The Girl Scouts have set up shop inside the Bloomington mall, offering a variety of merchandise in the month leading up to a celebration of the organization’s 100th anniversary. The River Valleys council of Girl Scouts, serving 49 counties in Minnesota and western Wisconsin, is operating the store. The store has something for both Girl Scouts and their alumni, from jackets and mugs with the River Valleys logo to necklaces and stuffed bears denoting the national organization’s centennial celebration. For everyone else, there will be cookies, beginning Feb. 20. The annual cookie sale kicked off last weekend, and local troops will sell cookies in the store beginning next week. “It’s a great billboard to have as we’re selling Girl Scout cookies,” said Linda Keene, CEO of the River Valleys council. Beyond selling cookies, clothing and collectibles, the store provides the River Valleys council an opportunity to “raise the visibility of Girl Scouts and what Girl Scouts is doing for girls today,” Keene explained. The man dubbed the “man in black” by the FBI has been indicted in federal court. Mark Edward Wetsch was charged with 13 counts of armed bank robbery. The indictment, filed Feb. 7, was unsealed following Wetsch’s initial appearance in federal court in St. Paul. Wetsch is accused of committing a string of bank robberies between March 9, 2011, and Jan. 3. His alleged string ended following a Jan. 3 robbery of Rolling Hills Bank of Brewster, Minn. Wetsch was arrested in St. Peter, Minn., that same day by a St. Peter Police Department detective who had been investigating a Dec. 22 St. Peter bank robbery attributed to the man in black. Using information about the getaway vehicle in Brewster, the detective anticipated the perpetrator would be passing through St. Peter en

Santorum favored in Bloomington straw polls Republicans garnered the significant attention during Minnesota’s political caucuses last week, but the state’s other parties found plenty of reason to gather, too. The Republican Party attention centered upon the straw poll taken during statewide caucuses Feb. 7. Rick Santorum came out ahead of his three challengers for the party’s presidential nomination. And he proved to be the candidate of choice for Republicans in each of the city’s three senate districts, besting Newt Gingrich, Ron Paul and Mitt Romney. Santorum’s support in Minnesota may be a reflection of his campaign style, which is in contrast with those of his challengers, according to Lew Coffey, cochair of the Senate District 41 Republicans, representing west Bloomington and Edina. “ By and large people do not like negative campaigns,” Coffey said. “It’s just not what people

want to be associated with.” The campaigns of Republican heavyweights Gingrich and Romney may have contributed to the overall attendance at Republican caucuses last week, Coffey said. Months ago party leaders were preparing for a healthy turnout given the enthusiasm of the party base, but as the campaigns rolled forward, “Our expectations were a little bit dampened,” he explained. Santorum’s predominantly positive campaign provides “a good bit of the explanation for his success,” Coffey surmised. In Coffey’s district, Santorum narrowly edged Romney, 406-389. Ron Paul garnered 256 votes while Gingrich, who had campaigned in Bloomington on Monday night, finished with 109 votes. In Senate District 40, covering part of Bloomington and Burnsville, Paul was the runner up to Santorum, 381-257. Romney finished with 165 votes, Gingrich

Minnesota’s upstart third major party, the Independence Party, had an intimate gathering last week, according to six-year member Jon Oleson of Bloomington, a former IP candidate for U.S. Congress. The eight adults and a seventh-grade student gathered in Bloomington. Other than him, all in attendance were new to the party, Oleson said. The party held a straw pole regarding the state’s proposed marriage amendment on this fall’s ballot and using taxpayer funds in the construction of a new Minnesota Vikings stadium. Of the six who voted, five were opposed to the marriage amendment, which would ban same-sex marriage. The voters were split on whether or not to use taxpayer funds for a new football stadium. Although the turnout was small in Bloomington, the party also held an online caucus last week as a way to encourage participation in the party, a party Oleson sees an important to the future of Minnesota. Oleson, 66, continues to champion the party as an alternative for those who are dissuaded by the polarization and rhetoric of the legacy parties. He sees a viable third-party option as a necessity in Minnesota. “It’s so critical to our future.”

