Moore. Although there won’t be application process, there will be benefits provided to all city residents through educational outreach. That outreach will include a booth during the 2012 Bloomington Home Fair to promote the program, articles in the city’s newsletter and videos of healthy home assessments produced by the city’s communications division, for airing on the city’s cable television program, Moore noted. Bloomington was one of several governmental agencies to receive a grant from the state. Agencies are required to provide matching funds of at least 25 percent of their grant amount. Bloomington is able to meet that obligation through the staff time it dedicates to coordinating the program, Moore said. The Minnesota Department of Health’s funding for the grants comes through a federal Healthy Homes and Lead Poisoning Prevention Grant from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The local grants will help the department of health implement its statewide healthy homes initiative, with the goal of promoting healthy housing for all Minnesotans. A healthy home is considered to be one that is clean, safe, well maintained, dry, pest-free, ventilated and contaminant-free. Info: xr.com/minn.

Pageant FROM PAGE 2 “I didn’t think I was a pageant person,” she said. Her atypical path to the crown began in Thailand. She was born in a refugee camp and moved to Minnesota with her family when she was 1. She has lived in different parts of the state, primarily southern Minnesota, and has lived in the Twin Cities area for the past seven years. Much of her time in recent years has been dedicated to helping raise her eight siblings, creating both a time and financial commitment. With the ability to return to school this fall, she did so on a parttime basis, choosing Normandale for its location and connections to the University of Minnesota. For now Panemalaythong is taking a public speaking and general psychol-

ogy class. She is considering a career in corporate public speaking, she noted. Her new schedule of public appearances will include next summer’s Miss USA pageant, and preparations for it. Panemalaythong may have been a latecomer to the pageant circuit, but she prepared for her Miss Minnesota debut, which included judging in evening gown, swimwear and interview segments. Panemalaythong, who didn’t grown up with dreams of wearing a tiara and waving to a crowd, looks at her accomplishment as a testament to hard work, dedication and a willingness to dream. Although she lacked the pageant pedigree of many of her competitors, “You never know what the judges are looking for,” she noted. Panemalaythong said the pageant experience was rewarding, even had she not been crowned Miss Minnesota. “It’s a wonderful experience,” she said.

Right Way Painting Solutions Another summer has come and gone with winter here for the next several months. Many of us have been forced to put off inside projects for various reasons including economic hard times. Many of us have put off projects to save money in case things get worse. Based on the unemployment numbers, Minnesota’s unemployment is much lower than most states and has continued to improve over the last year. Many of us are in situations where our home value has decreased and it is hard to even think about selling our homes. Winter is a great time to do inside projects! Painting is one of the most cost effective ways to enhance the beauty of our homes. Painting the walls, ceilings and trim can dramatically change the appearance of our homes. Today’s paints do not leave odors that are unappealing. The best reason to paint in the winter is we are not as busy as we are spring, summer and fall. This gives you the opportunity to take advantage of our better pricing. I live in Richfield and many of the homes in the Richfield, Bloomington and Edina

areas are getting older and the wood work, windows and paneling are not in the best of shape. We can make these areas of your home look new with either painting or refinishing. Painting or refinishing these areas is much more cost effective than replacing windows or wood work. I’m Paul Moore, the owner of Right Way Painting Solutions. I’ve been painting homes for over 20 years. Being a former Shop Teacher, I have a great background in painting, finishing and wood replacement and repair. We do work for several townhome associations, Nursing Homes and residential properties in the Richfield, Bloomington and Edina areas. We remove wallpaper, replace trim, paint windows, woodwork, walls, ceilings, kitchen cabinets, paneling and cement floors. We give our customers great value with being able to do more than just painting. We offer a two year warrantee on our labor. We supply references and we would be happy to give you a free estimate. Please give us a call at 612-839-2239.

MARK YOUR CALENDAR The Bloomington Kennedy/Jefferson wrestling squad will travel to Lakeville South for a 7 p.m. South Suburban Conference match Thursday, Dec. 8. Bloomington will compete in the Northfield Invitational at 5 p.m. Friday, Dec. 9.

Jade Martin Kennedy’s junior basketball standout scored 18 points and surpassed 1,000 career points as the Eagles lost 75-67 in overtime to Wayzata Nov. 29 in the season opener. Martin has committed to attend Georgetown University after graduating from high school.

Bloomington swimmers are upbeat about season’s prospects Jefferson, Kennedy boys squads must fill personnel holes left by graduation losses BY GREG KLEVEN • SUN NEWSPAPERS Both Bloomington high school boys swimming and diving teams have personnel holes to fill after key graduation losses. Jefferson will try to replace those graduated seniors with large numbers. The Jaguars had 60 swimmers and divers in grades 7-12 come out for the team. Jefferson will rely heavily on four captains. Ben Lundeberg returns as a senior sprint freestyler. Another Jaguar captain is senior butterfly specialist Alex Mundahl. Jefferson’s other two captains are Pat Koob (junior sprint freestyler) and Roth Fricke (junior sprint freestyler/breaststroker). Sophomore Charlie Hynes also

returns as a distance freestyler. “We placed second in section True Team and Section 2AA competition last season,” said Jefferson coach Nate Linscheid. “We graduated a lot of seniors but are looking for help from a large turnout of swimmers and divers who came out for the team. “We looked good in pre-season workouts and hope to do well. Our Section 2AA will be competitive with CretinDerham Hall, Kennedy, Minneapolis South, St. Paul Central and St. Paul Highland Park.” Jefferson’s swimming and diving team travels to Apple Valley for a 6 p.m. meet Friday, Dec. 9.

Kennedy swim outlook Kennedy head boys swimming and diving coach Todd Walsh lost his top sprinter and distance freestylers through graduation. But the Eagle coach is excited about this year’s squad. “We are looking to fill a few holes, but I can’t wait for our season to begin,” said Walsh. “Our guys have been training hard.” Seniors Aaron Knigge and Drew

Schmitz will share the Eagle captaincy along with junior Grant Terrien. “Terrien is returning as our top guy in almost every event,” said Walsh. “He is a fantastic swimmer and has been since he joined our team. “Senior diver Andres Villas is also back and on a mission to dominate that event this year. He is fun to watch perform because he is so talented.” Kennedy is counting on varsity contributions from several other swimmers. Senior Stephen Kindem is returning to swim the sprints. Sophomore Simon Broccard is the team’s fastest swimmer in the 100-yard butterfly. Providing depth in the breaststroke are junior Dave Brazel, Schmitz and senior Andrew Ly. Sophomore Joe Kern, junior Aaron Paskiewicz and Knigge are key distance freestylers for the Eagles. “We have been waiting for this batch of seniors to get to their senior year and emerge,” said Walsh. “I am excited for this season.” Kennedy’s swimming and diving team hosts Eagan at 6 p.m. Friday, Dec. 9, at Oak Grove Middle School.

The Jefferson goalie made 37 saves during a 4-1 South Suburban Conference girls hockey loss to Eagan Nov. 29.

Kalli McCullen The Kennedy ninth-grade defender scored twice to spark the Eagles to a 32 non-conference girls hockey victory over St. Louis Park Nov. 29. The Eagles improved to 2-4-2.

Jon Lindquist The junior forward scored one goal and added one assist in Jefferson’s season-opening 7-5 boys hockey loss at Eden Prairie Nov. 29.

Kelsey Cline Cline scored one goal in the Jefferson girls hockey team’s 3-0 victory over North St. Paul Nov. 26. The forward added two goals during a 7-1 victory over New Prague Nov. 19. Cline scored a shorthanded goal during the Jaguars’ 2-1 win over Prior Lake Dec. 2.

Brad Hinrichs Hinrichs scored two goals in the Bloomington Kennedy boys hockey team’s 10-3 loss to Northfield Nov. 29 in non-conference action.

Kenisha Bell The Kennedy sophomore guard scored 14 points a 75-67 overtime loss to Wayzata in a non-conference girls basketball game Nov. 29. Bell has verbally committed to attend the University of Minnesota after she graduates from Kennedy.