Coyotes don’t like hazing, either Animal control officer advocates re-instilling fear of humans in suburban coyote population

BY MIKE HANKS – SUN NEWSPAPERS It’s called hazing, and Linda Davis of Edina is interested in learning how to do it, and do it well. Edina and many neighboring communities have seen an increase in coyote traffic in recent years. Edina leaders have been proactive in addressing the problem. Recently the city hosted a coyote management workshop. Now it’s taking the next step in management: education. The city is conducting a one-hour presentation on coyote hazing, and offering several opportunities for residents of Edina and neighboring communities to learn the technique and its benefits. The first presentation on Feb. 9 brought Davis to Edina City Hall because her dog “Ruby” was attacked by a coyote last March. Davis didn’t see her miniature dachshund being attacked by the coyote, but she heard Ruby yelping outside. Davis yelled as she saw the coyote from inside her house, enough to scare it away. Although Davis didn’t see the skirmish, Ruby’s injuries left no doubt the coyote had attacked her small dog. Ruby had “several bite marks on her rump” and

Ruby recovered from her injuries, and Davis is careful not to leave the dog unattended in her fenced-in yard, as she periodically sees a coyote outside her home near Edina’s Pamela Park, sometimes walking down the street or crossing nearby France Avenue in the afternoon. Coyotes are smart animals that will adapt to their urban environment, according to Edina Animal Control Officer Tim Hunter. Hazing is intended to re-instill the fear of humans. “This isn’t

going to make them go away,” he said. “It’s just going to make them change their clock.”

Hunter outlined several techniques and recommendations for hazing a coyote, and also discussed their seasonal behavior and how to identify them. Foxes are often mistaken for coyotes, Hunter noted. “A lot of people mistake coyotes for wolves, as well,” he said. Hunter’s presentation included pictures comparing foxes to coyotes, as well as information to help distinguish between the two. Coyotes are attracted to Edina for the plentiful food, water and shelter that is available throughout the city, Hunter said. “They enjoy an utter lack of competition for the resources,” he explained. In other parts of the country coyotes compete with wolves, cougars and bears for food, and survival. In Edina, “They don’t have to run away from anything,” he noted. Although coyotes are carnivores, they will eat vegetables, plants and bugs, Hunter said. A study of urban coyotes determined that 1 percent of their diet appears to be domestic animals, he added. Eden Prairie’s registry: A good example to follow Domestic Partner Registry affords some benefits to unmarried couples The Eden Prairie City Council is the latest to approve a Domestic Partner Registry that legally enables couples living together and not married to acquire certain benefits. Domestic partners can be any couple, including same-sex and heterosexual couples. After filling out a one-page form and in some cases paying a slight fee, these couples can be eligible for bereavement leave, family leave and insurance benefits at companies that recognize domestic partnerships. The couple must be unmarried and living together, live in the city and be committed to one another to the same extent as married persons are to each other, except for the traditional

marital status and solemnities. Back in 2008, former Gov. Tim Pawlenty vetoed legislation that would have allowed partners of state, federal and city employees to a have the same benefits reserved for married couples. His veto, however, didn’t prohibit individual cities from approving an ordinance for their own domestic partner registry. Minneapolis, St. Paul, Edina, Golden Valley, St. Louis Park, Eagan and Richfield have approved these registries. Rochester, Red Wing and Duluth also have them. The Eden Prairie City Council wrestled with the registry before approving it on second reading, 4-1. One council member, Brad

Aho, said it wasn’t needed, that only nine people in neighboring Edina registered for the benefits and only 2 percent of the cities in the state have adopted it. More to the point, he argued that the ordinance undermines marriage because it infers that any marriage is as equal as the partnership. Councilmember Kathy Nelson said the proposal has nothing to do with the proposed marriage amendment that will be on the ballot in November. “The ordinance,” she said, “does not make a statement in favor of or against any state law, and it is not political.” Another council member, Sherry Butcher Wickstrom, reminded that the city has a Manifesto which encourages diversity. It’s a way of acting and not just talking about diversity, she said. Mayor Nancy Tyra-Lukens was surprised more people didn’t object to the registry. The pattern in cities where it has been

passed is that most people find the registry reasonable. The mayor struck the right chord when she said: “The ordinance may not affect many people, but we deal with things that affect a small number of people all the time, as well as decisions that face all Eden Prairie residents.” That’s the genius of local government; it is local enough to be concerned about all of its neighbors. This action by the Eden Prairie City Council is to be commended, because it enables citizens to get benefits under the law regardless of their marital status as long as they live together in their community. Effective ways to close the achievement gap BY JOE NATHAN – GUEST COLUMNIST This was monumental,” according to Gary Cunningham, vice president at the Northwest Area Foundation in St. Paul. About 200 educators met last week to learn from some Minnesota’s public schools that have been most effective in closing the achievement gap. They were from district and charter public schools, and they focused on helping students. The African American Leadership Forum (AALF), General Mills Foundation and the University of Minnesota cosponsored the meeting. Cunningham believes “All children will benefit if this continues.” I agree.

Eric Mahmund, co-founder and executive Director of Harvest Prep in Minneapolis, was one of the keynote speakers. Harvest Prep frequently has appeared on lists of Minnesota’s “Beat the Odds” schools. That’s because despite the fact that more than 90% of its students are from lowincome families, and more than 95% are African American, 82% of the schools students tested “proficient” in math, and 76% tested proficient in reading. Both are above the state average. Mahmoud listed five key gaps in Minnesota. He’s found that “schools can overcome all of them.” • Preparation Gap (too many youngsters from low income

families come to kindergarten with low birth weight, not having heard enough words or encouragement. • Time Gap: Given the preparation gap, many youngsters from low-income families need a longer day and a longer year. • Belief gap. Mahmoud called this “the most important gap.” It’s the belief of some people that students from lowincome families cannot succeed in school. • Teaching Gap – failing to use research based approaches. • Leadership Gap – More leaders needed who know how to overcome other gaps. Mahmoud recalled the 1979 words of the late Harvard Professor, Ron Edmonds: “How many effective schools

would you have to see to be persuaded of the educability of poor children? If your answer is more than one, then I submit that you have reasons of your own for preferring to believe that pupil performance derives from family background instead of school response to family background. … We can, whenever and wherever we choose, successfully teach all children whose schooling is of interest to us. We already know more than we need to do that. explained that “this was a pilot. We wanted to see if people would come. Today was a trial. This was long overdue, and I hope it’s the start of something.” Jeffrey Hassan, an attorney and one of the AALF leaders, told me he “felt wonderful” about the fact that about 200 people decided to attend the Saturday sessions. He sees this as “a good start” of conversations in Minnesota, not about whether district or charters are better, but about what can be learned from the state’s most effective schools. That’s exactly what young people need – more pragmatism, less politics. Traffic stop results in identity theft investigation BY MIKE HANKS – SUN NEWSPAPERS A traffic stop by Bloomington police for an equipment violation resulted in the arrest of two people found to be in possession of what appeared to be stolen mail and check blanks, as well as narcotics. A 29-year-old Brooklyn Park man and a 31-year-old Brooklyn Center woman were arrested Feb. 4 after an officer noticed the brake light of their vehicle was out and the license of the vehicle was expired, according to Bloomington Deputy Chief Rick Hart. The woman, who had an outstanding Ramsey County felony warrant for a probation violation, initially gave a false name. The man driving the vehicle was driving without a license, Hart noted. The duo was found to be in possession of what appeared to be stolen mail from several cities, as well as blank checks with several different names on them and suspicious credit cards, according to Hart. The woman is also suspected of being in possession of a controlled substance, Hart said. Documents and checks recovered from the vehicle suggested that the duo was attempting to obtain unemployment

benefits in the name of one person and credit card accounts in the names of several victims. It is estimated there are 30 victims, Hart added.