Leverenz steps down as Jefferson football coach BY GREG KLEVEN – SUN NEWSPAPERS Bloomington Jefferson is searching for a new head football coach after Jon Leverenz stepped down from that position. Leverenz has been connected with the Jaguar football program for 19 seasons, 11 as head coach. “There is a certain standard we expect all of our student teams to achieve and maintain,” according to a statement issued by the high school. “After careful consideration, coach Jon Leverenz has agreed to step down as head coach of the Jefferson football program.” Leverenz will continue to teach biology at Jefferson High. He will also remain as head boys track coach. “We are grateful to coach Leverenz for his many years of dedicated service to the football program,” said Jefferson principal Steve Hill. “Mr. Leverenz will continue to teach at Jefferson.” Jefferson assistant coaches Steve Lang and Tim Carlson have agreed to lead the football program until a new head coach is selected, according to Jefferson activities director Brian Fell. Lang and Carlson will direct off-season conditioning and workouts. The JHS administration has developed a process to gather feedback from studentathletes, parents, coaches and others to identify the talents and skills that best suit the next JHS head football coach. The search is expected to take up to four months to complete. “We are committed to keeping students, parents, and the JHS community informed throughout the search and selection,” said Hill. Leverenz expressed mixed emotions regarding his departure as head football coach. “I wish our players well next season but feel bad for my assistant coaches if the new head coach brings in his own staff,” said Leverenz. “Next fall will be the first time since fourth grade that I will be out of football as a player or coach. “Not being head coach should allow me to spend more time with my family. I already feel some weight lifted off my shoulders. I will probably take a year off before deciding if I want to get back into football coaching.”

Vavrosky celebrates 300th career coaching win Bloomington defeats Burnsville in wrestling season opener BY GREG KLEVEN – SUN NEWSPAPERS The Bloomington Kennedy/Jefferson cooperative wrestling team opened its season with a memorable victory over Burnsville Dec. 2. Bloomington’s wrestlers defeated the Blaze 48-26 as Chuck Vavrosky recorded his 300th career coaching victory. Vavrosky has coached Bloomington wrestlers (mainly Kennedy teams) for 32 seasons. “I couldn’t have achieved 300 wins without the help of many talented Kennedy wrestlers as well as Bloomington Athletic Association, middle school and high school coaches,” said Vavrosky. “I didn’t know how long I would have to wait for my 300th win because we had so many wrestlers

sidelined for our first match against Burnsville.” Vavrosky may have to be at his coaching best this season working with an inexperienced lineup. “It will be quite a challenge for our team this season,” said the Bloomington coach. “But our kids are working hard and we will see what they can do. “We are hoping for breakout years for some of our younger wrestlers.” Last season, Bloomington finished with a .500 record and graduated several good wrestlers from that squad. However, senior Ben Cousins returns at 152 pounds and will serve as team captain. He placed third in the section tournament a year ago, narrowly missing a state qualifying berth. Senior Hugo Felix was a state qualifier last season but didn’t place. He will start the season at 138 pounds. Other returnees are sophomore Johnny Meiers (119), sophomore Zach Bakko (182), sophomore Orhan Azizi (132) and senior Jordan Dodd (195 or 215).

Bloomington had five Jefferson and 35 Kennedy wrestlers come out for the team. Bloomington will wrestle as a cooperative team throughout the regular season. Only Kennedy wrestlers will participate in section team competition. Wrestlers from both schools will compete in the section individual tournament. Bloomington achieved plenty of pins in the triumph over Burnsville. Getting pins were Meiers (119), junior Braedon Rumler (145), junior Cullen Brown (171), junior Charlie Keith (195), junior Kellan Ziebol (215) and sophomore Nick Juberian (heavyweight). Winning by decision were Azizi (132), Cousins (152) and Bakko (182). Bloomington will wrestle at Lakeville South at 7 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 8. Bloomington heads to Northfield for a 5 p.m. triangular meet against the host team and Eastview Friday, Dec. 9. The busy schedule continues at 10 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 10, as Bloomington competes in the Shakopee Invitational.