Credit card fraud A 30-year-old White Bear Lake man was arrested in connection with attempted credit card fraud at a Mall of America department store. The suspect, arrested Feb. 6, is accused of using a stolen credit card to make purchases around the Twin Cities. An accomplice, a 30-year-old St. Louis Park woman, attempted to use a stolen credit card on Dec. 20 at the Nordstrom department store in Mall of America, according to Hart. The woman’s attempted Nordstrom purchase was denied, and when questioned about the transaction she gave her name, claiming to be the victim’s daughter, Hart explained. The card was used, however, to make purchases at the Bloomington Sam’s Club and Home Depot stores by a male, Hart noted. The woman was identified through her information, but has not been

No free ride Multiple counterfeit bills led to the arrest of a 31-year-old Chaska man at Mall of America. The suspect, arrested Feb. 3, was attempting to purchase ride passes at Nickelodeon Universe amusement part in the mall, according to Hart. Police were called after the bills were presented for payment, he said. The man was questioned by police and found to be in possession of several other bills identified as counterfeit, Hart added.

A second suspect has been arrested in connection with a Christmas Eve theft in Bloomington. Roseville police arrested a 20-year-old St. Paul man following a traffic stop. A 22-year-old St. Paul man had been arrested Feb. 1 following a report of a missing laptop computer from a residence on the 5200 block of West 98th Street. The laptop was reported missing hours after the victim’s daughter brought acquaintances from a nearby party to the residence she shared with her mother. A purse that initially went missing was found inside a vehicle belonging to one of the suspects, according to Hart. Police were called to the scene after the missing purse was recovered, but guests of the party left before police arrived, according to Hart.

Three females were arrested after attempting to smuggle more than $500 worth of clothing from the Kohl’s department store in Bloomington. The trio, a 19-year-old Bloomington woman and two 16-year-old Minneapolis girls, was arrested Feb. 7 after they tried to flee the area on foot, heading north on Penn Avenue, according to Hart. The trio had been observed by Kohl’s loss prevention officers collecting merchandise in a shopping cart. They took the items to a dressing room, where the sound of cutting and ripping could be heard, Hart explained. The trio left the store with the merchandise. As the trio navigated the parking lot, police arrived. The suspects dropped the items and attempted to avoid arrest by fleeing on foot before being arrested, Hart said.

County lakes close to vehicles; fish houses getting iffy BY BLAZE FUGINA – SUN NEWSPAPERS The first day of spring may not fall officially until March 20, but officials are warning Hennepin County lake users ice is already dangerously thin in many areas. Hennepin County Sheriff Major Darrell Huggett announced all lake access points were closed at a new conference Feb. 9. That means cars, trucks and SUVs are taboo. “It is unsafe for vehicles to drive on the ice, the lakes, rivers and ponds of Hennepin County,” said Huggett said. “Recreational vehicles such as snowmobiles and ATVs will be allowed on county lakes.” Huggett has been overseeing the department’s Enforcement Services Bureau since early January. It includes the patrol and communications division. Owners of vehicles caught on the ice are subject to a misdemeanor citation. Huggett said the early restrictions are due to the unseasonably warm temps this winter which have created inconsistent ice conditions. A sheriff ’s department spokesman said that at least five cars have fallen through lake ice in the past week. Besides Lake Minnetonka, vehicles have fallen into Medicine Lake in Plymouth, Bald Eagle Lake near White Bear Lake and Lake Riley in Eden Prairie, among others. “This is a very uncommon winter we are having,” said Huggett. “Talking with folks in the community, I want to reiterate that this is something that we haven’t

seen ever.” Hennepin County Sheriff Rich Stanek explained the need for barring vehicles this way. “We’ve had freezing and thawing on area ice and area lakes. ” he said. “It’s not worth the loss of life, or serious injury, just to drive on a frozen lake.” The sheriff ’s office had “beefed up” its patrols on the lakes prior to Feb. 9. A number of signboards were posted in the area to announce the unsafe ice conditions. “This is something we don’t want to take a chance on,” said Stanek. “We’ve spoken with the Department of Natural Recourses, and they concur with our decision, and that’s the way it will be.” Huggett also touched on removing fish houses from area lakes. “That’s part of the reason why, at this point, we are not restricting ATVs and snowmobiles,” he said. “I tell everyone that we are still very concerned, and that you have to use caution.” Huggett said the department recommends people begin removing shanties immediately. “The fact of the matter is that in several weeks the ice will start pulling away from the shoreline,” said Stanek. “It’s going to happen naturally in several weeks. We’re pushing it up a little bit because we don’t want to see those cars, those SUVs and those pickup trucks go through and risk people’s lives.” Huggett said that the ice restriction includes upcoming festivals that are taking place on county lakes.

Fiscal disparities on the menu at State Capitol BY T.W. BUDIG – ECM PUBLISHERS The release of a report on fiscal disparities has pushed the controversial 40-yearold tax base equalization program into the spotlight. Ushered into law by former Anoka County state Rep. Charles Weaver in 1972, the program attempts to equalize tax bases in the seven-county metro area by having the haves share their tax base wealth with the have-nots. “I don’t think you ever could do this again,” said Anoka County Commissioner Dan Erhart of passing such legislation. Under the program, 40 percent of the growth in the commercial/industrial tax base is siphoned off and placed into a regional pool. These dollars are then doled out to recipient localities, those areas with lower tax base growth. The idea behind the program is that it could promote orderly development, provide incentives to work for the betterment of the region as a whole, offer needed funding for communities at their early stages of development, according to the report. Arguably there are winners and losers. In terms of tax rates, the study estimates that the current law total tax rate without fiscal disparities in Anoka County, for instance, would increase from about 116 percent to about 132 percent — about 16 percent difference. For Washington County the current law total tax rate of about 90 percent would increase to about 101 percent without fiscal disparities — an 11 percent difference. Conversely, Hennepin County, without fiscal disparities, would see its current law total tax rate decrease by about 1.5 percent. Erhart, a staunch defender of fiscal disparities, argues it offers positive benefits. The program allows metro communities, for one thing, to vie for business development on a more level playing field, Erhart said.

Rep. Jim Abeler, R-Anoka, acknowledges the program has critics. “It’s an ongoing threat to Anoka County and our area,” he said of removing fiscal disparities. Both House and Senate tax committees will be taking up the fiscal disparity issue in upcoming days.

Whatever the merits of the program, the fiscal disparity debate is not a partisan one, explained House Tax Committee Chairman Greg Davids, R-Preston. “This is one where Republican and Democrat — you can toss that out of the window,” Davids said. The fiscal disparity debate is geographical, he said. right now,” said Dayton Revenue Commissioner Myron Frans. The fiscal disparity program needs to be examined in the broader light of overall tax reform, he explained. One Dayton Administration goal regarding property taxes is to make them more understandable to taxpayers, Frans explained. “I think it’s (property taxes) a mystery for a lot of people,” he said. Frans said he believed the fiscal disparity program has merit. “Well, I do,” he said. For one thing, Frans believes the program does serve to lessen potentially zerogain competition for business development. Senate Tax Committee Chairwoman Julianne Ortman, R-Chanhassen, said the fiscal disparity program will probably be more fully addressed next year. “I don’t know if we’re going to do anything this year,” she said. The House will have two hearings on Feb. 15 on fiscal disparities. The Property and Local Tax Division will meet at 8:15 a.m. with the Tax Committee meeting at 10:15 a.m. The Senate Tax Committee hearing is scheduled at 8:30 a.m. on Feb. 16. The report cites a number of fiscal disparities variables open for discussion. For example, it’s been argued the 40

Hunter said, explaining that they will eat animals that commonly feed on gardens and landscape plants. They will, however, take advantage of opportunities provided by homeowners. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Theyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re perfectly happy eating any pet food that we leave out,â&#x20AC;? he noted. Likewise, coyotes will take advantage of most water sources they find. â&#x20AC;&#x153;They donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t really care if they drink chlorinated water,â&#x20AC;? according to Hunter. Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s impractical to do away with backyard swimming pools, he noted, but their attraction to coyotes â&#x20AC;&#x153;is something we can be aware of,â&#x20AC;? he added. Coyotes will take refuge in culverts or underneath backyard decks, sheds and other out buildings, Hunter noted.

Before a coyote is spotted in a yard or neighborhood, several steps can be taken to minimize the attraction. Cleaning up fallen fruit from trees or bushes was one of several suggestions Hunter made. He also recommended cleaning up around bird feeders. Although a coyote may not be attracted to the seeds that fall to the ground around a bird feeder, it will be attracted to the animals that congregate at the base of the feeder, he explained. Since coyotes can climb and jump fences, Hunter recommends installing outward extensions or a product called a coyote roller that attaches to the top of the fence and prevents a coyote from maintaining its footing atop a fence. Minimizing hiding spots available in a yard will help dissuade coyotes from taking up residency in a yard, Hunter said. Several measures can be taken to scare a coyote upon an encounter, according to Hunter.

â&#x20AC;&#x153;Donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t run,â&#x20AC;? he said. Coyotes are fast, and they may follow somebody running away from them. They donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t view humans as prey, so it is best not to invoke a pursuit, he explained. Instead Hunter said it is best to give them a reason to be scared of humans. As long as a coyote isnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t cornered, noise and aggressive behavior toward it are recommended. Yelling and waving arms are a good first step. Throwing sticks and stones at them will also scare them, he noted. Coyotes that have not been hazed are â&#x20AC;&#x153;probably not going to run away immediately,â&#x20AC;? according to Hunter. They may retreat a short distance and stop to determine if the threat is real. As long as you can still see a coyote, the hazing should continue, he explained. â&#x20AC;&#x153;You want them to run out of the area.â&#x20AC;? Hunter suggested several other techniques for hazing coyotes, such as using air horns, cans with old batteries inside them and whistles to make loud noises that will startle them.

â&#x20AC;&#x153;Be aggressive, donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t be shy,â&#x20AC;? he said. There are few instances of coyotes biting humans, and no known instances of coyotes biting someone who is hazing them, he noted. Hazing is being recommended because there is â&#x20AC;&#x153;no other method weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve been able to research that has demonstrated the long-term results that hazing does,â&#x20AC;? according to Hunter. Trapping coyotes is expensive, and doesnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t provide a longterm benefit if the trapping is discontinued, he explained. Trapping also poses a danger to other animals, including pets, and children, he noted. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Hazing is free, and free is good.â&#x20AC;? Hazing isnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t intended to take police out of the equation, but the police canâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t provide an immediate response when a coyote is spotted, Hunter noted. Consistent hazing will force coyotes to change their patterns, he said. The church’s first service in the Taize tradition Sunday, Feb. 19 at 5 p.m. Taize began in France during World War II. It consists of prayer, singing, silence and reading of the scripture. State-Fish Art Contest Brooklyn Center-based nonprofit Wildlife Forever is requesting entries in the 14th-annual State-Fish Art Contest. Simple is the new rich Boomers should spend more time sitting on the porch BY EMILY HEDGES – CONTRIBUTING WRITER When Ron Timm of Minnetonka gives seminars on how to live simply, he frequently refers to the concept of “empty porches.” He challenges his students to drive down Summit Avenue in St. Paul, or around Lake Minnetonka when it’s beautiful outside and see if anyone is

using their porch. “They’re never sitting out there because they are always working,” he said. “Boomers, especially, are finding that they’re working during the years they expected to be sitting on the porch.” Twenty-two years ago, Timm was one of those executives working long hours with an expensive home on the lake that he never had time to enjoy. That is, until the day he thought he was having a heart attack. Come to find out, he was okay, but the experience left its mark. “When I thought I had a heart attack I started thinking about what is important,” he said.

When the 63-year-old Bloomington resident got her results back from the Kolbe Index full of verbs to finish that sentence, she realized that she would never relate to people around her quite the same way again. “I’m a lead, follow or get out of the way person,” said Stepney. “I’m a decision-maker who likes to put two and two together. I’m the one in the group who moves projects along, the one who knows how to get the deliverables done.” Helping clients like Stepney know themselves better is at the heart of why St. Louis Park-based Affiance Financial began offering the Kolbe Index last September. According to Financial Advisor Steve Lear, Kolbe isn’t about cognition, intelligence, personality, or values. “There are other types of tests for that. The Kolbe Index is about how people take action; if they were free to be themselves, how would they do something.” The 36-question assessment reveals the way people operate in four areas: Fact Finding (the way you gather information), Follow Thru (how you arrange and design your environment); Quick Start (the way you deal with risk); and Implementer (the way you handle space and tangibles). Unlike an IQ test, there are no wrong answers. This is a test to understand yourself better,” said Stepney. What she learned has helped Stepney in the way she relates to clients as a technologist in the computer industry. She now understands how individuals want her to communicate with them. “I can tell now who needs high facts, low facts, and it’s made me more successful,” she said. “When you can interpret through observation how to understand and communicate with clients better, they think you’re a genius.” As Stepney looks at her own future, she sees how the Kolbe Index is key for Boomers trying to decide how to spend the rest of their careers and beyond.

“Boomers want to keep working. Maybe you retire from a job you didn’t like. Now through Kolbe, you can go find a job that fulfills you in your later years,” said Stepney. “It helped me discover what I want to do. I’m realizing I want to set up some charitable activities that make me more well-rounded and happy.” Lear counsels Boomers daily who are contemplating a longer working life for all sorts of reasons. “For Boomers, we can help if they need to work, or want to work for their health and sense of purpose. The biggest gift Kolbe gives is to tell you where you fit in. It can also help a Boomer figure out ‘what’s your next career?’” While Stepney isn’t looking to retire anytime soon, and believes many Boomers feel the same way, she realizes that many don’t have the choice whether or not to look for another career. “For Boomers, whether they call it right-siz-

ing or downsizing, many are being squeezed out. Or companies are using various methods to move to a younger workforce. Some of us Baby Boomers have to face facts, there’s going to be changes,” said Stepney. “That’s the benefit of Kolbe. It tells you what makes you tick, what is your mojo. So if you do make a transition, what are the aspects that are going to make you the happiest.” Finding what makes his clients happy is the challenge for Lear, and achieving what he believes is true success. “We define it as “freedom to be yourself,” and that is the essence of Kolbe. We need to switch our societal definition here. It’s not how many cars you have, or how big your house is, or the clothes you wear. It’s this: do you have the freedom to be yourself ? “When you’re on your death bed, no one is going to say, ‘I wish I’d spent another four or five hours every week at the office.’” From that moment on, he wanted to do something different with his life. He started by going back to graduate school, and ended up writing his doctoral dissertation on Exit Strategies from Corporate America Using Voluntary Simplicity Principals. Timm not only read a couple hundred contemporary books on the subject, but also relied on the writing of philosophers hundreds of years old. “Philosophers call it voluntary simplicity,” he said. “It’s about living below your means. It gives you time to enjoy the things that are meaningful.” Timm left his job and opened his own graphic arts business. After 15 years, he decided to close the doors

Since then, he has helped support his family with his photographs, and teaching photography at the college, community education and through one-on-one instruction as a photo coach. His course, “Living Better on Less” is now offered in communities all over the metro area. “It’s inspirational to teach the course,” said Timm. “I hear lots of interesting stories from people who were about to retire and now can’t afford to, or who lost their jobs, or just decided they had to cut back.” Timm recalls a corporate attorney friend who decided to leave her job for greater peace of mind. “When she sold her house and bought a less

expensive one, the bank was suspicious because no one bought a less expensive house. But it permitted her to change her career and get into a different business that she was passionate about.” Another student, a 25year-old woman, already knew she didn’t want to be an undertaker for the rest of her life. She took Timm’s course to figure out how to transition into another line of work. Timm points out to his students all of the options that become possible in life if you reduce the amount you need to live on. “Maybe you work four days a week instead of five, change fields or it gives you more time to go back to school or maybe even retire.” While all ages regularly attend Timm’s seminars, it’s Boomers that come most often.

The fourth-seeded Jaguars (13-11-2) defeated fifth-seeded Shakopee 3-2 Feb. 10 at Bloomington Ice Garden. Jefferson was scheduled to face topseeded Edina in the semifinals Feb. 14. Winner of that game meets second-seeded Chaska/Chanhassen or third-seeded Eden Prairie in the Section 2AA title game at 7 p.m. Friday, Feb. 17, at BIG. “We wore Shakopee down with our three lines,” said Jefferson head coach Mark Stephan. “Shakopee’s goalie played well, but we kept executing.” Olivia Spellmire scored the winning goal at 14:54 of the third period with assists from Kelsey Cline and Kylie Earl. Sarah Freschi and Cline also scored for Jefferson. Karma Knutson was credited with an assist. Jaguar goalie Bailey Plaman preserved the win by making 23 saves. Jefferson concluded regular-season play with a 1-1 overtime tie with Rosemount Feb. 4. The Jaguars placed fourth in the South Suburban Conference with an 8-81 record. Lakeville North won the conference title with a 14-2-1 mark. “Our girls worked hard from the start of the season to the finish,” said Wineberg. “We had a better record this season playing a modified schedule. “With a break or two, we could have won about three or four more close games. But we just didn’t score a lot of goals. We have a good crop of forwards returning for next season but must rebuild at defense.” Kennedy will graduate five skaters and one goalie from this year’s team. Jaguar swimmers place third at Hibbing Invitational Hynes claims 500-yard freestyle title BY GREG KLEVEN – SUN NEWSPAPERS Bloomington Jefferson’s boys swimming team made a successful trek north to the Hibbing Invitational Feb. 4. The Jaguars placed third in the eightteam meet with 341 points. Grand Rapids finished first with 356 and Simley was second with 351. Jefferson’s Charlie Hynes put on an impressive individual performance. He won the 500 freestyle with a time of 5 minutes, 8.1 seconds. Hynes finished second in the 200-yard freestyle (1:52.51). Derek Burling was third in the 200 individual medley (2:14.91). Teammate Kieran Anthony finished fourth in that event (2:16.46). Jefferson’s Ben Lundeberg placed third in the 50 freestyle (23.13). He was fifth in the 100 freestyle (51.83). Anthony finished fourth in the 100 butterfly (59.15). Jefferson’s first-place 200 freestyle relay consisted of Lundeberg, Scott Bachmeyer, Calvin Skinner and Hynes. The Jaguars’ time was 1:34.99.

Scherber scoring spree Jefferson senior Britney Scherber continues to show why she is one of the top guards in South Suburban Conference girls basketball. Scherber scored 31 points during a 6348 Jaguar victory over Eagan Feb. 6. She had scoring support from teammates Allison Riermersa (eight points), Elizabeth Wittenborg (seven) and Anne Gathje (six). Scherber came through with another high-scoring effort during a 67-63 win over Prior Lake Feb. 10. She contributed 30 points. Nicci Roedel also scored in double figures with 16 points. Gathje added eight points. Jefferson improved its overall record to 9-13. The Jaguars are 7-7 in league play.

Boys lose twice It was a tough week for Jefferson’s boys basketball team. The Jaguars lost 61-29 to Eagan Feb. 6 as Ryan Gilmer scored 12 points. Prior Lake defeated Jefferson 52-39 Feb. 10. Matt Rosen led the Jaguar offense with 14 points. Jefferson is 5-14 overall and 2-10 in the conference.

Nordic ski honorees Bloomington Jefferson had several Nordic skiers receive All-South Suburban Conference recognition. Kennedy’s leading scorers against Lakeville North were Tonoia Wade (11 points), Kenisha Bell (nine) and Jasimine
